TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida A&M University (FAMU) has named John F. Davis, a veteran business and government leader, as its next vice president and director of athletics, signaling what President Marva Johnson calls “a new era of innovation, fiscal discipline, and transformational leadership” for Rattler Athletics. Davis will officially begin his role on January 5, 2026.

In a dual announcement, Angela Suggs, a respected FAMU alumna and former athletic administrator, will return to campus as special assistant to the president and advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics. She began her new role on November 10. Interim AD Michael Smith will continue to guide the department through the transition.

Business Leadership Meets HBCU Athletics

President Johnson said Davis’ record of managing complex organizations and driving measurable growth made him an ideal fit to lead FAMU Athletics in an evolving collegiate landscape shaped by NIL, realignment, and rising financial pressures.

“John Davis is a dynamic and results-oriented leader who brings more than three decades of executive experience in leading large-scale organizations, building high-performing teams, and driving strategic growth across Florida,” Johnson said. “His broad leadership experience and business acumen will ensure that FAMU remains a model of integrity, innovation, and opportunity.”

Davis currently serves as secretary of the Florida Lottery, where he’s led the agency through unprecedented growth, turning it into a $9 billion enterprise that supports public education across the state. Under his direction, the Lottery achieved record-breaking revenue and retained its position as the No. 1 lottery in the nation for total sales.

Before joining state government, Davis led the Orlando Regional Chamber and the African American Chamber of Commerce of Central Florida, overseeing major increases in membership, revenue, and partnerships.

“A Business Approach to College Athletics”

A former Florida State football player under Coach Bobby Bowden, Davis brings both business acumen and a firsthand understanding of student-athlete life.

“It is an honor to take on the role of Vice President and Director of Athletics at FAMU,” Davis said. “Collegiate athletics is a business enterprise evolving alongside professional sports. To advance a new trajectory for FAMU Athletics, I plan to leverage my experience across public and private sectors — and my roots as a student-athlete — to elevate the Rattler brand.”

He added that his statewide network of partnerships will help FAMU expand its resources and visibility.

“Working with our student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and supporters, we will build on FAMU’s proud legacy of excellence and take Rattler Athletics to even greater heights.”

Suggs Returns to Guide Strategy and Alignment

Suggs’ new role places her at the intersection of university leadership and athletics. As advisor for Intercollegiate Athletics, she will serve as a senior strategist to President Johnson, ensuring FAMU’s athletics program remains aligned with the university’s mission, academic goals, and branding.

“Angela Suggs possesses a wealth of experience in intercollegiate athletics administration and a comprehensive understanding of NCAA and SWAC regulations,” Johnson said. “Her expertise will help us strengthen operations and position FAMU for long-term success.”

Suggs, who previously served as the university’s athletic director, expressed excitement to rejoin her alma mater.

“I’m excited to see John Davis lead Florida A&M University Athletics, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the continued success of my alma mater,” she said. “President Johnson’s visionary leadership will position this institution for transformative growth.”

A Rattler With a Record of Results

Beyond his professional achievements, Davis has been honored statewide for his leadership and community impact. His accolades include recognition from Florida Trend Magazine, Orlando Business Journal, and ONYX Magazine, along with awards from Florida State University, 5000 Role Models of Excellence, and MAN UP Mentoring.

A native of Pahokee, Florida, Davis currently serves as vice chair of the Valencia College Board of Trustees and previously chaired Volunteer Florida’s Board of Commissioners.

What’s Next for FAMU Athletics

Davis’ appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Florida A&M, who continues to elevate its national profile within the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). His experience in organizational growth, financial strategy, and partnership development could help FAMU strengthen its athletic infrastructure and position the program for sustained excellence.

With Suggs’ return to the executive team, President Johnson’s administration is doubling down on integrating athletics with the broader mission of academic and institutional advancement — a move many see as a model for modern HBCU governance.

For HBCU fans, the name Shedeur Sanders carries weight. He made his mark lighting up defenses at Jackson State and later followed his father, Deion Sanders, to Colorado. Now, as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, Sanders is winning hearts in a new way — through generosity off the field.

Shedeur Sanders Partners With Drive Point Auto Group

In Northeast Ohio, Shedeur Sanders joined forces with Drive Point Auto Group, an Ohio-based family of dealerships. Together they launched the “Driven to Give Back” Car Giveaway to honor everyday heroes.

Their goal was simple: find one person whose life could change with a dependable car. That person was Torri Wright, a dedicated mother from Avon, Ohio.

A Daughter’s Nomination Changes Everything

Torri didn’t enter the contest herself. Her daughter, Justice, wrote a heartfelt nomination explaining how hard her mom works to support their family. Her story moved the judges, a panel made up of Drive Point representatives and Shedeur Sanders himself.

Shedeur Sanders Makes the Call

After the judges made their choice, Sanders picked up the phone. He called Torri personally to tell her she had won. In the now-viral clip, you can see the surprise on her face as she realizes the Browns quarterback is on the line.

The Prize: A Brand-New Hyundai Elantra

Torri had a choice between a 2025 Kia K4 LXS and a 2025 Hyundai Elantra SE. She chose the black Elantra — a practical, family-ready ride that will make her daily life easier and safer.

Still Driven to Give Back

From Jackson State to Cleveland, Shedeur Sanders keeps proving that leadership isn’t only about football. He uses his platform to celebrate hard-working people who often go unnoticed. His message stays clear — give back, lift others, and hand over the keys to a better day.

]]>
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Whenever the SWAC and MEAC get together, there’s always a little extra spark in the room. Sunday in D.C. didn’t disappoint with the Grambling vs Howard basketball showdown living up to the hype. Grambling held off Howard 73-70 in a tight, back-and-forth battle at Burr Gymnasium.

Behind a huge night from Jamil Muttilib, the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bison dropped to 1-2 despite a do-it-all performance from Bryce Harris.

Jamil Muttilib leads the way off the Grambling bench

Muttilib was the difference-maker for Grambling. Coming off the bench, he poured in 21 points on an ultra-efficient 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range. Every time Grambling needed a bucket in a one-possession game, Muttilib was there to knock down another jumper.

He wasn’t alone.

 • Jimel Lane: 18 points, 7-of-14 FG, 2-of-4 from three
 • Derrius Ward: 12 points, 4-of-9 FG, 3-of-4 at the line
 • Antonio Munoz: 11 points, 4-of-8 FG

Grambling’s bench outscored Howard’s reserves 25-16, with Muttilib accounting for the bulk of that production.

Second-half surge powers Grambling past Howard

Howard took a 33-32 lead into halftime, but the Tigers flipped the script after the break with one of the most efficient halves you’ll see this early in the season.

Grambling by half:

 • First half: 10-of-30 FG (33.3%), 4-of-12 from three
 • Second half: 15-of-19 FG (78.9%), 6-of-8 from three

For the game, Grambling finished at 51.0% from the field and 50.0% from deep. That scorching second half helped the Tigers overcome the narrow deficit and survive a game that featured:

 • 12 ties
 • 7 lead changes

Every trip down the floor mattered, and Grambling’s shot-making down the stretch was just enough to close it out.

Howard’s Bryce Harris nearly fills up every column

Howard’s Bryce Harris did everything he could to keep the Bison in front of the home crowd. The versatile forward stuffed the stat sheet with:

 • 15 points
 • 6 rebounds
 • 5 assists
 • 5 steals

Harris got plenty of help, too:

 • Alex Cotton: 13 points, 3-of-5 from three, 2 steals
 • Cam Gillus: 12 points, 5 assists, 2 steals
 • Travelle Bryson: 10 points, 4-of-4 at the line

As a team, Howard actually shot it slightly better overall than Grambling, going 25-of-48 from the floor (52.1%), 7-of-15 from three (46.7%) and 13-of-16 at the line (81.3%).

The Bison also owned a 27-23 edge on the glass, including 10 offensive boards. But in a game decided by three points, the miscues added up. Howard committed 19 turnovers, which Grambling turned into timely offense.

Turnovers, pace and hustle stats tell the story

The box score shows just how thin the margin was between victory and defeat in this Grambling vs Howard basketball matchup.

Grambling key team stats:

 • Points in the paint: 30
 • Fast-break points: 20
 • Second-chance points: 14
 • Points off turnovers: 19
 • Bench points: 25

Howard key team stats:

 • Points in the paint: 30
 • Fast-break points: 6
 • Second-chance points: 12
 • Points off turnovers: 21
 • Bench points: 16

Both teams finished with 30 points in the paint, and both capitalized on turnovers, but Grambling’s ability to get out in transition — 20 fast-break points to Howard’s 6 — gave the Tigers a crucial edge.

Coffee sets the table as Grambling’s floor general

While the scoring popped off the page, Grambling also got a strong all-around effort from its point guard.

Roderick Coffee III played 39 minutes, running the show with:

 • 8 assists
 • 7 rebounds
 • 7 points on 2-of-5 shooting and 2-of-3 from three

His decision-making and poise helped Grambling stay organized in a hostile road environment and navigate all the late-game ties and lead changes.

Atmosphere at Burr Gymnasium

A crowd of 1,653 packed into Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C., to watch two proud HBCU programs in a nonconference early-season test. The energy matched the box score: physical, intense and tight from start to finish.

With no technical fouls and a combined 29 assists between the two teams, it was a well-played, high-level game that showcased what SWAC and MEAC basketball can offer even before conference play starts.

What was supposed to be a hard-fought SWAC showdown turned chaotic at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium, as a brawl erupted during halftime of the HBCU contest between Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. The melee led to nine total ejections — five from Grambling State and four from Bethune-Cookman — after tempers flared when both teams came out of the locker room. GSU won the game 31-24.

Chaos at Halftime

The game was already physical before the incident, but the tension boiled over as players jawed near midfield heading into the third quarter. The confrontation quickly escalated into a full-on HBCU brawl, with players from both sidelines charging and several being thrown into team benches. Officials and coaches worked to restore order, but not before multiple ejections and a lengthy delay.

Conference and school officials are expected to review footage and impose further disciplinary actions. The brawl overshadowed what had been one of the more competitive HBCU matchups of the weekend.

Grambling State’s Big Plays Make the Difference

Despite the distractions, Grambling State quarterback Hayden Benoit delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 12-of-20 passing..His connection with wide receiver Nae’Saan Dickerson produced a 59-yard strike late in the second quarter that helped the Tigers take a 24-20 halftime lead.

Running back Andre Crews was the engine of Grambling’s offense, rushing for 130 yards on 14 carries, including multiple chunk plays that kept the Bethune-Cookman defense on its heels. Grambling’s balanced attack totaled nearly 200 rushing yards and controlled the ball for over 32 minutes.

Bethune-Cookman’s Passing Attack Shines

For Bethune-Cookman, quarterback Timmy McClain was nearly flawless through the air, completing 15 of 18 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. His top target, Maleek Huggins, torched Grambling’s secondary with six receptions for 122 yards and a 61-yard touchdown that tied the game 17-17 just before halftime.

Kicker Juan Dominguez also played a key role, hitting all three of his field goal attempts, including a 42-yarder late in the fourth quarter to cut Grambling’s lead to eight.

The latest HBCU brawl

While the on-field play was strong on both sides, the brawl will dominate headlines and social media discussions in the coming days. What began as a thrilling matchup between two programs fighting for position in the SWAC standings turned into a cautionary tale about composure and sportsmanship.

Grambling State improved to 6-3 on the season, while Bethune-Cookman fell to 5-4. Both teams are expected to face scrutiny — and possibly suspensions — heading into next week’s games.

For a program steeped in tradition like Grambling State, the victory will be tempered by the controversy, while Bethune-Cookman leaves Ruston wondering what might have been had the focus remained between the lines.

Saturday’s clash was more than just a football game — it was a reminder of how quickly emotions can spill over in rivalry atmospheres across HBCU football in particular and college football in general.

]]>
Two former Mississippi Valley State men’s basketball starters are at the center of an NCAA sports-betting investigation that now permanently bars them from college competition.

The NCAA says former Delta Devils guards Donovan Sanders and Alvin Stredic provided inside information to bettors and were offered money to help influence games during the 2024–25 season — a year in which Mississippi Valley finished 3–28 overall and 1–17 in SWAC play.

Both players were major pieces of that roster:

 • Stredic started 27 of 28 games, averaging 30.9 minutes, 9.4 points and 5.2 rebounds, while shooting 41.0% from the field (93-of-227) and going 77-of-124 at the line.
 • Sanders started 27 of 29 games, logging a team-high 32.7 minutes per game with 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and team-leading totals in both assists (79) and steals (42).

Their involvement means the NCAA’s findings aren’t about fringe players — they’re about two of Valley’s most trusted contributors.

NCAA: Phone call and flagged line before 45-point loss at Tulsa

The report details an incident before Valley’s Dec. 21, 2024 road game at Tulsa, a matchup the Delta Devils lost 93–48.

An unidentified Mississippi Valley player told investigators he overheard Sanders on the phone talking about “throwing the game.” Sanders then allegedly asked that teammate to join the call so a bettor could ask whether other players might be willing to participate. Sanders later instructed the player to delete their text messages, according to the NCAA.

Sportsbooks flagged the contest after a surge of large bets came in on Tulsa to cover the 26-point spread. Tulsa ended up winning by 45, and the unusual action was later turned over to investigators through an open-records request.

Offer to “play poorly” vs. Alabama A&M

The NCAA says Sanders later provided information to bettors ahead of Valley’s Jan. 6, 2025 trip to Alabama A&M, a game the Delta Devils lost 79–67.

In interviews with investigators, Sanders said he and Stredic were offered money to play poorly in the first half by another bettor. The same report noted that the betting handle on Mississippi Valley State–Alabama A&M was 3.6 times higher than a typical SWAC game.

Across the season, Mississippi Valley ran through a brutal schedule: road games at Iowa State, Missouri, Texas, BYU, Utah, Liberty, North Texas, LSU and more. The Delta Devils took heavy losses in most of those games and closed the year on a nine-game losing streak.

Those lopsided scores made the on-court product look like a typical rebuilding season. The betting patterns around Tulsa and Alabama A&M are what brought in regulators and eventually the NCAA.

Attempts to reach Sanders and Stredic were unsuccessful.

