What was supposed to be a hard-fought SWAC showdown turned chaotic at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, as a brawl erupted during halftime of the HBCU contest between Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. The melee led to nine total ejections — five from Grambling State and four from Bethune-Cookman — after tempers flared when both teams came out of the locker room. GSU won the game 31-24.

Chaos at Halftime

The game was already physical before the incident, but the tension boiled over as players jawed near midfield heading into the third quarter. The confrontation quickly escalated into a full-on HBCU brawl, with players from both sidelines charging and several being thrown into team benches. Officials and coaches worked to restore order, but not before multiple ejections and a lengthy delay.

Conference and school officials are expected to review footage and impose further disciplinary actions. The brawl overshadowed what had been one of the more competitive HBCU matchups of the weekend.

Grambling State’s Big Plays Make the Difference

Despite the distractions, Grambling State quarterback Hayden Benoit delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-20 passing..His connection with wide receiver Nae’Saan Dickerson produced a 59-yard strike late in the second quarter that helped the Tigers take a 24-20 halftime lead.

Running back Andre Crews was the engine of Grambling’s offense, rushing for 130 yards on 14 carries, including multiple chunk plays that kept the Bethune-Cookman defense on its heels. Grambling’s balanced attack totaled nearly 200 rushing yards and controlled the ball for over 32 minutes.

Bethune-Cookman’s Passing Attack Shines

For Bethune-Cookman, quarterback Timmy McClain was nearly flawless through the air, completing 15 of 18 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. His top target, Maleek Huggins, torched Grambling’s secondary with six receptions for 122 yards and a 61-yard touchdown that tied the game 17-17 just before halftime.

Kicker Juan Dominguez also played a key role, hitting all three of his field goal attempts, including a 42-yarder late in the fourth quarter to cut Grambling’s lead to eight.

The latest HBCU brawl

While the on-field play was strong on both sides, the brawl will dominate headlines and social media discussions in the coming days. What began as a thrilling matchup between two programs fighting for position in the SWAC standings turned into a cautionary tale about composure and sportsmanship.

Grambling State improved to 6-3 on the season, while Bethune-Cookman fell to 5-4. Both teams are expected to face scrutiny — and possibly suspensions — heading into next week’s games.

For a program steeped in tradition like Grambling State, the victory will be tempered by the controversy, while Bethune-Cookman leaves Ruston wondering what might have been had the focus remained between the lines.

Saturday’s clash was more than just a football game — it was a reminder of how quickly emotions can spill over in rivalry atmospheres across HBCU football in particular and college football in general.

AUBURN, Ala. — The No. 20 Auburn Tigers opened the 2025–26 college basketball season with a narrow 95–90 overtime victory over a resilient HBCU program in Bethune-Cookman on Monday night. The Tigers were pushed to the limit before escaping behind a decisive advantage at the free-throw line.

Free Throws Make the Difference

Auburn’s margin came largely from the stripe, where it outscored the Wildcats 27–8. Keyshawn Hall was nearly automatic, going 16-for-18 from the line en route to a game-high 28 points. Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton combined for 24 more, and both were steady late as Auburn survived a furious Bethune-Cookman rally that forced overtime.

The HBCU squad from Daytona Beach shot nearly 51 percent from the field and an impressive 54.5 percent from beyond the arc, but the foul disparity proved too much to overcome. Auburn attempted 38 free throws to Bethune-Cookman’s nine, a gap that loomed large as the game wore on.

Auburn

HBCU squad came to play

Bethune-Cookman, representing the SWAC, refused to be intimidated by the nationally ranked Tigers. Guard Arterio Morris led the HBCU effort with 20 points and five three-pointers, while forward Daniel Rouzan added 16 points and six rebounds inside. Quentin Heady was the heart of the Wildcats’ attack, scoring 21 points with several key plays down the stretch, including the free throws that tied the game at 81–81 and forced overtime.

The Wildcats actually led 83–81 early in the extra period after an Ariel Bland put-back, but Auburn responded with an 11–5 run sparked by Hall and Overton. The Tigers’ depth and ability to draw contact ultimately decided it.

Auburn’s Frontcourt Answers the Call

While Hall and Pettiford carried the scoring load, Auburn’s frontcourt was crucial in the second half. Freshman forward KeShawn Murphy delivered 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Elyjah Freeman added eight points and two key dunks to shift momentum late.

A Wake-Up Call for Auburn

For Auburn, this season opener was far from routine. The Tigers entered the night as heavy favorites against the HBCU visitors but needed all 45 minutes to prevail. The close call served as both a warning and a reminder that early-season chemistry can be fragile.

Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman walked away with national respect — an HBCU program that outshot and outplayed a Top 25 SEC team for long stretches, proving it can compete on college basketball’s biggest stage.

Brian Jenkins was at the helm of the Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) Wildcats the last time they won conference and national championships. Since then, Jenkins has moved on and even stepped out of coaching for a period. In 2023, Toriano Morgan, head coach of the Edward Waters Tigers, brought along Jenkins to help rebuild the HBCU program as it stepped up from NAIA to NCAA D-II.

Raymond Woodie’s Rebuilding Effort at B-CU

Raymond Woodie was brought to B-CU after Terry Sims left the HBCU. Between Woodie’s hire and Sims’ departure, there was a delay and a virtual “circus” surrounding the B-CU campus with the engagement of NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Woodie’s hiring squelched the noise, and he began rebuilding the B-CU program.

Anchoring the HBCU since 2021 has been former NBA All-Star Reggie Theus. Serving dual roles as Director of Athletics and head basketball coach, Theus has acquired donations, built up infrastructure, and, according to coaches, has supported his colleagues in the department with what they need to be successful. Theus helped build an on-campus dedicated turf football field, enhanced the weight room, and built a locker room for the football program. Before Theus, none of these things were available to the student-athletes.

Woodie’s tenure as head coach has not been complimentary of the success the Wildcat nation had grown accustomed to. In his third season as head coach, the Wildcats have managed only five wins. To be fair to Woodie, he has faced the FIU Panthers, Miami Hurricanes, and 2024 MEAC Champion South Carolina State Bulldogs. There were no easy paths to early success with the 2025 slate.

Wildcats Struggle to Reclaim Success

The Wildcats must win this Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach. B-CU will host EWU at 3:00 PM, and this game is not a cakewalk either.

The Tigers are coming off a monumental upset of the Virginia Union Panthers 41-38 on ESPN+. Showing that they have the grit it takes to be a champion. Brian Jenkins’ championship stamp is all over this Edward Waters team. Even so, Jenkins downplays his return to Daytona Beach.

“If they’re looking for a dog fight, then we’re going to be ready,” Jenkins said. We’re treating this game just as we treat every other game and preparing for it the same. We’re not making a big deal out of it. It’s a football game. We know we have an opponent to play, and it’s Bethune-Cookman, so there’s no specialness to it for me or my team.”

South Carolina State turned Dawson Stadium into a fireworks show on Saturday night, outlasting Bethune-Cookman in a 55-41 SWAC vs MEAC thriller that lived up to every bit of the HBCU conference rivalry hype.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Bulldogs Blitz Early

The Bulldogs (2-1) wasted no time setting the tone, exploding for 24 first-quarter points. Quarterback Ryan Stubblefield engineered the attack with efficiency, going 21-of-35 for 286 yards and a touchdown through the air while adding 31 yards and two rushing scores.

The MEAC defense also joined the party early. With Bethune quarterback Timmy McClain under pressure, Malik Harp scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, putting SCSU up 21-0 before the first quarter ended.

Wildcats Find a Spark

Bethune-Cookman (0-3) looked dead in the water, trailing 27-0 in the second quarter, before redshirt senior quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom entered the game. Ransom provided an immediate jolt, leading a 17-play, 75-yard drive capped by his own two-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats’ first points of the HBCU football season.

From there, Ransom kept the SWAC program alive. He finished 20-of-30 for a game-high 302 yards with four passing touchdowns while also rushing for 78 yards and two more scoresbethune stats. Wideout Maleek Huggins was his top weapon, torching the SCSU secondary for 148 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches.

Second-Half Fireworks

Every time Bethune clawed closer, South Carolina State had an answer. After a missed PAT left the Wildcats trailing 27-13, Stubblefield extended the lead with a 13-yard keeper. A controversial fumble call in the red zone stalled another B-CU drive, and SCSU made them pay with a Stubblefield-to-Jordan Smith touchdown strike. Smith finished the night with nine catches for 87 yards and a score.

Bethune didn’t quit, though. Ransom connected on bombs to Huggins and Lorenzo Jenkins as part of a furious 28-point fourth quarter. But each Wildcat push was countered by a Bulldog haymaker—none bigger than Mason Pickett-Hicks’ 69-yard sprint to the end zone that snuffed out momentum. Pickett-Hicks needed just four carries to rack up 87 yards and that game-breaking touchdown.

By the Numbers

This was a pure offensive slugfest. The SWAC and MEAC teams combined for 1,068 yards of total offense—561 for SCSU, 507 for Bethune-Cookman.

 • SCSU Offense: Stubblefield (335 total yards, 3 TDs), Pickett-Hicks (87 yards, 1 TD), Tyler Smith (53 yards, 1 TD).
 • B-CU Offense: Ransom (391 total yards, 6 TDs), Huggins (148 yards, 2 TDs), Morales, and Jenkins with touchdowns.
 • Defenses: SCSU’s Roderick Kelly led with 10 tackles, while B-CU’s Antwone Watts had seven stops.
What’s Next

South Carolina State heads to Tampa next weekend to face FBS foe South Florida on Sept. 20, with a noon kickoff. Bethune-Cookman finally gets a home HBCU crowd when it hosts Edward Waters at Daytona Stadium on the same day. A matchup set to coincide with Hall of Fame Weekend and Welcome Dr. Mosley Day.

Former five-star recruit Arterio Morris is officially taking his talents to Bethune-Cookman University (BCU), giving the Wildcats one of the most intriguing pickups in recent HBCU basketball history.

What Happened

According to recruiting insider Dushawn London, Morris is set to join BCU after a rollercoaster journey through some of the nation’s top programs.

Morris spent last season at South Plains College, averaging 11.9 points per game and flashing the high-level skill that once made him a McDonald’s All-American out of Kimball High School in Dallas, Texas.

Before that, he had stints at both Texas and Kansas, where his career was marred by off-the-court issues.

The Rocky Road So Far

Why This Move Matters for HBCU Basketball

For HBCU basketball, Morris’ decision is a headline-making move. Bethune-Cookman isn’t typically in the national spotlight, but landing a player with Morris’ pedigree shows that HBCUs can attract top-tier talent looking for a second (or third) chance.

This move could also change how other high-profile transfers view historically Black colleges and universities. With the right support system, Morris has the chance to remind fans why he was once considered one of the best players in the 2022 recruiting class.

What’s Next for Morris at Bethune-Cookman

The big question: Can Morris stay focused and maximize this opportunity?

On the court, his skillset—scoring, playmaking, and athleticism—fits perfectly in the Wildcats’ system. Off the court, this may be his last real shot to prove that he can balance maturity with his basketball future.

If he buys in, Morris could elevate BCU into a contender in the SWAC and turn into one of the most talked-about players in HBCU basketball this season.

Final Takeaway

Arterio Morris’ path has been anything but smooth, but his next chapter at Bethune-Cookman could be the redemption story both he and HBCU hoops have been waiting for.

? Question for Fans: Do you think Arterio Morris will thrive at Bethune-Cookman and spark a new wave of HBCU basketball recruiting power?

The reports are now a reality. What was first reported last week has been officially confirmed: Bethune-Cookman and Southern will clash in the 2025 Tampa Bay Football Classic at Raymond James Stadium—bringing HBCU football to the home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Neutral-Site HBCU Showdown

The October 11 showdown will spotlight a matchup from one of the most historic HBCU conferences on one of football’s biggest stages. Kickoff is locked for 4 p.m. Eastern, with tickets going on sale Tuesday, Sept. 2, via tampabayfootballclassic.com and Ticketmaster.

