History has been made for HBCU football at the NCAA Division II level. For the first time ever, five HBCUs have earned spots in the NCAA Division II Football Championship field, a groundbreaking moment announced on Saturday night that underscores just how far the CIAA and SIAC have come on the national stage. With two selections from the CIAA and a record three from the SIAC, this postseason marks a new era of opportunity and legitimacy for Black college football in Division II.

CIAA Sends Two: JCSU and Virginia Union

The CIAA will enter the postseason with two programs—one a rising newcomer and the other an established powerhouse.

Johnson C. Smith: A First-Time Invite

The headline of the bracket is clear: CIAA champion Johnson C. Smith is officially dancing.

At 10–1 overall, the Golden Bulls secured the No. 2 seed in Super Region One, earning both a home game and national respect for the most remarkable season in school history.

This marks JCSU’s first NCAA Division II playoff appearance, a feat decades in the making. Their reward is a home matchup against Frostburg State (9–2), a physical program with postseason experience. But with a conference title, ten wins, and newfound national attention lifting the program, the Bulls enter as one of the region’s most intriguing teams.

Virginia Union: A Four-Year Playoff Run

Joining them is Virginia Union, the CIAA runner-up and one of the hottest programs in Division II.

At 9–2, VUU secured the third seed in Super Region One and will host California (PA) in Richmond.

This selection marks Virginia Union’s fourth consecutive playoff appearance, stretching back to 2022—an unprecedented run for the school and a testament to the sustained excellence built under Dr. Alvin Parker. Last season, the Panthers made national noise by winning two playoff games, the deepest run in program history. They’ll look to build on that momentum again with home-field advantage to start.

SIAC Makes HBCU History With Three Playoff Teams

If the CIAA’s showing is impressive, the SIAC’s haul is historic.

For the first time ever, the conference will send three HBCUs to the Division II playoffs, including the top seed in Super Region Two.

Albany State: No. 1 in the Region

Albany State enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed in Super Region Two after finishing 10–1 overall. Their only loss came to FCS program Florida A&M, making the Golden Rams one of the most battle-tested teams in the country.

ASU will host Valdosta State, the same program that previously fell to Johnson C. Smith earlier this season. It’s a matchup dripping with storyline potential—and one that Albany State enters with supreme confidence after dominating the SIAC from start to finish.

Benedict: Still Dangerous at 9–2

Benedict College (9–2) returns to the postseason after finishing as runner-up in the SIAC Championship Game.
The Tigers earned an at-large bid and will travel to face Wingate (9–2) in what promises to be a hard-hitting, defensive battle. Benedict remains one of the region’s premier programs, fully capable of making another deep playoff push.

Kentucky State: A Breakthrough Moment

Completing the SIAC trio is Kentucky State, which will make its first NCAA Division II playoff appearance after a 9–2 breakthrough season.

The Thorobreds will head to South Carolina to face No. 3 seed Newberry (9–1), a heavyweight with a strong résumé. But KSU’s physical brand and resurgent defense give them a chance to shock the region and extend their historic season.

A Landmark Weekend Ahead

All first-round games will take place this Saturday, kicking off a postseason unlike any we’ve seen in Division II HBCU football history. With five programs in the field—two from the CIAA and three from the SIAC—Black college football has an opportunity to make an unmistakable imprint on the national playoff landscape.

Prepare for a historic weekend. And get ready to see how many HBCU programs advance as the road to the Division II national championship begins.

Only 25 miles separate Richmond and Petersburg, but the gap feels much wider when Virginia Union and Virginia State meet. The Battle of I-95 isn’t just another CIAA matchup — it’s Central Virginia HBCU pride at its loudest. This year, the fight comes to Richmond, home of the Panthers and hometown stage for the league’s most complete team.
For Union’s star running back Curtis Allen, a Petersburg native, it’s personal. He’ll face the team from his own city, this time as the headliner for the Panthers’ championship-bound season.

Why It Matters

Virginia Union (8-1, 7-0 CIAA) has already clinched a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. Still, the Panthers want more — to finish unbeaten in conference play and send a message before the postseason. Under Coach Alvin Parker, they’ve outscored opponents 411–155, averaging 45.7 points per gameVUU.
Virginia State (6-3, 4-2 CIAA) is out of the title race but not out of the fight. The Trojans would love nothing more than to walk into Richmond and spoil Union’s run. In this rivalry, records reset, and pride becomes everything.

Inside the Numbers

Union leads the CIAA in total offense (509 yards per game) and converts on half its third downs (51%). They’ve scored touchdowns on 77% of red-zone trips while holding the ball for over 31 minutes a gameVUU.
Running back Curtis Allen has been unstoppable1,947 yards, 25 touchdowns, and an 8.7-yard average per carry. Quarterback RJ Rosales adds balance with 1,407 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air.
Defensively, Union allows just 17 points per game, giving up only seven rushing touchdowns all season.

Virginia State brings balance and danger. Quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. has thrown for 2,216 yards and 20 touchdowns, completing 63% of his passescume (2). The Trojans average 440 total yards per game, powered by Jaylen Pretlow (533 yards, 7 TDs) and Malik Hunter (594 yards, 5 TDs). However, penalties have stalled drives — 86 flags for 765 yards — and their red-zone conversion rate (64%) leaves points on the field.

Players to Watch

Allen is the headliner. No one in HBCU football or Division II has found the end zone more often. His combination of patience, vision, and burst defines Union’s identity. On defense, Lamumba Howard and Ahmad Ross lead a unit that’s totaled 25 sacks and eight interceptions.
For VSU, Matthews Jr. will have to handle that pressure and find Jaylen Pretlow, whose versatility as a receiver and return man makes him a threat every time he touches the ball.

Hidden Factors

Special teams could shift momentum. Union kicker Brady Myers hasn’t missed an extra point (55-for-55) and has nailed six of seven field goals. For VSU, Pretlow and Carlos Alvarez have combined for 472 kickoff return yards, giving the Trojans a chance to steal field position.

The Atmosphere

Richmond will be electric. Expect the drums of the marching bands to echo down Lombardy Street and the crowd at Hovey Field to be split between maroon and orange. The Battle of I-95 isn’t just a rivalry — it’s an annual family reunion where bragging rights last all year.

Bottom Line

Virginia Union is already in, but perfection is still the goal. A win keeps the Panthers rolling toward the title game. For Virginia State, the motivation is simple — walk into there trap and takeover there trap.
For Curtis Allen, it’s deeper. The Petersburg kid who became a star now has the chance to finish the job in his backyard — against the city that once claimed him. Always an exciting HBCU rivalry.

BLUEFIELD, W.V. — Virginia Union running back Curtis Allen delivered one of the greatest rushing performances in HBCU football history Saturday, leading Virginia Union to a 70–14 road win over Bluefield State that clinched the Panthers a berth in the CIAA Championship Game. The senior running back’s record-setting afternoon cemented his place among the most dominant players in HBCU football this season.

HBCU continues to pump out talent

Allen rushed for a Virginia Union single-game record 369 yards and five touchdowns on just 26 carries, breaking the previous mark of 319 yards set by Jada Byers in 2022. The performance included electrifying runs of 84 and 85 yards, showing the kind of explosiveness that has made Curtis Allen one of the most dangerous playmakers in the HBCU and D2 landscape.

“This was truly a total program effort,” said Virginia Union Head Coach Dr. Alvin Parker. “The team came into this game locked in and ready to compete. Playing on the road always brings its challenges, but I was proud of how everyone responded.”

The Panthers’ offense was nearly unstoppable, piling up a school-record 721 yards of total offense. Quarterback RJ Rosales completed 6 of 8 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns, while wide receiver Larry Hackey added 86 receiving yards and a score. Defensively, Virginia Union held Bluefield State to just 61 yards on the ground and forced two turnovers, with linebacker Ahmad Ross leading the charge.

A season to remember

While the team effort was impressive, Curtis Allen once again stole the spotlight. Through nine games this season, the HBCU standout has rushed for 1,947 yards and 25 touchdowns, averaging an incredible 217 yards per game. He has surpassed the 100-yard mark in every game and gone over 200 yards in five of them. His consistency, power, and breakaway ability have made him the driving force behind Virginia Union’s championship run.

Allen’s season résumé includes 278 yards against Shaw, 249 yards and four touchdowns at Winston-Salem State, and 208 yards versus Lincoln (Pa.). But his record-breaking effort at Bluefield State — highlighted by those two long touchdown runs — was the statement performance that punctuated his dominance across the HBCU football world.

With the victory, Virginia Union improved to 8–1 overall and 7–0 in CIAA play, ensuring its place in the league title game for the third time in a row under Parker. The Panthers will close the regular season at home on November 8 when they host rival Virginia State in the annual Battle of I-95.

For decades, Virginia Union has been known for producing elite running backs, and Curtis Allen now stands firmly among the program’s best. His performance wasn’t just a win for the Panthers — it was a showcase of what makes HBCU football special: history, heart, and heroes who seize the moment.

Virginia Union turned Homecoming Saturday into a celebration of dominance. In front of 9,018 fans at Hovey Field, the Panthers stormed past Lincoln (PA) 66–21 to stay unbeaten in CIAA play and strengthen their spot among the top HBCU programs this season.

The Panthers balanced explosive offense with a relentless defense, improving to 6–1 overall and 4–0 in the CIAA. From start to finish, this was a complete team statement.

Curtis Allen Sets the Tone on the Ground

Running back Curtis Allen set the tempo early and never slowed down. He rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns on just 24 carries, averaging nearly nine yards per attempt. Allen punished tacklers between the tackles, then broke free on long runs that ignited the Homecoming crowd.

His power and vision gave Virginia Union the rhythm it needed to dominate time of possession and wear down Lincoln’s front seven.

RJ Rosales Leads a Sharp Passing Attack

Quarterback RJ Rosales followed up the ground game with precision through the air. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Rosales managed the tempo, avoided mistakes, and spread the ball efficiently to multiple receivers.

Keon Davis caught two touchdowns, Zyaire Tart added a 43-yard score, and D’Pauling-Outlaw hauled in a 38-yard strike from backup quarterback Myles Derricott to close the fourth-quarter fireworks.

Lincoln Flashes Fight Before the Storm

Lincoln (PA) made it interesting early. Quarterback Hamas Duren threw three second quarter touchdowns, including a deep 41-yard connection with Kyrie Tyson that cut the Panthers’ lead to 24–21 midway through the second quarter. For a brief stretch, the Lions matched Virginia Union’s energy and pace.

That momentum ended quickly. Union responded with a 42-point barrage that silenced any upset talk and reminded the conference who runs Hovey Field.

Defense Turns Up the Pressure

Once the Panthers settled in, their defense took control. Virginia Union forced four turnovers, including three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Jymere Melendez intercepted two passes for 72 return yards, while Michael Estrada added a sack and forced fumble.

The defense held Lincoln to just 151 rushing yards and limited the Lions to 3-of-12 on third down. The second half was all Maroon and Grey as the Panthers shut out Lincoln for the final two quarters.

By the Numbers

Total Yards: Virginia Union 555 | Lincoln 302
Passing Yards: VUU 300 | LUPA 151
Rushing Yards: VUU 255 | LUPA 151
Turnovers: VUU 1 | LUPA 4
Red-Zone Efficiency: VUU 6-for-6 | LUPA 2-for-2

Virginia Union averaged 8.5 yards per play and converted every red-zone trip into points — a model of offensive efficiency from start to finish.

Homecoming Energy, Championship Focus

Homecoming at Hovey Field was confirmation that Virginia Union looked like a championship team. The Panthers controlled the trenches, played disciplined football, and showcased the depth that separates them from the rest of the CIAA.

As the second half of the season begins, the path to the CIAA title still runs through Richmond. For the home fans, Saturday wasn’t only a win — it was a reminder that HBCU Virginia Union football continues to set the standard.

Winston-Salem, NC — Virginia Union University left no doubt about its offensive identity on Saturday afternoon, overpowering Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) 44-34 at Bowman Gray Stadium behind a punishing ground attack that dictated the pace from the opening drive.

