The Alabama A&M Bulldogs couldn’t have scripted a stronger start to their 2025-26 season. Coming off a 103-32 rout of Talladega College, the Bulldogs now turn their attention to hosting No. 12 Ole Miss — a nationally ranked SEC program led by a coach who knows HBCU basketball firsthand.

Two Coaches with Familiar Roots

Yolett McPhee-McCuin, better known around the SEC as Coach Yo, started her Division I coaching career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) from 2005-2007. She earned her master’s degree there while learning the grind of HBCU basketball.

Across the sideline, Dawn Thornton also spent time at UAPB, serving later as head coach before taking over at Alabama A&M. Their paths never crossed, but both know what it means to build with limited resources and maximum drive.

That shared background brings a layer of respect to tonight’s meeting. It’s competition, not ceremony — two women who know the same climb now matching up with their own programs.

SWAC Preseason Buzz

The Bulldogs were picked second in the 2025-26 SWAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, earning five first-place votes behind only Southern.

Preseason Honors

  • Kalia WalkerSWAC Preseason Player of the Year and All-SWAC First Team
  • Jaida BeltonAll-SWAC Second Team

Walker gives Alabama A&M a proven scorer and emotional leader. Belton anchors the frontcourt with rebounding and rim protection. Together they headline a roster built to challenge anyone in the league.

Early Statement vs. Talladega

Alabama A&M wasted no time in its opener, leading 31-4 after the first quarter and forcing 27 turnovers. Six players reached double figures while the defense held Talladega to 13 percent shooting.

It was the kind of complete performance that shows what Thornton’s system looks like when it’s humming — fast, connected, and confident.

Ole Miss Brings SEC Power

Ole Miss (1-0) arrives from a convincing win over Norfolk State, another HBCU program. Coach Yo’s team plays hard, defends even harder, and carries depth at every position.

Her willingness to open the season with back-to-back HBCU opponents — Norfolk State and now Alabama A&M — says plenty about her appreciation for where she started. It’s also a reminder that respect travels both ways.

Matchups to Watch

  • Walker vs. Rebel Guards: Walker’s mid-range scoring against SEC-level length will be telling early.
  • Belton in the Paint: She’ll be key on the boards against Ole Miss’s physical front line.
  • Sideline Chess: Thornton and McPhee-McCuin both emphasize pressure defense — whichever team handles it better sets the tone.

What’s on the Line

For Alabama A&M, it’s a measuring stick game against a nationally ranked opponent. For Ole Miss, it’s another chance to tighten rotations before SEC play. For both, it’s a competitive night between programs led by women who’ve carried HBCU lessons into every phase of their careers.

Dawn Thornton — HBCU basketball’s most stylish coach — is staying put. Alabama A&M head women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton has agreed to a three-year contract extension after delivering the most successful season in program history at the NCAA Division I level. The move solidifies Thornton’s place as one of the brightest coaching minds and boldest personalities in all of HBCU sports.

Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant praised Thornton’s transformative impact on The Hill. “Coach Dawn Thornton has brought a new era of excellence to Alabama A&M women’s basketball,” Bryant said. “Her commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court, her strategic acumen, and her passion for HBCU athletics have made an immediate impact.”

In just one season, Thornton guided the Bulldogs to a 21-11 overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), earning a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The 21 victories marked Alabama A&M’s first 20-win campaign since joining NCAA Division I in 1999 — and only the fifth in the history of the program. It also represented Thornton’s first 20-win season as a head coach, cementing her reputation as both a program builder and culture shifter in HBCU basketball.

For Thornton, who has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most fashionable figures in college hoops, the extension is about more than appearances or wins. “This extension is bigger than basketball,” she said. “It’s about impact, legacy, and purpose. Every day I’m reminded that coaching is about more than winning games. It’s about shaping women into leaders, dreamers, and world changers.”

That mindset has resonated deeply within the HBCU community, where Thornton’s blend of style and substance has made her a rising icon. Her “BIG ENERGY” mantra — as she calls it — reflects a fearless confidence that’s redefining what leadership looks like on the sidelines.

With her new deal in place, Dawn Thornton will lead Alabama A&M into the 2025-26 campaign with even greater expectations. The Bulldogs open the season against Talladega before hosting Ole Miss inside the AAMU Event Center, both streamed live on SWAC TV. If her first year was any indication, Thornton’s tenure promises to be a powerful era — one that continues to elevate HBCU basketball on and off the court.

HBCUs are turning heads this preseason with several impressive wins in what college basketball fans call a “secret scrimmage.” A secret scrimmage is a closed-door matchup between Division I programs—no fans, no media, and no official scorekeeping—that coaches use to evaluate their teams before the season begins.

Until this year, NCAA rules restricted public exhibitions to non-Division I opponents unless for charity, pushing most schools toward these private sessions. But a recent rule change now allows two full exhibitions against any four-year program, meaning secret scrimmages could soon become less secret—and more valuable for exposure, especially for HBCUs.

This month, several HBCUs showed they can hold their own. Arkansas–Pine Bluff topped Arkansas–Little Rock 77-69 in a secret scrimmage that later surfaced online. Transfer forward Jaquan Scott led the Golden Lions with 24 points, while guards Alex Mirhosseini and Quion Williams added 19 and 11, respectively—all three newcomers making strong first impressions.

Meanwhile, Alabama A&M notched a 74-73 win over Samford in a public matchup, displaying balance and experience. Alcorn State also earned a 64-59 victory over North Alabama in its own secret scrimmage, paced by returner Tycen McDaniels (20 points) and transfer Jameel Morris from FDU.

For HBCUs, these preseason contests—whether secret scrimmages or public exhibitions—offer a valuable measuring stick before the real games begin. They also showcase the depth, talent, and transfer power many HBCUs are bringing into the 2025 season. If these early results are any indication, expect more than a few surprises once the wins start counting.

Alabama A&M used a 21-point second quarter to blow past Lane College, rolling to a 49-7 win Saturday night in Huntsville. The Bulldogs (3-1) forced seven turnovers, got a career-best 47-yard field goal from Victor Barbosa, and nearly pitched their first shutout since 2018.

Early Defensive Spark

The Bulldogs started slow but their defense set the tone. A safety by Lane’s quarterback Nick Billoups falling in the end zone and a sack by Xzavier Booker gave AAMU an early 7-0 cushion. Barbosa then added his career-long 47-yarder, showing consistency from distance.

Offensive Breakthrough

Quarterback Eric Handley, in his first career start, settled in quickly:

  • 15-of-28 passing, 205 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT
  • Highlight: A 48-yard strike to Daveon Walker that set up an 18-yard touchdown to Travaunta Abner.

Running backs Kolton Nero (69 yards, 2 TDs) and Ryan Morrow (33 yards, 1 TD) powered the ground game, while Abner and Walker combined for 128 receiving yards and 2 scores.

Third-Quarter Knockout

The Bulldogs piled on with three touchdowns in the third, stretching the lead to 49-0. Isaiah Nwokenkwo added a 21-yard rushing score, and Nero capped his night with a 28-yard burst. Lane avoided the shutout only when John White returned an interception 37 yards for a late score.

Box Score Snapshot

  • Total Yards: AAMU 397 | Lane 155
  • First Downs: AAMU 21 | Lane 11
  • Turnovers Forced: AAMU 7 (most since 2017)
  • Attendance: 9,733 at Louis Crews Stadium

Notes & Streaks

  • AAMU remains unbeaten vs Lane (6-0-1 all-time).
  • Bulldogs have now won 10 straight vs SIAC opponents since 2013.
  • Extended streak to 9 straight games with 1st-quarter points.
  • Barbosa’s 47-yarder ties the longest field goal in the SWAC this year.

In one of the most dramatic HBCU games of the season, Alabama A&M erased a halftime deficit and stunned Tennessee State 23-21 at Nissan Stadium. Alabama A&M leaned on quarterback Cornelious Brown’s arm and Victor Barbosa’s steady leg, proving once again why the Bulldogs are a dangerous force in the SWAC. For the 10,208 fans in attendance, this was more than a September game—it was a statement for HBCU football.

First-Half Momentum

Alabama A&M started hot with an early 10-0 lead behind Brown’s sharp passing. But Tennessee State roared back, using a pair of touchdowns from running back Kendric Rhymes—one on the ground and one through the air—to build a 21-13 halftime advantage.

Brown’s Big Day

Quarterback Cornelious Brown kept Alabama A&M alive with a composed performance. He went 21-of-33 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Travaunta Abner led all receivers with six catches for 104 yards, while Myles Parker and Daveon Walker provided crucial scoring receptions.

Barbosa Delivers in HBCU classic

Special teams made the difference. Victor Barbosa went a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including the 45-yard kick late in the third quarter that sealed the win. His consistency shifted the momentum back to Alabama A&M when the Bulldogs needed it most.

Defensive Impact

The Bulldogs’ defense clamped down in the second half against the Tennessee HBCU. Alabama A&M recorded four sacks, with Wyatt Wright and Kylon Roberts each breaking through at key moments. Joshua Bledsoe’s interception in the fourth quarter stopped a potential TSU drive cold.

Rhymes Shines for TSU

Tennessee State still had bright spots. Kendric Rhymes carried 24 times for 111 yards and caught seven passes for 64 yards with a touchdown. Zack Simmons-Brown added 75 rushing yards and another score, but the Tigers’ offense was silenced after halftime.

Why It Matters

The win lifts Alabama A&M to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SWAC play, providing early confidence as conference action heats up. For Tennessee State, the loss stings as they prepare for OVC competition. This HBCU matchup not only energized the 10,208 fans at Nissan Stadium but also reinforced Alabama A&M’s standing as one of the most resilient programs in the SWAC.

Former Alabama football star and NFL veteran Sam Shade has lived a football life full of twists and turns. From SEC glory to an NFL career, from hauling uniforms to laundromats as a high school coach to hoisting an SIAC trophy at Miles College, Shade has taken the long road to becoming a Division I head coach at an HBCU.

