History has been made for HBCU football at the NCAA Division II level. For the first time ever, five HBCUs have earned spots in the NCAA Division II Football Championship field, a groundbreaking moment announced on Saturday night that underscores just how far the CIAA and SIAC have come on the national stage. With two selections from the CIAA and a record three from the SIAC, this postseason marks a new era of opportunity and legitimacy for Black college football in Division II.

CIAA Sends Two: JCSU and Virginia Union

The CIAA will enter the postseason with two programs—one a rising newcomer and the other an established powerhouse.

Johnson C. Smith: A First-Time Invite

The headline of the bracket is clear: CIAA champion Johnson C. Smith is officially dancing.

At 10–1 overall, the Golden Bulls secured the No. 2 seed in Super Region One, earning both a home game and national respect for the most remarkable season in school history.

This marks JCSU’s first NCAA Division II playoff appearance, a feat decades in the making. Their reward is a home matchup against Frostburg State (9–2), a physical program with postseason experience. But with a conference title, ten wins, and newfound national attention lifting the program, the Bulls enter as one of the region’s most intriguing teams.

Virginia Union: A Four-Year Playoff Run

Joining them is Virginia Union, the CIAA runner-up and one of the hottest programs in Division II.

At 9–2, VUU secured the third seed in Super Region One and will host California (PA) in Richmond.

This selection marks Virginia Union’s fourth consecutive playoff appearance, stretching back to 2022—an unprecedented run for the school and a testament to the sustained excellence built under Dr. Alvin Parker. Last season, the Panthers made national noise by winning two playoff games, the deepest run in program history. They’ll look to build on that momentum again with home-field advantage to start.

SIAC Makes HBCU History With Three Playoff Teams

If the CIAA’s showing is impressive, the SIAC’s haul is historic.

For the first time ever, the conference will send three HBCUs to the Division II playoffs, including the top seed in Super Region Two.

Albany State: No. 1 in the Region

Albany State enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed in Super Region Two after finishing 10–1 overall. Their only loss came to FCS program Florida A&M, making the Golden Rams one of the most battle-tested teams in the country.

ASU will host Valdosta State, the same program that previously fell to Johnson C. Smith earlier this season. It’s a matchup dripping with storyline potential—and one that Albany State enters with supreme confidence after dominating the SIAC from start to finish.

Benedict: Still Dangerous at 9–2

Benedict College (9–2) returns to the postseason after finishing as runner-up in the SIAC Championship Game.
The Tigers earned an at-large bid and will travel to face Wingate (9–2) in what promises to be a hard-hitting, defensive battle. Benedict remains one of the region’s premier programs, fully capable of making another deep playoff push.

Kentucky State: A Breakthrough Moment

Completing the SIAC trio is Kentucky State, which will make its first NCAA Division II playoff appearance after a 9–2 breakthrough season.

The Thorobreds will head to South Carolina to face No. 3 seed Newberry (9–1), a heavyweight with a strong résumé. But KSU’s physical brand and resurgent defense give them a chance to shock the region and extend their historic season.

A Landmark Weekend Ahead

All first-round games will take place this Saturday, kicking off a postseason unlike any we’ve seen in Division II HBCU football history. With five programs in the field—two from the CIAA and three from the SIAC—Black college football has an opportunity to make an unmistakable imprint on the national playoff landscape.

Prepare for a historic weekend. And get ready to see how many HBCU programs advance as the road to the Division II national championship begins.

The road to ESPN’s Red Lobster Band of The Year (BOTY) for Division II bands has reached its final stage, and five outstanding HBCU programs remain in contention for the top honor.

At the top of the list, Virginia State University’s Trojan Explosion continues its dominant season with a cumulative score of 878.5, built from monthly totals of 287.5 (September), 294.2 (October), and 296.8 (November). The Trojan Explosion has combined precision drill design with a balanced sound that has impressed both fans and judges throughout the season.

In second place, Fayetteville State University’s Marching Bronco Xpress has held steady at 830.75 (280 + 276 + 274.75), demonstrating a consistent and polished presentation. Miles College’s Purple Marching Machine remains close behind with 828.6 (267 + 281.1 + 280.5), highlighted by first-place finishes in Musicality and high-energy halftime shows.

Fourth in the rankings, Tuskegee University’s Marching Crimson Pipers earned a total of 800.1 (244.5 + 285.6 + 270), with their best work coming in October. Winston-Salem State University’s Red Sea of Sound rounds out the top five with 793.5 (246 + 270.5 + 277), capping an impressive run of steady growth and renewed momentum.

“Due to the remarkable performance improvements exhibited by the participating bands, this year’s decision on the top two finalists will be exceptionally challenging,” said Professor Dowell Taylor, BOTY Chair and Jackson State University Director of Bands Emeritus. “Any one of the five bands has demonstrated exceptional talent and deserves recognition of this caliber.”

Dr. Julian White, Florida A&M University Director of Bands Emeritus and BOTY Chair, emphasized the comprehensive nature of the process. “It will not be easy to select two bands from the Top 5 based on just the highest scores,” White said. “Our committee has a responsibility to select the top bands that check all the boxes to ensure a fair and impartial process for all involved.”

Category-by-category results show how deep the Division II competition runs. Miles College claimed first in “Musicality,” while Virginia State finished first in “Pictures, Drill & Design,” “Percussion,” “Drum Majors,” and “Auxiliaries” — an extraordinary sweep that underlines their season-long dominance.

Still, every band in the top five earned multiple top-five finishes across the score sheets. Fayetteville State, Tuskegee, and Winston-Salem State all placed highly in various areas, proving that the final decision could hinge on the smallest of details.

The BOTY committee will spend the weekend deliberating, giving each of the top five bands equal and thorough consideration before announcing the two Division II finalists on Tuesday, November 18, exclusively via HBCU Gameday.

As anticipation builds across the HBCU band community, one thing is certain: no matter which names are called, excellence will once again take center stage in ESPN’s Red Lobster Band of The Year.

The stage is set for the 2025 SIAC Championship, featuring two familiar foes — the Albany State Golden Rams (9-1, 8-0 SIAC) and the Benedict College Tigers (9-1, 7-1 SIAC). The matchup carries extra intrigue, as the teams met earlier this season in Columbia, South Carolina, where Albany State dominated in a commanding 31-3 victory.

Albany State arrives at the title game as the conference’s lone unbeaten team in SIAC play, following a 48-3 rout of archrival Fort Valley State in the 35th Fountain City Classic on November 8. The Golden Rams struck early and never looked back, holding the Wildcats to a single field goal while showcasing balance and efficiency on both sides of the ball.

Benedict’s path to the championship was far more dramatic. The Tigers advanced after a double-overtime thriller against Savannah State in Savannah, Georgia, that same day. Despite leading several statistical categories—including rushing yards and first downs—Benedict struggled to pull away in regulation, as both teams managed only one touchdown before overtime. Ultimately, the Tigers persevered to secure their return to the conference title stage.

This time its for the conference crown and NCAA Playoffs

Their earlier meeting on October 25 was a statement game for Albany State. The Rams amassed nearly 500 yards of total offense while limiting Benedict to just 217 yards, showcasing the dominance that has defined their season. This time, the rematch will be played on Albany State’s home turf at ASU Coliseum, giving the Rams a distinct advantage in front of their home crowd.

Beyond the conference title, the stakes are high. The winner will earn the SIAC’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II playoffs. With both teams boasting just one loss—Albany State’s narrow 33-25 defeat to FCS power Florida A&M, and Benedict’s setback to Albany State—the victor could be well-positioned to host a first-round playoff game. Both programs have proven their ability to compete at a championship level, setting the stage for a hard-fought rematch that could define their seasons.

But a deeper look reveals the HBCU conference made a strategic move while a D2 power waning is in a weak spot.

A decision by Kentucky State University — an HBCU — to change its final regular-season opponent has sparked controversy in NCAA Division II football. It has also exposed cracks in one of the sport’s once-proud leagues.

Kentucky State (8-2), currently No. 6 in NCAA Super Region Two, was originally scheduled to travel to face Delta State (7-3, ranked No. 7) in a pivotal Week 11 matchup. However, the school has amended its schedule to instead host Shorter University — prompting Delta State’s head coach Todd Cooley to blast the move in an article published by Football Scoop.

“They’re supposed to be coming to Cleveland this weekend to play us, and they’re not. They’re playing Shorter,” Cooley said. “It’s setting a precedent that shouldn’t be set.”

HBCU conference had an agreement in 2023

The decision is not without precedent. In fact, it stems from a formal agreement between the HBCU-based Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and the emerging Conference Carolinas league. The two conferences signed a football scheduling alliance in December 2023 that ensured non-championship-qualifying teams would face off in Week 11 to boost NCAA postseason resumes and avoid long, costly trips.

Per the agreement, participating schools must be above .500, must not exceed 11 regular-season games, and cannot be required to travel more than 500 miles. With other Conference Carolinas options out of range or ineligible, 2-8 Shorter was selected to face Kentucky State.

Dr. Anthony Holloman addresses crowd at SIAC football media day.

SIAC Commissioner: This was strategic

SIAC Commissioner Dr. Anthony Holloman was clear: the decision was about protecting student-athletes and maximizing playoff potential.

“As the commissioner of the SIAC, I am an unapologetic advocate for my member institutions,” Holloman said. “We want to play for championships. And we want to get as many deserving teams in the NCAA playoffs as possible.”

He pushed back on accusations that Kentucky State was dodging competition.

“This wasn’t about playing the worst team,” Holloman added. “We created this partnership to avoid what Kentucky State and Delta State had initially agreed to. Kentucky State would’ve been on the bus for eight hours. This was a strategic decision, not a malicious one.”

Gulf South conference on the ropes

The conflict also shines a light on the Gulf South Conference’s shrinking footprint. Once a powerhouse in D2 football, the GSC has been decimated by realignment and NCAA Division I transitions. It now features only four football-playing members: Delta State, Valdosta State, West Alabama, and West Florida.

With just three conference opponents, Delta State’s path to a strong strength of schedule and quality wins is increasingly narrow — making the canceled Kentucky State game sting even more. Especially after it lost 27-23 to Valdosta State after being up 21-3 on Saturday.

HBCU league continues to innovate

Both Kentucky State and Delta State remain playoff hopefuls. But instead of settling it on the field, committee members will now have to weigh strength of schedule, context, and optics — including whether a contracted matchup could or should have occurred.

One thing is clear: in the ever-shifting world of NCAA D2 football, conference alliances, HBCU strategy, and realignment realities are colliding — and everyone is watching.

ATLANTA, GA — As the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) prepares for its HBCU championship showdown between Benedict and Albany State, the rest of the league won’t be sitting idle. Thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with Conference Carolinas, two additional SIAC programs will suit up in Week 11, offering fans more football and giving teams a chance to boost their NCAA postseason credentials.

The SIAC, a proud HBCU conference and mainstay of Division II football, will host two cross-conference matchups on Saturday, Nov. 15, as part of a prearranged scheduling alliance with the emerging Conference Carolinas, which is fielding NCAA football teams for the first time in 2025.

The unique partnership calls for two teams from each conference—excluding their respective championship participants—to face off in late-season contests. The goal? Give these programs another opportunity to compete, develop, and impress NCAA playoff selection committees.

Kentucky State impressive

Kentucky State University (8-2, 6-1 SIAC), which finished just behind championship participants Benedict and Albany State, will host Shorter University at Alumni Stadium in Frankfort, Kentucky. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

Allen University (5-5, 5-3 SIAC), another rising HBCU program, will take on Erskine College at Westwood High School Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, with kickoff set for 5 p.m.

For SIAC Commissioner Dr. Anthony Holloman, the alliance with Conference Carolinas represents an innovative approach to addressing the competitive challenges that come with being an HBCU league within the NCAA Division II structure.

“Opportunities like these not only help with postseason visibility, but they strengthen our programs by allowing them to test themselves against new opponents in meaningful games,” Holloman noted during SIAC Media Day.

HBCU conferences continue to evolve

The move also demonstrates how HBCU programs are continuing to evolve with the times. By stepping outside traditional scheduling models, the SIAC is giving its teams more chances to showcase their value on the national stage.

For Conference Carolinas, which is establishing itself in the NCAA football world, the partnership offers an early credibility boost—and an association with one of Division II’s most historic HBCU leagues.

As Benedict and Albany State clash for the SIAC crown, Kentucky State and Allen will fight for pride, momentum, and perhaps a late-season playoff push—helping to keep HBCU football front and center even beyond the championship game.

]]>
Two of Atlanta’s most iconic HBCUs, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College, announced transformative gifts totaling $76 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. These gifts further cement her as one of the most significant benefactors in the history of Black higher education. The dual announcements—$38 million to each institution—mark Scott’s continued commitment to advancing educational equity and expanding opportunity across HBCUs.

Transformative Investment in Clark Atlanta University

At Clark Atlanta University (CAU), MacKenzie Scott’s $38 million donation is the largest private gift in the university’s history, bringing her total contributions to an unprecedented $53 million following a $15 million gift in 2020. The unrestricted funds will enhance academic programs, expand student success initiatives, and strengthen the university’s ability to ensure that financial barriers do not impede access to education.

“The magnitude of Ms. Scott’s generosity significantly enhances our capacity to expand the student success initiatives and support infrastructure already underway, preparing students to thrive on the global stage for generations to come,” said Dr. George T. French Jr., president of Clark Atlanta University. “Her continued support underscores her commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and her trust in our mission to foster academic excellence and innovation.”

Founded through the 1988 merger of Atlanta University (1865) and Clark College (1869), CAU remains a cornerstone of the city’s academic and cultural landscape, blending a legacy of social justice, innovation, and leadership that continues to shape Black excellence in the heart of Atlanta.

MacKenzie Scott

A Historic Gift to Spelman College

Spelman College, one of the nation’s most distinguished HBCUs, also received a $38 million unrestricted gift from MacKenzie Scott, her second major donation to the college in five years. This contribution builds on her 2020 gift of $20 million, bringing her total giving to $58 million—a powerful show of confidence in Spelman’s leadership and mission.

Spelman Interim President Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, C’84, described the donation as transformative: “We are profoundly grateful to MacKenzie Scott for this incredibly generous and unrestricted $38 million gift to Spelman College. The flexibility of this gift allows us to move more swiftly to strengthen the student experience, modernize our technology infrastructure, and expand financial opportunity for scholars who call Spelman home.”

The funds will target two key strategic priorities—expanding scholarships and modernizing the college’s technology infrastructure. These initiatives will enhance Spelman’s ability to prepare its scholars for a digital future while maintaining its tradition of academic excellence and social impact.

MacKenzie Scott giving spree continues

Together, these Atlanta-based investments highlight MacKenzie Scott’s deep and sustained support for HBCUs that have served as engines of opportunity for generations. Her latest gifts come as part of a broader philanthropic movement that has funneled hundreds of millions into Black colleges across the country, including Morgan State, Virginia State, Alcorn State, and Howard University.

By directing $76 million to Clark Atlanta and Spelman, MacKenzie Scott reinforces Atlanta’s historic role as a capital of Black education and empowerment—helping to ensure that both institutions continue to produce global leaders, innovators, and change-makers for decades to come.

The HBCU football postseason picture is starting to take shape, and in the SIAC, all roads lead through Albany.