Mississippi Valley State issues statement

The University released a public statement after the NCAA decision, noting that the two players involved are no longer enrolled and stressing the school’s cooperation throughout the investigation.

“Mississippi Valley State University acknowledges the recent NCAA Committee on Infractions report, which concluded an enforcement investigation into sports betting violations involving two former men’s basketball student-athletes who are no longer enrolled at the university,” the statement read.

The university said it “fully cooperated with the NCAA’s investigation” and remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity in its athletic programs. MVSU added that it will work with the NCAA to implement education and preventative measures so all current student-athletes understand and follow sports-wagering rules.

Wider case spans multiple schools

Sanders and Stredic are among six former Division I players the NCAA permanently deemed ineligible in this case.

The investigation also involved three former players at New OrleansHunter, Short and Vincent — whom the NCAA says were linked to a betting scheme targeting multiple Privateers games, including a Dec. 28, 2024 matchup with McNeese State. Investigators cited text messages and witness accounts describing cash payments and communication with a known bettor around several Southland Conference contests.

In another branch of the case, former Arizona State guard B.J. Freeman was found to have given a former teammate and his then-girlfriend information so they could place daily-fantasy bets on his individual statistics.

All six players named in the report have had their eligibility permanently revoked, and none is currently enrolled at his former school, according to the NCAA.

The matchup connects two coaches with UAPB roots as the Bulldogs, ranked second in the SWAC preseason poll, face an early national test.

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs couldn’t have scripted a stronger start to their 2025-26 season. Coming off a 103-32 rout of Talladega College, the Bulldogs now turn their attention to hosting No. 12 Ole Miss — a nationally ranked SEC program led by a coach who knows HBCU basketball firsthand.

Two Coaches with Familiar Roots

Yolett McPhee-McCuin, better known around the SEC as Coach Yo, started her Division I coaching career at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) from 2005-2007. She earned her master’s degree there while learning the grind of HBCU basketball.

Across the sideline, Dawn Thornton also spent time at UAPB, serving later as head coach before taking over at Alabama A&M. Their paths never crossed, but both know what it means to build with limited resources and maximum drive.

That shared background brings a layer of respect to tonight’s meeting. It’s competition, not ceremony — two women who know the same climb now matching up with their own programs.

SWAC Preseason Buzz

The Bulldogs were picked second in the 2025-26 SWAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, earning five first-place votes behind only Southern.

Preseason Honors

 • Kalia WalkerSWAC Preseason Player of the Year and All-SWAC First Team
 • Jaida BeltonAll-SWAC Second Team

Walker gives Alabama A&M a proven scorer and emotional leader. Belton anchors the frontcourt with rebounding and rim protection. Together they headline a roster built to challenge anyone in the league.

Early Statement vs. Talladega

Alabama A&M wasted no time in its opener, leading 31-4 after the first quarter and forcing 27 turnovers. Six players reached double figures while the defense held Talladega to 13 percent shooting.

It was the kind of complete performance that shows what Thornton’s system looks like when it’s humming — fast, connected, and confident.

Ole Miss Brings SEC Power

Ole Miss (1-0) arrives from a convincing win over Norfolk State, another HBCU program. Coach Yo’s team plays hard, defends even harder, and carries depth at every position.

Her willingness to open the season with back-to-back HBCU opponents — Norfolk State and now Alabama A&M — says plenty about her appreciation for where she started. It’s also a reminder that respect travels both ways.

Matchups to Watch

 • Walker vs. Rebel Guards: Walker’s mid-range scoring against SEC-level length will be telling early.
 • Belton in the Paint: She’ll be key on the boards against Ole Miss’s physical front line.
 • Sideline Chess: Thornton and McPhee-McCuin both emphasize pressure defense — whichever team handles it better sets the tone.

What’s on the Line

For Alabama A&M, it’s a measuring stick game against a nationally ranked opponent. For Ole Miss, it’s another chance to tighten rotations before SEC play. For both, it’s a competitive night between programs led by women who’ve carried HBCU lessons into every phase of their careers.

On Monday night, Mo Williams, the former NBA guard turned Jackson State head coach, made waves on social media for his sideline fashion as the Tigers tipped off against No. 17 Illinois. While the game itself was rough—Jackson State fell 113-55 on the road—the buzz centered on Williams’ cool, casual style rather than the box score.

Rocking a denim jacket layered over a black hoodie, accented with a white designer watch, the former All-Star guard’s outfit immediately drew attention across basketball Twitter and sports broadcasts alike.

Williams, now in his fourth season leading Jackson State, is no stranger to the spotlight. As a player, he carved out a long NBA career highlighted by an All-Star appearance with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a stint as a teammate of LeBron James. His sideline demeanor and fashion flair have now become part of his coaching identity, blending the confidence of a former pro with the energy of an HBCU head coach guiding a proud program.

Though Jackson State struggled against a nationally ranked Illinois squad, there were still positives—Devin Ree’s 19 points and Daeshun Ruffin’s 12 kept the Tigers competing through stretches of the game. But as cameras panned to Williams, the conversation shifted. Viewers and analysts alike had their opinions about whether or not he should be wearing a suit — or at least something different.

Next up, Jackson State travels to face No. 11 Louisville on Thursday, Nov. 6—another major stage for both the team and its fashion-forward coach. Win or lose, expect Mo Williams and his NBA-caliber style to keep turning heads as the Tigers continue their early-season road stretch.

Dawn Thornton — HBCU basketball’s most stylish coach — is staying put. Alabama A&M head women’s basketball coach Dawn Thornton has agreed to a three-year contract extension after delivering the most successful season in program history at the NCAA Division I level. The move solidifies Thornton’s place as one of the brightest coaching minds and boldest personalities in all of HBCU sports.

Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Paul A. Bryant praised Thornton’s transformative impact on The Hill. “Coach Dawn Thornton has brought a new era of excellence to Alabama A&M women’s basketball,” Bryant said. “Her commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court, her strategic acumen, and her passion for HBCU athletics have made an immediate impact.”

In just one season, Thornton guided the Bulldogs to a 21-11 overall record and a 14-4 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), earning a berth in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The 21 victories marked Alabama A&M’s first 20-win campaign since joining NCAA Division I in 1999 — and only the fifth in the history of the program. It also represented Thornton’s first 20-win season as a head coach, cementing her reputation as both a program builder and culture shifter in HBCU basketball.

Dawn Thornton at Alabama A&M, switching jobs in the SWAC.

For Thornton, who has quickly earned a reputation as one of the most fashionable figures in college hoops, the extension is about more than appearances or wins. “This extension is bigger than basketball,” she said. “It’s about impact, legacy, and purpose. Every day I’m reminded that coaching is about more than winning games. It’s about shaping women into leaders, dreamers, and world changers.”

That mindset has resonated deeply within the HBCU community, where Thornton’s blend of style and substance has made her a rising icon. Her “BIG ENERGY” mantra — as she calls it — reflects a fearless confidence that’s redefining what leadership looks like on the sidelines.

With her new deal in place, Dawn Thornton will lead Alabama A&M into the 2025-26 campaign with even greater expectations. The Bulldogs open the season against Talladega before hosting Ole Miss inside the AAMU Event Center, both streamed live on SWAC TV. If her first year was any indication, Thornton’s tenure promises to be a powerful era — one that continues to elevate HBCU basketball on and off the court.

AUBURN, Ala. — The No. 20 Auburn Tigers opened the 2025–26 college basketball season with a narrow 95–90 overtime victory over a resilient HBCU program in Bethune-Cookman on Monday night. The Tigers were pushed to the limit before escaping behind a decisive advantage at the free-throw line.

Free Throws Make the Difference

Auburn’s margin came largely from the stripe, where it outscored the Wildcats 27–8. Keyshawn Hall was nearly automatic, going 16-for-18 from the line en route to a game-high 28 points. Tahaad Pettiford and Kevin Overton combined for 24 more, and both were steady late as Auburn survived a furious Bethune-Cookman rally that forced overtime.

The HBCU squad from Daytona Beach shot nearly 51 percent from the field and an impressive 54.5 percent from beyond the arc, but the foul disparity proved too much to overcome. Auburn attempted 38 free throws to Bethune-Cookman’s nine, a gap that loomed large as the game wore on.

Auburn

HBCU squad came to play

Bethune-Cookman, representing the SWAC, refused to be intimidated by the nationally ranked Tigers. Guard Arterio Morris led the HBCU effort with 20 points and five three-pointers, while forward Daniel Rouzan added 16 points and six rebounds inside. Quentin Heady was the heart of the Wildcats’ attack, scoring 21 points with several key plays down the stretch, including the free throws that tied the game at 81–81 and forced overtime.

The Wildcats actually led 83–81 early in the extra period after an Ariel Bland put-back, but Auburn responded with an 11–5 run sparked by Hall and Overton. The Tigers’ depth and ability to draw contact ultimately decided it.

Auburn’s Frontcourt Answers the Call

While Hall and Pettiford carried the scoring load, Auburn’s frontcourt was crucial in the second half. Freshman forward KeShawn Murphy delivered 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Elyjah Freeman added eight points and two key dunks to shift momentum late.

A Wake-Up Call for Auburn

For Auburn, this season opener was far from routine. The Tigers entered the night as heavy favorites against the HBCU visitors but needed all 45 minutes to prevail. The close call served as both a warning and a reminder that early-season chemistry can be fragile.

Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman walked away with national respect — an HBCU program that outshot and outplayed a Top 25 SEC team for long stretches, proving it can compete on college basketball’s biggest stage.

The University of Arkansas–Pine Bluff (UAPB) women’s basketball team opened its 2025–26 HBCU basketball campaign with a statement victory, rallying late to defeat Memphis 69–64 on the road in front of a packed Education Day crowd of more than 1,000 students.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Golden Lions Rally Past Tigers

Down nine entering the fourth quarter, the Golden Lions erupted for 25 points in the final frame while holding Memphis to just 10. Guard Indiya Bowen led the charge with 29 points, nine rebounds, and three triples, while fellow guard Jailah Pelly added 23 points and a team-high 10 rebounds — giving UAPB a pair of double-doubles in the backcourt.

It was the first time Pine Bluff topped Memphis since 2007, when the Golden Lions pulled out a 99–97 overtime thriller. In their last meeting back in 2013, Memphis dominated 91–45 — a gap that underscores how big Monday’s result truly was for UAPB.

Historic Context

The win was more than just an upset — it was a program-defining moment for a young head coach looking to build a winner. Memphis entered after a 7–23 season in 2024–25 and was aiming to reclaim its footing in the American Athletic Conference. UAPB, meanwhile, was coming off a 3–25 campaign that included just one conference win in the SWAC.

For second-year head coach Erika Leak, named Arkansas Coach of the Year after taking West Memphis High to the state finals in 2023, an opening-season win like this could spark the turnaround that the UAPB faithful are hoping for. A year into the rebuild, her Golden Lions showed the poise and fight of a team ready to rewrite its story.

Defense and Poise Down the Stretch

The Golden Lions outscored Memphis 25–10 in the fourth, turning a deficit into a defining road win. UAPB’s defense forced eight lead changes and five ties, while limiting Memphis to just 20% shooting in the final quarter.

Despite Memphis holding a 45–30 edge in points in the paint, UAPB’s backcourt speed flipped the script, generating 20 points off turnovers and 15 fast-break points. Forward Tyra Taylor and center Briontanay Marshall combined for 13 points and 15 rebounds inside, providing the interior balance needed to close it out.

Setting the Tone for HBCU Hoops

The win not only gives UAPB women’s basketball a 1–0 start, but the HBCU program puts the region on notice with the big win. Against a Memphis team that had won 11 of its last 14 season openers, the Golden Lions’ upset serves as both validation and motivation for a group looking to climb the SWAC ladder this winter.

With three Memphis-area natives — Briah Hampton, Kristyna Boyd, and Tyra Taylor — on the roster, the victory carried extra weight for the Golden Lions, who now return home with both bragging rights and early-season momentum.

Next Up: Razorbacks Await

Next up for UAPB is a marquee in-state matchup against SEC powerhouse Arkansas, which suddenly carries even greater intrigue. The Golden Lions enter with momentum, confidence, and the chance to make an even bigger statement that could echo far beyond the SWAC if they can challenge their Power Five neighbors from Fayetteville.

Top Performers:

 • Indiya Bowen (UAPB): 29 pts, nine reb, three ast, 3-5 3PT
 • Jailah Pelly (UAPB): 23 pts, 10 reb, three ast
 • Emani Jefferson (Memphis): 17 pts, six reb

You wouldn’t expect a man in a walking boot and on crutches to change the course of an HBCU football game. But Jackson State’s JaCobian Morgan did exactly that in the Tigers’ commanding 42–16 victory over the Florida A&M Rattlers. All without taking a single snap.

Morgan, a native of Canton, Mississippi, suffered a lower leg injury during Jackson State’s loss to Grambling. The setback sidelined him for the FAMU matchup, but head coach T.C. Taylor made it clear that Morgan’s presence was still essential.

The Heart and Soul

“He’s the heart and soul of our football team,” Taylor said. “He’s a winner, a national championship winner, he’s done it at a high level for a long time around here. I told him after the injury, we’re not gonna leave you home. I need you on that sideline.”

Throughout the HBCU rivalry matchup, as freshman quarterback Jared Lockhart navigated early struggles, Morgan became his on-field mentor. Between series, he offered encouragement and advice — not as a coach, but as a big brother. In the second half, Morgan’s leadership deepened as he grabbed an iPad to break down plays and help Lockhart adjust in real time.

Morgan’s leadership isn’t new. In 2024, he led the Tigers to a 10–1 record as the starting quarterback. His season culminated in the program’s first-ever Celebration Bowl championship. The 28–7 win over Chennis Berry’s South Carolina State Bulldogs marked redemption for Jackson State, which had fallen to the same opponent in 2021 under legendary coach Buddy Pough.

Before transferring to play HBCU football at Jackson State, JaCobian Morgan began his career at Syracuse University, where he became one of the few true freshmen to start at quarterback. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 228 pounds, he combined athleticism with academic excellence, earning a spot on the Syracuse Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Commitment to Thee Team

His commitment to team success has never been in question — even when injured. “He’s the morale of our football team,” Taylor added. “We’re built around him, and that’s what you see. He even roomed with Jared at the hotel this weekend to keep him comfortable. I didn’t have to go over there during the game much because I saw him coaching him up. He’s a great student of the game, and even though we miss him on the field, he’s doing exactly what we need — leading.”

