Alcorn State University, a Lorman, MS-based HBCU, has received a record-setting $42 million unrestricted donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, marking the largest single gift in the university’s 154-year history. The contribution reflects Scott’s second major investment in Alcorn, following a $25 million gift in 2020, bringing her total support for the institution to $67 million.

A Transformational Gift for a Historic HBCU

“This is a historic moment for Alcorn State University as we celebrate the largest single donation in our university’s history,” said Dr. Tracy M. Cook, president of Alcorn State University. “We are immensely grateful for Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s continued investment in Alcorn, our students, and our mission to create access.”

Founded in 1871 as the nation’s oldest public historically Black land-grant university, Alcorn State has long been a pillar of educational opportunity in Mississippi and beyond. The unrestricted nature of MacKenzie Scott’s latest $42 million gift gives the university flexibility to address its most pressing needs—ranging from scholarships and faculty development to capital improvements and student success initiatives.

Building on a Legacy of Impact

Scott’s 2020 donation of $25 million helped launch new scholarships, including the Rep. Alyce Clarke Mississippi First Scholarship program, supported faculty endowments, and advanced capital projects aligned with Alcorn’s strategic plan. Her continued generosity underscores the growing confidence in Alcorn’s leadership, vision, and impact as a leading HBCU.

“Receiving another record transformational gift within five years is both a powerful affirmation of Alcorn’s impact and a charge to all Alcornites to help accelerate our work for student success, campus sustainability, and enrollment growth,” said Dr. Marcus D. Ward, senior vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the ASU Foundation.

Investing in the Future of Alcorn State

University leaders will collaborate with the ASU Foundation to strategically allocate the $42 million across initiatives that strengthen the university’s infrastructure, enhance academic programs, and expand access for future generations.

“This gift opens a new chapter for Alcorn State,” President Cook said. “We will use every dollar to support students, strengthen the university, and serve Mississippi and the nation for generations to come.”

With MacKenzie Scott’s latest contribution, Alcorn State University joins a growing list of HBCUs benefiting from her historic philanthropy—one that continues to transform the landscape of higher education and expand opportunity for Black students nationwide.

Alcorn State University has announced new security protocols at Jack Spinks–Marino Casem Stadium after a deadly homecoming shooting at the HBCU. The new measures will go into effect during this weekend’s game against Mississippi Valley State.

HBCU prioritizes safety for students and fans

According to university officials, Alcorn State is increasing the number of security personnel on duty and introducing modified procedures to ensure the safety of its campus community and visitors. The changes are designed to make game days more secure while maintaining the university’s tradition of spirited HBCU football experiences.

“The safety and well-being of our campus community remain our highest priority,” the university said in a statement. “These enhanced measures reflect our commitment to providing a secure environment for everyone attending Alcorn State athletic events.”

Updated tailgating and parking procedures

RV tailgating protocols will remain the same. Setup begins Friday, October 24, between noon and 6 p.m., and resumes Saturday, October 25, at 6 a.m. Tailgating is limited to designated areas, and Alcorn State has reminded fans that it is not responsible for items left overnight. Yellow caution tape or barricades are prohibited.

Campus parking lots open at 6 a.m. on game day, and visitors must present parking passes or use cashless payment methods — cash is no longer accepted at any entry point. The main entry gate will only allow access for General Tailgate, Reserved Tailgate, VIP, Premium, RV, and ADA parking.

General Tailgate passes will be available for $65 on-site, while Special Event and General Parking passes will cost $35. The airstrip area will be closed for this game, and vehicles with General Parking passes will be redirected to specific entrances.

Stadium entry and clear bag policy

Stadium gates will open two hours before kickoff. All guests must comply with Alcorn State’s Clear Bag Policy, which allows only transparent plastic bags up to 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. Non-clear bags should remain in vehicles to avoid delays at security checkpoints.

Alcorn State Post-game and tailgate exit rules

General parking and tailgate visitors must begin exiting the campus within one hour of the game’s conclusion. Reserved tailgate guests have up to two hours to vacate, and all vehicles and equipment must be removed upon departure. RV lots will close at noon on Sunday.

Tailgate passes are mandatory for entry into all tailgate zones. Music must maintain a family-friendly atmosphere, and vulgar lyrics are prohibited. Guests are responsible for cleaning up trash and ash properly and must not dump debris into drains or landscaping. ATVs and oversized side-by-sides remain prohibited.

HBCU transition to Cashless system and ticketing information

The transition to a cashless system for the Lorman, MS-based HBCU extends to parking and ticket sales, where all transactions require debit or credit cards. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance through the official Alcorn Athletics website.

HBCUs are turning heads this preseason with several impressive wins in what college basketball fans call a “secret scrimmage.” A secret scrimmage is a closed-door matchup between Division I programs—no fans, no media, and no official scorekeeping—that coaches use to evaluate their teams before the season begins.

Until this year, NCAA rules restricted public exhibitions to non-Division I opponents unless for charity, pushing most schools toward these private sessions. But a recent rule change now allows two full exhibitions against any four-year program, meaning secret scrimmages could soon become less secret—and more valuable for exposure, especially for HBCUs.

This month, several HBCUs showed they can hold their own. Arkansas–Pine Bluff topped Arkansas–Little Rock 77-69 in a secret scrimmage that later surfaced online. Transfer forward Jaquan Scott led the Golden Lions with 24 points, while guards Alex Mirhosseini and Quion Williams added 19 and 11, respectively—all three newcomers making strong first impressions.

Meanwhile, Alabama A&M notched a 74-73 win over Samford in a public matchup, displaying balance and experience. Alcorn State also earned a 64-59 victory over North Alabama in its own secret scrimmage, paced by returner Tycen McDaniels (20 points) and transfer Jameel Morris from FDU.

For HBCUs, these preseason contests—whether secret scrimmages or public exhibitions—offer a valuable measuring stick before the real games begin. They also showcase the depth, talent, and transfer power many HBCUs are bringing into the 2025 season. If these early results are any indication, expect more than a few surprises once the wins start counting.

HBCU running backs aren’t just making noise this season — they’re rewriting the rushing leaderboard across the FCS. Through games played Saturday, September 27, 2025, players from Jackson State, North Carolina Central, and Alcorn State are powering their way into national headlines in two key rushing categories: yards per carry and total rushing yards.

Yards Per Carry: Ahmad Miller Sets the Standard

No one in the FCS is more efficient with the football than Ahmad Miller of Jackson State. The junior back is averaging an incredible 8.91 yards per carry, leading the nation. Miller’s explosive start includes a 180-yard, two-touchdown opener against Hampton and another 101-yard performance versus Southern. He’s been the definition of big-play ability for the Tigers’ offense.

Jackson State knocked off Southern 31-17 behind a dominant ground game and timely defense. Miller set the tone with 101 rushing yards on 14 carries, while the Tigers shut out the Jaguars in the fourth quarter to pull away late.

