When Nike unveiled the Yardrunners 6.0 Air Max ’95 collection, the sneakers immediately turned heads. But the real power of this campaign isn’t just in the design. It’s in the people. This year’s chapter in the Yardrunners story continues a full-circle tradition of HBCU alumni using their platforms to spotlight the next generation of trailblazers, creators, and leaders from their own community.

Alumni Building Alumni

The Yardrunners program began with a simple yet radical idea from two Howard University graduates, Richard Palmer and Arinze Emeagwali. They met on campus and bonded over their love of sneakers long before joining the Swoosh.

Years later, after each had built careers in marketing — Palmer with Jordan Brand and later Nike HQ, Emeagwali with Nike NYC — they reconnected to reshape how Nike engaged HBCUs.

In 2020, they pitched a concept that reimagined Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” message as “You Can’t Stop HBCUs.” Their goal was clear: to honor the people who make HBCUs thrive through authentic storytelling and design. From that idea came Yardrunners, a campaign that now serves as Nike’s bridge to the HBCU community.

Culture Carried Forward

That founding vision still guides the work today. Two HBCU alumni now lead the Yardrunners initiative within Nike. They collaborate with Black-led creative agencies such as League Twenty Two to ensure each release reflects the community’s authentic voice.

The imagery, language, and style now stretch far beyond product drops. Nike’s social channels, billboards, and editorial platforms feature real HBCU faces and stories. According to VIBE.com, the campaign’s purpose remains consistent — to elevate HBCU students and alumni through storytelling, products, and genuine collaboration.

HBCUs as the Heartbeat

This year’s Air Max ’95 Yardrunners 6.0 campaign spotlights four iconic institutions — Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University — and the people who represent their legacy.

At Florida A&M, Yardrunners captures the energy of Rattler Nation. Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching “100,” continues the school’s musical tradition.

At Spelman College, the Air Max 95 silhouette mirrors the grace and strength that define one of America’s most storied women’s colleges.

The campaign highlights Dr. Joyce Finch Johnson, Professor Emerita of Music and College Organist since 1955, whose presence has shaped the Spelman soundtrack for generations.

Eboni Ellis, founder of the Women in Hip Hop Collective, channels Spelman’s legacy of creative leadership, while Olivia Brown, flag-football captain, and Kamora Freeland, one of the youngest African American female pilots in U.S. history — and New York’s youngest licensed Black female pilot at 17 — represent how Spelman continues to open doors for the next generation of changemakers.

For Morehouse College, the maroon-and-black design represents strength, scholarship, and continuity.

Legacy as a Loop

Each of these individuals carries forward what Yardrunners represents — HBCU excellence in motion. And each new campaign expands that circle.

From 2021’s HBCU dance showcase featuring Texas Southern alum Megan Thee Stallion, to 2023’s Morehouse Nike Terminator collaboration with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, to 2024’s “Started on the Yard” campaign narrated by Stephen A. Smith, Yardrunners has centered alumni who lift others as they climb.

That lineage continues with Yardrunners 6.0, which joins Nike’s growing collection of HBCU-driven releases. “When current students look back, they’ll be able to say Yardrunners was part of their HBCU experience,” said Palmer. “That means the world to us.”

Culture by the Culture

Yardrunners 6.0 isn’t a typical marketing campaign. It’s an ecosystem of alumni using creative power to spotlight others walking the same halls they once did.

From Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton to the brick yards of HBCU campuses, it shows that authenticity isn’t a trend — it’s the foundation of legacy.

Available October 11 at select retailers and on the SNKRS app October 14, Yardrunners 6.0 is more than a product drop. It’s a story of HBCU pride told by the people who live it.

Nike is once again shining a spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its latest Yardrunners project. This time, the Swoosh pulls up with a bold collection of Air Max ’95s dedicated to four iconic HBCU institutions.

A Yardrunners Tradition Expands

Since 2020, Nike has shown love to HBCUs through the Yardrunners program, which was created to celebrate the legacies of HBCU institutions and the people they serve with footwear designed by alumni. On its fifth anniversary, the program is marking the occasion with what sneakernews.com calls its “most ambitious release yet:” a full lineup of four Air Max ’95s, each paying tribute to a different HBCU.

For Holiday 2025, the Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack highlights Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida A&M University, and Norfolk State University. Each design pulls from school history, color palettes, and mascots—turning sneakers into wearable symbols of HBCU pride.

Earlier HBCU Releases by Nike

This new drop follows several high-profile collaborations. For example, Clark Atlanta University received its own Nike Dunk colorway in 2022. Howard University later showcased a Jordan Brand Air Jordan 4 Player Exclusive, complete with custom “HU” lace dubraes and school crest.

In addition, the Yardrunners 3.0 collection featured Dunk colorways and apparel timed with HBCU homecomings. The Terminator High HBCU Pack arrived in 2023, while Virginia Union University debuted an Air Force 1 release in 2024.

Details Behind the Drop

Morehouse pairs tiger-inspired red and black stripes with bold accents.
FAMU takes on green reptilian textures, a clear nod to the Rattler.
Spelman celebrates the jaguar with spotted dark and light blue suede.
Norfolk State opts for understated yellow hairy suede, representing Mr. Spartan.

Every sneaker comes dressed with school letter logos and founding years on the tongues, custom insoles with full school names, and even graphic treatments on the visible Air cushioning that mirror each pair’s overlay patterns—with Norfolk State being the lone exception. These extra design elements push the drop into collectors’ territory, blending heritage with modern sneaker aesthetics.

When and Where to Cop

The Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack will be available during the Holiday 2025 season through Nike.com and select retailers. The retail price will be $190 per pair.

When Usher steps onto a stage, he owns the room. This past weekend, the R&B superstar proved that same magnetic presence translates seamlessly to the golf course. At the PGA Tour Championship, the Atlanta-raised icon turned heads in the Polo Ralph Lauren x Morehouse College collection—a fashion statement that merged Ivy League polish with unapologetic HBCU pride.

Usher in Morehouse Mode

Draped in a maroon and white Morehouse jacket, crisp white tee, and a matching cap, Usher looked like he was born to disrupt the buttoned-up aesthetic of professional golf. The fit came from the Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs collection, a collaboration deeply rooted in HBCU tradition and storytelling. Morehouse alumnus James M. Jeter curated the collection, ensuring every thread carried the weight of legacy.

The look wasn’t just about sharp tailoring—it was about signaling that HBCU culture belongs on every stage, from the halftime show to the fairway. Usher’s appearance comes months after his show-stopping Super Bowl performance, where he pulled the Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South into the spotlight. If there’s one thing about Usher, it’s that he never forgets where he came from and is intentional about where he shines the light next.

More Than Just Fashion

This Polo Ralph Lauren partnership represents more than apparel—it’s a cultural statement. The Oak Bluffs capsule tapped Morehouse and Spelman graduates as designers, storytellers, and muses, tying together Ralph Lauren’s preppy aesthetic with the enduring traditions of Black excellence. When Usher zipped up that jacket, he wasn’t just styling; he was repping an institution that shaped generations of leaders and creatives.

Even the setting—a PGA Tour Championship—added weight. Golf, a sport long steeped in exclusivity, suddenly looked different with Usher and fellow star Rick Ross, an Albany State alumnus, bringing HBCU energy to the greens. In an Instagram video, the duo laughed, posed, and made the fairway feel more like an upscale Atlanta block party than Augusta National’s shadow.

Why It Matters

For HBCUs, visibility is currency. A global icon like Usher sliding into the Polo Ralph Lauren x Morehouse collection at a marquee PGA event is more than celebrity style—it’s amplification. It’s a reminder that HBCUs aren’t just fueling the culture; they are the culture.

And for fans, it’s inspiration. Whether you’re a Morehouse student pulling all-nighters in Graves Hall or an alum who still hums the alma mater, seeing one of the world’s biggest stars in your school’s colors validates the grind.

The Takeaway

Usher didn’t just attend the PGA Tour Championship—he remixed it. He turned the golf course into a runway, gave the cameras a cultural moment, and once again put HBCUs at the center of the conversation. It was preppy. It was polished. And above all, it was proudly HBCU.

More than 100 Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have long played a vital role in shaping the U.S. educational and cultural landscape. From cultivating generations of leaders to fueling industries with talented professionals, every HBCU remains central to the nation’s story. And today, enrollment numbers at HBCUs are rebounding faster from pandemic lows than at other higher education institutions LinkedIn report.

But which HBCUs best prepare students for long-term career success? That’s the question LinkedIn set out to answer with its 2025 Top Colleges list, which ranks institutions based on the career outcomes of alumni.

How the Rankings Were Determined

LinkedIn’s methodology focuses on real-world alumni outcomes. The platform evaluated its massive Economic Graph, tracking how graduates fare after leaving campus. Key factors included:

  • Employment success: How quickly graduates land full-time roles.
  • Career progression: How often alumni advance into senior or leadership positions.
  • Long-term outcomes: Patterns of sustained career growth across industries.

This approach shifts the conversation from prestige or admissions selectivity to what matters most—whether students thrive professionally after graduation.

The Atlanta Falcons aren’t just chasing wins on Sundays — they’re making game-changing plays in their own backyard, too. Just ahead of the 2025 season, the Falcons teamed up with the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation to deliver brand-new, state-of-the-art football helmets to two of Atlanta’s iconic HBCU football programs: Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University.

It’s more than a gear upgrade. It’s a statement about the value of HBCU athletes and their safety on the field.

NFL-HBCU Partnership

“We are proud to support the football programs at these historical institutions through this grant,” said Chris Millman, AMB Sports and Entertainment Senior Vice President of Community Engagement and Sports Philanthropy. “Player health and safety is paramount for athletes at all levels of football.”

Millman highlighted that helmet technology has made huge strides in the last five years. A fact that hasn’t always translated into equitable access across all collegiate programs. This partnership aims to level the playing field.

The impact is massive for HBCU programs like Morehouse and Clark Atlanta, both rich in history but often operating with limited resources.

“Morehouse Athletics is grateful for this opportunity,” said Harold Ellis, Director of Athletics at Morehouse College. “The new football helmets will elevate player health and safety and provide our Maroon Tigers with the highest level of protection as they compete in the 2025 football season.”

Across town, Clark Atlanta head coach Teddy Keaton sees the helmets as part of a much bigger win.