“I’m always going to be where my feet are, and I’m going to do the best job I can do, no matter where I am,” Shade said in an interview with the HBCU Coaches Corner.

That mindset has carried him through a career defined more by persistence than privilege — a grind that prepared him for his new challenge at Alabama A&M.

Alabama Football Roots and an NFL Grind

Shade made his name as a hard-hitting defensive back at Alabama football. He earned respect in one of the nation’s most demanding programs and won a national title in 1992. That toughness carried him to the NFL, where he built a career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington.

Looking back, Shade says his journey was guided by faith.

“When I played pro ball and people say, ‘Hey man, how did you play so many years?’ I tell them, look, that wasn’t my plan. That was God’s plan,” he said.

Still, Shade didn’t lean only on his NFL résumé after retiring. Instead, he started as a high school coach, a move that shaped his philosophy and prepared him for bigger opportunities.

Sam Shade, Alabama football

Laundromats, Lessons, and Miles College Glory

After leaving the NFL, Shade returned home to Birmingham to lead a high school program. The job demanded humility. “When the washer breaks down and you’re taking clothes to the laundromat to wash ’em for practice…that definitely teaches you some things,” he said.

At first, he thought that role might be his last. “I took that job thinking, okay, I’m going to do this till I retire,” Shade recalled. “A lot of people don’t believe that, but that’s the truth.”

However, when Miles College — just minutes from where he grew up — offered him the head coaching position, he knew he couldn’t resist. “I said, man, I can’t pass up this opportunity. I can always go back and be a high school head coach,” he said.

Shade rewarded that leap by turning Miles into a contender. In only his third season, he led the Golden Bears to the SIAC championship. “I wanted to take it places it had never been. I thought it might take a little while to do that, but we had success,” Shade said.

A Different Road to the SWAC

That success brought Shade to Alabama A&M, where he now leads one of the most historic HBCU football programs. “There are some things, some experiences I had at Miles that I’m quite sure will help me tremendously here at Alabama A&M,” he said.

Shade’s climb has looked different from some of his peers. “Sometimes when a guy jumps straight out of the professional ranks as a player and is thrown into a head [coaching job]…that’s tough,” he explained. “For me, it was the right way to go step by step.”

Still, he holds respect for rivals who took alternate routes. He praised Alabama State’s Eddie Robinson Jr., another NFL veteran who became a head coach. “Some guys just have it, man. Coach Rob was one of those players who wanted to know what everybody was doing, why we were doing it. He’s carried that into coaching,” Shade said.

Ready for His Biggest Test

Shade believes every stop along the way prepared him for this moment. “I’m a lot better coach now than when I first got into it,” he reflected. “And I’m a lot better head coach at this point too.”

From Alabama football Saturdays in Tuscaloosa to grinding in the NFL, from washing uniforms just to keep practice alive to celebrating a championship at Miles, Shade has lived every rung of the coaching ladder. Now, he steps into the spotlight of the SWAC with Alabama A&M, determined to show that the long road is the one worth traveling.

“That wasn’t my plan. That was God’s plan,” Shade said.

]]>
Alabama A&M University, a Huntsville, AL-based HBCU, opened its 150th academic year with momentum, welcoming its largest freshman class in years. At the annual Torch Lighting Ceremony, the school introduced 2,157 preliminarily registered first-time freshmen in the Class of 2029, a milestone that reflects both growth and progress.

Male Enrollment Gains in a National HBCU Trend

Perhaps the most remarkable detail of this year’s class is its gender composition. Forty-two percent of Alabama A&M’s incoming freshmen are male students—a significant figure given the ongoing national crisis around Black male enrollment in higher education.

Across the country, women have steadily outpaced men in college enrollment since the mid-1990s, with the gap even wider among Black students. Black men make up only 26 percent of students at HBCUs today, compared to 38 percent in 1976. For Alabama A&M to attract such a high percentage of male students — the majority of them black— in this climate represents a notable achievement.

National data shows that Black men face financial, social, and cultural barriers to higher education, including rising college costs and early discouragement about academic potential. Many HBCUs are working to reverse the trend through mentorship, scholarships, and culturally relevant support systems. Alabama A&M’s results this fall suggest its strategies are making an impact.

A Diverse, Residential Freshman Class

The Class of 2029 reflects both geographic and cultural diversity, with students arriving from 40 states and five countries. Sixty percent of the freshmen will live on campus, double the national average for colleges and universities. University leaders say this creates stronger bonds among students and builds the type of vibrant campus culture that HBCUs have long been known for.

Paving A Wave

The enrollment surge sets the tone for Alabama A&M’s 150th anniversary celebrations, highlighted by the monthlong Bulldog Welcome Experience. Running through September 12, the program features orientation workshops, leadership sessions, and spirited events like the NPHC Yard Show, talent showcases, and the Louis Crews Classic football game.

As Alabama A&M ushers in this milestone year, the success of its freshman class—particularly the enrollment of Black men—signals a promising step forward. At a time when HBCUs are being called upon to close opportunity gaps, Alabama A&M is showing what it looks like to thrive.

The 2025 Alabama A&M Bulldogs are stepping into a new chapter of HBCU football. Under first-year head coach Sam Shadefresh off leading Miles College to the 2024 SIAC title—the Bulldogs have built a roster rooted in regional talent and bolstered by a wave of transfers, particularly from other HBCUs. Shade replaces Connell Maynor and inherits a program eager to reclaim its position in the SWAC.

Alabama Dominates the Map

A close look at the 2025 roster reveals that Alabama remains the heart of Alabama A&M’s recruiting footprint. The Bulldogs feature 56 players from within the state—more than half of the entire roster. That includes standouts from key recruiting hubs such as Birmingham (8), Mobile (7), Madison (5), and Huntsville (3). These numbers reflect Shade’s commitment to building from within state lines.

Beyond Alabama, the Bulldogs also draw significant talent from across the South:

  1. Alabama – 56 players
  2. Florida – 16 players
  3. Georgia – 12 players
  4. Texas – 9 players
  5. Mississippi – 3 players

This regional concentration reinforces Alabama A&M’s identity as a Southern HBCU program with deep roots and recruiting ties across the Sun Belt.

HBCU transfers heavy

Equally striking is the number of college transfers on the roster. By our count, at least 34 players have transferred in from other programs, giving the Bulldogs a blend of experience and maturity that could be crucial in Shade’s first year.

Breakdown by Level

  • FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision): 15 transfers
(e.g., Vanderbilt, UAB, Memphis, Western Michigan)
  • FCS (Football Championship Subdivision): 8 transfers
(e.g., Jackson State, Kennesaw State, Stephen F. Austin)
  • JUCO/Community College: 5 transfers
    (e.g., Lackawanna, Dodge City, Ellsworth)
  • Division II HBCUs: 13 transfers
    • Miles College: 11
    • Fort Valley State: 1
    • Kentucky State: 1

This last category is particularly important. The pipeline from Miles College is the deepest of any single school, with 11 players following Shade from Fairfield to Huntsville. Key names include wide receivers Jaylin Peterson and Franck Pierre, tight end Travaunta Abner, and linebacker Jalen Wright. This group brings not just skill, but familiarity with Shade’s system and expectations.

HBCU-to-HBCU transfers

  • Quarterback Battle: The Bulldogs list five quarterbacks, including FBS transfers like Cornelious Brown IV (UT-Martin/Georgia State) and JD Davis II (Western Michigan). Expect a fierce battle for QB1.
  • In-State Freshman Development: Many of AAMU’s youngest players—particularly linemen and running backs—hail from Alabama. This signals long-term investment in local talent.
  • Big Bodies Up Front: The offensive line features 13 players over 300 pounds, with some topping 350. Clearly, Shade wants to win in the trenches.
  • HBCU-to-HBCU Movement: Players like Duke Miller (Jackson State), Kentrell Lawson (Fort Valley State), and Amahni Spinks (Kentucky State) show how the transfer portal has strengthened inter-HBCU mobility.

Conclusion

The 2025 Alabama A&M roster is a blueprint for modern HBCU football success—regional at its foundation, but strategically constructed with national transfers and HBCU ties. Sam Shade has clearly leaned into relationships built during his time at Miles College, creating continuity while preparing the Bulldogs for a fast rebuild. If this mix of homegrown talent and proven transfers gels, Alabama A&M could surprise the SWAC under its new leadership.

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs were expected to have one of the most competitive HBCU quarterback battles in the SWAC this fall. However, according to a report from Craig Haley, FCS Senior Editor at Stats Perform/The Analyst. That battle might already be shifting. Haley tweeted recently that transfer quarterback Mekhi Hagens has been removed from Alabama A&M’s roster. Citing academic issues from a source close to the program.

The university has not confirmed the report. As of Tuesday afternoon, there had been no official statement from Alabama A&M or first-year head coach Sam Shade.

A Big Loss for AAMU’s Quarterback Room

Hagens, a transfer from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, entered the portal in late April after a brief commitment to Lamar University. The St. Louis native built his reputation as one of the most productive passers in HBCU football during his two seasons with the Golden Lions. In 2024, he ranked second in the SWAC with 2,541 passing yards and third in passing touchdowns (16). He added 134 yards and three scores on the ground, flashing dual-threat ability despite playing for a team that struggled to a combined five wins over two seasons.

Known for his arm strength and fearlessness. Mekhi Hagens threw for over 200 yards in eight games last season, including four multi-touchdown performances. His career totals at UAPB include 3,093 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, while completing just under 50 percent of his passes.

Hagens’ decision to join Alabama A&M was seen as a potential game-changer for a program looking to turn the corner with a new head coach. Shade arrived in Huntsville after leading Miles College to an SIAC title and a playoff run in 2024. The Bulldogs parted ways with longtime head coach Connell Maynor in December. AAMU was looking for a new identity following a 6-6 campaign.

