Both called for greater accountability among coaches and players, but Jackson\u2019s remarks describing the scene as \u201cghetto\u201d have drawn particular backlash within the HBCU community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-desean-jackson-it-looked-like-the-streets-it-shows-how-ghetto-sometimes-we-can-be\">DeSean Jackson: \u201cIt Looked Like the Streets\u2026 It Shows How Ghetto Sometimes We Can Be\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delaware State head coach <strong>DeSean Jackson<\/strong>, a 14-year NFL veteran and three-time Pro Bowler, didn\u2019t mince words when discussing the brawl that led to 27 suspensions and $65,000 in fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you seen that brawl going on, what was the first thing that you thought about? That\u2019s something I see in the streets, man,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cGrowing up, you got different gangs \u2014 that looked like a gang rivalry to me, bruh. They looked like they did not like anybody on that field like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jackson said the altercation undercut the progress HBCU programs have made in building credibility and visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe put too much work here, working hard day in and day out, man, and to just discredit and throw it all away for that,\u201d he said. \u201cThe head coaches, all the coaches that were involved \u2014 it just didn\u2019t look good, man. And it just shows, you know, it shows how ghetto sometimes we can be, man. And it don\u2019t look good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His \u201cghetto\u201d comment struck a nerve with many within the <strong>HBCU<\/strong> community, who felt it unfairly reinforced stereotypes about Black programs and players. Some alumni and supporters acknowledged Jackson\u2019s frustration but pushed back on the framing, arguing that fights happen across college football \u2014 from the SEC to the Big Ten \u2014 and are not unique to HBCUs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Jackson said the moment was damaging to the image of Black college athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe talk about Power Four \u2014 you know that hurts our opportunities, man,\u201d Jackson continued. \u201cWhen they look down at the HBCU level and some of the things that are going on, that hurts our progress. Hopefully everyone learns from that.\u201dDJaxOnGrambling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cam-newton-this-set-us-back\">Cam Newton: \u201cThis Set Us Back\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/4thand1show\/status\/1988654700833784030?s=20\">Former NFL MVP <strong>Cam Newton<\/strong> echoed those concerns on his <em>4th &amp; 1<\/em> podcast,<\/a> saying the fight \u201cset us back\u201d as a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe literally just had a civil war over a football game,\u201d Newton said. \u201cNo matter if you\u2019re in the SWAC, the SIAC, or the OVC \u2014 if you are a representation of Blackness and Black culture, you should look at this and say to yourself, this set us back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newton said the brawl hurt efforts to expand the visibility of <strong>HBCU<\/strong> football on national networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat if this was LSU and Alabama?\u201d the former NFL MVP asked. \u201cCertain things just won\u2019t happen there. We keep asking for equal opportunity and a piece of that media pie, but then we go do some silly stuff like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also placed responsibility squarely on coaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBehind every crazy player is a coach that allowed it,\u201d Newton said. \u201cYou think Nick Saban is allowing any foolery? You think Bill Belichick is allowing that toxicity? Absolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-divide-in-reactions\">The Divide in Reactions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While both DeSean Jackson and Cam Newton condemned the behavior, the tone of their critiques drew mixed reactions. Supporters agreed that accountability was needed after a fight that embarrassed two proud HBCU programs. But others said the commentary \u2014 particularly Jackson\u2019s \u201cghetto\u201d remark \u2014 lacked empathy and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many in the HBCU space, the issue isn\u2019t about defending the fight but about resisting narratives that paint an entire culture in a negative light.
