Thursday night football just got a dose of brotherly love and HBCU energy.
Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson and Norfolk State’s Michael Vick — two former Eagles — meet under the lights at Lincoln Financial Field.
It’s not just a game; it’s a reunion, a showcase, and maybe the loudest Thursday night in MEAC history.

“He’s my brother. But this week… I can’t talk nothing good about him,” Jackson said during the Monday MEAC Coaches Call. “When it’s time to go to war, I don’t have friends.”

Vick laughed but matched the competitiveness.

“After the game, I’m going to give him a big hug and probably wrestle him down to the ground, win, lose or draw,” Vick said on the MEAC Call.

Delaware State: Riding High and Hungry

The Hornets (3-5, 1-1 MEAC) come in buzzing after a 35-26 win over North Carolina Central, their first conference victory of the season — and one that made the league take notice.

“We wanted to show the world what we’re capable of doing,” Jackson said on the MEAC Call. “Our guys showed how physical and hungry they can be.”

Quarterback Kaden Bennett threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns while Delaware State’s run game chewed clock like it was barbecue chicken. Jackson called the offensive approach “controlled chaos,” and he meant it — it’s loud, unpredictable, and somehow always works.

“You can’t be wrong in this offense,” Jackson explained on the MEAC Call. “Run, pass, or QB keep — we’ve got options.”

If you’re a linebacker, stretch before kickoff. You’ll be chasing ghosts.

Norfolk State: Rebuilding with Frustration

On the other sideline, Norfolk State (1-7, 0-2 MEAC) is still trying to find its footing under first-year head coach Michael Vick. The Spartans haven’t been on the right side of many games this fall, allowing more than 35 points per game while trying to build consistency on both sides of the ball.

It’s not about one bad bounce or a missed play — it’s about starting over, laying a foundation, and keeping faith through the grind.

“We’ve got to play four quarters of football,” Vick said on the MEAC Coaches Call. “The minute you take your foot off the pedal, somebody else will put theirs down.”

Vick’s challenge now is mental as much as physical — keeping his team locked in during a long season while they learn to compete for all 60 minutes.

“Every kid’s dream is to play in an NFL stadium,” he added on the MEAC Call. “Lay it all on the line.”

The Matchup

This one’s dripping with storylines:

 • Two former NFL stars now leading HBCU programs.
 • A short-week showdown with MEAC momentum on the line.
 • A prime-time slot in the heart of Philadelphia.

For Jackson, it’s about proving Delaware State isn’t just a good story — they’re a legit threat. For Vick, it’s about progress and patience as he tries to rebuild the Spartans into something that lasts.

“We don’t get caught up in records,” Jackson said during the MEAC Call. “We just want to show who we are.”

Keys to the Game

For Delaware State:

 • Keep the RPO game hot. If Bennett’s in rhythm, the Hornets hum.
 • Win time of possession. This team eats clock like it’s a pregame meal.
 • Don’t look ahead — Jackson preaches “keep the main thing the main thing.”

For Norfolk State:

 • Finish drives. Field goals won’t cut it against this DSU offense.
 • Limit big plays — easier said than done against Jackson’s “controlled chaos.”
 • Match energy for four quarters.
The Vibe in Philly

Philly’s no stranger to fireworks, and Thursday night should deliver plenty. Add in bands, fanbases, and old teammates turned rivals, and you’ve got a classic waiting to happen.

“Put me in whatever environment, I’m comfortable,” Jackson said on the MEAC Call. “I love the culture. I love our people.”

“This is a great opportunity,” Vick said on the Call. “You don’t normally get this — appreciate it and rise to the occasion.”

The Bigger Picture

No matter what the scoreboard says, this game means something.
It’s two Black head coaches — both NFL legends — leading HBCU programs on national TV, proving that growth, culture, and competition can share the same field.

Thursday night isn’t just about who wins. It’s about showing the world what HBCU football looks like when the lights come on and the stage belongs to them.

NORFOLK, Va. — South Carolina State spoiled Homecoming for Michael Vick and Norfolk State in front of a record-breaking crowd at William “Dick” Price Stadium, rolling to a 51–20 victory on Saturday afternoon. The announced attendance of 47,273 marked not only the largest in Norfolk State history but also the biggest home-field attendance in the FCS this season — a fitting stage for Vick’s debut Homecoming as head coach.

Dominant Second Quarter Breaks the Game Open

After falling behind 7–0 early, South Carolina State exploded for 35 points in the second quarter, overwhelming the Spartans on both sides of the ball. Quarterback William Atkins IV turned in one of the best passing performances of the HBCU season, throwing for 428 yards and four touchdowns on 24-of-36 passing. His favorite target, Jordan Smith, was nearly unstoppable, finishing with seven catches for 197 yards and two long touchdowns of 75 and 36 yards.

The Bulldogs trailed briefly after Norfolk State’s J.J. Evans caught a 22-yard touchdown from Otto Kuhns in the first quarter. From there, it was all South Carolina State. Mason Pickett-Hicks capped a 73-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown to give SCSU the lead for good, and Atkins IV followed with scoring strikes to Nigel Johnson, Smith, and Pickett-Hicks before halftime. The Bulldogs led 38–14 at the break, having outgained the Spartans 397–144 in the first half.

South Carolina State’s balance causes problems

South Carolina State’s offense piled up 613 total yards, with a balanced attack that saw 185 rushing yards complement the aerial assault. Running back Tyler Smith ran for 113 yards and a touchdown, while Pickett-Hicks added another score on the ground and one through the air. Kicker Nico Cavanillas Alti contributed three field goals to finish a perfect 3-for-3.

The Bulldogs dominated time of possession (37:52 to 22:08) and converted nine of 16 third downs. Defensively, they limited the Spartans to just one third-down conversion all afternoon and recorded three sacks and an interception by Josh Barker, which set up an early second-half field goal.

For Vick’s Norfolk State, the bright spots came from wideouts Evans and Xzavion Evans, who combined for all three Spartan touchdowns, including a 66-yarder late in the first half and a 48-yard strike in the fourth. However, the offense managed only 61 rushing yards and struggled to sustain drives against an aggressive Bulldog front.

Despite the loss, the electric Homecoming atmosphere and record crowd reflected renewed energy around the program under Vick’s leadership. A ticket was required for entry on campus, which explains why the listed attendance was more than 17k over the capacity of Dick Price Stadium. Many people never got within 100 feet of the stadium, but were counted nonetheless. But on this Saturday, South Carolina State (5–3, 1–0 MEAC) left Norfolk with the momentum — and the statement win — in a game that was as historic for its crowd as it was lopsided on the scoreboard.

When Nike unveiled the Yardrunners 6.0 Air Max ’95 collection, the sneakers immediately turned heads. But the real power of this campaign isn’t just in the design. It’s in the people. This year’s chapter in the Yardrunners story continues a full-circle tradition of HBCU alumni using their platforms to spotlight the next generation of trailblazers, creators, and leaders from their own community.

Alumni Building Alumni

The Yardrunners program began with a simple yet radical idea from two Howard University graduates, Richard Palmer and Arinze Emeagwali. They met on campus and bonded over their love of sneakers long before joining the Swoosh.

Years later, after each had built careers in marketing — Palmer with Jordan Brand and later Nike HQ, Emeagwali with Nike NYC — they reconnected to reshape how Nike engaged HBCUs.

In 2020, they pitched a concept that reimagined Nike’s “You Can’t Stop Us” message as “You Can’t Stop HBCUs.” Their goal was clear: to honor the people who make HBCUs thrive through authentic storytelling and design. From that idea came Yardrunners, a campaign that now serves as Nike’s bridge to the HBCU community.

Culture Carried Forward

That founding vision still guides the work today. Two HBCU alumni now lead the Yardrunners initiative within Nike. They collaborate with Black-led creative agencies such as League Twenty Two to ensure each release reflects the community’s authentic voice.

The imagery, language, and style now stretch far beyond product drops. Nike’s social channels, billboards, and editorial platforms feature real HBCU faces and stories. According to VIBE.com, the campaign’s purpose remains consistent — to elevate HBCU students and alumni through storytelling, products, and genuine collaboration.

HBCUs as the Heartbeat

This year’s Air Max ’95 Yardrunners 6.0 campaign spotlights four iconic institutions — Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Norfolk State University — and the people who represent their legacy.

At Florida A&M, Yardrunners captures the energy of Rattler Nation. Dr. Shelby Chipman, director of the Marching “100,” continues the school’s musical tradition.

At Spelman College, the Air Max 95 silhouette mirrors the grace and strength that define one of America’s most storied women’s colleges.

The campaign highlights Dr. Joyce Finch Johnson, Professor Emerita of Music and College Organist since 1955, whose presence has shaped the Spelman soundtrack for generations.

Eboni Ellis, founder of the Women in Hip Hop Collective, channels Spelman’s legacy of creative leadership, while Olivia Brown, flag-football captain, and Kamora Freeland, one of the youngest African American female pilots in U.S. history — and New York’s youngest licensed Black female pilot at 17 — represent how Spelman continues to open doors for the next generation of changemakers.

Legacy as a Loop

Each of these individuals carries forward what Yardrunners represents — HBCU excellence in motion. And each new campaign expands that circle.

From 2021’s HBCU dance showcase featuring Texas Southern alum Megan Thee Stallion, to 2023’s Morehouse Nike Terminator collaboration with Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins, to 2024’s “Started on the Yard” campaign narrated by Stephen A. Smith, Yardrunners has centered alumni who lift others as they climb.

That lineage continues with Yardrunners 6.0, which joins Nike’s growing collection of HBCU-driven releases. “When current students look back, they’ll be able to say Yardrunners was part of their HBCU experience,” said Palmer. “That means the world to us.”

Culture by the Culture

Yardrunners 6.0 isn’t a typical marketing campaign. It’s an ecosystem of alumni using creative power to spotlight others walking the same halls they once did.

From Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton to the brick yards of HBCU campuses, it shows that authenticity isn’t a trend — it’s the foundation of legacy.

Available October 11 at select retailers and on the SNKRS app October 14, Yardrunners 6.0 is more than a product drop. It’s a story of HBCU pride told by the people who live it.

Michael Vick is finding out that coaching at an HBCU is a different kind of challenge. The former NFL superstar, now in his first year leading the Norfolk State University Spartans, has seen his team battle hard but fall short repeatedly.

Saturday’s 41-34 loss to rival Hampton University marked the fourth straight defeat for Vick’s squad, capping a brutal stretch that has tested both his patience and perspective.

After the game, Vick faced reporters wearing a blue Hampton hat—one of the most painful accessories a Spartan coach could imagine.

“I lost a bet with my wife, who is a Hampton alumni,” Michael Vick admitted with a pained grin. “So yeah, working through the kinks of everything right now.”

The gesture lightened the mood after a bitter HBCU rivalry loss, but it also underscored a truth: the early part of Vick’s coaching tenure has been filled with growing pains.

Michael Vick

A Promising Start That Slipped Away

Michael Vick’s debut season as a HBCU head coach began with optimism. His team had 19k fans on a Thursday night opener against Towson and followed it up with a heart-thumping 34-31 overtime win against Virginia State in Week Two in the “Battle of The States.”

That win gave Michael Vick his first collegiate victory and seemed to signal a turnaround. But since then, the Spartans have stumbled in close fashion—falling 31-28 to Sacred Heart, 18-13 to Wagner, and now the seven-point heartbreaker at Hampton.

Against the Pirates, Norfolk State moved the ball effectively behind running back Xavion Evans, who carried 21 times for 93 yards and a touchdown. Yet, as Vick pointed out during the MEAC Football Coaches Call, turnovers and penalties remain the team’s undoing.

“It all boils down to the amount of penalties and the two turnovers,” Michael Vick said. “You take those two factors away, I think we get out of the stadium with a win… but unfortunately for us, we put ourselves in that position.”

The Spartans were flagged 17 times for 158 yards—numbers that erase offensive momentum and make comebacks nearly impossible.

Searching for Consistency and Control

Vick’s transition from quarterback to head coach means surrendering control of the action he once commanded. In the same MEAC call, he reflected on that difference.

“As a player, my coaches trusted me with the game plan,” he said. “Now, as a coach, I have to trust even more—that they understand the plan and that discipline is going to be primary.”

That trust has been tested through six games. The Spartans have committed 12 turnovers while forcing only five, a disparity that mirrors their 1-5 record. Still, Michael Vick insists the foundation is forming.

“It’s been a lot of good,” he said. “But it’s been a lot of penalties and turnovers. We can’t play football that way… when we do decide to play, we play a good brand of football.”

HBCU moves forward

The Battle of the Bay loss will sting, but Vick’s humility—and humor—show growth beyond the scoreboard. Wearing an HBCU rival’s hat might have been a friendly wager, yet it perfectly symbolized his first coaching months: humbling, instructive, and undeniably human.

Next up is a road trip to Wofford College, another chance for Michael Vick and his young team to align focus with execution. If the Spartans can turn their lessons into discipline, the losses—and the borrowed Hampton blue—might soon become part of a larger redemption story.

Michael Vick’s first season as head coach at Norfolk State has already been a crash course in the highs and lows of HBCU football. On Saturday, the Spartans looked poised for a breakthrough road win, but a hot start gave way to a second-half slide in an 18–13 loss to Wagner in Staten Island, New York.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Norfolk State (1–4) came out firing, building a two-touchdown lead behind a balanced offensive attack and opportunistic defense. But after halftime, Wagner flipped the script with 18 unanswered points, handing the Spartans their third straight defeat.

Fast Start, Tough Finish

After a scoreless first quarter, the HBCU Spartans struck in quick succession. Sophomore running back X’Zavion Evans broke free for a 14-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. Less than two minutes later, Kevon King powered in from one yard out, capping a short-field drive and giving Norfolk State a 13–0 advantage.