HBCU Mekhi Hagens Alabama A&M
Veteran QB Could Lead AAMU in 2025

If Haley’s report holds, Alabama A&M will lean on veteran quarterback Cornelious Brown IV, who returns with significant experience in the Bulldogs’ system. Brown has flashed potential but has yet to establish himself as a top-tier SWAC quarterback fully. With Hagens out of the picture, the competition for QB1 snaps in Shade’s first season could look very different from what was expected heading into fall camp.

For now, questions remain. Neither Alabama A&M nor Shade has addressed Hagens’ reported removal. This leaves the possibility of further developments open before the 2025 HBCU football season kicks off. But if the report is accurate, a key offseason acquisition may never take the field for the Bulldogs—changing the outlook for their offense before the first snap.

Alabama A&M University has made history by naming Thai Floyd as the first woman to serve as the football team’s full-time play-by-play announcer. Alabama A&M is an HBCU in Huntsville, Alabama, and competes in the SWAC.

Floyd will call Bulldogs games throughout the 2025 season. A proud Florida A&M alumna, she brings years of experience as a broadcast journalist. Most recently, she worked as a digital media specialist for Alabama A&M athletics.

According to her biography, Floyd has covered sports at every level. That includes high school, college, and professional events. Her work has appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia, HBCU Legends on Sports Illustrated, and ESPN’s Andscape. She has also worked for ESPN+ and ESPNU as a sideline reporter and play-by-play commentator. Her assignments have included FBS bowl games and the Celebration Bowl.

Floyd expressed her deep appreciation and sense of purpose for the opportunity:

This opportunity is a dream realized, and I’m deeply grateful to be trusted with it. To be the first woman to serve as the full-time voice of Alabama A&M football — and possibly the first to hold this role at any HBCU — is bigger than me. It’s about legacy, representation, and reminding young Black girls that we belong in every room, every booth, every broadcast.

She went on to honor one of her biggest inspirations:

I’ve looked up to Tiffany Greene for over a decade — she’s poured into me, inspired me, and paved the way. Now, I just hope to continue the work she started and be that same light for someone else.

With this historic appointment, Floyd not only becomes a trailblazer for Alabama A&M in the SWAC, but also a powerful symbol of progress across the HBCU and sports media landscape.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our men’s basketball program to participate in the Ballin at Boutwell event,” said Jackson. “I’m excited to be part of a showcase featuring some of the best schools, players, and coaches in the state. Competing in Birmingham gives our fans, alumni, and supporters a chance to cheer us on early.”

The game will highlight HBCU basketball talent and help build momentum before the regular season.

Basketball Takes Over Birmingham

The Alabama A&M vs. Samford matchup kicks off a full week of games at Boutwell Auditorium:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Auburn vs. Oklahoma State
  • Thursday, Oct. 16 – Alabama (Women’s) vs. Florida State

Known for his disciplined approach and ability to turn programs around, Jackson is expected to elevate AAMU’s competitiveness in the SWAC. His hiring has generated excitement among alumni, fans, and recruits alike, as the Bulldogs look to build a championship-caliber team under his leadership on and off the court.

NEW ORLEANS — On the sidelines, Alabama A&M head women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton is more than a strategist—she’s a whole vibe. Thornton’s presence is impossible to ignore, whether calling plays or calling attention with her bold game day fashion. Her signature looks have racked up over seven million views on Instagram this season alone. Now, the world beyond HBCU basketball is taking notice. Coach Thornton is set to join BeautyCon’s highly anticipated “Play the Game, Get the Look” panel at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans on July 5, a celebration of how style, beauty, and confidence intersect—both on the court and in culture.

This year’s Essence Festival is especially meaningful, marking the 55th anniversary of Essence Magazine under the theme “Made Like This.” BeautyCon’s platform is spotlighting women from the South who are shaping beauty narratives and pushing back against outdated, one-dimensional standards. Thornton embodies that mission perfectly.

Style is an Extension of Self

“My style is definitely an extension of who I am,” Thornton shared. “It’s confident, intentional, and sometimes a little extra—in the best way. That’s how I coach, too. I’m big on presence and energy. Your preparation is your separation. Confidence isn’t just taught—it’s modeled. I want my players to always see that in me.”

For Dawn Thornton, fashion isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a form of leadership. Her dynamic looks send a clear message to her HBCU student-athletes: You can be powerful, poised, and unapologetically yourself.

“I want my players to know it’s okay to stand out, to take pride in how you show up, and to lead with confidence on and off the court,” she said. “You don’t have to dim your light to lead. There’s strength in owning who you are. If I can show up in a bold outfit and handle business, it shows them they can do the same in any space.”

HBCU Essence Festival Dawn Thornton BeautyCon New Orleans
Unapologetically You

In an industry where Black women are often pressured to shrink themselves to fit outdated expectations, Thornton refuses.

“There’s this idea that coaches, especially Black women, have to look or act a certain way to be taken seriously. I don’t subscribe to that,” she said. “I show up as myself—fully—and I coach with passion and excellence. That alone shifts the narrative.”

The “Play the Game, Get the Look” panel will dive deep into how beauty trends born in sports culture influence the wider world, especially in Black communities. The conversation will also explore how looking and feeling good feeds into the mindset of winning—on any stage.

The connection between Dawn Thornton’s HBCU hoops gameday fits and her coaching philosophy is seamless.

“Game day is a whole vibe, and my look is part of the energy I bring,” she explained. “Sometimes the goal is to make a bold statement. Other times, it’s about feeling grounded and confident in my own skin. Either way, it’s part of the game plan. How I show up visually matters just as much as how I show up mentally.”

Essence Festival and BeautyCon will run July 3–6, with daily events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The event promises a vibrant mix of culture, conversation, and community, celebrating Black women in all their power, beauty, and brilliance.

Two HBCUs will step onto a major stage this college basketball season as Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman both appear on Indiana University’s 2025–26 non-conference schedule. Each team will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, to take on the Big Ten powerhouse early in the season.

Alabama A&M begins new era

Alabama A&M opens Indiana’s season on November 5. The Bulldogs are entering a new chapter under head coach Dontae Jackson, who takes over after a successful stint at Grambling State. Last season, A&M finished 10–22, but Jackson brings a reputation for building tough, defensive teams. He aims to inject a winning culture and boost recruiting through his SWAC connections and national network.

Donte Jackson is Alabama A&M’s new basketball coach after turning Grambling State into a SWAC champion two seasons ago.

Bethune-Cookman closes out November

Bethune-Cookman faces Indiana on November 29. The Wildcats are coming off a 17–16 campaign under head coach Reggie Theus, a former NBA All-Star with deep coaching experience. Theus has steadily elevated the program’s credibility and competitiveness. With several key players returning, BCU looks to continue its momentum and won’t shy away from the Big Ten spotlight.

Why These Matchups Matter

For both HBCUs, these games offer more than just competition—they bring visibility, financial support, and a chance to measure up against top-tier talent. Facing Big Ten teams helps prepare HBCU programs for their conference slates while giving players national exposure.

These games also highlight a growing trend. Big Ten schools increasingly schedule HBCUs in non-conference play, often providing much-needed financial boosts for smaller programs through guarantee game payouts.

Embracing the Challenge

With proven coaches like Jackson and Theus leading the way, Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman are ready to represent the HBCU community with pride. Expect both teams to compete hard and make the most of their national stage this season.

Shelomi Sanders is making major moves off the court. The Alabama A&M senior and daughter of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders just announced a meaningful new partnership with The Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ).

Known for their work addressing environmental inequities, CREEJ focuses on providing clean water and proper sanitation to underserved rural areas. Shelomi shared the news via Instagram, shining a light on an issue that often flies under the radar.

“So many communities in the US are still living without basic needs, like clean water or even proper sewer systems,” Sanders wrote. “Not only are [CREEJ] fighting for justice, but they are bringing real change to underserved rural areas.”

The partnership marks another power move in Shelomi’s growing NIL portfolio, which is currently valued at $299,000. She’s already aligned with big-name brands like KFC, Meta, and Savage X Fenty, showing she’s not just building her brand—she’s building purpose.

As she prepares for her senior season with the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Shelomi continues to carve her own lane—balancing hoops, high-profile deals, and now, social impact.

It’s clear that Shelomi Sanders is committed to using her platform for more than just personal wins. She’s stepping up to address real issues, showing that the next generation of HBCU athletes are about more than the game.

Thomas Sorber is officially heading to the NBA. The Oklahoma City Thunder selected him with the 16th overall pick in the NBA Draft. But there’s more to Sorber’s story than his draft night. His family has a deep connection to HBCU basketball.

A Family Built on Basketball and Resilience

The Sorber family’s journey began with hope and hard work. Thomas’s parents immigrated to the United States from Liberia. They escaped civil war in search of a better life.

His mother, Tenneh, raised three children after the death of her husband, Peter Sr., in 2013. She worked long, difficult hours to keep the family strong. Her dedication helped Thomas and his siblings chase their dreams.

Sorber’s Brother Excelled at two HBCU programs

Thomas’s older brother, Peter Sorber, also made his mark in basketball. Peter started his college career at Morgan State University, an HBCU known for its proud athletic tradition. After two years, he transferred to Lincoln University (PA), where he became a standout forward.

Peter thrived at Lincoln. He even won an Athlete of the Week award in his senior season. Inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant, Peter built his game with passion and focus.

His Sister First to Play for an HBCU

Thomas’s oldest sibling, Regina Sorber, was the first to shine on the court. She played for Alabama A&M University, another respected HBCU. Her time as a student-athlete helped pave the way for her brothers.

A Legacy That Lives On

Thomas Sorber now enters the NBA, but his family’s legacy will always be tied to HBCU basketball. His journey is a story of resilience, heritage, and pride.

