Delaware State football’s 26-13 HBCU showdown with Howard, on Friday night was physical and chippy HBCU game, but the defining moments came afterward in the press room. First-year head coach DeSean Jackson and his players spoke with a confidence that reflected a program transformation—from 1-9 last season to 8-3 and tied for first in the MEAC.

Next week’s home game against South Carolina State (8-3) is winner-take-all for the MEAC championship and a Celebration Bowl berth in Atlanta.

Jackson: ‘It’s a Different Era Here’

The former NFL All-Pro didn’t sugarcoat Delaware State’s performance, acknowledging the Hornets went 4-for-9 in the red zone with multiple touchdowns called back due to penalties.

“Our style of ball, we didn’t really play it today,” Jackson said. “They called back, I think, three or four touchdowns. We’re just continuously making bonehead mistakes. But we’ll get better. We got the win. That’s what matters.”

When asked how it feels to go from preseason predictions of last place to playing for a conference title, Jackson’s response was immediate.

“All along, man, I always knew this was going to be a special team,” he said. “They were hungry—every man to a man was hungry. The expectations were high here. The standard is the standard.”

Jackson addressed the “big brother” dynamic that has defined Delaware State’s recent history in the MEAC.

“A lot of these guys that’s been here, they’ve lost,” Jackson explained. “Teams we’ve played has had more success against us. They feel like they the big brothers. ‘We beat y’all and we’ve been beating y’all. So what makes you think it’s going to be different?’ It’s a new era. It’s a different era here. Our mentality is different.”

John Taylor’s Pregame Message

HBCU legend and three-time Super Bowl champion John Taylor, one of the most decorated HBCU products in NFL history“, attended his first game of the season and met with the team before kickoff.

“It’s been an honor, man, to be in his seat and have a relationship with him,” Jackson said. “He gave them some words of inspiration. Since the first game of the year, we knew it was going to be a special team. He said, ‘Y’all going to win this game and I’m going to be back next week.'”

Jackson confirmed Taylor plans to return for the South Carolina State championship game.

Wayne Favors on His Game-Sealing Pick-Six

Cornerback Wayne Favors III’s 91-yard interception return for a touchdown effectively ended Howard’s comeback hopes in the fourth quarter.

“Somebody got to make a play and that’s just what happened,” Favors said matter-of-factly. “Coach told me—I knew one. So I went, got one. It was like a three-way banjo situation. My man Sam, number nine, made the block for me.”

When asked what it was like running into the end zone: “It’s a blessing, man. Just seeing green grass.”

Players Knew Early This Team Was Different

When asked when they realized this group was special, the responses were direct.

“We won,” one player said simply. “We seen it against Delaware. Now it’s just kind of fulfilled to it.”

Quarterback Jayden Sauray added: “Since fall camp, we had our eyes on the championship. We’re just controlling what we can control and staying focused one game at a time.”

Championship Week Mindset

Jackson emphasized the challenge ahead, noting South Carolina State played Friday and will have an extra day of rest.

“Every moment counts, every minute, every second,” Jackson said. “When I said it after the game, one of our players was like, ‘So what?’ That just shows our mindset and mentality. Toughness, discipline, resilience—those are the words I presented to this team in my first meeting.”

The former Philadelphia Eagles star drew on his own NFL experience with mentors like Kobe Bryant and Allen Iverson to shape his coaching philosophy.

“For me to be an underdog and have the success I had, those were my variables,” Jackson said. “In coaching now, that’s my transition—getting my team riled up. It starts here, it starts in your heart.”

Delaware State hosts South Carolina State on Nov. 22 in a historic HBCU championship matchup, with the MEAC championship and Celebration Bowl berth on the line.

Delaware State Outlasts Morgan State 14–12 to Stay Atop the HBCU Standings

HBCU football Under the Friday-night lights at Hughes Stadium, Delaware State did just enough to keep its title hopes alive. The Hornets (7–3, 3–0) held off a furious fourth-quarter charge from Morgan State (3–7, 0–3) to remain unbeaten in conference play.

This one was less about offensive fireworks and more about grit. Both defenses combined for seven sacks and five turnovers in a game that looked—and felt—like November HBCU football.

Lightning Start, Long Night

Delaware State struck first when James Jones sprinted 68 yards to the house on just the second play from scrimmage. That burst set the tone early, but the Hornets wouldn’t find the end zone again through the air or on the ground.

They doubled the lead in the second quarter when Amori Francis recovered a fumble in the end zone, pushing the margin to 14–3. From there, the Hornets leaned on defense and special teams to survive.

Morgan State’s Missed Moment

Morgan’s comeback began with Randall Nauden’s 67-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The crowd came alive, the defense forced punts, and the Bears lined up for a potential 45-yard game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

But Alex Amaya’s kick faded left as time expired—his only miss after two earlier field goals. Morgan finished with more first downs (16–13) and total yards (285–283) but couldn’t convert when it mattered.

Defense Defines It

Delaware State’s defense was relentless, recording five sacks and ten tackles for loss. Quincy Robinson led the charge with two sacks and multiple quarterback pressures.

Kaiden Bennett completed 16-of-25 passes for 169 yards but threw two interceptions under constant pressure. Despite the offensive struggles, the Hornets controlled time of possession (31:59) and forced three turnovers to offset their own mistakes.

What It Means for HBCU Football

This win is more than just another line in the standings — it’s a milestone in Delaware State’s climb back to relevance.
The Hornets haven’t posted a winning season since 2012 under head coach Kermit Blount, when they went 6–5. Since then, the program has endured a decade of rebuilding, false starts, and coaching changes.

Now, under DeSean Jackson, Delaware State has flipped the script. At 7–3 overall and 3–0 in conference play, the Hornets have already secured their first winning season in 13 years — and guaranteed that their final game of the year will decide the MEAC championship. For a program long searching for traction, that’s validation.

Morgan State, meanwhile, continues to look snake-bitten. The Bears have played hard, defended well, and had multiple chances to win — but can’t seem to escape late-game heartbreak. Friday night’s missed field goal at the horn felt like another chapter in that story.

HBCU football delivered a gritty November chapter as DeSean Jackson and Delaware State survived a soggy fourth quarter in Baltimore, edging Morgan State 14–12 to move to 7–3 overall and 3–0 in the MEAC. The win underscores how fast this HBCU turnaround has come: Delaware State won just two games total over the previous two seasons before Jackson’s arrival, and these seven victories are the program’s most since the 2007 MEAC title run under Al Lavan.

Delaware State punched first and then held on. On the game’s second snap, James Jones ripped a 68-yard touchdown burst to stake DSU to a 7–0 lead. The defense quickly set the tone with five sacks on the night, and short-field offense made it 14–3 early in the second quarter when Amori Francis fell on a goal-line fumble in the end zone. From there the game became about field position, punting, and pressure—classic HBCU November football in tight weather—while DeSean Jackson’s defense repeatedly answered in the red zone.

Morgan State kept clawing back with Alex Amaya field goals (37 yards in the first, 19 yards late in the third) and then seized momentum when Randall Nauden sprinted 67 yards for a touchdown just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. The rain arrived and so did the nerves: Morgan’s two-point try failed, keeping DSU ahead 14–12. Delaware State leaned on Jones (13 carries, 115 yards) and the punt team to manage the clock, a smart, cold-weather approach that fits an HBCU program learning how to close games. And when Morgan threatened late, DeSean Jackson’s front made the final stands that mattered.

The stat sheet tells a story of toughness. Delaware State and Morgan State finished nearly even in total offense (283 to 285), but DSU won time of possession (31:59), posted those five sacks for 49 yards lost, and forced two fumbles—swing plays on a wet night. Kaiden Bennett (16-of-24, 169 yards) absorbed two interceptions yet kept the chains moving with timely throws to Maurice Clark and Ryan Pellum Taylor, while punter Dyson Roberts flipped the field with a 66-yard boot among his seven punts. This is the complementary style DeSean Jackson has been preaching—defense, special teams, and a strike or two from the run game—an HBCU template that travels in November.

Context magnifies the meaning. Delaware State is now 7–3 and 3–0 in league play after winning only two games combined in 2023 and 2024; the seven wins are the most since that 2007 MEAC championship season. That’s the kind of swing that changes expectations across HBCU football. Morgan’s late push ended with a 45-yard field goal try sailing wide as the clock hit 0:00, sealing the road win and another résumé line for DeSean Jackson’s first-year blueprint.

From the explosive start to the rain-soaked finish, Delaware State showed a hardened identity: run the ball, rush the passer, and win the last five minutes. In a league defined by razor-thin margins, that’s how HBCU contenders are made—one grimy, disciplined November victory at a time under DeSean Jackson.

Delaware State women’s wrestling officially entered the record books this weekend. As, the Hornets became the first HBCU women’s wrestling team to compete in a collegiate event — and their debut was more than symbolic. They left the East Stroudsburg University Open with two medals and a message that the program’s future is already bright.

Delaware State’s First-Ever Meet Ends with Two Podium Finishes

Out of eight wrestlers in action, two earned podium spots in the program’s first tournament appearance.

  • Icart Galumette, a junior transfer from Campbellsville University, claimed third place at 117 pounds.
  • Louise Juitt, a freshman from Missouri, also took third place at 145 pounds.

Their performances set an early standard for the new Hornets program — combining experience, poise, and a clear edge in competition.

Just off the podium, Chanelle Alburg, a JUCO transfer from Carl Albert State, finished fourth at 124 pounds, falling one match short of a medal.

Building a Foundation for HBCU Women’s Wrestling

The rest of Delaware State’s lineup wrestled tough, gaining valuable experience against a deep and diverse collegiate field. The Hornets showed competitive energy and composure throughout the day, traits that will anchor the team as the season unfolds.

As a result, two medalists at the ESU Open mark an impressive debut for any new program, but for Delaware State, it’s something more. It’s proof that the first HBCU women’s wrestling team can compete immediately and build toward something lasting.

What’s Next

The Hornets return to action at the Adrian College Duals in Adrian, Michigan, where they’ll face their first dual meet competition. With two medalists already on the board from their debut tournament and momentum building, Delaware State looks to continue proving that the first HBCU women’s wrestling program belongs on any mat in the country.

This weekend wasn’t just the start of a season. It was the start of a movement.

Medalists

  • Icart Galumette — 3rd place (117 lbs)
  • Louise Juitt — 3rd place (145 lbs)

Notable Finish

  • Chanelle Alburg — 4th place (124 lbs)

An interesting start to the HBCU wrestling season. The Delaware State University women’s wrestling team’s inaugural season already has its most unforgettable moment. And it didn’t happen on the mat. In the early morning hours of November 3, the Lady Hornets became real-life heroes when they stopped to rescue a woman stranded in a disabled vehicle on Interstate 95.

HBCU Athletes Answer the Call

Returning from their first-ever competition at the East Stroudsburg University Open in Pennsylvania around 2 a.m. Most of the 13 Delaware State wrestlers and Head Coach Kenya “Chris” Sloan were asleep in their 15-passenger van when Assistant Coach Brock Budesheim spotted a BMW stopped sideways across two lanes near the Del. 1 exit.

While countless motorists passed by, Budesheim made the split-second decision to stop.

“We were all asleep, and Brock could have gone past the disabled car like everyone else,” Coach Sloan was quoted on the Delaware State University Website.

Delaware State Wrestlers Provide Critical Care

The vehicle’s front end and rear window were smashed after the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel while driving home to Delaware from a New York City airport. Her car struck the median and spun across the highway.

The HBCU wrestling team sprang into action immediately. Athletic Trainer Roger Pfister, who also serves as a volunteer firefighter, joined the coaches in assessing the situation while the Delaware State wrestlers provided comfort and care.

Team Captain Sumayyah Kemp and Coach Sloan stayed with the woman, keeping her warm and calm until emergency services arrived.

“If someone had hit her car while she was in it, I don’t think she would have survived,” Coach Sloan said.

Divine Timing for Delaware State’s HBCU Heroes

The coaches believe providence played a role in their life-saving intervention. A 15-hour tournament and a failed food order forced a late-night Wawa stop. Putting them at that exact stretch of I-95 at the perfect time.

Had dinner been delivered as planned, the Delaware State HBCU team would have already passed the crash site.

“Because of that, a young woman got to go home,” Coach Sloan said.

Historic Season for Delaware State Women’s Wrestling

The heroic rescue caps a historic moment for HBCU athletics. Delaware State became the first historically Black college or university to launch a Division I women’s wrestling program, supported by a $1.25 million gift from the HBCU Wrestling Initiative.

The Lady Hornets are now competing in their inaugural 2024-25 season, making history both on and off the mat. Their performance at East Stroudsburg produced two medalists, but their most meaningful win came on a darkened stretch of I-95 where courage and compassion defined what it means to represent Delaware State University.

“The Hornets are no longer the homecoming game.” That was DeSean Jackson’s quiet declaration on Monday’s MEAC coaches teleconference — the weekly media session where league coaches preview their upcoming games. He didn’t raise his voice — he didn’t need to. At 6-3 and heading into a pivotal matchup with Morgan State, Delaware State’s belief now speaks louder than hype. The finish is now the most importan part of their HBCU season.

DeSean Jackson Brings NFL Standards to Delaware State

Jackson opened his segment with calm focus:

“We keep the main thing the main thing,” he said. “We treat every week like a championship week.”

That mindset defines the new Delaware State. The former NFL star has traded flash for foundation — attention to detail, tempo in practice, and full accountability.

When asked about growth, he didn’t mention stats.

“It’s about learning how to finish. We’re not measuring progress by moral victories anymore.”

That line landed like a locker-room standard, not a slogan.

How California Transfers Transformed Delaware State’s Culture

Jackson praised his quarterback’s toughness first: “Kaiden Bennett’s playing through pain, and he shows his grit every week.”

Beyond individual accolades, his running backs earned recognition for the work that doesn’t show up in highlights. “James Jones and Gillis run hard, protect well — that’s unselfish football.”

The culture of inclusion got special attention, too. Transfers like Bennett, defensive back Allen Smith, linebacker Quinten Johnson, and defensive back Samuel Scaife IV all came from California, and Jackson made a point about their commitment: “We got some California guys who came a long way from home, but they’re all-in now. It’s about brotherhood.”

Those aren’t throwaway comments; they’re proof that his players have absorbed his values.

Delaware State’s Championship Mindset Under DeSean Jackson

Jackson’s message hasn’t changed — but its impact has.

“Our guys understand what winning looks like,” he said. “They understand how it feels to prepare for big games.”

He reminded reporters that the Hornets’ focus isn’t on noise — it’s on discipline. “We don’t get caught up in outside talk. We just lock in and go compete.”

Discipline, swagger, and humility — all in one breath.

DeSean Jackson’s Impact on HBCU Football and the MEAC

Across the HBCU landscape, Delaware State’s transformation under DeSean Jackson feels bigger than a win-loss column. It’s attitude and identity.

“It’s bigger than me,” Jackson said. “I’m just blessed to lead these young men.”

