WASHINGTON, D.C. — Whenever the SWAC and MEAC get together, there’s always a little extra spark in the room. Sunday in D.C. didn’t disappoint with the Grambling vs Howard basketball showdown living up to the hype. Grambling held off Howard 73-70 in a tight, back-and-forth battle at Burr Gymnasium.

Behind a huge night from Jamil Muttilib, the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bison dropped to 1-2 despite a do-it-all performance from Bryce Harris.

Jamil Muttilib leads the way off the Grambling bench

Muttilib was the difference-maker for Grambling. Coming off the bench, he poured in 21 points on an ultra-efficient 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range. Every time Grambling needed a bucket in a one-possession game, Muttilib was there to knock down another jumper.

He wasn’t alone.

  • Jimel Lane: 18 points, 7-of-14 FG, 2-of-4 from three
  • Derrius Ward: 12 points, 4-of-9 FG, 3-of-4 at the line
  • Antonio Munoz: 11 points, 4-of-8 FG

Grambling’s bench outscored Howard’s reserves 25-16, with Muttilib accounting for the bulk of that production.

Second-half surge powers Grambling past Howard

Howard took a 33-32 lead into halftime, but the Tigers flipped the script after the break with one of the most efficient halves you’ll see this early in the season.

Grambling by half:

  • First half: 10-of-30 FG (33.3%), 4-of-12 from three
  • Second half: 15-of-19 FG (78.9%), 6-of-8 from three

For the game, Grambling finished at 51.0% from the field and 50.0% from deep. That scorching second half helped the Tigers overcome the narrow deficit and survive a game that featured:

  • 12 ties
  • 7 lead changes

Every trip down the floor mattered, and Grambling’s shot-making down the stretch was just enough to close it out.

Howard’s Bryce Harris nearly fills up every column

Howard’s Bryce Harris did everything he could to keep the Bison in front of the home crowd. The versatile forward stuffed the stat sheet with:

  • 15 points
  • 6 rebounds
  • 5 assists
  • 5 steals

Harris got plenty of help, too:

  • Alex Cotton: 13 points, 3-of-5 from three, 2 steals
  • Cam Gillus: 12 points, 5 assists, 2 steals
  • Travelle Bryson: 10 points, 4-of-4 at the line

As a team, Howard actually shot it slightly better overall than Grambling, going 25-of-48 from the floor (52.1%), 7-of-15 from three (46.7%) and 13-of-16 at the line (81.3%).

The Bison also owned a 27-23 edge on the glass, including 10 offensive boards. But in a game decided by three points, the miscues added up. Howard committed 19 turnovers, which Grambling turned into timely offense.

Turnovers, pace and hustle stats tell the story

The box score shows just how thin the margin was between victory and defeat in this Grambling vs Howard basketball matchup.

Grambling key team stats:

  • Points in the paint: 30
  • Fast-break points: 20
  • Second-chance points: 14
  • Points off turnovers: 19
  • Bench points: 25

Howard key team stats:

  • Points in the paint: 30
  • Fast-break points: 6
  • Second-chance points: 12
  • Points off turnovers: 21
  • Bench points: 16

Both teams finished with 30 points in the paint, and both capitalized on turnovers, but Grambling’s ability to get out in transition — 20 fast-break points to Howard’s 6 — gave the Tigers a crucial edge.

Coffee sets the table as Grambling’s floor general

While the scoring popped off the page, Grambling also got a strong all-around effort from its point guard.

Roderick Coffee III played 39 minutes, running the show with:

  • 8 assists
  • 7 rebounds
  • 7 points on 2-of-5 shooting and 2-of-3 from three

His decision-making and poise helped Grambling stay organized in a hostile road environment and navigate all the late-game ties and lead changes.

Atmosphere at Burr Gymnasium

A crowd of 1,653 packed into Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C., to watch two proud HBCU programs in a nonconference early-season test. The energy matched the box score: physical, intense and tight from start to finish.

With no technical fouls and a combined 29 assists between the two teams, it was a well-played, high-level game that showcased what SWAC and MEAC basketball can offer even before conference play starts.

What was supposed to be a hard-fought SWAC showdown turned chaotic at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, as a brawl erupted during halftime of the HBCU contest between Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. The melee led to nine total ejections — five from Grambling State and four from Bethune-Cookman — after tempers flared when both teams came out of the locker room. GSU won the game 31-24.

Chaos at Halftime

The game was already physical before the incident, but the tension boiled over as players jawed near midfield heading into the third quarter. The confrontation quickly escalated into a full-on HBCU brawl, with players from both sidelines charging and several being thrown into team benches. Officials and coaches worked to restore order, but not before multiple ejections and a lengthy delay.

Conference and school officials are expected to review footage and impose further disciplinary actions. The brawl overshadowed what had been one of the more competitive HBCU matchups of the weekend.

Grambling State’s Big Plays Make the Difference

Despite the distractions, Grambling State quarterback Hayden Benoit delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-20 passing..His connection with wide receiver Nae’Saan Dickerson produced a 59-yard strike late in the second quarter that helped the Tigers take a 24-20 halftime lead.

Running back Andre Crews was the engine of Grambling’s offense, rushing for 130 yards on 14 carries, including multiple chunk plays that kept the Bethune-Cookman defense on its heels. Grambling’s balanced attack totaled nearly 200 rushing yards and controlled the ball for over 32 minutes.

Bethune-Cookman’s Passing Attack Shines

For Bethune-Cookman, quarterback Timmy McClain was nearly flawless through the air, completing 15 of 18 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. His top target, Maleek Huggins, torched Grambling’s secondary with six receptions for 122 yards and a 61-yard touchdown that tied the game 17-17 just before halftime.

Kicker Juan Dominguez also played a key role, hitting all three of his field goal attempts, including a 42-yarder late in the fourth quarter to cut Grambling’s lead to eight.

The latest HBCU brawl

While the on-field play was strong on both sides, the brawl will dominate headlines and social media discussions in the coming days. What began as a thrilling matchup between two programs fighting for position in the SWAC standings turned into a cautionary tale about composure and sportsmanship.

Grambling State improved to 6-3 on the season, while Bethune-Cookman fell to 5-4. Both teams are expected to face scrutiny — and possibly suspensions — heading into next week’s games.

For a program steeped in tradition like Grambling State, the victory will be tempered by the controversy, while Bethune-Cookman leaves Ruston wondering what might have been had the focus remained between the lines.

Saturday’s clash was more than just a football game — it was a reminder of how quickly emotions can spill over in rivalry atmospheres across HBCU football in particular and college football in general.

The SWAC West is back in flux, I mean it is November after all. Prairie View A&M entered the weekend unbeaten in conference play, but after falling to Alabama State, the division picture is serving up a little hope heading into the holiday season.

Now, with just three weeks left in the regular season, Prairie View, Texas Southern, and Grambling State are all in the mix — and the November schedule sets up a finish that could come down to the final weekend, as usual.

Alabama State spoils Prairie View’s momentum

Final: Alabama State 31, Prairie View A&M 28
Location: Panther Stadium — Prairie View, TX

It was a chance for a signature win for Prairie View A&M, but Alabama State, out of the East Division, had other plans.

The Hornets erased a 14-point deficit and leaned on quarterback Andrew Body and running back Marcus Harris II, who combined for four rushing touchdowns. Body scored twice before leaving the game for good with an injury just before halftime, but ASU’s defense handled the rest — intercepting Cameron Peters four times and sealing the win after a missed 53-yard field goal in the final seconds.

Prairie View fell to 6-3 overall, 4-1 SWAC, but still sits atop the West thanks to clean head-to-head wins over both Texas Southern (21-14) and Grambling State (28-13).

Alcorn State stings Texas Southern

Final: Alcorn State 33, Texas Southern 14
Location: Shell Energy Stadium — Houston, TX

Down in Houston, Alcorn State played spoiler. The Braves dominated on the ground, rushing for 224 yards, led by Reggie Davis’s 87 yards and three touchdowns. Texas Southern struggled to sustain drives and fell behind early, dropping to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the SWAC.

The loss dents TSU’s momentum, but they’re still in the thick of it, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Grambling after a 21–20 win earlier this year.

Grambling stays hot at home

Final: Grambling State 13, Alabama A&M 10
Location: Eddie G. Robinson Stadium — Grambling, LA

Grambling State is quietly becoming the biggest storyline in the West. The G-Men notched their third straight win, improving to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Behind a stingy defense and solid special teams, Grambling held off Alabama A&M and kept its postseason hopes alive. GSU didn’t score an offensive touchdown on Saturday but still managed to win. Grambling returned a punt 64 yards for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter and Grambling defeated Alabama A&M 13-10 on Saturday. They’ll need help to catch Prairie View — but if the Prairie View and Texas Southern slip again, the Tigers will be waiting.

What’s left: the road to SWAC Championship

Here’s what’s still on deck for the West contenders as the regular season winds down:

November 8 (Week 11)

  • Prairie View A&M at Alabama A&M (2 PM) — Prairie View can tighten its grip on the West with a bounce-back win. A loss opens the door for TSU or Grambling.
  • Texas Southern at Alabama State (2 PM) — Massive crossover game. TSU must win to stay alive; ASU is chasing the East crown.
  • Bethune-Cookman at Grambling State (2 PM) — Grambling goes for its fourth straight. A win keeps pressure on PVAMU, but Bethune-Cookman is a contender in the East.

November 15 (Week 12)

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Senior Day in Prairie View; a chance to clinch if the Panthers handle business.
  • Texas Southern at Southern (2 PM) — TSU can’t afford an upset loss here.
  • Grambling State at Alcorn State (2 PM) — Classic trap game — G-Men can’t slip if they want to keep hopes alive.

November 22 (Week 13)

  • Mississippi Valley State at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Potential clincher for Prairie View.
  • Alabama A&M at Texas Southern (2 PM) — TSU’s final push.
  • Grambling idle until Bayou Classic — The G-Men will be scoreboard watching.

November 29 — Bayou Classic (Grambling vs. Southern, 1 PM)

If Prairie View drops a game before this point, the Bayou Classic could carry major championship weight — the kind of scenario that makes SWAC football magic in late November.

Big picture: Prairie View still controls it all

  • Prairie View can clinch the West by winning out — any combination of three wins (vs Alabama A&M, UAPB, and MVSU) locks them into SWAC Championship.
  • Texas Southern must win out and hope Prairie View loses twice.
  • Grambling needs to win out and see Prairie View lose twice and Texas Southern once.

LAS VEGAS — In a wild finish fitting for the city that never sleeps, HBCU football fans were treated to a game that was made for Vegas as Grambling State stunned Jackson State 26–24 in the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic at Allegiant Stadium. For the second straight year, Grambling State pulled off an improbable victory against the reigning SWAC and Celebration Bowl champions — this time overcoming the loss of its starting quarterback in the final minutes.

Jackson State (5–2, 3–1 SWAC) looked poised to control the game early. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan engineered a crisp opening drive capped by his own 7-yard touchdown run, and kicker Donovan Warren added a field goal to push the Tigers ahead 10–0 by the end of the first quarter. Grambling State (5–3, 2–2 SWAC) struggled to move the ball early, punting on its first two drives and losing a fumble near midfield.

But as has often been the case in this renewed HBCU rivalry, momentum shifted fast. Quarterback C’Zavian Teasett — steady all night — ignited the Tigers with a 59-yard strike to Covadis Knighten just before halftime to cut the deficit to 10–6. A last-second field goal from Theodore Caballero made it 10–9 at the break.