In the spirit of most HBCU football Classics, the Tampa Bay Football Classic is packaged as more than a game—it’s an all-day celebration. Every ticket purchased includes access to pre- and post-game events, a VIP day-party atmosphere, and entrance to the main event inside Raymond James Stadium.

Bands, Culture, and a New Twist

Of course, no HBCU Classic is complete without the bands, and Tampa will deliver in a big way. The Bethune-Cookman Marching Wildcats are locked in, while the Southern University Human Jukebox is tentatively set to make the trip as well. Fans can expect halftime to feel like a headliner concert rather than just a break in the action.

And then there’s the new wrinkle: Band VERZUZ Band. Inspired by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, who created the Verzuz series, this marching band battle will flip the script. Instead of artists trading hits, powerhouse bands will go head-to-head in eight rounds of “super heavyweight” action, streamed worldwide.

Michael E. David, founder of the Tampa Bay Football Classic and the Original Battle of the Bands—which famously inspired the movie Drumline—called the event “a one-of-a-kind atmosphere” that will resonate far beyond Tampa.

“We are equally thrilled to introduce our new marching band sport special event property in Band VERZUZ Band. Band VERZUZ Band is the sweet musical science in the precision of the sport of marching band.”

NFL Tampa Bay Football Classic Bethune-Cookman Southern University HBCU
Economic and Cultural Impact

The Classic isn’t just about football and music—it’s about community. Andre “Lucky” White, the event’s executive director, said the game will “bring our communities together to celebrate and share in the culture, sportsmanship, and richness of the Tampa Bay Area and its HBCU culture.”

Early estimates suggest the game could generate $10 million to $30 million for the local economy. For the Moses White Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event, that economic lift goes hand-in-hand with its mission of education, revitalization, and empowerment for underserved communities in Tampa.

The Bigger Picture

For HBCU football, landing another NFL venue is part of a growing trend. From the recently cemented Georgia Classic in Atlanta to this new Classic in Tampa, HBCU matchups, specifically in the SWAC, are carving out spaces in the same stadiums that host the NFL’s biggest games. It’s a clear sign of rising demand for HBCU sports, culture, and entertainment. From both fans and from major cities eager to showcase them.

Bethune-Cookman and Southern will bring the SWAC smoke. The bands will bring the show. Tampa will bring the stage. On Oct. 11, the Tampa Bay Football Classic won’t be just another date on the schedule.

Southern University and Bethune-Cookman’s October 11 showdown is allegedly moving to a bigger stage. WAFB 9Sports in Baton Rouge reports the game will shift from Daytona Stadium to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Eastern (3 p.m. Central). 9Sports sources also say the contest will be called the Tampa Bay Classic.

This marks the second time in three years that the Jaguars and Wildcats will battle on an NFL field in Florida.

A Familiar Script: HBCU Matchups in NFL Stadiums

This venue switch highlights a growing trend of high-profile HBCU football games landing in NFL stadiums. In 2023, Southern and Bethune-Cookman played at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville after scheduling conflicts forced the game out of Daytona.

The trend continues this season. Florida A&M and Mississippi Valley State will face off on October 4 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the Georgia Football Classic. With that game and the new Tampa Bay Classic, fall 2025 looks like a season where HBCU football regularly steps onto NFL turf.

HBCU NFL Raymond James Stadium Tampa Bay Classic
Why This Matters for HBCU Football

Neutral-site games create opportunities. Programs can stretch recruiting footprints, rally alumni in major cities, and build bowl-like atmospheres during the regular season. For Southern and Bethune-Cookman, playing in Tampa transforms a typical conference matchup into a cultural showcase.

This fall, events in Atlanta and Tampa clearly demonstrate the rising appeal of HBCU football. The rivalries remain fierce, but the stage is now just as grand.

The Bottom Line

What started as contingency plans in Jacksonville two years ago has now become a winning formula. Raymond James Stadium will provide the stage, while Atlanta sets the tone a week earlier. Together, these games highlight a season in which fans can expect not just competition but a celebration of HBCU tradition, culture, and pride—played out under NFL lights.

The Bethune-Cookman University athletics community is mourning the loss of former bowling head coach Chelsea Gilliam, who died Thursday, Aug. 7, after a nearly decade-long battle with cancer. She was 35. Known for her bright, bubbly spirit and unwavering determination, Gilliam joined the HBCU in October 2018 to lead the Wildcats’ bowling program.

She arrived from Youngstown State University and made history as the school’s first bowling head coach.

Gilliam took over Bethune-Cookman’s HBCU bowling program during the 2018-19 season, navigating a year marked by roster challenges due to injuries. Her leadership and resilience left a lasting impression on the Maroon and Gold family.

A Championship Legacy

Before her collegiate coaching career, Gilliam was a standout student-athlete at the University of Pikeville. As a 2012 Pikeville women’s bowling team member, she helped capture the program’s first NAIA national championship. The team’s accomplishment earned them induction into the Bears Hall of Fame in November 2018.

That season, Pikeville entered the year ranked No. 1 in the NAIA Coaches Poll and secured the No. 3 seed in the national tournament. Gilliam and her teammates twice defeated Webber International, a team they had previously lost to, to clinch the historic title.

Gilliam graduated from Pikeville in 2012 with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and psychology.

Building Programs from the Ground Up

Gilliam’s coaching journey began at Union College in Kentucky. From 2012 to 2015, she led both the men’s and women’s bowling teams. She guided the men’s squad to back-to-back runner-up finishes in the Mid-South Conference Tournament and was named the league’s Women’s Co-Head Coach of the Year in 2014.

Gilliam spent her first year building the program from scratch at Youngstown State. She recruited the inaugural roster and set the team schedule. The Penguins debuted in 2016-17 and quickly rose to prominence, earning Top 25 rankings in her two seasons at the helm.

A Fighter and Inspiration

Gilliam was first diagnosed with breast cancer at just 23 years old in 2013. She fought through treatment, only to be re-diagnosed in May 2016. Her resilience inspired many, both inside and outside the bowling community.

She appeared in a commercial alongside WWE superstar Roman Reigns, sharing her cancer journey and encouraging others facing similar battles. Gilliam also documented portions of her chemotherapy on social media, aiming to inspire courage and perseverance.

Earlier this month, a fundraiser was held in her honor near her home in Ormond Beach, Fla., as she continued her treatments.

Bethune-Cookman University officials, former players, and colleagues across the HBCU bowling community remember Chelsea Gilliam for her coaching achievements and the grace and determination with which she faced life’s greatest challenges.

The spotlight hit MetLife Stadium. The beat dropped. And with over 70,000 fans watching, WWE Women’s World Champion Naomi, real name Trinity LaShawn Fatu, made her way to the ring at SummerSlam Night 2—escorted not by pyrotechnics or dancers, but by her own father, ripping live guitar riffs to her entrance theme. It was an unforgettable moment. And yes, there’s an HBCU connection at the heart of it all.

Before she stepped into the ring to defend her title against IYO SKY and Rhea Ripley, Naomi walked proudly to the sound of her father, Shawn McCray, playing her theme song live. The moment was epic, but for McCray—known professionally as Derek Mack—it was more than just a performance. It was the culmination of decades of musical mastery, built from the ground up, stage by stage, tour by tour… and campus by campus.

A WWE Moment Rooted in Musical Legacy

Shawn McCray didn’t just show up for the moment—he helped build it. A lifelong musician and leader of South Florida’s acclaimed Derek Mack Band, McCray is known for his high-energy performances across genres like R&B, classic rock, contemporary jazz, and blues. He’s shared stages with legends like The Commodores, BB King, and Cameo, and served as a music director at Disney World’s Buena Vista Palace Resort.

But long before SummerSlam or stadium tours, McCray’s musical journey began in his grandmother’s Pentecostal church in West Palm Beach, Florida. He picked up guitar at age 6 and later studied music theory at the Chauncey Westbrook Guitar School. His first bands played at birthday parties and school shows—small stages with big dreams.

The HBCU That Helped Shape the Sound

And here’s where the HBCU piece fits in: according to his LinkedIn profile, McCray is a proud graduate of Bethune-Cookman University, one of the most historic HBCUs in the country. While studying business administration at the Daytona Beach campus, he formed his second band, Sporty, which quickly became a sensation on campus and in local clubs. That experience—collaborating, performing, grinding—would shape the rest of his career.

Through the years, McCray has remained rooted in community, often bridging entertainment and education. He even taught high school music while touring, always giving back the same energy that fueled his own journey.

A Family Entrance for the Ages

At SummerSlam, that journey came full circle. As Naomi walked the aisle to defend her WWE Women’s World Championship, it was her father’s guitar that signaled strength, legacy, and love. It wasn’t just showmanship—it was soul. And for fans who recognized the man behind the music, it was a subtle but powerful tribute to HBCU excellence on one of the world’s biggest stages.

In an industry that thrives on spectacle, this entrance stood out for its simplicity and depth: a daughter walking into battle, and a father playing her there—grounded in rhythm, culture, and a legacy built by hand.

On a warm Saturday evening in his hometown of Daytona Beach, NBA Hall of Famer Vince Carter was honored by the Daytona Tortugas with a jersey retirement ceremony at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The event paid tribute to Carter’s deep local roots and lasting impact on the sports world, drawing a lively crowd of fans, family, and community leaders. Among the notable guests in attendance was Reggie Theus, athletic director at Bethune-Cookman University, an HBCU located just minutes from the stadium.

Theus, a former NBA All-Star and head coach, joined the celebration—bringing both his basketball legacy and institutional visibility to an event celebrating one of the city’s most iconic athletes.

Carter, a Mainland High School graduate and Olympic gold medalist, rose to fame through a 22-year NBA career that included eight All-Star appearances and a reputation as one of the league’s most electrifying dunkers. His jersey retirement by the Tortugas marked a hometown milestone for a global basketball figure.

Theus Brings Star Power and Strategy to HBCU Athletics

Theus, who became Bethune-Cookman’s athletic director in 2021, is one of the few former NBA stars to lead an HBCU athletic department. His presence at events like Carter’s jersey retirement not only underscores his stature in the sports world, but also creates broader exposure for HBCU programs striving to grow their brand in a competitive collegiate sports landscape.

As a player, Theus was drafted ninth overall in the 1978 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls. He went on to average over 18 points per game across 13 NBA seasons, including stints with the Kings, Hawks, and Magic. A two-time NBA All-Star, Theus tallied over 19,000 career points before transitioning into coaching and later athletic administration.

His unique experience across professional basketball, broadcasting, and college coaching equips him to elevate institutions like Bethune-Cookman—helping them attract talent, build partnerships, and increase visibility in the HBCU athletic space.

Saturday’s event in Daytona Beach was more than a local tribute. It was a convergence of past and present—honoring Vince Carter’s legacy while highlighting the influence of leaders like Reggie Theus, who continue to open new doors for HBCU programs across the country.

Monday, July 7, 2025, marks a significant milestone for Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) as Dr. Albert Mosley officially assumes the role of its 8th president. Dr. Mosley brings over 30 years of experience in higher education and nonprofit leadership to B-CU.

A Visionary Leader with a Transformative Track Record

A first-generation college graduate from Shuqualak, Mississippi, he holds degrees from Millsaps College, Duke University, Yale University, and the University of Georgia. Prior to joining B-CU, Dr. Mosley served as president of Morningside University in Iowa, where he spearheaded the development of innovative academic programs in fields such as aviation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and supply chain management. His tenure at Morningside was also marked by securing record-breaking philanthropic support, bolstering the institution’s endowment and funding several capital projects.

Dr. Mosley’s selection followed an intensive national search that attracted 135 applicants. The process, though comprehensive, was not without controversy. Earlier this year, student protests erupted when interim President Dr. William Berry, who had been recommended by two search committees and a student committee, was not chosen for the permanent role

A Quiet Commencement Amidst a Broader HBCU Leadership Landscape

While Dr. Mosley’s appointment is a significant development for B-CU, it has garnered relatively modest media attention compared to recent leadership changes at other historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). For instance, Florida A&M University (FAMU) has been prominently featured in the news following the appointment of its new president, whose tenure has been marked by high-profile initiatives and public engagements.

