TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida A&M University (FAMU) has named John F. Davis, a veteran business and government leader, as its next vice president and director of athletics, signaling what President Marva Johnson calls “a new era of innovation, fiscal discipline, and transformational leadership” for Rattler Athletics. Davis will officially begin his role on January 5, 2026.

In a dual announcement, Angela Suggs, a respected FAMU alumna and former athletic administrator, will return to campus as special assistant to the president and advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics. She began her new role on November 10. Interim AD Michael Smith will continue to guide the department through the transition.

Business Leadership Meets HBCU Athletics

President Johnson said Davis’ record of managing complex organizations and driving measurable growth made him an ideal fit to lead FAMU Athletics in an evolving collegiate landscape shaped by NIL, realignment, and rising financial pressures.

“John Davis is a dynamic and results-oriented leader who brings more than three decades of executive experience in leading large-scale organizations, building high-performing teams, and driving strategic growth across Florida,” Johnson said. “His broad leadership experience and business acumen will ensure that FAMU remains a model of integrity, innovation, and opportunity.”

Davis currently serves as secretary of the Florida Lottery, where he’s led the agency through unprecedented growth, turning it into a $9 billion enterprise that supports public education across the state. Under his direction, the Lottery achieved record-breaking revenue and retained its position as the No. 1 lottery in the nation for total sales.

Before joining state government, Davis led the Orlando Regional Chamber and the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, overseeing major increases in membership, revenue, and partnerships.

“A Business Approach to College Athletics”

A former Florida State football player under Coach Bobby Bowden, Davis brings both business acumen and a firsthand understanding of student-athlete life.

“It is an honor to take on the role of Vice President and Director of Athletics at FAMU,” Davis said. “Collegiate athletics is a business enterprise evolving alongside professional sports. To advance a new trajectory for FAMU Athletics, I plan to leverage my experience across public and private sectors — and my roots as a student-athlete — to elevate the Rattler brand.”

He added that his statewide network of partnerships will help FAMU expand its resources and visibility.

“Working with our student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and supporters, we will build on FAMU’s proud legacy of excellence and take Rattler Athletics to even greater heights.”

Suggs Returns to Guide Strategy and Alignment

Suggs’ new role places her at the intersection of university leadership and athletics. As advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics, she will serve as a senior strategist to President Johnson, ensuring FAMU’s athletics program remains aligned with the university’s mission, academic goals, and branding.

“Angela Suggs possesses a wealth of experience in intercollegiate athletics administration and a comprehensive understanding of NCAA and SWAC regulations,” Johnson said. “Her expertise will help us strengthen operations and position FAMU for long-term success.”

Suggs, who previously served as the university’s athletic director, expressed excitement to rejoin her alma mater.

“I’m excited to see John Davis lead Florida A&M University Athletics, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the continued success of my alma mater,” she said. “President Johnson’s visionary leadership will position this institution for transformative growth.”

A Rattler With a Record of Results

Beyond his professional achievements, Davis has been honored statewide for his leadership and community impact. His accolades include recognition from Florida Trend Magazine, Orlando Business Journal, and ONYX Magazine, along with awards from Florida State University, 5000 Role Models of Excellence, and MAN UP Mentoring.

A native of Pahokee, Florida, Davis currently serves as vice chair of the Valencia College Board of Trustees and previously chaired Volunteer Florida’s Board of Commissioners.

What’s Next for FAMU Athletics

Davis’ appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Florida A&M, who continues to elevate its national profile within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). His experience in organizational growth, financial strategy, and partnership development could help FAMU strengthen its athletic infrastructure and position the program for sustained excellence.

With Suggs’ return to the executive team, President Johnson’s administration is doubling down on integrating athletics with the broader mission of academic and institutional advancement — a move many see as a model for modern HBCU governance.

TALLAHASSEE — What had been billed as a stop on the conservative movement BLEXIT’s “Educate to Liberate” campus tour at Florida A&M University (FAMU) during its Homecoming week has been canceled, organizers announced this week. The tour, launched by activist and commentator Candace Owens and affiliated with Turning Point USA, was scheduled to appear at FAMU on Oct. 17 during the week-long “Eternal World Tour” Homecoming celebration.

According to promotional materials, the event was intended to spark conversation on historically Black college and university (HBCU) campuses about issues of empowerment, personal responsibility, and alternative political perspectives.

However, the FAMU stop was pulled from the itinerary without a public explanation. “We will announce a new date soon,” a spokesperson said in an email the day the tour stop was planned, without explaining the reason for the event’s being called off, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

The cancellation comes as students and alumni return to Tallahassee for one of the most anticipated events of the HBCU calendar. FAMU’s Homecoming week traditionally serves as both a reunion and cultural celebration for thousands of supporters, drawing widespread attention from media and visitors each year.

The decision to cancel has sparked discussion online about the timing and nature of outside political groups hosting events during HBCU Homecoming season — a time typically centered on unity, tradition, and school pride.

While no new date has been confirmed, BLEXIT representatives indicated that the organization still intends to visit Florida A&M University at a later time as part of its ongoing campus tour.

When Nike unveiled the Yardrunners 6.0 Air Max ’95 collection, the sneakers immediately turned heads. But the real power of this campaign isn’t just in the design. It’s in the people. This year’s chapter in the Yardrunners story continues a full-circle tradition of HBCU alumni using their platforms to spotlight the next generation of trailblazers, creators, and leaders from their own community.

Alumni Building Alumni

The Yardrunners program began with a simple yet radical idea from two Howard University graduates, Richard Palmer and Arinze Emeagwali. They met on campus and bonded over their love of sneakers long before joining the Swoosh.

Years later, after each had built careers in marketing — Palmer with Jordan Brand and later Nike HQ, Emeagwali with Nike NYC — they reconnected to reshape how Nike engaged HBCUs.

In 2020, they pitched a concept that reimagined Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” message as “You Can’t Stop HBCUs.” Their goal was clear: to honor the people who make HBCUs thrive through authentic storytelling and design. From that idea came Yardrunners, a campaign that now serves as Nike’s bridge to the HBCU community.

Culture Carried Forward

That founding vision still guides the work today. Two HBCU alumni now lead the Yardrunners initiative within Nike. They collaborate with Black-led creative agencies such as League Twenty Two to ensure each release reflects the community’s authentic voice.

The imagery, language, and style now stretch far beyond product drops. Nike’s social channels, billboards, and editorial platforms feature real HBCU faces and stories. According to VIBE.com, the campaign’s purpose remains consistent — to elevate HBCU students and alumni through storytelling, products, and genuine collaboration.

HBCUs as the Heartbeat

This year’s Air Max ’95 Yardrunners 6.0 campaign spotlights four iconic institutions — Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University — and the people who represent their legacy.

At Florida A&M, Yardrunners captures the energy of Rattler Nation. Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching “100,” continues the school’s musical tradition.

At Spelman College, the Air Max 95 silhouette mirrors the grace and strength that define one of America’s most storied women’s colleges.

The campaign highlights Dr. Joyce Finch Johnson, Professor Emerita of Music and College Organist since 1955, whose presence has shaped the Spelman soundtrack for generations.

Eboni Ellis, founder of the Women in Hip Hop Collective, channels Spelman’s legacy of creative leadership, while Olivia Brown, flag-football captain, and Kamora Freeland, one of the youngest African American female pilots in U.S. history — and New York’s youngest licensed Black female pilot at 17 — represent how Spelman continues to open doors for the next generation of changemakers.

Legacy as a Loop

Each of these individuals carries forward what Yardrunners represents — HBCU excellence in motion. And each new campaign expands that circle.

From 2021’s HBCU dance showcase featuring Texas Southern alum Megan Thee Stallion, to 2023’s Morehouse Nike Terminator collaboration with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, to 2024’s “Started on the Yard” campaign narrated by Stephen A. Smith, Yardrunners has centered alumni who lift others as they climb.

That lineage continues with Yardrunners 6.0, which joins Nike’s growing collection of HBCU-driven releases. “When current students look back, they’ll be able to say Yardrunners was part of their HBCU experience,” said Palmer. “That means the world to us.”

Culture by the Culture

Yardrunners 6.0 isn’t a typical marketing campaign. It’s an ecosystem of alumni using creative power to spotlight others walking the same halls they once did.

From Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton to the brick yards of HBCU campuses, it shows that authenticity isn’t a trend — it’s the foundation of legacy.

Available October 11 at select retailers and on the SNKRS app October 14, Yardrunners 6.0 is more than a product drop. It’s a story of HBCU pride told by the people who live it.

Or else.

]]>
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University (FAMU), the nation’s top public HBCU, could soon have a roadway renamed in honor of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. A new proposal in the Florida legislature, House Bill 113, would require several state universities and colleges — including FAMU — to redesignate local streets with Kirk’s name.

According to WKMG in Orlando, the bill was filed by State Representative Kevin Steele, who has been outspoken following Charlie Kirk’s assassination last month. The legislation directs university boards to rename designated roadways after Charlie Kirk or risk losing state funding. For FAMU, the bill identifies W. Osceola Street in Tallahassee to be renamed Charlie James Kirk Street.

If approved, the mandate would take effect immediately, giving the state’s lone public HBCU and other state institutions 90 days to comply. Supporters of the bill argue that it will serve as a lasting tribute to Charlie Kirk, whose death on a college campus in September drew national attention.

This is not the first effort to memorialize the conservative figure in Florida. Last month, Lake County unanimously approved the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway, while New College of Florida announced plans to commission a statue in his likeness.

The proposal has stirred discussion across higher education circles, especially at HBCUs such as FAMU, where debates about political influence and cultural representation continue to shape campus identity. If passed, the legislation would not only rename a prominent street near FAMU but also mark another symbolic step in Florida’s broader push to memorialize the fallen podcaster statewide.

House Bill 113 now awaits committee review before advancing to the full legislature for consideration.

The fallout from the failed Georgia Football Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta continues, as questions mount from HBCU football fans over ticket refunds and accountability from the event’s organizers.

On Sept. 30, social media began circulating screenshots of a concerning message allegedly tied to the event. While its authenticity could not be confirmed at first, the same message appeared multiple times. By Oct. 1, the notice was found posted on the official website, GeorgiaFootballClassic.com.

The Statement

“This event is no longer taking place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer. It should appear on your account within 14–21 days. Please note: If the tickets were transferred to you. The refund will go to the fan who originally purchased the tickets from Ticketmaster.”

HBCU Georgia Football Classic Mercedes-Benz Stadium Atlanta

That third line — noting that funds had already been transferred to the organizers — has fueled growing unease among fans. Given the organizers’ troubled track record over the summer, many ticket holders have expressed doubts about when, or if, their money will be returned. Social media has since been flooded with frustration, regret, and anger over the lack of transparency and communication.

How We Got Here

The Georgia Football Classic was originally billed as an HBCU showcase matchup between the Florida A&M Rattlers and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, with both marching bands set to perform inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But on Sept. 30, organizers abruptly announced the game’s removal from the venue and scrambled to identify possible alternatives. Morehouse College, Kennesaw State, and Clark Atlanta University, all located in Atlanta, were floated as potential hosts.

Ultimately, FAMU and MVSU officials ended the speculation with a joint announcement: the game would not be salvaged in Atlanta. Instead, it would return to its original location in Itta Bena, Mississippi — rescheduled for Nov. 29, just four days before the original Atlanta date.

The collapse left fans reeling, with many already locked into hotel deposits, Airbnbs, flights, and rental car reservations. FAMU National Alumni Association President Artisha Polk issued a letter to alumni assuring them that the Omni Hotel would cancel all reservations without penalty in light of the cancellation. Unfortunately, many others were not as fortunate, absorbing losses tied to their travel plans.

What was once pitched as a premier HBCU football showcase has instead become a case study in disorganization and disappointment, leaving thousands of loyal fans demanding answers — and their refunds.

Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) longtime band announcer has issued a public apology after making remarks about Alabama State University’s plus-sized HBCU dance team, the Honey Beez. The comments triggered widespread criticism during Saturday’s football game in Tallahassee.

Joe Bullard, the veteran public address announcer for the Marching “100,” released a statement Sunday. He acknowledged the harm caused by his words.

“My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful,” Bullard said. “For that, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt apologies: first and foremost to the ASU Honey Beez, to Alabama State University, to the Alabama State University Marching Band, to Florida A&M University, and to the fans and supporters of both institutions who were in attendance, or anyone else who heard my words. To anyone who was offended, I am truly sorry.”

Bullard made the remarks during halftime of Alabama State’s game at FAMU. Shortly afterward, clips of the moment spread quickly online. Alumni, fans, and HBCU supporters criticized the language and called it disrespectful toward a team that has earned national recognition for its talent and cultural impact.

Florida A&M President: “We Must Do Better”

FAMU President Marva Johnson responded to the controversy with a detailed statement on Sunday evening. She described Bullard’s words as “inappropriate and offensive” and emphasized that they did not reflect the values of the university or its storied band program.

“As an institution, we take great pride in the Marching ‘100’ and the atmosphere our band creates on game day,” Johnson said. “But with that pride comes responsibility. The language used during halftime fell short of our standards. We must do better to ensure that every performer on the field is treated with the respect they deserve.”

Johnson directly apologized to Alabama State University, the Honey Beez, and their supporters. Furthermore, she highlighted the group’s excellence within HBCU culture.

“The Honey Beez are exemplars of discipline, school pride, and artistry,” she said. “Their performances inspire audiences across the country. That should never be diminished by careless remarks, no matter the intent.”