That humility is the core of the Hornets’ new energy. The team that used to hope to win now expects to. And with the Celebration Bowl in sight, the rest of the MEAC is taking notice.

New culture. Same hunger. And for programs that used to circle Delaware State on the schedule as an easy win, a new problem in Dover.

That’s The DeSean Jackson Effect.

Just hours after DeSean Jackson led his HBCU program to a thrilling win in Philadelphia, ESPN decided to flex its next game. Delaware State’s upcoming game against Morgan State has been flexed to Friday, November 7, for a nationally televised broadcast on ESPN2. It’s a remarkable development — one that underscores the growing influence of Jackson’s brand and the excitement surrounding Delaware State’s turnaround season.

Historic turnaround for forgotten HBCU program

Under DeSean Jackson’s leadership, Delaware State now sits at 6–3, marking one of the program’s most impressive stretches in more than a decade. Those six wins match the Hornets’ highest total since 2012, when they finished 6–5 under head coach Kermit Blount. More importantly, it ensures that the Hornets will not have a losing season for the first time since that same year — a major milestone for an HBCU program that has endured years of frustration and rebuilding. DSU won just two games in the previous two seasons.

The shift to ESPN’s national schedule isn’t just a scheduling note — it’s a statement. Friday night football is prime time, and having Delaware State featured on ESPN2 represents a major leap in visibility for both the school and the broader HBCU football landscape. It’s a chance for fans nationwide to see not just the team’s success but also the energy, style, and professionalism that DeSean Jackson has brought to Dover.

Jackson’s impact has been both immediate and undeniable. The former Philadelphia Eagles star has turned Delaware State into one of the most talked-about programs in HBCU and FCS football. His charisma and national following have drawn attention from fans who might not have otherwise tuned in to a MEAC matchup, while his coaching acumen has given the Hornets a physical and confident identity on the field.

DeSean Jackson’s impact swiftly being felt

Next week’s opponent, Morgan State, enters the game winless against Division I competition this season, but Jackson has made it clear that he won’t let his team take any opponent lightly. With a victory, Delaware State would secure its first winning season since 2012 and potentially its highest win total in over a decade — achievements that seemed improbable when the season began.

For DeSean Jackson, this moment represents more than a coaching milestone; it’s proof that star power and substance can coexist in HBCU football. And thanks to ESPN, the entire nation will get to see it unfold live on Friday night.

PHILADELPHIA — Under the lights at Lincoln Financial Field — the same field where DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick once connected as Philadelphia Eagles teammates — Jackson’s Delaware State Hornets beat Norfolk State 27-20. The win was one of their biggest victories of the modern era.

The win was symbolic on multiple levels: for DeSean Jackson, it marked a statement moment in his debut season as a collegiate head coach, and for Michael Vick, it was a reminder of the rebuilding challenge ahead in his first year leading Norfolk State. It also served as a nostalgic reunion of sorts — two former Philadelphia Eagles stars now facing off on opposite sidelines in a battle that felt as much like an NFL throwback as an HBCU showcase.

Dominance in the Trenches

Jackson’s Delaware State squad improved to 6–3, tripling the Hornets’ combined win total from the previous two seasons. His team’s identity — explosive offense balanced with discipline — was on full display. Quarterback Kaiden Bennett completed 16 of 18 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Tahmir Ellis for a 24-yard score that gave Delaware State a 19–6 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The highlight, though, came moments later when James Jones broke free for a 76-yard touchdown run that sealed the game. Jones finished with 109 yards on just 10 carries, averaging nearly 11 yards per attempt. The Hornets outgained the Spartans on the ground 201–51, a testament to DeSean Jackson’s emphasis on physicality — something he often credited to his time under Andy Reid and alongside Michael Vick during their Philadelphia Eagles years.

Vick’s Aerial Attack Falls Just Short

For Michael Vick, Norfolk State’s offense showed flashes of his trademark explosiveness through the air. Quarterback Otto Kuhns threw for 311 yards and three touchdowns, including a 70-yard bomb to J.J. Evans that briefly gave the Spartans life. Evans torched the Hornet secondary with 124 receiving yards and two scores, while DreSean Kendrick added nine catches for 112 yards and another touchdown.

Despite those fireworks, Norfolk State’s struggles on the ground and a pair of costly sacks halted late drives. Vick’s team fell to 1–7, but their offensive potential — particularly the vertical passing game — evoked shades of his time running the Philadelphia Eagles playbook with Jackson as his go-to deep threat.

Philadelphia Eagles Teammates Made It Entertaining

For both men, this was a chapter in a shared story that began more than a decade ago. From linking up on NFL highlight reels in midnight green to now leading HBCU programs on the same field, DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick turned Lincoln Financial Field into a living echo of their Philadelphia Eagles past.

As the final whistle sounded, Jackson’s Hornets celebrated a milestone victory — one that not only secured a winning season but also underscored how far Delaware State football has come under its new leader. And for Vick, it was another lesson in the grind of college football — far removed from the NFL’s bright lights, but every bit as defining.

In the city where their friendship and chemistry first made headlines, DeSean Jackson got the win — and a bit of poetic symmetry — against Michael Vick at their old Philadelphia Eagles home.

The Delaware State University Hornets have kicked off MEAC play with a statement win that’s got the entire HBCU football world buzzing. After knocking off North Carolina Central, the Hornets look like serious contenders to run the table — and maybe even claim the MEAC crown in head coach DeSean Jackson’s first season.

Delaware State Takes Down a Giant

It’s only Week One of MEAC play, but Delaware State’s victory over one of the league’s toughest programs speaks volumes. North Carolina Central has been the measuring stick for MEAC dominance in recent years, and beating them usually leads to one destination — the Celebration Bowl.

Just look at history. In 2024, South Carolina State beat NCCU and went on to win the MEAC. In 2023, Howard University did the same. Now in 2025, it might be Delaware State’s turn — and the Hornets are already showing the swagger of champions.

DeSean Jackson’s Culture Shift in Dover

This team clearly mirrors the personality of its head coach. DeSean Jackson, known for his explosive style during his NFL days, has brought a fresh, fearless energy to Dover. The Hornets now play with confidence, flash, and a chip on their shoulder — all trademarks of Jackson’s football DNA.

But this isn’t just a story about winning. It’s about the national spotlight now shining directly on Jackson, his players, and their HBCU.

ESPN First Take Brings the Spotlight to Delaware State

Recently, ESPN’s First Take took over Delaware State’s campus, showcasing just how far Jackson has elevated the program in his short time in Delaware. Under the bright lights and in front of a roaring student section, Jackson joined Stephen A. Smith and Cam Newton, introducing the “New Jac Era” Hornets to its national ESPN audience.

“I feel like I can lead men,” Jackson said on set. “I’ve got enough information in my career to help these men be successful in life. I know what it takes to make it to that next level.” “It’s been the same challenge that I’ve had my whole life. I’ve always been doubted. Who I am and how I was raised, you could put me in the ring with anybody — I’m going to come out on top.”

The energy was electric. Students waved signs, the band blared behind the set, and Stephen A. Smith called the atmosphere “ pure HBCU energy.” Delaware State’s campus became the epicenter of HBCU football that day — and the world took notice.

Full-Circle Moment: From Lincoln Financial Field to MEAC Glory

That broadcast wasn’t just good timing — it was a bit of a poetic moment. First Take aired on the eve of Delaware State’s nationally televised matchup against Michael Vick and Norfolk State, held at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Philadelphia Eagles, the franchise where Jackson became a star.

For the first-year HBCU head coach, the moment brought his story full circle. From his NFL highlights under the LINC lights to leading an HBCU team onto the same field, Jackson’s journey bridged two worlds: professional greatness and cultural purpose.

It was more than a game. It was a statement that DeSean Jackson’s influence now extends beyond the NFL — into the future of HBCU football.

The No. 1 Rushing Attack in FCS Football

On the field, the Hornets are backing up the hype. Delaware State currently ranks No. 1 in rushing offense across all of FCS football, piling up over 2,289 total yards and averaging more than 320 yards per game. That’s not just efficient — it’s dominant.

A big part of that success comes from running backs coach Clinton Portis, another former NFL star. Under his guidance, the Hornets’ backfield has become a well-oiled machine.

Graduate senior Marquis Gills leads the charge with more than 850 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, averaging over 100 yards per game. Behind him, James Jones and quarterback Kaiden Bennett add explosive depth to an already lethal ground attack.

All three players delivered clutch performances in the Hornets’ win over North Carolina Central, proving this offense can strike from anywhere.

DeSean Jackson HBCU Delaware State
Defense Wins Championships

While the offense gets headlines, Delaware State’s defense has been just as strong. The Hornets held NCCU star running back Chris Mosley, one of the top rushers in the nation, to just 83 yards — well below his average.

They also made game-changing plays, including a defensive lineman interception and a blocked field goal before halftime, which kept key points off the board. That kind of toughness and attention to detail is what championship defenses are made of.

Can Delaware State Run the Table?

It’s still early in MEAC play, but beating North Carolina Central is a major step toward a title run. We’ve seen this script before — Chennis Berry’s South Carolina State did it in 2024. Could DeSean Jackson be next to repeat history and take Delaware State to the Celebration Bowl?

If this start is any indication, the answer might be yes. Between the national TV spotlight, the swagger of his players, and a physical style that wins in November, DeSean Jackson’s rise is impossible to ignore.

Thursday night football just got a dose of brotherly love and HBCU energy.
Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson and Norfolk State’s Michael Vick — two former Eagles — meet under the lights at Lincoln Financial Field.
It’s not just a game; it’s a reunion, a showcase, and maybe the loudest Thursday night in MEAC history.

“He’s my brother. But this week… I can’t talk nothing good about him,” Jackson said during the Monday MEAC Coaches Call. “When it’s time to go to war, I don’t have friends.”

Vick laughed but matched the competitiveness.

“After the game, I’m going to give him a big hug and probably wrestle him down to the ground, win, lose or draw,” Vick said on the MEAC Call.

Delaware State: Riding High and Hungry

The Hornets (3-5, 1-1 MEAC) come in buzzing after a 35-26 win over North Carolina Central, their first conference victory of the season — and one that made the league take notice.

“We wanted to show the world what we’re capable of doing,” Jackson said on the MEAC Call. “Our guys showed how physical and hungry they can be.”

Quarterback Kaden Bennett threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns while Delaware State’s run game chewed clock like it was barbecue chicken. Jackson called the offensive approach “controlled chaos,” and he meant it — it’s loud, unpredictable, and somehow always works.

“You can’t be wrong in this offense,” Jackson explained on the MEAC Call. “Run, pass, or QB keep — we’ve got options.”

If you’re a linebacker, stretch before kickoff. You’ll be chasing ghosts.

Norfolk State: Rebuilding with Frustration

On the other sideline, Norfolk State (1-7, 0-2 MEAC) is still trying to find its footing under first-year head coach Michael Vick. The Spartans haven’t been on the right side of many games this fall, allowing more than 35 points per game while trying to build consistency on both sides of the ball.

It’s not about one bad bounce or a missed play — it’s about starting over, laying a foundation, and keeping faith through the grind.

“We’ve got to play four quarters of football,” Vick said on the MEAC Coaches Call. “The minute you take your foot off the pedal, somebody else will put theirs down.”

Vick’s challenge now is mental as much as physical — keeping his team locked in during a long season while they learn to compete for all 60 minutes.

“Every kid’s dream is to play in an NFL stadium,” he added on the MEAC Call. “Lay it all on the line.”

The Matchup

This one’s dripping with storylines:

  • Two former NFL stars now leading HBCU programs.
  • A short-week showdown with MEAC momentum on the line.
  • A prime-time slot in the heart of Philadelphia.

For Jackson, it’s about proving Delaware State isn’t just a good story — they’re a legit threat. For Vick, it’s about progress and patience as he tries to rebuild the Spartans into something that lasts.

“We don’t get caught up in records,” Jackson said during the MEAC Call. “We just want to show who we are.”

Keys to the Game

For Delaware State:

  • Keep the RPO game hot. If Bennett’s in rhythm, the Hornets hum.
  • Win time of possession. This team eats clock like it’s a pregame meal.
  • Don’t look ahead — Jackson preaches “keep the main thing the main thing.”

For Norfolk State:

  • Finish drives. Field goals won’t cut it against this DSU offense.
  • Limit big plays — easier said than done against Jackson’s “controlled chaos.”
  • Match energy for four quarters.
The Vibe in Philly

Philly’s no stranger to fireworks, and Thursday night should deliver plenty. Add in bands, fanbases, and old teammates turned rivals, and you’ve got a classic waiting to happen.

“Put me in whatever environment, I’m comfortable,” Jackson said on the MEAC Call. “I love the culture. I love our people.”

“This is a great opportunity,” Vick said on the Call. “You don’t normally get this — appreciate it and rise to the occasion.”

The Bigger Picture

No matter what the scoreboard says, this game means something.
It’s two Black head coaches — both NFL legends — leading HBCU programs on national TV, proving that growth, culture, and competition can share the same field.

Thursday night isn’t just about who wins. It’s about showing the world what HBCU football looks like when the lights come on and the stage belongs to them.

In a game that felt like an HBCU classic, DeSean Jackson and Delaware State delivered a statement victory. The Hornets knocked off defending MEAC co-champion North Carolina Central University (NCCU), 45–38, on the road at the Eagles’ homecoming. It was Delaware State’s first win in Durham since 1977 and their first MEAC victory since 2022.

Behind a balanced offense and a relentless defense, the Hornets rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to secure one of the most impressive HBCU football wins of the year.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total
Kaiden Bennett and NyGhee Lolley Lead the Charge

Quarterback Kaiden Bennett set the tone early. He threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns, confidently spreading the ball. Two of those scores went to receiver NyGhee Lolley, who exploded for 124 yards and three touchdowns on only five catches.

Marquis Gillis powered through on the ground for 108 rushing yards and two scores. His punishing style gave the Hornets a physical edge that kept drives alive and the defense off balance.

DeSean Jackson’s Swagger Shines Through

After the game, head coach DeSean Jackson praised his team’s resilience in a hostile homecoming environment.

“Man, it’s a big one. Hostile environment on the floor,” Jackson said. “They never gave up. There were a lot of ups and downs, and we just kept fighting. It was a hell of a game.”

Jackson smiled before answering when asked what he told his players after NCCU’s late comeback.

“Oh man, I’m like, ‘Damn, here we go again,’” he said. “But we stayed tight. We stayed together as one and overcame. We’ve got players who can do great things when the ball’s in their hands. Today, we fought and found a way to win.”

His mix of honesty and charisma continues to give the Hornets an identity that feels both confident and authentic.

The Hornets Control the Trenches

Delaware State’s fight showed in every stat line. The Hornets outgained the Eagles on the ground 241–105 and dominated time of possession. They also converted seven of 14 third downs, showing poise when it mattered most.

Defensively, Na’Shawn Biggs and Dasheen Jackson led a front seven that refused to let Central find rhythm late in the game. Their constant pressure forced hurried throws and stalled several key drives.