More than Equipment

“This is more than just new equipment; it’s an investment in the future and safety of our student-athletes,” Keaton said. “These helmets represent progress, purpose, and the power of partnership.”

For the Blank Foundation — launched by Home Depot co-founder and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank — this move aligns with a broader youth development, equity, and community support mission. Since its founding in 1995, the organization has granted over $1.5 billion to causes ranging from mental health and environmental advocacy to veterans support and educational equity.

But for the young men suiting up for Morehouse College and Clark Atlanta University, the message is clear: you matter, and your safety matters.

These new helmets are more than just equipment in a sport where the hits are hard and the margins are thin. They’re a show of belief in HBCU athletes and the futures they’re building both on and off the field.

Polo Ralph Lauren is back with a new HBCU collaboration as the fall fashion season approaches. The company has launched a new limited-edition capsule collection called Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs. This release honors Black heritage and the historic Oak Bluffs community in Martha’s Vineyard. Known for its deep roots as a cultural haven for Black Americans, Oak Bluffs provides the perfect backdrop for this storytelling-driven fashion drop.

The collection extends Ralph Lauren’s partnership with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, two iconic HBCU institutions. It features apparel and accessories that reflect timeless collegiate style and highlight the proud traditions of HBCU excellence.

Oak Bluffs: A Symbol of the Black American Dream

Oak Bluffs, located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, has served as a summer destination for Black families for over a century. In the early 20th century, middle-class Black families began vacationing there to escape racial segregation. Over time, writers, poets, and artists like Langston Hughes and Dorothy West turned Oak Bluffs into a creative retreat.

Ralph Lauren said, “This collection is about more than just a charming coastal town. It’s a story of the American dream. Oak Bluffs’ unique history, traditions, and sense of community deeply inspire me and speak to what we are all searching for – a place where you can be free, uncontrived, joyful, and truly at home.”

HBCU Alumni Bring the Vision to Life

Morehouse and Spelman alumni working at Ralph Lauren conceptualized and designed the Oak Bluffs capsule. Their involvement ensures cultural authenticity in every piece.

The campaign includes creative contributions from author and filmmaker Cole Brown. Photographer Nadine Ijewere captured the visuals, and Azariah Bjørvig filmed the collection’s video. Their work reflects the collection’s message of joy, identity, and legacy.

David Lauren, Chief Branding and Innovation Officer at Ralph Lauren, explained, “Telling stories about American life and style has been at the heart of Ralph Lauren for nearly 60 years. Over the past several years, we have made a dedicated effort to expand the aperture around the stories that we share. We found a deep connection between our company and their institutions – a love for shared connection and community, a commitment to excellence, and a belief in honoring timeless traditions.”

A New Chapter: Fashion and Film Come Together

Alongside the fashion release, Ralph Lauren will debut a full-length documentary titled A Portrait of the American Dream: Oak Bluffs. The film premieres on YouTube on Thursday, July 24, 2025, the same day as the collection launch.

The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival will host a special screening and panel discussion on August 8, 2025. The event will focus on narrative as a tool for racial healing and cultural preservation.

Where to Buy the Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs Collection

Shoppers can find the collection on the Ralph Lauren website, through the Ralph Lauren App, and in select Ralph Lauren retail stores. Morehouse College and Spelman College Follett campus bookstores will also carry the line, while supplies last.

Labor Day Weekend 2025 won’t just mark the return of college football. It’ll signal the birth of something historic. For the first time ever, an HBCU football classic will be held in Boston. And not just anywhere in the city. Inside Harvard Stadium, the oldest college football stadium in the country. The inaugural ESSENCE Kickoff Classic will feature Morehouse College facing off against Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), delivering a powerful season opener and a cultural homecoming on Ivy League turf.

A Classic Reimagined

This year’s event is a bold elevation from last fall’s Morehouse vs. JCSU showdown. The game was featured in season two of HBCU Gameday’s Brick x Brick docuseries. That episode gave fans a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at two historic programs giving their all for an early-season win.

But in 2025, it’s getting bigger. Brick x Brick will return with a special episode dedicated to the Kickoff Classic. The episode hopes to go behind the scenes to show what happens when an HBCU game moves from the South to the Ivy League.

A City of Firsts—Now, a First for HBCUs

“The ESSENCE Kickoff Classic is more than a game—a cultural statement,” said Michele Ghee, Chief Content Officer of ESSENCE Ventures. “By bringing HBCU football to Boston for the first time. We’re not only honoring the rich legacy of our institutions. We’re creating space for Black excellence to thrive in new places.”

Boston, long seen as a hub for higher education and equity-driven innovation, is embracing its role as host city with open arms.

“We are proud to bring the spirit of HBCUs to Harvard Stadium and look forward to welcoming visitors from across the country,” said Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, highlighting the city’s commitment to inclusion and cultural celebration.

HBCU Essence Boston Harvard
A New Kind of Tailgate

The Classic is more than 60 minutes of football—it’s an all-out weekend experience. Expect a citywide celebration packed with music, community activations, career fairs, step shows, and—of course—the unmatched energy of HBCU marching bands.

Event Co-Founder Derrick Brown summed it up best. “The Classic isn’t just a game — it’s a citywide celebration of culture, community, and Boston’s bold commitment to inclusivity.”

From the tailgate to the halftime show, this event is meant to fuse the legacy of HBCUs with Boston’s future-forward thinking, making it both a tribute and a trailblazer.

Powered by Essence, Backed by Boston

ESSENCE, the iconic platform dedicated to Black women and communities. Searheads an event supported by MeetBoston, the city’s tourism hub, and Campus Rise, a mission-driven platform helping underrepresented students thrive.

This partnership ensures that the Classic won’t just be seen—it will be felt.

Harvard Stadium has seen its share of historic football moments over the decades. But this will be the first time its end zones ring out with the sound of a drumline, the stomp of a step team, and the roar of fans proudly reppin’ their HBCUs.

On July 3, CAMP HBCYouth, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, made a lasting impact by hosting its annual “Field Day” at Morehouse College. Sponsored by the AJ Terrell Foundation in partnership with Amazon Access, the event brought together campers for a day of fun, learning, and community building. The day featured Atlanta Falcons star AJ Terrell, who spent time on the field with the kids, leading games and sharing words of encouragement. His presence energized the campers, who enjoyed a full schedule of outdoor activities designed to inspire teamwork, confidence, and leadership.

A Summer Camp with Purpose

Founded by Atlanta entrepreneurs Brian “BWrightous” Wright and Reagan Fresnel, CAMP HBCYouth provides an educational summer day camp rooted in the rich principles and cultural legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The camp delivers a unique blend of academic enrichment, leadership development, group projects, arts & crafts, physical fitness, and music, along with a summer food program that supports campers and their families.

This year’s camp also included contributions from several HBCUs, offering the students authentic exposure to higher education environments. Participating universities included:

  • Clark Atlanta University
  • Spelman College
  • Morehouse College
  • Tennessee State University

These partnerships gave campers a direct connection to the vibrant traditions and academic pathways that HBCUs provide.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

Building on the success of last year’s collaboration, the 2025 camp season continued to offer valuable access to Amazon Access programs. Families were able to explore resources such as:

  • SNAP EBT payment options on Amazon
  • Exclusive Access Discounts

The HBCU community is mourning the loss of a legend. Morehouse College has announced the passing of Thomas Wells, affectionately known as T.J., a longtime assistant coach and proud alumnus. Wells was a key figure in the success of Morehouse’s track and field and cross-country programs for nearly 40 years.

Coach Wells graduated from Morehouse in 1974. He was a two-sport athlete who played football and ran track. In 1987, he returned to campus as a coach. His energy, passion, and leadership helped shape generations of Maroon Tigers.

A Championship Legacy in HBCU Athletics

Coach Wells worked closely with Head Coach Willie Hill to build one of the most dominant programs in HBCU history. Together, they led Morehouse to 38 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championships. These titles spanned cross-country, indoor track, and outdoor track and field.

Wells’ most recent achievement came in February 2025. The Maroon Tigers won the first-ever SIAC Indoor Track & Field Championship. That victory followed the 2024 SIAC Cross Country title. Under his leadership, Morehouse produced numerous All-SIAC athletes, NCAA qualifiers, and student leaders.

A Mentor and True Morehouse Man

“T.J. Wells was more than a coach—he was a cornerstone of our program,” said Athletic Director Harold Ellis. “He shared a vision for excellence that went beyond medals and trophies.”

Coach Willie Hill added, “Anybody can live. No one can live giving like Coach Wells. He was a true giver of life.”

Wells mentored young men with discipline, love, and purpose. His impact reached beyond athletics. He built a culture rooted in integrity, teamwork, and service. That culture still defines Morehouse athletics today.

A Life Dedicated to Service

In addition to coaching, Wells served his community. From 1973 to 1998, he worked as a Center Director for the City of Atlanta Department of Parks and Recreation. He also volunteered with Scouting America, mentoring youth across Atlanta.

Coach Wells lived with humility, dedication, and a belief in the power of education and sport. His commitment to Morehouse and the HBCU tradition was unmatched.

An Enduring Legacy in the HBCU World

Wells gave 38 years to Morehouse. In that time, he touched thousands of lives. His players remember him not just for wins, but for wisdom and heart.

Morehouse College will announce memorial details in the coming days. The community extends its deepest condolences to the Wells family, former athletes, and all who knew him.

Thomas Wells was a leader, a mentor, and a proud Morehouse Man. His legacy will live on through every athlete he inspired—and through every HBCU program that strives for excellence.

Allen University has named Douglas Whittler as the new head men’s basketball coach for the Yellow Jackets, bringing on board a proven leader and championship-winning coach, formerly of Morehouse College.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Coach Whittler,” said Athletic Director Phillip Wallace Jr. “I’ve known him for years. His leadership and coaching are top notch. I have no doubt he will lead us to a championship.”

Coaching Success at Morehouse

Whittler comes to Allen after four years as head coach at Morehouse College. He posted a 76-40 overall record with a 65.5% win rate. In conference play, he went 59-21, good for a 73.4% win rate. He holds the record for the most wins by a Morehouse coach in their first four seasons. His conference win percentage is the second highest in program history.

His teams were dominant. From 2022 to 2024, Morehouse won three straight SIAC East Division titles. In 2024–25, the team finished second in the division. Player Brandon Peters made the SIAC All-Freshman Team. Cedric Taylor III earned First Team honors and won the Elite 16 academic award.

