This is the CIAA women&#8217;s basketball preview.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s that time again. The nets are going up, and the sound of basketballs echoing through gyms signals basketball season is here. If there\u2019s one thing we know, women\u2019s basketball has been here, it\u2019s rising and it\u2019s surging. From packed college arenas to WNBA playoff viewership climbing every year, the women\u2019s game is commanding attention and respect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the CIAA, the momentum is no different.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s CIAA Women\u2019s Basketball Media Day gave us a front-row seat to what\u2019s shaping up to be an exciting 2025-26 season. With six new head coaches &#8211; some familiar names returning, others stepping into the CIAA for the first time &#8211; and a strong cast of returning talent, the competition is as deep as ever. But make no mistake: Fayetteville State still holds the crown.. And it&#8217;s hungry to keep it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-hbcu-d2-powerhouse-the-reign-of-fayetteville-state\">An HBCU\/D2 Powerhouse: <strong>The Reign of Fayetteville State<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fayetteville State has ruled the CIAA for two straight seasons, and now the question looms: can they pull off the three-peat?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI recruit those types of players that love that type of pressure,\u201d said FSU head coach Tyreece Brown. \u201cWe\u2019re the hunted, but we still have to hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coach Brown, who is 2-for-2 in CIAA titles since taking over, isn\u2019t satisfied with just winning, he is building a dynasty. Despite being the team everyone is chasing, FSU is focused on staying sharp.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are starting over fresh like we haven\u2019t won everything\u2026 every one is hungry.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With three players on the <em>All-CIAA Preseason team &#8211; <\/em><strong>Talia Trotter, KaNyah O\u2019Neal, <\/strong>and<strong> Nyah Wilkins<\/strong> &#8211; FSU has the firepower and the defensive DNA (top 2 defense in the league the past two seasons) to do it again. Pressure builds with success, and every team in the CIAA has them circled.\u00a0FSU is looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/theciaa.com\/sports\/2019\/5\/21\/WBB_0521193306.aspx\">become the first CIAA women&#8217;s basketball program to win three consecutive titles since Shaw did it from 2011-2014. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-six-new-coaches-endless-possibilities\"><strong>Six New Coaches, Endless Possibilities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This season brings a fresh wave of leadership across the league with six new head coaches at Winston-Salem State, Shaw, Johnson C. Gaither\/HBCU Gameday)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Winston-Salem State: Old Blood, New Tricks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WSSU turns to one of its own, Tierra Terry, a former player and assistant who\u2019s back to lead her alma mater.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t let anyone wear my jersey,\u201d she said. \u201cI have a very BIG passion for Winston-Salem State and what we are trying to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terry brings with her last season\u2019s CIAA Rookie of the Year, <strong>M<\/strong>aia Charles, and a fiery vision to climb up from a middle of the pack preseason ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe preseason rankings don\u2019t matter as much.. It matters how you finish.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Virginia State: Keep Competing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millette Green isn\u2019t interested in predictions. The new coach at VSU takes over a talented squad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI try to not talk about the past. I don\u2019t get caught in preseason rankings. We just want to be a better team each and every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While uncertainty surrounds how the new squad will gel, expect competitiveness from a program that\u2019s used to winning.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Virginia Union: Experience Returns<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alico Dunk is back coaching in the CIAA, this time leading VUU after a successful stint elsewhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBiggest key for us is to be consistent. We need to be consistent on both ends of the floor\u2026 I\u2019m leaning on returners to give us what we need.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Dunk\u2019s track record and championship experience, don\u2019t sleep on VUU making noise in a Northern Division full of new blood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shaw: Interim, But Intentional<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shaw\u2019s interim coach Lou Hamilton knows the system, he\u2019s been here as associate head coach, and he\u2019s focused on accountability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are preparing every day for the tournament\u2026 if we push each other, we can be great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning the nation&#8217;s top shot blocker certainly does not hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Johnson C. Smith: New Era, Steady Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanessa Taylor is already a legend in CIAA. Now JCSU\u2019s third head coach in two seasons, she is all about building something lasting.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have just been working every day. The proof will be in our work.. Win the day each day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may be picked near the bottom, but Taylor\u2019s message is clear: this team is buying in.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lincoln (PA): Identity Reset<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a new coach at the helm, Lincoln has the chance to reset its identity. It\u2019s a clean slate, a change to building something powerful from the ground up in a crowded Northern Division.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-rest-of-the-league\"><strong>The Rest of the League:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bowie State: Blueprint to Win<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a 19-10 season and returning 9 players, Shade Swan knows what it takes to stay apace in the league.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a core group returning\u2026 Everyone who returns knows the expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But losing a nearly 20 ppg scorer hurts. The question is: who steps up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Livingstone: Building Momentum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am liking my roster,\u201d said Queen Smith. \u201cWe have a great nucleus of 8 returners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They had the top offense last year in the conference and went 7-3 in the division. If their returners and newbies lock in defensively, this could be the Lady Blue Bear\u2019s season to make the jump to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Claflin: Steady Growth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jenkins has taken Claflin from sub .500 to back-to-back winning seasons. With seven returners and key portal pickups, they could challenge FSU for that top spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defense is their identity, not it\u2019s about multiple players scoring consistently for them: inside and out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elizabeth City State: Total Reset<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12 new players. Yes, twelve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t know my roster at all.. Meet us in Vaughan, how bout that?\u201d Ebony Tanner said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a full rebuild, but with many fresh faces, anything can happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bluefield State: Find Balance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Davis has a 3-heavy team that fired up 650+ threes last season, but defense let him down. \u201cThis isn\u2019t our first time being picked last\u2026 we\u2019re excited about the year.\u201d <br><br>With Jasmine Jenkins (All-CIAA preseason pick) returning, BSU is looking for momentum, and stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hbcu-basketball-s-toughest-conference\">HBCU basketball&#8217;s toughest conference? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CIAA has always been a competitive conference in Division II hoops. But this year? The stakes feel higher. With new coaches, experienced returners, and programs hungry for that top spot, the road to the championship will be anything but easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fayetteville State may have the target on its back, but this historic HBCU league is far from predictable. Will the Broncos complete the 3-peat?
