DURHAM, NC — If the goal was to give the MEAC, South Carolina State, NC Central, and HBCU football a national showcase, Friday night in Durham delivered.

Flexed from Saturday to Friday and moved up to a 5:30 p.m. kickoff to air live on ESPN2, the matchup between South Carolina State and NC Central was more than just a crucial conference game. It became a showcase for the league’s depth, the level of play in Black college football, and the MEAC’s growing partnership with national television. Despite concerns across HBCU spaces that the shift would depress attendance, the game produced not only a lively atmosphere but a thrilling 34–27 finish that demonstrated why these programs are among the best the conference has to offer.

The game showcased every ingredient that makes HBCU football special: big plays, star performances, creative coaching adjustments, passionate fans, and a championship-level sense of urgency. For South Carolina State, the reigning MEAC champion, the stakes were clear—win and stay undefeated in league play. For NC Central, the 2022 Celebration Bowl champion, the opportunity to stay alive in the title race was on the line. The contest featured 761 yards of total offense, five lead changes, and momentum swings that kept the national audience engaged throughout.

A Heavyweight Fight Worthy of a National Slot

The MEAC’s decision to lean into linear television windows continues to pay off, and Commissioner Sonja Stills emphasized that amplifying member institutions is a priority. Speaking ahead of the matchup, Stills noted that ESPN’s interest is tied directly to the quality of the league’s product.

“Any way that you can help amplify our institutions, that’s what we want to happen,” Stills told HBCU Gameday the previous week in Baltimore. She added that opportunities like Friday’s telecast are beneficial “not only [for] the MEAC and the institutions, but also HBCUs as a whole.”

That amplification was on full display in O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

The game opened with explosive scoring: a 50-yard South Carolina State field goal, a 41-yard NC Central field goal, and then back-to-back SCSU touchdown bombs in the final seconds of the first quarter—a 28-yard strike with 10 seconds left, followed by a 51-yard touchdown as the period expired. It was the type of dramatic, high-level play that television executives crave and the type of moment that leaves casual viewers saying, “These teams can play.”

NC Central responded with resilience befitting a championship program. A pick-six, a long methodical 98-yard touchdown drive, and steady rushing from Chris Mosley helped the Eagles take a 20–17 lead into halftime. The atmosphere felt like playoff football—every score, penalty, and possession carried season-defining weight.

William Atkins, SC State,

South Carolina State’s Championship Resolve

Trailing by seven entering the fourth quarter, South Carolina State leaned on the physical identity that has long defined the South Carolina State program. The Bulldogs dominated time of possession for the night (36:29 to 23:31), wore down the Eagles’ front, and marched 80 yards to tie the game on a Jordan Smith touchdown reception with 13:25 left. From there, the Bulldogs’ offensive balance—314 passing yards and 140 rushing yards—proved decisive.

Running back Josh Shaw delivered the knockout blow with a 30-yard touchdown run at the 1:51 mark, his second explosive play of the quarter. His 83 rushing yards on just 10 carries (8.3 per carry) highlighted the type of game-changing talent the MEAC has increasingly showcased on national broadcasts.

Defensively, South Carolina State sealed the game with relentless pressure, recording three sacks and generating key stops on NC Central’s final drive. The Eagles’ last four plays were all incompletions, a testament to how the Bulldogs adjusted in pivotal moments.

Why This Was a Showcase for the Entire HBCU Football Landscape

This game mattered beyond the standings—even though those stakes were enormous. With the victory, South Carolina State improved to 4–0 in MEAC play, setting up a winner-take-all showdown against Delaware State. NC Central, now 7–4 overall and eliminated from Celebration Bowl contention, still demonstrated the league’s evolving parity and depth.

But the broader significance rests in visibility:

1. National Platforms Validate the Product

As Stills explained, linear TV windows are designed to “push the conference and…get the institutions to a national spotlight.” The MEAC delivered a primetime-worthy product—fast, emotional, dramatic, and high quality.

2. Analytics and Atmosphere Supported It

Despite concerns about the early Friday timeslot, nearly 7,300 fans attended the game—a strong number for a non-weekend kickoff and evidence that the MEAC brand travels and draws regardless of scheduling shifts.

3. Celebration Bowl Stakes Drive Engagement

No other FCS conference has a direct national championship stage like the Celebration Bowl gives the MEAC and SWAC. That pipeline, combined with rising viewership for HBCU football, gives every late-season MEAC game added meaning.

Conclusion

In the end, South Carolina State vs. NC Central was everything the MEAC needed it to be—and everything HBCU football deserved. It was dramatic, well-played, competitive, emotional, and nationally visible. It showcased elite talent, strong coaching, emerging stars, and a conference embracing modern exposure opportunities.

Most importantly, it reaffirmed what many already know: when given the stage, HBCU football shines just as brightly as any brand in college athletics.

And on Friday night, under the Durham lights, the MEAC made that case emphatically.

A South Carolina jury has ordered the NCAA to pay $18 million to former HBCU football player Robert Geathers, who played at South Carolina State University from 1977 to 1980. The verdict found the NCAA negligent for failing to warn him about the long-term risks of concussions.

HBCU Football Player at South Carolina State Awarded $18 Million

The jury awarded $10 million to Robert Geathers and $8 million to his wife, Debra Geathers, following a civil trial in Orangeburg County.

Doctors testified that the 68-year-old former HBCU defensive end suffers from dementia and shows symptoms consistent with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) — a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head trauma in football players.

How the Jury Reached Its Decision

Jurors concluded that the NCAA unreasonably increased the risk of harm to Geathers beyond what’s inherent to football. They also found the organization breached its duty to protect players’ health and safety.

Attorney Bakari Sellers, who represented the Geathers family, argued that the NCAA knew about concussion dangers as early as the 1930s but failed to warn players — particularly at HBCUs like South Carolina State.

“All of the information they knew, they withheld,” Sellers told jurors. “Their job was to keep the boys safe.”

NCAA’s Response and Next Steps

The NCAA said it disagreed with the verdict and plans to file post-trial motions or appeal if necessary. It emphasized that it has won all other jury trials on similar concussion-related claims.

NCAA attorney Andy Fletcher maintained that football inherently involves head impacts and that Geathers’ other medical issues may explain his dementia symptoms.

“There’s going to be head hits,” Fletcher said. “That’s inherent to the game. You can’t take head hits out of football.”

Why This Case Matters for HBCU Athletes

This landmark decision could have a major impact on HBCU sports and college football nationwide. It raises questions about how governing bodies protect players at smaller institutions and whether the NCAA’s historic approach to concussion safety adequately served HBCU athletes.

For former players and current athletes, this case highlights the growing recognition of long-term brain injuries in college sports and the responsibility of institutions to ensure player safety.

NORFOLK, Va. — South Carolina State spoiled Homecoming for Michael Vick and Norfolk State in front of a record-breaking crowd at William “Dick” Price Stadium, rolling to a 51–20 victory on Saturday afternoon. The announced attendance of 47,273 marked not only the largest in Norfolk State history but also the biggest home-field attendance in the FCS this season — a fitting stage for Vick’s debut Homecoming as head coach.

Dominant Second Quarter Breaks the Game Open

After falling behind 7–0 early, South Carolina State exploded for 35 points in the second quarter, overwhelming the Spartans on both sides of the ball. Quarterback William Atkins IV turned in one of the best passing performances of the HBCU season, throwing for 428 yards and four touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing. His favorite target, Jordan Smith, was nearly unstoppable, finishing with seven catches for 197 yards and two long touchdowns of 75 and 36 yards.

The Bulldogs trailed briefly after Norfolk State’s J.J. Evans caught a 22-yard touchdown from Otto Kuhns in the first quarter. From there, it was all South Carolina State. Mason Pickett-Hicks capped a 73-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown to give SCSU the lead for good, and Atkins IV followed with scoring strikes to Nigel Johnson, Smith, and Pickett-Hicks before halftime. The Bulldogs led 38–14 at the break, having outgained the Spartans 397–144 in the first half.

South Carolina State’s balance causes problems

South Carolina State’s offense piled up 613 total yards, with a balanced attack that saw 185 rushing yards complement the aerial assault. Running back Tyler Smith ran for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Pickett-Hicks added another score on the ground and one through the air. Kicker Nico Cavanillas Alti contributed three field goals to finish a perfect 3-for-3.

The Bulldogs dominated time of possession (37:52 to 22:08) and converted nine of 16 third downs. Defensively, they limited the Spartans to just one third-down conversion all afternoon and recorded three sacks and an interception by Josh Barker, which set up an early second-half field goal.

For Vick’s Norfolk State, the bright spots came from wideouts Evans and Xzavion Evans, who combined for all three Spartan touchdowns, including a 66-yarder late in the first half and a 48-yard strike in the fourth. However, the offense managed only 61 rushing yards and struggled to sustain drives against an aggressive Bulldog front.

Despite the loss, the electric Homecoming atmosphere and record crowd reflected renewed energy around the program under Vick’s leadership. A ticket was required for entry on campus, which explains why the listed attendance was more than 17k over the capacity of Dick Price Stadium. Many people never got within 100 feet of the stadium, but were counted nonetheless. But on this Saturday, South Carolina State (5–3, 1–0 MEAC) left Norfolk with the momentum — and the statement win — in a game that was as historic for its crowd as it was lopsided on the scoreboard.

South Carolina State University is on lockdown after a tragic shooting disrupted Homecoming weekend and left one person dead and another critically injured.

According to university officials, the shootings happened late Saturday night near Hugine Suites, a student residential complex. The violence broke out just hours after the Bulldogs’ Homecoming football game.

Woman Killed, Man Critically Injured

Authorities said the first victim — a young woman visiting campus — was taken to a local hospital but did not survive her injuries. A second victim, a man also visiting, was airlifted to another hospital for advanced care. His condition has not been released.

Another guest was hurt while running away from the scene but is expected to recover.

Immediate Lockdown and Safety Response

Campus police issued an immediate lockdown after the first shots were fired. Students were told to shelter in place, and off-campus visitors were urged to leave the area for safety.

University President Alexander Conyers offered condolences on behalf of the SC State family:

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who lost her life and to all who have been affected,” Conyers said. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate these senseless acts of violence. The safety and well-being of our students, employees, and guests remain our top priority.”

South Carolina State Homecoming Events Canceled

As a precaution, SC State canceled the Homecoming concert and all Sunday activities that were planned to close the weekend. The campus remains secured, with access limited to students, employees, and investigators while the case moves forward.