The defense set the tone early. Corey Chapman and Kaleb Broadbent each picked off passes, while the unit forced two fumbles and held the Seahawks scoreless through the first half. Terique Miles led the way with 10 tackles, while Chapman and Major Dillard each added nine stops.

But Wagner (1–4) stormed back in the second half. Quarterback Jordan Barton connected on a 62-yard strike to Malik Redd-Hubbard, then hit Johans Bars for a 24-yard touchdown as the Seahawks put up 12 unanswered points in the third quarterwag stats. A fourth-quarter scoring pass pushed Wagner ahead for good.

Norfolk State had chances late, but drives stalled, and Wagner’s defense held strong.

Offense Shows Balance

Quarterback Otto Kuhns went 17-of-28 for 119 yards and added 25 yards on the ground. Evans (24 yards, 1 TD) and King (48 yards, 1 TD) powered a run game that finished with 140 yards on 32 attempts. Jaylen Laudermilk chipped in 27 yards, and the Spartans averaged 4.4 yards per carry.

Through the air, DreSean Kendrick led all receivers with 33 yards on five catches, while Taron Biles-Walker, J.J. Evans, and Elyjah Mitchell each posted at least 25 receiving yardsnorf-stats.

Defensive Standouts in a Losing Effort

Defensively, Norfolk State forced four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries — and racked up multiple tackles for loss. David Ojiegbe finished with seven tackles, including a sack and 2.5 TFLs, while Broadbent added an interception.

Despite the defensive effort, Wagner outgained Norfolk State 397–288 and held the ball for more than 42 minutes.

Vick’s Early Tenure: A Mixed Bag

For Michael Vick, the early weeks at the helm have been about laying a foundation. Norfolk State opened the season with flashes of offensive creativity and defensive aggression, but consistency remains elusive. The Spartans have now dropped four of their first five games, including back-to-back heartbreakers decided in the final minutes.

Vick’s presence has injected national attention into the program and reignited interest in Norfolk State football across the HBCU landscape. But on the field, his team is learning how to close games — the kind of lesson that can define a coach’s debut season.

Norfolk State Michael Vick HBCU
Next Up: Battle of the Bay

The Spartans won’t have long to dwell on the loss. A rivalry showdown awaits on Saturday, Oct. 4, when Norfolk State travels to Hampton for the annual “Battle of the Bay.” Kickoff is set for 4 p.m., and the matchup promises to be another emotional chapter in one of the HBCU game’s most storied rivalries.

This won’t just be another game for Michael Vick — it will be his first Battle of the Bay as head coach, and it carries personal weight. Vick grew up just miles from both campuses in the Hampton Roads area, starring at Newport News’ Warwick High before becoming a national icon at Virginia Tech and in the NFL. Now, he’ll lead Norfolk State into a rivalry he grew up around, one that’s as much about community bragging rights as conference standing.

For 59 minutes, Norfolk State traded punches with Sacred Heart, clawing back from every miscue, every turnover, and every missed opportunity. But when the game rested on the leg of their kicker, the Spartans came up empty—wide right from 42 yards—as the Pioneers escaped with a 31-28 win on Saturday night. It was the cruelest ending yet for Michael Vick’s debut HBCU football season on the sidelines.

A Wild Back-and-Forth

Quarterback Otto Kuhns lit up William “Dick” Price Stadium, throwing for 340 yards and a touchdown. J.J. Evans (113 yards) and Kam’ryn Thomas (112 yards) both went over the century mark, while Kevon King ripped off a 57-yard score to ignite the crowd. X’Zavion Evans powered his way to two rushing touchdowns, and the Spartans racked up over 500 yards of offense.

But with every highlight came a mistake that tilted the night toward Sacred Heart. Three turnovers, two missed field goals—including one at the end of the first half—and several costly penalties left Norfolk State chasing momentum instead of seizing it.

The Pioneers capitalized each time. Jack Snyder’s 18-yard run opened the scoring, a scoop-and-score from Trey Eberhart flipped the game in the second quarter, and Mitchell Summers’ late touchdown run stretched the lead to 31-21 with just over five minutes left.

Norfolk State answered with urgency. Kuhns connected with DreSean Kendrick on a 29-yard strike to pull within three, and the defense forced a turnover on downs to give the offense one last shot. They got as far as the Sacred Heart 29-yard line, setting up the tying kick. Then, heartbreak.

Vick: “This One Hurt”

After the game, Michael Vick didn’t hide his frustration.

“Tonight, this one stung,” Vick admitted. “We put ourselves in position so many times to win the game… but you can’t turn the ball over three times, can’t miss two field goals. That’s a recipe for losing.”

Asked about the final drive, Vick praised his offense’s execution but circled back to the finish. “We did good things to put ourselves in position. I expect Evan to make those kicks, especially moving forward,” he said.

The missed chances weren’t just about the final kick. A botched 42-yard attempt before halftime, substitution penalties, and defensive lapses against the run all loomed large. “We really gave a game away,” Vick said flatly. “Momentum is a real thing. When you let a team hang around, you give them life.”

Finding Perspective

For Michael Vick, still molding Norfolk State’s culture in the national HBCU spotlight, Saturday’s loss was as much a teaching moment as it was a gut punch.

“He’s a young man trying to play the game at a high level,” Vick said of his kicker. “Everybody makes mistakes. It’s just unfortunate that in the position he’s in, he’s required to almost be perfect. He’ll be resilient. He’ll persevere.”

And despite the loss, the former NFL superstar turned HBCU football coach sees a path forward. “That’s a good football team in that locker room. They’re learning the hard way, but they’ll learn. This one touched them. This one hurt—as it should.”

What’s Next

Norfolk State travels to Staten Island next weekend to face Wagner. For Vick’s Spartans, the challenge isn’t just about winning the next game—it’s about learning how not to lose the ones already within their grasp.

“Football is about making plays when you’re supposed to make them,” Vick said. “We’ll button things up, keep working, and be ready next week.”

Nike is once again shining a spotlight on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its latest Yardrunners project. This time, the Swoosh pulls up with a bold collection of Air Max ’95s dedicated to four iconic HBCU institutions.

A Yardrunners Tradition Expands

Since 2020, Nike has shown love to HBCUs through the Yardrunners program, which was created to celebrate the legacies of HBCU institutions and the people they serve with footwear designed by alumni. On its fifth anniversary, the program is marking the occasion with what sneakernews.com calls its “most ambitious release yet:” a full lineup of four Air Max ’95s, each paying tribute to a different HBCU.

For Holiday 2025, the Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack highlights Spelman College, Morehouse College, Florida A&M University, and Norfolk State University. Each design pulls from school history, color palettes, and mascots—turning sneakers into wearable symbols of HBCU pride.

Earlier HBCU Releases by Nike

This new drop follows several high-profile collaborations. For example, Clark Atlanta University received its own Nike Dunk colorway in 2022. Howard University later showcased a Jordan Brand Air Jordan 4 Player Exclusive, complete with custom “HU” lace dubraes and school crest.

In addition, the Yardrunners 3.0 collection featured Dunk colorways and apparel timed with HBCU homecomings. The Terminator High HBCU Pack arrived in 2023, while Virginia Union University debuted an Air Force 1 release in 2024.

Details Behind the Drop

Morehouse pairs tiger-inspired red and black stripes with bold accents.
FAMU takes on green reptilian textures, a clear nod to the Rattler.
Spelman celebrates the jaguar with spotted dark and light blue suede.
Norfolk State opts for understated yellow hairy suede, representing Mr. Spartan.

Every sneaker comes dressed with school letter logos and founding years on the tongues, custom insoles with full school names, and even graphic treatments on the visible Air cushioning that mirror each pair’s overlay patterns—with Norfolk State being the lone exception. These extra design elements push the drop into collectors’ territory, blending heritage with modern sneaker aesthetics.

When and Where to Cop

The Yardrunners Air Max ’95 pack will be available during the Holiday 2025 season through Nike.com and select retailers. The retail price will be $190 per pair.

See what he has to say about the latest rumors.

Michael Vick, the legendary quarterback who once carried Virginia Tech to the 2000 BCS title game, now finds himself at the center of an unexpected coaching conversation. Just three games into his HBCU coaching tenure at Norfolk State, Vick is already being floated as a “wild card candidate” for the opening at Virginia Tech. The Hokies dismissed Brent Pry after an 0-3 start to his fourth season, a move that has triggered national speculation about the program’s next leader.

Virginia Tech Struggles Continue

Virginia Tech has been searching for stability ever since Frank Beamer retired. Justin Fuente started strong but fizzled, and Pry’s three-plus years yielded just 16 wins. After a blowout loss to Old Dominion, the Hokies’ administration decided to move in another direction. In an article for The Athletic, Bruce Feldman ran through a list of potential candidates, including Shane Beamer, Ryan Silverfield, Alex Golesh, Charles Huff, and Bob Chesney. Yet tucked into that list was a name that made headlines: Michael Vick.

For Hokie fans, Vick’s name instantly sparks nostalgia. He is, after all, perhaps the most electrifying player in school history, and his ties to Newport News and Hampton Roads would make him a recruiting powerhouse in Virginia. Still, the mention raised eyebrows given his brief résumé as a college coach.

Norfolk State Reality Check

At Norfolk State, Michael Vick is just beginning to carve his path. His Spartans sit at 1-2 after a humbling 60-10 loss to Rutgers, a reminder of the uphill battle that many HBCU programs face when taking on FBS opponents. Yet even in defeat, Vick pointed to positives — a running game that showed flashes and a defense that managed three sacks. “For us, it was all about coming out and competing,” Vick said. “We had some bright spots and some things that we can learn from, and I thought we competed hard.”

Michael Vick Virginia Tech HBCU Norfolk State

Asked directly by HBCU Gameday about his name being linked to the Virginia Tech vacancy, Vick didn’t flinch. “This team’s got to follow my lead,” he said. “My primary focus right now is Norfolk State. That’s all we can focus on. I hope they’re not reading the newspaper clippings or looking into what’s happening on the social pages, because I don’t do it. We’ve got Sacred Heart this week. That’s the most important thing in our lives right now.”

The Long Road Ahead

Vick’s comments reflect both his competitive drive and his awareness of the task in front of him. The Spartans have endured difficult years, and rebuilding the HBCU program will take time, discipline, and consistency. “I’ve got to continue to lead, I’ve got to continue to get better each and every day,” Vick emphasized.

Still, the Virginia Tech speculation is unlikely to fade. For a fan base desperate to rekindle the fire of its Beamer-era glory, the idea of Michael Vick roaming the sidelines in Blacksburg is tantalizing. Whether or not he is truly a candidate this early in his coaching career, the fact that his name surfaced at all underscores his enduring legacy in college football.

For now, though, Vick is clear: his heart and focus remain in Norfolk. The Hokies may eventually call, but his mission is to build something lasting at Norfolk State.

Michael Vick made it official this week: Otto Kuhns will be Norfolk State’s starting quarterback as the Spartans prepare for Rutgers. The first-year head coach addressed the decision during his weekly press conference, making clear that Kuhns had earned the nod.

“We’ll start the game this week with Otto,” Michael Vick said. “We’ll give him a chance to go out there and be out there from start to finish, hopefully. Behind his health, just go out there and try to relax and get a feel for the game.”

The move comes after Kuhns and Israel Carter both saw time in the opening weeks. Both times Carter started the game but Kuhns finished it, including a comeback win against Virginia State on Saturday. Vick acknowledged Carter’s progress but explained why the more experienced Kuhns will lead the offense.

“I don’t want a quarterback out there that’s somewhat frustrated and questioning certain things or not feeling comfortable. You’ve got to be comfortable playing the quarterback position,” Michael Vick noted.

Kuhns a mainstay at Norfolk State

The 23-year-old Kuhns was one of the holdovers from the Dawson Odums regime. He played in 19 games during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, starting all but one. He threw for 23 touchdowns and roughly 1800 yards during those two seasons before redshirting last year.

Carter was personally picked by Vick when he took over the program last winter, with a reportedly sizable investment made in securing his services.

Vick also praised Kuhns’ resilience, pointing to his maturity as a graduate student.

“I know Otto has a lot of reasons to be motivated. Every conversation that we’ve had leading up to this point, the one thing I respect about him is he speaks his mind,” Michael Vick explained.

Michael Vick hasn’t given up on Carter

Still, Vick emphasized that Carter remains an important part of the team’s plans.

“Now is the opportunity for Israel to learn vicariously and take every single rep serious, whether it’s on the second team, whether it’s on the scout team,” he said.

Drawing from his own career, Vick added: “That’s how I became the player I became in college—from getting good reps on the scout team and then taking it to live game action.”

As the Spartans head into a high-profile matchup with Rutgers, the decision reflects Vick’s intent to give his team stability at the most important position.

There’s a quarterback controversy in Norfolk, and it’s heating up fast. Norfolk State pulled off a dramatic comeback victory over rival Virginia State, erasing a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to win in overtime to give head coach Michael Vick his first win as an HBCU head coach. The Spartans entered the contest as favorites, but the Trojans made them earn every inch of it in a game that lived up to its rivalry billing.

The difference-maker? Backup quarterback Otto Kuhns. Thrust into action late, Kuhns delivered a performance that may have permanently shifted the Spartans’ quarterback room.

With Norfolk State trailing by double digits in the fourth, Kuhns took over and immediately provided a spark for his HBCU. The senior gunslinger threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns in the final quarter alone, rallying the Spartans back into the game before sealing the win in overtime.

Déjà Vu After Towson Opener

For Norfolk State fans, the déjà vu was impossible to miss. Just a week earlier, Kuhns was pressed into service against Towson after the offense sputtered. Despite the Spartans falling short in that opener, Kuhns showed flashes of promise, completing 19 of 27 passes for over 200 yards at a 70 percent clip.