Albany State has officially secured home-field advantage for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship. It defeated Savannah State 21–18 to clinch the top seed and secure hosting duties for the title game on November 15 at the Albany State University Coliseum.

Commissioner Dr. Anthony Holloman praised both the program’s consistency and the level of HBCU football competition across the league this fall. “We’ve had a very competitive football season, full of excitement, that’s coming down to the wire,” Holloman said. “Albany State has earned the honor of competing for the conference title at home. As a powerhouse HBCU program, we value the university and its surrounding community.”

That wire-tight race now shifts to the final weekend — and the battle for who will face the Golden Rams in Albany.

The Battle for the Final Spot: Benedict vs. Kentucky State

With Albany State’s spot secured, the final HBCU conference playoff race centers on Benedict College and Kentucky State University. Two SIAC programs separated by razor-thin margins and fighting for the league’s last championship berth.

Both teams face crucial road matchups in Week 10 that ultimately determine who earns the right to compete for the conference crown. Each has shown resilience all season, but because they didn’t face each other head-to-head, the league’s tiebreaker system could come into play if both close the year with identical records.

HBCU SIAC
Breaking Down the SIAC Tiebreakers

If Benedict and Kentucky State both win this weekend, the SIAC’s official tiebreaking policies will determine who advances to face Albany State. The process is detailed — and, in typical HBCU football fashion, filled with drama.

  1. Head-to-head record between tied teams.
    • Not applicable this season, as Benedict and Kentucky State did not play one another.
  2. Win percentage vs. all common opponents.
  3. Results against common opponents based on SIAC standings.
  4. Combined win percentage of all conference opponents.
  5. Higher NCAA regional ranking following regular-season play.
  6. If still tied, a random draw will be conducted by the Commissioner’s office.

That means fractions could decide this year’s SIAC finalist. Or even a coin flip. Underscoring how competitive the Division II HBCU football landscape has become.

Albany State Ready to Host, Whatever Happens

Albany State is ready to host the HBCU football spotlight regardless of which team emerges from the tiebreaker maze. The Golden Rams have built their championship résumé behind a strong defense and a balanced offensive attack that has delivered when it mattered most.

The SIAC title game will determine conference bragging rights and could also shape Division II playoff positioning as national postseason bids loom.

Championship Food Drive

Beyond the field, Albany State and the SIAC are teaming up to make a difference. The championship event will include a food drive benefiting the Albany Mission Rescue. Fans will be encouraged to bring three non-perishable food items on game day in exchange for $5 off general admission tickets.

ASU President Dr. Robert Scott said the partnership reflects the shared values that define HBCU culture.

“We believe in the power of community. Championship moments extend beyond the field — they’re built through unity, generosity, and care for one another.” It’s a reminder that in HBCU football, every championship moment is about more than a trophy. It’s about impact, pride, and community.

When the moment called for poise, Benedict College delivered like a champion. With less than 30 seconds left, quarterback Darius Ocean rolled to his right and dropped a perfect 16-yard touchdown pass to Triston Morgan, sealing a 31–27 victory over Edward Waters that kept Benedict’s unbeaten HBCU football run alive.

The win moves Benedict to 7–0 overall and 6–0 in the SIAC, the last undefeated program left in HBCU football. But this wasn’t just another win — it was a survival test against one of the fastest-rising programs in Black College Football.

HBCU Benedict College
Edward Waters’ Rise Meets the SIAC Standard

Few HBCU programs have flipped their narrative faster than Edward Waters under head coach Brian Jenkins. The Tigers, who stunned Virginia Union earlier this season, have emerged as a true SIAC threat — fast, physical, and fearless.

Saturday’s battle with Benedict College proved it. Edward Waters tied the game twice, blocked a punt for a touchdown, and took a 27–24 lead late on a 58-yard run by Johntarrious Thomas. But when the game was on the line, Benedict showed why they’re ranked No. 24 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and climbing in the national conversation.

“I knew we were going into a hostile environment,” said head coach Ron Dickerson Jr. “We just had to stay composed, wear them down, and play four full quarters.”

That’s exactly what happened. Morgan — who finished with 90 rushing yards and two total touchdowns — carried the ball seven straight times on the final drive before catching the game-winner from Ocean. Isaiah Stephens’ interception on the ensuing Hail Mary sealed it.

The Only Unbeaten Team Left in HBCU Football

The victory keeps Benedict as the only undefeated HBCU football team at any level, a testament to how smoothly Dickerson has continued the program’s success following the departure of former head coach Chennis Berry.

In just his second year, Dickerson has built on Benedict’s defensive DNA while adding an explosive offensive identity behind Ocean’s leadership. The Tigers haven’t lost a step — they’ve sharpened their edge.

Last week’s AFCA and D2Football.com polls continue to highlight that dominance. Benedict’s No. 24 national ranking puts them alongside Virginia Union (No. 17) and Johnson C. Smith (No. 24) as HBCU programs shaping the Division II playoff picture.

It’s no longer just about the CIAA vs. SIAC bragging rights. It’s about which HBCU can withstand the gauntlet to represent in the NCAA Division II Playoffs.

Albany State Awaits — The SIAC’s Main Event

Next up: a heavyweight clash for the SIAC’s top spot. Albany State (6–1, 6–0 SIAC) rolls into Charlie W. Johnson Stadium on Saturday with a chance to snatch control of the conference — and possibly end Benedict College’s perfect run.

The Golden Rams have been on a tear since a close early loss to FCS power Florida A&M, climbing toward national recognition with votes in both major Division II polls. Behind a veteran defense and a resurgent offense, they look every bit like the team that was picked to win the SIAC preseason crown.

For Benedict, it’s simple: win, and the Tigers all but punch their ticket to another conference title game — and perhaps another Top 20 national ranking.

The HBCU Division II Power Race

The latest DII Top 25 rankings tell the story of an arms race that’s become must-watch in HBCU football.

  • Virginia Union (CIAA) still sets the bar, sitting at No. 17 nationally after bouncing back from its early-season loss to Edward Waters.
  • Johnson C. Smith (CIAA) is back in the Top 25, proving its ‘Brick x Brick’ turnaround under Maurice Flowers is real.
  • Benedict (SIAC) remains the only unbeaten HBCU team in the country and continues to climb the polls.
  • Albany State and Edward Waters are both in striking distance, lurking just outside the rankings and ready to shake things up.

Together, these programs have positioned HBCUs at the center of the Division II playoff race — not just as participants but as power brokers.

The Bigger Picture

For years, the narrative around HBCU football at the Division II level centered on tradition and pride. Now it’s about national relevance. With the CIAA and SIAC producing three Top 25 teams and two more knocking on the door, the DII HBCU football landscape is as deep and competitive as ever.

Katt Williams didn’t need a mic to command the crowd in Birmingham this week — just his presence. The outspoken comedy legend, known for his razor-sharp wit and unapologetic delivery, stepped onto the stage not for a stand-up set but to receive an honorary doctorate from Miles College, an HBCU expanding its footprint in innovation and creative industries.

“It’s not every day that people get an honorary doctorate,” said Miles College President Bobbie Knight, as she called Williams to the stage. “It’s because of you and what you have done, and we just want to show you how much we appreciate you and recognize you for the work you have done.”

From Comedy Stages to College Campuses

The honor capped a weeklong visit that saw Williams connecting with Alabama leaders and locking in a partnership with the institution. The collaboration will give Miles College students opportunities to gain real-world experience through Williams’ newest venture — a film studio being developed on a portion of the former Fort McClellan military base in Anniston, Alabama.

Miles’ Chief Innovation and Growth Officer Chuck Faush said the partnership aligns with the college’s forward-thinking vision:

“President Knight’s vision is to integrate AI into every facet of the institution and this opportunity to partner with Katt Williams advances that vision,” Faush told AL.com. “Specifically, aligning with his studio development and plan in Anniston creates career ladders and provides real-world learning for our student entrepreneurs.”

“No One Could Deserve This More Than Me”

Dressed in full regalia — black robe, cap, and signature swagger — Williams accepted his Doctorate in Humane Letters with a grin and a quick quip.

“In a very short period of time, no one could deserve this more than me,” he joked, earning a roar of laughter from the audience. “It was going to take a mighty fine institution to recognize that.”

Williams went on to reflect on his journey, cleverly tying his name and the school together:

“I serve a God that insists that my cup runneth over. And those smiles that I sell for a living — those have Miles right in the middle of it.”

Building “Starships” and Student Dreams

The site of Williams’ planned studio — known locally as Starships — spans more than 90 acres of flat land and dozens of buildings, echoing the same creative ambition that turned Tyler Perry Studios into an empire. In a recent GQ interview, Williams made it clear he’s aiming for mogul status.

“It’s just not fair to put all that pressure on Tyler Perry,” he told GQ. “He can only do so much.”

Now, through his new partnership with Miles College, Williams is helping the next generation of HBCU students turn vision into action — building not just movies, but futures.

Genius Recognized

Williams’ comedic intelligence has long been part of his mystique. In his viral “Club Shay Shay” interview, he revealed he had been reading by age three, accepted into college at seven, and devoured thousands of nonfiction books before he turned twelve. Fans have often called him a “comedic genius,” but now academia has given him the title to match.

Even fellow comedian Mark Curry celebrated the moment on Instagram:

“Congratulations to my brother Cat getting a doctrine. You deserve it. You are incredible FRIEND. Thanks for all the encouragement, keeping me in the game.”

Curry’s message carried a deeper note — acknowledging Williams’ role as a motivator and mentor to peers.

HBCU Honors, Cultural Impact

By receiving his honorary doctorate from Miles College, Katt Williams joins a growing list of entertainers celebrated by HBCU institutions for their cultural influence and community contributions. His honor reflects more than his success in comedy — it recognizes his intellect, his innovation, and his investment in the next wave of Black creatives.

For Williams, whose career has taken him “miles” from open mics to movie sets, this latest chapter proves that even legends can evolve — and that in this case, HBCUs remain the heartbeat of that evolution.

When Nike unveiled the Yardrunners 6.0 Air Max ’95 collection, the sneakers immediately turned heads. But the real power of this campaign isn’t just in the design. It’s in the people. This year’s chapter in the Yardrunners story continues a full-circle tradition of HBCU alumni using their platforms to spotlight the next generation of trailblazers, creators, and leaders from their own community.

Alumni Building Alumni

The Yardrunners program began with a simple yet radical idea from two Howard University graduates, Richard Palmer and Arinze Emeagwali. They met on campus and bonded over their love of sneakers long before joining the Swoosh.

Years later, after each had built careers in marketing — Palmer with Jordan Brand and later Nike HQ, Emeagwali with Nike NYC — they reconnected to reshape how Nike engaged HBCUs.

In 2020, they pitched a concept that reimagined Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” message as “You Can’t Stop HBCUs.” Their goal was clear: to honor the people who make HBCUs thrive through authentic storytelling and design. From that idea came Yardrunners, a campaign that now serves as Nike’s bridge to the HBCU community.

Culture Carried Forward

That founding vision still guides the work today. Two HBCU alumni now lead the Yardrunners initiative within Nike. They collaborate with Black-led creative agencies such as League Twenty Two to ensure each release reflects the community’s authentic voice.

The imagery, language, and style now stretch far beyond product drops. Nike’s social channels, billboards, and editorial platforms feature real HBCU faces and stories. According to VIBE.com, the campaign’s purpose remains consistent — to elevate HBCU students and alumni through storytelling, products, and genuine collaboration.

HBCUs as the Heartbeat

This year’s Air Max ’95 Yardrunners 6.0 campaign spotlights four iconic institutions — Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University — and the people who represent their legacy.

At Florida A&M, Yardrunners captures the energy of Rattler Nation. Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching “100,” continues the school’s musical tradition.

At Spelman College, the Air Max 95 silhouette mirrors the grace and strength that define one of America’s most storied women’s colleges.

The campaign highlights Dr. Joyce Finch Johnson, Professor Emerita of Music and College Organist since 1955, whose presence has shaped the Spelman soundtrack for generations.

Eboni Ellis, founder of the Women in Hip Hop Collective, channels Spelman’s legacy of creative leadership, while Olivia Brown, flag-football captain, and Kamora Freeland, one of the youngest African American female pilots in U.S. history — and New York’s youngest licensed Black female pilot at 17 — represent how Spelman continues to open doors for the next generation of changemakers.

Legacy as a Loop

Each of these individuals carries forward what Yardrunners represents — HBCU excellence in motion. And each new campaign expands that circle.

From 2021’s HBCU dance showcase featuring Texas Southern alum Megan Thee Stallion, to 2023’s Morehouse Nike Terminator collaboration with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, to 2024’s “Started on the Yard” campaign narrated by Stephen A. Smith, Yardrunners has centered alumni who lift others as they climb.

That lineage continues with Yardrunners 6.0, which joins Nike’s growing collection of HBCU-driven releases. “When current students look back, they’ll be able to say Yardrunners was part of their HBCU experience,” said Palmer. “That means the world to us.”

Culture by the Culture

Yardrunners 6.0 isn’t a typical marketing campaign. It’s an ecosystem of alumni using creative power to spotlight others walking the same halls they once did.

From Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton to the brick yards of HBCU campuses, it shows that authenticity isn’t a trend — it’s the foundation of legacy.

Available October 11 at select retailers and on the SNKRS app October 14, Yardrunners 6.0 is more than a product drop. It’s a story of HBCU pride told by the people who live it.

The October edition of the Red Lobster Band of the Year (BOTY) competition shows both change and consistency across the HBCU Division II landscape. For the second straight month, Virginia State University’s “Trojan Explosion” reigns supreme, holding the top spot with a score of 294.2. But the rest of the rankings reveal a fierce reshuffle among the best HBCU bands in the country as the road to Atlanta draws closer.

In September, Fayetteville State, Albany State, and Miles rounded out the top four. This month, Tuskegee University’s “Crimson Pipers” vaulted into second with 285.6 points, while Miles College’s “Purple Marching Machine” climbed to third at 281.1, overtaking both Fayetteville State and Albany State. Fayetteville now sits fourth, while Florida Memorial and Winston-Salem State cracked the top six—illustrating just how competitive the Division II race has become.

Division II Top 10 Overall

1 Virginia State University – Trojan Explosion – 294.2
2 Tuskegee University – Crimson Pipers – 285.6
3 Miles College – Purple Marching Machine – 281.1
4 Fayetteville State University – Marching Bronco Express – 276.0
5 Florida Memorial University – Marching Lions – 272.1
6 Winston-Salem State University – Red Sea of Sound – 270.5
7 Benedict College – Band of Distinction – 269.5
8 Albany State University – Marching Rams Show Band – 258.5
9 Savannah State University – Powerhouse of the South – 258.5
10 Langston University – Marching Pride – 257.0

Movement Across the HBCU Band Map

The biggest story in the October rankings is the upward movement of Tuskegee and Miles, two programs that made significant strides in show design and execution. Tuskegee jumped five spots after ranking seventh in September, while Miles surged from fourth to third thanks to standout percussion and visual consistency.

Fayetteville State, which ranked No. 2 in September, remains in the top tier thanks to its continued strength in Musicality. “We are truly honored by this recognition! This will be very rewarding to our students,” said Professor Austin Chalmers, Director of Bands at Fayetteville State. The Marching Bronco Express continues to earn high marks for tone and balance—a reflection of the musical discipline that defines HBCU excellence.