In addition, Johnson announced that the university will review its internal protocols for public announcements at athletic events. She explained that FAMU plans to use this moment to reinforce respect and accountability within the game-day experience.

Alabama State President: “Their Light Cannot Be Dimmed”

Alabama State University President Quinton Ross addressed the Honey Beez directly, offering both praise and support in the aftermath of the controversy. He underscored their role as cultural ambassadors and their impact on fans nationwide.

“Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy that you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU,” Ross said. “Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”

Ross also emphasized the broader significance of the moment for HBCUs.

“Within HBCU culture, our bands and dance teams are more than entertainment—they are institutions,” he said. “When someone disrespects that tradition, they don’t just hurt a single group. They undermine something that generations have built. The Honey Beez reflect courage, creativity, and excellence. We stand firmly with them.”

A Legacy Bigger Than the Moment

The Honey Beez, founded in 2004, have become a celebrated part of Alabama State’s band program. The group actively challenges stereotypes and expands representation for plus-sized dancers in HBCU band culture. Their high-energy performances have reached national audiences through halftime shows, television appearances, and viral clips.

Moreover, their continued presence speaks to a larger cultural legacy. For many fans, they symbolize both tradition and progress inside HBCU spaces. Saturday’s incident reignited conversations about how public figures influence narratives around these performers and the respect they deserve.

The post Failed HBCU Classic Matchup in Atlanta gets new date and venue appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
As first reported by HBCU Gameday on August 12, the uncertainty surrounding the Georgia Football Classic has finally ended. The much-anticipated matchup between Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Mississippi Valley State University will no longer take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Organizers officially scrapped the Atlanta game on September 29. Now, the contest has a new date and a new location.

Early signs of trouble

The Georgia Football Classic aimed to revive the energy of the Atlanta Football Classic (AFC), a major HBCU Classic from 1989 to 2014. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta staged the AFC at the old Georgia Dome, drawing huge crowds and making it a staple of the HBCU football calendar. FAMU’s strong Atlanta fan base, paired with opponents like Southern University and Tennessee State, turned the game into a fall spectacle.

The 2003 FAMU–TSU matchup drew 70,185 fans. In 2002 and 2004, the event drew 67,000 fans annually, with attendance figures rivaling some bowl games.

In August, John Grant, ESPN Director of Special Events and former AFC organizer, explained to HBCU Gameday that the landscape has changed. Grant, who now leads the MEAC–SWAC Challenge and Celebration Bowl, called reviving a large-scale Atlanta HBCU classic “monumental, if not impossible.” He pointed to marketing and logistical challenges that didn’t exist during the AFC’s peak.

Announcement and silence

Momentum built when FAMU Athletic Director Angela Suggs announced during the alumni association meeting that the 2025 game would move from Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. MVSU Athletics followed with a statement:

“Mississippi Valley State University Athletics is proud to announce that our 2025 football clash with FAMU, originally scheduled to be played at Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, will now take place at Atlanta’s iconic Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, October 4, 2025.”

After that announcement, communication stalled. With less than 60 days before kickoff, there were no advertisements, no tickets on sale through Ticketmaster, FAMU, or MVSU, and no public event details.

When HBCU Gameday pressed for answers, one promoter demanded a retraction. The reporting team held its ground, pointing out that the event was “in limbo” without ticket availability. We also pledged to follow up when official details surfaced.

Déjà vu in Tampa

Meanwhile, a similar situation unfolded in Tampa. The proposed Tampa Football Classic, featuring Bethune–Cookman and Southern, was slated for October 20. B-CU Athletic Director Reggie Theus eventually withdrew the program after organizers missed key deadlines. He stressed that he wouldn’t compromise the fan or student-athlete experience without proper infrastructure.

New plan: back to MVSU

The game now has a new plan. It will return to Mississippi Valley State’s home field, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. The later date provides both programs with a clear path forward after weeks of uncertainty.

FAMU issues joint statement

FAMU and MVSU released a joint statement to clarify the new arrangement:

“The SWAC contest on October 4, 2025, a MVSU home game, will not be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. As Mississippi Valley State is the designated home team, the decision has been made to cancel the game in Atlanta and reschedule to Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, Mississippi, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2 p.m.

We regret the impact that this unexpected change will have on our fans, and we will make every effort to provide a quality game-day experience during the rescheduled date of competition. … MVSU and FAMU remain committed to excellence on and off the field … Information regarding tickets will be forthcoming on each school’s respective athletics websites.”

HBCU Atlanta FAMU Mississippi Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The statement frames the move as a redirection, not a cancellation. It reaffirms both universities’ commitment to delivering a legitimate HBCU matchup and promises further ticket information soon.

The Big Picture

This pivot highlights a larger reality: grand venue ambitions create excitement, but sustainability matters more. The Georgia Classic’s collapse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a cautionary tale. The marketing resources and logistical capacity needed to support an HBCU classic of that scale are harder to pull off today than they were in the early 2000s.

Still, the game lives on—back on familiar ground and firmer footing. The matchup will now be played on November 29 at 2 p.m. in Itta Bena, Mississippi, giving fans a new date to circle on their calendars.

Multiple sources have told HBCU Gameday that the Georgia Football Classic between Mississippi Valley State and FAMU will not be played at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game, set for October 4, was supposed to serve as one of the fall’s marquee HBCU football events. Instead, confusion now surrounds the matchup between FAMU and Mississippi Valley State, from the location to tickets and logistics.

Early Announcements Spark Excitement

FAMU athletic director Angela Suggs announced earlier this year that Mississippi Valley State planned to move its home game to the home of the Atlanta Falcons. In August, Mississippi Valley State reinforced that message on its athletics website. The school stated that the 2025 clash with FAMU would move from Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The release described the event as part of the Georgia Football Classic and promised fans a showcase of HBCU tradition.

HBCU Gameday questions venue

Since the announcement, doubts have grown. HBCU Gameday’s Vaughn R. Wilson called the MVSU ticket office and was told that details were still “forthcoming” less than two months before kickoff. FAMU’s athletics staff redirected fans back to Mississippi Valley State, emphasizing that the Delta Devils held responsibility for the game as a home SWAC contest.

Promoters followed up with a press release to keep momentum alive. Dan Anderson, founder of the Georgia Football Classic, promised a unique atmosphere. He also highlighted the launch of Band VERZUZ Band, a new marching band competition tied to the event.

Where Things Stand Now

The October 4 matchup between Mississippi Valley State and FAMU is still listed, but the venue remains unsettled. The official ticket website continues to display pre-sale options, adding to the uncertainty. HBCU Gameday has contacted Mississippi Valley State University for further clarity and is waiting for a response. Sources indicate the game could still be played in Atlanta, but it will NOT happen at the NFL stadium.

If Mercedes-Benz Stadium does not host the game, Mississippi Valley State may return the contest to Itta Bena. Either way, the Delta Devils and FAMU Rattlers are scheduled to meet in a key SWAC showdown. Until final confirmation arrives, however, one of the fall’s most anticipated HBCU football matchups remains in limbo.

Florida A&M enters the game with a 1-3 record, while Mississippi Valley State continues its search for its first win.

It looks like it is ready.

One of the simmering rivalries of HBCU football appears to have finally arrived. When Florida A&M (FAMU) University left the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) to join the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), the move reignited old flames while setting the stage for new rivalries. Geography was the main driver—SWAC schools are concentrated across the South, while MEAC members are spread farther north along the East Coast.

Many assume FAMU’s closest rival is Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach. But Montgomery, Alabama, home to Alabama State, is actually 43 miles closer. The shorter trip makes it easy for fans of both schools to travel without the expense of overnight stays. What once were occasional non-conference matchups have now become meaningful showdowns in the SWAC’s Eastern Division. The two schools battled regularly back in the day when both teams were members of the SIAC.

That’s why Alabama State’s emphatic 42–14 victory over the Rattlers was more than just another win. For head coach Eddie Robinson, Jr., it was a milestone.

“We haven’t beat them since they’ve been in the SWAC,” Robinson said to HBCU Gameday after the game. “It’s been some decades, so it was good. The guys worked hard, they deserved it. It was a big win for us. Like I was telling you before, it’s a rivalry, but it’s not a rivalry until Alabama State wins a couple. So now I think we have a rivalry.”

Alabama State fans packed into Bragg Stadium for the SWAC showdown

Crowds and Culture Fuel the Rivalry

Since FAMU entered the SWAC, attendance at these games has been outstanding. Last year, when the Hornets hosted the Rattlers for homecoming, the matchup drew a record-setting 33,576 fans—the largest crowd in ASU Stadium history. The proximity not only boosts attendance, but also allows both schools’ famed marching bands to travel easily. In an era of tight budgets for HBCU bands, the short road trips help keep the pageantry alive.

Despite the teams being on opposite ends of the standings—Alabama State rising to the top of the conference while FAMU struggles near the bottom—the rivalry remains strong and deeply rooted in history.

Robinson is already anticipating the next installment.

“They’ll be coming back to us next year and we’ll do it all over again,” he said with a smile.

Eyes on the SWAC Race

Beyond the rivalry, Alabama State’s focus is squarely on finishing the season strong. The Hornets currently share the top spot in the SWAC with Jackson State, who rolled past Southern University in Baton Rouge, 38–13. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman shocked the league with a 41–34 upset of Alabama A&M in Daytona Beach, creating a three-way tie atop the Eastern Division.

Robinson knows the grind isn’t letting up. “We’ve got to stay healthy,” he said. “I think every week you look at the teams in the conference, man, we play Bethune-Cookman, they’re coming to us next week for our homecoming, so we’ll have a lot of distractions going on. We’ve got to get reset and refocus every week. I think every team in the conference can beat you. It’s a great time to be in the SWAC, great time to coach. I’m just so proud to have this opportunity, but we know, for us, we have to get over this one and get back to work.”

The HBCU community is reacting to a halftime controversy from Saturday’s football game between Alabama State University and FAMU. Inside Bragg Memorial Stadium, Alabama State’s Honey Beez — the well-known plus-sized dance team that performs with the Mighty Marching Hornets — became the target of an offensive remark.

As the Honey Beez left the field after their performance, Florida A&M band announcer Joe Bullard called them “the new face of Ozempic.” The crowd reacted with shock and disgust. Soon after, the incident spread on social media and quickly ignited outrage across the HBCU landscape.

Alabama State President Quinton T. Ross Condemns Remarks

Alabama State University President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. issued a forceful statement. He described the announcer’s words as “short-sighted” and “demeaning.” Ross stressed that competition cannot come at the expense of student dignity.

“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” Ross wrote. He also spoke directly with FAMU’s president and with the Southwestern Athletic Conference commissioner. Both leaders agreed with his position.

Ross praised the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets for their dedication. He explained that they spend countless hours preparing “unforgettable” and “show-stopping” shows that display Alabama State pride. Speaking directly to the Honey Beez, Ross added: “Please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU.”

FAMU President Marva Johnson Issues Apology

Shortly after Ross’s statement, Florida A&M University President Marva Johnson released her own response. She apologized to Alabama State, the HoneyBeez, and the entire Hornet Nation.

Johnson called the remark “inappropriate and offensive.” She stressed that it does not represent FAMU’s values or its respect for other HBCUs. “On behalf of Florida A&M University, I extend my deepest and sincerest apologies to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Quinton Ross, and the entire Alabama State University community,” she wrote.

Johnson also praised the Honey Beez, calling them a team that “represents discipline, school pride, and performance tradition respected across the nation.” She confirmed that she had spoken with Ross to share her regret. In addition, she pledged that Florida A&M will take “immediate steps to ensure accountability within our organization and to prevent incidents like this in the future.”

A Teachable Moment in HBCU Rivalry

This controversy highlights the tension that comes with historic HBCU rivalries. Alabama State and FAMU are two of the most celebrated programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Their matchups bring fierce competition on the field and high-profile battles at halftime.

However, as both presidents stressed, artistry deserves respect. The Honey Beez in particular stand as a symbol of inclusion and body positivity. They have performed on national stages and inspired audiences through creativity and confidence. Their presence shows the diversity of Black excellence that HBCUs are known to uplift.

Meanwhile, FAMU’s Marching 100 remains one of the most iconic bands in the HBCU tradition. Johnson’s statement reinforced that excellence must always come with integrity.

Moving Forward

By responding quickly, both Ross and Johnson set a tone of accountability and respect. Ross defended his students’ dignity and brilliance. Johnson admitted fault on behalf of her institution and pledged corrective action.

Together, their leadership turned a painful moment into a teachable one. HBCU rivalries may be fierce, but dignity and respect must guide every competition. The Honey Beez will continue to shine, and the HBCU community will watch closely to ensure moments like this do not repeat.

Alabama State opened its SWAC slate with authority on Saturday. The Hornets steamrolled Florida A&M University (FAMU) 42–14 on the road. They leaned on a relentless run game, efficient passing, and a disciplined defense to earn their first win at FAMU in four years. The message was clear: Alabama State is ready to compete at the top of HBCU football.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

“This is big,” Alabama State’s head coach said postgame. “For us, we want to make this somewhat of a rivalry. But it’s not a rivalry when we keep losing. They’ve been around Tallahassee riding on our bicycle. So we finally came back to take it back.”

Ground Game Sets the Tone

Alabama State controlled the trenches from the start. The Hornets piled up 299 rushing yards on 42 carries, averaging an eye-popping 7.1 yards per attempt. Jamarie Hostzclaw carried the ball 22 times for 135 yards. Jahbari Kuykendall, Marcus Harris II, and JR Gardner combined for four rushing touchdowns.