The Panthers rushed for a staggering 408 yards on 63 carries, chewing up more than 41 minutes of possession and wearing down a WSSU defense that simply couldn’t get off the field. Senior running back Curtis Allen was unstoppable, piling up 249 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 34 carries. From the first quarter on, he set a physical tone that mirrored Virginia Union’s dominance up front.

Virginia Union established control early

Virginia Union’s offensive line imposed its will immediately, opening up holes on the first two drives that ended with Allen touchdown runs of five and 24 yards. By the end of the first quarter, the Panthers led 16-0, having already forced a safety and outgained the Rams 153-13.

When Allen added a four-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, the Panthers were ahead 23-0 and fully in control. Even when Winston-Salem State briefly found life through the air, Virginia Union responded by going right back to the run. The Panthers’ physicality consistently reset the line of scrimmage, creating second-and-short situations that allowed quarterback RJ Rosales to mix in timely play-action passes. Rosales finished with 143 yards and a touchdown while also adding 38 yards and a rushing score.

A brief WSSU rally

Winston-Salem State, to its credit, showed fight in front of its home crowd of roughly 6,000. Sophomore quarterback Daylin Lee connected with Jahari Mitchell three times for touchdowns, including a 36-yard strike that momentarily cut the deficit to 23-7 in the second quarter. Mitchell finished with 151 receiving yards and all three of WSSU’s passing scores, while running back JaQuan Kelly added a 62-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to pull the Rams within 30-21.

But every time WSSU appeared to build momentum, Virginia Union’s run game answered with force. Allen ripped off a 42-yard touchdown less than two minutes after Kelly’s long score, and Rosales capped another bruising drive with a one-yard plunge to push the lead back to 44-21.

Virginia Union, RB

Virginia Union controlled every phase

The final box score told the story of Virginia Union’s control. The Panthers ran 25 more plays, held the ball for over 41 minutes, and converted four red-zone touchdowns. WSSU managed 400 total yards but was forced into short drives due to the Panthers’ clock-draining style.

Defensively, Virginia Union’s front seven limited the Rams to just 20 rushing attempts and registered several key stops on fourth down. Linebacker Ahmad Ross led the way with five tackles, including a tackle for loss, while the Panthers’ defense harassed Lee throughout despite not recording a sack.

Statement win for VUU, back to the drawing board for WSSU

For Virginia Union (4-1, 2-0 CIAA), the victory reaffirmed its standing as one of the CIAA’s most complete teams—capable of dominating the trenches and dictating tempo against quality opponents.

Winston-Salem State (3-3, 1-2 CIAA) showed flashes of explosiveness but couldn’t overcome its early deficit or the relentless pace set by VUU’s ground assault. WSSU is 0-4 against VUU dating back to 2018

As head coach Alvin Parker’s squad continues its championship pursuit, Saturday’s win underscored what the numbers made clear: when Virginia Union runs the football like this, few teams in HBCU football can slow them down

HBCU football fans witnessed another display of power from Virginia Union University on Saturday as the two-time defending CIAA champions crushed Shaw University 59-7 in Durham. Behind a relentless rushing attack, VUU turned its conference opener into a showcase of dominance on the road.

From the opening kickoff, Virginia Union (3-1, 1-0) imposed its will on both sides of the ball. The Panthers finished with a staggering 474 rushing yards, averaging 11.6 yards per carry, and scored six touchdowns on the ground. Running back Curtis Allen led the charge, exploding for 216 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard sprint that silenced the home crowd. Travon Tensley, Tavon McGee, and Kaleb Lott all added rushing scores, giving Shaw’s defense no time to recover.

Quarterback RJ Rosales managed the game efficiently, contributing a touchdown pass and a short rushing score, while Myles Derricott added a 28-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter. In total, Virginia Union racked up 611 yards of offense compared to just 265 for Shaw.

Shaw’s lone bright spot came in the third quarter when Fabian Diggs capped a 75-yard drive with a 12-yard touchdown run. However, that momentum quickly disappeared as the Panthers answered with a lightning-fast two-play, 95-yard touchdown drive that pushed the lead to 45-7.

Defensively, VUU smothered Shaw’s passing attack, sacking quarterback Alexander Marsh six times and forcing three turnovers. Jeremiah Frances led the effort with two sacks, while Cortney Davis snagged an interception to halt a promising Bears drive.

Allen’s impressive game against Shaw put him at 676 yards rushing on the season. He also has 10 touchdowns in just four games.

For Virginia Union, this commanding win serves notice to the rest of the CIAA that the path to the title still runs through Richmond. With a veteran roster, a powerful ground game, and championship pedigree, the Panthers once again look like the team to beat in HBCU Division II football.

]]>
The national spotlight on HBCU football in Division II continues to shine. Still, the balance of power shifts inside the CIAA as the Top 25 polls reset following a pivotal weekend. Virginia Union University, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Virginia State University, and Edward Waters University are all shaping the narrative — whether inside the CIAA race or, in Edward Waters’ case, as an SIAC program gaining national recognition.

Virginia Union Rises to the Top Among HBCU Programs

Fresh off their ranked clash against Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union has emerged as the top-ranked HBCU program in both the D2Football.com and AFCA Division II polls. The Panthers’ 28-10 victory over JCSU not only cemented their place in the Top 25 but also pushed them up to No. 21 in both the D2Football.com and the AFCA poll.

Union has leaned heavily on running back Curtis Allen, who has piled up 460 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through three games. Quarterback RJ Rosales has added 427 yards and three scores through the air, while receivers Keon Davis (161 yards, 1 TD) and Ricky Key Jr. (97 yards) have stretched the field. Defensively, the Panthers are giving up just 18 points per game with 20.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

But the Panthers’ résumé comes with an asterisk: their only blemish is a 41-38 road loss to Edward Waters, an SIAC program that stunned VUU in Jacksonville. The Tigers’ win is the only defeat for Union this season, proving that the road to national respect in Division II HBCU football is starting to run through more than one conference.

JCSU Falls, but Not Forgotten

The loss to Union cost Johnson C. Smith its place in the polls. After the Richmond matchup, the Golden Bulls dropped out of both Top 25s. Still, they picked up 13 votes in the AFCA poll, showing that despite their slide, pollsters believe in their talent and potential.

They’ll look to bounce back at Homecoming this week against Bluefield State as another crucial road game looms at Virginia State on Oct. 5, giving JCSU another chance to re-enter the national conversation.

Virginia State Enters the Picture

If Union is steady and JCSU is regrouping, then Virginia State is surging. The Trojans cracked No. 23 in the D2Football.com poll this week after edging Winston-Salem State by a single point.

In the AFCA poll, VSU remains outside the Top 25, but they’re clearly on the radar, especially given their upcoming tests: a road trip to Fayetteville State followed by a high-stakes home date with JCSU.

Edward Waters: SIAC Spoiler with National Impact

Edward Waters may not play in the CIAA, but their impact can’t be ignored. The Tigers’ dramatic victory over Virginia Union in the Unity Classic was more than just a program milestone — it reshaped the program’s identity within the Division II HBCU landscape. Their 3-0 start included that game-winning field goal, making EWU the only team to defeat Union this fall.

While they’re not in the Top 25, Edward Waters earned a vote in this week’s AFCA poll, showing that national observers are taking notice of the SIAC upstart.

A CIAA Race with National Stakes

Just a week ago, the conversation centered on two nationally ranked HBCUs colliding when Union and JCSU met in Richmond. Now, the picture has widened: Virginia State is in the mix, JCSU is fighting to regain traction, and Edward Waters has emerged from the SIAC.

The CIAA title race is always tense. But as the D2Football.com and AFCA polls show, it’s now a national storyline.

In a matchup that spotlighted the only two ranked Division II HBCU programs, Virginia Union leaned on its championship pedigree to hand rising contender Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) its first loss of the season, 28-10, in the Willard Bailey Classic in front of 7,504 fans in Richmond, VA.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

After a 90-minute weather delay, Senior running back Curtis Allen put the Panthers on his back, rushing for 108 yards and four touchdowns to earn Offensive Player of the Game honors. It was a performance that underscored the difference between a program that has been there before and one still learning how to finish in the CIAA spotlight.

“This was a statement win for our program against a very good JCSU team,” said VUU head coach Dr. Alvin Parker. “Beyond the final score, it was a showcase for HBCU football culture, with two top-25 HBCU teams battling at a high level. The home crowd brought tremendous energy, and our players really fed off that atmosphere.”

Championship Poise vs. Hungry Challenger

JCSU entered Richmond undefeated and eager to prove it belonged among the CIAA elite under head coach Maurice Flowers. The Golden Bulls pushed back early, tying the game at 7-7 on a short touchdown run by Kelvin Durham. Then, adding a late first-half field goal, they trailed just 14-10 at the break.

But where Union showed calm and execution, JCSU stumbled. The Panthers came out of halftime with a physical edge, riding Allen for two more scores while shutting out the Golden Bulls over the final 30 minutes. The second half looked less like a duel of equals and more like a reminder: contenders chase moments, champions seize them.

HBCU Virginia Union JCSU
Numbers That Told the Story
  • Virginia Union (2-1, 1-0 CIAA): 200 rushing yards, 336 total yards of offense. QB RJ Rosales hit two deep connections, including a 55-yarder to Ricky Key Jr.
  • Johnson C. Smith (3-1, 0-1 CIAA): 298 yards of offense. Durham threw for 193 yards but absorbed four sacks and couldn’t find the end zone through the air. WR Brevin Caldwell hauled in 8 passes for 94 yards.

Defensively, JCSU’s Vincent Hill had nine tackles, but Union’s front disrupted consistently, controlling the line of scrimmage when it mattered most.

Building vs. Arriving

For JCSU, the night was another chapter in a story that HBCU Gameday cameras continue to capture in the HBCU Hard Knocks docuseries Brick x Brick with JCSU Football. Season three, currently filming, follows the Bulls’ rise but also their setbacks.

The first season of Brick x Brick closed with the disappointment of the Florida Beach Bowl. Season two ended with back-to-back losses that cost them a shot at the CIAA title and Division II playoffs. Saturday’s loss to Union fit that narrative: painful, but part of the growth required to build a championship program.

Union, meanwhile, showed what a finished product looks like. Allen’s efficiency, Parker’s composure, and a defense that stiffened when challenged gave the Panthers a victory that felt as much about experience as talent.

The Road Ahead

Virginia Union remains the CIAA’s measuring stick — and a team with national ambitions beyond the conference. JCSU, though stung, stays in the mix as one of Division II’s most intriguing stories. The Golden Bulls may not be there yet, but their championship is far from over, and every stumble adds to a docuseries — and a program — built on lessons in adversity.

Virginia Union is in the heart of the HBCU football season, and the Panthers are balancing lessons learned with high expectations. Coming off a game that went down to the wire, head coach Alvin Parker spoke candidly during the VUU coaches press conference about penalties, resilience, and the challenge of facing another undefeated opponent. For Virginia Union, the road ahead will be as much about discipline as it is about talent.

A Game of Inches

“I thought it was a well played ball game between, two good football teams, you know? So, and when you get that type of a game in that type of environment, you know, it’s going to come down to the last play, you know?” Parker said at the VUU coaches press conference. The Panthers traded scores with their opponent throughout the second half, but a late personal foul penalty shifted momentum at the worst possible moment. It was a bitter ending, but Parker refused to let his players forget the bigger picture.

Penalties Take Center Stage

The numbers told the story: 17 penalties against Virginia Union, the most Parker has ever seen in his coaching career. “We had 17 penalties on Saturday that that was the most I’ve had in my career in a game,” Parker admitted. “But I think we learn from it because it was something that we used as a teaching moment when we got back on Sunday.” For Virginia Union, the emphasis this week in practice is clear. The Panthers know their discipline will determine whether they can convert talent into championships in the HBCU landscape.

Resilience Defines the Panthers

Despite the mistakes, Virginia Union never quit. Down 14 in the fourth quarter, the Panthers fought back to tie the game twice. “You know, we got a lot of guys that are champions on this team that, you know, kind of know how to win ballgames,” Parker said. “Those guys still wanted to play. Those guys still want to fight.” It’s that mindset that keeps Virginia Union dangerous. The Panthers have shown they can climb out of holes — but avoiding them will be the next step.