Also representing HBCUs on the efficiency list is Jacorian Sewell of Alcorn State. The senior Bruiser is currently sixth nationally at 7.54 yards per carry, racking up 422 yards on just 56 attempts. Sewell’s production gives Alcorn a dangerous go to back in their offense.

Alcorn State fell in a 24-20 road battle against Arkansas–Pine Bluff after a back-and-forth game. Sewell was a bright spot, ripping off a 33-yard touchdown and adding another short score, but the Braves couldn’t hold a late fourth-quarter lead as UAPB drove 79 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

Total Rushing Yards: Chris Mosley Is the Workhorse

When it comes to sheer volume, Chris Mosley of North Carolina Central is pacing the field. The senior leads the entire FCS with 607 rushing yards through his first six games. Mosley’s season highlights include a monster 182-yard outing against Southern University and a jaw-dropping three-touchdown, 168-yard performance versus North Carolina A&T. He’s proving to be the engine of NCCU’s offense while keeping the Eagles’ championship ambitions alive.

North Carolina Central powered past East Texas A&M 35-21, staying unbeaten in league play. Chris Mosley paced the Eagles’ rushing attack with 72 yards and a score, while the passing game added explosive plays to keep the momentum rolling.

Why It Matters

For HBCU programs, these stats are more than just numbers — they’re proof of the elite talent thriving across Black college football and the impact these athletes can make on the national stage. Miller and Sewell’s efficiency shows how HBCU teams can strike quickly and flip field position in a single snap, while Mosley’s workhorse production underscores the depth and power of HBCU rushing attacks.

With the season just heating up, the race for rushing supremacy could become one of the defining storylines in the FCS — and HBCUs are right at the heart of it.

Mississippi State had already made its point by halftime. The nationally ranked SEC school was leading Alcorn State 63-0 under the lights at Davis Wade Stadium, the Bulldogs and Braves coaching staffs shook hands—figuratively, at least—on an unusual adjustment. The second half would be shortened to two 10-minute quarters, a decision rooted in both mercy and logistics. The reason? Alcorn’s famed “Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite” HBCU marching band needed to pack up, hit the road, and make it to New Orleans for a performance at the Saints’ home game the next day.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
A Lopsided Score and a Cultural Pivot

From the opening kick, Mississippi State flexed its SEC muscle. The Bulldogs ripped off explosive scores of 75 and 42 yards, racked up 348 first-half yards, and built a 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. By halftime, the 42 points they had dropped on Alcorn marked their biggest first-half outburst since 2013.

Alcorn State, an HBCU with deep football tradition, never stopped competing. Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert completed 11 passes for 80 yards, while Omarion Blakes led all Braves receivers with three catches. On defense, Bakari McCall intercepted a pass in the second quarter, and linebacker TB Hinton recorded five tackles. However, the uphill battle was obvious against the depth and speed of Mississippi State.

That’s why the second half became more about preservation and pragmatism. Rest the Bulldogs’ starters, keep Alcorn’s players safe, and get the band on its way to the Big Easy.

The NCAA “Mercy Rule”

While fans may call it a mercy rule, the NCAA doesn’t officially list it. Instead, the rulebook allows both head coaches and the referee to mutually agree to shorten the length of quarters if the game situation calls for it. Blowouts, weather delays, or—like this—cultural scheduling conflicts can all qualify.

In this case, the Braves left Starkville with more than just a 63-0 final. They carried pride in keeping their poise on the field and an even bigger stage waiting in New Orleans, where the band’s halftime show would resonate more than the scoreboard.

SEC HBCU Mississippi State Alcorn State
The Business of Money Games

Saturday night’s matchup was never about competitive balance. It was a money game—an all-too-familiar arrangement in HBCU football. Smaller schools accept lopsided matchups with Power Five opponents in exchange for hefty payouts that can fund athletic departments for an entire season.

Alcorn State’s take-home: $510,000. That figure was negotiated from the original $400,000 agreed upon in 2016, then bumped to $475,000 in a 2018 addendum. The final 2025 number represents the cost of stepping onto the same field as an SEC powerhouse.

But the trade-offs spark debate across the HBCU landscape. Just last week, North Carolina A&T head coach Shawn Gibbs criticized the culture of money games after his team was dismantled by UCF, losing not only on the scoreboard but also three quarterbacks to injury. For him, the check wasn’t worth the risk.

What It Means

For Mississippi State, the game was business as usual: a tune-up, a stat-padding showcase, and a chance to rest starters before SEC play ramps up. For Alcorn, it was equal parts financial necessity and cultural statement. The band’s primetime performance in New Orleans underscored the dual identity of HBCUs—athletics and the marching band tradition, both commanding national stages.

In the end, the scoreboard read 63-0, but the real story was how an SEC blowout bent to the rhythm of HBCU band culture while making an honest acknowledgment of the competitive nature of HBCU money games.

Jarveon Howard has taken the long road back to the NFL, but the grind is finally paying off for the HBCU product. After tearing through the United Football League this past spring with the St. Louis Battlehawks, the former Alcorn State running back is packing his bags for Training Camp with the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills, fresh off another AFC Championship appearance, are bringing in Howard to help bolster a suddenly thin backfield.

From the SWAC to the UFL Spotlight

Howard’s football story is the kind that makes HBCU programs proud. A two-time First Team All-SWAC selection at Alcorn State, he was the engine of the Braves’ offense in 2022 and 2023. In 22 games at Alcorn, he totaled 2,042 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns on 407 carries. He was named SWAC Newcomer of the Year in 2022 and a BOXTOROW All-American before earning another All-SWAC nod the following season.

Before transferring to Alcorn, Howard cut his teeth at Syracuse. From 2018 to 2021, he appeared in 26 games for the Orange. He racked up 731 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground while adding 11 receptions. Howard’s college career (Syracuse + Alcorn) saw him pile up 2,773 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry.

That résumé didn’t earn him an NFL draft selection, but it did put him on the radar. Howard signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2024 before being released. When the UFL came calling, he turned it into his proving ground.

With the Battlehawks in 2025, Howard produced 316 rushing yards and three touchdowns. The Highlight? A record-setting 74-yard run against Houston—the longest in league regular-season history. His play helped St. Louis finish with a league-best 8-2 record and got NFL scouts watching again.

Right Place, Right Time in Buffalo

Timing worked in Howard’s favor. The Buffalo Bills placed free-agent pickup Darrynton Evans on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, creating an opening in the backfield. On August 18, 2025, Howard signed with Buffalo, officially returning to the NFL.

Now he joins a team that’s both talented and hungry. Led by reigning MVP Josh Allen, the Bills went 13-4 last season, winning their fifth straight AFC East crown before falling to Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game.

Howard won’t be expected to carry the load, but his power and big-play potential could carve him a role in an offense looking for reliable depth.