North Carolina Central Keeps It Close

Even in defeat, NCCU showed its trademark firepower. Quarterback Walker Harris passed for 354 yards and two touchdowns, keeping the Eagles in striking distance. He connected with Chance Peterson for 134 yards and Chauncey Spikes for 72 yards and a score.

Meanwhile, Chris Mosley added 83 rushing yards. Mehki Wall also electrified the home crowd with 157 kick return yards, including a 55-yard burst that helped set up a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The Eagles couldn’t overcome Delaware State’s control and composure down the stretch despite that late surge.

DeSean Jackson HBCU Delaware State MEAC
A Culture-Defining Moment for HBCU Football

This win meant more than just a boost in the standings for Coach Jackson and Delaware State. It was a statement of belief — a sign that the Hornets’ rebuild is ahead of schedule.

“We had one goal coming in here — to win a football game,” Jackson said. “They played a great game, but we finished. That’s what we’re here for. Let’s go.”

With this victory, Delaware State not only shakes up the MEAC race but also puts the rest of HBCU football on notice. Under Jackson’s leadership, the Hornets are for real — and they’re ready to make noise all November long.

Speaking during Delaware State’s postgame press conference, head coach DeSean Jackson said the 70-23 Homecoming victory over Southern Connecticut State was about focus and execution, not flash. “We haven’t won a Homecoming game since 2018,” Jackson told reporters. “We wanted to put on a show for our fans and handle distractions the right way.” The HBCU crowd at Alumni Stadium saw a dominant performance: 791 total yards, including 608 rushing, both program records.

Delaware State’s Ground Game Defines Its Identity

When asked about his offense, Jackson smiled. “We’ve proven we’re a run-first team,” he said. “Everybody in America knows we run the football pretty damn well.” The Hornets had three 100-yard rushers — James Jones (158 yds), Marquis Gillis (130), and Kobe Boykin (100) — plus big plays from Jayden Sauray (81) and Kaiden Bennett (57). By halftime, Delaware State led 29-9 and began resting its starters. Jackson confirmed that the second half was dominated by reserves who kept the momentum going. Gillis added, “We left a lot of yards on the field and still broke records.”

Accountability, Emotion, and HBCU Standards

Jackson told the media his biggest task is balancing his players’ passion with discipline. “We’ve got emotional guys,” he said. “Sometimes they lose it in. But we’re the only ones in our way.” He described implementing an NFL-style practice standard at this HBCU program. The team committed 12 penalties, including two unsportsmanlike calls, but Jackson said those are “teachable moments” that come with building a new culture.

Why the Late Touchdown?

When questioned about throwing a touchdown pass in the final two minutes, Jackson defended the decision. “Every player deserves reps,” he said. “While there’s time on the clock, we play every down like it’s our last.” He emphasized that with starters resting, the final drives were opportunities for young Hornets to gain real-game experience before conference play: “You never know when the next man has to step up.”

Looking Ahead to MEAC Play

The coach closed the HBCU postgame press conference with confidence about the road ahead. “We’re heading to North Carolina Central for their Homecoming,” Jackson said. “We’re going there to upset them. That’s our mentality.” After a bye week, Delaware State enters MEAC play 4-3, with its identity — physical, disciplined, and confident — now unmistakable.

Why It Matters

Delaware State’s record-setting Homecoming win gives DeSean Jackson’s HBCU program momentum at the perfect time. The Hornets enter MEAC play with confidence, a clear offensive identity, and a locker room that has bought into Jackson’s standard of discipline and accountability. With starters rested and young players gaining valuable reps in the second half, Delaware State looks ready to compete against the conference’s best.

Delaware State head coach DeSean Jackson isn’t talking about quick turnarounds — he’s defining a standard. Speaking on the MEAC Weekly Football Coaches Call, Jackson said the Hornets are focused on building a brand that represents consistency, discipline, and pride across the HBCU landscape.

“We’re building something that will last,” Jackson said. “It’s not just about wins. It’s about who we are every play.”

Building a Brand, Not Just a Team

For Jackson, Delaware State’s foundation begins with identity. Every meeting, drill, and rep connects back to accountability and toughness.

“This is about more than football,” Jackson said. “When you see Delaware State on the field, you should feel that brand — disciplined, tough, and detailed.”

That approach mirrors the heartbeat of many HBCU programs — culture as currency, and pride as the ultimate equalizer. Jackson’s blueprint places character and mindset at the center of the Hornets’ rise.

Four Quarters, One Standard

DeSean Jackson knows Delaware State has shown flashes of potential but admits the next step is sustaining that level from kickoff to the final whistle.

“We’ve started fast in a few, but we’ve got to sustain that same standard for four quarters,” he said. “Our mentality has to match our energy.”

Execution and consistency, he added, are what separate a rebuild from a breakthrough. The Hornets’ focus now is less about the scoreboard and more about matching effort with discipline in every phase.

Physical Football Is Our Identity

Delaware State’s brand begins with toughness — not just talk, but technique. Jackson described his team’s progress as physical but clean, emphasizing smarter aggression and fewer self-inflicted mistakes.

“We’re cutting penalties, we’re tackling better, and we’re finishing plays,” he said. “That’s what Hornet football should look like.”

It’s a message that plays well in HBCU football, where physicality, pride, and community identity are often inseparable.

We Don’t Break, We Battle

Through a demanding non-conference slate, Jackson said he’s proud of the Hornets’ resolve.

“We’ve weathered storms, fought through tight games, and never broke,” he said. “That’s who we are.”

His tone reflected a coach invested in process over panic. Delaware State’s first-year leader is building a program measured not just by wins but by growth, trust, and the ability to fight every snap.

As the Hornets enter MEAC play, Jackson’s message remains clear: Play disciplined, play physical, and keep building the brand.

HBCU program Delaware State went toe-to-toe with No. 12 Monmouth before falling 49–38 on the road at Kessler Stadium. Under head coach DeSean Jackson, the Hornets (3-3) showed they can compete with top-tier FCS teams.

Delaware State finished with 393 total yards, including 281 on the ground, in one of its most complete offensive performances this season. The Hornets matched Monmouth’s physicality and tempo through three quarters but faded late as the Hawks pulled away.

Ground Game Sets the Tone

The Hornets’ offense ran behind a dominant line and a rotation of backs who punished Monmouth’s front seven. Senior Marquis Gillis exploded for 132 yards on 15 carries (8.8 avg), including a 73-yard burst that set up one of Delaware State’s five rushing touchdowns.

Running back James Jones added three scores, while quarterback Kaiden Bennett and kicker Patrick Fisher-Butler each contributed a touchdown or field goal. In total, Delaware State averaged 6.1 yards per carry and scored on all six red-zone trips. That efficiency reflects Jackson’s renewed offensive identity for the Hornets.

High-Powered Monmouth Offense Survives the Scare

Monmouth (4-1) entered with one of the FCS’s most productive offenses, and it showed why. Quarterback Derek Robertson threw for 351 yards and four touchdowns, while running back Rodney Nelson delivered a career day with 203 rushing yards and two scores.

The Hawks punted only once all game. They converted two of three fourth downs and 10 of 14 third downs, which kept Delaware State’s defense on the field for almost 31 minutes. Even so, the Hornets forced several key stops and limited Monmouth to three touchdowns on four red-zone trips.

Safety Anthony Hebert led Delaware State with 11 tackles, while Brian Bates recorded 12 and Quincy Robinson added a sack.

Pride on Display

Even in defeat, Delaware State continues to build momentum under DeSean Jackson. His focus on speed, physicality, and discipline is reshaping the program’s identity. The Hornets have already matched their win total from last season and appear more balanced each week.

The performance against Monmouth — one of the FCS’s Top-15 programs — proved that Delaware State is closing the gap between HBCU contenders and nationally ranked opponents. As MEAC play gets ready to begin, the Hornets’ run-heavy attack and improving defense could make them a serious factor within HBCU football.

Turning Point and Takeaways

With the score tied 35–35 late in the third quarter, Monmouth faced a critical fourth down near midfield. Instead of punting, the Hawks converted, setting up the touchdown that gave them the lead for good. That single play shifted momentum and extended a drive that drained valuable clock.

Monmouth’s aggression told the story. The Hawks punted just once, went 2-for-3 on fourth downs, and finished 10-for-14 on third downs. Their tempo and precision turned a tight game into a track meet that produced nearly 1,000 yards of offense.

Player of the Game

Marquis Gillis, Delaware State — The senior back powered the Hornets with 132 yards on 15 carries, including a 73-yard burst that set up a touchdown. His mix of patience and strength kept drives alive and showed how far Delaware State’s run game has come under DeSean Jackson.

By the Numbers
  • 281 rushing yards for Delaware State — a season high
  • Five rushing touchdowns, all in the red zone
  • Three for three on fourth-down conversions
  • Zero turnovers combined — clean, disciplined football
  • 26 first downs for DSU to Monmouth’s 30
What It Means

For DeSean Jackson and Delaware State, this wasn’t a moral victory — it was proof of concept. The Hornets traded punches with a Top-15 FCS team and stayed within one score into the final minutes. Their balanced offense, efficient red-zone play, and fearless tempo signal that HBCU football in Dover is climbing fast.

Next up is homecoming, and if this performance is any indication, no one will want to face Delaware State soon.

The stage is set as first-year head coach DeSean Jackson and Delaware State travel north to face No. 12 Monmouth in West Long Branch, NJ. This matchup brings together one of the best rushing teams in the FCS and one of the most explosive passing attacks in the FCS. The Delaware HBCU comes in with pride and purpose, but Monmouth carries the weight of its Top 12 ranking.

Delaware State looks to control tempo

Delaware State has leaned on its powerful rushing game all season. The Hornets average more than 280 yards on the ground, led by Marquis Gillis and James Jones. Quarterback Kaiden Bennett adds another dimension, already scoring seven rushing touchdowns. If Delaware State controls the clock, it can quiet Monmouth’s home crowd and keep the game close. However, slowing down the Hawks’ fast-scoring attack will be a tall order.

Monmouth’s passing attack leads the charge

Ranked No. 12 in the FCS, Monmouth has been lighting up the scoreboard. Quarterback Derek Robertson has passed for over 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns through four games. His go-to target, Josh Derry, is averaging more than 130 receiving yards per game. For Delaware State, containing this connection is a must, as the Hornets have already allowed 11 passing touchdowns this season.

Discipline and special teams matter

Games like this often turn on details. Monmouth’s special teams average nearly 30 yards per kick return, setting up short fields. Delaware State has talent in the return game but hurts itself with penalties, averaging more than 100 yards lost per contest. In a hostile road environment, discipline will be just as important as execution.

HBCU pride fuels the Hornets

For DeSean Jackson and Delaware State, this isn’t just about another win. Beating a Top 12 team would be a signature moment for the program and a major statement in the FCS landscape. Meanwhile, Monmouth knows it cannot afford to stumble at home if it hopes to keep climbing the national polls.

DeSean Jackson and the Delaware State Hornets saw their three-game winning streak — the longest at the HBCU since 2012 — end on Saturday afternoon. They fell 35–31 to FCS independent Sacred Heart in a game defined by an early ejection, explosive plays, and a second-half stall.

Early High-Five Turns Into Game-Changing Ejection

Graduate transfer quarterback Kaiden Bennett opened the game with a statement. He ripped off a 40-yard touchdown run — his eighth rushing score this season — to give Delaware State a 14–7 lead.

What came next flipped the game. Bennett celebrated with a few fans near the end zone. Officials threw two unsportsmanlike conduct flags, including one for not handing the ball back quickly. The second flag triggered his ejection just nine minutes into the game.

DeSean Jackson and the Hornets turned to backup Jayden Sauray, and although he stepped up, the offense lost its rhythm. Penalties piled up. Delaware State drew 10 flags for 125 yards, a crushing total that stalled drives all afternoon.

Sacred Heart Flips the Script Through the Air

Sacred Heart gashed fellow HBCU Norfolk State for nearly 300 rushing yards a week earlier. Against Delaware State, they switched gears. Quarterback Jack Snyder completed 28 of 36 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns, both to Jason Palmieri.

Snyder overcame four sacks to lead the only second-half scoring drives of the game. His six-yard touchdown to Palmieri and a two-point pass to Tyler Picinic with 6:44 left gave Sacred Heart the lead for good.

Hornets Go Cold After Hot Start

Even without Bennett, Delaware State’s offense stayed hot early. Sauray went 12-for-18 for 207 yards and threw a 75-yard touchdown to Ryan Pellum-Taylor late in the second quarter. The Hornets put up 31 first-half points, their highest total since 2019.

The second half told a different story. Sacred Heart adjusted defensively, and Delaware State’s attack stalled. The Hornets failed to score over the final 30 minutes. They went 0-for-2 on fourth down and converted just 5-of-11 third downs.

Delaware State actually outgained Sacred Heart 466–456, averaging 8.8 yards per play to the Pioneers’ 5.3. Sacred Heart, however, controlled the clock from 36:40 to 23:19 and made the most of its chances.

Marquis Gillis led the Hornets with 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, including a 75-yard burst. James Jones added 97 rushing yards. Pellum-Taylor posted 85 receiving yards and a score.

For Sacred Heart, Snyder’s 298-yard passing day powered the comeback over the HBCU. Mitchell Summers added 93 receiving yards, Kevin McGuire caught 10 passes for 78 yards, and Palmieri’s two touchdowns sealed the deal.

What’s Next

The Hornets (3–2) will try to bounce back next week on the road against Monmouth, a Coastal Athletic Association opponent. Cleaning up penalties and maintaining offensive balance will be key to starting a new streak.

DeSean Jackson’s Delaware State Hornets are now 3–1, their best HBCU start since 2007, after a 39–10 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) that showcased not just rushing dominance but improved discipline.

Ground Game Defines the Identity

For the fourth straight week, Delaware State leaned on the run. The Hornets rumbled for 299 yards on 53 carries, overwhelming Saint Francis up front.
James Jones led the charge with a 90-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter, finishing with 111 yards on just seven attempts. Marquis Gillis added 70 yards, while quarterback Kaiden Bennett chipped in 47 yards and capped the night with a one-yard touchdown.

It’s no fluke. Delaware State entered the weekend leading the entire FCS in rushing offense, and Saturday’s effort reinforced that reputation.

Defense Forces Key Mistakes

While the ground game wore down the Red Flash, the defense took over late. Christian Garrett and Lonnell McCall II both grabbed interceptions, and Cameron Wright recovered a fumble that led directly to a James Jones touchdown. Saint Francis finished 0-for-8 on third downs and was limited to just 59 rushing yards.

Discipline Shows Growth Under DeSean Jackson

The biggest change may have come in the details. After committing 16 penalties in each of their last two games, the Hornets were flagged only five times for 44 yards against Saint Francis. That improvement didn’t happen by accident.

I challenged them guys with discipline, man. And I think today they came out and showed the discipline,” DeSean Jackson said.
He Continued, “We’re trying to hone in on the little things. Because when we don’t handle the little things, the big things won’t take care of themselves.