Meanwhile, Florida Memorial made one of the biggest jumps of any program, rising from ninth to fifth overall. Winston-Salem State’s Red Sea of Sound remained at no. 6 but closed the scoring gap, positioning itself for a potential Top 5 finish in November.

Category Leaders

  • Musicality: Fayetteville State University
  • Pictures, Drill & Design: Virginia State University
  • Percussion: Clark Atlanta University
  • Drum Majors: Virginia State University
  • Auxiliaries: Tuskegee University

Virginia State continues to impress across multiple categories, winning Pictures, Drill & Design for a second straight month and ranking high in Drum Majors and Auxiliaries. “The Trojan Explosion” earned praise for its dynamic formations and full-bodied sound—a combination that’s kept the band in the top spot from September to October.

“The Band of the Year has had a noticeable and highly valued impact on HBCU band programs,” said Professor Dowell Taylor, BOTY Chair. “Directors tell us the evaluation process gives them a chance to analyze their programs from a new perspective, guided by professionals who understand this art form.”

HBCU Powerhouses on the Rise

For Tuskegee, the return to the upper tier is a significant statement heading into the final BOTY evaluations. The Crimson Pipers, one of the oldest HBCU marching bands in America, showcased stronger auxiliary performances and rhythmic cohesion in October.

Miles College’s Purple Marching Machine, known for its showmanship and precision percussion, continues to set a standard of consistency. Its drumline ranked No. 2 in Division II behind Clark Atlanta, helping propel the band into the top three overall.

Benedict College’s Band of Distinction and Langston University’s Marching Pride both cracked the Top 10, while Albany State and Savannah State tied at eighth—continuing one of the most entertaining rivalries in HBCU band culture.

“The monthly rankings are not just about who’s on top,” explained Don P. Roberts, BOTY Executive Consultant. “They’re designed to help bands grow through professional feedback. Show me a successful program, and I’ll show you one that’s committed to constant learning.”

Teaching, Growth, and Tradition in the HBCU Band World

Beyond the competition, the BOTY framework continues to emphasize education and growth. “The rankings also give credence to band as an academic discipline,” said Dr. Julian White, BOTY Co-Chair. “The bands are improving their musicality in an atmosphere of competitive comradery.”

This educational focus has resonated deeply with students and directors alike. Many HBCU programs use their monthly evaluations as teaching moments—highlighting measurable growth in tone, uniformity, and precision. For some, that’s more valuable than the trophy itself.

Roberts added, “The Band of the Year rankings are not a competition until Atlanta. Until then, bands are only competing with themselves.”

Looking Ahead to November and Atlanta

With one ranking period remaining before the 2025 ESPN Red Lobster Band of the Year Championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the race remains wide open. While Virginia State continues to set the pace, the distance between second and seventh is narrow enough for major shakeups in the November results. The top five bands at the end of the November rankings will be in the running to make it to the championship.

The Crimson Pipers, Purple Marching Machine, and Marching Bronco Express are all within striking distance of the top. Meanwhile, Florida Memorial, Winston-Salem State, and Benedict College have momentum on their side as the fall season winds down.

Professor Taylor summed up the spirit of the BOTY movement perfectly:

“The Band of the Year program isn’t just about who wins—it’s about preserving and advancing the HBCU band tradition. Every rehearsal, every performance, every ranking represents progress for the culture.”

Fort Valley State University (FVSU) has officially lifted the suspension of its Blue Machine Marching Band, allowing members to return to official activities following an internal investigation, university officials announced Monday evening.

The suspension was originally put in place while officials looked into allegations of hazing within the organization. Although the band has resumed operations, several members remain suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary hearings, according to the university.

“The Office of Student Conduct continues to review individual matters, and a few members remain on suspension pending the outcome of the hearing process,” FVSU said in a statement. “We appreciate the cooperation of band members and university partners throughout this process.”

Two Arrested in Connection with Hazing Allegations

According to reporting from The Macon Telegraph, two women were arrested in early October after a criminal investigation uncovered evidence of hazing within the Blue Machine Marching Band.

Arika Tolbert, 21, and Jayla Williams, 20, were both taken into custody on separate hazing charges, incident reports show. Authorities also issued a warrant for a third woman, age 25, who was not taken into custody, The Telegraph reported.

The arrests occurred on Oct. 1, according to a media arrest summary compiled by the Peach County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said the arrests were not made at or near the scene of the alleged offense.

Investigation Began After Report on September 24

The investigation began after a hazing report was filed on Sept. 24, the same day university officials suspended all activities of the Blue Machine Marching Band. The suspension remained in effect through FVSU’s homecoming week, university officials said.

After a campus police officer interviewed a student regarding the alleged incident, the information was turned over to the Fort Valley Police Department. Investigators later determined there was “sufficient evidence to support charges of hazing,” according to police and university officials cited by The Telegraph.

Details Remain Limited

As of now, authorities have not released specific details about the alleged hazing acts that led to the arrests. Neither Fort Valley State University nor local police have confirmed whether Tolbert and Williams were band members at the time of the allegations or if they remain suspended from the university.

FVSU officials said an independent administrative investigation was conducted in accordance with both university and University System of Georgia policies, as well as the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act.

“The University remains committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all students,” FVSU said. “We will continue to enforce our policies to ensure the well-being of our campus community.”

The university added that updates will be shared as the internal investigation continues.

The Division II HBCU football power struggle is heating up — and it’s playing out week after week inside the national Top 25 polls. As October rolls on, the CIAA and SIAC continue to prove why the road to the DII playoffs runs directly through HBCU territory.

Virginia Union Still Sets the Standard

Virginia Union University remains the highest-ranked HBCU in Division II football, holding firm at No. 17 in both the AFCA Coaches Poll and the D2Football.com media rankings. Their only loss came in Week Two — a 41–38 heartbreaker at Edward Waters — but since then, the Panthers have been rolling through the CIAA with renewed purpose.

Running back Curtis Allen continues to drive the offense, while quarterback RJ Rosales has kept the Panthers balanced and dangerous. The Panthers’ defense remains one of the CIAA’s most consistent units, helping them rebound from their early loss to Edward Waters.

As long as Union keeps winning, they remain the benchmark for HBCU football excellence in Division II — and a reminder that the CIAA still sets the tone for consistency.

Benedict College Joins the AFCA Top 25 — and Brings the Heat

After weeks of flying under the radar, Benedict College has officially entered the AFCA Top 25 at No. 24, emerging as the only undefeated team in all of HBCU football. Under second-year head coach Ron Dickerson Jr., the Tigers are 6–0 overall and 5–0 in the SIAC, backed by one of the stingiest defenses in Division II.

Their latest win — a 14–7 grinder over Fort Valley State — was classic Benedict football: fast start, bruising defense, and fourth-quarter control. “All we had to do was calm down and play our brand of football,” Dickerson said after the game. “We’re disciplined, physical, and focused. That’s who we are.”

Even without the flash, Benedict’s efficiency is elite. All-American returner Jaxon Williams remains a threat to score every time he touches the ball, and linebacker Israel Nwokocha continues to anchor a defense that wins in the trenches.

The Tigers now head to Jacksonville for a pivotal matchup against Edward Waters, the same team that handed Virginia Union its only loss. A win there could further solidify Benedict as the new face of SIAC dominance.

Edward Waters Fights to Stay in the Picture

Edward Waters’ momentum took a hit after a 42–14 loss at Kentucky State, knocking them out of the “receiving votes” category in the AFCA poll. Still, the Tigers (4–2) have a golden opportunity to reassert themselves this weekend against nationally ranked Benedict.

That early-season victory over Virginia Union remains one of the biggest HBCU upsets of the year — a moment that put EWU on the national radar. If they can rebound against Benedict, the Tigers could re-enter the Top 25 conversation.

JCSU Back in the Mix

After falling to Virginia Union in Richmond a few weeks ago, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) has battled its way back into national relevance. The Golden Bulls returned to the D2Football.com Top 25 this week at No. 24 following back-to-back wins, including a statement victory over Virginia State, which was previously ranked in September.

Head coach Maurice Flowers has the Bulls trending upward again, led by a defense that’s rediscovered its rhythm and an offense that’s starting to click behind a veteran quarterback, a deep receiving corps, and young talent in the backfield. With their bye week behind them, JCSU sits in a perfect position for a late-season push.

Albany State Creeping Toward the Rankings

Meanwhile, Albany State — the SIAC’s preseason favorite — is making its own noise. The Golden Rams received two votes in the AFCA poll this week after a strong start that includes a close loss to FCS powerhouse Florida A&M. At 5–1, they’re quietly building steam and have a massive opportunity ahead: a road showdown at Benedict that could define the rest of the SIAC season.

A Testament to DII HBCU Football’s Depth

The presence of Virginia Union, Benedict, and Johnson C. Smith in national polls and Albany State and Edward Waters pushing for recognition underscores one undeniable truth: the quality of football at HBCU programs in Division II is strong.

Both the CIAA and SIAC have produced teams capable of competing nationally, with elite coaching, next-level defenses, and fan bases that bring unmatched energy every weekend.

As Benedict looks to stay perfect, Virginia Union keeps chasing more history, and JCSU continues to prove its mettle, the DII HBCU race is no longer a sidebar — it’s the main story in college football’s most competitive division.

Where the Rankings Stand

Here’s how the national picture looks as of Week 6. The latest D2Football.com and AFCA Division II polls showcase just how far HBCU programs have come — with Virginia Union, Johnson C. Smith, and Benedict all carrying the banner for Black college football on the national stage. The CIAA and SIAC aren’t just fighting for conference titles anymore — they’re shaping the entire Division II playoff landscape.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The HBCU Puerto Rico Bowl featuring Kentucky State will NOT be taking place outside of the US mainland. The change comes due to field conditions and concerns for student-athlete safety, according to a release from Kentucky State Athletics.

The HBCU had planned to make history with a trip to Puerto Rico for its game against Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, October 18, 2025. However, both institutions mutually agreed that the conditions were not suitable for competition. The matchup will now be held at Franklin Pierce’s home field, marking the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Safety Over Spectacle

“Protecting our student-athletes is always our first priority,” said Kentucky State Athletic Director Grant Stepp. “While this is a disappointing outcome, it’s the right decision. We appreciate everyone who worked to make this event possible and remain committed to creating unique experiences for our student-athletes and fans.”

The announcement puts an unfortunate pause on what would have been one of the most unique events in HBCU football this fall. The planned Puerto Rico trip was designed to spotlight Kentucky State on an international stage, expanding the reach of HBCU athletics beyond the mainland United States. Despite the cancellation, Stepp emphasized that Kentucky State remains open to future opportunities to play in Puerto Rico once conditions improve.

Thorobreds Ride High After Homecoming Win

The decision was announced shortly after the HBCU’s impressive 42–14 Homecoming victory over Edward Waters University. Freshman running back Chad Elzy Jr. led the way for Kentucky State with 154 rushing yards and three touchdowns, helping the Thorobreds control the game from start to finish. Quarterbacks Torrence Bardell and Denim Johnson combined for 252 passing yards and two touchdowns, while receiver Jon McCall posted 162 receiving yards and a score.

Defensively, Navy Curry anchored the unit with eight tackles and a forced fumble as Kentucky State dominated in all phases.

HBCU football in Puerto Rico will have to wait

With the Puerto Rico trip off the table, Kentucky State’s focus now shifts to its matchup in Rindge, New Hampshire, on Friday, October 17, at 7:00 p.m. Additional ticket details for the rescheduled game are expected later this week.

Though the dream of playing in Puerto Rico will have to wait, the HBCU remains poised to keep its strong momentum going into the final stretch of the season.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Another week, another win — and still, Benedict College keeps doing it quietly. The Tigers, under second-year head coach Ron Dickerson Jr., improved to 6–0 overall and 5–0 in the SIAC, remaining the only undefeated team in HBCU football after a hard-fought 14–7 victory over Fort Valley State on Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

It wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t easy. But it was Benedict football — tough, poised, and powered by one of the best defenses in the SIAC.

Lightning Start, Defensive Finish

The tone was set immediately. All-American returner Jaxon Williams — already the nation’s leader in kickoff return average — opened the game with an 88-yard touchdown return, his second of the season, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

Fort Valley State, just 1–5 on the season, showed more fight than its record suggests. The Wildcats tied the game late in the second quarter on a 46-yard touchdown strike, forcing Benedict to lean on its discipline and defense for the rest of the day.

Benedict’s offense was limited to a season-low of 169 total yards, but its defense responded in kind — holding Fort Valley to just 78 rushing yards and 222 total yards, which was only five shy of the Wildcats’ season low.

Trick Play Tilts the Game

With the score locked at 7–7 midway through the third quarter, Dickerson’s staff dug into the playbook. On a double-reverse pass, quarterback Darius Ocean found Williams again, this time on a short screen that turned into a 29-yard touchdown after a convoy of blockers paved the way.

That was all Benedict would need. The defense clamped down — as it has all season — holding Fort Valley to four straight three-and-outs to start the second half and never allowing them past midfield.

Defense Wins Again

Veteran linebacker Israel Nwokocha led the charge with 10 tackles, 3.5 for loss, and 2.5 sacks, while defensive end Isaiah Stephens sealed the game with back-to-back plays that defined the Tigers’ grit: a 16-yard sack on third down and an interception on the next series to close it out.

Punter Kolten Ford was quietly clutch, averaging 42.2 yards on eight punts, including a booming 66-yarder and four that pinned Fort Valley inside its own 20. In a field-position game, Ford’s leg was a weapon.

“We Just Had to Be Who We Are”

After the win, head coach Ron Dickerson Jr. praised his team’s toughness but made it clear — they weren’t satisfied with simply staying unbeaten.

“We just had to calm down and play our brand of football,” Dickerson said. “Fort Valley’s a good team, but we had to stop playing their style and get back to who we are — disciplined, physical, and focused.”

That identity has carried over seamlessly in Dickerson’s second season at the helm, keeping Benedict among the most consistent programs in all of Division II.

“It’s about four quarters,” he added. “We condition for it, we prepare for it, and when the fourth quarter comes, we want to be the team still standing strong.”

Despite being the lone undefeated team in HBCU football, Benedict College continues to fly under the radar nationally — something that doesn’t seem to bother Dickerson in the least.

“Rankings don’t win games,” he said. “Our players, our coaches, and the work we put in every week — that’s what matters.”

The Road Ahead

Next up, Benedict College heads to Jacksonville to face Edward Waters (4–2, 3–1 SIAC) in what could be one of the season’s defining matchups in the SIAC and DII HBCU football.

“We’ll correct what we need to from this game,” Dickerson said, “and get ready for a great football team. The mission stays the same — go 1–0 every week.”

At 6–0, the Tigers aren’t just chasing a conference crown — they’re building a winning culture under coach Dickerson. And while the spotlight still hasn’t found them, HBCU football’s last undefeated team doesn’t need it. Their record speaks loud enough.

ATLANTA — The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) has issued a wave of suspensions and institutional fines following the postgame brawl between Fort Valley State and Central State that overshadowed last Saturday’s HBCU Homecoming showdown.

The announcement comes less than 48 hours after the two programs clashed on the field and in a heated postgame altercation that went viral across social media. What began as a competitive SIAC matchup quickly ended with disciplinary measures that will impact both teams moving forward.

“Acts of unsportsmanlike conduct have no place in intercollegiate athletics or within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference,” said SIAC Commissioner Anthony Holloman, Ed.D. “I am extremely disappointed that this event has overshadowed what was otherwise a very competitive football game.”