Counseling and Support for Students

SC State’s Counseling and Self-Development Center is open and available for students impacted by the tragedy. University leaders encouraged anyone struggling with grief or anxiety to reach out for help.

“We know this tragedy has shaken our Bulldog Family,” President Conyers said. “We are providing counseling and support for anyone in need. I ask everyone to continue caring for one another.”

Security Measures and Investigation

Officials emphasized that enhanced security protocols had been in place throughout Homecoming Week, including controlled entry points for major events, increased camera monitoring, and stronger emergency communication systems. Law enforcement agencies including the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office assisted SC State’s own Department of Public Safety in responding to the incident.

The investigation is active, and no additional details about suspects or a motive have been released.

The post HBCU Legend Announces NFL Retirement appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Darius Shaquille Leonard’s NFL career may have been brief, but it was unforgettable and stands as one of the greatest success stories in modern HBCU football history. The former South Carolina State great, affectionately known as “The Maniac,” officially announced his retirement on Wednesday at just 30 years old. Over six seasons, Leonard rose from HBCU standout to NFL All-Pro, leaving a legacy that stretched far beyond the gridiron.

From HBCU Star to NFL Sensation

Leonard’s journey began at South Carolina State, where he dominated the MEAC and turned heads with his sideline-to-sideline explosiveness. That production made him a second-round selection by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2018 NFL Draft, and he wasted no time making his presence felt.

As a rookie, Leonard led the entire NFL with 163 tackles, adding seven sacks, four forced fumbles, and two interceptions. His debut campaign earned him AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, immediately cementing his reputation as a game-wrecker in the middle of the Colts defense.

“The Maniac” Era: A Career Timeline

Leonard’s career took off quickly and rarely slowed down. In 2019, he followed up his rookie explosion with five interceptions and earned his first Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro selections. Two years later, in 2021, Leonard signed a five-year, $98.5 million extension, becoming the highest-paid inside linebacker in NFL history — a landmark deal for any player, but especially for one from an HBCU program.

He remained the heartbeat of the Colts’ defense through the 2022 season before injuries began to take their toll. Midway through 2023, Indianapolis released Leonard, but he quickly latched on with the Philadelphia Eagles and closed the year with them. By the 2024 offseason, after a period of uncertainty and recovery, Leonard was at peace with the idea that his playing days might be behind him. In 2025, he made it official: he was retiring from football.

Over 75 career NFL games, Leonard compiled 637 tackles, 17 forced fumbles, 16 sacks, and 12 interceptions, earning three Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro nods in the process. His blend of instincts, aggression, and flair made him one of the most dynamic linebackers of his generation.

A Historic Payday for an HBCU Great

Leonard’s 2021 contract extension wasn’t just personal validation but a milestone moment for HBCU football. The deal shattered linebacker salary records and spotlighted the elite talent pipeline flowing from historically Black colleges and universities to the NFL.

For South Carolina State and HBCUs nationwide, Leonard’s rise sent a clear message: elite talent can emerge from anywhere, and it deserves the game’s biggest stages.

The Toll of Greatness

While his on-field play was ferocious, Leonard’s career also reflected the physical toll that comes with playing at such intensity. Recurring back injuries and concussions ultimately slowed his production, forcing him to miss extended time and altering his explosiveness. By 2024, Leonard acknowledged that his body might not allow a return to peak form, saying,

“If it happens, it happens. If it don’t, it don’t. I think throughout my career I’ve had a great career, even if I do step away from it.”

That acceptance carried the weight of a body pushed to its limits and a mind that knew when it was time to shift focus.

Off the Field: Big Heart, Bigger Impact

Leonard’s influence stretched far beyond tackles and turnovers, as he consistently used his platform to uplift others and honor his roots. In 2022, he made headlines when he flew out the South Carolina State Marching Band to perform at an NFL game, giving his alma mater’s musicians a moment in the national spotlight. That same year, he donated to the families affected by the Uvalde school shooting, offering tangible support during a time of national tragedy.

In 2024, Leonard renewed his commitment to the next generation by joining the coaching staff at Lake View High School and returning to his hometown to mentor young athletes. Through these actions, he showed that his legacy wasn’t just built on football greatness — it was also built on generosity, leadership, and an unwavering connection to his HBCU community.

Insights From the Homecoming: Gems Dropped at Training Camp Visit

In August 2025, Darius Shaquille Leonard returned to South Carolina State’s locker room — not for a ceremony, but to speak directly to the Bulldogs during their training camp. His visit was full of heart, humility, and hard truths, as he delivered a speech packed with wisdom and reminders of what it means to grind.

He told the team,

“What made me who I am was when I fell in love … I fell in love with the process. I fell in love with outworking the person beside me.”

He recalled a piece of advice from a veteran NFL teammate:

“The person you are now and the person that you want to become cannot coexist at the same time.”

Leonard challenged the team to sacrifice — late nights in film sessions instead of parties, extra reps unseen by fans, and risking one’s body for the progress of others.

“This game does not owe you nothing, but you owe this game everything … Are you willing to sacrifice nights from not partying, going out, and get some work? Are you willing to put your body on the line for your brother to make a play?”

His message was clear: legendary careers aren’t forged by talent alone, but by a daily standard, relentless work ethic, and mindset grounded in humility. For the SC State players he addressed, hearing that message from someone who walked in their cleats carried a weight that no highlight reel could replicate.

Retiring as a Colt: Full Circle Honors

The story has a poetic ending. The Indianapolis Colts announced that Leonard will officially retire as a member of the franchise during a halftime ceremony in their 2025 home matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

He’ll address the home fans from the field at halftime and had been slated for a press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium earlier that day. The Colts plan to celebrate his impact in a moment designed to acknowledge his on-field ferocity and his off-field influence.

In Indianapolis, franchise leadership framed the moment as long overdue:

“Colts Nation will always remember The Maniac’s palpable energy on the field with each tackle, interception, punchout, and fumble recovery,” the team said in a statement. “Off the field, he’s a servant leader … We’re thankful for Shaq and the contributions he made to our organization.”

While the Eagles closed out his final season in 2023, this ceremony ensures Leonard’s story ends where it began: in the blue and white of the Colts.

A Lasting Legacy

Darius Shaquille Leonard’s story is more than just a highlight reel — it’s a blueprint for how HBCU football excellence can reverberate all the way to the NFL’s brightest lights. From under-recruited prospect to record-breaking Pro Bowler, from “The Maniac” on Sundays to a generous leader off the field, Leonard’s impact will echo well beyond his 75 games.

South Carolina State turned Dawson Stadium into a fireworks show on Saturday night, outlasting Bethune-Cookman in a 55-41 SWAC vs MEAC thriller that lived up to every bit of the HBCU conference rivalry hype.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Bulldogs Blitz Early

The Bulldogs (2-1) wasted no time setting the tone, exploding for 24 first-quarter points. Quarterback Ryan Stubblefield engineered the attack with efficiency, going 21-of-35 for 286 yards and a touchdown through the air while adding 31 yards and two rushing scores.

The MEAC defense also joined the party early. With Bethune quarterback Timmy McClain under pressure, Malik Harp scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, putting SCSU up 21-0 before the first quarter ended.

Wildcats Find a Spark

Bethune-Cookman (0-3) looked dead in the water, trailing 27-0 in the second quarter, before redshirt senior quarterback Cam’Ron Ransom entered the game. Ransom provided an immediate jolt, leading a 17-play, 75-yard drive capped by his own two-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats’ first points of the HBCU football season.

From there, Ransom kept the SWAC program alive. He finished 20-of-30 for a game-high 302 yards with four passing touchdowns while also rushing for 78 yards and two more scoresbethune stats. Wideout Maleek Huggins was his top weapon, torching the SCSU secondary for 148 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches.

Second-Half Fireworks

Every time Bethune clawed closer, South Carolina State had an answer. After a missed PAT left the Wildcats trailing 27-13, Stubblefield extended the lead with a 13-yard keeper. A controversial fumble call in the red zone stalled another B-CU drive, and SCSU made them pay with a Stubblefield-to-Jordan Smith touchdown strike. Smith finished the night with nine catches for 87 yards and a score.

Bethune didn’t quit, though. Ransom connected on bombs to Huggins and Lorenzo Jenkins as part of a furious 28-point fourth quarter. But each Wildcat push was countered by a Bulldog haymaker—none bigger than Mason Pickett-Hicks’ 69-yard sprint to the end zone that snuffed out momentum. Pickett-Hicks needed just four carries to rack up 87 yards and that game-breaking touchdown.

This was a pure offensive slugfest. The SWAC and MEAC teams combined for 1,068 yards of total offense—561 for SCSU, 507 for Bethune-Cookman.

 • SCSU Offense: Stubblefield (335 total yards, 3 TDs), Pickett-Hicks (87 yards, 1 TD), Tyler Smith (53 yards, 1 TD).
 • B-CU Offense: Ransom (391 total yards, 6 TDs), Huggins (148 yards, 2 TDs), Morales, and Jenkins with touchdowns.
 • Defenses: SCSU’s Roderick Kelly led with 10 tackles, while B-CU’s Antwone Watts had seven stops.
What’s Next

South Carolina State heads to Tampa next weekend to face FBS foe South Florida on Sept. 20, with a noon kickoff. Bethune-Cookman finally gets a home HBCU crowd when it hosts Edward Waters at Daytona Stadium on the same day. A matchup set to coincide with Hall of Fame Weekend and Welcome Dr. Mosley Day.

The Washington Commanders have added a proven leader to their secondary. The team signed nine-year NFL veteran and HBCU product Antonio Hamilton Sr. out of South Carolina State to the active roster.

Hamilton joins Washington ahead of its second preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Aug. 18. He will help replace cornerback Kevon Seymour, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with an undisclosed injury.

A Well-Traveled Pro

Hamilton’s NFL journey has been one of determination and consistency. He entered the league in 2016 as an undrafted free agent with the Oakland Raiders. Since then, he has suited up for the New York Giants, Kansas City Chiefs, Arizona Cardinals, and Atlanta Falcons.

In 109 career games, Hamilton has recorded 179 tackles, two interceptions, and 25 pass breakups. He also has 18 career starts. His special teams value is undeniable — he played nearly every special teams snap for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Hamilton, he’s a phenomenal player, he’s a vet, knows the game inside and out,” said then–Buccaneers safety Mike Edwards back in 2021. “As you can see, he’s been playing for a long time.”

HBCU Roots

Before the NFL spotlight, Hamilton made his mark at South Carolina State University. The Bulldogs are among HBCU football’s most respected programs.