Teasett played his best football after halftime, finding tight end Alex Frazier for a 26-yard touchdown that extended Grambling State’s lead to 23–10 early in the fourth quarter. The junior finished 16-of-26 passing for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions before disaster struck. While scrambling late in the fourth quarter, Teasett was hit hard and was carted off the field after being unable to move.

Backup A’Myne Darensbourg, a redshirt freshman, entered under immense pressure with the game on the line. Jackson State had stormed back behind quarterback Jared Lockhart, whose 62-yard bomb to Nate Rembert and a one-yard keeper put the reigning champions ahead 24–23 with just over two minutes to play.

The Vegas Miracle

From there, Grambling State delivered a drive worthy of the Las Vegas lights. Starting from its own 35, Darensbourg calmly completed a third-down pass to Barron Miles Jr. to move the chains. With time winding down, kicker Josh McCormick — who hadn’t attempted a field goal all night — nailed a 44-yard game-winner with 21 seconds left, sending the black-and-gold sideline into a frenzy.

Grambling finished with 365 total yards to Jackson State’s 448 but won the turnover battle and controlled critical moments. Tre Bradford led the ground game with 58 yards on 11 carries, while Knighten added 96 receiving yards and a touchdown.

HBCU football leaves its mark on Vegas

The inaugural Las Vegas Classic lived up to its billing as a showcase for HBCU excellence, pageantry, and pride. With over 29,000 fans in attendance and two iconic programs trading haymakers until the final seconds, it proved that Grambling State and Jackson State remain standard-bearers for the culture — and for thrilling football drama in any setting.

Las Vegas — When it comes to HBCU football, few matchups carry the weight and history of Jackson State and Grambling State. This weekend, that tradition takes a new stage — under the bright lights of Las Vegas, as the two storied programs meet in the Las Vegas Classic at Allegiant Stadium. Both head coaches, Jackson State’s T.C. Taylor and Grambling State’s Mickey Joseph, made it clear during this week’s SWAC coaches call that the biggest challenge might not be the opponent — it might be the distractions that come with Sin City.

For Taylor, whose Jackson State team enters the weekend 5-1 and ranked among the top HBCU and FCS programs in the country, the message has been consistent: treat the trip like business.

“Vegas is still going to be Vegas,” Taylor said. “It’s just my staff and myself — we’ve got to do a good job of keeping these guys locked in. They understand for us, it’s a big conference game. You know, a team that spanked us pretty good last year when we went down to Grambling, so we’re locked in.”

That sense of focus has defined Taylor’s approach since the Tigers’ bye week. He emphasized that his staff used the extra time to self-scout and tighten execution heading into the final stretch.

“We always talk about getting to this part of the season as our third or fourth quarter,” he said. “We’re right where we want to be — still in control of our own destiny.”

Grambling State up for the challenge

On the other sideline, Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph is also emphasizing focus, though for slightly different reasons. His team is coming off a 20-16 win over Arkansas–Pine Bluff — one that required resilience after a series of fumbles. Now, Joseph’s biggest concern is helping his players adjust to the travel and atmosphere of Las Vegas. “We’re skipping two time zones,” he explained. “We’ve got to make sure that they listen to what we’re telling them so their bodies will get back in sync come Saturday. It’s going to be more off-the-field things than on-the-field things.”

Joseph, who faced both Ohio State and Jackson State this season, views the matchup as a litmus test for his rebuilding program. “Any time you can play a team of this magnitude, a really good football team, you’ve got to be excited for that opportunity,” he said. “It’s a hill we must climb.”

Jackson State and Grambling State bring HBCU spotlight to Las Vegas

Both teams share a similar message — enjoy the moment, but stay disciplined. Taylor wants his Tigers to remember that every game has championship implications. Joseph wants his G-Men to embrace the challenge of playing an HBCU powerhouse on one of the nation’s grandest stages.

When the lights come on in Las Vegas, the glitz and glamour will fade the moment the whistle blows. Then it will be about what it always is in HBCU football — pride, tradition, and the pursuit of victory between two programs that helped shape the sport’s legacy.

The legendary group TLC will headline the State Fair Classic, Texas’ biggest HBCU football matchup. For anyone who grew up around HBCU culture, the Classic is more than a game — it’s a weekend-long gathering of alumni, students, and families. Adding TLC to the 2025 lineup connects generations, pairing one of the most iconic groups in music with one of the most iconic events in HBCU football.

TLC’s sound has always lived in HBCU spaces

TLC helped define the soundtrack for the 1990s with hits like Waterfalls, Creep, and No Scrubs. They sold more than 65 million records worldwide, and their music still gets heavy rotation at cookouts, tailgates, and homecomings across the HBCU community. Their presence at the State Fair Classic makes sense — they’re a group that resonates with parents, alumni, and current students alike.

State Fair Classic: Grambling vs. Prairie View is bigger than football

The State Fair Classic brings Grambling State and Prairie View A&M to Dallas each fall. If you’ve ever been, you know the matchup isn’t just about the teams on the field. The halftime battle of the bands, the tailgates outside the Cotton Bowl, and the sea of school colors are just as important as the scoreboard. For many alumni, it’s a homecoming away from home, and for students, it’s a chance to stand in the middle of tradition.

Why adding TLC raises the stakes for 2025

For the HBCU community, events like the State Fair Classic carry weight beyond the game itself. They’re about connection, culture, and visibility. By headlining, TLC gives the C;assic some added national attention while still fitting naturally into the traditions that make HBCU football special. This year’s Classic isn’t just another matchup — it’s a reminder of how music and HBCU culture move together and continue to define the experience.

GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling State needed every ounce of resilience — and one unforgettable defensive play — to survive a major upset scare. Defensive back Tyrell Raby returned a fumble 83 yards for a walk-off touchdown in overtime, giving the SWAC program a 37-31 win over Division II HBCU Kentucky State at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The Thorobreds nearly pulled off the shocker, outplaying stretches of the HBCU contest and forcing the SWAC blueblood into comeback mode before falling short in heartbreaking fashion.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Thorobreds Strike First

Kentucky State opened with a bang. Quarterback Denim Johnson engineered an 11-play, 69-yard drive capped by his three-yard rushing score. Running back Chad Elzy punched in another from six yards out, and suddenly the Thorobreds were up 14-0.

Even after Grambling responded with a field goal and a touchdown from C’zavian Teasett to Keith Jones Jr., Johnson answered again, hitting Jon McCall for an 11-yard score. KSU entered halftime with a 21-17 lead, powered by Elzy’s 58 rushing yards and McCall’s eight catches for 81 yards.

Teasett Puts Grambling on His Back

Grambling’s sophomore QB C’zavian Teasett was the difference-maker. He completed 13 of 27 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 99 yards and two scores on the ground. His third-quarter strike to Jones Jr. (96 yards, 2 TDs) gave the Tigers their first lead at 24-21.

But mistakes gave KSU life. A muffed punt set up a 33-yard touchdown from backup QB Torrence Bardell to Darius Cyprian, and after recovering an onside kick, Leland Gantz drilled a 43-yard field goal to put the Thorobreds ahead 31-24 with under two minutes left.

Late Heroics and Overtime Drama

With the season hanging in the balance, Teasett engineered an eight-play, 75-yard drive, finishing it himself with a 17-yard touchdown run with just 10 seconds on the clock. That tied the game at 31-31 and sent it to overtime.

Kentucky State advanced to the Grambling 17-yard line in the extra frame before disaster struck. Raby forced and recovered a fumble, then sprinted 83 yards for the decisive score, sealing a 37-31 win and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

By the Numbers
  • Total Offense: Grambling 458 yards, Kentucky State 356
  • Rushing Leaders: Teasett (9 carries, 99 yards, 2 TDs); KSU’s Jaylen Middleton (65 yards) and Elzy (58 yards, TD)
  • Passing Leaders: Teasett (228 yards, 2 TDs); Johnson (146 yards, 1 TD) and Bardell (75 yards, 1 TD)
  • Receiving Leaders: Jones Jr. (96 yards, 2 TDs); McCall (81 yards, TD)
  • Defense: Raby (6 tackles, forced fumble, 83-yard game-winner); KSU’s Mataye Youman led all tacklers with nine
  • Third Downs: Both teams were 7-of-15
  • Time of Possession: KSU 32:54, GSU 27:05
What’s Next

Grambling State (2-1) escapes with a win but faces questions after nearly dropping one to a DII HBCU foe. The Tigers will host East Texas A&M next Saturday at 6 p.m. on SWAC TV.

The Thorobreds (1-2) will continue road play against conference opponent Morehouse on Sept. 20. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Atlanta.

The Grambling State Tigers stepped onto one of college football’s biggest stages Saturday, taking on the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium. The final score, 70–0 in favor of Ohio State, told the story of a powerhouse program overwhelming an underdog. Yet, for Grambling, this game meant much more than numbers on a scoreboard.

Ohio State Dominates Early and Often

The Buckeyes controlled the game from the opening kickoff. Quarterback Julian Sayin delivered a flawless performance, completing 18 of 19 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns in just one half of play. His accuracy and poise set the tone for an offense that spread the ball to multiple playmakers.

Ohio State’s depth was on full display. Nine different Buckeyes scored touchdowns, including several true freshmen. Riley Pettijohn returned a fumble 23 yards for a score, while running backs Bo Jackson and Isaiah West each notched their first career touchdowns.

By halftime, Ohio State led 35–0, leaving little doubt about the outcome.

Grambling State’s Perspective

For Grambling football, this trip to Columbus carried historic weight:

  • First-Ever Meeting: This was the Tigers’ first game against Ohio State, a milestone for the program.
  • Legendary Legacy: Grambling State’s football history remains unmatched among HBCUs, with 15 Black college football national championships and 27 conference titles under its belt.
  • Coach’s View: Head coach Mickey Joseph acknowledged the uphill battle but embraced the opportunity: “We understand what’s going to happen… it’s a great opportunity.”
  • Band Pride: The World Famed Tiger Marching Band drew praise for delivering an electric halftime performance that represented HBCU culture on one of the sport’s grandest stages.

Despite the loss, Grambling represented its tradition with pride and purpose.

Why This Game Matters for HBCU Football

While Grambling State faced long odds against Ohio State, the significance goes beyond the scoreboard. Playing a national powerhouse brings exposure, financial resources, and an opportunity to showcase HBCU excellence.

For the players, competing in front of more than 100,000 fans in “The Horseshoe” created memories and experience that will carry into conference play. For the fans, it was another chance to see an HBCU program step into the national spotlight.

Looking Ahead for Grambling State

Grambling entered the matchup coming off a 55–7 win over Langston in its opener. Despite the setback in Columbus, the Tigers remain focused on SWAC play, where the battles are more balanced and the stakes carry championship weight.

As the season continues, the Tigers will lean on their tradition, their loyal fan base, and their ability to rise above challenges. The Ohio State game will be remembered not for the final score, but for the stage it provided and the pride with which Grambling represented HBCUs.

Final Thoughts

The Grambling vs. Ohio State game was never about the expectation of victory. It was about recognition, visibility, and the chance to showcase HBCU culture on a national platform. The Tigers may not have scored on the field, but they scored in presence, history, and pride.

When Ohio State and Grambling State meet on September 6, much of the talk will center on an FBS power facing an HBCU legend. But the conversation also invites a historical thought experiment: what if Woody Hayes’ Buckeyes and Eddie Robinson’s Tigers had squared off in 1967?

