Morgan State is 1–9, but you wouldn’t know it from how HBCU coaches describe the Bears — especially Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson, who just beat them in a two-point grinder. Speaking on the MEAC Weekly Coaches Call, Jackson said, “They fought us tough. Morgan State’s defense is one of the toughest defenses we’ve faced all year. They did a great job and made it a stressful game mentally and physically.”

That is not the language coaches use for an overmatched team.
That is the language coaches use for a problem.

And it’s the reason Morgan State might be the best 1–9 team in FCS football.

A Defense Playing With HBCU Pride

Against Delaware State, Morgan State shut down one of the most explosive rushing attacks in the MEAC. After DSU’s 69-yard opening touchdown, the Bears controlled the line and dictated the tempo.

“Outside of that first drive, our defense did a great job bottling up the run,” Bears head coach Damon Wilson said on the MEAC call.

The Bears held the Hornets under 120 rushing yards — something few teams have managed. Even with offensive inconsistency, Morgan State put itself in position to win the game in the final seconds with a field goal that pushed wide right.

What happened afterward mattered more.

“I saw our guys put their arms around Alex immediately,” Wilson said. “That’s what it’s all about. The initial reaction was frustration, but the next reaction was to lift up their teammate.”

That moment — in the rain, after another heartbreak — speaks louder than the loss.

A Team Hurt by Breaks — Not by Belief

Nothing about Morgan State’s effort resembles a 1–9 team. The Bears have lost five games on the last play or final score. They’ve started a quarterback who entered the year as QB4. They’ve battled through offensive line injuries and special teams swings that turned wins into losses.

But they have not folded.

“There’s no shortcut to the process,” Wilson said on the MEAC call. “We evaluate all year long, but we want to send the seniors out the right way. Some of these guys won’t play again after this.”

Morgan State doesn’t have a culture problem. It has a timing problem.

Morgan State’s season reflects a familiar truth across HBCU football: culture, identity, and belief often show up before the wins do. Wilson’s comments highlight a program built on resilience and accountability — the foundation of every successful HBCU team.

A Tough Year That Shows the Heart of an HBCU Program

The Bears have:

  • pushed top MEAC contenders to the wire,
  • shown legitimate defensive growth,
  • leaned on young talent gaining valuable experience,
  • and displayed unity that mirrors the spirit of HBCU athletics.

In this league, teams often rise culture-first. Morgan State feels like one of them — a team building the right habits, the right heart, and the right foundation before the breakthrough season arrives.

The record tells one story.
The effort tells a better one.

Morgan State is much closer to winning than the standings show.

Delaware State Outlasts Morgan State 14–12 to Stay Atop the HBCU Standings

HBCU football Under the Friday-night lights at Hughes Stadium, Delaware State did just enough to keep its title hopes alive. The Hornets (7–3, 3–0) held off a furious fourth-quarter charge from Morgan State (3–7, 0–3) to remain unbeaten in conference play.

This one was less about offensive fireworks and more about grit. Both defenses combined for seven sacks and five turnovers in a game that looked—and felt—like November HBCU football.

Lightning Start, Long Night

Delaware State struck first when James Jones sprinted 68 yards to the house on just the second play from scrimmage. That burst set the tone early, but the Hornets wouldn’t find the end zone again through the air or on the ground.

They doubled the lead in the second quarter when Amori Francis recovered a fumble in the end zone, pushing the margin to 14–3. From there, the Hornets leaned on defense and special teams to survive.

Morgan State’s Missed Moment

Morgan’s comeback began with Randall Nauden’s 67-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The crowd came alive, the defense forced punts, and the Bears lined up for a potential 45-yard game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

But Alex Amaya’s kick faded left as time expired—his only miss after two earlier field goals. Morgan finished with more first downs (16–13) and total yards (285–283) but couldn’t convert when it mattered.

Defense Defines It

Delaware State’s defense was relentless, recording five sacks and ten tackles for loss. Quincy Robinson led the charge with two sacks and multiple quarterback pressures.

Kaiden Bennett completed 16-of-25 passes for 169 yards but threw two interceptions under constant pressure. Despite the offensive struggles, the Hornets controlled time of possession (31:59) and forced three turnovers to offset their own mistakes.

What It Means for HBCU Football

This win is more than just another line in the standings — it’s a milestone in Delaware State’s climb back to relevance.
The Hornets haven’t posted a winning season since 2012 under head coach Kermit Blount, when they went 6–5. Since then, the program has endured a decade of rebuilding, false starts, and coaching changes.

Now, under DeSean Jackson, Delaware State has flipped the script. At 7–3 overall and 3–0 in conference play, the Hornets have already secured their first winning season in 13 years — and guaranteed that their final game of the year will decide the MEAC championship. For a program long searching for traction, that’s validation.

Morgan State, meanwhile, continues to look snake-bitten. The Bears have played hard, defended well, and had multiple chances to win — but can’t seem to escape late-game heartbreak. Friday night’s missed field goal at the horn felt like another chapter in that story.

The post HBCU Football: Howard Homecoming was a Movie appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
There’s always a little extra magic in the air when Howard hosts Homecoming against Morgan State. The D.C. skyline glowed, the crowd dripped in blue and white, and the celebrity energy was unmistakable. Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainerhandled the coin toss, Lance Gross watched from the sideline, and nearly 10,000 fans packed Greene Stadium ready for a show during this HBCU homecoming..

They got one.

What unfolded between Howard and Morgan State wasn’t just another HBCU football game — it was a full-blown movie. The kind with momentum swings, heartbreak, and a hero’s ending. And when the credits rolled, senior running back Anthony Reagan Jr. owned the final scene, slicing through the right side for a 25-yard touchdown in overtimeto give the Bison a 33–27 Homecoming win.

Two Snake-Bitten HBCU Programs Searching for a Break

Both teams came in carrying baggage.

Howard was still haunted by its 38–31 collapse against Richmond, a game it led deep into the fourth before letting slip away. Morgan State had lived its own heartbreak, losing on a Hail Mary to Georgetown earlier in the year.

For most of Saturday, it looked like Morgan might finally shake the curse. Up six late in the fourth quarter, the Bears drove inside the Howard 20. A field goal there would’ve made it a two-score game and likely ended things.

Instead, the 36-yard attempt hooked wide. In a season where breaks have been rare for Morgan State, that one might sting the longest.

Howard’s Homecoming Chaos

Howard struck first, with Tyriq Starks hitting Xavier Newsom for a nine-yard touchdown to open the day. But the Bison never made it easy on themselves. They were flagged 10 times for 105 yards, tossed a pair of interceptions, and nearly self-destructed when they fumbled a punt with three seconds left in regulation.

Morgan State took advantage of every opening — almost. Quarterback Raymond Moore III gashed Howard’s defense with an 81-yard touchdown run, while Jason Collins Jr. and Randall Nauden each found the end zone. But missed kicks and penalties erased what could’ve been a statement road win.

Reagan Jr. Steals the Scene

When the game tightened, Anthony Reagan Jr. took over. He finished with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, including a 34-yard sprint in the second quarter and the walk-off in overtime that set off a Homecoming roar across D.C.

Backup quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins gave Howard life late, engineering a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown to Breylin Smith with 49 seconds left. Smith’s nine catches for 109 yards and a score kept the Bison within striking distance — and set the stage for Reagan’s heroics.

Missed Kicks and Missed Chances for Morgan State

Morgan State’s special-teams struggles told the story. The Bears missed an extra pointmissed a 36-yard field goal in regulation, and missed a 39-yarder in overtime that could’ve given them the lead. Each one tightened the door until Reagan Jr. kicked it down.

It was a familiar ending for Morgan State — another game that slipped away in the final act. For Howard, it was redemption wrapped in celebration, a Homecoming classic that blended chaos, culture, and catharsis.

Homecoming in the Capital

Howard improved to 4–4 overall and 1–0 in MEAC play, extending its Homecoming win streak to three straight seasons. Morgan State dropped to 3–5 (0–1 MEAC), left to replay what could’ve been.

For the Bison, the night ended with fireworks and family on the field — the kind of moment that captures everything HBCU football represents: community, pride, and resilience.

Because in D.C. this weekend, Howard’s Homecoming wasn’t just a game — it was a movie.

Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has once again made history with a transformative $63 million gift to an HBCU —Morgan State University. This gift reaffirms her commitment to the institution’s mission and momentum. This latest contribution—her second to the Baltimore-based university in less than five years—brings her total giving to Morgan State to an unprecedented $103 million.

A Transformative Gift for an Ascending HBCU

MacKenzie Scott’s newest donation is an unrestricted investment, giving Morgan State the flexibility to strengthen its endowment, expand student support initiatives, and advance its status as a leading research and community-focused institution. The university, now the nation’s third-largest HBCU, continues to gain national attention for its rapid growth, innovation, and commitment to social impact.

“MacKenzie Scott’s renewed investment in Morgan is a resounding testament to the work we’ve done to drive transformation,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “To receive one historic gift was an incredible honor; to receive two speaks volumes about the confidence she has in our institution’s stewardship and trajectory.”

A Legacy of Impact

Scott’s first $40 million donation in 2020 was the largest single gift in Morgan State’s history and helped launch the “Leading the World Endowment Fund,” the university’s first unrestricted endowment. That funding has already borne fruit—spurring the creation of the Center for Urban Health Equity, the National Center for the Elimination of Educational Disparities, and endowed faculty chairs in cybersecurity and brain science.

According to Endia DeCordova, vice president for institutional advancement, “Our thoughtful stewardship of her initial gift has strengthened Morgan’s capacity to grow our endowment and create meaningful opportunities for our students. This new transformative contribution—and her continued trust—affirm that we are not only rising but leading.”

Continuing a Culture of Growth

Morgan State’s disciplined financial management has earned top credit ratings (A+ from S&P and A1 from Moody’s), helping to attract major donors like MacKenzie Scott. The university also recently announced plans for the nation’s first public, nonprofit M.D. program at an HBCU, further cementing its reputation as an innovator in higher education.

“This investment will allow us to accelerate our momentum,” Wilson said. “We’re breaking barriers, advancing equity, and fulfilling our vision to become one of the top public research universities in the country—without losing our soul.”

The Circle City Classic was one of the first HBCU football games held annually in an NFL stadium. Once one of the top HBCU football classics, the Indianapolis, IN-based neutral site classic hit an all-time low on Saturday.

Attendance between the Morgan State Bears and the Miles College Golden Bears was reported at just 3,000. That number represents just 4.3 percent of the 70,000 fans that can fit into Lucas Oil Stadium for a game.

Alice Watson, president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, the organization responsible for the Circle City Classic, attempted to put it all in perspective.

“We compete with over 25 classics now. This is one of the original,” Watson told WTHR. “But we’re really trying to figure out how do we morph it into something that’s a little bit different and more meaningful for the community.”

HBCU football comes to the midwest

The Circle City Classic was born in 1984 out of the vision of Rev. Charles R. Williams, president of the Indiana Black Expo. With no HBCUs in Indiana, Williams sought to bring Black college football — and all the culture around it — to Indianapolis. Backed by major sponsors like Coca-Cola and broadcast by BET, the Classic quickly became more than a game. It was a weekend filled with pageants, job fairs, concerts, and marching bands that turned the city into what many called “Chocolate City.”

The inaugural matchup pitted Grambling State and Mississippi Valley State, featuring legends Eddie Robinson, Willie Totten, and Jerry Rice. It grossed half a million dollars at the box office and set the tone for what would become one of the premier HBCU football showcases. Through the 1990s, the event regularly drew 50,000 to 60,000 fans to the Hoosier Dome and RCA Dome. Games like North Carolina A&T versus Southern in 1994 attracted over 62,000, while entertainment giants such as Babyface and Florence Griffith-Joyner graced the festivities. At its peak, the Classic symbolized Black financial empowerment and HBCU star power in the Midwest.

But the game’s fortunes shifted in the 2000s. Williams’ death in 2004 left a leadership void, while changing demographics and an over-saturated market chipped away at its uniqueness. Fans no longer had to travel to Indianapolis as Detroit, Cleveland, and Chicago developed their own classics. Sponsorships and payouts declined, while powerhouse programs increasingly opted for higher-paying FBS “money games.” Attendance slipped from the 60,000s to just over 30,000 by the mid-2000s, then into the teens by the 2010s.

“We used to not have those challenges with HBCUs. And we’re now competing with PWIs — predominantly white institutions — where they’re paying a lot more for HBCU teams to come and play them. It’s like upwards to a million dollars,” Watson said.

NFL stadium just too big?

Several iterations of the game saw smaller HBCUs from the midwest — Central State and Kentucky State — attempt to fill the void in the new NFL home of Indianapolis — the massive Lucas Oil Stadium. Attendance continued to diminish, and many in the HBCU community felt that larger, Division I HBCUs would help bring that number up. In recent years the game has featured matchups of MEAC and SWAC schools, but it has not come anywhere near its glory days. In fact, that isn’t even the expectation anymore.

“We attempt to fill a stadium, but the reality is if we hit a number that is somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 in attendance, that’s a huge success,” Watson said.