Antonio Hamilton played three seasons and appeared in 33 games for South Carolina State. He totaled 73 tackles, one sack, four interceptions, and nine pass breakups. On special teams, he excelled as a returner. He had 33 kickoff returns for 818 yards and two touchdowns, plus 23 punt returns for 498 yards and two touchdowns.

His junior season was his breakout year. As a return specialist, he earned All-Conference honors, showing the speed and versatility that would carry him into the pros.

The Commanders’ Fit

Washington’s secondary has been a mix of youth and experience this offseason. Hamilton adds veteran leadership and positional flexibility. He also brings the kind of special teams impact that can help win field position battles.

The Washington Commanders will see him in action on Sunday night against the Bengals for the first time. Coaches expect him to contribute on defense and special teams.

For a team looking to take the next step in 2025, adding an HBCU alum with Super Bowl experience could be prudent. Hamilton’s presence offers stability now — and guidance for the next generation of Washington defenders.

Veteran HBCU softball coach Nakeya Hall is eager to return to the institution that helped shape her both personally and professionally. South Carolina State University has announced the return of Hall as the new head coach for the Lady Bulldogs softball program.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be named the Head Softball Coach at South Carolina State University,” Hall shared. “Returning to the place that helped shape me is truly a full-circle moment.”

Hall’s return to her alma mater comes after seven successful seasons at Grambling State University, where she led the Lady Tigers to a historic 33-win season in 2023 and guided them to the SWAC Championship game for the first time since 2001. Hall’s tenure also produced multiple All-SWAC selections, including Kamryn Broussard, the 2025 SWAC Player of the Year.

HBCU journey leads home

Hall’s coaching journey began at South Carolina State, where she spent four years as an assistant coach before moving to Winston-Salem State for two seasons. She also spent five seasons at Alabama A&M University. Under Hall, Alabama A&M boasted what was statistically the strongest offense in the SWAC from a power standpoint during the 2018 campaign. Alabama A&M led the league in batting (.297), slugging percentage (.448), runs per game (.593) and home runs (32). This remarkable season earned Hall 2018 SWAC Coach of the Year honors and a share of the Eastern Division Championship. Her return to HBCU softball represents a significant moment for the program and the broader HBCU community.

“We are excited to bring Coach Hall back home to Bulldog country,” said Interim Director of Athletics Oliver “Buddy” Pough. “Our softball fans remember her enthusiasm and are eager to see her return.”

With her extensive experience and proven track record of success, Hall is poised to continue building a competitive program at South Carolina State, making her return an exciting new chapter in HBCU softball.

When Darius “Shaq” Leonard walked back into South Carolina State’s locker room, it wasn’t as the wide-eyed freshman who arrived in 2013. It was as a three-time NFL All-Pro, Defensive Rookie of the Year, and one of the most decorated players in the modern era to come out of an HBCU.

On August 10, the Orangeburg native returned to where it all began—not for a ceremony or spotlight, but to speak directly to the Bulldogs football team during training camp. And what he brought with him wasn’t a cliché pep talk. It was nothing but gems.

“Fall in Love With the Process”

Leonard wasted no time breaking down the mentality that carried him from the MEAC to the NFL.

“What made me who I am was when I fell in love… I fell in love with the process. I fell in love with outworking the person beside me.”

The linebacker-turned-legend recalled his transition from SC State to the pros, sharing advice he once got from a veteran NFL teammate:

“The person you are now and the person that you want to become cannot coexist at the same time.”

For Leonard, that meant sacrifice—late nights in the film room instead of at parties, extra reps when no one was watching, and putting his body on the line for his teammates.

“This game does not owe you nothing, but you owe this game everything… Are you willing to sacrifice nights from not partying, going out, and get some work? Are you willing to put your body on the line for your brother to make a play?”

Beyond Social Media Highlights

Leonard’s message also cut through the noise of today’s social media-driven sports culture.

“Everybody loves to post on social media, but social media don’t get you paid. It’s about what you do when nobody’s watching—that’s what separates me.”

He reminded the team that greatness is about meeting and maintaining a standard, every single day.

“When you step on the field, you gotta clock in that day and go to work. Pressure is very low when you’re prepared—you always fall back on your preparation.”

Legacy Meets the Present

Leonard’s visit wasn’t just a feel-good reunion but a living example of what’s possible for HBCU athletes. His college career included 394 tackles, 53 tackles for loss, 22 sacks, and two MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards. His NFL résumé—complete with Pro Bowls, All-Pro honors, and a contract that once made him the highest-paid inside linebacker—proves that elite football talent can be built and showcased at an HBCU.

For the South Carolina State Bulldogs, hearing that from someone who’s been there carries a weight no highlight reel can match. Upholding the program’s tradition while building something bigger for themselves is a challenge.

Why It Matters for HBCU Football

In the broader landscape of HBCU football, these moments are about more than motivation. They’re about connecting today’s players to the legacy that built their program, inspiring belief, and showing that the leap from a small-town campus to the NFL spotlight is not just possible—but that there’s a blueprint for success.

And Darius “Shaq” Leonard’s blueprint for getting there? Love the game. Outwork everybody. Live up to the standard—every single day.

]]>
Kendall Rae Johnson, a 10-year-old from Atlanta and Georgia’s youngest certified farmer, has received a full scholarship to South Carolina State University (SC State)—one of the nation’s top HBCUs.

This milestone honors both her extraordinary journey in agriculture and the strong support HBCUs continue to offer young Black leaders.

A Life-Changing HBCU Campus Visit

Kendall Rae was touring 1890 land-grant HBCUs with her family when they visited South Carolina State in Orangeburg, SC. While exploring the school’s 300-acre Research & Demonstration Farm, she was invited to meet SC State President Alexander Conyers.

In a surprise moment, he offered her the 1890 Agriculture Innovation Scholarship, worth $83,598. The scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and room & board.

President Conyers said he was inspired by her energy and focus. “We were blown away by Kendall Rae’s focus and maturity. She speaks with passion about crop cycles, soil health, and even longhorn cattle. Her future is bright.”

From Backyard to Full-Fledged Farmer

Kendall Rae started gardening with her great-grandmother at just 3 years old. By 6, she became Georgia’s youngest certified farmer.

Today, she manages about an acre of land and grows a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, tomatoes, apples, and okra. Her story has made headlines across the country and inspired other youth in agriculture.

Leading With Heart and Purpose

Kendall Rae is also the founder of Kendall Rae’s Green Heart, a nonprofit that teaches kids about farming, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. She serves as a USDA National Urban Agriculture Youth Ambassador and uses her platform to raise awareness about food justice.

Her father, Quentin Johnson, said she has inspired their whole family. “She pulled me into this. Now we’re all growing together—literally.”

Big Dreams for a Bigger Impact

Kendall Rae has no plans of slowing down. She says she wants to own at least 100 acres of farmland and raise longhorn cattle. She’s especially excited about SC State’s international agriculture programs, including a goat research initiative in The Gambia.

Despite her age, she’s already thinking about college life. During her visit to campus, she told staff, “I’ll be back in 10 years to see all the new buildings.”

SC State is investing more than $250 million into new campus development—timed perfectly for the future freshman.

The HBCU Difference

This full-ride scholarship highlights the powerful role HBCUs play in supporting young Black innovators. Schools like South Carolina State invest early in youth who have the potential to lead industries and inspire change.

President Conyers believes Kendall Rae’s potential HBCU story is just beginning. “Kendall Rae Johnson is exactly the kind of student we want to support. She’s a future leader—here at SC State and beyond.”

South Carolina State University, a leading HBCU, has named Tess Abbott as its new Director of Recruiting for the football program. Head coach Chennis Berry announced her addition on July 1, 2025.

Abbott makes history as the first woman to serve on the football staff at South Carolina State. The university continues to set the standard for growth and inclusion in HBCU athletics.

Elevating HBCU Football Recruiting

In her role, Abbott will guide the Bulldogs’ entire recruiting strategy. Her focus includes:

 • Coordinating official and unofficial campus visits
 • Evaluating athletic talent
 • Managing recruiting operations both on and off campus

Coach Berry praised Abbott’s leadership, calling her a valuable asset. Her addition brings fresh energy and structure to the program’s recruiting goals.

Strong Background in Collegiate Sports

Before joining this HBCU program, Abbott worked with UMass Football as the Director of On-Campus Recruiting and Administrative Operations. She led campus events, coordinated team logistics, and handled key administrative projects.

She also gained professional sports experience with the High Point Rockers, where she served as Community Relations and Social Media Coordinator.

Academic and Athletic Achievements

Abbott earned a master’s degree in Sport Management from Coastal Carolina University. While there, she interned with the football team and served as a graduate assistant.

A former student-athlete, Abbott competed on WMU’s gymnastics team. She later served as a student assistant coach. In 2022, she received the NCAA Ethnic Minority Graduate Scholarship and completed a diversity internship with WMU Athletics.

Former HBCU basketball standout TJ Madlock has officially joined the Detroit Pistons Summer League roster following the 2025 NBA Draft. His addition continues a strong pipeline of HBCU talent earning professional opportunities through the NBA Summer League.

Madlock, the son of Alabama State head coach Tony Madlock, played his final college season with the Hornets, where he started all 32 games in 2024–25. He averaged 13.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while leading Alabama State to its first SWAC Tournament appearance since 2019. His performance was a consistent bright spot for the HBCU program, with 28 games scoring in double figures, including a 30-point outburst at Prairie View A&M.

A versatile guard with three years of HBCU basketball experience, Madlock began his career at South Carolina State before transferring to Alabama State. As a freshman, he averaged 12.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists at SCSU. He followed that up with a strong sophomore season at Alabama State, earning SWAC Newcomer of the Year honors while averaging 11.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest. Across his career, Madlock demonstrated the ability to score, defend, and facilitate, making him a valuable addition to the Detroit Pistons Summer League squad.

Madlock’s signing is another sign of increasing NBA interest in HBCU athletes. With the Summer League providing a key stage for undrafted talent, his inclusion on the Detroit Pistons roster gives him a chance to showcase his skills against elite competition. It also highlights the depth of talent coming out of HBCU programs, which continue to produce players capable of competing at the professional level.

For HBCU basketball fans, Madlock’s presence in the Summer League represents both pride and progress. As the Detroit Pistons prepare for Summer League action, Madlock will look to capitalize on the opportunity and prove that HBCU stars deserve a place in the NBA conversation.