HBCU NFL Buffalo Bills Jarveon Howard

The Bigger Picture for HBCU Football

Howard’s path highlights the persistence it often takes for HBCU standouts to reach the NFL. From the SWAC to the UFL and now Buffalo, he’s proof that talent will eventually find its stage.

Jarveon Howard also adds to the HBCU footprint in Buffalo, joining North Carolina Central alum Brandon Codrington, the Bills’ primary return man in 2024.

For Howard, this is another chance to prove he belongs on Sundays. For Alcorn State and HBCU football, it’s another success story showing the pipeline from Black college programs to the pros is alive and growing.

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU women’s basketball will begin its 51st season with a mix of national showdowns and meaningful regional ties — including four games against HBCU opponents. Matchups against Langston, Alcorn State, Morgan State, and Alabama State will give LSU both early-season challenges and a chance to honor the tradition of Black college basketball.

A Familiar Face in the Preseason

The Tigers open the preseason with two exhibition games, including an October 30 contest against Langston University. Based in Oklahoma, Langston is an NAIA HBCU program. While the result won’t affect LSU’s record, it provides a valuable test and a spotlight moment for Langston.

Alcorn State Returns to Baton Rouge

LSU’s first official HBCU opponent arrives November 20 when Alcorn State visits the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Lady Braves, members of the SWAC, finished the 2024-25 season with a 14-18 record. This game is part of a key home stretch designed to prepare LSU for SEC competition.

LSU, HBCU

Morgan State Comes South

On December 16, LSU will host Morgan State, a proud MEAC program. The Bears ended last season with a 13-17 mark. Known for their toughness and physical style, Morgan State could provide LSU with one of its more gritty non-conference tests.

Alabama State Closes the 2025 Calendar

The Tigers’ final non-conference home game takes place December 28 against Alabama State. The Hornets, another SWAC opponent, finished last season 6-24. The matchup offers a final tune-up before LSU opens SEC play.

More Than Just Games

By scheduling four HBCUs, LSU deepens its ties to Black college basketball history and culture. These games provide HBCU student-athletes with greater exposure while offering fans a blend of tradition and talent. LSU continues to set an example among Power Five programs in fostering these cross-institutional matchups.

Ready for the SEC Grind

Coach Kim Mulkey enters her fifth season with high expectations. Returning stars Flau’jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams lead a roster stacked with top freshmen and key transfers. The early-season HBCU matchups will help build momentum heading into a challenging SEC slate that opens January 1 against Kentucky.

From tip-off in October to the postseason in March, LSU’s path will cross the country. But it will host four HBCUs at home just one year after Grambling State head coach Courtney Simmons de-cried having to play money games after a 46-point loss to LSU.

“Nothing about getting the snot beat out of us helps us for league play,” she said.

LORMAN, Miss. — Alcorn State University is changing the game this fall. But instead of a new quarterback or head coach, it’s a fresh crew of media stars taking the field. They’re called The 4Kasters, and they’re bringing a youthful, high-energy twist to HBCU football coverage in 2025.

Meet the 4Kasters: The New Faces of Alcorn Football Media

The 4Kasters are a group of four young sports enthusiasts who will serve as sideline reporters for Braves home games. With microphones in hand and badges around their necks, these mini media pros will interview players, coaches, and fans in real time.

Their name is a clever play on “casters” and “4K” resolution — a nod to both broadcasting and high-definition quality. More importantly, they represent a bold new way to connect with the community and showcase HBCU football through fresh eyes.

A Vision Rooted in Innovation and Community

“Alcorn has always embraced innovation and community,” said Athletic Director E. D’Wayne Robinson. “With the 4Kasters, we’re combining both. This initiative gives kids an incredible opportunity to grow and engage while connecting fans to the game in a whole new way.”

That new connection comes in the form of real-time interviews, fun sideline banter, and questions that bring out the heart of the HBCU game day experience. Whether they’re getting the scoop from a star running back or talking to a kid in the stands, the 4Kasters are all about energy and engagement.

Where to Watch the 4Kasters in Action

Fans can catch the 4Kasters in multiple places throughout the season:

 • On the jumbotron at home games
 • Across Alcorn Athletics’ social media channels
 • In special video features shared online

Their interviews and game day coverage will be part of a larger effort to spotlight HBCU culture, school spirit, and student-athlete stories.

Building the Next Generation of HBCU Storytellers

By putting microphones in young hands, Alcorn State is doing more than entertaining fans. It’s inspiring future journalists and showing that storytelling has no age limit.

This fall, as the Braves chase wins on the field, the 4Kasters will be chasing answers, reactions, and unforgettable moments.

Be sure to follow Alcorn State University on social media for all the updates. The 2025 season is about to get a whole lot brighter — and bolder — thanks to four young voices bringing 4K flair to HBCU football.

Former HBCU football player turned fitness influencer Ashton Hall has once again captured the internet’s attention. This time, it’s through a collaboration with actor Glen Powell, who joined the former Alcorn State Brave for his viral morning routine ahead of the trailer launch for the upcoming film The Running Man.

Hall, renowned for his unconventional wellness practices—like dunking his face in ice-cold Saratoga Spring Water and using banana peels as facial treatments—invited Powell to experience his unique regimen. The resulting video, featuring Powell embracing Hall’s eccentric methods, quickly went viral, generating widespread buzz across social media platforms.

This collaboration coincided with the release of the first trailer for The Running Man, a dystopian action thriller directed by Edgar Wright. The film stars Powell as Ben Richards, a desperate father who enters a deadly game show to secure funds for his ailing daughter. Unlike the 1987 adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wright’s version aims to stay truer to Stephen King’s original 1982 novel, offering a more grounded and intense narrative.

Powell’s preparation for the role included intense training and consulting industry veterans. Notably, he received advice from Tom Cruise on perfecting his on-screen running technique, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in action sequences.

The synergy between Ashton Hall’s viral fitness persona and Powell’s commitment to his role has created a unique moment to promote The Running Man. The film is set to premiere in theaters on November 7, 2025, promising a thrilling experience that blends intense action with social commentary.

For a glimpse into their dynamic collaboration, check out the official teaser for The Running Man below:

YouTube star and global streamer IShowSpeed added another wild moment to his IRL content by racing — and easily beating — fitness influencer and former HBCU football player Ashton Hall. The two internet personalities faced off in a footrace that quickly went viral.

Hall, a former Alcorn State University running back, is now a well-known fitness coach and entrepreneur. He predicted before the race that Speed wouldn’t even be in the frame when he crossed the finish line. Known for his intense 3:50 a.m. routines and viral videos, Hall came in confident.

But IShowSpeed had other plans.

The 20-year-old streamer, real name Darren Watkins Jr., won all four races with ease. Speed didn’t hold back, taunting Hall after each win with his trademark over-the-top energy.