That performance planted seeds of intrigue, and his heroics against Virginia State may have just watered them into a full-blown quarterback controversy.

Head coach Michael Vick, who earned his first career win at the helm of Norfolk State, didn’t shy away from acknowledging the spark Kuhns provided.

“I felt like we needed a spark,” Vick told the media. “We needed some energy, and I knew I could go to this guy. Otto gave us life when we needed it. He stayed patient, trusted the process, and delivered. That’s all you can ask from your backup quarterback.”

Kuhns’ Confidence and Leadership Shine Through

Kuhns, calm but confident at the podium, echoed the sentiment. “It wasn’t over,” he said of entering the game with his team down double digits. “I told the guys we had plenty of time. You can score three, four touchdowns in a quarter. I just wanted to keep their spirits high, and once we started making plays, you could feel the energy shift from the sidelines to the stands.”

That energy was undeniable. As the Spartans rallied, the home crowd roared louder with every completion and every touchdown drive. Vick admitted the fans were a factor: “I thought the fan support today was amazing. When you’re in a rivalry game like this, it’s going to be amped up, but when you’re making plays to come back, that gets the crowd going. And Otto gave us that energy.”

Still, Michael Vick said he’ll take his time before naming a permanent starter. “We’ve got to make the best decision for the team moving forward,” Vick said. “Otto has put himself in an amazing position to compete. He’s earned that. But it’s about consistency, and we’ll see how this week plays out.”

Spotlight on Kuhns Moving Forward

The win not only gave Norfolk State bragging rights in this heated HBCU rivalry but also raised expectations for a program looking to climb in the MEAC standings. The Spartans’ defense showed resilience, and the offense finally found rhythm in crunch time. All signs that brighter days may be ahead.

Still, the spotlight belongs to Kuhns. From late-game heroics to steady numbers across two straight weeks, he has made his case loud and clear. Now, all eyes turn to Norfolk: Will Michael Vick hand him the keys as QB1? One thing is certain — the Spartans’ season just got a whole lot more interesting.

The Michael Vick era at Norfolk State kicked off under the bright lights of William “Dick” Price Stadium with 19,469 fans in attendance—the largest non-homecoming crowd since 2023. While the Spartans ultimately fell 27-7 to Towson in Vick’s coaching debut, the night marked a significant moment in the program’s history and gave fans a glimpse of the future under the former NFL star.

Here’s a brief look at the game and three takeaways from Vick’s first outing as a head coach.

Game Summary

Norfolk State’s offense struggled out of the gate, going scoreless through three quarters before finally finding the end zone in the fourth. Quarterback Jaylen Laudermilk capped a five-play, 43-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run, cutting the Towson lead to 13-7 early in the final quarter.

However, Towson responded with back-to-back touchdown passes from Andrew Indorf to Zay Perkins and John Dunmore, putting the game out of reach. The Tigers outgained the Spartans 323 to 279 in total yardage and held them to just 39 rushing yards on 31 attempts. Norfolk State had several promising drives but came up empty in three red-zone opportunities.

Despite the loss, the electric atmosphere and defensive grit offered silver linings.

1. Michael Vick Praises Defensive Effort Despite Loss

While the scoreboard showed 27 points allowed, Vick had high praise for his defense, particularly its ability to keep the game close into the fourth quarter.

“The defense played great. Defense did a lot of good things, and I’m very proud of them,” Vick said. “We were in the game with 10 minutes left… just needed a couple of plays to go our way”.

The Spartans forced a key fumble, logged three sacks, and broke up four passes. Vick also noted multiple missed interception chances that could have turned the game.

“We were banking on getting two turnovers this game. That was a moment for us, and we didn’t capitalize on it,” he added.

2. Offensive Struggles Start with the Run Game

NSU ran for just 39 net yards—a stat that Vick was quick to highlight postgame.

“You can’t rush for 39 yards and think you’re going to win a lot of football games. We got to control the line of scrimmage,” he said.

Quarterbacks Otto Kuhns and Israel Carter combined for 240 passing yards, with DreSean Kendrick and Kam’Ryn Thomas combining for 230 of those. But penalties and red-zone inefficiency killed drives. Vick acknowledged the play-calling needs to be more balanced and productive.

“We shot ourselves in the foot… every time we made a play, it was a penalty,” he said. “We’ve got to self-correct.”

3. Both Quarterbacks Will Play

Vick used both quarterbacks throughout the game, giving fans a taste of what may become a back-and-forth situation moving forward.

“We’ve got two good quarterbacks,” Vick said. “Israel will be back out there, but Otto came in and did some great things. We’ll keep evaluating”.

Kuhns threw for 219 yards, completing 19 of 27 passes, while Carter added 21 yards in limited action.

Michael Vick looks ahead

Despite the loss, Michael Vick remained optimistic and reflective.

“I got a feel for the flow, what to look for… now I know where we’ve got to get better,” he said. “We’ll be a lot better next week”.

The Spartans (0-1) return to Dick Price Stadium next week to face in-state rival Virginia State. With opening night nerves out of the way and film in hand, Vick and Norfolk State look to turn lessons learned into wins.

HBCU Secures Coveted Carnegie Classification https://hbcugameday.com/2025/08/19/hbcu-secures-coveted-carnegie-classification/ https://hbcugameday.com/2025/08/19/hbcu-secures-coveted-carnegie-classification/#respond Tue, 19 Aug 2025 14:47:01 +0000 https://hbcugameday.com/?p=148644 Norfolk State’s new Carnegie designation places the HBCU among top U.S. research universities, driving innovation and recognition.

The post HBCU Secures Coveted Carnegie Classification appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Norfolk State University (NSU) recently joined an elite tier of American higher education. The HBCU, long recognized for its teaching mission, has been newly classified as a Research College and University (RCU) by the American Council of Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The designation places NSU in the top 12 percent of colleges and universities nationwide—a milestone underscoring the growth of research capacity at HBCUs.

A New Standard of Recognition

“This recognition affirms Norfolk State University as a serious research institution,” said NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston. “We are proud to be one of just over 500 schools in the nation to reach Carnegie Research classification.”

Until recently, NSU’s Carnegie designation was tied primarily to its master’s degree programs. The revised methodology—announced jointly by ACE and Carnegie—introduced a broader framework intended to capture the “multifaceted, wide-ranging research landscape” of U.S. higher education. For NSU, the change highlighted a record of achievement that had previously gone unmeasured.

The Office of the Provost noted that the new classification recognizes NSU’s doctoral programs and more than $30 million in annual grant activity. Faculty members are conducting research in advanced fields such as nanotechnology, quantum computing, and environmental studies of Virginia’s Elizabeth River. “Our faculty are submitting proposals and securing awards at an unprecedented pace,” the Provost’s office said.

The RCU Designation

Carnegie’s 2025 research activity designations are divided into three tiers. Research 1 institutions must surpass $50 million in research expenditures and award at least 70 research doctorates annually. Research 2 institutions must meet thresholds of $5 million and 20 doctorates. The new RCU designation recognizes institutions that do not reach R1 or R2 benchmarks but spend at least $2.5 million annually on research. Two hundred and sixteen institutions, including Norfolk State, currently hold the classification.

Timothy F.C. Knowles, president of the Carnegie Foundation, said the revisions were overdue. “These updates are the first step to bring a decades-old system into the 21st century,” Knowles said. “We are expanding our recognition of the range of ways colleges and universities engage in research and development. Over time, this will be good for the sector, for scholarship, for policymakers, and for students.”

HBCU Norfolk State University Carnegie Research College and University
A Path Toward R2

For Norfolk State, the designation is both a validation and a challenge. Administrators see the RCU classification as a stepping stone toward R2 status, which would place the HBCU among the nation’s high-research universities. “We’re on the precipice of meeting the criteria for R2,” the Provost’s office said, citing the university’s trajectory in research spending and doctoral training.

That prospect carries weight not only for the university but also for the broader HBCU community. Historically Black institutions have often been overlooked in research rankings, despite conducting work with direct social, environmental, and technological impact. Norfolk State’s recognition suggests that narrative may be shifting.

“The research we are producing raises the level for our students and impacts the wider society,” President Adams-Gaston said. “This designation affirms our place in the national research conversation.”

ESPN’s First Take is going all in on HBCU coverage this fall with its most ambitious schedule yet. The popular debate show, hosted by Stephen A. Smith — himself a proud HBCU graduate of Winston-Salem State University — will spotlight four campuses and events across the country. The schedule includes two storylines that tie directly into the historic coaching debuts of former NFL stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson.

Michael Vick headlines ESPN’s First Take Start

The season kicks off on August 28 at Norfolk State University, setting the stage for Michael Vick’s first game as head coach of the Spartans. Few names in football resonate more strongly than Vick, a Virginia native whose career electrified both college and professional football. His arrival at Norfolk State has drawn national attention, and First Take is positioning itself front and center.

By choosing Norfolk State as its first stop, First Take highlights not only the excitement around Michael Vick but also the growing spotlight on HBCU athletics. For Norfolk State, this marks a pivotal moment in both football and institutional visibility.

Classic Rivalries on National Television

On October 24, First Take will broadcast live from Birmingham, Alabama, at the Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola. The annual matchup between Alabama State and Alabama A&M is the largest HBCU football classic in the nation, drawing tens of thousands of fans. Featuring the show in the heart of this tradition underscores ESPN’s commitment to amplifying HBCU culture, rivalries, and pageantry.

DeSean Jackson,

Vick vs. Jackson: A Showdown of Former Eagles

Just five days later, on October 29, First Take will set up at Delaware State University, ahead of one of the most intriguing storylines of the season. Michael Vick’s Norfolk State team will face Delaware State, led by new head coach DeSean Jackson. The two were teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles, and their matchup at Lincoln Financial Field provides the perfect stage for an HBCU coaching battle with national implications.

The buildup to this contest not only puts Michael Vick back in the spotlight but also showcases how HBCU football continues to attract high-profile figures. For fans of both pro and college football, this game offers crossover appeal like never before.

Closing Out at Bethune-Cookman

The fall schedule concludes on November 20 at Bethune-Cookman University ahead of the Florida Blue Classic. Known for its proud football tradition and legendary band, Bethune-Cookman represents another cornerstone of HBCU culture. The stop ensures First Take’s tour covers multiple regions of the HBCU landscape, from the Mid-Atlantic to the Deep South.

ESPN Elevating HBCUs on the National Stage

For Stephen A. Smith, who often speaks passionately about his own HBCU experience, this expanded schedule is more than television programming. It’s a celebration of historically Black colleges and their role in shaping sports, culture, and leadership. By featuring Michael Vick’s debut, DeSean Jackson’s coaching rise, and iconic HBCU classics, First Takesignals a growing national investment in stories that matter to HBCU communities.

With football legends on the sidelines and First Take on campus, fall 2025 promises to be a season where HBCUs take center stage like never before.

It started as a casual game of toss, but the internet turned it into a reunion highlight. Michael Vick, smooth in a green polo and cap, zipped short passes to DeSean Jackson outside the Philadelphia Eagles’ complex. After laughing through a few light routes, Jackson eventually traded his T-shirt for a sports coat — not for game day, but for the press conference podium. The clip felt like a throwback to their Philadelphia Eagles glory days, but this wasn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It was a teaser for a history-making moment in HBCU football.

Old Friends, New Sidelines

Vick and Jackson haven’t shared an NFL huddle in over a decade, but now they’re teammates in a different arena: the HBCU head coaching ranks. Vick leads Norfolk State, Jackson helms Delaware State, and on October 30, their squads will meet at Lincoln Financial Field — a massive stage for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

“The Linc gets crazy already,” Jackson said. “Now you’ve got two legends. It’s going to be hype.”

For the programs, it’s exposure. For the coaches, it’s a chance to create new Philly memories from the sidelines.

From Playmakers to Mentors

Neither took the traditional route to coaching. Like Deion Sanders and Eddie George, they skipped the assistant grind, bringing NFL pedigree and presence straight to the head seat.

Michael Vick’s been quietly preparing for years, running youth camps, coaching his daughter’s flag football team, and embracing the idea of developing young talent.

“It was always in me to be with a group of young men, to develop them, see how they transition over a three-month period, a six-month period, a 12-month period,” Vick said.

DeSean Jackson admits coaching wasn’t part of the plan, but after advice from Sanders, he jumped in fully.

“Without Deion’s success, our success would never be presented to us,” Jackson said. “To have all the information and the knowledge we have, it would be selfish for us not to give back.”

Bigger Than a Scoreboard

Norfolk State hasn’t made the FCS playoffs since 1997. Delaware State is coming off a 1-11 season. The Oct. 30 game won’t fix those records overnight — but it could be the spark for recruiting, funding, and a culture shift.

The two call each other brothers. And while they’ll be on opposite sidelines, they’re aiming for the same win: pushing HBCU football to bigger stages.

“There are a lot of things we could be doing,” Vick said. “But we chose to go down this route… it will be a success.”

When Vick and Jackson share a field in Philly, history suggests something unforgettable is coming — whether it’s a deep ball or a deep impact on HBCU football.

Rod Bell, a proud graduate of Norfolk State University, is gearing up for a journey unlike any other. On August 24, 2025, he will fire up his custom NSU-themed motorcycle and set out to visit over 100 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. This RIDE4MYHBCUs mission isn’t just about turning heads. It’s about turning generosity into tangible change. Bell’s goal is bold: raise $10 million+ for HBCUs by motivating alumni and supporters to give back.

Why This Ride Matters

HBCUs were founded before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide higher education for African Americans when most other institutions shut them out. These schools have produced generations of Black leaders, professionals, and changemakers—but they continue to face significant funding disparities.

Bell believes the time for talk has passed. “It is not to bring awareness to HBCUs because people know about them now,” he said. “It’s about motivating those to give and donate—and inspiring alumni to give back to their schools.”

