Delaware State football’s 26-13 HBCU showdown with Howard, on Friday night was physical and chippy HBCU game, but the defining moments came afterward in the press room. First-year head coach DeSean Jackson and his players spoke with a confidence that reflected a program transformation—from 1-9 last season to 8-3 and tied for first in the MEAC.

Next week’s home game against South Carolina State (8-3) is winner-take-all for the MEAC championship and a Celebration Bowl berth in Atlanta.

Jackson: ‘It’s a Different Era Here’

The former NFL All-Pro didn’t sugarcoat Delaware State’s performance, acknowledging the Hornets went 4-for-9 in the red zone with multiple touchdowns called back due to penalties.

“Our style of ball, we didn’t really play it today,” Jackson said. “They called back, I think, three or four touchdowns. We’re just continuously making bonehead mistakes. But we’ll get better. We got the win. That’s what matters.”

When asked how it feels to go from preseason predictions of last place to playing for a conference title, Jackson’s response was immediate.

“All along, man, I always knew this was going to be a special team,” he said. “They were hungry—every man to a man was hungry. The expectations were high here. The standard is the standard.”

Jackson addressed the “big brother” dynamic that has defined Delaware State’s recent history in the MEAC.

“A lot of these guys that’s been here, they’ve lost,” Jackson explained. “Teams we’ve played has had more success against us. They feel like they the big brothers. ‘We beat y’all and we’ve been beating y’all. So what makes you think it’s going to be different?’ It’s a new era. It’s a different era here. Our mentality is different.”

John Taylor’s Pregame Message

HBCU legend and three-time Super Bowl champion John Taylor, one of the most decorated HBCU products in NFL history“, attended his first game of the season and met with the team before kickoff.

“It’s been an honor, man, to be in his seat and have a relationship with him,” Jackson said. “He gave them some words of inspiration. Since the first game of the year, we knew it was going to be a special team. He said, ‘Y’all going to win this game and I’m going to be back next week.'”

Jackson confirmed Taylor plans to return for the South Carolina State championship game.

Wayne Favors on His Game-Sealing Pick-Six

Cornerback Wayne Favors III’s 91-yard interception return for a touchdown effectively ended Howard’s comeback hopes in the fourth quarter.

“Somebody got to make a play and that’s just what happened,” Favors said matter-of-factly. “Coach told me—I knew one. So I went, got one. It was like a three-way banjo situation. My man Sam, number nine, made the block for me.”

When asked what it was like running into the end zone: “It’s a blessing, man. Just seeing green grass.”

Players Knew Early This Team Was Different

When asked when they realized this group was special, the responses were direct.

“We won,” one player said simply. “We seen it against Delaware. Now it’s just kind of fulfilled to it.”

Quarterback Jayden Sauray added: “Since fall camp, we had our eyes on the championship. We’re just controlling what we can control and staying focused one game at a time.”

Championship Week Mindset

Jackson emphasized the challenge ahead, noting South Carolina State played Friday and will have an extra day of rest.

“Every moment counts, every minute, every second,” Jackson said. “When I said it after the game, one of our players was like, ‘So what?’ That just shows our mindset and mentality. Toughness, discipline, resilience—those are the words I presented to this team in my first meeting.”

The former Philadelphia Eagles star drew on his own NFL experience with mentors like Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson to shape his coaching philosophy.

“For me to be an underdog and have the success I had, those were my variables,” Jackson said. “In coaching now, that’s my transition—getting my team riled up. It starts here, it starts in your heart.”

Delaware State hosts South Carolina State on Nov. 22 in a historic HBCU championship matchup, with the MEAC championship and Celebration Bowl berth on the line.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Whenever the SWAC and MEAC get together, there’s always a little extra spark in the room. Sunday in D.C. didn’t disappoint with the Grambling vs Howard basketball showdown living up to the hype. Grambling held off Howard 73-70 in a tight, back-and-forth battle at Burr Gymnasium.

Behind a huge night from Jamil Muttilib, the Tigers improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bison dropped to 1-2 despite a do-it-all performance from Bryce Harris.

Jamil Muttilib leads the way off the Grambling bench

Muttilib was the difference-maker for Grambling. Coming off the bench, he poured in 21 points on an ultra-efficient 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range. Every time Grambling needed a bucket in a one-possession game, Muttilib was there to knock down another jumper.

He wasn’t alone.

 • Jimel Lane: 18 points, 7-of-14 FG, 2-of-4 from three
 • Derrius Ward: 12 points, 4-of-9 FG, 3-of-4 at the line
 • Antonio Munoz: 11 points, 4-of-8 FG

Grambling’s bench outscored Howard’s reserves 25-16, with Muttilib accounting for the bulk of that production.

Second-half surge powers Grambling past Howard

Howard took a 33-32 lead into halftime, but the Tigers flipped the script after the break with one of the most efficient halves you’ll see this early in the season.

Grambling by half:

 • First half: 10-of-30 FG (33.3%), 4-of-12 from three
 • Second half: 15-of-19 FG (78.9%), 6-of-8 from three

For the game, Grambling finished at 51.0% from the field and 50.0% from deep. That scorching second half helped the Tigers overcome the narrow deficit and survive a game that featured:

 • 12 ties
 • 7 lead changes

Every trip down the floor mattered, and Grambling’s shot-making down the stretch was just enough to close it out.

Howard’s Bryce Harris nearly fills up every column

Howard’s Bryce Harris did everything he could to keep the Bison in front of the home crowd. The versatile forward stuffed the stat sheet with:

 • 15 points
 • 6 rebounds
 • 5 assists
 • 5 steals

Harris got plenty of help, too:

 • Alex Cotton: 13 points, 3-of-5 from three, 2 steals
 • Cam Gillus: 12 points, 5 assists, 2 steals
 • Travelle Bryson: 10 points, 4-of-4 at the line

As a team, Howard actually shot it slightly better overall than Grambling, going 25-of-48 from the floor (52.1%), 7-of-15 from three (46.7%) and 13-of-16 at the line (81.3%).

The Bison also owned a 27-23 edge on the glass, including 10 offensive boards. But in a game decided by three points, the miscues added up. Howard committed 19 turnovers, which Grambling turned into timely offense.

Turnovers, pace and hustle stats tell the story

The box score shows just how thin the margin was between victory and defeat in this Grambling vs Howard basketball matchup.

Grambling key team stats:

 • Points in the paint: 30
 • Fast-break points: 20
 • Second-chance points: 14
 • Points off turnovers: 19
 • Bench points: 25

Howard key team stats:

 • Points in the paint: 30
 • Fast-break points: 6
 • Second-chance points: 12
 • Points off turnovers: 21
 • Bench points: 16

Both teams finished with 30 points in the paint, and both capitalized on turnovers, but Grambling’s ability to get out in transition — 20 fast-break points to Howard’s 6 — gave the Tigers a crucial edge.

Coffee sets the table as Grambling’s floor general

While the scoring popped off the page, Grambling also got a strong all-around effort from its point guard.

Roderick Coffee III played 39 minutes, running the show with:

 • 8 assists
 • 7 rebounds
 • 7 points on 2-of-5 shooting and 2-of-3 from three

His decision-making and poise helped Grambling stay organized in a hostile road environment and navigate all the late-game ties and lead changes.

Atmosphere at Burr Gymnasium

A crowd of 1,653 packed into Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C., to watch two proud HBCU programs in a nonconference early-season test. The energy matched the box score: physical, intense and tight from start to finish.

With no technical fouls and a combined 29 assists between the two teams, it was a well-played, high-level game that showcased what SWAC and MEAC basketball can offer even before conference play starts.

The Howard University women’s basketball team didn’t just open the season. It delivered a statement against a Big East opponent that could resonate across the HBCU WBB landscape.

The Bison walked into Alumni Hall and handed Providence a 68–56 loss. They used veteran poise, newcomer energy, and relentless defense to grab their first win of the year. Although Howard lost three starters from last season, the MEAC preseason favorite still looked ready to compete with anyone.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Thomas Sets the Tone

Senior forward Zennia Thomas wasted no time. She scored the first five points of the game and immediately created separation. The Kentucky native finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks on 7-of-14 shooting. Her presence helped Howard take a 14–13 lead after the first quarter. Because the Bison have a revamped lineup, her stability mattered.

Bison Depth Takes Over

Howard’s depth changed the game. Freshman Ariella Henigan shook off a slow start and delivered nine points, three assists, and three steals. Her three-pointer before halftime pushed the lead to 34–26. Junior forward Sa’lah Hemingway, one of four returning players, added six points and four rebounds in only 16 minutes.

Meanwhile, April Edwards gave the Bison a steady scoring punch with 11 points. And with Zoe Stewart adding eight more, the bench contributed 25 points. As a result, the Bison controlled the middle quarters.

Defense Closes the Door

Howard’s defense took over late. The Bison forced 20 turnovers and converted them into 26 points against the Big East squad. Providence tried to answer from deep, but Howard shut down the perimeter. The Friars shot just 2-of-19 from three. Because of that pressure, the Bison created separation in the fourth.

Howard University then ripped off a 10–0 run over three minutes. The surge pushed the lead to 58–44 and ended the comeback hopes.

Providence’s Top Performers

Providence had bright spots. Sabou Gueye scored a game-high 16 points, and Payton Dunbar added 12. However, the Friars never found a rhythm due to Howard’s pace and pressure.

What’s Next

Howard women’s basketball (1–0) returns home on Saturday, Nov. 8, to face Florida A&M in its Burr Gymnasium opener. It will be another early HBCU matchup with plenty of intrigue. If the Bison bring this same mix of defensive pressure, depth and star power, the MEAC favorites might be even scarier than advertised.

The post HBCU Football: Howard Homecoming was a Movie appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
There’s always a little extra magic in the air when Howard hosts Homecoming against Morgan State. The D.C. skyline glowed, the crowd dripped in blue and white, and the celebrity energy was unmistakable. Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainerhandled the coin toss, Lance Gross watched from the sideline, and nearly 10,000 fans packed Greene Stadium ready for a show during this HBCU homecoming..

They got one.

What unfolded between Howard and Morgan State wasn’t just another HBCU football game — it was a full-blown movie. The kind with momentum swings, heartbreak, and a hero’s ending. And when the credits rolled, senior running back Anthony Reagan Jr. owned the final scene, slicing through the right side for a 25-yard touchdown in overtimeto give the Bison a 33–27 Homecoming win.

Two Snake-Bitten HBCU Programs Searching for a Break

Both teams came in carrying baggage.

Howard was still haunted by its 38–31 collapse against Richmond, a game it led deep into the fourth before letting slip away. Morgan State had lived its own heartbreak, losing on a Hail Mary to Georgetown earlier in the year.

For most of Saturday, it looked like Morgan might finally shake the curse. Up six late in the fourth quarter, the Bears drove inside the Howard 20. A field goal there would’ve made it a two-score game and likely ended things.

Instead, the 36-yard attempt hooked wide. In a season where breaks have been rare for Morgan State, that one might sting the longest.

Howard’s Homecoming Chaos

Howard struck first, with Tyriq Starks hitting Xavier Newsom for a nine-yard touchdown to open the day. But the Bison never made it easy on themselves. They were flagged 10 times for 105 yards, tossed a pair of interceptions, and nearly self-destructed when they fumbled a punt with three seconds left in regulation.

Morgan State took advantage of every opening — almost. Quarterback Raymond Moore III gashed Howard’s defense with an 81-yard touchdown run, while Jason Collins Jr. and Randall Nauden each found the end zone. But missed kicks and penalties erased what could’ve been a statement road win.

Reagan Jr. Steals the Scene

When the game tightened, Anthony Reagan Jr. took over. He finished with 122 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, including a 34-yard sprint in the second quarter and the walk-off in overtime that set off a Homecoming roar across D.C.

Backup quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins gave Howard life late, engineering a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped by a 16-yard touchdown to Breylin Smith with 49 seconds left. Smith’s nine catches for 109 yards and a score kept the Bison within striking distance — and set the stage for Reagan’s heroics.

Missed Kicks and Missed Chances for Morgan State

Morgan State’s special-teams struggles told the story. The Bears missed an extra pointmissed a 36-yard field goal in regulation, and missed a 39-yarder in overtime that could’ve given them the lead. Each one tightened the door until Reagan Jr. kicked it down.

It was a familiar ending for Morgan State — another game that slipped away in the final act. For Howard, it was redemption wrapped in celebration, a Homecoming classic that blended chaos, culture, and catharsis.

Homecoming in the Capital

Howard improved to 4–4 overall and 1–0 in MEAC play, extending its Homecoming win streak to three straight seasons. Morgan State dropped to 3–5 (0–1 MEAC), left to replay what could’ve been.