HBCU Homecoming SIAC
Conference Investigation Leads to Wide-Ranging Penalties

After conducting a comprehensive review, the SIAC determined that both institutions violated the league’s code of ethics and conduct. As a result, 20 student-athletes—nine from Fort Valley State and 11 from Central State—have been suspended for their next contest. Both head coaches will also serve a one-game suspension.

In addition, the SIAC has fined both institutions an undisclosed amount in accordance with conference bylaws and sports regulations. The league reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for unsportsmanlike behavior and said it will work with both HBCU institutions to strengthen policies to deter similar incidents in the future.

Game Recap: Central State Spoils Fort Valley Homecoming

Before the brawl took center stage, Central State pulled off one of its biggest wins of the season — an 18–14 road upset over Fort Valley State in front of 8,000 fans at Wildcat Stadium.

Fort Valley opened strong behind quarterback Jai’Que Hart. He connected with Paul Burkly for a 13-yard touchdown, followed by a 70-yard strike to J.T. Pendleton that gave the Wildcats a 14–6 lead after the first quarter of homecoming.

But the Marauder defense flipped the game in the second quarter. Domonique Davis II intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it for a touchdown. That trimmed the deficit to 14–12 at halftime. The turning point came in the third quarter, when Travion Searcy blocked a Fort Valley field goal and raced 78 yards for a score. That gave Central State its first lead of the day at 18–14, a lead they never relinquished.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Davis II anchored a ferocious CSU defense with nine tackles, two interceptions, and a tackle-for-loss. Searcy added an interception and the special teams touchdown, while the Marauder front recorded four sacks. Despite being outgained in total yards, Central State’s opportunistic defense forced four interceptions and scored two non-offensive touchdowns.

What’s Next

The suspensions will affect both programs heading into the upcoming SIAC matchups. The league emphasized that it will continue to enforce strict accountability while working with member institutions to preserve the integrity of competition across HBCU athletics.

An HBCU community is grappling with a serious situation as Fort Valley State University confirmed that its Blue Machine Marching Band will remain suspended. The decision follows arrests tied to hazing. The City of Fort Valley Police Department announced it had concluded its criminal investigation and found enough evidence to support charges.

The Statement from Fort Valley State

Fort Valley State stressed that student safety is its top priority.

“The City of Fort Valley Police Department has concluded its criminal investigation regarding the FVSU Blue Machine Marching Band and has found sufficient evidence to support charges of hazing. As a result, arrests have been made in connection with the case.

The University is engaged in an independent administrative investigation in accordance with FVSU policy, USG policy and the Stop Campus Hazing Act. The ongoing process is comprehensive and involves additional steps beyond the investigation. Until the process is complete, the band will remain under suspension and will not perform this weekend.

We understand the seriousness of this situation and the impact it has on our community, particularly during Homecoming season. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all our students and the entire Wildcat community.

We will provide additional updates as necessary as the internal investigation progresses.”

Impact on Fort Valley State Homecoming

The suspension comes at a critical time. Fort Valley State’s homecoming is set for October 4 against Central State. At an HBCU, homecoming is more than football. It is a week filled with alumni pride, student life, and cultural celebrations.

The Blue Machine Marching Band usually provides the soundtrack for the entire week. Its absence will be obvious. Without the band, tailgates, pep rallies, and halftime traditions will lack one of the school’s most visible symbols of spirit.

Fort Valley State HBCU

A Longstanding Issue for HBCUs

Hazing continues to be a major challenge for colleges nationwide. For HBCUs, the issue is especially significant because bands and Greek organizations are central to campus culture. Fort Valley State’s case highlights the difficult balance between tradition, community, and safety.

The Stop Campus Hazing Act, cited in the school’s statement, seeks to improve reporting and accountability across higher education. HBCUs are not exempt from these challenges. Previous hazing cases have disrupted bands, athletic programs, and fraternities. Each one sparks new calls for reform, even as alumni and students debate how to preserve beloved traditions.

Community Reaction

For alumni and supporters, the timing is especially painful. Homecoming season is when HBCU campuses shine brightest. Bands like the Blue Machine are more than performers. They are cultural institutions that link generations of students.

Many in the Wildcat community, however, see the suspension as necessary. The police investigation confirmed that the matter extends beyond campus discipline. By aligning with both University System of Georgia policy and the federal Stop Campus Hazing Act, Fort Valley State showed its commitment to accountability.

Broader HBCU Impact

The outcome of this case will resonate across the HBCU landscape. Leaders at other institutions will look closely at Fort Valley State’s response as they face their own hazing challenges. Administrators are under pressure to prove that safety comes before tradition.

HBCU bands are celebrated nationwide, often going viral for their halftime shows. They serve as cultural ambassadors far beyond their campuses. Still, Fort Valley State’s hazing scandal underscores how misconduct can endanger these institutions and their legacy.

Looking Ahead

Fort Valley State’s homecoming will proceed, but without the familiar sounds of the Blue Machine Marching Band. The atmosphere will feel different—quieter and more reflective. Students and alumni expecting brass and percussion will instead confront the reality of hazing’s consequences.

The university has promised more updates as its internal review continues. For now, the band remains suspended. The Wildcats are shifting focus toward safety and accountability during one of the most important weekends on the HBCU calendar.

This is a defining moment for Fort Valley State. The school was recently ranked as the number one public HBCU in Georgia, a point of pride for the community. Yet its response to hazing will also shape how this chapter is remembered. Transparency, accountability, and student protection will determine the lasting impact.

An HBCU marching band has been put on ice as Fort Valley State University (FVSU) has suspended its Blue Machine Marching Band due to hazing allegations, just days before the school’s highly anticipated homecoming celebration on October 4 against Central State University.

FVSU’s Executive Director of Marketing and Communications, Britney Smith, confirmed the decision to WGXA, noting that the university ordered the band to “suspend all activity due to allegations of hazing.” Smith emphasized that Fort Valley State takes hazing seriously and that student safety is the school’s top priority.

“Fort Valley State University has directed the Blue Machine Marching Band to suspend all activity due to allegations of hazing. FVSU takes acts of hazing and allegations of hazing seriously and the matter is being investigated. The safety and well-being of our students and Wildcat community are always our top priority,” Smith wrote in a statement.

Fort Valley State

The university’s Office of Legal and Government Affairs is leading the investigation. At this time, no further details about the hazing allegations have been released.

The timing is especially significant. FVSU is preparing for its annual homecoming week, with thousands of alumni and supporters expected back in Peach County. The Wildcats are set to face Central State on October 4, but the suspension of the band has raised questions about how the festivities will be impacted. Adding to the context, the Wildcats also traditionally play a high-profile rivalry game against Tuskegee University, one of the more anticipated contests on their schedule.

This development comes as Fort Valley State was recently ranked the number one public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Georgia by U.S. News and World Report.

]]>
The national spotlight on HBCU football in Division II continues to shine. Still, the balance of power shifts inside the CIAA as the Top 25 polls reset following a pivotal weekend. Virginia Union University, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Virginia State University, and Edward Waters University are all shaping the narrative — whether inside the CIAA race or, in Edward Waters’ case, as an SIAC program gaining national recognition.

Virginia Union Rises to the Top Among HBCU Programs

Fresh off their ranked clash against Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union has emerged as the top-ranked HBCU program in both the D2Football.com and AFCA Division II polls. The Panthers’ 28-10 victory over JCSU not only cemented their place in the Top 25 but also pushed them up to No. 21 in both the D2Football.com and the AFCA poll.

Union has leaned heavily on running back Curtis Allen, who has piled up 460 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through three games. Quarterback RJ Rosales has added 427 yards and three scores through the air, while receivers Keon Davis (161 yards, 1 TD) and Ricky Key Jr. (97 yards) have stretched the field. Defensively, the Panthers are giving up just 18 points per game with 20.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

But the Panthers’ résumé comes with an asterisk: their only blemish is a 41-38 road loss to Edward Waters, an SIAC program that stunned VUU in Jacksonville. The Tigers’ win is the only defeat for Union this season, proving that the road to national respect in Division II HBCU football is starting to run through more than one conference.

JCSU Falls, but Not Forgotten

The loss to Union cost Johnson C. Smith its place in the polls. After the Richmond matchup, the Golden Bulls dropped out of both Top 25s. Still, they picked up 13 votes in the AFCA poll, showing that despite their slide, pollsters believe in their talent and potential.

They’ll look to bounce back at Homecoming this week against Bluefield State as another crucial road game looms at Virginia State on Oct. 5, giving JCSU another chance to re-enter the national conversation.

Virginia State Enters the Picture

If Union is steady and JCSU is regrouping, then Virginia State is surging. The Trojans cracked No. 23 in the D2Football.com poll this week after edging Winston-Salem State by a single point.

In the AFCA poll, VSU remains outside the Top 25, but they’re clearly on the radar, especially given their upcoming tests: a road trip to Fayetteville State followed by a high-stakes home date with JCSU.

Edward Waters: SIAC Spoiler with National Impact

Edward Waters may not play in the CIAA, but their impact can’t be ignored. The Tigers’ dramatic victory over Virginia Union in the Unity Classic was more than just a program milestone — it reshaped the program’s identity within the Division II HBCU landscape. Their 3-0 start included that game-winning field goal, making EWU the only team to defeat Union this fall.

While they’re not in the Top 25, Edward Waters earned a vote in this week’s AFCA poll, showing that national observers are taking notice of the SIAC upstart.

A CIAA Race with National Stakes

Just a week ago, the conversation centered on two nationally ranked HBCUs colliding when Union and JCSU met in Richmond. Now, the picture has widened: Virginia State is in the mix, JCSU is fighting to regain traction, and Edward Waters has emerged from the SIAC.

The CIAA title race is always tense. But as the D2Football.com and AFCA polls show, it’s now a national storyline.

Nike is once again shining a spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its latest Yardrunners project. This time, the Swoosh pulls up with a bold collection of Air Max ’95s dedicated to four iconic HBCU institutions.

A Yardrunners Tradition Expands

Since 2020, Nike has shown love to HBCUs through the Yardrunners program, which was created to celebrate the legacies of HBCU institutions and the people they serve with footwear designed by alumni. On its fifth anniversary, the program is marking the occasion with what sneakernews.com calls its “most ambitious release yet:” a full lineup of four Air Max ’95s, each paying tribute to a different HBCU.

For Holiday 2025, the Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack highlights Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida A&M University, and Norfolk State University. Each design pulls from school history, color palettes, and mascots—turning sneakers into wearable symbols of HBCU pride.

Earlier HBCU Releases by Nike

This new drop follows several high-profile collaborations. For example, Clark Atlanta University received its own Nike Dunk colorway in 2022. Howard University later showcased a Jordan Brand Air Jordan 4 Player Exclusive, complete with custom “HU” lace dubraes and school crest.

In addition, the Yardrunners 3.0 collection featured Dunk colorways and apparel timed with HBCU homecomings. The Terminator High HBCU Pack arrived in 2023, while Virginia Union University debuted an Air Force 1 release in 2024.

Details Behind the Drop

Morehouse pairs tiger-inspired red and black stripes with bold accents.
FAMU takes on green reptilian textures, a clear nod to the Rattler.
Spelman celebrates the jaguar with spotted dark and light blue suede.
Norfolk State opts for understated yellow hairy suede, representing Mr. Spartan.

Every sneaker comes dressed with school letter logos and founding years on the tongues, custom insoles with full school names, and even graphic treatments on the visible Air cushioning that mirror each pair’s overlay patterns—with Norfolk State being the lone exception. These extra design elements push the drop into collectors’ territory, blending heritage with modern sneaker aesthetics.

When and Where to Cop

The Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack will be available during the Holiday 2025 season through Nike.com and select retailers. The retail price will be $190 per pair.

From Brick x Brick to Thursday night lights, Darius Ocean has always thrived when the cameras are on. The transfer quarterback, once the face of Johnson C. Smith University’s (JCSU) 8–0 start and a star of the HBCU Gameday Brick x Brick docuseries has brought that same energy to Columbia as the former Golden Bull led Benedict College to a 45–24 win over Tuskegee under the ESPN Thursday night spotlight.

Ocean takes control

Down 17–7 in the second quarter, Benedict flipped the script with 38 unanswered points. Ocean went 19-of-29 for 213 yards and four touchdowns, distributing the ball with the same calm, confident rhythm that made him a leader in his only year at JCSU. His 28-yard strike to Jaxon Williams gave Benedict its first lead, and with five seconds left in the half, he found Malachi Jones for a two-yard dagger that stretched the margin to 28–17.

Jones (5–90–1) and Williams (4–47–1) thrived as Ocean spread the ball around, while the run game balanced the attack with 157 yards, paced by Triston Morgan (12–58) and David Smith (6–54, TD). Defensively, Israel Nwokocha racked up eight tackles, including three for loss, and Cam Williams added a 33-yard interception return.

“Get the playmakers involved” — Dickerson’s blueprint

Head coach Ron Dickerson Jr. knew his offense needed a breakout after scraping together only 10 points in each of the first two games. “We just had to make some plays, doing some things simple, getting the playmakers involved, not over being zealous,” he said. The simplified plan paid off in a big way, with Ocean orchestrating drives that put the Tigers in control.

Dickerson, though, kept the focus on growth during the postgame. “We got a great quarterback room, we’re very young on offense, we got a good team. Just got to keep playing together as a we group every week.”

From Charlotte to Columbia — same steady star

HBCU fans first got to know Ocean during JCSU’s 8-0 run on season Two of Brick x Brick, the ‘HBCU Hard Knocks’ docuseries that follows the Charlotte, NC HBCU. Before that, Ocean began his career at FBS program Western Kentucky, giving him big-game experience that translated quickly when he moved to the Division II HBCU ranks. After transferring to Benedict, he continues that story in Columbia, bringing the same steady presence under center that made him a standout in Charlotte.

Dickerson’s tenure so far

When Chennis Berry left for South Carolina State after leading Benedict to SIAC glory, Dickerson Jr. stepped in to stabilize a proud program. His debut 2024 season was about weathering the transition and keeping Benedict competitive. In year two, the Tigers look like they’re turning the corner. This 3–0 start, capped by a nationally televised win over Tuskegee on ESPN, feels like the signature moment that signals the Dickerson era is starting to take shape.

What’s next

At 3–0 (2–0 SIAC), Benedict isn’t just winning — they’re climbing back into the SIAC championship conversation. Next up is a road showdown with Clark Atlanta (Sept. 27, 3 p.m.), another chance for Ocean and company to prove their rise is more than just a hot start.

If Brick x Brick showed fans the making of an HBCU star, Thursday night on ESPN showed how Ocean is writing his next chapter — and how Benedict College, under Dickerson, might be building its own docuseries-worthy season.

One of the most successful coaches in recent HBCU football history Brian Jenkins has gone from offensive coordinator to interim head coach, and now to the permanent leader of Edward Waters University football in roughly two monts. EWU President & CEO Dr. A. Zachary Faison announced the move Friday on the Jacksonville campus, solidifying Jenkins’ role moving forward.

Building the Program

Dr. Faison has steadily elevated both the HBCU and its athletic profile. In 2021, he transitioned the Tigers from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division II and restored membership in the SIAC after decades away. To guide the program, Faison hired proven winner Toriano Morgan, who in turn brought Jenkins aboard.