Spotlight on Standout Players

Two Panthers earned CIAA honors for their performances: running back Curtis Allen and receiver Jeremiah Francis. Both seniors delivered when it mattered most. “Two great players for us, two seniors for us. So I’m glad those guys performed the way they did,” Parker said. Their recognition underscores how Virginia Union continues to develop playmakers capable of making noise across HBCU football.

Johnson C. Smith Looms Large

Next up is a major CIAA showdown against Johnson C. Smith, another undefeated team riding a hot start. Parker didn’t shy away from the challenge. “Another good football team another real good football team,” he said. “So, you know, it’s probably going to be the only in for a while. The one and only HBCU matchups where you going to see two top 25 HBCUs, you know, playing a game.” That’s the kind of clash that will define the season for Virginia Union — and for HBCU fans across the country.

Richmond Ready to Rally

With the Panthers finally returning home, Parker emphasized how meaningful it will be for the team and the city. “It’s not a lot of places you can kind of go in Richmond and not really know, you know, the brand of union football. And that’s something that that’s good,” Parker said. The Panthers know the Northside of Richmond will be ready. The community support, paired with national recognition on networks like ESPN+, makes this moment even bigger for Virginia Union football.

Virginia Union has already proven it has the talent to compete with anyone in HBCU football. The next step is cutting down on mistakes and seizing the opportunities ahead. As Parker reminded at the VUU coaches press conference: “You get what you emphasize, you know, so, you know, we got to make sure that that becomes something that that’s of importance to us.”

Circle the date. The CIAA is about to give us a heavyweight clash with national implications. Virginia Union University (VUU) and Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU)—two HBCU programs sitting inside the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 polls—are set to collide in a matchup that feels less like mid-September and more like late-November playoff football.

Poll Heat: Bulls Rising, Panthers Sliding

The latest AFCA Coaches Poll has Johnson C. Smith climbing to #21 after a 3-0 start, while Virginia Union tumbled to #22 after last week’s gut-punch loss. On the D2Football.com Top 25, Union sits higher at #15, but JCSU has crept in at #23—a clear sign that the Golden Bulls are officially on the national radar.

Translation: JCSU is trending up. VUU is trying to shake off a tough loss. And both need this win to stay in the national conversation.

Johnson C. Smith: Survive and Advance

JCSU isn’t winning pretty—but they’re winning. Saturday’s 21–17 escape at Elizabeth City State was a perfect example. Quarterback Kelvin Durham is quietly one of the most efficient arms in Division II, hitting nearly 70% of his throws and already racking up five touchdowns. The backfield duo of Bobby Smith and Antonio Crim has powered a ground game that averages almost 80 yards per contest.

And when it matters most? The Golden Bulls deliver. Their defense—allowing just 14 points per game—locked down ECSU late to keep the unbeaten run alive.

HBCU Top 25 VUU JCSU
Virginia Union: Reeling but Dangerous

Virginia Union’s loss in the Unity Classic still stings. Upstart Edward Waters snatched a 41–38 win with a walk-off field goal, and suddenly, the Panthers look mortal. But don’t get it twisted—this is still a Top 25 team with one of the CIAA’s most loaded rosters.

Curtis Allen is a monster running back, leading the league at 176 yards per game. Quarterback RJ Rosales has shown big-play potential with three early touchdown passes. And the offense as a whole? They’re hanging 41.5 points per game, tops in the CIAA.

The question isn’t if Union can score—it’s whether they can close.

Why This Game Hits Different

Last season, JCSU shocked Union in Charlotte. The upset became one of the most emotional episodes of Season 2 of HBCU Gameday’s Brick x Brick with JCSU Football docuseries. Season 3 cameras will roll again as these ranked rivals line it up under the lights in Richmond, VA.

It’s more than a matchup—it’s a Division II HBCU measuring stick. A win keeps you climbing in the polls and sets the tone for a possible playoff run. A loss? And suddenly you’re chasing the rest of the pack.

The Bottom Line

This is HBCU football at its best: ranked teams, passionate fanbases, and stakes that reach far beyond the conference conversation. JCSU wants to prove its rise isn’t a fluke. VUU wants to remind everyone that despite a close loss, they’re still the back-to-back CIAA champs and playoff game winners.

When these two step on the field, expect fireworks—and expect the polls to look very different come Monday.

Jacksonville, Fla. — Edward Waters flipped the script on HBCU football Saturday night. The Tigers stunned No. 13 Virginia Union, 41-38, in the inaugural Unity Classic, capped by freshman kicker Ryan Gagne’s 35-yard game-winner as time expired. The kick touched off a frenzy at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium and pushed EWU to 3-0 for the first time in program history.

Offense Delivers Knockout Punch

Quarterback Noah Bodden looked in control, throwing for 283 yards on 19-of-35 passing. He added a touchdown and, just as importantly, avoided sacks and turnovers against a physical Virginia Union front.

The Tigers’ ground game provided balance. Johntarrious Thomas bruised his way to 100 yards and a score, while Brady Tillman ripped off a 70-yard touchdown sprint down the sideline, stretching the lead to 28-17.

Through the air, Izaiah Jean-Baptiste was the difference-maker with 112 yards and two touchdowns, including a gadget-play strike from receiver Torey Morrison to break a 14-14 tie. Senior wideout Makai Lovett made three catches for 91 yards, none bigger than a 42-yard grab in the final seconds that set up Gagne’s winner.

Special Teams Swing Momentum

Special teams flipped the game late. Kieren Jackson took a kickoff 90 yards to the house, giving Edward Waters a 38-31 lead and energizing the home crowd. Gagne was perfect all night, hitting all five extra points and both field goals — the last one sending the Tigers into the record books.

Defense Stands Tall

The Tigers’ defense bent but didn’t break. Travis McNichols finished with five tackles, while Rodney Williams and Trevon French came up with key second-half stops. Jaylen Brown added a forced fumble to slow Virginia Union’s high-powered attack and buy time for the offense.

A Statement for EWU

The win didn’t just make history — it sent a message. Edward Waters, led by interim coach Brian Jenkins, knocked off a nationally ranked HBCU opponent in dramatic fashion.

“This is a historic night for Edward Waters University football and for our community,” Jenkins said. “Our players showed heart, resilience, and belief in one another. To win the inaugural Unity Classic in this fashion — it’s something our student-athletes and fans will remember forever.”

What’s Next

The Tigers now take their unbeaten run on the road in a matchup laced with storylines. Jenkins returns to his old stomping grounds when Edward Waters faces Bethune-Cookman University next Saturday. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. ET, with coverage live on HBCU GO.

The HBCU spotlight shines on Virginia Union and Edward Waters this weekend in a pivotal CIAA vs. SIACmatchup. Both Virginia Union and Edward Waters enter this contest knowing it could shape the story of their seasons, their playoff outlooks, and the national conversation in Black college football.

CIAA vs. SIAC Stakes

Whenever the CIAA and SIAC collide, it’s bigger than one game. Fans see it as a chance to compare two historic conferences that anchor HBCU football in the East and South. This matchup also carries NCAA Division II playoff weight. Out-of-conference wins against quality opponents often decide at-large bids in the super region standings. For Virginia Union, beating a surging SIAC team could strengthen their playoff résumé. For Edward Waters, knocking off a CIAA contender would boost their profile and show they belong in postseason talks.

What It Means for Virginia Union

Virginia Union has built its reputation on toughness, tradition, and consistency. But the Panthers also face pressure to prove they belong in the upper tier of HBCU football in 2025. This game doubles as an early playoff test. A win strengthens their résumé before CIAA play intensifies. A loss, however, would damage their at-large hopes and raise questions about their ability to handle physical, rising programs outside their league.

What It Means for Edward Waters

For Edward Waters, this is an opportunity to show the nation their early-season surge is real. The Tigers opened strong in SIAC play, but a non-conference victory over a CIAA powerhouse would mark a statement win. It would elevate their postseason profile in the regional standings and build legitimacy for a program still establishing itself as a consistent playoff contender.

Keys to the Game
  • Virginia Union must control the trenches and avoid turnovers.
  • Edward Waters has to finish red-zone drives and limit explosive plays.
  • Special teams could swing the game, especially in a matchup with playoff stakes.
  • Whichever side controls field position will gain the edge in what should be a tight contest.
Where to Watch

Fans can stream Virginia Union vs. Edward Waters live on ESPN+. Both schools will also provide live coverage through their athletics websites, including video and real-time stats. That makes this clash accessible for HBCU fans nationwide eager to see CIAA vs. SIAC bragging rights and playoff implications on the line.

What’s Next

After this matchup, Virginia Union returns home to face Johnson C. Smith on September 20, aiming to solidify CIAA control. Edward Waters travels to Daytona Beach to meet Bethune-Cookman, a test against an FCS program that will further sharpen their postseason profile.

Why It Matters to HBCU Fans

This game isn’t just about wins and losses. It’s about conferences and playoff credibility. When Virginia Union and Edward Waters collide, HBCU fans tune in to see which program strengthens its résumé for November. These matchups fuel debates, shape postseason projections, and remind us why HBCU football Saturdays matter.

Looking Ahead

Whether it’s Virginia Union asserting CIAA strength or Edward Waters claiming a breakthrough SIAC moment, this game will ripple through the DII playoff picture. Both programs will leave Jacksonville either with momentum toward the postseason or with questions to answer. Either way, the battle adds another layer to the rich story of HBCU football.

The 2025 HBCU football season opened with fireworks in Canton, Ohio, as Virginia Union dominated Miles College in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. The Panthers made the most of their national stage on NFL Network, storming to a 45–3 win that showcased why they are a top HBCU and CIAA contender.

Offensive Explosion Behind Curtis Allen

Senior running back Curtis Allen stole the show. He rumbled for 185 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a breathtaking 53-yard hurdle into the end zone. Allen not only powered Virginia Union’s ground game but also set the Classic’s single-game rushing record and walked away as the Offensive Player of the Game.

Quarterback RJ Rosales added balance, going 9-of-15 for 120 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 54 yards and another score. Senior QB Mark Wright connected with Ricky Key Jr. for a 35-yard TD before later hitting Keon Davis on a 48-yard strike. Freshman RB Raphael Tucker sealed the win with a 19-yard touchdown run in the final minute. In total, Virginia Union piled up 375 rushing yards and 556 total yards, dwarfing Miles’ 249.

Defense Sets the Tone

The Panthers’ defense looked every bit as fierce as advertised. They limited Miles College to just 50 rushing yards and forced five turnovers, including two interceptions. Junior defensive lineman Kamari Frederick earned Defensive Player of the Game honors for leading a relentless pass rush and shutting down the Bears’ offense.

Coach Parker’s “Play411” Message

After the game, head coach Dr. Alvin Parker emphasized the team’s identity and the pride of representing Virginia Union and HBCU football.
Our motto is Play411. So everything we do is based on that,” Parker said. “Anytime we get to show the world our brand, we’re going to take advantage of it. The way these guys played today, I’m extremely proud. I might not be as proud when I go back and watch the film, but I want to make sure we keep playing our level best, no matter where we are.”

Looking Ahead

With a commanding victory in the books, Virginia Union turns its focus to the HBCU Unity Classic against Edward Waters on September 13. The Panthers are chasing a historic CIAA three-peat, something they last achieved under Hall of Famer Willard Bailey in the early 1980s. For Miles College, the 45–3 loss is a tough opening lesson as they prepare for Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

Billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Robert F. Smith is coming to Virginia Union University, a leading HBCU in Richmond, Virginia. On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Smith will headline a powerful Fireside Chat exploring leadership, legacy, and economic justice.

The event will take place at 3:30 PM in the Living & Learning Center on campus. Attendees will hear directly from Smith as he shares insights from his new book, Lead Boldly: Seven Principles from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This visit marks a defining moment for Virginia Union and the broader HBCU community.

A Visionary Leader Making HBCU History

Robert F. Smith is the founder and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, one of the most successful investment firms in the world. His firm manages over $100 billion in assets, making Smith one of the most powerful Black businessmen in history.