For the Bison, the night ended with fireworks and family on the field — the kind of moment that captures everything HBCU football represents: community, pride, and resilience.

Because in D.C. this weekend, Howard’s Homecoming wasn’t just a game — it was a movie.

Howard University alumnus Steve Settle III became the latest former HBCU star to sign an NBA contract, joining the Miami HEAT, the team announced Tuesday. The signing underscores the growing impact of HBCU programs on the highest levels of the sport, following Settle’s standout collegiate career that began at Howard University and concluded at Temple.

From Howard to the Miami Heat

Steve Settle III made his name as one of the most versatile forwards in HBCU basketball during his time at Howard University, where his length, athleticism, and shooting touch helped lead the Bison back to national prominence. A 6’10” forward, Settle was an All-MEAC selection and a key contributor to Howard’s 2023 MEAC championship and NCAA Tournament appearance—the program’s first in more than 30 years.

After graduating, Settle transferred to Temple University, where he started all 31 games in his lone season with the Owls. He averaged 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.0 block per game while shooting an efficient 47.8% from the field and 41.6% from three-point range. His consistency on both ends made him one of the American Athletic Conference’s most complete forwards.

Settle also impressed in the NBA Summer League, appearing in five games for the Miami HEAT between the California Classic and the NBA 2K26 Summer League in Las Vegas. He averaged 2.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and contributed defensively with 1.0 steal and 1.0 block per game. The organization’s faith in his potential has now culminated in an official contract, with Settle set to wear No. 4 for Miami.

Continuing a Family and HBCU Legacy

Settle’s signing carries an intergenerational basketball story. His father, Steven Settle Jr., played at Johnson C. Smith University, another HBCU, in the 1980s. That family tradition of excellence at Black colleges and universities adds a special layer to his professional achievement.

This signing also makes Steve Settle III the second former HBCU player to earn an NBA contract this offseason. Earlier, former Winston-Salem State University guard Javonte Cooke signed with the Portland Trail Blazers after three seasons in the G League. Together, Settle and Cooke symbolize a growing bridge between HBCU programs and the NBA, as more teams recognize the high-level talent emerging from these historic institutions.

Steve Settle Jr. is an HBCU advocate and Johnson C. Smith alumnus.

Settle’s NBA future

Settle’s combination of size, versatility, and defensive instincts fits the Miami HEAT’s culture perfectly—built on effort, development, and discipline. Known for uncovering and polishing overlooked talent, the HEAT could be the ideal environment for the Howard University alum to carve out his niche at the next level.

As the NBA season approaches, Settle’s signing stands as another milestone for HBCU basketball and a testament to the talent pipeline running through programs like Howard University—where the journey from Bison to the big leagues is real.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Michael Vick will lead Norfolk State University into one of the brightest spotlights of the 2025 HBCU football season when the Spartans face Howard University at Audi Field on Saturday, November 22. The 3:30 p.m. ET matchup, presented by AT&T and airing live on ESPN+, will mark the first non-classic HBCU football game ever hosted at Audi Field — a fitting stage for the NFL legend’s first year as a head coach.

For the past five years, Audi Field has become a cornerstone for HBCU football in the nation’s capital through events like the Truth and Service Classic. Now, the venue adds another chapter to its legacy with Michael Vick and Norfolk State making their debut appearance. Howard, meanwhile, returns for its sixth all-time game at the stadium, where it has become a familiar and proud representative of the MEAC.

“We’re excited to see Howard University Football back for a second game this year and to welcome Norfolk State University to Audi Field for the first time,” said Danita Johnson, D.C. United President of Business Operations. “These events showcase culture, tradition, and community pride — and we’re honored to celebrate HBCU excellence here in the nation’s capital.”

Howard, HBCU, MEAC

The rivalry between Howard and Norfolk State spans more than four decades. The Bison hold a 20–10 series advantage, but the Spartans edged out a 21–20 win in their most recent meeting last fall. This year’s rematch carries extra intrigue, with Michael Vick’s high-energy offense looking to close his inaugural campaign on a high note.

“Our guys have worked all year for moments like this,” said Michael Vick. “To close the season at Audi Field, a big-time stage in front of our fans and alumni in D.C., means a lot. It’s another chance to represent Norfolk State the right way, embrace the moment, compete hard, and make Spartan Nation proud.”

Howard enters the matchup with renewed confidence under head coach Larry Scott, who has guided the Bison to back-to-back MEAC titles and a 3–2 record this season. “Playing at Audi Field always means a lot to our players, alumni, and fans,” said Scott. “Facing a respected opponent led by Coach Vick adds even more excitement. These games highlight the best of HBCU football — talent, tradition, and togetherness.”

Fans can expect a weekend filled with music, culture, and celebration as HBCU football once again takes center stage in the nation’s capital. Tickets for the showdown between Howard and Norfolk State are available at www.audifield.com.

Howard’s HBCU football team looked ready to make a statement against Richmond. The Bison dominated possession, ran the ball with authority, and forced the Spiders into mistakes. A 52-yard touchdown burst by Anthony Reagan Jr. set the tone, and the defense followed with a safety before the offense added a field goal. By halftime, Howard led 12–0 and had outgained Richmond by more than 100 yards. The Bison were winning at the line of scrimmage, holding Richmond’s offense to just 35 passing yards while piling up first downs. This was the type of complete first half HBCU fans expect from a contender.

Fourth-Quarter Collapse

But games are decided in the fourth quarter, and that’s where this showdown turned. Richmond’s offense came alive thanks to big plays and costly Howard turnovers. The Spiders struck quickly with a 42-yard touchdown run. Minutes later, a Howard interception was returned inside the 10-yard line, setting up another touchdown that gave Richmond the lead 13-12. Despite still controlling the clock and field position, Howard failed to respond. Two missed field goals in the second half loomed large, including one late in the fourth quarter that could have flipped the score.

What the Numbers Say

The numbers highlight how frustrating this matchup was for the Bison. Howard held the ball for over 42 minutes compared to just 17:51 for Richmond. They produced 22 first downs to Richmond’s 10 and outgained the Spiders 297–152 in total yardage. Reagan Jr. finished with 129 rushing yards, proving again why he is one of the most reliable backs in HBCU football. On defense, Howard forced Richmond into 2-of-9 on third downs and limited its quarterbacks to four completions all game. Yet the three turnovers, four sacks allowed, and the special teams miscues decided the outcome.

What It Means for Howard

For HBCU fans, this game is a reminder of how slim the margin is against established FCS programs. Howard showed toughness, a dominant ground game, and a defense that controlled most of the day. Still, late-game execution remains the hurdle. In MEAC play, the Bison must turn statistical dominance into victories. The result was painful, but this HBCU performance also showed that Howard has the talent to compete for a conference championship.

In the past six years, all three have won titles, turning the Big Three into must-watch HBCU action.

MEAC volleyball has shifted into a new era. For much of the last decade, Howard University owned the conference. But in the past six seasons, Delaware State and Coppin State have stepped up to create a true three-team battle at the top of HBCU volleyball.

MEAC Volleyball Champions, 2019–2024

 • 2019: Howard wins the championship
 • 2020: No tournament (COVID-19)
 • 2021: Howard wins again
 • 2022: Delaware State claims first title since 1986
 • 2023: Coppin State wins first-ever championship
 • 2024: Delaware State adds a second crown in three years

Championship Tally (2019–2024)

Coppin State: 1 title (2023)

Howard: 2 titles (2019, 2021)

Delaware State: 2 titles (2022, 2024)

Howard: The Consistent Threat

Howard reached the finals three times in the past six years and won twice. The Bison remain the dynasty of MEAC volleyball, producing stars like HBCU Rya McKinnon, who continues to dominate as one of the league’s most recognizable faces. Howard’s tradition of winning ensures they always enter the season as the team to beat.

Delaware State: The Emerging Force

Delaware State reached the championship match in 2022 and 2024, and the Hornets walked away with the trophy both times. Their 2022 run ended a decades-long drought and signaled a new chapter in program history. By winning again in 2024, DSU proved it was no fluke. They are now firmly part of the championship conversation.

Coppin State: From Spoiler to Champion

Coppin State played in the MEAC finals twice during this stretch and stunned the league in 2023 with its first-ever title. The Eagles turned their spoiler reputation into legitimacy by sweeping Howard in the championship match. That win solidified Coppin as a permanent member of the conference’s elite.

Why the Big Three Rivalry Means Everything in MEAC Volleyball

The MEAC only sends one team to the NCAA Tournament each season. That means when Howard, Delaware State, and Coppin State collide, the stakes are enormous. Every matchup between them feels like postseason elimination, even in the regular season.

This three-way rivalry brings parity, unpredictability, and star power to a league that once felt predictable. For HBCU sports fans, it makes volleyball a must-watch sport alongside football and basketball. The Big Three rivalry doesn’t just decide the conference—it defines the path to March.

What’s Next

Howard enters 2025 as the preseason favorite, with Delaware State close behind and Coppin State ready to strike again. The road to the NCAA Tournament runs straight through the Big Three of MEAC volleyball, and every game promises the kind of drama fans live for.

Ian Wheeler’s NFL journey was already the stuff of underdog legend. The former HBCU star from Howard University burst onto the scene in the 2024 preseason. Wheeler rushed for 52 yards and two touchdowns in three games for the Chicago Bears — including a highlight performance against Buffalo that had fans chanting his name.

But in the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, his momentum came to a gut-wrenching halt. A torn ACL ended his rookie season before it began.

Nearly a year later, Wheeler is back, making the most of his second chance. In his first game since the injury, the HBCU product posted 20 rushing yards, 14 receiving yards, and even crossed the goal line before a penalty wiped out his touchdown. More importantly, he proved he could take hits, make cuts, and compete at full speed again.

“It felt good to get out there and compete,” Wheeler said. “Practice isn’t the same as a game. It took me a second to get in the groove. But it felt good to really go out there, get hit, make contact, and play ball again.”

From Hard Knocks Heartbreak to NFL Hope

Wheeler’s injury was captured on HBO’s Hard Knocks: Training Camp With the Chicago Bears, in a scene that struck a chord with fans nationwide. Cameras rolled as general manager Ryan Poles told the undrafted HBCU rookie from Howard University that his season was over. Poles also assured him the team’s door and his phone line were always open.

The moment was raw and real, capped by an emotional embrace between Wheeler and his mother, Beaura, that went viral after the NFL posted it on social media.

“Being an undrafted guy from a smaller school like Howard, having the GM believe in me meant a lot,” Wheeler said.

The Long Road Back

Rehab was grueling. Ian Wheeler spent months in the training room, using blood-flow restriction therapy, grinding through single-leg strength work, and fighting through the mental toll of a long recovery. There were no major setbacks, but there were plenty of quiet battles.

“It’s almost a year now — honestly a mental grind more than anything,” Wheeler said.

Despite missing the entire season, Wheeler stayed involved with the team and continued his off-field impact as a longtime volunteer with Grassroots Health. Wheeler mentored youth in Washington, D.C., inspiring the Bears to donate to the program in his name.

HBCU Pride and NFL Dreams

Before the injury, Wheeler had already proven he belonged. At Howard University, he racked up nearly 2,500 all-purpose yards, returned a school-record three kickoffs for touchdowns, and earned MEAC All-Academic honors with a 3.57 GPA. He even deferred medical school to pursue the NFL dream.

With a new Bears coaching staff under Ben Johnson, and a roster spot once again within reach. Ian Wheeler is determined to make the most of this chapter.

“Nothing is guaranteed,” Wheeler said. “Coming from a smaller school and making an impact reminds people that good football is good football. Just stepping into an NFL building is a blessing — and I’m not taking that for granted.”

Wheeler’s Chicago Bears comeback isn’t just about yards and touchdowns. It’s about resilience, faith, and the quiet decision to keep moving forward when the easier option is to quit. If he keeps playing like he did in his return, the next Hard Knocks moment might be him celebrating a roster spot — not a setback.

Howard University enters the 2025 season with high expectations, once again earning the top spot in the Northeast Conference (NEC) women’s soccer preseason poll. The league announced the results on Tuesday, with the Bison receiving seven first-place votes from the conference’s head coaches.

Dominant Run in 2024

Howard delivered a historic campaign in 2024. The team finished 11-5-5 overall and posted an 8-1-1 record in NEC play. That success led to their first-ever NEC regular season and tournament titles. As a result, the Bison earned their third NCAA Tournament appearance and their first since 2018.

Core Talent Returns

Head coach Brent Leiba brings back a strong lineup featuring four major award winners from last season. This experienced group gives Howard a solid foundation for its title defense.