Charting a New Course for Bethune-Cookman University

As Dr. Mosley steps into his new role, the B-CU community looks forward to a period of revitalization and growth. His extensive experience and commitment to academic innovation position him well to build upon the legacy of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and guide the university into its next chapter.

While his tenure begins with a quieter public profile, the impact of Dr. Mosley’s leadership is anticipated to resonate deeply within the B-CU community and beyond.

Bethune-Cookman is getting two familiar faces back. Former Wildcats Zion Harmon and Jakobi Heady are set to return to Daytona Beach for the upcoming season after spending a year away from the program. Both players announced their decisions on Thursday, April 24, including social media posts that quickly gained traction across several media outlets.

Zion Harmon, a 6-foot point guard, is coming back to B-CU after a brief stint at Seton Hall. Last season, he played just three games for the Pirates under Head Coach Shaheen Holloway, logging 14 minutes with one rebound and one assist. Before transferring, Harmon was a key piece for the Wildcats from 2022 to 2024. The Maryland native scored 847 points in two seasons, shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from three. He led Bethune-Cookman with 111 assists during the 2023-24 season and helped guide the team to its first postseason appearance under Head Coach Reggie Theus at the 2024 Ro College Basketball Invitational. Harmon will return as a redshirt senior.

Heady had a huge season while away from Bethune-Cookman

Jakobi Heady is also making his way back to the Maroon and Gold. The 6-foot-6 forward spent the 2024-25 season at Central Michigan, where he played alongside his brother, Quentin. Heady made a major impact, leading the Chippewas with 466 points (15 ppg) and 203 rebounds (6.5 rpg). He shot 42.3 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line while starting in 26 of 31 games. During his 2023-24 campaign at B-CU, Heady scored 524 points, averaging 15.4 points per game and shooting an efficient 47.9 percent from the floor. He also knocked down 40 three-pointers at a 32.3 percent clip.

Both Harmon and Heady are eligible to return immediately and are expected to bring experience and firepower back to Coach Theus’ squad.

Florida Budget Delivers $162M to HBCUs https://hbcugameday.com/2025/07/02/florida-budget-delivers-162m-to-hbcus/ https://hbcugameday.com/2025/07/02/florida-budget-delivers-162m-to-hbcus/#respond Wed, 02 Jul 2025 14:13:46 +0000 https://hbcugameday.com/?p=146957 Florida’s latest state budget invests $162M in HBCUs, with dedicated funds for operations and campus security upgrades.

]]>
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed the state’s $116.5 billion budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The new spending plan delivers significant funding to the state’s four historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU).

The budget includes more than $142 million in direct operational support, plus an additional $20 million for campus security upgrades. This marks one of the most substantial state investments in Florida’s HBCUs in recent years.

FAMU Leads in Funding

Florida A&M University (FAMU), the state’s only public HBCU, received the largest share. The university is allocated $110.5 million in operating funds. While early projections suggested the figure could reach $115 million, the final amount remains a major investment in FAMU’s academic and research growth.

Private HBCUs Secure Key Support

Three private HBCUs in Florida also benefit from this budget.
Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) will receive $17 million.
Edward Waters University (EWU) is set to get $7.5 million.
Florida Memorial University (FMU) will receive $7 million.

These operational funds support instruction, student services, faculty development, and campus infrastructure.

$20 Million for Campus Security

In addition to general funding, the legislature approved $20 million in “hardening” funds for HBCU campus security upgrades. This money is set aside for safety improvements like surveillance systems, secure entry points, fencing, and emergency response technology.

This separate security allocation comes amid growing concerns over threats targeting minority-serving institutions nationwide. It underscores the state’s commitment to safeguarding Florida’s HBCU communities.

Steady Growth, But Not Historic

The 2025–26 budget continues Florida’s pattern of steady support for its HBCUs. While the allocations represent growth, they do not match some other states’ historic, one-time infusions. Even so, this funding provides stability and continued growth opportunities for these institutions.

HBCUs Remain a Priority in Florida

Florida’s latest HBCU investments arrive as higher education faces national debates over diversity programs and public funding priorities. Despite cultural and political tensions, this budget signals bipartisan recognition of HBCUs’ vital role in the state’s educational landscape.

With the fiscal year beginning on July 1, HBCU leaders will focus on turning these funds—both operational and security-focused—into real improvements for their campuses and the communities they serve.

Final Numbers Recap
 • Florida A&M University: $110.5 million
 • Bethune-Cookman University: $17 million
 • Edward Waters University: $7.5 million
 • Florida Memorial University: $7 million
 • Security Upgrades for All HBCUs: $20 million (separate from operations)
 • Total Investment: $162 million

Two HBCUs will step onto a major stage this college basketball season as Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman both appear on Indiana University’s 2025–26 non-conference schedule. Each team will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Big Ten powerhouse early in the season.

Alabama A&M begins new era

Alabama A&M opens Indiana’s season on November 5. The Bulldogs are entering a new chapter under head coach Dontae Jackson, who takes over after a successful stint at Grambling State. Last season, A&M finished 10–22, but Jackson brings a reputation for building tough, defensive teams. He aims to inject a winning culture and boost recruiting through his SWAC connections and national network.

Donte Jackson is Alabama A&M’s new basketball coach after turning Grambling State into a SWAC champion two seasons ago.

Bethune-Cookman closes out November

Bethune-Cookman faces Indiana on November 29. The Wildcats are coming off a 17–16 campaign under head coach Reggie Theus, a former NBA All-Star with deep coaching experience. Theus has steadily elevated the program’s credibility and competitiveness. With several key players returning, BCU looks to continue its momentum and won’t shy away from the Big Ten spotlight.

Why These Matchups Matter

For both HBCUs, these games offer more than just competition—they bring visibility, financial support, and a chance to measure up against top-tier talent. Facing Big Ten teams helps prepare HBCU programs for their conference slates while giving players national exposure.

These games also highlight a growing trend. Big Ten schools increasingly schedule HBCUs in non-conference play, often providing much-needed financial boosts for smaller programs through guarantee game payouts.

Embracing the Challenge

With proven coaches like Jackson and Theus leading the way, Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman are ready to represent the HBCU community with pride. Expect both teams to compete hard and make the most of their national stage this season.

Bethune-Cookman University head coach Johnny Hernandez is having himself a year. He led the Wildcats to a record home runs in a season and ended the HBCU baseball season by winning the SWAC Baseball Championship on the last swing of the game. The team advanced to the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee. As if that wasn’t a good enough conclusion to the season, Hernandez, who has been on the staff of Team USA baseball for some time now, was named manager of the Team USA prospects team.

Based in Cary, NC, the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp trains select collegiate baseball players for international competition.

HBCU Coach leading Stars vs Stripes

Johnny Hernandez will lead his squad in the annual Stars vs. Stripes series, which will be held June 29 to July 3 at various locations across North Carolina. Following Training Camp, which features 56 of the premier non-draft-eligible collegiate players in the country, the Stars staff will lead Team USA at the 45th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Championship Series from July 8-13 at various venues across Japan. The Stripes staff will guide select players on a Collegiate National Team Prospects squad in a Fourth of July matchup with the Appalachian League Select Team in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

“We are excited about the coaching staff we have put together for this year’s Collegiate National Team Training Camp,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball’s General Manager of Collegiate and Professional National Teams. “This is a strong group of coaches who will be able to provide our players with a world-class experience this summer. We look forward to not only competing at a high level with our two exposures, but also developing the select players we bring to Cary and providing them with a wealth of knowledge from this group of coaches.”

Nick Collins is stepping back onto the NFL stage—but this time, he’s trading in pads for a playbook. The former HBCU football star and Super Bowl-winning safety is returning to the Green Bay Packers as a coach, joining the training camp staff by participating in the NFL’s prestigious Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

It’s a full-circle moment, not once but twice, for the former Pro Bowler. Collins is currently serving as the cornerbacks coach at his alma mater, Bethune-Cookman, mentoring players in the same position he once dominated. Now, he returns to the team where he became a household name, this time as a coach.

Collins’ story is the stuff of HBCU football folklore. Coming out of Daytona Beach, Florida, he played with passion and power at Bethune-Cookman. He quickly earned a reputation in the MEAC for his blazing speed, high IQ, and physical style of play. The Florida native was a leader on the Wildcats’ defense. Helping elevate the program’s national profile at a time when HBCU players still struggled for NFL visibility.

That changed in 2005 when the Packers took Collins in the second round—shocking many analysts, but not those who knew his film. Collins blossomed into one of the best safeties in football. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and played a key role in Green Bay’s Super Bowl XLV victory. His pick-six against the Steelers in that game remains etched in Green Bay Packers lore.

Next Evolution

Collins’ playing career was cut short due to a neck injury in 2011, but his football journey didn’t end there. After coaching high school football for Trinity Catholic and Lake Highland Preparatory School, where he helped win Lake Highland Prep back-to-back state championships in 2021 & 2022. Collins returned to where it all began, accepting a role as BCU’s cornerbacks coach in 2023, bringing NFL knowledge, HBCU pride, and a mentor’s heart back to Daytona Beach.

His return to Green Bay through the Bill Walsh Fellowship represents the next evolution of that journey. Participating in a platform for minority coaches to gain NFL experience and build careers in the league.

The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, named after the legendary 49ers head coach, is designed to expose talented minority coaches to NFL training camps and operations. For Collins, this is more than just professional development. It’s a rare chance to represent where he came from while preparing for where he’s headed. And show that the HBCU-to-NFL pipeline doesn’t stop at playing careers. It extends into leadership, coaching, and legacy.

From Daytona Beach to Lambeau Field and back again. Nick Collins is walking the path he once blazed—this time, guiding others through it.

Bethune-Cookman Baseball saw its 2025 season come to a close over the weekend in the NCAA Tournament’s Tallahassee Regional, falling to Florida State and Northeastern in a pair of hard-fought contests.

The Wildcats opened the regional Friday against No. 9 national seed Florida State. Despite out-hitting the Seminoles 10-6, B-CU came up short in a 6-2 loss marked by a two-hour weather delay. Sophomore right-hander Joel Core stayed on the mound through the delay, striking out seven over seven innings. Jorge Rodriguez delivered a key two-run single to tie the game early, but FSU responded with a pair of home runs, including a two-run blast from Myles Bailey that put the Seminoles ahead for good.

Saturday’s elimination game against No. 19 Northeastern was a heartbreaker. The Wildcats battled back twice to tie the game, but the Huskies scored two runs in the top of the ninth to escape with a 4-3 win. A solo home run and a B-CU defensive miscue proved costly, although the Wildcats mounted a last-inning threat. With runners in scoring position and the SWAC Co-Hitter of the Year Andrey Martinez at the plate, the Huskies closed it out with a strikeout.

Martinez led the Wildcats with a 2-for-5 performance and an RBI, while Daniel Figueroa and Darryl Lee contributed key hits in the effort.

Bethune-Cookman finishes its season with a 37-23 record and a SWAC championship title. Head Coach Jonathan Hernandez, named 2025 SWAC Coach of the Year, praised his team’s grit and composure on the national stage.

Bethune-Cookman Baseball NCAA Tournament 2025 may have ended in defeat, but the Wildcats showcased resilience and promise for the future of the program.

Bethune-Cookman University heads into the NCAA Tallahassee Regional with momentum and belief, taking on host Florida State out of the ACC on Friday at 3 p.m. ET at Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. The Wildcats (SWAC champions) enter the four-team regional as the No. 4 seed, while the Seminoles are the No. 9 national seed and ranked No. 7 in the latest D1Baseball.com Top 25.

This marks Bethune-Cookman’s sixth appearance in the Tallahassee Regional. The Wildcats are winless in 10 previous games, including five losses to Florida State. Head Coach Jonathan Hernandez, fresh off celebrating his daughter’s high school graduation, believes this year’s squad is different.

“We come into this regional with nothing to lose. That makes us dangerous,” Hernandez said. “Nobody expects us to win, but we believe.”