What to Expect at the Fireside Chat

Smith’s talk will center around the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His new book, Lead Boldly, draws from seven principles found in King’s most powerful speeches, including:

  • “The Beloved Community”
  • “Two Americas”
  • The call for economic justice

At this HBCU event, Smith will reflect on how King’s messages have shaped his approach to business, leadership, and service. It’s not just about success—it’s about using success to uplift others.

Under the cold lights of December football, HBCU, Virginia Union did what no Panthers team had done before — win not one, but two NCAA playoff games. For head coach Dr. Alvin Parker, the celebration was short.

The moment the season ended, expectations shifted to.

“First time in my career I ever been picked number one,” Parker said. “I always had to go out there and earn it and win it. To be given it in the preseason is something different.”

This fall, Virginia Union isn’t chasing anyone. They’re the ones being chased — and they welcome it.

RJ Rosales Leads Virginia Union Offense in 2025 HBCU Season

Quarterback RJ Rosales isn’t new to this moment, but the moment means more now.

After an injury cut his 2024 campaign short, the veteran returns as the Panthers’ starting QB and emotional anchor.

“He’s like a coach on the field,” Parker said. “He pulls guys along with him. That’s what I expect from him this year.”

Rosales leads a quarterback group that includes veteran Mark Wright (2,200 yards, 21 TDs) and rising freshman Miles Derricott. Parker knows that in today’s game, depth at quarterback is everything.

Virginia Union’s RBU Tradition Powers Its CIAA Offense

Replacing CIAA stars like Isaac Anderson and J.L. Biles is no easy task — unless you’re a Panther.

“That room is going to be special,” Parker said.

Look for Curtis Allen (6+ yards per carry), Trevon Tinsley, and Ramone Brown to lead a running back unit that defines the Panthers’ physical identity. RBU is alive and well.

Virginia Union Wideouts Fuel HBCU Player Development Success

Virginia Union’s wide receiver pipeline is among the best in HBCU football. Parker has produced elite talent every season, from Charles Hall to RJ Vick (now at Wake Forest).

Ricky Key, Keon Davis, and Tartis are ready to carry the torch.

“It’s tough bringing a new one in every year,” Parker said. “But we’re ready for the challenge.”

Veteran Lines and Elite Special Teams Set Virginia Union Apart

The Panthers remain dominant in the trenches with three returning offensive line starters and impact transfers on defense.

Special teams might be the deepest in the CIAA. Brady Meyers, a two-time CIAA Special Teams Player of the Year, will return alongside Zaire Tartt, last year’s winner.

“We’ve had all the special teams players of the year over the last three seasons — and they’re all on our roster,” Parker said.

“Play for 11”: The Culture Driving HBCU Success at Virginia Union

The Panthers continue to evolve in the era of the transfer portal. But the mission will remain the same.

“Our mantra is play for 11,” Parker said. “You want to make sure that stays in place.”

Despite roster turnover, Virginia Union has built a foundation, not just a team. Freshmen, transfers, and seasoned leaders are all pulling in the same direction.

The Target Is on Their Back — and They Want It

Coach Parker’s record stands at 51–15. A 100-win milestone might be in sight someday, but the focus is laser-sharp right now.

“I want to start 1-0, then 2-0, then 3-0,” he said. “You earn your way back to Durham.”

Virginia Union isn’t just representing itself this season. They’re carrying the weight of HBCU pride, CIAA strength, and a program trying to prove its place on the national stage.

Virginia Union University is set to honor a stellar group of HBCU athletes this fall as the newest inductees into the Thomas “Tricky Tom” Harris Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2025 Hall of Fame class will be enshrined on Friday, September 19, and features eight outstanding individuals alongside the legendary 1992 men’s basketball team. This year’s inductees reflect the depth and diversity of Panther excellence, spanning the NFL, CFL, NCAA championships, military service, and deep contributions to school spirit.

Malcolm Barnwell

A standout wide receiver at VUU, Barnwell went on to play five seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, and Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders. His best professional season came in 1984 when he tallied 45 receptions for 851 yards and two touchdowns.

Carl Bland

Bland, a 1984 VUU graduate, also excelled as an NFL wide receiver with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers. His football journey extended north, where he won a Grey Cup championship with the Calgary Stampeders in 1992. Today, Bland serves as a pastor and school administrator in St. Louis.

Valerie Briggs

For over two decades, Briggs was the heartbeat of the VUU cheerleaders, famously known as the Rah Rahs. A Richmond native and Virginia State alumna, Briggs has been a pillar of Panther spirit and leadership, shaping the culture of support for VUU Athletics.

Ashlé Freeman

One of the most electrifying players in VUU women’s basketball history, Freeman is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,758 career points from 2011 to 2015. A two-time All-CIAA selection, she still holds the school record for most steals in a single game with 12.

Brian Gurley

A multi-sport athlete, Gurley shined in football and track and field from 2009 to 2012. He was an NCAA Indoor All-American, a CIAA 60-meter dash champion, and a key member of the All-CIAA 4×100 relay team. In 2012, he was named Virginia Union’s Male Athlete of the Year.

Maj. Gen. Mitchell Kilgo

Kilgo made his mark on the football field at VUU from 1985 to 1988 and has built a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, where he currently serves as Deputy Inspector General of the U.S. Army Inspector General Agency. His service and leadership span more than three decades.

Marvin and Janice Willingham

The Willinghams have been unwavering supporters of Panther Athletics. Marvin, a former VUU football player under Coach “Tricky Tom” Harris, credits both Harris and legendary administrator Henry Hucles for shaping his VUU experience. Together, Marvin and Janice have become fixtures in the VUU athletic community.

The 1992 Men’s Basketball Team: A Championship Legacy

The 1992 Virginia Union men’s basketball team holds a special place in Panther history. Coached by Hall of Famer Dave Robbins, the team captured both the CIAA championship and the NCAA Division II national title, finishing the season with an impressive 30-3 record.

This was the second of Robbins’ three national championships, and the 1992 squad remains one of the most celebrated teams ever to represent Virginia Union.

A Night of Celebration

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony on September 19 will be a moment to honor these extraordinary individuals and teams whose legacies continue to inspire the Panther community. Stay tuned for more details as Virginia Union prepares to celebrate its newest legends.

Major General Mitchell Kilgo has spent more than three decades serving his country with distinction in the US Army. The HBCU alumnus is now being recognized for his accomplishments on and off the field as he prepares to be inducted into the Virginia Union “Tricky Tom” Harris Athletic Hall of Fame.

From the Gridiron to the Pentagon

A native of Newport News, Virginia, Kilgo played football for the VUU Panthers from 1985 to 1988. His time on the field reflected the same discipline and leadership that would define his military career. Kilgo’s military journey, however, wasn’t part of his original plan. As a freshman, he accepted an ROTC scholarship as a practical backup.

“It was my Plan B,” he recalled. “I played football and knew if I couldn’t play for some reason, I needed an alternative plan to help me stay in school… it was not a lifelong ambition.”

But what started as a fallback quickly became a calling.

“I felt great about serving and fell in love with the people and the Army’s way of life,” Kilgo said. “I guess Plan B was in line with God’s plan for my life and not the alternative I was seeking.”

In 1988, Kilgo commissioned into the U.S. Army. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become the Deputy Inspector General of the U.S. Army Inspector General Agency, retiring in 2022. The role placed him at the heart of military accountability and oversight.

A Career of Service and Excellence

Kilgo’s military résumé is as decorated as it is diverse. Over the span of his career, he has commanded at every level, held key operational roles, and earned multiple advanced degrees in pursuit of professional excellence. His leadership has impacted global operations, from cybersecurity initiatives to logistical command support across the Department of Defense.

Honoring an HBCU Legacy

The induction into the Hall of Fame at his HBCU is more than a personal achievement. It is a recognition of the enduring impact of his time at an HBCU on his life and career. For Kilgo, the lessons learned on the football field in the shadow of Richmond’s Lombardy Street were foundational.

“Congratulations to all on your induction into the Virginia Union ‘Tricky Tom’ Harris Athletic Hall of Fame,” said Joe Taylor, VUU Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Community Wellness. “You are joining an elite, distinguished group of extraordinary individuals. Your induction is a result of strong character, commitment, and dedication to personal growth and unselfish support of Virginia Union University. All of you embody the championship spirit of Tricky Tom Harris in strengthening the brand of our beloved university.”

A Testament to HBCU Impact

Kilgo’s story is emblematic of the pathways that HBCU institutions continue to provide for Black leaders. His journey from student-athlete to Major General underscores the role that VUU—and the broader HBCU community—play in producing leaders of consequence.

As Major General Mitchell Kilgo takes his place in the Hall of Fame. His career stands as a testament to the powerful intersection of service, scholarship, and sport that defines the HBCU experience.

For the first time, Edward Waters University (EWU) of the SIAC and Virginia Union University (VUU) of the CIAA will face off in the inaugural Unity Classic in Jacksonville, FL on Sept. 13. The HBCU football Classic comes with a full slate of ancillary activities and promises to deliver everything from a Greek Step Show to a Battle of the Bands.

VUU Dominance

While VUU is coming off one of the best seasons in program history, EWU looks to rebound and challenge for the SIAC crown. This early interconference game could serve as a barometer for the two teams. Will CIAA Coach of the Year Alvin Parker keep things rolling in 2025? He was named earlier this year to attend both the NFL’s Eighth Annual Quarterback Summit and the NFL’s Ozzie Newsome General Manager Forum. He has the Panthers rolling and seems poised to be even stronger this season.

EWU Rebuild

EWU is looking to rebuild. Head coach Toriano Morgan has shown the ability to put the Tigers in a position to win, and he seems optimistic about this season. Just last week, Morgan added FAMU quarterback Transfer DJ Boney to the squad. The dual-threat quarterback could be the difference-maker in getting EWU to the next level.

The Unity Classic will be a key game in evaluating the potential of both squads’ seasons. The Unity Classic is scheduled from Sept. 11-13 on the campus of EWU. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church of Tallahassee sponsors the game and will be broadcast nationally. HBCU Gameday is a co-sponsor of the Unity Classic.

The Unity Classic is the brainchild of EWU Trustee the Rev. Dr. RB Holmes Jr. Holmes has also served as a trustee at another HBCU, Florida A&M. His vision to bring the classic to Jacksonville stems from a broader vision.

“There are great men and women who have told us it’s in our hands to make this a better place and a better country, and most importantly to save and strengthen HBCUs,” Holmes said. “We’re bringing together for the first time in the history of this city, a classic that is speaking directly to the significance of HBCUs. We have two of the finest universities on planet Earth, the Virginia Union University and Edward Waters University. My brothers and sisters, this is going to be magic.”

HBCU women’s basketball is gaining another veteran leader. Virginia Union University has named Alico Dunk as the 10th head coach in the history of its program. Dunk, a longtime presence in HBCU athletics, replaces Tierra Terry, who took the Winston-Salem State job in April.

The university will introduce Dunk at a press conference on Friday, June 13, at 12:00 p.m. The event will be held at Barco-Stevens Hall on Virginia Union’s campus in Richmond, Virginia.

Dunk brings more than 20 years of coaching experience at HBCUs. He most recently spent eight seasons as the head coach at Stillman College. In 2025, he led the Lady Tigers to a 26-6 record, the best in school history. That season included an HBCU Athletic Conference regular-season title and the school’s first win in the NAIA National Tournament. Dunk won 112 games at Stillman—more than any women’s coach there in the past 40 years.

Before that, he coached the women’s team at Elizabeth City State University. Over five seasons, he led the Lady Vikings to an 83-56 record. They won two CIAA Northern Division titles during his tenure. In 2013, he was named CIAA Coach of the Year after a 24-4 season and a 15-1 mark in league play.

Dunk also coached the ECSU men’s team and served as an assistant during their 2007 CIAA Championship run.

A native of Ayden, North Carolina, Dunk was a standout in football and basketball at Ayden-Grifton High School. He began his college career at Tennessee, then transferred to East Carolina University. He was a two-year captain at ECU and earned a degree in Exercise and Sports Science in 1999.