 • Goalkeeper Trinity Knox earned her second straight NEC Goalkeeper of the Year award. She became the first back-to-back winner since 2018. Knox recorded six clean sheets in 2024 and holds a 1.29 goals-against average over the past two seasons.
 • Defender Rachel Suttle anchored the backline, starting all 21 matches. She played every minute in 18 games and scored three goals, earning NEC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
 • Midfielder Samantha James contributed five goals and five assists. Her 15 points ranked fifth in the conference. She returns as a dynamic playmaker and a rising junior.
 • Forward Gabriella Garcia-Terrell, last year’s NEC Rookie of the Year, scored five goals and added two assists. Her 12 points showcased her potential as a scoring threat.

All four players earned spots on the All-NEC First Team.

NEC Poll Rankings

Howard’s selection as preseason favorite marks a significant milestone. Yet, history suggests repeating won’t be easy. In 30 years of NEC women’s soccer, only 10 teams have retained their title the following season.

Here’s the full 2025 preseason poll:

 1. Howard (7 first-place votes)
 2. Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) (4 first-place votes) – Finished third in 2024 and lost 2-0 to Howard in the NEC final.
 3. Wagner (1 first-place vote) – Placed second in the regular season and fell to FDU in the semifinals.
 4. Stonehill – Now NCAA Tournament eligible after completing its Division I transition.
 5. Central Connecticut State
 6. LIU
 7. Saint Francis
 8. Mercyhurst
 9. Le Moyne
 10. New Haven – Competing in its first NEC season as a Division I program.
 11. Chicago State
 12. Delaware State

Looking Ahead

The Bison will kick off their 2025 campaign on Thursday, August 14, at home against North Florida. The match begins at 7 p.m. at Greene Stadium.

With returning stars and growing momentum, Howard is not just aiming to defend its title. The team wants to elevate its legacy and push deeper into the NCAA Tournament. The pieces are in place. Now it’s time to execute.

The 2025 Toyota USATF Outdoor & Para National Championships concluded Sunday in Eugene, Oregon, with a standout performance from former Howard University hurdler Dylan Beard of Baltimore. Beard clinched his place on Team USA for the upcoming 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, delivering a stellar showing in the 110-meter hurdles.

Beard clocked a blazing 13.04 seconds in the final round to finish third overall, sealing his trip to Japan. This accomplishment adds to an already impressive year for the three-time MEAC Champion, who earlier defended his title at the prestigious Millrose Games, where he recorded a 7.38 in the 60-meter hurdles.

Joining Beard in Tokyo are Ja’Kobe Tharp, who took first place with a time of 13.01, and Cordell Tinch, who placed second at 13.03. The trio will represent Team USA in the 110-meter hurdles on the global stage.

Close Calls for Wright and Smith in the 400m Hurdles

In the women’s 400-meter hurdles, two accomplished athletes with HBCU ties came within reach of World Championship qualification. Jessica Wright, a two-time All-American from Durham, North Carolina, and Ariana Smith, a two-time MEAC Champion from Pennsville, New Jersey, gave strong efforts but ultimately missed the mark. Wright finished fifth in 55.81 seconds, while Smith crossed the line eighth with a time of 56.85.

British Hopes Fall Just Short in Hurdles Final

Competing overseas, fellow Howard All-Americans Marcia Sey and Samuel Bennett, both representing the United Kingdom, advanced to the final round of their respective 100-meter hurdles events. However, neither was able to secure a qualifying position for Tokyo. Sey hails from London, and Bennett from Langdon Hills.

Eyes on Tokyo: Beard Leads the Charge

With the 2025 World Championships set for September 13–21 in Tokyo, Dylan Beard will carry the HBCU banner onto the world stage. His journey from MEAC champion to global competitor is a testament to both his determination and Howard University’s growing legacy in track and field.

Howard University, a leading HBCU, has launched Howard University Hospitality, a bold new vision for campus dining, in partnership with Aramark Collegiate Hospitality. The initiative aims to reimagine food service through culinary innovation, cultural celebration, and student-centered design.

A Fresh Take on Campus Dining

As the only HBCU with R1 research status, Howard continues to raise the bar for student services. The new program will revitalize dining spaces, enhance food quality, and plan for future growth. Moody Nolan, a top architectural firm, will design spaces that honor Howard’s legacy and reflect its future.

“We are excited to work with Aramark to deliver a top-tier dining experience,” said LaNiece Tyree, assistant vice president of Auxiliary Enterprises.

Focused on Students and Community

Howard University Hospitality will introduce modern meal plans, allergen-sensitive options, and improved feedback tools. It will also prioritize working with local and Black-owned businesses.

“Howard University represents excellence and global leadership,” said Jack Donovan, CEO of Aramark Collegiate Hospitality. “We’re proud to build a hospitality model as inspiring as its students.”

Creating Career Opportunities

This partnership goes beyond food. Aramark will offer global internships and professional development for students. Howard alumna Dari Ruff (Class of ’96) will serve as executive director of hospitality services. Chef Kevin Mitchell, a culinary expert, will create menus that celebrate global flavors and reflect student identity.

Supporting Howard’s Rising Reputation

Dining plays a key role in student success. Howard consistently ranks as the top HBCU in fields like business, engineering, computer science, and law, according to U.S. News & World Report. This initiative supports that academic excellence with a strong foundation in campus life.

About Aramark Collegiate Hospitality

Aramark Collegiate Hospitality supports more than 275 colleges and universities. The company blends data-driven insights with local flavor to create vibrant dining environments. Its mission focuses on student well-being, inclusivity, and professional opportunity—ensuring every meal supports campus identity and student growth.

Howard University’s football program continues to rack up preseason buzz, and this time the spotlight is shining bright on HBCU running back Eden James. A name that already carries weight in the football world. James, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Edgerrin James, was one of two Bison players named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list.

Joining defensive lineman Noah Miles as early standouts for the 2026 NFL Draft cycle. The announcement comes as Howard prepares to open its 2025 season in a high-profile Orange Blossom Classic matchup against Florida A&M on Aug. 30.

Eden James: Making His Own Name at Howard

Since stepping on campus in 2022, Eden James has steadily carved out a role in Howard’s offense. He has shown flashes of the vision, balance, and patience that made his father a household name in the NFL. Last season, the junior appeared in all 12 games, racking up 570 yards of total offense (422 rushing, 148 receiving) with three touchdowns. His breakout moment came in the Truth & Service Classic against Hampton. He torched the Pirates for 107 yards and a score on just 14 carries.

James’ work ethic and game-breaking ability have made him one of the most intriguing backs in the MEAC heading into 2025. He earned him preseason All-MEAC First Team honors just last week. Now, with the Shrine Bowl watch list nod, his NFL aspirations are starting to take shape.

Edgerrin James: A Gold Jacket Legacy

It’s no small thing being the son of Edgerrin James—a four-time Pro Bowler, NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Hall of Fame running back who spent 11 seasons dominating with the Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals. The elder James racked up over 12,000 rushing yards and 80 total touchdowns in his career, leaving a legacy as one of the most complete backs of his generation.

But while the last name brings expectations, Edgerrin has always focused on his son’s growth, letting Eden find his own path in the game.

“It’s cool, watching him grow up right before our eyes,” Edgerrin told HBCU Gameday back in 2022. “Just a couple of months ago he was playing high school ball. And now that he’s making the transition, I think he’s adjusting pretty well.”

The decision to attend Howard University was about more than football—it was about balance and opportunity. “Howard has a reputation of its own,” Edgerrin said. “From a school standpoint, we knew it was going to be the right fit. But as far as athletics. When they got Coach Larry Scott, I see the direction they’re headed, it just only made sense to prepare to double-dip… being at one of the best schools and a football program that’s heading in the right direction.”

Eyes on 2025 and Beyond

Eden James is poised to be a key weapon in Howard University’s backfield. The Bison are looking to make noise in the MEAC title race. Their selection to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list is more than a preseason nod. It’s a sign that NFL scouts are already paying attention.

If James can build on last season’s success, don’t be surprised if his name becomes one of the hottest HBCU prospects heading into next year’s draft process. For now, though, all eyes are on Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Howard will kick off its season against Florida A&M, where James can start turning that potential into a breakout year.

Wagner, now entering his 14th NFL season, recently joined the Seattle Storm’s ownership group. The move made headlines, but the deeper story may be Wagner’s commitment to higher education—specifically, to earning a graduate degree from an HBCU.

Choosing an HBCU on Purpose

Wagner enrolled in Howard University’s online MBA program in 2024. He’s set to graduate by the end of 2025, but is ahead of schedule. He’s on pace to finish this December.

“There is a lot of excitement around having a prominent NFL player and someone who is doing great things off the field choose Howard University as his institution of choice,” said Dr. Mariko Carson, director of graduate affairs at Howard’s School of Business.

Howard is the only HBCU ranked on Bloomberg Businessweek’s list of top U.S. business schools. It offers a flexible track designed for professionals. Most complete the degree in three years, but Wagner, balancing NFL duties and ownership responsibilities, looks to complete it in two.

“Bobby is setting the standard,” Carson said. “He has made his education a real priority—and we’ve seen increased interest in our program as a result.”

More Than Just Football

Wagner’s decision to attend an HBCU wasn’t based on convenience. It was deliberate. Carl Francis of the NFL Players Association states that choice carries meaning.

“He could’ve gone to any business school,” said Francis. “But he chose an HBCU. That speaks volumes about how he views the value and mission of these institutions.”

Wagner isn’t just hitting the books. He’s been one of the Commanders’ key leaders in what has become their best season in two decades. He’s built a reputation as a savvy investor and committed community leader off the field. He serves as his own agent and has negotiated four of his NFL contracts, including a recent deal worth up to $8.5 million.

His “Inspiring Futures” initiative promotes financial literacy and youth mentorship. That work earned him the Commanders’ nomination for the 2024 NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.

Investing in Women’s Sports

Wagner’s WNBA venture brings him back to his football roots in Seattle, where he spent the majority of his career with the Seahawks. He is now a minority owner of the Seattle Storm, one of the WNBA’s most successful franchises.

“It’s an honor to join the Storm ownership group,” Wagner said. “This is about more than basketball. It’s about investing in a legacy of excellence and empowering women.”

His relationship with the Storm dates back years. “What impressed me wasn’t just what they did on the court—it was everything they did in the community,” he said.

Lisa Brummel, co-owner of the Storm, praised Wagner’s impact on and off the field.

“Bobby is a hometown hero,” Brummel said. “He shares our desire to grow the game and understands the value of investing in women’s sports.”

A Mentor in Magic

Wagner also had guidance. He leaned on NBA legend and LA Sparks co-owner Magic Johnson before making the leap.

“Magic’s helped out a lot,” Wagner said. “I ran this idea by him first. He’s done it at a high level and was a huge help.”

Following the news, Johnson posted his support on social media, reinforcing their connection and shared vision.

“I would like to congratulate our Washington Commanders star linebacker, Bobby Wagner, on joining the WNBA’s Seattle Storm ownership group,” Johnson wrote. “I am so proud of Bobby! We’ve had so many discussions on entrepreneurship and this is just the start of him building his empire!”

Wagner’s entrance into team ownership continues a trend of athletes entering business while still playing. However, few are doing it while pursuing an advanced degree, especially at an HBCU.

Why It Matters

More than 240 active and former NFL players are enrolled in programs supported by the league’s tuition benefit. But Wagner stands apart. He’s showing that education, entrepreneurship, and elite performance can coexist—and that HBCUs can play a central role in that balance.

“He’s showing that belief in HBCUs is more than symbolic,” said Francis. “If Bobby Wagner believes in HBCUs, maybe others will take a closer look too.”

Howard’s MBA program expects to see more inquiries. And Wagner’s graduation, while less visible than a Sunday highlight reel, may prove just as significant.

“We’re broadening the legacy of Howard University,” said Carson. “Bobby’s journey reflects our values—truth, service, and excellence. His presence elevates our program, and by extension, the profile of HBCUs across the board.”

Howard University, one of the nation’s most storied HBCUs, continues to build on its legacy of excellence with the addition of Montel Jones to the women’s basketball coaching staff. Jones officially joined the program as an assistant coach in June 2025, bringing a proven track record of success and leadership within HBCU athletics.

HBCU Coaching Experience Anchors Jones’ Resume

Before arriving at Howard, Jones served two impactful seasons as an assistant coach at Tuskegee University, a fellow HBCU with a rich basketball tradition. During the 2024–25 season, Jones helped guide Tuskegee to an impressive 20-10 overall record and a 14-5 mark in SIAC play, culminating in a berth in the conference championship game. His first season (2023–24) laid the foundation for success, with the team finishing 15-10 overall and 11-8 in the conference.