The Hornets scored in every quarter. Their biggest surge came after halftime, when they stacked back-to-back 14-point frames in the third and fourth. Quarterback Andrew Body complemented the ground attack with 10 completions on 18 attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Jones hauled in both of those scores.

Rattlers Struggle to Respond

Florida A&M fell behind early and never recovered. Quarterback RJ Johnson III completed 20 of 33 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. However, his offense struggled to move the chains against a swarming Alabama State defense. Running back Thad Franklin Jr. provided one bright spot with 75 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Even with Franklin’s effort, the Rattlers could not sustain momentum. They finished with 309 total yards on 63 plays — only 4.9 yards per snap. On third down, FAMU converted just five of twelve attempts.

Alabama State’s Defense Clamps Down

The Hornets’ defense matched their offense’s intensity. Alabama State stopped FAMU on four of five fourth-down tries and limited explosive plays. Linebackers Jalil Lenore, Cameron Gordon, and Rhoody Jean-Louis each recorded five tackles. Their pressure forced the Rattlers to play a short passing game, which further stifled the offense.

A Rivalry Reignited

The win snapped Alabama State’s drought in Tallahassee and reignited an HBCU matchup that many around the SWAC want to see become a true rivalry.

“It’s great to get one win. We wanted to go 1-0 in SWAC play,” the coach added. “We’ve got homecoming next week. Got to lock back in. We’re not focused on the big picture. We know we have to take it week by week.”

Alabama State didn’t just snap a losing streak in Tallahassee — it set the tone for the rest of the season. The Hornets showed power in the run game, discipline on defense, and a hunger that could keep them in the mix for the SWAC title. In the broader HBCU football picture, this was a statement win.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University (FAMU) athletics director Angela Suggs may avoid trial in her ongoing grand theft and fraud case after reaching an agreement with prosecutors.

Suggs, 55, was arrested in June following a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation that accused her of misusing a credit card from her former employer, the Florida Sports Foundation. Investigators allege she racked up nearly $24,000 in improper charges, some of which were repaid late or never reimbursed.

According to court records filed Thursday, the State Attorney’s Office approved a deferred prosecution agreement, enrolling Suggs in a pretrial intervention program. If she complies with the program’s conditions for two years, all charges will be dismissed.

The terms include mandatory gambling addiction courses and regular participation in treatment or support groups. Suggs is also barred from holding any position where she has access to employer funds or credit lines for personal benefit. Whether that restriction applies to her current role at FAMU remains unclear.

In addition, Suggs must pay $649.98 in restitution to the Florida Sports Foundation. Court documents note that while she did repay certain charges, others — including expenses marked as business meals that were later deemed personal — went unpaid. FDLE also reported that Suggs often claimed receipts were missing.

FAMU, one of the nation’s most prominent HBCUs, has not yet issued a statement on how the agreement may affect Suggs’ role overseeing athletics. The outcome of this case carries significant implications for FAMU as it continues to elevate its national athletic profile while navigating leadership questions at the top of its sports program.

Nike is once again shining a spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its latest Yardrunners project. This time, the Swoosh pulls up with a bold collection of Air Max ’95s dedicated to four iconic HBCU institutions.

A Yardrunners Tradition Expands

Since 2020, Nike has shown love to HBCUs through the Yardrunners program, which was created to celebrate the legacies of HBCU institutions and the people they serve with footwear designed by alumni. On its fifth anniversary, the program is marking the occasion with what sneakernews.com calls its “most ambitious release yet:” a full lineup of four Air Max ’95s, each paying tribute to a different HBCU.

For Holiday 2025, the Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack highlights Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida A&M University, and Norfolk State University. Each design pulls from school history, color palettes, and mascots—turning sneakers into wearable symbols of HBCU pride.

Earlier HBCU Releases by Nike

This new drop follows several high-profile collaborations. For example, Clark Atlanta University received its own Nike Dunk colorway in 2022. Howard University later showcased a Jordan Brand Air Jordan 4 Player Exclusive, complete with custom “HU” lace dubraes and school crest.

In addition, the Yardrunners 3.0 collection featured Dunk colorways and apparel timed with HBCU homecomings. The Terminator High HBCU Pack arrived in 2023, while Virginia Union University debuted an Air Force 1 release in 2024.

Details Behind the Drop

Morehouse pairs tiger-inspired red and black stripes with bold accents.
FAMU takes on green reptilian textures, a clear nod to the Rattler.
Spelman celebrates the jaguar with spotted dark and light blue suede.
Norfolk State opts for understated yellow hairy suede, representing Mr. Spartan.

Every sneaker comes dressed with school letter logos and founding years on the tongues, custom insoles with full school names, and even graphic treatments on the visible Air cushioning that mirror each pair’s overlay patterns—with Norfolk State being the lone exception. These extra design elements push the drop into collectors’ territory, blending heritage with modern sneaker aesthetics.

When and Where to Cop

The Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack will be available during the Holiday 2025 season through Nike.com and select retailers. The retail price will be $190 per pair.

For over twenty years, Quinn Gray held the FAMU record for the most passing yards in FAMU history. In 2020, he was inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for his amazing career as a quarterback under Black College Football Hall of Fame coach Billy Joe. Saturday, Quinn Gray returned to Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium as head coach of the surging Albany State Golden Rams of the SIAC.

Return of a Rattler

The previously undefeated Golden Rams were looking to play spoiler for the Rattlers’ home opener. ASU would come out firing behind the arm of veteran quarterback Isaiah Knowles. The Golden Rams took a 14-3 lead on FAMU in a packed stadium.

Coach James Colzie III steadied his Rattlers, who ended up winning 33-28, avoiding the upset from the team picked in the preseason to be the SIAC champions. The Rattlers posted over 450 yards of offense in the win.

FAMU starting quarterback RJ Johnson led the Rattlers with 270 yards passing. In the first half, when the Rattlers were stagnant on offense, Jett Peddy came in to relieve him and was moving the Rattler offense. However, in the second half, Johnson would come out on fire and lead scoring drives for the Rattlers to take the lead. Johnson completed 17-of-22 passes, with at least three dropped balls by his wide receivers.

New LED Lights

FAMU unveiled its new LED light system, keeping in line with college football stadiums nationwide. The rowdy crowd, including a few thousand Albany State fans, their band, royal court, and cheerleaders, went wild in the third quarter as FAMU unveiled its Homecoming Concert Lineup. The lineup includes Gherbo, PartyNextDoor, Bossman DLow, Boosie, and Latto. This lineup will keep FAMU’s Lawson Center rocking during homecoming week.

FAMU Quinn Gray Albany State

The Rattlers will enjoy an off week to prepare for a run for the rest of the season, starting with Alabama State on Sept. 27. The Golden Rams will get back to work on Sept. 27, as they host Allen University at the Albany State Coliseum.

]]>
After more than three decades, Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Florida State University will once again face off on the basketball court. FSU announced today that it will host the Rattlers on October 26, in an exhibition game, marking the first meeting between the two programs since a fiery contest in December 1991.

A Rivalry Stopped in Its Tracks

The last matchup between the Rattlers and Seminoles ended abruptly when a heated altercation between the teams escalated into a full-scale melee. At the center of the fray were both squads’ marquee players—Doug Edwards for Florida State and Reginald Finney for FAMU. What began as an on-court disagreement spilled into the stands, where even fans became involved. The incident between two schools literally separated by train tracks, brought an abrupt end to the series.

The game itself had been arranged by then-State Representative Al Lawson Jr., a standout Rattler basketball player in the 1960s. Lawson later served as an assistant coach at FSU during its historic 1972 Final Four run, before a loss to John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty. Ironically, FAMU’s 9,000-seat arena now bears Lawson’s name, making his legacy a symbolic bridge between the two programs.

Florida State star to return to alma mater

The timing of this renewal carries added significance with Charlie Ward stepping in as FAMU’s new head coach. Ward, a Tallahassee native with deep family ties to FAMU, was a two-sport star at FSU. He quarterbacked Bobby Bowden’s 1993 national championship team, won the Heisman Trophy, and was also a four-year letterman in basketball.

Though undrafted by the NFL, Ward was selected in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks, where he enjoyed a decade-long career before finishing with stints at Houston and San Antonio. After retiring, Ward turned to coaching, guiding Florida State University School (K-12) to a 2022 state basketball championship and another state final appearance. His name was even floated as a potential successor to longtime FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton upon his retirement.

Ward also has a personal connection to the rivalry’s stormy past. He was a member of the 1991 Seminoles team involved in the brawl that halted the series. Now, more than 30 years later, his steady presence is viewed as a unifying factor in helping restart the long-dormant matchup.

Looking Ahead

With Ward leading FAMU and Luke Loucks recently appointed as FSU’s head coach, both sides see this as the right moment to restore the cross-town rivalry. For the city of Tallahassee, the game represents not just a renewal of competition, but also an opportunity to mend history and showcase the region’s rich basketball tradition.

The 2025 U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y., transformed into a celebration of history, culture, and legacy as the tournament honored one of the sport’s greatest pioneers — Althea Gibson, a proud HBCU alum who shattered tennis’s color barrier in 1950. Gibson went on to win championships in every Grand Slam tournament, and this year’s U.S. Open marked the 75th anniversary of her groundbreaking achievement with a full slate of tributes highlighting her alma mater, Florida A&M University (FAMU), and its marching band, the Marching 100.

Honoring a Trailblazer

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) committed itself to making the tribute a royal affair. Since 2020, the U.S. Open has incorporated HBCU Live — a showcase of historically Black colleges and universities — and Gibson’s milestone provided the perfect backdrop for a spotlight on FAMU.

On Friday, Aug. 22, the celebration began with the Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. — Gibson’s own sorority — performing in a special event hosted by Rashan Ali, with DJ Radio Champ providing the soundtrack. FAMU’s Women’s Tennis team, led by Head Coach Rochelle “Nikki” Houston, was also featured, linking Gibson’s legacy to today’s student-athletes.

The Marching “100” Takes Center Stage

The spotlight shined brightest on Aug. 27, when FAMU’s world-renowned Marching “100,” the reigning ESPN Band of the Year, electrified the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. More than 100,000 fans entering the complex that day were greeted with five high-energy mini-performances strategically timed to coincide with peak entry periods.

Later that evening, the Marching “100,” alongside the FAMU cheerleaders, stormed center court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Under the direction of Dr. Shelby Chipman and led by head drum major Oluwamodupe Oloyede, the contingent of 30 musicians delivered a dazzling performance that brought fans to their feet. President Marva Johnson, representing FAMU with pride, joined them on court, further cementing the presence of the HBCU at one of tennis’ grandest stages.

The performance drew loud ovations as fans clamored for the best vantage points. FAMU alumni in attendance swelled with pride, capturing the moment in photos with band members.

Culture at Every Corner

The infusion of FAMU culture extended well beyond the stadium floor. Throughout the day, celebrated FAMU DJs — including DJ Bo Weezy, DJ Nyla, DJ Toure, and DJ R-tistic — kept energy high in the Arthur Ashe Garden, while DJ Fly Guy commanded the sound inside the main arena.

The festivities culminated that evening with President Johnson and Drum Major Oloyede presiding over the ceremonial coin toss for the second-round match between Mattia Bellucci and No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz. Johnson’s toss favored Bellucci, but Alcaraz ultimately dominated the match in straight sets.

Gibson’s Spirit Everywhere

Tributes to Althea Gibson were inescapable. From towering posters and marquee displays to kiosks and keepsakes, her image and story were woven into every corner of the U.S. Open. The tournament’s official logo — an artistic blend of Gibson’s profile with center court at Arthur Ashe Stadium — adorned souvenirs ranging from mugs to posters.

In the Arthur Ashe Garden, visitors explored educational displays celebrating both HBCUs and Gibson’s decorated tennis career, ensuring that her trailblazing legacy resonated with fans young and old.

A Celebration Fit for a Legend

The 2025 U.S. Open was more than a tennis tournament; it was a tribute to HBCU culture. With the Marching “100,” FAMU cheerleaders, DJs, athletes, and leadership all present, the event underscored Althea Gibson’s enduring impact on tennis, HBCUs, and American history.

Florida A&M (FAMU) finally has its quarterback. Head coach James Colzie III confirmed what Rattler Nation has been waiting to hear—RJ Johnson III will start under center in one of HBCU footall’s biggest games, the Orange Blossom Classic, against Howard on August 30. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, and the game will air nationally on ESPNU.

This won’t just be any debut. For Johnson, it’s a chance to reintroduce himself to the college football world on one of HBCU football’s biggest stages.

From Toledo’s Sideline to FAMU’s Spotlight

Johnson, a redshirt sophomore, transferred to Tallahassee after two quiet seasons at Toledo. He didn’t play a snap for the Rockets, buried on the depth chart while trying to find his footing at the FBS level. But Colzie made it clear during camp: Johnson’s fresh start with the Rattlers wasn’t about the past; it was about the potential.

In a heated battle with Jett Peddy, Traven Green, Tyler Jefferson, and Bryson Martin, Johnson emerged as the guy to lead the Rattlers’ offense into 2025. His combination of size (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), arm talent, and leadership sealed the deal. Now, after two years of waiting, he finally has the keys.

Atlanta-Bred Playmaker

If his high school résumé is any indication, Johnson is more than ready for the moment. At Westlake High School in Atlanta, he was a three-star prospect with a reputation for torching defenses. He completed 574 passes on 869 attempts—an impressive 66 percent—for 9,042 yards and 79 touchdowns across four seasons. He added nearly 700 rushing yards and 13 scores on the ground, proving he wasn’t just a pocket passer.