When Morgan accepted an opportunity this summer to return to his alma mater, Tennessee State, as co-offensive coordinator under new head coach Reggie Barlow, Jenkins was elevated to interim head coach on July 16.

Early Success and Community Impact

Jenkins has already sparked fresh pride across Jacksonville. The Tigers sit atop the SIAC at 3-0 for the first time in school history. Having picked up a thrilling 41-38 win over 13th-ranked Virginia Union in the inaugural Unity Classic on Sept. 13. That victory, sealed by a walk-off field goal, was broadcast nationally on ESPN+.

Facing a Familiar Foe

The timing of Jenkins’ official hiring is notable. It comes on the eve of a trip to Daytona to face his former team, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. The matchup at Municipal Stadium pits a red-hot Edward Waters team, buoyed by several Division I transfers including quarterback Noah Bodden, against an 0-3 Bethune-Cookman squad led by Raymond Woodie.

Jenkins, however, is treating it like any other game.

“If they’re looking for a dogfight, we’ll be ready,” Jenkins said. “We prepare for every opponent the same way. It just so happens this one is Bethune-Cookman. There’s no added significance—it’s about preparation and execution.”

Coaching Résumé

With nearly three decades of experience, Brian Jenkins has built a reputation as one of the most accomplished HBCU coaches of his era:

  • Edward Waters (2023–present): In his first season as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, Jenkins led the Tigers to their winningest season since 2018, highlighted by victories over rivals Florida Memorial and Allen in their first year competing in NCAA Division II.
  • Alabama State (2014–17): Compiled a 10-17 record, earned wins in both the 92nd and 93rd Turkey Day Classics, and captured a Magic City Classic victory over Alabama A&M.
  • Bethune-Cookman (2010–14): Posted a remarkable 46-14 record (.767). He won or shared four MEAC titles, earned three FCS playoff berths, and captured two HBCU national championships. Jenkins’ teams produced two 10-win seasons, and they went 18-0 in MEAC play from 2011-13. Defeated rival Florida A&M four straight years. He was named MEAC Coach of the Year three times and AFCA FCS Region II Coach of the Year twice.
  • Assistant Coaching Stops: Spent time at Rutgers under Greg Schiano, Louisiana, Bowling Green, Eastern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and in NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy.

Player and Personal Life

A Fort Lauderdale native, Jenkins was a standout wide receiver and running back at the University of Cincinnati. He graduated in 1993 as the program’s all-time leader in kickoff returns and return yardage. Jenkins holds degrees in social work and education.

He is the proud father of daughters Brittany and Briana, and son Brian Jr., a wide receiver at Alabama A&M.

Brian Jenkins was at the helm of the Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) Wildcats the last time they won conference and national championships. Since then, Jenkins has moved on and even stepped out of coaching for a period. In 2023, Toriano Morgan, head coach of the Edward Waters Tigers, brought along Jenkins to help rebuild the HBCU program as it stepped up from NAIA to NCAA D-II.

Raymond Woodie’s Rebuilding Effort at B-CU

Raymond Woodie was brought to B-CU after Terry Sims left the HBCU. Between Woodie’s hire and Sims’ departure, there was a delay and a virtual “circus” surrounding the B-CU campus with the engagement of NFL Hall of Famer Ed Reed. Woodie’s hiring squelched the noise, and he began rebuilding the B-CU program.

Anchoring the HBCU since 2021 has been former NBA All-Star Reggie Theus. Serving dual roles as Director of Athletics and head basketball coach, Theus has acquired donations, built up infrastructure, and, according to coaches, has supported his colleagues in the department with what they need to be successful. Theus helped build an on-campus dedicated turf football field, enhanced the weight room, and built a locker room for the football program. Before Theus, none of these things were available to the student-athletes.

Woodie’s tenure as head coach has not been complimentary of the success the Wildcat nation had grown accustomed to. In his third season as head coach, the Wildcats have managed only five wins. To be fair to Woodie, he has faced the FIU Panthers, Miami Hurricanes, and 2024 MEAC Champion South Carolina State Bulldogs. There were no easy paths to early success with the 2025 slate.

Wildcats Struggle to Reclaim Success

The Wildcats must win this Saturday at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach. B-CU will host EWU at 3:00 PM, and this game is not a cakewalk either.

The Tigers are coming off a monumental upset of the Virginia Union Panthers 41-38 on ESPN+. Showing that they have the grit it takes to be a champion. Brian Jenkins’ championship stamp is all over this Edward Waters team. Even so, Jenkins downplays his return to Daytona Beach.

“If they’re looking for a dog fight, then we’re going to be ready,” Jenkins said. We’re treating this game just as we treat every other game and preparing for it the same. We’re not making a big deal out of it. It’s a football game. We know we have an opponent to play, and it’s Bethune-Cookman, so there’s no specialness to it for me or my team.”

For over twenty years, Quinn Gray held the FAMU record for the most passing yards in FAMU history. In 2020, he was inducted into the FAMU Sports Hall of Fame for his amazing career as a quarterback under Black College Football Hall of Fame coach Billy Joe. Saturday, Quinn Gray returned to Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium as head coach of the surging Albany State Golden Rams of the SIAC.

Return of a Rattler

The previously undefeated Golden Rams were looking to play spoiler for the Rattlers’ home opener. ASU would come out firing behind the arm of veteran quarterback Isaiah Knowles. The Golden Rams took a 14-3 lead on FAMU in a packed stadium.

Coach James Colzie III steadied his Rattlers, who ended up winning 33-28, avoiding the upset from the team picked in the preseason to be the SIAC champions. The Rattlers posted over 450 yards of offense in the win.

FAMU starting quarterback RJ Johnson led the Rattlers with 270 yards passing. In the first half, when the Rattlers were stagnant on offense, Jett Peddy came in to relieve him and was moving the Rattler offense. However, in the second half, Johnson would come out on fire and lead scoring drives for the Rattlers to take the lead. Johnson completed 17-of-22 passes, with at least three dropped balls by his wide receivers.

New LED Lights

FAMU unveiled its new LED light system, keeping in line with college football stadiums nationwide. The rowdy crowd, including a few thousand Albany State fans, their band, royal court, and cheerleaders, went wild in the third quarter as FAMU unveiled its Homecoming Concert Lineup. The lineup includes Gherbo, PartyNextDoor, Bossman DLow, Boosie, and Latto. This lineup will keep FAMU’s Lawson Center rocking during homecoming week.

The Rattlers will enjoy an off week to prepare for a run for the rest of the season, starting with Alabama State on Sept. 27. The Golden Rams will get back to work on Sept. 27, as they host Allen University at the Albany State Coliseum.

GRAMBLING, La. — Grambling State needed every ounce of resilience — and one unforgettable defensive play — to survive a major upset scare. Defensive back Tyrell Raby returned a fumble 83 yards for a walk-off touchdown in overtime, giving the SWAC program a 37-31 win over Division II HBCU Kentucky State at Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.

The Thorobreds nearly pulled off the shocker, outplaying stretches of the HBCU contest and forcing the SWAC blueblood into comeback mode before falling short in heartbreaking fashion.

Thorobreds Strike First

Kentucky State opened with a bang. Quarterback Denim Johnson engineered an 11-play, 69-yard drive capped by his three-yard rushing score. Running back Chad Elzy punched in another from six yards out, and suddenly the Thorobreds were up 14-0.

Even after Grambling responded with a field goal and a touchdown from C’zavian Teasett to Keith Jones Jr., Johnson answered again, hitting Jon McCall for an 11-yard score. KSU entered halftime with a 21-17 lead, powered by Elzy’s 58 rushing yards and McCall’s eight catches for 81 yards.

Teasett Puts Grambling on His Back

Grambling’s sophomore QB C’zavian Teasett was the difference-maker. He completed 13 of 27 passes for 228 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 99 yards and two scores on the ground. His third-quarter strike to Jones Jr. (96 yards, 2 TDs) gave the Tigers their first lead at 24-21.

But mistakes gave KSU life. A muffed punt set up a 33-yard touchdown from backup QB Torrence Bardell to Darius Cyprian, and after recovering an onside kick, Leland Gantz drilled a 43-yard field goal to put the Thorobreds ahead 31-24 with under two minutes left.

HBCU SWAC Grambling Kentucky State
Late Heroics and Overtime Drama

With the season hanging in the balance, Teasett engineered an eight-play, 75-yard drive, finishing it himself with a 17-yard touchdown run with just 10 seconds on the clock. That tied the game at 31-31 and sent it to overtime.

Kentucky State advanced to the Grambling 17-yard line in the extra frame before disaster struck. Raby forced and recovered a fumble, then sprinted 83 yards for the decisive score, sealing a 37-31 win and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

By the Numbers
  • Total Offense: Grambling 458 yards, Kentucky State 356
  • Rushing Leaders: Teasett (9 carries, 99 yards, 2 TDs); KSU’s Jaylen Middleton (65 yards) and Elzy (58 yards, TD)
  • Passing Leaders: Teasett (228 yards, 2 TDs); Johnson (146 yards, 1 TD) and Bardell (75 yards, 1 TD)
  • Receiving Leaders: Jones Jr. (96 yards, 2 TDs); McCall (81 yards, TD)
  • Defense: Raby (6 tackles, forced fumble, 83-yard game-winner); KSU’s Mataye Youman led all tacklers with nine
  • Third Downs: Both teams were 7-of-15
  • Time of Possession: KSU 32:54, GSU 27:05
What’s Next

Grambling State (2-1) escapes with a win but faces questions after nearly dropping one to a DII HBCU foe. The Tigers will host East Texas A&M next Saturday at 6 p.m. on SWAC TV.

The Thorobreds (1-2) will continue road play against conference opponent Morehouse on Sept. 20. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. in Atlanta.

Jacksonville, Fla. — Edward Waters flipped the script on HBCU football Saturday night. The Tigers stunned No. 13 Virginia Union, 41-38, in the inaugural Unity Classic, capped by freshman kicker Ryan Gagne’s 35-yard game-winner as time expired. The kick touched off a frenzy at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium and pushed EWU to 3-0 for the first time in program history.

Offense Delivers Knockout Punch

Quarterback Noah Bodden looked in control, throwing for 283 yards on 19-of-35 passing. He added a touchdown and, just as importantly, avoided sacks and turnovers against a physical Virginia Union front.

The Tigers’ ground game provided balance. Johntarrious Thomas bruised his way to 100 yards and a score, while Brady Tillman ripped off a 70-yard touchdown sprint down the sideline, stretching the lead to 28-17.

Through the air, Izaiah Jean-Baptiste was the difference-maker with 112 yards and two touchdowns, including a gadget-play strike from receiver Torey Morrison to break a 14-14 tie. Senior wideout Makai Lovett made three catches for 91 yards, none bigger than a 42-yard grab in the final seconds that set up Gagne’s winner.

Special Teams Swing Momentum

Special teams flipped the game late. Kieren Jackson took a kickoff 90 yards to the house, giving Edward Waters a 38-31 lead and energizing the home crowd. Gagne was perfect all night, hitting all five extra points and both field goals — the last one sending the Tigers into the record books.

Defense Stands Tall

The Tigers’ defense bent but didn’t break. Travis McNichols finished with five tackles, while Rodney Williams and Trevon French came up with key second-half stops. Jaylen Brown added a forced fumble to slow Virginia Union’s high-powered attack and buy time for the offense.

A Statement for EWU

The win didn’t just make history — it sent a message. Edward Waters, led by interim coach Brian Jenkins, knocked off a nationally ranked HBCU opponent in dramatic fashion.

“This is a historic night for Edward Waters University football and for our community,” Jenkins said. “Our players showed heart, resilience, and belief in one another. To win the inaugural Unity Classic in this fashion — it’s something our student-athletes and fans will remember forever.”

What’s Next

The Tigers now take their unbeaten run on the road in a matchup laced with storylines. Jenkins returns to his old stomping grounds when Edward Waters faces Bethune-Cookman University next Saturday. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. ET, with coverage live on HBCU GO.

The HBCU spotlight shines on Virginia Union and Edward Waters this weekend in a pivotal CIAA vs. SIACmatchup. Both Virginia Union and Edward Waters enter this contest knowing it could shape the story of their seasons, their playoff outlooks, and the national conversation in Black college football.

CIAA vs. SIAC Stakes

Whenever the CIAA and SIAC collide, it’s bigger than one game. Fans see it as a chance to compare two historic conferences that anchor HBCU football in the East and South. This matchup also carries NCAA Division II playoff weight. Out-of-conference wins against quality opponents often decide at-large bids in the super region standings. For Virginia Union, beating a surging SIAC team could strengthen their playoff résumé. For Edward Waters, knocking off a CIAA contender would boost their profile and show they belong in postseason talks.

What It Means for Virginia Union

Virginia Union has built its reputation on toughness, tradition, and consistency. But the Panthers also face pressure to prove they belong in the upper tier of HBCU football in 2025. This game doubles as an early playoff test. A win strengthens their résumé before CIAA play intensifies. A loss, however, would damage their at-large hopes and raise questions about their ability to handle physical, rising programs outside their league.

What It Means for Edward Waters

For Edward Waters, this is an opportunity to show the nation their early-season surge is real. The Tigers opened strong in SIAC play, but a non-conference victory over a CIAA powerhouse would mark a statement win. It would elevate their postseason profile in the regional standings and build legitimacy for a program still establishing itself as a consistent playoff contender.

Keys to the Game
  • Virginia Union must control the trenches and avoid turnovers.
  • Edward Waters has to finish red-zone drives and limit explosive plays.
  • Special teams could swing the game, especially in a matchup with playoff stakes.
  • Whichever side controls field position will gain the edge in what should be a tight contest.
Where to Watch

Fans can stream Virginia Union vs. Edward Waters live on ESPN+. Both schools will also provide live coverage through their athletics websites, including video and real-time stats. That makes this clash accessible for HBCU fans nationwide eager to see CIAA vs. SIAC bragging rights and playoff implications on the line.

What’s Next

After this matchup, Virginia Union returns home to face Johnson C. Smith on September 20, aiming to solidify CIAA control. Edward Waters travels to Daytona Beach to meet Bethune-Cookman, a test against an FCS program that will further sharpen their postseason profile.

Why It Matters to HBCU Fans

This game isn’t just about wins and losses. It’s about conferences and playoff credibility. When Virginia Union and Edward Waters collide, HBCU fans tune in to see which program strengthens its résumé for November. These matchups fuel debates, shape postseason projections, and remind us why HBCU football Saturdays matter.

Looking Ahead

Whether it’s Virginia Union asserting CIAA strength or Edward Waters claiming a breakthrough SIAC moment, this game will ripple through the DII playoff picture. Both programs will leave Jacksonville either with momentum toward the postseason or with questions to answer. Either way, the battle adds another layer to the rich story of HBCU football.

Jackson State football hosts Tuskegee in the W.C. Gorden Classic on Saturday, broadcasted live on SWAC TV. Can JSU’s ground game and defense hold off the Golden Tigers’ special teams and momentum?

Series History: Jackson State vs. Tuskegee

Jackson State and Tuskegee have only met three times in football history. The Tigers won the first two matchups, while Tuskegee earned the most recent victory in 2017 in Mobile, Alabama. This week marks the first meeting between the two schools in nearly a decade.