In 2025, Whittler was one of four coaches selected to lead the HBCU All-Star Game.

A New Chapter at Allen

“I want to thank President McNealey and Director Wallace for this chance,” said Whittler. “My family and I are honored to join the Allen University community. I’m excited to build something special here. We will compete for championships in the SIAC and on a national level.”

President Ernest McNealey also praised the hire.

“I congratulate AD Wallace for selecting Coach Whittler,” McNealey said. “We’re looking forward to a competitive season.”

Deep Coaching Roots

Whittler began coaching at Morehouse in 2009. He served as an assistant coach for six years. In 2015, he became associate head coach. He held that role until 2021. That year, he stepped in as interim head coach after the death of Coach Grady Brewer.

As an assistant, Whittler helped develop eight all-conference players. He also coached three newcomers of the year, two SIAC Players of the Year, and three All-Americans.

Whittler played at Morehouse, earning first-team All-Conference honors. He holds a degree in kinesiology, sports studies and physical education.

He and his wife, Kimberly, have two sons, Sir and Remy, and a daughter, Savannah.

Several are in position to reach the podium.

The 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 22–24 at CSU Pueblo’s ThunderBowl in Colorado, will feature a record-setting presence of HBCU athletes. Many enter with top-10 seedings, bringing both momentum and expectations.

Why it matters: More high-ranking qualifiers from HBCUs signals increasing parity and investment in Black college track and field programs.

Top HBCU Sprinters Are Among the Nation’s Best

Freshman Tyson Williams from Johnson C. Smith headlines the men’s sprints, seeded 2nd nationally in the 200m (20.17) and tied for 12th in the 100m (10.21). At Lincoln University (Mo.), veteran Reuben Nichols brings strength in the 200m (22nd, 20.80) and 400m (13th, 46.46).

On the women’s side, Shantae George of Lincoln (Mo.) ranks 6th in the 200m (23.27) and 16th in the 100m (11.43), anchoring both of the school’s nationally ranked relays.

Why it matters: Top seedings from Williams and George could translate into national titles and team points.

HBCU Relay Squads Carry Podium Potential

Lincoln (Mo.) brings depth and speed in relays. The men’s 4x400m team is ranked 2nd (3:06.23), and the women’s 4x400m squad shares the same ranking (3:37.88). The 4x100m relay team is ranked 3rd (45.12), reinforcing Lincoln’s strength in team events.

Why it matters: These relays are built not just for qualifying—but for winning.

SIAC schools have built sprinting powerhouses

Kibren Moore of Albany State is competing in the 100m (15th, 10.25), 200m (7th, 20.51), and the 4x100m relay. Darrian Clarke of Benedict College is seeded 20th in the 200m (20.77), and his team’s 4x100m relay is ranked 6th nationally at 40.18.

Albany State’s Cadence Cray will also race in the 200m (17th, 23.43), while teammate Nathalia Rowe holds the 6th seed in the women’s 400m hurdles (58.83).

Why it matters: These programs are turning conference dominance into national relevance.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU
Mohamed Adoni (right) will look to compete for the national title in the 110m, and 400m hurdles.

Hurdlers Prove HBCUs Can Coach the Details

In technical events like the hurdles, HBCUs have strong representation:

  • Mohamed Adoini (Johnson C. Smith): 110m hurdles (9th), 400m hurdles (10th)
  • Jaevon Riley (Claflin): 400m hurdles (10th)
  • Sharim Hamilton (Lincoln – Mo.): 400m hurdles (13th)
  • Clinton Laguerre (Lincoln – Mo.): 400m hurdles (17th)
  • Jermiah Alibey (Morehouse): 400m hurdles (18th)
  • Shawn Jarrett II (Tuskegee): Also among the top qualifiers
  • Odeshia Nanton (Lincoln – Mo.): Women’s 400m hurdles (11th)

Why it matters: Success in hurdles reflects disciplined coaching and well-rounded athletic development.

Middle-Distance Runners Bring Versatility

In the men’s 400m, Samuel Vessat (Edward Waters) is seeded 8th (46.18), with Michael Simmons Jr. (Morehouse) at 13th (46.42). Zion Murry (Claflin) will compete in the 800m (18th, 1:49.25).

On the women’s side, Shevanae Thomas (Lincoln – Mo.) is 12th in the 400m (53.41), and Kamani Johns (Lincoln – Pa.) is 19th (53.89). Shaneal Clarke-Giddings (Lincoln – Mo.) holds the 13th seed in the 800m (2:07.52).

Why it matters: These athletes add balance to sprint-heavy squads, expanding HBCUs’ scoring potential.

Final Takeaway: HBCUs Are Poised to Make Noise

This year’s championship marks a turning point. HBCUs are sending more top-ranked athletes than ever before. With strong relay teams and individual medal contenders, these programs are no longer underdogs—they’re contenders.

Why it matters: Success at the national level opens doors to funding, recognition, and future recruiting advantages, helping HBCU programs continue to thrive.

ATLANTA, GA | Morehouse College has announced the hiring of Larry Dixon as the 14th head men’s basketball coach in program history. This milestone move marks a significant new chapter for the Maroon Tigers. Dixon, a veteran coach with ties to North Carolina State University, brings over two decades of experience at the collegiate level and becomes the first head coach outside the Arthur McAfee coaching tree to lead the HBCU program since 1965.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Dixon to the Morehouse family,” said Harold Ellis ’92, Director of Athletics at Morehouse College. “Larry is a championship coach, having coached on all collegiate levels, and he brings a wealth of experience, a proven commitment to student-athlete development, and a fresh perspective that aligns with our mission to achieve excellence both on and off the court.”

Dixon’s coaching pedigree includes stints as an assistant and associate head coach at multiple Division I programs, most recently serving on the coaching staff at North Carolina State. Other stops include the University of South Florida, Georgia Southern, Winthrop University, East Carolina University, South Carolina State, and St. Andrews College.

Known for his defensive acumen, strong recruiting ties throughout the Southeast, and a reputation for developing talent, Dixon has helped guide multiple programs to postseason success during his career. During his stops, Dixon has helped guide teams to three NCAA tournament berths (Final Four 2023-24, 2009-10, 2007-08), two CBI tournament berths (Championship 2018-19, 2016-17) three conference tournament championships (ACC 2023-24, Big South 2009-10, 2007-08), and two regular season championships (Big South 2007-08, MEAC 2003-04).

Larry Dixon – New Morehouse MBB head coach

His appointment marks a pivotal moment for the storied Morehouse basketball program. Since 1965, every Maroon Tigers head coach has either been Arthur McAfee, the legendary architect of the program, or a direct product of his coaching tree. Dixon’s hiring is the first major departure from that lineage in 60 years, signaling a new era while honoring the foundational legacy built over the past century.  Dixon becomes only the fifth person to coach Morehouse since the conclusion of World War II.

“I’m honored, humbled, and excited to join Morehouse College and lead one of the most historic and respected programs in HBCU basketball,” said Dixon. “This is a program with deep tradition and great potential. I’m excited to build on that legacy, connect with our alumni, and get to work with a group of young men who are striving for excellence.  I am thankful to AD Ellis and President (Dr. David) Thomas for giving me this opportunity.”

Dixon graduated from Johnson C. Smith University (Charlotte, N.C.) in 1996, where he was a four-year HBCU letterman. Following his junior season, he was named the team’s most improved player and the top defensive player after his senior season. As a sophomore, he helped the Golden Bulls to a pair of CIAA Southern Division titles and a championship game appearance.

Dixon will be officially introduced at a press conference on Monday, May 19, at 10 a.m. at Forbes Arena.

The Morehouse College Board of Trustees has named renowned public health leader and biostatistician Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, a 1992 graduate of Morehouse, as the College’s 13th president following a national search. Dr. Bowman will assume the role on July 15, 2025, succeeding President David A. Thomas, who concludes his tenure in June.

Dr. Bowman currently serves as dean of the University of Michigan School of Public Health and holds the Roderick J. Little Collegiate Professorship of Biostatistics. A nationally respected scholar, innovator, and academic leader, Bowman is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“Dr. Bowman’s record of visionary leadership, his deep commitment to academic excellence, and his lifelong dedication to Morehouse make him the ideal choice to lead the College into its next era,” said Willie Woods ’85, chairman of the Morehouse College Board of Trustees. “He brings an extraordinary blend of intellectual rigor, strategic thinking, and values-driven leadership.”

A leading expert in the statistical analysis of complex data sets, Dr. Bowman’s research has transformed understanding of neurological and mental health disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and schizophrenia. His work has shaped more personalized therapeutic approaches and has explored how environmental factors affect brain function in youth.

Leader in Public Health

At the University of Michigan, Dr. Bowman leads a top-ranked school of public health with more than 1,300 students and an annual sponsored research portfolio exceeding $100 million. He has launched interdisciplinary initiatives to address public health challenges, such as firearm injury prevention, health equity, and infectious disease control. His leadership has fostered a culture of inclusion, innovation, and service across the school.

A proud Morehouse alumnus, member of Phi Beta Kappa, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Bowman has remained closely connected to his alma mater as a two-time Morehouse parent and a dedicated mentor, facilitating a University of Michigan pipeline program for students from Morehouse and Spelman colleges. In 2019, he was awarded the College’s highest award for alumni – the Bennie Trailblazer Award –named after the sixth president of the College, Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays.

“Returning to Morehouse as its 13th president is the honor of a lifetime,” said Dr. Bowman. “This institution shaped who I am—instilling a commitment to excellence, justice, and impact. I am excited to partner with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters to build on our legacy and write the next chapter of Morehouse’s transformative story.”

Growing investment in Research at Morehouse

His appointment follows a historic milestone for the College, which was recently named both a Research College & University (RCU) and Opportunity College & University (OCU) in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications. The dual designation reflects Morehouse’s growing investment in research and its enduring mission to provide students from underrepresented communities with access to life-changing education and competitive post-graduate outcomes.

Prior to his deanship at Michigan, Dr. Bowman held academic and leadership positions at Columbia University and Emory University. He earned a Master of Science in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Bowman is married to Cynthia Bowman who holds degrees from Spelman College, Georgia Tech, and Northwestern. They have four children, including a son who graduated from Morehouse in 2024 and a younger son who is currently enrolled at the College.