The accolades stacked up quickly: first-team all-state as a senior, MaxPreps All-American as a sophomore, and two-time Westlake Offensive Player of the Year. By the time he graduated in 2023, Johnson had cemented himself as one of Georgia’s most decorated prep quarterbacks.

HBCU FAMU RJ Johnson III Orange Blossom Classic
Big Shoes, Bigger Stage

Johnson steps into a lineage of standout FAMU quarterbacks. Jeremy Moussa guided the Rattlers to a Celebration Bowl win in 2023, and Daniel Richardson followed with an All-American season in 2024. Johnson isn’t just filling a vacancy—he’s stepping into a tradition.

The Orange Blossom Classic, with its history dating back to the 1930s, has always been about more than just football. It’s pageantry, rivalry, and culture all rolled into one. And with Howard lining up on the other side, this year’s matchup sets the stage for Johnson to prove he belongs in the conversation as one of the next great HBCU quarterbacks.

A Chance to Make His Name

For RJ Johnson III, Miami isn’t just about a season opener. It’s the chance to transform from a forgotten transfer into the face of an HBCU power. Against Howard, he’ll have a national audience, a rabid fan base, and the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

If he rises to the moment, this could be the start of something special—for him and for Florida A&M’s quest to reclaim the HBCU football crown.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) has produced countless trailblazers, but few figures stand taller in history than Althea Gibson. Born in Silver, South Carolina, in 1927, Gibson overcame the crushing weight of racial prejudice to forge a path that forever changed the world of sports. The 2025 U.S. Open will honor Gibson’s HBCU legacy, with her sorority and school taking center court.

Recruited to FAMU through her early tennis connections. Althea Gibson quickly distinguished herself on campus not only as a tennis star but also as a versatile athlete. She played golf and basketball and was known as one of the best pool players at the university. While excelling in athletics, she also pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Beta Alpha Chapter), where she was beloved by her peers.

HBCU Roots

After graduating from Tallahassee-HBCU, Gibson broke barriers on the global stage. In 1956, she became the first Black woman to win a Grand Slam tennis title at the French Open. The following year, she cemented her dominance by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, completing an extraordinary streak of four consecutive Grand Slam victories—an achievement still referred to as the “Althea Slam.” Her groundbreaking success paved the way for future generations of athletes, with legends like Billie Jean King continuing to champion her legacy.

Her accomplishments extended far beyond tennis. Gibson became the first Black woman to compete on the LPGA Tour, authored books, recorded music, and even appeared on screen alongside John Wayne. At the height of her popularity, she toured with the Harlem Globetrotters, thrilling audiences by showcasing her tennis skills on basketball courts.

The U.S. Open has long celebrated Gibson’s impact. In 2019, a statue in her honor was unveiled outside Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, a lasting tribute to her pioneering role in tennis.

Center Court Tribute

This year, the 2025 U.S. Open will once again spotlight her remarkable journey. During opening week on August 22, members of Gibson’s beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha (Beta Alpha Chapter), will perform as part of the ceremonies. That is hosted by another FAMU Alum, Rashad Ali, and FAMU Alum “DJ Radio Champ” will provide the soundtrack for the evening. Adding to the celebration, the renowned Florida A&M Marching “100” pep band will take center court on August 27. Bringing the spirit of her alma mater to one of tennis’ biggest stages.

Althea Gibson’s story is one of courage, versatility, and triumph. A legacy that continues to inspire not just FAMU but the entire world of sports.

Will it be Atlanta or Itta Bena?

The post HBCU Revenge Match at Mercedes Benz Stadium In Limbo appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
What began as heavy speculation became official on June 27. Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU) announced a major change to its 2025 HBCU football schedule, specifically the game against Florida A&M University (FAMU).

Following an impromptu announcement by FAMU AD Angela Suggs, the MVSU athletics website, the school confirmed the plan.

The news immediately created a buzz in the HBCU football community. With new athletic director Alecia Shields-Gadson taking the reins and head coach Terrell Buckley leading the Delta Devils, excitement around MVSU was at its highest in decades. That momentum was fueled by MVSU’s stunning November 16 victory over FAMU. A win that snapped the Rattlers’ 23-game home winning streak, the longest in FCS football at the time. It was the first victory over FAMU in school history.

Confusion Over Tickets and Event Details

However, when fans began calling the MVSU ticket office, they were met with uncertainty. A representative said details about the event were still “forthcoming.” Further questions revealed that the department had no knowledge of the specifics for the proposed Atlanta game.

A similar story came from Florida A&M’s athletics office. “The game is Mississippi Valley’s home SWAC contest. All information about the game must come from their office,” a staff member explained. This meant FAMU’s ticket office — which often sells away-game tickets for the convenience of Rattler fans — had no additional information either.

Venue Schedule Raises Doubts

Seeking confirmation from the venue, we contacted Mercedes-Benz Stadium directly. Their published events schedule for late 2025 through 2026 did not list the MVSU vs. FAMU game. The absence of the matchup from one of the nation’s premier football venues raises doubts about whether the event was truly confirmed, even though the Celebration Bowl isn’t listed either.

HBCU Culture Meets Event Promotion

Despite the uncertainty, Atlanta’s status as a hub for HBCU culture has already inspired local promoters to plan. Several well-known event organizers began advertising weekend festivities in anticipation of FAMU fans traveling to the city.

But with no official ticket information, venue confirmation, or updates from either school, the excitement for an Atlanta showdown is cooling. The most likely scenario is a return to the original location. Itta Bena, Mississippi, for the highly anticipated SWAC matchup between the Rattlers and the Delta Devils.

The post FAMU board offers mixed reviews of outgoing President appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Florida A&M University’s Board of Trustees has released its 2024–25 evaluation of outgoing Interim President Timothy Beard. The results show a sharply divided set of assessments. Some trustees praised Beard for stability, legislative wins, and research growth. Others criticized his leadership, accountability, and performance.

The evaluation, completed by ten named trustees and two anonymous respondents, gives a complex portrait of Beard’s year in charge.

Overview of the Survey

The evaluation ran from July 15 to July 29, 2025. Trustees rated Beard on four areas: annual goals, strategic and academic leadership, performance-based funding metrics, and major accomplishments. Ratings ranged from Poor to Superior. Open-ended comments provided more detail.

Several trustees credited Beard with guiding the university through a leadership transition and securing large funding commitments. However, others described his tenure as ineffective and even damaging.

High Marks for Stability, Funding, and Engagement

Trustees Belvin Perry Jr., Raphael Vazquez, Kristin Harper, Craig Reed, and Natlie Figgers gave Beard strong marks in several areas.

Legislative success was a recurring theme. Harper and Perry noted his relationships with lawmakers. Perry highlighted a $65.5 million legislative budget win.

Beard was praised for continuing the university’s strategic plan despite leadership changes.

In research and development, Beard exceeded the $60 million target, reaching $79.9 million. Vazquez called this a significant milestone toward R1 research status.

Graduation and retention also improved. Harper, Vazquez, and Reed credited him with helping FAMU achieve the highest four-year graduation rate in its history and improving second-year retention.

Harper and Perry also noted better trust, mutual respect, and accountability within the senior leadership team.

Low Marks for Fundraising and Accountability

Trustees Jamal Brown, Deveron Gibbons, Michael White, and one anonymous respondent gave consistently low ratings.

Fundraising drew sharp criticism. Gibbons accused Beard of making poor hiring decisions and lacking a clear strategy. White called for a more deliberate approach to advancement.

Declining licensure pass rates in Pharmacy and Physical Therapy were a concern. Gibbons claimed Beard took credit for successes he did not influence.

Several trustees accused the administration of disregarding faculty priorities, mishandling communication, and lacking structure. Gibbons went as far as calling it “the worst presidency” he had seen in over 20 years in Florida higher education. White raised concerns about financial oversight, saying accountability was “few and far between.”

Dr. Timothy Beard spending time with the FAMU Golf program.

Beard Responds to Criticism

In an interview with WTXL, Beard pushed back against the negative reviews.

“Those type of evaluation statements by no way define me. I don’t think they equate with what I’ve done at this institution.”

Beard also valued the support from Board Chair Kristin Harper.

“The board chair knows in and out what’s going on with the president more than anybody else. So that’s the main evaluation for me, that means a whole lot more.”

Preparing for the Transition

Beard handed over leadership to new President Marva Johnson at the beginning of August.. He told WTXL his focus is now on her success.

“My job is to make sure this president is more successful than I was. That’s my role now. So my advice to the FAMU community, the Board of Trustees, leadership team: let’s do all we can to make sure President Johnson is successful. Because guess what, if she is successful, FAMU is successful.”

A Split Verdict

Beard leaves behind both measurable gains and unresolved challenges. His supporters point to legislative wins, improved graduation rates, and research growth. His critics see poor fundraising, low accountability, and unmet goals.

The divided evaluation highlights the challenges facing Florida A&M’s leadership. As Marva Johnson takes over, the stakes remain high for the university’s next chapter.

Xavier Smith didn’t just show up for the Los Angeles Rams’ first preseason game of 2025—he stole the spotlight. The former HBCU standout out of Florida A&M University (FAMU) is fighting for what could be the sixth and final wide receiver spot on the NFL team’s 53-man roster. Smith caught all three of his targets for 55 yards, leading all Rams receivers on the night.

Smith’s performance wasn’t built on empty yards. Two of his grabs came in heavy traffic, including a 39-yard strike from quarterback Stetson Bennett that set up the Rams’ first touchdown, and a 15-yard chain-mover on third down. For a player also auditioning for punt return duties, it was the kind of night that keeps coaches rewinding the tape. Smith averaged 9.3 yards per punt return in 2024, and that versatility could prove pivotal in final roster decisions.

HBCU Roots

Before chasing an NFL dream, Smith carved out one of the most decorated careers in FAMU history. The walk-on-turned-star caught 193 passes for 2,599 yards and 22 touchdowns in his Rattlers career. His 2022 senior season—87 catches, 1,021 yards, and 11 touchdowns—earned him All-SWAC honors, HBCU All-American recognition, and MVP at the HBCU Legacy Bowl.

NFL Journey

Undrafted in 2023, Smith signed with the Rams and spent his rookie season on the practice squad before re-upping with a reserve/future contract. In 2024, he saw regular-season action, flashing his big-play ability with a 38-yard punt return in Week 3 that set up a game-winning field goal. Now, entering year three, his roster push has momentum.

HBCU NFL Xavier Smith Los Angeles Rams FAMU

For an HBCU product battling for a roster spot, a clean stat line—3-for-3 with impact catches and field-flipping returns—is exactly the kind of résumé booster coaches notice. The Rams have depth at receiver, but Smith’s ability to contribute in multiple phases could be the separator.

If the preseason opener is any indication, Xavier Smith isn’t just in the mix—he’s making it hard for the Los Angeles Rams to imagine their roster without him.

Florida A&M head coach Charlie Ward and his staff have scored one of the program’s biggest recruiting victories in recent memory. Jayden “JJ” Joseph, a four-star point guard in the Class of 2026, announced his commitment to the Rattlers on social media Saturday. The commitment marks not only a big win for FAMU but for the SWAC and HBCU basketball.

The Team Breakdown and Gillion Academy standout chose FAMU over multiple high-major programs, according to national reporter Jeff Goodman, who noted Joseph’s strong recruiting profile and offers from several power-conference schools.

“Sometimes you don’t have to tell the story, time will…” Joseph wrote in his commitment post, alongside a graphic of himself in a green and orange Rattlers uniform.

Who is Jayden Joseph?

 • Class: 2026
 • Position: Point Guard
 • Height/Weight: 6-2, 180 pounds (listed)
 • School: Gillion Academy (Orlando, FL)
 • AAU/Grassroots: Team Breakdown
 • Notable Offers/Interest: Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, UCF, USC, Oregon, among others

Joseph’s game is built on elite pace control, shifty ball-handling, and advanced pick-and-roll reads. He’s a proven playmaker who can score from all three levels and create high-quality looks for teammates.

Defensively, Joseph uses active hands and quick feet to apply pressure at the point of attack. His competitive edge and leadership qualities have drawn praise from scouts and coaches alike.

Why He Fits at Florida A&M

Joseph projects as an immediate offensive catalyst for FAMU once he arrives on campus in 2026. His ability to initiate offense, dictate tempo, and create off the dribble should elevate the Rattlers’ half-court execution.

In transition, Joseph thrives at pushing the pace and finding early scoring opportunities. Combined with his pull-up shooting and vision, he gives Coach Ward a versatile guard who can adapt to different lineups.

Building the Future

Joseph’s commitment signals Florida A&M’s growing ability to compete for top-tier talent under Ward’s leadership. The program’s recruiting momentum may continue, as the staff is also hosting Top 25 forward Chris Washington Jr. later this fall.

With Joseph’s pledge, FAMU locks in a cornerstone piece for its 2026 recruiting class—a guard who blends skill, IQ, and leadership.

The Road Ahead

Jayden Joseph is set to finish his high school career at West Oaks before joining the Rattlers in 2026. Between now and then, he’ll continue to sharpen his game on the prep and grassroots circuits, preparing to make an immediate impact in Tallahassee.

Both men, members of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Xi Chapter), were widely known for their leadership and popularity during their time at FAMU.

The crash occurred when a suspect fleeing from police in a black Ford F-150 slammed into their white Lexus sedan. The Lexus, which had the right-of-way at a four-way stop, was struck violently, resulting in a fiery collision that killed both passengers. KHOU-11 reported that the fleeing driver had already hit several vehicles before causing the fatal crash. The Houston Police Department is pursuing murder charges against him.