The $10 Million Plan

Bell’s math is simple, but powerful:

 • 1,006 alumni from each HBCU donate $106 to their school (or to Bell’s NSU endowment).
 • That’s $106,636 per school.
 • Multiply by 106 schools = $11,303,416 total.

Those funds could provide scholarships, upgrade facilities, and strengthen programs for the next generation of leaders.

How to Support

There are several ways to join Bell’s mission:

The arrival of former NFL star Michael Vick as head coach at Norfolk State has brought fresh energy and national attention to the HBCU football program. As excitement builds, university and city officials expect larger game day crowds at Dick Price Stadium. To prepare, Norfolk State, the City of Norfolk, and Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) have teamed up to create smoother parking and transit options for fans.

Free Parking and Transit for Spartan Fans

HRT will offer free parking at both the MacArthur South and North garages for all home games. From there, Norfolk State buses will shuttle fans directly to the stadium, giving supporters an easy alternative to campus parking.

Additionally, The Tide light rail will provide free rides two hours before and after each game. Fans can use the NSU Station or Ballentine/Broad Creek Station—both a short walk from the stadium. Officials urge everyone to stay safe by using marked crosswalks and sidewalks near tracks.

Home Schedule for Michael Vick and the Spartans

With Michael Vick leading the way, Norfolk State will host five home games in 2025 that should attract heavy attention across the HBCU landscape. The Spartans open at home against Towson on Thursday, August 28 at 7 p.m. They’ll return for a heated “Battle of the States” against Virginia State on Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m.

Family Weekend features a matchup with Sacred Heart on Saturday, September 20 at 4 p.m. Later in the season, Homecoming brings South Carolina State to town on Saturday, October 25 at 2 p.m. The Spartans close the home slate against Morgan State on Saturday, November 15 at 12 p.m., which also includes Senior Day and Military Appreciation celebrations.

With Michael Vick at the helm and support growing by the week, Norfolk State is ready to put on a show. This season could mark a major turning point for HBCU football in Virginia—and the Spartan faithful will be there to witness it.

Tory Woodbury, an HBCU legend and current assistant at Norfolk State, is heading back to the NFL—at least for the summer. The special teams coordinator has been selected as a Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellow by the Minnesota Vikings, marking a major step in his coaching journey.

A Return to the Bill Walsh Fellowship

This marks the second time that Woodbury has earned the opportunity. He first participated in the program in 2024 while serving on the staff at Howard University. The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship is designed to give minority coaches immersive experiences during NFL training camps and offseason activities.

Tory Woodbury Morgan State

HBCU Star Turned NFL Player

Woodbury first made his name at Winston-Salem State University. After walking on, he led the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles. He passed for over 4,500 yards, rushed for more than 1,000 yards, and tied the school record with 60 total touchdowns.

His stellar performance caught the attention of NFL scouts. Woodbury signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He later spent time with the Saints, the Bills, and in the CFL, becoming known as a special teams ace.

Building an HBCU-to-NFL Pipeline

After his playing career, Woodbury made a successful transition to coaching and scouting. He spent five years with the Los Angeles Rams, including time as an assistant special teams coach, and was part of the Super Bowl LVI championship staff. He then moved into HBCU coaching roles—starting at Morgan State in 2022, then Howard in 2024, and finally joining Michael Vick’s staff at Norfolk State in 2025.

His career reflects the growing connection between NFL and HBCU coaching talent. As more HBCU coaches earn NFL exposure, the pathway from HBCU sidelines to NFL opportunities becomes more defined.

What It Means for Norfolk State

Woodbury’s time with the Vikings could pay immediate dividends for Norfolk State’s special teams. He will return with refined knowledge of NFL situational drills, data-driven strategies, and personnel evaluation. These tools can directly impact kick coverage, return schemes, and overall special teams execution.

Additionally, his NFL ties may help Norfolk State in recruiting. Connections at the pro level often elevate program credibility, helping attract both players and assistant coaches.

A Spotlight on HBCU Excellence

The NFL’s continued investment in HBCU coaching talent is no accident. Tory Woodbury’s inclusion in this year’s fellowship signals a commitment to diversifying NFL coaching pipelines—and a recognition of the wealth of talent cultivated at HBCUs.

Norfolk State head coach Michael Vick has added another weapon to his arsenal. Signing former Auburn wide receiver and 4-star high school recruit JJ Evans. No, it’s not that J.J. Evans. There’s no “Dyn-o-mite!” catchphrase here—just dynamite upside. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound wideout from Montevallo, Alabama, arrives in Norfolk with one last shot to make the most of a college football career that once made SEC recruiters salivate. Under the guidance of an NFL icon-turned-HBCU head coach, this pairing could be just the spark that both Evans and Norfolk State are looking for.

From Hype to Humble: The JJ Evans Journey

Coming out of Montevallo High School, Evans was that guy. As a junior, he racked up an eye-popping 74 catches for 1,706 yards and 18 touchdowns. Helping his squad to the Alabama Class 4A playoffs. His blend of size, body control, and natural hands drew comparisons to former UNC and Cleveland Browns wideout Bug Howard.

24/7Sports’ John Garcia Jr. raved about Evans’ physicality, catch radius, and red-zone potential. His defensive background only added to his toughness. He was the No. 5 prospect in Alabama and had SEC coaches lined up to sign him.

Auburn won the sweepstakes—but Evans never got off the runway. After three seasons in the SEC with Auburn without recording a stat, he transferred to North Alabama, where he showed flashes: 17 receptions, 139 yards, and three scores in 2023, including a touchdown against No. 4 Florida State. Unfortunately, 2024 brought more struggles—seven appearances and zero stats.

Now or Never: Evans Finds Redemption in HBCU Football

That’s where Michael Vick steps in. The NFL legend, now calling the shots at Norfolk State, has made waves across the HBCU landscape. And in Evans, he sees a project worth investing in—a once-hyped prospect with Power Five DNA and something to prove.

Vick knows better than anyone what it’s like to live under the spotlight, stumble, and fight back. Evans’ second chance comes in green and gold, with one final season to show the world why he was a 4-star star in the making.

Norfolk State has been one of the hottest programs in HBCU football. Adding a hungry, physical wide receiver like Evans gives Vick’s offense a potential matchup nightmare on the outside. If he can tap into the flashes from his prep and North Alabama days, Evans might finally live up to the hype.

After all, who better to lead a comeback story than the man who wrote one himself?

Philadelphia Eagles legend LeSean McCoy will be teaming up with two of his former teammates-turned-HBCU coaches. The two-time All-Pro running back, will serve as a special guest host for the 2025 MEAC Football Media Day. The event takes place on July 22 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the home of the NFL’s Ravens.

This year marks a major change. For decades, the MEAC held its media day in Norfolk, Virginia. Now, the event moves to an NFL venue, reflecting the league’s commitment to raising the profile of its HBCU programs.

Philadelphia Eagles trio re-unites

LeSean McCoy’s appearance is more than just a celebrity booking. He was a teammate of both Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson, two new MEAC head coaches. Vick now leads Norfolk State, while Jackson is the head coach at Delaware State. All three were teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles, and McCoy co-hosted the podcast 25/10 with Jackson.

Their shared NFL experience brings national relevance to the MEAC, highlighting the conference’s growing relationship with professional football.

HBCU conference steps into the limelight

The MEAC features six football-playing HBCU institutions. Its programs have produced generations of NFL athletes, civic leaders, and cultural icons. Commissioner Sonja Stills praised the move to Baltimore, calling it “a historic milestone” that showcases the MEAC’s “growing visibility, strength, and momentum.”

NFL leadership also supports the move. “Bringing MEAC Football Media Day to M&T Bank Stadium continues the longstanding NFL relationship with HBCUs,” said Troy Vincent, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

A Showcase for the Season Ahead
Veteran ESPN personalities Tiffany Greene and Jay Walker will host the event live on ESPN+. Coaches and players from all six MEAC football teams will be in attendance. They’ll share insights and expectations for the upcoming season, which kicks off August 23 with the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

LeSean McCoy’s presence adds star power to an event already full of tradition and promise. For fans of HBCU football and the Philadelphia Eagles alike, this year’s media day offers something special—a celebration of past greatness and a preview of what’s ahead.

When the football season unfolds at Norfolk State University this fall, Michael Vick won’t be taking any snaps at quarterback. But that’s not stopping the former NFL All-Pro QB from showing the staff at Norfolk State that he still has an elite arm at 45 years old.

Vick posted to Instagram a throwing contest between himself and Demarcus McMillan, the Director of Football Operations for Norfolk State. The two were throwing at a football net set up with three unique targets at the back of the endzone. Throwing from roughly the ten-yard line, hitting the target made it a 20-yard challenge.

Stepping up in the “pocket” Vick threw a perfect laser right into the upper right target of the net. A perfect strike. Vick seemed to offer McMillan the chance to hit any part of the net to stay alive in the game. As you can see in the Instagram video above, McMillan knew he was off target as soon as the ball left his hands.

McMillan, brings a unique blend of discipline and leadership to the Norfolk State program. A decorated military veteran with over 22 years of service, McMillan transitioned into athletics through youth football and operations roles.

Vick repeated his accuracy a second time zipping the ball through the same target once again.

This isn’t the first time that McMillan has stepped on the field with some friendly competition amongst the staff.

Back in June McMillan lined up at defensive back to try and shut down boxing champion Terence Crawford with Michael Vick throwing passes. It didn’t work.

On one route Crawford was jammed at the line, but broke free to catch a perfectly placed over-the-shoulder pass from Vick. Crawford also ran a quick slant to the outside that left McMillan tumbling across the field at Dick Price Stadium. But it was all in fun as the two laughed and slapped hands after each pass, as a small group of Norfolk State staffers laughed in the background.

Michael Vick is used to being in the spotlight. The football legend brings that spotlight to Norfolk State, and the HBCU football world is ready. Vick’s debut as head football coach at Norfolk State University is officially scheduled for Thursday, August 28, at 7 p.m., and it will be broadcast nationally on the ESPN family of networks. The exact channel designation will be revealed later, but one thing is already clear. This game is one of the most anticipated HBCU football openers in recent memory.

The Spartans will take on Towson in a Thursday night showdown at William “Dick” Price Stadium, marking NSU’s first home night game since 2021 and its first mid-week home game in over a decade. But this isn’t just about a matchup—it’s about a moment. The beginning of the Michael Vick era.

The Journey: From NFL Star to HBCU Coach

Vick isn’t just another former pro taking a shot at coaching. He’s one of the most influential quarterbacks of the 21st century. A Virginia native, Vick changed the game at Virginia Tech before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft. His years with the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles redefined what a dual-threat QB could be, becoming a cultural icon on and off the field.

Since retiring, Vick has gradually stepped into coaching, first through private QB development and mentorship. But earlier this year, he shocked the football world by taking the helm at Norfolk State, an HBCU just miles from where he first made his name.

National Buzz, BET Cameras, and Soaring Ticket Prices

Vick’s arrival has sparked unprecedented excitement at Norfolk State and across the HBCU sports landscape.

BET has greenlit a docuseries chronicling his first season. The series will give fans inside access to his coaching style, player interactions, and personal reflections as he transitions into this new role, instantly elevating NSU’s national profile.

But the buzz hasn’t just been media hype—it’s hitting fans’ wallets, too.

Norfolk State ticket prices have jumped dramatically since Vick’s hiring. The average get-in price for home games has doubled, with secondary market listings for the Towson game already pushing past $100 in some sections.

The Matchup: Norfolk State vs. Towson

The season opener against Towson has more than historical significance. Over the past few seasons, the two teams have built a quiet regional rivalry.

Norfolk State beat Towson 21-14 on the road in 2023 in a rain-soaked grinder that showcased NSU’s grit. But in 2024, Towson edged out a 28-23 win in Norfolk; a loss still stings for the Spartans. With ESPN cameras rolling and the Vick spotlight shining, revenge could be sweet—and symbolic.

A New Era Under the Lights

This won’t be just another Thursday night kickoff—it’s a statement. It’s a moment where HBCU football, Norfolk State, and Michael Vick will converge.

Single-game tickets went on sale to NSU season ticket holders and Norfolk State University Athletics Foundation members on July 1, with general public access beginning July 14. However, if current trends continue, that window may be short-lived, especially with ESPN involved and Vick fever in full effect.

Whether you’re watching from the stands or tuning in nationally, one thing’s for sure: Michael Vick’s coaching career is kicking off in primetime—and the football world is here for it.

The WNBA is growing, and that’s major news for the game—and for HBCU athletes aiming to break through to the professional ranks.

On Monday, the WNBA announced it’s adding three new franchises, bringing the league to a record 18 teams. Cleveland will begin play in 2028, Detroit joins in 2029, and Philadelphia will tip off in 2030. This follows the addition of the Golden State Valkyries this season and two previously announced expansion teams set to launch next year in Toronto, Canada, and Portland, Oregon.

The league’s decision comes after its most successful season to date—shattering records for viewership, attendance, and merchandise sales. According to the WNBA, the cities were chosen based on factors like market strength, ownership commitment, fan support, corporate backing, and community investment.

This expansion isn’t just about adding teams—it’s about creating space in a league where roster spots have historically been hard to come by. That’s especially true for players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), who have often found their professional dreams blocked by the numbers game.

Tight Roster spots have made it hard for HBCU players to make a team

Recent cases prove how tight the window has been. Norfolk State’s Diamond Johnson, one of the most electrifying guards in the country, signed a training camp contract with the Minnesota Lynx after going undrafted in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Despite her talent, Johnson was waived before the season began.

Zaay Green, a former UAPB standout who finished her college career at Alabama, was drafted 32nd overall by the Washington Mystics. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the final roster.