After graduation, he taught and coached high school basketball before playing professionally in Asia. He later earned a master’s degree in Sports Management from Virginia State University.

[/Dunk’s return to the CIAA adds another seasoned voice to HBCU women’s basketball.

HBCU head football coach and associate athletic director at Virginia Union University, Dr. Alvin Parker, is set to return to his roots in Washington, D.C., to deliver the commencement address at Ballou High School—his alma mater in Southeast D.C.

A Full-Circle Moment for an HBCU Leader

This event marks a full-circle moment for the veteran HBCU coach. Parker’s leadership at Virginia Union University has elevated the Panthers to the top of the CIAA, earning back-to-back championships in 2023 and 2024. Now, he will step off the football field and onto the graduation stage to inspire the Class of 2025.

Parker’s return to Ballou High School is more than symbolic. It’s a homecoming to the very place where his academic and athletic journey began. His story reflects the life-changing opportunities that HBCUs provide for students who are committed to growth, excellence, and purpose.

Transforming a Football Program and Shaping Young Lives

Since taking over the Virginia Union football program in 2018, Dr. Parker has recorded more than 50 wins. Under his guidance, the team has become a dominant force in HBCU football. His success has not gone unnoticed—he was recently named Black College Football Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year.

More than wins and titles, Parker’s work highlights the broader mission of HBCUs: to develop leaders on and off the field. His journey from a Ballou graduate to a nationally recognized head coach at an HBCU exemplifies this mission in action.

Honoring Ballou’s Legacy

Ballou High School has long been recognized for nurturing talent beyond athletics. Notable alumni include comedian Earthquake and former NFL player Marvin Austin. Dr. Parker’s upcoming address adds to the school’s legacy of excellence and impact.

The Ballou High School commencement ceremony featuring Dr. Alvin Parker is scheduled for next week. Local families, students, and supporters of both Ballou and Virginia Union are expected to attend and celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2025.

Despite a record-shattering collegiate career, Virginia Union star Jada Byers was not selected in the NFL Draft nor signed by any NFL teams. However, the HBCU standout is getting a professional opportunity—he is signing with the UFL’s Memphis Showboats, according to a report from Steve Wyche of NFL Network.

Byers, widely regarded as a generational talent at running back in HBCU football history, was named the 2024 Deacon Jones Award winner, an honor given to the top player in HBCU football. He also earned Black College Football Hall of Fame Player of the Year and CIAA Offensive Player of the Year accolades.

The Virginia Union senior capped off his remarkable collegiate career as the school’s all-time leading rusher. Nationally, he ranks second all-time in both CIAA and HBCU football history with 2,061 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns in the 2024 season alone. His legendary status was cemented with a record-breaking performance against Bowie State on October 26, where he rushed for 324 yards and six touchdowns, including a stunning 75-yard score.

Though Byers was overlooked by the NFL, his signing with the UFL offers him a platform to showcase his talent and continue his football journey. His combination of vision, speed, and durability makes him a dangerous weapon out of the backfield, and the Memphis Showboats may have landed one of the biggest steals in alternative professional football.

Byers’ journey reflects the resilience often required of HBCU athletes striving for recognition at the professional level. With the UFL as his new stage, he’ll look to prove that his name belongs among the best—regardless of league.

Jacksonville, FL – In HBCU Football, nothing is more exciting than classic football games. The Bayou Classic, Magic City Classic, and Florida Classic have been staples in black culture for decades. There are even more classic games that attract thousands to their host city for a weekend of festivities. They often bring not only football games, but a host of ancillary events that attract fans from all walks of life. Jacksonville, FL, will be the site of the Unity Classic, which debuts on September 13 and features the Virginia Union University Panthers (VUU) and the Edward Waters University Tigers (EWU).

This is an early-season interconference rivalry between the two HBCU Division II conferences, the SIAC and the CIAA. The introductory press conference was held in the Edward Waters gymnasium on April 25, with several key figures in attendance.

The Unity Classic is the brainchild of EWU Trustee the Rev. Dr. RB Holmes Jr. Holmes has also served as a trustee at Florida A&M, another HBCU. His vision to bring the classic to Jacksonville comes from a bigger vision.

On the same day that Travis Hunter was appearing in Jacksonville for the first time since being drafted as the No.2 overall pick, the press conference featured the athletic directors and head coaches of both teams as well as Dr. A. Zachary Faison, President and CEO of Edward Waters University.

“Let me just say this, what an awe-inspiring day this is not just for Edward Waters University and Virginia Union University, but for all who understand and really appreciate the beauty, brilliance, and boundless legacy of black higher education excellence,” Faison said. “I am absolutely elated to be here today as we officially announce the inaugural Unity Football Classic.”

Dr. Linda Groomes, chairwoman of the Unity Classic committee, laid out the details of the events surrounding the classic game. Groomes expressed the fact that while it is a football contest at the center of the weekend, it must emphasize the coming together of the HBCUs and the community.

“Even though we will have a friendly competition between two of the nation’s oldest historically black universities namely Virginia Union, which was founded in 1865, and Jacksonville’s own Edward Waters University found in 1866, when the rubber meets the road, we are striving and maintaining unity. We are facing a time of uncertainty at our educational institutions and frankly every aspect of our lives,” Groomes said. “All one must do is to look at the news and notice the threat of federal funding being taken away from large universities like Princeton and Harvard. All our HBCUs, if not already, may soon feel the effect of the loss of funding.”

“One of the other objectives of this classic is to encourage academic excellence by awarding scholarships from the proceeds of this event to deserving at the two universities,” she said. “We believe when one student hurts because he or she cannot pay their tuition all students hurt when one student can’t afford to buy books, it impacts all students.”

The Unity Classic game is set for Saturday. Sept. 13 with a 4:00 PM kickoff at the Glover Community Field and Stadium on the campus of EWU. There is a president’s reception, a kickoff luncheon, a battle of the bands, a pregame tailgate, and a gospel concert all associated with the inaugural unity classic.

HBCU Gameday is one of the inaugural partners of the Unity Classic.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Tierra Terry had her own personal HBCU homecoming at Winston-Salem State on Tuesday evening. Terry, a WSSU alumna, former player, and assistant coach, returned to her alma mater to take over the program that helped shape and mold her as the head coach.

In a press conference filled with pride and emotion, Terry spoke candidly about what it means to come home.

“I haven’t stopped smiling since I got the good news,” she said. “This place is just near and dear to my heart… Had it not been for Winston, who knows if I would have continued my college basketball career?” Terry added, “Winston has changed my life. So how can you not smile about returning to the place that changed your life?”

Terry’s HBCU legacy is strong. After her playing career at WSSU, she earned a master’s in psychology and began a coaching journey that included stops at Western Carolina, William & Mary, and most recently, a successful run at Virginia Union University. There, she led the Lady Panthers to 60 wins over five seasons, including a 21-9 campaign in 2023-24. Her coaching resume includes developing All-CIAA performers, academic standouts, and an HBCU All-Star Game MVP.

Her success at another HBCU only deepened her desire to return to Winston-Salem.

“It was always a desire,” Terry said. “As a graduate, it’s just somewhere that I’ve always aspired to be. But I just… timing is everything. And the plan is everything.”

That plan brought her back to WSSU, where she learned what it means to grind, compete, and represent her HBCU. Chancellor Bonita Brown emphasized the importance of Terry’s return and what it represents for the program and the institution.

“I was looking for someone who literally said the word ‘students’ first,” Chancellor Brown said. “The next thing I wanted to hear them say was ‘win,’ because that’s what we’re here for.”

Terry embodies both values, having credited her father—a former coach—and her experiences at WSSU for shaping her approach to coaching. “He inspired me so much that I decided I wanted to change lives in the same way,” she said of her father. “We might be crazy for choosing this profession some days, but it is our calling.”

Throughout the press conference, she was grateful for the belief placed in her, especially by WSSU Athletic Director Etienne Thomas.

“I appreciate you guys for believing in me… You saw a vision in me that sometimes I may not have seen in myself.”

Her commitment to HBCUs goes beyond wins and losses. She passionately reminded those in attendance of how underestimated Black colleges still are in broader college athletics.

“People go, ‘Oh, you’re going to Winston,’ and they don’t really know what we produced… They don’t know how valuable HBCUs are in our community.”

Now back in red and white, Terry has big plans for the Rams. She made it clear that her expectations are high—and that the culture of excellence will be foundational.

“When you are raised by champions, you aspire to be a champion yourself,” she said. “You start surrounding yourself with championship mentality. I believe the people around me in Winston have that same mentality, and we are going to go after it.”

As for the current roster and future recruits, Terry has her eyes wide open as the transfer portal deadline nears.

“Our current athletes seem to be excited and fired up about winning a championship,” she said. “We’re going to work to get what we need, and we’ll see moving from there.”

In returning home, Terry joins a growing list of WSSU alumni who have come back to lead and mentor. Current men’s basketball coach Corey Thompson is an alumnus as is Terry’s predecessor, L’Tona Lamonte.

“Coach Lamonte has been a phenomenal person,” Terry said. “She’s been a great mentor to me as well, just being a Ram herself.”

With deep institutional knowledge, a proven coaching pedigree, and the unshakable belief that HBCUs can be places of both tradition and transformation, Tierra Terry is poised to write the next great chapter of WSSU women’s basketball.

“I get to wear my red again. I can say ‘Ramily’ and not have to hide who I am,” Terry beamed. “As we say in our alma mater: ‘Exalting, we praise thy name, O Winston-Salem State University.’ I’m looking so forward to leading this program.”

“We are grateful to the commissioners and teams of the CIAA and SIAC for their commitment to playing in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic game,” said Jim Porter, president & CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “The format of bringing in the defending conference champions sets up the ‘Clash at The Classic’ as an entertaining, well-matched game annually, with top-tier players representing their historic universities.”

HBCU Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic

Virginia Union head coach Alvin Parker and the Panthers are making their second appearance in Canton; they defeated Morehouse College 45-13 in the 2023 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. In 2024, the Panthers posted a 10-4 record that included two wins in the Division II NCAA tournament before falling to the eventual national runner-up Valdosta State Blazers in the quarterfinal round.

The 2025 “Clash at The Classic” will serve as Miles head coach Chris Goode’s first game at the helm of the Golden Bears. The program finished a historic 2024 season with a 10-3 record that included school records for most victories, most consecutive wins in a single year (10), and its first NCAA Division II playoff victory. The Golden Bears’ season also ended at the hands of Valdosta State, one week before the Blazers ousted Virginia Union.

Fans can purchase their seats now to see the game and energizing band performances featuring the Virginia Union Ambassadors of Sound Marching Band and the Miles College Purple Marching Machine. Tickets, starting at $40, are available here.

Jada Byers has been named the recipient of the prestigious Deacon Jones Award, recognizing him as the top player in HBCU football for the 2024 season. The Virginia Union star put together a historic campaign, solidifying his place as one of the greatest running backs in HBCU history.

Byers finished his career as Virginia Union’s all-time leading rusher, while also ranking second all-time in CIAA and HBCU history, trailing only Winston-Salem State legend Richard Huntley. His 2024 season was nothing short of dominant, as he rushed for 2,061 yards and 27 touchdowns, leading Virginia Union to another strong campaign. His performance was highlighted by a record-setting game against Bowie State on October 26, where he exploded for 324 rushing yards and six touchdowns, including a 75-yard scoring run.

The Deacon Jones Award is given annually to the top HBCU football player, and Byers’ resume left no doubt he was deserving. In addition to his gaudy rushing totals, he contributed in the passing game with 154 receiving yards and was a factor in special teams with 180 punt return yards. His versatility and game-breaking ability made him a nightmare for opposing defenses throughout the season.

Byers is set to compete in the HBCU Legacy Bowl as he looks to break into the pros.

Jada Byers’ impact on the field and in the record books ensures his name will be mentioned among the all-time greats. With the Deacon Jones Award now in his trophy case, his legacy as one of the most dominant players in HBCU football history is firmly established.

One of the top offensive coordinators in HBCU football, Virginia Union’s Luke Bengtson, is headed for the FCS level.