Mickey Joseph’s Reflection

Current Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph has thought about that very scenario. On this week’s SWAC coaches call, he emphasized how formidable Robinson’s teams were:

“I don’t know if Ohio State would have called Coach Rob back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s and said, ‘Let’s play.’ He had a loaded locker room,” Joseph said.

It’s a statement that underscores both Robinson’s legacy and the magnitude of what such a matchup could have meant for college football history.

The 1967 Teams

In 1967, Hayes’ Buckeyes were solid but unspectacular, finishing 6–3 in what was essentially a transition year. Ohio State’s offense lacked spark, and its defense could be exploited. The Buckeyes were a year away from the dominance that would carry them to a national championship in 1968.

Grambling State, meanwhile, was near its peak. Robinson’s Tigers went 9–1, led by quarterback James Harris, who would later become the first Black quarterback to open an NFL season as a starter. Their defense featured Willie Brown, who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Oakland Raiders. Robinson’s 1967 roster was loaded with NFL talent, and his coaching acumen maximized both discipline and creativity.

A head-to-head contest between these two squads would have been a contrast in philosophies: Hayes’ run-heavy “three yards and a cloud of dust” versus Robinson’s balanced attack and opportunistic defense.

Grambling State
James Harris was Grambling State’s quarterback in 1967.

Coaching Legacies

Woody Hayes and Eddie Robinson are both remembered as giants in the sport. Hayes shaped the Big Ten’s bruising identity, while Robinson elevated HBCU football into the national spotlight, producing more than 200 future NFL players and four Hall of Famers. A 1967 clash between them would have been more than a game—it would have been a showcase of how different roads led to greatness.

Bringing It Back to 2025

For Joseph and his Tigers today, the contrast between then and now is impossible to ignore. He reminded reporters that the game against Ohio State this season highlights not just history, but the current realities of college football:

“I know on paper they’re probably not at 105 [scholarships]. But I know they got enough money to support 105 scholarships. And we’re at 63. It’s a huge task. But it’s a great opportunity and a great memory for our kids. So we’re just going to swing”.

What Might Have Happened

If Robinson’s 1967 Grambling State team had faced Hayes’ 1967 Buckeyes, the Tigers may have had the upper hand. With Harris leading the offense and Brown patrolling the secondary, Robinson’s disciplined, talented squad could have exploited Ohio State’s inconsistencies.

Today, the matchup is a money game, but the legacy it represents is real: Eddie Robinson built an HBCU program that could compete with anyone for a while — even Ohio State.

Grambling State University is taking a bold step forward in college athletics. On Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, the school will officially break ground on a state-of-the-art Indoor Athletic Training and Performance Facility — a project that ranks among the most ambitious athletic investments at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

The indoor athletic training and performance facility, funded with state support, will give Grambling athletes the resources they need to compete at the highest level. It features a 70-yard turf field, climate-controlled practice space, advanced video systems, and specialized areas for strength training and sports medicine. As a result, student-athletes will prepare, perform, and recover in a setting that rivals many of the nation’s top programs.

A Game-Changer for Grambling State

Grambling has stood as a symbol of athletic excellence for decades — from Eddie G. Robinson’s legendary football dynasty to countless professional standouts. Now, the new facility signals that the HBCU intends to match that tradition with modern innovation.

“This design concept is more than an idea — it’s a promise,” said Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “We are preparing champions who will carry forward the legacy of Grambling State. This facility is designed with them in mind, ensuring our student-athletes have the tools to compete and excel in every season.”

The indoor complex will rise adjacent to Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, linking Grambling’s iconic football history with its next era of athletic growth.

HBCU Grambling Athletic Training Facility
Features Designed for Every Athlete

The planned facility includes:

  • 70-yard turf field for football, track, and multipurpose training
  • Climate-controlled space for year-round use
  • Sports medicine and strength training areas to support recovery and development
  • Advanced lighting and video systems for performance analysis
  • Dedicated meeting spaces to improve team preparation

In addition, the facility will serve as a central hub for athlete development, creating consistency across all programs. Therefore, coaches and players alike will benefit from the efficiency of having everything under one roof.

A Vision Beyond Sports

University President Martin Lemelle, Jr., stressed that the project is about holistic development as well as athletics.

“Supporting our student-athletes means investing in every dimension of their journey — athletic, academic, and personal,” Lemelle said. “This facility embodies that vision. It is more than a space to train; it is a commitment to their well-being, their preparation, and their legacy.”

By adding this complex, Grambling signals its determination to compete nationally while also reinforcing the role of HBCUs as leaders in athlete support and innovation.

Looking Ahead

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Oct. 10 and is open to alumni, fans, and media. Conceptual renderings reveal a sleek, modern design that reflects both function and inspiration. Consequently, the project highlights Grambling’s mission to honor tradition while embracing progress.

For an HBCU with one of the richest athletic legacies in the nation, this facility represents more than bricks and steel. Instead, it stands as a foundation for future generations of champions — ensuring that Grambling remains a standard-bearer in HBCU athletics for decades to come.

When Grambling State takes the field against Southern in the Bayou Classic on November 29, the Tigers won’t just be chasing a win—they’ll be doing so in style. Adidas has unveiled a brand-new alternate jersey designed exclusively for one of the most iconic rivalries in HBCU football.

A Bold New Look

The uniform is all black, a sleek departure that screams intimidation. Inside the collar, the phrase “KINGS OF THE BAYOU” is stitched in bold letters, reminding every player of the legacy they’re defending. Red tiger stripes slash across the shoulders, a nod to Grambling’s fearless “tiger mentality.”

Front and center, just below the neckline, sits the program’s most recognizable emblem: the gold-and-black “G” logo. The combination of modern edge and heritage detail makes this design more than just gear—it’s a tribute to the Tigers’ identity.

HBCU Adidas Bayou Classic Grambling
Built for the Big Stage

The Bayou Classic isn’t just another football game. It’s one of the crown jewels of HBCU culture, a rivalry that has defined generations. Played inside the Caesars Superdome, the annual clash between Grambling and Southern is as much about pageantry and pride as it is about football.

That’s why Adidas went all-in on a design that delivers both flash and substance. Beyond the aesthetics, the jersey speaks directly to the fans. It’s built to be worn not just on the field, but in the stands and the streets, symbolizing loyalty to the Tigers no matter where you are.

Honoring History, Embracing Style

For Grambling State, uniforms have always carried weight. They’re not just fabric and stitching—they’re tradition, history, and a reflection of the program’s enduring spirit. This new drop manages to balance all of that while giving players and fans something fresh to rally around.

With Adidas’ clean branding and Grambling’s unmistakable visuals, the jersey bridges past and present. It’s modern, bold, and game-day ready, but every detail—from the stripes to the hidden message—roots it firmly in HBCU culture.

Legendary HBCU quarterback and Super Bowl XXII MVP Doug Williams will soon be the recipient of the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award—the highest civilian honor in the United States, recognizing a lifetime of volunteerism and community service. The award will be formally presented to the former NFL quarterback during a special celebration on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Howard University’s Armour J. Blackburn Center in Washington, D.C.

A Legacy of Service Beyond the Gridiron

Williams, a Grambling State University icon and current NFL executive, is being honored for over 4,000 hours of impactful volunteer work that has improved lives and uplifted communities across the country. According to the award’s official website, this recognition—established by executive order under President George W. Bush—is reserved for individuals who dedicate thousands of hours annually to vital causes, including mental health, career development, mentorship, and community empowerment.

History-Making Player, Transformative Leader

A native of Zachary, Louisiana, Doug Williams etched his name into the annals of sports history by becoming the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, leading Washington to a 42-10 triumph over John Elway’s Denver Broncos. His spectacular performance earned him the game’s MVP honors, as he threw four touchdowns in a single quarter—an achievement that remains iconic.

Off the field, Williams has continued to break barriers and build institutions. Alongside fellow Grambling legend James “Shack” Harris, he co-founded both the Black College Football Hall of Fame and the Allstate HBCU Legacy Bowl. These initiatives have become vital pipelines for HBCU athletes, exposing more than 400 student-athletes to professional scouts from the NFL, CFL, and UFL.

Empowering the Next Generation

Williams and Harris also launched the HBCU Legacy Bowl Career Fair, an event that has created hundreds of jobs and scholarship opportunities for HBCU students across disciplines. These accomplishments speak to Williams’ lifelong commitment to equity, education, and uplifting underserved communities.

His philanthropic work continues through the Doug Williams Foundation, which exemplifies the values and mission celebrated by the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

A Pillar of Excellence in Sports and Service

In his ongoing role with the Washington Commanders and as a mentor at his beloved Grambling State, Williams exemplifies servant leadership. His career and character reflect a deep belief in ensuring others—especially young Black men and HBCU students—are not overlooked.

The upcoming ceremony at Howard University will pay tribute to his extraordinary impact—not only as a trailblazing athlete but as a changemaker whose service legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Grambling State University has launched a bold initiative to strengthen its national research profile. On July 2, the Louisiana-based HBCU introduced the Grambling Research and Resource Foundation, known as GR2. This new nonprofit aims to accelerate the university’s push toward R2 classification, deepen its research efforts, and create long-term financial stability.

The foundation is a core part of Grambling State’s upcoming 2026 strategic plan, which emphasizes innovation, graduate education, and strategic partnerships. By establishing GR2, the university signals a clear intent to lead among HBCUs in research, resource development, and academic excellence.

“GR2 is the engine behind our next chapter,” said Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr., President of Grambling State. “It represents not just a commitment to excellence, but a belief in the transformational power of HBCUs to lead in discovery, technology, and equitable access.”

Turning Momentum into Movement

Grambling State has seen consistent growth in fundraising over the past few years. For example, its most recent 1901 Day of Giving generated a record-breaking $711,907. Annual campaigns have also shown increased participation, reflecting stronger engagement from alumni and supporters.

“Our top fundraising priority remains what it has always been—scholarships for our students,” Lemelle added. “Now, GR2 gives us the tools to think bigger and build smarter. Whether we are supporting a first-generation college student, launching a new research lab, or establishing an endowed faculty chair, this foundation allows us to drive forward.”

Strong Leadership, Clear Vision

The GR2 Foundation will be governed by a diverse and experienced board. The group includes alumni with law, finance, healthcare, and engineering expertise. Their combined insight strengthens the foundation’s ability to make strategic decisions quickly and effectively to pursue R2 classification.

The board features:

  • Jon-Al Duplantier (’89), a corporate board director and former energy executive
  • Adonis Ducre (’04), a healthcare entrepreneur and M&A strategist
  • Eric Moses (’01), a finance leader at Shell North America
  • Kourtni Mason (’08), a legal and risk management expert
  • Portia Singh (’07), a biomedical engineer and HealthTech innovator

In addition, the Grambling State University has appointed faculty, staff, students, and finance representatives. Brandon A. Logan, Vice President for University Advancement and Innovation, is now GR2’s Executive Director.

“This foundation gives us the agility to act on opportunity,” Logan said. “We now have the infrastructure to scale our impact and the vision to shape the future of this HBCU.”

HBCU Grambling State University R2 classification GR2
Built for Research, Ready for Results

Grambling State has secured more than $12 million in recent research-related funding. The university received $7 million from the National Science Foundation and $500,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. These funds support faculty innovation, graduate research, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

“Our recent growth in external funding is no accident,” said Theodore Callier, Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs. “It reflects careful planning and bold execution. GR2 allows us to expand even further. We can now move faster, form stronger partnerships, and respond more strategically to new opportunities.”