Former Morehouse College star Cedric Taylor II will begin his next chapter of HBCU basketball at Howard University this fall, he recently announced on social media.

“From Foes to Family #TheDreamFactory?,” Taylor posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Taylor’s decision comes after the ex-Tigers’ guard entered the transfer portal on March 21, following a 2024-25 season where he led Morehouse in scoring (averaged 15.6 ppg).

“I have enjoyed my time at Morehouse and it will always be a special place for me,” Taylor previously wrote in a letter on X. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my extended family for their unwavering support and motivation, Coach Whittler for recruiting me directly from high school and all who assisted in my development on and off the court.”

DII Hoops Star

Taylor spent two seasons at Morehouse, totaling 765 points, 76 steals, 65 blocks, 116 assists, and 353 rebounds (261 of which were defensive), while shooting 42.7% from the floor across 56 games. After a promising freshman campaign, Taylor took his game to new heights as a sophomore.

In addition to serving as the Tigers’ leading scorer, Taylor led Morehouse in steals (47), blocks (37), and rebounds (202) while finishing second on the team in assists (89) through 30 games last season. He averaged double-figure point totals in 26 games as a sophomore, including an impressive performance against Howard University in a shocking HBCU hoops upset in January 2025. Taylor finished with 17 points on 6-of-13 shots, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in 40 minutes of action.

HBCU Howard University Morehouse College

Taylor played a key role in helping Morehouse College to an 18-14 overall record and a 14-7 mark in SIAC play. The Maroon Tigers secured the No. 2 seed in the SIAC East during the league’s conference tournament in March. However, Central State, the No. 3 seed in the SIAC West, eliminated Morehouse in the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament.

Taylor earned first-team All-SIAC recognition and received the Elite 16 award, the conference’s highest academic honor.

ATLANTA, GA | Ajani Williams, a senior kinesiology major at Morehouse College, recently had the opportunity to showcase his talents at the Atlanta Falcons Local Pro Day, held on Friday, April 11, at the team’s practice facility in Flowery Branch, Georgia. This annual event serves as a platform for NFL hopefuls from Georgia-based schools and local programs to perform in front of Falcons staff, scouts, and evaluators, with the potential to earn a spot in the NFL Draft or sign as an undrafted free agent.

Williams, a wide receiver from Fayetteville, Georgia, transferred to Morehouse from LaGrange College in Spring 2023 in search of new opportunities—both as a student and an athlete at a historically Black college.

He first learned of the opportunity three weeks prior to the Atlanta Falcons Pro Day, receiving a text from his agent on the Sunday night before Spring Break. “I just remember thanking God for receiving the opportunity I need to launch me further into my career,” Williams said. “I showed my family, who are extremely proud of me, and of course, Coach Terance Mathis, for being there for me along the way.”

Williams has been playing football since age five, always aspiring to compete at the collegiate level. Transferring to Morehouse was not an easy decision, but ultimately proved to be the right one. “I was hesitant to transfer at first because I thought about leaving my teammates and the life I had built at LaGrange,” he recalled. “But when I came to Morehouse, I knew I had made the right decision. I remember my first game—playing at the Hall of Fame Stadium—and it was a complete culture shock. The atmosphere, the brotherhood, and the support I received after that game made me think, ‘This is home.'”

Williams credits Morehouse with teaching him resilience and how to persevere through the challenges of being a student-athlete. “At the end of the day, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” he said. “It’s about learning how to handle yourself amidst hardship and keep going even when it feels impossible. That’s what the brotherhood is about.”

Inspired by NFL greats like Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald Jr., Williams has always been drawn to the wide receiver position. His journey has been fueled by discipline, humility, and a deep desire to represent HBCU athletes on a national stage. “Making it to Pro Day, I’m excited and grateful,” he said. “I want to show scouts that HBCUs have great players who deserve the same opportunities as those from larger schools.”

In preparation for the big day, Williams trained six days a week, working on speed and explosiveness with his high school track and strengthening coach while maintaining a clean diet. “I like the pressure that comes with it all,” he shared. “As long as I remain true to myself, I know I’ll be okay.”

Williams hopes scouts remember his strong work ethic and leave surprised by how he exceeds expectations.

“I want to give hope to those who feel like the underdog, who’ve gone through similar obstacles. I want to show them that the opportunity is there—and they can accomplish their goals, just like I hope to.”

Balancing football and academics, Williams prioritizes getting rest and staying on top of his coursework.

“I like to get ahead before I get behind,” he said. After college, he plans to attend graduate school with aspirations of becoming an athletic director or general manager, learning the inner workings of athletic administration.

Reflecting on his Atlanta Falcons Pro Day experience, Williams remains grateful. “Having Coach Mathis there meant a lot. My teammates have been a huge support system, and they’re a big reason why I continue pushing toward my goals. Inspiring them is what inspires me to keep striving.”

In a surprising move within the HBCU basketball landscape, Morehouse College has announced that head coach Doug Whittler and assistant coach Terrell Polk will be stepping down from their roles, effective immediately. The news was shared via an email to the campus community by Morehouse President Dr. David Thomas, who thanked both coaches for their service and impact on the program.

Whittler, a familiar name in HBCU basketball circles, made history during his four-year tenure at the helm of the Maroon Tigers. Named interim head coach in 2021 following the passing of the legendary Grady Brewer, Whittler quickly established himself as a force. He led the team to a 21-7 record and tied a school record with an 18-game winning streak in his first season—earning him the full-time job by March 2022.

Morehouse College won nearly three-fourths of its games under Doug Whittler.

Under his leadership, Morehouse College captured three consecutive SIAC East Division Regular Season titles from 2022 through 2024. Whittler developed standout talent, including Kerry Richardson, Cedric Taylor III—who earned both Freshman of the Year and First Team All-SIAC honors—and Brandon Peters, a 2024-25 All-Freshman selection. The 2023-24 team also held the title of the nation’s top defensive squad in NCAA Division II by field goal percentage.

With a 76-40 overall record (.655) and 59-21 conference mark (.734), Whittler holds the highest win total of any Morehouse coach in their first four seasons, and the second-highest winning percentage in program history.

As Morehouse begins a national search for new leadership, this transition marks the end of a significant chapter in HBCU basketball. Whittler’s departure leaves behind a legacy of excellence, both on and off the court, that has helped Morehouse stay amongst the elite in the SIAC and HBCU basketball at the Division II level.

MACON, GA | On Saturday, February 22, 2025, Terance Mathis, one of Georgia’s most accomplished athletes, was officially inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony in Macon. Mathis, currently the head HBCU football coach at Morehouse College, has built a legacy of excellence from his high school days to his professional and coaching careers.

Mathis’ journey to football greatness began at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. As a standout multi-sport athlete, he excelled in football, showcasing the talent that would later define his career. His high school performance earned him a scholarship to the University of New Mexico, where he became one of the most dominant receivers in NCAA history.

During his time at New Mexico, Mathis shattered multiple NCAA records, finishing his collegiate career with 263 receptions and 4,254 receiving yards. His dominance on the field earned him consensus All-American honors in 1989, and in recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2023.

Following his college success, Mathis entered the NFL in 1990, drafted by the New York Jets. He played four seasons with the team before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 1994, where he became a franchise legend. That year, Mathis made history with 111 receptions, making him just the eighth player in NFL history to surpass 100 catches in a single season. Over his eight seasons with the Falcons, Mathis amassed 573 receptions, 7,349 receiving yards, and 57 touchdowns—ranking third in franchise history for both receiving yards and touchdown receptions. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection in 1994.

After retiring as a player, Mathis transitioned into coaching, beginning as the offensive coordinator at Savannah State University in 2011. He later became the head coach at Pinecrest Academy in Georgia, focusing on player development and community engagement. In February 2024, Mathis was named head football coach at Atlanta-based HBCU Morehouse College, where he continues to inspire and mentor young athletes.

Mathis’ induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame marks yet another milestone in his storied career, honoring his contributions to sports in the state. He was recognized alongside fellow inductees such as Marquis Grisson (brother of current Morehouse Head Baseball Coach Antonio Grissom), Tim Hudson, Leo Mazzone, and Dennis Scott during the 69th Annual Induction Ceremony in Macon.

Reflecting on the honor, Mathis expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, and the Atlanta Falcons organization, which celebrated his achievement on social media. “Georgia sports legend, @coachmathis81. Congratulations on your @GAsportsHOF induction!” the Falcons tweeted.

Now leading Morehouse College’s HBCU football program, Terance Mathis continues to shape the future of the sport. His induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, along with his previous inductions into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame, highlights his incredible impact on the game. It is a testament to his dedication, skill, and lasting legacy in football.  For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com.

WASHINGTON, D.C. | In a thrilling MLK Day showdown, Division II Morehouse College stunned Division I HBCU rival Howard University, 79-76, in front of a packed Burr Gymnasium. The victory marked Morehouse’s first win over a Division I opponent in nearly three decades, dating back to triumphs over Howard in 1996 and 1997.

The Maroon Tigers (9-8) delivered a near-flawless performance, highlighted by sharp three-point shooting and clutch defense. Howard, the MEAC leader, suffered its second-consecutive loss to a Division II HBCU in less than a week, following a defeat to Bowie State.

First Half Dominance

Morehouse set the tone early, silencing the home crowd with an efficient offense led by sophomore guard Sincere Key, who drained two quick three-pointers. Forward Cedric Taylor III added another from beyond the arc, and the Maroon Tigers surged to a double-digit lead with a high-flying dunk by Omar Rowe off a lob from JerMontae Hill. By halftime, Morehouse led 40-28, thanks to 57% shooting from three-point range and stifling defense that forced seven turnovers.

Jaden Gray, Morehouse College, HBCU
Jaden Gray scored 22 points in the upset for Morehouse College.

Howard’s Rally Falls Short

Howard clawed back in the second half, using a 12-2 run to trim the deficit to two. But Morehouse responded with timely three-pointers from Key and Jaden Gray, who led all scorers with 22 points. With under three minutes remaining, the teams traded leads before Taylor III buried a 25-foot three-pointer to put Morehouse ahead for good.

In the final seconds, Gray’s two free throws extended the lead to 79-76. Howard had one last chance, but a potential game-tying three-pointer fell short, sending Morehouse into celebration.