Bengston is set to join the South Dakota football staff as a wide receivers coach, according to Football Scoop.

Bengston spent three years at the CIAA HBCU, helping the team make the Division II playoffs in each season — including back-to-back CIAA championships.

Luke Bengston, HBCU football, Virginia Union

In his first season at Virginia Union in 2022, he served as quarterbacks coach. The offense averaged 44 points per game in the regular season which was first in the CIAA and third nationally. The quarterbacks led the CIAA in touchdown passes, quarterback rating (#17 Nationally), and third-down conversion rating (#16 Nationally. They ranked second in the CIAA in completion percentage and senior quarterback Jahkari Grant accepted an invite to play in the HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans as well as was named MVP of the Virginia State game. Luke was selected to coach in the prestigious HBCU Legacy Bowl where he was the ofensive coordinator and coached the quarterbacks.

The offense put up 40 points per game the following season as he took over the offense, leading the CIAA and ranking ninth in the nation. It had the top redone offense, rushing offense and ran for the most rushing touchdowns in the country.

The HBCU squad picked up where it left off in 2024, averaging just over 40 points per game once again, while averaging 458.4 yards per game as it won back-to-back titles and won the first two playoff games in school history.

Now Bengston will be taking his talents to the FCS.

William Davis, a standout safety from Virginia Union, has transferred to West Virginia University, making the leap from HBCU football to the FBS Power 4. The South Boston, Virginia native brings a proven track record of production and versatility to the Mountaineers’ secondary.

Davis, a 5-foot-10, 195-pound junior, excelled during his time at Virginia Union, an HBCU competing in Division II football. Over his two seasons as a starter for the Panthers, Davis amassed 115 tackles, 25 for loss, nine interceptions, four sacks, and two forced fumbles. In 2024, he earned all-conference honors with 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and a sack, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top defenders in the CIAA.

On December 21, 2024, Davis entered the NCAA transfer portal and quickly drew interest from FBS programs. He took an official visit to West Virginia on January 10, 2025, and committed to the Mountaineers shortly afterward. Davis is part of a transfer class aimed at bolstering depth in the secondary. He joins three other safeties as part of the 2025 recruiting cycle, giving the Mountaineers 14 scholarship players at the position. However, only two have significant game experience, leaving room for Davis to make an immediate impact.

Davis’s ability to play multiple roles in the secondary adds valuable flexibility to the West Virginia University defense. Known for his tackling and disruption behind the line of scrimmage, he is expected to compete for playing time in his final collegiate season at a Power 4 school, the biggest stage in college football.

The transfer marks a significant step for Davis, transitioning from HBCU football at Virginia Union to the national stage of the FBS. His journey highlights the talent pipeline between HBCUs and larger programs, showcasing the impact of players like Davis on both levels of college football.

Two former HBCU wide receivers are taking their talents to the ACC via Wake Forest.

Reginald Vick Jr. and Sterling Berkhalter both committed to Wake Forest on Friday.

Berkhalter started his career at North Carolina A&T, playing for the HBCU during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He caught 35 passes for 486 yards and two scores in two seasons there before hitting the transfer portal.

The 6’4, 185 pound Cincinnati, OH native eventually landed on his hometown squad. He saw little playing time his first season at the FBS level, appearing in two games with no catches before redshirting. He saw his playing time increase the past season, catching 11 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown.

Sterling Berkhalter, Wake Forest, HBCU

He hit the portal following the season once again, and has committed to the ACC team program.

Reginald “RJ” Vick Jr. is a 6’3, 185 yard receiver from Wendell, NC. He spent the last three years at Virginia Union University, a Division II HBCU in the CIAA. He didn’t play in 2022, and caught just nine passes as a redshirt freshman in 2023 before exploding in 2024.

Vick caught 48 passes for 1,164 yards — an average of 24.25 yards per catch — for 12 touchdowns. He helped VUU win back-to-back CIAA titles and advance to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals.

Now both of these players who started their careers as gems for HBCUs — one in Division II and one in the FCS — will head to Winston-Salem to try to help Wake Forest climb out of the ACC basement.

Virginia Union University’s Jada Byers is no ordinary athlete. With his sights set on the NFL, Byers reflects on the remarkable journey that took him from his hometown to breaking records at an HBCU, all while staying humble and focused on the future.

“I took three days of rest after the season,” Byers said, already preparing to take the next step toward the NFL. His drive to succeed is evident, fueled by an impressive HBCU football career where he set the Panthers’ all-time record for rushing yards (5,311) and touchdowns (70). This season alone, he shattered the single-game record with an eye-popping 324 rushing yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.

Despite these accomplishments, Byers remains grounded. “To leave a legacy like that feels great, but it’s really not about me,” he said. “It’s about the kids looking up to me and believing they can be great at any level.”

Faith has been a cornerstone of Byers’ life and career. “Every day, I wake up and thank God,” he shared. “Everything I’ve been through—good and bad—is part of His plan. Even this interview is part of my journey.”

HBCU NFL Virginia Union

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. Byers opened up about his daughter’s illness during his time in HBCU football, an experience that strengthened his resolve. “If she can push through, so can I. If I gave up, it felt like I’d be letting her down,” he said. “That connection we have motivates me every day.”

Much of Byers’ success can be attributed to the mentorship and support he received at Virginia Union. He spoke highly of the guidance he received from his coaches, including head coach Alvin Parker and running backs coach Diego Ryland. “Coach Parker gave me the opportunity to shine, and I ran with it,” he said. “Coach Ryland taught me how to be a man. I could call him anytime—3 a.m., midnight—and he’d be there to talk.”

When asked about his mindset heading into NFL preparation, Byers kept it simple. “Just be you,” he said. “Don’t try to change yourself for anyone. If they give me a chance, I’ll give them everything I’ve got.”

Byers also highlighted the role his community played in shaping him. “I want to give my community something because they gave me so much,” he said. “When I come back home, it’s special. The kids look up to me, and I want to make sure I’m giving them hope.”

As he prepares for the next chapter, Byers draws inspiration from his family, particularly his daughter. “My daughter motivates me every day,” he said. “I want her to see that her dad worked hard and never gave up.”

Jada Byers is more than just a record-breaking running back. He’s a testament to perseverance, humility, and faith. With his NFL dreams within reach, Byers’ story is one of resilience and inspiration—a legacy that will continue to motivate those who follow in his footsteps. “Just be you,” he repeated. “Trust the process and never stop working.”

Virginia Union University, a Division II HBCU that just made an impressive run in the playoffs, is being stared down with change.

Multiple sources indicate that head coach Dr. Alvin Parker is drawing serious interest from multiple job openings at FCS HBCUs. Meanwhile, several key players have entered the transfer portal since the program bowed out of the playoffs in the third round against national runner-up Valdosta State.

Parker, a Virginia Union alumnus, has compiled a 50-17 record in six seasons as a head coach. He has never finished with a record below 6-4, and his team has made the Division II playoffs in each of the last three seasons. VUU has gone 20-6 in the past two seasons, winning the CIAA in both seasons. The 2024 season saw VUU come up with playoff wins on the road against Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne.

William Davis
Virginia Union defensive back William Davis has hit the transfer portal.

There are now three HBCU openings at the FCS level — Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley of the SWAC and Delaware State University of the MEAC. Sources indicate Alabama A&M and Delaware State have interest in Parker.

If Parker does return to Virginia Union next season, it will likely be without the core of the program. Running back Jada Byers, VUU’s all-time leading rusher, has exhausted his eligibility and is headed to the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, several of his talented teammates like wide receiver Reginald Vick Jr. and defensive back William Davis have hit the transfer portal in recent days and are drawing interest at some of the highest levels of football.

There is no question Virginia Union will feature new names next season. The question is who will be the head coach at the Richmond HBCU next fall.

In what could be the biggest win of the HBCU basketball season, the Virginia Union University men’s basketball team defeated Fairmont State University, ranked seventh in the nation, 76-60 on Wednesday, December 18, at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Va.

VUU‘s DJ Mitchell led the way by scoring 28 points while teammate Malachi Dark added 15 points in the win.

Virginia Union’s Che Evans scored 10 points and Jonathan King led the Panthers on the boards with nine rebounds.

“This was a huge win for our team and the program,” said VUU Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jay Butler. “Anytime you can beat the #7 team in the country on our home court right before the Christmas break was a very good win. I was very proud of DJ Mitchell today. He did a great job scoring the ball on all three levels. I was happy to get Malachi Dark back from being out the last couple games. He gives us a much needed low post presence.”

Virginia Union (6-7) scored the game’s opening basket but Fairmont State (9-1) responded with a 14-1 run. The Panthers answered with 14 straight points to take the lead by three (17-14) with 9:02 left in the first half.

Fairmont State struggled to get a rhythm on offense while Virginia Union expanded upon its lead with the next eight points to lead 32-23 with 1:33 remaining. The HBCU added four more points to their total and led by 13 (36-23) going to halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, the Falcons quickly got things going on the offensive end with seven consecutive points. VUU responded with a 12-0 run to lead 48-30 just over five minutes into the second half.

The Falcons tried to cut into the deficit but time was not on their side as the final horn sounded. FSU fell by the final score of 76-60.

Virginia Union will now travel to Staten Island, N.Y., to face the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island at 7:00 p.m. On Thursday, January 2, 2025.

WWE superstar Michin brought the energy and her HBCU roots to WWE’s Saturday Night Main Event. The Virginia Union University (VUU) alum stepped into the spotlight for a historic matchup against Chelsea Green, battling to become the first-ever Women’s United States Champion.

Michin entered in style, rocking a Virginia Union University Varsity jacket. It was more than just a fashion statement—it was a proud shoutout to the HBCU that helped shape her athletic career and identity.

Before Michin made waves in WWE, she was a volleyball standout at Virginia Union University. In a 2018 interview with WWE.com, Michin opened up about how her time at the HBCU prepared her for success.

“I wanted to earn a college volleyball scholarship because my academics wouldn’t be enough to qualify entry to the colleges I wanted,” Michin said. “My dad sent tapes to Virginia Union University, and they gave me a full scholarship for two years.”

Michin played at VUU for two years before transferring to Marymount University. But her time at Virginia Union left a lasting impact. Representing her alma mater on WWE’s global stage was her way of showing that HBCU pride is always with her.

Even though Michin didn’t walk away as champion her presence at Saturday Night Main Event was historic. She proudly repped her HBCU roots in front of a national audience, and her journey is already inspiring the next generation of HBCU athletes.

Howard University track star Darci Khan, a star hurdler with a knack for the spotlight, is already eyeing WWE as her next move. Khan’s speed and athleticism on the track could easily translate to the wrestling ring. She’s part of a growing wave of HBCU athletes looking to make their mark in sports entertainment.

Michin continues to be a force in WWE, proving that talent from HBCUs can shine on the world’s biggest stages. Fans can catch her every Friday night on WWE SmackDown, airing on USA Network at 8 PM EST/7 PM CST.

And if black college athletes like Darci Khan joins the mix, the future of HBCU representation in WWE looks brighter than ever. Stay tuned—Michin may have just paved the way for the next big star.

Virginia Union’s remarkable season ended with a tough 49-14 loss to top-ranked Valdosta State in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The game also marked the final career game for Jada Byers, one of the most electric running backs in recent memory for HBCU football. The game was held at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium and showcased Valdosta State’s high-powered offense and smothering defense, which were too much for the Panthers to overcome.

The game started competitively, with Virginia Union’s defense forcing Valdosta State to grind out their opening scoring drive. However, Valdosta State struck first with an 8-yard touchdown run by Alfonso Franklin, who would be a key figure throughout the game.

Virginia Union responded in the second quarter with an impressive 18-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 7-yard touchdown run from Jada Byers. This narrowed the gap to 14-7, but Valdosta State’s offense erupted with three unanswered touchdowns before halftime, including two long scoring strikes from quarterback Sammy Edwards to Rodney Bullard. The Blazers carried a commanding 28-7 lead into the break.

In the second half, Valdosta State continued to dominate, with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Curry and another long strike to Bullard putting the game out of reach. Virginia Union added a late touchdown pass from R.J. Rosales to Reginald Vick Jr., but it was too little, too late.