The Path to R2 Status

The Carnegie Classification designates R2 status for universities that demonstrate high research activity. To qualify, institutions must:

  • Spend at least $5 million annually on research
  • Award 20 or more doctoral degrees each year
  • Sustain graduate-level infrastructure and support

Grambling State is already aligning with these standards. Its Ph.D. in Criminology and Justice Administration is active, and the university is expanding doctoral offerings in sustainability, quantum computing, and nursing.

“With GR2, we can now better support our doctoral programs,” said Dr. Connie Walton, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. “We’ll offer more research funding, fellowships, and facilities. R2 is not just a title—it’s a benchmark of our progress.”

A Clear Signal from an HBCU on the Rise

Through GR2, Grambling State University is making its intentions known. The university is ready to compete nationally, partner strategically, and grow sustainably.

“GR2 is our promise,” Logan said. “To every investor, researcher, and partner: Grambling State is ready. Whether you’re contributing to a scholarship, backing a research fellowship, or investing in campus development, you can count on this HBCU to deliver results.”

Grambling’s investment in GR2 marks a critical step in its evolution. More importantly, it sends a message: this HBCU is focused, future-ready, and built for long-term impact.

Grambling State University, one of Louisiana’s most storied public HBCUs, will receive more than $20 million in additional state funding. This follows a slate of budget approvals recently signed by Governor Jeff Landry. The new investment, passed by the Louisiana Legislature earlier this month, signals strong support for the university’s future in academics and athletics.

The funding package comes from multiple legislative acts tied to Louisiana’s Fiscal Year 2025–2026 budget. It combines operational support with capital investments to modernize facilities, expand academic programs, and strengthen the campus infrastructure at the HBCU.

“These appropriations represent more than fiscal support; they reflect trust in Grambling State’s direction and future,” said President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “This isn’t just about improvement—it’s about transformation guided by discipline, purpose, and an unwavering belief in what our university can achieve.”

A Closer Look at the Funding

The funding includes several key components:

  • $1.5 million in operational funding from House Bill 1 to support academic and administrative operations.
  • $6.7 million for renovating and expanding athletic facilities, plus $200,000 to repave College Avenue Road, funded by House Bill 460.
  • $2.7 million from House Bill 2 for a new Criminal Justice and Ph.D. in Criminology academic facility, part of an overall $18.7 million project. An additional $9.9 million from the same bill will upgrade utilities, repair critical infrastructure, and modernize the campus.
  • $2 million in projected gaming revenue from House Bill 639 to enhance athletic programs.

This marks the most significant single state investment in Grambling State University in recent memory.

Advocacy Drives Results

Grambling leaders credit this achievement to focused advocacy efforts. University officials, alumni, and University of Louisiana System members worked closely with state lawmakers throughout the legislative session. Events like HBCU Day at the Capitol and University of Louisiana System Day proved vital in showcasing the university’s needs.

“We are especially thankful to the Senate, House leadership, and our alumni in the Legislature who continue advancing our priorities,” Lemelle said.

Strengthening Both Athletics and Academics

The funding arrives at a pivotal time for GSU athletics. “This is a critical moment for GSU Athletics,” said Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “These facility upgrades are essential for supporting our student-athletes and ensuring our programs align with the university’s mission. We will execute them with discipline and purpose.”

Meanwhile, the investment in academic facilities signals a push to expand graduate programs. Specifically, the new criminal justice building supports Grambling’s launch of a Ph.D. in Criminology. This expansion reflects a growing national trend of HBCUs serving as engines of social mobility, research, and workforce development.

Grambling HBCU state funding Louisiana
Broader Implications for HBCU Funding

This commitment from Louisiana comes as HBCUs nationwide continue calling for equitable state and federal funding. For Grambling State, the money addresses long-overdue infrastructure needs and boosts competitiveness in attracting students, faculty, and athletic talent.

President Lemelle emphasized, “We thank Governor Landry and the entire Louisiana Legislature for prioritizing higher education. They clearly recognize the vital role Grambling State plays in expanding opportunity, strengthening Louisiana’s workforce, and preparing the next generation of leaders.”

A Blueprint for the Future

Grambling’s success offers a potential model for other HBCUs. It shows how strategic advocacy, political partnerships, and clear institutional goals can secure the resources, ie, state funding, needed to fuel academic growth, athletic success, and long-term community impact.

Former LSU women’s basketball star and high school coaching standout Quianna Chaney is officially joining the GSU Lady Tigers as an assistant coach for the 2025–26 season. With deep Louisiana roots and a résumé that blends elite playing experience with proven coaching success, Chaney’s arrival is a big boost for Grambling State — and a major win for HBCU hoops.

Surrounded by Winners

“When you surround yourself with winners, the conversations are just different,” said Grambling head coach Courtney Simmons. “Coach Quianna brings experience, a wealth of knowledge, and an edge I’ve been missing. GSU Women’s Basketball definitely got better today.”

That’s not just talk. Quianna Chaney comes to Grambling after a dominant seven-year run at Southern University Lab School. There she built one of Louisiana’s top high school girls basketball programs. Her teams claimed the 2022 Louisiana State Championship, finished as 2023 State Runner-Up, and secured back-to-back district titles. Along the way, she racked up Coach of the Year honors — including District Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2023, and the 2022 Stars of Stars Coach of the Year.

But her legacy started long before the sidelines.

LSU HBCU Grambling Quianna Chaney women's basketball

As a player, Chaney was a certified bucket at LSU from 2004 to 2008. Guiding the Tigers to make four straight NCAA Final Four runs. She left Baton Rouge second in school history in three-pointers made and attempted, tallying 1,345 career points. Her list of accolades includes All-SEC and All-Louisiana honors, Academic All-SEC selections, and a reputation as one of the most lethal shooters in program history.

After college, Chaney was drafted 19th overall in the 2008 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky before taking her talents overseas to play for Bota? SK in Turkey.

Now, she’s bringing that championship DNA back to the college ranks — this time at a proud HBCU.

“I am truly excited and blessed to join the Grambling State University Women’s Basketball coaching staff,” Chaney said. “When God opens new doors, I walk through them with faith and purpose. I look forward to contributing to the continued success of this historic program — it’s all about the SWAC now!”

Paul McMillan IV, one of the top-scoring guards in mid-major basketball, is ready to show his talents with HBCU basketball. The leading scorer from the MAAC last season has officially transferred to Grambling State University, giving the Tigers a major backcourt boost heading into the 2025–26 season.

McMillan arrives after a standout year at Canisius, where he averaged 20.0 points per game—ranking second in the MAAC and among the top 25 scorers nationally. The Cincinnati native brings veteran experience and a proven scoring ability to a Grambling team entering a new era under recently hired head coach Patrick Crarey.

Crarey, who spent last season as the head coach at Florida A&M (FAMU), takes over at Grambling with a fast-paced, high-tempo coaching philosophy that is expected to align perfectly with McMillan’s dynamic offensive style. His system emphasizes transition play and guard creativity, both strengths of McMillan’s game.

McMillan’s college journey includes stops at NJIT and Central Michigan before his breakout season at Canisius, where he twice scored a career-high 31 points and became the program’s first 20 PPG scorer in over a decade. Prior to college, he was a high school standout at Woodward High School (OH), finishing with 2,658 career points, seventh-most in Ohio history.

The transfer marks a significant addition to the HBCU basketball landscape. As more high-impact athletes commit to HBCU programs, McMillan’s move to Grambling is further proof of the growing competitiveness and visibility of these institutions at the national level.

With McMillan in the lineup and Crarey on the sidelines, Grambling is poised to contend in the SWAC and make noise beyond. For a proud HBCU program, this pairing signals a powerful step forward.

Aaron Glenn’s rise from Pro Bowl cornerback to head coach of the New York Jets is a story rooted in perseverance and purpose. Now leading an NFL team for the first time. Glenn is building a staff that reflects his journey, and it includes key voices from the HBCU community. Two former HBCU players, Eric Washington and Roosevelt Williams, will coach on the defensive side of the ball under veteran coordinator Steve Wilks.

Glenn’s Journey to the Top

After retiring from the NFL in 2008, Aaron Glenn took the long road to the coaching ranks. He started as a scouting intern and climbed through the roles of secondary coach and defensive coordinator. Now, as the New York Jets’ head coach. He has assembled a diverse and experienced staff, with a strong emphasis on defense and development.

Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks brings both NFL pedigree and deep HBCU ties. He began his coaching career at Johnson C. Smith as a defensive coordinator in 1995–96 and later served at Savannah State before becoming head coach in 1999. That foundation shaped his career, which has included roles with the Panthers, Cardinals, and Browns.

Eric Washington: From Grambling State to the NFL Elite

Eric Washington, a Grambling State graduate, enters his 18th NFL season with experience and results on his side. He most recently served as the Bears’ defensive coordinator in 2023. Before that, Washington worked with Wilks in Carolina for seven seasons. Coaching a dominant defensive line that helped the Panthers rank among the league’s best in sacks. Carolina finished No. 1 in sacks in 2013 and stayed in the top 10 multiple times under his watch.

Washington’s resume also includes a strong stint in Buffalo. While with the Bills, he helped lead a defense that topped the NFL in points allowed, total defense, and pass defense in 2021. Originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, he played tight end at Grambling State and graduated with a degree in education in 1993.

HBCU New York Jets NFL Aaron Glenn
Roosevelt Williams: From Tuskegee to the Big Leagues

Roosevelt Williams brings a wealth of college coaching experience and a playing background rooted in HBCU pride. Drafted by the Bears in 2002 out of Tuskegee, Williams played for five NFL teams and finished his career in the CFL.

Since 2010, he has coached at several programs, including Houston Christian, Hardin-Simmons, Lincoln University, and ASA Miami. Williams held roles ranging from defensive backs coach to head coach. Now, at 46, he takes a big step forward by joining the New York Jets’ staff.

Why Representation Matters

Recent moves by former HBCU players and coaches like DJ Williams with the Atlanta Falcons, Nick Collins with the Green Bay Packers, and Dawson Odums with the Jacksonville Jaguars underscore a growing—but still limited—wave of HBCU alumni breaking into NFL coaching ranks.

DJ Williams, the son of HBCU icon Doug Williams, has officially been named the full-time quarterbacks coach of the Atlanta Falcons. His journey from Grambling State University to the NFL coaching ranks reflects the enduring legacy of HBCU excellence in football.

Nick Collins, a Super Bowl-winning safety from Bethune-Cookman, is returning to the Green Bay Packers as part of the NFL’s prestigious Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. This opportunity marks a full-circle moment for Collins, who previously served as the Packers’ cornerbacks coach during training camp.

Meanwhile, Dawson Odums, who previously served as head coach at Norfolk State University, has joined the Jacksonville Jaguars through the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. This move highlights the increasing recognition of HBCU coaching talent at the professional level.

These examples illustrate the importance of seizing opportunities. Coaching opportunities are rare in the NFL, making each breakthrough vital. It’s not just about earning a role—it’s about maintaining a presence, gaining trust, and building networks that will enable more HBCU talent to rise in the ranks.

Eric Washington and Roosevelt Williams joining Aaron Glenn’s Jets staff fits squarely into this emerging pattern. Their journeys—and those of Williams, Collins, and Odums—prove that when given the chance, HBCU alumni can thrive and elevate the game at the highest level.

The HBCU sports community is mourning the loss of Cameron Woodall, a former standout basketball player at Grambling State University and Tougaloo College. Woodall, 26, tragically died in a 4-wheeler accident late Saturday night in Raymond, Mississippi.