This once-vibrant showcase once brought national attention to Indianapolis and showcased HBCUs. This year it barely filled 4 percent of the NFL stadium it calls home. It is a sobering reminder of how quickly even the grandest stages can fade.

]]>
Earl Richardson, the longtime Morgan State University president who led a landmark fight for funding equity at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU), has died. He was 81.

Morgan State, where Richardson served as president from 1984 to 2010, announced his death on Sept 13. The school called him a transformative leader whose 26-year tenure reshaped the Baltimore campus and raised its national profile.

A lawsuit that reshaped HBCU funding

Richardson played a central role in the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Maryland Higher Education Inc. The group filed a lawsuit in 2006 claiming the state had underfunded its HBCUs for decades.

The case, often compared to Brown v. Board of Education, ended in 2021. Maryland agreed to provide $577 million in new funding over 10 years to four HBCUs, including Morgan State.

Although Richardson, as a state employee, could not serve as a plaintiff, colleagues credited him as the visionary behind the lawsuit. “He was armed with history,” said David Burton, a Morgan graduate who joined the coalition.

Student protests sparked his fight

In 1990, Morgan State University students staged a six-day takeover of the administration building. They protested broken dorms, leaking roofs, and outdated labs.

Richardson, who had marched in civil rights protests as a student, urged them to take their demands to the state. Students then walked 34 miles to Annapolis, forcing a meeting with the governor. That protest paved the way for the later lawsuit.

The Morgan Renaissance

Under Earl Richardson, Morgan’s enrollment doubled and new academic schools opened, including architecture and social work. The university achieved doctoral research classification, and more than $500 million went into new facilities.

On campus, the era became known as the “Morgan Renaissance.” Some called it “Richardson’s Renaissance.”

Lasting impact on HBCUs

Even after stepping down in 2010, Richardson stayed involved as a professor and researcher. He also worked on national boards and commissions focused on education.

His testimony before Congress in 2008 highlighted HBCU struggles. He stressed that Black colleges nurtured top scholars and gave opportunities to students who doubted college was possible.

“We can make them the scientists and the engineers and the teachers,” Richardson told lawmakers. “But only if our institutions have comparability and parity with others.”

Remembering a leader

Kweisi Mfume, chairman of Morgan’s Board of Regents, called Richardson “a transformative leader and stalwart in the fight to ensure a college opportunity for all students.”

Current Morgan president David K. Wilson said Richardson’s legacy “left an indelible mark on higher education.”

TGames against FBS opponents give HBCU players chances to prove themselves. These matchups may not end in wins, but they create important auditions. This year, Marquis Gillis (Delaware State), Andrew Body (Alabama State), and Eric Hunter (Morgan State) each showed why those opportunities matter for athletes with professional goals.

HBCU , Delaware State
HBCU standout Marquis Gillis powers Delaware State’s run game with 123 rushing yards and a touchdown against Delaware. Photo Terrence Pitts
Marquis Gillis: Efficient Every Down

In Delaware State’s game against in-state rival University of Delaware, running back Marquis Gillis was a bright spot. He rushed for 123 yards on 17 carries and added 46 receiving yards with a touchdown. That efficiency—over seven yards per carry—stood out against an FBS defense.

Gillis was the 2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year and remains a steady producer. His ability to run and catch makes him one of the league’s most complete backs. Therefore, his success against stronger opponents adds weight to his résumé.

Andrew Body: Dual-Threat Resurgence

Quarterback Andrew Body first impressed as a freshman at Texas Southern, when he set the SWAC single-season record for total offense per game. After transferring to Alabama State, Body showed that same ability in a matchup with UAB (FBS).

He finished with 431 total yards and five touchdowns. Body threw for 312 yards and four scores on 18-of-24 passing. He also rushed for 119 yards on 16 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run. As a result, he reminded scouts why he was once one of the SWAC’s most promising quarterbacks.

Erick Hunter
Eric Hunter: Defensive Leader Against FBS

Linebacker Eric Hunter faced South Alabama (FBS) last week and made his presence felt. He posted 10 tackles and added a sack in the second quarter. Those plays showed his ability to control the middle of the field.

Hunter has more than 200 career tackles, ranking seventh all-time in Morgan State history. In 2023, he earned First-Team All-MEAC honors after recording 75 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Consequently, his consistency continues to draw attention.

Why These Performances Matter

For HBCU athletes, FBS matchups are more than tough games. They are stages to show they belong on a larger platform. Gillis, Body, and Hunter each proved they could perform against bigger programs. Their efforts echo the path of South Carolina State’s Decobie Durant and Shaquille Leonard, who turned similar performances into NFL draft opportunities.

Morgan State University continues to demonstrate that the influence of the HBCU stretches far beyond academics. According to a July economic impact report conducted by Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI), the HBCU contributes a remarkable $1.5 billion annually to Maryland’s economy. This milestone solidifies Morgan State as a major driver of growth and opportunity across the state and particularly in Baltimore.

A Catalyst for Jobs and Growth

The report highlights that Morgan State supports more than 8,200 jobs across Maryland and generates nearly $71 million annually in state tax revenues. Within Baltimore City alone, Morgan’s presence contributes $891 million in economic activity and 4,880 jobs, positioning the HBCU as an anchor institution for the city’s continued revitalization.

President David K. Wilson emphasized the University’s statewide importance.

“We demonstrate every day that every dollar invested in us returns impressive dividends to the State of Maryland. Morgan is a jewel in the state’s higher education crown.”

Growth Through Investment

Morgan State’s rising economic impact is closely tied to more than $1.2 billion in capital investments over the past 15 years. Major projects include the $171 million Health and Human Services Center, the recently completed Tyler Hall, and the ongoing $337 million Science Complex—the largest academic facility in Morgan’s history. These developments reflect the University’s commitment to expanding its footprint and fostering innovation.

Morgan State, HBCU

Student and Alumni Contributions

The report also underscores the financial role of Morgan State’s students and alumni. Student and visitor spending injects $161 million into Maryland’s economy each year, while alumni working in the state earn an estimated $700 million more annually because of their degrees. This added earning power not only benefits graduates but also fuels long-term economic growth for Maryland communities.

Innovation and National Standing

Morgan State stands out among research institutions for its innovation output, producing more start-ups, patents, and licensing activity per $10 million in research expenditures than the U.S. university average. As Maryland’s largest HBCU and the third largest in the nation, Morgan continues to prove itself a leader in education, equity-centered development, and inclusive growth.

With enrollment surpassing 11,000 students and new academic programs on the rise, Morgan State is on the rise and making its impact felt.

The incoming class brings both elite experience and global perspective. Morgan State added Campbell University transfer Eugene Harney, a two-time Ohio state champion known for his elite defense and mat intelligence The SpokesmanMorgan State University Athletics. The four freshmen include:

  • Antoine Glasgow from Lilburn, Georgia—a decorated state champion and National High School All-American; he’s also the son of a Morgan State alumnus, reinforcing the Morgan State and HBCU legacy.
  • Marwan Mohammed Nazeer, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden—a national champion with speed and tenacity, poised to fill the 141?lb slot.
  • Rohan Bucknor from White Plains, Maryland—bringing local talent and high school pedigree.
  • Bence Veress of Budapest, Hungary—a U20 World Championships representative and Hungarian national champion, adding serious international depth to the 197?lb group.

Head Coach Kenny Monday emphasized the strategic value of this diverse class. “We are fired up about the new young men,” he said. “Each one brings their own unique skill set that adds depth and excitement to our team,” showing that Morgan State is serious about raising its competitive ceiling.

This lineup strengthens internal competition, sharpens practice environments, and improves the Bears’ match-day options. For an HBCU program still in its early years since revival, this recruiting class feels like a cornerstone.

Morgan State Wrestling on the Rise

Since returning in 2022, Morgan State wrestling has been on a mission. The Bears stand as the only Division I HBCUwith a wrestling program—a symbol of progress and inclusion in a sport with limited diversity.

Adding this class demonstrates the program’s long-term vision. It signals that athletes believe in Morgan State and the opportunity it represents. These moves show that the Bears are not just participating—they’re competing to make history.

Why It Matters for HBCU Sports

For HBCUs, Morgan State’s investment in wrestling means more than just recruitment. It expands visibility in a space where representation has been sparse. Each signing adds to both Morgan State’s legacy and the broader HBCU athletic footprint.

Morgan State wrestling is writing a new chapter for HBCUs in Division I sports. With five new Bears set to hit the mat, the program is pushing forward with momentum, pride, and purpose. The road ahead doesn’t promise easy victories—but Morgan State has made one thing clear: the Bears are here to compete, and HBCUs are redefining the mat.

More than 100 Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have long played a vital role in shaping the U.S. educational and cultural landscape. From cultivating generations of leaders to fueling industries with talented professionals, every HBCU remains central to the nation’s story. And today, enrollment numbers at HBCUs are rebounding faster from pandemic lows than at other higher education institutions LinkedIn report.

But which HBCUs best prepare students for long-term career success? That’s the question LinkedIn set out to answer with its 2025 Top Colleges list, which ranks institutions based on the career outcomes of alumni.

How the Rankings Were Determined

LinkedIn’s methodology focuses on real-world alumni outcomes. The platform evaluated its massive Economic Graph, tracking how graduates fare after leaving campus. Key factors included:

  • Employment success: How quickly graduates land full-time roles.
  • Career progression: How often alumni advance into senior or leadership positions.
  • Long-term outcomes: Patterns of sustained career growth across industries.

This approach shifts the conversation from prestige or admissions selectivity to what matters most—whether students thrive professionally after graduation.

When Morgan State University President David Wilson declared in 2020 that the Baltimore-based HBCU would join the nation’s top tier of research institutions within a decade, it sounded like an ambitious long game. In 2020, Wilson announced that Morgan State—a 158-year-old HBCU—would aim for the coveted “Research 1” or “R1” Carnegie classification within a decade.

At the time, only one HBCU, Howard University in Washington, D.C., held the designation, which requires at least $50 million in annual research expenditures and the conferral of 70 or more research doctorates each year.

Back then, Morgan State’s numbers fell well short: $17.2 million in research spending and 71 doctorates awarded. By 2030, Wilson predicted, those figures would align with R1 requirements.

Instead, Morgan State has already surpassed them, according to a report by the Baltimore Banner. For 2024, the university secured more than $65 million in research funding, with projections reaching $75 million next year. Doctoral graduations are also on pace to exceed 100 by spring.

“We are very close to becoming a tenant on the penthouse level of research in this country,” Wilson told the Banner. “When we get there, we won’t be like anyone else currently on that floor. We are distinctly Morgan.”

Building an R1 Playbook

Wilson’s approach relied less on state appropriations and more on strategic investment. He actively sought backing from politicians and philanthropic leaders, urging them to “invest in Morgan” rather than merely fund it.

The results are measurable. Faculty grant submissions have more than doubled—from 165 in 2020 to 333 last year—driving a surge in awards. Multi-year funding now totals $95.29 million from federal sources, $7.5 million from Maryland, and $1.25 million from local foundations.

The Carnegie classifications are updated every three years, with the next round in 2028. If current trends hold, Morgan State will join the ranks of top-tier R1 institutions in that cycle.

Infrastructure to Match Ambition

Morgan State’s research push has been matched by major investments in campus facilities. Last year, the university opened its $171 million Health and Human Services building. This spring, construction began on a $337 million science center—designed by the largest African American-owned architecture firm in the nation—that will house the School of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences and advanced laboratory spaces.

The new science building represents the largest state contribution in Morgan’s history. At the May groundbreaking, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore highlighted that funding for the state’s four HBCU institutions has risen nearly 60% since he took office in 2023.

“Baltimore knows that Morgan State is Baltimore’s University,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott. “This groundbreaking really is the next step in Morgan’s transformation, an investment in STEM programs…and important progress on the road to becoming a top-tier, R1 research institution.”

Closing Historic Gaps

Despite recent gains, experts caution that the path for HBCUs remains challenging. Lynn Pasquerella, president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, noted that historically, these institutions have faced chronic underinvestment from external sources.

For Wilson, Morgan State’s progress signals more than a climb up the Carnegie ladder—it represents a redefinition of what an HBCU can achieve in the modern research landscape, even amid tightening federal budgets.

HBCU star Elijah Williams lined up in purple and gold on Saturday night, and the moment felt bigger than football. The former Morgan State standout—known for his relentless pass rush—was finally on an NFL field with the Minnesota Vikings.

This was no ordinary preseason snap. It was his first chance to prove he belongs. And he didn’t waste it. Williams finished with 1.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hit, flashing the same disruptive style that made him a star in the MEAC.

Why It Matters

Williams’s debut goes beyond Minnesota’s preseason storylines.

  • Proof HBCU Talent Travels: From Baltimore to the NFL trenches, Williams showed the burst and strength that defined his Morgan State career.
  • Roster Stakes Are Real: Undrafted rookies have no margin for error. Disruptive plays are the fastest way to get noticed.
  • Pipeline Power: His performance adds to the growing list of HBCU players proving they can make an impact in the NFL.
A Morgan State Legacy

Williams wasn’t just good at Morgan State—he was historic.