The Wildcats’ belief is bolstered by a dramatic walk-off win over Florida A&M in the SWAC Championship, where Andrey Martinez’s three-run homer capped a 19th come-from-behind victory of the season. Martinez tied the program’s single-season home run record (20), and shortstop Jeter Polledo went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the title game.

Florida State (38-14), led by ACC Player and Defensive Player of the Year Alex Lodise, boasts a .315 team batting average and averages nearly eight runs per game. The Seminoles finished runner-up in the ACC and are making their 61st NCAA Tournament appearance.

Bethune-Cookman will need another inspired performance to challenge the Seminoles and snap their postseason drought.

Our Vaughn Wilson will be at the game embedded with the Wildcats. Stay with HBCU Gameday for updates, details and behind-the-scenes access with Bethune-Cookman University.

Coming behind a legend is such a difficult proposition for a coach. Bethune-Cookman (B-CU) has had such a high level of performance in baseball that it has produced two legendary baseball coaches back-to-back. With Sunday’s win in the SWAC Baseball Championship, Jonathan “Johnny” Hernandez is making room in a talented legacy.

Merv Melendez established the Wildcats as a force to be reckoned with by not only dominating the MEAC, but picking up wins from mid-majors and Power Four schools along the way. He was followed by Jason Beverlin who continued to high levels of accomplishment.

Beverlin’s 2017 Wildcats achieved the improbable. They won the MEAC and made serious noise in the NCAA Regional in Gainesville. They defeated the Florida Gators for the first time in school history in the championship round, before falling to the No.3-seeded Gators in the championship game. Beverlin was immediately scooped up after that performance.

Big cleats to fill at Bethune-Cookman

In 2018, Hernandez was hired to take over the program. There was a shadow of success and extremely large shoes to fill. Hernandez, who had success both as head coach of ASA College in Miami and as a coach/recruiter for Team USA baseball, took the challenge head-on. It was not easy to start, however, he had an immediate impact. His 2019 class was the highest-ranked class in B-CU history at 59th as ranked by Perfect Game.

“Coach Beverlin and Coach Melendez, those two guys did great things here in our program,” Hernandez said. “For us to be able to get the program back where it needs to be, and that’s at the top of what is now the Southwestern Athletic Conference, when I took the job, we were in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and it was an opportunity for us to get right back to it. Having that championship mindset day in and day out, I wear that on my sleeve every day.”

Transitional phase

Hernandez began with a 17-38 season in 2019. The 2020 and 2021 seasons were COVID-interrupted years. The Wildcats would transition to the SWAC in 2021, where the first season was played in 2022. The Wildcats managed a 27-32 season on the restart of baseball. Since then, each of the last three seasons, B-CU has won 30-plus games. In 2023, the team went 33-27, in 2024 the team went 32-27, and this year the Wildcats are sitting at 37-21, Hernandez’s best season ever.

The team also brought home the first SWAC title in school history after dominating the MEAC to capture 17 titles. It is a clear signal that Hernandez was the right choice to lead B-CU for the future. Additionally, in the era of APR, Hernandez has a perfect record of student-athlete academic success.

“I have to commend our players too, because we had a 3.5 GPA in the fall and a 3.5 GPA in the spring. So that’s back-to-back championships in the classroom that ultimately lead to what we have right now, a SWAC baseball title in front of us. It’s been a grind, but I’ve enjoyed every part of the process, and you start to see the fruit of the labor right now with how the program has evolved in the last couple of years.”

Bethune-Cookman wins SWAC Championship with walkoff homer

It was only fitting that B-CU’s best-ever home run-hitting team capture the SWAC championship with a walk-off homer deep to center field with two outs in the final inning of the SWAC Baseball Tournament against in-state rival FAMU. As Andrey Martinez’s blast cleared the centerfield fence, the chess match was complete with a checkmate from B-CU’s Johnny Hernandez to FAMU’s Jamey Shouppe. B-CU has hit 90 home runs this season.

While the two schools are arch rivals, the respect that Hernandez and Shouppe have for one another is unmatched. The pregame meetings at home plate have often been comical. When the game starts though, it’s every man for himself. The Rattlers derailed the Wildcats’ first opportunity at a SWAC title in 2023, so it was only fitting that in much the way they have played all season, they beat the Rattlers with the last at-bat of the tournament.

Hernandez had one final word for any Rattlers in Tallahassee who love to watch baseball. “If there’s any cousins of ours that rocked the orange and green, if they want to come out and support, I think it’ll be huge. For our program and for the SWAC to have everybody involved to come out and support the Wildcats as we’re representing not only our program, our university, but the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the HBCU space as a whole.”The Wildcats are the only Division-I HBCU to make the NCAA Regionals.

Bethune-Cookman University (BCU) secured its place in the 2025 NCAA Baseball Tournament by triumphing over Florida A&M on Sunday in the SWAC Championship game held at historic Rickwood Field . This win not only crowned them SWAC champions but also marked their return to the NCAA postseason, representing the sole HBCU in this year’s tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Jonathan Hernandez, the Wildcats have demonstrated resilience and growth throughout the season. Andrey Martinez’s two-out, three-run home run to straightaway centerfield gave Bethune-Cookman a walk-off come-from-behind 11-9 win over FAMU, earning the tournament berth.

“What a finish to an incredible baseball game,” said Bethune-Cookman Head Coach Jonathan Hernandez. “Our guys never gave up, and Andrey [Martinez] came through in the biggest moment of the year.”

Their journey continues as they enter the Tallahassee Regional, facing a formidable opponent in No. 9 Florida State University (FSU) on Friday at 3 p.m. ET, with the game broadcasted on the ACC Network.

Close loss against Florida State this year

Historically, BCU has faced challenges against FSU, holding an 0-9 record in their matchups dating back to 2000. Their most recent encounter on March 5, 2025, resulted in a narrow 9-7 loss, indicating a competitive edge that could be pivotal in the upcoming game.

The Wildcats’ appearance in the NCAA Tournament not only highlights their athletic achievements but also underscores the significance of HBCUs in collegiate sports. As they prepare to challenge a top-seeded team, BCU embodies the spirit of determination and excellence, aiming to make a lasting impact on the national stage.

Making the loss even more bittersweet for FAMU is the notion that they would have been able to play at home in the Tallahassee regional versus FSU.

Fans and supporters can follow the Wildcats’ progress and updates at HBCUGameday.com and the ACC Network’s coverage of the Tallahassee Regional.

Bethune-Cookman University captured the 2025 SWAC Baseball Championship with an exciting 11-9 victory over Florida A&M on Sunday, May 25, at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The Wildcats (37-21) rallied late and outslugged the Rattlers (33-25) in a high-scoring HBCU affair marked by timely hits and defensive miscues.

The offensive showcase featured a combined 24 hits and 20 runs. Bethune-Cookman’s Andrey Martinez was the standout performer, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth that sealed the game. Jorge Rodriguez added a two-run homer in the eighth, while Jeter Polledo went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

Florida A&M jumped into contention with a six-run surge across the sixth and seventh innings. William Brown sparked the Rattlers with a two-run homer and scored three times. Justen Crews matched the momentum with a two-run shot of his own in the seventh.

Bethune-Cookman led 3-0 early, but FAMU fought back to tie and eventually take a brief lead. The Wildcats responded with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth before Martinez’s dramatic walk off blast in the bottom of the ninth.

Reliever Joel Core (6-1) earned the win for BCU, closing the door with 1.1 innings of scoreless work. Florida A&M’s Carson Kelly (6-2) took the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) over 7.1 innings.

With the victory, Bethune-Cookman claims the SWAC Baseball Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats will play on representing HBCU baseball in the postseason, capping a resilient conference season with championship gold.

The 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Championship game is set to feature a thrilling matchup between two HBCU powerhouses: Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Bethune-Cookman University. The championship game will take place on Sunday, May 25, at historic Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama .

Bethune-Cookman enters the title game as the No. 1 seed, boasting a 24–5 conference record. The Wildcats have demonstrated resilience throughout the tournament, including a dramatic 8–7 extra-inning victory over Alabama State to secure their spot in the final . Under the leadership of head coach Jonathan Hernandez, Bethune-Cookman aims to add another championship to its storied baseball history.

FAMU, the No. 2 seed with a 24–6 conference record, has showcased its offensive prowess in the tournament. The Rattlers advanced to the championship game after a decisive 9–1 victory over Grambling State in the semifinals. FAMU’s lineup has been bolstered by standout performances from All-SWAC selections, contributing to its impressive run.

This championship game not only determines the SWAC title but also carries significant implications for HBCU baseball, as the winner secures an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. The matchup rekindles a fierce rivalry between FAMU and Bethune-Cookman, adding another chapter to their storied history.

SWAC Championship game will be high stakes

Fans can expect a competitive and high-stakes game as these two teams vie for conference supremacy. The 2025 SWAC Baseball Championship promises to be a showcase of talent, determination, and the rich tradition of HBCU baseball.

For the uninformed, the initial rounds of the SWAC tournament feature two separate double-elimination brackets, each comprising four teams. Teams are seeded based on their regular-season performance, with the top four finishers from each division qualifying for the tournament. Within these brackets, a team must lose two games to be eliminated, allowing for a potential recovery from an early loss.

However, the culmination of the tournament—the championship game—is a single-elimination matchup between the winners of the two brackets. This means that regardless of a team’s performance in the earlier rounds, the title is decided in one decisive game. This format adds a layer of intensity and finality to the championship, as there is no opportunity for redemption in the final.

Former South Carolina State and Florida International quarterback Amari Jones will begin the next chapter of his HBCU football career at Bethune-Cookman, he announced Saturday on social media.

Jones’s commitment to BC comes after he signed with the MEAC champion South Carolina State Bulldogs in January with the expectation of becoming SCSU’s next marquee quarterback in the departure of standout signal caller Eric Phoenix. Instead of leading the Bulldogs’ offense under second-year football coach Chennis Berry, Jones will seek to become the lead man under center in the Wildcats’ offense.

FBS to MEAC to SWAC

“God’s body! He makes no mistakes! Work time,” Jones wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback spent two seasons at FIU. Last season, Jones threw for 101 yards and tossed one touchdown in a reserved role for a Panthers’ team that finished 4-8 and 3-5 in Conference USA action.

Jones joins a BC team that finished 2-10 overall and 2-6 in SWAC play in the 2024 campaign under Wildcats football coach Raymond Woodie Jr. Last season, quarterbacks Cam’Ron Ransom and Luke Sprague led Bethune-Cookman’s offense, with Ransom handling an overwhelming majority of the snaps.

HBCU Amari Jones Bethune-Cookman

Ransom finished the season with 1,844 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions while rushing for 163 yards on 106 attempts and five touchdowns on the ground in 11 games. As an offensive unit, Sprague amassed 336 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in five games last season. BC finished next to last in scoring offense (20.2 ppg) and rush offense (105.4 ypg), ninth in total offense (290.2), and eighth in pass offense (184.8) per game in the 2024 season.

Amari Jones’ arrival in Daytona Beach, Florida, could be the spark needed for Woodie’s offense in the 2025 season. Bethune-Cookman will begin the 2025 HBCU football season on the road against FIU on Aug. 29 in Miami. Setting up a potential revenge match with the quarterback’s former FBS team.

Sanford, FL – Five years ago, it was the top HBCU baseball rivalry in the MEAC. Now it has returned to the peak of relevance in the SWAC. When Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University (FAMU) face off in baseball, it has had a significant impact on conference standings for the last 20 years.

This past weekend was no different. The Wildcats and Rattlers were sitting atop the SWAC baseball standings, with a weekend series being crucial to winning the regular season title, as just a month remained before the SWAC Championship tournament.

Bethune-Cookman’s offense was relentless on a “chamber of commerce” weekend in Sanford, FL, just a few miles from Daytona Beach. Historic Sanford Stadium is a pristine park where legendary Jackie Robinson once played, before heading to Daytona Beach.