As he takes his next step with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Sorber carries the strength of his family and the power of their HBCU legacy.

Alabama A&M just made a power move. Head coach Dawn Thornton announced the addition of veteran coach Paul Reed as the program’s new associate head coach. The hire brings high-major experience, a reputation for developing talent, and a Pac-12 résumé packed with postseason success to HBCU women’s basketball on The Hill.

Reed, whose coaching stops include Cal, Washington, and Long Beach State, steps into the Bulldogs’ program with a clear mandate. To elevate the team’s culture and competitiveness in the SWAC.

“We are thrilled to welcome Paul Reed as our Associate Head Coach,” said Thornton. “Paul brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of developing talent and building winning programs. His dedication to fostering strong relationships with players and his commitment to excellence on and off the court make him an invaluable addition to our team.”

This is more than a résumé hire—it’s a statement of intent. A&M is aiming higher.

HBCU Pac-12 Alabama A&M women's basketball Paul Reed
From the Pac-12 to the Hill

Reed spent last season in a support role at St. Mary’s. Still, his most impactful recent work came at the University of Washington. He helped steer the Huskies to a Pac-12 Tournament quarterfinal appearance. That run included a decisive 68–54 upset of No. 6-seed Colorado. At UW, Reed didn’t just collect wins—he developed stars. Three Huskies earned All-Pac-12 honors under his watch, and an impressive 11 players landed spots on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team.

Before Washington, Reed was part of a resurgent Long Beach State program that tallied 69 wins in three seasons, racked up three straight 20-win campaigns, and earned a Big West Tournament title in 2017 to punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament. The years prior brought back-to-back WNIT berths, showcasing his consistency in keeping programs competitive deep into March.

A True Builder

Before his collegiate coaching climb, Reed dominated the Arizona high school basketball scene. At Cienega High School, he went 45–13 in two seasons and was named Southern Arizona Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to a regional title and state runner-up finish in 2014.

Go further back, and the trail continues at Tucson High, where Reed stacked four state tournament appearances, three regional championships, and a 129–63 record across six seasons. He’s been building programs from the grassroots up for decades, mentoring McDonald’s All-American nominees and directing offseason player development for top high school and college athletes in the Tucson area.

And while most know him for his basketball mind, Reed is also a former USA Today Small College All-American defensive back at Langston University, an HBCU in Oklahoma, where he earned his degree in psychology before adding a master’s in education from the University of Phoenix.

Chess Move

This is a high-level chess move for Alabama A&M women’s basketball. Reed isn’t just a sideline veteran—he’s a culture shifter. He’s walked the halls of Power 4 programs, coached in packed March Madness arenas, and still has the recruiting chops to bring top-tier talent into the fold. For an HBCU program looking to make noise in the SWAC and beyond, Paul Reed might be the X-factor.

HBCU Alabama A&M University has seen decades of ticket tracking issues have prompt a major shift in how fans attend sporting events. Beginning this fall, all ticket sales at the HBCU’s athletics events will move to a fully cashless system—a move designed to bring greater transparency and accountability to an area repeatedly flagged in state audits.

The change follows years of audit findings that revealed Alabama A&M’s inability to properly reconcile ticket sales, particularly at high-attendance events like Homecoming. In one example from 2012, auditors found a $1,600 discrepancy between receipts and itemized parking ticket sales. A later audit, spanning 2018 to 2022, revealed that while the university reconciled some game-day sales, it failed to fully account for discounts and complimentary tickets. Auditors concluded the Athletics Department had not maintained full accountability for printed and sold tickets.

HBCU athletics programs often serve as economic and cultural pillars for their institutions, and mishandling revenue from these events can undermine both trust and funding. Alabama A&M’s administration is taking steps to address that.

Alabama A&M,

“When the president hired me, he said, among several priorities, this was a major one,” Athletics Director Paul Bryant told AL.com. “He said, ‘AD Bryant, I need you to fix this system.’”

Since his appointment in 2022, Dr. Bryant has implemented new protocols to overhaul ticketing. His department now reconciles every game’s ticket data within 48 hours and has introduced a complimentary ticket policy. The university has partnered with Hometown, a digital ticketing platform, and internal auditors are now involved in routine oversight.

In line with broader industry trends, the HBCU is also transitioning to a fully digital, cashless system. Fans will use credit cards, Apple Pay, or digital codes on their phones—mirroring experiences at concerts and pro sports events.

“Going cashless makes us that much more accountable for everything that we do,” Dr. Bryant said. “Everything is on the system.”

For HBCUs like Alabama A&M, embracing modern technology is more than convenience—it’s a step toward long-term financial health and institutional trust.

Mekhi Hagens will don a new uniform when he returns to the gridiron for the 2025 HBCU football season. The former Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback committed to Alabama A&M after playing two seasons for the Golden Lions, a rival SWAC school. Hagens’ decision to join the Bulldogs’ program comes after he initially signed with Lamar in February. However, he officially entered the transfer portal on April 29 and elected to bring his talents to Huntsville, Alabama.

HBCU Mekhi Hagens Alabama A&M

“#Committed @CLatsonWrU @Coach__Evans @Coach_Sam_Shade Let’s Do It?,” Hagens tweeted on X, formerly Twitter.

Although UAPB was limited to five victories in two seasons under Golden Lions football coach Alonzo Hampton, Hagens built a name for himself as one of the SWAC’s most prolific passers. He finished the 2024 campaign with the second-most passing yards (2,541) and passing touchdowns (16) behind former Florida A&M signal caller Daniel Richardson. He also rushed for 134 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

The St. Louis native threw for 200 or more passing yards in eight contests and three or more touchdowns in four games last season. In two seasons at UAPB, Hagens tallied 3,093 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 49.4% of his passes.

Mekhi Hagens joins an Alabama A&M program under first-year Bulldogs coach Sam Shade, who starts his HBCU football tenure with the program after leading Miles College to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a second-round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs during the 2024 season.

AAMU hired Shade as head coach after the program parted ways with former head coach Connell Maynor in December after seven seasons leading the program. The Bulldogs finished the 2024 campaign at 6-6 overall and 4-4 in SWAC play.

ATLANTA, Ga. – Students from two distinguished HBCU institutions — Southern University and Alabama A&M University — are making waves in the television and digital media landscape, earning Emmy® nominations for powerful video storytelling that celebrates campus culture, legacy, and creativity.

Southern University’s “The Hidden Sport” Captures the Spirit of the Human Jukebox

Southern University students Verbon Muhammad Jr., Ashley Lovelace, Sydney Cuillier, Loren Sullivan, and Eric White — known as The Dream Team — have been nominated for an Emmy for their documentary The Hidden Sport. The film offers an inside look at the grit, passion, and discipline of the university’s world-renowned Human Jukebox Band.

“We wanted to shed light on the time, the effort, the dedication these musicians invest,” said Cuillier. “They practice just like athletes — that’s where the name ‘The Hidden Sport’ was born.”

The documentary also pays tribute to late band member Caleb Wilson and Coach Sean Wallace, honoring their lasting impact on the university. After months of production, the students completed the project in March 2025. If victorious, the team plans to create a scholarship and donate proceeds to the Human Jukebox Band.

Alabama A&M’s “A Bulldog Family” Brings Rivalry Week to Life

Alabama A&M University also scored its first-ever Emmy nomination for the 2024 video series A Bulldog Family, produced in collaboration with JTWO Films. The series, nominated in the Branded Content – Short Form Content category, showcased the spirited traditions surrounding the Magic City Classic — the most celebrated HBCU football rivalry.

The episodic campaign, featuring five AAMU student actors, garnered over 1 million views and helped expand the university’s brand across social media and Alabama markets. “This was about sharing our story and putting a spotlight on a tradition that defines our university,” said Aaron Thompson, Assistant VP of Marketing.

The videos brought the Willingham household to life with humorous and heartfelt depictions of Bulldog pride, anchored by a fictional patriarch defending AAMU’s honor.

National Recognition for HBCU Storytelling

The Southeast Emmy Awards, hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, celebrates excellence in television and digital media. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on June 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.

These nominations reflect a growing trend of HBCU students using multimedia storytelling to amplify their institutions’ rich traditions and voices — and being recognized on some of the industry’s biggest stages.

New Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Carson Vinson is a rarity among NFL Draft picks these days. The former Alabama A&M lineman was the lone player selected who spent his entire career at an HBCU over the course of the three day NFL Draft when he was selected in the fifth round.

The North Carolina native was at home in Cary with his father, Richard, when he got the call from the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s surreal,” Vinson told HBCU Gameday in an exclusive interview. “I seen the number pop up and I saw the area code. It’s a surreal feeling.”

Vinson started his career as a two-star prospect out of Panther Creek High school, but ended up on a SWAC staff with several coaches with a recruiting pipeline in North Carolina.

“A&M has really been a home for me. They were the ones who took a chance on me, especially being from Cary, NC. None of the big teams here took a chance on me,” Vinson recalled. So coach (Duane) Taylor and coach (Connell)Maynor, they took a chance on me and I really just felt like I owed it to them to stay there those four years. Because that’s who really believed in me first.”

Carson Vinson, Baltimore Ravens, HBCU

At 6’7, 314 pounds with quick feet, Vinson had the chance to hit the portal and play at a bigger school — and definitely one with a bigger bank account. But Vinson exemplified a characteristic that isn’t always associated with star college athletes these days: loyalty.

“That’s the biggest thing that I wanted to show everybody is that you don’t have to go transfer up to schools,” Vinson said of his decision to stay in Huntsville, AL. “You can do it from your HBCU. That’s really what I wanted to show the most about staying from A&M and doing it from A&M is that you don’t have to go chase the money or chase anything else — you can do do it right from your institution.”

He did it all under the watchful eye of his father. Richard Vinson played ball for Jim Tressell at Youngstown State in the late 1980s before transferring to Winston-Salem State University. The younger Vinson credits his father and the rest of his support with giving him the support and perspective that eventually landed him in a Baltimore Ravens jersey.