After a brief NFL career, former HBCU football star Marshall McFadden has carved out a new path in NASCAR, where he puts his athleticism to work.

The former South Carolina State linebacker now serves as the jackman for NASCAR driver Ross Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet ZL1 crew.

“After being in the NFL and college football, it gave me the perfect ingredients to cross over to NASCAR. Here, that same professionalism and athleticism applies,” McFadden told the Winston-Salem Journal. “The understanding of how things are done is similar, and that’s how I worked my way up to being a jackman.”

McFadden made his mark at South Carolina State University, an HBCU known for producing NFL players. After tallying 12 tackles in 2007, he broke out in 2008 with 88 tackles and five sacks. His performance earned him MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors and confirmed his ability to lead and disrupt offenses.

NFL, HBCU

He began his professional career in 2012 when the Pittsburgh Steelers signed him to a reserve/future contract. Although released during final cuts, the team added him to the practice squad. He earned a promotion to the active roster in November but was later released and re-signed to the practice squad.

In 2013, McFadden joined the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad. He moved to the St. Louis Rams in 2014, earning a spot on the active roster in October. He remained with the team until September 2015, when he was released during final cuts.

Now, McFadden is finding success in NASCAR as Chastain continues to climb the ranks.

The post HBCU awards degree to 80 year old Vietnam veteran appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Linwood Riddick didn’t enroll at South Carolina State University, an Orangeburg, South Carolina, HBCU, in pursuit of a career. Instead, he came seeking clarity, a renewed sense of purpose, and a way to honor a legacy that deeply moved him.

This month, the Vietnam War veteran and longtime member of the SC State Concert Choir received his bachelor’s degree in music industry—just weeks before his 80th birthday in July.

His journey to that diploma was far from traditional, but it was firmly grounded in personal conviction.

“I was walking through campus one day and overheard some men discussing the Orangeburg Massacre,” Riddick recalled, referring to the tragic 1968 police shooting that claimed the lives of three unarmed Black students at SC State. “I thought to myself, ‘I need to come here, leave my mark on this institution in honor of those young men.’”

Now, with his academic journey complete, Riddick hopes his story will inspire others. “People will see me and hopefully understand the purpose behind my being here,” he said.

A Moment of Recognition

SC State President Alexander Conyers made a special pause during Friday’s commencement ceremony to honor Riddick as he stepped down from the choir risers.

“Mr. Riddick, at 80 years old, has been fully immersed in the student experience—singing in the choir, performing at events,” Conyers said. “You inspire us all.”

Later in the ceremony, Conyers personally handed Riddick his diploma, and the arena erupted in applause from his fellow graduates and the audience.

From Service to Song

Born in New York and raised in Virginia, Riddick began his college journey at Norfolk State University before being drafted into the U.S. Navy and serving in Vietnam. After returning home, he built a successful business selling souvenirs and various goods for over 30 years.

“I did my time in the military, came back, got some help from the VA, and started my own business,” he said. “I ran that business until I retired at 72.”

Instead of settling into retirement, Riddick began commuting from his home in Summerville, South Carolina, to Orangeburg for classes.

“I wanted to keep my mind and body active,” he said. “The brain is like a spiritual muscle—it needs to be used. Mind, body, soul, and spirit—all must be engaged.”

An HBCU Voice and a Mentor

At SC State, Riddick became a familiar face in the Concert Choir, performing at commencements and special occasions. But his impact extended far beyond the stage. His presence brought inspiration and wisdom to a younger generation of students.

Riddick hopes to continue supporting his HBCU. He plans on working with faculty and students to build stronger intergenerational connections and spark greater student engagement.

“We need to bridge the gap,” he said. “Sometimes, one must teach one. With all I’ve been through, I want to mentor these students. Hopefully, the faculty and I can foster more connection. We need innovation.”

A Message of Hope

Riddick’s advice to others, particularly seniors, is simple but powerful: “If I can do it, you can do it. Nothing’s impossible if you try.”

As for the future? He jokes, “The only thing left for me now is to get computerized—but I’ve got everything else covered.”

The 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships showcased the continued rise of HBCU track excellence. Howard University claimed the women’s title, while Norfolk State University captured the men’s crown—proving both HBCU programs remain powerhouses in the MEAC.

Howard Women Run Away with MEAC Track Title

Howard’s women’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance, continuing their reign with a fourth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Bison finished with 292 points—over 100 more than their closest rival.

The HBCU program’s success was comprehensive. Howard dominated across all disciplines, collecting 14 gold medals and making 28 podium appearances, including three complete podium sweeps. From sprints to distance, every event reflected the team’s preparation and depth.

Star sprinter Kailei Collins claimed victory in the 100m dash (11.28), while teammate Kiya Lawson secured gold in the 200m (22.87) and 400m (53.75). In hurdles, Marcia Sey captured the 100m hurdles title in 12.84 seconds.

Middle-distance runner Camille Egbula earned back-to-back wins in the 800m and 1500m. Joslyn Crosby added a win in the 5,000m. Howard’s 4x100m relay squad—Collins, Sey, Tiffani-Rae Pittman, and Aiyana Gray-Williams—sealed their dominance with a 44.15-second win.

Norfolk State Track Team Secures Men’s Championship

Norfolk State’s men’s track team continued its MEAC dynasty, earning its fourth straight outdoor championship. The Spartans totalled 227 points, separating themselves from the competition.

This HBCU program excelled in both sprints and distance events. In the 10,000m, Gidion Sigei led a podium sweep with a time of 30:36.11. Norfolk State repeated the sweep in the 5,000m behind Sigei, Victor Jumo, and Lewis Too.

On the sprint side, Premier Wynn won the 400m (46.53), while Kendrick Winfield claimed the 200m (20.70) after finishing second in the 400. The Spartans capped their performance with a dominant 4x400m relay win in 3:09.34.

Howard Men Share Second in Competitive Finish

Howard University’s men’s team tied for second place with Coppin State, each scoring 111.5 points. The Bison were led by standout hurdler Noah Langford, who won the 110m hurdles (13.64) and the 400m hurdles (50.65). He later anchored the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish in 3:09.66.

Other key contributors to the HBCU program’s performance included Goba Dan-Princewill, who finished third in the 100m dash, and Chase Drewery, who earned silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.44 meters.

MEAC Track & Field Shows HBCU Growth and Depth

The 2025 MEAC Track & Field Championships reflected not only the success of Howard and Norfolk State, but also the rising strength of HBCU programs across the board. Teams like Coppin State, Morgan State, and Delaware State made their presence felt through individual standout performances.

Although the championship trophies went to two familiar programs, the overall depth and competitiveness suggest a bright future for MEAC track and field. With several HBCU athletes advancing to the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the conference is poised to make an impact at the national level.

As the outdoor track season progresses, HBCU programs in the MEAC continue to prove they belong on the national stage—with speed, strength, and strategy that match any conference in the country.

Howard University softball will be representing HBCU softball and the MEAC in the NCAA Tournament. After dominating the MEAC with a 20-1 regular season record, the Bison entered the conference tournament with one thing on their minds—revenge. That one loss came back in March at the hands of South Carolina State. On Saturday, Howard got even and left with a trophy.

The Bison took control early and never let up, cruising to a 6-1 win over South Carolina State in the MEAC Championship. The victory marked Howard’s third tournament title in program history and first since 2022.

Bison Strike Early and Set the Tone

Howard wasted no time asserting dominance. Senior Kenna Higa led off with a double, while MEAC Rookie of the Year Lauryn Jones followed with a bunt single and a stolen base. In just a few minutes, the Bison jumped to a 2-0 lead and silenced any nerves in the crowd.

Although South Carolina State’s Jamaria Charley hit a solo homer in the third to close the gap to 2-1, Howard didn’t flinch.

Howard Responds With Pressure and Poise

In the bottom of the third, Jones slid safely under the tag at home to extend the lead. Moments later, Alyssa Vasquez scored on a defensive miscue, and Merci Hart drove in another run to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Then, in the sixth inning, Higa came through again. She drilled her second RBI double of the game, allowing junior Maryn Jordan to score from first and sealing a 6-1 advantage.

Defensively, the Bison closed the door by retiring South Carolina State in order during the top of the seventh.

Standouts Shine in Championship Win

Graduate pitcher Ameenah Ballenger earned her 12th win of the season and captured Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Head Coach Tori Tyson received the Most Outstanding Coach award. Senior Mia Gonzales also landed a spot on the MEAC All-Tournament Team, joining a group that executed with grit and confidence.

HBCU reps head to Durham

With the championship win, Howard (31-18) secured an automatic berth in the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament. The HBCU squad will head to the Durham Regional and face No. 14 seed Duke University on Friday, May 16 at noon.

The four-team regional—hosted by Duke—also includes Coastal Carolina and Georgia. The double-elimination format will determine who advances to the NCAA Super Regionals set for May 22–25.

ESPN will carry coverage from all 16 regional sites, giving fans the chance to follow the HBCU squad toward NCAA glory.

The New York Jets made a pickup in the hours following the 2025 NFL Draft that may pay dividends moving forward if history repeats itself. The Jets invited South Carolina State linebacker Aaron Smith to their minicamp and have signed him to a free-agent deal.

Aaron Smith, 6’2″ and 226 lbs, was a standout at SCSU, earning First Team All-MEAC honors in 2024. His senior season included 95 tackles and 8.5 tackles for loss. Known for his instinctive play and coverage abilities, Smith showcased his skills at the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl. While concerns about his size and occasional over-pursuit exist, his college production and football IQ suggest he has the tools to develop into a reliable NFL contributor for the New York Jets.

Former Limestone University defensive linemen Shon Brown and Jackson Chavis did not have to go far to find their new homes in college football for the 2025 season. With Limestone recently closing its doors amid the university’s financial struggles, South Carolina State University, an HBCU in the same state as Limestone, is reaping the benefits, signing both Brown and Chavis to bolster the Bulldogs’ defense under second-year football coach Chennis Berry.

Brown committed to the HBCU after putting together a solid 2024 season with the Saints, registering 42 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and seven quarterback hurries.

“Committed! Bringing the Holy Spirit to SC State. Praise Jesus! Acts 20:24,” Brown tweeted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Chavis enters his freshman season at South Carolina State University after serving as a two-sport athlete — football and wrestling — at Hartsville High School in Gaffney, South Carolina. At Hartsville, Gaffney earned all-conference recognition as an offensive tackle and defensive end, received the Pee Dee Offensive Lineman of the Year, and captured two state championships in wrestling.