Sweep with Style

B-CU made a clean sweep of the Rattlers and did it with flair. The bats for the Wildcats would batter FAMU pitching. Bethune rattled off wins of 8-2, 5-2, and 9-2 to glide away from the Rattlers atop the conference.

B-CU coach Jonathan Hernandez

B-CU head coach Johnny Hernandez feels his team is playing really well right now, in this critical time heading into the SWAC tournament. “Overall, it was a good complete series for our guys. I think this is the first series in the entire year where we had pitching, defense, and the offense executed in different ways,” Hernandez said. “With the long ball, with situational hitting, and with two-out hitting. Just proud of our guys for the grit to complete the sweep over FAMU.”

The Rattlers and Wildcats entered the series with only two conference losses, both having identical conference records of 13-2. B-CU now sits atop alone at 16-2 while the Rattlers slip into a tie for second place at 13-5 with Texas Southern and Grambling. The Alabama State Hornets sit just one game behind them with a 12-5 conference record.

There is about a month remaining in the HBCU baseball regular season before SWAC teams head to Birmingham, Ala. For the 2025 SWAC Championship Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for May 21-25 at Rickwood Field. Historic Rickwood Field is said to be America’s oldest ballpark and was one of the parks used in the Negro League.

When Jackson State tips off against Bethune-Cookman on Friday night at the SWAC Tournament in Atlanta both HBCU schools will feature coaches who were once NBA All-Stars. JSU is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and its coached by Mo Williams, who made the NBA All-Star team in 2009 while playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the opposing bench for the No. 3 seed Bethune-Cookman is Reggie Theus, an NBA All-Star in 1981 with the Chicago Bulls, and in 1983 with the Kansas City Kings.

Williams and Theus make up two of the 19 head coaches in Division One basketball who once played in the NBA. Both coaches are one win away from appearing in the SWAC Championship game after impressive regular season efforts. The two are the only former NBA players who are Division I HBCU basketball head coaches.

Mo Williams led JSU to a 14-4 record in the SWAC this season including two wins over Bethune-Cookman. Reggie Theus has improved Bethune-Cookman’s conference record in each of his four seasons at the helm in Daytona Beach. Bethune-Cookman finished just behind the Tigers with a 13-5 conference record.

Both teams are the two hottest teams in the SWAC heading into Friday’s game. Jackson State is riding a seven-game winning streak, while BCU has won six in a row.

The Tigers are led by former McDonald’s All-American Daeshun Ruffin, a transfer from Ole Miss. The junior guard averages 15.6 points per game, fourth in the SWAC. The inside is bolstered by All-SWAC second team selection Shannon Grant. The FAMU transfer averages 11 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

For Bethune-Cookman the offense runs through All-SWAC first team selection Trey Thomas. The Hampton transfer has scored 525 total points this season, the most of any player, and his scoring average is third at 16.4 points per game.

Thomas struggled from the field in BCU’s opening game against Alcorn State but his teammates filled the void throughout the game. Brayon Freeman led the Wildcats in scoring off the bench on Thursday scoring 19 off the bench in the 69-60 win over Alcorn State.

Jackson State won its opening-round game against Florida A&M, 91-76. Friday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN+ at 8:30 pm EST.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman Football is set to begin its third season of the Raymond Woodie Jr. era with a challenging 2025 football schedule that includes five home contests at Daytona Stadium, six away games, concluding with the annual Florida Blue Florida Classic matchup against its fiercest HBCU football rival, the Florida A&M Rattlers.

The Wildcats will open the 2025 football schedule on August 30 at Pitbull Stadium against Florida International. The last matchup between the Wildcats and the Panthers occurred in 2014 when B-CU claimed a 14-12 win over the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent – the second of its kind in as many years against the Panthers. The Panthers are looking for a fresh start under new head coach Willie Simmons. Before spending the 2024 season as an assistant coach at Duke, Simmons spent six years (2018-23) at the helm of Florida A&M, where he owned a record of 45-13 overall, culminating with a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and Cricket Celebration Bowl title in 2023.

Week two sees the Wildcats return to Miami for the second time in as many weeks. They will take on the University of Miami in what will be the eighth installment of the series against the Hurricanes since 2011. The last time the Wildcats played the Hurricanes was in 2023.

Bethune-Cookman stays on the road in week three for a trip to the “Palmetto State”—facing an old HBCU foe in the form of South Carolina State for the first time since 2022. B-CU has a storied history with former conference mate South Carolina State, dating back to their time in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The teams have played 58 times since 1959, with SCSU owning a 34-24 edge all-time.

Schedule breakdown

The 2025 home opener is set for Saturday, Sept. 20, against the Tigers of Edward Waters. The last time the Wildcats faced off against EWU was back in 2010, ending in a 70-10 win for the Wildcats at home.

The Cats open SWAC play the following week, hosting the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M. Bethune-Cookman claimed a 31-14 win over AAMU in the Bulldogs’ last trip to Daytona Stadium in 2023.

After a bye week, B-CU plays seven consecutive weekends to close the campaign, beginning with a visit to Alabama State (October 4).

On October 11, Southern (La.) will come to Daytona Beach for the first time since 1988 when the Jaguars descend upon Daytona Stadium. Last season, the two teams participated in the second-longest game in Wildcats history—a five-overtime thriller that saw the Cats fall 25-23 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Homecoming 2025 features Bethune-Cookman hosting Arkansas-Pine Bluff (October 25) to Daytona Beach for the first time as a member of the SWAC and the first time since 2005, when the Cats downed the Golden Lions, 31-17.

B-CU opens the month of November with a visit from Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 1) and new head coach Terrell Buckley. The Wildcats have won three consecutive contests against the Delta Devils, with a pair of victories coming on the road in Itta Bena, Mississippi, including last year’s 20-10 triumph on an MVSU Homecoming weekend.

The HBCU football season concludes with trips to Grambling State (November 8) and defending SWAC and Cricket Celebration Bowl champion Jackson State (November 15). The Florida Blue Florida Classic against FAMU is scheduled for November 22 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

The Panthers advance to the second round of the SWAC tournament and will face No. 2 seed Texas Southern (15-14, 14-4) on Wednesday. With 13 seconds to play in regulation, Panthers guard Nyam Thornton converted one of two free throws, giving Prairie View A&M a 45-42 advantage but leaving the door open for the Wildcats to tie the game.

Ten seconds later, Wildcats guard Daimoni Dorsey drilled a corner 3-pointer – her first of four attempts in the contest – to tie the game at 45 and force overtime inside Gateway Center Arena. However, with a spot in the second round of the HBCU women’s basketball conference tournament on the line, the Panthers took their play to higher gear behind the play of Williams and free throws from guard CJ Wilson to seal the victory.

“We’re happy to be marching on,” said Prairie View A&M head coach Sandy Pugh on the ESPN+ broadcast following the game. “I haven’t been past the opening round for a while now…We are proud to be here.”

Prairie View lost to Texas Southern twice during the HBCU hoops regular season, with the last meeting resulting in a 64-60 home loss on Saturday. However, Thornton said the Panthers are energized and ready for the third matchup against their in-state rival.

“They know what’s coming,” Thornton said. The game will begin at 11 a.m. ET.

The win marked the program’s first A-10 tournament championship and earned GMU its first trip to the women’s NCAA tournament in program history. As Blair-Lewis cut a piece of the net and celebrated with her players at Henrico Sports & Events Center, her father – Robert Blair – sat at the front of her mind.

Before establishing a winning culture at GMU, Blair-Lewis coached at Daytona-Beach, FL HBCU Bethune Cookman for 13 years and started her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Largo High School in Prince George’s County, Maryland. After Sunday’s win, Blair-Lewis devoted the championship win to her father.

“My dad is in hospice right now,” Blair-Lewis said in the postgame news conference. “I FaceTimed him before the game; he said, ‘Go win.’ He’s not just my dad. He’s my coach; he’s a big part of the DMV coaching area. I really wish he could have been here and I knew he was here in spirit. … That’s what I thought about in the last minute. This was for my dad.”

HBCU Vanessa Blair-Lewis George Mason

GMU finished the regular season – including the tournament – with 27 wins, the most in program history. Much like Blair-Lewis’ success in reviving GMU, she led Bethune Cookman to its first women’s NCAA Tournament appearance in 2019.

The four-time MEAC Coach of the Year led the Wildcats to a 196-168 record overall, produced six winning seasons, and restored a Bethune Cookman program that generated only two winning campaigns in 19 HBCU basketball seasons before she arrived in Daytona Beach, Florida.

About Vanessa Blair-Lewis

Vanessa Blair-Lewis is an accomplished basketball coach with a strong women’s college basketball track record. She began her head coaching career at Mount St. Mary’s University (1998–2007), where she led the team to multiple winning seasons and was named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 1999. She later took over as the head coach at Bethune-Cookman University (2008–2021), transforming the program into a perennial contender and securing multiple MEAC regular-season titles and a tournament championship in 2019. In 2021, Blair-Lewis became the head coach at George Mason University, continuing her leadership and player development legacy. Known for her defensive strategies and ability to rebuild programs, she remains a respected figure in women’s college basketball.

Former NBA star Reggie Theus has turned around the fortunes of the Bethune-Cookman University basketball program in his four years of leading the Daytona Beach, Florida HBCU. The coach and athletic director took over the program just before the 2021-22 season and led the Wildcats to a 7-11 record in the SWAC. He improved the conference record each of the next two seasons going 8-10 and 11-7. This season, with two games remaining, BCU will either match or surpass last year’s record. Theus, who overhauled the team in the offseason, is currently at 11-5 after Saturday night’s win over SWAC leader Southern University.

Bethune-Cookman secured a thrilling 70-69 victory over the Jaguars in Daytona Beach. The Wildcats (14-15, 11-5 SWAC) started strong with an 11-2 run, but Southern (18-10, 13-2 SWAC) battled back, briefly taking the lead before halftime. A last-second jumper by David Onanina gave B-CU a 38-37 edge at the break. Southern built a 13-point second-half lead, but Bethune-Cookman stormed back in the final minutes. Kalil Camara’s clutch offensive rebound and game-winning free throw with two seconds left sealed the upset. Camara’s heroics capped an intense comeback, handing Southern just its second SWAC loss.

Reggie Theus had a productive 13-year NBA career (1978–1991) as a dynamic shooting guard and small forward. Drafted ninth overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1978, he made an immediate impact, earning two All-Star selections (1981, 1983). Known for his scoring and playmaking, Theus averaged 18.5 points and 6.3 assists per game. He played for Chicago, Kansas City/Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, and Orlando Magic. A versatile offensive threat, he surpassed 19,000 career points. After retiring, Theus transitioned into coaching. His flashy style and scoring ability made him a fan favorite and a key contributor during his NBA tenure.

The upcoming SWAC Basketball Tournament in Atlanta will offer a homecoming for the former Atlanta Hawk. Theus played for Atlanta during the 1988-89 season and averaged 15.8 points per game. The SWAC Tournament will mark two consecutive weeks of HBCU basketball in Atlanta. The SIAC Tournament will be played at Morehouse College March 5-8. The SWAC Tournament will be at the Gateway Center Arena March 11-15.

Bethune-Cookman University has elevated Donte’ Pimpleton to the roles of Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Quarterbacks Coach for the 2025 HBCU football season.

A Proven Leader

Donte Pimpleton’s football journey began in Louisville, Kentucky, where he excelled as an all-state quarterback at Fern Creek High School. During his senior year, he set a school record with 1,551 passing yards and 18 touchdowns, complemented by over 700 rushing yards. His dual-threat capabilities laid the foundation for a successful collegiate career at Western Kentucky University (WKU).

At WKU, Pimpleton showcased versatility by playing both quarterback and wide receiver from 1997 to 2001. He amassed 1,425 rushing yards with 18 touchdowns and recorded 13 receptions for 165 yards and four touchdowns. His performance was instrumental in leading the Hilltoppers to the Ohio Valley Conference Championship in 2000. He earned honorable mention All-Gateway Conference honors in 2001.