“I am truly honored and excited to join this winning program—one that upholds a standard of excellence both on and off the court,” said Jones. “Coach Grace and the entire staff have been incredibly helpful and welcoming throughout this transition. The team is filled with talented, high-character student-athletes who are ready to compete at a championship level. I am especially grateful to Coach Grace for offering me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of such a prestigious institution.”

Montel Jones is joining the Howard women’s basketball staff.

Deep Roots in HBCU Circles

Jones’ coaching résumé also includes leading the women’s basketball program at Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) from 2018 to 2020, another well-regarded HBCU in the CIAA. Under his leadership, the Lady Falcons improved dramatically—on the court and in the classroom. SAU won the CIAA Highest GPA Award for women’s basketball in 2018–19, and that same season the team defeated rival Shaw University on the road for the first time in over a decade.

By his second year, Jones engineered a seven-game improvement, including sweeping Shaw for the first time since the 2008–09 season. His defensive emphasis paid off, with SAU forcing 21.8 turnovers per game—ranking 16th nationally in NCAA Division II.

From Kinston to Howard University

A native of Kinston, North Carolina—a town famed for producing basketball talent—Jones began his coaching journey after a collegiate playing career at the University of Mount Olive. There, he was part of a historic team that made the school’s first-ever Elite Eight appearance in 2005 and tallied 101 wins over four years. He later earned a master’s degree from Wingate University and completed a Doctorate in Sport Management from National University in 2024.

Jones also held coaching positions on the men’s basketball staffs at Wingate and Mount Olive, where he contributed to multiple conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances. He later brought that winning mentality to HBCU programs Virginia State University (VSU) and SAU.

Howard’s Continued Investment in Excellence

The appointment of Montel Jones is the latest sign that Howard University is committed to elevating its women’s basketball program and investing in top-tier coaching talent with strong HBCU ties. His breadth of experience across multiple levels of college basketball and within the HBCU ecosystem positions him as a key figure in the Bison’s pursuit of MEAC titles and postseason success.

As Howard continues to write its next chapter in women’s hoops, the addition of Jones brings seasoned leadership and a powerful message: excellence lives at HBCUs, and Howard is at the forefront.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — When the Jordan Brand Classic returned to the nation’s capital for its 23rd anniversary, five Howard University students stepped into the spotlight—this time behind the camera.

The students—Harmony Bailey, Chase Drewery, Curtis Merritt, Faith Mulosmanaj, and Chris Nwafor—produced a compelling mini-documentary titled “Greatness in the Making.” The film, now available on the Jordan Brand’s @Jumpman23 YouTube channel, captures the full Jordan Brand Classic experience. From touring D.C.’s historic landmarks to learning about the business of sports at Howard University, the documentary offers an inside look at the weekend through the eyes of the top high school basketball stars.

This exclusive collaboration marked another milestone for Howard University’s partnership with Jordan Brand. The university became the first—and remains the only—HBCU to secure such a prestigious brand alliance, a testament to its legacy of excellence both on and off the court.

Howard University,

Shauncey Stelly, director of Global Purpose at Jordan Brand, emphasized the brand’s dedication to nurturing future leaders. “At Jordan Brand, we have an unwavering commitment to inspiring greatness, including creating opportunities both on and off the court. The work these Howard University students produced is a testament to what’s possible with access and vision.”

The students, representing diverse academic disciplines from journalism to finance, handled all aspects of production—camera work, interviews, editing, and more. Their work highlights not just the basketball talent on the court, but also the brilliance that Howard University continues to cultivate behind the scenes.

“This was such a blessing,” said Harmony Bailey, a rising senior and the in-game voice of Howard’s men’s basketball team.

“Everything about this project—from planning to execution—was a priceless experience that we all poured our hearts into.”

For Jordan Brand and Howard University, this partnership continues to create spaces where Black excellence thrives—on camera, on campus, and on the global stage.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new partnership between Howard University and Google Research aims to help artificial intelligence (AI) systems better understand the richness and complexity of African American English (AAE). The effort could significantly improve the experience of Black users interacting with voice-enabled technology, and an HBCU is leading the way.

The initiative, titled Project Elevate Black Voices, was first reported by The Dig, a multimedia platform created by Howard University to highlight campus news and stories.

A New Dataset Rooted in Community Voices

Howard and Google researchers have compiled a groundbreaking dataset of over 600 hours of recorded speech. The audio, gathered from speakers across 32 states, captures a range of African American English dialects. Though deeply rooted in American history and culture, these speech patterns are often underrepresented—or misunderstood—by current AI systems.

The goal is clear: to create automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems that work equitably for everyone.

“African American English has been at the forefront of United States culture since almost the beginning of the country,” said Dr. Gloria Washington, co-principal investigator and Howard computer science professor. “Voice assistant technology should understand different dialects of all African American English to truly serve not just African Americans, but others who speak these unique dialects.”

Tackling the Bias in Speech Tech

Automatic speech recognition tools power many devices—from smartphones to smart speakers and in-car systems. However, many Black users report changing their natural voice or code-switching to be understood.

This issue stems from a lack of training data reflecting how Black communities speak. According to researchers, many users have been conditioned to adjust their voices because speech technologies often fail to recognize AAE accurately.

“There’s a noticeable absence of natural AAE in existing speech datasets,” Washington noted. “Even when it exists, it’s hard to leverage due to code-switching and social pressures.”

Google’s Role and Commitment

Dr. Courtney Heldreth, co-principal investigator at Google Research, called the collaboration both important and personal.

“It’s our mission at Google to make technology that’s useful and accessible,” Heldreth said. “I truly believe that our work here will allow more users to express themselves authentically when using smart devices.”

Google will have access to the dataset for product improvement, but Howard University will retain full ownership and control of licensing. The HBCU will also serve as a steward of its ethical use, ensuring it benefits the communities represented.

Building Trust and Transparency

Dr. Lucretia Williams, who led community outreach for the project, emphasized the importance of trust and privacy.

“I wanted to carefully curate the community activations to be a safe and trusted space,” Williams said. “It’s not just about data. It’s about voice, identity, and accountability.”

A Blueprint for Inclusive AI

As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, this collaboration between an HBCU and a tech giant offers a model for inclusive development. By centering the voices often left out of the conversation, Howard and Google are building systems that listen—and respond—more equitably.

The third season of Starz’s critically acclaimed crime drama BMF continues to grip audiences with its fast-paced storytelling, complex characters, and compelling cultural backdrops. But this season, it’s not just the drug wars or the rise of the Flenory empire that has fans buzzing—it’s the unexpected romance between two younger characters: Werm and Nikki. Their dynamic has not only added emotional depth to the show but has also put a spotlight on two rising talents who proudly represent the legacy of their HBCU institutions.

A Risky Romance: Werm and Nikki’s Storyline

Introduced as a fresh face in Big Meech and Tee’s Detroit circle, Werm (played by Dijon S. Means) quickly drew attention for his calculated street presence and unpredictable loyalty. But it wasn’t until he locked eyes with Nikki (played by Laila D. Pruitt), the youngest Flenory sibling, that his character took a surprising turn. As Nikki begins to seek independence and push boundaries, her growing interest in Werm adds emotional and narrative weight to the season.

Their chemistry is undeniable, drawing fans into a love story that feels both sweet and dangerous. Viewers have flooded social media with reactions to the couple’s evolution—from playful flirtations to secret glances and finally a romantic bond that puts both of them at personal and familial risk.

Adding another layer of realism, the storyline touches on Nikki’s real-life connection to HBCU culture. In the show, her boyfriend has left Detroit for college at Clark Atlanta University, creating a long-distance challenge that mirrors the emotional tug-of-war between teenage love and new beginnings.

From Campus to Camera: Real-Life HBCU Influence

What makes this on-screen relationship even more meaningful is the off-screen connection both actors have to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Dijon S. Means is a 2020 graduate of Winston-Salem State University and a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. His portrayal of Werm—a young man drawn into the drug trade to support his family and fund his education—echoes a story far too familiar in underserved communities. Means’ own educational journey at an HBCU has helped ground his performance in authenticity and emotional nuance.

Meanwhile, Laila D. Pruitt, who plays Nikki, is currently enrolled at the illustrious Howard University. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Pruitt brings not only talent but lived experience as a young woman balancing education, ambition, and identity—all of which inform Nikki’s transformation from little sister to young adult seeking her own way.

Their real-life affiliations with Black Greek-letter organizations and commitment to education aren’t just fun facts—they’re part of what makes this pairing so resonant for audiences who see themselves in these stories.

The Cultural Echo of HBCU Representation

The presence of Means and Pruitt on BMF is more than a casting win; it’s a win for HBCU visibility in mainstream media. As Hollywood slowly embraces broader, more inclusive narratives, showcasing talented actors with roots in HBCUs ensures that Black excellence—especially the kind cultivated on historic campuses like WSSU and Howard—is no longer sidelined.

By weaving real-world experience into fictional roles, these two young stars are redefining what it means to portray authentic Black stories. For fans of BMF, Werm and Nikki may be just a subplot—but for HBCU communities and aspiring actors alike, they represent the future

WASHINGTON (July 1, 2025) — One of HBCU football’s longest-running rivalries is coming back to Audi Field. Howard University will host Hampton University in the fifth annual Truth and Service Classic on Saturday, September 20, with kickoff set for 4 p.m. ET. This game will highlight the excellence, pride, and passion that define Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

A Century-Old Rivalry with Modern Stakes
Known as the “Battle for the Real HU,” this rivalry began in 1908 and continues to stir debate today. Both Howard and Hampton claim the “HU” title and bring proud athletic and academic traditions to the gridiron. Hampton leads the all-time series 74-57-1 and remains undefeated in the Truth and Service Classic. The Pirates edged the Bison 27-20 last year in front of 16,813 fans.

More Than a Game
This isn’t just a football matchup—it’s a cultural celebration. Each year, the Classic brings out alumni, students, and fans to honor the legacy of HBCU football. “When Howard and Hampton take the field, it’s a showcase of tradition, pride, and purpose,” said Howard Athletic Director Kery Davis.

Hampton Athletic Director Anthony D. Henderson Sr. agreed.

“The Truth and Service Classic is one of the premier showcases of HBCU football, and the Hampton-Howard rivalry continues to be a defining moment in our season,” said Anthony D. Henderson Sr., Hampton University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “This matchup represents more than competition — it’s a celebration of tradition, excellence and the shared legacy of two historic institutions.”

Programs Built on Legacy
Howard is a founding member of both the CIAA and the MEAC. The Bison have won two Black College National Championships and claimed back-to-back MEAC titles in 2022 and 2023. They’ll open the 2025 season at Florida A&M.

Hampton, now in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), made its Division I leap in 1995. The Pirates have claimed seven Black College National Championships and begin their season against Jackson State on August 30.

Steve Settle III, a former standout at HBCU Howard University, has signed a deal with the Miami Heat following the 2025 NBA Draft. It’s reportedly an Exhibit-10 deal. The move marks a major step forward for Settle, who began his career at one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country and now has a chance to make his mark in the NBA.

Settle’s journey to the NBA began at Howard, where he redshirted his first season before emerging as one of the most versatile forwards in the MEAC. Over three seasons with the Bison, he developed into a consistent two-way contributor. In 2022–23, he helped lead Howard to both the MEAC regular season and tournament titles, averaging 11.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. His performance in the NCAA Tournament against Kansas — where he scored 13 points — showed he could compete on the national stage.

After his success at the HBCU level, Settle transferred to Temple University for his final two seasons and elevated his game. During the 2024–25 campaign, he started all 31 games for the Owls, averaging 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and shooting an impressive 41.6 percent from beyond the arc. He recorded four double-doubles and finished the season with 12 straight games of at least 11 points, capping his career with a 22-point performance in the AAC Tournament.

Howard forward Steve Settle, HBCU

Settle’s signing with the Miami Heat is a significant moment for HBCU basketball, as it continues to produce NBA-caliber talent. His progression from an HBCU program to one of the NBA’s most respected franchises demonstrates the depth of skill found across all levels of college basketball. He joins a growing list of HBCU products making their way to the professional ranks, further reinforcing the talent pipeline that HBCUs provide to the NBA.

With his length, shooting ability, and defensive versatility, Settle has the tools to carve out a role in the Heat’s system. As training camp approaches, he’ll aim to prove that his game — sharpened at Howard and Temple — belongs at the next level. His journey is not just a personal milestone but also another step forward for HBCUs on the NBA stage.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Howard University has entered a new partnership with Follett Higher Education, the largest campus retailer in North America. Beginning June 16, Follett will manage the on-campus and online bookstore operations at the HBCU. The partnership will introduce expanded services, improved affordability, and a refreshed retail experience for students, faculty, and alumni.

