In a major move for diversity in golf, Florida Memorial University (FMU) is bringing HBCU pride to the fairway. Located in Miami Gardens, FMU\u2014South Florida\u2019s only Historically Black College or University\u2014 will launch its first-ever collegiate Golf Club<\/a>, thanks to an Equipment Grant from the PGA TOUR\u2019s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. The program is scheduled to officially tee off in Spring 2026, with plans to join intercollegiate competition by 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this isn\u2019t just about launching a golf team. It\u2019s about leveling the playing field, with some help from the PGA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis grant is more than just golf clubs and gear. It\u2019s a doorway to access, exposure, and equity,\u201d said FMU Interim President<\/a> William C. McCormick, Jr., an avid golfer and the first FMU alum to lead the university. \u201cGolf is a game of discipline, integrity, strategy, and connection. Our students deserve every opportunity to discover and benefit from that experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Grant with Game-Changing Impact<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The grant will provide student-athletes with everything they need to get started\u2014from clubs and training equipment to access to local courses and mentorship opportunities. FMU hopes to build not just a team, but a movement that introduces students of color to a sport often perceived as exclusive and inaccessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to support FMU and its mission to provide students exposure to the game,\u201d said Todd Fleming, Executive Director of the Cognizant Classic. \u201cThe opportunity to enrich the lives of young people through the game we love is a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The support from the Cognizant Classic\u2014South Florida\u2019s marquee PGA TOUR event\u2014marks a significant push toward expanding golf\u2019s reach in Black communities. It aligns with FMU\u2019s broader strategy of diversifying its athletic offerings and preparing students for success on and off the course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the Greens: Golf as a Gateway<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

For FMU, golf isn\u2019t just a sport\u2014it\u2019s a tool for professional development and personal growth. The university aims to use the program to promote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Networking and leadership skills<\/strong> are critical for post-graduate success<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Mental and physical wellness<\/strong> through focused, low-impact play<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Increased representation<\/strong> in golf, from players to industry leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cHistorically, golf has been out of reach for many in our community,\u201d McCormick said. \u201cThis changes that. It\u2019s about planting a seed that can grow into an opportunity for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eyes on the Sun Conference<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

    While the FMU Golf Club will start as a student organization in 2026, the long-term vision is competitive. By 2027, FMU intends to field a team in the Sun Conference, competing with other NAIA schools. It\u2019s part of a larger blueprint for elevating HBCU athletics strategically, inclusively, and boldly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cFlorida Memorial University continues to rise,\u201d said McCormick. \u201cThis new golf program is another example of how we\u2019re writing our future\u2014boldly, purposefully, and inclusively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