Coaching Career

Transitioning from player to coach, Pimpleton began his coaching career in Louisville’s high school circuit before advancing to collegiate positions. His early roles included offensive quality control assistant at the University of Louisville in 2009 and wide receivers coach at WKU in 2012, where he contributed to the program’s first bowl game appearance.

Pimpleton’s coaching trajectory continued with positions at Kentucky Wesleyan College as Offensive Coordinator in 2014 and running backs coach at the University of South Florida (USF) from 2015 to 2016. He developed a formidable running back unit at USF that ranked second nationally with an average of 6.51 yards per carry. His mentorship was pivotal in the growth of Marlon Mack, who set multiple school records under Pimpleton’s guidance.

Furthering his career, Pimpleton served as running backs coach at the University of Oregon in 2017 and Florida State University in 2018 and 2019. At Florida State, he coached Cam Akers, who achieved consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and was subsequently drafted into the NFL.

Before his current tenure at Bethune-Cookman. Pimpleton was part of the coaching staff at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2022. He coached Larry McCammon to a 1,000-yard season there, marking the first such achievement for an FAU running back since 2018.

Impact on Bethune-Cookman

Since joining Bethune-Cookman University, Pimpleton has been instrumental in enhancing the team’s offensive strategies. His promotion to Assistant Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator, and Quarterbacks Coach is a testament to his expertise and the positive influence he has had on the program. As he steps into these expanded roles, Pimpleton is poised to lead the Wildcats to new heights, further solidifying Bethune-Cookman’s standing in HBCU football.

In his first two years in HBCU football at Bethune-Cookman, Pimpleton served as Co-Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs coach. The Wildcats turned in the conference’s sixth-best offensive efficiency mark in 2024, as well as coaching one of Bethune-Cookman’s best freshman running backs in a decade in the form of Daniel Palmer (706 yards / 5 TDs).

The 2023 squad was the least penalized team in program history, leading the SWAC in that department. Also, in 2023, Jimmy Robinson III finished ninth in the league in rushing (51.8 yards per game).

Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) is set to receive a significant boost to its athletics program as USTA Florida presents the HBCU with a $100,000 check on Friday, Feb. 28. The funding will go toward constructing the Wildcats’ first on-campus tennis courts, a major milestone for the school’s student-athletes and tennis program. BCU currently has a women’s team that competes in the SWAC, the University does not have a men’s program.

The check presentation will take place at 4:30 p.m. at the Bethune-Cookman Performing Arts Center, located at 698 W. International Speedway Blvd. in Daytona Beach, Florida. University administrators will be in attendance to accept the contribution, while a USTA Florida representative will highlight the importance of this investment in the university’s athletic future.

For Bethune-Cookman, this funding represents a transformative step forward in expanding its athletic facilities and creating new opportunities for students. Without dedicated on-campus courts, the Wildcats’ tennis teams have had to train and compete off-site, presenting logistical challenges and limiting student engagement with the program. With these new courts, B-CU aims to enhance recruitment efforts, improve player development, and strengthen its championship culture.

The USTA’s investment underscores its commitment to fostering tennis at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By funding new facilities at B-CU, the organization is helping to promote the sport at a grassroots level and provide young athletes with the resources they need to compete at a high level.

Friday’s event will provide a valuable opportunity to speak with university officials about how the new courts will impact student-athletes and the broader campus community. Additionally, attendees will hear from USTA Florida on why supporting HBCU tennis programs is an essential part of growing the sport nationwide.

The BCU women’s team fielded a doubles team and two singles players in this year’s edition of the HBCU National Championships which was held in September in Atlanta. The team also participated in the SWAC Fall Tournament in October before the season resumed with the winter portion of the schedule in January. The season concludes in April with the SWAC Championship in New Orleans.

This donation follows an earlier $100,000 donation this month in the HBCU tennis community. Tennis champion Coco Gauff donated the money to the UNCF to provide scholarships for HBCU students playing competitive tennis.

Two legendary figures who now lead HBCU programs are finalists for induction into the prestigious 2025 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class. Bridgette Gordon, head coach of Florida A&M University’s women’s basketball team, and Reggie Theus, head coach and athletic director at Bethune-Cookman University, have both achieved remarkable success as players and continue to leave their mark on the game through their leadership at HBCUs.

Gordon, one of the most decorated players in women’s basketball history, has been a transformative figure at Florida A&M. Before stepping into coaching, she was a dominant force on the court, winning two NCAA championships with the University of Tennessee and earning MVP honors in the 1989 Final Four. Gordon’s stellar collegiate career paved the way for her selection to the U.S. Women’s Olympic Basketball Team in 1988, where she won a gold medal. Her induction into the Hall of Fame would highlight her ongoing commitment to the sport, particularly at HBCUs, where she works to uplift and inspire young women through basketball.

FAMU, Gordon, HBCU

On the men’s side, Reggie Theus brings similar star power and leadership to HBCU Bethune-Cookman University. Known for his dazzling playmaking ability, Theus had a storied career in the NBA, playing 13 seasons and earning two All-Star selections. He also starred at UNLV, where his dynamic scoring helped make the program a national powerhouse. As a coach, Theus has brought his extensive basketball knowledge to HBCUs, emphasizing the importance of both athletic and academic excellence for his student-athletes. His dual role as head coach and athletic director demonstrates his dedication to strengthening Bethune-Cookman’s athletic program as a whole.

The potential induction of Gordon and Theus would be a historic moment for HBCUs, shining a spotlight on their willingness to help increase diversity in the coaching ranks via legends. Both coaches have not only cemented their legacies as players but also as leaders, continuing to inspire the next generation of athletes at historically Black colleges and universities. Their recognition would underscore the vital role HBCUs play in shaping the fabric of basketball history.

TAMPA, FL– The University of South Florida only led for a total of 28 seconds as Daytona Beach, FL HBCU Bethune-Cookman upset the American Conference opponent on the road, 77-69, Wednesday night at the Yuengling Center. It is the first win over South Florida for the Wildcats since 2005. The victory was punctuated by a monster dunk that made ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays.

The Wildcats (3-8) raced out to a 7-0 lead immediately thanks to five early points by Reggie Ward Jr. The Bulls (5-6) caught up with a Jimmie Williams layup at the 10-minute mark that made it 14-10, B-CU, but a missed USF three turned into a fast break dunk by Ward to bring the HBCU program’s lead back up to nine at 21-12.

The offenses slowed a bit for each team, but three-pointers down the stretch from Trey Thomas and Seneca Willoughby kept the Cats in front as they headed into halftime up 32-29. Neither side shot better than 40 percent in the first half, but a B-CU’s 4-7 mark from three was the difference over just 2-12 from deep for the Bulls.

A quick Bulls three, followed by a steal and dunk by Jamille Reynolds trimmed the Wildcat lead to just one at 35-34 two minutes into the second half. A USF three by Jayden Reid gave the Bulls their first – and only – lead of the night at 37-35, but B-CU took that bucket back as Ward’s fastbreak layup made it 37-all.

From there, the Wildcats ran up an 11-1 run, closed out by 8 straight from Thomas, to go in front, 48-37 with 14 minutes to play. USF would come as close as 58-54 with eight to go, but an emphatic dunk by Ward put an exclamation point on a dominant second half that saw the Wildcats cruise to the 77-69 win and put HBCU hoops on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays as Ward’s dunk came in at No. 7 on the top 10 countdown.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats avoid a winless season at home with a 14-point HBCU football comeback to pull the upset win over Grambling State, 24-21, on Saturday afternoon on senior day at Daytona Stadium. With the win, the Wildcats jump Alabama A&M for the fourth-place spot in the SWAC East standings at 2-3 in conference play.

Grambling State (4-5, 1-4 SWAC) won the toss, electing to defer, handing the ball to Bethune-Cookman out of the gate. The opening drives for both squads stalled before B-CU starting quarterback Luke Sprague was forced out of the game with an injury following a second-and-20 sack that forced the senior to limp off the field. He would not return to the game.

The Tigers jumped on the board first after a 39-yard pass play set up a 22-yard rushing score by Keilon Elder. The HBCU Wildcats (2-7, 2-3 SWAC), now under the leadership of Cam’Ron Ransom at QB, managed another short drive before punting it away once more to end the first quarter of play. The Tigers opened the second quarter with another drive deep into Bethune-Cookman territory, marching all the way down to the B-CU two-yard line. A fourth-and-one run play was quickly snuffed out by a host of Wildcats, forcing a turnover on downs.

As the Wildcats offense continued to struggle before an Anthony Frederique punt turned into a 72-yard house call by Javon Robinson that put Grambling in front 14-0 with six minutes until the half. B-CU was finally able to answer the Tiger attack as Ransom marched the Cats down the field on eight plays, finding tight end Thomas Nance for a 14-yard score – the first of Nance’s career as a Wildcat and the first touchdown to a tight end on the year for B-CU – to send B-CU into the half down only a score at 14-7.

Grambling, receiving the ball out of the half, immediately went up two scores again on a nine-yard rushing score from Deljay Bailey to make it 21-7. The B-CU offense found some success again as Cade Hechter connected on a 40-yard field goal to inch closer at 21-10 in the HBCU football contest.

HBCU Bethune-Cookman SWAC Grambling

The Bethune-Cookmandefense stepped up for another massive fourth-down stop with just under seven to play in the third, as a QB keeper was snuffed out by Dallaz Corbitt and Earl Miller Jr. to give the Cats the ball at their own 40. Ransom made the Tigers pay immediately, finding dynamic return man Darnell Deas for a 58-yard bomb to inch the Wildcats to within 21-14 with three minutes to play in the third.

After another great defensive sequence, B-CU moved in front for the first time on the afternoon one drive later as freshman rusher Dennis Palmer found a huge hole in the Tiger front for a 42-yard touchdown run that put the Cats up, 24-21. Grambling State opened the fourth with a three-and-out, following it up with a drive down to the Bethune-Cookman 39 before a Baily pass found Wildcat hands as nickelback Caleb Blake came up with the ball, his first HBCU football interception as a Wildcat.

The Wildcats moved to the Tiger 21-yard line before attempting a 21-yard field goal that was blocked to keep Grambling to within a field goal with 1:50 on the clock. A fourth-down pass interference call kept the Tigers alive at their own 36 with 1:37 to play, but an Orin Patu sack and a pair of incomplete passes quickly brought up fourth down again. With 20 yards to go for the first, Baily looked downfield, and B-CU’s Joshua Thornhill came up with the Cats’ second pick of the night to ice the SWAC win at 24-21.

On November 23 in Camping World Stadium, for 60 minutes the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats and Florida A&M (FAMU) Rattlers will square off in their annual rivalry that is one of the most bitter rivalries anywhere, aptly titled, the Florida Blue Florida Classic. When James Colzie III and Raymond Woodie Sr. march their squads onto the turf all gloves are off. It’s a must-win situation as the very psyche of the alumni, friends, and family of each school rests on the outcome of the Florida Blue Florida Classic (FBFC).

This year is no different. While Florida A&M has had quite an interrupted season with three off weeks so far and a game scheduled for after the FBFC and Bethune-Cookman hasn’t had the season they expected, none of that matters when that coin goes up, the ball is placed on the tee, and the pigskin is hurled through the air.

The fans battle, the bands battle, families battle…it’s all-out war for those 60 minutes.

However, right before kickoff and right after kickoff, FAMU and Bethune-Cookman are family. The universities partner for academic success. When former FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson returned to FAMU after serving President Barack Obama on the NOAA staff, they shared parts of the $30 million grant he brought home with B-CU. There is a pipeline to allow B-CU students entry into the FAMU College of Law. There are several collaborations that extend beyond being business partners in the biggest institution-owned HBCU football classic in the world.

The classic is organized by the administration of both schools

B-CU and FAMU administrations combine with Florida Citrus Sports to form the Florida Classic Consortium. That unit makes all of the decisions about the game and all official ancillary events associated with Florida Classic Week. The consortium represents major parts of the universities as although it is a football game that draws the people to Central Florida, there are a week of events that involve students, alumni, friends and fans.