In a game that showcased Jackson State’s dominance, it was the quiet leadership of an injured quarterback — boot, crutches, and all — that may have made the biggest difference.

The SWAC West is back in flux, I mean it is November after all. Prairie View A&M entered the weekend unbeaten in conference play, but after falling to Alabama State, the division picture is serving up a little hope heading into the holiday season.

Now, with just three weeks left in the regular season, Prairie View, Texas Southern, and Grambling State are all in the mix — and the November schedule sets up a finish that could come down to the final weekend, as usual.

Alabama State spoils Prairie View’s momentum

Final: Alabama State 31, Prairie View A&M 28
Location: Panther Stadium — Prairie View, TX

It was a chance for a signature win for Prairie View A&M, but Alabama State, out of the East Division, had other plans.

The Hornets erased a 14-point deficit and leaned on quarterback Andrew Body and running back Marcus Harris II, who combined for four rushing touchdowns. Body scored twice before leaving the game for good with an injury just before halftime, but ASU’s defense handled the rest — intercepting Cameron Peters four times and sealing the win after a missed 53-yard field goal in the final seconds.

Prairie View fell to 6-3 overall, 4-1 SWAC, but still sits atop the West thanks to clean head-to-head wins over both Texas Southern (21-14) and Grambling State (28-13).

Alcorn State stings Texas Southern

Final: Alcorn State 33, Texas Southern 14
Location: Shell Energy Stadium — Houston, TX

Down in Houston, Alcorn State played spoiler. The Braves dominated on the ground, rushing for 224 yards, led by Reggie Davis’s 87 yards and three touchdowns. Texas Southern struggled to sustain drives and fell behind early, dropping to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the SWAC.

The loss dents TSU’s momentum, but they’re still in the thick of it, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Grambling after a 21–20 win earlier this year.

Grambling stays hot at home

Final: Grambling State 13, Alabama A&M 10
Location: Eddie G. Robinson Stadium — Grambling, LA

Grambling State is quietly becoming the biggest storyline in the West. The G-Men notched their third straight win, improving to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Behind a stingy defense and solid special teams, Grambling held off Alabama A&M and kept its postseason hopes alive. GSU didn’t score an offensive touchdown on Saturday but still managed to win. Grambling returned a punt 64 yards for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter and Grambling defeated Alabama A&M 13-10 on Saturday. They’ll need help to catch Prairie View — but if the Prairie View and Texas Southern slip again, the Tigers will be waiting.

What’s left: the road to SWAC Championship

Here’s what’s still on deck for the West contenders as the regular season winds down:

November 8 (Week 11)

 • Prairie View A&M at Alabama A&M (2 PM) — Prairie View can tighten its grip on the West with a bounce-back win. A loss opens the door for TSU or Grambling.
 • Texas Southern at Alabama State (2 PM) — Massive crossover game. TSU must win to stay alive; ASU is chasing the East crown.
 • Bethune-Cookman at Grambling State (2 PM) — Grambling goes for its fourth straight. A win keeps pressure on PVAMU, but Bethune-Cookman is a contender in the East.

November 15 (Week 12)

 • Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Senior Day in Prairie View; a chance to clinch if the Panthers handle business.
 • Texas Southern at Southern (2 PM) — TSU can’t afford an upset loss here.
 • Grambling State at Alcorn State (2 PM) — Classic trap game — G-Men can’t slip if they want to keep hopes alive.

November 22 (Week 13)

 • Mississippi Valley State at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Potential clincher for Prairie View.
 • Alabama A&M at Texas Southern (2 PM) — TSU’s final push.
 • Grambling idle until Bayou Classic — The G-Men will be scoreboard watching.

November 29 — Bayou Classic (Grambling vs. Southern, 1 PM)

If Prairie View drops a game before this point, the Bayou Classic could carry major championship weight — the kind of scenario that makes SWAC football magic in late November.

Big picture: Prairie View still controls it all

 • Prairie View can clinch the West by winning out — any combination of three wins (vs Alabama A&M, UAPB, and MVSU) locks them into SWAC Championship.
 • Texas Southern must win out and hope Prairie View loses twice.
 • Grambling needs to win out and see Prairie View lose twice and Texas Southern once.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) enters a pivotal weekend that could reshape the championship race. With Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Jackson State, Alabama State, and Bethune-Cookman all battling for top-three spots, every game this Saturday carries weight.

All times listed are Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Mississippi Valley State at Bethune-Cookman – 3:00 PM EST | Daytona Beach, FL (SWAC TV)
Records: MVSU (1-6, 0-3) | B-CU (4-4, 3-1)
Kickoff High: 71 °F, mostly sunny

Bethune-Cookman enters on a two-game win streak and remains tied for first in the SWAC East.
Head Coach Raymond Woody praised his team’s growth:
“I’m proud of the guys for persevering and finishing on a good note… they expect to win.”
A win keeps the Wildcats in a three-way tie atop the East standings.

Grambling still has hope in West

Alabama A&M at Grambling State – 3:00 PM EST | Grambling, LA (SWAC TV)
Records: AAMU (4-4, 1-3) | GSU (5-3, 2-2)
Kickoff High: 80 °F, partly sunny

Grambling has won two straight and remains mathematically alive in the West race. Alabama A&M hopes to spoil Grambling’s momentum and snap a two-game conference skid.

SWAC Cross Divisional Showdown

Alabama State at Prairie View A&M – 3:00 PM EST | Prairie View, TX (SWAC TV)
Records: Alabama State (5-2, 3-1) | PVAMU (6-2, 4-0)
Kickoff High: 72 °F, partly cloudy

This cross-divisional showdown could shape both championship races. Prairie View leads the West, while Alabama State is tied atop the East.
Prairie View head coach Tremaine Jackson said,
“We’re teaching people what winning looks like… and we’re focused, laser-focused on this Alabama State team.”

A Prairie View win would nearly clinch the West crown.

Southern at Arkansas-Pine Bluff – 3:00 PM EST | Pine Bluff, AR (SWAC TV)
Records: Southern (1-7, 0-4) | UAPB (3-5, 1-3)
Kickoff High: 78 °F, clear skies

Southern continues searching for its first conference win under interim coach Fred McNair, while Pine Bluff looks to end a two-game slide. Both teams aim to finish strong in November.

Texas Southern a serious contender

Alcorn State at Texas Southern – 3:00 PM EST | Houston, TX (HBCU GO)
Records: Alcorn (2-6, 1-3) | Texas Southern (4-3, 3-1)
Kickoff High: 87 °F, partly cloudy

Texas Southern remains a serious contender for the SWAC West title.
Head Coach C.J. Dishman said,
“We’re expecting the same output — offense, defense, and special teams complementing each other.”
A win keeps the Tigers within one game of division-leading Prairie View A&M.

Jackson State at Florida A&M – 7:00 PM EST | Tallahassee, FL (ESPN+)
Records: JSU (5-2, 3-1) | FAMU (3-4, 2-1)
Kickoff High: 74 °F, humid, chance of showers

This primetime matchup has major implications in the SWAC East.
Jackson State’s T.C. Taylor said,
“We still control our own destiny… It’s all about going down to Tallahassee and executing at a high level.”
FAMU Coach James Kozy added,
“Normally the winner of this game represents the East in the SWAC Championship. It looks like it could be that way again this year.”

SWAC Standings Impact

East Division

 1. Jackson State (3-1)
 2. Alabama State (3-1)
 3. Bethune-Cookman (3-1)

The East race remains a three-way tie, and all eyes will be on Daytona Beach and Tallahassee to see who emerges on top.

West Division

 1. Prairie View A&M (4-0)
 2. Texas Southern (3-1)

Prairie View controls its destiny but faces its toughest test yet in Alabama State. A Texas Southern win over Alcorn would keep the division mathematically open.

The post SWAC Commissioner gets high level NCAA Appointment appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
The NCAA has appointed five new members to its Board of Governors Finance and Audit Committee, with Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland among those selected to serve.

The NCAA Board of Governors Finance and Audit Committee oversees the organization’s financial operations and auditing processes. Working under the broader NCAA Board of Governors, the committee ensures fiscal responsibility, reviews financial statements, and upholds financial integrity and transparency across the association.

McClelland’s Historic Appointment

Dr. McClelland expressed his excitement and gratitude following the announcement.

“I’m sincerely honored to be selected as a member of the NCAA Board of Governors Finance and Audit Committee,” McClelland said. “This committee plays a crucial role within the overall governance structure of the NCAA, and I couldn’t be more excited to begin serving the NCAA membership in this capacity.”

McClelland’s appointment adds to his growing list of national leadership roles within collegiate athletics — and further cements his impact as one of the most influential administrators in HBCU sports.

Transforming the SWAC Since 2018

Appointed as the sixth commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 2018, McClelland has overseen one of the most transformative eras in league history.

Under his leadership, the SWAC expanded in 2020 with the addition of Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman University, growing the conference to 12 member institutions across six states.

The current SWAC lineup includes:

 • Mississippi: Alcorn State, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State
 • Alabama: Alabama A&M, Alabama State
 • Louisiana: Grambling State, Southern University
 • Texas: Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern
 • Arkansas: Arkansas-Pine Bluff
 • Florida: Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman

Building a Modern SWAC Headquarters

Among the notable accomplishments during McClelland’s tenure was the purchase of a new corporate headquarters — a three-story office building featuring over 40 individual offices, multiple conference rooms, and state-of-the-art multimedia spaces.

The new facility now serves as the central hub for the league’s business operations, meetings, and digital media production through the SWAC Digital Network.

Expanding Access Through SWAC TV

In 2025, the conference introduced SWAC TV, a digital streaming platform designed to provide fans with broader access to live events and original content from across its 18 sponsored sports.

Available on multiple streaming devices, SWAC TV serves as a modern extension of the league’s growing media presence — part of McClelland’s continued effort to expand visibility and engagement for HBCU athletics on national platforms.

NCAA Leadership Beyond the SWAC

Beyond his SWAC duties, McClelland continues to break barriers nationally. In 2019, he joined the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, which is responsible for selecting, seeding, and bracketing the field for the NCAA Tournament.

In 2022, McClelland made history once again when he was named chair of the committee for the 2023–24 season — becoming the first person representing an HBCU league or institution to ever lead the committee.

He is also a former member of the NCAA Leadership/Management Council, one of the NCAA’s highest-ranking policymaking bodies during his tenure. That council helped shape NCAA strategic direction, advised the Board of Directors, and established general policies and administrative bylaws.

The HBCU football spotlight is back on the SWAC East, where Jackson State’s loss to Grambling in the Las Vegas HBCU Classic reopened the door for Alabama State, which could seize the division title if it keeps winning and JSU stumbles again.

Jackson State Falls in Vegas

JSU traveled to Las Vegas to face Grambling State in what was billed as a statement game. The storied rivals met under the bright lights of Allegiant Field in Las Vegas, NV. The defending SWAC champions entered the matchup with confidence, looking to stay on top of the conference in a nationally televised matchup. Still, in typical HBCU rivalry fashion, Grambling had other plans.

Jackson State was stunned in an instant classic. The Mississippi Tigers fell short in a dramatic upset that could shake up the entire HBCU football landscape. The loss now jeopardizes Jackson State’s championship hopes—and Alabama State is watching closely.

How It Impacts the Hornets

Alabama State and Jackson State compete in the SWAC East, meaning every win and loss matters when it comes to representing the division in the SWAC Championshp Game. Earlier this season, Jackson State topped Alabama State, giving them the upper hand in the head-to-head standings. But now, things have shifted.

With JSU’s recent stumble, Alabama State’s path to the SWAC Championship has been revived. The Hornets just need a little help—and a lot of focus.

If Jackson State drops another game, it could open the door for Alabama State to sneak into first place. For that to happen, the Hornets must take care of business down the stretch.

HBCU SWAC Jackson State Alabama State Grambling
The Road Ahead

JSU’s star quarterback, Jacobian Morgan, suffered a foot injury in the loss to Grambling State and is expected to miss several games and potentially the rest of the season. Without their leader under center, Jackson State could face uphill battles in its remaining schedule, including games against Florida A&M, Mississippi Valley State, Bethune-Cookman, and Alcorn State in the season’s stretch run.

Meanwhile, Alabama State’s remaining schedule includes Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Mississippi Valley State, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff—a manageable path if they can stay consistent.

Can the Hornets Take Advantage?

This scenario feels familiar. Jackson State went through a similar situation last year, bouncing back from a midseason loss to reclaim the SWAC crown. But this time, things feel different. The Tigers’ quarterback room is thin; every game will test their depth and resilience.

For Alabama State, this is the moment to strike. If they can run the table and Jackson State slips again, the Hornets could find themselves back in the championship mix. Something that seemed impossible just weeks ago.

With the SWAC East is officially wide open. The next few weeks will determine which teams are built to last in this HBCU football heavyweight race.

Jackson State students got an unexpected visit from a hip-hop legend this week. During a campus event focused on HIV awareness, none other than Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance as part of GLAAD’s “Generation Z and HIV: Human Issue. Southern Solution. HBCU Tour.”

The rapper, actor, and cultural icon sat down for a fireside chat with GLAAD’s Director of Local News: U.S. South, Darian Aaron, to talk about the intersection of hip-hop, HIV awareness, and LGBTQ representation in media.

The energy wasn’t just about Snoop pulling up — the conversation dug deep. Advocates and health leaders from across Mississippi took the mic to keep it real about what’s still happening with HIV, breaking down the facts on prevention, treatment, and how to protect yourself and your community.

“HIV in Black communities is far from over,” said Aaron. “Black people in the South — no matter who they are or who they love — remain at disproportionate risk. The tour helps students learn that HIV is preventable with an injection or daily pill, and it’s both survivable and untransmittable with proper treatment.”

Snoop Dogg has brought major attention to the cause, reinforcing the message that awareness and education still matter — especially on HBCU campuses leading the charge for change in the South.

The federal government shutdown has had a tremendous impact on thousands of people — but one HBCU coach is looking to provide some assistance. Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has agreed to pay for 100 tickets for furloughed government workers for his team’s next game.