“I’m blessed to make my commitment to SC STATE!!!!! Go Dawgs!!!” Chavis tweeted on X.

Limestone University Closes Its Doors

Limestone, a private Christian university nearly 140 miles from Orangeburg, South Carolina, was “burdened by debt” and faced a “declining enrollment”, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. The university’s board of trustees met recently and voted to cease operations after Limestone’s 2025 spring commencement ceremonies.

Two weeks before the board’s decision, Limestone made a public request for $6 million in donations to allow the university to move its classes online. According to The Chronicle, if the school did not receive financial help, it risked closing its doors.

University leaders remained “cautiously optimistic” about Limestone remaining open for business after the university launched the “Together for Limestone” campaign on April 24 to keep the 180-year-old institution open. The Fullerton Foundation committed $1 million to the fundraising campaign. Limestone earned $2.143 million from nearly 200 donors over two weeks.

Nathan Copeland, president of Limestone University, wrote in a statement that the university “cannot fully express the sorrow” of the school’s closure.

“Our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters fought tirelessly to save this historic institution,” Copeland said. “While the outcome is not what we hoped for, we are forever grateful for the passion, loyalty, and prayers of our Saints family.

After enduring eight seasons without a winning record from 2014 to 2021, Limestone turned its program into a winner, achieving back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in program history.

Program on the Rise

In 2022, Limestone posted an 8-4 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), earning the Saints their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs. Building on that success, the 2023 season saw the Saints notch another 8-4 campaign and an impressive 8-1 mark in SAC play. The Saints secured their second consecutive playoff appearance. However, Valdosta State defeated Limestone in the opening round.

Limestone concluded the 2024 season with a 7–4 overall record and a 6–3 mark in the SAC. While Limestone did not secure a playoff berth, the Saints maintained a winning record for the third consecutive year, underscoring the program’s continued growth under head coach Mike Furrey.

Brown and Chavis will join a South Carolina State team that is one of the best in HBCU football. The Bulldogs finished 9-3 overall and 5-0 in MEAC play, won a MEAC title and earned a Celebration Bowl berth in the 2024 season.

Former South Carolina State and Florida International quarterback Amari Jones will begin the next chapter of his HBCU football career at Bethune-Cookman, he announced Saturday on social media.

Jones’s commitment to BC comes after he signed with the MEAC champion South Carolina State Bulldogs in January with the expectation of becoming SCSU’s next marquee quarterback in the departure of standout signal caller Eric Phoenix. Instead of leading the Bulldogs’ offense under second-year football coach Chennis Berry, Jones will seek to become the lead man under center in the Wildcats’ offense.

FBS to MEAC to SWAC

“God’s body! He makes no mistakes! Work time,” Jones wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback spent two seasons at FIU. Last season, Jones threw for 101 yards and tossed one touchdown in a reserved role for a Panthers’ team that finished 4-8 and 3-5 in Conference USA action.

Jones joins a BC team that finished 2-10 overall and 2-6 in SWAC play in the 2024 campaign under Wildcats football coach Raymond Woodie Jr. Last season, quarterbacks Cam’Ron Ransom and Luke Sprague led Bethune-Cookman’s offense, with Ransom handling an overwhelming majority of the snaps.

HBCU Amari Jones Bethune-Cookman

Ransom finished the season with 1,844 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions while rushing for 163 yards on 106 attempts and five touchdowns on the ground in 11 games. As an offensive unit, Sprague amassed 336 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in five games last season. BC finished next to last in scoring offense (20.2 ppg) and rush offense (105.4 ypg), ninth in total offense (290.2), and eighth in pass offense (184.8) per game in the 2024 season.

Amari Jones’ arrival in Daytona Beach, Florida, could be the spark needed for Woodie’s offense in the 2025 season. Bethune-Cookman will begin the 2025 HBCU football season on the road against FIU on Aug. 29 in Miami. Setting up a potential revenge match with the quarterback’s former FBS team.

A struggling HBCU program is pushing the reset button on its women’s basketball team. South Carolina State University is preparing to announce a new women’s basketball coach following the resignation of head coach Tim Eatman, the school announced this week.

Eatman, who completed his third season at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs, stepped down amid a challenging tenure marked by on-court struggles and rebuilding efforts. The team’s performance declined over the past three seasons, finishing 3-27 in 2022–23, 2-28 in 2023–24, and 2-29 in 2024–25.

Interim Athletics Director Oliver “Buddy” Pough acknowledged Eatman’s efforts, stating, “I appreciate Coach Eatman for his efforts at South Carolina State on and off the court and wish him and his family the best in the future.”

While wins were scarce during his tenure, Eatman was credited with maintaining player morale and laying a foundation for long-term improvement. Nevertheless, the lack of tangible progress in the win column ultimately led to the decision to part ways.

Looking ahead, SC State is expected to usher in a new era for its women’s basketball program. The university will introduce its next head coach during a press conference on Tuesday, May 6, at 2 p.m. in the President State Room on campus.

The upcoming hire is anticipated to bring renewed energy, vision, and a strategic approach aimed at reversing the program’s fortunes in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Fans, alumni, and student-athletes should hopeful that new leadership will ignite a turnaround and restore pride in Lady Bulldog basketball.

The press conference will be open to the public and streamed live for those unable to attend in person. HBCU Gameday will report on the new hire on the day of the presser.

Former Fort Valley State linebacker Malik Harp will continue the rest of his HBCU football journey at South Carolina State, he announced Sunday on social media.

His decision comes after he entered the transfer portal earlier this month. On April 18, Harp received an official offer from the Bulldogs’ program before committing to the reigning MEAC champs.

“COMMITTED??? Go Dogs!” Harp wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

FVSU Career

Harp spent four seasons — although playing in only three — at FVSU, recording 115 tackles with 63 being solo, 19.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, seven pass deflections, one forced fumble, and one fumble return in 27 games with the program. Last season, Harp played in 10 games and totaled 39 tackles. The second highest of his Wildcats’ career, with 15 assists, six tackles for loss, two sacks, and one pass deflection.

Harp was part of a stingy FVSU defensive unit that finished second in total defense (21.6 ppg allowed), first in total defense (269.3 ypg), first in rush defense (52.4), eighth in pass defense (216.9), second in total sacks (38) and the league’s top two in limiting its opponents in first downs and third down conversions in the 2024 campaign. Fort Valley finished tied for third place in the SIAC behind league runner-up Clark Atlanta and eventual champion Miles last season.

Harp’s best season came in 2023 when he registered 70 tackles with 34 being solo, 13.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, two interceptions, and six pass deflections. After the 2023 campaign, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker earned second-team, All-SIAC defensive honors and was among the league’s top 10 in tackles for loss.

HBCU South Carolina State
Ready for the Next Level

Harp spoke with HBCU Gameday about why he chose to attend South Carolina State and the opportunities that come with playing at an FCS-level HBCU. “I chose SCSU because of their winning culture and family tradition. When I went on my visit, I felt nothing but genuine love and great energy. Playing under Coach Chennis Berry and this staff gives me room to grow on and off the field! I believe the jump to FCS will impact my chances tremendously. Being able to get more exposure at this level is something I always wanted. Linebacker Aaron Smith just signed a free agent deal to the New York Jets, so it’s a great opportunity!”

South Carolina State football finished the 2024 season with a 9-3 overall record and ended its season on the biggest stage in HBCU football, the Celebration Bowl. “It feels great to know that I can get an opportunity to play in a game like the Celebration Bowl. I am very humbled and excited to get to work so we can get back on that stage and compete for a championship!”

The Orlando, Fla., native joins a SCSU team that fielded a stout defense last season and a unit that will undoubtedly be one to watch in the 2025 campaign under second-year football coach Chennis Berry.

Columbia, SC native 803Fresh—whose name proudly reflects his 803 area code roots—recently brought his viral hit “Boots on the Ground” to South Carolina State University (SCSU) for an unforgettable music video shoot. With the famed Marching 101 Band, Divine 9 members, and a host of students and alumni in tow, the video celebrates HBCU culture and community with electrifying energy.

803Fresh, born and raised near Orangeburg in Wagner, SC, live-streamed on social media from the SCSU football field. “Iconic man, South Carolina State. Do you see that? (pointing to the scoreboard) Do you see the middle of that field? Do you know how much history has down here, man?” His humble pride was evident as he stood in the heart of one of South Carolina’s most historic HBCUs. “And for a little small old me, (from) a little small town called Wagner, South Carolina. It’s definitely different for me.”

Breakout Single

The artist’s breakout single gained traction through the “where them fans at?” trend—a call-and-response dance rooted in the celebratory spirit of Southern Black gatherings. Its catchy beat and commanding lyrics quickly became an anthem at Black trail rides, a growing cultural phenomenon that blends horseback riding with music, food, and community celebration. TikTok challenges and fan videos from events across the South cemented the song’s viral reach.

“Boots on the Ground” isn’t just a song—it’s a movement. With fans waving custom-printed church fans and stomping to the beat, the anthem echoes the soul of Southern Black traditions. “I’m just proud to be one of the representatives for South Carolina is actually doing something that’s positive. Man. We definitely promote peace. We promote positivity, man. So very overwhelming.” 803Fresh said on-site. “It’s overwhelming to see everybody that is showing up to support—it is dope.”

Marching 101’s thunderous brass and percussion brought the track to life in true HBCU fashion. “They got the band doing what they do. Come on, man,” 803Fresh exclaimed. He also joked about wanting to attend the HBCU while acknowledging the legacy of SCSU: “I wanted to come to State, but the way my bank account was set up, I couldn’t get it like that, so shouts out for them having me today, man. ”

The shoot concluded in Batesburg-Leesville, SC, but not before 803Fresh paid homage to the South Carolina State University community. “They gave me a hat, so I feel like I went here… I feel like alumni myself.”

As Black trail rides continue to gain national attention and HBCUs shine brighter in pop culture, 803Fresh’s ‘Boots on the Ground’ stands as a proud intersection of both movements.

His high school performance laid the foundation for his collegiate career at South Carolina State University. He continued to hone his skills and make significant contributions to the Bulldogs’ defense.

He was a finalist for the 2024 Blanchard-Rogers Trophy, an award presented by the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame to honor the top collegiate football player in the state. This accolade, often referred to as South Carolina’s Heisman, highlights his impact and excellence throughout the season.?

With his entry into the transfer portal, Hall has garnered attention from several Power Five programs. Analysts have identified South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida State as potential landing spots for the talented edge rusher. These programs offer Hall the opportunity to compete at a higher level and further develop his skills against top-tier competition. He is currently ranked as the ninth-best available edge rusher in the nation on 24/7.com.