Saint Francis, meanwhile, hurt itself with 11 penalties for 82 yards, derailing multiple scoring chances.

A Historic HBCU Start

At 3–1, Delaware State has its best opening month since 2007, the year the Hornets won the MEAC title and reached the FCS playoffs. Saturday’s victory also gave the Hornets their longest winning streak in over a decade, now three games, and their first back-to-back wins since 2022. Jackson acknowledged the importance of learning to win away from home.

We came on the road, you know, one and one on the road now. I stressed out about my team, because, you know, we got to get comfortable on the road. We got to be a road warrior,” he said.

Why It Matters in the HBCU Landscape

DeSean Jackson’s Hornets aren’t just running past opponents — they’re running into relevance. By fixing penalties, maximizing their rushing attack, and closing games with discipline, Delaware State has emerged as one of the most intriguing stories in HBCU football.

In the world of HBCU football, Delaware State has shown promise early, starting 2–1 behind a powerful rushing attack and dual-threat quarterback play. But the Hornets’ progress is clouded by discipline issues, especially motion penalties that have killed drives. Head coach DeSean Jackson has been vocal about fixing these mistakes and pushing for complimentary football on both sides of the ball. This matchup against Saint Francis offers a chance to prove they can play clean, consistent football.

Offensive Firepower meets high stakes for HBCU

Quarterback Kaiden Bennett has been the Hornets’ leader with more than 660 total yards and 8 touchdowns. Running backs Marquis Gillis and James Jones fuel a rushing game averaging 282 yards per contest. But in last year’s meeting, Saint Francis handed Delaware State a tough loss, and that memory lingers for HBCU fans who know how much a win here would mean. If the Hornets can limit penalties, their offense has the balance to overwhelm a defense giving up 262.7 rushing yards per game

Saint Francis Outlook: Struggling to Find Rhythm

The Red Flash enter 0–3, averaging just 4.3 points per game and failing to score a passing touchdown. Quarterback Nick Whitfield Jr. has been pressured heavily, with nine sacks allowed. Their run game is inefficient at 1.8 yards per carry, though Raphael Ekechi and Jahmil Perryman provide limited sparks. Defensively, Zach Bettsand Geno Calgaro anchor a front that fights hard but struggles with time of possession.

The Discipline Factor for HBCU Fans

For Delaware State fans, this game isn’t just about stats — it’s about discipline. Coach Jackson has stressed repeatedly that penalties and lapses in focus will keep Delaware State from reaching its potential. Complimentary football — where offense, defense, and special teams all click — is the standard he’s demanding. Against a struggling opponent, the Hornets have a perfect stage to show whether they’ve learned that lesson.

Delaware State notched a strong victory, rolling past DII HBCU Bowie State 36–14 in Dover. The Hornets flashed offensive firepower, with Kaiden Bennett throwing for 179 yards and two touchdowns while adding a 24-yard rushing score. Phillippe Wesley hauled in a 64-yard touchdown strike and NyGhee Lolley ripped off a 58-yard rushing TD.

But DeSean Jackson, in his third game as head coach, refused to let the scoreboard tell the full story.

“We’re not playing complementary football. We’re not playing disciplined football… we can’t continue to make those mistakes.”DeSean Jackson Press conference

The Hornets piled up 472 yards of offense yet were penalized 16 times for 153 yards. Jackson said the lack of discipline could cost them when tougher opponents arrive.

“I feel like we should have scored 50 points in the first half.”DeSean Jackson Press conference

A New Era, But Accountability Comes First

The win pushes Delaware State to 2–1, marking progress for a program Jackson promised to rebuild quickly. Fans and alumni are already calling it a “new era.” Jackson embraced that energy while making clear that results will only come if everyone raises their level.

“The new era is real. But everyone — coaches, players, fans — has to uphold the standard.”DeSean Jackson Press conference

Jackson also pointed to the atmosphere at Alumni Stadium. Official attendance was 2,205, with a strong Hornet presence. The coach, though, didn’t like the optics.

“We can’t have an opponent coming in our territory and have a better crowd than us.”DeSean Jackson Press conference

A school representative later clarified that Delaware State actually outdrew Bowie State, but the student section was moved this year to seats behind the visiting bench. That shift made the crowd appear smaller on the home side, though DSU fans turned out in greater numbers overall.

Defensive Sparks with Room to Grow

Delaware State’s defense had its moments. Jadarrius Perkins recorded a safety and a fumble recovery, while Na’Shawn Biggs added a sack. Defensive back Allen Smith broke up two passes as the Hornets forced Bowie State into long drives.

Still, Bowie State’s Micah Robinson gashed the Hornets with 92 rushing yards, including a 52-yard burst. Jackson said cleaning up mistakes — mental and emotional — is as critical as any stat.

“You got guys that are or making mistakes in the game… and as a head coach, I can’t allow that.”DeSean Jackson Press conference

Why This HBCU Game Matters

For Delaware State, the win is another step in proving Jackson’s hire was more than a headline. The Hornets showed explosive playmaking and a fan base eager for a winner. For Bowie State, the game reinforced the need for clean football in MEAC battles, with 12 penalties for 102 yards killing momentum.

Delaware State’s balance of highlight plays and harsh self-reflection is exactly the tension of a program trying to shift from surviving to contending in the HBCU football landscape.

HBCU fans get a classic regional matchup as Delaware State hosts Bowie State—a game pulsing with history, pride, and positioning. Delaware State enters looking to build momentum under new leadership, while Bowie State arrives aiming to prove last year’s result was no fluke. For HBCU die-hards in the corridor, Delaware State vs. Bowie State is more than a date on the schedule; it’s a temperature check on where these programs are headed, and it’s why Bowie State and Delaware State will be said a lot today—because this HBCU matchup matters.

Series snapshot and a quick rewind

The modern series turned up the heat in 2021, but the roots run deep. DSU’s own notes ahead of the 2021 game cite four early-era meetings: 1933 (Bowie State 26–18), 1934 (Delaware State 13–0), 1936 (Delaware State 18–9), and 1984 (Delaware State 70–8). Those results show long gaps between clashes, yet the rivalry DNA has stuck around the region.

The recent turning point

The most recent meeting swung toward Bowie State: on Sept. 2, 2023, the Bulldogs went into Dover and beat Delaware State 22–11 on Hall of Fame Weekend. That win reset the tone and gave Bowie State a fresh talking point on the recruiting trail and in living rooms across the DMV and First State.

When was Delaware State’s last win streak?

If you’re asking when Delaware State last stacked wins, the answer is October 2022. The Hornets beat Robert Morris 14–9 on Oct. 1, then handled Norfolk State 28–7 on Oct. 15—a clean two-game win streak that month. Since then, consistency has been the question, which is why this HBCU test versus Bowie State is such a big measuring stick.

What this game means for Delaware State

For Delaware State, this is a credibility builder. Win here, and the Hornets can point to tangible progress since that 2022 blip of momentum and last season’s struggles. It’s a chance to show cleaner execution, better trench play, and a defense that finishes drives. From an HBCU lens, a strong showing helps the brand in MEAC country and steadies the narrative ahead of conference play.

What this game means for Bowie State

For Bowie State, the assignment is simple: validate 2023. A second straight win over Delaware State would confirm the Bulldogs’ physical identity still travels and that their skill talent can finish red-zone chances. It also resonates on the DII-to-FCS measuring stick fans love to debate in HBCU spaces—especially when it’s Bowie State crossing into Dover with confidence.

Matchup keys to watch
  • Line of scrimmage: Can Delaware State win first down and stay ahead of the chains, or will Bowie State force third-and-long?
  • Explosives vs. explosives: Both sides need timely shots. The team that lands the cleaner chunk plays likely controls tempo.
  • Special teams & field position: In tight HBCU games like this, hidden yards flip outcomes.
Why this matters to HBCU fans

This is a recruiting map game and a bragging-rights game. Families from Baltimore to Dover will be watching which staff showcases development, composure, and late-game control. For the HBCU community, Delaware State vs. Bowie State is a litmus test for program trajectory—are the Hornets turning a corner, or do the Bulldogs own the moment?

Bottom line

History says these programs know each other; 2023 says Bowie State carries the latest punch; and 2022 reminds us Delaware State can string wins when it plays clean football. For HBCU football fans, circle it: Delaware State has a chance to reset the narrative, and Bowie State can double down on last year’s statement.

Delaware State earned its first victory under new head coach DeSean Jackson, defeating Albany 37–32 in Dover on Saturday night. The Hornets’ home opener became a marathon HBCU matchup, stretched over 7½ hours because of two lightning delays. As a result, Jackson’s first collegiate win came long after the scheduled finish, but it was worth the wait for the home fans.

Albany Leads Late, DSU Takes Risk

Albany appeared to be in control late in the fourth quarter. With 6:04 left, Delaware State attempted a fake punt on 4th-and-15 from its own 20. However, punter Dyson Roberts slipped, giving Albany excellent field position. Two plays later, Jack Shields connected with Steven Mahar Jr. for a touchdown, putting the Great Danes ahead 32–31. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the door open.

Thunderstorms Throw Game Off Rhythm

The game’s rhythm never settled. Immediately after Albany’s score, thunderstorms forced a 40-minute delay. When play resumed, Delaware State’s drive stalled near midfield. Soon after, more lightning rolled in. Consequently, the contest paused again, this time for nearly three hours.

Bennett Delivers in Instant Replay Finish

When the game finally restarted, Kaiden Bennett delivered the decisive moment. With just 34 seconds left, he broke free for a 27-yard scramble. He avoided defenders Cam Stodghill and Ron Holmes, then dove past Khian’Dre Harris at the pylon. Therefore, Delaware State secured the lead for good at 8:32 p.m. The play capped Bennett’s third rushing touchdown of the night.

Perspectives from Both Sidelines

For DeSean Jackson, the result was a milestone. It gave Delaware State its first win of the season and its first as head coach. Meanwhile, Albany coach Jared Ambrose stressed the importance of details, saying, “Win or lose, the details are not insignificant.” His words reflected a focus on improvement despite the loss.

What This Means for HBCU Football

The win is an early sign that Delaware State can finish close games under new leadership. It does not prove consistency, but it signals progress. For the HBCU community, the night highlighted its programs’ challenges and resilience. In addition, the dramatic delays and comeback created a showcase moment for the conference.

Looking Ahead

Delaware State moves to 1–1 and now turns its attention to MEAC play. Next week, the Hornets host Bowie State, giving Coach DeSean Jackson and his team a chance to prove this wasn’t a one-night story. Bennett’s spark and Weston’s touchdown showed Delaware State has playmakers who can change games. More importantly, the program now carries momentum into conference play, where every snap matters in the fight for HBCU credibility and MEAC standing.

In the past six years, all three have won titles, turning the Big Three into must-watch HBCU action.

MEAC volleyball has shifted into a new era. For much of the last decade, Howard University owned the conference. But in the past six seasons, Delaware State and Coppin State have stepped up to create a true three-team battle at the top of HBCU volleyball.

MEAC Volleyball Champions, 2019–2024

  • 2019: Howard wins the championship
  • 2020: No tournament (COVID-19)
  • 2021: Howard wins again
  • 2022: Delaware State claims first title since 1986
  • 2023: Coppin State wins first-ever championship
  • 2024: Delaware State adds a second crown in three years

Championship Tally (2019–2024)

Coppin State: 1 title (2023)

Howard: 2 titles (2019, 2021)

Delaware State: 2 titles (2022, 2024)

Howard: The Consistent Threat

Howard reached the finals three times in the past six years and won twice. The Bison remain the dynasty of MEAC volleyball, producing stars like HBCU Rya McKinnon, who continues to dominate as one of the league’s most recognizable faces. Howard’s tradition of winning ensures they always enter the season as the team to beat.

Delaware State: The Emerging Force

Delaware State reached the championship match in 2022 and 2024, and the Hornets walked away with the trophy both times. Their 2022 run ended a decades-long drought and signaled a new chapter in program history. By winning again in 2024, DSU proved it was no fluke. They are now firmly part of the championship conversation.

Coppin State: From Spoiler to Champion

Coppin State played in the MEAC finals twice during this stretch and stunned the league in 2023 with its first-ever title. The Eagles turned their spoiler reputation into legitimacy by sweeping Howard in the championship match. That win solidified Coppin as a permanent member of the conference’s elite.

Why the Big Three Rivalry Means Everything in MEAC Volleyball

The MEAC only sends one team to the NCAA Tournament each season. That means when Howard, Delaware State, and Coppin State collide, the stakes are enormous. Every matchup between them feels like postseason elimination, even in the regular season.

This three-way rivalry brings parity, unpredictability, and star power to a league that once felt predictable. For HBCU sports fans, it makes volleyball a must-watch sport alongside football and basketball. The Big Three rivalry doesn’t just decide the conference—it defines the path to March.

What’s Next

Howard enters 2025 as the preseason favorite, with Delaware State close behind and Coppin State ready to strike again. The road to the NCAA Tournament runs straight through the Big Three of MEAC volleyball, and every game promises the kind of drama fans live for.

TGames against FBS opponents give HBCU players chances to prove themselves. These matchups may not end in wins, but they create important auditions. This year, Marquis Gillis (Delaware State), Andrew Body (Alabama State), and Eric Hunter (Morgan State) each showed why those opportunities matter for athletes with professional goals.

HBCU , Delaware State
HBCU standout Marquis Gillis powers Delaware State’s run game with 123 rushing yards and a touchdown against Delaware. Photo Terrence Pitts
Marquis Gillis: Efficient Every Down

In Delaware State’s game against in-state rival University of Delaware, running back Marquis Gillis was a bright spot. He rushed for 123 yards on 17 carries and added 46 receiving yards with a touchdown. That efficiency—over seven yards per carry—stood out against an FBS defense.

Gillis was the 2022 MEAC Rookie of the Year and remains a steady producer. His ability to run and catch makes him one of the league’s most complete backs. Therefore, his success against stronger opponents adds weight to his résumé.

Andrew Body: Dual-Threat Resurgence

Quarterback Andrew Body first impressed as a freshman at Texas Southern, when he set the SWAC single-season record for total offense per game. After transferring to Alabama State, Body showed that same ability in a matchup with UAB (FBS).

He finished with 431 total yards and five touchdowns. Body threw for 312 yards and four scores on 18-of-24 passing. He also rushed for 119 yards on 16 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown run. As a result, he reminded scouts why he was once one of the SWAC’s most promising quarterbacks.

Erick Hunter
Eric Hunter: Defensive Leader Against FBS

Linebacker Eric Hunter faced South Alabama (FBS) last week and made his presence felt. He posted 10 tackles and added a sack in the second quarter. Those plays showed his ability to control the middle of the field.

Hunter has more than 200 career tackles, ranking seventh all-time in Morgan State history. In 2023, he earned First-Team All-MEAC honors after recording 75 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. Consequently, his consistency continues to draw attention.

Why These Performances Matter

For HBCU athletes, FBS matchups are more than tough games. They are stages to show they belong on a larger platform. Gillis, Body, and Hunter each proved they could perform against bigger programs. Their efforts echo the path of South Carolina State’s Decobie Durant and Shaquille Leonard, who turned similar performances into NFL draft opportunities.