Those numbers didn’t guarantee him an NFL roster spot. However, they gave the Vikings a reason to take a chance on his potential.

Last Take

Elijah Williams didn’t simply “look solid” in his debut—he looked like he belonged. Every snap showed urgency. Every rep was a fight to make the roster. His 1.5 TFLs may not have stolen headlines, yet they sent a clear message: this is not just another camp body.

What’s Next
  • More Preseason Snaps: Expect Williams to see extended action in Minnesota’s second preseason game.
  • Special Teams Chances: Hustle players often earn roster spots here.
  • Momentum Builder: Another disruptive performance could make him hard to cut.
The Bigger Picture for HBCUs in the NFL

Every time an HBCU product delivers in an NFL game—even a preseason one—it fuels the next wave of talent. Williams’s path from Morgan State to the Minnesota Vikings is the kind of story HBCU fans rally behind.

If his debut is any clue, this chapter is only beginning.

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU women’s basketball will begin its 51st season with a mix of national showdowns and meaningful regional ties — including four games against HBCU opponents. Matchups against Langston, Alcorn State, Morgan State, and Alabama State will give LSU both early-season challenges and a chance to honor the tradition of Black college basketball.

A Familiar Face in the Preseason

The Tigers open the preseason with two exhibition games, including an October 30 contest against Langston University. Based in Oklahoma, Langston is an NAIA HBCU program. While the result won’t affect LSU’s record, it provides a valuable test and a spotlight moment for Langston.

Alcorn State Returns to Baton Rouge

LSU’s first official HBCU opponent arrives November 20 when Alcorn State visits the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Lady Braves, members of the SWAC, finished the 2024-25 season with a 14-18 record. This game is part of a key home stretch designed to prepare LSU for SEC competition.

LSU, HBCU

Morgan State Comes South

On December 16, LSU will host Morgan State, a proud MEAC program. The Bears ended last season with a 13-17 mark. Known for their toughness and physical style, Morgan State could provide LSU with one of its more gritty non-conference tests.

Alabama State Closes the 2025 Calendar

The Tigers’ final non-conference home game takes place December 28 against Alabama State. The Hornets, another SWAC opponent, finished last season 6-24. The matchup offers a final tune-up before LSU opens SEC play.

More Than Just Games

By scheduling four HBCUs, LSU deepens its ties to Black college basketball history and culture. These games provide HBCU student-athletes with greater exposure while offering fans a blend of tradition and talent. LSU continues to set an example among Power Five programs in fostering these cross-institutional matchups.

Ready for the SEC Grind

Coach Kim Mulkey enters her fifth season with high expectations. Returning stars Flau’jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams lead a roster stacked with top freshmen and key transfers. The early-season HBCU matchups will help build momentum heading into a challenging SEC slate that opens January 1 against Kentucky.

From tip-off in October to the postseason in March, LSU’s path will cross the country. But it will host four HBCUs at home just one year after Grambling State head coach Courtney Simmons de-cried having to play money games after a 46-point loss to LSU.

“Nothing about getting the snot beat out of us helps us for league play,” she said.

HBCU football continues to produce some of the toughest defenders in the FCS football. Three of whom are on the national radar heading into 2025. Southern’s Ckelby Givens, Morgan State’s Erick Hunter, and North Carolina Central’s Malcolm Reed have all landed on the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List. Putting them in the conversation for the top defensive player in Division I FCS football.

The list, announced by Stats Perform, features 30 players across 13 conferences. For HBCUs, these three standouts represent the elite, game-changing talent that has long been a cornerstone of HBCU football.

Ckelby Givens – Southern’s Relentless Playmaker
  • Position: Defensive Lineman
  • Size: 6-2, 230 pounds
  • 2024 Stats: 73 tackles (42 solo), 27.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 13 QB hurries, three forced fumbles

A 2024 Buck Buchanan finalist, Givens has been the heart of Southern’s defense for the past two seasons. His explosive first step and relentless motor make him one of the most feared edge rushers in the SWAC. Opposing quarterbacks rarely get comfortable when No. 8 is on the field, and his knack for forcing turnovers has changed the course of multiple games.

With numbers like this, Givens enters 2025 as one of the early favorites to win the award named after Grambling State legend Buck Buchanan himself.

Erick Hunter – Morgan State’s Game-Wrecker
  • Position: Linebacker
  • Size: 6-4, 210 pounds
  • 2023 Stats: 75 tackles (47 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions
  • 2024: Limited to 2 games due to injury (8 total tackles, 1 sack)

Hunter’s 2023 campaign put him on the national map, earning him a spot as a Buchanan finalist. He has the length, range, and instincts to impact every level of the field, whether blowing up runs, pressuring quarterbacks, or dropping into coverage.

Injuries slowed him down in 2024, but a healthy Hunter in 2025 could be one of the most dominant linebackers in FCS football, pushing Morgan State’s defense to new heights.

HBCU Buck Buchanan Award FCS football
Malcolm Reed – NCCU’s Shutdown Specialist
  • Position: Defensive Back
  • Size: 6-3, 180 pounds
  • 2024 Stats: 60 tackles (34 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, nine pass breakups, one fumble recovery

Reed has built a reputation as one of the MEAC’s premier lockdown corners. His size and ball skills make him a nightmare matchup for opposing wideouts, while his ability to flip momentum with key takeaways adds even more value to NCCU’s defense.

With second-team All-MEAC honors last season and a preseason watch list nod this year, Reed is poised to elevate his game further in 2025, giving NCCU a legitimate contender for national defensive recognition.

The Buck Buchanan Legacy

Named after Grambling State and Pro Football Hall of Fame legend Junious “Buck” Buchanan, the award has recognized FCS defensive dominance since 1995. Past winners include NFL standouts like Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, and Jared Allen, cementing its status as a launchpad for future stars.

The 2025 winner will be announced on January 3, 2026, at the Stats Perform National Awards Presentation in Nashville. With Givens, Hunter, and Reed in the mix, HBCU football can add another chapter to its proud defensive tradition on the national stage.

If you’re looking for something thrilling to binge over the holiday weekend, Duster on Max should be at the top of your list. Not only because it’s a fast paced adventure each episode, but it also stars a fictional HBCU graduate as its main character.

Set in the gritty, fast-paced world of 1970s Arizona, Duster is a slick crime thriller created by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan. The series follows the unlikely partnership between getaway driver Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) and FBI agent Nina Hayes, brilliantly portrayed by Rachel Hilson.

The HBCU connection in mainstream media

But here’s where it gets especially interesting for HBCU fans—Nina Hayes is written as a proud fictional graduate of Morgan State University. In early episodes she displays a Morgan State coffee cup on her desk and tells her backstory of coming from Baltimore and graduating from MSU. This creative choice subtly weaves HBCU representation into mainstream storytelling, adding depth and pride to her trailblazing character.

Then there’s Keith David. If you don’t dig his deep voice and intense facial expressions, we’ll have to question your taste in entertainment. David plays the top villain in the series, but you can’t help enjoying his character’s personality and struggling to root against him. At least this viewer did.

Inspired by Real History, But Not Based on It

While Duster isn’t based on a true story, it is loosely inspired by the groundbreaking life of Sylvia Mathis, who became the first Black female FBI agent in 1976. The series captures the essence of her barrier-breaking journey, imagining what a Black female FBI agent’s life might have looked like in the early ‘70s, even though the storyline and characters are entirely fictional.

Why You Should Watch

  • High-speed chases, undercover operations, and sharp FBI strategy.
  • Strong HBCU connection through Nina Hayes, a Morgan State alum who uses her intellect, grit, and courage to challenge systemic crime.
  • Top-tier chemistry between Rachel Hilson and Josh Holloway, bringing both intensity and heart to the screen.
  • Visually rich 1970s setting, delivering all the retro vibes with a modern storytelling pace.

Critics have praised the show’s stylish execution, sharp dialogue, and dynamic character arcs. Whether you’re in it for the action, the cultural callbacks, or the refreshing take on crime dramas, Duster offers something special.

In a groundbreaking achievement, Morgan State University became the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to lead a solo pavilion at the prestigious 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale. The installation, titled “ReCall & Response,” is the brainchild of Assistant Professor of Architecture Coleman A. Jordan. Drawing inspiration from West African traditions, the pavilion transforms the concept of the talking drum into an immersive architectural experience, emphasizing themes of rhythm, memory, and cultural reclamation.

The pavilion, constructed with sustainably sourced timber, was a collaborative effort involving students and alumni from Morgan State University, Tuskegee University, and Clemson University. It opened on May 10, 2025, at the Giardini della Marinaressa in Venice and will be on display through November 24, 2025.

The Magnificent Marching Machine’s European HBCU Encore

Complementing the architectural showcase, Morgan State’s renowned marching band, the Magnificent Marching Machine, brought their dynamic energy to Venice during Art Night Venezia on June 21, 2025. The band led a vibrant procession through the city, culminating in a performance at the Giardini della Marinaressa. This event featured a blend of music, spoken word, and traditional libation ceremonies, celebrating African heritage and the university’s commitment to cultural expression.

This European performance followed the band’s historic appearance in Normandy, France, in June 2024, where they became the first HBCU band to participate in the annual D-Day memorial parade. Their international engagements underscore Morgan State University’s dedication to providing students with transformative global experiences.

A Year of Global Engagement

Beyond Venice and Normandy, Morgan State students have been actively engaging in cultural exchanges worldwide. From studying abroad to performing before international audiences, the university’s emphasis on global learning continues to enrich its academic community.

As Morgan State University expands its global footprint, it remains committed to fostering cultural understanding and showcasing the talents of its students and faculty on the world stage.

HBCU wrestling continues its rise as Morgan State standout Darrien Roberts steps into a coaching role at Wyoming Seminary. His path from HBCU athlete to prep school mentor reflects the growing impact of these institutions on national athletics.

Full Circle: From Student-Athlete to Coach

Roberts returns to Wyoming Seminary, where his wrestling journey began. The school is known for producing NCAA stars and national prep champions. Therefore, his return brings experience, passion, and a commitment to developing young talent.

Success on and off the Mat

While at Morgan State, Roberts posted a 12–6 record during the 2024–25 season. He went 8–3 in dual matches and recorded a 2:23 pin—the fastest of his campaign. Moreover, he balanced academics with athletics, earning a degree in Applied Liberal Studies. In addition, he is completing a Project Management certificate by year’s end.

A Product of Morgan State’s Revival

Olympic gold medalist Kenny Monday has led Morgan State’s wrestling resurgence. Under his leadership, Roberts matured into a top competitor and team leader. In fact, Monday praised Roberts’ influence in a statement to MorganStateBears.com:

“Darrien is excited to start his new journey as Assistant Coach at Wyoming Seminary. He’s had a major impact on our program at Morgan with his experience and leadership.”

Wyoming Seminary Gains an HBCU-Built Leader

The Blue Knights recently won their eighth national prep title in 2024. As a result, adding Roberts to the coaching staff strengthens a program that thrives on discipline and tradition. His HBCU-honed mindset, combined with his leadership, makes him an ideal fit. Furthermore, his personal experience at both levels brings invaluable insight.

The Broader Picture: HBCUs Are Producing Leaders

Clearly, this move highlights a larger trend. Athletes from HBCUs, especially Morgan State, are stepping into key leadership roles. Roberts proves that HBCU players do more than perform—they mentor, build, and lead. Consequently, programs like Wyoming Seminary benefit from this rising pipeline of HBCU talent.

Under Armour has launched a new HBCU-focused social media campaign, “Sisterhood in Style,” to celebrate the Spring/Summer release of its latest lifestyle sneaker, the UA Echo.

The campaign spotlights historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and Greek life. Shot on the campuses of Bowie State University and Morgan State University, the series highlights the creative energy and cultural pride found at these Maryland-based institutions.

Baltimore photographer Devin Allen led the visual production. His work captures members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.—the first Black Greek-letter sorority for college women—styled in bold and expressive outfits. These looks honor deep traditions while showcasing individual flair.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded at Howard University in 1908.

The UA Echo sneaker features a striking pink and green colorway, inspired by the signature colors of AKA. It is now available for purchase online at $150.

According to a news release from Under Armour, “Sisterhood in Style” goes beyond a product showcase. The campaign underscores the company’s broader commitment to innovation, culture, and community.

“This campaign empowers the next generation to show up boldly, break boundaries, and define their own style codes,” Under Armour stated.

Bowie State and Morgan State are long-standing HBCU partners with Under Armour. This initiative continues the brand’s focus on inclusive design, cultural storytelling, and authentic campus engagement.

Devin Allen is a Baltimore-based photographer and activist known for capturing powerful images that highlight Black life and social justice. He rose to national prominence in 2015 when his photo of the Baltimore protests after Freddie Gray’s death appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Allen uses his lens to tell authentic stories of his community, blending art with activism.

Committed to youth empowerment, Allen also founded “Through Their Eyes,” a program teaching photography to Baltimore’s inner-city youth.

Regina Smith, the trailblazing coach who introduced acrobatics and tumbling to Morgan State University, has officially stepped down. Her departure marks the end of a historic era and leaves a powerful legacy at both Morgan State and across HBCU athletics.