Sergeant Thomas Fendia of the Houston Police Department’s Vehicle Crimes Division said officers apprehended the driver, a Hispanic male, at the scene. Police also found a female passenger in the truck with injuries, though she does not face charges. Fendia noted that officers detected a strong odor of alcohol when they arrested the suspect and believe he was intoxicated during the incident.

Florida A&M community sends support through social media

The FAMU community has expressed deep sorrow following the devastating news. Social media is filled with heartfelt tributes and condolences, honoring the two young men for their ambition, energy, and campus contributions. One graduated in 2024 and the other in 2025; both had promising futures ahead before their lives were cut short by this senseless tragedy.

Friends, fraternity brothers, and fellow Rattlers continue to mourn the loss, feeling a profound void in the wake of this heartbreaking event.

Marva Brown Johnson, J.D., began her term as the 13th president of Florida A&M University on Saturday. Her first day in office coincided with the university’s Summer Commencement Ceremony.

Johnson addressed the Class of 2025 during the event. Her remarks focused on reflection, perseverance, and the university’s mission to serve future generations.

“Let me begin by congratulating the Summer Graduating Class of 2025,” Johnson said. “As you cross that stage, take it all in… your triumph reminds us why FAMU exists: to open doors, to transform lives, and to light the path for generations of dreamers and doers.”

She also recognized the contributions of Interim President Timothy Beard. She thanked him for what she described as leadership marked by calm, credibility, and care.

Johnson said she approaches her role with “an open mind, a full heart,” and a strong commitment to the university’s future. She stated that her focus will include honoring FAMU’s legacy while adapting to a changing higher education environment.

She referenced the university’s founding in 1887 by two professors and 15 students. Today, FAMU is recognized as a leading public HBCU. Johnson described that journey as a reflection of resilience and growth.

As president, she said she intends to listen, lead, and collaborate. She also expressed a goal of staying accessible and engaged with the campus community.

“My door will be open,” Johnson said. “You’ll find me on campus, in classrooms, at events, and in the heart of this vibrant community.”

Marva Johnson closed by encouraging graduates to carry the legacy of Florida A&M into the future. She described the university as a place that helps light the path forward.

The Charlie Ward era of Florida A&M basketball will officially begin on November 3, as FAMU open the 2025–26 season on the road against the University of South Florida at the Yuengling Center in Tampa.

FAMU made the announcement Monday via social media, highlighting sophomore guard Jordan Chatman in its promotional graphic. The season opener marks the first game for Coach Charlie Ward, the Heisman Trophy winner and Florida State legend who was named head coach earlier this year following Patrick Crarey’s departure to Grambling.

The Rattlers finished last season 13–16 overall and 10–8 in SWAC play, showing late-season growth and setting a foundation that Ward will now look to build upon. With returning talent and new energy at the helm, FAMU enters the season with cautious optimism and high expectations.

Their opponent, South Florida, had its fair share of struggles last season. The Bulls finished 13-19 last year and are looking to improve in the American Conference. Facing USF on opening night gives the Rattlers a high-profile challenge to test chemistry and grit from the jump.

This in-state matchup also fits a growing trend among HBCUs: scheduling early-season games against well-known regional programs. FAMU and USF last met in 2018, when the Bulls walked away with a 69-59 win. FAMU hasn’t defeated USF in basketball since 1980, when FAMU won 65-63.

Now, with fresh leadership and renewed purpose, FAMU returns to Tampa seeking not only a season-opening win—but a statement to begin a new chapter.

New Florida A&M men’s basketball coach Charlie Ward is wasting no time making waves on the HBCU recruiting trail. Ward and his staff are going head-to-head with elite programs as they build his first Rattlers roster.

On Monday, July 21, Christopher Washington Jr., the No. 1 basketball prospect in Tennessee, included FAMU in his top seven college choices. The four-star forward also named Alabama, Auburn, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Villanova—all powerhouse programs known for high-level competition.

In an interview with On3’s Jamie Shaw, Washington explained what he’s looking for in a college:
“I want to go somewhere that feels like a family. And I want to play early, so I want to go somewhere I’ll play right away. How they play will be big for me. I like playing fast and playing on the wing. Location won’t matter to me as long as it feels like family there.”

Washington, a 6-foot-7, 175-pound small forward, plays for Providence Christian Academy in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is rated the No. 13 small forward nationally and 31st overall by 247Sports.

HBCU hire Charlie Ward making FAMU a player in recruiting

Originally from Gainesville, Florida, Washington began his high school career at The Villages Charter School before transferring to Providence as a junior. His inclusion of an HBCU in a list packed with Power Five programs signals growing respect for what Coach Ward is building at FAMU.

Ward was officially named Florida A&M men’s basketball head coach on April?16,?2025, replacing Patrick Crarey II, who departed to lead Grambling State after just one season there. This marks Ward’s first college head coaching role. The former Heisman Trophy winner and 11-year NBA veteran arrives amid renewed optimism, aiming to build on FAMU’s progress and bring new energy to the Rattlers program. With his storied history in Tallahassee, the season is setting up for a pristine opportunity of community support and high-level basketball.

Florida A&M University catcher Broedy Poppell is officially headed to the pros. On Monday, July 14, the San Francisco Giants selected the FAMU star in the 13th round of the 2025 MLB Draft, using the 386th overall pick to grab one of the top two-way standouts in HBCU baseball.

A Hometown Star Heads to the Next Level

A Tallahassee native and graduate of Maclay School, Poppell has been a key figure for the FAMU Rattlers since joining the program in 2022. He entered the NCAA transfer portal following the conclusion of the 2025 season but remained in the spotlight thanks to strong showings at the MLB Draft Combine in June and the HBCU Swingman Classic, held just days before the draft.

With his selection, Poppell becomes the 29th player in Florida A&M program history to be drafted to Major League Baseball, according to The Baseball Cube. He’s also the first Rattler drafted since Aubrey McCarty, who was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the 26th round of the 2017 draft.

Giants Get a Proven Leader Behind the Plate

In 2025, Poppell anchored FAMU’s defense as the starting catcher. He posted a .973 fielding percentage, recorded 258 putouts, and earned First-Team All-SWAC honors. He was also named Second-Team All-SWAC in 2024.

At the plate, he brought power and consistency. Poppell hit .325, led the team with 69 hits and 12 home runs, and finished second on the roster with 58 runs scored.

His combination of defensive reliability and offensive production made him one of FAMU’s most valuable players—and a clear MLB prospect.

The post Another HBCU Star Bolts to Power Four Program appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Florida A&M’s (FAMU) Kirk Dawkins was one of the best stories in college track this season. Now, he’s taking his talents to a Power Four program. After a record-breaking run through the 2025 season, Dawkins—who proudly carried the HBCU banner into the NCAA Outdoor Championships—has entered the transfer portal and committed to Iowa State University of the Big 12.

It’s the latest blow in what’s becoming an all-too-familiar pattern: elite HBCU track and field talent leaving for Power Four programs. But to understand why Dawkins’ departure matters, you have to understand what he meant to FAMU.

A Star is Born in Tallahassee

Born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica—where sprinting is second nature and Olympic medals are a national currency—Dawkins grew up racing through the streets on errands for his parents. He honed his craft at Kingston College before taking a leap to the U.S. to compete at the University at Albany. The cold Northeast didn’t suit him, and after one season, Dawkins transferred to Florida A&M. That’s when everything changed.

With warmth on the track and in the community, Dawkins found his stride.

In 2025, he swept the SWAC’s indoor and outdoor 800-meter titles, added gold in the mile and 1500-meter, and broke through at the NCAA East Prelims with a personal-best 1:46.62 to punch his ticket to Eugene, Oregon, for the NCAA Championships.

“Saying that you’re going to make it to Eugene is one thing, but doing it is the next,” Dawkins told the Tallahassee Democrat before the NCAA Outdoor Championships. “I have some unfinished business.”

Dawkins wasn’t just representing FAMU in Eugene—he was carrying the HBCU flag solo in the 800-meter race.

“To know I’m the only one representing FAMU and HBCUs at the national meet is a very nice feeling,” he said. “It’s all about executing and coming out on top.”

A Track to Greatness

Even before the NCAA Championships, Dawkins had made history, becoming the first Rattler since 2022 to qualify for the event. His coaches, Garfield Ellenwood II and Tamika Kimchen, had seen this coming.

“We set out a plan,” Dawkins told the Democrat. “If I got to a specific point, we knew this season would be the year of glory.”

But it’s not just glory Kirk Dawkins is chasing. He’s eyeing a spot on Jamaica’s national team for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. He needs a 1:44.70 to qualify—less than two seconds off his PR.

“I believe with the training I’ve been doing and the mentorship of my coaches, family, and peers, I know I have a big chance of making it,” Dawkins said.

HBCU Power Four FAMU Iowa State Kirk Dawkins
The HBCU Exodus Continues

Dawkins’ transfer to Iowa State is the latest in a wave of high-profile HBCU track and field stars departing for Power Four schools this summer. He joins names like Jamarion Stubbs, Tyson Williams, and Amarianna Lofton.

Stubbs, a sprint king from Alabama State, announced his transfer to Arkansas after racking up six SWAC titles and a top-25 NCAA ranking in the 100 meters. Johnson C. Smith’s Tyson Williams—a freshman phenom and DII indoor 200m champ. Committed to South Carolina shortly after placing third at the NCAA DII Outdoor Championships.

Then came Central State’s Amarianna Lofton, a two-time SIAC high jump champion and elite multi-event performer, who announced her move to Purdue. She leaves CSU with four conference golds and a legacy of dominance in the jumps and hurdles.

One after another, HBCU stars are leaping from conference podiums to Power 4 lineups. And it’s not a knock on their original schools. It reflects how good HBCU programs have gotten at developing elite athletes.

Is it fair to ask a student-athlete not to chase greater exposure, better facilities, and potential Olympic pipelines? Or is it a gut-punch to programs like FAMU that have poured in the coaching, care, and culture?

Dawkins and the Dilemma

But Kirk Dawkins is different. While others left after DII championships or breakout freshman seasons, Dawkins reached the pinnacle of NCAA Division I competition—on his own terms, from an HBCU, without the hype machine of a Power Four behind him.

“All the hard work and the days of throwing up all paid off,” said Garfield Ellenwood II, Director of Track and Field at FAMU. “To see his excitement—that’s what it’s about… seeing them reach their goals.”

Still, the pattern is clear. HBCUs are producing world-class athletes, but keeping them is becoming the next big challenge.

Whether it’s improved NIL deals, better facilities, or Olympic development pipelines, Power 4 programs have plenty to offer. And while HBCU coaches remain proud of their athletes’ success, every departure leaves another “what if” behind.

The Legacy He Leaves

Dawkins was set to graduate in 2026 with a degree in Supply Chain Management, and his love for FAMU runs deep. He calls it “a place of culture,” and credits his transformation to the mentorship and support he received there.

“I’m not going to the meet like I’m from one of the smallest schools,” he said before the NCAA Championships. “It’s all about executing and coming out on top.”

Whether he runs his next race in Iowa State colors or on the world stage for Jamaica, Dawkins will always be a part of HBCU track and field’s proud lineage.

But his departure—and the growing trend it represents—raises big questions. Can HBCUs remain the launchpad for elite track talent and also the destination? Or are they now destined to be a proving ground from which Power Four programs pluck?

For now, all we know is this: Kirk Dawkins is headed to Iowa State. But the legacy he leaves at FAMU—and the fire he sparked across HBCU track—won’t fade anytime soon.

If you haven’t heard of the Savannah Bananas by now, you might just be living under a rock. Arguably the hottest team in sports today, the Bananas have redefined how fans engage with baseball. Combining athletic skill with entertainment, dance, and showmanship, the team delivers a high-energy spectacle that’s gone viral across the country. And with former HBCU standouts on the roster, their story has taken over the summer of 2025.

More than just athletes, the Savannah Bananas are performers and crowd favorites—and, yes, they play impressive baseball too.

Over the past week alone, the Savannah Bananas have sold out professional and college football stadiums. That includes a two-day takeover of the iconic Fenway Park in Boston. “Bananamania” is sweeping the nation, fueled by their unique brand of flair, fun, and fearless content creation.

HBCU Savannah Bananas

Their antics have made them a social media sensation. They’ve gone viral repeatedly, earned a feature on 60 Minutes, and solidified their place as the most unconventional—and beloved—team in sports.

Now, two proud HBCU alumni are helping lead the charge. Former Florida A&M University (FAMU) stars Malachi “Flash Tha Kid” Mitchell and Ty Jackson are among the team’s newest fan favorites. Both played their college ball at FAMU, one of the most tradition-rich HBCUs in the country, under longtime head coach Jamey Shouppe.

From FAMU to Banana Ball

Mitchell played for the Rattlers from 2017 to 2019. Though injuries limited his on-field time, he was part of the 2019 MEAC Championship team that advanced to the NCAA playoffs. His speed, charisma, and signature dugout catchphrases made him a team favorite—even when he couldn’t take the field.

One of his go-to lines? “Not even close,” delivered with flair anytime an opposing pitcher missed badly, especially on ball four. Mitchell may not have been a starter, but he was a heartbeat of the dugout.

Jackson, by contrast, was a breakout star. A two-time All-SWAC selection, he helped lead FAMU to its first-ever SWAC Baseball Championship in 2023. He kicked off the title game with a leadoff triple and was later invited to play in the MLB-sponsored Swingman Classic. He even received an opportunity with Team USA, though injury prevented him from participating.