The crash happened around 11:25 p.m. in the 10000 block of Midway Road, according to Interim Hinds County Coroner Jeremiah Howard. Woodall and another person were riding separate 4-wheelers when Woodall lost control and overturned. He died from his injuries at the scene. The other rider was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Woodall was well-known in his hometown and within HBCU basketball circles. After starring at Raymond High School, he continued his career at Grambling State, a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). He later transferred to Tougaloo College, an NAIA HBCU located in Jackson, Mississippi.

Emergency crews from AMR, the Byram and Raymond Volunteer Fire Departments, and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the scene. The sheriff’s office is leading the investigation.

Sheriff Tyree Jones shared his condolences publicly, saying, “My heart goes out to the family, friends, and many loved ones, and Raymond High School and the Raymond basketball community.”

Woodall left a lasting mark both on the basketball court and in the community. Those who knew him through HBCU athletics and Mississippi’s basketball scene now feel a deep sense of loss.

At this time, funeral and memorial arrangements have not been announced.

HBCU Gameday offers its heartfelt condolences to Cameron Woodall’s family, teammates, and friends. His memory will live on in the many lives he touched.

In the NFL, legacy often travels through bloodlines, and for DJ Williams, that legacy runs deep through HBCU history. The son of Doug Williams, the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, DJ is carving out his own path in the league. But it’s not one forged under center, but rather with a headset. The former Grambling quarterback has officially been named the full-time quarterbacks coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

While DJ’s career is gaining steam in the coaching ranks, his story begins just like his father’s—at Grambling State University. Doug Williams became a legend under the watchful eye of the iconic Eddie Robinson. Williams earned All-American honors and became a first-round NFL Draft pick in 1978. He went on to make history in Super Bowl XXII, leading Washington to victory and breaking racial barriers in the process.

After his playing days, Doug returned to his HBCU roots. Taking the reins at Grambling and continuing the winning tradition as head coach. It was there, in a full-circle moment, that he coached his son DJ, mentoring him not only as a quarterback but as a young man navigating the weight of a famous last name. DJ suited up in the same jersey while taking instruction from the same man who helped reshape NFL history.

Creating his own Path

DJ played quarterback for Grambling from 2011 to 2014. Starting games in all four seasons and earning his degree in 2015. After tryouts with several NFL teams, he made the pivot to coaching. A move that’s paying off in a big way. Williams joined the New Orleans Saints staff in 2019 as an offensive assistant.

In 2023, Williams helped Saints quarterback Derek Carr put together one of his best statistical seasons. Carr completed 68.4% of his passes for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns, and a 97.7 passer rating. He ranked in the NFL’s top 10 for completions, touchdowns, and efficiency. His attention to detail and quarterback development instincts didn’t go unnoticed.

Williams has also been a regular at the NFL/Black College Football Hall of Fame Quarterback Coaching Summit and served as the National Team quarterbacks coach at the 2023 Senior Bowl, further solidifying his standing among up-and-coming coaches in the league.

Now with the Atlanta Falcons, he’ll oversee a quarterback room featuring veteran Taylor Heinicke and high-upside rookie Michael Penix Jr. It’s a pivotal moment in his career. Still, one built on decades of excellence, family tradition, and the enduring power of HBCU football.

From the hallowed grounds of Grambling to the bright lights of the NFL, the Williams name remains synonymous with leadership, vision, and the unwavering spirit of HBCU excellence.

HBCU football is headed to the Las Vegas Strip. On October 25, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium, the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic will mark a major milestone —not just in location, but in legacy. Set inside the glistening confines of Allegiant Stadium, the state-of-the-art home of the Las Vegas Raiders of the NFL. The game will feature a marquee matchup between two titans of Black college football: Jackson State and Grambling State. But the spotlight won’t only be on the field. In a move that marries authenticity with innovation. Allen Media Group’s HBCUGo will be the broadcast and streaming partner of the marquee Classic.

The partnership isn’t just about airing a game. It’s about aligning a historic moment with a historic mission. A new high-profile classic backed by a Black-owned broadcast network starts a bold new chapter in the broadcast history of HBCU football.

With Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group launching HBCUGo in 2022 as a free, ad-supported streaming platform dedicated exclusively to HBCU sports and culture, the network has quietly become a go-to hub for fans who want more than just box scores. They want the band, the pageantry, the legacy—and HBCUGo delivers all of it.

More than a Game

At the heart of the game is one of Black college football’s most iconic rivalries. Jackson State vs. Grambling has been a staple of HBCU gridiron greatness for decades. Think Eddie Robinson vs. W.C. Gorden. Think Deion Sanders bringing his primetime flair to the SWAC. Think NFL-bound talent clashing in front of packed stadiums and battle-tested bands. Now, that rich history takes center stage in one of the most high-tech venues in the world, placing HBCU tradition on a stage that matches its magnitude.

Juxtaposing the timeless spirit of these two programs with the ultra-modern aesthetics of Allegiant Stadium is symbolic. HBCUs are no longer relegated to the margins of college sports. They’re thriving, innovating, and now—streaming globally with Black ownership at the wheel.

As the network continues to grow its slate of games, pregame coverage, and cultural content, the Las Vegas HBCU Classic serves as a defining moment for the surging network. One that says: Black-owned HBCU sports media isn’t coming—it’s here.

Frank “Quad” Wilson IV is embarking on a new journey. According to his Instagram, the former LSU football player has committed to Grambling State University, bringing his experience and talent to the heart of HBCU football in the SWAC. This move is a return to his Louisiana roots and a fresh opportunity to shine on the field.

High School Star in Texas

The New Orleans, LA native first made a name for himself at Brandeis High School in San Antonio, Texas. As a standout defensive back, he dominated on the field. As a junior and senior, he was first-team all-District 6A. Recording 16 interceptions in his career, including nine as a Junior. Wilson was also a stout tackler, having had two consecutive seasons with 100 or more tackles.

Following His Father: McNeese to LSU

After high school, Wilson decided to play college football at McNeese State University. He played under his father, Frank Wilson, the head coach at the time. Wilson played 10 games in two seasons at McNeese, gaining valuable experience at the FCS level.

When his father was hired as the LSU football running backs coach, Wilson followed him to Baton Rouge. Although his playing time at LSU was limited, he was part of a highly competitive SEC program and remained ready for his moment.

That moment came in the 2023 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Late in the game, with LSU leading Purdue 59-7, Wilson intercepted a pass and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown. It was the final score in a 66-7 win and a memorable highlight in his LSU career.

A New Beginning at an HBCU Powerhouse

Quad Wilson is heading to Grambling State University, a historic HBCU football program with a long and proud tradition. Under legendary coach Eddie Robinson, Grambling became one of the most successful programs in college football history. The school has produced over 200 professional players and won 15 Black college national championships.

By transferring to Grambling, he brings with him not just talent but years of experience at both the FCS and SEC levels. His understanding of elite competition can instantly make him an impact player as a graduate transfer.

Roderick Coffee III is taking his talents to Grambling State to play for former FAMU basketball coach Patrick Crarey II, he announced Monday on social media.

The 6-foot-4 guard played in 21 games last season for the Rattlers, averaging 6.0 points while shooting 39.3% from the field, 3.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per contest. In his two-year FAMU tenure, Coffee played in 58 games while registering 5.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists while shooting 80.4% from the free throw line and 35.6% from the field in nearly 23 minutes per game.

“Let’s rock,” Coffee wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

Coffee commits to GSU three days after the program introduced Crarey as the Tigers next men’s basketball coach. In one season at FAMU, Crarey led the Rattlers to their most wins since 2008 and its first SWAC Tournament berth since 2019. Jackson State eliminated FAMU 91-76 in the quarterfinals of the tournament in March.

Crarey replaces former GSU coach Donte Jackson, who departed the program to become the new men’s basketball coach at Alabama A&M. At Grambling, Jackson led the Tigers to three SWAC regular-season titles in eight seasons and a trip to the 2024 men’s NCAA Tournament.

Patrick Crarey planned to bring a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship to Florida A&M men’s basketball team when he took over the program ahead of the 2024-25 season. Despite falling short of his goal in his lone season with the Rattlers, Crarey led the Rattlers to a 13-16 record, notching 10 SWAC victories this season — compared to seven in the 2023-24 campaign — on a one-year, $150,000 contract that he signed in August at the Florida-based HBCU.

As Crarey prepares to lead Grambling State men’s basketball program following a two-month contract disagreement with FAMU, he penned a passionate note to the Rattlers’ fanbase on Monday, detailing his gratitude and his disappointment for leaving the university.

“It’s been an honor to coach at Florida A&M University this past season,” Crarey wrote in a letter on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Under unprecedented circumstances we had one of the best seasons in recent school history. …This move will hurt me and will for years to come. Upon signing last season it was my sole focus to bring a championship to FAMU.

Former Florida A&M coach Patrick Crary lands at Grambling, staying in the SWAC.
Patrick Crarey was introduced as the Grambling men’s basketball coach

… We were bringing in one of the top recruiting classes in the SWAC and I felt next season we would be a premier low major in the country. We were building the right way. …NO MATTER the obstacles I was dedicated to overcoming the odds for you. …Rattler Nation, I truly gave you EVERYTHING I had to give. … It was NEVER my intention for this to be a one year stop.”

Before Crarey departed for Grambling, FAMU previously offered him a two-year contract extension worth $330,000, a deal that he eventually agreed to. Even more, the Tallahassee Democrat reported that FAMU sought to provide a “counteroffer” to retain Crarey. However, Crarey said the Rattlers’ proposed new deal came in the “midnight hour of decision making time”, per the Democrat.

By that time, after the contract dispute and Crarey leaning into GSU’s consistent pursuit of him, he made a difficult yet necessary decision to go west and start a new chapter.

“… I thought this would be home for years to come, but God had other plans,” the letter read. “This year was very trying on me and my family mentally, physically and emotionally all I ever wanted to do was make you proud. … Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.” It is my hope that you felt the love and pride I have for you, thank you for the memories.”

Prior to Crarey’s one-year stint at FAMU, he spent 10 seasons at Washington Adventist University before starting his coaching journey at St. Thomas University in the 2021-22 season. In three seasons at STU, Crarey won a national championship in 2014, earned two Coach of the Year honors, generated four All-Sun Conference players while also leading the program to a regular season title and a second round appearance in the NAIA Tournament.

Grambling, LA — Patrick Crarey II is ready for the second chapter of his HBCU experience as he begins laying a fresh foundation at Grambling State University. The veteran coach, known for his program-building success at Florida A&M and the NAIA level, was officially introduced as the new head coach of Grambling State men’s basketball, taking over a respected program with lofty expectations.

“This is indeed a proud day for Grambling State University and an exciting new chapter for our men’s basketball program,” Grambling State AD Dr. Trayvean Scott said at the Friday morning press conference.

Crarey is no stranger to the HBCU landscape. After guiding FAMU to its most wins since 2008 and a postseason berth for the first time since 2019, he has now been entrusted with continuing Grambling’s proud basketball legacy. The new Tigers head coach made it clear: he’s here to build a winner.

“As a builder, I lay the foundation, the new one myself,” Crarey said. “I’m about relationships, then championships… to enhance the brand of Grambling and to win at the highest levels.”

Crarey acknowledged the work of his predecessor, Donte’ Jackson, who led Grambling to multiple SWAC championships.

“Much respect to my brother, Donte Jackson, aka Tae Jack,” Crarey said. “He built this program with his bare hands. I will continue the tradition on the foundation of his success.”