Jackson made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

“What’s up Panther Nation. It’s your head coach Tremaine Jackson,” Jackson said standing on the football field. “Big game on “The Hill” this weekend. Your Panthers vs. the Alabama State Hornets. We need you there.”

He encouraged fans to buy their tickets to the game online — which had still not sold out.

“This week, we’re doing something special. If you’ve — in any way — been affected by the government shutdown, all you have to do is come to will-call with your federal ID. And I’m going to personally buy your ticket to the game,” Jackson said. “That way you guys can get out and have a good time, watch a great football game. Saturday at 2 PM, can’t wait to see you there. Go Panthers.”

Jackson making noise in the HBCU world and beyond

Jackson has been making noise since he arrived at the HBCU on the heels of a Division II national championship appearance at Valdosta State. Last week he made waves when he admonished his fans to sell out the team’s homecoming game. That effort fell short as the 11,427 fans that attended was well short of the 16,000 capacity for Blackshear Field.

But this effort is a way of outreach for those in the Houston area who have been impacted by the government shutdown, which started this month and threatens to move into November.

The game is a matchup of two of the top HBCU programs as Prairie View A&M is 6-2 and 4-0 in the SWAC while Alabama State is 5-2, 3-1 in SWAC play.

Alcorn State University, a Lorman, MS-based HBCU, has received a record-setting $42 million unrestricted donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, marking the largest single gift in the university’s 154-year history. The contribution reflects Scott’s second major investment in Alcorn, following a $25 million gift in 2020, bringing her total support for the institution to $67 million.

A Transformational Gift for a Historic HBCU

“This is a historic moment for Alcorn State University as we celebrate the largest single donation in our university’s history,” said Dr. Tracy M. Cook, president of Alcorn State University. “We are immensely grateful for Ms. MacKenzie Scott’s continued investment in Alcorn, our students, and our mission to create access.”

Founded in 1871 as the nation’s oldest public historically Black land-grant university, Alcorn State has long been a pillar of educational opportunity in Mississippi and beyond. The unrestricted nature of MacKenzie Scott’s latest $42 million gift gives the university flexibility to address its most pressing needs—ranging from scholarships and faculty development to capital improvements and student success initiatives.

Building on a Legacy of Impact

Scott’s 2020 donation of $25 million helped launch new scholarships, including the Rep. Alyce Clarke Mississippi First Scholarship program, supported faculty endowments, and advanced capital projects aligned with Alcorn’s strategic plan. Her continued generosity underscores the growing confidence in Alcorn’s leadership, vision, and impact as a leading HBCU.

“Receiving another record transformational gift within five years is both a powerful affirmation of Alcorn’s impact and a charge to all Alcornites to help accelerate our work for student success, campus sustainability, and enrollment growth,” said Dr. Marcus D. Ward, senior vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the ASU Foundation.

Investing in the Future of Alcorn State

University leaders will collaborate with the ASU Foundation to strategically allocate the $42 million across initiatives that strengthen the university’s infrastructure, enhance academic programs, and expand access for future generations.

“This gift opens a new chapter for Alcorn State,” President Cook said. “We will use every dollar to support students, strengthen the university, and serve Mississippi and the nation for generations to come.”

With MacKenzie Scott’s latest contribution, Alcorn State University joins a growing list of HBCUs benefiting from her historic philanthropy—one that continues to transform the landscape of higher education and expand opportunity for Black students nationwide.

LAS VEGAS — In a wild finish fitting for the city that never sleeps, HBCU football fans were treated to a game that was made for Vegas as Grambling State stunned Jackson State 26–24 in the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic at Allegiant Stadium. For the second straight year, Grambling State pulled off an improbable victory against the reigning SWAC and Celebration Bowl champions — this time overcoming the loss of its starting quarterback in the final minutes.

Jackson State (5–2, 3–1 SWAC) looked poised to control the game early. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan engineered a crisp opening drive capped by his own 7-yard touchdown run, and kicker Donovan Warren added a field goal to push the Tigers ahead 10–0 by the end of the first quarter. Grambling State (5–3, 2–2 SWAC) struggled to move the ball early, punting on its first two drives and losing a fumble near midfield.

But as has often been the case in this renewed HBCU rivalry, momentum shifted fast. Quarterback C’Zavian Teasett — steady all night — ignited the Tigers with a 59-yard strike to Covadis Knighten just before halftime to cut the deficit to 10–6. A last-second field goal from Theodore Caballero made it 10–9 at the break.

Teasett played his best football after halftime, finding tight end Alex Frazier for a 26-yard touchdown that extended Grambling State’s lead to 23–10 early in the fourth quarter. The junior finished 16-of-26 passing for 232 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions before disaster struck. While scrambling late in the fourth quarter, Teasett was hit hard and was carted off the field after being unable to move.

Backup A’Myne Darensbourg, a redshirt freshman, entered under immense pressure with the game on the line. Jackson State had stormed back behind quarterback Jared Lockhart, whose 62-yard bomb to Nate Rembert and a one-yard keeper put the reigning champions ahead 24–23 with just over two minutes to play.

The Vegas Miracle

From there, Grambling State delivered a drive worthy of the Las Vegas lights. Starting from its own 35, Darensbourg calmly completed a third-down pass to Barron Miles Jr. to move the chains. With time winding down, kicker Josh McCormick — who hadn’t attempted a field goal all night — nailed a 44-yard game-winner with 21 seconds left, sending the black-and-gold sideline into a frenzy.

Grambling finished with 365 total yards to Jackson State’s 448 but won the turnover battle and controlled critical moments. Tre Bradford led the ground game with 58 yards on 11 carries, while Knighten added 96 receiving yards and a touchdown.

HBCU football leaves its mark on Vegas

The inaugural Las Vegas Classic lived up to its billing as a showcase for HBCU excellence, pageantry, and pride. With over 29,000 fans in attendance and two iconic programs trading haymakers until the final seconds, it proved that Grambling State and Jackson State remain standard-bearers for the culture — and for thrilling football drama in any setting.

Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has been making headlines in HBCU football since he arrived in Texas. Now the coach of one of the hottest teams in SWAC football is making waves ahead of homecoming.

Jackson posted on social media earlier this week challenging Prairie View A&M fans to sell out the program’s homecoming game against Lincoln University.

“ I got an issue. My issue is I just talked to Josh, our ticket guy, and he told me that the game isn’t sold out,” Jackson tweeted. “And I just can’t understand why the football game for homecoming at Prairie View A&M is not sold out.”

Though he said he didn’t understand, he did offer up a few reasons as to why the tickets hadn’t been sold out.

“I understand that you might not be used to filling up Panther Stadium and all the alums coming back,” Jackson said. “You used to be in another deal and it just wasn’t that many people. Well, now we have Panther Stadium, now we have, different things going on in the football program. So we need the game to be sold out.”

State-of-the-art HBCU/FCS facility

The facility that PVAMU calls home is almost a decade old as it replaced the 6,000 seat stadium back in 2016. It is a state-of-the art facility — one of the best in HBCU and FCS football — that seats nearly 15,000.

And it isn’t that the program isn’t doing well. PVAMU is currently 5-2 and 4-0 in the SWAC in Tremaine Jackson’s debut, and likely headed for a SWAC championship game.

“If the game isn’t sold out, why would you even come back here? Homecoming is about having a good time — for the game.

It makes sense, given those facts, that the game would be a hot ticket. But that doesn’t always happen at HBCU homecomings.

PVAMU

Do opponents matter too much?

Responses to Jackson’s tweet online were pretty telling. Many people reference the fact that PVAMU’s opponent is less-than-desirable. It is scheduled to play Lincoln University — a small school out of California that isn’t Division I or even a part of the NCAA. It is a school that routinely plays HBCUs and other FCS football programs in money games, much like when HBCUs play Power Five programs.

“Look, I get wanting to pack the stadium for homecoming — that makes sense,” one follower responded. “What I don’t get is why you’d want fans to watch y’all drop 50+ on a team that already canceled two games this season. Not everyone wants to see a scrimmage, but I get it.”

Another fan speculated that the perception of the opponent is also impacting enthusiasm for the game.

“To be honest, I’m hearing that a lot of the older alumni are turned off by our opponent this year,” she wrote. “I mean, with all due respect to Lincoln, they’ve been outscored 215-8 this season.”

Jackson responded to this line of thinking directly.

“Can’t do anything about that this year,” he said in response. “It’ll change when it changes. Right now be at the game.”

Prairie View isn’t alone

No two HBCU homecomings are alike, but many of them face a struggle to sell out the actual game. Meanwhile outside events — including tailgating — seem to grow in stature each year.

Tremaine Jackson isn’t the first HBCU coach to question this phenomenon, but he did spark a conversation that is worth having moving forward. Is the football game still the centerpiece for HBCU homecomings or has it taken a permanent backseat?

Let us know in the comments below.

Alcorn State University has announced new security protocols at Jack Spinks–Marino Casem Stadium after a deadly homecoming shooting at the HBCU. The new measures will go into effect during this weekend’s game against Mississippi Valley State.

HBCU prioritizes safety for students and fans

According to university officials, Alcorn State is increasing the number of security personnel on duty and introducing modified procedures to ensure the safety of its campus community and visitors. The changes are designed to make game days more secure while maintaining the university’s tradition of spirited HBCU football experiences.

“The safety and well-being of our campus community remain our highest priority,” the university said in a statement. “These enhanced measures reflect our commitment to providing a secure environment for everyone attending Alcorn State athletic events.”

Updated tailgating and parking procedures

RV tailgating protocols will remain the same. Setup begins Friday, October 24, between noon and 6 p.m., and resumes Saturday, October 25, at 6 a.m. Tailgating is limited to designated areas, and Alcorn State has reminded fans that it is not responsible for items left overnight. Yellow caution tape or barricades are prohibited.

Campus parking lots open at 6 a.m. on game day, and visitors must present parking passes or use cashless payment methods — cash is no longer accepted at any entry point. The main entry gate will only allow access for General Tailgate, Reserved Tailgate, VIP, Premium, RV, and ADA parking.

General Tailgate passes will be available for $65 on-site, while Special Event and General Parking passes will cost $35. The airstrip area will be closed for this game, and vehicles with General Parking passes will be redirected to specific entrances.

Stadium entry and clear bag policy

Stadium gates will open two hours before kickoff. All guests must comply with Alcorn State’s Clear Bag Policy, which allows only transparent plastic bags up to 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches. Non-clear bags should remain in vehicles to avoid delays at security checkpoints.

Alcorn State Post-game and tailgate exit rules

General parking and tailgate visitors must begin exiting the campus within one hour of the game’s conclusion. Reserved tailgate guests have up to two hours to vacate, and all vehicles and equipment must be removed upon departure. RV lots will close at noon on Sunday.

Tailgate passes are mandatory for entry into all tailgate zones. Music must maintain a family-friendly atmosphere, and vulgar lyrics are prohibited. Guests are responsible for cleaning up trash and ash properly and must not dump debris into drains or landscaping. ATVs and oversized side-by-sides remain prohibited.

HBCU transition to Cashless system and ticketing information

The transition to a cashless system for the Lorman, MS-based HBCU extends to parking and ticket sales, where all transactions require debit or credit cards. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance through the official Alcorn Athletics website.

Las Vegas — When it comes to HBCU football, few matchups carry the weight and history of Jackson State and Grambling State. This weekend, that tradition takes a new stage — under the bright lights of Las Vegas, as the two storied programs meet in the Las Vegas Classic at Allegiant Stadium. Both head coaches, Jackson State’s T.C. Taylor and Grambling State’s Mickey Joseph, made it clear during this week’s SWAC coaches call that the biggest challenge might not be the opponent — it might be the distractions that come with Sin City.

For Taylor, whose Jackson State team enters the weekend 5-1 and ranked among the top HBCU and FCS programs in the country, the message has been consistent: treat the trip like business.

“Vegas is still going to be Vegas,” Taylor said. “It’s just my staff and myself — we’ve got to do a good job of keeping these guys locked in. They understand for us, it’s a big conference game. You know, a team that spanked us pretty good last year when we went down to Grambling, so we’re locked in.”

That sense of focus has defined Taylor’s approach since the Tigers’ bye week. He emphasized that his staff used the extra time to self-scout and tighten execution heading into the final stretch.

“We always talk about getting to this part of the season as our third or fourth quarter,” he said. “We’re right where we want to be — still in control of our own destiny.”

Grambling State up for the challenge

On the other sideline, Grambling State head coach Mickey Joseph is also emphasizing focus, though for slightly different reasons. His team is coming off a 20-16 win over Arkansas–Pine Bluff — one that required resilience after a series of fumbles. Now, Joseph’s biggest concern is helping his players adjust to the travel and atmosphere of Las Vegas. “We’re skipping two time zones,” he explained. “We’ve got to make sure that they listen to what we’re telling them so their bodies will get back in sync come Saturday. It’s going to be more off-the-field things than on-the-field things.”

Joseph, who faced both Ohio State and Jackson State this season, views the matchup as a litmus test for his rebuilding program. “Any time you can play a team of this magnitude, a really good football team, you’ve got to be excited for that opportunity,” he said. “It’s a hill we must climb.”

Jackson State and Grambling State bring HBCU spotlight to Las Vegas

Both teams share a similar message — enjoy the moment, but stay disciplined. Taylor wants his Tigers to remember that every game has championship implications. Joseph wants his G-Men to embrace the challenge of playing an HBCU powerhouse on one of the nation’s grandest stages.

When the lights come on in Las Vegas, the glitz and glamour will fade the moment the whistle blows. Then it will be about what it always is in HBCU football — pride, tradition, and the pursuit of victory between two programs that helped shape the sport’s legacy.

Southern University’s coaching carousel has become an expensive habit for the HBCU. Firing Terrence Graves when it did could cost the HBCU program nearly double what patience might have saved.

When Southern fired Eric Dooley in November 2023, it agreed to a $460,000 settlement, spread over three annual payments of $153,333.33 each — in 2024, 2025, and 2026 — along with continued salary and benefits through the end of 2023. That deal remains active, meaning the university will make its final installment in January 2026.