“I always get good advice from them because they’re going to shoot it to me straight. It’s important to have people that’s going to tell you what’s right and wrong and what’s good and what’s bad for you,” Carson Vinson said. “My dad has been there for me every part of the way.”

Now he will be heading to Baltimore to work towards protecting Lamar Jackson.

Carson Vinson, a standout offensive tackle from HBCU Alabama A&M, was selected in the fifth round (141st overall) of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. His selection marks another important milestone for HBCU football, as Vinson was the first player selected in this draft who played his entire career at his HBCU.

Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 314 pounds, Vinson caught the eyes of NFL scouts throughout the pre-draft process. His strong showing at the Senior Bowl reinforced what HBCU fans had seen for years—a dominant left tackle with NFL potential. Vinson also performed well at the NFL Combine, posting a 5.12-second 40-yard dash and 24 reps on the bench press, further strengthening his case as a mid-round prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Carson Vinson, Baltimore Ravens

During his four-year career at Alabama A&M, Vinson made 48 starts and earned First-Team All-SWAC honors, consistently showcasing the talent that exists across HBCU football. His participation at Alabama’s Pro Day, working out alongside players from one of the top NFL talent factories, helped amplify his exposure to decision-makers ahead of the NFL Draft.

Vinson’s journey shows that there is still a path for athletes who spend their entire careers at HBCUs to get drafted. Strategically using Senior Bowl appearances, NFL Combine invites, and high-profile pro days to boost his profile. His fifth-round selection by the Ravens is not only a personal win but a powerful statement for HBCU players who want to stay where they are and still land in the NFL Draft landscape.

Now he will look to help protect Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.

As more HBCU athletes like Vinson make their way to the next level, their success stories will continue to inspire and motivate others from HBCU programs aiming for the NFL. Baltimore’s decision to invest in Carson Vinson proves that the pipeline from HBCU football to the NFL Draft remains viable, if less traveled.

Roderick Coffee III is taking his talents to Grambling State to play for former FAMU basketball coach Patrick Crarey II, he announced Monday on social media.

The 6-foot-4 guard played in 21 games last season for the Rattlers, averaging 6.0 points while shooting 39.3% from the field, 3.4 assists, 3.9 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per contest. In his two-year FAMU tenure, Coffee played in 58 games while registering 5.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists while shooting 80.4% from the free throw line and 35.6% from the field in nearly 23 minutes per game.

“Let’s rock,” Coffee wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday.

Coffee commits to GSU three days after the program introduced Crarey as the Tigers next men’s basketball coach. In one season at FAMU, Crarey led the Rattlers to their most wins since 2008 and its first SWAC Tournament berth since 2019. Jackson State eliminated FAMU 91-76 in the quarterfinals of the tournament in March.

Crarey replaces former GSU coach Donte Jackson, who departed the program to become the new men’s basketball coach at Alabama A&M. At Grambling, Jackson led the Tigers to three SWAC regular-season titles in eight seasons and a trip to the 2024 men’s NCAA Tournament.

THE HILL | Alabama A&M University President Dr. Daniel K. Wims and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant welcomed new AAMU head men’s basketball coach Donte’ Jackson during an introductory press conference at the Alabama A&M University Event Center on the campus of the HBCU.

“We welcome a coach with an outstanding resume, one that has won at the highest levels,” Dr. Bryant said. Jackson, who has compiled a 263-185 career record in 15 seasons, is a three-time Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Coach of the Year honoree, guiding Grambling State to three regular-season conference titles in eight seasons, including a trip to the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Excited to be on the Hill

“I’m incredibly thankful to Dr. Wims and Dr. Bryant for this opportunity,” Jackson said. “I am excited to be on The Hill and look forward to bringing a winning culture to this outstanding institution. I’m a program builder. It’s time to build this program into one of the best programs in the SWAC, the state, the region, and the nation…It’s time to build something that Bulldog Nation can be proud of… It’s time to build a winner, a championship program that can compete for titles each year.”

Jackson established himself as one of the best coaches in the HBCU conference during his first season at Grambling State. Where he helped the program win its first SWAC Regular Season Championship in nearly 30 years (1988-1989). During the regular season, Grambling State enjoyed the national spotlight as one of the teams in NCAA Division I with the longest winning streak, which reached as high as 11 games before a loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Success with a Rival

The Tigers reached new highs under Jackson during the 2022-23 HBCU basketball campaign. They finished the season 24-9, tallying their most wins in a single season since joining Division I in 1977.

GSU also defeated two Power 5 teams for the first time in school history. Earning wins over Colorado and Vanderbilt. The Tigers won the SWAC Regular Season Title and reached the 2023 SWAC Championship Game. Jackson produced the SWAC Player of the Year in Cameron Christon and won the coveted SWAC Coach of the Year Award.

Donte’ Jackson reached the pinnacle of the SWAC during the 2023-24 season, leading GSU to its first-ever SWAC Tournament Championship win and berth in the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament. The Tigers went 21-15 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Grambling State defeated Texas Southern 75-66 in the SWAC Title game. GSU went on to defeat Montana State 88-81 in the NCAA First Four before falling to top-seeded Purdue in the first round.

Alabama Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, voiced his concern when he found out that state lawmakers proposed the idea to cut funding for the annual Magic City Classic football game and several other signature items. The HBCU football clash between Alabama State and Alabama A&M takes place annually at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

While the popular HBCU classic showcases a pivotal battle for statewide bragging rights on the gridiron, it also draws record crowds, celebrates the tradition of both programs and creates a massive economic impact for the community.

Community Impact

In 2024, city leaders in Birmingham projected that the game and its festivities would generate more than $20 million in economic impact for the city, according to WBRC-TV. Even more, the game one that was played on Oct. 26 — was the 10th busiest day of the year in the Magic City.

“If anybody thinks that’s going to happen [cutting funding] and I’m not going to be at this mic from this moment until we leave, you can forget it,” Smitherman said, per AL.com. “I will be right here.”

The state’s proposed $3.7 billion budget included $200,000 for next year’s MCC. However, when the House Ways and Means General Fund Committee approved the General Fund budget on Tuesday, it axed out the funding for the annual classic. Rep. Rex Reynolds, R-Huntsville one of the chairmen of the state’s House Ways and Means General Fund Committee said the proposed move to cut events like the MCC was part of Alabama’s initiative to prioritize “budgeting” and “get back to funding state agencies.”

“As you saw when [Gov. Kay Ivey’s] budget came over, all of the one-time appropriations was removed from the budget,” Reynolds said, per AL.com.

Smitherman and Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, convened with Reynolds and the state’s additional General Fund chairman, Sen. Greg Albrittion, R-Atmore, to discuss the proposed budget. When Smitherman took the senate floor later Tuesday afternoon, the veteran lawmaker said the Magic City Classic issue, along with others, would be reviewed.

Changes to the Budget

Singleton also confirmed to AL.com that changes would take place to the budget. However, he was not given a timeline on when they would come to fruition. State lawmakers have 12 meeting days left in its annual session, one that runs until May.

According to the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, nearly 70,000 fans attended the Magic City Classic in 2024, keeping its tradition of being one of the most-attended HBCU football games of the year. If funding for MCC is cut off, it would limit the overall impact of the annual event, which Smitherman labeled as part of the state’s diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

As a result, Smitherman said he would exercise the Senate’s filibuster rules to shed light on the importance of this event as well as proposed cuts to other related items in the budget. “… If it [cutting funding] does [happen], it will happen with the most resistance using our rules and procedures that I can use in this body,” Smitherman said.

Alabama A&M is set to make a big hire in the HBCU basketball landscape, as it prepares to announce Grambling State’s Donte’ Jackson as its next head men’s basketball coach. The news was first reported by HBCU Sports and confirmed by an HBCU Gameday source. Jackson will take over for Otis Hughley, who resigned last month after three seasons at the helm in Huntsville.

Jackson brings a deep well of experience across the HBCU coaching ranks. A Milwaukee native, he spent the last seven seasons at Grambling State, where he compiled a 120-102 record and won a SWAC Tournament Championship in 2024, earning the program its first NCAA Tournament appearance in over three decades. However, Grambling took a step back in 2024-2025, finishing 12-22 overall and 7-11 in SWAC play.

Before Grambling State, Jackson made his mark at Stillman College, leading the program to a 27-6 record and a DII second-round appearance in 2015-16. He also had a successful run at Central State, establishing himself as a rising name in the HBCU coaching ranks early in his career.

Danté Jackson, Grambling State

With a career coaching record of 246-166 and a SWAC Tournament record of 9-5, Jackson is known for his ability to build programs and compete for championships. His 2022-23 Grambling team went 24-9 and finished tied for first in the league, showcasing his ability to bring consistency and success to HBCU programs.

Now, Jackson takes over an Alabama A&M program seeking to climb the SWAC standings. His appointment signals that Alabama A&M is aiming high and investing in a proven winner within the HBCU basketball fraternity. The move keeps one of the SWAC’s most experienced coaches in the league, as the HBCU basketball coaching carousel continues to turn.

Grambling State, meanwhile, will have to find another head coach.

Alabama A&M University has earned recognition as a Research College and University (RCU) in the newly redesigned Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. This milestone achievement reflects the University’s commitment to advancing research through the innovative work of its HBCU faculty and students.

The Carnegie Classifications, established as the leading framework for categorizing accredited, degree-granting institutions in the U.S., have been redesigned by the American Council on Education (ACE) to better acknowledge the diversity and depth of research across higher education institutions.

The 2025 framework includes three key research designations: Research 1 (R1) for institutions with very high research expenditures and substantial doctoral production, Research 2 (R2) for institutions with high research activity, and Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) for institutions demonstrating research engagement at varying levels.