    Notable Performances

    • Jada Byers (Virginia Union): The top HBCU running back this season carried the ball 22 times for 109 yards and a touchdown.
    • R.J. Rosales (Virginia Union): The quarterback threw for 88 yards and a touchdown while avoiding turnovers.
    • Virginia Union Defense: Shamar Graham led the effort with 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss.
    • Sammy Edwards (Valdosta State): The quarterback was exceptional, throwing for 302 yards and four touchdowns, connecting frequently with Rodney Bullard, who hauled in three touchdowns on five receptions for 158 yards.
    • Alfonso Franklin (Valdosta State): Balanced the Blazers’ attack with 64 rushing yards and two scores.

    An HBCU season to remember

Despite the loss, Virginia Union’s 10-3 season reflects a strong campaign which included two NCAA playoff victories. Jada Byers finishes his career as the all-time leading rusher in Virginia Union history, a mark he surpassed earlier this season. Coach Alvin Parker’s squad displayed flashes of brilliance but could not sustain momentum against the nation’s top team. Valdosta State moves forward as a clear championship favorite, showcasing why they hold the No. 1 ranking.

HBCU football continues to make waves on the national stage, as standout players from historically Black colleges and universities earned top honors in the NCAA Division II Super Region Two awards for 2024. Headlining the accolades is Jada Byers, Virginia Union University’s record-breaking running back, who was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Byers’ historic season cemented his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear a Virginia Union uniform. Already VUU’s all-time leading rusher with 5,965 career yards and 77 touchdowns, Byers elevated his game even further in 2024. He rushed for 1,947 yards, breaking his own school record, and ranked second nationally in both rushing yards and touchdowns (26). His explosive performances propelled Virginia Union to its second CIAA championship appearance in three years and secured his spot as one of eight finalists for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy. Byers’ dominance reflects the rich tradition of HBCU excellence in athletics, as he shattered expectations and etched his name in both school and conference history.

The All-Super Region Two First Team also featured several other HBCU stars, highlighting the depth of talent across these programs. From Virginia State, offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor earned a spot for his role in anchoring one of the conference’s most efficient offenses. Meanwhile, Clark Atlanta University wide receiver Armonte Harris was recognized for his dynamic ability to stretch the field, showcasing why he is one of the top receivers in the SIAC. Joining him was Brevin Caldwell of Johnson C. Smith University.

Summary: Virginia Union showcased exceptional prowess on both offense and defense, leading the CIAA. This reinforced its status as a powerhouse among HBCU football programs.

    • Virginia State’s only victory over a team with a winning record was against Benedict, limiting their impact against top-tier opponents.

Summary: Virginia State showed statistical strength. However, they fell short in securing wins against leading teams within the CIAA. This impacted their overall grade. This happened despite their perfect conference record adjusted by CIAA rules.

Virginia Union University (VUU) made HBCU football history of its own by defeating #17 Wingate 34-31 in overtime, earning their first-ever NCAA playoff win and snapping Wingate’s remarkable 20-game winning streak against HBCU teams that dates back to 2012. The Panthers’ resilience and clutch play secured the historic victory.

Wingate came into the matchup with one of the strongest defenses in Division II football, allowing just 10 points per game and dominating opponents with 27 sacks this season. Their streak of dominance against HBCU teams, including a playoff win over Virginia Union in 2022, added extra intensity to the game. Despite the challenge, Virginia Union rose to the occasion.

Jada Byers led Virginia Union’s offense, rushing for 92 yards on 23 carries. Mark Wright started at quarterback, passing for 202 yards and two touchdowns, including a 44-yard strike to Regi Vick Jr., who finished with 92 yards on four catches. Late in the game, RJ Rosales stepped in and sealed the victory with an 18-yard touchdown run in overtime.

Wingate showcased its offensive firepower with quarterback Brooks Bentley throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns. Evan McCray was his top target, catching four passes for 113 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown. Running back Corey Siemer added 90 rushing yards and a touchdown, keeping the Bulldogs competitive.

    HBCU Virginia Union

Virginia Union’s defense played a pivotal role in the upset, with Jayden Earley grabbing a critical interception late in the game. The Panthers capitalized on key opportunities, showing poise against Wingate’s elite defense. Brady Myers added consistency with his kicking, converting all four extra points.

The decisive moment came in overtime. After holding Wingate to a field goal, Rosales led Virginia Union to the game-winning touchdown, ending Wingate’s dominance over HBCU programs. This monumental win avenged Virginia Union’s 2022 playoff loss to Wingate and sent shockwaves through Division II football.

The victory marked a turning point for Virginia Union, positioning them as a powerhouse among HBCU programs and breaking through against a team long seen as an obstacle. The Panthers’ combination of grit, defense, and execution delivered a performance to remember.

With this milestone win, Virginia Union not only ended Wingate’s HBCU winning streak but also established themselves as a formidable contender in postseason play. The game underscored the growing strength of HBCU football and showcased Virginia Union’s rise on the national stage.

The NCAA Division II playoffs will feature a compelling first-round matchup between Wingate University (9-1) and HBCU Virginia Union University (8-3). This game is a rematch of the 2022 playoff meeting, where Wingate emerged victorious over Virginia Union in Richmond. The Bulldogs have a remarkable 20-game winning streak against HBCUs, a streak that began in 2012. Here’s a detailed breakdown of both teams this season.

    Virginia Union Panthers

    Key Stats (2024):

    • Record: 8-3 (6-1 CIAA)
    • Scoring Offense: 45.2 points per game
    • Scoring Defense: 15.6 points allowed per game
    • Rushing Offense: 245.8 yards per game (6.6 yards per carry)
    • Passing Offense: 246 yards per game (65.2% completion, 24 TDs, 7 INTs)
    • Total Offense: 490.7 yards per game
    • Top Performer: RB Jada Byers, 1,497 rushing yards (7.0 YPC), 23 rushing touchdowns

The Panthers are explosive on offense, with Jada Byers anchoring a dominant ground game. Their defense is opportunistic, with 11 interceptions and 20 sacks. Virginia Union also boasts a high-octane passing attack led by QB Mark Wright, who has thrown for 1,965 yards and 18 touchdowns.

    Virginia Union, HBCU, Wingate
Virginia Union is in the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

    Wingate Bulldogs

    Key Stats (2024):

    • Record: 9-1 (6-1 SAC)
    • Scoring Offense: 29.1 points per game
    • Scoring Defense: 10 points allowed per game
    • Rushing Offense: 170.1 yards per game (4.4 yards per carry)
    • Passing Offense: 182.2 yards per game (55.4% completion, 14 TDs, 7 INTs)

Wingate’s defense is elite, allowing only 202.8 yards per game. The Bulldogs’ front seven has been dominant, with 34 sacks on the season, led by Marquise Fleming (8 sacks) and Kai Russell (6.5 sacks). Offensively, Wingate relies on a balanced attack, with QB Brooks Bentley managing the passing game efficiently.

    Matchup Keys

    1. Battle in the Trenches: Virginia Union’s offensive line will be tested by Wingate’s ferocious defensive front. The Panthers need to protect Mark Wright to exploit Wingate’s secondary.
    2. Stopping Jada Byers: Wingate’s ability to contain Byers will be pivotal. The Bulldogs excel at limiting rushing attacks, allowing only 79.2 yards per game.
    3. Turnover Margin: Both teams are adept at creating turnovers. Wingate has 11 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles, while Virginia Union has also been effective in forcing mistakes.

    Historical Context

Wingate’s streak against HBCU opponents adds intrigue to this clash. They’ve consistently handled similar challenges, including the previous playoff win over Virginia Union. The Panthers, however, enter with a point to prove after falling short in 2022.

    Prediction

This matchup pits Wingate’s smothering defense against Virginia Union’s explosive offense. If Wingate can control the pace and win the turnover battle, their streak is likely to continue. However, a breakout game from Jada Byers could tilt the scales in Virginia Union’s favor. Expect a closely fought game with high stakes for the HBCU squad.

Post-game altercations AKA brawls were a theme this weekend in HBCU football — and the CIAA Championship Game was no exception.

The conference title game of the CIAA between Virginia Union and Virginia State — two schools separated by less than 30 minutes — was chippy one. And that continued after the whistle sounded on Virginia Union’s 17-13 win. Several players engaged in postgame fisticuffs, prompting a statement from the league’s commissioner.

“I am disappointed and heartbroken regarding the behaviors of two of our best teams at the conclusion of our 107th football championship,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker. “The conference will investigate and manage per its bylaws and processes for unsportsmanlike behavior and misconduct.

“It is disappointing that our story and narrative for this championship did not end with the story that should be told as part of the CIAA legacy, leadership and community.”

The CIAA title game was one of several pivotal HBCU football contests marred by brawls after the fact.

Things kicked off with North Carolina Central and Howard on Friday night, with both players and coaches involved in the action, which was broadcast live on ESPNU. MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills issued a statement on Saturday, promising an investigation of the incident.

And moments after Jackson State clinched the SWAC East title with a win over Alabama State, the two sides broke out into a brawl in the middle of the field. Alabama State AD Dr. Jason Caple released a statement as well.

While the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was promoted as the big fight this weekend, apparently HBCU football games signed up to be on the undercard.

Virginia Union held off Virginia State in a gritty 17-13 battle to claim the CIAA Championship in Salem, Virginia, securing back-to-back titles in an HBCU title bout. The victory, powered by the relentless ground game led by Jada Byers and a staunch defensive stand, solidified the Panthers’ dominance in the conference as they now await word on their potential berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Panthers struck early, with Byers capping an eight-play, 94-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Virginia State answered with a field goal in the second, but Brady Myers’ 22-yard kick just before halftime gave Virginia Union a 10-3 lead.

In the third quarter, Virginia State’s Romelo Williams connected with Tylique Ray for a seven-yard touchdown to tie the game between the two Virginia HBCUs at 10-10. The momentum seemed to shift, but Virginia Union responded early in the fourth. Quarterback Mark Wright found Reginald Vick Jr. on a 23-yard strike, giving the Panthers a 17-10 edge.

In Super Region II of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, four HBCU football programs are in the mix for playoff contention as we head into the final week before the field is announced. With only the top seven teams earning a playoff spot, each HBCU’s Week 11 outcome will be pivotal in determining their postseason fate. Here’s where things stand:

    1. Miles College (6th, 8-1 overall, 8-1 in-region) – Miles holds a critical advantage as it will compete in the SIAC Football Championship game against Clark Atlanta this week. A win here would solidify its position in the top seven, while a loss could endanger its playoff spot. Currently, it is in control of its own destiny.

    2. Johnson C. Smith University (7th, 8-2 overall, 8-2 in-region) – JCSU is clinging to the seventh and final NCAA playoff spot, but it will be idle this week after dropping a game to Livingstone. This leaves its fate partially in the hands of other teams’ performances. Johnson C. Smith needs key teams, like Virginia Union and West Florida, to falter if they hope to hold their position in the final playoff bracket.

    3. Virginia Union University (9th, 7-2 overall, 6-1 in-region) – Virginia Union has a crucial opportunity to improve its standing as it faces Virginia State in the CIAA Championship game. A win could boost it into playoff position, depending on how other results fall. It’ll be aiming to move past Johnson C. Smith, taking advantage of JCSU’s idle week despite the fact it lost the head-to-head matchup with it.

    Kairon Martin, HBCU Gameday, WSSU

    4. Winston-Salem State University (10th, 7-2 overall, 6-2 in-region) – Winston-Salem State dropped in the rankings despite a thrilling 37-31 overtime victory over Fayetteville State. Like Johnson C. Smith, WSSU will be idle this week, limiting its ability to make a final impression. It will be watching the outcomes of the SIAC and CIAA championships closely, hoping for results that might create an opening for it.

With two of these four HBCU football programs (Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State) idle, their NCAA playoff hopes will rest largely on the performances of Miles and Virginia Union. This week’s results will be decisive in determining which HBCUs make it into the playoff field. For more insights on team scenarios and standings, check HBCUGameday.com for the latest updates.