A Career Built on Excellence

Smith joined Morgan State in 2022, bringing a strong background in cheerleading, dance, and gymnastics. She began her coaching journey after earning a degree in Business Communications from Illinois State University in 2006.

Her early success came at Bolingbrook High School in Illinois, where she led competitive cheerleading teams to state-level achievements. From there, she moved into college athletics, coaching at Thiel College, Ottawa University, and Adrian College.

In 2012, she launched Adrian College’s first acrobatics and tumbling program. Under her leadership, the program quickly earned national respect. Smith’s teams went on to win over 30 national championships and secured more than 50 top-three finishes in cheerleading, dance, gymnastics, and mascot competitions.

Breaking New Ground at Morgan State

At Morgan State, Smith applied her deep expertise to create a program that balanced competitive performance with cultural representation. The Bears became the first HBCU Division I acrobatics and tumbling team, a groundbreaking achievement that reshaped the sport’s landscape.

Impact Beyond the Floor

Smith’s influence went far beyond competition. In March 2024, her team made history by visiting the White House during Women’s History Month. They became the first NCAA NCATA and HBCU team to receive this recognition.

The impact didn’t stop there. In February 2025, the team’s “two feet split with straddle” routine went viral, earning over 12 million views online. Off the mat, Smith emphasized academics and service. As a result, 13 student-athletes were named to the NCATA Academic Honor Roll, and the team completed more than 400 community service hours.

A Grateful Farewell

In a statement, Regina Smith expressed her appreciation:

“After successfully implementing the official inaugural Morgan State acrobatics and tumbling team, I leave with a deep sense of gratitude for the immense experiences I have gained. I am truly grateful for the supporting staff and coaches, student-athletes, and their families for their love and support that has made this historic journey possible. It’s been an honor to serve the Bear community and see the growth of the student-athletes.”

Dena Freeman-Patton, Vice President and Director of Athletics, praised Smith’s leadership:

“She fostered a culture where academic success is prioritized and commitment to competitive success is at the forefront.”

Looking Ahead

Morgan State has already started a nationwide search for Smith’s successor. But this moment is about more than just one coach’s departure. It’s a call to continue elevating HBCU acrobatics and tumbling and to keep pushing the boundaries of collegiate athletics.

The 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships showcased the continued rise of HBCU track excellence. Howard University claimed the women’s title, while Norfolk State University captured the men’s crown—proving both HBCU programs remain powerhouses in the MEAC.

Howard Women Run Away with MEAC Track Title

Howard’s women’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance, continuing their reign with a fourth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Bison finished with 292 points—over 100 more than their closest rival.

The HBCU program’s success was comprehensive. Howard dominated across all disciplines, collecting 14 gold medals and making 28 podium appearances, including three complete podium sweeps. From sprints to distance, every event reflected the team’s preparation and depth.

Star sprinter Kailei Collins claimed victory in the 100m dash (11.28), while teammate Kiya Lawson secured gold in the 200m (22.87) and 400m (53.75). In hurdles, Marcia Sey captured the 100m hurdles title in 12.84 seconds.

Middle-distance runner Camille Egbula earned back-to-back wins in the 800m and 1500m. Joslyn Crosby added a win in the 5,000m. Howard’s 4x100m relay squad—Collins, Sey, Tiffani-Rae Pittman, and Aiyana Gray-Williams—sealed their dominance with a 44.15-second win.

Norfolk State Track Team Secures Men’s Championship

Norfolk State’s men’s track team continued its MEAC dynasty, earning its fourth straight outdoor championship. The Spartans totalled 227 points, separating themselves from the competition.

This HBCU program excelled in both sprints and distance events. In the 10,000m, Gidion Sigei led a podium sweep with a time of 30:36.11. Norfolk State repeated the sweep in the 5,000m behind Sigei, Victor Jumo, and Lewis Too.

On the sprint side, Premier Wynn won the 400m (46.53), while Kendrick Winfield claimed the 200m (20.70) after finishing second in the 400. The Spartans capped their performance with a dominant 4x400m relay win in 3:09.34.

Howard Men Share Second in Competitive Finish

Howard University’s men’s team tied for second place with Coppin State, each scoring 111.5 points. The Bison were led by standout hurdler Noah Langford, who won the 110m hurdles (13.64) and the 400m hurdles (50.65). He later anchored the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish in 3:09.66.

Other key contributors to the HBCU program’s performance included Goba Dan-Princewill, who finished third in the 100m dash, and Chase Drewery, who earned silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.44 meters.

MEAC Track & Field Shows HBCU Growth and Depth

The 2025 MEAC Track & Field Championships reflected not only the success of Howard and Norfolk State, but also the rising strength of HBCU programs across the board. Teams like Coppin State, Morgan State, and Delaware State made their presence felt through individual standout performances.

Although the championship trophies went to two familiar programs, the overall depth and competitiveness suggest a bright future for MEAC track and field. With several HBCU athletes advancing to the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the conference is poised to make an impact at the national level.

As the outdoor track season progresses, HBCU programs in the MEAC continue to prove they belong on the national stage—with speed, strength, and strategy that match any conference in the country.

]]>
Hip-hop icon Jadakiss is celebrating a significant milestone — his daughter, Jaidyon, has graduated from HBCU Morgan State University. The proud father shared his excitement on Instagram, marking a personal and cultural achievement that resonates with many in the Black community.

From Rap Royalty to Proud Dad

Jadakiss, whose real name is Jason Phillips, gained fame in the late 1990s as a member of The LOX. He later became a solo star under the Ruff Ryders label. Known for albums like Kiss tha Game Goodbye and Top 5 Dead or Alive, Jadakiss built a legacy on sharp lyrics and street wisdom. Today, his success as a father stands just as tall as his music career.

A Milestone at Morgan State University

Morgan State University is a respected HBCU located in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1867, the university has a long history of empowering Black students and producing leaders. Jaidyon’s graduation adds to that proud legacy.

HBCU Jadakiss Morgan State University

Jadakiss posted two heartfelt messages on his Instagram account to mark the occasion. In one post, showing his daughter in cap and gown, he wrote:

“Congratulations to my beautiful Daughter @itsjaixo For Graduating from @morganstateu.”

In a second post featuring a touching father-daughter moment, he shared:

“Best Feeling in the world! My baby is a college graduate.”

These emotional messages captured the joy and pride of watching his daughter achieve such a milestone at an HBCU.

A Growing Celebrity Trend

Jadakiss is not alone. More Black celebrities are choosing HBCUs for their children’s education. NFL star Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson recently saw his daughter Chade’s graduation from Prairie View A&M University. Actor Denzel Washington’s son, John David Washington, graduated from Morehouse College. Rap mogul Master P proudly supported his son Hercy Miller when he committed to Tennessee State University.

Why It Matters

When celebrities send their children to HBCUs, they do more than earn a degree. It sends a powerful message, showing trust in institutions built to serve and elevate the Black community. These choices help strengthen the legacy of HBCUs and ensure their continued relevance and success.

As Jadakiss celebrates his daughter’s journey, he also helps spotlight the importance of HBCUs in shaping future generations. Her graduation is more than a family moment — it’s a cultural celebration.

HBCU standout Elijah Williams, a dominant defensive end from Morgan State, has officially signed an NFL contract with the Minnesota Vikings. Although he went undrafted, Williams impressed at the Baltimore Ravens’ Local Pro Day. As a result, he earned a rookie minicamp invite from the Vikings and turned it into a full contract.

A Historic Career at Morgan State

During his time at Morgan State, Williams consistently delivered elite-level play. He finished his college career with 31 sacks and 52 tackles for loss, both school records. Additionally, he recorded 216 total tackles across 42 games. He earned the 2024 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year award. His 11 sacks and 15 tackles for loss as a senior made him a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.

Local Pro Day Helped Launch His NFL Shot

In April, Williams participated in the Ravens’ NFL Local Pro Day. These events are designed to allow regional prospects to perform in front of NFL scouts. Since he played at a Baltimore-based HBCU, it gave Williams a valuable platform to showcase his talent just minutes from campus. Thanks to a strong performance, he gained attention across the league.

Opportunity to Earn It

Williams was invited to attend the Minnesota Vikings’ rookie minicamp shortly after his pro-day appearance. Despite only being a tryout player, he stood out. For example, his quick first step and relentless motor consistently disrupted plays. By the end of the weekend, the Vikings offered him a contract. Consequently, he joined their 90-man offseason roster.

Another Big Win for HBCU Football

Williams’ story is more than personal—it reflects the growing impact of HBCU programs on the NFL. His path from Morgan State to Minnesota shows that elite football talent can come from anywhere. Moreover, it reminds scouts and teams to look closely at what HBCU athletes bring. As he begins his journey with the Vikings, Williams represents Morgan State and a larger movement in HBCU sports.

Morgan State forward Naya Ojukwu is on the move. After a breakout season in the MEAC, the 6’1” redshirt freshman has committed to the University of California, bringing her game from an HBCU program to one of the Power 4’s newest members in the ACC.

Ojukwu averaged 17.1 points and 9.0 rebounds per game for Morgan State during the 2024–25 season in just 15 appearances. Her efficiency and dominance in the paint helped her earn second-team All-MEAC honors. Despite missing several games, she shot nearly 48% from the field and quickly became one of the conference’s most impactful players.

Originally from Idaho, where she was the 2020-21 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year and MaxPreps Idaho Player of the Year, Ojukwu began her career at Utah before transferring to Gonzaga. As a freshman at Utah, she played in four games, averaging 5.3 minutes, 3.3 points, and 2.3 rebounds per game. After receiving a hardship waiver from the NCAA, she transferred to Gonzaga as a true freshman, appearing in nine games. She totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in 56 minutes before transferring again, this time to an HBCU.

Chance to Develop

However, she found her rhythm at Morgan State and delivered on her potential. Her time at the HBCU allowed her to lead, develop, and showcase her skills on a national level. That growth caught the attention of the University of California, which is reloading its roster as it prepares to enter the ACC.

Her departure is a significant moment for Morgan State women’s basketball, which recently saw longtime head coach Ed Davis Jr. retire after more than a decade leading the program. Ojukwu’s move continues a growing trend of elite HBCU talent earning opportunities in major conferences through the transfer portal.

As she transitions to the next chapter of her career, Ojukwu represents the level of talent developing within HBCU programs like Morgan State. Her success underscores the growing visibility of HBCU women’s basketball and the impact players from these programs can have at every level of college athletics.

Morgan State University has named Nadine Domond as its new head coach for women’s basketball, launching a new chapter in women’s basketball at the HBCU, one with deep historical ties. Domond arrives with an elite résumé—and a connection to the only HBCU women’s team to ever play in the NCAA Division I Final Four: the 1982 Cheyney State Lady Wolves.

That team was led by legendary coach C. Vivian Stringer, who helped redefine what was possible for HBCU programs. Domond played for Stringer at Iowa and coached alongside her at Rutgers, crediting her with laying the foundation for her coaching values.

Working with a Legend

“I played for Coach Stringer. Worked for her. Won with her,” Domond said during her introduction. “She showed me what it looks like. That blueprint is my foundation.”

Morgan State University President Dr. David Wilson emphasized the symbolism of this hire, connecting Domond’s coaching roots to HBCU greatness.

“Why can’t Morgan State dream like that?” Wilson asked. “Cheyney did it with Coach Stringer. Now we’ve got someone from that tree to lead our own program.”

Domond has coached at every level—from Rutgers to Grambling State to the WNBA—and most recently turned Virginia State into a title contender. In 2025, she led the Trojans to a 21-5 record, a CIAA Northern Division crown, and their first-ever NCAA Division II Tournament berth. Her leadership earned her CIAA Coach of the Year and HBCU All-Stars Lonnie Bartley National Coach of the Year honors.

Her coaching identity is built on discipline, defense, and unity. “This is going to be a faith-based team,” Domond said. “We’re going to be sisters. We’re going to be accountable. And we’re going to win—on and off the court.”

As Domond walked to the podium, the voice of Morgan State Athletics, Lamont Germany, welcomed her with a clear and confident declaration:

“We got one.” Now entering its 40th season as a Division I program, Morgan State women’s basketball isn’t just chasing success—it’s investing in legacy.

Morgan State stayed true to its HBCU football identity during its 2025 Spring Game: defense first, physicality up front, and quarterback competition under the spotlight.

Held at Hughes Stadium on April 17, the 65-play intrasquad scrimmage featured Morgan’s offense in orange jerseys taking on a fired-up blue-shirted defense. The defense controlled much of the action with pressure, tackles for loss, and consistent energy.

A key focus heading into spring was regaining control of the line of scrimmage. As reported by MorganStateBears.com, the staff emphasized, “We want to be able to run the football and stop the run.”

Offensively, all eyes were on freshman quarterback Raymond Moore III. The Baltimore native is best known for leading Mervo High School to the 2023 Maryland 4A/3A state championship. Now at Morgan, he’s competing for early reps and showed flashes of promise despite a few stalled drives.

Offensive Improvements

“We’ve just got to improve on not hurting ourselves on offense—that’s what really threw us off today,” Moore told MorganStateBears.com after the scrimmage.