What it means for AAMU

“The 2025 Carnegie Classification’s Research and University aims to highlight research activity at institutions that have historically been overlooked due to lower numbers of doctoral graduates,” said Dr. Majed Dweik, Vice President of Research & Economic Development. “By setting a research expenditure threshold of at least $2.5 million annually, this classification ensures that universities like Alabama A&M receive well-deserved recognition for their contributions to research and development.”

Alabama A&M University has a longstanding tradition of research excellence at the HBCU, spanning multiple disciplines:

HBCU Alabama A&M University Carnegie RCU

Engineering and Computer Science: Researchers are driving advancements in quantum computing, magnetics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, integrated circuit microelectronics/semiconductor design, fabrication, and testing (Chips), space propulsion and engineering, nuclear engineering thermal sciences, and material science and nanotechnology, including energy harvesting and computational sciences.

Education and Healthcare: Researchers are addressing critical societal challenges through projects such as the Alabama Recruit and Retain Minority Teacher Program, the Let Us Build Bridges Study Abroad Project in Zambia, and the $3.6 million Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program.

Business and Public Affairs: Researchers are conducting impactful societal research on economic mobility, gender equality, STEM education participation, and much more.

AAMU faculty and leadership are optimistic that this RCU designation will attract top-tier students and researchers while enhancing the global research reputation of the HBCU. The University is actively pursuing the R2 designation, with current research expenditures for 2024 reaching $16.248 million – exceeding the R2 research expenditure threshold by $11.248 million.

“This new distinction spotlights our University’s emphasis on impact and discovery through diverse research activity. Thanks to the ongoing work of our faculty and staff to expand research across the institution, we are well-positioned in our efforts to reach R2 classification in the near future,” said President Daniel K. Wims.

According to Sleeper Athletes Ladies Basketball, HBCU women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton of Alabama A&M has been linked as a potential candidate to become an SEC head coach. Rumors have her name circulating as a candidate to become the next women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas.

The report concerning Thornton comes nearly a week after the Bulldog’s HBCU hoops season ended in the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament in Atlanta. While a report has surfaced for Thornton as a potential candidate for the Razorbacks’ job, no official confirmation has surfaced that the Bulldogs’ coach is taking her talents back to The Natural State.

HBCU women’s basketball Dawn Thornton Alabama A&M

Former Arkansas women’s basketball coach Mike Neighbors resigned from his coaching duties on March 11 after eight seasons leading the Razorbacks’ program.

20 wins in year one

Dawn Thornton recently finished her first season at AAMU, guiding the Bulldogs to a 21-10 record overall and a 14-4 mark in SWAC play. Before her first year at AAMU, she spent five seasons as the women’s basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, three seasons at Prairie View and one season at Division II Shorter University. During non-conference action in the 2023-24 season, Thornton led UAPB to a 74-70 victory against Arkansas.

AAMU finished third in the SWAC regular season standings in the 2024-25 campaign and earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s SWAC tournament. However, Alcorn State defeated AAMU 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the league’s postseason event. Despite the Bulldogs’ loss to the Braves, Thornton told reporters that she was excited about her team’s success this season — one that saw the program notch its first 20-plus win season at the Division I level — and was optimistic about the future of the program.

“We’re gonna get in the portal,” said Thornton after AAMU’s loss in the SWAC tourney quarterfinals. “That’s what my staff does. … We’ll go back and we’ll rebuild this team [Alabama A&M] next year. The thing that we will do differently, we’re gonna be able to get some kids that have more than one year. So we will do that as well.”

While the Bulldogs did not secure the automatic bid to the women’s NCAA tournament, the 20-win HBCU squad earned an at-large bid in the field of 48 teams competing in this year’s Women’s National Invitational Tournament, the program’s first appearance in the postseason event.

AAMU will travel to face SoCon foe Chattanooga (16-14) on March 22 at 2 p.m. ET at McKenzie Arena. The Bulldogs-Mocs contest winner will face Troy in the tournament’s second round.

Carson Vinson, a standout HBCU football offensive tackle from Alabama A&M University, has been making big strides in his pursuit of an NFL career. Standing at an imposing 6-foot-7 and weighing 314 pounds, Vinson’s physical attributes have garnered attention from scouts and analysts alike. After standout performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine. Vinson participated in the pro day with Alabama football, one of the top NFL-producing programs in the country. Giving scouts a more intimate look at one of HBCU football’s best alongside some of the top prospects in the 2025 NFL draft.

Collegiate Career at Alabama A&M

Vinson’s tenure at Alabama A&M was marked by consistency and excellence. As a four-year starter at left tackle, he anchored the Bulldogs’ offensive line, participating in 48 career starts. His performance in the 2024 season earned him First-Team All-SWAC honors. Solidifying his status as one of the best in HBCU football.

Senior Bowl Performance

Vinson’s invitation to the 2025 Senior Bowl allowed him to showcase his skills against top-tier talent. Throughout the practices, he impressed observers with his physicality and technique. “I’m not some charity case, just happy to be here.” Vinson told reporters after the first day of practice at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. “One big thing was my competition and my weight… And I came here and weighed in at a good weight, and that brings confidence. And when you have to strengthen your focus and strengthen your hands when you come here to basically compete against the best. So it was great to show NFL scouts what my skill set was.”

NFL Combine Results

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Vinson continued to display his athleticism and strength.

  • 40-yard dash: 5.12 seconds
  • Vertical jump: 28.5 inches
  • Broad jump: 9 feet 3 inches
  • Bench press: 24 reps
  • Three-cone drill: 7.85 seconds

Draft Projections

Analysts have noted Vinson’s potential as a developmental tackle in the NFL. His size, length, and athleticism position him well for the next level. While some projections have listed him as the 37th offensive lineman, suggesting a sixth-round selection. His recent performances could elevate him to a mid-round pick. Jordan Reid, former NCCU quarterback turned NFL analyst, reported, “Scouts were complimentary after his performance at the Senior Bowl and Combine with mid-round grades.”

Participation in Alabama’s Pro Day

In a strategic move to further elevate his visibility, Carson Vinson participated in the University of Alabama’s Pro Day on March 19, 2025. This event attracted a significant number of NFL scouts, coaches, and general managers, providing Vinson with a broader platform to demonstrate his capabilities. His decision to work out at a larger program’s pro day underscores a growing trend among HBCU players seeking increased exposure with NFL scouts.

HBCU Representation at Pro Days

Vinson’s participation at Alabama football’s Pro Day highlights the need to increase visibility for HBCU athletes who want to hear their names called at the NFL Draft. By attending pro days at larger programs, these players can demonstrate their skills to more scouts and get more one-on-one time with pro evaluators. Giving them a chance to form a personal connection with NFL decision-makers beyond just the bullet points of individual measurables. This approach is a strategic effort to bridge the exposure gap between HBCU athletes and those from more prominent programs. Potentially improving their draft prospects.

Carson Vinson’s journey from Alabama A&M to the cusp of an NFL career. Speaks to the determination and strategic planning of HBCU football players looking to go pro. His collegiate achievements and strong performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine have positioned him as a notable prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. But Vinson continues to leverage opportunities like Alabama’s Pro Day to further his chances of advancing his career to the next level. A process that future HBCU athletes may follow.

The largest HBCU football game of the year — the Magic City Classic — will now be sponsored by Amazon.

The game between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University will be known as the Amazon Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola, officials announced on Thursday. McDonald’s was the previous title sponsor.

“This four-year partnership represents a shared commitment to education, diversity and economic growth in our community,” said Perren King, the executive director of the Magic City Classic. “We look forward to working with Amazon to elevate the Classic experience for our fans and the broader HBCU family.”

The Magic City Classic has been a staple in Birmingham for more than 80 years, but the last few years have seen a push to get more money to the institutions. Alabama A&M sent promoters a cease-and-desist back in 2023 as terms were re-negotiated. Alabama A&M signed on to receive $1 million when the Bulldogs are designated as the home team, and $300,000 when they are visitors. Alabama State signed a four-year agreement to receive $1.5 million during the years that it is the home team. Adding in $500,000 annually to each of the institutions, the two schools are set to receive an average of $1.5 million over four years.

“Through this partnership with the Magic City Classic, we’re celebrating HBCUs as a legacy of excellence while investing in tomorrow’s leaders,” said Donetta Houser-Sly, HR Director, Amazon North America People Experience & Technology. “This historic game isn’t just about football — it’s about community, opportunity, and the endless possibilities that arise when tradition meets innovation.”

The post NFL dreams at risk for FCS players who bypass transfer portal appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
The route for HBCU and other non-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football players seeking to achieve their NFL dreams could become even harder in the future due to the impact of the transfer portal and lack of access to the annual NFL combine, according to a recent ESPN report.

Some of the greatest NFL players like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice, Aeneas Williams, Shannon Sharpe and Michael Strahan played at HBCUs – today’s Football Championship Subdivision level programs – before dominating at the NFL level. However, when the Pro Football Hall of Famers played in college, they didn’t have access to name, image and likeness nor were they forced to deal with the impact of the transfer portal.

Only seven (FCS) players were invited to the 2025 NFL Combine nearly a week ago in Indianapolis. With the seismic changes to the transfer portal that took place ahead of the 2021 college football season, along with last year’s amendment to the transfer rule of allowing programs unlimited players to transfer without penalties (barring they met academic obligations), it has resulted in fewer FCS players receiving an invite to the NFL’s weeklong showcase at Lucas Oil Stadium due to the perception of more NFL-ready talent at the FBS ranks.

NFL red flags for non-transfers?

Zach McKinnell, editor and owner of FCS Football Central, reported Tuesday on X (formerly known as Twitter) that multiple scouts from professional football teams who attended the Senior Bowl and HBCU Legacy Bowl revealed that FCS prospects who choose to remain at the FCS level instead of darting for FBS programs are labeled as “potential red flags” at the next level.