These stories aren’t isolated—they’re part of a long-standing challenge for HBCU athletes looking to enter the W. With more teams on the horizon, there’s hope that the path to the pros will finally start to widen.

Diamond Johnson, the best player in HBCU basketball last season, was unable to secure a roster spot in the WNBA.

HBCU programs like Jackson State, Norfolk State, and Howard have shown they can produce elite talent. Now, with the WNBA creating more opportunities, that talent may have more room to shine.

As the league continues to grow—with MVP favorites like Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces leading the charge—the future looks bright not just for the WNBA, but for the next wave of HBCU hoopers ready to make their mark.

Michael Vick is still a few months away from leading his HBCU squad onto the field for its first game, but he’s already generating buzz. The Norfolk State head coach celebrated his 45th birthday earlier this month with a star-studded event.

Celebrity Guests and Hometown Energy

Basketball Hall of Famer Allen Iverson and hip-hop legend Jadakiss were among the many guests who stepped out in all-white to celebrate with Vick. The party took place in Vick’s hometown of Newport News, Virginia, at the Kiln Creek Golf Course and Resort.

Vick grew up in the Tidewater Region of Virginia and starred at Warwick High School before becoming a standout quarterback at Virginia Tech. He was drafted No. 1 overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001 and remained a familiar face in the area during his NFL career.

Return to Roots at Norfolk State

Now back in the region as head coach at nearby HBCU Norfolk State University, Vick has reconnected with his roots. It’s the same community Allen Iverson calls home. Iverson has supported Vick’s coaching journey from the beginning—attending both his introductory press conference and Norfolk State’s spring game. He also made sure to be there for Vick’s birthday celebration.

HBCU Coaches in Attendance

Several HBCU coaches joined the festivities. Norfolk State special teams coordinator and Winston-Salem State legend Tory Woodbury attended the party. So did former North Carolina Central standout and current Elizabeth City State head football coach Adrian Jones.

Norfolk State University has stepped into the spotlight of not just HBCU football, but college football as a whole by hiring Michael Vick.

The football program has long been a fixture in the HBCU sports world, but unlike its more decorated peers, its history has been defined more by mediocrity than momentum. As the Spartans prepare to open a new chapter under head coach Michael Vick in 2025, they do so carrying the weight of nearly nine decades of inconsistency. For all of its institutional pride and deep cultural roots as an HBCU, Norfolk State has yet to fully establish itself as a consistent football force—on the field, in recruiting, or in the national HBCU conversation.

An HBCU struggling to find an identity

Since first fielding a team in 1938, Norfolk State has compiled an overall record of 349–398–13, a mark that reflects how difficult sustained success has been. While other HBCU programs like Grambling State, Florida A&M, Jackson State, and South Carolina State have won national titles, produced NFL stars, and built legacy-driven brands, Norfolk State’s football story has lacked that kind of high-level breakthrough. The program has often hovered around .500 seasons, with occasional peaks overshadowed by longer stretches of underperformance.

Established the Norfolk Division of Virginia Union in 1935, the football team was first known as the “Baby Panthers.” The school underwent multiple name changes in its first decade, turning into a branch of Virginia State University in 1944 and then becoming the “Baby Trojans.” It finally got its own mascot in 1952 — becoming the Spartans — but football was still an afterthought.

During this period through the early 1960s, Norfolk State was a member of the EIAC. It played a mix of small Black colleges, junior colleges, “B” teams, and freshman squads. More than a dozen of its all-time wins came against non-varsity opponents like Swift Junior College, Virginia Seminary, and freshman teams from nearby HBCUs. While that was common among developing HBCUs of the time, it meant NSU didn’t gain early national HBCU football credibility. Unlike some rivals, Norfolk State didn’t face top-tier programs consistently in its formative decades.

The Spartans found some success in the mid-1970s under coach Dick Price, winning three consecutive CIAA championships (1974–1976), but the momentum didn’t last. It added a fourth CIAA title under Willard Bailey in 1984, but failed to win a title in its last dozen years in the league. NSU later moved up to Division I FCS (then I-AA) in 1997, joining the MEAC. But the jump didn’t yield a transformation. Instead, it highlighted the program’s struggle to compete at a higher level within the HBCU hierarchy.

Norfolk State, Aaron Sparrow

New division, same problems

Perhaps the program’s brightest moment came in 2011, when head coach Pete Adrian led the Spartans to a MEAC title and an FCS playoff appearance. But even that accomplishment was short-lived—NCAA violations later forced the school to vacate all of its wins from that season, erasing a rare high point from the record books. In many ways, that episode has become a metaphor for NSU football itself: flashes of success, clouded by setbacks and missed opportunities.

Pete Adrian and Norfolk State won the MEAC in 2011. The NCAA took it away. (Norfolk State Athletics)

As a Division I HBCU, Norfolk State has faced consistent challenges. The MEAC, where it has spent the bulk of its Division I era, was once among the strongest HBCU football conferences. Programs like South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman, and North Carolina A&T dominated the standings for years, leaving NSU to fight for relevance. Between 1997 and 2024, Norfolk State finished with a winning conference record just a handful of times. Even with access to scholarships, upgraded facilities, and regional talent, the Spartans often ended up in the middle or bottom of the MEAC standings.

Part of the problem has been institutional instability. Norfolk State has cycled through more than a dozen head coaches since its inception. Few stayed long enough to build continuity. Administrative turnover and limited football investment—especially compared to FBS programs or top-performing HBCUs—hampered long-term planning. Meanwhile, Norfolk State’s location in the talent-rich Hampton Roads region became less of an advantage as FBS programs began dominating the recruiting landscape.

Nowhere was this more evident than in the rise of Old Dominion University, located just across town. ODU restarted its football program in 2009 and quickly rose to FCS prominence, joining FBS and Conference USA by 2014. With superior facilities, TV exposure, and the backing of state funding, ODU pulled attention, fans, and talent away from Norfolk State. The Spartans, once the face of college football in Norfolk, became overshadowed in their own backyard.

The program also lacked a defining football identity. While some HBCUs are known for their high-flying offenses, punishing defenses, or pipeline to the NFL, Norfolk State hasn’t consistently developed a signature style or legacy. It has sent some players to the pros—most notably DB Don Carey and WR James Roe—but has rarely been seen as a player factory like other HBCU powers.

Enter Michael Vick

The challenge facing Michael Vick in 2025 is enormous, despite his star power and local roots. The former NFL quarterback and Virginia Tech legend brings instant visibility and credibility to the program. His name alone has already sparked interest and anticipation that NSU hasn’t seen in decades. But Vick is inheriting a program that has gone a combined 19–37 since 2019, with no winning seasons and declining attendance.

Turning Norfolk State into a consistent program won’t just be about play-calling or offensive schemes. It will require strategic investment from the university, a renewed commitment to facilities and recruiting, and a strong outreach to the community and HBCU alumni base. Vick will need to establish a staff that can identify under-the-radar talent, develop players over time, and compete with both HBCUs and FBS programs in the region.

The good news is that Vick enters at a moment when HBCU football is undergoing a renaissance. The HBCU brand is growing, with increased media coverage, NIL opportunities, and celebrity attention. If Norfolk State can ride that wave, leverage Vick’s name, and show improvement on the field, it could position itself for a much-needed revival. The MEAC, now thinner due to realignment, is also more open than it was a decade ago.

Still, the road ahead is steep. Norfolk State has been an HBCU program on the margins for far too long. It has the location, the alumni base, and the cultural foundation to become a consistent winner—but it will take more than hope. It will take planning, funding, patience, and leadership.

Michael Vick may not be a traditional hire, but in a program that’s tried everything else, he represents something different: a chance to reset the narrative. Whether he can lift Norfolk State out of its long-standing football mediocrity remains to be seen. But for the Spartans, a program still trying to earn its place among elite HBCUs, there’s no more time to waste. The legacy must be built—not just borrowed from others.

Norfolk State women’s basketball standout Diamond Johnson, one of the top HBCU athletes in the nation, is taking her game to the professional level.

Johnson made history at Norfolk State, leading the Spartans to back-to-back MEAC Tournament championships in 2024 and 2025. She helped Norfolk State, a rising HBCU basketball power, post a 30-5 record last season, the best in the program’s Division I history. The Spartans also finished with a perfect 16-0 record in MEAC play and ranked No. 5 in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll.

Johnson earned MEAC Player of the Year honors for the 2024-25 season. She averaged 18.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Johnson was also one of the nation’s best defensive players, ranking fifth nationally in steals with 3.6 per game.

She surpassed 2,000 career points, a major milestone achieved against top-level competition, including teams from the Big Ten, ACC, and MEAC. Johnson set Norfolk State Division I records for most points in a season (663) and most 3-pointers in a season (70). She also earned MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors and was named to the Dawn Staley Award Watchlist and the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Watchlist.

Following her final college season, Johnson earned MVP honors at the Women’s College All-Star Game with a 21-point performance. She later received a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx.

Johnson recently signed a professional contract with Hefei of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA). Founded in 2002, the WCBA is the top women’s professional basketball league in China. Hefei competes in the league’s Group B division, which features nine teams.

While Michael Vick was getting selected first overall in the 2001 NFL Draft, HBCU football star Tory Woodbury had to take a different route to the league.

Woodbury went undrafted out of Division II HBCU Winston-Salem State, but still managed to earn a spot in the NFL. He starred as a quarterback at WSSU but carved out a pro career as a special teams ace with the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and New Orleans Saints.

Nearly 25 years later, Woodbury has reunited with Vick on the inaugural Norfolk State coaching staff. He now serves as the Spartans’ special teams coordinator. The two recently shared a moment of reflection in a video posted by Woodbury.

Tory Woodbury, Norfolk State, Morgan State

At Winston-Salem State, Woodbury made a name for himself by leading the Rams to back-to-back CIAA titles in 1999 and 2000. He set several passing records during his career and entered the 2001 NFL Draft as the second-fastest quarterback behind Vick.

After his playing days ended, Woodbury began coaching. He started at Delaware State as a running backs coach and later spent three seasons as offensive coordinator at Johnson C. Smith.

Woodbury then joined the NFL again as a scout with the Los Angeles Rams. He returned to the sidelines as an assistant special teams coach and helped the Rams win Super Bowl LVI. He transitioned back to college football in 2022 at Morgan State, then moved on to Howard University.

At Howard, Woodbury led a special teams unit that blocked six field goals, ranking fifth nationally in the FCS. His journey from HBCU standout to Super Bowl champion and now Norfolk State assistant coach Michael Vick reflects a full-circle moment in HBCU football history.

Philadelphia, PA – Presale tickets are officially live for one of the most anticipated HBCU football games of the year. On Thursday, October 30, two Philadelphia Eagles legends—DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick—will return to Lincoln Financial Field as head coaches in a game that blends NFL legacy with HBCU pride.

Jackson’s Delaware State Hornets will face off against Vick’s Norfolk State Spartans in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup unlike any other.

A Unique HBCU Moment in an NFL Stadium

This isn’t just another HBCU football game in a pro stadium. While events like the Celebration Bowl, Orange Blossom Classic, and Southern Heritage Classic have showcased HBCU culture in NFL venues, this game is different.

This regular-season, MEAC matchup will impact the conference standings and takes place in one of the NFL’s premier stadiums, with two of the most electrifying players in Eagles history now leading their teams as head coaches.

“We are thrilled to host two of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country,” said Frank Gumienny, COO of the Philadelphia Eagles. “DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick are blazing new trails in their respective careers that we are all incredibly proud of.”

Presale Tickets Now Live

Tickets went on presale Tuesday, June 17, at 10 AM on Ticketmaster.com. Fans should act fast. With Jackson and Vick leading their squads, this game just might sell out fast.

The Philadelphia Eagles released an energetic hype video to announce the presale. Reminding fans of the duo’s legendary moments in midnight green—and building excitement for their return in a new role.

Both Jackson and Vick had career-defining performances at Lincoln Financial Field. In 2010, they pulled off one of the most iconic comebacks in NFL history—known as the Miracle at the New Meadowlands.

“To be playing in Philly, at the Linc, on the field Coach Vick and I called home for many years, will be special,” said DeSean Jackson. “It means a lot for our players, alumni, and HBCU culture across the country.”

Michael Vick echoed the excitement.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue,” Vick said. “Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories at Lincoln Financial Field. I’m thrilled to return as a head coach for this historic moment.”

More Than a Game

The matchup goes beyond football. Programming around the game will include:

 • Career readiness workshops
 • Work-based learning opportunities
 • Networking events with both coaches

It’s all part of a broader mission to showcase the power and value of HBCU institutions.

“While we are both excited about the game, this is more than that,” said Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston (Norfolk State) and Dr. Tony Allen (Delaware State) in a joint statement. “The measure of this game’s success will be in the light it shines on the power of our HBCU community.”

With the buzz already building from the hype video and early ticket announcements, this showdown is shaping up to be a cultural moment. It’s about more than touchdowns and trophies—it’s about legacy, leadership, and lifting HBCU programs into the national spotlight in a way that only legends like Vick and Jackson can.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University has finalized a home-and-home series with nationally ranked Ole Miss, continuing a trend of high-profile matchups for the rising HBCU women’s basketball program.

The HBCU squad will travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face the Rebels on Nov. 3, 2025. The following season, Ole Miss will make its first-ever trip to Echols Hall. Tipoff times for both contests will be announced at a later date.

“This is an exciting moment for our women’s basketball program and the entire Norfolk State community,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb. “Hosting a nationally ranked SEC opponent like Ole Miss speaks volumes about our trajectory and growing national reputation. With two ranked teams—Duke and Ole Miss—coming to Echols Hall, our fans are in for an incredible stretch of elite basketball.”

This series marks the first meeting between Norfolk State and Ole Miss. The Spartans are no strangers to success against the SEC, earning wins over Missouri and Auburn last season while finishing 2-1 against the conference.