Although the offense didn’t consistently move the ball, returning receivers were encouraged by the unit’s chemistry. “We’re all together, we’re all working hard, and we’re getting everything situated,” said Quavel Thornton. Fellow wideout Maurice Crutchfield added, “We’ve definitely made some big strides and we’re going to keep going.”

Morgan State opens its 2025 campaign on August 30 at South Alabama, followed by a home game against Towson on September 6. With a veteran defense and young talent like Moore continuing to develop, the Bears remain focused on being one of the toughest and most disciplined HBCU programs in the MEAC.

Morgan State’s 2025 Spring Game reminded fans of what the HBCU program has long been known for—defense. Held on April 17 at Hughes Stadium, the 65-play scrimmage pitted the offense against the defense, with the blue-jerseyed defensive unit setting the tone from the first snap.

The defense’s performance was fast, physical, and consistent—disrupting plays, forcing third downs, and limiting big gains.

Freshman takes snaps at QB

While the defensive unit looked seasoned, freshman quarterback Raymond Moore III was one of the top storylines for the offense. Moore, a Baltimore native and former state champion at Mervo High School, took meaningful reps during the scrimmage and showed flashes of potential.

“We’ve just got to improve on not hurting ourselves on offense—that’s what really threw us off today,” Moore told MorganStateBears.com.

The Bears also emphasized physicality on the ground, a point of focus heading into the fall. One key element Morgan State wants to carry into the regular season is line-of-scrimmage control.

Despite offensive inconsistency, returning wide receivers remained confident in the progress being made.

“We’re all together, we’re all working hard, and we’re getting everything situated,” said wideout Quavel Thornton.

“We’ve definitely made some big strides and we’re going to keep going,” added Maurice Crutchfield.

With the season opener at South Alabama looming on August 30, followed by a home game against Towson on September 6, Morgan State appears locked in on its HBCU blueprint: strong defense, a tough run game, and a young quarterback ready to grow into the moment. They will also play in the Circle City Classic.

Before Ivy Harrington ever walked across the Miss New Jersey USA stage, she was logging minutes in at an HBCU basketball program, helping Morgan State compete year after year. The former Lady Bear turned pageant queen was crowned Miss New Jersey USA 2025 earlier this month, adding another chapter to her story of persistence and HBCU excellence.

Harrington played four seasons at the HBCU from 2013 to 2017, appearing in 114 games and starting 26. She totaled 457 career points and averaged 16.1 minutes per game over her career. Her freshman season was her strongest statistically, averaging 7.0 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists across 30 games, 20 of them starts. She finished her career with 261 rebounds, 101 steals, and 185 made field goals.

A 5’7” guard out of Neptune Township, New Jersey, Harrington was known for her hustle and team-first mentality. That same drive carried over to her life after basketball.

Ivy Harrington

“Our family dynamic changed drastically after my dad died,” she told NJ Advance Media. “And trying to navigate the world during a global pandemic while grieving made it that much harder.”

Harrington began competing in pageants in 2021 and faced multiple setbacks before winning the crown in 2025. “The pageant world is such a niche space to be in,” she said. “You have to be mentally tough to open yourself up to be critiqued and judged.”

Off the stage, Harrington works in education as a social media manager for the West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District and leads a mentorship program called MVP—Most Valuable Pivot—focused on helping young women in sports. “I want to teach female athletes to become the architects of their identity outside their athletic jersey,” she said.

Now, as she prepares for Miss USA 2025, Harrington is once again representing her state—and her HBCU—with pride.

Anthony Ferrari is taking his talents to an HBCU. The nationally ranked wrestler and younger brother of NCAA champion Anthony Ferrari has committed to Morgan State University, the only HBCU with a Division I wrestling program. His decision signals another big step forward for Morgan State wrestling as the program continues to build under legendary head coach Kenny Monday.

Ferrari announced his transfer via Instagram.

“I’m proud to announce that I will be transferring and continuing my athletic as well as academic career at Morgan State University.”

The former top-15 recruit previously competed unattached at Iowa and spent a short time at Long Island University before making the move to Baltimore.

He joins a Morgan State team that is gaining momentum fast. In just its second year since reinstatement, the program produced three EIWA place winners at the 2025 conference championships: heavyweight Xavier Doolin (4th), Julian Dawson (8th at 125 lbs), and Cooper Lockhart (8th at 165 lbs). Doolin also earned NCAA alternate status, a first for the program since its return.

Morgan State’s wrestling revival has been one of the most compelling stories in HBCU athletics. Backed by a $2.7 million investment and led by Kenny Monday—the first Black wrestler to win Olympic gold—the team has quickly emerged as a rising force in Division I wrestling. Ferrari’s arrival adds another layer of talent and national recognition to a roster that’s already exceeding expectations.

As HBCU programs continue to expand their reach in sports beyond football and basketball, Morgan State wrestling is proving that top-tier talent can thrive at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. With Ferrari in the fold and a solid foundation already in place, the Bears are aiming even higher heading into next season.

The standout defensive end Elijah Williams of Morgan State has received an invite to the Baltimore Ravens’ NFL Local Pro Day, giving him the chance to showcase his talents in front of scouts and coaches in the town he played in college.

Williams finished his Morgan State career with 31 sacks and 52 tackles for loss, both school records. His dominance on the defensive line earned him MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2024 and recognition as a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, which goes to the top defensive player in FCS football. He was also named a Stats Perform and AFCA All-American, capping off one of the most decorated careers in recent Morgan state football history.

HBCU NFL Morgan State

The NFL Local Pro Day is an opportunity for regional prospects to work out at NFL facilities, often opening doors for players who didn’t receive an invite to the NFL Combine. For Williams, it’s a platform to prove he belongs in the league and to represent Morgan State and HBCUs on a bigger stage.

This isn’t the first time the Baltimore Ravens have extended opportunities to players from HBCUs. The franchise has a history of scouting talent from schools like Morgan State and Bowie State and recently hosted an HBCU career combine that brought students and athletes from across the region to their facility.

As the NFL Draft approaches, Elijah Williams is positioning himself as one of the top HBCU prospects in the 2025 class. His invite to the Baltimore Ravens’ local pro day is more than a workout—it’s a chance to continue the legacy of HBCU greatness in the NFL.

Morgan State basketball player Tytan Newton, an HBCU athlete from Stockbridge, Georgia, is reportedly dating reality star Chrisean Rock, according to a new viral video making its rounds online. The footage shows the two kissing intimately, and Rock added fuel to the fire by posting a photo of the pair with the caption “My babbyyy” to her Instagram Story.

The relationship marks a new chapter for Chrisean Rock, who recently ended her long and often chaotic romance with rapper Blueface. Interestingly enough, Blueface has his own HBCU connection—he once played quarterback at Fayetteville State University before trading in a football uniform for the stage. Now, it appears Rock has traded one HBCU athlete for another.

Chrisean Rock, Blueface, Tytan Newton

Tytan Newton, nicknamed “Figgy,” is a Business Management major at Morgan State University, an HBCU located in Baltimore. He’s set to graduate in May 2025 and aspires to become an engineer. Though he averaged just 1.4 points per game during the 2024-2025 season, he made headlines by scoring 41 points during his JUCO days at Panola College. Newton chose Morgan State simply because he liked the school, and he cites Allen Iverson as his biggest influence.

While social media reactions to the new couple have been mixed, many fans are happy to see Chrisean Rock moving on with someone who seems low-key and grounded. Whether this is a long-term relationship or a temporary flame, the HBCU world is once again brushing shoulders with the entertainment spotlight.

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 9, 2025) — In a move that underscores the strength and rising visibility of HBCU athletics, Morgan State University has hired Nadine Domond as the new head coach of its women’s basketball program. Domond arrives at Morgan from Virginia State University, making the transition from a successful stint at a Division II HBCU to take the reins at a Division I HBCU.

The announcement comes just days after a high-profile NCAA Tournament weekend and during the inaugural Women’s HBCU All-Star Game—an event where Domond served as one of the first coaches. Her hire represents a the growing pipeline of coaching talent emerging from HBCU programs.

Domond led Virginia State to back-to-back 20-win seasons and guided the program to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament. In 2024–25, her team finished with a 21-5 regular season record, won the CIAA Northern Division, and reached the CIAA Championship Game. Her teams were known for defensive toughness, ranking 16th nationally in opponent field goal percentage and allowing just 60 points per game.

Her success was recognized with several honors, including CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and HBCU All-Stars Lonnie Bartley NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.

“Morgan has always been a place where excellence is not only expected but cultivated—and that is exactly what we see in Coach Nadine Domond,” said Morgan State President David K. Wilson. “She brings a championship mindset, a proven track record of developing women both on and off the court, and a vision that aligns perfectly with our aspirations for the Lady Bears.”

Nadine Domond, Morgan State, HBCU

Domond brings experience from every level of basketball. As a player, she starred at the University of Iowa under Hall of Fame coach C. Vivian Stringer, where she was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection, a Big Ten champion, and a three-time NCAA Tournament participant. She also won a silver medal with USA Basketball in 1997 and was selected 19th overall by the New York Liberty in the 1998 WNBA Draft. She later played for the Sacramento Monarchs and was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Her coaching career began at Hampton University, another HBCU, and included stops at Rutgers, Grambling State—where she was named SWAC Coach of the Year in 2015—and most recently, Virginia State.

“Coach Domond brings a level of excellence that is consistent with the direction we are taking our athletic programs at Morgan,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, Morgan’s vice president and director for Intercollegiate Athletics.

“Her success as both a coach and a player, her ability to recruit and connect within the DMV, and her commitment to building young women into champions on and off the court made her the clear choice.”

Domond succeeds longtime head coach Ed Davis Jr., who retired following the 2024–25 season after a 33-year collegiate coaching career. Under Davis, the Lady Bears captured a share of the MEAC regular-season title in 2022 but have yet to earn a Division I NCAA Tournament appearance.

“I’m incredibly honored to join Morgan State University as the next head coach of the Lady Bears,” Domond said. “This opportunity comes at the perfect time—not just in my journey but in the evolution of women’s college basketball and the rise of HBCU programs across the country.”

Her hire is the fourth major coaching selection made by Freeman-Patton since 2022, following appointments in football, wrestling, and acrobatics and tumbling. Morgan State is expected to formally introduce Domond in a press conference on campus in the coming weeks.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Penn Relays Carnival is gearing up to celebrate a new class of legends. It is announcing the inductees for its prestigious 2025 Wall of Fame. This year’s honorees comprise four exceptional individuals and two remarkable relay teams, including a record-breaking HBCU relay team from Morgan State. Their contributions to the Carnival have left an indelible mark on the event’s rich history.

The formal induction ceremony is set to be a highlight of the 2025 Penn Relays. It will take place on the final day, Saturday, April 26th, at the iconic Franklin Field. Providing a fitting stage to recognize and celebrate these athletes’ outstanding achievements.

Morgan State’s fabled 1950 record-breaking 4×440 yard Championship of America relay team will be inducted into the Penn Relays Wall of Fame. The HBCU foursome consisted of Samuel LaBeach, Robert Tyler, William Brown, and George Rhoden.

HBCU Penn Relays Morgan State
Record Breakers

In 1950, Morgan’s sensational quartet ran off with the prize race at the Penn Relay Carnival in the record-breaking time of 3:13.6, breaking the previous Penn Relays record of 3:14.8 that had stood since 1939. The team featured LaBeach (49.9), Tyler (48.7), Brown (47.5), and Rhoden (47.5), giving Morgan its first victory at the Penn Relays and vindicated themselves for a disqualification that had deprived them of the same honor in 1949.

In 1949, the Morgan foursome’s track prowess was undeniable, having decisively outpaced a formidable field, including Cornell, NYU, Georgetown, Army, Manhattan, and Villanova. However, a controversial ruling snatched victory from their grasp. Despite finishing behind the Morgan team. NYU was awarded the win based on a claim that LaBeach, a member of the Morgan quartet, had illegally used his hands on the initial turn. Allegedly jeopardizing his team’s qualification. The sting of the decision was amplified by the significant margin of victory. NYU, timed at 3:15.6, trailed the Bears by approximately 20 yards. Giving rise to the presumption Morgan must have done close to a 3.14 for their triumph.

After Morgan’s 1950 breakthrough victory, the Bears established a dynasty, claiming four more 4×440 titles over the next 32 years. This period solidified Morgan’s reputation as a sprinting relay national powerhouse in collegiate track throughout the 1950s.

Nationwide Attention

The HBCU team continued to win at the prestigious Melrose Games in New York City and other meets throughout the country. The historic four ran a 3:09.4 at the Los Angeles Coliseum Relays, two seconds off the World Record. Morgan State College gained widespread recognition. Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, Ebony Magazine, and the Afro-American Newspaper featured the team in their publications. The foursome became goodwill ambassadors for Morgan, both nationally and internationally.

The Penn Relays Wall of Fame was created in 1994 to celebrate the Carnival’s 100th running. The class of 2025 brings the number of inductees to 130 individuals and 117 relay teams. This year’s individuals and relay squads were selected by a panel of Penn Relays experts. Inductees are honored solely for their accomplishments at the Penn Relays; achievements in any other meets are not considered. The Penn Relays office will accept nominations of relay teams and individuals at any time and from any interested party.