IShowSpeed shot to fame in 2021 with his loud, unpredictable streams. He mixes gaming, travel, and real-life adventures, earning a reputation as one of the world’s biggest internet personalities. His energetic style and cultural curiosity have drawn a massive following.

Hall, who helps fitness coaches grow their businesses, took the loss with humor. His bold pre-race talk only added to the fun as fans watched the unexpected outcome unfold.

The lighthearted race brought together two very different online worlds — and gave fans a hilarious, high-energy showdown they won’t forget.

Ashton Hall, a former HBCU football player turned viral internet sensation, is making headlines again. Hall, who played running back for Alcorn State University, was tapped as the star of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ creative 2025 NFL schedule release video.

From HBCU Gridiron to Internet Fame

Hall began his athletic career at Alcorn State and is a proud member of the HBCU sports community and the SWAC conference. Though his playing time was limited—he appeared in just five games—he left the field with a drive that extended far beyond football.

After college, Hall shifted his focus to self-discipline and personal development. That passion led him to social media, where he began posting videos about his intense and unique “morning routine.”

In these now-famous videos, Hall wakes up at 3:52 a.m. sharp. He tapes his mouth shut to promote nose breathing during sleep, dunks his face in ice water, journals, works out, and even uses banana peels for his skincare.

While it might sound extreme, his content struck a chord. One video reached over 750 million views, turning Hall into a wellness and fitness star. At the time of the Jaguars’ schedule release, he was already approaching 16 million Instagram followers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, recognizing Hall’s Jacksonville roots and viral popularity, teamed up with him to reveal their 2025 schedule. The video, shot at the Miller Electric Center, follows Hall through a parody of his morning routine. Only this time, each step reveals a new opponent on the Jags’ schedule. In the video, he plunges his face into ice water, suits up in Jaguars gear, and even takes a mock business call, all while revealing the 18-week NFL schedule.

Ashton Hall’s story is a shining example of how HBCU athletes continue to influence culture beyond sports.

Cam Ward’s journey from a zero-star recruit to the No. 1 overall pick is one of the most compelling storylines in recent NFL Draft history. Now, as the new face of the Tennessee Titans, Ward is quite literally walking in the footsteps of HBCU legend and Titans icon Steve McNair. A comparison that has captured the imagination of fans and analysts alike.

Ward’s path mirrors McNair’s in powerful ways. While McNair rose from Alcorn State, an HBCU powerhouse, playing in what was then called Division I-AA, now FCS. Cam Ward began at Incarnate Word, a smaller FCS program, before climbing the college football ranks through stops at Washington State and the University of Miami. Despite humble beginnings, both quarterbacks emerged as dynamic leaders. Both carrying the expectation of taking the Tennessee Titans franchise to great heights.

Young Star

His 2024 season at Miami took Ward from a promising prospect to a number one pick. He amassed 4,313 passing yards and 39 touchdowns, solidifying his status as a top prospect. Analysts have drawn comparisons between Ward and McNair, noting similarities in their playing styles and leadership qualities.

The comparisons came early and often during NFL Draft coverage. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky boldly declared, “We’re getting the next Steve McNair,” pointing to Ward’s arm strength, mobility, and fearlessness in the pocket. NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah added that Ward’s ability to “set his feet after scrambling” and command the game under pressure reminded him of McNair in his prime.

Jeremiah likened Ward to both Baker Mayfield and Steve McNair, emphasizing his dual-threat capabilities. The analyst noted that Ward’s balance of scrambling and ability to set his feet in the pocket reminded him of McNair.

HBCU Cam Ward Steve McNair Tennessee Titans NFL Draft

Emory Hunt Jr., an analyst and writer, remarked, “When Cam took the field at Incarnate Word, I was like, ‘Wow, he looks a lot like Steve McNair.” Drawing attention to Ward’s early display of McNair-like qualities.

HBCU Legend

Steve McNair remains one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever come from an HBCU. He set FCS records with 14,496 passing yards and 16,823 total yards. McNair was drafted third overall in 1995 by the Houston Oilers. He became the highest-selected offensive player from an HBCU, but during his time with the Oilers, the franchise relocated and rebranded as the Tennessee Titans. This transition made McNair the face of a new era in Tennessee football. His transition to the Tennessee Titans and subsequent success paved the way for future quarterbacks like Ward. McNair became a co-MVP, led the Titans to a Super Bowl, and established a legacy in Tennessee that remains unmatched. Until now, perhaps.

“I think I know a decent amount about Steve McNair. I’m blessed to, you know, be in a situation like he was, to have an expectation like that.” Ward said about McNair shortly after being drafted. “But at the end of the day, I want to be the greatest to do it. I’m not looking up to no man—I want everybody to look up to me. And so I’m honored to be here. I’m just ready and happy that I’m the quarterback for the Tennessee Titans.”

The echoes of McNair’s journey are clear, but Ward is determined to blaze his own trail while honoring the one McNair carved out before him. For the Titans, Ward isn’t just a new quarterback—he’s a something of a spiritual successor. His story brings the franchise’s connection to its past full circle, linking it to its future with Cam Ward. As he steps under center in Nashville, Cam Ward doesn’t just carry the weight of being a top draft pick. He carries a legacy—and he’s ready to make it his own.

A Florida State assistant is expected to take a vacant HBCU basketball job.

Alcorn State is expected to hire Jake Morton as its next head coach, according to a report by Jon Rothstein. The move is the latest in a busy offseason across HBCU basketball, as Morton steps in to replace Landon Bussie, who left last month to take over at Chicago State.

Morton brings a deep resume to the HBCU ranks, having served as an assistant coach at numerous Division I programs and currently completing his first season at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. His return to head a program aligns with Alcorn’s desire to maintain momentum after Bussie helped make the Braves a consistent force in the SWAC and the broader HBCU basketball landscape.

A former standout at the University of Miami, Morton played for Hamilton from 1989 to 1993, later returning to the Hurricanes as an assistant coach. He helped guide Miami to three straight 20-win seasons and a 2008 NCAA Tournament berth. His coaching path includes stops at East Carolina, Jacksonville State, Coppin State, and even an early stop at HBCU Bowie State, where he began his coaching career in 2000.

Jake Morton

Morton’s time at Jacksonville State marked one of the most successful stretches in program history, including an Atlantic Sun regular-season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance. His teams averaged 20 wins per season, a level of consistency Alcorn State fans will welcome.

Alcorn State is aiming to stay competitive in the SWAC and nationally among HBCUs, and Jake Morton’s hiring signals a commitment to experience and proven results. As HBCU programs continue to raise their profiles and invest in high-level coaching talent, Morton’s arrival is both a reunion with his roots and a chance to lead his own program after one year at Florida State.

Alcorn State men’s basketball coach Landon Bussie is set to leave the HBCU to become the next head coach at Chicago State, according to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68.