HBCU Energy Meets Entertainment

Though their college careers were very different, both players brought a natural flair for entertainment. Mitchell was a livewire in the dugout, while Jackson made waves online by sharing behind-the-scenes team moments and interviews with teammates.

In fact, Jackson had a prior connection to the Savannah Bananas. He played with the team during summer ball before even joining FAMU—back when their brand was still gaining traction. With his eye-catching hair and powerful bat, he quickly became a standout.

Now, both HBCU products are thriving in an environment that blends talent with creativity. For Shouppe, their former coach, it’s no surprise.

“It’s not that they were prohibited from having fun at FAMU,” Shouppe said. “But winning and playing the right way were the priorities.” With the Bananas, he noted, the show is just as important as the score.

Ty Jackson
Talent Behind the TikToks

Mitchell, now known as “Flash Tha Kid,” has become a Banana Ball sensation. Whether leading TikTok dances, racing down the baselines, or promoting sliding mitts and energy drinks, he’s fully embraced the entertainment side of the sport.

“Malachi was probably the fastest player I ever coached,” Shouppe said. “That includes over 20 years at Florida State. His speed gave him the ability to change a game.”

Despite injuries and limited playing time at FAMU, Mitchell’s personality and drive have helped him find new life with the Bananas.

Meanwhile, Jackson’s hustle left a lasting impression on his coach.

“I went to see Ty play in junior college, and from his first at-bat I knew he was something special,” Shouppe recalled. “He lined out to the pitcher and ran a 4.0 flat to first base. He did it again—twice more. That kind of effort, most guys give up on. I knew I had to have him.”

The HBCU Journey Continues

The Banana Ball League is more than just a viral sensation. The rosters are filled with former Division I and pro-level talent. And remarkably, all of this has been built without corporate investors. Jesse Cole and his wife run the league independently, keeping the product pure and wildly original.

While Major League Baseball may not be the final stop for Mitchell and Jackson, they’ve found something arguably more rare—joy, freedom, and a spotlight that embraces everything they bring to the table as HBCU athletes.

“It’s good to be able to see these guys continue to play baseball,” Shouppe said. “I thought Ty would have an opportunity at the big leagues, but it didn’t work out. It’s great to see both of them make it in these environments.”

Florida A&M head men’s basketball coach Charlie Ward is beginning to shape his first coaching staff at FAMU, announcing the addition of Rob Lewis and Sebastian Aguilar on Monday, July 7.

Rob Lewis Joins as Assistant Coach

Rob Lewis will step in as an assistant coach, working alongside associate head coach Jarrod Lazarus. Lewis comes to FAMU after serving as the director of player development at East Carolina. His coaching background also includes two seasons (2022–2024) as a graduate assistant under longtime Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton. During that time, he played an instrumental role in the growth of former Seminole standout and current Washington Wizards rookie Jamir Watkins.

Ward expressed his enthusiasm for the hire, noting that Lewis brings significant experience, a strong understanding of the game, and a commitment to player development both on and off the court. He believes Lewis’s leadership and energy will greatly benefit the program.

Sebastian Aguilar Appointed Director of Basketball Operations

Joining the staff in an operations role, Sebastian Aguilar has been named Director of Basketball Operations. Aguilar most recently worked as a graduate assistant at Florida State from 2023–2025, where he supported the program through travel coordination, analytics, and event logistics, including the annual Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camp.

Prior to his time in Tallahassee, Aguilar served as a student manager at St. John’s University (2021–2023), where he worked with future NBA players Julian Champagnie and David Jones.

Ward highlighted Aguilar’s strong organizational skills, basketball IQ, and dedication to excellence as qualities that will be key to day-to-day operations for Florida A&M. He emphasized that Aguilar’s energy and insight will have an immediate impact on the program.

A New Era for Rattler Basketball

Ward, a Florida State legend who won the 1993 Heisman Trophy and led the Seminoles to a national championship, is entering his first season as head coach of the Rattlers. He previously spent seven seasons building the boys’ basketball program at Florida High School in Tallahassee.

He takes over for Patrick Crarey II, who accepted the head coaching position at Grambling State after leading FAMU to a 14-17 record and a SWAC tournament appearance in 2024, the Rattlers’ first since 2022.

On December 16, 2023, Willie Simmons guided his Florida A&M University (FAMU) Rattlers to an HBCU National Championship with a thrilling 30–26 win over the Howard Bison in the Cricket Celebration Bowl. Just over two weeks later, on January 1, 2024, Simmons shocked many by stepping down as FAMU’s head coach to take on the role of running backs coach at Duke University.

The announcement rippled across social media, stirring confusion and speculation. Why would a championship-winning head coach at an FCS powerhouse take a position coach role at an FBS school? Why not stay and defend the title? And why Duke—a university more renowned for basketball than football? The questions reflected the surprise and skepticism from fans and followers across the HBCU landscape. Many questioned whether Simmons was making the right move. Several podcasts questioned and even laughed at the move.

What wasn’t known publicly at the time was that Simmons had been receiving strong encouragement from an influential circle of friends and mentors—including coaching giants like Dabo Swinney, Manny Diaz, and Nick Saban. Their advice aligned with Willie Simmons’ long-term aspiration: to eventually become a head coach at the FBS level. Though the timing seemed unusual to outsiders, for Simmons, the moment was right.

Lack of minority coaches was a factor in Simmons’ decision

“It’s been well documented about the lack of minority head football coaches at the FBS level, and after speaking to my mentors and other prominent figures in the profession, I was advised that the best chance for me to become one of the few was to get P4 coaching experience,” Simmons said.

That opportunity came from Manny Diaz, who brought Simmons onto his Duke coaching staff. The result was a revitalized Blue Devils program that notched wins over Northwestern, North Carolina, NC State, and Florida State in one season. Duke came within reach of an ACC title shot, derailed only by a stumble against the University of Miami.

“I’m forever grateful to Manny Diaz for giving me the opportunity to coach at a program like Duke,” Simmons said. “We did some amazing things there!”

It Only Took a Season

Not long after the season, Simmons was offered the head coaching job at Florida International University (FIU), marking his return to a top leadership role—this time at the FBS level. FIU, coming off a 4-8 season, had not seen a winning campaign since going 9-4 in 2018. The program had endured several rough years, including a 1-11 record in 2021.

HBCU FAMU Willie Simmons

Despite its recent struggles, FIU showed offensive promise, particularly in the passing game. The school’s potential, along with the intimate energy of its Pitbull-named stadium in Miami, made for an intriguing new chapter. Simmons’ first priority was keeping hometown quarterback Keyone Jenkins, a lefty standout from Miami Central High School, from transferring. Simmons succeeded, convincing Jenkins to return and lead the Panthers’ offense.

A former Clemson quarterback himself, Simmons spoke the language Jenkins needed to hear. His track record with quarterbacks is well established, mentoring Ryan Stanley, FAMU’s all-time passing leader, and 2023 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year Jeremy Moussa during his time as an HBCU head coach.

What once appeared to be a puzzling move now seems to have been a calculated strategy. Simmons wasn’t playing checkers—he was playing chess. While some criticized the shift from head coach to position coach, Simmons was already planning two moves ahead. And the transition came with a significant salary increase as well.

Panthers have already generated a buzz under Simmons

Now at FIU, Simmons has injected new life into the program. The school’s social media engagement has surged, and branding efforts are positioning FIU as an exciting alternative to the University of Miami.

In a poetic twist, Willie Simmons’ first home game as an FBS head coach will be against Bethune-Cookman, his archrival, on August 29 while coaching at FAMU. Coincidentally, his former team, the FAMU Rattlers, will be in Miami that same weekend for the Orange Blossom Classic on August 30. Many fans are planning to attend both games—a symbolic full-circle moment.

Despite his departure, Simmons remains cherished by the FAMU community. He continues to support the university through donations, appearances, and interviews, always speaking fondly of his time there. He also hopes his path serves as an example of what’s possible for others.

“Hopefully future qualified HBCU head coaches don’t have to make the same sacrifices I made to achieve the goal of becoming an FBS head football coach!”

College Football ’26 is set to drop this week and a former HBCU coach will get some screen-time on the game. Willie Simmons is set to make his debut as a coach in the series as he starts his career at Florida International University (FIU).

This year’s game is the second since the EA Sports series restarted in 2024, re-branding as College Football instead of using the previous NCAA Football moniker. Last year’s game didn’t use the names, images or likenesses of real coaches, but this year’s game will do that.

The former Florida A&M University football coach was hired as FIU head coach in December after spending one season at Duke University as a running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Before he left FAMU he took the program back to the top of the HBCU football world, winning the SWAC title and Celebration Bowl in 2023.

Willie Simmons, HBCU

Simmons has previously appeared in a college football video game, however. During his playing days as a quarterback at Clemson from 2000-2002 he was on the game. But he was simply quarterback no. 7, as no player names were used during that iteration of the video game.

Of course, no HBCUs will be natively featured in this game as FCS schools haven’t been a part of the product for over 15 years. But another former HBCU coach will be in the game — but it won’t be Deion Sanders. Jerry Mack, a championship-winning head coach at North Carolina Central during the 2010s, will be in the game as well. Mack was hired as the head coach at Kennessaw State just ahead of Willie Simmons at FIU.

The global release date for College Football ’26 is July 10, but it is available earlier if you want to spend a little more.

Florida Budget Delivers $162M to HBCUs https://hbcugameday.com/2025/07/02/florida-budget-delivers-162m-to-hbcus/ https://hbcugameday.com/2025/07/02/florida-budget-delivers-162m-to-hbcus/#respond Wed, 02 Jul 2025 14:13:46 +0000 https://hbcugameday.com/?p=146957 Florida’s latest state budget invests $162M in HBCUs, with dedicated funds for operations and campus security upgrades.

]]>
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the state’s $116.5 billion budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The new spending plan delivers significant funding to the state’s four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU).

The budget includes more than $142 million in direct operational support, plus an additional $20 million for campus security upgrades. This marks one of the most substantial state investments in Florida’s HBCUs in recent years.

FAMU Leads in Funding

Florida A&M University (FAMU), the state’s only public HBCU, received the largest share. The university is allocated $110.5 million in operating funds. While early projections suggested the figure could reach $115 million, the final amount remains a major investment in FAMU’s academic and research growth.

Private HBCUs Secure Key Support

Three private HBCUs in Florida also benefit from this budget.
Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) will receive $17 million.
Edward Waters University (EWU) is set to get $7.5 million.
Florida Memorial University (FMU) will receive $7 million.

These operational funds support instruction, student services, faculty development, and campus infrastructure.

$20 Million for Campus Security

In addition to general funding, the legislature approved $20 million in “hardening” funds for HBCU campus security upgrades. This money is set aside for safety improvements like surveillance systems, secure entry points, fencing, and emergency response technology.

This separate security allocation comes amid growing concerns over threats targeting minority-serving institutions nationwide. It underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding Florida’s HBCU communities.

Steady Growth, But Not Historic

The 2025–26 budget continues Florida’s pattern of steady support for its HBCUs. While the allocations represent growth, they do not match some other states’ historic, one-time infusions. Even so, this funding provides stability and continued growth opportunities for these institutions.

HBCUs Remain a Priority in Florida

Florida’s latest HBCU investments arrive as higher education faces national debates over diversity programs and public funding priorities. Despite cultural and political tensions, this budget signals bipartisan recognition of HBCUs’ vital role in the state’s educational landscape.

With the fiscal year beginning on July 1, HBCU leaders will focus on turning these funds—both operational and security-focused—into real improvements for their campuses and the communities they serve.

Final Numbers Recap
 • Florida A&M University: $110.5 million
 • Bethune-Cookman University: $17 million
 • Edward Waters University: $7.5 million
 • Florida Memorial University: $7 million
 • Security Upgrades for All HBCUs: $20 million (separate from operations)
 • Total Investment: $162 million

The question of how Florida A&M University (FAMU) will pay incoming President Marva Johnson now depends on the state budget.

FAMU Foundation Pauses Budget Talks

As reported by WCTV, the FAMU Foundation has paused its budget review. The Foundation was working to find money for Johnson’s contract. A Monday meeting to discuss the issue was canceled, according to the meeting notice.

On Tuesday, WCTV shared a statement from FAMU Foundation Executive Director Anthony Neal. He said the meeting was canceled because of a “legislative provision regarding the President-Elect’s salary.”

New Budget Provision Offers Flexibility

The provision is part of Senate Bill 2502, which lawmakers passed last week. It gives FAMU’s Board of Trustees the power to use available reserves and old balances to pay the president’s salary. The money cannot come from the state’s General Revenue Fund or from tuition and fees.

WCTV reported that the provision was added to the bill on June 14. This was eight days after the FAMU Board of Trustees approved Johnson’s contract.

Contract Details and Funding Gap

Johnson’s contract includes a base salary of $650,000 per year. She is also eligible for extra bonuses and incentives that could total hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

The state can pay up to $200,000 toward her annual salary. The FAMU Foundation must cover the rest. The Foundation had previously approved only $388,562 for the president’s pay, leaving a shortfall.

A Possible Solution for FAMU

The new budget provision could solve this issue. If Governor Ron DeSantis signs the bill without vetoing the provision, Florida A&M can use reserves to pay Johnson’s full contract. This could prevent the Foundation from cutting other positions or projects.

The governor has until June 30 to approve or veto the budget.

According to Neal, the Foundation will meet again later to review its budget if needed. A new meeting date has not been announced yet.