Delaware State University (DSU) is mapping out an ambitious $125 million transformation of its athletic program. The effort is designed to elevate the institution into the upper echelon of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).

The plan, first reported by Katie Tabeling in the Delaware Business Times on Aug. 20, underscores a sweeping vision set by DSU President Tony Allen and Athletic Director Tony Tucker. Over the past nine months, Allen has quietly outlined a strategy to match rising enrollment and institutional growth with a parallel surge in athletic prominence.

A New Blueprint for HBCU Athletics

Delaware State University, a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member and one of only 23 NCAA Division I HBCUs, has struggled to find consistency on the football field. Despite spending $16.2 million on its football program in 2023—the most in its conference—the Hornets have suffered 22 losses over the last two seasons.

That has not deterred Allen or Tucker. Their plan includes a new field house with turf, upgrades to the football stadium, and a multi-purpose arena that would also serve as a convocation center. Allen told Delaware legislators this spring that such investments were essential to sustain DSU’s rapid expansion. Its enrollment has climbed 25% and the campus footprint has grown 41% in the past five fiscal years.

“Our future growth is clear and compelling,” Allen said during an April hearing. “World-class facilities in the center of Delaware would attract talent not only from within the state, but across the region.”

Fundraising and Coaching Star Power

To bring this vision to life, Tucker made a key hire: Temesghen Starr, DSU Athletics’ first dedicated fundraiser. “I’ve always looked at DSU as a hidden gem,” Tucker said. “The question was how to realize that potential. It starts small and builds into bigger things.”

Equally crucial is the coaching talent now on board. After a fortuitous introduction, Tucker persuaded former Philadelphia Eagles star DeSean Jackson—who retired from the NFL in 2023—to take over as DSU’s football coach. Jackson’s reputation and network have already drawn recruits from Maryland, Michigan, and Sacramento State, filling out a roster that Tucker says has created “very good problems,” such as running out of parking spots for athletes.

“He checked off a lot of boxes,” Tucker said. “The knowledge of the game, the personality, and the ability to bring attention and resources to the university.”

Building National Attention

The attention is extending beyond recruiting. DSU has lined up ESPN’s First Take with Stephen A. Smith for a live campus broadcast this season, and it is marketing high-profile matchups, including a contest against Norfolk State led by former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Tucker insists the goal is not merely to rise within the MEAC but to position Delaware State as a national contender. “We’re not looking to be just great within the MEAC,” he said. “We’re looking to be great nationally, and we have big aspirations. We’ve got the right pieces in place—now it’s about execution.”

For Delaware State, execution means turning a $125 million blueprint into reality—a bet that cutting-edge facilities, star coaches, and strategic fundraising can vault an HBCU athletics program into a new era of competitiveness and visibility.

Louise Juitt Set the Tone for Delaware State

When Delaware State made history by becoming the first HBCU to launch a Division I women’s wrestling program, it needed a cornerstone. Enter Louise Juitt, a nationally ranked wrestler from Missouri. Juitt, an Olympic hopeful and the No. 3 wrestler in the nation at 140 pounds, was the first official recruit in school history.

Her decision to sign with Delaware State was more than just a commitment—it was a statement. Juitt’s résumé includes a Missouri state record for career wins by a female wrestler and honors as the Kansas City Star’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year .

A Wave of Talent Follows Juitt

Once Juitt joined the fold, the momentum was undeniable. Coach Kenya Sloan and the Hornets staff went to work, securing commitments from a diverse group of recruits ready to make history.

  • Mariyatta Idriss — Welcomed as a versatile competitor expected to play a big role immediately
  • Milena Chavarria — A tough recruit from Huntsville with a reputation for grit.
  • Juliana Diaz — A Fargo and NAIA National Champion transfer from Orlando, Florida, hailed as a “game changer” .
  • Chanelle Alburg — Oklahoma state champion and USA Wrestling All-American, projected for the 124-pound class.
  • Kylee Gaddy — New Jersey standout known for her pin-heavy style and competitive edge at 135 pounds.
  • Christina Lisboa — A 235-pound force from Pennsauken, NJ, who racked up 21 pins in high school competition.
  • Jehieli Velez-Almodovar — Tennessee state champion at 235 pounds with a dominant 33–9 record.

Coach Sloan’s Vision for Delaware State

Head coach Kenya Sloan made it clear that Juitt’s arrival wasn’t just about wins, but about culture. “She’s the one who will set the tone for our program. Not only her wrestling, but her attitude will set the tone for what Hornet Wrestling will be,” Sloan told HBCU Gameday (HBCU Gameday).

For Sloan, the recruiting class isn’t just about building a roster—it’s about laying the foundation for Delaware State to be a trailblazer for other HBCUs.

Why This Recruiting Class Matters

In just a few months, Delaware State has built a roster that can compete on the national stage. The Hornets are proving that when an HBCU invests in women’s wrestling, top talent is ready to respond.

The impact is bigger than sports. It’s about representation, opportunity, and breaking barriers. DSU’s recruiting class signals that Delaware State isn’t just entering women’s wrestling—it’s aiming to make history.

DOVER, Del. – An HBCU leader is facing legal trouble after Delaware State University President Dr. Tony Allen was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to court records obtained by WBOC. The case places one of the most visible HBCU executives in the country under scrutiny.

Court documents show the incident occurred on July 21, with charges officially filed in Delaware’s Court of Common Pleas on August 12. Allen faces two charges: DUI alcohol and failure to remain in a single lane. At this time, authorities have not disclosed the exact location of the incident within Delaware.

Allen, who has led Delaware State since 2020, has been a prominent national figure, particularly in conversations about the role of HBCUs in higher education and civic life. He previously served as CEO of the 2021 Presidential Inaugural Committee and has been recognized for his efforts to expand Delaware State’s reach and resources.

Tony Allen

In a statement addressing the situation, a Delaware State spokesperson acknowledged the charges but declined to provide further details. “We are aware of the recent news reports involving University President Dr. Tony Allen,” the statement read. “This matter is part of an active legal process, and we will not be commenting further at this time. Our focus remains on advancing the University’s mission – delivering exceptional education, supporting our campus community, and achieving our strategic goals.”

The development comes at a time when HBCUs like Delaware State are experiencing heightened national attention and investment. For now, the university community awaits clarity on how the case will proceed and what impact, if any, it may have on Allen’s leadership role.

Ryan Pellum is heading to Delaware State, giving new head coach DeSean Jackson a major offensive addition as the HBCU prepares for its first season under the former NFL All-Pro. Pellum’s move from Oregon to Delaware State was first reported by On3 Sports and immediately adds intrigue to Jackson’s debut campaign.

This will mark Ryan Pellum’s second college stop after spending his freshman season at Oregon. The Long Beach, California, native entered the transfer portal in January. Days later, he was arrested and later pleaded no contest to aggravated assault using a semi-automatic firearm in connection with a December 25 incident in Long Beach. Two additional special allegations were dismissed as part of the plea deal.

Before his time at Oregon, Ryan Pellum was one of the most sought-after receivers in the 2024 recruiting class. He was ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 171 overall recruit nationally, while also checking in as the No. 28 wide receiver and the No. 12 overall player in California. His high school career at Millikan included more than 3,700 receiving yards, multiple 1,000-yard seasons, and honors such as the Moore League Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2023.

DeSean Jackson, Ryan Pellum

At Oregon in 2024, Ryan Pellum appeared in four games, utilizing a redshirt season. He saw limited action, playing three offensive snaps and eight on special teams, and fielded a punt in a win over Michigan.

DeSean Jackson has a lot to work with

For DeSean Jackson, landing Ryan Pellum represents a high-upside gamble. The new Delaware State coach, who built his NFL career on explosive plays, now has a young receiver with elite speed, strong route-running skills, and a proven high school production record. If Pellum can make a smooth transition and stay on the field, he could be a central figure in the Hornets’ offensive attack.

Delaware State, long searching for a breakthrough in the MEAC, will open a new era with DeSean Jackson at the helm and Ryan Pellum as one of its most intriguing newcomers. Both will be looking to prove themselves—Jackson as a first-time head coach, and Pellum as a top recruit seeking to fulfill his promise on the HBCU stage.

It started as a casual game of toss, but the internet turned it into a reunion highlight. Michael Vick, smooth in a green polo and cap, zipped short passes to DeSean Jackson outside the Philadelphia Eagles’ complex. After laughing through a few light routes, Jackson eventually traded his T-shirt for a sports coat — not for game day, but for the press conference podium. The clip felt like a throwback to their Philadelphia Eagles glory days, but this wasn’t nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake. It was a teaser for a history-making moment in HBCU football.

Old Friends, New Sidelines

Vick and Jackson haven’t shared an NFL huddle in over a decade, but now they’re teammates in a different arena: the HBCU head coaching ranks. Vick leads Norfolk State, Jackson helms Delaware State, and on October 30, their squads will meet at Lincoln Financial Field — a massive stage for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

“The Linc gets crazy already,” Jackson said. “Now you’ve got two legends. It’s going to be hype.”

For the programs, it’s exposure. For the coaches, it’s a chance to create new Philly memories from the sidelines.

From Playmakers to Mentors

Neither took the traditional route to coaching. Like Deion Sanders and Eddie George, they skipped the assistant grind, bringing NFL pedigree and presence straight to the head seat.

Michael Vick’s been quietly preparing for years, running youth camps, coaching his daughter’s flag football team, and embracing the idea of developing young talent.

“It was always in me to be with a group of young men, to develop them, see how they transition over a three-month period, a six-month period, a 12-month period,” Vick said.

DeSean Jackson admits coaching wasn’t part of the plan, but after advice from Sanders, he jumped in fully.

“Without Deion’s success, our success would never be presented to us,” Jackson said. “To have all the information and the knowledge we have, it would be selfish for us not to give back.”

Bigger Than a Scoreboard

Norfolk State hasn’t made the FCS playoffs since 1997. Delaware State is coming off a 1-11 season. The Oct. 30 game won’t fix those records overnight — but it could be the spark for recruiting, funding, and a culture shift.

The two call each other brothers. And while they’ll be on opposite sidelines, they’re aiming for the same win: pushing HBCU football to bigger stages.

“There are a lot of things we could be doing,” Vick said. “But we chose to go down this route… it will be a success.”

When Vick and Jackson share a field in Philly, history suggests something unforgettable is coming — whether it’s a deep ball or a deep impact on HBCU football.

Delaware State football has landed a significant addition at quarterback with the transfer of Kaiden Bennett, a dynamic dual-threat playmaker formerly of Sacramento State. The move marks a pivotal moment for first-year head coach DeSean Jackson as he looks to rebuild a Hornets program that hasn’t claimed a conference title since 2007.

From Breakout Star to New Beginning

Bennett’s journey through college football has been a winding one, beginning at Boise State as an early enrollee in 2019 before redshirting at Nevada that same year. He eventually found his stride at Sacramento State, where after limited action in his first two seasons, he exploded onto the national FCS scene during his junior campaign in 2023.

That year, Bennett completed 64.3% of his passes—second-best in Hornets history—while throwing for 2,192 yards and 16 touchdowns. He added another 577 yards and six scores on the ground, amassing 2,767 total yards and 22 touchdowns, both of which rank top ten in Sacramento State’s single-season record books.

He started 10 of 13 games and led the Hornets to the second round of the FCS Playoffs. In the opening-round victory over North Dakota, Bennett showcased his versatility with 207 passing yards, a passing touchdown, 126 rushing yards, and two scores on the ground. His signature moment came in a historic upset over Stanford—Sacramento State’s first-ever win against a Power Conference opponent—where he tallied 279 passing yards and a touchdown, along with 100 rushing yards and another score. That performance earned him Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Despite being limited to two starts in 2024 due to injury, Bennett leaves Sacramento State ranked 18th all-time in career passing yards (2,508) and third in completion percentage (62.5%).

A New Era Under “D-Jax”

Bennett’s arrival in Dover comes at a crucial time for Delaware State, which just lost its starting quarterback, Marqui Adams to the transfer portal on July 25. Adams, an FCS Freshman All-American in 2023, had shown flashes of brilliance with 16 touchdowns across 19 games but was sidelined by a season-ending injury midway through last year. Head coach DeSean Jackson, who was impressed by Adams’ playmaking ability during spring camp, now looks to Bennett to fill the void and elevate the Hornets’ offense.

“Marqui is a playmaker, man,” Jackson said earlier this year. “He can do some special things with his legs… he scored like a 50-yard touchdown [in the spring showcase].”

In Bennett, Jackson now inherits a proven playmaker who fits the mold. The Folsom, California native brings experience, composure, and athleticism to a team in need of leadership and offensive production. With stops at four different programs, Bennett carries a depth of perspective and maturity that could prove vital for a Delaware State squad hungry for a new identity.

The DeSean Jackson Effect

For Jackson, a former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver and standout at California, the acquisition signals the start of his program-building efforts. By landing a transfer like Bennett—who orchestrated playoff runs and engineered wins over FBS opponents—Jackson is making it clear that Delaware State intends to compete at a higher level in the FCS landscape.

Zach McKinnell of The Bluebloods, one of the premier voices in FCS football coverage, called Bennett’s addition “a major college football transfer portal decision,” highlighting his impact performance and ability to lead a program deep into the postseason.

As the Hornets prepare for a new season with new leadership, all eyes will be on Kaiden Bennett—the quarterback who’s already made history once and could do it again in HBCU football for Delaware State.

BALTIMORE, MD — DeSean Jackson has dazzled fans for years as an NFL superstar. Now, he’s looking to make his mark from the sidelines as he begins his first season leading HBCU Delaware State University. The former Pro Bowl wide receiver and first-time head coach arrived at MEAC Media Day with swagger, vision—and something to prove.

“Coach Jack in the building, 2025 MEAC Day, man. DSU Hornets, we in the building, let’s get it,” Jackson declared.

Despite being picked to finish last in the MEAC preseason poll, Jackson didn’t flinch. He made it clear that his squad is ready to compete.

“We not where we wanna be at, but we climbing,” he said. “By training camp, in our first game of the year, we gonna be ready—full force, with speed, ready to go.”

NFL Teammates Turned HBCU Rivals

Jackson’s hiring has brought a wave of attention to the program. A big reason? His former NFL teammate Michael Vick is now the head coach at Norfolk State. The two will square off on October 30 at Lincoln Financial Field—the same stadium where they both played as Philadelphia Eagles.

“When I sat in this seat as head coach, I knew we was playing Michael Vick—it was only right for us to get that game at The Linc,” Jackson said. “It’s a dream come true.”

He added that he personally pushed to move the game to the NFL venue, and Vick quickly bought in.

Changing the Culture at DSU

Jackson hasn’t avoided the hard truths about DSU’s past. The program has won just two games over the past two seasons. He’s using those struggles to fuel a culture shift.

“They lost six games in the fourth quarter last year,” he said. “That’s a mentality thing, a fatigue thing, and we’ve been addressing it since day one.”