Key Stats and Performers

The Maroon Tigers shot 44% from three-point range, with Taylor III and Key combining for eight triples. Amahn Decker anchored the defense with pivotal stops and rebounds, while Gray’s clutch performance solidified the historic upset.

This MLK Day victory solidifies Morehouse’s spot as a consistently high performing HBCU basketball program and fuels momentum for its upcoming SIAC schedule.

Bloomington, IL and New York, NY (October 14, 2024) – Eastside Golf, the lifestyle golf brand changing the cultural perception of the game, and State Farm® are shining a light on the golf talent at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) with the inaugural Eastside Golf Collegiate Invitational presented by State Farm. This year’s invitation-only tournament will support HBCU golf programs with a best-in-class competitive experience, giving them a platform to compete on a world-class golf course at a level parallel to the National Championships hosted by the NCAA D1.

“Our time playing on the Morehouse golf team was an incredibly formative and rewarding experience for us, and set the groundwork for where we are today. We know firsthand the challenges facing many collegiate golf programs, especially in the HBCU world, whether that’s lack of funding, access to practice courses, uniforms or transportation,” said Olajuwon Ajanaku, founder and Creative Director of Eastside Golf. “Our intent with our sponsor State Farm in hosting the Eastside Golf Collegiate Invitational is to create an unparalleled experience and tournament environment with all the bells and whistles at one of the top courses in the nation. We hope to be able to build this event to attract other D1 & DII colleges and universities to compete against HBCUs in the future making this a sought-after event for years to come.”

State Farm has been helping people protect what matters most for more than 100 years. We are committed to building stronger, safer and better-educated communities to create a better today and tomorrow. Its signature swingman logo, a young Black man dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans with a gold chain around his neck and a club in mid-backswing, is a depiction of Ajanaku, and is meant to convey that you can bring your authentic self to the game of golf, with full confidence.

Eastside Golf boasts notable relationships with global brands including Mitchell & Ness, seven collaborations with Jordan Brand, and strategic partnerships and licensing deals with major entities such as the NBA, MLB, Mitchell & Ness, Bridgestone and Mercedes-Benz USA. In a commanding performance, Howard University claimed a 35-21 victory over Morehouse College on Saturday in the HBCU NYC Football Classic. Howard was led by quarterback Jaylon Tolbert’s four touchdown passes.

First Half Control

Howard wasted no time asserting themselves on offense, opening the game with a balanced attack. On their first drive, wide receiver Kasey Hawthorne powered his way into the end zone on a 3-yard run to put the Bison up 7-0 with 9:43 remaining in the first quarter.

Minutes later, Howard struck again. Tolbert connected with wideout Se’Quan Osborne for a 12-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 14-0 by the 5:49 mark of the first quarter.

Morehouse responded in the second quarter as quarterback Miles Scott found wide receiver Ajani Williams for a 16-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 14-7. However, Howard countered just before halftime when Tolbert threw a deep 33-yard strike to Ke’Untae Mosley, giving the Bison a 21-7 advantage at the break.

Tolbert Shines in the Second Half

In the third quarter, Tolbert continued his aerial dominance, linking up with Richie Ilarraza for a 20-yard touchdown pass at the 9:11 mark, pushing Howard’s lead to 28-7.

The Bison extended their advantage early in the fourth quarter when Tolbert found Isiah Williams for another 20-yard touchdown pass, making the score 35-7. Tolbert finished the game with 267 passing yards, completing 23 of 41 attempts with four touchdowns and one interception.

Morehouse’s Late Rally

Despite trailing by 28 points, Morehouse showed resilience late in the game. Scott connected with Williams again for a 21-yard touchdown with 8:33 remaining, narrowing the gap to 35-14. Scott then found Kamrin Brunson for a 27-yard score with just under two minutes left, bringing the Maroon Tigers within 14 points, but the effort fell short as Howard held on for the 35-21 win.

Offensive and Defensive Standouts

Howard’s rushing attack, led by Jarett Hunter (92 yards) and Hawthorne (48 yards, 1 touchdown), provided solid support for Tolbert’s passing game. On the receiving end, Ilarraza had 7 catches for 77 yards and a score, while Mosley, Williams, and Osborne each added touchdown receptions.

Morehouse’s passing game showed promise, as Scott completed 17 of 31 passes for 209 yards and 3 touchdowns without any interceptions. Williams was his top target, pulling in 6 receptions for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Turnovers and Special Teams

While Howard committed two fumbles, they managed to recover both. Morehouse, on the other hand, struggled with ball security, losing two fumbles. On special teams, Howard’s Anthony Reagan Jr. impressed with a 40-yard kick return, while Morehouse’s Khasen Kirkland was perfect on all three extra-point attempts.

HBCU rivalries continue

Howard’s efficient passing game and stout defense proved to be the difference, as the Bison never allowed Morehouse to establish a consistent ground game. Morehouse finished with just 18 rushing attempts for -36 yards, largely due to Scott being sacked multiple times.

With this victory, Howard continues to build momentum heading into next weekend’s big HBCU rivalry game with Hampton. Morehouse will look to bounce back in their next contest, a neutral site matchup against winless Kentucky State.

At the HBCU NY Classic press conference, Morehouse College head coach Terance Mathis dropped an intriguing hint about the possible future of the school’s football program. Mathis hinted during the presser that the program might be thinking about moving from Division II to Division I, which is a topic that always has fans excited, especially the possible connection between the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) one of the most storied HBCUs in the country.

When asked if the team was preparing for a leap to Division I, Mathis responded, “Yes, there has been talk about moving up, and we’re preparing ourselves for that. If that is the future of this program, we’ll be ready when it happens.”

While rumors are flying on social media about Morehouse possibly joining the MEAC, Mathis kept the focus on his team’s current progress. He spoke about the deeper changes happening within the program. “These young men, they play for each other. They run through fire for each other. They won’t quit, no matter the score,” Mathis said. “They truly love each other, and we talk about loving and trusting each other.”

If Morehouse College moves to Division 1, it would be a huge moment for the school and HBCU sports. However, Mathis made it clear that his job is to prepare the team for the future, no matter what happens. “We always talk about being one body. If someone in that body isn’t on the same page, we won’t succeed,” he said.

For Terance Mathis, the program’s success isn’t just about moving divisions—it’s about building a strong bond between the players, coaches, and staff. “Everyone has to speak the same language, move in the same direction, and work together for this to be successful,” he explained.

Though there’s plenty of talk about Morehouse joining the MEAC, no official announcement has been made. For now, Mathis is focused on making sure his team is ready for whatever comes next. “My job is to make this program better for the future, and if moving to Division 1 is part of that, we’ll be ready,” he said.

If Morehouse does join the MEAC, it would renew the Black Ivy League rivalry with Howard University, another one of the most celebrated HBCUs in the country. Whether or not Morehouse joins the MEAC or another Division I conference, Coach Mathis is building a program that’s unified and ready for the challenges ahead.

Howard University, the reigning MEAC champs, is set to take on Morehouse College in East Rutherford, New Jersey at home of the New York Giants and New York Jets of the NFL in a highly anticipated HBCU Classic at MetLife Stadium. The HBCU NY Classic.

After last year’s 65-19 win over Morehouse, Howard comes into this game with confidence, ready to showcase its talent on a national stage. This game isn’t just about the rivalry—it’s about highlighting the legacy and culture of HBCU football.

One player drawing attention is Howard’s running back Eden James. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the son of NFL Hall of Famer Edgerrin James. Eden is stepping out of his father’s shadow and making a name for himself, especially after scoring a touchdown earlier this season against Rutgers. Coach Larry Scott has praised his work ethic on the weekly MEAC coach’s call, saying, “Eden’s not just riding on his last name—he’s putting in the work every day.”

His performance will be crucial as Howard looks to establish its running game and control the tempo against Morehouse.

For Howard to win again, it needs to dominate in the trenches. Morehouse College has struggled to stop the run, and Howard’s offensive line has a prime opportunity to take control. If Howard can establish the ground game and wear down Morehouse’s defense by keeping the ball in their hands, it’ll give the Bison a huge advantage.

HBCU Howard Morehouse College HBCU NY Classic

On defense, Howard must put pressure on Morehouse’s quarterback and prevent big plays. Keeping Morehouse’s passing attack in check will be key, and the Bison defense has shown it can step up in big moments.

This game goes beyond just the score—it’s a celebration of HBCU pride. As the reigning MEAC champs, Howard is carrying the flag for HBCU athletics and looking to continue its winning ways while showcasing the strength and talent within the HBCU football landscape on a national platform. While Morehouse comes in as the underdog team of one of the biggest brands in the culture.

The HBCU NY Classic will be broadcast live, on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 3 p.m. ET on CNBC and Peacock.

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist, an eight episode series and the latest offering from HBCU alum Will Packer debuts on Peacock on Thursday, August 5. The limited drama series is based on the iHeart true-crime podcast also produced by Packer. The story follows an armed robbery that occurs on the same night of Muhammad Ali’s 1970 comeback fight against Jerry Quarry in Atlanta. A street hustler named Chicken Man, portrayed by Kevin Hart, threw a party, the one that was eventually robbed, for an elite clientele in town for the fight, including some of the top Black mafia leaders at the time. The story takes you on a wild journey of the aftermath of the robbery and how the events ultimately transformed Atlanta from a southern town into the “Black Mecca.”

The Peacock series is laden with HBCU alums both in front of and behind the camera. Samuel L. Jackson, Morehouse, and Taraji P. Henson, Howard, deliver their standard level of excellence in their roles. Jackson in my opinion really delivered a memorable performance in his role of Frank Moten, a black mafia leader. The strength and power of his character was poignantly characterized as much through mannerisms as it was dialogue. David Banner, Southern University, expanded his artistic expression in the role of Missouri Slim, a character that eventually finds himself at odds with other mafia members. Banner talked about the feeling of disappearing into the character.

“We look just like our parents. So once they put the right makeup on, the right hair on. And we put those clothes on. It felt like we literally were our parents. I’ve never been touched that way. It almost shook me out of my character. It was so dope. I was like, we are so beautiful.”

“And that is something that I have to give. And I have to thank Will for this. Is that something that Eddie Murphy did in his time is to make sure that the revolutionary aspect of this film is the fact that we made black people look great, right,” Banner said during a recent HBCU screening of the series in Atlanta.

Several HBCU students along with members of HBCU related press entities were invited for a screening of the first episode.