Reports of Bussie becoming the Cougars next basketball coach were first reported by Adam Nelson. The news comes six days after the Braves’ elimination from the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. Bethune Cookman defeated Alcorn 69-60 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

This season, the 37-year-old led the Braves to a 11-21 mark overall and a 7-11 finish in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alcorn earned the No. 6 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. In five seasons, Bussie compiled a 66-83 record overall while finishing 59-26 in conference action.

Alcorn State, Landon Bussie, HBCU, Chicago State

During his tenure, Bussie led the HBCU to back-to-back SWAC regular-season championships in 2022 and 2023 and earned SWAC Coach of the Year honors those same years. The Braves’ regular-season success also resulted in the program earning consecutive appearances in the National Invitational Tournament in 2022 and 2023.

Prior to Alcorn, Bussie served as an assistant coach at Prairie View from 2014 to 2020 and as an assistant at NAIA HBCU Xavier in Louisiana from 2010 to 2013.

Now, Bussie joins a Cougars’ program that finished 4-28 overall and 4-12 in Northeast Conference action. Chicago State parted ways with former head coach Scott Spinelli on March 7.

Despite the rough 2024-25 campaign, the Cougars appeared in the 2024 College Basketball Invitational tournament, making a second-round appearance in the event.

ATLANTA — Aniya Gourdine ran to find her cell phone moments after the scoreboard lit up with triple zeroes as Southern defeated Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship on Saturday at Gateway Center Arena.

While Gourdine’s mother watched her celebrate with her teammates after the championship win, the first person Gourdine called was her father, Jerome.

Before Saturday’s contest, Jerome told Gourdine that the Jaguars’ contest against the Braves was the moment — playing for a chance to compete in the women’s NCAA tournament — she had been waiting for her entire life.

“I’ve been dreaming of this [playing in March Madness] since I was a little girl,” Gourdine told HBCU GameDay.

When the All-SWAC women’s tournament selection dialed her father’s number, he answered the phone with a simple message. But for Gourdine, who finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory, it was one that was much deeper than winning Saturday’s SWAC title game.

“I am so happy for you,” Gourdine recalled the statement from her dad. “It just meant everything. He was really the one who really worked me out, got me to play [basketball]. …It was only right that I called him [after Jaguars’ win].”

During the regular season, Alcorn defeated Southern 59-55 in overtime on Feb. 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gourdine, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists in that contest, never forgot the feeling of losing the previous contest. Even more, a year ago, the Braves eliminated the Jaguars 59-52 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 SWAC Tournament.

But according to Gourdine, Southern didn’t view the game as a “rematch.”

“…We just locked in,” Gourdine said. “We didn’t want to take it personal and try to do too much. We treated it [the game] as a regular game and came out on top.

Gourdine, who transferred to Southern last season after two years at Temple, found a home in playing for Jaguars head coach Carlos Funchess. However, the process of Gourdine aiding Southern to win its second SWAC tourney title in the last three seasons and the program’s seventh since 2002 was not easy.

“A lot of people don’t see them [players] spending hours in the weight room in the summer or running suicides or line drills,” Funchess said in the postgame news conference. “Getting up 400 or 500 shots … getting in early in the morning, at 5:30 to get some extra shots in. People don’t see that. …They think you just throw a jersey on and go out and practice a few times and go win a game. …When you start doing this from June 3 until [now], it’s a lot of man hours that’s been put into this.”

With the Jaguars’ win, Gourdine fulfilled one of her goals this season to capture a SWAC tournament title. In the process, she captured her dream of earning a chance to feel the taste of March Madness in women’s basketball. The Baltimore native has never played nor attended a women’s NCAA tournament game.

On Sunday, Gourdine, along with her teammates, will find out which team Southern will face in the women’s NCAA tournament with the last four at-large teams — programs sitting at 65 through 68 — on March 19 and March 20 before the first round of the tournament begins on March 21. Gourdine has waited patiently to play on the national stage. However, the preparation for the bright lights on the hardwood started when she was 8 years old, competing against he two older sisters and her male cousins. She credits them for her toughness on the court

“That’s where the dog and the roughness come from,” Gourdine said.

That grit and determination has served Gourdine well. As of Saturday night, Southern is projected to play in a First Four matchup as the No. 16 seed in Region I Birmingham. If the Jaguars win that game, they will face the projected No. 1 seed South Carolina.

With the SWAC tourney behind her, the Jaguars leading scorer will seek to help Southern continue its trail of magic in March and earn a win in the NCAA tournament.

ATLANTA — Destiny Brown hollered “YEAA” at the top of her lungs after No. 6 seeded Alcorn State upset No. 3 Alabama A&M 56-53 in an HBCU women’s basketball thriller on Thursday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

The Braves’ HBCU WBB star registered a double-double performance, finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks to lift Alcorn (13-17, 10-8) to a semifinal matchup against Texas Southern (16-14, 14-4) on Friday. While Brown’s impact was certainly felt offensively in the game, the SWAC’s Defensive Player of the Year played an integral part in the Braves outrebounding the Bulldogs (40-29), including 25-18 on the defensive glass.

Destiny steps up

“Destiny [Brown] really made some big plays for us down the stretch when we needed her to,” said Braves head coach Nate Kilbert postgame after the Braves’ win. “But that’s what she’s been doing all year.”

Ironically, during the HBCU hoops regular season, Brown’s best performance came against Alabama A&M, where she notched a double-double and a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds in the Braves’ win. Although Alcorn notched the win, Gilbert had doubts about his team overcoming moments of adversity throughout the contest.

In the third quarter, AAMU’s defensive pressure on the ball and its ability to generate steals played a big role in the Bulldogs outsourcing the Braves 20-12. Twelve of their total in the quarter came on fast-break opportunities. Alcorn also committed nine of its 26 turnovers in the third quarter.

But Gilbert’s team didn’t waver. The Braves flipped the script in the fourth quarter, holding the AAMU to 14 points on 33.3% shooting from the floor while Alcorn poured in 21 points off 6-of-11 shots from the field.

HBCU SWAC

“… When we playing our best basketball is when we’re playing our best defense, when we lock it down on people,” Gilbert said.

The Braves also added five of their 13 total second chance points in the quarter due in part to Brown’s rebounding.

“In the second half, when they [Alabama A&M] came out with that pressure, I was getting in my head and my teammates right there telling me, like, we need you,” said Brown, who went scoreless in the third quarter. “… Basketball is a game of runs, so they’re going to make their run. We’re going to make our run, we have to stay level headed… I think my team did a great job of that., We kept our eyes on the prize.”

Alcorn will face Texas Southern on Friday at 11 am ET in the semi-final round of the 2025 SWAC Tournament at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park.

Alcorn State University, an HBCU located in Lorman, MS has had its women’s soccer season canceled and is facing accusations of possible Title IX violations.

The Clarion Ledger reports that the HBCU doesn’t have enough players to field a team.