South Carolina State standout forward and All MEAC performer Drayton Jones has entered the transfer portal and will continue his collegiate basketball career at Butler University. Jones shared the news with the Athletic on Tuesday and was reported on social media.

He averaged 12.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 56.4% from the field. Known for his physicality and touch around the basket, Jones quickly emerged as one of the top frontcourt players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

The South Carolina State Bulldogs concluded the 2024–25 men’s basketball season with a 20–13 overall record and an 11–3 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, earning a share of the MEAC regular-season title. Under third-year head coach Erik Martin, the Bulldogs demonstrated significant improvement, highlighted by a seven-game winning streak to close the regular season.

Narrow loss in MEAC Championship

In the MEAC tournament, South Carolina State secured victories over Coppin State and North Carolina Central before narrowly falling to top-seeded Norfolk State in the championship game. The team’s offensive prowess was evident, averaging nearly 80 points per game, ranking 49th nationally.

His most memorable performance came in December when he erupted for 34 points, eight rebounds and six blocks in a win over Charleston Southern. Jones was later named HBCU National Player of the Week by BOXTOROW in early March after leading S.C. State to back-to-back conference wins, including a crucial upset over then-MEAC leader Norfolk State.

Jones becomes the latest Bulldog to move to a high-major program via the transfer portal, highlighting the talent and development coming out of Orangeburg. He is expected to provide Butler with immediate help in the frontcourt as the Big East program looks to build momentum heading into next season.

The NFL career of Javon Hargrave, one of the best talents produced in HBCU football in recent decades, is at a crossroads.

Hargave was released by the San Francisco 49ers last week after spending a pair of seasons in San Francisco. Hargrave’s name has been floated as a possibility for many NFL squads, including the Jacksonville Jaguars, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders and Dallas Cowboys.

Javon Hargrave, a native of Salisbury, North Carolina, distinguished himself as a talented defensive lineman during his time at South Carolina State University (SCSU) from 2012 to 2015. Starting all 47 games, he amassed impressive statistics: 200 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, and 37 sacks. His junior year was particularly notable, leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and ranking third nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) with 16 sacks. This impressive performance earned him consecutive MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014 and 2015.

Javon Hargrave’s collegiate achievements paved the way for his selection in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played for four seasons. In March 2020, he signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. His impact was immediate; during the 2022 season, he recorded a career-best 11 sacks, contributing significantly to the Eagles’ defense and their journey to Super Bowl LVII.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster joined South Carolina State University President Alexander Conyers on Tuesday in announcing that the Orangeburg, SC HBCU has achieved Research 2 (R2) status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

“This is a defining moment in our university’s history, one that reflects our steadfast commitment to academic excellence, innovation and impactful research,” Conyers said in the announcement at the university’s Fine Arts Building. “Achieving R2 status is no small feat. In fact, we are one of only 139 institutions from more than 3,000 colleges and universities across the country who were evaluated for this designation.

“This is a testament to the dedication of our faculty, the hard work of our students and the unwavering support of our alumni, staff and community partners,” he said. “This designation places South Carolina State among the nation’s top-tiered research institutions, expanding our opportunities for federal funding, partnerships and groundbreaking discoveries that will benefit not only our university, but the entire state of South Carolina and beyond.”

The R2 status signifies a university with “high research activity,” meaning it spends at least $5 million on research and awards at least 20 research doctorates annually. The HBCU exceeded both criteria in 2023, devoting $7.8 million to research and awarding 25 doctoral degrees.

McMaster congratulated the university on achieving the milestone with a pledge to “keep this going.” “This institution is superior in many, many different ways at many different levels,” McMaster said in the announcement SC State’s Fine Arts Building. “As long as we work together – if we communicate, collaborate and cooperate — there is no end to what we can do.”

SC State is now the state’s fourth top-tier research university, joining Clemson University, the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina, all of which are Research 1 institutions. The R2 designation will allow SC State to compete for even more federal and private research funding.

HBCU R2 South Carolina State University

In addition to the university’s faculty scientists and researchers, both graduate and undergraduate students at SC State conduct research alongside faculty mentors.

“SC State University has long been committed to research excellence, investing in resources and expanding our capacity to drive innovation and discovery,” said Dr. Louis Whitesides, vice president for the university’s Public Service and Agriculture division and vice president for research. “Achieving R2 designation is a significant milestone, but it is also a reflection of what we have always known — our research enterprise is impactful and essential to advancing knowledge and solutions that benefit South Carolina, the nation and the world.

“This recognition affirms the dedication of our faculty, students and staff who continuously push the boundaries, and it strengthens our resolve to further elevate SC State’s land-grant mission of improving quality of life through research, education and public service,” Whitesides said.

Dr. Frederick Evans, SC State’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, described the occasion as celebrating a new chapter in the ongoing journey of innovation, excellence and community at the HBCU.

“We are committed to fostering an environment of growth, collaborations and empowerment for all who are part of our vibrant university community,” Evans said. “That’s all citizens in the state of South Carolina and the nation.”

CARROLLTON, Ga. – After promoting his offensive line coach to offensive coordinator, University of West Georgia head football coach Joel Taylor has announced the hiring of Na’Shan Goddard as the Wolves’ new offensive line coach. Goddard, an NFL veteran and experienced collegiate coach, comes to Carrollton by way of HBCU South Carolina State.

“I’ve known Na’Shan for years and I’m happy to finally get a chance to work with him. He brings an abundance of experience and championships, winning two Super Bowls at the professional level,” said Taylor. “He is a tremendous relationship builder and coach and UWG is proud to have him and his family join ours.”

After seven years at South Carolina State, Goddard is thrilled to join the Wolves’ staff to continue the transition to Division I and the FCS.

“I’m excited for this opportunity here at West Georgia, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to continue to mold young men on and off the field,” said Goddard.

HBCU NFL West Georgia South Carolina State

At SCSU, Goddard was a part of three Mid-Eastern Athletic (MEAC) titles and a 2021 Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl Championship where the Bulldogs were crowned HBCU National Champions. In 2023, the offensive line was ranked fifth (5th) in FCS National rankings in rushing average of 220 yards per game, with over 2600 rushing yards for the season. Last season, the Bulldogs won the MEAC title and advanced to the Cricket Wireless Celebration Bowl and had three HBCU BOXTOROW All-Americans, and four First Team All-Conference selections on the offensive line with the Offensive Lineman of the Year, Nick Taiste.

Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Goddard was with Newberry for two seasons. His first season was marked by the Wolves’ third SAC championship in program history and a berth in the NCAA Division II Football Championship. Goddard’s unit was instrumental to the team establishing new school records for scoring (436 points), passing yards (3,536), completions (287), passing touchdowns (30), completion percentage (67.8), total offense (5,462 yards), all-purpose yards (6,496), and total touchdowns (61).

Goddard’s unit followed up that exceptional season with another strong showing in 2017, led by senior center, and All-Super Region selection, Dakota Mozingo. He was also named the SAC Scholar-Athlete, given to the top-performing student-athlete in the conference in academics, athletics, and community service and leadership.

A native of Dayton, Ohio, Goddard began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants. He was there for three years, then had a brief stint with the New York Jets before being traded back to the Giants. He later played with Seattle and closed out his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. He earned Super Bowl rings with the Giants in 2008 and the Saints in 2010.

Goddard also played professionally with the Calgary Stampeders in the Canadian Football League and the Florida Tuskers and Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. He retired from pro football following the 2014 CFL season and is married to Stacy. The couple has two sons, NaSean and Naiden.

Na’Shan Goddard, a Super Bowl winner and key figure in South Carolina State’s offensive success, is taking his championship experience from the HBCU ranks to a new Division I FCS school.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, Goddard spent the past eight seasons at S.C. State, helping the Bulldogs capture multiple Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles and the 2021 HBCU National Championship.

Goddard’s impact at S.C. State was undeniable. As the Bulldogs’ offensive line coach and NFL Pro-Liaison, he helped mold one of the top rushing attacks in FCS. In 2023, his unit ranked fifth nationally, averaging 220 rushing yards per game and eclipsing 2,600 yards for the season. Under his leadership, S.C. State claimed another MEAC title in 2024, finishing as runner-up in the Celebration Bowl against Jackson State. His ability to develop linemen into dominant forces in HBCU football made him one of the most respected coaches at the position.

HBCU, Goddard
Goddard has been a constant at South Carolina State.

Prior to his time at S.C. State, Goddard coached at Newberry College, where his offensive lines helped set multiple school records, including scoring, passing yards, and total offense. His ability to build strong, disciplined units was evident throughout his tenure.

A former standout at South Carolina under legendary coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier, Goddard’s playing career took him from the SEC to the NFL, where he earned two Super Bowl rings. His experience at the highest levels of the game will now benefit West Georgia as it continues its transition into the Division I ranks.

Goddard’s departure is a loss for the HBCU runner-up, but his influence on the game continues to grow. His championship mindset, both at the HBCU and professional levels, will undoubtedly shape West Georgia’s offensive line for years to come.

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry announced Wednesday (Feb. 5th), the signing of sixteen (16) HBCU football prospects to national letters of intent (NLI) on National Signing Day. The class includes eight (8) transfers and eight (8) newcomers. This year’s class features five (5) signees from South Carolina, seven (7) Georgia, two (2) from Florida, one from Kentucky and one from North Carolina.

Three defensive backs, two running backs, three defensive linemen, three offensive linemen, three wide receivers, one quarterback, and one place kicker, make up the 2025 National Signing Day class.

“Go Dogs! It’s a great day to be a Bulldog,” said Berry. “As a staff, we were very intentional about this 2025 signing class as we blanketed the states of South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida to find the right fit of student-athletes for our culture.

“Our coaching staff did an amazing job of building relationships with the coaches in those areas, and from that time, we were able to sign a really good class that we feel super excited about as we prepare for the 2025 season”, continued Berry. “We are pleased with our start, as we signed eight dynamic high school players, as well as eight explosive transfers, all of whom fit our culture, our vision, our discipline as well as our process. “But, we are not done yet! This is only the beginning! Let’s get it. Go Dogs!”

Along with the new recruits, Berry will return All-MEAC performers on both sides of the football, including wide receiver Justin Smith-Brown, and defensive lineman Ashaad Hall, who ranked among the top players in the nation at his position.