The annual Circle City Classic will include two new teams when the HBCU battle takes place in September.

Morgan State and Miles College will clash on Sept. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. It marks the first time both teams will play in the longtime HBCU classic. The bands — Purple Marching Machine and the Magnificent Marching Machine — will also join their respective teams for the popular HBCU showdown.

Alice Watson, the president and CEO of Indiana Black Expo, said that it is important “now more than ever to bring HBCU talent and exposure to the Midwest.”

“We hope that alumni and new fans alike will come out to Lucas Oil Stadium to support not only the tradition of the HBCU football game but also celebrate the talented bands,” Watson said in a press release.

In the 2024 campaign, Morgan State finished 6-6 and 3-2 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play while Miles notched an unprecedented season. The Golden Bears finished 14-3 including a perfect 12-0 mark in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action. Miles made a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs and finished with a national ranking for the first time in program history.

This season, former NFL’s Indianapolis Colts player Chris Goode will enter his first year at the helm of the Golden Bears’ program after former head coach Sam Shade departed Miles to become the football coach at Alabama A&M.

North Carolina Central played in the last two editions of the Circle City Classic. Last season, NCCU defeated Norfolk State 37-10.

Norfolk, Va. – For more than 30 years, Coach Ed Davis Jr. has been a key figure in HBCU basketball, making his mark in the MEAC and beyond. From Bowie State to Delaware State to Morgan State, he built winning programs, developed strong players, and helped shape the future of the game.

As he retires from coaching, Davis reflects on his long and successful career.

“I’ve been in the MEAC since 2000. I had some great teams at Delaware State, had some great teams here (Morgan State), and in the CIAA. My career has been blessed.”

His time in the CIAA and MEAC brought championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and many great moments. But beyond the wins and titles, his greatest achievement has been the players he coached and mentored.

A Player First: Davis’ Roots in HBCU Basketball

Before becoming a coaching legend, Ed Davis Jr. was a standout player at West Virginia State College. He was a four-year letterwinner on the men’s basketball team, which set NCAA and NAIA scoring records in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His experience as a player gave him first-hand knowledge of the game at a high level, shaping his approach as a coach.

Davis later pursued higher education at two prestigious HBCUs. He earned his bachelor’s degree in education from West Virginia State College and a master’s degree in education from Howard University. His dedication to both athletics and academics highlights his lifelong commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.

In recognition of his on-court success, he was inducted into the West Virginia State Athletics Hall of Fame in October 2008.

Building a Winner at Bowie State

Davis began his head coaching career at Bowie State University in 1993. Over eight seasons, he turned the Bulldogs into a powerhouse, finishing with a 171-54 record. His teams won three CIAA championships and made three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Between 1995 and 1999, Bowie State was nearly unstoppable, posting an incredible 110-10 record over four years. His teams played tough, disciplined basketball, a style that would define his career.

HBCU MEAC
Making History at Delaware State

In 2000, Davis took over at Delaware State University, where he became the school’s all-time winningest coach in women’s basketball. He led the Lady Hornets to 171 wins and guided them to four 20-win seasons, the only ones in program history.

His biggest moment came in 2007 when he led Delaware State to its first MEAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. It was a historic achievement for the program and HBCU basketball.

Restoring Morgan State’s Competitiveness

Davis joined Morgan State University in 2012 as an assistant coach before taking over the program in 2015. Over the years, he helped rebuild the Lady Bears into a MEAC contender.

His biggest accomplishment at Morgan State came in 2022 when the Lady Bears won their first-ever MEAC regular-season title. His teams also appeared in the WNIT (Women’s National Invitational Tournament), keeping Morgan State competitive at a national level.

More Than Just a Coach

For Davis, basketball was always about more than just the game. He was a mentor, a leader, and a role model to his players. He pushed them to work hard, stay disciplined, and be prepared for life beyond basketball.

At his final MEAC Tournament postgame press conference, Davis spoke about his love for the game and his desire to bring one more championship to Morgan State.

“I’m not going to lie, this is probably the only HBCU I have not won a championship at. All the others I have. I wanted them to experience what it’s like to be on the other side, go to the NCAA, and be able to pull that banner down on that floor.”

Even as he steps away, his players and former athletes continue to support him.

“For me to see girls out there from Delaware State, Bowie State—that means a lot to me because these girls are now 30 and 40 years old and they still coming back to support me. That means a lot. It really does.”

A Lasting Legacy in HBCU Basketball

Davis has already been honored for his contributions. He was inducted into Bowie State’s Hall of Fame in 2014, and in November 2024, he was inducted into the Delaware State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Few coaches have left a mark on HBCU basketball the way Ed Davis Jr. has. From CIAA dominance to MEAC success, he built strong programs and helped shape generations of athletes.

As he moves on from coaching, his influence will continue to be felt across HBCU basketball.

A true legend leaves the court, but his impact remains.

NORFOLK, VA – The MEAC Tournament delivered an emotional thriller as Perry Smith Jr. led the charge for ninth-seeded North Carolina Central University (NCCU), helping the HBCU to a 79-77 upset victory over eighth-seeded Delaware State at Scope Arena.

The dramatic finish came down to the final seconds, with Isaac Parson delivering the decisive layup with just one second remaining, breaking a 77-77 tie. Smith, however, was the driving force behind NCCU’s inspired performance, finishing with 22 points on a near-perfect 7-for-9 shooting night, complemented by an immaculate 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

Yet Smith’s performance transcended basketball, driven by a deeply personal mission. His younger sister is currently battling cancer, an emotional burden that has weighed heavily on him throughout the season.

“My little sis, we’re very close, and my family is very devastated,” Smith said after the game. “This is a very hard time, but basketball has become my escape, my therapy. I play for my sister because I know she’s watching.”

North Carolina Central, HBCU Gameday, MEAC

North Carolina Central head coach LeVelle Moton expressed profound admiration for Smith’s resilience.

“For Perry to just be out here and still on this team says a lot about his character. He’s fighting through things most people can’t imagine. He’s playing for something bigger, and he knows it,” Moton said. “My grandmother told me the two most important days of your life are the day you were born and the day you figure out why. I think Perry has figured out why now.”

In a tightly contested game marked by nine ties and four lead changes, NCCU relied on emotional resilience and critical free throws down the stretch. Delaware State fought valiantly, led by Muneer Newton’s game-high 27 points and Martaz Robinson’s clutch 20-point performance. But NCCU’s determination proved insurmountable.

This victory propels NCCU into the MEAC quarterfinals, it will face second-seeded South Carolina State. Riding a scorching 10-game winning streak, the Orangeburg, SC-based HBCU represents a formidable challenge. Still, Smith and the Eagles remain focused, inspired, and ready to continue their improbable run through the MEAC Tournament.

Both teams are determined to advance to the MEAC Championship, having split their regular-season contests and looking to settle the score once and for all.

MEAC Matchup Breakdown

Morgan State (14-17, 7-7 MEAC) enters with a potent offense that ranks among the best in the conference, averaging nearly 81 points per game. Norfolk State (22-10, 11-3 MEAC), on the other hand, showcases a robust defensive unit that has consistently held opponents under 70 points per contest.

NSU, the tournament’s top seed, took care of business against Maryland Eastern Shore on Wednesday night and had Thursday off.

Morgan State had to battle to the wire to defeat Howard University in the quarterfinals.

Players to Watch

  • Morgan State Bears’ Standouts:
    • Kameron Hobbs: Fresh off an impressive 33-point performance against Howard, Hobbs leads the Bears’ attack with an average of 16.6 points per game.
    • Will Thomas: A versatile forward averaging 14.3 points per game, essential for both scoring and rebounding.
    • Daniel Akitoby: A powerful presence on the boards, averaging 7.3 rebounds per game, crucial for second-chance opportunities
      .
  • Norfolk State Spartans’ Key Defenders:
    • Brian Moore Jr.: Norfolk State’s top scorer averaging 18.7 points per game, notable for his efficiency and clutch plays.
    • Christian Ings: Exceptional sharpshooter, converting nearly 50% from three-point range, stretching opposing defenses.
    • Jalen Myers: An influential player contributing 11 points and nearly six rebounds per game, vital for controlling the game’s pace.

Crucial Game-Changers

  • Morgan State’s Bench Production: Contributions from Amahrie Simpkins and Kiran Oliver will be critical to match Norfolk State’s depth and sustain offensive pressure.
  • Norfolk State’s Reserve Impact: Terrance Jones and Chris Fields Jr. must make significant bench contributions to ensure stability, particularly if starters encounter foul trouble.

Winning Strategies

  • Morgan State: The Bears must utilize their high-scoring offense to exploit the Spartans’ vulnerability from beyond the arc and maintain defensive composure throughout.
  • Norfolk State: The Spartans need their stout defense to dominate the boards, limit Morgan State’s second-chance points, and effectively defend the perimeter.

The Stakes are High

This semifinal showdown not only determines who advances to the MEAC Championship but also serves as a critical moment for each team’s postseason aspirations. Norfolk State holds a slight edge due to its defensive discipline and the home-court atmosphere, but Morgan State’s explosive offense could create the upset.

Anticipate a very competitive HBCU basketball battle filled with passion, intensity, and possibly a dramatic conclusion.

Morgan State wrestling made history with its first-ever appearance in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships, marking a significant milestone for the only HBCU competing in Division I wrestling. Returning to the sport after nearly three decades, the Bears entered the EIWA Championships looking to make an impact against some of the toughest competition in collegiate wrestling.

Morgan State Earns Three EIWA Place Winners

Competing against powerhouse programs like Lehigh, Army, and Navy, Morgan State finished 11th out of 12 teams but walked away with three EIWA place winners, setting the stage for future success.

Xavier Doolin (285 lbs) led the way with a 4th-place finish, becoming Morgan State’s highest placer in the tournament. Doolin showcased his strength early, securing a decisive 8-1 victory over Navy’s Jake Lucas before falling to Lehigh’s Owen Trephan in the semifinals. He battled through the consolation bracket before dropping a 10-4 decision to Army’s Brady Colbert in the 3rd-place match. Doolin’s top-four finish is a strong sign that Morgan State’s heavyweight division is ready to compete at the highest level in the EIWA.

At 125 pounds, Julian Dawson secured an 8th-place finish, reaching the placement rounds but falling in his final match to Navy’s Nick Treaster by tech fall (15-0). Similarly, Cooper Lockhart (165 lbs) placed 8th, displaying resilience throughout the tournament before losing by fall to Drexel’s Cody Walsh (2:00) in the 7th-place match.

A Strong First Step for Morgan State Wrestling

Although the Bears did not produce any NCAA qualifiers, their first showing in the EIWA Championships proved they could compete at the Division I level. With three place winners, including a top-four heavyweight, Morgan State is laying the foundation for a program that can elevate HBCU wrestling on the national stage.

Morgan State wrestling’s journey is just beginning, and with continued development, the Bears are poised to make even greater strides in future EIWA Championships.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Morgan State University’s HBCU wrestling program is bolstering its coaching staff with a familiar face. Head Coach Kenny Monday announced today the appointment of his son, Kennedy Monday, as an assistant coach.

This addition brings a fresh perspective and a wealth of experience to the Bears’ program. Kennedy, a decorated wrestler in his own right, is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s training regimen, recruitment efforts, and overall strategic development.

“We’re extremely excited to add Kennedy to our Morgan State wrestling staff as a competition analyst and performance breakdown specialist, said Monday. “He has been instrumental in the team’s preparation as we head into the EIWA conference tournament March 6-7.”

Monday added to Kennedy’s accolades that extend beyond collegiate wrestling. “Kennedy is also competing on the USAW Senior Level Circuit, an Olympic hopeful training for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news regarding the passing of Sterling Steward, Senior Associate Athletics Director/Chief Revenue Officer at Baltimore-HBCU Morgan State University, on February 26, 2025. Since joining the Morgan State Athletics Department in December 2022, Sterling played a vital role in advancing our programs, fostering partnerships, and strengthening the department’s financial and operational success. His leadership, vision, and unwavering dedication left an indelible mark on our student-athletes, staff, and the entire Morgan community.

“Sterling was more than a colleague—he was a respected leader, mentor, and friend,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, Vice President and Director for Intercollegiate Athletics. “His passion for athletics and his commitment to elevating Morgan’s programs were evident in all that he did. He worked tirelessly to ensure our student-athletes had the resources and opportunities to excel, and his impact will be felt for years to come. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, especially his three sons and sister, as we mourn this tremendous loss.”

Sterling’s time at Morgan was marked by strategic growth and collaboration, particularly in his work with the Division of Institutional Advancement, where he helped expand opportunities and build lasting relationships to support the University’s athletic programs. BALTIMORE — Morgan State University’s Board of Regents has approved the University’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement, a landmark resolution addressing past restrictions on student-athlete compensation. By opting in, Morgan joins other institutions committed to a more sustainable and equitable model for collegiate athletics while securing protections from future litigation related to name, image, and likeness (NIL) restrictions. Morgan State is a is a Carnegie-classified high research (R2) HBCU located in Baltimore, Maryland.