“Our previous interim head coach left the university, and we had a short period of time to recruit additional players after the new soccer coach arrived,” Alcorn State interim vice president of marketing and communication Maxine Greenleaf said in an email to the Clarion Ledger.

Ken Kabiru was hired as the Alcorn State University Soccer coach on July 22.

Unfortunately, that’s not the worst of the news.

Alcorn State, HBCU
Jaylin Ward, the preseason SWAC Defensive Player of The Year, will not get to play this season.

Key issues include inadequate facilities—such as showers with bats and snakes, and the absence of hot water—as well as unfulfilled promises of soccer equipment like cleats. The training room was reportedly understaffed and poorly equipped, with unqualified students performing medical treatments.

These allegations came to light in a letter signed by 15 current and former players at the HBCU. Additionally, the head coach, Ken Kabiru, who was hired just before the season, has a history of legal troubles that further complicate the situation.

The SWAC says it is aware of the current status of the Alcorn State program.

“The Southwestern Athletic Conference has been formally notified that Alcorn State University will cancel the 2024 Women’s Soccer season,” the SWAC wrote. “Alcorn State University has been sanctioned in accordance with the SWAC Constitution, Bylaws and Sports Regulations. We look forward to the return of Alcorn State Lady Braves Soccer as one of ten participating member institutions in the sport of Women’s Soccer within the Southwestern Athletic Conference.”

The program has won just 39 games since the HBCU established it back in 2003.

The Bay Area Panthers are bringing back a familiar face with the re-signing of former HBCU quarterback Felix Harper out of Alcorn State, who has been with the franchise for the past two seasons.

“We are thrilled to have Felix back with us. He is a full-field reader who’s confident and thoughtful about where he wants to place the football,” said Panthers Head Coach Rob Keefe. “He is capable of extending plays both inside and outside the pocket and is poised in the face of both physical and situational pressure.”

In 2024, Felix Harper played in nine games, completing 63 of 102 passes (62 percent) for 661 yards, with 11 touchdowns. He was the team’s third-leading rusher, accumulating 178 yards and seven scores. Harper made four starts and recorded three wins against playoff teams—two against San Diego and one at Vegas. In the victory over the Knight Hawks, Harper completed 15 of 20 passes for 169 yards, three touchdowns, in addition to racking up 68 yards on the ground and one score. On July 20 in San Diego, Harper led a second-half comeback with a scoring pass and a rushing touchdown during a 17-0 run that secured a 30-20 win for the Panthers.

The two-time All-American from HBCU Alcorn State is grateful for the opportunity and says the past two seasons have prepared him to be a major contributor.

“I want to thank Coach Keefe for bringing me back and believing in me as we take the next journey. Not everyone gets the opportunity to keep playing this game, and I want to be a leader for this team,” said Felix Harper. “I’ve made progress each year. Going into my third year, I’m definitely going to be ready to compete each and every day.”

Malachi Bailey and the Alcorn State Braves know what it is like to face Shedeur Sanders. They won’t play Colorado this Thursday, but they will face someone similar.

Alcorn State kicks off its 2024 HBCU football season with a challenging test on Thursday night as it travels to Birmingham to face UAB. According to new head coach Cedric Thomas, the Braves will look to set the tone defensively as he prepares his unit for a tough battle against UAB’s efficient quarterback, Jacob Zeno. Thomas recognizes the significance of the game for his defensive front, starting with standout defensive lineman Malachi Bailey.

“You know, that’s going to start with Malachi Bailey,” Thomas said. “I like these games…there’s some money implications behind it. However, you still get evaluation. We got three kids that are playing in the league now, and they’re going to look at these guys from Malachi and guys like that.”

Bailey, along with Kayvon Henderson and other key players like Gideon Spottsville and Stemarion Edwards, will be crucial in applying pressure on UAB’s offensive line. Thomas emphasized the importance of disrupting the Blazers’ offensive rhythm.

“Malachi’s got to do a really good job of stretching those tackles on the edge, him and Kayvon Henderson,” he said. “From an offensive line standpoint, if we can get some pressure on the quarterback and not get knocked off the ball, we have a chance on the back end.”

The Braves’ defensive challenge will be heightened by facing UAB’s starting quarterback, Jacob Zeno, who transferred from Baylor and has proven himself to be a poised presence in the pocket. Thomas compared Zeno to another talented HBCU passer in former Jackson State and current Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, highlighting the UAB quarterback’s efficiency.

Alcorn State UAB Malachi Bailey HBCU
Alcorn State defensive lineman Malachi Bailey is a big part of the game plan versus UAB.

“Shedeur-like”

“They’ve got a really good quarterback that’s cool, calm, and collected in the pocket,” Thomas said. “Kind of puts you in the mind of a Shedeur when you’re talking about it from a numerical standpoint…70% or close to it in percentages that says he’s efficient with the football.”

According to the UAB athletics website, Zeno has the numbers to back up the accolades. Zeno set the single-season record for completions (279) and completion percentage (73.6). He also threw for the second-most yards in a season with 3,126. Zeno finished the season ranked second nationally in completion percentage. He set a UAB FBS single-game passing record with 484 yards and five touchdowns against Florida Atlantic.

With Zeno’s accuracy and composure, Thomas knows his defensive line will have to be sharp and disciplined to limit UAB’s offensive production.

Shedeur Sanders
Shedeur Sanders looks to pass against Southern in 2022.

“We’ve got to do a good job up front attacking the O-line and changing some looks up because he’s a savvy quarterback. So that’s what we’ve got to do–attack that offense to try to have some success.”

Ultimately, the game will likely hinge on how well Alcorn State’s defensive line can disrupt Zeno’s timing and keep the Blazers’ offense out of rhythm. Thomas has confidence in his group of pass rushers to rise to the occasion.

“That starts with the guys up front,” Thomas said. “We expect Gideon Spottsville, Kayvon Henderson, Malachi Bailey, and Stemarion Edwards to kind of get after it from a defensive standpoint to give us a chance.”

As the Mississippi HBCU faces a higher-level FBS opponent, they’ll be looking to make a statement with their defensive front leading the charge.

The post HBCU coaching legend explains why he left alma mater appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Fred McNair was the head coach at Alcorn State University a year ago – today he’s the tight ends coach at rival HBCU Southern University.

That might sound like a step back – but it doesn’t appear that McNair feels that way. He recently opened up about his transition from his alma mater, and a school he led to two SWAC titles, in an interview with “Locked on HBCU.”

“When you’re at a place so long, a place that you love and you’re a two-time graduate of the university – getting an opportunity to get my BS and my Masters – You tend to love the place that you graduated from. Your alma mater,” McNair said. “But I think, at the same time, your alma mater has to love you too. The things that you’ve done in the past, the winning tradition that we’ve had and the championships that we’ve brought in as a coaching staff. But I think some of the things that I really expected to happen – didn’t happen. Just coming from the leadership, things that wasn’t done right.”