When Ole Miss visits Norfolk, it will become the first SEC team to play on the Spartans’ home court. The Rebels finished the 2024–25 season ranked No. 17 nationally with a 22–11 record and a trip to the Sweet 16.

“Coach McPhee-McCuin has long championed the growth and visibility of HBCUs,” said Norfolk State head coach Jermaine Woods. “We’ve built a strong relationship, and I appreciate her using her platform to uplift others and promote the game. Her program’s visit to Norfolk will mean a great deal to our city and university.”

Norfolk State is coming off a historic season, claiming a third straight MEAC Tournament Championship. The Spartans earned a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament, their highest placement in program history.

This agreement comes shortly after NSU agreed to a home-and-home with Duke.

On June 7, 2025, NBA legend Allen “The Answer” Iverson celebrated his 50th birthday in fitting style—sporting a Michael Vick No. 7 jersey at a lavish after?party that doubled as a testament to sports, music, and HBCU culture colliding under one roof.

The festivities were nothing short of remarkable. Hip Hop turned up when Baton Rouge rapper Lil Boosie delivered a high?energy set, igniting the crowd. Among the VIPs were boxing champion Terence Crawford and none other than Norfolk State’s head football coach, Michael Vick. The former NFL star, who took the helm at NSU in December 2024, has already begun elevating the university’s brand through his celebrity gravitas and wide network.

Vick’s hiring marks part of a broader trend in HBCU athletics, following trailblazers like Deion Sanders and Eddie George, in leveraging household names to boost visibility and recruitment. Norfolk State’s athletic director, Melody Webb, emphasized that Vick’s “resilience and personal journey” make him the perfect ambassador to attract talent and media attention.

Meanwhile, Iverson—born June?7,?1975, in Hampton, Virginia—reflected on a career that defied expectations. Standing just 6?0? and 165?lb, he was a rare force in a league of giants. Nicknamed “The Answer,” he amassed 11 NBA All?Star nods, a 2001 MVP award, four scoring titles, and over 24,000 career points, all with his trademark fearless style and cultural flair. After retiring in 2011, he continued shaping the game’s culture and influence—later culminating in a statue unveiled near the 76ers’ training complex in 2024.

That evening, with music booming, HBCU jerseys front and center, and legends mingling, Iverson’s milestone became more than personal—it was a celebration of intertwined legacies. As coach Vick builds Norfolk State’s brand and Iverson’s influence endures, the night stood as a vivid reminder that greatness spans generations, sports, and stages.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson was back in the NFL, for at least a day. Jackson made a surprise appearance at the team’s mandatory minicamp practice Tuesday, drawing warm recognition from players, staff, and fans alike. Jackson, known for his electrifying speed and game-breaking ability, played eight seasons over two stints with the Eagles. His career in Philadelphia included three Pro Bowl selections and some of the most memorable plays in franchise history — none more iconic than his walk-off punt return touchdown against the New York Giants in 2010.

Now entering a new chapter in football, Jackson has transitioned from player to coach. He currently serves as the head football coach at Delaware State University, a role he assumed earlier this year. His visit to the Eagles minicamp served both as a homecoming and an opportunity to stay connected with the NFL community, likely offering perspective and inspiration to both veterans and rookies on the roster.

Jackson’s visit to the Eagles camp comes on the heels of his first megacamp at Delaware State. Jackson welcomed more than 400 high school athletes to the school’s inaugural high school mega camp, an event aimed at identifying talent and strengthening recruiting ties across the region, and showing what his HBCU has to offer.

“Man, shoot, there’s a lot of great talent out here today,” DeSean Jackson told HBCU Gameday. “Anytime we get a chance to get out here, get eyes on guys, and evaluate their movement, speed, and competitiveness — that’s a win.”

Jackson’s presence in Philadelphia won’t be the last time in 2025. The matchup between Delaware State and Michael Vick’s Norfolk State Spartans will be played at Lincoln Financial Field. Originally slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Delaware State’s Alumni Stadium, the game will now take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The decision comes after unprecedented anticipation for the matchup between two well-known head coaches.

A unique blend of sports stardom and athleticism took center stage this weekend as former NFL superstar Michael Vick tossed passes to undefeated boxing champion Terence “Bud” Crawford on the turf at Norfolk State University, a Virginia HBCU. The impromptu route-running session turned heads, especially as Crawford squared off against his friend DeMarcus McMillan, the Spartans’ newly appointed Director of Football Operations.

Crawford, a three-division world champion and current undisputed welterweight titleholder, showed off more than just his boxing skills, demonstrating agility and hands while running crisp routes. The Omaha native is currently preparing for one of the most anticipated fights of the year against Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight championship on September 13, 2025. With an unblemished 41-0 record and a reputation for his technical precision and power, Crawford remains one of boxing’s elite.

His opponent for the day, DeMarcus McMillan, brings a unique blend of discipline and leadership to the Norfolk State program. A decorated military veteran with over 22 years of service, McMillan transitioned into athletics through youth football and operations roles. But on Saturday McMillan lined up at defensive back to try and shut the champ down.

The sight of Vick — one of the most electric quarterbacks in NFL history — playing quarterback again, even casually, added a layer of celebrity flair. As a Newport News native, Vick continues to bring attention to HBCU programs through his network, and this viral moment is another example of how star power can elevate visibility for Black college football.

Before the day was over McMillan did get some pride back when Terence Crawford lined up at corner. He ran a 30 yard go route as “all-time” quarterback Michael Vick placed the ball right into his stomach as he turned around. The video quickly spread across social media as the two sports worlds collided for the day in Norfolk.

Michael Vick wrote on social media, “Money always on @tbudcrawford…”

With Crawford’s star power, Vick’s influence, and McMillan’s leadership, Norfolk State found itself at the intersection of sports, culture, and opportunity, and HBCU football continues to benefit from the exposure.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb and head women’s basketball coach Jermaine Woods have reached an agreement for a home-and-home series with nationally ranked Duke, bringing a major HBCU matchup to life over the next two seasons.

The Spartans will travel to Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium on Nov. 12, 2025. The following season, the Blue Devils will make their first-ever visit to Echols Hall. Tipoff times for both games will be announced later.

“This is a landmark moment for our women’s basketball program and our university,” Webb said. “Hosting a nationally ranked team like Duke highlights our commitment to raising the profile of Norfolk State Athletics. It also provides our student-athletes and fans with a chance to experience top-tier competition on our campus.”

The two programs have met only once before. In 2002, Duke defeated Norfolk State 95-48 in the NCAA Tournament’s first round, shortly after NSU won its first MEAC Tournament Championship.

The 2026 visit by Duke will be the first time an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent plays at Norfolk State, marking a historic milestone for the HBCU. The Blue Devils finished last season 29-8 and reached the Elite Eight, ending the year ranked No. 7 nationally.

“I appreciate Coach Kara Lawson’s willingness to set up this series,” Woods said. “Collaborations like this help HBCUs gain national visibility. Her return to Norfolk will benefit our program, university, and the community.”

Norfolk State enters the 2025-26 season after winning its third consecutive MEAC Tournament title and earning a No. 13 seed in the NCAA Tournament — the program’s highest seeding to date.

Award-winning actress and Abbott Elementary star Sheryl Lee Ralph turned a heartfelt moment into a historic act of giving at Virginia-HBCU Norfolk State University’s 2025 graduation commencement ceremony. Her powerful gesture lit a spark that quickly grew into a $25,000 fundraising wave.

The excitement began after Senior Class President Zay’Kori Jones gave his final remarks. He shared that the Class of 2025 had raised $4,136 toward their $5,000 goal for the university. That’s when Ralph stepped up to help close the gap.

Without hesitation, she pledged $1,000—not only meeting but exceeding the amount needed. Her generosity didn’t stop there.

Moments later, NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston and Bishop Kim Brown, rector of the university’s Board of Visitors, each pledged $1,000 as well. Their quick responses sparked something even greater.

In just eight minutes, the audience came alive. One by one, hands shot up. Attendees shouted out pledges of $1,000 and even $2,000. By the end, more than $25,000 had been raised—right there in the auditorium.

“I was at a loss for words,” said Senior Class Vice President Nina Collymore. “I felt so proud, so loved.”

Jones shared his appreciation, too. “Thank you so much for being so inspirational,” he told Ralph.

All the money raised will go toward the Senior Class Gift through the Proud to Pay Legacy Book Scholarship Fund. This fund helps future Norfolk State students afford essential textbooks and supplies.

“This moment shows how powerful generosity can be,” said President Adams-Gaston, Ph.D. “I am thankful to Ms. Ralph and all those who gave from the heart.”

This unforgettable HBCU graduation moment serves as another example of the enduring influence of HBCU culture and community.

Sheryl Lee Ralph’s words and actions prove that when celebrity and purpose align, the results can be extraordinary. Norfolk State University and its newest graduates are sure to carry that legacy forward with pride and purpose.

“I came to Delaware State University to start a new phase of my career with a unique institution that cares about its students and is helping to transform their futures,” Jackson said. “I know Coach Vick feels the same way at Norfolk State. A part of that transformation is opening our students and scholar athletes up to a whole new set of experiences at the highest level. For our teams to be playing in Philly, at Lincoln Financial Field, on the field Coach Vick and I called home for many years will be special for our players, our coaching staffs, our Alumni and fans, and for HBCU culture around the country.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue on a world-class stage,” Vick added. “Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories together at Lincoln Financial Field – this stadium holds special meaning in my NFL career. I am thrilled to be a part of this historic moment and want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, Norfolk State, and Delaware State for their collaboration to make this happen.”

Tickets will go on sale at later date.

Michael Vick, newly named head football coach at Norfolk State University, made a high-profile appearance at the Atlanta Falcons’ OTA practice on June 2. The visit marks a full-circle moment for the former Falcons quarterback and signals a new chapter not only for Vick, but for the visibility of HBCU football programs nationwide.

Vick’s presence at an NFL facility just months after taking the helm at Norfolk State is more than symbolic. As one of the most electrifying players in NFL history, his legacy with the Falcons remains strong. From 2001 to 2006, Vick revolutionized the quarterback position with his speed, arm strength, and game-changing plays, earning four Pro Bowl selections and becoming the first quarterback to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.

Now, as he transitions to coaching, Vick brings more than just football knowledge—he brings national attention. The presence of Vick is offering Norfolk State a level of exposure rarely seen for an HBCU program. This increased visibility has the potential to impact recruiting, fundraising, and media coverage for the Spartans and beyond.

Vick’s star power is already generating buzz on social media, and it’s clear he’s committed to elevating HBCU football. By bridging the gap between professional football and historically Black colleges, he can help shift the national narrative and spotlight the talent and potential housed within these institutions.

For Norfolk State, having a household name like Michael Vick on the sidelines is more than a coaching change—it’s a branding transformation. As HBCUs continue to push for equity in the college sports landscape, Vick’s influence could be a game-changer.

Norfolk, VA — College basketball fans in the 757 have something special to look forward to. Norfolk State University (NSU), a historic HBCU, and Old Dominion University (ODU), a prominent PWI, are reigniting their crosstown rivalry with a home-and-home series.

HBCU Old Dominion University Norfolk State University
A Long-Awaited Return

The series begins in the 2025–26 season with ODU hosting the first game at Chartway Arena. The rivalry continues the following year when NSU hosts at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.

These are not just games but a celebration of basketball heritage in Norfolk, VA.

Excitement from Both Sides

NSU Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb expressed the significance of the series:

“This is tremendous news not only for Norfolk State and Old Dominion fans, but all basketball fans in the Hampton Roads community… I am confident that our fanbase’s presence will be heard loud and clear in both arenas.”

NSU Head Coach Robert Jones added:

“Two storied basketball programs will now compete for the next two years… at least. We are excited about this crosstown rivalry.”

From ODU, Head Coach Jeff Jones shared his enthusiasm:

“This is a great opportunity to compete in front of our fans in the 757… GAME ON! GO MONARCHS!!!”

A Historic HBCU Rivalry Renewed

The rivalry began in 1965 and has been marked by periods of intense competition. ODU currently leads the series 15–6, but the last game was played in 2017. The renewed matchups offer a fresh chapter in the long-standing series. Over the years, the series has seen periods of dominance by both programs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Norfolk State University held the upper hand, while Old Dominion University took control in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Since 1981, however, the teams have met only four times, with the most recent encounter occurring at the neutral-site Norfolk Scope in 2017.

More importantly, they spotlight HBCUs like Norfolk State’s critical role in shaping college athletics and community identity.

What It Means for the Community

This rivalry does more than just put two local teams on the court. It brings together fanbases, showcases regional talent, and celebrates a shared sports culture in Norfolk.

With the return of this historic HBCU vs PWI rivalry, excitement is building across Hampton Roads — and basketball fans won’t want to miss a moment.

The Virginia football community is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved figures. Tommy Reamon, a former NFL running back and legendary high school coach, passed away at 73. His legacy is deeply rooted in mentorship, notably his transformative influence on athletes like Michael Vick, the new head HBCU football coach at Norfolk State University.

From NFL Fields to High School Sidelines

Born in Virgilinia, Virginia, Reamon began his football journey at George Washington Carver High School and went on to shine at the University of Missouri. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974, Reamon’s career later took him into coaching, where he made a lasting impact on high school football in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Guiding Michael Vick to Greatness

Among the many young athletes Reamon coached, none stood out more than Michael Vick. Under Reamon’s mentorship at Ferguson and Warwick High Schools, Vick developed into one of the most electric quarterbacks of his generation. Reamon saw Vick’s potential early—and not just on the field.

He pushed Vick to consider coaching long before it became a reality. That persistence paid off when Vick was named the head football coach at Norfolk State University, Virginia’s largest HBCU, in December 2024.