The House v. NCAA settlement, valued at over $2.7 billion, is designed to compensate former and current college athletes who were denied NIL opportunities before the NCAA changed its policies in 2021. The settlement also establishes a revenue-sharing framework, allowing institutions to allocate resources directly to student-athletes while maintaining competitive and compliant athletic programs.

“Morgan’s decision to opt into the House v. NCAA settlement reflects our unwavering commitment to student-athlete success and our proactive approach to navigating the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics,” said David K. Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “With the full support of our Board of Regents, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our institution, ensuring compliance, stability, and new opportunities for our student-athletes moving forward.”

As part of the settlement, the HBCU will contribute an estimated $231,227 to the payout fund and adhere to the new roster and scholarship limits. While adjustments will be made to team sizes—including reducing the football roster from 130 to 105 players—the University will have the flexibility to expand opportunities in Olympic sports under Title IX compliance. Additionally, Morgan will have institutional control over NIL revenue-sharing and access to alternative funding sources, such as foundation and university-driven revenue initiatives, to enhance student-athlete support. Other team sports to experience roster limits include men’s and women’s basketball and tennis teams.

“Opting in ensures that we remain competitive while continuing to prioritize the well-being and success of our student-athletes,” said Dena Freeman-Patton, vice president and director for Intercollegiate Athletics at Morgan. “This decision allows us to leverage institutional resources strategically, invest in our programs, and create pathways for financial support beyond traditional NIL opportunities. Ultimately, this strengthens our ability to recruit, retain, and support the next generation of Morgan Bear athletes.”

Under the settlement’s provisions, Power Five conference schools were automatically included, while other Division I institutions had until March 1 to opt in individually or through their athletic conferences. The Baltimore HBCU is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and made the independent decision to opt in, recognizing the opportunity to maintain compliance, strengthen athletic programs, and invest in the overall student-athlete experience.

As collegiate athletics continue to evolve, Morgan remains committed to fostering a transformative student-athlete experience, prioritizing compliance, and ensuring long-term program viability.

]BALTIMORE, Md. — The Morgan State Acrobatics & Tumbling team is set to make history on Saturday, February 15, as they travel to the West Coast for the first time in the history of the HBCU program.

The Bears will take on the No. 4-ranked University of Oregon in Eugene, marking a pivotal moment in their journey within the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA).

The Bears enter the matchup following a hard-fought battle against No. 2 Quinnipiac, where they fell 270.565 to 246.745. Despite the loss, Morgan made waves in the sport by becoming the first team to successfully execute a split during an acrobatics and tumbling routine.

Freshman Lauren Perkins stood at the center of the groundbreaking moment, flawlessly pulling the split and helping cement Morgan’s reputation as an HBCU program on the rise.

With this milestone performance, the Bears have set the tone for the rest of their season. The team remains focused on refining their routines, building on their strengths, and pushing the boundaries of what they can accomplish in NCATA competition.

Awaiting them on the West Coast is a powerhouse Oregon squad, led by head coach Taylor Susnara. A former Oregon All-American and assistant coach, Susnara has helped maintain the Ducks’ legacy as one of the sport’s top programs. Known for their skill, strategy, and precision, Oregon finished last season with a 4-4 record and is looking to establish dominance early in 2025.

Morgan State University football is building something special, and this 2025 recruiting class feels like a big step toward making the Bears a real HBCU football powerhouse. After finishing 6-6 last season, Morgan State showed flashes of what it could become, but there were still gaps to fill. Head coach Damon Wilson wasted no time addressing those needs, bringing in 29 new players, a balanced mix of 15 transfers and 14 high school signees. With a deeper roster and new talent at key positions, this team has a chance to take the next step and push for a MEAC championship in 2025.

A New Quarterback Could Change Everything

One of the most exciting battles this offseason will be who takes over at quarterback. Last season, Morgan State’s passing game had its struggles, finishing with just 11 passing touchdowns in 12 games. The Bears needed a leader who could open up the offense, and they may have found him in Raeden Oliver.

Oliver, a transfer from Rutgers and Monroe College, brings the kind of big-play ability that Morgan State has been missing. He threw for 1,429 yards and 13 touchdowns in just nine games last season, showing that he can push the ball downfield. He’s got the arm strength to stretch defenses and the mobility to extend plays, something that could bring a new dynamic to this offense. But he won’t have the job handed to him. Josiah Bushnell, a transfer from Air Force Prep, will also be in the mix, competing alongside returning quarterbacks Duce Taylor and Tahj Smith. Bushnell comes from an option-heavy system, so if he wins the job, expect more designed quarterback runs.

Whoever wins the battle will have more weapons than Morgan State University has had in years.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger at Wide Receiver

Morgan State made it clear it wanted to get bigger and faster on the outside, signing seven wide receivers, including some serious HBCU football playmakers. The Bears averaged just 10.74 yards per catch last season, struggling to create explosive plays in the passing game. That should change with the arrival of Malachi Bryant (6’3”, 210), Cam’ron Jones (6’3”, 184), and Williams Johns (6’3”, 182).

Bryant is a strong, physical receiver who will be a red-zone threat from Day 1. Jones is a true deep threat who can take the top off a defense. Johns has great body control and reliable hands, giving the Bears a balanced group of targets for their new quarterback.

For Morgan State to compete at the highest level of HBCU football, it needed to become more explosive offensively, and this class gives them the pieces to make that happen.

The Trenches Are Ready for a Fight

Football games are won and lost in the trenches, and Morgan State invested heavily in its offensive and defensive lines. The offensive line gave up 29 sacks last season, and the run game never found the consistency needed to dominate late in games. The solution? Bring in three experienced transfers—Evan Cooke (Kent State), Adorian Favors (Tennessee-Chattanooga), and Jerrod Burrell (Akron)—who can step in and contribute right away.

On defense, Morgan State lost Elijah Williams, its top pass rusher, who led the team in tackles for loss and sacks. The Bears didn’t hesitate in finding replacements, signing Christopher King (Monmouth), Logan Martinez (Texas), and De’Marion McCoy (Lafayette). These three bring a combination of power and speed, making Morgan’s defensive line stronger and more aggressive heading into next season.

Rebuilding the Secondary with Size and Speed

The secondary took a hit with the graduation of Carlvainsky Decius, one of the team’s best cornerbacks. He was a shutdown presence, and replacing him was a must. Morgan found the answer in Hiroshi Carr (Air Force) and Kimani Stafford (College of San Mateo). Carr is 6’2” and plays with physicality, while Stafford is a smooth, athletic corner who can run with anyone.

Last season, Morgan’s defense allowed 2,050 passing yards, and teams found success attacking the secondary in key moments. With these new additions, the Bears have a chance to be much stronger against the pass in 2025.

The Right Blend of Transfers and Young Talent

The beauty of this HBCU football recruiting class is how it blends immediate impact players with long-term development pieces. The 15 transfers bring experience and leadership, while the 14 high school signees provide the future foundation of the program. This approach allows Morgan to compete now while also building for sustained success.

Some of these new faces will need to make an impact right away, including:

  • Raeden Oliver (QB, Monroe College/Rutgers) – Likely to be the starting quarterback and bring a new dimension to the offense.
  • Malachi Bryant (WR, 6’3”, 210) – A big, physical receiver who could be a go-to target in the red zone.
  • Cam’ron Jones (WR, 6’3”, 184)Deep threat who will help improve the passing game’s explosiveness.
  • Evan Cooke (OL, Kent State, 6’5”, 315)Experienced FBS lineman who should step in and protect the new QB.
  • Christopher King (DL, Monmouth, 6’2”, 290) – Expected to replace Elijah Williams as the team’s top pass rusher.
  • Hiroshi Carr (DB, Air Force, 6’2”, 190) – A physical corner who can match up with bigger receivers.

A New Chapter for Morgan State Football

This isn’t just another recruiting class—this is a class built to compete for a MEAC championship. With a quarterback battle that could change the offense, bigger and faster receivers, an improved offensive line, and a stronger defense, Morgan State is building a team that can make noise in HBCU football.

The pieces are in place. The talent is there. Now, it’s all about putting it together on the field. If these newcomers step up the way the coaching staff expects, Morgan State could be one of the most dangerous teams in the MEAC next season.

HBCU football fans, keep an eye on the Bears. Morgan State University is coming.

The return of FAMU to the Orange Blossom Classic has opened the door for another HBCU squad to get an FBS payday.

South Alabama has added Morgan State to its 2025 schedule, according to its website. It had previously been scheduled to play Florida A&M on Aug. 30, but that game was taken off the schedule as FAMU returned to the Orange Blossom Classic after not participating in the game in 2024. It is scheduled to face Howard in a rematch of the Celebration Bowl and the inaugural OBC. FAMU released its 2025 football schedule earlier this week.

Morgan State is coming off a 6-5 season in Damon Wilson’s third season as head coach of the MEAC program. It was scheduled to open the 2025 season against Villanova. That game is likely off the table for this season as Morgan State is scheduled to take on South Carolina State on Nov. 1 — the only open date on Villanova’s schedule.

Morgan State will host Towson the following week before traveling to Toledo on Sept. 13. It will then take on Georgetown on Oct. 4 before hosting non-NCAA HBCU Virginia-Lynchburg on Oct. 11.

South Alabama, a program that plays in the Sun Belt Conference, hasn’t played an HBCU since 2021. It played Alcorn State that season, winning the game 28-21. It went 7-6 during the 2024 season, including an 87-14 win over Northwestern State, a FCS program.

Elijah Williams’ journey to becoming the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and one of the top 2025 NFL Draft prospects in HBCU football was built on hard work, faith, and leadership. During a one-on-one interview, the Morgan State star reflected on his path and what it will take to make a name for himself in the NFL.

Coming out of high school, Williams faced challenges with academics that nearly derailed his football dreams. “Coming out of high school, grades was really cheap, really bad,” Williams shared. “I had my senior year, I was doing my work, and I was able to bring my GPA to where I was college eligible. When it really showed me, I’m like, dang, school is actually this easy? I should have just been doing my work the whole time.” A late call from Morgan State, however, changed everything. “I didn’t know where I was gonna go per se,” he said. “I was probably gonna try the Juco route, prep school route. And then out of nowhere, my coach calls me and says, yeah, Morgan State’s gonna call you. They wanna give you an offer. I’m like, that’s crazy. And then Morgan State called me. I wind up committing the next week.”

As Williams arrived at the Baltimore HBCU, his relentless work ethic quickly set him apart. “I’m always going hard at practice,” he explained. “You can ask anybody. Sometimes the players will be like, ‘Yo, Eegs, you want to chill a little bit?’ I’ll be like, nah, bro, gotta go hard. Even on the Thursdays, you know? Just out there grinding.” That determination paid off in his senior year when he broke Morgan State’s sack record with 11 sacks. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “I didn’t get a sack until overtime. Then the time came, he held the ball a little longer, worked the move, went through the back. I’m like, ah man, let’s get it. And then everybody was hyped. It was real genuine happiness. My D-line guys, linebackers, everybody was happy for me.”

Williams credits his father for building his foundation of hard work and his faith for guiding him through challenges. “My father was definitely a big part of my success,” he said. “He really set the foundation. Even though he’s not the Babe Ruth or anything or the best at any sport, he understood what it took. During the summer, I had to stay 105 so I wouldn’t be a heavyweight on the D-line. We’d be down at the park grinding. Then we’d walk across the street, go to the pool, get another pool workout. He made it fun for me. And that’s how I really view grinding now. Like, it hurts, but it’s fun at the same time.” Faith also played a key role in his journey. “Keep God first in everything you do,” he emphasized. “He’s really gonna put you in the situations that you need to be in, not necessarily the places you want to be.”

Over his four years at Morgan State, Williams grew into a team leader. “The team is really leaning on me to perform every day, day in, day out,” he said. “To give a certain effort that’ll set the tone for the rest of the team. Coach Vaughn always says, ‘Elijah, you don’t gotta make every play. You gotta trust your teammates.’ I really understood how to play a specific role, and my greatness can come through the scheme.”

Reflecting on his time in the MEAC, Williams spoke about the intensity of HBCU rivalries. “I’m not gonna lie, I love playing Howard though,” he said. “Great atmosphere every time. It’s never gonna be a dull game.” He also expressed pride in Morgan State’s growth during his time there. “Morgan State invested in itself,” he shared. “Now we have new Thurgood, a new cafeteria. It’s just been a lot of growth here. And I’ve been able to grow as a person as well, not just on the football field but off the football field. It’s really taught me a lot.”

Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, Williams is focused on preparing for the next chapter. “I know I got to really lock in on my craft,” he said. “The things I did in college, that doesn’t matter here. I have to create a whole new name for myself. That can only come about through prayer and hard work.”

From an underdog to a record-breaking player, Elijah Williams’ journey at Morgan State is a testament to resilience and faith, as he prepares himself to possibly be one of the handful of players to hear their names called at the NFL Draft.