There is a job fair, massive recruiting by both institutions, receptions, breakfasts, conferences and much more arranged by each school to capitalize off the influx of people who have traveled to Orlando.

The marching bands have their own showcase

On Friday, Nov. 22, Dr. Donovan Wells will display his Marching Wildcats and Dr. Shelby Chipman will do the same with his Marching “100.” They square up at the Amway Center for one of the largest battle of the band showcases in the country. High schools from all over the country flock to perform in the structured battle. It’s a critical function for Wells and Chipman as their fight for the best instrumentalists goes as deep as the scuffle for the best football players.

The FBFC halftime show is the one time everyone at the Florida Blue Florida Classic is sitting still. There is banter throughout the game and fraternizing under the stands during the football portion. But, once the first 30 minutes of football are played, all attention is on midfield as the entrance of the drum majors leading two of the best bands in the entire country for a show that never disappoints.

Florida A&M Vice President and Director of Athletics Angela Suggs, far right, and 220 Quarterback Club CEO Dr. Jerrlyne Jackson, left, embrace B-CU head women’s volleyball coach Brittany Williams at a social for the players following their matches on Sunday in Tallahassee at The Lawson Center,

FAMU lends a hand in a time of need

Daytona Beach was flooded last week in the wake of hurricane Milton. Ahead of the storm, the B-CU volleyball team evacuated to Tallahassee as they had a mid-week game against the Rattlers.

With campus still uninhabitable, the Rattlers and Wildcats consulted with the SWAC and decided to host their home games for Oct. 13 and 14 in FAMU’s Lawson Center.

FAMU Vice President and Director of Athletics and her staff organized a dual home hosting for Sunday and Monday. Southern University and Alcorn University would remain in Tallahassee as well, as opposed to their scheduled travel to Daytona Beach.

FAMU pulled out all stops to make it feel like a B-CU home game, besides the obvious orange and green of the Lawson Center arena. The B-CU hype video was played and the team anthem “Let’s Go Wildcats” blared through the Lawson Center speakers as B-CU was introduced. It’s something you would never expect from rivals, but FAMU and B-CU are so intertwined that it was what had to be done.

Again, that attitude will not exist for those 60 minutes on Nov. 23 at Camping World Stadium. The Florida Blue Florida Classic will be decided on the field and not before. Numerous times the team highly-expected to win the game has gone down in defeat. In the words of former NFL coach Herman Edwards “That’s why they play the game.”

In a thrilling comeback victory, Clark Atlanta University (CAU) shocked SWAC opponent Bethune-Cookman University (BCU) with a 55-yard game-winning field goal by Leonardo Cabrera as time expired, capping a 38-37 victory. The Wildcats (0-4) jumped out to a dominant early lead, but the Panthers (3-0-1) clawed their way back in one of the most dramatic finishes of the season. The win also puts a huge feather in the cap for the SIAC, who once again has another year with a football win versus the SWAC.

First Quarter – Bethune-Cookman Dominates Early

Bethune-Cookman opened the game in explosive fashion. Quarterback Cam Ransom connected with Courtney Reese for a 29-yard touchdown to cap off a 71-yard drive, giving BCU a 7-0 lead with 10:27 remaining in the first quarter. Just two minutes later, Ransom added to the lead with a 7-yard rushing touchdown, making it 14-0 after a short 7-yard drive set up by a CAU turnover.

The Wildcats kept rolling, as Ransom found Darnell Deas for a 70-yard touchdown pass with 4:25 left in the first quarter, pushing the score to 21-0. Clark Atlanta finally responded with a touchdown of their own when David Wright III connected with David Martin for an 11-yard score, cutting the deficit to 21-7.However, BCU wasn’t done. Ransom threw his third touchdown of the quarter, this time a 54-yard bomb to Kobe Stewart with just five seconds left in the period, extending the lead to 28-7.

Second Quarter – Clark Atlanta Begins to Fight Back

BCU added to their lead early in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal from Cade Hechter, pushing the Wildcats’ advantage to 31-7.

Clark Atlanta responded with a sustained drive, marching 89 yards in 15 plays. Wide receiver Armone Harris threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Delancey Tolliver, narrowing the gap to 31-14 with 1:47 left in the half. But BCU quickly drove down the field, setting up another Hechter field goal, this one from 27 yards, as time expired to give the Wildcats a 34-14 lead at halftime.

Third Quarter – The Panthers Mount a Comeback

The second half saw Clark Atlanta begin their dramatic comeback. Early in the third quarter, Wright III led the Panthers on a 98-yard drive, culminating in a 28-yard touchdown pass to Harris, making the score 34-21. On their next possession, Wright III engineered another long drive, this time covering 99 yards, and connected with Harris again for a 27-yard touchdown. Suddenly, the Panthers were within six points, 34-28.

Bethune-Cookman briefly halted Clark Atlanta’s momentum with a 37-yard field goal by Hechter late in the third quarter, extending their lead to 37-28.

Fourth Quarter – Clark Atlanta Seals the Win

With just over four minutes remaining in the game, Clark Atlanta completed their comeback against their Division I opponent from the SWAC. Wright III delivered his fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 7-yard strike to Harris, capping off a 62-yard drive to pull the Panthers within two points at 37-35.

Bethune-Cookman tried to run out the clock, but CAU’s defense stepped up, forcing a punt and giving their offense one last chance with just over a minute left. Wright III led the Panthers down the field, setting up Cabrera for a 55-yard field goal attempt as time expired. Cabrera drilled the kick, delivering an improbable 38-37 victory for Clark Atlanta.

Key Players:

 • David Wright III (CAU): 4 passing touchdowns, including three to Armone Harris.
 • Armone Harris (CAU): 3 receiving touchdowns, crucial in the comeback effort.
 • Cam Ransom (BCU): 4 total touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing).
 • Leonardo Cabrera (CAU): Game-winning 55-yard field goal as time expired.

This win marks a significant moment for Clark Atlanta, showing incredible resilience to overcome a 21-point deficit and stun Bethune-Cookman in a game that will be remembered for Cabrera’s last-second heroics and extraordinary play from David Wright III. Bethune-Cookman is now 0-4 with SWAC play set to begin next week versus Alabama State.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Under the direction of Head Coach Reggie Theus, Bethune-Cookman Men’s Basketball announced a significant roster overhaul for the fast-approaching 2024-25 season, announcing a total of 11 new players while retaining four contributors from last year’s squad that qualified for the 2024 Ro College Basketball Invitational (CBI) in Daytona Beach, Florida. It marked the second postseason berth for the Wildcats in program history, and the first since 2011, when B-CU participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

Head Coach Reggie Theus, who also serves as the university’s athletics director, has assembled a diverse group of talent, blending together experienced transfers who look to bolster the Wildcats’ lineup.

Theus expressed optimism about the team’s potential for the upcoming year, hoping to stem from last year’s success both in and out of the conference.

“We’ve brought in a mix of experience and young talent that we believe will elevate our program,” commented Theus. “Our program has improved with each year that I have been on campus, but our goal remains the same — to build on last season’s success and compete for the SWAC championship. And I believe this crop of young men will bring exactly what we need in order to try and do just that — win a SWAC title.”

The new signings include the following:

 • Brayon Freeman, a 6-foot-2 guard from Washington D.C., transfers from Coastal Carolina. The three-level scorer averaged 7.0 points this past season after stints at Rhode Island (14.3 PPG in 22-23) and George Washington (10.3 PPG in 21-22).
 • Gianni Hunt, a 6-foot-4 graduate student transferring in from CSUN, is a versatile point guard that started 21 games last season for the Matadors, averaging 10.2 points per game, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists across the campaign. The leader on the floor brings real Division I experience to B-CU, led by a solid foundation defensively.
 • Trey Thomas, a 6-foot-2 guard from Washington, D.C., transfers from Hampton University (6.6 points per game in 23-24), bringing a scoring threat with experience, leadership, and a hyper-competitive spirit to the backcourt.
 • Antwann Jones, a 6-foot-6 athletic scoring wing originally from Orlando, brings Power Five experience after playing at UCF this past season (4.3 points per game) along with Memphis, Creighton, and Louisiana, respectively. Jones is a matchup nightmare who has the ability to play multiple positions on either side of the ball.
 • Kalil Camara, a 6-foot-7 forward transferring in from West Virginia State, arrives as a graduate student with size out of the Bronx, New York. In addition to his length, Camara shot 46.1 percent from beyond the arc this past season.
 • Jarrell Love, a 6-foot-7 athletic forward from Fort Worth, Texas, transfers from Baton Rouge CC where showcased his versatility with 10.8 points per game and 5.3 rebounds at the JUCO level.
 • William Gonzalez, a 6-foot-5 small forward from Chicago, brings great upside with his shooting as he arrives as a freshman from Curie High where he turned in double-digits scoring average as a senior.
 • Jesus Carralero-Martin, a 6-foot-7 Spanish forward, joins after stints at Campbell (10.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 22-23) and most recently Missouri. The point forward brings an understanding of the game with the ability to contribute in a number of ways with his scoring, passing, and basketball IQ.
 • Daniel Rouzan, a 6-foot-8 junior forward from Las Vegas, is a back to the basket and face-up threat that arrives to Daytona Beach from Manhattan College, where he played and started in 27 games a season ago averaging 11.4 points per game with 4.6 rebounds while shooting 52.7 percent from the field. His ability to contribute from multiple positions adds another level of versatility to the floor for B-CU.
 • Jerome Beya, a 6-foot-9 five-man from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, transferring in from Tennessee Tech, brings international experience and shot-blocking ability to the frontcourt. The hyper-athletic Beya also adds a talented lob threat to the Wildcats arsenal.
 • David Onanina, a 6-foot-8 center from Yaoundé, Cameroon, is transferring into Bethune-Cookman from Eastern Kentucky after two seasons with the program, adding height and rebounding ability on the inside. The strong, athletic Onanina also brings an excellent touch around the rim for a big man.

Bethune-Cookman basketball also returns senior guard Reggie Ward Jr., after the Chicago native amassed 9.6 points per game last year, arriving from Riverside CC. It will be a reunion, of sorts, with incoming freshman Gonzalez from their days at Curie High. Seneca Willoughby, a rising junior from Philadelphia, also returns to the Wildcats backcourt, along with Simeon WomackMason Dorsey also returns for the Maroon and Gold, as the 6-foot-5 guard from Los Angeles saw limited time as a true freshman in 2023-24.

Reggie Theus and Wildcat basketball aim to improve upon their performance from the previous season, where they secured a spot in the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament for the first time in school history.

“We entered the offseason tasked with essentially retooling our entire roster,” Reggie Theus said. “Our staff has worked incredibly hard to address a number of different areas this summer, and I think we have been able to bring in what we need in these key areas. The opportunity to coach this team with the talent we’ve brought in, it’s exciting to think about, and I can’t wait to get out on the court with these guys.”

Former Miami football stars Ederrgin James and Ed Reed sat down for a podcast episode, and Reed’s brief stint at an HBCU was a topic of discussion.

Reed, the Hall of Fame safety, attempted to clear the air about his short stint as the coach-in-waiting at Bethune-Cookman University. He did so with his former Miami football teammate and fellow Pro Football Hall of Famer on the “Create The Life Podcast.”

“I was to be the coach – I was never the coach,” Reed said of the few weeks in late 2022/early 2023. “I never signed a contract. I never got fired like everybody said.”

Reed talked about how he planned to get his program running. He said he realized that football culture involves ‘farming’ – meaning that some players will leave the program with success. He said it was something he was prepared for, and was ready to prepare his players for.

“I told those kids – if someone come there and get you from Power Five – man go! I want you to go!”

Ed Reed

Ed Reed claims there was an agenda amongst the administration at the Daytona, FL-based HBCU, claiming that there were ‘moles’ enlisted to report back to higher ups. He also spoke about the president of the school at the time being gone to a different school, and interjected that the would take that university down as well.

“They recycle bad coaches. They just put ‘em somewhere else,” Reed said. “They recycle bad administrations and put them somewhere else and they do the same stuff,” Reed told Ederrgin James.