His message is clear: the Hornets are rebuilding brick by brick—and not backing down from anyone.

Two veterans who remained through the transition—linebacker Brian Bates and running back Marquis Gillis—were chosen to represent the team at media day. Both praised Jackson’s leadership and energy.

“It’s amazing to have another coach come in and rebrand the whole thing,” Bates said. “Practices are fun. We get after it every single day.”

Gillis added, “It’s a culture change. You’ve got somebody of that stature giving back to an HBCU. It’s not just Coach Jackson—it’s the whole staff and the energy they bring.”

No Apologies, No Suit, No Prisoners

Jackson brought that same authenticity to media day, showing up in a team polo rather than the traditional suit. At 38, he’s the youngest coach in the MEAC and the most relatable to his players—some of whom grew up watching him.

He knows the league is full of seasoned coaches, but he and Vick aren’t intimidated.

“Some of these guys, their track record—it’s long. But for me and Vick, it’s our first year coaching. We got a lot to learn, but we’re confident and competitive,” he said. “We don’t care how long you’ve been coaching. When it’s time to line up—put your best up, I’ll put mine up, and let’s get it on.”

“After the game, we shake hands and show respect. But during those three hours? It’s gonna get real. We take no prisoners.”

DeSean Jackson has officially put the HBCU world—and the MEAC—on notice. It’s a new day at Delaware State.

Delaware State is doubling down on its vision for HBCU basketball success. Head men’s basketball coach Stan Waterman has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, according to the university’s official release. The move signals Delaware State’s belief that Waterman is the right leader to elevate the program and build lasting success in the HBCU basketball landscape.

Leadership Stability at Delaware State

Waterman took over the Hornets in 2021 and has been focused on changing the program’s culture. He’s helped the Hornets become more competitive while also prioritizing academics and player development. “I am excited and honored to continue leading the men’s basketball program at Delaware State University,” Waterman said in the press release. “We’ve made significant progress, and I’m committed to building a championship culture our students, alumni, and fans can be proud of.”

From High School Legend to HBCU Team Builder

Before his college debut, Waterman led Sanford School in Delaware to eight state championships. That success has translated into a clear vision at Delaware State. Athletic Director Tony Tucker praised Waterman’s impact. “Coach Waterman is a tremendous leader and mentor,” Tucker said in the release. “He exemplifies what it means to be a Hornet and a champion in the HBCU community.”

Delaware State Basketball’s Strategic Direction

The extension comes at a critical time. HBCU basketball programs are investing in coaches who bring both experience and community connection. Waterman fits that mold. His presence brings stability and signals that Delaware State is serious about winning in the MEAC and on the national stage. After winning just two games in his first season, Waterman has steadily improved the program’s competitiveness, more than tripling the team’s win total by year three and earning respect across the MEAC.

Momentum Builds for 2025–26 HBCU Season

The Hornets made strides in the 2024–25 season despite having a rebuilding roster. Stan Waterman’s defensive focus and player-first culture are beginning to show results. With the contract now extended, expectations for 2025–26 will only grow. The Hornets may be one of the HBCU teams to watch this season.

Delaware State University (DSU) is entering a new era of growth and excitement. With fall football around the corner and the presence of former NFL star DeSean Jackson, momentum is building at Alumni Stadium. The HBCU is investing in a major facilities upgrade, hiring a star head coach, and transforming its athletic future.

DSU Launches Athletics Transformation Project

In 2024, DSU introduced the Athletics Transformation Project. The goal is to improve athletic facilities and student-athlete experiences. A big part of that effort is the construction of a new 70,000-square-foot field house.

On July 1, Delaware’s state bond bill included $20 million in funding for the project.

“It’s going to inject a lot of energy and goodwill into our campus,” DSU Athletic Director Tony Tucker told Adam Denn of the Delaware News Journal.

DeSean Jackson Energizes Hornets Football

DSU hired former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson as head football coach in December 2024. His arrival created instant buzz.

“He’s brought a lot of energy to the football program, as well as the university,” Tucker said.

Tucker was promoted to athletic director just before Jackson’s hiring. He calls this moment a “perfect storm” of progress and opportunity.

“This is the perfect time for Delaware State athletics,” he said. “We can reach heights never seen before by the university,” he said to Delaware Online.

DeSean Jackson Delaware State HBCU Football

What Will the DSU Field House Include?

The new DSU field house will sit next to Alumni Stadium. The design includes:

  • A 50-yard indoor turf field
  • Team meeting rooms
  • Player lounge areas
  • Updated locker rooms for all sports

Jackson believes the facility will improve recruiting immediately.

“Coming from a big school like Cal and seeing them transform, I think it’s really gonna help,” he said. “We’ve lost talent to schools like Norfolk and Howard. Having better facilities will make a huge difference.”

Tucker said the facility will also serve students beyond athletics.

“Other sports that train indoors will use it. Non-athletes will also have access to lounge and meeting areas.”

DSU Eyes New Convocation Center

In addition to the field house, the state included language supporting a future DSU convocation center. The center would host basketball, volleyball, wrestling, and major events.

This new arena would replace Memorial Hall, the current 1,800-seat venue. The new space is projected to cost $90 million.

“Our location could become a key venue for high school sports,” Tucker said. “We’re in the center of Delaware.”

In 2024, DSU hosted the Delaware state football championships at Alumni Stadium after issues with rental fees at the University of Delaware.

“It’s about creating a better experience for athletes and families,” Tucker said. “Families from Southern Delaware shouldn’t have to drive to the north of the state for big games.”

Jackson Wants to Level the Playing Field

Coach Jackson hopes these changes close the gap between DSU and the University of Delaware.

“Delaware has been getting a lot of talent over us,” he said. “If we can offer similar resources, we’ll get players we’ve missed in the past.”

What’s Next for DSU Athletics?

The field house doesn’t have a firm start date yet. Tucker said the goal is to finish construction in 18 to 24 months.

The convocation center will take more time and funding. But Jackson remains optimistic.

“The sky’s the limit,” he said. “Success this season will open eyes. We’ll be hard to overlook.”

Philadelphia Eagles legend LeSean McCoy will be teaming up with two of his former teammates-turned-HBCU coaches. The two-time All-Pro running back, will serve as a special guest host for the 2025 MEAC Football Media Day. The event takes place on July 22 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the home of the NFL’s Ravens.

This year marks a major change. For decades, the MEAC held its media day in Norfolk, Virginia. Now, the event moves to an NFL venue, reflecting the league’s commitment to raising the profile of its HBCU programs.

Philadelphia Eagles trio re-unites

LeSean McCoy’s appearance is more than just a celebrity booking. He was a teammate of both Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson, two new MEAC head coaches. Vick now leads Norfolk State, while Jackson is the head coach at Delaware State. All three were teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles, and McCoy co-hosted the podcast 25/10 with Jackson.

Their shared NFL experience brings national relevance to the MEAC, highlighting the conference’s growing relationship with professional football.

HBCU conference steps into the limelight

The MEAC features six football-playing HBCU institutions. Its programs have produced generations of NFL athletes, civic leaders, and cultural icons. Commissioner Sonja Stills praised the move to Baltimore, calling it “a historic milestone” that showcases the MEAC’s “growing visibility, strength, and momentum.”

NFL leadership also supports the move. “Bringing MEAC Football Media Day to M&T Bank Stadium continues the longstanding NFL relationship with HBCUs,” said Troy Vincent, the NFL’s Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

A Showcase for the Season Ahead
Veteran ESPN personalities Tiffany Greene and Jay Walker will host the event live on ESPN+. Coaches and players from all six MEAC football teams will be in attendance. They’ll share insights and expectations for the upcoming season, which kicks off August 23 with the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

LeSean McCoy’s presence adds star power to an event already full of tradition and promise. For fans of HBCU football and the Philadelphia Eagles alike, this year’s media day offers something special—a celebration of past greatness and a preview of what’s ahead.

A regular summer workout turned into a masterclass at Delaware State University, thanks to the surprise appearance of two NFL talents — and an HBCU coaching newcomer already making noise. Chase Young, the former No. 2 overall NFL Draft pick and newly minted New Orleans Saint, pulled up to Delaware State University alongside Jaret Patterson, now with the Los Angeles Chargers. But they didn’t come just to watch.

The two pros suited up — helmets and all — and got in real work on Alumni Field. DSU posted clips of the pair working out and speaking with players, and one video especially stood out: Young, raw, and honest, delivering a speech that instantly changed the energy in the room.

Real Talk from Chase Young

“Want to talk to y’all about consistency,” Young said, addressing the HBCU squad. “As y’all know me. Second overall pick, got hurt my second year. Third year, played the last three games. My fourth year, I had got a neck injury in preseason that nobody really knew about, right? and I’m getting traded to the Niners, right? So I get a neck injury, now I gotta play to the Super Bowl, and I play every game in the whole season, right? After the season, I get surgery, come back, and play on the one year, right? How that sh*t work? Right? Like one for 13 (1 year, 13 million dollar contract). None of that sh*t was guaranteed.”

It wasn’t just motivation — it was lived experience. The former Ohio State star and Washington standout walked Delaware State’s players through a journey that included injuries, trades, and a Super Bowl run, all underscored by resilience, reality, and hard work.

Behind the scenes of Chase Young’s visit is DeSean Jackson, an ex-NFL great, now the head coach of the Delaware State Hornets. His fingerprints are already all over the program’s culture shift. Fresh off his own NFL retirement, Jackson is pulling from his deep Rolodex of league connections — much like Deion Sanders did at Jackson State — and bringing the pros straight to the HBCU sidelines.

All Facts

On the AllFacts Podcast with Keyshawn Johnson, Jackson opened up about the unexpected opportunity at DSU, saying:

“I just want to give a moment to say how appreciative I am of the opportunity. I was coaching high school with my brother in Long Beach, didn’t know my next steps after retirement… but when I got out there, I regained another passion. I’m able to give back to these young kids everything I’ve been taught — from Andy Reid to Sean McVay. I feel like Coach Prime opened doors up for guys like myself.”

Now he’s walking through them. Delaware State may have only won two games the past two seasons, but Jackson isn’t fazed.

“I’ma bet on myself,” he said. “Ain’t no shoe too big for me to fill.”

With NFL stars showing up, game-ready and dropping unfiltered gems, DeSean Jackson isn’t just building a team. He’s leading the next movement in HBCU football.

Delaware State University (DSU) is making headlines with compelling additions to its HBCU football program. Head coach DeSean Jackson recently secured commitments from two standout wide receivers, Jonathan Manley and Kelson Tate, both out of Weddington High School in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Both players received offers after impressing at Jackson’s first-ever Mega Camp, a major recruiting showcase on DSU’s campus. The event drew over 400 athletes and multiple college programs and confirmed DSU’s rising visibility on the recruiting trail. These signings reflect a clear strategy and offer immediate impact potential in HBCU football.

Impact of North Carolina Duo on Delaware State Football

Manley, a 5’7”, 150-pound athlete from Weddington High School, is known for his elite speed and agility. A dynamic presence as a receiver and return specialist, he should fit nicely into Jackson’s versatile offensive schemes. In his junior season, Manley caught 22 receptions for 435 yards and five touchdowns.

Tate, standing 5’8” and weighing 175 pounds, is a reliable target with strong hands and solid yard-after-catch skills. He posted 395 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season. His consistency and big-play ability are expected to make a difference.

Both wideouts boasted offers from NC college football powerhouse Appalachian State after standout seasons for a Weddington squad that finished with a 13-1 record and conference title.

DeSean Jackson’s Delaware State Recruiting Strategy Delivers

This recruiting success builds on one of the most intriguing first-year classes under a new HBCU head coach. Jackson’s blend of FBS transfers, high-upside high school talent, and targeted geographic recruiting is working. With talent pipelines forming in North Carolina and California, DSU continues to grow stronger. The Hornets are clearly reshaping their roster with players suited for Jackson’s fast-paced, pro-style system.

Delaware State Football’s Rising Future Under DeSean Jackson

Although it’s early, these recruiting wins suggest a promising direction. Jackson’s approach—based on pro experience and a focus on player development—is resonating. His efforts are attracting athletes from football-rich states like North Carolina.

By investing in dynamic young players, Delaware State is laying a solid foundation for future success. Manley and Tate not only improve the wide receiver unit but also prove DSU can compete for recruits who might otherwise choose bigger programs.

As the Hornets head into the upcoming season, fans will be watching to see how these recruits perform. Their arrival shows that Delaware State is a program on the rise, thanks to bold recruiting moves and DeSean Jackson’s leadership.

In a sweeping move that could redefine higher education for underrepresented communities, six prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have joined forces to launch the first entirely online, degree-granting consortium tailored to the HBCU experience, dubbed eHBCU.

The initiative extends the cultural legacy, academic rigor, and community-centered values of HBCUs into the digital realm. Backed by philanthropic heavyweights including Blue Meridian Partners and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. This digital campus is designed to serve students globally. Breaking geographic and economic barriers that often limit access to traditional HBCU campuses.

Importantly, all degree-granting programs offered through eHBCU are provided by fully accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Each institution meets rigorous academic and institutional standards. Ensuring that students receive a recognized and respected education across all eligible programs. This assurance preserves the integrity and reputation that HBCUs have built over generations, now delivered on a global digital platform.

“This is more than online learning,” said Terry Jeffries, Executive Director of eHBCU. “It’s a movement to expand the reach of what HBCUs have always represented—academic excellence, cultural pride, and upward mobility.”

A Consortium Rooted in Legacy

The consortium comprises six founding institutions:

  • Delaware State University
  • Alabama State University
  • Southern University and A&M College
  • Southern University at New Orleans
  • Southern University at Shreveport
  • Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design

Together, these institutions represent a cross-section of the HBCU landscape. From comprehensive research universities to a specialized design college, each brings distinct strengths to the virtual platform.

The Vision Behind eHBCU

Dr. Tony Allen, President of Delaware State University and Chair of the eHBCU Advisory Board, emphasized that the digital transformation isn’t just reactive—it’s proactive.

“We are ensuring that the HBCU experience, its mentorship, community, and cultural significance, remains intact even when delivered online,” Allen said. “This is a long-term investment in access and equity.”

Allen, a former speechwriter for then-Senator Joe Biden and current Chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs, has steered Delaware State into a national model for institutional innovation. His leadership underscores the seriousness of the consortium’s ambitions.

Leadership with Proven Track Records

eHBCU’s leadership roster reads like a who’s who of accomplished educators and trailblazers in Black higher education:

  • Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, President of Pensole Lewis College, revitalized the nation’s only design-focused HBCU and has been lauded by Fast Company as one of the most innovative educators in the world.
  • Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., President of Alabama State University, brings legislative and administrative experience, having served as both a state senator and K–12 administrator.
  • John K. Pierre, Chancellor of Southern University and A&M College, is a legal scholar and civil rights advocate who previously led Southern University Law Center to national prominence.
  • Dr. James H. Ammons, Jr., Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans, is a veteran of HBCU leadership with prior presidencies at Florida A&M University and North Carolina Central University.
  • Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Chancellor of Southern University at Shreveport, made history as the first woman to lead SUSLA and is a champion for community college students and digital learning innovation.
Degrees That Match Workforce Demand

Upon launch, eHBCU will offer access to 33 online degree and certification programs spanning high-demand fields such as:

  • Computer Science and IT
  • Healthcare
  • Accounting
  • Business Management
  • Professional Development

According to Jeffries, the curriculum was designed in direct response to labor market trends and workforce gaps. Providing students not just with education but with tangible career pathways.