In his first year at the helm of the Bulldog football program, Chennis Berry became the only coach in school history to guide his team to a conference championship in their first season. Along with making his mark in SC State Football history, Berry earned numerous accolades along the way, among them AFCA Coach of the Year, MEAC Coach of the Year, and a third straight selection to the HBCU Legacy Bowl coaching staff. His achievements included coaching the MEAC Offensive Lineman of the Year, MEAC Offensive Player of the Year, and HBCU+ National Player of the Year. The Bulldogs finished the season ranked #24 in Stats Perform FCS Top 25 poll, and compiled the top academic mark, — a 3.04 overall G.P.A — during the fall semester.

The LA Rams took care of business in the NFC Wildcard round of the NFL playoffs, and an HBCU product was a big reason why.

Former South Carolina State star Cobie Durant came up big in his team’s 27-9 win over the Minnesota Vikings, and made some history.

Cobie Durant not only came up with an interception, he also recorded a sack. He was just the third player for the LA Rams to do so in franchise history, and was the first defensive back to record a sack in the postseason in franchise history.

Durant is now in his fourth season with the LA Rams. He recorded 33 solo tackles and one interception during the 2024 regular season.

At SC State, Durant was a dominant force in the secondary, known for his elite ball-hawking skills and lockdown coverage. Over his collegiate career, he earned multiple accolades, including being named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. Durant’s performance against top-tier competition, including a memorable game against Clemson where he intercepted two passes, solidified his reputation as one of the best defensive backs in HBCU football.

Durant was drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. Transitioning seamlessly to the professional level, he has showcased his speed, instincts, and playmaking ability, contributing significantly to the Rams’ defense.

The LA Rams will take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

South Carolina State University, a cornerstone program in HBCU football, has turned to transfer quarterback Amari Jones to guide them into a new era. After finishing as runners-up in the 2024 Celebration Bowl, the Bulldogs are rebuilding their roster with hopes of returning to the top of the HBCU football world. Jones, a 6’3”, 225-pound redshirt junior, is expected to step into the leadership role left vacant by the departure of standout quarterback Eric Phoenix.

Jones joins South Carolina State after transferring from FIU, where he spent two seasons without seeing game action. While his collegiate experience has been limited, his high school career at Bradford High School in Starke, Florida, highlighted his potential. As a senior, Jones threw for 2,287 yards and 19 touchdowns while rushing for 371 yards and seven scores. His standout season earned him Florida 1A Player of the Year honors, along with school records for single-season and single-game passing yards.

Now at South Carolina State, Jones has an opportunity to make his mark at one of the most respected programs in HBCU football. For Jones, stepping into the MEAC and leading this championship-caliber program comes with significant expectations. His size, athleticism, and dual-threat capabilities make him a strong candidate to fill the role and help the team compete at the highest level.

The Bulldogs, under the guidance of Head Coach Chinnis Berry, remain focused on returning to the Celebration Bowl and reclaiming their championship status. As Jones takes on this challenge, he has the chance to cement his place in South Carolina State University’s storied history. Fans across the HBCU football community will be watching closely to see if Jones can rise to the occasion and lead the Bulldogs back to glory.

South Carolina State University, a powerhouse in HBCU football, has unveiled its 2025 schedule following a stellar 2024 season under first-year head coach Chennis Berry. The Bulldogs, reigning MEAC champions and HBCU national runners-up, are looking to build on their impressive 9-3 record. The 2025 slate promises challenges and opportunities as SC State sets its sights on another historic season in the world of HBCU athletics.

The Bulldogs will kick off their 2025 campaign at home on August 30 against Wofford, setting the stage for a mix of non-conference battles and pivotal MEAC clashes. A September 6 matchup at the University of South Carolina highlights the team’s early-season schedule, offering a chance to compete against an FBS opponent. On September 13, SC State returns home to face Bethune-Cookman, a historic HBCU rival, before hitting the road for another tough test against the University of South Florida on September 20.

Closing out September, SC State will travel to Charleston Southern on September 27. These non-conference matchups provide the Bulldogs an opportunity to sharpen their skills and bolster their national profile before diving into MEAC play.

These contests will be critical as SC State looks to defend its MEAC crown and secure its place in the HBCU national championship discussion.

The season wraps up with two tough road games: a November 15 showdown with North Carolina Central and a November 22 finale at Delaware State. Both games will test the Bulldogs as they aim to finish the regular season strong and position themselves for postseason glory.

With the leadership of Coach Chennis Berry and the program’s deep-rooted HBCU traditions, South Carolina State is poised for another electrifying season. The Bulldogs’ 2025 schedule is not just a roadmap but a challenge to solidify their status among HBCU football elites.

Jackson State University etched its name in HBCU football history with a commanding 21-point victory over South Carolina State in the 2024 Celebration Bowl. This triumph not only secured Jackson State’s first Celebration Bowl title but also tied the largest margin of victory in the game’s history. The 21-7 win was a moment of redemption for the Tigers, who lost to the Bulldogs in the 2021 matchup by the same margin.

The SWAC champions, led by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, showcased their offensive and defensive prowess. While the first quarter remained scoreless, Jackson State struck in the second quarter, scoring 14 points to take control of the game. Morgan was efficient under center, throwing for 219 yards and one touchdown, with wide receiver Joanes Fortilien hauling in a 4-yard scoring pass to open the Tigers’ account.

Dominance from Start to Finish

On the ground, running back Irv Mulligan delivered a standout performance with 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Jackson State outgained South Carolina State 367 yards to 135, including a staggering 148-16 advantage in rushing yards. The Tigers’ dominance in the trenches set the tone for the game.

A Relentless Defense

Jackson State’s defense was the backbone of their success, holding the MEAC champion Bulldogs to a mere 16 rushing yards on 18 attempts. Defensive standout A. Petty recorded a pivotal interception, while A. Taylor added a crucial sack as the Tigers repeatedly stifled South Carolina State’s offense. The Bulldogs, led by quarterback Eric Phoenix, struggled to find consistency, converting just one of 10 third-down attempts.

The defense also forced five three-and-outs and consistently pressured the Bulldogs’ offensive line, showcasing why Jackson State has become a force in HBCU football.

A Balanced Legacy

Jackson State’s Celebration Bowl victory is a defining moment for HBCU football, highlighting the program’s growth and determination. The Tigers’ ability to avenge their 2021 loss to South Carolina State demonstrates their evolution into a powerhouse program.

However, the game also underscores the competitive spirit of HBCU football, with South Carolina State continuing to represent the MEAC with pride. While the Tigers celebrate this historic win, both programs have elevated the profile of HBCU athletics, proving that the Celebration Bowl remains a premier showcase for Black college football on the national stage.

]]>
If you’re looking to bet on the highly anticipated Celebration Bowl featuring HBCU powerhouses Jackson State and South Carolina State, here are some tips to make informed decisions for this championship showdown that will determine the top team in HBCU football.

1. Evaluate Jackson State’s HBCU-Leading Defense

 • Why It Matters: Jackson State boasts one of the strongest defenses in HBCU football, allowing just 17.9 points per game and recording 34 sacks this season. It’s aggressive pass rush and secondary, which has 13 interceptions, could make it tough for South Carolina State’s passing attack.
 • Betting Tip: Consider betting on Jackson State against the spread (ATS), especially if they are modest favorites. A wager on the under may also hold value, given Jackson State’s ability to keep opponents’ scoring low.

2. Assess South Carolina State’s Explosive HBCU Offense

 • Why It Matters: South Carolina State averages an impressive 35.4 points per game, powered by quarterback Eric Phoenix and wide receiver Caden High. It’s red-zone efficiency and big-play ability make them one of the most potent offenses in HBCU and FCS football.
 • Betting Tip: If the over/under total is reasonable, betting the over might be a smart move, especially if you expect South Carolina State to challenge Jackson State’s defense with their high-scoring offense.

3. Turnovers Could Be Key in This HBCU Matchup

 • Why It Matters: Turnovers often determine the outcome in tightly contested HBCU games. Jackson State has an edge in turnover differential, with a disciplined offense and a defense that thrives on forcing mistakes. South Carolina State, while strong, has shown vulnerability in giveaways at times.
 • Betting Tip: Consider live bets on turnovers or even a defensive touchdown, as both teams are capable of game-changing plays in this HBCU classic.

4. Monitor the Running Game Battle

 • Why It Matters: The ground game will be critical in this HBCU showdown. Jackson State’s Irv Mulligan (1,174 yards) has been unstoppable at times, while South Carolina State relies on KZ Adams (497 yards) to balance their offense. Controlling the clock through rushing could decide the game.
 • Betting Tip: Prop bets on Mulligan’s rushing yards or touchdowns might offer great value, especially if Jackson State leans on its rushing attack.

5. Pay Attention to Special Teams

 • Why It Matters: Special teams often play a pivotal role in HBCU games, and Jackson State’s kicker Matt Noll provides consistency with 22 successful field goals. South Carolina State’s special teams also contribute to their overall game plan, but Jackson State’s edge could prove decisive.
 • Betting Tip: Look for props on total field goals made, as both teams’ defenses might force several red-zone stops, leading to kicking opportunities.

Final Thoughts

With HBCU pride and a national championship on the line, this game promises to be a thrilling battle. Whether betting on the spread, total, or prop bets, understanding each team’s strengths and weaknesses can help you make more informed choices. Always bet responsibly as you enjoy this showcase of HBCU excellence.

South Carolina State University capped off a historic MEAC season by exclaiming its 19th conference title with a resounding 53-21 victory over Norfolk State at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium. The win not only preserved the Bulldogs’ perfect conference record but also solidified their dominance in a season filled with explosive plays and defensive grit.

With starting quarterback Eric Phoenix sidelined with a walking boot, backup quarterback Ryan Stubblefield spearheaded the offense, throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns while adding two rushing scores. Running back K.Z. Adams was a key contributor, rushing for 128 yards and three touchdowns, including a 99-yard drive capped by a seven-yard touchdown that showcased the Bulldogs’ resilience and control. Wide receiver Justin Smith-Brown was a reliable target, recording 101 yards on seven receptions.

South Carolina State’s defense also shone brightly, holding Norfolk State scoreless for two quarters while forcing critical turnovers. Diego Addison’s interception and timely stops by the defensive line kept the Spartans at bay. Despite an impressive rushing performance by Norfolk State’s Kevon King, who tallied 144 yards and a touchdown, the Spartans were unable to sustain momentum against SCSU’s disciplined unit.

This victory sets the stage for South Carolina State’s return to the Celebration Bowl, where the Bulldogs will face the SWAC champion on December 7. Their opponent will be decided in the SWAC Championship Game between Jackson State and Southern, promising an electric showdown.