Focus on Affordability for HBCU Students

At the heart of the agreement is Follett Access, a program that provides students with automatic access to all required course materials—often at prices up to 80% below traditional retail. The goal: to reduce barriers to academic success by tackling textbook affordability head-on.

“This collaboration honors our legacy and improves access to affordable materials for students,” said LaNiece Tyree, Assistant Vice President for Auxiliary Enterprises at Howard University. “Follett brings a modern, student-focused approach that aligns with our values.”

Modern Retail Experience Coming to Campus

With more than 1,000 partner campuses across the U.S. and Canada, Follett brings deep expertise in academic retail. Plans include a full renovation of the Howard University Bookstore in summer 2026. The remodel will spotlight Black-owned and alumni-owned brands, offer enhanced visual merchandising, and expand access to technology, including authorized Apple products and services.

“Our aim is to build a space that reflects Bison pride and delivers on student needs,” Tyree added.

In addition to the physical store, Howard’s digital bookstore will provide 24/7 access to textbooks, apparel, and tech products. This ensures that the university’s extended community—students, alumni, and supporters—can stay connected, wherever they are.

“Our team is proud to work with Howard to create a retail environment rooted in excellence and culture,” said Emmanuel Kolady, CEO of Follett Higher Education. “We are focused on delivering the tools students need to succeed, from day one.”

Supporting HBCU Excellence

As the only HBCU ranked among the top 100 U.S. universities by U.S. News & World Report, Howard continues to invest in student success through strategic partnerships. This latest move enhances the academic support infrastructure at the HBCU, improving affordability and modernizing the student experience, all while centering on the needs of an evolving community.

In a first-of-its-kind moment for HBCU athletics, Hampton University and Howard University will bring their long-standing rivalry to a professional soccer pitch on Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. as they face off in the inaugural HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

Audi Field is no ordinary venue. It’s home to D.C. United of Major League Soccer (MLS), the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), and DC Power FC of the USL Super League. Making it one of the premier venues in American soccer. Now, for one historic afternoon, it becomes the stage for HBCU women’s soccer to shine.

A Historic First for HBCU Soccer

The rivalry between Hampton and Howard is one of the most storied in HBCU sports. From the hardwood to the gridiron, these schools have gone head-to-head for decades. The football teams already clash annually at Audi Field in the Truth and Service Classic. But this time, it’s HBCU women’s soccer taking center stage.

“This inaugural invitational reflects our commitment to growing the game and fostering equity in sports,” said Danita Johnson, President of Business Operations for D.C. United. “At Audi Field, we’re proud to support a future where young women, particularly from HBCUs, can see themselves competing and thriving at the professional level.”

This match is more than just a soccer game. It’s a cultural statement. It’s a spotlight moment for programs that deserve to be seen and celebrated.

Howard’s Championship Pedigree

The Bison had a strong 2024 season, finishing with an 11-5-5 record and capturing the Northeast Conference title. That success earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Duke in the opening round.

Still, their rise didn’t go unnoticed.

“Our women’s soccer team, fresh off a Northeast Conference championship, represents the talent, determination, and legacy that define Howard University,” said Kery Davis, Howard’s Vice President of Athletics. “This matchup is a celebration of Black excellence in collegiate athletics.”

Head coach Brent Leiba, who earned NEC Coach of the Year honors, believes the stage couldn’t be more perfect.

“Facing Hampton this August is a powerful moment for HBCU women’s soccer,” Leiba said. “These games matter, not just for the athletes on the field, but for the visibility and growth of women’s soccer across our communities—especially in communities who see themselves in our players.”

Hampton’s Moment to Rise

While Howard brings the hardware, Hampton University brings hunger and ambition. Last season, the Pirates battled Howard to a scoreless draw in Norfolk. With a solid foundation and improved roster, they’re ready to make noise in 2025.

“This is a historic moment for Hampton University women’s soccer and our entire athletics program,” said Anthony D. Henderson Sr., Hampton’s Director of Athletics. “Playing at Audi Field not only showcases the growth and potential of our student-athletes, but also reflects our commitment to providing them with elite experiences.”

“With Howard coming off a great season and us making significant strides as a program,” added Head Coach Scot Vorwold, “playing at Audi Field will be an unforgettable experience for both teams and a powerful step forward for HBCU women’s soccer.”

Building a Pathway to Pro

The match isn’t just symbolic—it’s strategic. DC Power FC, which recently wrapped its first USL Super League season, is creating a pipeline to professional soccer. The club plans to hold a joint training session with the Invitational’s winning team in Spring 2026.

Even more impactful, an upperclassman player will receive a trial opportunity to train with the team during the 2025–2026 season.

“We’re working closely with the HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational participants,” said Jordan Stuart, DC Power FC President. “We’ll also host an event highlighting women leaders who connect the HBCU and pro soccer worlds.”

Women’s Soccer and HBCUs on the Rise

The timing couldn’t be better. Women’s sports are experiencing record-breaking viewership, attendance, and investment. From World Cup excitement to sold-out stadiums, the women’s game is thriving.

Events like the HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational ensure that HBCU programs and athletes aren’t left out of this historic growth.

“We are thrilled to welcome Hampton and Howard to Audi Field for what promises to be a milestone moment for HBCU women’s soccer,” said Janine Brunson-Johnson, Senior Director of Events & Entertainment at D.C. United.

Final Whistle

Hampton vs. Howard is more than a rivalry. It’s a symbol of progress for HBCU women’s soccer. When the ball drops at Audi Field this August, it won’t just be a game—it’ll be a moment, a movement, and a message.

Howard University’s women’s track & field team continued its impressive rise on the national stage. The Bison secured two entries into the final round of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, further cementing the program’s place among elite HBCU athletic programs.

On Day Two of the competition, the Bison quartet of Kailei Collins (Houston), Marcia Sey (London, U.K.), Tiffani-Rae Pittman (Bowie, Md.), and Aiyana Gray-Williams (Winston-Salem, N.C.) kicked things off by setting a new school record in the 4×100-meter relay. Their blazing time of 43.08 seconds, while not an automatic qualifier, was fast enough to earn them a coveted spot in Saturday’s final.

Top Competition

Howard will line up against powerhouse programs like USC and South Carolina in the relay final. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, at 9:02 p.m. ET. USC posted the fastest semifinal time at 42.55. Followed closely by South Carolina (42.88), but Howard’s squad is poised to make a statement.

She’ll compete Saturday at 9:42 p.m. ET against a stacked field led by UCLA’s Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck (12.71) and Oregon’s Aaliyah McCormick (12.76).

Although junior Aniya Woodruff (Harrisburg, N.C.) narrowly missed advancing in the 400-meter hurdles by just 0.005 seconds. The NC native’s efforts were not overlooked. She earned Second Team All-American honors. She became only the second woman in Howard history to achieve All-American status in the long hurdles.

Collins also competed individually in the 100-meter dash and, despite not advancing to the final, earned an honorable mention from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), adding to Howard’s growing list of accolades.

With two entries headed to Championship Saturday in Eugene, Oregon, and multiple national honors secured. Howard University continues to elevate its profile in NCAA Division I competition. The historic performance highlights the growing strength of HBCU athletic programs and the Bison’s unrelenting drive toward national prominence.

The Howard University men’s track and field team closed its 2025 outdoor campaign Wednesday night at the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon.

Graduate student Noah Langford of Virginia Beach, Virginia, led the Bison with a standout performance in the 400-meter hurdles semifinals. Langford posted a time of 50.50 seconds, falling short of qualifying for the final round but earning Second Team All-America honors. He became the first Howard men’s long hurdler to earn All-America recognition since John Branch in 1989.

Baylor’s Nathaniel Ezekiel recorded the top 400-meter hurdles time in the semifinals with an impressive 47.86 seconds.

Howard also competed in the 4×400-meter relay, featuring Langford, sophomore Emerson McKindra of Linden, New Jersey, and freshmen Cameron Brazell of Houston and Elijah Grant of Fort Mill, South Carolina. The team clocked in at 3:08.92, missing advancement but receiving honorable mention from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Arkansas led the 4×400-meter relay semifinals with a time of 3:02.53, narrowly edging out USC, which finished in 3:02.76.

Head coach David Oliver concluded his eighth season leading the Bison. Under his guidance, Howard secured runner-up finishes during both the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Looking ahead, the Bison aim to build on this year’s momentum as they prepare for the 2025–26 campaign with eyes set on conference championships.

Amira Washington, a standout sprinter from New Jersey, has committed to joining the Howard University Bison swimming program for the 2026–27 season. Her decision strengthens the only HBCU with a Division I swim team and adds to the program’s growing national profile.

Washington is currently a senior at Red Bank Regional High School. She also trains with the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County. Her primary events include the 50 and 100 freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke. These are key sprint disciplines that align well with Howard’s competitive strengths.

At the 2025 YMCA Short Course Nationals, she set a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle. In 2024, she competed at the YMCA Long Course Nationals, recording times of 28.20 in the 50-meter free, 1:01.41 in the 100 free, and 28.77 in the 50 fly. She reached the A-finals in both the 50 fly and 50 back.

Her high school performances have also stood out. In January 2025, she won the 100 back and placed second in the 100 fly at the Shore Conference Tournament. Both races shattered her own personal best and reset school records that already had her name on them. This consistency across high-level meets makes her one of the top HBCU swim commits in her class.

Amira Washington on her commitment to Howard

“I am beyond blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Howard University! I would like to thank God along with all my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through this journey and making my dream a reality. I’d also like to thank Coach Nic for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO BISON!!!”

Washington joins a Howard program that is experiencing upward trends. At the 2025 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, the Bison women finished just 43 points behind the champions. With Washington’s best short-course times—26.51 in the 50 fly, 56.59 in the 100 fly, 24.19 in the 50 free, and 53.00 in the 100 free—she could have qualified for multiple A- and B-finals.

This commitment reflects a broader trend in collegiate athletics. More elite Black athletes of all sports are choosing HBCUs as spaces where they can thrive both athletically and culturally, experiencing the unique campus culture that these institutions offer. Coach Nic Askew continues to build a strong recruiting pipeline at Howard, and Washington’s addition is another step in that direction.

Her presence will not only enhance the visibility of HBCU swimming in the pool but also increase its visibility nationwide. As Howard aims for a conference title, Washington looks ready to make waves and represent with purpose.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been pillars of educational opportunity for Black Americans for nearly 200 years. While HBCU institutions were originally established in response to segregation and racial exclusion, they continue to play a vital role in expanding access to higher education for historically underserved populations.

According to U.S. News & World Report, the average four-year graduation rate among the 78 ranked HBCUs reporting data was 23.2% for first-time, first-year students. Among the top 20 ranked HBCUs, that number rises significantly to an average of 40%, reflecting the growing emphasis on student retention and timely degree completion.

Key Highlights from U.S. News Data

 • Spelman College in Georgia ranks No. 1 overall among HBCUs and leads the nation with a 68% four-year graduation rate, up 1% from the previous year.
 • Howard University in Washington, D.C. holds the No. 2 spot, with a four-year graduation rate of 60%, down 1% year-over-year.
 • Xavier University of Louisiana ranks third on the graduation list at 48%, followed by Fort Valley State University (44%) and Virginia Union University (41%).
 • The national average enrollment across reporting HBCUs was 2,759 undergraduates, while the top 20 schools averaged 2,954.

Despite gains, challenges remain: eight HBCUs reported four-year graduation rates below 10%. Common barriers include changes in major, financial hardship, and personal obligations—all of which can delay or prevent degree completion.

Breakdown of Institution Types

Among the top 20 institutions with the highest four-year graduation rates:

 • 5 are National Universities
 • 7 are National Liberal Arts Colleges
 • 8 are Regional Colleges or Universities

Only ranked institutions were included in this dataset. Unranked schools, which did not meet U.S. News & World Report‘s eligibility requirements, were not considered.

]]>
Saniyah King, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, did not land at Mississippi State for the next chapter of her basketball career due to a lack of success or a winning pedigree. The ex-HBCU point guard averaged 11.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and a MEAC and Bison-best 4.5 assists per game while starting in 31 of 32 games for Howard University last season. She also dished the second-most assists (145) among freshmen in the nation behind Florida Gators guard Liv McGill.

King wants to continue her basketball evolution with dreams of playing in the WNBA after college. With the departure of MSU’s guards Jerkaila Jordan and Eniya Russell to graduation, and Denim DeShields taking her talents to Mississippi (Ole Miss), the Bulldogs needed another collection of elite point guards. King is what Purcell needs while also believing the Bulldogs’ coach and his staff will help her fulfill her hoops dream.

“My main goal [for entering the transfer portal] was development,” King told HBCU Gameday. “I know [Mississippi State] is going to help me become the best version of myself.”