There was significant representation of HBCU alums behind the camera as well. Dianne Ashford is a producer on the series. Both she and Packer are Florida A&M alums, although they didn’t know one another until later in life. Ashford connected with Packer 25 years ago, when she was looking to get away from her corporate job.

“I graduated with a degree in computer information systems, and I went to work at AT&T. I worked there for six years, and then I said, I want to change careers. I took a 30 day leave of absence from my corporate job to intern for this man on a project. I didn’t get paid, I wasn’t getting paid for my corporate job, and I wasn’t getting paid from him. And this was my first opportunity. I finished that project. I went back, I quit my corporate job and I moved back home (Atlanta). I moved back home and been going ever since for the last 23 years,” Ashford said.

Fight Night, Will Packer, HBCU, Atlanta, Peacock
Will Packer and Dianne Ashford, FAMU alumni, speak to the audience at the screening of Fight Night: Million Dollar Heist.

Ashford has been a producer on 33 projects to date according to her IMBD profile, most recently including Tyler Perry’s latest film Divorce in the Black.

While Packer loves showcasing black excellence from HBCUs on both sides of the camera, he insists that the excellence must come first.

“You talk about folks here that have these HBCU connections. We wanted the best. Make no mistake, we wanted the best. Period. And what happens and what other people miss sometimes is that when you talk about diversity, you talk about making sure that you’re being inclusionary. They forget that there is an opportunity to have the best people who happen to also be diverse.

Not saying oh you went to FAMU, you went to Clark Atlanta, Howard, let me hook you up over somebody who’s better than you. No no no. This is high quality, this is the biggest project on this platform all year. Right? So it has to be top notch. The people that we’re answering to, the financiers, the studios, all they want is the best. We deliver the best. And it happened to look like the room,” Packer said.

The leading actors in Fight Night are: Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, and Dexter Darden. This star-studded series was created and written by Shaye Ogbonna, a Howard University alum.

Peacock is a streaming service from NBCUniversal. With tons of hit movies and TV shows, Originals, current NBC & Bravo hits, and LIVE Sports including Sunday Night Football and Premier League

Morehouse College has received a $20 million anonymous gift to expand academic programs and professorships at the College, the only liberal arts institution in the nation dedicated to the education and development of Black men. The contribution–the largest gift ever designated for faculty positions at Morehouse–will be used to fund six endowed professorships that will enhance innovation and research in several academic areas.

The professorships will be added to the Division of Business and Economics, the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, Media, and the Arts (HSSMA), and the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, including the Office of Health Professions.

“Our faculty are the heartbeat of this institution. They lead our academic programs, develop the intellect of our students, and challenge them to go out in the world and be great. They have fueled the success of thousands of Morehouse Men,” said David A. Thomas, Ph.D., President of Morehouse College. “This transformational $20 million gift will allow us to increase the ranks of our esteemed and talented professors so that we can uphold the legacy of excellence in our classrooms as our as veteran faculty retire.”

Morehouse, which educates more than 2,300 students annually, has world-class academic programs that have been especially successful at cultivating men of distinction who rise as leaders in every field, including the U.S. Congress; the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General; the Olympics; as well as the recipients’ platforms of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Academy Awards. The College is the top producer of Black men who go on to receive doctorates, and is the top-feeder school for Black men entering top-ranked MBA programs as well as managerial and executive positions in business.

The anonymous $20 million gift was contributed to the “Making Men of Consequence” Campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in Morehouse’s 157-year history. The goals of the $500 million campaign are to expand Morehouse’s ability to offer scholarship support to any deserving student, recruit new faculty at the top of their fields, invest in innovative academic programs, and to fund campus improvements.

Specifically, the donation falls under the campaign’s “Inquiry with Distinction” pillar, which focuses on expanding investment in academics, including distinguished faculty positions, curricular and academic programming, and evidence-based research. The fundraising goal for that pillar is $100 million.Currently, Morehouse employs more than 300 full-and-part-time faculty.

“Investing in Morehouse College’s talented faculty is critical to maintaining the College’s reputation and relevance as a world-class institution of higher learning,” said Provost Kendrick Brown, Ph.D. “At Morehouse, we are developing men with integrity and intellect to become 21st-century leaders and innovators. That takes resources–not only funds for technology and classroom materials, but also a significant investment in attracting accomplished professors to Morehouse who will continue to elevate our profile in all academic areas.”

With the addition of the anonymous gift, nearly $290 million has been generated for the “Making Men of Consequence” Campaign to date.

“We are grateful to the anonymous donor for this generous investment in our faculty,” said Hodan Hassan, Vice President of Institutional Advancement. “This significant gift fuels our ongoing commitment to excellence in higher education and our ability to offer students transformative academic experiences that help them to reach their full potential.”

Morehouse College announced the retirement of Dr. David A. Thomas as president, effective June 30, 2025.

“Record-breaking” defines Thomas’s tenure at the College. Its innovative and impactful work has garnered international attention and partnerships with various notable institutions, corporations, and individuals; applications from high-achieving students have soared to an all-time high; substantial infrastructure investments have been completed and are in progress; and — in his seven years of service — the most funds have been raised among any president in Morehouse’s 157-year history. With over 30 years in higher education informing his vision, Dr. Thomas’s time in office has positioned Morehouse to exert even more profound influence in the 21st Century. After a period of rest, travel, and time with his family, he will join the Morehouse faculty and aid in the completion of the $500 million capital campaign, which has far surpassed the halfway mark since its launch in Fall 2021.

“In my inaugural address, I promised to do the absolute best I could for Morehouse, and I have since risen each day dedicated to delivering on that promise,” said Thomas. “Serving as president of Morehouse has been the honor of a lifetime. The best moment for a leadership transition is when an institution is strong, and the building blocks are in place to achieve its vision. I believe that time is now, and new leadership can bring fresh eyes, energy, and perspective to address challenges and discover new opportunities.”

Since 2018, Morehouse has transitioned from structural deficits to funding significant campus projects, enhancing its technology infrastructure, and paying employees competitively. Guided by a strategic plan, substantial investments in the campus’s physical infrastructure have been realized, including renovating the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, B.T. Harvey Stadium football field, Edwin C. Moses Track & Field, and several on-campus classrooms, labs, and lecture halls. This month, the College will break ground on a new residence hall, and a new student center will follow in the next few years, heralding in a new era for the on-campus residential experience.

Morehouse College

The strategic theme of “Morehouse Beyond Borders” has included milestone successes such as the launch of the globally accessible Morehouse Online undergraduate degree completion program, leadership in virtual reality as a pedagogical tool, the creation of the Center for Black Entrepreneurship with the Black Economic Alliance and Spelman College, the establishment of the Black Men’s Research Institute, and the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership’s Higher Education in Prisons program.

Willie Woods, chair of the Morehouse College Board of Trustees, expressed his gratitude for Thomas’s leadership. “It has been a privilege to work with and serve alongside David. His commitment to the betterment and excellence of Morehouse — my alma mater — has been unwavering. I deeply appreciate his bold leadership and contributions and am excited to see what his final year will bring.”

Morehouse College has launched a national search for its 13th president, led by trustee and alumnus Fred Humphries, who will chair the presidential search committee currently being assembled.

Thomas affirms, “I will forever remain committed to supporting Morehouse in its pursuit of excellence and delivering on its mission. I look forward to the upcoming school year and making it the best of my tenure.”

Some of the country’s best athletes sprinted down the newly renovated track at Morehouse College during the first annual Edwin Moses Legends Track and Field Meet.

Last month, the Puma American Track League hosted the event in honor of the Morehouse alum and Olympic gold medal winner.

“It’s fantastic to have a true world-class track meet with world-class athletes and the possibility of running their best times for the world this year,” Moses said.

Track and field athletes from all corners of the globe, united by their love for the sport, competed on the Edwin C. Moses Track at B.T. Harvey Stadium Football Field. Their performances were a preview of the excitement and talent that awaits us at the 2024 Olympics in Paris later this summer, a testament to the global reach and appeal of track and field.

Past Olympians on hand

Notable stars of the sport included 400-meter hurdler and 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, middle distance runners Matthew Boling and Angel Piccirillo, and 400-meter hurdler Khallifah Rosser.

Moses remembers when the school didn’t have a track for him to practice on when he was a student of the all-male HBCU in the 1970s. He had to resort to jumping fences instead of actual hurdles.

The original track was resurfaced for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, but little to no upkeep was given, resulting in disrepair.

In 2014, Moses had a vision for restoring and updating the track, which took almost ten years to complete.

“My vision back in 2014 was to get the track built and to bring events into the stadium,” Moses said.

Vision of Edwin Moses comes to life with some help

With the help of Morehouse and donors like Billie Aaron, wife of baseball legend Hank Aaron, the vision came to life last year.

Edwin Moses won the gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles in the 1976 and 1984 Olympics, where he set the world record for the event four times. His last record of 47.02 seconds in that event is still the fastest to this day.

“We have somebody who was very instrumental in the sport, especially for me being a hurdler, so meeting him was so big in doing what he did during his time to be able to bring everything full circle makes it big, and I’m glad to be part of it just like I’m sure the rest of the athletes are,” Rosser said.

“At this time of the sport when this has been impossible, a lot of it is due to Edwin’s success and all of the work he’s done at Morehouse,” Piccirillo said.

Historic moment in Track and Field

For McLaughlin-Levrone, the meet is a historic moment for the sport.

She said, “Edwin has done an amazing job in our sport; being a representative of the Black community has been at the top of the sport, and being able to come back now and bring it back here for us to be a part of that, I want to perform to the best of my ability to be able to showcase how far our sport has come and be able to continue that in the future.”

Moses hopes that the track will continue to bring more events to his alma mater and recruit for the Maroon Tigers track team.

“I hope the track is able to put us in a position to begin to recruit top quality guys and maybe come to Morehouse, get an Ivy League school education, and run track too,” Moses said.

While visiting Morehouse College to give a commencement speech, President Joe Biden made an announcement of his intentions for more funding at HBCUs.

He announced an additional $16 billion in funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities on Sunday, emphasizing their critical role in the nation’s educational and social landscape.

Biden acknowledged the unique and transformative legacy of Morehouse College, the only all-male historically black college in the country.

“In addition to the original $7 billion investment in HBCUs, I’m investing 16 billion more dollars because you’re vital to our nation,” Biden said.