Crarey gave special thanks to Florida A&M for his opportunity at the Division I level. “A special thank you to President Beard and Robinson at Florida A&M for giving me the opportunity to be a Division I head coach. To Angela Suggs, who I adore — thank you. From day one to the end, you worked for me and I’ll forever be grateful.”

He also acknowledged the support of former FAMU athletic director and current Virginia State AD, Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. “To Gram Fam, Tiffany Dawn Sykes — clap for her. What’s understood doesn’t need to be said. You believed before anyone. And I’ll always love you for it.”

Looking forward, Crarey offered a vision rooted in both competitive excellence and cultural pride.

“This move was about winning within an organization that believed in my capabilities from day one,” he said. “Today starts our new journey together… What you believe about yourself, others will believe about you too.”

“It’s time to let everyone know the Tigers are here.”

The HBCU basketball world got quite a shakeup last week when Donte’ Jackson left Grambling State to take over as head coach at Alabama A&M.

The three-time SWAC Coach of The Year recently spoke with the Ruston Leader about his departure from the Louisiana HBCU for its SWAC neighbor.

“They’re doing some things when it comes to the resources they have and what they’re trying to build up. That’s the name of the game now. Kids want to be paid and it’s not as much about the other stuff like it was. The dynamic is changing,” Jackson told the paper. “That’s not to say GSU wasn’t willing to do it.”

When pressed, however, Jackson suggested Grambling State’s stance on NIL, revenue sharing, pay-for-play, etc. were all still unclear.

HBCU Alabama A&M University Donte' Jackson

“It was described to me that, ‘Oh, well we’re doing a study, and we’ll see what we can do,” Jackson said. “But to be honest, I don’t know what it looked like going forward. I never got an exact answer on how that would work. It was up in the air. Like I said, they were doing a study.”

Jackson coached at Grambling State for eight seasons after being hired by Dr. Paul Bryant — the same man who just hired him at Alabama A&M. He did go out of his way to try to quiet any rumors of bad blood between himself and his former boss, GSU AD Treyvean Scott.

“He helped me elevate the program to its highest point ever. I have no problem with him. He’s a good man,” Jackson said. “I felt like we worked well together. It was a tough decision to leave.”

Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph has coached at the Power Five/Four level as well as at multiple HBCU programs.

Joseph, who just wrapped up his first season at the iconic HBCU football program, recently did an interview in which he talked about the transfer portal.

The former LSU assistant and Nebraska interim head coach knows that the best players in his program will always be pursued by bigger schools with better resources — and most of the time they will lose.

“We understand,” Joseph told local media. “I think the kids understand if they’re here and they’re sophomores and they have a big year and a Group of Five or Power Five approaches them and they have the finances to pull them out of there and I can’t match the finances — then you know what — they’re gonna go. That’s part of it. Coaches been doing it for years. So we shouldn’t get mad as coaches when these kids make decisions to take care of their family. I’m going to say it again — coaches’ been doing it for years.”

However Joseph says he believes there should be some compensation owed when his HBCU or other schools lose players to bigger schools.

“But I also think there needs to be a buyout. If they move up from me and go up to a Group of Five/Power Five, I should get kind of a compensation for that. So NCAA, if you’re listening to me — I need a buyout.”

Joseph isn’t the first HBCU coach to propose such an exchange. Last year Norfolk State men’s basketball head coach Robert Jones.

Robert Jones, Norfolk State, JUCO, HBCU

“Unpopular opinion: what if college players have buyouts like college coaches?” Jones posted on X last May. “Players/coaches should be able to go wherever they want BUT when a coach leave(s) he has to pay back a buyout clause usually. Well what about if a player leave(s) he pays a % of his new NIL deal? Hmmmm.”

So far, there have been no official proposal to the NCAA on behalf of smaller schools looking to get compensation when losing athletes to bigger schools. Could the HBCU world lead the way on that?

Let us know in the comments below.

GRAMBLING, La. |  As part of its ongoing commitment to excellence and strategic growth, Grambling State University has partnered with College Sports Solutions (CSS) to conduct a comprehensive operational review of its intercollegiate athletics program.

The engagement, which officially began on March 17, 2025, is designed to position GSU Athletics for long-term success by evaluating current operations and identifying forward-looking strategies that align with the university’s mission, values, and future aspirations.

Dr. Trayvean Scott, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, expressed enthusiasm for the engagement and the opportunity it presents for GSU Athletics.  “This is about elevating every aspect of the student-athlete experience while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our programs,” said Dr. Scott. “CSS understands the landscape of HBCU athletics and the competitive demands of today’s college sports environment. Their insights will be invaluable as we strive to build a model athletics program grounded in integrity, innovation, and impact.”

The timing of this engagement is especially critical. As the landscape of NCAA Division I athletics continues to evolve—with ongoing realignment, expanding media rights deals, and the emergence of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities—institutions like Grambling State must be proactive in evaluating how to remain competitive, compliant, and student-centered. This work will help ensure that GSU Athletics is well-positioned to thrive amid these rapidly shifting dynamics.

College Sports Solutions is a nationally respected consulting firm with extensive experience working with collegiate athletics programs, including several within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

President Martin Lemelle, Jr. emphasized the significance of this initiative in advancing the university’s vision for athletic and institutional distinction.

“Grambling State’s athletic legacy is iconic, and our future must be just as bold. Engaging College Sports Solutions is a decisive step in ensuring that our athletics program is built not just to compete—but to lead,” said Grambling State President Martin Lemelle, Jr. “We are building a culture of excellence on and off the field, and this engagement will help us chart a path that honors our past while preparing for a dynamic and competitive future.”

The review will assess key components of the athletics program, including organizational structure, financial operations, compliance, student-athlete welfare, facilities, and Title IX/gender equity. It will also include benchmarking against peer and aspirational institutions to inform strategic decision-making.

The final report from CSS will include actionable recommendations and will serve as a foundational tool in the university’s continued strategic planning for athletics. Grambling State University anticipates completing the engagement by June 30, 2025.

ATLANTA — Grambling State women’s basketball coach Courtney Simmons apologized for her behavior in GSU’s 57-47 loss to Jackson State on Thursday in the HBCU WBB quarterfinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament in Atlanta.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Simmons picked up her second technical foul with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter. After Tigers guard Kahia Warmsley missed a solid opportunity from beyond the arc. Jackson State claimed the defensive rebound with 15 seconds left in regulation. Immediately after JSU secured the ball, Simmons tossed her Expo dry-erase marker in the air, resulting in the second infraction and being removed from the game. Simmons notched her first technical foul in reference to a call made by an official on the court with 2:56 to play in the second quarter.

Simmons takes accountability

“It doesn’t matter how big the moment is,” Simmons said after the Tigers’ loss. “It doesn’t matter what the situation is. …I was wrong, and I take full responsibility. I embarrassed myself, I embarrassed my team, I embarrassed my AD [Dr. Trayvean Scott] and for that I am extremely sorry. But … I am a competitor, and that dog in me, you know, wanted that victory real bad. … But I tell my team all the time … your feelings can’t matter inside those four lines, and I allowed my feelings to dictate my actions. I take full responsibility.”

Simmons, who is in her second season at GSU (15-15, 12-6), guided the Tigers to the No. 5 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. With the loss to Jackson State, Grambling was eliminated from the tournament. Last season, Alcorn eliminated Grambling 61-59 in the semifinals of the league’s tournament.

Grambling entered the 2024-25 season as the top team in the SWAC’s preseason poll. However, GSU overcame a rocky start to the season in non-conference play. Losing to teams like California, Arizona, Oregon State, Tulsa, LSU, and Louisville all on the road. Before dropping six league contests. Including three at home against Bethune Cookman, JSU, and Southern  — to claw its way to the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Where does Grambling go from here?

With the transfer portal and NIL dominating HBCU hoops and the college athletics landscape as a whole, Simmons also found herself navigating 10 new players to the program, repeating the process of what she did in her first season leading the program. But to the Tigers’ coach, the transfer portal has become a normal practice that will not be removed anytime soon.

“I’m tired,” Simmons said. “I’d rather not have to sign 10 kids, potentially may have to sign eight or nine in this offseason. That’s the beauty of the transfer portal, right? … I’d like to have kids for more than one year, but in this league when so many of the kids are older and mature. You got to get those mature and seasoned kids to try to compete with the top half of the league. …That’s my goal, to always finish in the top half of the league. I finished fifth this year. … I take full responsibility for that. …I got to get some kids with a little bit more grit. We got to be able to grind those wins out. The SWAC is tough.”

While Grambling’s HBCU basketball season is over, Simmons plans to get back to the drawing board immediately in preparing her team to bounce back stronger in the 2025-26 campaign.

Previous Encounter: A Different Outcome

In their last meeting during the regular season, Southern University emerged victorious with a 71-64 win over Grambling State. That game was characterized by Southern’s defensive prowess and clutch shooting in the final minutes. However, the Tigers analyzed their previous shortcomings and adjusted their game plan accordingly for the tournament matchup.

Implications for the SWAC Tournament and HBCU Basketball

Southern University came into March as one of the elite programs in HBCU basketball. Its unexpected early exit from the tournament is sure to shake up the SWAC Tournament and open the door for other teams to vie for the championship.

As the tournament progresses, Grambling State’s momentum positions them as a formidable contender. Their ability to execute under pressure and adapt strategies based on previous encounters demonstrates a level of maturity and preparedness that could propel them further in the competition.

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama head football coach Major Applewhite has announced the hiring of Broderick Fobbs as the program’s new running backs coach. Fobbs was an HBCU football head coach at Grambling State University from 2014-2021.

No stranger to the Sun Belt Conference, Fobbs comes to South Alabama by way of ULM where he coached the Warhawks’ running backs in 2023 and 2024. Fobbs’ star pupil at ULM was running back Ahmad Hardy, who was named the 2024 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. Hardy ranked 12th in the nation and first in the conference with 1,351 rushing yards, and his 13 rushing touchdowns were the most in the league.

Prior to his time in Monroe, Fobbs was the head coach at Grambling State for eight seasons. In 2017, Fobbs led Grambling State to an overall record of 11-2, ending the season with an appearance in the Celebration Bowl. The Tigers repeated as SWAC Champions, beating Alcorn State, 40-32, and enjoyed classic wins over Clark Atlanta, Prairie View A&M and rival Southern. The four-time SWAC Coach of the Year and three-time Fritz Pollard award winner led the Tigers to a final ranking of 14th in the FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll.

In 2016, Fobbs led the Tigers to an overall record of 12-1, ending the season as SWAC Champions, Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl Champions and HBCU National Champions. After repeating as SWAC Western Division champions, winning the 2016 SWAC championship game and defeating North Carolina Central University 10-9 in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, the Tigers were recognized as one of the top teams in FCS football. Grambling finished the 2016 season on an 11-game winning streak, earning the program’s 25th SWAC title (the first since 2011) and 15th HBCU Football National title – its first since 2008. The Tigers finished the 2016 season ranked 15th in the final FCS Coaches Poll and 16th in the final FCS STATS poll.

In his first three years as a head coach, Fobbs won three SWAC Coach of the Year awards and led the Tigers to a 25-2 regular-season conference record – including back-to-back undefeated conference regular seasons. In addition to being named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2016, Fobbs was also named the Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year, HERO Sports FCS Football Coach of the Year, BOXTOROW Co-Coach of the Year, 3x Fitz Pollard Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the FCS Eddie Robinson Award.