Addressing the Access Gap

Data continues to show that Black students are underrepresented in many high-growth sectors. eHBCU aims to bridge that gap by offering flexible learning formats while preserving the mentorship and community that often defines the HBCU experience.

“This platform is built not just for convenience, but for belonging,” said Jeffries. “We understand that Black students are looking for spaces where they can thrive academically and culturally, and eHBCU delivers that.”

A Philanthropic Backbone

The backing of organizations like Blue Meridian Partners—a philanthropic investment organization focused on scaling solutions to social problems—and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund adds both financial muscle and national credibility to the effort.

These partnerships are critical as eHBCU seeks to scale beyond its initial online degree offerings, with ambitions to include more HBCUs and a broader range of programs in the future.

A Digital Future Built on Tradition

While the move to virtual education is not unique in higher ed. The eHBCU consortium distinguishes itself by centering Black cultural identity within the online learning experience.

“It’s a 21st-century model built on a 19th-century tradition,” said Dr. Ross of Alabama State. “HBCUs have always been engines of opportunity. Now, we’re making that opportunity borderless.”

What’s Next?

Enrollment is now open for programs through the eHBCU platform, with student support services ranging from academic advising to career coaching—all offered virtually. The founding institutions expect to serve thousands of students globally within the first year.

HBCU wrestling has reached a historic milestone. Kenya Sloan has been named head coach of Delaware State University’s NCAA Division I women’s wrestling team—the first of its kind at any historically Black college or university. She now leads more than a team. She leads a cultural shift in collegiate athletics.

How Family Fueled Kenya Sloan’s Wrestling Journey

Sloan’s wrestling journey began at age seven, inspired by her younger brother. Their bond shaped her early motivation to compete.

“I remember being able to just have the connection with him and for us to be able to do something together that we both loved and was hard for both of us,” she said.

That encouragement stayed with her throughout her youth. “He’d be waiting on the side of the mat for me to come off… and there’s nobody who wanted to see me win more than my brother,” she added.

Sloan Made History in Tennessee Wrestling

During high school, Sloan became a four-time girls’ state champion in Tennessee—a record-setting achievement.

“It was non-negotiable for me to want to say championship four times,” she said. “When I choose something, I’m a bit stubborn so it was easy to stay focused on it.”

Delaware State Benefits from College Success

At Campbellsville University, Sloan earned a national title and led both on and off the mat.

“I went to college with an open mind,” she said. “I knew if I was gonna wrestle in college I was gonna dedicate myself to it.”

Moreover, she stayed grounded. “I knew anything that I did anywhere was a representation of myself and my family and it was setting me up for my future,” she added.

Sacred Heart Reinforced Her HBCU Wrestling Vision

Before arriving at Delaware State, Sloan served on the coaching staff at Sacred Heart University.

“My biggest takeaway coaching at Sacred Heart really gave me an excitement for this Division 1 movement,” she said. “It inspired me to pursue Division 1 opportunities elsewhere just to provide again more opportunities for people who have that dream.”

She left with more than experience. “I felt like I got to join another part of the family,” she said. “Even though I’m not their coach anymore, those girls are still my family.”

Mentorship Is Central to Sloan’s Delaware State Mission

In addition to wrestling, Sloan co-authored “Can We Go to Lunch?”, a book on mentoring teens, with her mentor, Kendra Berry.

“Writing through some of the lessons that we learned helped me to see how much weight there is in influencing the life of a young person,” she said.

Consequently, that philosophy now guides her coaching. “It helps me to walk into this role with a little bit more purpose and maybe heaviness—but in a good way,” she added. “It’s a good heavy. It’s a good weight to carry.”

What HBCU Wrestling Will Look Like at Delaware State

At Delaware State, Kenya Sloan promises a competitive, close-knit culture.

“You can expect a team with great camaraderie,” she said. “But also a team that shows up for business. We don’t need to be perfect—but we will give our best.”

Furthermore, she sees this as a turning point for women in college wrestling, especially at HBCUs.

Gratitude for HBCU Wrestling and the DSU Opportunity

Sloan recognizes this opportunity isn’t just hers—it’s shared.

“I want to specifically extend my gratitude to HBCU Wrestling,” Sloan said. “Before this was my dream, it was someone else’s dream to start a program and give opportunities to women who have never had this opportunity. They really put in the legwork to making sure that this was a possibility.”

“They found people like Delaware State University’s administration and then me to help make that dream a reality,” she added.

Philadelphia, PA – Presale tickets are officially live for one of the most anticipated HBCU football games of the year. On Thursday, October 30, two Philadelphia Eagles legends—DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick—will return to Lincoln Financial Field as head coaches in a game that blends NFL legacy with HBCU pride.

Jackson’s Delaware State Hornets will face off against Vick’s Norfolk State Spartans in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matchup unlike any other.

A Unique HBCU Moment in an NFL Stadium

This isn’t just another HBCU football game in a pro stadium. While events like the Celebration Bowl, Orange Blossom Classic, and Southern Heritage Classic have showcased HBCU culture in NFL venues, this game is different.

This regular-season, MEAC matchup will impact the conference standings and takes place in one of the NFL’s premier stadiums, with two of the most electrifying players in Eagles history now leading their teams as head coaches.

“We are thrilled to host two of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country,” said Frank Gumienny, COO of the Philadelphia Eagles. “DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick are blazing new trails in their respective careers that we are all incredibly proud of.”

Presale Tickets Now Live

Tickets went on presale Tuesday, June 17, at 10 AM on Ticketmaster.com. Fans should act fast. With Jackson and Vick leading their squads, this game just might sell out fast.

The Philadelphia Eagles released an energetic hype video to announce the presale. Reminding fans of the duo’s legendary moments in midnight green—and building excitement for their return in a new role.

Both Jackson and Vick had career-defining performances at Lincoln Financial Field. In 2010, they pulled off one of the most iconic comebacks in NFL history—known as the Miracle at the New Meadowlands.

“To be playing in Philly, at the Linc, on the field Coach Vick and I called home for many years, will be special,” said DeSean Jackson. “It means a lot for our players, alumni, and HBCU culture across the country.”

Michael Vick echoed the excitement.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue,” Vick said. “Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories at Lincoln Financial Field. I’m thrilled to return as a head coach for this historic moment.”

More Than a Game

The matchup goes beyond football. Programming around the game will include:

  • Career readiness workshops
  • Work-based learning opportunities
  • Networking events with both coaches

It’s all part of a broader mission to showcase the power and value of HBCU institutions.

“While we are both excited about the game, this is more than that,” said Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston (Norfolk State) and Dr. Tony Allen (Delaware State) in a joint statement. “The measure of this game’s success will be in the light it shines on the power of our HBCU community.”

With the buzz already building from the hype video and early ticket announcements, this showdown is shaping up to be a cultural moment. It’s about more than touchdowns and trophies—it’s about legacy, leadership, and lifting HBCU programs into the national spotlight in a way that only legends like Vick and Jackson can.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver DeSean Jackson was back in the NFL, for at least a day. Jackson made a surprise appearance at the team’s mandatory minicamp practice Tuesday, drawing warm recognition from players, staff, and fans alike. Jackson, known for his electrifying speed and game-breaking ability, played eight seasons over two stints with the Eagles. His career in Philadelphia included three Pro Bowl selections and some of the most memorable plays in franchise history — none more iconic than his walk-off punt return touchdown against the New York Giants in 2010.

Now entering a new chapter in football, Jackson has transitioned from player to coach. He currently serves as the head football coach at Delaware State University, a role he assumed earlier this year. His visit to the Eagles minicamp served both as a homecoming and an opportunity to stay connected with the NFL community, likely offering perspective and inspiration to both veterans and rookies on the roster.

Jackson’s visit to the Eagles camp comes on the heels of his first megacamp at Delaware State. Jackson welcomed more than 400 high school athletes to the school’s inaugural high school mega camp, an event aimed at identifying talent and strengthening recruiting ties across the region, and showing what his HBCU has to offer.

“Man, shoot, there’s a lot of great talent out here today,” DeSean Jackson told HBCU Gameday. “Anytime we get a chance to get out here, get eyes on guys, and evaluate their movement, speed, and competitiveness — that’s a win.”

Jackson’s presence in Philadelphia won’t be the last time in 2025. The matchup between Delaware State and Michael Vick’s Norfolk State Spartans will be played at Lincoln Financial Field. Originally slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Delaware State’s Alumni Stadium, the game will now take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 at the home of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The decision comes after unprecedented anticipation for the matchup between two well-known head coaches.

Delaware State University is making HBCU history. The school has officially named Kenya Sloan as the inaugural head coach of its new women’s wrestling program, making DSU the first HBCU to launch a varsity team in the sport.

This groundbreaking hire comes ahead of the 2025–26 season, when women’s wrestling will become a full NCAA championship sport. With this move, Delaware State positions itself as a trailblazer in expanding opportunities for Black female student-athletes.

Sloan Brings Championship Experience

Sloan arrives at DSU from Sacred Heart University, where she served as an assistant coach for their women’s wrestling team. She is a 2022 NAIA national champion from Campbellsville University and a former Junior Pan-American gold medalist. She also led the Knoxville Girls Wrestling Club to a Tennessee state freestyle title and has coached at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center.

“This is about creating space and legacy,” Sloan told DSUHornets.com. “I’m honored to lead this groundbreaking program at Delaware State.”

A First for HBCU Athletics

This appointment makes Delaware State University the first historically Black college or university to sponsor varsity-level women’s wrestling. DSU Director of Athletics Tony Tucker emphasized the significance of the hire in an official statement.

“Kenya Sloan is the right leader at the right time,” Tucker said. “She brings championship experience and a commitment to developing student-athletes at the highest level.”

Recruiting efforts for the program have already begun, with the team set to begin competition in winter 2025.

Why It Matters

This decision underscores the ongoing evolution of HBCU athletics, particularly in expanding gender equity and Olympic sport representation. With Sloan at the helm, Delaware State isn’t just building a wrestling team—it’s setting a national precedent.

As the first HBCU to make this move, DSU is carving out a new lane in collegiate athletics, elevating both the profile of women’s wrestling and the visibility of HBCU sports programs.

Held at Alumni Stadium, the camp included drills, evaluations, and networking opportunities with college coaches from across the region. The strong turnout marked a major milestone for the Hornets. Still, questions remain about the long-term impact.

“This is our first-ever high school mega camp, and it’s inspiring to see how many kids want to be part of this,” DeSean Jackson told HBCU Gameday. “Anytime we get a chance to get back out here, get eyes on guys, and really evaluate their movement, speed, and competitiveness — that’s a win.”

Now in his first season at the helm, Jackson hopes events like this can revitalize Delaware State football.

Recruiting at the Grassroots Level

The camp also helped rebuild recruiting pipelines that many high school athletes have lost access to due to the rise of the transfer portal.

“The high school level is getting overlooked right now,” Jackson said. “That’s why these camps are so important — for exposure and visibility.”

He also emphasized the importance of community connections. “We’re going to keep encouraging our staff and players to help close that gap between the community and alumni.”

HBCUs Take the Lead in Player Development

The event reflects a growing trend among HBCUs to invest in grassroots recruiting. Programs like Jackson State and South Carolina State have already drawn national attention. Delaware State is now working to join that movement in a meaningful way.

“Look — HBCUs are where it’s at right now,” Jackson said. “We want to continue to elevate that and help take it to another level.”

Looking Ahead

Delaware State’s high school mega camp sent a strong message. The next step is turning that energy into sustained success on the field — and within the broader HBCU landscape.

DeSean Jackson has officially opened a new chapter at Delaware State University. The first-year head coach and former NFL standout welcomed more than 400 high school athletes to the school’s inaugural high school mega camp, an event aimed at identifying talent and strengthening recruiting ties across the region, and showing what his HBCU has to offer.

Delaware State Launches HBCU Mega Camp to Expand Recruiting

Held at Alumni Stadium, the camp brought together student-athletes and college coaches from across the East Coast. Jackson, known for his on-field explosiveness, was hands-on throughout the day, leading drills, giving feedback, and evaluating prospects alongside his coaching staff.

“Man, shoot, there’s a lot of great talent out here today,” DeSean Jackson told HBCU Gameday. “Anytime we get a chance to get out here, get eyes on guys, and evaluate their movement, speed, and competitiveness — that’s a win.”

The event represents an early step in the NFL great’s plan to rebuild Delaware State’s football program and establish a stronger presence in HBCU recruiting circles.

Addressing Challenges in the Current Recruiting Landscape

Jackson also acknowledged how the college football recruiting process has changed, particularly for high school athletes. With the transfer portal dominating many programs’ strategies, fewer opportunities are available for younger players coming directly out of high school.

“The high school level is getting overlooked right now,” he said. “That’s why these camps are so important — for exposure and visibility. Coaches need to see these kids live, moving, competing.”

By hosting this camp, Delaware State not only provided a platform for evaluation but also demonstrated a commitment to recruiting at the grassroots level.

Jackson’s Vision for Delaware State and HBCU Growth

Beyond player development, Jackson emphasized his desire to foster a new culture within Delaware State football. For him, hosting the camp is about building momentum and reconnecting the program with the broader football community.

“It’s a blessing,” he said. “To be in a position to help change the dynamic here — that’s what I’m here for. It’s about changing the culture, creating energy — and we’ve already seen the shift.”

That shift includes enhancing alumni relations, increasing the program’s visibility, and developing stronger pipelines to talent-rich areas.

Highlighting the Broader Role of HBCUs in College Football

As he looks ahead, Jackson sees Delaware State as part of a wider movement within HBCU football. He referenced figures like Michael Vick and Deion Sanders. Former NFL stars who have taken on roles at HBCUs, to highlight how the perception of these programs is evolving.

“Look — HBCUs are where it’s at right now,” Jackson said. “Guys like Michael Vick, Deion Sanders at Jackson State — South Carolina State too — there’s great ball being played. We want to continue to elevate that and help take it to another level.”

With an energized coaching staff and early support from recruits and alumni alike, Delaware State appears poised to take meaningful steps forward under Jackson’s leadership.

Former Philadelphia Eagles stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson are bringing their HBCU squads to their former NFL stadium.

Originally slated for Saturday, Nov. 1 at Delaware State’s Alumni Stadium, the game will now take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30 at Lincoln Financial Field – home to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The decision comes after unprecedented anticipation for the matchup between two well-known head coaches – Michael Vick and Desean Jackson. The close friends excelled together as teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles, providing one of the most popular quarterback-wide receiver connections of the 21st century.