Things will look extremely different for King this fall. She spent her entire life in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region with her mother, Stacey Pettiford. However, Pettiford — an HBCU alum from Howard University — tried to get the 5’7” point guard to leave the DMV to explore her basketball dreams elsewhere. “I wanted her to go away,” Pettiford said. “It’s a big world out there, and she’d experienced the DMV all of her life.” King wasn’t ready to take her talents from the big city to a new hoops terrain. But now, as she transitions to Starkville, Mississippi, the sophomore floor general is ready to embrace her next chapter, one that will include some “peace and quiet.”

“I wanted to slow my life down,” King said. “I don’t know what life is like without hearing trains, ambulances, and cars constantly passing by. I wanted new scenery. That helps me feel at peace now.”

King’s choice and determination to ditch familiarity for the Magnolia State would not be possible without confidence in her dream, faith in God, and the lessons learned at “The Mecca” of HBCU culture.

How King’s work ethic steered her hoop dream

King, who at 10 years old did not have experience hooping with an elite club team, strolled into a DMV gym for a tryout with the Lady Prime AAU basketball team, coached by then-Washington D.C. street hoops legend Lonnie Harrell. Tons of budding, young female basketball players graced the court.

After a couple of drills and some intense 5-on-5 action, Harrell walked over to Pettiford and did not waste any time in his desire for King to join the team. “I remember [her tryout] like it was yesterday,” Pettiford said. “Harrell was like, ‘we need her’ and asked ‘how long had she [Saniyah] been playing?’”

King’s genesis in basketball began with playing with boys at the park during recess in elementary school and running a few houses down the street in her Bowie, Maryland, neighborhood to play pickup games during the week. “I didn’t think I was good,” King said with a laugh. Her talent reached new heights when she joined Lady Prime. That season, King and her teammates didn’t lose a game.

As her skills grew with Lady Prime, it later opened the door for success at Bishop Ireton — a private Catholic high school in Alexandria, Virginia — as well as on the AAU circuit playing for Team Durant EYBL, named after 15-time NBA All-Star and DMV native Kevin Durant. However, a “turning point” in her personal development came during the height of the coronavirus pandemic when she completed workout sessions three times per day with Joshua Morgan-Green, the founder of the Triple Threat training regimen based in Annapolis Junction, Maryland.

“I was probably there from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” King said. “When I was younger, I was always stronger and a little faster than my peers. That summer, I really got skilled. My ball handling went to a different level, I perfected my shot, and learned how to work. He [Green] changed my life.”

How HBCU prepared King for the ‘real world’

King entered the Washington, D.C.-based HBCU after excelling in the classroom as an AP scholar and becoming one of the top 15 point guards in Virginia for assists per game. She held a long lineage of Howard pride in her family. Pettiford, one of King’s 11 family members to attend HU, played a key part in her daughter’s interest in attending Howard after many years of taking King to basketball games and events on the HBCU campus.

King, who had spent all of 18 years of her life living with her mom prior to attending HU, saw Pettiford depart the DMV to move to Atlanta during her freshman year. “When I was at home with her [Pettiford] every day, I would spend most of my time in my room,” King said with a laugh. “Seeing her leave helped me mature emotionally.”

With a 10-hour trek separating the two, King began to realize the lessons Pettiford shared with her about life, time management, and avoiding worldly distractions in pursuit of her dreams, both on and off the court.

However, when she entered the gates of the renowned Main Quadrangle, walked across The Yard or stepped inside Frederick Douglas Memorial Hall and Burr Gymnasium for the first time, she quickly found out that Howard was the epitome of “Black excellence” but also a place where she had to grow up and balance a myriad of priorities as a student athlete. “I underestimated college,” King said. “Howard helped me come to that realization very fast. It wasn’t the normal college experience. … Howard really prepares you for the real world.”

While pursuing a degree in psychology, King navigated her way as the only freshman on a veteran HBCU women’s basketball program — coached by Ty Grace — that featured a combined dozen seniors and grad transfer players, including her friend and teammate, Destiny Howell, the Bison’s leading scorer in 2024.

“Saniyah is just the player you enjoy and want to play with,” Howell previously told Howard Athletics consultant Rob Knox in December. “The first thing I noticed about her is that she is not scared of work, she does not duck no smoke. …She is a good person, making it easier to be a good teammate.”

King shared similar sentiments about Howell and also credited her leadership. “Destiny [Howell] always sat and watched game film with me and offered encouraging words,” King said. “She would tell me that I’m “HER” and to walk like it.”

But with Pettiford away and a surplus of daily college life distractions around her, it forced King to find herself while remaining focused on her goals in the classroom as well as becoming the best point guard on the hardwood. King leaned into her faith in God to navigate her challenges. Each day, she logged into Instagram, swiped to her bio section and visited one of her highlights named Daily Words of Encouragement (DWOE), which listed her favorite Bible verses and quotes. One of her go-to scriptures comes from Matthew 19:26, which reads, “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’”

As her freshman season progressed, when she wasn’t in class, at practice, or lifting weights with her teammates, she watched sermons and read the Bible, drawing closer to God when she was unable to attend Sunday services at Kingdom Fellowship AME Church in Silver Springs, Maryland.

“I was in a place where I had to find and put God at the forefront of my life,” King said. “His presence in my life strengthened my mindset and my vision to conquer my goals.”

As King embraced her walk with God, she matured in the face of adversity.

King’s grit tested on the hardwood with untimely injury

King, who became a force for Howard in HBCU women’s basketball, captured Rookie of the Week honors 11 times. With three games remaining against North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, and the defending MEAC champions Norfolk State, Howard sat in second place (17-9) in the MEAC standings.

The Bison entered their clash with NCCU, winners of seven consecutive contests and 10 of their last 11 games since league play began on Jan. 4. And for King, her focus remained on finishing the season strong and getting another chance to face the Spartans. However, things took a twist for the Bison point guard. King injured her left foot in Howard’s 74-51 victory against the Eagles, sidelining her for the final games of the regular season.

She wasn’t a stranger to foot injuries. King struggled with bone bruises over the years due to the absence of an arch in her feet. But with the MEAC tournament around the corner, her shot at helping Howard dethrone the Spartans and securing an automatic bid in the women’s NCAA tournament remained in motion.

However, with an injury comes a wave of emotions and physical challenges. When she returned to the court for the league tourney — specifically in Howard’s matchup against Maryland Eastern Shore in the MEAC semifinals — King didn’t feel like herself on the court.

“I played a little scared,” King said. “I wasn’t trying to land a certain way [on my foot] and I kept thinking about that. That’s not my usual mindset.”

HU’s win set up the MEAC title against the Spartans and future 2025 WNBA signee Diamond Johnson, a player whom King respected, studied, and watched from afar throughout her college career in the Big Ten and HBCU hoops. But like the first two contests, NSU defeated Howard 68-56, ending the Bison’s NCAA tourney hopes.

“This was supposed to be the time that I shined [on the court],” King said. “It was almost like they [Spartans] had every single play we tried to run rehearsed.”

Still, the Bison received an automatic qualifying bid to the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT), defeating Siena at home in the first round before losing to Charleston in the second round. Despite the loss, King felt like she took a step forward in her progression after the injury. “My shot was falling, it was like I had woken back up,” she said.

King invests in her future, family during offseason

As King transitions to Starkville, she’s embracing the progression of her game. Her daily 7 a.m. workouts include weight lifting, watching film, listening to basketball podcasts as well as improving her technique and feel for reading ball screens and elevating her shooting percentage from beyond the arc.

“I hate waking up early,” King said. “But since the season ended, I continued that habit. … Losing in the [MEAC] tournament and heading to a new school has inspired me to work even harder this summer. I want to improve my vision to open up the floor more for my teammates.”

King will have the opportunity to upgrade those skills and more as one of the Bulldogs’ floor generals, in addition to pursuing a business degree at MSU. As she navigates her process, King is catching up on family time with her grandfather — who never missed her home games — and spending time with her four little brothers all under the age of 12. She’s also going on nail appointments, along with brunch and dinner dates with Pettiford. And when the two aren’t tasting new foods at a restaurant, King is whipping up delightful meals in the kitchen, featuring entrées like whole fish, alfredo, roasted Branzino, along with an occasional sweet potato casserole.

“She’s really a whole chef,” Pettiford said with a laugh. “Cooking in the kitchen and on the court.”

For King, Howard University and her time in HBCU basketball symbolized family on multiple fronts. While she won’t walk across The Yard every day this fall, she will take the memories of her teammates and a stronger relationship with Pettiford to Mississippi for a new beginning. “God gave me the older sisters I always wanted but I never had when he brought me to Howard,” King said. I love and will miss them all.

Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer is bringing a familiar face back to Durham: former Blue Devil Tyler Thornton will join the coaching staff as an assistant. Thornton, who played at Duke from 2010 to 2014, returns after a successful coaching stint at Howard University, an HBCU where he served under fellow Duke alum Kenneth Blakeney.

Thornton joined Howard’s men’s basketball program in 2019 and played a pivotal role in the Bison’s resurgence. During his tenure, Howard achieved back-to-back MEAC tournament championships in 2023 and 2024, marking their first NCAA tournament appearances since 1992 . In the 2022–23 season, the Bison finished with a 22–13 overall record and an 11–3 mark in conference play, clinching the MEAC regular-season title . They secured the tournament championship with a gritty 65–64 victory over Norfolk State.

Duke Basketball, Howard University, Tyler Thornton

Thornton’s impact at Howard extended beyond team achievements. In his first season, he coached Charles Williams, the MEAC’s all-time leading scorer, to All-MEAC honors. He also guided Wayne Bristol Jr. to the 2019–20 MEAC Rookie of the Year award. In the 2020–21 season, Thornton was instrumental in the recruitment and development of Makur Maker, who became the first five-star recruit to commit to an HBCU since ESPN began ranking prospects in 2007.

Thornton’s return to Duke basketball brings valuable experience from his time at an HBCU, where he contributed to significant program milestones. His coaching journey, marked by player development and championship success, positions him as a promising addition to Scheyer’s staff.

As Duke basketball continues to evolve under Scheyer’s leadership, the inclusion of coaches like Thornton, who have demonstrated success at HBCUs, underscores the program’s commitment to excellence.

Howard University is once again making waves in the sneaker world. Jordan Brand has unveiled a stunning Player Exclusive (PE) Air Jordan 4, crafted exclusively for the Bison’s athletic program. This release not only showcases the university’s rich heritage but also solidifies its status as a trailblazer among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

The Air Jordan 4 “Howard University” PE is a masterclass in design. It features a luxurious dark navy suede upper that exudes sophistication. Accents of bold red and metallic gold add a regal touch. At the same time, personalized lace dubraes engraved with “HU” and golden hangtags embossed with the university’s crest pay homage to Howard’s storied legacy. Inside the tongue, the phrase “HU YOU KNOW” is stitched in crimson, a nod to the school’s iconic chant.

This exclusive sneaker draws inspiration from the 2023 Air Jordan 4 “First Class” WNBA PE. Blending athletic performance with refined style. The design also includes a custom hangtag proudly displaying “Howard Bison” in gold lettering, further emphasizing the university’s identity.

However, this PE won’t be hitting retail shelves. In the sneaker world, a “PE” or Player Exclusive is a shoe designed specifically for a particular athlete, team, or school and not released to the general public. These shoes often feature custom colorways, logos, or design elements that reflect the athlete’s or institution’s identity.

Air Jordan 4 “Howard University” PE

In the case of the Air Jordan 4 “Howard University” PE, this means:

 • It’s designed exclusively for Howard’s athletes and staff.
 • It includes Howard-specific touches like the “HU” lace dubraes, “HU YOU KNOW” tag, and the school’s crest.
 • You won’t find it in stores—unless one ends up in a resale auction or collector’s hands.

PEs are often highly coveted due to their rarity and the prestige associated with obtaining them. In short, it’s sneaker culture’s version of VIP access.

Jordan Brand’s partnership with Howard University, established in 2022, marked a significant milestone. As the first HBCU to receive a comprehensive deal with the brand. Howard has since been graced with exclusive PEs, including luxurious renditions of the Air Jordan 6 and the Air Jordan 1. This collaboration not only elevates the HBCU athletic program but also highlights the cultural significance of HBCUs in the broader sports and fashion landscapes.

In the realm of collegiate sneakers. The Air Jordan 4 “Howard University” PE stands as a testament to the fusion of heritage, pride, and style. While most can only admire from afar, its existence reinforces the deep connection between Jordan Brand and HBCUs, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire.