In 2014, Fobbs was named SWAC Coach of the Year, Louisiana Sports Writers Coach of the Year, Black College HOF Sports Writers Coach of the Year, and Sheridan Broadcasting Network Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year and was named a FCS Eddie Robinson Award Finalist. The success continued into Fobbs’ second year at Grambling as he guided the team to an undefeated regular season conference record (9-0) – the first undefeated regular-season record by a SWAC school since Grambling finished 7-0 in 2008 – and a western division championship.

Before earning the head coaching job at Grambling, Fobbs was the tight ends coach at McNeese State in 2013 before working there as the co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach from 2007 to 2011. Between stints with the Cowboys, Fobbs spent the 2012 campaign at Southern Miss as receivers coach.

Fobbs started his coaching career at Louisiana as a graduate assistant in 2000. He then earned his first full-time job at Northwestern State as a tight ends coach in 2003. Fobbs spent two seasons in that role before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach in 2005. During his time at NSU, Fobbs completed an NFL Minority Internship with the Buffalo Bills.

Fobbs was a two-time team captain at Grambling, where he won the 1992 HBCU National Championship, defeating Florida A&M 45-15 in the Heritage Bowl. Grambling State was also a co-champion of the SWAC in 1994. He led the conference in yards per carry, averaging 7.1 yards/carry his senior year. He racked up more than 1,500 rushing yards during his college football career. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Grambling in 1997.

Fobbs is married to the former Kimbia Jones. The couple has two children, Kyndal and Rylee.

LAS VEGAS – The Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) will present the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic between two storied HBCU football programs, Grambling State University and Jackson State University, on October 25, 2025, at Allegiant Stadium.

The landmark event will celebrate the rich legacy and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), showcasing one of college football’s most storied rivalries. The matchup will mark the 73rd all-time meeting between the two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) programs. Grambling earned a 41-20 victory in the last meeting on September 21, 2024.

“The Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium are proud to host the HBCU Classic, celebrating the rich legacy, talent, and culture of Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan. “The Raiders organization has a deep and long-standing connection to HBCU football that dates to the early years of the franchise under Al Davis and includes three Pro Football Hall of Famers from HBCU programs, the first Black quarterback selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, the first Black head coach in modern NFL history, and dozens of outstanding players, coaches, and administrators. We eagerly anticipate the pride and passion of HBCU football visiting Las Vegas in October.”

The first Las Vegas HBCU Classic will extend far beyond the Allegiant Stadium playing field, showcasing two of college football’s most celebrated marching bands: Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band and Jackson State’s internationally renowned “Sonic Boom of the South.”

“We are proud to welcome Grambling and Jackson State to Las Vegas in October for this historic HBCU matchup,” said Steve Hill, president and CEO of the LVCVA.  “This game is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of culture, tradition, and community that resonates far beyond the field. We look forward to showcasing the excitement and hospitality Las Vegas has to offer to the teams, alumni, and fans.”

The contest marks Grambling’s second appearance in the “Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World,” following a 2002 matchup against Tennessee State at Sam Boyd Stadium. Grambling’s “World Famed” Tiger Marching Band also performed at halftime of a Raiders game during the 2021 season. Jackson State returns for its third visit after facing UNLV in 1975 and 2016. Las Vegas last hosted an HBCU football program on September 2, 2017, when Howard University shocked UNLV as a heavy underdog in one of college football’s most stunning upsets.

Presales for tickets and fan experience travel packages will go on sale on March 3, offering attendees exclusive opportunities to take in the game and the best of Las Vegas, and the public on sale will begin on March 7. For information on travel packages and tickets, visit allegiantstadium.com/lvhbcuclassic or @lvhbcuclassic on Instagram and X.

Broadcast details, kickoff time, and credential information will be announced at a later date.

Jackson State and Grambling State, — two of the biggest brands in HBCU football — will soon be meeting in Las Vegas.

The two teams are set to meet on Oct. 25 at Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders according to a report by HBCU Sports.

Steve Hill, CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, announced a $350k sponsorship of the game.

“Fifty-five players from the Raiders have come from HBCUs. There are all kinds of alumni in our community,” Hill said via the Las Vegas Sun.“Anybody putting on an event that wants to bring a spotlight to them, when they choose Las Vegas, it is going to elevate that game.”

Grambling State, Jackson State, HBCU

The two programs are amongst the most storied in HBCU and FCS football. Both have four Pro Football Hall of Famers and have produced hundreds of NFL Draft picks.

However, the two programs are in different places heading into 2025. Grambling State failed to record a winning record for the fifth consecutive season in its first year under head coach Mickey Joseph.

Jackson State, meanwhile, is coming off an impressive 12-2 season under head coach TC Taylor. The program won its third SWAC title in four seasons and claimed the HBCU national title after winning the Celebration Bowl. However, Grambling State did hand Jackson State one of its losses in a non-conference matchup.

Trayvean D. Scott, Grambling State University’s Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics releases a letter announcing that the HBCU will be announcing the new Athletics Annual Fund, in light of the preliminary approval of the House v. NCAA case, paving the way for athletic departments to begin sharing revenue directly with student-athletes. Read his letter below.

Dear GramFam,

The landscape of intercollegiate athletics is transforming right before our eyes. The era of conference realignment, Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), the transfer portal, and litigation challenges have led to a revolution across the collegiate athletics landscape. From the beginning, the staff and coaches of Grambling Athletics have demonstrated innovation and resilience in navigating these new and unchartered territories.

In October 2024, U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken gave preliminary approval on the settlement in the House v. NCAA case, paving the way for athletic departments to begin sharing revenue directly with student-athletes. The calendar has transitioned to 2025, and we’re excited to transition NIL giving internally at GSU, a move made possible by the anticipated outcome of the House settlement.

As we continue to work to enhance the student-athlete experience at GSU, we will be announcing the new GSU Athletics Annual Fund, which will allow us to support TiGerNIL in a more profound way. The new annual fund will also be critical to funding scholarships and provide financial support to GSU Athletics for the future. Additional details will be coming soon, but if you are interested in learning how to support NIL opportunities for our student-athletes, please contact a member of our championship resources staff at 318.274.2374.

In addition to permitting revenue-sharing, the legal settlement would replace scholarship limits with roster caps. This will provide us with the opportunity to add scholarship support to several of our varsity programs. The settlement also provides back damages to student-athletes who competed from 2016-24, a total of nearly $2.8 billion.

While we support the proposed settlement and the new opportunities it provides for our student-athletes, it also creates significant financial challenges for our department. In all, we anticipate new expenses to reach roughly $300,000 annually for the next ten years, totaling $3 million over that timeframe.

Grambling State University Athletics has developed a comprehensive new strategy and structure not just to navigate this new collegiate landscape, but to thrive in it. While we will be evaluating targeted reductions in operating expenses, we know that we cannot grow our program by cuts. Our focus must continue to be on revenue growth to maintain competitive relevance in this new era, while preserving our storied history of winning championships.

The forthcoming transition to the new revenue-based model will provide a solid foundation for future growth. This past year, we unveiled The Courtside Tigers, a terrific new premium club overlooking the court in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center that provides a best-in-class member experience as well as new revenues for our department. We are also actively revitalizing our ticket sales & annual fund plans, investing in major gift fundraising, and exploring additional premium amenities in and around the athletics footprint.

Grambling

Moving forward, we will be asking you to continue and augment your support of Grambling State Athletics. To remain competitive, we will need to significantly grow our resources. To that end, I ask you to do the following:

1. Renew your season tickets, whether it’s for football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball or all four;
2. Renew your TiGer Club membership or consider upgrading your membership level;
3. Support forthcoming fundraising campaigns;
4. Recruit new fans and members to the GramFam

The recent success of Grambling State Athletics has been the result of dedicated administrators and coaches, outstanding student-athletes, and generous support from donors like you. We renovated and enhanced the GSU Soccer Complex. Wilbert Ellis Field at R.W.E Jones Park will see significant upgrades in the coming days by way of new field padding in and around the stadium. The GSU Softball complex received similar upgrades along with new netting for their facility, as well.  The GSU football program will undergo their long-awaited locker room renovation to be completed this summer.  We’ve also invested in new state-of-the-art video boards and sound systems at Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center and Eddie G. Robinson Stadium in conjunction with our partners at the Grambling University Foundation.  And, as we look forward to the future of GSU athletics, fans and stakeholders can expect a facilities master plan that will position Grambling State Athletics for future success.

To continue the positive momentum forward, we will be asking you to continue supporting and elevating Grambling State Athletics, your contributions, ticket purchases and more, while we continue to emphasize our mission to educate, unite, inspire, and empower through athletics.  Even more, we ask for your help in recruiting more investors and fans to the #Gramfam, as there is incredible strength in support in numbers.

Thank you for being an integral part of this journey and for your unwavering commitment to GSU and our student-athletes. You absolutely make a difference in advancing our intercollegiate athletics program and helping position it as the best, most unique, in the nation. Best wishes to you and your family for a great 2025! I look forward to seeing you inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center as our men and women make a run for March Madness.

Go Tigers!

Decoldest Crawford, one of college football’s greatest names of all-time, is heading to an HBCU to reunite with his former coach Mickey Joseph.

The talented wide receiver is headed to Grambling State University. GSU is coached by Joseph, who recruited him to LSU when he committed there back in 2019. Crawford never played at LSU, however, as he ultimately flipped his commitment to Nebraska, where Joseph was on staff.

Decoldest Crawford, HBCU, Mickey Joseph

Mickey Joseph actually became the interim head coach at Nebraska that season after Scott Frost was fired, but Decoldest Crawford never played for him as he missed the entire 2022 season due to injury.

Crawford returned to Louisiana in 2023, joining Louisiana Tech, but caught just two passes for 17 yards as he mostly played on special teams. Both of his catches, ironically, came against Nebraska.

Joseph would sit out the 2023 season after being dismissed from Nebraska, but re-emerged as the head coach at Grambling State. Now the two are reunited as they will look to help GSU get back to championship form for the first time since 2017 when it won its most recent SWAC championship. That is the longest championship drought in school history for the proud HBCU program that has produced hundreds of NFL players and multiple Pro Football Hall of Famers. But it has never had a Decoldest Crawford, until now.

A little over a year after being fired from his HBCU job, Hue Jackson is set to take over a college football offense at Georgia State.

Jackson has reportedly been named offensive coordinator at GSU, according to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports. Jackson served as an analyst on the staff during the 2024 season after being fired as head coach at Grambling State.

Hue Jackson is best known for his stints as an NFL coach with the Cleveland Browns and Oakland Raiders, but he does have an extensive college football background, including time at two HBCU football programs.

Jackson spent one season at Tennessee State, serving as offensive coordinator under rookie head coach Eddie George in 2021. He was hired as head coach at Grambling State in December of that year.

Jackson went 8-14 in two seasons as head coach at Grambling State University. He went 5-6 in 2023, concluding with a 27-22 loss to Southern University in the Bayou Classic.

He signed a five-year deal that paid him $400,000 per year in base salary. However, according to the school’s revenue and expense report, Jackson received total compensation of $783,585 in 2022 thanks to a clause that entitled him to 25 percent of of any new monies he brought into the university through promotions, sponsorships or other initiatives according to a report by Sportico. He was fired by Grambling State following the 2023 season.

Now Jackson will be back in the booth as an offensive coordinator for Georgia State.

Czavian “Zae” Teasett, one of the most promising quarterbacks in HBCU football, has announced his transfer from Southern University to Grambling State University. This high-profile move adds fuel to the already intense SWAC rivalry between the two storied programs and positions Grambling for a potential resurgence in the 2025 season with a veteran signal caller.