Michael Vick Virginia HBCU Tommy Reamon
Reamon’s Pride—and a Powerful Blueprint

Reamon praised Vick’s new role as a game-changer for Norfolk State. “Just that word, wow, because it’s going to change the culture,” he told WTKR. “It’s going to change the culture at Norfolk State.”

He even sees Vick following in the footsteps of Deion Sanders, whose college coaching career began with remarkable success in HBCU football at Jackson State. “He’s the model,” Reamon said of Sanders. “Tomorrow, day one of work, that boy Michael will do exactly what Deion Sanders is doing.”

According to Reamon, Vick has already spoken with Sanders and has a blueprint. While transitioning from NFL superstar to HBCU head coach is uncharted territory, Reamon had no doubt: “He’s going to be a great one,” he smiled. “He’s been around good teaching.”

A Voice for HBCU Football

Reamon was more than a coach—a passionate advocate for HBCU programs. Over the years, he guided countless student-athletes toward institutions like Norfolk State, Hampton University, and Virginia State. His work helped shine a spotlight on the power of HBCU football to shape future leaders both on and off the field.

A Legacy That Lives On

Tommy Reamon’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will endure. Through his mentorship of Michael Vick and steadfast support of HBCU football, Reamon transformed lives and elevated communities. His influence will be felt for generations to come.

The 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships showcased the continued rise of HBCU track excellence. Howard University claimed the women’s title, while Norfolk State University captured the men’s crown—proving both HBCU programs remain powerhouses in the MEAC.

Howard Women Run Away with MEAC Track Title

Howard’s women’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance, continuing their reign with a fourth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Bison finished with 292 points—over 100 more than their closest rival.

The HBCU program’s success was comprehensive. Howard dominated across all disciplines, collecting 14 gold medals and making 28 podium appearances, including three complete podium sweeps. From sprints to distance, every event reflected the team’s preparation and depth.

Star sprinter Kailei Collins claimed victory in the 100m dash (11.28), while teammate Kiya Lawson secured gold in the 200m (22.87) and 400m (53.75). In hurdles, Marcia Sey captured the 100m hurdles title in 12.84 seconds.

Middle-distance runner Camille Egbula earned back-to-back wins in the 800m and 1500m. Joslyn Crosby added a win in the 5,000m. Howard’s 4x100m relay squad—Collins, Sey, Tiffani-Rae Pittman, and Aiyana Gray-Williams—sealed their dominance with a 44.15-second win.

Norfolk State Track Team Secures Men’s Championship

Norfolk State’s men’s track team continued its MEAC dynasty, earning its fourth straight outdoor championship. The Spartans totalled 227 points, separating themselves from the competition.

This HBCU program excelled in both sprints and distance events. In the 10,000m, Gidion Sigei led a podium sweep with a time of 30:36.11. Norfolk State repeated the sweep in the 5,000m behind Sigei, Victor Jumo, and Lewis Too.

On the sprint side, Premier Wynn won the 400m (46.53), while Kendrick Winfield claimed the 200m (20.70) after finishing second in the 400. The Spartans capped their performance with a dominant 4x400m relay win in 3:09.34.

Howard Men Share Second in Competitive Finish

Howard University’s men’s team tied for second place with Coppin State, each scoring 111.5 points. The Bison were led by standout hurdler Noah Langford, who won the 110m hurdles (13.64) and the 400m hurdles (50.65). He later anchored the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish in 3:09.66.

Other key contributors to the HBCU program’s performance included Goba Dan-Princewill, who finished third in the 100m dash, and Chase Drewery, who earned silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.44 meters.

MEAC Track & Field Shows HBCU Growth and Depth

The 2025 MEAC Track & Field Championships reflected not only the success of Howard and Norfolk State, but also the rising strength of HBCU programs across the board. Teams like Coppin State, Morgan State, and Delaware State made their presence felt through individual standout performances.

Although the championship trophies went to two familiar programs, the overall depth and competitiveness suggest a bright future for MEAC track and field. With several HBCU athletes advancing to the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the conference is poised to make an impact at the national level.

As the outdoor track season progresses, HBCU programs in the MEAC continue to prove they belong on the national stage—with speed, strength, and strategy that match any conference in the country.

The post Allen Iverson and Michael Vick’s 757 brotherhood continues appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Allen Iverson has been one of Michael Vick’s biggest supporters since he was tagged to take over as head football coach at HBCU Norfolk State. He recently rocked a number seven “Vick” jersey in a photo showing his support for his fellow hometown legend.

The jersey is for sale online, and will help fund the Norfolk State football program.

Of course, Iverson’s support goes way past helping Vick sell some football jerseys.

Allen Iverson and Michael Vick put the 757 on their back

Allen Iverson and Michael Vick both hail from Newport News, Virginia — one of the seven cities that make up the area historically known as the Tidewater or Hampton Roads, but often just known by its area code — ’757. Newport News’ next door neighbor is Hampton, where the first Africans were brought to America in 1619. Black people have been in this region longer than they have anywhere in the continental United States. And even today, 400-plus years later, there’s something unique about the brand of blackness that comes out of this region.

The region is southern by its geography and its history, but as a shipping and military hub it draws in people from all over making it something of a melting pot. If you’re from New York or even D.C., you might call the people ‘country.’ If you’re from the Deep South, they might not fit your profile of a stereotypical ‘southerner.” They dress to impress and they have a level of flair and uniqueness that is all their own. Whether it’s eye-catching sparkles for the women or jewelry for the men, folks in this region have a special way of making themselves shine. There is a big sense of family that breeds a down-home feel and can be very inviting — but it can go left at any minute.

They also play ball. Football, basketball, baseball…just ball. Pro and college sports are filled with talented athletes from the 757. Iverson and Vick, though, are by far the region’s most iconic exports and the world’s best glimpse at what makes the people in this area of the world special. Both men were unicorns in their respective sports. Iverson was a six foot guard with the speed of a defensive back and the ability to go through defenses like a running back while jumping out of the gym, re-defining the guard position. Vick had the arm strength of a greek god and the legs of one, too. Both men were selected first overall in their respective drafts — Vick the first black quarterback ever to do so — and in the early 2000s challenged the status quo on what a superstar pro athlete should look like.

In short, both men wore the 757 on their sleeves while carrying it on their backs. For the first half of the 2000s these men were arguably two of the most popular athletes in America, but back home they are immortal.

Allen Iverson, Michael Vick

“All we about care is getting gratification and love from here. Like worldwide. Okay. Cool. Allen Iverson all over the world. All over the globe. Fine. I love it. It’s beautiful. You know what I mean. I got more fans in China than anybody in the world,” Iverson said on Monday. “But…home? It hurt different. It feel good different. You know, is it is a different feeling because these are ‘you.’ Like in your mind and think you representin’ these people here. Even if you somebody that you never met before, if you from Virginia, then you Allen Iverson? That’s how I live. You know what I mean? That and that’s how I live my life. I’m Virginia. I am Virginia. This is who I am and what I represent.”

In his first press conference with the media, Michael Vick answered questions while Iverson stood with his fur neck coach against the wall in his fitted cap, white tee and III chain and watched from the sidelines.

“He made me dream. Allen Iverson made me dream,” Vick told the media. “He was a big part of my upbringing. I looked up to him. He exemplified excellence in so many ways. And he always treated me as, you know, a little brother, you know, so to speak. And was always there to support me and guide me make sure I stayed on the straight, narrow.”

Of course, Vick took a well-documented detour off the pack at one point. But, by all accounts, Iverson was always in his corner.

“A lot of people gave up on him. Not me,” Iverson said. “Not the people that really matter. Not the mutha—— that love him,” Iverson said honestly, before covering his mouth with his hand.

“Ain’t nobody giving up on you,” he continued. “People make mistakes. All of us do. It’s easy to critique somebody. It’s easy to like, judge somebody. you know, I mean, all of us make mistakes. All of us made mistakes in our life — you know what I mean? But what you going to do when you fall. Get your ass up.”

That’s what Vick did. He worked his way back into the NFL as a player and later as an analyst before coming to Norfolk State to coach.

They are both survivors of a place that, despite its down-home charm and family values, has seen many talented athletes taken down before and after them. And nearly took them down too. But they have lived to tell their story and be a representation for those that follow them, from far and near.

Iverson Vick
Iverson and Vick at the Norfolk State Spring Game

“It’s no sugar coating nothing when it come to Mike Vick. He been through everything. Been through the ups and downs. He been through everything in life? You know, I mean, like, it’s a story, man. It’s a great story is a great, beautiful thing, what he has to offer. So not just kids. Everybody get caught up on just kids to everybody. It’s not just kids. He got a great story. You know what I mean and redemption and shit that he can like. He can help people just by his voice and his story and what he’s been through in life. And that’s what he gonna do.”

And in the months that have followed Michael Vick’s introductory press conference that cold December day, Allen Iverson has made good of his promise to support his fellow 757 legend. In early April he showed up for Norfolk State’s spring game to watch the team scrimmage. After the game he not only came down on the field, he joined in the huddle and broke the team down emphatically — perhaps reliving his days as a state championship-winning quarterback for Bethel High School. He also told the team he would be back to support them during the season.

And so far, Allen Iverson’s word has been his bond when it comes to supporting his 757 brother Michael Vick.

Diamond Johnson didn’t hear her name called in the WNBA Draft like many HBCU supporters were hoping for, but she does have her foot in the door.

The former Norfolk State guard is currently in training camp with the Minnesota Lynx, looking to play her way onto the squad.

The 5’5 guard, who started her career at Temple and also played at NC State before transferring to NSU, was asked about the impact of playing at an HBCU on her WNBA prospects.

“Just be you. If you’re super talented enough, I think they’ll find you. When I was playing for Norfolk State we did a really good job of setting our schedule,” Johnson told local media over the weekend. “We played two SEC schools — we ended up winning. We played Alabama — we lost by 10. We played those good mid-major schools like Green Bay and Wyoming.”

Norfolk State beat Missouri and Auburn in non-conference play before ravaging the MEAC during conference play. That dominance was key, according to Diamond Johnson.

“And then just dominate in your league, win every game by 30 plus, to make it feel like it’s not super-close so they can ever question the competition and stuff.

NSU went 30-5 overall, winning the MEAC regular season and conference tournament before dropping a heart-breaker to Maryland in the NCAA Tournament. Johnson was named MEAC Player of the Year and was up for several national awards. However, she wasn’t selected in the WNBA Draft last month. Still, having played at the Power Four level as well as an HBCU, Johnson can speak on succeeding in college ball in multiple enviornments in preparation for the WNBA.

“It’s whatever fits you, it could be a P4, HBCU, smaller school. Just do what makes you happy and then obviously when you get there you got to ball out and they’ll find you.”

The Norfolk State women’s track & field team delivered a series of standout performances at the prestigious Penn Relays this past weekend, highlighted by a historic showing for the HBCU squad in the 4×400 meter relay.

Making history in the 4×400 heats, the quartet of Leanna Lewis, Kalyncia Taylor, Kadynce Taylor, and Autumn Burrell shattered a 30-year-old school record. The team crossed the line in 3:40.44, eclipsing the previous mark set in 1994, and secured first place in their heat.

The Spartans maintained their dominance in the 4×400 finals, where Kadynce Taylor, Kalyncia Taylor, Jahmei Wyatt, and Lewis posted a near-identical time of 3:40.64 to claim first place once again.

Norfolk State also excelled in other relay events. In the sprint medley, Asiah Wike, Brandy Hall, Lewis, and Wyatt combined for a strong fourth-place finish with a time of 3:56.22. The 4×200 relay team — Kailie Borque, Wike, Hall, and Burrell — clocked 1:38.42 to finish 10th, while the 4×100 squad featuring Brooklyn Robinson, Burrell, Hall, and Borque placed 12th overall with a time of 45.31 seconds.

Individually, Robinson advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, ultimately finishing seventh in 13.71 seconds. Daena Dyer competed in the 400-meter hurdles, placing 37th with a time of 1:08.00 in a highly competitive field.

In field events, Aniah Kennerson cleared 5-3 in the high jump, earning a 12th-place finish.

The Spartans will now enjoy a three-week break before turning their attention to HBCU competition and the MEAC Outdoor Championships, set for May 15-17 at William “Dick” Price Stadium in Norfolk.

Last year the Norfolk State women finished second in the MEAC Outdoor Championship. It was the third consecutive title for Howard University who was crowned the MEAC Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Champions in 2024. The Bison totaled 231 points, 32 points more than the runners-up in Norfolk State University. The Hornets of Delaware State rounded out the top three with 94.5 team points.

Despite her standout collegiate career, Johnson went undrafted in the 2025 WNBA Draft, a decision that sparked considerable discussion among fans and analysts.

Transferring to Norfolk State for her final two college seasons, Johnson delivered exceptional performances, averaging 18.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.3 steals per game. She set a MEAC Tournament single-game scoring record with a 30-point, 11-rebound outing in the semifinals and was named the 2024 Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Year at the Spartan Choice Awards.

Johnson’s omission from the draft raised questions about potential biases, with some speculating that her height and decision to play at an HBCU may have influenced teams’ decisions. Social media reactions highlighted the surprise and disappointment felt by many, emphasizing her impressive statistics and leadership qualities.

Now, with the opportunity to compete in the Lynx’s training camp, Diamond Johnson aims to demonstrate her capabilities and earn a place in the WNBA. Her journey underscores the challenges faced by talented players from underrepresented programs like Norfolk State and other HBCUs and the importance of providing equitable opportunities in professional sports.

The Minnesota Lynx are set to open training camp at The Courts at Mayo Clinic Square on Sunday, April 27.

Their two-game preseason slate kicks off with a matchup against the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena on Tuesday, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. EST.. The preseason concludes with a home game at Target Center on Saturday, May 10 at 8:00 p.m. EST.