The Florida Board of Governors has confirmed Marva Johnson, J.D., as the new president of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). The confirmation vote, held on June 18, was unanimous.

Johnson becomes the 13th president in FAMU’s history. She was originally selected by the FAMU Board of Trustees on May 16 following a national search that narrowed the field to four finalists.

“It is a profound honor to be selected as the 13th president of Florida A&M University,” Johnson said. “I’m ready to bring a bold, business-minded, results-driven approach to student success, financial growth, and institutional excellence.”

Her first official day as president is set for August 1.

A Background in Business and Education Policy

Marva Johnson has held leadership roles in both the corporate and public sectors. She previously chaired the Florida State Board of Education, where she supported performance-based funding and worked to close achievement gaps across the state’s colleges, according to a press release from the University.,

She has also received national recognition, including honors from Cablefax Magazine as one of the “Top Women in Tech.”

Florida Board of Governors Chair Brian Lamb said Johnson’s “visionary leadership” and corporate connections would help elevate FAMU’s student career pipeline.

Supporters Praise Her Vision

Leaders in Florida’s education system have praised Johnson’s confirmation.

Raymond Rodrigues, Chancellor of the State University System of Florida, said, “President Johnson brings a strong vision for student success and a commitment to elevating FAMU’s national profile.”

Supporters say her blend of business savvy and policy experience will guide FAMU into a new era of growth.

Strong Opposition from the FAMU Community

Despite the formal confirmation, Johnson’s appointment has drawn widespread criticism from FAMU alumni, students, and stakeholders. Some FAMU students and staff showed up at the Board of Governors meeting in Boca Raton to visually show their displeasure. As Johnson gave remarks, some in attendance rose and turned their backs to her as she spoke.

Concerns have been raised about her lack of experience in higher education administration and her political affiliations. Many believe her corporate background does not reflect the cultural values and grassroots history of the university.

This sentiment has been particularly visible on social media. In response to the announcement on FAMU’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, many users expressed opposition.

One user, @DatDuvalDude, wrote, “We can get through this Rattlers. We have to channel our outrage, and disdain for her and her controllers into hyper vigilance to protect The Hill as best we can until we can get her and all who are part of this hostile takeover out.”

Such messages reflect a growing distrust among members of the FAMU family, many of whom feel excluded from the presidential selection process.

Questions About Her Higher Ed Experience

Critics also point out that Johnson has never served in a leadership role within a university setting. While she brings strong credentials in business and policy, opponents argue that FAMU needs a leader with deep experience in historically Black higher education.

Some student and alumni groups have expressed concerns that her business-focused approach may sideline the needs of students and the preservation of FAMU’s unique institutional legacy.

What’s Next for FAMU

Johnson is expected to assume her duties on August 1. She steps into the role at a time when the university’s national profile is rising, but internal tensions are high.

Winning over FAMU’s dedicated alumni base and current students may prove to be one of the defining challenges of her presidency. How she engages the campus and community in her first months could set the tone for her tenure.

Oluwamodupe "Dupe" Oloyede becomes the first female Head Drum Major of FAMU’s legendary Marching “100.”

The glass ceiling in the world of FAMU’s Marching “100” drum majors has officially been shattered. Dr. Shelby Chipman, Director of Bands, announced Oluwamodupe Oloyede as the head drum major for the 2025–2026 HBCU band season. Known affectionately as “Dupe” (pronounced du-pay), she was previously the second-ever female drum major in the band’s history.

Following in the Footsteps of a Trailblazer

Cori Bostic, the first female drum major in the Marching “100,” paved the way and has become one of Dupe’s most vocal supporters. Their shared bond highlights the growing legacy of women leading at the highest levels in HBCU marching bands.

A Natural Leader from the Start

Dupe began her drum major journey at Southwest DeKalb High School, one of the largest feeder programs into the Marching “100.” Her prior leadership experience made her a standout candidate when she joined the Marching “100” as a drum major last season.

Although her primary instrument is the saxophone, it was her presence and poise on the field that caught attention. Staff and fellow members weren’t surprised when she was named head drum major for the upcoming season.

Dupe Embraces the Moment

“I’m really excited for the season. I’m blessed and honored because I know what this role means—and how much work it requires,” Oloyede said. “But with all the encouragement and support I’m getting, I feel ready.”

She added, “This year, coming off the Marching ‘100’ being named ESPN’s Band of the Year in 2024, we’re coming in strong. I’m confident in my ability and in my squad’s ability to take the season by force.”

Strong Leadership for a Demanding Season

Dr. Chipman shared his excitement about the HBCU band’s leadership team during a private Zoom call with band alumni. This year’s band is expected to hit the ground running with a high-profile start to the season.

“We’ll perform at the Pepsi Battle of the Bands in Texas, send a pep band to the U.S. Open in New York to honor Althea Gibson, and end that week in Miami at the Orange Blossom Classic,” he said.

As head drum major, Dupe represents not only excellence on the field but also off it. “We look for someone who exemplifies discipline, communication, and a deep understanding of our traditions,” Chipman explained.

From Blending In to Taking the Spotlight

Last season, Dupe was proud that many couldn’t distinguish her from the other drum majors—she wanted to be part of the team, not defined by gender. This year, however, she steps into a new spotlight.

With media interest certain to grow, Dupe understands the gravity of her role. “There’s no blending in when the band can’t move until your whistle blows,” she said.

Preparing for a Historic Start

This August, the Marching “100” will perform in three different states. Oloyede knows the importance of being in mid-season form even before the football season officially starts.

“Our strategy is to prepare early and work efficiently,” she said. “The leadership corps, including the executive board and the new COO student leader, are focused on detailed planning before the season begins.”

Pressure and Purpose

Dupe doesn’t take the weight of being “the first” lightly.

“I know the pressures are real, but I use myself as my competition. If I focus on the odds, I’ll fail. But if I focus on improving and understand the greater purpose, I’ll do better,” she said.

She added, “Even if I didn’t have the support, I’d still be amped. Last year I proved it’s possible. This year, I’m here to dominate—and shut the haters up.”

A New Era for the Marching “100”

Cori Bostic sees this moment as part of a larger HBCU band movement.

“For the first time in Marching ‘100’ history, the top three student leadership positions—Head Drum Major, Band President, and Assistant to the Band Director—are all held by women,” Bostic noted. “Dr. Chipman’s leadership has pushed the band into new territory.”

For Bostic, watching others soar is a reward in itself. “Traditions evolve. There’s no better feeling than seeing those who come after you reach higher.”

Drum Major Brotherhood Stands Behind Her

Support has poured in from the FAMU Marching “100’s” close-knit fraternity of former drum majors. One of them, Victor “Batman” Gaines, praised Dupe’s selection.

“In a time when qualifications are questioned, Dupe has earned her spot. She’s focused, inspiring to young girls, and backed by those who came before her,” he said.

What’s Ahead for FAMU’s Iconic Band

This year, FAMU’s Marching “100” will feature seven drum majors—two returning and five new. Dr. Chipman emphasized the importance of selecting leaders who embody the values of the HBCU program.

“When I choose drum majors, I’m looking for someone who could speak on my behalf and represent the university well,” he said.

With 230 returning students and an energized leadership team, expectations for the Marching “100” are high. The band is poised for one of its most dynamic seasons yet.

TAMPA, FL – Former Florida A&M University softball star Amber Fullwood will receive a special honor from her hometown Major League Baseball team. On August 22, the Tampa Bay Rays will recognize the former HBCU great during their “FAMU Night with the Rays” celebration. As part of the event, Fullwood will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

A Well-Deserved Recognition for HBCU softball

This tribute comes just weeks before Fullwood’s official induction into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame, set for September. During her time at Florida A&M, Fullwood helped lead the Rattlers to four consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships—an unprecedented achievement in the program’s history.

“I was on vacation and was shocked when I got the call that I had been voted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame,” Fullwood said. “My initial reaction was shock. I was honored and excited. This means the world to me. More than the recognition, the hard work, the sacrifices, late nights, the greatness that coach Veronica Wiggins put into us—to celebrate that with some of the best players to ever come through FAMU is truly humbling to me.”

Game Day Details for Rattler Fans

Due to damage at Tropicana Field from Hurricane Milton, the Rays are currently playing their home games at George Steinbrenner Field, the New York Yankees’ spring training facility in Tampa. The August 22 game will include a special FAMU-themed promotion.

Fans can purchase tickets in sections 215–217, which are reserved for Rattler supporters. Each ticket comes with a limited-edition corduroy FAMU baseball cap.

Former Teammates Join the Celebration

Fullwood asked the Rays to allow her former teammates to join her on the field before the game. The team agreed to her request.

“Obviously there’s only one first pitch and I’ll be doing that alone, but I wanted my teammates who lived close to join in the celebration with me,” Fullwood said.

Amber Fullwood’s Record-Breaking Career

A Tampa native, Fullwood was a four-year standout under legendary FAMU coach Veronica Wiggins. She earned the MEAC Freshman of the Year award in 2014, was selected First Team All-MEAC three times, and served as team MVP her senior year.

She joined the program in 2013 as part of a historic six-player recruiting class. Together, they created a dominating HBCU softball program:

 • Four straight MEAC championships
 • Four NCAA Regional appearances
 • Multiple All-MEAC and All-Academic Team honors
 • A perfect graduation rate—earning diplomas together in four years

This group was honored by FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson at commencement for their combined success in the classroom and on the field. They remain the only six athletes in school history to achieve this milestone.

Career Highlights and Stats

Amber Fullwood also ranks among the best in FAMU’s softball record books. Key highlights include:

 • Most hits in 2014: 47
 • Most at-bats in 2014: 189
 • Most doubles: 10 (2014) and 12 (2017)
 • Most RBIs: 30 (2016) and 31 (2017)
 • Ranked No. 6 in career RBIs in FAMU history: 110

Beyond the diamond, Fullwood has been active in her community. Her HBCU experience at Florida A&M was more than just sports. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she has participated in numerous service projects, while also working through church organizations to make a positive local impact.

The Rays will face the St. Louis Cardinals on August 22 at 7:35 PM. Fans are encouraged to arrive by 7:00 PM to see Fullwood throw out the first pitch. To join the FAMU section and receive a complimentary FAMU corduroy cap, tickets must be purchased through Rays representative Heather Turner at (727) 387-6879 or via the following link: 2025 FAMU Night Tickets. Florida A&M University, a leading HBCU in Division I athletics, has strengthened its men’s basketball program with a high-profile hire. FAMU head coach Charlie Ward has appointed Jarrod Lazarus, a veteran coach with deep experience at Florida State, as the new Associate Head Coach for the Rattlers.

This move continues the program’s commitment to building a winning culture and developing student-athletes on and off the court.

“Jarrod Lazarus is the perfect addition as Associate Head Coach at Florida A&M,” said Ward. “His leadership, passion for the game, and dedication to developing young talent will elevate the program.”

Lazarus, a proven winner, expressed enthusiasm for joining the historic HBCU program.

“I’m thrilled to join Florida A&M Men’s Basketball and be part of such a historic program,” Lazarus said. “I want to thank Coach Ward for this opportunity. I look forward to embracing the culture and helping take the team to new heights.”

Bringing Florida State Experience and NCAA Success to HBCU basketball

Lazarus brings elite coaching credentials. At Florida State, he served as an Assistant Coach under Leonard Hamilton and previously as Director of Basketball Operations for five seasons. He helped lead the Seminoles to the Sweet 16, the 2020 ACC Championship, and a No. 4 final national ranking.

During his time there, Lazarus helped develop NBA lottery picks Patrick Williams and Devin Vassell, making him a key figure in one of the ACC’s most efficient programs.

USF and MTSU Coaching Impact

At USF, Lazarus guided the Bulls to a 24-win season and a College Basketball Invitational Championship, completing the biggest turnaround in the NCAA that year. Earlier, at Middle Tennessee State, he helped upset top-seeded Michigan State and Minnesota in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments.

Strong Foundation and Academic Background

Lazarus began coaching with Gold Coast Basketball AAU under legendary coach Marcos “Shakey” Rodriguez. He earned a B.S. from Florida State and an MBA from Middle Tennessee State University.

Before his Florida days, Wright IV starred at Gainesville’s PK Yonge High School, where he played quarterback under the watchful eye—and tough love—of his father. Who served as an assistant coach alongside another Gator great, Willie Jackson Jr. Together, the two former Florida standouts tried to resurrect a once-proud Blue Wave program that had been hit hard by transfers and graduation.

“A plethora of graduates, combined with outgoing transfers, left PK Yonge HS with only 24 players in the 2023 season,” Wright III told All Gators. “We don’t have many kids, but we’re working with them on teaching them warrior mentality, develop as men, character.”

That kind of culture-building was on full display during a thrilling win over Santa Fe in 2023. PK Yonge pulled out a last-second 28-27 victory. Wright IV rushed for two touchdowns and led the team with clutch plays down the stretch.

“My dad always told me that when the game’s coming down, I’ve got to make a play,” he said after the game. “He preaches intensity, intensity, intensity. You’ve got to fight back pressure with more pressure. Pressure breaks pipes, pressure builds diamonds.”

Those weren’t just words. They were a mantra he lived by, earning a preferred walk-on spot at the University of Florida. But after not seeing the field in 2024. Wright IV decided it was time for a new chapter.

“Thank you Gator Nation for every opportunity you have brought to me,” Wright IV wrote on social media. “It has truly been a blessing from God to play in the orange and blue. With that said, after a long consideration with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal and am open to every opportunity given.”