“Were they scared of better competition, are they not good enough to play at that level?” McKinnell tweeted.

ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler reported that an average of 20.5 players from smaller non-FBS programs received invites to the combine between 2016 to 2021, prior to changes to the transfer portal. However, the mean number of players has dropped to 14.5 since 2022, the lowest mark in the last decade.

Even more, no players from the Division II or the Division III ranks earned invites to the last two combines. But prior to changes to the transfer rule, an average of 3.5 sub-FCS players earned combine invites from 2015 to 2021, per the report.

The report also indicated that 126 of the 330 players who received invites to the combine transferred at some level of college football at least once, with many of the players taking their talents to programs on the same level. Additionally, 28 of those 330 have transferred no less than once from a non-FBS program. Compare that to the 2018 combine, an event where only two players among 336 invited players transferred to a higher-level college football program – meaning NAIA to D-II or FCS to FBS – after playing at a non-FBS program.

Some of the higher-profile HBCU prospects hoping to hear their names called in this year’s NFL draft include Alabama A&M’s Carson Vinson and Donovan Eaglin, Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan and Robert McDaniel, Florida A&M’s Kendall Bohler, Howard’s Jarrett Hunter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers, Hampton’s Elijah Burris, South Carolina State’s Aaron Smith and Alabama State’s James Burgess, to name a few.

The 2025 NFL draft will take place April 24-26 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Carson Vinson, a standout offensive tackle from Alabama A&M, an HBCU in Huntsville, Alabama, has been making waves in the lead-up to the 2025 NFL Draft. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 305 pounds, Vinson’s impressive physical attributes and on-field performance have garnered attention from scouts and analysts alike. Vinson’s journey to the NFL Combine is particularly noteworthy as he was the first HBCU prospect to receive a Senior Bowl invite this year.

His participation in the Senior Bowl provided him with a platform to showcase his skills against top-tier talent, further solidifying his reputation as one of the premier FCS tackles in this draft class.

During the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine, Vinson continued to impress. He recorded an official 40-yard dash time of 5.12 seconds, demonstrating notable speed for a player of his size.

Analysts have praised his thick, rugged build, good length, and heavy hands, all of which contribute to his physical, aggressive playing style.

Despite his achievements, Vinson’s draft projections vary. Some sources rank him as the 37th offensive lineman, projecting him as a sixth-round pick.

However, his performances at both the Senior Bowl and the Combine have likely improved his stock, making the Alabama A&M alum a potential mid-round selection.

Vinson’s participation in these high-profile events underscores his readiness to transition to the professional level. As the lone current HBCU player at the Combine, he carries the aspirations of many, aiming to pave the way for future prospects from similar backgrounds.

Carson Vinson’s blend of physical attributes, competitive performances, and resilience positions him as an intriguing prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft. Teams seeking a physically imposing and aggressive offensive tackle may find Vinson to be a valuable addition to their roster. Vinson is aiming to become the first HBCU player to be selected in the NFL Draft since former Jackson State defensive back Isaiah Bolden was taken by the New England Patriots in 2023.

Thirty years after his stint as an NFL prospect out of Alabama football, Sam Shade is having a full-circle moment at the HBCU Legacy Bowl.

The newly minted head coach of Alabama A&M University is one of the coaches at the showcase event for HBCU talent — and he’s not taking it lightly.

“It’s special I’m truly honored and humbled to be here amongst some of the greatest of the game — not just HBCU but NFL guys like Shack Harris and Doug Williams — that’s an honor,” Shade told New Orleans Saints Media.

Shade has yet to coach a game at Alabama A&M — he was hired in December — but he earned his spot into coaching at the fourth iteration of the game at Miles College. In three seasons he took the Fairfield, AL-based HBCU from a one-win rebuild job to an SIAC champion and won the program’s first-ever Division II playoff game.

Sam Shade, Miles College, NFL

As one of the coaches of Team Robinson — named after Grambling State legend Eddie Robinson — Shade will get a chance to coach Miles offensive lineman Christian Twymon one last time. But he won’t be the only player that Shade has coached in New Orleans this week.

“A big part of this week is also the career fair that the HBCU Legacy Bowl puts on. That’s a great event,” Shade said. “We’ve got a couple players here from Miles College — where I coached before — that are looking forward to it. They’ve got their resumes right, they’ve got their gear ready for it to maybe land a job outside of football.”

Shade will be working with Jackson State head coach T.C. Taylor who is coming off an 11-2 season in his second year, guiding Jackson State football to the Celebration Bowl.

“I was very happy for him that they were able to win it in the SWAC conference that I’m in now. I’m excited to be in it, but it does present a huge challenge on that SWAC East side of things,” Shade said with a smile. “I’m going to enjoy this week with T.C. and hey, at some point during the season, we’ll get the chance to compete against each other. But he’s done a tremendous job and got a really good football team and it’s an honor for me to be a part of the conference.”

THE HILL – Alabama A&M University revealed its 2025 HBCU football schedule. The 12-game schedule features a visit to an SEC opponent, three classic games, and trips to Nashville, Tenn., and Houston, Texas.

Alabama A&M, which went 6-6 overall last season and 4-4 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, begins the 2025 season during Labor Day weekend as the Bulldogs visit Arkansas. This will be the first-ever meeting between AAMU and the Razorbacks.

One week later, Alabama A&M will have its home opener in the 15th Annual Louis Crews Classic as Alcorn State comes to town for a non-conference game. The Bulldogs return to the road the following week, visiting Tennessee State in the Legacy Series as the two programs will be meeting for the first time since 2010.

The Maroon and White will step out of Division I action for a week as AAMU plays host to Lane College on Sept. 21, before returning to the road for the next two games.

Alabama A&M will travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. to open SWAC play against Bethune-Cookman, closing out the month of September, and will begin October with the annual Gulf Coast Challenge against Jackson State at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The Bulldogs’ 2025 homecoming game will be the following week (Oct. 11) as AAMU plays host to Mississippi Valley State.

After an open week, the Bulldogs play their final neutral-site game in the annual Magic City Classic against rival Alabama State. AAMU closes out the final month on the road against Grambling State, before playing host to Prairie View A&M and Florida A&M in back-to-back weeks.

The Bulldogs will wrap up their 2025 HBCU football campaign on the road as Alabama A&M travels to Houston to visit Texas Southern.

Alabama A&M offensive tackle Carson Vinson was the lone NFL Draft prospect from an HBCU at the Reese’s Senior Bowl practice on Tuesday and he left a big impression going up against SEC talent.

Vinson stands tall on his own — he’s 6’6, 317 pounds. But his play still took some by surprise.

“I think it went great — I think I played to my standard. A lot of outside people would say I had a great, amazing day. I just had a Carson Vinson Day for me,” Vinson told The Draft Network. “That’s just what I do, that’s what my standard is. I think I competed well and did what I needed to do. I just gotta do the same for the next couple of days. “

Vinson was a dominant force on the offensive line for Alabama A&M. That counts for something, but his performance against players from SEC schools like LSU and Texas A&M. Vinson is aware that this is how he will be measured when it comes to the NFL Draft.

Carson Vinson, NFL Draft, HBCU, SEC, NFL

“It was very important because as a small-school guy, that’s the biggest question is competition-wise. I just wanted to show that HBCUs we’ve got dawgs at HBCUs. We got dawgs at FCS and we compete, we play. I’m not a charity case — I’m here to play football.”

Vinson also got a chance to go up against future NFL talent over the last few years as his HBCU took on Auburn and Vanderbilt in the 2024 and 2023 season openers.

The self-described football “addict” will spend the rest of the week practicing against top level talent in preparation for the Reese’s Senior Bowl at the end of the week.

Deion Sanders made a splash when he made a surprise appearance at his daughter’s HBCU basketball game on Saturday. Afterward he spoke briefly in the Alabama A&M locker room after the Lady Bulldogs victory over Alabama State.

“Congratulations ladies y y’all did the dog gone thing, Y’all came out tripping a little bit but slowly and surely y’all got it together. Coach had to get in your buts, some of y’all, but you pulled it out,” Sanders said to the team.

Then he pointed out the play of Alabama A&M forward Alisha Wilson, one of the top rebounders in HBCU women’s basketball. She is second in the SWAC averaging 9.9 boards per game.

“You ain’t no joke. You are a dog, I love you,” Sanders said pointing at Wilson.

The two shared a quick hug as her teammates cheered and smiled. Deion Sanders continued on with his address to the team.

“Coach you did the dog gone thing. I like the adjustments you made late, you went to the two bigs at the end, I like that. I’m proud of y’all. I wanted y’all to win because I wanted my baby girl to be happy. She was already mad because I told her I wasn’t coming, she told me she cried today, but she knows I’ll never let her down,” Sanders said.

Alabama A&M is 11-6 overall, with a 4-1 record in SWAC play.

Wilson leads the team in rebounding and blocks and is the third leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game.

During the game versus Alabama State, Wilson surpassed career records of 1,000 rebounds, 1,000 points and 100+ blocks.

Deion Sanders made a surprise appearance on Saturday afternoon to take in some HBCU basketball and see his daughter. Shelomi Sanders, the youngest child of the former Jackson State coach, plays for Dawn Thornton on the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team.

“Surprised my Babygirl @shelomisanders yesterday at Alabama A&M! It was epic and they won. The HBCU atmosphere was all that. Dr. Bryant thank u helping me make yesterday happen for my baby! Love all y’all that showed me love. God bless,” Sanders wrote on Instagram.

Shelomi is in her first season with Alabama A&M after transferring from Colorado last season where she was on campus with her father. Sanders began her career at Jackson State before leaving for Colorado when Deion Sanders accepted the job there.

Alabama A&M was at home against arch-rival Alabama State, the Lady Bulldogs won 54-47. Sanders logged seven minutes in the game, missing all three of her field goal attempts but she managed a steal and one assist. Sanders has scored 26 points in 17 games played this season.