Minnesota will tip off the regular season on the road, facing the Dallas Wings on Friday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. EST.

After the conclusion of spring practice at Norfolk State, Michael Vick has lost the starting quarterback from last season to the transfer portal. Jalen Daniels posted Sunday on social media that he would be leaving the Virginia HBCU to pursue other opportunities.

“After many conversations with my family, I will be entering my name in the transfer portal with three years of eligibility. Thank you Norfolk and good luck to all my brothers and the new coaching staff,” Daniels wrote in part to his “X” account.

Daniels came to Norfolk State in the 2024 season as a transfer from Garden City CC, where he totaled 1,282 passing yards and 9 touchdowns in 2023. Prior to playing at the JUCO level, he started his college career at South Carolina as a three-star quarterback.

In his sophomore year, quarterback Jalen Daniels led the Norfolk State Spartans with a solid performance throughout the 2024 season. He completed 108 of 191 pass attempts, achieving a 56.5% completion rate. Daniels threw for a total of 1,333 yards, averaging 7.0 yards per attempt. He threw for 11 touchdowns against four interceptions, culminating in a passer rating of 130.0.?

Daniels’ standout game was against Morgan State, completing 13 of 18 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns. Another breakout was during Senior Day versus Delaware State when Daniels threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown.

Michael Vick leaning toward new starter

Michael Vick had other ideas about the starting quarterback for his first season. In Saturday’s spring game, Israel Carter was the featured quarterback. The South Florida transfer took the majority of snaps with the first team during Saturday’s scrimmage. Vick said he liked what he saw.

“Israel looked good. It’s a couple plays I thought he could have made early,” Vick told the media after the game. “You know, he’s very sound with his decision making, but we want to try to be like — 95 percent perfect.”

Israel Carter is a dual-threat quarterback who earned quarterback MVP honors at the Under Armor Next All-America Camp. He was invited to play in the 2022 U.S. Army All-America Bowl and scored a rushing touchdown in the game. The Corona, Calif. product averaged almost 21 yards per pass play as a senior, recording 1,863 yards and 23 touchdowns passing with one interception and a 60 percent completion percentage while adding 592 yards and 11 touchdowns rushing that season. He was rated a three-star prospect by 247 Sports, Rivals and ESPN.

NORFOLK, VA — Michael Vick made his public debut as an HBCU head coach, and he brought out Allen Iverson, Tyrod Taylor, and a big chunk of the 757 out to the Norfolk State spring game.

Iverson, a former football star himself at Bethel High School in Hampton, joined the team in a post-game breakdown on a whim and enjoyed every second of it.

Vick was grateful, but he wasn’t exactly surprised.

757 Love

“It was just good to see. Those guys been telling me that was going to come out in support. And I expect to see that all season,” Vick told the media following the game that went just over an hour. “So it’s just — it’s good to have the local hometown heroes come out. Guys who these guys can look at as role models and great citizens of the Hampton Roads and just good people.”

One of those people was Hampton High School legend Tyrod Taylor. Before he followed in Vick’s footsteps at Virginia Tech and eventually in the NFL, Taylor was a young kid who patterned his game after local legends — including Vick.

“Obviously — growing up watching him other guys from this area trying to learn from my game behind him. So definitely happy for him and this opportunity that he has right now to pay it forward to the community, and I’m looking forward to seeing big things.”

Norfolk State quarterback Israel Carter said the words of encouragement from the folks Vick has brought into the program mean alot for he and his team.

“I’m just blessed to be a part of the Coach Vick experience. It shows you guys what Coach Vick is bringing to the table. What we got going on ‘til the fall,” Carter said.

“Just hearing words of wisdom from those guys. It means a lot to us. It means alot to the team, and we just try to implement those. And with those tips, that have brought them so far into our game…I really appreciate Coach Vick for setting this all up for us.”

The community showed up for sure. Namond Richardson is an HBCU graduate of Vorheese College and a long-time supporter of Norfolk State as well. He showed up hours early to tailgate — and he wasn’t alone.

The Vick Effect

“We’re about to find out what the Vick Effect is — what people been associating (with Michael Vick), so we’re about to see what that’s like.”

The Vick Effect brought a sizable crowd that actually paid $10 to get into the game. It also included a trailer full of Norfolk State colored gear with Vick’s trademark “7” on the front and back.

Juwan “Pootie” Carter roamed the sidelines of the field he once called home on Saturday. The Richmond, VA native had a record-setting career at the HBCU, finishing as the school’s all-time leading passer and MEAC offensive player of the year in 2021. He made note of the difference of energy from previous years.

Spring Atmosphere

“The atmosphere is tremendous. You know big change in the culture right now,” Carter said while keeping his eye on the action from the field…You know when I was here the spring game was nowhere near late lit this… You look around, it’s live. Look at plays being made. All left and right. I just feel great to be back home.”

Vick mostly keeps a calm, cool and collected demeanor. But even he was anxious to get things going on Saturday. He showed up on the field two hours before the scrimmage started.

“I just wanted to go out there, get a feel for what we know was about to experience and soak it all in. Appreciate it. And it was very exciting. So that’s why I was out there two hours early, I actually beat all the guys out there. And it’s good. It’s good for your coaches out there ahead. You know, the first one out there. You know it definitely — makes a statement.”

If Saturday’s spring game at Norfolk State was any indication, the Michael Vick Experience is already making a statement and an impact in the 757, HBCU football and beyond.

Former NBA center and HBCU basketball legend Kyle O’Quinn has officially retired from professional basketball and returned to his alma mater, Norfolk State University, as the executive director of athletic advancement. The 35-year-old announced his retirement on April 12, 2025, bringing to a close a career that spanned eight NBA seasons and several international stints.

“Being back at the university means a lot to me and my family,” said O’Quinn in an interview with Forbes. “Going through this transition of retirement, [it’s] not the easiest thing to do, but my university is definitely helping in those efforts. From the hiring process to bringing me on board [and] to my relocating. My family’s understanding [that] I’m relocating, but not for basketball this time. I think that, once again, my university is serving in the space of my life that only they can.

“[I’m] lucky to be back, grateful to be back, love being there every day, love being, going to tennis matches, softball games, and baseball games. All the sports that our university provides and just being that piece that helps turn the page at the university for, potentially, the next Kyle O’Quinn, and many others.”

HBCU to NBA

O’Quinn’s basketball journey began in Jamaica, New York, and led him to Norfolk State, where he played from 2008 to 2012. He became the first player in MEAC history to win the conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. O’Quinn was also named the nation’s mid-major Player of the Year while guiding the Spartans to their first-ever MEAC title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

15-seed Norfolk State University went on to pull off one of the most memorable upsets in NCAA Tournament history as the HBCU knocked off No. 2 seed, Missouri. In that game, O’Quinn delivered a dominant performance with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Propelling Norfolk State to a historic 86–84 victory and marking the most memorable HBCU hoops upset in tournament history.

Following his standout college career, O’Quinn was selected 49th overall in the 2012 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Over eight NBA seasons, he played for the Magic, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers, and Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 5.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks per game across 472 regular-season appearances. After his NBA tenure, O’Quinn continued his professional career overseas, with stints in Turkey, France, Japan, and China.

Executive Director of Athletic Advancement

In his new role at Norfolk State, O’Quinn aims to leverage his professional experiences to advance the HBCU athletic program. He expressed his commitment to giving back to the institution that played a pivotal role in his development. “In this role, I would love to leave my mark, knowing that I helped people navigate the newness of basketball,” O’Quinn told Bobby Krivitsky of Forbes. “When I say that, the game is changing, [it’s] still the same formula, but you have to change things a little bit.

“And then, just having my input on making sure that Norfolk State University stays at a level of being competitive nationwide with the NIL, transfer portals, and things like that. Letting donors and all our resources understand what this newness looks like. But also giving them a flashback of what my time looked like. What we went through, and how it has changed. And using cross-references to make it make sense to people that really care and really want to be a part of the Norfolk State University brand. With that being said, just being that voice in between the university, athletics, and people that want to be a part of it.”

Kyle O’Quinn’s return to Norfolk State is a full-circle moment in HBCU basketball. As O’Quinn transitions from an NBA player to a leadership role within an HBCU athletic department, his dedication to fostering growth and excellence at Norfolk State highlights the lasting connections that can form within the HBCU community.

But she wasn't. How much was based on height? And how much was based on playing at an HBCU?

Despite a decorated college career and undeniable talent, Norfolk State’s Diamond Johnson did not hear her name called in the 2025 WNBA Draft — a decision that sparked frustration among HBCU supporters and basketball fans nationwide.

Johnson’s omission highlights a lingering tension in women’s basketball: how much do factors like height and institutional affiliation impact draft stock?

Chasity Melvin, a former NC State star and WNBA All-Star, summed up the sentiment succinctly: “Diamond Johnson is the most notable that didn’t get drafted to me — and let’s be real, it’s because of her size and the last college she played for.”

At 5’5”, Johnson is one of the smallest players in the draft pool. While her height didn’t stop her from averaging 20+ points per game at Norfolk State and previously starring at NC State, there’s little doubt that WNBA scouts place a premium on size — particularly at the guard position.

HBCU Diamond Johnson
Diamond Johnson was a standout for two seasons at Norfolk State after playing at NC State.

Still, her final stop at an HBCU may have hurt her draft chances just as much. Despite dominating the MEAC and earning national media attention, playing at Norfolk State and helping it win 30 games and knock off two SEC teams still wasn’t enough to help her get selected.

“She’s right there with Amoore,” Melvin added, referring to Virginia Tech standout Georgia Amoore, who was selected in the second round. The comparison is fair. Both are undersized, but Johnson is more experienced, more dynamic with the ball, and equally capable of creating her own shot.

Ultimately, Johnson’s snub was a frustrating mix of bias — somewhat based on stature and almost definitely on attending an HBCU. But her talent is undeniable. Whether through a training camp invite or overseas dominance, don’t be surprised if Diamond Johnson forces her way into the WNBA the hard way.

Zaay Green and Diamond Johnson, two former HBCU women’s basketball stars, are both projected to be picked in Monday’s WNBA Draft. Green finished her college career at Alabama this past season after transferring from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Johnson spent her final two years at Norfolk State after transferring from N.C. State.

ESPN projects that Green will be selected NO. 25 by the Connecticut Sun. Johnson is slated to go NO. 34 to the Seattle Storm in the same projection. SB Nation projects Green going to the Storm with the NO. 34 pick and doesn’t have Johnson being drafted. The WNBA Draft airs at 7:30 pm EST on ESPN.

Green resets career in the SWAC

Zaay Green made a name for herself as a dynamic and versatile guard throughout her college basketball career. A five-star recruit out of Texas, Green began her journey at the University of Tennessee, where she made an immediate impact as a freshman during the 2018–19 season. She averaged 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, showcasing her all-around game and potential as a future star. Unfortunately, a knee injury sidelined her for the entire 2019–20 season.

After recovering, Green transferred to Texas A&M but saw limited action. Seeking a fresh start, she moved to UAPB, where she revived her career. At UAPB, Green became the centerpiece of the team’s offense, consistently leading in scoring, rebounding, and playmaking. Her leadership and talent earned her All-SWAC honors and national attention for her performances.

Green transferred to Alabama last season, where she averaged 15.7 points per game, one less than her 16.7 ppg at UAPB during the 2023-24 season. She’s projected to be a point guard in the WNBA.

Johnson shines like a Diamond

Diamond Johnson has carved a remarkable path through collegiate women’s basketball, blending elite talent with resilience and leadership. A Philadelphia native, Johnson began her career at Rutgers University, where she averaged 17.6 points per game as a freshman, earning Second-Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman honors. She then transferred to NC State, contributing significantly off the bench and securing the ACC Sixth Player of the Year award in 2022.

In 2023, Johnson made a pivotal move to Norfolk State University, seeking a program that felt like home. Her impact was immediate and profound. During the 2024–25 season, she averaged 19.2 points, 4.3 assists, and led the MEAC with 3.6 steals per game. Her performance earned her the MEAC Player of the Year title and a spot on the All-Defensive Team. Johnson also led the Spartans to an undefeated conference season and notable victories over Auburn and Missouri. Nationally, she stands as the only active Division I player with at least 2,000 points, 600 rebounds, 390 assists, and 300 steals.

Former Norfolk State women’s basketball star Kierra Wheeler announced on social media that she is taking her talents to West Virginia after three seasons at the HBCU.

The news comes after Wheeler initially committed to Auburn to play for ex-NSU women’s basketball coach Larry Vickers, who departed Norfolk State’s program to become the head coach at Auburn in the Southeastern Conference. Now, instead of Wheeler re-connecting with Vickers at Auburn, the 6’1” forward will play for the Mountaineers and head coach Mark Kellogg.

Wheeler averaged 15.8 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks, along with 65 steals, 80 blocks and 49 assists during the 2024-25 campaign. She led the MEAC this season in field goal percentage (48.0%), offensive rebounds (110) as well as posted back-to-back seasons leading the conference in total blocks.

Kierra Wheeler helped her HBCU squad win three consecutive MEAC titles.

In three seasons at NSU, the Minneapolis, Minn., native averaged 14.8 points, 1.7 blocks, 1.5 steals, 1.2 assists, 9.0 rebounds while shooting 50.2% from the floor in 98 games. Wheeler and former Spartans guard Diamond Johnson played a big part in NSU becoming one of nine Division I teams to secure 30 wins this season. The Spartans earned the No. 13 seed in this year’s women’s NCAA Tournament and lost to No. 4 seed Maryland in the first round of the event.

Wheeler joins a WVU team that finished 25-8 overall and 13-5 in the Big 12 in the 2024-25 campaign. WVU defeated Columbia 78-59 in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament before losing to North Carolina 58-47 in the second round of the tourney.