Jackson State enters the game at 1–1 after falling to Southern Miss. The Tigers carry an 11-game winning streak against FCS opponents and a seven-game home win streak. They have also won five straight W.C. Gorden Classics, including both under head coach T.C. Taylor.

  • Ahmad Miller (RB): Miller leads the offense with 180 yards in the opener and three rushing touchdowns this season. Jackson State’s offense has scored all six touchdowns on the ground.
  • JaCobian Morgan (QB): The graduate transfer is 14–4 as a starter in his career. He went 10–1 last season for the Tigers, losing only to ULM.
  • Quincy Ivory (LB): A disruptive defender, Ivory ranks third nationally in sacks (1.5 per game). He has earned SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors in consecutive weeks.
  • Gerardo Baeza (K): Baeza remains consistent, hitting two field goals from 40+ yards last week. He has now converted 75 career extra points.

Jackson State’s red zone efficiency remains a major strength. The Tigers have scored on every red zone trip this season after finishing second in the nation last year at 96.3 percent.

Tuskegee Football: Momentum and Playmakers

Tuskegee comes in at 2–0 after shutting out Central State 34–0. It was the program’s first-ever night game at Abbott Memorial Stadium, and the Golden Tigers showed balance in all three phases.

  • EJ Hall (WR/RS): The sophomore transfer has emerged as a spark plug. He caught a 66-yard touchdown last week and added a 34-yard punt return.
  • Lorcan Ryans (K): Ryans earned SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after going 4-for-4 on PATs and drilling field goals from 42 and 33 yards. He also averaged nearly 63 yards per kickoff with six touchbacks.
  • Raequan Beal (QB): Beal continues to manage the offense well. His deep strike to Hall showed Tuskegee’s ability to create explosive plays.

Tuskegee’s defense also deserves recognition. The Golden Tigers forced multiple three-and-outs and allowed zero points against Central State.

Matchup Storylines

  • Ground Game vs. Defense: Jackson State leans heavily on the run, while Tuskegee is coming off a shutout. The battle in the trenches will be decisive.
  • Special Teams Impact: Both teams have elite kickers. Tuskegee’s Ryans and return man Hall give the Golden Tigers a chance to flip the field, but JSU’s Baeza is one of the SWAC’s most reliable legs.
  • Classic Pressure: Jackson State has dominated the W.C. Gorden Classic in recent years. Tuskegee will look to snap that streak.

Analyst Outlook

Jackson State’s home-field advantage, red zone efficiency, and rushing attack make the Tigers favorites. However, Tuskegee’s momentum, special teams play, and defensive confidence cannot be ignored. If the Golden Tigers can create turnovers and big special teams plays, an upset is possible. Otherwise, JSU’s depth and balance should carry the day.

Clark Atlanta University is set for a big Thursday night match on the ESPN family of networks. It is one of several HBCUs across America currently under threat.

HBCUs across Virginia and the South have faced a wave of threats this week, forcing campuses to shut down or go on lockdown. Virginia State, Hampton, Southern, Bethune-Cookman, and Alabama State all announced closures.

As of 1:26 p.m., no announcement has been made regarding the game against Fort Valley State, slated for 7 PM broadcast on ESPN2. The game will air on ESPN2, bringing rare primetime attention to Clark Atlanta and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

Clark Atlanta looking to keep momentum

Clark Atlanta (1-1) enters the matchup after a gritty 17-12 home win over Florida Memorial. The victory marked steady progress for head coach Teddy Keaton’s squad. Quarterback Zy McDonald has emerged as a dual threat, throwing for 382 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 110 yards and two scores. Receivers Armone Harris and David Martin have provided consistency, while the defense has forced turnovers in back-to-back games.

Keaton emphasized that his team’s more methodical approach doesn’t mean they’ve lost their edge.

“I want to be clear on something — we can score at will still,” he said on his coaches show with HBCU Gameday. “But it’s a conscious decision now to make sure we control and play football that complements our defense.”

Fort Valley State Ready to Rebound

Fort Valley State (0-1) arrives hungry after a 27-17 loss to West Alabama. Despite the defeat, the Wildcats flashed big-play potential. Saadiq Teel ripped off a 58-yard run, while Demetri Simmons added a rushing touchdown. Defensive back Daymon Polite turned heads with an 80-yard blocked field goal return for a score. Linebacker Jayden Walker paced the defense with 12 tackles as FVSU limited West Alabama’s passing attack to under 140 yards.

National Stage Despite Uncertainty

The primetime spotlight raises the stakes. ESPN2 upgraded the broadcast from ESPN+, with Tiffany Greene and Jay Walker handling the call. Keaton welcomed the exposure, noting how much it means for the program and HBCUs at large.

Prior to the events of Thursday, fans were expected to bring energy to Panther Stadium. Keaton praised their resilience after weather delays last week.

“Our fans were there for an hour and 45-minute delay, and when the rain stopped, they all poured back into the stadium ready to go again,” he said.

HBCU Gameday will continue to monitor the situation as game time nears.

Clark Atlanta University, the HBCU with the red turf, is back in the spotlight, and this time it comes with ESPN attention. The Panthers, fresh off a 17-12 home win over Florida Memorial, now shift their focus to Fort Valley State in a Thursday night showdown on ESPN2. The matchup not only marks Clark Atlanta’s SIAC opener, but also highlights two Division II HBCU programs looking to make early statements in conference play.

Through two games, Clark Atlanta (1-1) has leaned on the balance of quarterback Zy McDonald, who has thrown for 382 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 110 yards and two scores. Wideouts Armone Harris and David Martin have emerged as reliable targets, while the defense has forced two interceptions in as many games. Perhaps most importantly, Teddy Keaton’s squad has shown improvement in ball control, averaging nearly 23 minutes of possession per contest. (Saturday’s game against FMU was limited to just 32 minutes due to weather.

Still, Keaton insists the Panthers’ shift toward a more methodical approach hasn’t dulled their explosiveness.

“I want to be clear on something — we can score at will still,” Keaton said on his coaches show on HBCU Gameday. “But it’s a conscious decision now to make sure we control and play football that complements our defense.”

Fort Valley State (0-1), meanwhile, is coming off a 27-17 loss to West Alabama in Birmingham. Despite the defeat, the Wildcats displayed flashes of explosiveness. Quarterback duo Jaique Hart and Saadiq Teel combined for 77 passing yards, while Teel added a 58-yard run. Running back Demetri Simmons also found the end zone, and defensive back Daymon Polite returned a blocked field goal 80 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats’ defense, led by Jayden Walker’s 12 tackles, recorded six tackles for loss and kept UWA’s passing attack under 140 yards.

Thursday’s primetime game also comes with a marquee broadcast team.

“They lifted the game from ESPN+ to ESPN2, and we got the SWAC callers coming down — Tiffany Greene and Jay Walker are going to be broadcasting the game,” Keaton noted. “So it’s on a big stage, and I think everybody’s going to be ready.”

Keaton also praised the energy of CAU’s student body, which endured rain and lightning delays in the Florida Memorial game. “Our fans were there for an hour and 45-minute delay, and when the rain stopped, they all poured back into the stadium ready to go again,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the support we’re getting from our students and alumni.”

Kickoff is set for Thursday at Panther Stadium, and with ESPN cameras rolling, the clash promises to be one of the early highlights of the HBCU football season.

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Clark Atlanta Panthers fought off weather delays and then had to hold on for a 17–12 victory over Florida Memorial on Saturday, leaning on explosive plays from quarterback Zy McDonald and a resilient defensive effort.

Early Strike by Clark Atlanta

After the game kicked off an hour and 45 minutes late due to weather, Clark Atlanta set the tone in the first quarter when McDonald broke free for a 50-yard touchdown run with 4:50 remaining. Carlos Lopez added the extra point to give the Panthers a 7–0 lead.

Florida Memorial answered in the second quarter with a grinding 12-play, 62-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown from Nygel Osborne. The Lions missed the extra point, leaving CAU ahead 7–6.

Just before halftime, the Panthers’ two-minute offense came alive. McDonald guided the team 68 yards in five plays, setting up Lopez for a 31-yard field goal that pushed the lead to 10–6 at the break.

Panthers Find the Big Play in the Second Half

The highlight of the game came early in the third quarter. On the first play of a drive, McDonald connected with Ronnie West on a 37-yard touchdown strike, extending Clark Atlanta’s lead to 17–6.

That cushion proved vital as Florida Memorial mounted a late push. With 6:40 left in the fourth, Fernando Jeanty punched in a 6-yard score to close the gap to 17–12. However, the Panthers’ defense held firm in the final minutes to secure the win.

Offensive Leaders

Clark Atlanta (CAU)

  • QB Zy McDonald: 11-of-15 passing, 148 yards, 1 TD; 2 carries, 54 rushing yards, 1 TD
  • WR Ronnie West: 4 catches, 50 yards, 1 TD
  • WR David Martin: 1 catch, 61 yards
  • RB Armone Harris: 1 rush for 22 yards; 6 receptions for 37 yards

Florida Memorial (FMU)

  • RB Fernando Jeanty: 11 carries, 59 yards, 1 TD
  • RB Nygel Osborne: 12 carries, 51 yards, 1 TD
  • QB David Buggs: 5-of-12 passing, 39 yards, 1 INT

By the Numbers

  • Total Offense: CAU 256 yards (148 passing, 108 rushing) | FMU 141 yards (39 passing, 102 rushing)
  • Yards per Play: CAU 6.6 | FMU 3.1
  • Third Down Conversions: CAU 3-of-9 | FMU 4-of-13
  • Turnovers: FMU 1 (interception) | CAU 0

Final Thoughts

Clark Atlanta showcased balance on offense, with McDonald emerging as a true dual-threat leader. The defense bent at times but didn’t break, keeping Florida Memorial out of the end zone until late in the game.

For Florida Memorial, the run game showed promise behind Jeanty and Osborne, but struggles in the passing attack limited their ability to keep pace.

The Panthers move forward with confidence, while the Lions leave with lessons learned after a gritty effort on the road.

HBCU football kicked off in thrilling fashion last weekend, with standout performances across the SWAC, MEAC, SIAC, and CIAA. Explosive plays and record-setting debuts made it clear that this season is stacked with talent.

Here are the Top 5 HBCU football players to watch in Week 2, plus a few honorable mentions who could shine just as bright.

1. Andrew Body – QB, Alabama State

Week 1 recap: Andrew Body was sensational in the season opener. The Hornets’ dual-threat quarterback threw for 312 yards and 4 touchdowns, while also adding 119 yards rushing. His ability to take over a game with both his arm and legs makes him the most dangerous weapon in the SWAC right now.

This week’s matchup: Alabama State travels to face Southern in Baton Rouge. The Jaguars’ defense has struggled with mobile quarterbacks in the past, and Body’s versatility could put them on their heels early.

2. Ahmad Miller – RB, Jackson State

Week 1 recap: Miller was electric for the Tigers, exploding for 180 rushing yards on just 12 carries. He broke loose for a 76-yard touchdown run and looked unstoppable once he hit the second level.

This week’s matchup: Jackson State heads to Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are an FBS program, but Miller’s breakaway speed gives Jackson State a chance to create momentum-swinging plays.

3. Kendric Rhymes – RB, Tennessee State

Week 1: 21 carries, 174 yards, 2 TDs.
Why he stood out: Rhymes was a workhorse in the Tigers’ win, controlling the tempo with his blend of power and speed.

Next Opponent: at North Dakota State (Sept. 6)
Facing an FCS powerhouse on the road is no easy task. If Rhymes can put up solid numbers here, it’ll prove he’s more than just a one-week star.

4. Josh Darling – LB, Grambling State

Week 1 recap: Darling was the centerpiece of Grambling’s defense, racking up tackles and flying to the football. His physical presence gives the Tigers an enforcer in the middle.

This week’s matchup: Grambling faces Ohio State in Columbus. It’s a huge test against one of college football’s elite programs. While Grambling will be heavy underdogs, Darling has a golden opportunity to showcase his talent on a national stage. Scouts will be watching closely.

5. Cameron Peters – QB, Prairie View A&M

Week 1 recap: Peters was sharp in the Panthers’ opener, throwing for 301 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 60% of his passes. His poise under pressure and ability to stretch the field stood out.

This week’s matchup: Prairie View A&M hosts UT-Rio Grande Valley on SWAC TV. This will be a chance for Peters to build on his momentum and show that Prairie View has one of the SWAC’s most balanced offenses.

HBCU Honorable Mentions

  • Chris Mosley (RB, NCCU): Averaged 144 yards per game across his first two starts.
  • Dai’Vontay Young – RB, Central State (SIAC) 110 yards on nine carries in week one opener.
  • Khamauri Rogers – DB, Jackson State Grabbed an interception in the opener, travels to Southern Miss this weekend.

Closing

The opening weekend of HBCU football delivered fireworks across the SWAC, MEAC, CIAA, and SIAC. As Week 2 kicks off, the spotlight shines bright on these five playmakers. Each has the talent to tilt games, whether against FCS rivals or in showcase opportunities against FBS opponents.

Expect explosive plays, big storylines, and rising stars who will shape the 2025 HBCU football season.

Edward Waters opened its 2025 HBCU football season with a statement win that felt bigger than the scoreboard. Down 14-0 early to SIAC rival Savannah State, the Tigers ripped off 41 unanswered points to secure a 41-14 victory. The performance wasn’t just about the numbers. It was about second chances and a culture of redemption that Edward Waters has embraced with former SWAC stars Noah Bodden, Eric Dooley, and Brian Jenkins leading the way.

Bodden Finds His Rhythm

Quarterback Noah Bodden knows something about high expectations. Once a prized recruit at Grambling State and later a transfer to Southern, Bodden arrived at Edward Waters with unfinished business. On Saturday, he looked every bit the leader the Tigers needed.

Bodden completed 18 out of 27 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score. His connection with receiver Aiden Showers (6 catches, 108 yards, 2 TDs) sparked the comeback and showcased the firepower this offense can bring when clicking.

For Noah Bodden, this wasn’t just a stat line. It was proof that the winding road through the SWAC has led him to a place where he could thrive again.

Dooley’s New Playbook

On the sidelines, Bodden had the steady hand of Eric Dooley, the former Southern University head coach now serving as Edward Waters’ offensive coordinator. Dooley, long respected as one of the brightest offensive minds in HBCU football, brought his play-calling expertise to Jacksonville, and it showed.

The Tigers’ offense responded to early adversity with balance. 97 rushing yards to complement Bodden’s efficient passing—and controlled tempo the rest of the way. Eric Dooley’s presence alongside interim head coach Brian Jenkins made Edward Waters look like a program stacked with résumés, not reclamation projects.

Jenkins’ Vision

The win was validation for Jenkins, who spent years grinding as an associate head coach and coordinator before taking over this season as a head coach for the first time in nearly a decade.

“The only thing I can think about is a championship lifestyle, a championship environment,” Jenkins said when he was named interim head coach. “That’s the expectation I want to set with our players and in the community. Success is the only thing that you can achieve when you have that type of support.”

Jenkins has lived that message. He reminded fans that not long ago, Edward Waters didn’t even have an on-campus field or a proper locker room. Today, with upgraded facilities and an administration backing athletics, the Tigers look like a program climbing the HBCU ranks.