With their MEAC legacy firmly intact and sights set on another Celebration Bowl trophy, head coach Chennis Berry and his Bulldogs are poised to represent the conference with pride. South Carolina State now looks to add another chapter to its storied football history in Atlanta, aiming for national HBCU supremacy.

]]>
ORANGEBURG, SC — South Carolina State University was three years into the fledgling new HBCU conference — known as the MEAC — in 1974. That gritty squad brought home the first MEAC title in the school’s history.

Fifty years later, on a brisk Friday night, a group of nearly three dozen former players — including Pro Football Hall of Famer Harry Carson and recently retired SC State coach Buddy Pough — filed into the SHM Gymnasium to commemorate that championship season that laid the foundation for the most dominant program in the conference’s history.

In the middle of it all was Willie Jeffries. The now 87-year-old may not walk as swiftly as he did at age 37 as a young head coach, but his mind — and wit — was as sharp as ever and on display. He shared that he took an $8,000 pay cut to come back to his alma mater after serving as an assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.

“I went to the President and he said ‘that’s all we got,” he said as the crowd laughed. “But money isn’t everything. Look at you guys — got on new suits, dressed up, lovely wives, you have families. And coach is proud of all of you.”

Jeffries arrived to find a team that had won just one game during the 1972 season.

“Everybody had us on their homecoming. Everybody,” Jeffries said at the podium. “So many of ‘em — we took our own float.”

But he had talented players like Carson, Donnie Shell and a young man named Oliver that would go on to be better known as “Buddy.”

“He was cutting edge and approach to doing all of the latest techniques and fundamentals and all that kind of stuff of that time,” Buddy Pough, an offensive lineman on that 1974 championship team recalled. “He had been on the big time. He coached at Pittsburgh and some of the other places that way. So he had all of the different opportunities to be exposed to the latest trends in the game — that kind of stuff.”

The team nearly won it all Jeffries’ first season, but a tie against North Carolina A&T kept South Carolina’s HBCU from claiming the MEAC title that season.

Ironically, North Carolina A&T’s internal issues helped SCSU land Harry Carson. Carson was headed for NC A&T — or so he thought.

“I was offered a full scholarship,” Carson told the crowd on Friday. “But a week later, I got a message. I got a letter from North Carolina A&T. A letter to rescind the scholarship. I didn’t have anything else to do. I was looking at going to the military.

Luckily for Carson and South Carolina State University, a teacher helped him land in Orangeburg. A year later, Jeffries arrived and the rest is history.

As for the team, it came back more determined than ever the following year, knocking off two-time defending league champion North Carolina Central in an early November matchup to take control of the league. It clinched the title on Nov. 23, 1974, earning a bid to the Pelican Bowl — the first attempt by the MEAC and SWAC to create an HBCU title game.

Less than 24 hours after Friday’s gathering, the current South Carolina State football program was set to be crowned as MEAC champions for the 19th time in school history — the most for any MEAC program. And it will do so under the leadership of head coach Chennis Berry, who was hand-picked by Buddy Pough to keep the tradition going.

Bill Hamilton has worked at South Carolina State University in sports information for all 19 of the championships. He’s seen the program switch hands several times and he says there is a direct thread that combines the greatness of Jeffries and Pough — and now Chennis Berry. He related how Jeffries handed the program to Pough to how the keys were handed over to Chennis Berry.

“Coach Jeffries took him around, introduced him to you… know, he’s from this area, but took him to some to the powers that be and supported his every effort. And that’s unusual because a lot of times when a new coach comes in, he does not want the former coach hanging around looking over his shoulder and maybe sabotaging his success,” Hamilton said.

“And then now, 21 years later, Coach Pough, same thing. He reached out to coach Barry and he shown him around and offered him opportunities to be successful. So it’s a wonderful trade. That’s something you don’t see a lot. Not only in HBCU but in college athletics at all, because most people don’t want to go hanging around. But at South Carolina State, that’s a tradition.”

It is a tradition that is built upon what the 1974 team built in helping South Carolina State become one of the landmark programs in HBCU football and college football as a whole.

NORFOLK, Va. – South Carolina State University head football coach Chennis Berry was named the American Football Coaches Association’s (AFCA) 2024 FCS Region 2 Coach of the Year as announced by the organization Tuesday. Coach Berry collected his third AFCA Regional honor earning the accolade at the Division II level in 2022 and 2023 while at DII HBCU Benedict College.

In his first year leading the S.C. State Bulldogs, Chennis Berry led the team to an 8-2 overall record and 4-0 mark in MEAC play with one game outstanding. The Bulldogs secured the 2024 MEAC Champion Title on Saturday, Nov. 16, after defeating Morgan State 54-7, earning the conference’s berth in the 2024 Cricket Celebration Bowl.

Berry’s squad garnered multiple national awards including being named the HBCU+ FCS National Team of the Week (Sept. 9). The Bulldogs also moved into the National Polls for both Stats Perform and AFCA ranking 23rd and T-21st respectively in the most recent polls.

Quarterback Eric Phoenix was named the HBCU+ FCS National Player of the Week on Nov. 4, while numerous South Carolina State University Bulldogs collected MEAC weekly awards throughout the season.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, and NAIA. The winners are selected by Active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.

These winners will be honored on Monday, January 13, during the 2025 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

AFCA National Coach of the Year: The AFCA will announce the 2024 National Coaches of the Year winners in FBS, FCS, Division II, Division III and NAIA on Monday, December 16. The Regional winners in each division are finalists for National Coach of the Year.

Award History: The AFCA began recognizing district coaches of the year following the 1960 season. The awards were established the same year Eastman Kodak agreed to sponsor the AFCA Coach of the Year award. Prior to 1960, the Scripps-Howard newspaper chain had sponsored the program, which recognized one national Coach of the Year.

The AFCA first recognized eight district winners in each of two divisions: university and college. In 1972, a ninth district was added in each division. In 1983, the award was changed to recognize regional winners instead of district winners. The number of divisions was also increased from two to four and five regional winners were selected in each division. This resulted in a more equitable selection process and better represented the make-up of the membership. At the same time, the new system increased the number of honorees from 18 to 20. In 2006, the AFCA Division II Award was split into separate Division II and NAIA divisions, giving us the 25 winners we now recognize.

South Carolina State head coach Chennis Berry preaches sole focus on the task at hand, and it has paid off in the form of a MEAC title for the first-year coach.

As he talked with the media following his team’s 54-7 win over Morgan State, he reflected on the Bulldogs’ hard-fought path to clinching the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title. Despite the celebration, Berry’s focus shifted immediately to their upcoming showdown with Norfolk State.

“It’s a blessing to be in this position, but we’re not finished yet,” Berry said. “We have to keep our eyes on the next game and keep improving.”

South Carolina State secured the MEAC title with a combination of explosive offense and suffocating defense throughout the season. Quarterback Eric Phoenix has been the engine of the offense, throwing for 2,460 yards and 20 touchdowns while completing over 65 percent of his passes. Phoenix’s favorite target, Caden High, has been electrifying, catching 55 passes for 819 yards and seven touchdowns.

On the ground, Deondra Duehart provided a consistent rushing attack, leading the team with 443 yards and seven touchdowns, complemented by KZ Adams’ 369 yards. The offense averaged an impressive 418 yards per game, outscoring opponents by an average of 33.7 to 20.9 points.

“Our success comes from preparation and execution,” Berry said. “Every player understands their role, and we’ve committed to doing the little things right.”

The defense has been just as formidable, highlighted by linebacker Ashaad Hall’s 11 sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss. The unit has forced 13 interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns, with standout performances from defensive back Diego Addison and linebacker John Hannibal. Opponents struggled to find rhythm, averaging just 3.2 yards per rush and completing only 53.8% of passes against the Bulldogs.

Special teams have also contributed significantly, with kicker Kyle Gallegos converting eight field goals and the punt team allowing a net average of just 36.3 yards.

Despite the statistics and accolades, Berry remains focused on the fundamentals. The Bulldogs face a Norfolk State team known for its disciplined approach and opportunistic play. Berry emphasized that staying sharp is crucial.

“Norfolk State is a great program. They’ll make us pay if we lose focus,” Berry said. “We have to approach this week like any other, with the same intensity and preparation.”

South Carolina State’s MEAC journey has been marked by several defining moments. A thrilling 24-21 victory over North Carolina Central showcased the team’s ability to grind out tough wins, while their offensive firepower was on full display in a 69-35 rout of Delaware State.

“Our guys have shown incredible resilience,” Berry said. “They’ve stayed hungry, no matter the challenge.”

As the Bulldogs prepare for the Spartans, Berry’s message is clear: the MEAC title is just the beginning. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but the job isn’t done,” he said.

“We want to finish the season strong and continue to represent South Carolina State with pride.”

SC State will play the Jackson State-Southen University winner in the Celebration Bowl on Dec. 14.

HBCU blue blood South Carolina State clinched the MEAC regular season title in emphatic fashion on Saturday, demolishing Morgan State 54-7 at Hughes Stadium in Baltimore. The Bulldogs, under first-year head coach Chennis Berry, secured their second trip to the Celebration Bowl and their 19th MEAC championship in program history.

From the opening kickoff, the Bulldogs (8-2, 4-0 MEAC) dominated on both sides of the ball. Quarterbacks Eric Phoenix and Ronnie Stubblefield combined for three passing touchdowns, while the ground game piled up 241 rushing yards, led by Tyler Smith’s electrifying 86-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The defense also played lights out, forcing three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns by defensive standouts J. Washington and Diego Addison. The unit held the Bears (5-6, 2-2 MEAC) to just 78 rushing yards and only nine first downs in the game.

South Carolina State wasted no time asserting its dominance. A 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by Phoenix’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Julian Smith-Brown set the tone early. The Bulldogs erupted for 26 points in the second quarter, highlighted by Washington’s pick-six and a touchdown pass from Stubblefield to Caden High just before halftime.

Morgan State’s lone bright spot came on a short touchdown run by Ma Leatherbury in the second quarter, but it was far from enough to slow down the surging Bulldogs. Addison’s 100-yard interception return in the third quarter sealed the deal, and Deyandr Ruffin added a late rushing score for good measure.

This marks South Carolina State’s return to the Celebration Bowl, where they famously defeated Jackson State in 2021 for the HBCU national title. SC State will host Norfolk State next Saturday in Orangeburg to conclude the regular season, with its sights firmly set on another national title.