Edgerrin James’ son is a running back at an HBCU. Eden James is headed into his third season as a running back at Howard University. James explained his approach to having his son play at an HBCU after having gone the Power Five route.

“It’s different – but you have to go into it with the mindset and the purpose. Because if you don’t stand on purpose and the reason why you’re here – you’re going to find all the negatives. But we’re committed to being an example or being where we can make things better – but also – not shortchanging ourself.”

The two former Miami teammates talked about people who were planning on investing in the school, and the surrounding area, during Reed’s short stint.

“I was actually going to purchase a building on the campus because you were there,” James said. “I was actually looking forward to supporting the situation…”

Bethune-Cookman officials eventually rescinded the offer for Ed Reed, ultimately hiring Ray Woodie Jr. as head coach.

“I get a call on a Tuesday from coach (Prime), to go coach at the school he left (Jackson State) before he came here (Colorado). I said ‘I would, man, but I got a call yesterday from another school,” Reed told the football squad in a speech filmed by Thee Pregame Show.

Of course, Ed Reed would accept the job at Bethune-Cookman, but it would be short-lived as he would be dismissed before signing a contract. Reed recounted his version of the story for the players, including the players who committed to playing for him at the HBCU. One of those players was quarterback Dominiq Ponder who redshirted at Bethune-Cookman last year.

Ponder is now a backup quarterback for Deion Sanders at Colorado football.

“You never know where God’s gonna take your life, young men!” Reed told the players.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Under the direction of second-year head coach Raymond Woodie Jr., Bethune-Cookman Football went through more than 60 plays Saturday afternoon in the team’s second scrimmage to close fall camp at Daytona Municipal Stadium.

“I saw so much improvement from last weekend, and that’s what I am thrilled about with today’s scrimmage,” said Coach Woodie afterwards. “Guys were ready to play, ready to work, ready to hit. Everyone we put in for any situation, they embraced it and used the opportunity to his advantage.”

The scrimmage began with drives starting 70 yards from the end zone with five different quarterbacks stepping under center for the Maroon and Gold. Returning signal callers Tylik Bethea and Luke Sprague took turns at the start, while transfer Micah Bowens from Charlotte saw action as well.

Sprague connected with running back Terry Lindsey out of the backfield for a big 23-yard gain, while newcomer Cross Patton — a highly-touted running back transferring in from Oregon, had a number of big runs for the Wildcats. The former Ducks tailback broke off a 27-yard gain early-on, before tacking on a touchdown with a 10-yard run on the right side in red zone situation. He came back just before the end of the scrimmage with a 32-yard gain down the left sideline — the longest run from scrimmage on the afternoon.

Terry Lindsey added a five-yard score up the middle with a huge push from the offensive line.

“It’s all about execution, and doing things the right way,” remarked Woodie. “The right way is handling your business. Walter Simmons went through about 70 assignments in two days, and that’s how you handle your business. No excuses, and just grinding for the team in every capacity.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the defensive line was able to get to the quarterbacks seven times for sacks. A touchdown-saving deflection on a pass in the back of the end zone from Tylik Bethea capped that defensive drive.

Earlier in the day, transfer Terrance Alexander picked off Sprague on a rollout.

In special teams action, Cade Hechter connected on a 40-yard field goal down the middle for a score.

“This coaching staff continues to work hard every day making sure we understand where we need to be on every down, every play,” said Woodie. “Hard work. It’s all about attention to details, hard work, and as I always say — making sure we get better by one percent every day.”

William Roberts Jr., son of rapper Rick Ross and Tia Kemp, committed to play football at an HBCU.

His mother, Tia Kemp, recently posted a message to Roberts via social media telling him that his father needed to take care of a sizable bill. The highlighted a bill of $209,931.58 as he prepares to start at Bethune-Cookman University.

“I ain’t playing,” Tia Kemp stated via TikTok. “I need you to call your daddy right now. You tell him. You screenshot this right now, that right there and you tell him that’s how much I need in my bank account.”

The bill appears to be for equipment for the team – not for tuition.

Kemp and Rick Ross’ tumultuous relationship has included several public spats in recent months – including one over the ending of Ross having to pay child support last month.

Roberts III played his high school ball at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He began getting offers back in 2021. Miami, Syracuse, Florida International, Texas A&M, Colorado, and Albany State all offered him as a freshman.

The 6-foot-2 270-pound Offensive lineman chose the Daytona Beach HBCU over Power 5 offers from Colorado, Marshall, Florida International, and Miami.

William Roberts III’s High School St. Thomas Aquinas is known for not only being one of the top schools in the country in football but is one of the top NFL-producing high schools as well.

HBCU Gameday reached out to Bethune-Cookman, but officials declined to confirm whether or not he is on scholarship.

Charleston White is known online for his controversial views – but he recently had one that was just straight up-wrong about an HBCU.

While speaking on “The Danza Project,” White got on the subject of Bethune Cookman University and its alleged lack of ability to launch players in to the NFL.

“Bethune College is like a special ed HBCU,” Charleston White said. “Ain’t no muth****in’ college you jump up and say ‘say that boy going to the NFL. Nowhere in the history of Bethune College have anybody made it to the NFL.

Well, besides the fact that the school has not ever been named “Bethune College” – it was once known as Bethune-Cookman College – he was also dead wrong about the Bethune-Cookman alumni in the NFL.

A total of 40 players, according to Football Reference, have played in the NFL. Thirty-two of them have been drafted. One of them, Larry Little, is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Larry Little gets street named after him in Overtown, HBCU

Who is Charleston White

Charleston White is a social media personality, community activist, and speaker known for his outspoken and often controversial views on social issues, particularly those affecting the African American community. Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, White has gained significant attention for his candid commentary on topics such as crime, gang culture, and the challenges faced by young people in urban environments. His background includes a troubled youth and time spent in the criminal justice system, experiences that have deeply informed his perspectives and fueled his passion for advocacy.

Charleston White’s platform is marked by his raw and unfiltered delivery, which he attempts to use to challenge norms and provoke thought among his followers. He often shares personal anecdotes and insights, aiming to inspire others to make positive changes in their lives and communities. While his approach has garnered both praise and criticism, White remains a prominent voice in discussions about social reform, youth empowerment, and the impact of systemic issues on marginalized populations. His work underscores the importance of personal accountability and community involvement in addressing societal challenges.

This isn’t the first time Charleston White has had something to say about HBCUs. He spoke about Deion Sander’s departure from Jackson State last year.

DENMARK, S.C. — Garon Jackson, the Director of Track & Field at Daytona Beach, FL HBCU Bethune-Cookman, has been announced to the 2024 class of the Voorhees University Athletics Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place during Homecoming weekend in September. Voorhees University is a private career-oriented HBCU in Denmark, South Carolina.

Jackson, a 1999 HBCU graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, left an indelible mark on the institution’s track and field program during his tenure as a student-athlete. His exceptional performances and leadership on the track paved the way for a stellar coaching career that has spanned nearly two decades.

“This is a great honor,” said Jackson, who returned to Bethune-Cookman as the Director of Track & Field during the 2023-24 season. “God has truly blessed me and my family and continues to shine light and grace upon my family. I definitely appreciate the coaches that coached me over the years; the athletes that I’ve sowed into over the years and my college teammates that created a winning culture at Voorhees University, and those that are doing great things after graduating.”

During his time at Voorhees, Jackson competed as a middle/long distance runner for the Tigers. He still holds the Voorhees and Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) records in the 800, 1500, 5000, and 10000 meters in addition to cross country records. Jackson was the EIAC Most Valuable Runner for four years in cross country and three years in Track and Field, finishing undefeated at the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) Championships throughout his entire collegiate career.

Jackson also served as head coach at his alma mater for track & field, where he spent five years at the helm of the Tigers program. During his stint at Voorhees, Jackson produced several National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Qualifiers as well as All-Americans and an NAIA National Champion.

“I want to thank Voorhees University for taking a chance on a young man from Sumter, South Carolina, and creating a foundation in me — one that everything I am as a person is built upon,” said Jackson.

In 2020, he took the helm as track & field head coach at Claflin in his home state of South Carolina. In just three seasons, Jackson guided the Panthers to their first-ever Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship in 2023. That led to Jackson being tabbed CIAA Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year.

Jackson was named to the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.

The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Jackson will be one of five inductees in this year’s class, joining a distinguished group of alumni who have made significant contributions to athletics at Voorhees and beyond.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Bethune-Cookman University Athletic Director Reggie Theus was honored as City Champion at the inaugural Inglewood State of the City 2024, using his platform to highlight the importance of Historically Black Colleges (HBCU) in front of an impressive panel of individuals.

The event was held at the Intuit Dome, which is set to open later this summer. The presentation, hosted by Inglewood Mayor James Butts and Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, discussed the city’s growth and the major projects over the past year, including local small businesses.

Other big names highlighting the event included entertainment executive Casey Wasserman of Wasserman Media – who was largely responsible for a successful Los Angeles bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics – businessman and inventor Patrick Soon-Shiong, minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Stan Kroenke, owner of the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, and Arsenal F.C, among many other successful professional sports franchises.

Moderated by former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, others on the economic panel included former NFL offensive lineman and current CEO of tech company Cosm, Jeb Terry, Los Angeles Rams President Kevin Demoff, and Los Angeles sports radio anchor Fred Roggin.

Others honored as Community Champions included activist Mari Morales, founder of nonprofit One for All Kids, Derek Steele, of the Social Justice Learning Institute, Doris Obih, program director of ACEing Autism and CEO of the 40 Love Foundation, and fellow NBA player and coach Byron Scott.

HBCU Inglewood Reggie Theus Bethune-Cookman

Reggie Theus, recently completing his third year at the wheel of the Wildcats Department of Athletics, while also serving as Men’s Basketball Head Coach, emphasized the unique position of HBCUs in providing opportunities for students who might otherwise be overlooked by larger institutions. He cited his own experiences as a young man in Inglewood as a driving force behind his commitment to HBCU athletics.

The 13-year veteran of the NBA spoke about growing up in Inglewood, and doing something bigger than himself while growing up in a time of segregation and being one of the first black students to integrate Inglewood High School in 1972. Reggie Theus called on local businesses, alumni, and community leaders to increase their support for HBCU, stressing the institutions’ economic and cultural impact on their surrounding areas.

“HBCUs are worthy of the conversation in this country,” remarked Theus. “They give an opportunity to first generation graduates, and we have to support them. [HBCUs] need your help.”

The summit also highlighted some major events coming to Inglewood, including NBA All-Star Weekend and FIFA World Cup in 2026, Super Bowl LVI in 2027, and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

“I take on the responsibility to give back, and it’s one of the reasons why I went to Bethune-Cookman” continued Theus, a member of the first NBA All-Star Game in 1981. “I wanted to do something that was bigger than myself. And I go back to having the chance to walk at Inglewood High School and walk down Manchester [Avenue], and it’s what grew me into what I am today.

“So, I thank the city of Inglewood in raising me the right way. And Mayor Butts is such a great leader. Thank you, Inglewood, for all of your support.

The state of Florida has four HBCUs. They are all unique and have their niches in the fabric of the state. HBCU Gameday correspondent Vaughn Wilson went to campus to visit with three of those university presidents. Dr. Larry Robinson (Florida A&M University), Dr. William Berry (Interim President of Bethune-Cookman University), and Dr. A. Zachary Faison, Jr (Edward Waters University).

The three-part series will air on the first three Mondays of July. On July 1, the conversation with FAMU President Dr. Larry Robinson will kick off the series. On July 8, the interview with B-CU interim President Dr. William Berry will debut. On July 15. The series finale with Edward Waters University President Dr. A Zachary Faison, Jr. will air on July 22.

The series is about the general health, wealth, and missions of the HBCUs in Florida. The conversations go into student life, campus achievements, and the growth and sustainability of each university.

We wouldn’t be HBCU Gameday if we didn’t delve into athletics. From the reigning HBCU football national champion Rattlers to the resurgent Wildcats and the emerging Tigers, athletics in Florida’s HBCUs is a staple in the school’s images.