The Orange Blossom Classic is getting a prime-time glow-up. First reported by HBCU Legends, the 2025 Orange Blossom Classic featuring Florida A&M (FAMU) and Howard University is shifting to a later kickoff and locking in a national stage on ESPNU.

The matchup — a 2023 Celebration Bowl rematch — will now air on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 4:00 PM EST / 3:00 PM CST, leading directly into a college football juggernaut: LSU vs. Clemson.

That’s major.

“It’s an hour later than our usual time start,” said Kendra Bulluck-Major, Executive Director of the Orange Blossom Classic, in an exclusive interview with HBCU Legends. “We’re still on linear TV, and we’ve got an hour later kick-off, we’re happy with it. The viewership is still good. I think the main thing is to have us in a time slot where we’re not competing against too many featured matchups. Coming on before LSU and Clemson is great.”

Let’s talk football

FAMU and Howard are back at it again in one of the most anticipated HBCU showdowns of the year. Their last clash came on the biggest stage — the 2023 Celebration Bowl, where FAMU ended the SWAC drought in Atlanta. Now, Howard University, led by head coach Larry Scott, is looking for revenge in a game that’s more than just a rematch.

“As a Florida native, this is a full-circle moment for me – bringing my team back to South Florida,” said Scott. “I know the special significance of the Orange Blossom Classic to HBCU football and our culture, and it’s an honor to be a part of this historic Black college football game.”

Scott didn’t stop there.

“I look at games like this as an opportunity to put our young men on a platform that not only reflects the talent and pride of HBCUs, but also allows them to see what it’s like to play on an NFL field – something that these young men will carry with them for years and years to come. This is more than a game; it’s a moment to celebrate our culture, uplift our institutions, and support our student-athletes.”

The Orange Blossom Classic isn’t just moving later — it’s moving up. With a better slot, a national ESPNU audience, and a juicy rematch on deck, this year’s OBC is set to open the HBCU football season with serious heat. And with LSU-Clemson as the nightcap? Don’t be surprised if the OBC puts up big TV viewership numbers before the primetime fireworks begin.

Howard University men’s basketball will open its 2025-26 season with a home game against the University of Missouri (Mizzou) on November 3, 2025, at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C. This marks the second straight year the Bison and Tigers, HBCU vs. SEC matchup, will face off. Mizzou claimed a 77-62 win in last year’s matchup in Columbia.

For Howard, this isn’t just another game. Led by head coach Kenneth Blakeney, the Bison finished the 2024-25 season with a 12-20 overall record and 7-7 in MEAC play. The team showed resilience, making a spirited run to the MEAC Tournament semifinals. Now, hosting Mizzou offers a chance to build momentum and prove that HBCU programs can win on a national stage.

On the other hand, Mizzou, coached by Dennis Gates, ended last season with a 22-12 overall record and a 10-8 SEC mark. They reached the NCAA Tournament but were upset in the first round by Drake. Returning players like Mark Mitchell and Anthony Robinson II, who scored 16 and 13 points against Howard last year, will make the Tigers tough competition.

This matchup reflects a broader trend. Power Five programs are scheduling more games against Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Howard University faced Kansas in the NCAA Tournament last year and showed grit despite the loss. Recent HBCU vs. SEC clashes, like Texas Southern’s upset of Florida and Norfolk State’s near-win over South Carolina, have highlighted the growing depth of HBCU programs.

HBCU Howard University SEC

Burr Gymnasium, with its 2,700-seat capacity, promises an electric atmosphere. Unlike Mizzou’s 2024-25 opener at FedExForum, which drew over 11,700 fans, Burr’s intimate setting will create a home-court edge. The energy from the HBCU fans is sure to echo through the gym with every play.

For Howard fans, this is a chance to pack the house, wear blue and white, and make some noise. For HBCU basketball, it’s a statement about earning respect and recognition.

In 2022, Janice Pettyjohn made headlines as the first woman hired full-time by the Howard University football program. Three years later, she has firmly established herself as a vital figure in the HBCU football program’s leadership. Pettyjohn now serves as Director of Player Personnel and On-Campus Recruiting. Her promotion highlights her expanding influence at Howard University, one of the most respected programs among HBCU institutions.

To understand how far she has come, it’s worth revisiting Howard’s original announcement of her hiring.

When Pettyjohn joined the Howard University football program, she had just completed college. Her development closely mirrors the Bison’s rise. Notably, she played a key role in guiding the team to MEAC championships in 2022 and 2023. In fact, her skill in recruiting and operations helped shape those winning seasons.

Coach Larry Scott praised her dedication in a previous interview. He remarked, “She kind of trailblazed the position herself with just work ethic and just making herself an asset to what we’re trying to do.”

Furthermore, Pettyjohn’s recruiting approach prioritizes talent from the DMV region—Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. As she explained, “The biggest focus is making sure that we’re recruiting at home. You want to keep the superstars at home,” she told Andscape.

Janice Pettyjohn HBCU Howard University

Moreover, her impact extends beyond logistics and recruitment. In particular, Darius Fox, a senior lineman and key figure in the team’s offensive success, said to Andscape, “She helped me focus on more than just football. Over the years, we’ve truly become a family, and she’s the top person responsible for that.” Fox, who plays a major role on the offensive line, helped power Howard’s rushing attack in their MEAC title runs.

As her profile continued to rise, the NFL recognized her growing influence. In 2025, she was selected for the NFL Women’s Forum, a program that helps women advance in football leadership roles.

Overall, Janice Pettyjohn’s journey from middle school team manager to respected leader at Howard University showcases the expanding roles of women in collegiate sports. Her leadership also illustrates how HBCUs foster inclusive environments for emerging talent.

The 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships showcased the continued rise of HBCU track excellence. Howard University claimed the women’s title, while Norfolk State University captured the men’s crown—proving both HBCU programs remain powerhouses in the MEAC.

Howard Women Run Away with MEAC Track Title

Howard’s women’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance, continuing their reign with a fourth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Bison finished with 292 points—over 100 more than their closest rival.

The HBCU program’s success was comprehensive. Howard dominated across all disciplines, collecting 14 gold medals and making 28 podium appearances, including three complete podium sweeps. From sprints to distance, every event reflected the team’s preparation and depth.

Star sprinter Kailei Collins claimed victory in the 100m dash (11.28), while teammate Kiya Lawson secured gold in the 200m (22.87) and 400m (53.75). In hurdles, Marcia Sey captured the 100m hurdles title in 12.84 seconds.

Middle-distance runner Camille Egbula earned back-to-back wins in the 800m and 1500m. Joslyn Crosby added a win in the 5,000m. Howard’s 4x100m relay squad—Collins, Sey, Tiffani-Rae Pittman, and Aiyana Gray-Williams—sealed their dominance with a 44.15-second win.

Norfolk State Track Team Secures Men’s Championship

Norfolk State’s men’s track team continued its MEAC dynasty, earning its fourth straight outdoor championship. The Spartans totalled 227 points, separating themselves from the competition.

This HBCU program excelled in both sprints and distance events. In the 10,000m, Gidion Sigei led a podium sweep with a time of 30:36.11. Norfolk State repeated the sweep in the 5,000m behind Sigei, Victor Jumo, and Lewis Too.

On the sprint side, Premier Wynn won the 400m (46.53), while Kendrick Winfield claimed the 200m (20.70) after finishing second in the 400. The Spartans capped their performance with a dominant 4x400m relay win in 3:09.34.

Howard Men Share Second in Competitive Finish

Howard University’s men’s team tied for second place with Coppin State, each scoring 111.5 points. The Bison were led by standout hurdler Noah Langford, who won the 110m hurdles (13.64) and the 400m hurdles (50.65). He later anchored the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish in 3:09.66.

Other key contributors to the HBCU program’s performance included Goba Dan-Princewill, who finished third in the 100m dash, and Chase Drewery, who earned silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.44 meters.

MEAC Track & Field Shows HBCU Growth and Depth

The 2025 MEAC Track & Field Championships reflected not only the success of Howard and Norfolk State, but also the rising strength of HBCU programs across the board. Teams like Coppin State, Morgan State, and Delaware State made their presence felt through individual standout performances.

Although the championship trophies went to two familiar programs, the overall depth and competitiveness suggest a bright future for MEAC track and field. With several HBCU athletes advancing to the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the conference is poised to make an impact at the national level.

As the outdoor track season progresses, HBCU programs in the MEAC continue to prove they belong on the national stage—with speed, strength, and strategy that match any conference in the country.

Dankwah grew up in Brampton, Ontario, a city just northwest of Toronto. After being born in Ghana, he moved to Brampton, where he discovered football. That foundation launched him on a path through prep school in the U.S., eventually leading to a breakout career at Howard.

While at Howard, Dankwah started 39 games at left tackle and earned First Team All-MEAC honors in 2022 and 2023. He helped the Bison win a share of the MEAC title in 2022, their first since 1993. In January 2024, he was invited to the NFL Combine—the first Howard player in 10 years to earn that honor.

Following the 2024 NFL Draft, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and later joined the Washington Commanders’practice squad. Although released in May 2025, he gained valuable experience and exposure at the pro level.

The Argonauts originally drafted Dankwah in the sixth round of the 2024 CFL Draft. Now, he brings elite size, Canadian pride, and HBCU toughness to their offensive front.

As Toronto prepares for CFL training camp, all eyes will be on the 6-foot-8, 353-pound lineman. His story—from Ghana to Brampton to Howard to the pros.

Howard University celebrated its 157th Commencement on Sunday with the largest graduating class in the history of the HBCU. A total of 3,167 students received degrees, marking a 13% increase from the previous year, according to The Dig, the university’s news service.

The graduates represented 44 U.S. states and 29 countries, highlighting the global reach and continued growth of Howard’s academic community.

Actor, director, and education advocate LeVar Burton delivered the keynote address, bringing a mix of nostalgia and inspiration to the ceremony. Known for his iconic roles in Roots and Reading Rainbow, Burton surprised attendees by singing the “Butterfly in the Sky” theme song from the beloved PBS series. He used the moment to remind students of their heritage and collective strength.

“Remember that you are descended from some of the most resilient souls in the history of humanity,” Burton told the graduates. “I cannot believe that I am here, at Howard University—the Mecca—to celebrate with you this most auspicious day.”

Burton described commencement as a spiritual threshold, deeply rooted in Black culture and tradition.

Commencement is a passage,” he said. “It’s a portal between all that has come before it and all that which is yet to come.”

Laurence C. Morse, chair of Howard’s Board of Trustees, echoed Burton’s reflections, encouraging graduates to consider the legacy they are joining.

“Deeply embedded into this terra firma are the footsteps of past alumni who have trod the Long Walk to end their Howard sojourn and receive their hard-earned, well-deserved Howard degree,” Morse said.

The record-setting ceremony underscored Howard University’s continued commitment to academic excellence and cultural legacy at the Washington, D.C., HBCU.

Howard University softball will be representing HBCU softball and the MEAC in the NCAA Tournament. After dominating the MEAC with a 20-1 regular season record, the Bison entered the conference tournament with one thing on their minds—revenge. That one loss came back in March at the hands of South Carolina State. On Saturday, Howard got even and left with a trophy.

The Bison took control early and never let up, cruising to a 6-1 win over South Carolina State in the MEAC Championship. The victory marked Howard’s third tournament title in program history and first since 2022.

Bison Strike Early and Set the Tone

Howard wasted no time asserting dominance. Senior Kenna Higa led off with a double, while MEAC Rookie of the Year Lauryn Jones followed with a bunt single and a stolen base. In just a few minutes, the Bison jumped to a 2-0 lead and silenced any nerves in the crowd.

Although South Carolina State’s Jamaria Charley hit a solo homer in the third to close the gap to 2-1, Howard didn’t flinch.

Howard Responds With Pressure and Poise

In the bottom of the third, Jones slid safely under the tag at home to extend the lead. Moments later, Alyssa Vasquez scored on a defensive miscue, and Merci Hart drove in another run to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Then, in the sixth inning, Higa came through again. She drilled her second RBI double of the game, allowing junior Maryn Jordan to score from first and sealing a 6-1 advantage.

Defensively, the Bison closed the door by retiring South Carolina State in order during the top of the seventh.

Standouts Shine in Championship Win

Graduate pitcher Ameenah Ballenger earned her 12th win of the season and captured Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Head Coach Tori Tyson received the Most Outstanding Coach award. Senior Mia Gonzales also landed a spot on the MEAC All-Tournament Team, joining a group that executed with grit and confidence.

HBCU reps head to Durham

With the championship win, Howard (31-18) secured an automatic berth in the 2025 NCAA Softball Tournament. The HBCU squad will head to the Durham Regional and face No. 14 seed Duke University on Friday, May 16 at noon.