Florida Gators HBCU FAMU Lawrence Wright
Following a New Blueprint: HBCUs as QB Launchpads

Wright IV joins a growing list of quarterbacks who’ve looked to HBCUs for a second chance to shine. Former Power 4 QBs are increasingly choosing HBCUs for meaningful snaps and real development.

Now, Lawrence Wright IV aims to do the same at Florida A&M University (FAMU) —an HBCU that knows a thing or two about winning.

QB Room Reset in Tallahassee

FAMU’s quarterback room has been anything but stable in 2025. The Rattlers saw significant turnover in the spring, both incoming and outgoing. JUCO star Jett Peddy transferred into the HBCU from Long Beach City College after earning All-League honors. Tyler Jefferson, a dual-threat from Central Michigan, brings two years of FBS experience to the table. CJ Montes, a Walter Payton Award finalist at Fordham, initially committed to FAMU but reversed course and rejoined Kent State.

And then there’s the departure of redshirt junior Junior Muratovic, who entered the portal after three seasons in Tallahassee.

In short, the room is talented—but unsettled. That’s where Wright IV could come in.

He’s walked into pressure before. He’s played under the spotlight of a family legacy. And now, with FAMU eyeing a return to the Celebration Bowl in 2025. The quarterback job could be up for grabs.

Diamonds in the Rattler Rough?

FAMU has built its name on dominant defenses and explosive skill talent, but finding stability at quarterback will be the key to a championship run this fall. Head coach James Colzie III has inherited high expectations and a roster full of playmakers, but he needs someone under center who won’t flinch when the pressure is on.

Lawrence Wright IV may not have taken a college snap yet. But his background and pedigree make him a player to watch. The road from walk-on to starter is never easy. But diamonds are forged under pressure, and in Tallahassee, Wright IV might be ready to shine.

HBCU Gameday has confirmed that Florida A&M University has made a major addition to its athletics department. Maurice “Mo” Sims has been named the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance and Wellness at FAMU, a move expected to bolster the health and development of student-athletes across all programs.

Sims brings a wealth of experience from some of the nation’s top athletic programs. Most recently, he served on Deion Sanders’ staff at the University of Colorado as the head strength and conditioning coach. He originally joined Sanders at Jackson State in 2022, playing a pivotal role in developing a winning culture within the program.

Career path leads back to HBCU football at FAMU

Before his time at JSU, Sims spent two seasons at the University of Georgia, where he was part of the Bulldogs’ 2021 College Football National Championship-winning staff. His previous coaching stops include stints at the University of North Carolina (2019), Army West Point (2017–2019), Indiana University (2014–2015), and North Carolina A&T (2012–2014). At each institution, he contributed to the physical and mental preparation of athletes at the highest level of competition.

Maurice Sims, Jackson State, Colorado, FAMU, HBCU, Deion Sanders

Sims also has roots as a player. He was an all-conference defensive back at Concord University before transferring to the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, giving him a firsthand understanding of the athlete experience and a unique perspective as a performance coach.

He now steps into a senior leadership role at FAMU during a pivotal time for the Rattlers. The football team, led by second-year head coach James Colzie III, is seeking to build on recent momentum in the SWAC. Sims is currently participating in an offseason coaching fellowship with the NFL’s Houston Texans, further strengthening his professional acumen.

Colorado, under Sanders, wrapped up a 9-4 season in 2024 that ended with a 36-14 bowl loss to BYU. Since leaving Jackson State, Sanders has compiled a 13-12 record at CU. As Sims transitions into his new post at FAMU, his holistic approach to wellness and elite training standards are expected to elevate the entire athletic department.

FAMU Athletics Director Angela Suggs is facing serious legal issues as new details emerge in a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) affidavit. The charges relate to her previous role as President and CEO of the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF), which she held before joining FAMU in October 2024.

FDLE investigators say Suggs used her FSF-issued credit card for personal casino expenses 23 times from August 2022 to August 2024, totaling $23,206.56. During a June 2024 trip, she made nine charges in one day totaling $13,817.60 at a Seminole Hard Rock Casino. Another $5,877.30 was charged during a three-day stay at Potawatomi Bingo in Wisconsin.

Suggs told FSF officials she accidentally used the wrong credit card. However, the FDLE alleges she knowingly submitted false travel documents to cover up the personal spending. In one case, she claimed $649.98 in charges at Resorts World Las Vegas were for business meals, but receipts showed cash withdrawals. People listed as dining companions said they didn’t know Suggs or weren’t present.

Suggs (right) poses after a win at the Florida Blue Classic in Nov. 2024.

The affidavit also mentions a $250 charge near Nashville at a hair and makeup business. It further alleges Suggs had FSF staff use electronic signatures to approve her travel documents.

Suggs began repaying some of the money in 2024, including a $15,167 cashier’s check and $5,877.30 in Western Union money orders sent in September—just weeks before she officially started at FAMU. However, $1,314.62 remains unpaid, according to the report.

Suggs turned herself in to the Leon County Jail on June 9 and was released on $13,500 bond. She faces charges of fraud and theft. As of June 11, no court hearings have been scheduled. FDLE noted Suggs has no prior arrest history in Florida.

FAMU has placed Suggs on administrative leave as the case unfolds.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Angela Suggs is on administrative leave following her arrest on larceny and fraud charges connected to a previous employer.

FAMU Interim President Dr. Timothy Beard released a statement to HBCU Gameday:

“Florida A&M University is aware of allegations involving Athletics Director Angela Suggs and a former employer. While the matter is unrelated to FAMU, she has been placed on administrative leave with pay until further notice. Athletics business operations will continue under the deputy directors of athletics, Travis Glasgow and Brittney Johnson.”

The move comes roughly 24 hours after Suggs’ arrest on charges stemming from her former job. Hired as FAMU’s athletic director in September, Suggs is accused of misusing a company-issued credit card during her time with the Florida Sports Foundation (FSF).

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), the investigation began in November. Suggs allegedly made unauthorized wire transfers, cash withdrawals, and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling over $24,000. Investigators say she falsified travel vouchers, listing the charges as meal expenses.

When questioned, Suggs claimed some of the charges were business-related and others were mistakenly placed on the company card. She did not fully reimburse FSF for the personal spending.

Authorities charged Suggs with four counts of fraudulent travel claims, one count of fraud to obtain property under $20,000, and one count of grand theft for an amount between $20,000 and $100,000. Her bond was set at just under $15,000.

In a personal statement, Suggs addressed the situation:

“Regarding the charges recently brought against me in connection with my previous place of employment, I want to make it clear that these matters are entirely unrelated to Florida A&M University or my current role. I am fully committed to addressing these allegations through the appropriate legal channels. I regret the distraction caused, and I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support, fervent prayers, and continued encouragement I’ve received during this most difficult time. I remain focused, resilient, and committed to our shared goals and determined to fulfill our ongoing, planned, and collective success.”

FAMU, which has seen frequent turnover in its athletics director role, is also in the midst of a presidential transition. Marva Johnson has been appointed to take over leadership of the university.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs was booked into the Leon County Jail after voluntarily submitting herself for fraud and larceny charges related to her former job as President and CEO for the Florida Sports Foundation. The arrest was a result of what was investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).

Angela Suggs is a celebrated FAMU alum who has been upstanding in her community and with the alumni base. She was hired in September of 2024. She tackled several short-term issues and was beginning to concentrate on long-term goals in the midst of a presidential search and hiring taking place at the school.

At the Florida Sports Foundation, Suggs oversaw Florida’s $74 billion sports tourism industry. She led efforts in securing, hosting, and retaining sporting events and sports-related business throughout the state. She managed multi-million dollar grant programs supporting both amateur and professional sports events.

The investigation, began in November, revealed that Suggs misused her FSF-issued credit card to make wire transfers and cash withdraws and personal purchases at casinos during business trips, totaling more than $24,000. She then falsified travel vouchers, coding the unauthorized charges as meals. When asked about the unauthorized charges, Suggs claimed some were for business meals and others were accidentally charged to the business card. She failed to fully repay FSF for her personal expenditures.

Suggs was charged with four counts of fraud claims for travel expenses, one count of fraud-swindling to obtain property under $20,000 and larceny grand theft $20,000 or more but under $100,000. Her total bond amount was just under $15,000.

FAMU, known for its carousel of athletic directors, continues to seek continuity in its athletics leadership. Suggs’ appointment was seen as an opportunity to stabilize the constant rotation.

Suggs previously worked in FAMU Athletics as Senior Woman Administrator and Sr. Associate Athletic Director. She oversaw the marketing and promotions of the department which saw exponential growth under her guidance. She also fine-tuned FAMU’s branding. Many of the official athletic department marks and logos were developed under her administration as Sr. Associate Athletic Director.

She was instrumental in increasing ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, and royalty revenue for the university. FAMU’s athletic programs achieved significant success during her tenure, with numerous conference championships across multiple sports.

FAMU President makes statement on charges

“Florida A&M University is aware of the allegations involving our athletics director, Angela Suggs, while she was working with a former employer. While the matter is unrelated to her duties as an employee at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation and will respond in the future as appropriate,” Dr. Timothy Beard, FAMU Interim President.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is preparing to finalize a high-profile contract for its next president, Marva Johnson. The Board of Trustees will hold a virtual meeting on June 6 at 9 a.m. to vote on a proposal offering Johnson a $650,000 base salary plus added benefits.

Johnson Asked for More, Board Offered Less

Johnson initially requested a $750,000 base salary. However, after negotiations, both parties settled on $650,000 for a five-year term. While this figure is below her ask, it still exceeds former President Larry Robinson’s final salary of $451,711. Interim President Timothy Beard currently earns $400,000.

Trustees had previously approved a salary range of $450,000 to $750,000 for FAMU’s next leader.

Bonuses and Salary Growth Included

The agreement includes the following:

 • An $86,000 performance bonus for receiving an “Exceptional” or “Outstanding” review
 • 3% annual salary increases
 • Use of the President’s Residence
 • A $1,200 monthly car allowance
 • Reimbursement for travel and business expenses
 • Access to club memberships as needed

Faculty Position Guaranteed After Presidency

Johnson is guaranteed a position at the FAMU College of Law after her presidency ends, unless she is terminated for cause.

“Upon the end of her service as president for any reason other than death, disability or termination for cause, the president will be appointed as a university faculty member at the College of Law at the same base salary of the highest paid College of Law faculty member,” the contract states.

Next Steps: Two Key Votes Ahead

The contract requires approval from two governing bodies:

 • FAMU Board of Trustees on June 6
 • Florida Board of Governors on June 18 at Florida Atlantic University

The June 6 meeting is public and will be hosted via Zoom. Visit FAMU’s Board of Trustees website for access details.

To make a public comment, email:
kimberly.taylor@famu.edu
Deadline: 5 p.m. on June 5
Include the agenda topic you plan to discuss.

Alumni Pushback and Delayed Budget Vote

The proposed agreement comes at a time of continued tension surrounding the search process. Many alumni are angry over what they see as a politically motivated appointment. Some accuse Gov. Ron DeSantis of selecting Johnson to align higher education with his political goals.

Due to these concerns, several alumni have vowed to withhold financial support. They do not want donations to fund Johnson’s salary.

The FAMU Foundation Board of Directors echoed those concerns. On May 30, they postponed a vote on a 2025–2026 budget amendment. This spending plan would fund the president’s compensation. Board members said they needed more time to review available funds.

Final Thoughts

FAMU is facing a pivotal decision. The salary proposal and public criticism reveal deeper challenges in the university’s leadership and political environment. The next few weeks will shape not only FAMU’s executive future but also its relationship with the broader community.

The Rattlers are headed back to Atlanta. In a bold move announced at the FAMU National Alumni Association Convention in Frisco, Texas. FAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs revealed that the October 4, 2025, matchup between Florida A&M and Mississippi Valley State has been relocated from Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, Mississippi, to the bright lights of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, the NFL home of the Atlanta Falcons.

“They decided they were coming to FAMU, Georgia ? also known as Atlanta,” Suggs said during the AD’s Breakfast on May 30. “So once October 4, we won’t be in Itta Bena, Mississippi. We will play Mississippi Valley State University in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.”

The change in venue means the Rattlers will make yet another high-profile appearance in the ATL—a city that’s been good to FAMU in recent years. In 2023, the Rattlers captured their first-ever Celebration Bowl title with a thrilling 30-26 win over Howard. FAMU clinched its 16th HBCU football championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In 2024, they edged Norfolk State 24-23 in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Center Parc Stadium, the former home of the Atlanta Braves.

But this year’s game comes with an added edge.

Revenge Game
HBCU NFL Atlanta FAMU Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Last season, MVSU shocked the HBCU football world by pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent memory—snapping FAMU’s 23-game home win streak at Bragg Memorial Stadium. That streak dated back over five seasons. Even more stunning? It was Valley’s only win of the 2024 season.

The October 4 rematch now gets a much bigger stage—and a chance for FAMU to settle the score.

Adding another layer of intrigue: both head coaches share Florida State bloodlines. MVSU’s Terrell Buckley, a Jim Thorpe Award winner and former NFL standout, starred at cornerback for the Seminoles from 1989 to 1991. FAMU’s James Colzie III followed a few years later, suiting up in garnet and gold from 1993 to 1996.

Buckley is entering his first season leading the Delta Devils, and Colzie is stepping into year two as the leader of the Rattler football program.

With storylines stacked, a revenge narrative in play, and two former FSU corners going head-to-head on NFL turf, this HBCU clash promises fireworks. And Atlanta—aka FAMU, Georgia—is ready for the show.