Less than two years later, on October 20, 2025, Southern dismissed Terrence Graves midway through his second season as head coach. His contract, which runs through December 31, 2026, pays $250,000 annually and includes a liquidated damages clause that guarantees the full remaining value of the contract if he’s fired “without cause” during the first two years.

That means Southern is on the hook for Graves’ salary for the rest of 2025 and 2026 —pro rated at $250k per year — unless the board classifies the firing for cause or offsets the total with his next job.

The timing matters. Had the university waited until 2026, the buyout would have dropped to $75,000 total under the contract’s third-year clause. Instead, Southern is now facing a payout that could be nearly seven times higher.

Between Dooley’s $460,000 settlement and Graves’ estimated $500,000 buyout, Southern University will have paid close to $1 million in coaching severance since 2023 — all before hiring its next permanent leader.

For one of the proudest brands in HBCU football, it’s a costly reminder that change at the top can come with a heavy bill — and that timing those decisions can make all the financial difference.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Few names carry more respect in HBCU football circles than Fred McNair, and now the longtime Alcorn State leader finds himself back in the spotlight — this time in Baton Rouge. Southern University announced Monday that McNair will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season following the dismissal of Terrence Graves.

McNair, who joined the Southern University coaching staff in the fall of 2024, brings both stability and championship pedigree to a program searching for direction. The older brother of the late NFL quarterback Steve McNair, Fred McNair spent seven seasons as head coach at Alcorn State, where he guided the Braves to multiple SWAC East Division titles and a conference championship in 2019.

After stepping down from Alcorn State following the 2023 season, McNair arrived in Baton Rouge as the Jaguars’ tight ends coach. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach prior to the 2025 season and then to co-offensive coordinator. He shared duties with Mark Frederick — as Southern tried to spark an offense that had grown stagnant. Now, in a matter of days, he’s gone from co-coordinator to caretaker of one of the most tradition-rich programs in HBCU football.

Fred McNair led Alcorn State to four consecutive SWAC East titles and two conference titles from 2016 through 2019.

McNair will lead Southern against his HBCU

At Alcorn, McNair’s teams played with discipline and clarity. They didn’t waste possessions, didn’t flinch late in games, and often made the routine look surgical. That’s what Southern is hoping to rediscover after a 1–6 start that has seen it average just 17.5 points per game while surrendering nearly twice that.

The road ahead offers no favors. Southern still has Florida A&M at home, back-to-back road trips to Arkansas–Pine Bluff and his beloved Alcorn State, then closes with Texas Southern and the Bayou Classic against Grambling. McNair’s challenge isn’t so much about running the table as much as giving a team that’s been searching for rhythm a sense of direction again.

McNair has long emphasized the basics — execution, confidence, and consistency — as the difference between good teams and great ones.

The Work in Front of McNair

This Southern University team hasn’t lacked effort. It’s been details — missed red-zone chances, penalties, and turnovers at the wrong time — that have undone its progress. The Jaguars have reached the red zone 19 times this season but scored touchdowns on less than half those trips. McNair’s job now is less about installing a new system and more about restoring belief.

He inherits a few bright spots: Trey Holly’s 513 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Ckelby Givens’ 7.5 sacks up front, and a defense that, despite its inconsistencies, plays hard through every possession. But numbers won’t tell the story of how McNair’s steady presence lands in a locker room that’s been through change, frustration, and noise.

That’s where his strength lies — not in slogans or flash, but in calm. McNair doesn’t raise his voice to be heard; he coaches until he’s understood. And that’s exactly what Southern University needs right now: a steady hand in a season that’s lost its rhythm, but maybe not its soul.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University has parted ways with head football coach Terrence Graves, the school confirmed Monday, marking the end of a short and turbulent tenure for one of the most tradition-rich programs in HBCU football. The move comes just two days after the Jaguars’ 24–3 Homecoming loss to Prairie View A&M dropped them to 1–6 on the season.

Graves, who was hired in December 2023, led Southern University to an 8–5 record and a SWAC West Division championship in his first season in 2024. However, his second campaign unraveled quickly. The Jaguars’ lone win this fall came against Mississippi Valley State, while their offense struggled to find consistency and their defense failed to close out key games.

The decision to dismiss Graves was made amid growing frustration from fans and alumni who are accustomed to the program competing for SWAC titles. Southern’s Director of Athletics, Roman Banks, hinted at possible changes following Saturday’s loss, saying the university would “evaluate the process” moving forward. By Monday, that evaluation had reached its conclusion.

Fred McNair, SWAC

McNair Steps In as Interim Head Coach

Southern University announced that co-offensive coordinator Fred McNair will assume interim head coaching duties for the remainder of the season. McNair, who was promoted to a larger role earlier this month in an attempt to spark the Jaguars’ struggling offense, is a familiar name in HBCU football circles. He previously served as head coach at Alcorn State, where he led the Braves to multiple SWAC titles before joining Southern’s staff.

McNair will now be tasked with stabilizing the program and restoring confidence in the locker room as Southern enters the final stretch of its schedule. His leadership will be tested immediately with the Jaguars set to face Florida A&M — another powerhouse HBCU program — this weekend.

Short Tenure, High Expectations

Graves’ departure marks the second time in as many years that Southern University has fired a head coach it hired. His predecessor, Eric Dooley, was dismissed midway through the 2024 season despite leading the team to a division title in his first year. The back-to-back coaching changes underscore the high expectations that come with leading one of the SWAC’s flagship institutions. Both hires were made by

Before coming to Southern, Graves had a long résumé as an assistant coach at several programs and briefly served as interim head coach at Grambling State University in 2021. His experience across multiple HBCU programs made him an appealing candidate when Southern sought stability after Dooley’s exit. But the 2025 campaign — plagued by offensive struggles and inconsistent execution — proved too steep a hill to climb.

A Program Searching for Direction

Southern University, one of the most storied names in HBCU football, now turns once again to an interim coach in hopes of salvaging the season. The Jaguars have not had a losing season since 2019, and fan patience has worn thin amid high expectations in Baton Rouge.

For now, the focus shifts to McNair, who inherits a proud program seeking both stability and a spark. The Jaguars still have time to finish strong, but after another early coaching change, one thing is clear — Southern University expects to win, and the standard remains as demanding as ever.

Few programs in HBCU football carry expectations as high as Southern University, and with the Jaguars sitting at 1–6, head coach Terrence Graves finds himself at the center of mounting pressure. Speaking during the SWAC coaches’ weekly call on Monday, Graves acknowledged the team’s struggles but insisted that his focus remains steady — and his faith, unshaken.

“As of right now, I’m the head football coach at Southern University,” Graves said. “It’s business as usual. Until something changes, I’m going to keep doing what I do.”

Staying Grounded in Baton Rouge

Graves began the call by addressing how a tough season has affected him personally and professionally.

“I’d rather be six and one than one and six,” he said. “But I’m at peace with who I am and where I am.” He described himself as a competitor, but also a man of faith who refuses to let circumstances dictate his composure. “You have two choices in life,” he said. “You either put your head down and go, ‘woe is me,’ or you keep working and fight through it. If you keep fighting, you’ll come out better on the other side.”

That steady message resonates across Southern University’s locker room, where Graves says his players continue to fight despite the adversity. He pointed to effort and belief as signs of life within the team.

“You know, these guys have fight in them,” he said. “What we put in them and teach them — that’s what shows up. Everything in life isn’t going to go how you expect, but you’ve got to keep fighting so that eventually you win.”

Trei Oliver and Terrence Graves pose at the 2025 MEAC/SWAC Challenge press conference.

Accountability and Reflection

When asked about self-evaluation, Graves admitted the mirror conversation starts with him. “I got to be better for us to be better,” he said. “You never hear me complaining about circumstances. This is a collision sport, not a contact sport. Injuries happen, and it’s next man up.”

That mindset, he said, reflects how he intends to approach these final weeks — with honesty, humility, and persistence. As one of the most visible HBCU football coaches in the country, Graves understands that speculation comes with the territory. Athletic director Roman Banks’ recent postgame remarks suggested internal discussions about the team’s direction, but Graves said his communication with Banks has remained consistent.

“We talk every week,” he noted. “We’ve had those conversations. As of right now, I’m the coach. We’ve got meetings tonight, practice tonight — business as usual.”

HBCU rivalry game looms

Despite the noise surrounding Southern University, Graves has emphasized stability for his players. “Relationships matter,” he said. “When you pour good things into them, it sticks.” He noted that his focus has been on reinforcing positive messages rather than dwelling on negativity. “Somebody has to be positive,” Graves said. “It’s our responsibility to reassure them of what’s good and what we need to focus on. These are life lessons — not just football lessons.”

As the Jaguars prepare for Florida A&M, Graves’ calm approach remains in stark contrast to the speculation outside the program. He’s determined to keep the team unified and focused on improvement, regardless of what comes next.

“We don’t waver,” he said. “We stay even keel. We keep working. That’s the job.”

The eyes of the HBCU world remain fixed on Baton Rouge as speculation still looms to Graves’ future. Graves, meanwhile, has his focus on FAMU and he’s hoping that his players will follow suit. Whether or not they will be following him out on Saturday remains up in the air.

HBCUs are turning heads this preseason with several impressive wins in what college basketball fans call a “secret scrimmage.” A secret scrimmage is a closed-door matchup between Division I programs—no fans, no media, and no official scorekeeping—that coaches use to evaluate their teams before the season begins.

Until this year, NCAA rules restricted public exhibitions to non-Division I opponents unless for charity, pushing most schools toward these private sessions. But a recent rule change now allows two full exhibitions against any four-year program, meaning secret scrimmages could soon become less secret—and more valuable for exposure, especially for HBCUs.

This month, several HBCUs showed they can hold their own. Arkansas–Pine Bluff topped Arkansas–Little Rock 77-69 in a secret scrimmage that later surfaced online. Transfer forward Jaquan Scott led the Golden Lions with 24 points, while guards Alex Mirhosseini and Quion Williams added 19 and 11, respectively—all three newcomers making strong first impressions.

Meanwhile, Alabama A&M notched a 74-73 win over Samford in a public matchup, displaying balance and experience. Alcorn State also earned a 64-59 victory over North Alabama in its own secret scrimmage, paced by returner Tycen McDaniels (20 points) and transfer Jameel Morris from FDU.

For HBCUs, these preseason contests—whether secret scrimmages or public exhibitions—offer a valuable measuring stick before the real games begin. They also showcase the depth, talent, and transfer power many HBCUs are bringing into the 2025 season. If these early results are any indication, expect more than a few surprises once the wins start counting.

The post HBCU Fraternity Suspended on Homecoming for Alledged Hazing appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Southern University has suspended its chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. over hazing allegations, according to a report from WAFB 9 News in Baton Rouge. The decision came during Homecoming Week, one of the most celebrated times on an HBCU campus.

Cease-and-desist issued amid hazing investigation

In a letter sent by the university’s Director of Student Leadership and Engagement to the chapter president. Alpha Phi Alpha was notified that it is “accused of reported hazing allegations in violation of Southern University’s hazing policy,” WAFB reported. The university issued a cease-and-desist order while a full investigation continues.

Under the suspension, the fraternity loses all rights and privileges as an active organization on campus. Members are prohibited from wearing paraphernalia—such as clothing, bags, jewelry, or key chains—that identify the fraternity. The chapter is also banned from reserving space or hosting any events on or off campus.

The letter warns that any violation of the order could impact the fraternity’s future standing. Even if the investigation clears the organization. WAFB 9 reached out for a comment, but as of the publication of this article, no one has released an additional statement.

Southern University’s renewed stance against hazing

The suspension comes as Southern continues addressing the issue of hazing within its campus community. The university saw national attention earlier this year following the death of 20-year-old Caleb Wilson, a mechanical-engineering student and member of the Human Jukebox band.

Wilson died after an off-campus, unsanctioned fraternity event that led the university to halt all membership intake and issue a cease-and-desist order to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. chapter. His death prompted a university-wide review of Greek life and a renewed push for student safety.

Southern joins broader HBCU push for accountability

The latest allegations against Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity highlight Southern’s continued effort to enforce its anti-hazing policy. The move reflects a growing trend within the HBCU community. One that emphasises taking firmer stances against hazing and other unsafe initiation practices.

As the investigation continues, Southern University’s actions during homecoming week reinforce a message that resonates across the HBCU community. Hazing and unapproved pledging tactics have no place in campus life, even within the proud traditions of historically Black fraternities and sororities.

TALLAHASSEE — What had been billed as a stop on the conservative movement BLEXIT’s “Educate to Liberate” campus tour at Florida A&M University (FAMU) during its Homecoming week has been canceled, organizers announced this week. The tour, launched by activist and commentator Candace Owens and affiliated with Turning Point USA, was scheduled to appear at FAMU on Oct. 17 during the week-long “Eternal World Tour” Homecoming celebration.

According to promotional materials, the event was intended to spark conversation on historically Black college and university (HBCU) campuses about issues of empowerment, personal responsibility, and alternative political perspectives.

However, the FAMU stop was pulled from the itinerary without a public explanation. “We will announce a new date soon,” a spokesperson said in an email the day the tour stop was planned, without explaining the reason for the event’s being called off, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

The cancellation comes as students and alumni return to Tallahassee for one of the most anticipated events of the HBCU calendar. FAMU’s Homecoming week traditionally serves as both a reunion and cultural celebration for thousands of supporters, drawing widespread attention from media and visitors each year.

The decision to cancel has sparked discussion online about the timing and nature of outside political groups hosting events during HBCU Homecoming season — a time typically centered on unity, tradition, and school pride.

While no new date has been confirmed, BLEXIT representatives indicated that the organization still intends to visit Florida A&M University at a later time as part of its ongoing campus tour.

The HBCU football world might be watching one of its fastest risers make another leap. According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has emerged as a candidate to replace Trent Dilfer, who was fired earlier this month at UAB.

Vannini noted that Jackson is “among the names being considered” for the job. That alone shows how quickly his profile has grown. Jackson hasn’t been at Prairie View long. He took over at the HBCU in January after leading Valdosta State to a Division II national title appearance and two Gulf South Conference crowns.

Early Success at Prairie View A&M

Jackson has made an immediate impact since arriving at PVAMU. In his first season, he’s guided the Panthers to the top of the SWAC West standings with a 3–0 conference record (4–2 overall).