McNair didn’t elaborate on exactly what things weren’t done right. But he said he knew it was time to make a move when it cost him his peace.

Fred McNair
Fred McNair led Alcorn State to back-to-back SWAC titles and four division titles in his first four years as a head coach.

“Sometimes you lose a lot of sleep at night with some of the things you can’t control. When that stuff started happening, and you’re not really happy anymore – it’s time to move on and find your happy place. The biggest thing for me – it was bittersweet but I had to do something for myself to kind of make myself happy and unstressful. I’m at a place now where I can sit back and enjoy myself, being a position coach. And hopefully one day I’ll have the opportunity to be a head coach again.”

It looked like he wouldn’t have to wait long to get that shot. McNair was reportedly the front-runner for the Texas Southern University job opening in December. McNair says he interviewed for the job and hoped to get it, but after several highly publicized board of trustees meetings, Cris Dishman – not McNair – was named as head coach.

The even-keeled McNair has taken the events of the last year in stride.

“I understand the business process of everything,” McNair said of the Texas Southern University job. “As a head coach and as a position coach – things happen. It’s really nothing to cry about. You just have to roll your sleeves up and find other employment.”

That other employment came from the HBCU in Baton Rouge, whom McNair often battled as a player and a coach. He said he always admired the program and its fan-base, even as an opponent.

“Thank God that Southern reached out to me. Coach (Terrence) Graves, and coach Mark Fredrick reached out to me one day and asked about this job here here. So I was head over heels when they called me.”

There’s no telling how long Fred McNair will be in Baton Rouge. While calling Southern his ‘happy place’ he also stated he hopes to be a head coach once again. For now, he’s in the Columbia Blue and Gold and loving it.

Netflix just announced it will be releasing a documentary on fallen HBCU legend and NFL MVP Steve McNair in August.

“UNTOLD: The Murder of Air McNair” will launch Netflix’s UNTOLD documentary series next month. It is slated to premiere on Aug. 20 and is directed by Rodney Lucas and Taylor Alexander Ward.

Steve McNair, often known as “Air McNair,” had a remarkable career both in college and the NFL. He played college football at Alcorn State, where he became one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history. McNair set numerous records, including throwing for 14,496 yards and 119 touchdowns. His senior year saw him finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting, a rare feat for a player from a historically black college and university (HBCU). McNair’s performance earned him the Walter Payton Award, recognizing him as the best player in Division I-AA (now FCS) football.

McNair was selected third overall by the Houston Oilers in the 1995 NFL Draft, becoming the highest-drafted African American quarterback at the time. Over his 13-year NFL career, McNair played for the Oilers, who later became the Tennessee Titans, and the Baltimore Ravens. He led the Titans to a Super Bowl appearance in 2000 and was named NFL co-MVP in 2003. McNair was known for his toughness, mobility, and ability to perform under pressure, amassing over 31,000 passing yards and 174 touchdown passes in his career. His legacy continues to inspire, and he is remembered as one of the greatest quarterbacks to emerge from an HBCU.

“The 2009 murder of Steve “Air” McNair, best known for his exciting run to the Super Bowl a decade earlier with the Tennessee Titans, and the unanswered questions still surrounding his death,” says the Netflix release.

A bill that was thought to threaten multiple HBCUs in Mississippi did not pass in the state’s legislature. John Polk, sponsor of controversial SB 7526, wanted to make that much clearer.

“Please everyone get that message out,” Polk told the Clarion-Ledger. “The chair has killed my bill. That way, I can sleep at night.”

The bill was introduced last month to the Senate Colleges and University Committee that would have led to three of the state’s nine universities shutting down. Three of those institutions are HBCUs – Alcorn State University, Jackson State University, and Mississippi Valley State University.

HBCUs, Mississippi Valley State
Mississippi Valley State has the lowest enrollment of the state’s institutions of higher learning.

Instead, SB 7525 moved out of committee, which will study the “efficiency” of those universities.

“We had hearings earlier this year where we were looking at things, and we now have a lot of data and information that was presented and that was about the enrollment cliff that we’re seeing across the country, and how that would impact our Mississippi universities,” UC Chair and bill sponsor Sen. Nicole Boyd, R-Oxford, told the committee Monday at the Mississippi Capitol. “We’ve seen declining enrollments at smaller universities, we’ve seen increasing enrollments at some of our other universities. This would give us an opportunity to look at that over the summer with the task force.”

Mississippi Valley State currently has the lowest total enrollment with just under 2,200 students.

Fred McNair has battled Southern University many times during his career as a player and a coach. Now it looks like he may be headed to Baton Rouge to join Jaguar Nation.

McNair is reportedly set to join Terrence Graves’ staff at Southern University, according to WBOK radio host Reggie Flood.

McNair has been a free agent since the end of last season after a decade at his alma mater, first as an assistant then as head coach. Following the season he was seen as the lead candidate for the head coaching vacant at Texas Southern.

All signs pointed to Dec. 15 as the red letter date, as the Texas Southern Board of Regents was set to meet to approve a contract for a head football coach – presumably Fred McNair. But it didn’t happen that day. Or that month.

Southern University

Alcorn State decided it would not sit idly by with McNair all but saddled up in his cowboy hat and spurs head for Texas. It ended up moving on, naming defensive coordinator Cedric Thomas as its next head coach.

Texas Southern eventually named a head coach – but it was Cris Dishman and not Fred McNair.

McNair was reportedly one of several candidates looked at by Florida A&M in its head coaching search, but it decided to go with defensive backs coach James Colzie III.

Now it appears that McNair, who led Alcorn State to four consecutive SWAC Championship games and two conference titles, will head over to Southern University to join first-year head coach Terrence Graves.

LORMAN, Miss. — Alcorn State University Athletics Department and Braves Football welcomes Jermaine Gales to the coaching staff. Gales enters his first season as the offensive coordinator for Alcorn State Football in 2024. Gales previously served as the Head Coach at Lincoln University from 2021-2023. Gales, who has over 20 years of experience as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I and Division II levels and has established a proven track record of building and developing successful programs.

Gales was hired in November of 2020 as the Associate Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Bluefield State, a school that had discontinued its football program in 1981. Gales helped lead the program to a 4-3 record in his lone season there.

Before building the program at Bluefield State, Gales spent two seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where, as the offensive coordinator, he took a team that hadn’t won more than two games in a season since 2014 and helped lead it to a winning record in 2019. That season, Gales directed an offense that averaged 443.4 yards per game, the third-most in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the 17th-most in NCAA Division I FCS. In his first year with the team in 2018, Gales devised an offense that ranked third in the SWAC with 423.5 yards per game, an improvement of over 100 yards per contest from the previous season.

In 2016 and 2017, Gales was the wide receivers coach at North Carolina Central and helped the Eagles win 17 games in that span. In 2016, Gales directed a receiving corps that scored 19 touchdowns, finished 18thin the FCS in yards per completion. The Eagles went undefeated in conference play that season and played in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. NCCU again posted a winning record in 2017 and ranked fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in total offense, with Jacen Murphy leading the league in receptions per game while finishing third in total receiving yards.