This substantial financial commitment aims to address the financial disparities that many HBCUs face compared to other higher education institutions.

President Joe Biden also highlighted the necessity of modern resources for HBCUs to remain competitive and continue producing exceptional graduates.

“Most HBCUs don’t have the endowments. The jobs of the future require sophisticated laboratories, sophisticated opportunities on campus,” he noted.

This investment is intended to help HBCUs to develop state-of-the-art facilities and expand opportunities for their students.

The President also tied this investment to broader efforts to ensure economic and social justice. By enhancing the capabilities of HBCUs, Biden believes these institutions can play a crucial role in creating generational wealth and leadership within Black communities.

“We’re opening doors so you can walk into a life of generational wealth, to be providers and leaders for your families and communities,” Biden told the Morehouse College crowd.

Biden also gave a nod to his Vice President, Kamala Harris, in a playful way that hit differently on an HBCU campus.

“I have no doubt that a Morehouse man will be president one day, just after an AKA from Howard,” Biden said to laughter and applause. “She’s tough, guys.”

Morehouse College has hired a former Atlanta Falcon to take over its football program. Terance Mathis, who spent more than a decade in the NFL, has been named as the next head coach of the Atlanta-based HBCU.

Mathis previously spent two seasons as offensive coordinator at Savannah State in 2011 and 2012.

“We are in a season of change and enhancement within Morehouse Athletics,” said Morehouse AD Harold Ellis, who joined his alma mater last August. “The College is known for producing some of the most skilled and gifted professionals across all industries, and that same spirit of excellence must be established within our athletic programs. I’m excited to welcome Coach Mathis to The House and look forward to partnering with him in taking the football program to the next level.”

Drafted in 1990 by the New York Jets, Mathis played the majority of his career with the Atlanta Falcons. He last played in the NFL in 2002 with the Pittsburgh Steelers and then retired in 2004.

Terance Mathis played for the New York Jets from 1990-94. During his career there, he was used as a punt and kick returner and wide receiver. In 1991, he led the team in kickoff returns with 599 yards. He also had 28 receptions for 329 yards.

Terance Mathis Morehouse College

He began his stellar career with the Atlanta Falcons in 1994. He caught 111 passes and was ranked third in the NFL in touchdown receptions in his first season in Atlanta. Mathis was selected to the Pro Bowl that season. In 1998, he made his first post-season appearance playing in Super Bowl XXXIII for the Atlanta Falcons. In the Super Bowl, he led the Falcons in receptions with seven for 85 yards along with a three-yard touchdown catch. While with the Falcons, Mathis became the team’s all-time touchdowns and receptions leader. He had a one-year stint with the Pittsburg Steelers before retiring in 2004.

Mathis replaces Gerard Wilcher, who was fired after one season at the helm in 2023. Morehouse College is coming off back-to-back 1-9 seasons.

Hue Jackson is looking to get back into coaching and Morehouse College needs a football coach – could this work?

Jackson is reportedly in negotiations with Morehouse to become its next head coach, according to a report by HBCU Legends.

Morehouse College is looking for a new head coach for the second time in less than a year as it parted ways with Gerard Wilcher. Wilcher went 1-9 his lone season at his alma mater before being fired after his only win of the season against Clark Atlanta.

Hue Jackson, Grambling State, Morehouse College

Jackson has spent the last two seasons at Grambling State, guiding the team to an 8-14 record. He was fired following a 5-6 performance in 2023. After being fired, Jackson acknowledged that HBCUs had their issues, but also stated he would be fine coaching at another one.

“I think we all know programs can’t be turned around in two years at instutions where funding is extremely inadequate,” Jackson said. “Facilities, equipment and training support are insignificant dispair. Institutional support is limited and opportunities are derailed at every turn. I think we all know that. But again, the lack of transparency, coordination and collaboration, in my opinion, will continue to plague the HBCUs.”

Morehouse College is coming off back-to-back 1-9 seasons. The program hasn’t won an SIAC title since 1991.

Morehouse College basketball team has taken over the top spot in the SIAC East after back-to-back wins over Benedict College and Savannah State in the same week.

The 76-69 win over Benedict, the #8 team in NCAA Div. II moved Morehouse into first place in the SIAC and the ensuing 68-66 win over Savannah State a couple of days later improved the team record to 11-5 heading into the back half of conference play.

Significant contributions from freshman guard and wing players Damion Mitchell and Cedric Taylor III led the team to the big win over Benedict College. Mitchell ended the game with 14 points, three assists, and seven rebounds, while Taylor contributed 17 points and six rebounds.

“They’ve been playing a lot of minutes early, so I told them about four games ago, ‘You all are not freshmen anymore.’ We knew what type of players they were and knew they could step in and play at this level,” said Coach Whittler.

“I wouldn’t call it nervous, but it’s a lot of pressure. I just stay humble and keep my head down and work through it,” said Mitchell when asked about playing big minutes as a freshman.

Morehouse SIAC

Morehouse also won the rebounding battle 39-29 on the night to overcome their shooting struggles, shooting 20 percent from three and 39 percent from the field.

Benedict’s explosive offense kept the game close for most of the night. The Maroon Tigers’ biggest lead was only eight points with six minutes to play in the first half. There was also a total of 10 lead changes throughout the game.

Benedict had three double-figure scorers: Asanti Price scored 19 points, Tim Moore scored 18, and Marshaun West scored 12. Back-to-back big dunks from Price and Moore caused a quick momentum shift that would not last long before Morehouse regained its composure.

“I just let them know it isn’t worth more than two points,” said coach Whittler.

The big week for Morehouse College should give them some momentum as they continue their four-game road stretch into the stretch of SIAC play.

Gerard Wilcher is allegedly being let go just days after winning his first game as Morehouse College head coach.

Multiple sources confirmed to HBCU Gameday’s Kobe Scales that Wilcher is out as head coach after ten games. The players and director of athletics Harold Ellis are reportedly set to meet on Tuesday morning.

Wilcher posted a message airing his complaints with the conditions at Morehouse.

After a hard fought 8 months, my time has come to an end at my Alma Mater, Morehouse College.

Please know that I tried every-day to uplift my beloved Morehouse. Statistically, we improved in almost every category. We played a challenging schedule with only 2 home games and even though we asked numerous times, we were not given the resources to have a strength and conditioning program.

I was hired after the recruiting season and had no recruiting budget. However, the College has made the decision to no longer retain me rather than give us the support and resources we need in order to be successful.

Overall, I would like to thank my team who fought through so many adversities and never wavered in their belief.

And although we were underfunded in scholarships, we were still able to retain the Big Cat Trophy with a 35-21 win over Clark Atlanta University.

“Dear Old Morehouse, Dear Old Morehouse, we have pledged our lives to thee; and will ever, yea ever yea forever give ourselves in Loyalty.

This news comes a week after sources indicated that Wilcher was on the hot seat. He denied it at the time.

“I’m not leaving, and I refuse to resign. I will make them publicly fire me, if they want me out,” Wilcher told HBCU Gameday. “I know there are some people that aren’t happy that we haven’t been able to get it done, but I have not even been approached about leaving.”

A Morehouse College alumnus, Wilcher took over the program this spring after Rich Freeman was let go. The program went 1-9 in 2022 and hasn’t won a conference title in over 30 years. He was on the job for just over eight months.

Morehouse College defeated Clark Atlanta 35-21 for its first win since beating CAU in the season finale back in 2022.

Gerard Wilcher tweeted a photo with a statement looking towards the next season.

“Great finish to a tough 2023 and a great look into 2024!”

ATLANTA – Neither Morehouse College nor Clark Atlanta University will be headed to the postseason as both teams come into this week’s game 0-9. But there is plenty for both schools to play for.

Following its loss on Oct 28 in its homecoming game, Wilcher was asked how difficult it would be to keep the energy up moving forward.

“Is it when you lose homecoming,” Wilcher asked rhetorically, “or when you lose nine in a row?”

Morehouse College spent the first six weeks of their season on the road, starting with two non-conference games against Virginia Union University and Howard University. Meanwhile, Clark Atlanta University was able to schedule four home games, including the Battle for the AUC on Nov. 4th.

Neither team has been able to conjure up many highlights this season, CAU even fired head coach Willie Slater after a Week Five loss to Lane College. Slater has been temporarily replaced by interim head coach, Richard Moncrief.

“I’m going to do everything that’s required of me to return as head coach. Once again, I love it here at CAU,” Moncrief told HBCU Gameday. “We’re sitting on a goldmine, this is a hidden gem. We’re the only school with “Atlanta” in the name, I think that is huge and something we should look to capitalize on in the future.”

Earlier in the rivalry week Wilcher also responded to rumors of an eventual departure of his own.

“I’m not leaving, and I refuse to resign. I will make them publicly fire me, if they want me out,” Wilcher told HBCU Gameday. “I know there are some people that aren’t happy that we haven’t been able to get it done, but I have not even been approached about leaving.”

Looking forward, each coach understands the importance of winning the Battle for the AUC. Wilcher compared this game to his time at Lehigh University and the importance of beating Lafayette.

Moncrief’s comparisons were to other major sporting events.

“This is the Super Bowl, this is Game Seven of the NBA finals,” he told HBCU Gameday. “This is the AUC national championship.”

The pressure will be on each coach tomorrow as each school’s administration will surely be looking at the product that each coach puts on the field. Students will pack the stands looking for AUC bragging rights. Morehouse College will look to defend its three game win streak against Clark Atlanta, as well as get its  first win of the season. CAU will look to defend its home turf, while also gaining its first win of the season.

As a way to stay in shape, maintain mental health, and build a family environment on campus, the AUC Boxing Club is in its second year of introducing the sport to a new group of students.

The club reaches out to all students within the Atlanta University Center to teach the fundamentals of boxing and create a community for them to grow.

“When it comes to boxing, everyone is the same. We all meet and check on each other 24/7. That’s what we do,” said Jacoby Bell, a Senior at Morehouse College.

Bell and his classmate, Bryce, created the club in 2021 to share their passion for boxing.

Since he was in the ninth grade, Bell started boxing in his hometown of Covington, Ga., which became a way to help him destress and keep his cool under pressure. His sparring partners and coaches became his second family, and he wanted to recreate that feeling at his soon-to-be alma mater.

“With Morehouse having that family and brotherhood culture, I was looking for people interested in boxing, and so we threw a fight night on accident,” Bell said.