HBCU Edward Waters Noah Bodden Eric Dooley Brian Jenkins
A Program Reborn

Edward Waters has always fought uphill. Founded in 1866 as Florida’s first HBCU, the school re-launched football in 2001 and only recently joined the SIAC. For years, it played without the resources of larger programs, but it has leaned into its underdog status.

That spirit now mirrors the paths of Bodden, Dooley, and Jenkins—talented football minds and athletes finding redemption in Jacksonville. Bodden needed a new stage, Dooley needed a new system to shape, and Jenkins needed his shot at the big chair.

Together, they turned a 14-0 deficit into a runaway win and turned Edward Waters into one of the most fascinating storylines in HBCU football.

Brian Jenkins summed it up best: “It’s like a stock. When the stock is going up, you want to jump on it. Edward Waters is going up.”

Tuskegee University is preparing for a historic first for the HBCU: a night game at Cleve Abbott Stadium when the Golden Tigers host Central State University on September 6. But before the lights come on, Tuskegee Athletic Director and head coach Reginald Ruffin made headlines with a passionate Facebook post addressing fans, alumni, and former players. His message was clear—support the program the right way, and “buy your damn tickets.”

No Free Tickets, No Sideline Passes

Ruffin began by addressing what he said has been an overwhelming number of text messages from people asking for free tickets. The answer, he stressed, is no. “NO FREE TICKETS and nope I don’t have any,” he wrote. Ruffin extended the same firm stance toward sideline access. Former student-athletes, he noted, do not get free entry or sideline passes just because they once wore a Tuskegee jersey. Instead, he encouraged alumni to contribute to the program in meaningful ways, from buying tickets to donating resources that help current athletes succeed.

Challenging Former Players and Alumni

In the post, Ruffin pointed out that many of those requesting favors haven’t consistently athletics at the HBCU.

“Most of you don’t even donate a $5 case of water or Powerade,” he said. He added that the desire for sideline passes often has more to do with appearing on television than with supporting the team. He reminded readers of his track record, noting his history of championships as both an assistant and head coach, and emphasized that no one is entitled to special treatment.

Tuskegee

A Call for Accountability

Ruffin’s message also called out what he sees as a lack of honesty from some alumni. He urged former players not to exaggerate their role in Tuskegee’s success when speaking to their children or trying to gain access to the program. “Stop lying to your children’s about how great you were here. Don’t come here thinking I’m going to lie for you,” he said. His comments underscored a central theme: the program’s legacy is built by everyone, not just a few individuals.

Setting Boundaries for Game Day

The AD was equally firm about behavior around Cleve Abbott Stadium. He warned fans against attempting to enter the sidelines from tailgate areas with alcohol, noting liability concerns and emphasizing that violators would face consequences. “Yes Sir, you going to JAIL if you do. Yes, I will repeat YOU ARE GOING TO JAIL,” Ruffin stated. He drew a comparison to other major venues, saying Tuskegee fans should expect the same treatment at home that they would receive at stadiums like the Mercedes-Benz Dome or Jerry’s World.

A special night in HBCU history

Despite the stern tone, Ruffin closed with optimism, reminding fans that he loves them and believes this will be an amazing year for Tuskegee football. The night game against Central State is not only a milestone for the program but also an opportunity for the Tuskegee community to showcase the pride and tradition of one of the most storied HBCU programs in the country. His bottom line remained firm: nothing is free, and true support means showing up, buying tickets, and standing behind the program.

The 2025 HBCU football season opened with fireworks in Canton, Ohio, as Virginia Union dominated Miles College in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. The Panthers made the most of their national stage on NFL Network, storming to a 45–3 win that showcased why they are a top HBCU and CIAA contender.

Offensive Explosion Behind Curtis Allen

Senior running back Curtis Allen stole the show. He rumbled for 185 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a breathtaking 53-yard hurdle into the end zone. Allen not only powered Virginia Union’s ground game but also set the Classic’s single-game rushing record and walked away as the Offensive Player of the Game.

Quarterback RJ Rosales added balance, going 9-of-15 for 120 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 54 yards and another score. Senior QB Mark Wright connected with Ricky Key Jr. for a 35-yard TD before later hitting Keon Davis on a 48-yard strike. Freshman RB Raphael Tucker sealed the win with a 19-yard touchdown run in the final minute. In total, Virginia Union piled up 375 rushing yards and 556 total yards, dwarfing Miles’ 249.

Defense Sets the Tone

The Panthers’ defense looked every bit as fierce as advertised. They limited Miles College to just 50 rushing yards and forced five turnovers, including two interceptions. Junior defensive lineman Kamari Frederick earned Defensive Player of the Game honors for leading a relentless pass rush and shutting down the Bears’ offense.

Coach Parker’s “Play411” Message

After the game, head coach Dr. Alvin Parker emphasized the team’s identity and the pride of representing Virginia Union and HBCU football.
Our motto is Play411. So everything we do is based on that,” Parker said. “Anytime we get to show the world our brand, we’re going to take advantage of it. The way these guys played today, I’m extremely proud. I might not be as proud when I go back and watch the film, but I want to make sure we keep playing our level best, no matter where we are.”

Looking Ahead

With a commanding victory in the books, Virginia Union turns its focus to the HBCU Unity Classic against Edward Waters on September 13. The Panthers are chasing a historic CIAA three-peat, something they last achieved under Hall of Famer Willard Bailey in the early 1980s. For Miles College, the 45–3 loss is a tough opening lesson as they prepare for Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

The 2025 HBCU football season opened with Albany State delivering a statement performance, dismantling Shaw University 51-7 in Durham, N.C. It was an emphatic victory for an ASU program looking for some get-back. Last season, Shaw stunned the SIAC powerhouse with a controversial upset in Albany, leaving a bitter taste in the mouths of ASU fans. But this time around, there would be no upset. The SIAC favorite flexed its muscle, showing why it’s considered one of the strongest HBCU programs in the country.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Albany State wasted no time grabbing control. Veteran quarterback Isaiah Knowles pushed across the first touchdown of the season after an early field goal, while the Dirty Blue Defense immediately set the tone with a suffocating three-and-out and a Jakobe Heggs interception. Special teams joined the party when Cam Watts electrified the stadium with a 90-yard punt return touchdown, giving ASU a commanding 31-7 halftime lead.

By intermission, Knowles had already totaled 205 yards of offense and a rushing score, while Tiant Wyche anchored the ground game with 82 yards and a touchdown. Watts added 115 all-purpose yards, and defensive standout Aydin Henningham recorded five tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss.

Big win in battle of HBCU conferences

The second half was more of the same. Knowles capped another drive with his second rushing touchdown, Wyche added another score, and newcomer Roderick McCrary closed the night with the final touchdown to make it 51-7.

It was a tough start to a new era for Shaw head coach Lamar Mangio. But for Albany State, the win reasserted its place as a leading HBCU contender in 2025. The Golden Rams will look to carry that momentum into SIAC play next week against Kentucky State. They also ensure that the SIAC did not go winless against the CIAA as it did in 2024.

The collaboration between the CIAA and SIAC to bring more visibility to Division II football has created a new tradition in HBCU sports. Back in 2023, the two conferences proposed to the NCAA that Division II schools should be allowed to open their seasons with “Week Zero” games on Labor Day weekend along with several other conferences. The NCAA agreed, and by 2024 the change was in effect. Now, in 2025, the full vision is being realized as the CIAA and SIAC kick off the year with a slate of classics that spotlight the depth and tradition of HBCU football.

Building a Platform for HBCU Football

The shift to Week Zero was about more than just scheduling. For the CIAA and SIAC, it was about creating a platform for schools that often operate outside the national spotlight. Commissioner Dr. Anthony Holloman made that point clear during SIAC Media Day. “The anticipation of the road to championship for the 2025 season will begin the weekend of August 30th. Labor Day Weekend with the Red Tails Classic, the Black College Hall of Fame Classic, the Essence Football Classic, the Carolinas Classic, and the Detroit Football Classic,” Holloman said. “Our teams draw fans. We are marketable and you can see it by the number of classics that feature our teams to kick off our season, and you’ll be able to find these games on multiple platforms”.

That visibility is critical for HBCU programs, which are building momentum nationally. ESPN, HBCU Go, and even the NFL Network will broadcast SIAC and CIAA matchups this season, demonstrating that the decision made in 2023 has already begun to pay dividends.

Tuskegee vs. Winston-Salem State in the Red Tails Classic

Among the most anticipated contests of Week Zero is the Red Tails Classic in Montgomery, Alabama, featuring Tuskegee University from the SIAC against Winston-Salem State University from the CIAA. Both programs are rich in history, and both bring passionate fan bases to the neutral-site stage.

Tuskegee head coach Aaron James said the game is about more than just two storied schools meeting—it’s about setting a tone for the season. “It’s going to be a good matchup. And excited. Like I say, they are no stranger to the SIAC. The CIAA plays some good football over there and we do as well. So this is going to be a good atmosphere,” James said. “Playing Week Zero against Winston-Salem State, they finished up 7-3 last year. So they had a hell of a season. We just got to make sure that we coming in the game prepared and ready to roll”.

For Winston-Salem State, the matchup is a chance to prove itself against one of the SIAC’s flagship programs. Head coach Robert Massey said earlier this summer that opening with Tuskegee is “a chance to test our team right away against one of the best the SIAC has to offer.”

A New Chapter After CIAA Dominance

While the SIAC has built its reputation on defeating Division I HBCUs in recent years, last season belonged to the CIAA. The league went a perfect 6-0 against SIAC opponents in 2024, adding extra intrigue to this year’s showdowns. With that kind of track record, the CIAA enters Week Zero with momentum, while the SIAC looks to reclaim bragging rights on the field.

Full CIAA vs. SIAC Week Zero Slate

Here’s the complete list of CIAA vs. SIAC matchups for Labor Day Weekend 2025:

  • Red Tails Classic (Montgomery, AL): Winston-Salem State (CIAA) vs. Tuskegee (SIAC)
  • Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic (Canton, OH): Virginia Union (CIAA) vs. Miles (SIAC)
  • Essence HBCU Classic (Boston, MA): Morehouse (SIAC) vs. Johnson C. Smith (CIAA)
  • Labor Day Classic (Columbia, SC): Fayetteville State (CIAA) at Benedict (SIAC)
  • Shaw (CIAA) vs. Albany State (SIAC): Raleigh, NC

Together, these contests represent the manifestation of the proposal made by the CIAA and SIAC just two years ago. For fans, they provide an action-packed opening weekend. For players, they are a chance to compete on elevated stages. And for the conferences, it’s a showcase of the tradition, passion, and talent that defines HBCU football.

Benedict College and Fayetteville State University meet this Saturday in a clash of two HBCU powers. The Tigers enter the matchup with a dominant defense and new faces at quarterback, while the Broncos bring experience under center and a hunger to bounce back after a rare down year. The game will be nationally televised on HBCUGO.

Benedict College: Defense Defines the Tigers

Benedict enters 2025 with one of the toughest defenses in HBCU football. Two linebackers, Ty’Metrius Patterson and Isaiah Stephens, landed on the Black College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List.

  • Patterson was the SIAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year after recording 13 tackles for loss in 2024.
  • Stephens led the team with 68 tackles and continues to be the heart of the defense.

The secondary gets a boost with Cam Williams, a transfer from Miles College who was first-team All-SIAC in 2024 and is now on the D2Football.com Elite 100 Watch List.

Up front, Israel Nwokocha is a proven pass rusher, and Jaxon Williams returns as one of the best kick returners in Division II. Together, they give Benedict impact players at every level of defense and special teams.

Who Will Start at Quarterback for Benedict?

Benedict’s quarterback situation is the biggest storyline heading into the season. Last year’s starter, Charles “Tre” Simmons, has moved to wide receiver.

That leaves several contenders for the starting role:

  • Darius Ocean, a transfer from Johnson C. Smith, brings experience with 2,301 passing yards and 16 touchdowns last year.
  • Josef “Tre” Manley, a transfer from Chowan, impressed in spring practice and is pushing hard for the job.
  • Bryce Conover and Jackson Jensen add depth but remain less proven.

The key for Benedict’s offense will be limiting mistakes and letting its elite defense control the game.

Fayetteville State: Broncos Looking to Bounce Back

The Fayetteville State Broncos are out to prove they still belong among the CIAA’s elite. After a 4–5 record in 2024, they were picked to finish fourth in the CIAA preseason poll.

Head coach Richard Hayes Jr. enters his ninth season with a roster full of experience and leadership.

Offensive Leaders

Quarterback Joe Owens Jr. returns after throwing for over 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024. His poise and ability to stretch the field make him the centerpiece of the offense.

Supporting him are:

  • Julian Milligan, who led the team in rushing with 259 yards.
  • Caden Davis, a red-zone weapon with seven touchdowns on just 19 carries.
  • Wide receivers Kameron King and David Baros, both capable of big plays.

Defensive Anchors

Linebacker Jamari Slade was named to the Preseason All-CIAA Team after leading the Broncos with 77 tackles last season. He’s joined by offensive lineman Benjamin Hicks and defensive back Keyshawn Monk, both also preseason all-conference picks.

Key Matchups to Watch

  1. Benedict’s Defense vs. Joe Owens Jr.
The Tigers thrive on pressure. Owens must find time in the pocket to keep FSU in the game.
  2. Benedict’s Quarterback vs. FSU’s Secondary
Whoever starts at QB must avoid turnovers against a secondary led by Monk.
  3. Special Teams Edge
Benedict’s Jaxon Williams is one of the top return men in Division II and could flip the field at any moment.

How to Watch the Game on HBCU GO

Fans can stream the matchup for free on HBCU GO:

  • HBCUGO.TV – stream live in your browser.
  • HBCU GO Mobile App – available on iOS and Android.
  • TV Apps – stream on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV.
  • Syndicated Broadcasts – HBCU GO reaches 95% of U.S. TV households through partner networks, including TheGrio and Local Now.

Columbia Weather Forecast for Saturday

Football fans in Columbia, SC, can expect warm but comfortable conditions for Saturday’s game.

  • Kickoff Forecast: Mostly sunny with temperatures in the mid-80s.
  • Evening Conditions: Gradual cooling into the upper-70s by nightfall.

No major rain or storms are expected, making it ideal weather for football.

What’s at Stake

This matchup gives Benedict a chance to show that its defense can carry the program to another level. For Fayetteville State, it’s about rebounding from 2024 and proving they remain a contender in the CIAA.

Expect a physical game where turnovers, field position, and special teams could be the difference.

Nick Billoups’ college football journey has been long, winding, and mostly spent on the sidelines. Now, the former UCLA quarterback has decided to bet on himself one more time—this time at Lane College, a Division II HBCU competing in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC).

From Pac-12 to the SIAC

Billoups, a 6’1”, 203-pound dual-threat quarterback from San Clemente, California, has bounced around some of the biggest programs in the West. He walked on at Utah in 2020, then transferred to BYU for three seasons without seeing action. Billoups landed at UCLA in 2024, before hitting the portal again in 2025. Despite his athleticism and all-star high school resume. One that included nearly 1,500 passing yards, over 1,000 rushing yards, and MVP honors at the 2020 OC North-South All-Star game. Billoups never cracked a rotation at the FBS level.

After entering the portal, the redshirt senior faced a familiar question: Would he ever get a real shot under center?

Lane College’s Recent Football Path

Lane College, an HBCU in Jackson, Tennessee, has quietly been carving out a reputation as a program where overlooked talent can shine. The Dragons have had flashes in recent years but haven’t consistently broken through in the SIAC title race. Still, Lane has shown that its players can reach the next level.