Gales worked as the wide receivers coach at Mars Hill from 2006-09 and again from 2013-15. In between those stints, Gales served as the offensive coordinator and coached the running backs and receivers at Saint Augustine’s, helping the program twice break season records for points per game. In 2010, Gales helped lead the Falcons to a win in the Pioneer Bowl, marking the first postseason victory in program history.

Gales graduated from Southern Arkansas in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in human performance and recreation. He later earned a Master of Education degree in kinesiology from SAU in 2005.

Before entering the coaching ranks, Gales spent two seasons playing at Mt. San Antonio as a receiver before transferring to Southern Arkansas, where he helped the Muleriders win the 1997 Gulf South Conference championship. Gales served as an assistant at SAU from 2003-05, helping develop the program’s receivers.

Gales and his wife, Kizzy, have been married for 17 years and have six children: Devaughn, Kassidy, Braeden, Tailagua, Ettastajia, and Darius. Gales also has three grandchildren: Jhase, De’Mauri and Ava.

]]>
LORMAN, Miss. — Alcorn State University has named Cedric Thomas as its new head football coach, Interim President Tracy M. Cook announced Tuesday. Thomas becomes the 22nd head coach in program history.

Thomas replaces Fred McNair after he held that seat for nearly a decade.

“Alcorn State University’s commitment to our football program and student athletes is unwavering,” said Dr. Tracy M. Cook. “I am thrilled to appoint Cedric Thomas as our new head football coach. I believe he is uniquely positioned to continue our championship winning tradition. His passion for the game, approach to leadership of our student athletes, and his vision for the future will continue to strengthen our culture of excellence as a leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.”

Interim Director of Athletics Robert Raines is pleased with the appointment of Thomas. “We are grateful that Coach Cedric Thomas has agreed to be our new head football coach,” stated Raines. “Thomas brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. As an Alcorn alumnus, Coach Thomas is a familiar face to the program, having served two stints with the Braves. He aligns perfectly with our culture, has a great command of the program, rapport with our players, and is committed to sustaining a winning program centered on strong academics, community outreach, and high character student athletes.”

Coach Thomas shared his thoughts on being selected for this new role at the university. “I am extremely humbled, thankful, and honored for this opportunity to lead the Alcorn State University Braves as the new head football coach,” said Thomas. “I want to continue to build on the foundation that was laid before me by so many legendary coaches, players, and staff. We will continue to make the University and alumni base proud of our championship culture.”

A seasoned leader, Coach Thomas rejoined the Alcorn State football staff in March of 2022 as the defensive coordinator. The Cleveland, Mississippi native takes the reigns of the program after a prior stint as the defensive back coach from 2012-2015 and the defensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017.

During his eight seasons with the Braves, Alcorn won four straight SWAC Eastern Division titles, including back-to-back SWAC titles in 2014 and 2015, and participated in the inaugural Celebration Bowl.

Before returning to Alcorn, Thomas spent the 2021 season as the head football coach of his junior college alma mater Mississippi Delta Community College. He led the Trojans to a 5-4 season with three student athletes receiving Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference All-Conference awards.

Thomas spent the 2020 season as the defensive back coach at the University of Southern Mississippi after a two-year stint as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, his undergraduate alma mater.

During his two years in Pine Bluff, Thomas helped lead the Golden Lions to a four-win improvement, as UAPB tripled their win total from two wins to six wins from 2018 to 2019. He coached 14 All-Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) honorees, including nine first-team selections.

Thomas served as the running backs coach at the University of Tennessee-Martin in 2002 before coming to MDCC in 2003, where he also spent the 2004 season. After a two-year term at Itawamba Community College in 2005 and 2006, he returned to MDCC for the 2007-2011 seasons.

The former MDCC and UAPB standout earned an Associate of Arts degree from MDCC in 1998, a bachelor’s degree in recreation in 2001 from UAPB, and a master’s degree in administration from Alcorn State University in 2015.

The former East Side High School graduate is married to Kelunda, and the couple has one daughter, Loegan. Thomas also has a son, Cedric Jr.

The Fred McNair Era of Alcorn State University football is over.

Alcorn State University announced on Tuesday that McNair is no longer the head coach of its program. It released the following statement at noon, CST.

“I would like to thank Coach Fred McNair for his many years of service and dedication to Alcorn State University. We worked diligently to extend Coach McNair a multi-year contract which would have placed him in the top tier of the conference with both compensation, incentives, and additional incentives for assistant coaches,” said Robert Raines, interim director of intercollegiate athletics. “Unfortunately, we could not reach a mutual agreement.”

Coach McNair led the Alcorn State Braves for seven seasons and coached the team to four SWAC East Division titles and a pair of SWAC Championships. McNair holds a 38-17 SWAC record (.691 winning percentage) on the Alcon State sidelines while posting an overall record of 48-34 (.585). Last season, the Braves posted a 7-4 overall and 6-2 SWAC record.

The Alcorn State University family deeply appreciates Coach McNair for his exceptional leadership to the University’s student-athletes and his commitment to excellence on the field, in the classroom, and community. The University is especially appreciative of his unique legacy as a player and a coach in elevating not only the football program but also the University. The University wishes Coach McNair well in his future endeavors.

The 14th-ranked Arkansas basketball program begins year five of the Eric Musselman era by hosting two–time defending SWAC regular season champion Alcorn State on Monday (Nov. 6). Tipoff is set for 7 pm at Bud Walton Arena.

Alcorn State heads into the 2023-2024 season on the heels of an 18-14 record. ASU went 15-3 in SWAC play.

Gone from last season’s squad is Dominic Brewton, who led the program in scoring with 12 points per game in 25.7 minutes per game. Both Jeremiah Kendall and Byron Joshua are back, though, as they averaged right at 11 points per game. Kendall also led the program with 6.7 rebounds and shot 49 percent from the field.

Norfolk State Jalen Hawkins

In terms of additions, one interesting new piece is Jalen Hawkins.

Hawkins started his career at Robert Morris back in 2019-2020 before hitting the transfer portal and landing at Norfolk State. He spent two seasons with NSU, helping the team win back-to-back MEAC titles during his time there. Hawkins averaged 12.6 points per game during the 2021-2022 seasons. He left NSU after that season, landing at Morehead State where he was limited to just six games.

Picked to finish third in the SEC, Arkansas basketball is 5-0 all time against Alcorn State, all in Fayetteville. It has an even more impressive record in openers as it has won 49 consecutive.

Arkansas basketball is a 24.5 favorite. The over/under is 144.5. The game is set for 8 PM EST and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

It doesn’t get any easier in the Tigers’ next game on Oct. 14. They will face an Alabama A&M team that has been impressive lately.