“While we are both excited about the game, this is more than that,” Norfolk State President Javaune Adams-Gaston and Delaware State President Tony Allen said in a joint statement. “It is an opportunity to showcase our talented students on and off the field, as well as the great many faculty, staff, and coaches whose work is a labor of love. The measure of this game’s success will be in the light it shines on the power of our HBCU community; we are the best return on investment in higher education.”

“I came to Delaware State University to start a new phase of my career with a unique institution that cares about its students and is helping to transform their futures,” Jackson said. “I know Coach Vick feels the same way at Norfolk State. A part of that transformation is opening our students and scholar athletes up to a whole new set of experiences at the highest level. For our teams to be playing in Philly, at Lincoln Financial Field, on the field Coach Vick and I called home for many years will be special for our players, our coaching staffs, our Alumni and fans, and for HBCU culture around the country.”

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes to play in a world-class venue on a world-class stage,” Vick added. “Coach Jackson and I made so many unforgettable memories together at Lincoln Financial Field – this stadium holds special meaning in my NFL career. I am thrilled to be a part of this historic moment and want to thank the Philadelphia Eagles, Norfolk State, and Delaware State for their collaboration to make this happen.”

Tickets will go on sale at later date.

DOVER, Del. – Delaware State University has officially welcomed Eugene J. Diggs II as its new Director of Bands. Known for his innovative approach and dedication to excellence, Diggs will lead The Approaching Storm Marching Band, one of the most dynamic HBCU band programs in the country.

A native of Washington, D.C., Diggs is a graduate of Crossland High School and Morgan State University. At Morgan State, he served as a four-year drum major and led the Eta Gamma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his career in music education.

Career in Music

Diggs began his career in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he founded the district’s only middle school marching band. Later, he revitalized the Hopewell High School band, growing it from 16 to 140 students. His leadership earned multiple Grand Champion titles and national recognition.

After returning to Morgan State, Diggs worked alongside legendary HBCU band directors Dr. Melvin Miles and Dr. Jorim Reid. Together, they helped prepare the Bears for their first-ever appearance at the prestigious Honda Battle of the Bands.

At Lincoln University of Missouri, Diggs served as Director of Bands, where he tripled the size of the Marching Musical Storm. He also introduced innovative curriculum development that strengthened the program’s educational foundation. His achievements at Lincoln earned him respect throughout the HBCU music education community.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Diggs holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Gardner-Webb University. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Music Education at Boston University, with a focus on research examining equity in music education between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and predominantly White Institutions (PWIs).

Delaware State is looking to flip the East Coast recruiting scene on its head. Former NFL stars DeSean Jackson and Clinton Portis are turning up the heat as they gear up to host their first-ever HBCU Mega Camp at Alumni Stadium on June 7—and they’re not just promising drills and daps. They’re promising scholarships.

“Mega Camp, all high schoolers, all ballers,” Jackson said in a recent video from the DSU field. “We got the fastest 40 man, we wanna see who’s the fastest dude in Delaware, Florida, California. Wherever y’all from, come get it in right here, on DSU, man.”

Portis, never one to back down from the spotlight, matched the energy. “Scholarship offers on deck, DMV come out and represent.”

Mega Camp Opportunity

Mega camps are large-scale football showcases where prospects can demonstrate their skills in front of numerous college coaches. These events are crucial for athletes seeking scholarships and roster spots. Offering direct evaluation by decision-makers from various programs.

These massive showcases bring in prospects from multiple graduating classes—2026, 2027, 2028, and even JUCOs and transfers—for a shot at impressing college coaches from all over. It’s exposure meets opportunity, and for players who might be flying under the radar, it could be a game-changer.

Jackson State is teaming up with 247Sports to host the biggest HBCU Mega Camp in the country, drawing 40+ schools to Mississippi. Delaware State’s camp is making its own noise. With two NFL legends on the sidelines, it’s shaping up to be the destination for top talent in the Northeast. Power 4 schools like Colorado (Pac-12), Syracuse (ACC), and Maryland (Big Ten) will be in attendance. Similarly, HBCU schools such as Morgan State (MEAC), Bowie State (CIAA), and Livingstone College (CIAA) will also have coaches in attendance.

DeSean Jackson, who capped a 15-year NFL career with over 11,000 all-purpose yards, took the reins at Delaware State in late 2024 with a mission. To elevate the program and the HBCU recruiting footprint in the area. Clinton Portis joined his squad in early 2025, bringing the same edge that made him a two-time Pro Bowler and nearly a 10,000-yard rusher in the league.

Now they’re leveraging their star power for the next generation of HBCU football players.

Delaware State’s HBCU Mega Camp isn’t just a showcase. It’s a level up for HBCU football recruiting on the East Coast. For recruits dreaming of the next level, it’s time to lace up, show out, and secure the bag.

Former NFL star DeSean Jackson is a few months from his first season as a head coach at HBCU Delaware State, but he’s already dealing with the way NIL is changing college football.

“This process has been different for me. The reason why I say this, is I have some players coming in my office asking like ‘coach, I want this amount of money and I’m going to the highest bidder,” Jackson said in a recent interview on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams.

The now 39-year-old former Cal Bears receiver tried to put himself in his players’ shoes, but he had a tough time.

“If I would have went into Nick Saban and Pete Carroll’s office back then and been like ‘I want this and I want that — they would have looked at me like you better get out of here.”

Yes, Jackson admits this is a different era.

DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick

“I honestly look at this era now as free agency. It’s almost like an NFL system. It’s like a farm system to the NFL,” Jackson said. “The NCAA, they’re going to have to figure this out. There’s no (salary) cap on it. Some schools are going to be able to pay these guys millions of dollars. And then some schools like us we don’t really have the resources — HBCU or black college — we don’t really have the resources to compete with Oregon or Alabama or al these other schools and we’re a Division I school.”

Jackson says that despite the lack of resources, he’s happy with the results he’s gotten at Delaware State. He says much of that is due to the relationships that he has.

“I may not be able to offer a million dollars. I may be able to offer $20k in NIL, but my name may be able to make up the rest of that money.”

DeSean Jackson is hosting a megacamp on June 7 that will feature former NFL star and Miami Hurricanes legend Clinton Portis. He also revealed that talks are on-going between Delaware State, Norfolk State and the Philadelphia Eagles to move the DSU-NSU game featuring Jackson coaching against Michael Vick.

“It may be a different date. We’re trying to work on a date,” Jackson said. “It may be Oct. 30. We’re trying to get that at Lincoln Financial Field. We’re trying to get that at the Eagles’ stadium.”

Jackson said that things are going great on Delaware State’s end and that they are waiting on Norfolk State to accept. No announcements have been made, though.

The 2025 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships showcased the continued rise of HBCU track excellence. Howard University claimed the women’s title, while Norfolk State University captured the men’s crown—proving both HBCU programs remain powerhouses in the MEAC.

Howard Women Run Away with MEAC Track Title

Howard’s women’s track and field team delivered a dominant performance, continuing their reign with a fourth consecutive MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Bison finished with 292 points—over 100 more than their closest rival.

The HBCU program’s success was comprehensive. Howard dominated across all disciplines, collecting 14 gold medals and making 28 podium appearances, including three complete podium sweeps. From sprints to distance, every event reflected the team’s preparation and depth.

Star sprinter Kailei Collins claimed victory in the 100m dash (11.28), while teammate Kiya Lawson secured gold in the 200m (22.87) and 400m (53.75). In hurdles, Marcia Sey captured the 100m hurdles title in 12.84 seconds.

Middle-distance runner Camille Egbula earned back-to-back wins in the 800m and 1500m. Joslyn Crosby added a win in the 5,000m. Howard’s 4x100m relay squad—Collins, Sey, Tiffani-Rae Pittman, and Aiyana Gray-Williams—sealed their dominance with a 44.15-second win.

Norfolk State Track Team Secures Men’s Championship

Norfolk State’s men’s track team continued its MEAC dynasty, earning its fourth straight outdoor championship. The Spartans totalled 227 points, separating themselves from the competition.

This HBCU program excelled in both sprints and distance events. In the 10,000m, Gidion Sigei led a podium sweep with a time of 30:36.11. Norfolk State repeated the sweep in the 5,000m behind Sigei, Victor Jumo, and Lewis Too.

On the sprint side, Premier Wynn won the 400m (46.53), while Kendrick Winfield claimed the 200m (20.70) after finishing second in the 400. The Spartans capped their performance with a dominant 4x400m relay win in 3:09.34.

Howard Men Share Second in Competitive Finish

Howard University’s men’s team tied for second place with Coppin State, each scoring 111.5 points. The Bison were led by standout hurdler Noah Langford, who won the 110m hurdles (13.64) and the 400m hurdles (50.65). He later anchored the 4x400m relay team to a second-place finish in 3:09.66.

Other key contributors to the HBCU program’s performance included Goba Dan-Princewill, who finished third in the 100m dash, and Chase Drewery, who earned silver in the triple jump with a mark of 15.44 meters.

MEAC Track & Field Shows HBCU Growth and Depth

The 2025 MEAC Track & Field Championships reflected not only the success of Howard and Norfolk State, but also the rising strength of HBCU programs across the board. Teams like Coppin State, Morgan State, and Delaware State made their presence felt through individual standout performances.

Although the championship trophies went to two familiar programs, the overall depth and competitiveness suggest a bright future for MEAC track and field. With several HBCU athletes advancing to the NCAA Preliminary rounds, the conference is poised to make an impact at the national level.

As the outdoor track season progresses, HBCU programs in the MEAC continue to prove they belong on the national stage—with speed, strength, and strategy that match any conference in the country.

In a rare and headline-worthy transfer, HBCU football program Delaware State has added Division III standout James Woods of Brevard College to its football roster. First-year head coach and NFL great DeSean Jackson continues to make waves with his unconventional recruiting approach, and Woods may be his most intriguing addition yet. The North Carolina native announced his transfer via his X account, confirming his move from the non-scholarship ranks of DIII to the FCS-HBCU stage.

Woods, a 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back, turned heads at Brevard College, where he earned All-conference honors. Last season, He had four interceptions, nine pass breakups, and 31 tackles in seven games. Woods finished the year with two touchdowns, including a 60-yard pick-six that earned him a spot on the D3Football.com National Team of the Week.

DIII Star

In three seasons at Brevard, Woods put up an impressive career stat sheet. He played in 26 games, recorded 112 total tackles (89 solo), five interceptions, three forced fumbles, three blocks, and three touchdowns. Despite playing at a program without athletic scholarships, his production made him a standout talent at the DIII level.

It is exceedingly rare for a Division III player to make the leap directly to an FCS program. Most transfers from DIII either step into smaller NAIA or DII schools, and only a handful per year make the jump to FCS or higher. Notable exceptions include players like Ali Marpet (Hobart to the NFL) and Brandon Zylstra (Concordia to the CFL and NFL), proving the pipeline is narrow but not impossible.

HBCU Delaware State DeSean Jackson

Since taking the reins at Delaware State, DeSean Jackson has committed to finding overlooked talent from coast to coast. His recruiting trail has included players from under-recruited areas, junior colleges, and now Division III—a move that reflects both his eye for talent and his belief in second chances. Woods adds to a growing list of transfers and signees who come from nontraditional paths but hope to bring hunger and raw ability to the Hornets’ locker room.

For Delaware State, a program looking to rise in the HBCU football landscape, these kinds of moves signal a fresh philosophy. Jackson is betting on upside and passion over pedigree. Whether that gamble pays off will unfold on the field, but one thing is certain—James Woods’ journey from Brevard to the FCS spotlight is already one of the most intriguing stories of this recruiting cycle.

With talent like Woods and a coach unafraid to break the mold, Delaware State’s upcoming season will be one to watch in the world of HBCU football.

The post DeSean Jackson building Delaware State roster appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Delaware State entered spring football with just 63 players on the roster. That number was enough for first-year head coach DeSean Jackson to run practices and evaluate talent, but it also highlighted the work ahead for the HBCU program.

To start, Jackson didn’t make excuses. Instead, he embraced the challenge of building structure and accountability with what he had. Practices were competitive, but thin depth made it difficult to simulate game-like conditions across all units. Still, Jackson viewed the spring as a success.

“Right now we have roughly like 63, 64 guys,” DeSean Jackson said after the spring game. “Summertime comes up, we push 99 hopefully. We opted in to be able to have a larger roster… that cutoff is like 95 guys. We’re going to try to get as close as possible as we can to that.”

With the NCAA moving forward on the House v. NCAA settlement, schools like Delaware State now have the option to expand football rosters beyond traditional scholarship limits. According to the NCAA’s March 2025 update, conferences are working toward implementing a 105-player roster cap. This gives HBCUs like Delaware State more flexibility to grow their programs.

As summer approaches, the Hornets plan to add around 30 to 35 new players. This includes incoming freshmen, transfers, and walk-ons. The goal is not only to improve depth but also to foster internal competition and allow more athletes to develop.

From a national perspective, these changes come at a crucial time for HBCU programs. The House settlement may also allow schools to distribute up to 22% of annual athletics revenue to student-athletes. While not all schools are ready to implement that part yet, opting in to the new roster model gives programs like Delaware State an early advantage.

Finally, Jackson emphasized that building the team is about more than numbers. “We just kind of let the standard be the standard and guys just have to follow,” he said. “The workload is going to be the workload regardless… guys got to just embrace that and just keep fighting.”

As the Hornets continue preparing for the fall, their 63-man spring roster served as a foundation. With DeSean Jackson leading the way, Delaware State is focused on growth, structure, and setting a new standard for HBCU football.

DeSean Jackson is bringing new energy to the football program at HBCU Delaware State. His first spring as head coach showed growth and progress. But he’s not doing it alone. He’s leaning on someone who is leaning also—fellow HBCU coach Michael Vick.

“Me and Michael Vick, man, we’re real brothers,” Jackson said. “We have a brotherhood and it’s special.”

Vick is now the head coach at Norfolk State. Both he and Jackson are first-time college head coaches. They are using their NFL bond to support each other as they build their HBCU programs from the ground up.

“We’re faced with some obstacles… being at a HBCU and the resources,” Jackson said. “We’re putting all our resources together.”

That includes thinking big. Jackson wants Delaware State to play a game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

“We’re trying any and everything to get that game at Lincoln Financial Stadium,” he said. “It’s a possibility for sure.”

Jackson said Big Dom, his former Eagles security chief, is helping behind the scenes to make it happen. This game wouldn’t just be for show. It would attempt to raise the profile of Delaware State and all of HBCU football, especially in the Philadelphia area.

“If we get to success, then that opens the door for more ex-NFL players to coach,” Jackson said.

Jackson and Michael Vick represent a new era of HBCU leadership—one shaped by professional experience and community roots.

“HBCU, man, is back,” Jackson said. “A lot of schools are doing great things right now.”

Their goal is bigger than the scoreboard, according to Jackson. They want to change lives and shift culture.

“We gotta lean on each other to get to success,” Jackson said.

DeSean Jackson and Michael Vick are two former NFL players now leading HBCU football programs and working to build them.