Former defensive lineman Andrew Farmer went from the Dragons’ trenches to the NFL. In 2023, he signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Farmer earned his way onto the field in Los Angeles and later joined the Denver Broncos.

For a player like Billoups, who’s struggled to get on the field at bigger programs, Lane offers something different: a chance to lead, play, and put meaningful snaps on tape.

UCLA HBCU Nick Billoups Lane College
The Opportunity Ahead

It’s not uncommon for quarterbacks to spend their careers buried on depth charts at Power Five schools. What’s rare is a player refusing to let that be the end of their story. For Billoups, this is more than just another transfer; it’s an opportunity to resurrect a career that never got off the ground at Utah, BYU, or UCLA.

Lane isn’t just another stop. It’s a historic HBCU program with a culture rooted in resilience and opportunity. For generations, HBCUs have been where overlooked athletes prove themselves and carve out professional paths—sometimes against all odds.

Nick Billoups still has the tools. In high school, he showed he could hurt defenses with his arm and his legs, scoring 24 total touchdowns as a senior at San Clemente. Now, with one final year of eligibility, he’ll need to translate that promise onto the field for the Dragons.

A Career-Defining Season?

The book on Billoups has always been filled with potential but thin on production. At Lane, he finally has a chance to flip the narrative. If he can turn the Dragons into contenders and put together a season that reflects his dual-threat skillset, he could follow in the footsteps of Andrew Farmer and remind scouts that talent isn’t only found at the Power Five.

For an overlooked quarterback who’s refused to quit, this DII HBCU opportunity might be the biggest stage yet.

When Usher steps onto a stage, he owns the room. This past weekend, the R&B superstar proved that same magnetic presence translates seamlessly to the golf course. At the PGA Tour Championship, the Atlanta-raised icon turned heads in the Polo Ralph Lauren x Morehouse College collection—a fashion statement that merged Ivy League polish with unapologetic HBCU pride.

Usher in Morehouse Mode

Draped in a maroon and white Morehouse jacket, crisp white tee, and a matching cap, Usher looked like he was born to disrupt the buttoned-up aesthetic of professional golf. The fit came from the Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs collection, a collaboration deeply rooted in HBCU tradition and storytelling. Morehouse alumnus James M. Jeter curated the collection, ensuring every thread carried the weight of legacy.

The look wasn’t just about sharp tailoring—it was about signaling that HBCU culture belongs on every stage, from the halftime show to the fairway. Usher’s appearance comes months after his show-stopping Super Bowl performance, where he pulled the Jackson State Sonic Boom of the South into the spotlight. If there’s one thing about Usher, it’s that he never forgets where he came from and is intentional about where he shines the light next.

More Than Just Fashion

This Polo Ralph Lauren partnership represents more than apparel—it’s a cultural statement. The Oak Bluffs capsule tapped Morehouse and Spelman graduates as designers, storytellers, and muses, tying together Ralph Lauren’s preppy aesthetic with the enduring traditions of Black excellence. When Usher zipped up that jacket, he wasn’t just styling; he was repping an institution that shaped generations of leaders and creatives.

Even the setting—a PGA Tour Championship—added weight. Golf, a sport long steeped in exclusivity, suddenly looked different with Usher and fellow star Rick Ross, an Albany State alumnus, bringing HBCU energy to the greens. In an Instagram video, the duo laughed, posed, and made the fairway feel more like an upscale Atlanta block party than Augusta National’s shadow.

Why It Matters

For HBCUs, visibility is currency. A global icon like Usher sliding into the Polo Ralph Lauren x Morehouse collection at a marquee PGA event is more than celebrity style—it’s amplification. It’s a reminder that HBCUs aren’t just fueling the culture; they are the culture.

And for fans, it’s inspiration. Whether you’re a Morehouse student pulling all-nighters in Graves Hall or an alum who still hums the alma mater, seeing one of the world’s biggest stars in your school’s colors validates the grind.

The Takeaway

Usher didn’t just attend the PGA Tour Championship—he remixed it. He turned the golf course into a runway, gave the cameras a cultural moment, and once again put HBCUs at the center of the conversation. It was preppy. It was polished. And above all, it was proudly HBCU.

Edward Waters University interim head football coach Brian Jenkins is continuing to reshape his staff and turn heads in HBCU football. Following the departure of former head coach Toriano Morgan last month he has now added a pair of former Division I coaches to his staff.

Jenkins, tasked with elevating the Tigers’ program, has already made several notable moves. His first addition came with the hiring of veteran coach Eric Dooley, a development first spotted on social media before being officially confirmed. The addition of the former Prairie View and Southern University head coach. The move was widely regarded as a strong first step in his staff-building efforts. He is listed as the program’s offensive coordinator.

Over the weekend, Jenkins confirmed another significant hire: Earnest Wilson III, who serves as Chief of Staff for Temple University football. A well-respected veteran in collegiate coaching circles, Wilson brings extensive HBCU experience, having previously served as head coach at both Savannah State and Elizabeth City State. In 2016, he was named CIAA Coach of the Year while at ECSU.

An HBCU Veteran At Multiple Levels

“Earnest is a veteran with championship eyes and a wealth of experience that can really help me and this team,” Jenkins said. “He’s coached at nearly every level, from professional leagues to major college programs, and he’s known for either turning programs around or helping reverse their fortunes. He was also instrumental in the development of the ‘Air Raid’ offense.”

Wilson’s coaching career spans more than three decades. He began in 1990 as receivers and tight ends coach at Allegheny College, where the program captured the NCAA Division III National Championship. His journey included assistant roles at Maine (1992), Penn State (1993–94), Alabama A&M (1995–96), Elizabeth City State (1997–98), Oberlin (1999), Benedict (2003–04), New Mexico State (2005–09), Jackson State (2010–11), and Hampton (2012). In 2013, Wilson was named head coach at Savannah State, later leading Elizabeth City State as well.

At Temple, Wilson reunited with head coach Stan Drayton, a relationship that began when Drayton played at Allegheny during Wilson’s early coaching days. His hiring at Edward Waters represents both a homecoming to HBCU football and a new opportunity to impact the Tigers’ trajectory. He is listed as special teams coordinator and running backs coach in addition to director of football operations.

Former Edward Waters head coach Toriano Morgan returned to his alma mater, Tennessee State University, to serve as co-offensive coordinator under head coach Reggie Barlow. Since stepping into his interim role, Jenkins admits he has been humbled by the outpouring of support from the EWU community and beyond.

“I feel good, and at the same time I am overwhelmed by all of the support,” Jenkins reflected. “I was shocked at the response—it really grabbed me and touched me. I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this program.”

Former Alabama football star and NFL veteran Sam Shade has lived a football life full of twists and turns. From SEC glory to an NFL career, from hauling uniforms to laundromats as a high school coach to hoisting an SIAC trophy at Miles College, Shade has taken the long road to becoming a Division I head coach at an HBCU.

“I’m always going to be where my feet are, and I’m going to do the best job I can do, no matter where I am,” Shade said in an interview with the HBCU Coaches Corner.

That mindset has carried him through a career defined more by persistence than privilege — a grind that prepared him for his new challenge at Alabama A&M.

Alabama Football Roots and an NFL Grind

Shade made his name as a hard-hitting defensive back at Alabama football. He earned respect in one of the nation’s most demanding programs and won a national title in 1992. That toughness carried him to the NFL, where he built a career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington.

Looking back, Shade says his journey was guided by faith.

“When I played pro ball and people say, ‘Hey man, how did you play so many years?’ I tell them, look, that wasn’t my plan. That was God’s plan,” he said.

Still, Shade didn’t lean only on his NFL résumé after retiring. Instead, he started as a high school coach, a move that shaped his philosophy and prepared him for bigger opportunities.

Laundromats, Lessons, and Miles College Glory

After leaving the NFL, Shade returned home to Birmingham to lead a high school program. The job demanded humility. “When the washer breaks down and you’re taking clothes to the laundromat to wash ’em for practice…that definitely teaches you some things,” he said.

At first, he thought that role might be his last. “I took that job thinking, okay, I’m going to do this till I retire,” Shade recalled. “A lot of people don’t believe that, but that’s the truth.”

However, when Miles College — just minutes from where he grew up — offered him the head coaching position, he knew he couldn’t resist. “I said, man, I can’t pass up this opportunity. I can always go back and be a high school head coach,” he said.

Shade rewarded that leap by turning Miles into a contender. In only his third season, he led the Golden Bears to the SIAC championship. “I wanted to take it places it had never been. I thought it might take a little while to do that, but we had success,” Shade said.

A Different Road to the SWAC

That success brought Shade to Alabama A&M, where he now leads one of the most historic HBCU football programs. “There are some things, some experiences I had at Miles that I’m quite sure will help me tremendously here at Alabama A&M,” he said.

Shade’s climb has looked different from some of his peers. “Sometimes when a guy jumps straight out of the professional ranks as a player and is thrown into a head [coaching job]…that’s tough,” he explained. “For me, it was the right way to go step by step.”

Still, he holds respect for rivals who took alternate routes. He praised Alabama State’s Eddie Robinson Jr., another NFL veteran who became a head coach. “Some guys just have it, man. Coach Rob was one of those players who wanted to know what everybody was doing, why we were doing it. He’s carried that into coaching,” Shade said.

Ready for His Biggest Test

Shade believes every stop along the way prepared him for this moment. “I’m a lot better coach now than when I first got into it,” he reflected. “And I’m a lot better head coach at this point too.”

From Alabama football Saturdays in Tuscaloosa to grinding in the NFL, from washing uniforms just to keep practice alive to celebrating a championship at Miles, Shade has lived every rung of the coaching ladder. Now, he steps into the spotlight of the SWAC with Alabama A&M, determined to show that the long road is the one worth traveling.

“That wasn’t my plan. That was God’s plan,” Shade said.

It’s tough to stand out as an HBCU in Atlanta, but Clark Atlanta University basketball has added some razzle-dazzle to the mix.

For the 2025-2026 season, Clark Atlanta University unveiled a stunning new basketball court that blends school pride with a bold, modern look. At the heart of the design is a large black-stained hardwood section. A subtle, light-gray outline of the Atlanta skyline stretches the length of the floor, instantly connecting the program to the city.

The iconic Panther logo dominates center court, with “Panthers” in bold lettering above it. The keys feature a natural wood tone, framed by sharp red borders. Inside each lane, the “SIAC” conference logo stands out. Bright red boundary lines tie the floor to the surrounding red-and-black bleachers. Above the skyline, the phrase “One Make One” appears in elegant script, adding a personal and motivational touch.

An Instagram Reel meant to showcase Edward Waters University wideout Makai Lovett turned into an HBCU football Easter egg—catching former Southern head coach Eric Dooley back on the sidelines, quietly working under interim head coach Brian Jenkins. The brief but unmistakable cameo has fans speculating on Dooley’s next move and what this pairing could mean for Edward Waters’ football future.

Eric Dooley: Highs, Heartbreaks, and a New Sideline Chapter

Eric Dooley’s coaching journey has been marked by offensive ingenuity and high-stakes SWAC showdowns. A former standout at Grambling State (’85–’88), Dooley returned to the sidelines in 1997 at Southern as running backs coach, later transitioning to receivers coach through 2010. After further honing his craft as offensive coordinator at Arkansas–Pine Bluff and Grambling, Dooley took the helm at Prairie View A&M (2018–2021), leading them to two SWAC West Division crowns and a championship game appearance in 2021.

Fans rejoiced in December 2021 when Southern tapped Dooley as head coach. He delivered on that optimism in 2022—claiming the SWAC West Division and earning a spot in the conference championship game. But by November 2023, Southern fired Dooley after a disappointing 5-5 start, citing a need for new leadership to meet the program’s high expectations. He departed with a 12-10 overall record and 9-6 in SWAC play.

Brian Jenkins: Steady Hands at Edward Waters

Enter Brian Jenkins—a decorated HBCU coaching veteran known for discipline and championship pedigree. Jenkins has been the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Edward Waters since 2021, a pivotal role during the HBCU institution’s transition to NCAA Division II and construction of new facilities. In July 2025, EWU announced Jenkins as interim head coach amidst this growth surge—a move signaling trust in his vision and experience.

Jenkins’ résumé is bright: from 2010 to 2014, he led Bethune-Cookman to four MEAC championships, three FCS playoff berths, and racked up a 46-14 record. He earned multiple Coach of the Year honors, building one of HBCU football’s most dominant runs.

A Sideline Symphony: Redemption Meets Renaissance

This Instagram Reel is more than a snapshot—it’s a narrative of redemption, mentorship, and rebirth in HBCU football. Dooley, reentering the fold alongside a proven architect like Jenkins, brings an offensive spark to a program on the rise. For Dooley, it’s a chance to recalibrate, contribute, and rebuild credibility. For Jenkins and Edward Waters, it’s an injection of elite-level sideline experience to match their institutional ascent.

While Dooley’s exact role with Edward Waters University remains unclear, this pairing is a storyline worth watching: two seasoned leaders, each navigating career inflection points, converging in a shared pursuit of excellence under the HBCU banner.

The Edward Waters University football team is embracing a new mindset — one forged in sweat, sand, and shared struggle. In a recently posted video from a beach workout session, the HBCU football team from the SIAC is seen grinding under the Florida sun as new head coach Brian Jenkins leads the charge.

From wind sprints on unstable terrain to synchronized group drills and explosive conditioning moves, the team’s energy is locked in. The beach, for Coach Jenkins, is more than a location — it’s a crucible.

Social Media Reacts: “Jenks Bringing That Feeling Back”

For those who are familiar with the legacy of Jenkins or played under him at Bethune-Cookman, this is more than just a tough workout — it’s déjà vu.

@bigdavis813 commented, “Man, that beach made us a team back at Cookman! Jenks bringing that feeling back with Edub. Salute!”

@realmarcus04 added, “Just how he built BCU into a powerhouse — he’s about to do the same for EWU.”

@jaydon.hodge wrote, “Say Coach Jenks ya head coach without sayin’ it… This right here, the beach work. Good luck this season, Coach!”

The consensus? The culture shift is already being felt — and respected.

Brian Jenkins Is No Stranger to Rebuilds

Jenkins made his name at Bethune-Cookman University, where he turned the Wildcats into a MEAC championship team during his time there from 2010–2014. His teams were known for their discipline, mental toughness, and elite conditioning.

The beach workout — now signature Jenkins — was central to that identity. It’s where he forged not just athletes, but brothers.

Now at Edward Waters, he’s bringing that same formula — with a chip on his shoulder and a new blueprint in hand.

Edward Waters: Building More Than a Program

With increased institutional support and ambitions to rise through the HBCU football ranks, Edward Waters is primed to make a statement. The Tigers have already shown signs of growth in recent seasons, but this era marks the beginning of a true cultural transformation.

What the beach workout symbolizes is clear: unity, trust, and sacrifice. Every rep in the sand builds the foundation for fall Saturdays.

What’s Ahead for the Tigers

As EWU prepares for the 2025 season, expect more than just new schemes — expect a team that fights for every yard and plays with purpose. Under Jenkins’ leadership, Edward Waters is looking to disrupt expectations and demand respect.

The workout may have been unorthodox, but it’s already doing what it’s supposed to: turn heads and build belief.