The “accident” started when he sent out texts and posts on his group chats for everyone to come to Purdue Hall and spar in the lobby. Over 100 people showed up for the unauthorized event but got in trouble for breaking the COVID-19 rules restricting large gatherings on school grounds. The group broke the rules, but the administrators saw a need to help the students interact with each other.

“[The school] reached out to us and said ‘y’all won’t be in trouble if you start a club, and we will help you start it,’” Bell said.

Forming the AUC Boxing Club through Morehouse College, they decided to focus the club on teaching boxing, tools to help their mental health, and building a close-knit family away from family while meeting at different locations throughout the AUC like Morehouse’s tennis courts or the promenade on Clark Atlanta University’s campus.

“We’re teaching freshmen to build their confidence and give them a family within the boxing club and connect with different people,” Bell said.

Bell told HBCU Gameday that he and his volunteer coaches from boxing gyms around the Atlanta metro area teach the students foundational boxing skills like basic footwork, positioning their hands for defense, and throwing punches.

“We teach the defense first because we’re never trying to start a fight or altercation,” Bell said.

The club is also planning classes for female students in the AUC to teach them self-defense techniques and scheduling study sessions when it’s time for midterms and final exams.

What Bell says he gets out of the club the most is being able to mentor other students in the AUC and creating a safe space for them to get help when they need it.

“It’s not always easy to go to counseling or the doctor,” Bell said, “but it’s not hard to come and sit on the tennis court and workout for a little bit or just talk.”

The club’s hard work and skills will be put to the test as they host a fight night at Morehouse’s Walter E. Massey Leadership Center on Nov. 2.

The live event will feature several matches between the AUC Boxing Club members and the Georgia State University and Kennesaw State University clubs. Tickets are on sale now, starting at $5.

Quinton Williams‘ dual-threat ability was on full display to lead Howard. He put up 205 yards through the air and 52 on the ground to keep Morehouse’s defense guessing. The Bison also found help from pass-catcher Kasey Hawthorne, who collected two receptions for 21 yards as Williams’ favorite target on the evening. The team’s potent offense accumulated an impressive 613 total yards.

Morehouse was led by quarterback Derrach West. He completed 5-of-15 passes for 23 yards. Zion Bouie added 112 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Key Metrics to Victory: Howard

  • Play selection – recorded a fairly even pass-run split with 35 passing attempts and 33 rushing attempts
  • Possession – controlled the ball for 25:56 (45% of the game)
  • Third down success – converted on 67% of third downs (8-12) while Morehouse converted just 31% (5-16)

Both teams face their next test on Sept. 16. Howard has a neutral site clash with Hampton, while Morehouse faces an Albany St. (GA) squad recovering from a loss of its own. The Bison will look to keep their momentum rolling and earn another win. On the other side, the Maroon Tigers will take another shot at their first win.

The Morehouse College community is mourning the loss of two students, including the son of a former NFL star and HBCU legend Hugh Douglas.

Christon Files Jr. and Hugh Douglas, both members of the Class of 2025, died following injuries sustained in a car accident in Atlanta on Labor Day, according to multiple reports.

Files Jr. was a track and field athlete. Douglas is the son of former NFL Pro Bowler Hugh Douglas, who played his college football at Central State University in the 1990s before going on to a long NFL career with the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles.

Douglas tweeted several photos of his namesake on Tuesday in tribute.

“You were already a better man than me,” Doulgas wrote in a tweet.

Hugh Douglas, Morehouse College

Morehouse College put out a release announcing the passing of the two students early Tuesday morning, describing each of the young men who passed away.

Hugh Douglas was an exceptional student who displayed immense dedication and promise in pursuing a business administration degree with a concentration in finance. He was a member of the Morehouse Business Association, an AltFinance Fellow, and a Goldman Sachs Fellow, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in his field. Over the summer, he interned at Ares Management Corporation in Los Angeles.

Christion Files Jr. was a remarkable young man who made his mark academically and in extracurricular activities. He was a business administration major with a concentration in marketing. His leadership qualities were evident through his role as the co-captain of the Morehouse Track & Field team, media chair for the Junior Class Council, and as a dedicated member of the Morehouse Business Association. Beyond these achievements, Christion was known for his photography and videography skills, which he used to create high-quality content for students, campus organizations, Morehouse Athletics, and the College’s marketing office.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Douglas and Files’ families in their time of need.

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Thursday, Student Freedom Initiative announced a long-term strategic partnership with Morehouse College and Stats Perform, global leader in AI solutions for the sports industry, to create an “AI in Basketball” course. The partnership aims to offer education about applications of AI in sport, provide internships, and expand job opportunities upon graduation for students attending AUCC member institutions.

Through the effective use of AI, organizations can use systems to help humans make better decisions. Recently, Fortune highlighted the fact that “[t]he newest AI systems can recognize individual players, movements, plays, or patterns without human eyes viewing a screen. That means a coach can find the exact footage he or she needs without searching through hours of video.” According to Mark A. Brown, PhD, Executive Director at Student Freedom Initiative, “The promise of AI in sports is emerging; leveraging sports is a perfect pathway to expose our HBCU students to the foundational principles of AI and address the wealth gap by better positioning them for the in-demand jobs of the future.”

Morehouse College

The AI in Basketball course aims to harness the promise of AI in sports for the benefit of HBCU students. The for-credit class, which launches this fall on Morehouse’s campus, will welcome students from Morehouse, Spelman College, and Clark University who have chosen majors in the areas of math, physics, and engineering. Dr. Patrick Lucey will teach the course, Chief Scientist at Stats Perform, working in connection with Morehouse faculty. “Stats Perform has been the pioneer of AI in the basketball space for well over a decade, not only with our computer vision systems to collect player and ball tracking data, but also with our predictive models using machine learning,” explains Dr. Lucey. “We are excited to show the students some of the many ways AI can take basketball to new levels for teams, players, media organizations, fans, and others, and see it as the perfect vehicle for students to get a deep understanding on how AI can be used across many fields.”

“As this specific corporate-academic partnership with Stats Perform was being designed, we collectively agreed to be very intentional,” said Dr. Alfred R. Watkins, Department Chair for Computer Science, at Morehouse College. “We sought a long-term industry partner, the inclusion of all three HBCUs in the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUCC), and specific learning and career opportunities within high-demand, high-growth sectors of the economy for our students.”

As the leading provider in sports data collection and predictive analysis–and as a portfolio company of Vista Equity Partners, whose Chairman and CEO Robert F. Smith paid off the student debt for the Morehouse graduating class of 2019–Stats Perform was a natural fit. Stats Perform’s commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion played a key role as well.

CEO Carl Mergele commented, “At Stats Perform, we recognize the immense impact of DEI efforts on our communities, and on our own success and growth. Representation plays a vital role in fostering innovation and driving our collective potential to new heights. Stats Perform is thrilled to establish this partnership with the Atlanta University Center Consortium and the Student Freedom Initiative, and we look forward to driving change and hopefully creating a model for this type of program that others can follow,” said Mergele.

Employment opportunities will form an important part of the new partnership. Students who complete the AI in Basketball course will be able to apply for a limited number of internships with Stats Perform, with the potential for these internships to transition into full-time employment.

“Targeted, strategic public-private partnerships that include measurable outcomes between Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) and innovative companies like Stats Perform will continue to be the accelerant to transformative change,” according to Keith B. Shoates, Chief Operating Officer, Student Freedom Initiative. “We are hopeful that other firms continue to make similar long-term investments in our MSIs and their students.”

Demetrius Calip II is headed from Last Chance U to Morehouse College.

The 6’4 guard committed to Morehouse earlier this month. Calip is the son of a former Michigan guard by the same name who helped that program win the 1989 NCAA title.

The younger Calip was rated as a three-star prospect by both Rivals and 247 Sports out of Taft High School in Woodland Hills, California. He led Taft High School to a 22-11 record and a spot in the regional quarterfinals of the CIF State Division III playoffs, averaging 16.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Demetrius Calip II started his career at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2020 where he played in two games.

From there he went back to the West Coast where he spent a season with East Los Angeles College, which was chronicled in the second season of “Last Chance U: Basketball.” Calip averaged 8.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists over 13.4 minutes in 26 games. He shot better than 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from the 3-point line to help the team to a 27-4 record.

He now joins a Morehouse College program that went 18-10 last season and 14-7 in SIAC play.

On July 8, 2023 the Minority Coaches Association of Georgia (MCAOFGA) hosted its annual HBCU Mega Camp at Morehouse College.

The aurora on the Morehouse campus for the camp was indescribable. No matter where you were on campus there were reminders of the hallowed pipeline of great black leaders that once walked the same steps you were taking.

Saturday’s camp consisted of three different position groups, LB/RB, QB/WR/DB, and OL/DL. Multiple offers were given out to a handful of standout players that attended the camp from across the nation.

With Morehouse College being the host school for one of the biggest HBCU Mega Camps in the country, Tiger head coach, Gerald Wilcher and the Maroon faithful hope that they can recruit a bevy of talent to Westview Drive SW to propel their football program back to winning ways.

The NBA Summer League is around the corner and Xavier Brewer, son of former Morehouse College coach Grady Brewer, is getting his chance to shine.

Brewer has been announced as part of the Detroit Pistons’ Summer League squad last week.

Brewer spent last season with Alabama A&M after starting his career at Morehouse College. He is the son of the late Grady Brewer, who coached at Morehouse College for two decades before his untimely death at the age of 63.

The 6’9 forward played a supporting role at Morehouse as a freshman in the 2018-19 season, averaging 2.5 points per game in eight minutes per contest. He shot 42 percent from the 3-point line that season. His playing time increased the following season as he averaged nine points per game in 20.3 minutes per game during the 2019-20 season, his father’s last as head coach.

Grady Brewer (center) is the father of Xavier Brewer.

The 2021-2022 season resulted in similar production as he averaged seven points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He entered the transfer portal following the season and landed in the SWAC with Alabama A&M.

Brewer averaged 2.7 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game in 32 contests for AAMU.  Those weren’t All-SWAC numbers by any stretch, but it appears Brewer’s combination of size (6’9, 215) and pedigree has helped him earn a shot at the next level. Now he will participate in the NBA Summer League with 2023 NBA Draft picks and young players looking to make their marks in the NBA.