Teasett, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, made a significant impact during the 2024 season with Southern. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Teasett completed 71 of 129 passes for 941 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the ground, he added 217 rushing yards and one touchdown on 39 carries. His impressive early-season performances earned him the title of SWAC Player of the Week in Week 2 and an Honorable Mention for the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week in September.

Despite his achievements, Teasett’s time at Southern took a turn late in the season when the coaching staff shifted their focus to freshman quarterback Jalen Woods. Woods led the Jaguars to a 24-14 victory over Grambling in the 51st Annual Bayou Classic, a hallmark event in HBCU and SWAC football. Following this, Teasett entered the NCAA transfer portal in December, seeking a fresh start.

A Rivalry Rekindled in the SWAC

The move to Grambling State not only gives Teasett a chance to showcase his skills in a new environment but also heightens the stakes in the legendary Southern-Grambling rivalry. Southern dominated the SWAC West in 2024 with a 7-1 conference record and emerged as one of the top programs in HBCU football. Grambling, on the other hand, struggled with a 2-6 conference record, underscoring the need for a game-changer like Teasett.

Coach Mickey Joseph at Grambling is rebuilding the Grambling State University program, and Teasett’s arrival could be a cornerstone for their future success. His ability to make plays with both his arm and legs aligns well with the Tigers’ need for a dynamic leader on offense.

HBCU Football Landscape Shifting

Teasett’s transfer highlights the growing competition within HBCU football and the SWAC conference. The transfer portal has become a pivotal tool for programs to bolster their rosters and compete at the highest level of HBCU athletics. For Grambling, landing Teasett signals their intent to return to the top tier of the SWAC.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Bayou Classic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games in HBCU football. With Teasett now wearing the black and gold of Grambling, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown against his former team.

Teasett’s journey is more than a personal comeback—it’s a reminder of the excitement, talent, and passion that define HBCU football and the SWAC. His transfer is poised to make waves in the conference and elevate one of the greatest rivalries in college sports to new heights.

A four-star prospect out of high school, Jones came to the Louisiana-based HBCU from the University of Memphis. He played in four games as a freshman in 2021 before being redshirted. He appeared in 10 games the following season, totaling four tackles and a sack — all coming against Mississippi State.

He then transferred to Grambling State where he saw action in just two games during the 2023 season.

Jones, a native of Marrero, La., had a sensational season for Grambling State, tallying 122.0 total tackles (57 solo), 20.5 tackles of loss, 3.0 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one defensive touchdown. He was named the league’s co-Defensive Player of The Year.

HBCU, Andrew Jones, Grambling State, SEC, South Carolina
Andrew Jones had a big year in the SWAC after starting his career at the University of Memphis.

His total tackles ranked him first in the SWAC and sixth nationally, while his tackles for were tied for second in the SWAC and fourth in FCS.

Jones registered double-digit tackles in 10 of GSU’s 12 games, including logging a season-high 15 tackles on Nov. 14 versus Alabama A&M.

South Carolina has picked up a breakout player from an HBCU before. The SEC squad landed former South Carolina State running back Jawarn Howell, who was a freshman All-American with the MEAC squad. He played in just four games in 2024, rushing for 92 yards on 14 carries and one score, but announced he will be back after getting an NIL deal.

Grambling State head coach Courtney Simmons did not mince words following the HBCU squad’s crushing 46-point loss to LSU. The game was a stark reminder of the financial and competitive disparities HBCUs face when taking on Power Four teams in so-called “money games.” For Simmons, the experience illuminated a critical issue: the cost of survival versus the toll on her players’ morale.

“You have to be careful with playing this many Power Five games,” Simmons stated. “There’s a thing called confidence, right? And losses like this can kill kids’ confidence. Nothing about this prepares you for SWAC play.”

Her candid remarks underscore the unique challenges HBCU programs encounter as they balance financial obligations with their athletes’ mental and physical well-being.

https://twitter.com/tvtimewithjb/status/1865970250618921296?s=46&t=3ZZ7X6Mnlx-cSwYHgTYU7A

Grambling State, who shot just 29.4% from the field compared to LSU’s 48.7%, struggled to keep pace. Grambling State was outscored 58-28 in the paint and 31-7 in second-chance points. Despite these numbers, Simmons explained that the program’s financial realities leave little choice but to accept these lopsided matchups.

“These are money games. We play these games to get the money so we can survive, and in our league, that is it. That is all,” Simmons revealed. “I would rather not ever play LSU again, but they pay us good money to come here and take a loss.”

For Simmons, the financial necessity clashes with her competitive instincts and long-term goals for her team. “I played high-level basketball. I played at the University of Louisville. I know what major basketball looks like,” she said. “Nothing about getting the snot beat out of us helps us for league play.”

The coach also pointed out the differing approaches to non-conference scheduling among SWAC programs, including rival Southern. “I’m not as experienced as Carlos Funchess, down there at Southern. They are going to schedule ten of their 11 non-conference games against Power Five teams and go get $40,000 apiece,” she said. “But their kids are used to that. I’m the only team in the league that didn’t go get other SWAC players. And so for my kids, a majority of them came from the Sun Belt…”

Simmons’ comments highlight the broader struggles HBCUs face when competing on uneven playing fields. While games against Power Four teams bring significant financial benefits, they often come at the expense of player development and confidence. As Simmons put it, “It sounds good to say, but nothing about this prepares you for SWAC play.”

Conversely, her Grambling State team has a 131-30 win over Division III Cenetary earlier this year.

The loss to LSU is just one example of the challenges HBCU teams confront. While LSU’s star Aneesah Morrow dominated with 26 points and 16 rebounds, Simmons focused on ensuring her team does not carry the weight of these losses into conference play. “Right now, it’s just a matter of not killing their confidence so that we are prepared for SWAC play and don’t lose our first two games in the league.”

For Simmons, the takeaway is clear: “Nobody is going to sit at a press conference and tell you these were moral victories. That’s not real life.”

Her unfiltered perspective serves as a rallying cry for greater investment in HBCU sports programs to reduce reliance on these difficult matchups and create more equitable opportunities for their athletes.

Grambling State University, a prominent HBCU, is gearing up to face the Florida Gators after nearly pulling off an upset against another SEC powerhouse, Ole Miss, last week. GSU showcased their potential by leading 33-25 at halftime against the No. 24 squad, eventually falling just short with a 66-64 loss. This performance has set the stage for an exciting matchup as Grambling State aims to make a statement against another SEC opponent.

In their recent encounter with Ole Miss, Grambling State’s key players delivered impressive performances. Senior guard Kintavious Dozier led the team with 15 points and five rebounds, while junior forward Ernest Ross contributed 12.5 points and 7 rebounds. Mikale Stevenson added 13.5 points and 3.5 assists, demonstrating the depth of talent within the HBCU’s roster. The Tigers’ defense was formidable, holding the Rebels to a .305 field-goal percentage and outrebounding them 39-33, a notable feat against an SEC team.

As they prepare to face the Gators, the Tigers are focused on refining their strategies to capitalize on the Gators’ weaknesses.

Florida, currently 2-0, has shown vulnerabilities despite their victories. UF has struggled with rebounding, being stalemated on the glass overall and at a deficit on the offensive end. Grambling State, having out-rebounded Ole Miss, sees this as an opportunity to leverage their strengths.

Florida,

The upcoming game is more than just another matchup; it’s a chance for an HBCU to shine on a national stage against a prestigious SEC program. Grambling State is the reigning SWAC men’s basketball champion and won its first NCAA Tournament game in the spring.

Grambling State, HBCU

Florida’s lineup features standout players like guard Walter Clayton Jr., averaging 19 points per game, and forward Alex Condon, who boasts an impressive 92.3% field-goal percentage. The Gators will look to improve their rebounding and three-point shooting against the Tigers. However, with Grambling State’s confidence and proven ability to challenge SEC teams, the Gators cannot afford to underestimate this HBCU opponent.

The clash between Grambling State and Florida promises to be an exciting contest, highlighting the competitive spirit of an HBCU taking on an SEC giant. As the Tigers aim to secure a landmark victory, fans can expect a thrilling game that underscores the depth and talent present across college basketball’s diverse landscape.

GRAMBLING, La. | The Grambling State women’s basketball team turned in a performance for the ages on Tuesday night, demolishing Centenary 131-30 at Willis Reed Court inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. The Lady Tigers exploded out of the gates with fast-paced, full-court pressure that left Centenary scrambling all game long. The win marked one of the most dominant performances in recent memory for Grambling State.

Kahia Warmsley finished as the game’s leading scorer with 24 points, while Arianna Mosley added 18 and Douthsine Prien contributed 17. Lydia Freeman had a standout performance, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Tigers’ offense was unstoppable, and their defense was equally relentless, forcing turnovers and converting them into points.

The game began with both teams exchanging quick baskets, but Grambling State wasted no time asserting control. Kaia Warmsley got things started for the Lady Tigers with a smooth mid-range jumper, setting the tone for the night. Solid backcourt defense from GSU led to an and-one layup from Douthsine Prien, sparking a defensive and offensive blitz that left Centenary overwhelmed.

Grambling’s defense forced 20 turnovers in the first half alone, while the Lady Tigers turned the ball over just twice.

The first quarter was nothing short of spectacular, as the Lady Tigers unleashed a 41-0 run. Grambling State shot a scorching 72% from the field (21-29), leaving Centenary with no answer defensively. The Tigers led 51-6 after the opening period, showcasing their intensity on both ends of the floor.

In the second quarter, Grambling State’s high-pressure defense continued to stifle Centenary, leading to more turnovers and easy fast-break opportunities. GSU went on another devastating run, this time a 40-3 surge that put the game well out of reach.

The Lady Tigers shot 14-24 in the second quarter, maintaining their offensive efficiency while holding Centenary to just three points. At halftime, Grambling State held a commanding 91-9 lead, with three players already in double figures.

After the break, Grambling State eased off the full-court press but showed no signs of slowing down. The Tigers continued to build their lead, reaching 100 points with less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. GSU outscored Centenary 22-11 in the third period, pushing the score to 113-20 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Grambling State cruised to a 131-30 victory, with the team showing remarkable depth and efficiency. The 131 points marked the most scored by the Lady Tigers since January 2, 2024, when they posted 159 points against the College of Biblical Studies.

The win was a complete team effort, with the Tigers dominating both offensively and defensively from start to finish.

Grambling State University (GSU), a storied HBCU with a rich athletic tradition, stormed onto the court in their season opener, delivering a jaw-dropping first-half performance.

GSU’s women’s basketball team scored an astounding 91 points by halftime against Centenary College on November 4, 2024, demonstrating their offensive prowess and setting the tone for the season.

GSU, known for its competitive spirit and legacy as an HBCU powerhouse, showcased incredible shooting accuracy and tenacity, particularly in the first two quarters. They scored 51 points in the first quarter alone, followed by another 40 in the second, placing Centenary far behind and underlining GSU’s dominance.

Grambling State University, HBCU

Standouts included Kahia Warmsley, who went an impressive 9-for-9 from the field, along with sharpshooter Douthsine Prien, both key players in this historic first-half offensive surge. Warmsley had 22 points — more than doubling Centenary College’s total — while Prien had 15 points.

The Lady Tigers’ aggressive defense and swift ball movement forced Centenary into numerous turnovers, which GSU quickly converted into points. By halftime, they led with a stunning margin, reflecting both their offensive efficiency and defensive pressure.

This isn’t the first time the HBCU squad has put up huge numbers. Last fall, Grambling State University beat the College of Biblical Studies 159-18 in a non-conference matchup. We’ll have to see what the final score of this one will be.