The four-team regional—hosted by Duke—also includes Coastal Carolina and Georgia. The double-elimination format will determine who advances to the NCAA Super Regionals set for May 22–25.

ESPN will carry coverage from all 16 regional sites, giving fans the chance to follow the HBCU squad toward NCAA glory.

Sam Puryear wanted to create an HBCU golf power at Howard University, though there had not been a team there in decades before he was hired. His vision was to build a team to dominate the MEAC and compete on the national stage with the country’s top golf programs. With golf no longer being sponsored by the MEAC, the team had to find a conference alliance to continue to build the dormant program.

Under Puryear’s guidance, the team came back with a buzz. Armed with the support of future NBA Hall of Famer Steph Curry, the program has been invested at levels unseen in the HBCU society. Some of the top black golfers in the country descended on Washington, D.C., to be a part of the historic rebuild.

“We achieved every goal I set out to achieve at this point,” Puryear said. “I wanted people to understand that we could be competitive in a world that, you know, we weren’t accustomed to. I had a goal of not only making the NCAAs, but being competitive in the NCAA.”

While the program has been building since returning to NCAA play in the 2020-2021 season, it has been making strides to become not only the best HBCU golf program in the country but also one of the best golf programs in the country as a whole.

HBCU Howard University golf
Back to Back Champs

It all began to fruition last season as the Bison won their first-ever Northeast Conference title. They would repeat the feat last weekend as they became NEC champions for the second consecutive time. The Bison will head to the Amherst Regional to pursue the NCAA golf championship.

The Bison dramatically won this year’s title. Down seven strokes going into the final round, Howard University put together a round for the ages at the Kingsmill Resort (par-71, 6,831 yards) in Williamsburg, Va. Howard shot 8-over-par (860), finishing with a 289 (+3) on the final day.

The most significant part of coaching HU through their come-from-behind victory down the home stretch of the NEC championship came down to motivation. “ Honestly, I told the guys we just had to go out and be the best version of ourselves. I felt like the young guys played really well on the first day. But yet at the very end of the first day, we lost six shots on the last two holes. We had some self-inflicted wounds. I told the team to stay the course.”

The Bison made the All-Tournament team for their efforts in winning the NEC title. Bear Huff, Marcus Smith, Jr., Cassius Blake, and Mathis Perroni made the squad for their stellar performances in Williamsburg.

Kentucky athletics strategy builds on HBCU coach’s proposal https://hbcugameday.com/2025/05/05/kentucky-athletics-strategy-builds-on-hbcu-coachs-proposal/ https://hbcugameday.com/2025/05/05/kentucky-athletics-strategy-builds-on-hbcu-coachs-proposal/#respond Mon, 05 May 2025 18:26:10 +0000 https://hbcugameday.com/?p=143963 Howard University head coach Kenneth Blakeney had a concept not far off from what Kentucky is looking to implement.

The post Kentucky athletics strategy builds on HBCU coach’s proposal appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Kentucky is moving forward with a bold restructuring plan that mirrors — in some ways — a proposal first floated by an HBCU coach. The University of Kentucky has officially announced that it will transform its athletics department into a limited liability company (LLC), a move aimed at expanding revenue and boosting Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities.

A few months back, Howard University men’s basketball coach Kenneth Blakeney, who coaches at an HBCU, proposed selling a one-third stake in his program to private investors. While both Kentucky and the HBCU proposal by Blakeney seek to adapt to the changing economics of college sports, the scope and institutional support behind them are vastly different.

Kentucky’s newly formed Champions Blue LLC will be an affiliated corporation of the university, allowing it to pursue private-sector partnerships while keeping staff as public employees. It’s a model that positions Kentucky to better compete under new NCAA rules that could allow schools to pay athletes directly. It also provides a university-backed structure that aligns with state and federal compliance measures.

Blakeney’s plan, on the other hand, has not been adopted by the HBCU and remains a conceptual pitch. It proposed raising $100 million from private investors to fund facilities, NIL deals, and long-term program stability. While innovative, it raised questions about governance, equity ownership, and how such a model would coexist with university oversight.

The Kentucky plan represents a top-down, university-endorsed shift, while the proposal from Blakeney remains an ambitious, coach-driven concept. Both underscore the increasing pressure on athletic programs — especially those at Power Four schools and HBCUs — to modernize their financial strategies. As the NIL era and new NCAA rules continue to evolve, Kentucky’s move could set a precedent, while HBCU programs look for sustainable ways to compete in a rapidly changing landscape.

Former Morehouse College star Cedric Taylor II will begin his next chapter of HBCU basketball at Howard University this fall, he recently announced on social media.

“From Foes to Family #TheDreamFactory?,” Taylor posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Taylor’s decision comes after the ex-Tigers’ guard entered the transfer portal on March 21, following a 2024-25 season where he led Morehouse in scoring (averaged 15.6 ppg).

“I have enjoyed my time at Morehouse and it will always be a special place for me,” Taylor previously wrote in a letter on X. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank my extended family for their unwavering support and motivation, Coach Whittler for recruiting me directly from high school and all who assisted in my development on and off the court.”

DII Hoops Star

Taylor spent two seasons at Morehouse, totaling 765 points, 76 steals, 65 blocks, 116 assists, and 353 rebounds (261 of which were defensive), while shooting 42.7% from the floor across 56 games. After a promising freshman campaign, Taylor took his game to new heights as a sophomore.

In addition to serving as the Tigers’ leading scorer, Taylor led Morehouse in steals (47), blocks (37), and rebounds (202) while finishing second on the team in assists (89) through 30 games last season. He averaged double-figure point totals in 26 games as a sophomore, including an impressive performance against Howard University in a shocking HBCU hoops upset in January 2025. Taylor finished with 17 points on 6-of-13 shots, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in 40 minutes of action.

HBCU Howard University Morehouse College

Taylor played a key role in helping Morehouse College to an 18-14 overall record and a 14-7 mark in SIAC play. The Maroon Tigers secured the No. 2 seed in the SIAC East during the league’s conference tournament in March. However, Central State, the No. 3 seed in the SIAC West, eliminated Morehouse in the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament.

Taylor earned first-team All-SIAC recognition and received the Elite 16 award, the conference’s highest academic honor.

One of the brightest young stars in HBCU basketball is heading to the Big East. Blake Harper, the 6-foot-8 freshman phenom from Howard University, has officially announced his transfer to Creighton University. The former Howard standout, had previously narrowed his list of potential destinations to Creighton, LSU, Ohio State, and a possible return to his HBCU — Howard University.

Harper burst onto the scene during his freshman campaign at Howard, immediately establishing himself as one of the premier players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Averaging 18.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, Harper’s dynamic scoring ability and all-around versatility made him a matchup nightmare. His breakout season was capped by earning MEAC Player of the Year honors — a rare feat for a freshman.

Now, Harper will take his talents to Creighton, joining a program known for competing at the highest level in college basketball. His ability to score at all three levels, combined with his size and basketball IQ, should make him an immediate impact player for the Bluejays.

For Creighton, Harper represents a major addition — a player who brings not only scoring punch but also the experience of leading a team at a young age. His time at Howard showcased his leadership qualities, smooth offensive game, and tough defensive mindset.

With his combination of experience, athleticism, and hunger to prove himself, Blake Harper could quickly become a fan favorite in Omaha. As Creighton reloads for another deep postseason run, Harper’s arrival adds an exciting new dimension to the Bluejays’ roster.

Harper’s move also highlights the growing trend of HBCU standouts making an impact on larger national stages. His success at Creighton could pave the way for future players looking to make similar transitions. As he transitions to the Big East, Blake Harper will carry the pride of Howard University and HBCU basketball with him, looking to shine on an even bigger stage.

Veteran HBCU quarterback from Howard and North Carolina A&T Zach Yeager entered the transfer portal, he announced on social media.

Yeager announced on Monday on X — formerly known as Twitter — that he had officially entered the portal as a graduate transfer and thanked the Bison for his stint with the program.

“Thank you to Howard University for the experience,” he wrote.

Yeager will seek to find his third college football home in five seasons. Before last season at Howard, Yeager spent three seasons with the Aggies football program. His best campaign came in 2022 when he threw for 296 yards and completed 27-for-59 passes and tossed one touchdown and two interceptions.

HBCU Journeyman

In his first career start with NC A&T, Yeager delivered a solid performance despite the Aggies’ 28–13 loss to NCCU. He completed 23-for-48 passes for 275 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. The highlight of his game was a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jamison Warren in the first quarter, tying the game at 7–7.

In 2023, Yeager threw for 134 yards while completing 42.9% of his passes and two interceptions. As a freshman, he played in four games and amassed 57 yards while completing 9-for-15 passing attempts. In three seasons at NC A&T, Yeager also rushed for 94 yards on 32 carries.

The Minneapolis native previously credited ESPN analyst and former Howard signal caller Jay Walker for helping secure a spot in Greensboro, North Carolina. After one season at Walker’s alma mater, Yeager will seek to find a college football home where he can showcase his talent.

Howard finished the 2024 season with a record of 4-8 overall and 1-4 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Bison featured two signal-callers —Ja’Shawn Scroggins and Jaylon Tolbert — last season. Scroggins started 10 games for HU, throwing for 1,262 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions while rushing for 446 yards on 104 carries as the team’s second-leading rusher.

Blake Harper still has his HBCU in his orbit — along with a pair of Power Four schools.

The former Howard University standout, has reportedly narrowed his list of potential destinations to four: Creighton, LSU, Ohio State, and a possible return to his HBCU — Howard University. The news, confirmed by Klutch Sports, signals a major move for the freshman phenom who took college basketball by storm in 2024-25.

Harper’s transfer decision comes just weeks after he officially signed with Klutch Sports for NIL representation. The agency, known for representing stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, brings Harper into a high-powered network of opportunity. His quick alignment with Klutch—within hours of entering the transfer portal—sent a strong signal about the rising trajectory of his career and the serious interest he’s receiving from high-major programs.

Blake Harper, Howard

The 6-foot-7 guard became the first player in MEAC history to win both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors in the same season. Harper averaged 19.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, while earning MEAC Rookie of the Week 18 consecutive times. His dynamic playmaking made him a beacon of HBCU basketball excellence and a regular feature on national highlight reels.

Many HBCU fans had hoped Harper would return for a sophomore run, but his meteoric rise and growing national attention made that outcome seeming unlikely. While his entrance into the portal doesn’t officially rule out a Howard return, it is widely expected that he has played his final game in an HBCU uniform as schools like LSU and Ohio State have significant resource advantages. And while Harper has made it clear previously that money will not be THE deciding factor, it is still likely come into play.

Still, Blake Harper’s historic year at Howard shines as a testament to the talent that exists at HBCUs—and the power of platforms like Klutch Sports to elevate those athletes onto higher-paying programs.

Howard University alumna Darci Khan is making an incredible journey from HBCU athlete to future WWE Superstar. The Atlanta native is now competing under the wrestling name Masyn Holiday. She excelled as track athlete at Howard, where she became one of the best sprinters in the school’s history. Her skills on the track were undeniable, setting three school records in events like the 100m and 200m dashes. Her athletic ability was a testament to her determination, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence.

“Track has taught me one main ingredient of being good at basically any aspect of life, and that’s confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, nobody will,” she told the hilltoponline.com.

Beyond sports, Holiday was also an accomplished artist. While at Howard, she developed her creative talents, excelling in visual storytelling and design. Her art reflected her personality and perspective, proving she was more than just an athlete. This creativity would later play a role in her transition to the world of professional wrestling.

After graduating from Howard as valedictorian, Holiday set her sights on WWE, where she began building her name in the wrestling world. She made her WWE Evolve debut with a match against Brinley Reece in March, where she impressed fans and critics with her technical skill, agility, and natural charisma. Her entrance into WWE was not just about wrestling but also about proving that HBCU graduates can thrive in diverse and competitive industries.

Holiday’s journey highlights how Historically Black Colleges and Universities like Howard can nurture multi-dimensional talent. Her story has become an inspiration for many, particularly HBCU fans who see her as a representative of their community achieving success on a mainstream platform. She has shown that her background as an athlete and artist prepared her for the challenges and opportunities of professional wrestling.

Professional wrestling, particularly the WWE, has other female wrestlers who were once HBCU athletes. “Kayden Carter,” real name Allyssa Lane, won a national championship in basketball at Shaw University in 2012 before winning tag team titles in the WWE. “Michin,” real name Stephanie Hym Lee, is a Superstar on the Smackdown brand and was on a volleyball scholarship at Virginia Union University.

As Holiday continues her path in WWE, Holiday remains focused on growth and excellence. Her journey from Howard University’s track field and art studios to the wrestling ring proves that with talent and determination, the possibilities are endless.