Morgan State stunned the HBCU basketball world with a thrilling 78-74 victory over Norfolk State at Hill Field House. The upset victory not only electrified the crowd of 323 fans but also reshaped the competitive outlook of the MEAC standings.

Morgan State came into the game as underdogs, holding an 8-12 record compared to Norfolk State’s 12-8. The Bears, however, showed resilience and determination from the start, taking a narrow 33-30 lead at halftime. Senior guard Kameron Hobbs was sensational, leading all scorers with 23 points, including four crucial three-pointers. His leadership kept Morgan State composed during pivotal moments of the game.

Norfolk State, a perennial HBCU powerhouse, battled back in the second half. Terrance Jones led the Spartans with 20 points, and Brian Moore Jr. added 11 points and seven rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Spartans struggled with consistency, shooting just 25.9% from beyond the arc. Missed free throws also haunted Norfolk State, converting only 52.4% from the line.

Morgan State, HBCU

Morgan State capitalized on Norfolk State’s miscues with an efficient shooting display, making 51.8% of their field goals and a staggering 80% from the free-throw line. The Bears’ ability to score in transition and maintain defensive pressure in the final minutes sealed the victory.

The upset marked a significant win for Morgan State, proving their ability to compete against top-tier HBCU programs. It also showcased the competitive depth of the MEAC, where any team can rise to the occasion on any given night. For Norfolk State, the loss was a wake-up call, highlighting areas for improvement as they aim to reclaim their dominance.

This thrilling game reinforced why HBCU basketball remains a cornerstone of collegiate athletics, blending fierce competition with unparalleled passion.

The HBCU football season is heating up with the arrival of two former NFL stars as head coaches—Michael Vick at Norfolk State and DeSean Jackson at Delaware State. Morgan State’s defensive coordinator and assistant head coach, Antone’ Sewell, is ready for the challenge, sharing his thoughts in a bold tweet:

“I’m looking forward to the competition. It’s a moot point if we don’t have good showings against these teams. I just hope they don’t assume we sweet bc we didn’t play or have long careers in the league.”

HBCU NFL Michael Vick DeSean Jackson

His tweet came in response to former FAMU AD Tiffani-Dawn Sykes sharing her thoughts on the hiring of what she called “non-traditional” hires of NFL stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson over “lifelong” HBCU candidates like Sewell, who has been one of the top coordinators in HBCU football and was thought to be in the running for those same head coaching roles that were filled with more “big name” candidates.

About Antone’ Sewell

Sewell joined Morgan State under head coach Damon Wilson, bringing a history of success from his time as defensive coordinator at Bowie State. While at Bowie, he helped the Bulldogs win three straight CIAA championships, including the program’s first playoff victory in 2021. That year, the defense allowed fewer than 14 points per game, ranking among the nation’s best.

His coaching résumé extends beyond Bowie State. Sewell spent time at Fort Valley State and Prairie View A&M, where he developed several standout players. His accomplishments include mentoring the 2021 AFCA Division II Defensive Player of the Year and multiple CIAA Defensive Rookies of the Year. Sewell has established himself as one of the top defensive coaches in HBCU football, known for his disciplined and aggressive defensive strategies.

Morgan State’s matchups against Norfolk State and Delaware State this season will be watched closely as the Bears take on programs led by coaches with NFL experience. The attention these games bring highlights the growing competitiveness of HBCU football.

As Morgan State builds its identity under Wilson, Sewell’s defense remains a cornerstone of their strategy, ensuring the Bears are prepared to meet the challenges of the season head-on.

Over his career at Morgan State, Williams has amassed 218 total tackles, including 128 solo stops. His career-high performance came in 2023 when he recorded 12 tackles in a double-overtime game against the University of Albany.

Delaware State University’s volleyball team is heading to the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament after capturing its second MEAC championship in three years. The Hornets claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Howard University in the conference finals at Memorial Hall in Dover, solidifying their reputation as a rising powerhouse in HBCU volleyball.

The championship match was a closely fought battle, with Howard University in five sets. Senior standout Valeria Otero led the team with 18 kills, showcasing her offensive power when the stakes were highest. Aaliyah Mitchell delivered one of her best performances of the season, adding 14 kills while hitting an impressive .600. Gerren Tomlin was another key contributor, finishing with 17 kills and 20 digs, proving her ability to impact the game both offensively and defensively.

Delaware State’s defense played a crucial role in securing the win. Morgan Allen anchored the backline with 22 digs, making several critical plays to keep rallies alive. At the net, Hannah Sanders and Martyna Kmuk combined for six blocks, effectively shutting down Howard’s hitters in the pivotal moments of the match. The Hornets’ ability to execute in pressure situations was on full display, particularly in the fifth and deciding set, where they stormed to a 15-7 win thanks to Mitchell’s clutch kills and timely blocks from the front line.

Earlier in the match, Delaware State had to dig deep in the third set after falling behind. Otero delivered two consecutive kills late in the set to shift the momentum, while Allen’s diving save on a key rally ensured the Hornets would hold on for a 25-20 win. These moments highlighted the team’s resilience and determination, qualities that have defined their season.

Delaware State’s journey to the championship was equally impressive, as the team finished the season 17-13 overall and 10-4 in MEAC play. Their tournament run included victories over North Carolina Central in the quarterfinals and a sweep of Coppin State in the semifinals, setting up their dramatic showdown with Howard. The Hornets’ triumph not only secured their MEAC title but also earned them a chance to compete against the nation’s best in the NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament.

As they prepare to take the national stage, Delaware State carries the pride of HBCU volleyball and a roster of standout players ready to make an impact. With their championship momentum and a balanced team effort, the Hornets are poised to take on the challenge and continue their remarkable season.

Howard University (4-7, 1-3 MEAC) faces a significant challenge as they take on Morgan State University (5-6, 2-2 MEAC) in a crucial HBCU matchup. Following a brawl in its previous game, Howard will be without 17 unspecified players due to suspension, potentially impacting their depth and key positions.A source indicates that much of the starting defense will be out of the game due to suspension

Morgan State enters the game with a slight edge in defensive performance, while Howard’s offensive numbers rely heavily on their star players. With the suspensions, the Bison’s ability to execute offensively could be significantly hindered.

Howard University Key Players

  • Ja’Shawn Scroggins (QB): Leads the Bison offense with 1,166 passing yards and 8 touchdowns. If Scroggins is among the suspended players, Howard’s passing attack will take a serious hit.
  • Jarett Hunter (RB): The backbone of Howard’s ground game with 743 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. His absence would leave the Bison scrambling to establish a run game.
  • Kenny Gallop Jr. (S): Anchors Howard’s secondary and has been instrumental in stopping big plays. A missing Gallop could expose Howard to Morgan State’s opportunistic passing game.

The impact of these suspensions will not be known until game time, but losing any of these key players would present a major challenge.

Morgan State Key Players

  • Duce Taylor (QB): Efficient and reliable, Taylor has thrown for 847 yards, 3 touchdowns, and just 1 interception. His composure will be vital in exploiting any defensive gaps caused by Howard’s depleted roster.
  • Jason Collins Jr. (RB): A powerful rusher with 520 yards and 6 touchdowns, Collins will look to control the game on the ground.
  • Andre Crawley (WR): Leads the team in receiving with 513 yards and is capable of breaking off big plays.

Morgan State’s balanced attack and strong defensive front, led by Elijah Williams with 11 sacks, position them well to capitalize on Howard’s misfortunes.

Keys to the Game

  1. Howard’s Depth Test: With 17 suspended players, Howard’s roster will be under immense pressure. Depth and substitutions will be tested at every position.
  2. Star Player Availability: If Scroggins, Hunter, or Gallop are unavailable, Howard could struggle to compete in this HBCU showdown.
  3. Morgan State’s Defense: Williams and the defensive unit must apply consistent pressure on Howard’s depleted offense to force mistakes and turnovers.

Game Prediction

This MEAC matchup holds significance for Morgan State as they aim to finish the season with a winning conference record. Meanwhile, Howard will be fighting for pride and redemption amid the fallout from last week’s brawl. Morgan State’s depth, efficient quarterback play, and defensive prowess make them favorites in this game. If Howard is missing any of their key players like Scroggins or Hunter, it could be a long day for the Bison. Morgan State is in a prime position to take advantage of the situation and close out the season on a high note.

This HBCU battle is not just about the stats—it’s about resilience, depth, and the ability to overcome adversity.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 2, 2024) — The Morgan State defense and special teams unit overcame early issues with the offense and fought back from an early three touchdown deficit to overwhelm Norfolk State 38-37 in overtime to win their first MEAC game of the season.

Coming into this game, Morgan State was looking to snap a two-game skid and put themselves into the MEAC Championship race.

The Bears got into some trouble early. Three plays into the game, MSU quarterback Duce Taylor fumbled on a run up the middle. That turnover led to a 45-yard field goal by Brandon Willcox, giving the Spartans an early 3-0 lead with 11:32 left in the quarter.

Morgan (4-5, 1-1 MEAC) then went on a 12-play drive that ended inside the red zone. That resulted in a 35-yard field goal by freshman Sahr Gbundema that tied the game at three with 5:21 left.

Norfolk State (3-7, 1-2 MEAC) then scored twice in 16 seconds. The first was on a one-yard “tush push” of Jalen Daniels into the endzone with 12:52 remaining. Then another Morgan fumble by Taylor led to a 27-yard touchdown run by Daylan Long with 12:36 remaining. Norfolk State pulled ahead 17-3.

On the next Morgan possession, Taylor fumbled again inside Norfolk territory. Two plays later, a 23-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to Jacquez Jones pushed the Spartans’ lead to 23-3. The extra point from Wilcox extended the Spartan advantage to 24-3 with 11:10 left in the first half.

Tahj Smith stepped onto the field to take over from Morgan on the next drive, injecting a sense of urgency into the Bears’ game plan. The play unfolded seamlessly as Smith engineered a 16-play, 75-yard drive that was capped by a pitch to Collins, who powered his way through the defensive line, diving into the end zone from just a yard out. Following the touchdown, Gbundema lined up for the extra point, and as the ball sailed through the uprights, the Bears found themselves with a glimmer of hope, narrowing the Spartan lead to 24-10 with just 2:35 left to play in the first half.

The Bears used a trick play with the end round from Andre Crawley to Smith for a TD with 31 seconds left. The extra point was missed by Gbundema. Morgan trailed with a score of 24-16. That would be the halftime score.

Morgan’s special teams unit stepped up huge for the Bears in the second half. The Bears started the second half when Myles Miree scored on a one-yard plunge with 1:45 left. The two-point conversion pass was no good. The Bears pushed to within 24-22.

In a thrilling turn of events during the closely contested game, Bryan Stukes came up big for Morgan as he lunged to block a crucial 34-yard field goal attempt. Jadon Carter scooped up the ball from the turf and raced 66 yards for a touchdown with 11:20 left, placing Morgan firmly in the lead with a score of 28-24.

Norfolk fought back with a 9-yard pass from Daniels to Elyja Mitchell with 7:46 left in regulation to give the Spartans the lead back. The extra point was good, making it 31-28 in favor of the Spartans.

What could’ve been a punt return for a touchdown from Malique Leatherbury with 3:38 left was waived off due to a running into the kicker penalty. A few plays later, Smith fumbled on a fourth down play with 2:15 left, which was recovered by the Spartans’ AJ Richardson.

With the stakes high and the scoreboard tightly contested, the Bears faced a crucial test after conceding a turnover. Instead of allowing the mistake to dictate the outcome, the defense rallied together, even though the Bears had to go through all three of their timeouts to help keep time on the clock.

Morgan was down to their last possession at their own 20 with 1:45 left in regulation. They drove 49 yards in 11 plays. It led to Gbundema converting a 47-yard field goal with 22 seconds left in regulation to help force overtime at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan head coach Damon Wilson’s praise for kicker Sahr Gbundema underscores the significance of seizing opportunities.

“Sahr has never kicked in college before,” Morgan head coach Damon Wilson said about Gbundema. “Our kicker went down in walkthrough practice and he showed up. He took advantage.”

“This is the point where you say when preparation meets opportunity, it equals success,” added Wilson. “That’s what he did today. He is always the first on the field to practice and the last one to leave. He’s been preparing for this opportunity and he gave us a chance to win.”

In a thrilling turn of events during the first play of overtime, Smith showcased his pinpoint accuracy and poise under pressure. He found an open Jaden Coffen streaking down the field, delivering a crisp 25-yard touchdown pass that ignited the crowd.

Then on the defense, Elijah Williams sacked Daniels in overtime, which gives him 29 in his career. This broke the Morgan record held previously by Christopher Robinson, who compiled 28.5 sacks. Despite what happened, the Spartans found the endzone when X’Zavion Evans ran it in from three yards out on a direct snap to pull within 38-37.

Morgan State Norfolk State MEAC

With the clock ticking down and the stakes higher than ever, the decision was made to risk it all and go for a two-point conversion instead of settling for a tie. The pass from Daniels into the corner of the endzone sailed over the outstretched hands of the receiver and sealed the Bears’ triumph.

Next week, the Bears take their show on the road for the last time in the MEAC regular season when they head to Dover to take on the Delaware State Hornets. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