Up next is a crucial road matchup against Southern University. A win would push Prairie View A&M to 4–0 in division play, setting up a strong run toward the SWAC title game. For a first-year HBCU head coach, that’s no small feat.

A Track Record of Building Programs

Before taking the Prairie View job, Jackson earned his reputation as a defensive strategist and program builder. The former Texas Southern player spent time on multiple staffs across the region. He climbed the ranks through stops at Colorado Mesa, Texas State, and Abilene Christian.

At Valdosta State, Jackson found his groove. He turned the Blazers back into a powerhouse in just three years, posting a 30–9 record and earning AFCA National Coach of the Year honors. His teams were tough, disciplined, and fearless — qualities that defined his rise and style of coaching.

HBCU Trent Dilfer Tremaine Jackson Prairie View A&M
Culture First, Always

When Prairie View called, Jackson wasted no time setting a tone. His viral post, titled “Panther Portal Understanding,” outlined strict rules for transfer recruits.

“When I follow you, there’s a four-hour window to follow back — or we’re done.”

That no-nonsense message reflected his philosophy: direct, unapologetic, and rooted in accountability.

Challenging the Status Quo

Jackson also made headlines for challenging recruiting tactics at bigger programs. Earlier this year, he criticized the “spectacle over substance” approach at the FBS level, arguing that too many players were being sold hype instead of development.

“If it doesn’t build you emotionally, mentally, and spiritually,” he wrote, “don’t sell it.”

That kind of authenticity has made Tremaine Jackson stand out in a sport full of slogans and coach-speak. Whether or not UAB ultimately hires Jackson to replace Trent Dilfer, his inclusion in the conversation says plenty.

When Nike unveiled the Yardrunners 6.0 Air Max ’95 collection, the sneakers immediately turned heads. But the real power of this campaign isn’t just in the design. It’s in the people. This year’s chapter in the Yardrunners story continues a full-circle tradition of HBCU alumni using their platforms to spotlight the next generation of trailblazers, creators, and leaders from their own community.

Alumni Building Alumni

The Yardrunners program began with a simple yet radical idea from two Howard University graduates, Richard Palmer and Arinze Emeagwali. They met on campus and bonded over their love of sneakers long before joining the Swoosh.

Years later, after each had built careers in marketing — Palmer with Jordan Brand and later Nike HQ, Emeagwali with Nike NYC — they reconnected to reshape how Nike engaged HBCUs.

In 2020, they pitched a concept that reimagined Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” message as “You Can’t Stop HBCUs.” Their goal was clear: to honor the people who make HBCUs thrive through authentic storytelling and design. From that idea came Yardrunners, a campaign that now serves as Nike’s bridge to the HBCU community.

Culture Carried Forward

That founding vision still guides the work today. Two HBCU alumni now lead the Yardrunners initiative within Nike. They collaborate with Black-led creative agencies such as League Twenty Two to ensure each release reflects the community’s authentic voice.

The imagery, language, and style now stretch far beyond product drops. Nike’s social channels, billboards, and editorial platforms feature real HBCU faces and stories. According to VIBE.com, the campaign’s purpose remains consistent — to elevate HBCU students and alumni through storytelling, products, and genuine collaboration.

HBCUs as the Heartbeat

This year’s Air Max ’95 Yardrunners 6.0 campaign spotlights four iconic institutions — Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University — and the people who represent their legacy.

At Florida A&M, Yardrunners captures the energy of Rattler Nation. Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching “100,” continues the school’s musical tradition.

Legacy as a Loop

Each of these individuals carries forward what Yardrunners represents — HBCU excellence in motion. And each new campaign expands that circle.

From 2021’s HBCU dance showcase featuring Texas Southern alum Megan Thee Stallion, to 2023’s Morehouse Nike Terminator collaboration with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, to 2024’s “Started on the Yard” campaign narrated by Stephen A. Smith, Yardrunners has centered alumni who lift others as they climb.

That lineage continues with Yardrunners 6.0, which joins Nike’s growing collection of HBCU-driven releases. “When current students look back, they’ll be able to say Yardrunners was part of their HBCU experience,” said Palmer. “That means the world to us.”

Culture by the Culture

Yardrunners 6.0 isn’t a typical marketing campaign. It’s an ecosystem of alumni using creative power to spotlight others walking the same halls they once did.

From Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton to the brick yards of HBCU campuses, it shows that authenticity isn’t a trend — it’s the foundation of legacy.

Available October 11 at select retailers and on the SNKRS app October 14, Yardrunners 6.0 is more than a product drop. It’s a story of HBCU pride told by the people who live it.

Two HBCU campuses in Mississippi — Jackson State and Alcorn State — have reported shootings during Homecoming events.

At Alcorn State, authorities say a shooting occurred near an old gas station on campus around 6:30 p.m., resulting in one woman’s death and two other people being rushed to the hospital. The campus was immediately locked down, and students were told to shelter in place until officials gave an all clear. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.

At Jackson State, reports surfaced of a shooting near the tailgate section of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on West Street. A child was reportedly struck and transported to UMMC by Jackson Police in a patrol vehicle. Capitol PD and JPD are investigating, but no suspect details have been confirmed so far.

These shootings come on the heels of a shooting at South Carolina State University last weekend that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler.

Across these three incidents — at Alcorn State, Jackson State, and South Carolina State — common threads emerge. Each incident happened during or around homecoming festivities. The locations varied: tailgate zones, campus peripheries, and student housing areas. At Jackson State, the victim was a child.

These shootings highlight how gatherings meant to celebrate college traditions at HBCUs can be interrupted by violence. As investigations continue, the institutions and law enforcement agencies involved bear the challenge of uncovering what happened, why, and how to prevent recurrence.

Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected at Alcorn State, Jackson State, and South Carolina State during these difficult times. The HBCU community is united in its denouncing of these events.

JACKSON, Miss. — In a matchup hyped as the game of the year in HBCU football, Jackson State and Alabama State delivered. Both teams entered undefeated in the SWAC East, and by the end, it was Jackson State who stood alone atop the division after a breathtaking 38–34 victory Saturday night at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Fourth-Quarter Drama Defines a Classic

This one lived up to every bit of the hype.

 • With 7:07 left, Alabama State quarterback Andrew Body found Jalen Jones for an 8-yard touchdown, trimming Jackson State’s lead to 31–27.
 • Moments later, a Jackson State fumble gave the Hornets a short field. Jamarie Hostzclaw capitalized with a 15-yard scoring run to push Alabama State ahead 34–31 with 4:36 remaining.
 • But the Tigers refused to fold. JaCobian Morgan engineered a clutch drive, culminating in an 18-yard touchdown strike to Nate Rembert with 50 seconds left, reclaiming the lead at 38–34.
 • Alabama State nearly answered in miraculous fashion, driving 69 yards in under a minute — only for the final pass to be stopped at the 1-yard line as time expired.

Jackson State fans roared as the Tigers’ defense held, preserving a win that could define the SWAC East race.

Momentum Shifts and Key Drives

The teams traded control throughout:

 • Jackson State led 17–13 at halftime behind Morgan’s second-quarter touchdown to Ja’Naylon Dupree.
 • Alabama State momentarily went ahead in the third, 20–17, before Jackson State responded to enter the final quarter up 24–20.
 • The final 10 minutes became a highlight reel of counterpunches between two of the conference’s most balanced offenses.

Statistical Leaders

Jackson State (5–1, 3–0 SWAC):

 • JaCobian Morgan: 16-of-23, 187 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT
 • Rushing: 45 carries, 257 yards (5.7 avg)
 • Ja’Naylon Dupree: 4 catches, 53 yards, 2 TD
 • Nate Rembert: 2 catches, 31 yards, 1 TD

Alabama State (4–2, 2–1 SWAC):

 • Andrew Body: 20-of-30, 349 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
 • Jamarie Hostzclaw: 10 carries, 53 yards, 2 TD
 • Top receivers: M. Djete (82 yards), J. Jones (72 yards, 1 TD), T. Harrell (66 yards)

The Stakes: SWAC East Control

Both teams entered undefeated in SWAC East play, and this clash had major championship implications. With the win, Jackson State now sits alone atop the division, controlling its destiny for a return to the SWAC Championship Game.

The atmosphere matched the stakes — a packed crowd, national TV audience, and a finish worthy of the hype. For fans of HBCU football, this one will be remembered as an instant classic.

Homecoming 2025 at Jackson State University will be a celebration of rhythm, sound, and school pride. When the Tigers face Alabama State on Saturday, they’ll debut new uniforms that pay homage to their marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South. This year’s design does more than refresh the Tigers’ look. It tells a story — one that connects football, music, and HBCU excellence in a single statement of culture.

A Look Worthy of the Sonic Boom

The new uniforms draw inspiration directly from the band’s iconic style. They feature a navy blue, light blue, and white color palette — the same combination that defines the Sonic Boom’s sharp presence on the field.

The numerals and trim mirror the band’s signature shoulder detailing. “JACKSON STATE” runs boldly down the pant legs in white, matching the band’s vest accents and gauntlets. Together, these details create a look that feels both modern and timeless.

Even the helmets echo the band’s energy. The navy shell features the player’s number on one side and a light blue “J” outlined in white on the other. Two light blue stripes cut across the top, finished with a clean white facemask. Every element ties back to the spirit of the Sonic Boom.

A Homecoming Stage Like No Other

Saturday’s game already carries weight. Jackson State and Alabama State enter as the top teams in the SWAC. With postseason hopes on the line, this showdown will be one of the biggest in HBCU football this season.

But the unveiling of these uniforms adds another layer to the moment. It’s a visual celebration of legacy — a connection between the roar of the crowd, the rhythm of the drumline, and the unity of the HBCU community.

A Celebration of Sound, Pride, and Legacy

Jackson State’s new look captures what makes HBCUs unique. It fuses athletic competition with musical and cultural tradition, creating something that stands out across the college football landscape.

The decision to honor the Sonic Boom through design highlights JSU’s commitment to storytelling through style. It reminds fans that music, movement, pride, and performance all share the same heartbeat.

As the Tigers take the field under the bright lights, the connection between the band and the team will be clear. This Homecoming isn’t just a game — it’s a performance that celebrates the full scope of HBCU culture.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM on ESPNU, and the entire country will be watching as Jackson State and the Sonic Boom of the South brings its rhythm to the gridiron once again.

Or else.

]]>
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University (FAMU), the nation’s top public HBCU, could soon have a roadway renamed in honor of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. A new proposal in the Florida legislature, House Bill 113, would require several state universities and colleges — including FAMU — to redesignate local streets with Kirk’s name.

According to WKMG in Orlando, the bill was filed by State Representative Kevin Steele, who has been outspoken following Charlie Kirk’s assassination last month. The legislation directs university boards to rename designated roadways after Charlie Kirk or risk losing state funding. For FAMU, the bill identifies W. Osceola Street in Tallahassee to be renamed Charlie James Kirk Street.

If approved, the mandate would take effect immediately, giving the state’s lone public HBCU and other state institutions 90 days to comply. Supporters of the bill argue that it will serve as a lasting tribute to Charlie Kirk, whose death on a college campus in September drew national attention.

This is not the first effort to memorialize the conservative figure in Florida. Last month, Lake County unanimously approved the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway, while New College of Florida announced plans to commission a statue in his likeness.

The proposal has stirred discussion across higher education circles, especially at HBCUs such as FAMU, where debates about political influence and cultural representation continue to shape campus identity. If passed, the legislation would not only rename a prominent street near FAMU but also mark another symbolic step in Florida’s broader push to memorialize the fallen podcaster statewide.

House Bill 113 now awaits committee review before advancing to the full legislature for consideration.

Jackson State dominated Alabama A&M in every phase of the game, rolling to a 57–24 victory in the Gulf Coast Challenge on Saturday evening at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. The Tigers erupted for 702 yards of total offense — 388 on the ground and 314 through the air — as they improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in SWAC play.

Morgan leads the charge

Quarterback JaCobian Morgan delivered one of his finest performances for Jackson State, completing 21 of 31 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He added 120 yards and a touchdown on the ground, accounting for five scores overall. His connection with Shemar Savage proved deadly — the two linked up for a 22-yard strike early and a 60-yard bomb later in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 24-7 lead. Ja’Naylon Dupree also caught two touchdowns, including a 37-yarder in the fourth quarter that iced the win.

Jackson State, TC Taylor

Jackson State run game unstoppable

Jackson State’s ground attack was relentless, gashing Alabama A&M for nearly eight yards per carry. Travis Terrell Jr. broke loose for 103 yards on just seven carries, including a 71-yard burst in the fourth quarter that set up a score. Donerio Davenport and Emari Matthews each punched in short touchdowns to cap long drives, while Ahmad Miller added 72 yards on the ground. By the final whistle, Jackson State had racked up 30 first downs and controlled the tempo through a balanced, explosive attack.

Defensive response and discipline

On defense, the Tigers forced two turnovers and limited A&M’s rushing attack to just 59 yards on 26 attempts. Cornerback Jace Ward grabbed a key interception in the second quarter that set up a short touchdown drive, swinging momentum firmly toward Jackson State. Linebacker Quincy Ivory anchored a unit that recorded 73 total tackles and three tackles for JSU.

A complete team win

Alabama A&M quarterback Cornelious Brown threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns, but the Bulldogs never found a consistent rhythm. Jackson State scored on its first possession of each half and closed the game on a 17-0 run. It was a statement victory for a program that continues to find its groove midseason.

With the Gulf Coast Classic win, Jackson State strengthened its position as a SWAC contender and showed that its blend of quarterback play, physical running, and depth on defense can overwhelm any opponent on a neutral field.

The post FAMU fined, reprimanded for announcer’s comments appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
FAMU has been officially reprimanded and fined by the SWAC following the controversy surrounding comments made by its longtime band announcer during Saturday’s football game against Alabama State University. The SWAC announced on Tuesday that Florida A&M University will face a $10,000 fine and that its public address announcer will be suspended for the next two games.

The SWAC’s Decision

According to the league office, the actions fall under the SWAC Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship. The governing body said it issued the reprimand in direct response to “inappropriate comments and invective language” broadcast over the public address system during the contest. The statement underscored that such behavior will always be met with swift and firm action, pointing to a “zero tolerance” approach toward unsportsmanlike conduct.