The father and daughter hugged along the sideline after the game with Shelomi seeming to shed a tear as the two laughed and talked.

Deion Sanders has an interesting history with both of the Alabama based HBCU programs. Jackson State famously left a pink scooter at midfield after defeating AAMU back in October 2021. The gag gift was a result of a back and forth between Sanders and then coach Connell Maynor leading up to the game. Sanders was also involved in the infamous “bro hug shove” from Alabama State coach Eddie Robinson Jr. during his time at Jackson State after a win in Montgomery. But those rivalries have long since passed and Saturday’s appearance was well received as a tender moment between Deion and Shelomi Sanders.

Sam Shade, a former Alabama football standout and seasoned coach, has taken the reins as Alabama A&M University’s 22nd head football coach. With deep ties to Alabama football and a strong commitment to HBCU athletics, Shade’s vision is rooted in developing a championship-caliber program on and off the field while fostering growth in every facet of his players’ lives.

“Da Chase is on,” Shade declared, emphasizing his program’s philosophy, “Da Chase.” It stands for discipline, accountability, character, habits, attitude, sacrifice, and excellence. These core values will shape every aspect of Alabama A&M football, from the classroom to the gridiron.

Commitment to Excellence in Alabama and beyond

Shade’s journey in Alabama football, from winning a national championship with the Crimson Tide in 1992 to coaching at various levels, positions him uniquely to lead the Bulldogs. He is no stranger to the state’s competitive football culture, having recruited extensively across Alabama during his time at Miles College, where 71% of his roster hailed from the state.

“We will start locally,” he said of recruiting efforts, focusing on building relationships with high schools in Alabama and extending outreach to neighboring states. Shade stressed the importance of identifying and nurturing homegrown talent, ensuring that the Bulldogs’ roster reflects the rich football heritage of the region.

A Championship Mindset

“Ultimately, my vision is to develop a championship football program on and off the field,” Shade stated. He outlined ambitious goals: winning the annual game at Birmingham’s Legion Field, securing the SWAC East title, hosting the SWAC Championship Game at Louis Crews Stadium, and capturing the Celebration Bowl title to become HBCU national champions.

Shade’s championship aspirations are underpinned by his belief in relentless improvement. “Even after we win a championship, we’ll continue to work on improving and making it better,” he promised. His philosophy extends beyond football, aiming to increase university enrollment and enhance campus and community life through the program’s success.

“Da Chase” Philosophy

The foundation of Shade’s vision is “Da Chase,” a framework that instills core values in his players. He emphasized discipline as the cornerstone, beginning with simple practices like punctuality. Accountability and trust are equally important, creating a cohesive team culture where everyone’s contributions matter.

“Football is the biggest athletic program on a college campus,” Shade noted. “Everybody’s important—from trainers to equipment staff. When we win, everybody gets a ring.”

The other pillars of “Da Chase”—character, habits, attitude, sacrifice, and excellence—reflect Shade’s dedication to holistic development. He highlighted the importance of shaping players into well-rounded individuals who succeed both on the field and in life.

A Bright Future for Alabama A&M Football

Shade’s history in Alabama football and commitment to the HBCU community resonate in his plans to elevate AAMU. He called on alumni, boosters, and fans to rally behind the program, urging them to show their support by attending games and embracing the vision.

With Sam Shade at the helm, Alabama A&M football is poised to chase greatness—not just in championships, but in creating a legacy of excellence that uplifts the entire university community.

Sam Shade, a former Alabama football standout and national champion, has been named the new head football coach at Alabama A&M University. The announcement, made by Director of Athletics Dr. Paul Bryant on the From the Hill Podcast, positions Shade to lead the Bulldogs in their quest to return to prominence within the FCS and the HBCU football landscape.

Shade, who played a pivotal role in Alabama football’s success during his collegiate career, brings a wealth of experience as both a player and coach. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Shade helped the Crimson Tide capture the 1992 national championship before embarking on an eight-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins.

“People love people who have played and went to Alabama,” Dr. Bryant said. “He’s going to have another fanbase that is going to be able to support some of the efforts that we need to have supported at Alabama A&M.

Since transitioning from playing to coaching, Shade has built an impressive resume. He served on the staffs of Samford University, Georgia State University, and the Cleveland Browns. At Pinson Valley High School, he guided the program to a state championship, showcasing his ability to build winning teams. Most recently, Shade transformed Miles College’s football program, taking a 1-9 team in 2022 to a 10-3 record and a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) title in 2024. Under his leadership, the Golden Bears also advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Alabama A&M, Sam Shade

Shade’s ties to Alabama football and the state itself played a key role in Alabama A&M’s decision. Dr. Bryant highlighted Shade’s ability to recruit top talent throughout the region. “Sam has deep connections across Alabama and a proven track record of identifying and developing players. His background with Alabama football and his work at Miles College show he understands what it takes to build a championship program.”

In addition to his football expertise, Shade’s experience at HBCUs was a critical factor in his hiring.

For Sam Shade, taking over the Alabama A&M program represents an opportunity to make his mark in the FCS. With the Bulldogs looking to return to their winning ways, Shade’s leadership and Alabama football pedigree bring a renewed sense of optimism to the program.

“The resources, the hold in the state of Alabama is what sold us as well,” Bryant continued. “He has vast resources in the state of Alabama, where he recruits all across the state. And he has connections everywhere. And then not only in the state, but all across the country.”

Alabama A&M fans and alumni are eager to see what the future holds under the leadership of the former Alabama football star, as Shade prepares to bring his championship mentality to Huntsville.

A week after former two former NFL stars were hired as HBCU coaches, Ed Reed may be next.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer is reportedly one of the finalists for the head coach opening at Alabama A&M, according to Football Scoop. The SWAC school is looking to replace Connell Maynor, who was fired after seven years at the helm late last month.

If he is named the new head coach at the HBCU, it would be a job more than two years in the making. He was chosen as Bethune-Cookman’s head football coach in late 2022 but never coached a game. His offer was eventually rescinded following several profanity-laced social media posts where he berated conditions in the aftermath of a major hurricane that caused damaged to the Daytona, FL school.

Ed Reed, HBCU
Ed Reed’s short stint at Bethune-Cookman hasn’t kept him from talking to HBCUs about football jobs.

“I was to be the coach – I was never the coach,” Reed told former Miami teammate Edgerrin James earlier this year on the “Create The Life Podcast.” “I never signed a contract. I never got fired like everybody said.”

Since then, Reed’s name has popped up in multiple HBCU football searches, but he has yet to officially be named and introduced as a head coach. Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley are the only two remaining HBCU Division I football jobs opening after NFL stars were hired in the past week. Michael Vick was hired by Norfolk State University and DeSean Jackson was named head coach at Delaware State University.

Connell Maynor’s time at Alabama A&M is done.

The school announced on Monday that it has “relieved” Connell Maynor of his head coaching role after seven seasons at the helm.

“We want to thank Connell Maynor for his seven seasons at Alabama A&M University,” AAMU AD Dr. Paul Bryant said “We wish him well in all his future endeavors.”

Mayor went 40-32 during his tenure at Alabama A&M. He led the team to one SWAC title during the abbreviated spring season in 2021.

He had four winning seasons in a row to start his career, including the abbreviated spring season. However, the program has gone 15-19 since 2022, including a 6-6 record during the 2024 season.

Maynor arrived in Huntsville in 2018 following a four-year stint at Hampton University.

In 2014, Maynor was hired as the head coach at Hampton University, where he guided the Pirates in their final years in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) before the program transitioned to the Big South Conference. During his time at Hampton (2014–2017), Maynor led the team to a competitive record and helped develop talent while navigating the challenges of conference realignment.

Maynor’s head coaching career started off in a big way at Winston-Salem State University. He led the program to a 45-6 record during his time at WSSU, winning back-to-back CIAA titles in 2011 and 2012, going undefeated in both regular seasons — and culminating in a 2012 national championship game appearance.

A national search for the program’s next head coach will begin immediately, according to Alabama A&M’s release.

The Alabama A&M University Bulldogs traveled to Tallahassee to face the Florida A&M Rattlers (FAMU) in a makeup game that was delayed from the original date of Sept. 28 because of category 4 hurricane Helene that hit just east of Tallahassee, FL on Sept. 26. Heavy on the hearts of the players, coaches, and fans was the recent passing of HBCU football player Medrick Burnett, Jr.

Burnett passed on Wednesday from injuries sustained in the Magic City Classic on Oct. 26 in Birmingham. He was pronounced dead by the Jefferson County Deputy Coroner on Wednesday evening at UAB Hospital.

At just 20 years old, it was an even tougher loss for such a young and talented student-athlete.

The Bulldogs rolled into Tallahassee, obviously distracted from the events of the two days leading up to Friday’s game. Nowhere was it more evident than head coach Connell Maynor.

“I am just glad these young men were able to play today. The last 48 hours have been extremely difficult. Hearing the news that Medrick had passed, then hearing that he hadn’t and then finally getting the final news that he had passed was really tough. I applaud our team for even wanting to play this game at this time,” Maynor said.

HBCU Medrick Burnett FAMU Alabama A&M

The HBCU community showered an outpouring of love on Alabama A&M. During the fourth quarter, the FAMU announcer called for a moment of silence to salute Medrick Burnett, Jr. You could hear a pin drop at Bragg Stadium as the fans paid homage.

The game drew over 10,000 fans for an after-Thanksgiving game that could have been even more sparse. With temperatures in the low 50s, drizzles of rain throughout the game, and the biggest shopping day of the year, it was an impressive crowd under the circumstance that most students had returned to their homes to celebrate the holidays with their families.

FAMU would pull off a 28-20 victory in the final game of the season, ending with a 7-6 (5-3 SWAC) record. AAMU would finish the season at 6-6 (4-4 SWAC).