The reprimand specifically addresses comments made by Joe Bullard, the veteran voice of the Marching “100.” Bullard drew widespread criticism after making remarks about Alabama State’s plus-sized dance team, the Honey Beez, at halftime. Clips of the exchange quickly spread online, sparking national discussion within HBCU circles and beyond.

In addition to the fine and suspension, the SWAC acknowledged the apology issued by Florida A&M University, saying it trusted the institution to prevent similar issues from happening again.

The Apology and FAMU Response

Bullard issued a statement on Sunday, taking responsibility for his words and offering apologies to the Honey Beez, Alabama State University, and FAMU supporters. He admitted that what he intended as lighthearted banter instead came across as hurtful and disrespectful.

“My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful,” Bullard said.

FAMU President Marva Johnson also addressed the incident in a statement. She called the announcer’s remarks “inappropriate and offensive,” stressing that they did not reflect the values of the university or its proud band tradition. Johnson apologized directly to Alabama State, the Honey Beez, and their fans. She also highlighted the Honey Beez’s impact on HBCU culture, praising their artistry, discipline, and role as cultural ambassadors.

“As an institution, we take great pride in the Marching ‘100’ and the atmosphere our band creates on game day,” Johnson said. “But with that pride comes responsibility. We must do better to ensure that every performer on the field is treated with the respect they deserve.”

Greater Impact

The Honey Beez, founded in 2004, have built a reputation for challenging stereotypes and representing inclusivity within HBCU band culture. Their performances have been showcased on national stages and are widely celebrated across the country. The public reprimand against FAMU adds another layer to the broader conversation about how announcers and institutions shape perceptions in cultural spaces where representation matters deeply.

Alabama State President Quinton Ross voiced strong support for the Honey Beez, calling them “bold, fearless, and celebrated ambassadors” for HBCUs. His statement emphasized that careless remarks should never overshadow the talent and inspiration groups like the Honey Beez provide.

For FAMU, the reprimand serves as a reminder of the responsibility it carries as a flagship HBCU with a world-renowned band. The school has pledged to review its internal policies around game-day announcements, ensuring that the atmosphere it is known for is one of both celebration and respect.

The fallout from the failed Georgia Football Classic at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta continues, as questions mount from HBCU football fans over ticket refunds and accountability from the event’s organizers.

On Sept. 30, social media began circulating screenshots of a concerning message allegedly tied to the event. While its authenticity could not be confirmed at first, the same message appeared multiple times. By Oct. 1, the notice was found posted on the official website, GeorgiaFootballClassic.com.

The Statement

“This event is no longer taking place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. You don’t need to do a thing. We’ll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer. It should appear on your account within 14–21 days. Please note: If the tickets were transferred to you. The refund will go to the fan who originally purchased the tickets from Ticketmaster.”

HBCU Georgia Football Classic Mercedes-Benz Stadium Atlanta

That third line — noting that funds had already been transferred to the organizers — has fueled growing unease among fans. Given the organizers’ troubled track record over the summer, many ticket holders have expressed doubts about when, or if, their money will be returned. Social media has since been flooded with frustration, regret, and anger over the lack of transparency and communication.

How We Got Here

The Georgia Football Classic was originally billed as an HBCU showcase matchup between the Florida A&M Rattlers and the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, with both marching bands set to perform inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But on Sept. 30, organizers abruptly announced the game’s removal from the venue and scrambled to identify possible alternatives. Morehouse College, Kennesaw State, and Clark Atlanta University, all located in Atlanta, were floated as potential hosts.

Ultimately, FAMU and MVSU officials ended the speculation with a joint announcement: the game would not be salvaged in Atlanta. Instead, it would return to its original location in Itta Bena, Mississippi — rescheduled for Nov. 29, just four days before the original Atlanta date.

The collapse left fans reeling, with many already locked into hotel deposits, Airbnbs, flights, and rental car reservations. FAMU National Alumni Association President Artisha Polk issued a letter to alumni assuring them that the Omni Hotel would cancel all reservations without penalty in light of the cancellation. Unfortunately, many others were not as fortunate, absorbing losses tied to their travel plans.

What was once pitched as a premier HBCU football showcase has instead become a case study in disorganization and disappointment, leaving thousands of loyal fans demanding answers — and their refunds.

Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) longtime band announcer has issued a public apology after making remarks about Alabama State University’s plus-sized HBCU dance team, the Honey Beez. The comments triggered widespread criticism during Saturday’s football game in Tallahassee.

Joe Bullard, the veteran public address announcer for the Marching “100,” released a statement Sunday. He acknowledged the harm caused by his words.

“My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful,” Bullard said. “For that, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt apologies: first and foremost to the ASU Honey Beez, to Alabama State University, to the Alabama State University Marching Band, to Florida A&M University, and to the fans and supporters of both institutions who were in attendance, or anyone else who heard my words. To anyone who was offended, I am truly sorry.”

Bullard made the remarks during halftime of Alabama State’s game at FAMU. Shortly afterward, clips of the moment spread quickly online. Alumni, fans, and HBCU supporters criticized the language and called it disrespectful toward a team that has earned national recognition for its talent and cultural impact.

Florida A&M President: “We Must Do Better”

FAMU President Marva Johnson responded to the controversy with a detailed statement on Sunday evening. She described Bullard’s words as “inappropriate and offensive” and emphasized that they did not reflect the values of the university or its storied band program.

“As an institution, we take great pride in the Marching ‘100’ and the atmosphere our band creates on game day,” Johnson said. “But with that pride comes responsibility. The language used during halftime fell short of our standards. We must do better to ensure that every performer on the field is treated with the respect they deserve.”

Johnson directly apologized to Alabama State University, the Honey Beez, and their supporters. Furthermore, she highlighted the group’s excellence within HBCU culture.

“The Honey Beez are exemplars of discipline, school pride, and artistry,” she said. “Their performances inspire audiences across the country. That should never be diminished by careless remarks, no matter the intent.”

In addition, Johnson announced that the university will review its internal protocols for public announcements at athletic events. She explained that FAMU plans to use this moment to reinforce respect and accountability within the game-day experience.

Alabama State President: “Their Light Cannot Be Dimmed”

Alabama State University President Quinton Ross addressed the Honey Beez directly, offering both praise and support in the aftermath of the controversy. He underscored their role as cultural ambassadors and their impact on fans nationwide.

“Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy that you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU,” Ross said. “Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”

Ross also emphasized the broader significance of the moment for HBCUs.

“Within HBCU culture, our bands and dance teams are more than entertainment—they are institutions,” he said. “When someone disrespects that tradition, they don’t just hurt a single group. They undermine something that generations have built. The Honey Beez reflect courage, creativity, and excellence. We stand firmly with them.”

A Legacy Bigger Than the Moment

The Honey Beez, founded in 2004, have become a celebrated part of Alabama State’s band program. The group actively challenges stereotypes and expands representation for plus-sized dancers in HBCU band culture. Their high-energy performances have reached national audiences through halftime shows, television appearances, and viral clips.

Moreover, their continued presence speaks to a larger cultural legacy. For many fans, they symbolize both tradition and progress inside HBCU spaces. Saturday’s incident reignited conversations about how public figures influence narratives around these performers and the respect they deserve.

As first reported by HBCU Gameday on August 12, the uncertainty surrounding the Georgia Football Classic has finally ended. The much-anticipated matchup between Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Mississippi Valley State University will no longer take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Organizers officially scrapped the Atlanta game on September 29. Now, the contest has a new date and a new location.

Early signs of trouble

The Georgia Football Classic aimed to revive the energy of the Atlanta Football Classic (AFC), a major HBCU Classic from 1989 to 2014. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta staged the AFC at the old Georgia Dome, drawing huge crowds and making it a staple of the HBCU football calendar. FAMU’s strong Atlanta fan base, paired with opponents like Southern University and Tennessee State, turned the game into a fall spectacle.

The 2003 FAMU–TSU matchup drew 70,185 fans. In 2002 and 2004, the event drew 67,000 fans annually, with attendance figures rivaling some bowl games.

In August, John Grant, ESPN Director of Special Events and former AFC organizer, explained to HBCU Gameday that the landscape has changed. Grant, who now leads the MEAC–SWAC Challenge and Celebration Bowl, called reviving a large-scale Atlanta HBCU classic “monumental, if not impossible.” He pointed to marketing and logistical challenges that didn’t exist during the AFC’s peak.

Announcement and silence

Momentum built when FAMU Athletic Director Angela Suggs announced during the alumni association meeting that the 2025 game would move from Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. MVSU Athletics followed with a statement:

“Mississippi Valley State University Athletics is proud to announce that our 2025 football clash with FAMU, originally scheduled to be played at Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, will now take place at Atlanta’s iconic Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, October 4, 2025.”

After that announcement, communication stalled. With less than 60 days before kickoff, there were no advertisements, no tickets on sale through Ticketmaster, FAMU, or MVSU, and no public event details.

When HBCU Gameday pressed for answers, one promoter demanded a retraction. The reporting team held its ground, pointing out that the event was “in limbo” without ticket availability. We also pledged to follow up when official details surfaced.

Déjà vu in Tampa

Meanwhile, a similar situation unfolded in Tampa. The proposed Tampa Football Classic, featuring Bethune–Cookman and Southern, was slated for October 20. B-CU Athletic Director Reggie Theus eventually withdrew the program after organizers missed key deadlines. He stressed that he wouldn’t compromise the fan or student-athlete experience without proper infrastructure.

New plan: back to MVSU

The game now has a new plan. It will return to Mississippi Valley State’s home field, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. The later date provides both programs with a clear path forward after weeks of uncertainty.

FAMU issues joint statement

FAMU and MVSU released a joint statement to clarify the new arrangement:

“The SWAC contest on October 4, 2025, a MVSU home game, will not be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. As Mississippi Valley State is the designated home team, the decision has been made to cancel the game in Atlanta and reschedule to Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, Mississippi, on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 2 p.m.

We regret the impact that this unexpected change will have on our fans, and we will make every effort to provide a quality game-day experience during the rescheduled date of competition. … MVSU and FAMU remain committed to excellence on and off the field … Information regarding tickets will be forthcoming on each school’s respective athletics websites.”

HBCU Atlanta FAMU Mississippi Mercedes-Benz Stadium

The statement frames the move as a redirection, not a cancellation. It reaffirms both universities’ commitment to delivering a legitimate HBCU matchup and promises further ticket information soon.

The Big Picture

This pivot highlights a larger reality: grand venue ambitions create excitement, but sustainability matters more. The Georgia Classic’s collapse at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a cautionary tale. The marketing resources and logistical capacity needed to support an HBCU classic of that scale are harder to pull off today than they were in the early 2000s.

Still, the game lives on—back on familiar ground and firmer footing. The matchup will now be played on November 29 at 2 p.m. in Itta Bena, Mississippi, giving fans a new date to circle on their calendars.

Multiple sources have told HBCU Gameday that the Georgia Football Classic between Mississippi Valley State and FAMU will not be played at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game, set for October 4, was supposed to serve as one of the fall’s marquee HBCU football events. Instead, confusion now surrounds the matchup between FAMU and Mississippi Valley State, from the location to tickets and logistics.

Early Announcements Spark Excitement

FAMU athletic director Angela Suggs announced earlier this year that Mississippi Valley State planned to move its home game to the home of the Atlanta Falcons. In August, Mississippi Valley State reinforced that message on its athletics website. The school stated that the 2025 clash with FAMU would move from Rice–Totten Stadium in Itta Bena to Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The release described the event as part of the Georgia Football Classic and promised fans a showcase of HBCU tradition.

HBCU Gameday questions venue

Since the announcement, doubts have grown. HBCU Gameday’s Vaughn R. Wilson called the MVSU ticket office and was told that details were still “forthcoming” less than two months before kickoff. FAMU’s athletics staff redirected fans back to Mississippi Valley State, emphasizing that the Delta Devils held responsibility for the game as a home SWAC contest.

Promoters followed up with a press release to keep momentum alive. Dan Anderson, founder of the Georgia Football Classic, promised a unique atmosphere. He also highlighted the launch of Band VERZUZ Band, a new marching band competition tied to the event.

Where Things Stand Now

The October 4 matchup between Mississippi Valley State and FAMU is still listed, but the venue remains unsettled. The official ticket website continues to display pre-sale options, adding to the uncertainty. HBCU Gameday has contacted Mississippi Valley State University for further clarity and is waiting for a response. Sources indicate the game could still be played in Atlanta, but it will NOT happen at the NFL stadium.

If Mercedes-Benz Stadium does not host the game, Mississippi Valley State may return the contest to Itta Bena. Either way, the Delta Devils and FAMU Rattlers are scheduled to meet in a key SWAC showdown. Until final confirmation arrives, however, one of the fall’s most anticipated HBCU football matchups remains in limbo.

Florida A&M enters the game with a 1-3 record, while Mississippi Valley State continues its search for its first win.

HBCU running backs aren’t just making noise this season — they’re rewriting the rushing leaderboard across the FCS. Through games played Saturday, September 27, 2025, players from Jackson State, North Carolina Central, and Alcorn State are powering their way into national headlines in two key rushing categories: yards per carry and total rushing yards.

Yards Per Carry: Ahmad Miller Sets the Standard

No one in the FCS is more efficient with the football than Ahmad Miller of Jackson State. The junior back is averaging an incredible 8.91 yards per carry, leading the nation. Miller’s explosive start includes a 180-yard, two-touchdown opener against Hampton and another 101-yard performance versus Southern. He’s been the definition of big-play ability for the Tigers’ offense.

Jackson State knocked off Southern 31-17 behind a dominant ground game and timely defense. Miller set the tone with 101 rushing yards on 14 carries, while the Tigers shut out the Jaguars in the fourth quarter to pull away late.

Also representing HBCUs on the efficiency list is Jacorian Sewell of Alcorn State. The senior Bruiser is currently sixth nationally at 7.54 yards per carry, racking up 422 yards on just 56 attempts. Sewell’s production gives Alcorn a dangerous go to back in their offense.

Alcorn State fell in a 24-20 road battle against Arkansas–Pine Bluff after a back-and-forth game. Sewell was a bright spot, ripping off a 33-yard touchdown and adding another short score, but the Braves couldn’t hold a late fourth-quarter lead as UAPB drove 79 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

Total Rushing Yards: Chris Mosley Is the Workhorse

When it comes to sheer volume, Chris Mosley of North Carolina Central is pacing the field. The senior leads the entire FCS with 607 rushing yards through his first six games. Mosley’s season highlights include a monster 182-yard outing against Southern University and a jaw-dropping three-touchdown, 168-yard performance versus North Carolina A&T. He’s proving to be the engine of NCCU’s offense while keeping the Eagles’ championship ambitions alive.

North Carolina Central powered past East Texas A&M 35-21, staying unbeaten in league play. Chris Mosley paced the Eagles’ rushing attack with 72 yards and a score, while the passing game added explosive plays to keep the momentum rolling.

Why It Matters

For HBCU programs, these stats are more than just numbers — they’re proof of the elite talent thriving across Black college football and the impact these athletes can make on the national stage. Miller and Sewell’s efficiency shows how HBCU teams can strike quickly and flip field position in a single snap, while Mosley’s workhorse production underscores the depth and power of HBCU rushing attacks.

With the season just heating up, the race for rushing supremacy could become one of the defining storylines in the FCS — and HBCUs are right at the heart of it.

It looks like it is ready.

One of the simmering rivalries of HBCU football appears to have finally arrived. When Florida A&M (FAMU) University left the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) to join the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), the move reignited old flames while setting the stage for new rivalries. Geography was the main driver—SWAC schools are concentrated across the South, while MEAC members are spread farther north along the East Coast.

Many assume FAMU’s closest rival is Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach. But Montgomery, Alabama, home to Alabama State, is actually 43 miles closer. The shorter trip makes it easy for fans of both schools to travel without the expense of overnight stays. What once were occasional non-conference matchups have now become meaningful showdowns in the SWAC’s Eastern Division. The two schools battled regularly back in the day when both teams were members of the SIAC.

That’s why Alabama State’s emphatic 42–14 victory over the Rattlers was more than just another win. For head coach Eddie Robinson, Jr., it was a milestone.

“We haven’t beat them since they’ve been in the SWAC,” Robinson said to HBCU Gameday after the game. “It’s been some decades, so it was good. The guys worked hard, they deserved it. It was a big win for us. Like I was telling you before, it’s a rivalry, but it’s not a rivalry until Alabama State wins a couple. So now I think we have a rivalry.”

Alabama State fans packed into Bragg Stadium for the SWAC showdown

Crowds and Culture Fuel the Rivalry

Since FAMU entered the SWAC, attendance at these games has been outstanding. Last year, when the Hornets hosted the Rattlers for homecoming, the matchup drew a record-setting 33,576 fans—the largest crowd in ASU Stadium history. The proximity not only boosts attendance, but also allows both schools’ famed marching bands to travel easily. In an era of tight budgets for HBCU bands, the short road trips help keep the pageantry alive.

Despite the teams being on opposite ends of the standings—Alabama State rising to the top of the conference while FAMU struggles near the bottom—the rivalry remains strong and deeply rooted in history.

Robinson is already anticipating the next installment.

“They’ll be coming back to us next year and we’ll do it all over again,” he said with a smile.

Eyes on the SWAC Race

Beyond the rivalry, Alabama State’s focus is squarely on finishing the season strong. The Hornets currently share the top spot in the SWAC with Jackson State, who rolled past Southern University in Baton Rouge, 38–13. Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman shocked the league with a 41–34 upset of Alabama A&M in Daytona Beach, creating a three-way tie atop the Eastern Division.

Robinson knows the grind isn’t letting up. “We’ve got to stay healthy,” he said. “I think every week you look at the teams in the conference, man, we play Bethune-Cookman, they’re coming to us next week for our homecoming, so we’ll have a lot of distractions going on. We’ve got to get reset and refocus every week. I think every team in the conference can beat you. It’s a great time to be in the SWAC, great time to coach. I’m just so proud to have this opportunity, but we know, for us, we have to get over this one and get back to work.”

The HBCU community is reacting to a halftime controversy from Saturday’s football game between Alabama State University and FAMU. Inside Bragg Memorial Stadium, Alabama State’s Honey Beez — the well-known plus-sized dance team that performs with the Mighty Marching Hornets — became the target of an offensive remark.

As the Honey Beez left the field after their performance, Florida A&M band announcer Joe Bullard called them “the new face of Ozempic.” The crowd reacted with shock and disgust. Soon after, the incident spread on social media and quickly ignited outrage across the HBCU landscape.

Alabama State President Quinton T. Ross Condemns Remarks

Alabama State University President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. issued a forceful statement. He described the announcer’s words as “short-sighted” and “demeaning.” Ross stressed that competition cannot come at the expense of student dignity.

“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” Ross wrote. He also spoke directly with FAMU’s president and with the Southwestern Athletic Conference commissioner. Both leaders agreed with his position.

Ross praised the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets for their dedication. He explained that they spend countless hours preparing “unforgettable” and “show-stopping” shows that display Alabama State pride. Speaking directly to the Honey Beez, Ross added: “Please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU.”

FAMU President Marva Johnson Issues Apology

Shortly after Ross’s statement, Florida A&M University President Marva Johnson released her own response. She apologized to Alabama State, the HoneyBeez, and the entire Hornet Nation.

Johnson called the remark “inappropriate and offensive.” She stressed that it does not represent FAMU’s values or its respect for other HBCUs. “On behalf of Florida A&M University, I extend my deepest and sincerest apologies to the Honey Beez, the Mighty Marching Hornets, President Quinton Ross, and the entire Alabama State University community,” she wrote.

Johnson also praised the Honey Beez, calling them a team that “represents discipline, school pride, and performance tradition respected across the nation.” She confirmed that she had spoken with Ross to share her regret. In addition, she pledged that Florida A&M will take “immediate steps to ensure accountability within our organization and to prevent incidents like this in the future.”

A Teachable Moment in HBCU Rivalry

This controversy highlights the tension that comes with historic HBCU rivalries. Alabama State and FAMU are two of the most celebrated programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Their matchups bring fierce competition on the field and high-profile battles at halftime.

However, as both presidents stressed, artistry deserves respect. The Honey Beez in particular stand as a symbol of inclusion and body positivity. They have performed on national stages and inspired audiences through creativity and confidence. Their presence shows the diversity of Black excellence that HBCUs are known to uplift.

Meanwhile, FAMU’s Marching 100 remains one of the most iconic bands in the HBCU tradition. Johnson’s statement reinforced that excellence must always come with integrity.

Moving Forward

By responding quickly, both Ross and Johnson set a tone of accountability and respect. Ross defended his students’ dignity and brilliance. Johnson admitted fault on behalf of her institution and pledged corrective action.

Together, their leadership turned a painful moment into a teachable one. HBCU rivalries may be fierce, but dignity and respect must guide every competition. The Honey Beez will continue to shine, and the HBCU community will watch closely to ensure moments like this do not repeat.

Jackson State delivered a second-half surge to turn a tight battle into a decisive 38-13 win over Southern University, keeping its grip on one of the most storied rivalries in HBCU football. The Tigers trailed midway through the second quarter but used explosive plays and relentless defense to seize control in Baton Rouge.

Southern University looked poised to flip the script early. After trading field goals, running back Trey Holly broke loose for a 73-yard touchdown run to give the Jaguars a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. The home crowd of 27,487 roared as the Jags briefly sensed momentum swinging their way. But Jackson State responded in kind. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan engineered a 97-yard drive capped by a 51-yard strike to Ja’Naylon Dupree just before halftime, giving the Tigers a 17-13 edge. They never looked back.

The second half belonged entirely to Jackson State. Running back Donerio Davenport muscled in a pair of short touchdown runs, while Travis Terrell Jr. added another score on the ground. The knockout punch came with 4:09 left, when Morgan hit Nate Rembert for an 82-yard touchdown, silencing the Southern University faithful and cementing the victory.

Jackson State,

Jackson State firing on all cylinders

Morgan was efficient and dynamic, finishing 21-of-32 for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Rembert (102 yards, one score) and Dupree (93 yards, one score) provided big-play threats downfield. Ahmad Miller set the tone on the ground with 101 rushing yards as Jackson State piled up 534 yards of total offense compared to Southern’s 300.

Defensively, Jackson State was equally dominant after halftime, holding Southern scoreless over the final 35 minutes. Kam Sallis intercepted Ashton Strother in the red zone, and Quincy Ivory added a sack to help seal the Jaguars’ fate. Southern’s offense managed just 120 passing yards, despite Holly’s 147 yards on the ground.

The win extends Jackson State’s streak to seven straight in the series and underscores why the Tigers remain a standard-bearer in HBCU football. For Southern University, turnovers and missed opportunities once again proved costly, dropping the Jaguars to 1-4 on the season.

Jackson State improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in SWAC play, firmly establishing itself as a contender heading into October. In a rivalry built on history and pride, the Tigers once again found a way to rise when it mattered most.

Alabama State opened its SWAC slate with authority on Saturday. The Hornets steamrolled Florida A&M University (FAMU) 42–14 on the road. They leaned on a relentless run game, efficient passing, and a disciplined defense to earn their first win at FAMU in four years. The message was clear: Alabama State is ready to compete at the top of HBCU football.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

“This is big,” Alabama State’s head coach said postgame. “For us, we want to make this somewhat of a rivalry. But it’s not a rivalry when we keep losing. They’ve been around Tallahassee riding on our bicycle. So we finally came back to take it back.”

Ground Game Sets the Tone

Alabama State controlled the trenches from the start. The Hornets piled up 299 rushing yards on 42 carries, averaging an eye-popping 7.1 yards per attempt. Jamarie Hostzclaw carried the ball 22 times for 135 yards. Jahbari Kuykendall, Marcus Harris II, and JR Gardner combined for four rushing touchdowns.

The Hornets scored in every quarter. Their biggest surge came after halftime, when they stacked back-to-back 14-point frames in the third and fourth. Quarterback Andrew Body complemented the ground attack with 10 completions on 18 attempts for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Jalen Jones hauled in both of those scores.

Rattlers Struggle to Respond

Florida A&M fell behind early and never recovered. Quarterback RJ Johnson III completed 20 of 33 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. However, his offense struggled to move the chains against a swarming Alabama State defense. Running back Thad Franklin Jr. provided one bright spot with 75 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Even with Franklin’s effort, the Rattlers could not sustain momentum. They finished with 309 total yards on 63 plays — only 4.9 yards per snap. On third down, FAMU converted just five of twelve attempts.

Alabama State’s Defense Clamps Down

The Hornets’ defense matched their offense’s intensity. Alabama State stopped FAMU on four of five fourth-down tries and limited explosive plays. Linebackers Jalil Lenore, Cameron Gordon, and Rhoody Jean-Louis each recorded five tackles. Their pressure forced the Rattlers to play a short passing game, which further stifled the offense.

A Rivalry Reignited

The win snapped Alabama State’s drought in Tallahassee and reignited an HBCU matchup that many around the SWAC want to see become a true rivalry.

“It’s great to get one win. We wanted to go 1-0 in SWAC play,” the coach added. “We’ve got homecoming next week. Got to lock back in. We’re not focused on the big picture. We know we have to take it week by week.”

Alabama State didn’t just snap a losing streak in Tallahassee — it set the tone for the rest of the season. The Hornets showed power in the run game, discipline on defense, and a hunger that could keep them in the mix for the SWAC title. In the broader HBCU football picture, this was a statement win.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida A&M University (FAMU) athletics director Angela Suggs may avoid trial in her ongoing grand theft and fraud case after reaching an agreement with prosecutors.

Suggs, 55, was arrested in June following a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation that accused her of misusing a credit card from her former employer, the Florida Sports Foundation. Investigators allege she racked up nearly $24,000 in improper charges, some of which were repaid late or never reimbursed.

According to court records filed Thursday, the State Attorney’s Office approved a deferred prosecution agreement, enrolling Suggs in a pretrial intervention program. If she complies with the program’s conditions for two years, all charges will be dismissed.

Angela Suggs

The terms include mandatory gambling addiction courses and regular participation in treatment or support groups. Suggs is also barred from holding any position where she has access to employer funds or credit lines for personal benefit. Whether that restriction applies to her current role at FAMU remains unclear.

In addition, Suggs must pay $649.98 in restitution to the Florida Sports Foundation. Court documents note that while she did repay certain charges, others — including expenses marked as business meals that were later deemed personal — went unpaid. FDLE also reported that Suggs often claimed receipts were missing.

FAMU, one of the nation’s most prominent HBCUs, has not yet issued a statement on how the agreement may affect Suggs’ role overseeing athletics. The outcome of this case carries significant implications for FAMU as it continues to elevate its national athletic profile while navigating leadership questions at the top of its sports program.

The legendary group TLC will headline the State Fair Classic, Texas’ biggest HBCU football matchup. For anyone who grew up around HBCU culture, the Classic is more than a game — it’s a weekend-long gathering of alumni, students, and families. Adding TLC to the 2025 lineup connects generations, pairing one of the most iconic groups in music with one of the most iconic events in HBCU football.

TLC’s sound has always lived in HBCU spaces

TLC helped define the soundtrack for the 1990s with hits like Waterfalls, Creep, and No Scrubs. They sold more than 65 million records worldwide, and their music still gets heavy rotation at cookouts, tailgates, and homecomings across the HBCU community. Their presence at the State Fair Classic makes sense — they’re a group that resonates with parents, alumni, and current students alike.

State Fair Classic: Grambling vs. Prairie View is bigger than football

The State Fair Classic brings Grambling State and Prairie View A&M to Dallas each fall. If you’ve ever been, you know the matchup isn’t just about the teams on the field. The halftime battle of the bands, the tailgates outside the Cotton Bowl, and the sea of school colors are just as important as the scoreboard. For many alumni, it’s a homecoming away from home, and for students, it’s a chance to stand in the middle of tradition.

Why adding TLC raises the stakes for 2025

For the HBCU community, events like the State Fair Classic carry weight beyond the game itself. They’re about connection, culture, and visibility. By headlining, TLC gives the C;assic some added national attention while still fitting naturally into the traditions that make HBCU football special. This year’s Classic isn’t just another matchup — it’s a reminder of how music and HBCU culture move together and continue to define the experience.