In a high-stakes matchup at Rogers Stadium, Virginia State pulled off a 35-28 victory over Virginia Union, igniting excitement for an upcoming HBCU rivalry rematch in the CIAA Championship.

Virginia State’s win was as thrilling as it was essential; their championship hopes depended on Johnson C. Meanwhile, Virginia Union had already punched its ticket with a resounding 91-0 win over Bluefield State the week prior, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

    Virginia State, CIAA

Virginia State struck first when Romelo Williams connected with Tayshaun Porter for a 38-yard touchdown, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive showing. Despite Virginia Union responding with a field goal and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mark Wright to Reginald Vick Jr., Virginia State continued to surge. Williams showcased his versatility, rushing for a 1-yard touchdown just before halftime, bringing the score to 21-13. In the third quarter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers made a statement with a powerful 2-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 21-21 and adding intensity to the rivalry clash.

But Virginia State’s offense didn’t falter. Williams’ deep pass to Malik Hunter for a 91-yard touchdown electrified the crowd and put the Trojans back in control. Shortly afterward, a 23-yard rushing touchdown by Jimmyll Williams extended their lead to 35-21, and Virginia State’s defense held strong against Virginia Union’s final attempts. Though Virginia Union narrowed the gap with a fourth-quarter touchdown, they couldn’t overcome a late interception that sealed Virginia State’s hard-fought victory.

The win marked a thrilling chapter in their rivalry, with both teams now readying for a climactic rematch in the CIAA Championship on November 17 in Salem, Virginia, where pride, history, and the championship title will be on the line for the two Virginia HBCU programs.

Charlotte, NC – With week 9 of football in the rearview and a pivotal week 10 on the horizon, one team in the conference has solidified a spot in the 2024 CIAA Football Championship (Nov. 16th – Salem, VA) with others in tight contention. As it stands, Virginia Union University, Johnson C Smith University & Virginia State University sit in first, second and third place respectively. Regardless of how Week 10 plays out, VUU has already earned a spot in the CIAA Championship, however, final seedings and regular season champions are yet to be finalized.

Lets take a look below at the possible week 10 scenarios:

CIAA Virginia Union Johnson C Smith Virginia State

    1. If VUU wins & JCSU wins: Both teams would advance to the Championship. At 7-0, Virginia Union would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. At 6-1, Johnson C Smith would earn the #2 seed. Note, with the adjusted 7-game conference schedule, the VUU vs. JCSU game that took place on September 21st was denoted a conference game for JCSU only and not VUU.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

    2. If VUU wins, JCSU loses & WSSU wins: At 7-0, VUU would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. JCSU, VSU & WSSU would be tied at 5-2, however, JCSU would advance as determined by head-to-head against both VSU & WSSU.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (5-2)

    3. If VUU loses & JCSU loses: VSU & VUU will both advance to the Championship. With both teams at 6-1, they would be co-champions of the regular season and Virginia State would be the #1 seed in the Championship as determined by head-to-head.
    Championship Game: #1 VSU (6-1) vs. #2 VUU (6-1)

    4. If VUU loses & JCSU wins: VSU, VUU & JCSU would be co-champions of the regular season, however, this creates a 3-way tie for Championship consideration. To determine who moves on to the Championship, the first tiebreaker is winning percentage within the 7-game conference schedule, with each team at 6-1, all would be tied. The next tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, also, within the 7-game conference schedule. In this case, because VSU, VUU & JCSU did not all compete head-to-head within the 7-game conference schedule, head-to-head competition cannot be considered. The next tie breaker is point differential against common opponents. VSU, VUU & JCSU only had one common opponent, Bluefield State. At +91, VUU would move on to the Championship. VSU & JCSU remain tied +39. With only VSU & JCSU in contention for the final Championship spot, the tie breaker procedures reset between the two teams. The first tiebreaker, conference winning percentage, would remain tied. However, the second tiebreaker, head-to-head favors JCSU. JCSU would move on to the Championship as the #2 seed.
    Championship Game: #1 VUU (6-1) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

Virginia Union University (VUU) turned heads and in the HBCU football world and beyond this past Saturday, with a staggering 91-0 victory over Bluefield State.

The point output tied a 108-year-old scoring record, set back in 1916. Head coach Dr. Alvin Parker addressed the monumental score, emphasizing that it wasn’t a case of running up the points, despite going for a two-point conversion up 89-0 early in the fourth quarter.

“It definitely wasn’t an effort to try to run up any score or anything like that,” Parker stated in the school’s post-game interview. Instead, the team used the opportunity to reward players across the roster, giving them a chance to shine on the field. “Everybody earned the right to play, and everybody earned the reps that they deserved and they earned today,” he explained.

Parker’s approach reflected a focus on development and recognition. “When guys got in, they produced,” he remarked. This sentiment was evident as quarterback Mark Wright threw for a career-high 347 yards, completing passes of 90 and 88 yards, while RJ Rosales added another 121 passing yards. The team combined for 468 yards in the air, showcasing the depth of VUU’s offense.

Defensively, the Panthers were unstoppable, recording four interceptions, including a 98-yard touchdown return by William Davis. The team’s defensive effort contributed to the impressive shutout.

“Our defense doesn’t get as much recognition as they necessarily deserve, but I was happy to see them perform the way they did today.”

As the game progressed, the team rallied around the idea of pursuing the record, which was set against Saint Paul’s College during World War I.

“Those guys, they wanted the record…the whole team was going off on it.” In the end, his players’ determination led to a historical tie, making a lasting mark in HBCU football.

Next up, Virginia Union University faces off against rival Virginia State, a game that holds implications for the conference championship—a fitting stage for this history-making team.

The recent release of the NCAA Division II Super Region Two rankings has provided an exciting moment for HBCU football, with three CIAA programs represented as well as one from the SIAC. These initial rankings, listed in alphabetical order, highlight Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union, and Winston-Salem State among the top teams in the region, showcasing the strength and competitiveness of HBCU football this season.

Johnson C. Smith holds a perfect 8-0 record, reflecting its dominance in the CIAA and positioning it well for a playoff berth. Virginia Union, with a 6-1 record, continues to build on its recent success and has emerged as a top contender in the region. Winston-Salem State, at 6-2, rounds out the list of HBCUs, proving that they’re a team to watch in the playoff race. This inclusion of three HBCU programs signifies the strong presence and growing respect for CIAA football within Division II.

A fourth HBCU, Miles College, is the lone SIAC team on the initial list. It is 6-1 on the season.

The Division II playoff selection process involves regional rankings to ensure representation from different parts of the country. The top teams from each of the four super regions are selected to compete, with a committee assessing factors such as win-loss record, strength of schedule, and head-to-head competition. The final ranking, not alphabetical, will determine which teams secure a spot in the playoff bracket, making each remaining game crucial for these HBCUs.

For these HBCU programs, advancing to the NCAA playoffs is a prestigious opportunity to compete on a national level and elevate the profile of HBCU football. As the season progresses, all three CIAA teams will look to solidify their standing in the rankings, aiming to secure their places in the playoffs and proudly represent HBCU football on the national stage.

HBCU fans are watching closely as the 2024 CIAA football season enters its final stretch. The race for the championship is down to the wire as Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Virginia State position themselves for a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. With only two weeks left, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game counts.

    The Top Contenders

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. Their final regular-season matchup is against Virginia State, a game with massive implications for both teams.

Virginia State stands at 4-1 in the CIAA, with a 5-3 overall record. It faced Winston-Salem State but took a loss in a game that didn’t impact its conference standings. This gives Virginia State an extra boost in their run for the title. Their season-ender against Virginia Union will be one of the most anticipated games of the season, as both teams are fighting for a top-two finish.

Winston-Salem State is not technically out of contention with a 4-2 conference record and a 6-3 overall record. While it has had a strong season, a recent loss has put them just a step behind the top three contenders. It would need the three teams ahead of it to end the season with two conference losses as its win at Virginia State earlier in the season didn’t count as a loss for VSU.

    Remaining Challenges and Final Games

Johnson C. Smith faces Fayetteville State next, a team with a strong championship history, having been a staple in the CIAA Championship Game for the past few seasons. This could be Johnson C. Smith’s toughest game yet, as Fayetteville State is known for delivering under high-stakes situations. After that, Johnson C. Smith closes their regular season against Livingstone in a classic rivalry game that could add one final twist to their undefeated run.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU Gameday, CIAA

For Virginia Union and Virginia State, their season-ending showdown could be a de facto playoff. If both teams maintain their records, this game will likely decide who earns a championship slot. The potential for an intense battle adds further excitement to an already competitive season.

CIAA Championship Hopes on the Line

As the 2024 CIAA season races toward its conclusion, these HBCU teams are each pushing to secure their place in the championship. With only two spots available, every play, every drive, and every game could shape the final outcome. While Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union are currently in control, the unpredictable nature of college football means that anything can happen in these final weeks.

Whoever prevails will not only earn the CIAA title but also bring pride to their HBCU, representing the top level of talent and competition in the conference.

Virginia Union University’s star running back Jada Byers delivered an unforgettable performance in the Panthers’ 56-28 victory over Bowie State, firmly establishing his place among HBCU football legends. Byers rushed for a staggering 324 yards, setting a new school record and becoming Virginia Union’s all-time leading rusher with 5,311 career yards, surpassing Andre Braxton’s 5,008-yard mark from 1997-2000.

Byers’ six rushing touchdowns in this game also rewrote the Panthers’ history books. Not only did he break Braxton’s previous career record of 63 rushing touchdowns, pushing his own total to 66, but Byers also set a new single-game record for rushing touchdowns, breaking a 93-year-old record previously held by three different players. His relentless display on the field saw him score from distances that showcased both his speed and endurance, including a thrilling 75-yard run on the first play of the game that set the tone for his historic day.

With HBCU athletes continuing to make significant impacts, Byers’ record-breaking game adds a new chapter to Virginia Union’s storied athletic history. His achievement demonstrates the strength and talent that HBCU programs bring to college football, showcasing elite athleticism and dedication.

Byers, who had previously set the school’s rushing yard record with a 319-yard game in 2022, outdid even himself in this matchup, pushing his legacy to unprecedented heights. As HBCU football gains increasing attention, Byers’ performance underscores the exceptional skill and historic contributions of HBCU athletes in collegiate sports.

Virginia Union improved to 6-2 on the season, and 5-0 in CIAA play.

As we head into Week Eight of CIAA football, the standings reflect a dynamic and competitive season in HBCU football, shaped by both strong performances and significant off-field developments. Johnson C. Smith leads the way, undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play after being Shaw on Saturday, solidifying its position as one of the top HBCU programs this year. Virginia Union, also 4-0 in the CIAA and 5-2 overall, has emerged as another dominant force, riding a four-game win streak.

A key factor affecting the standings this season has been the loss of Saint Augustine’s football program. Their absence has caused the league to shift from an eight-game conference format to seven-games. Notably, Virginia Union and Virginia State both benefitted when their Week Three losses to CIAA opponents did not count toward conference standings due to the adjustments. Virginia Union’s loss to Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State’s loss to Winston-Salem State were both excluded from the CIAA record, keeping both teams in a strong position despite early setbacks. The wins did count for JCSU and WSSU, who are set to meet on Saturday for a showdown that could go a long way to determining who makes the CIAA title game.

Winston-Salem State remains in the hunt with a 4-1 conference record and 6-2 overall, trailing closely behind Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union. Virginia State, despite a 4-3 overall record, is 3-1 in conference play and still a strong contender as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, other HBCU programs like Livingstone (3-2 CIAA) and Shaw (2-3 CIAA) are trying to find consistency as they navigate a tough schedule.

Fayetteville State, Bowie State — two longtime Division II HBCU powers — and others are working to turn their seasons around and play spoiler. As we head into the final stretch, the CIAA standings reflect the resilience and competitiveness of these HBCU teams, each vying for a chance to make their mark in a season defined by change and opportunity.

Virginia Union secured a decisive 31-13 victory over CIAA rival Winston-Salem State in an HBCU showdown at Hovey Field.

The Panthers, powered by efficient offense and a stifling defense, outpaced the Rams early, building a commanding 24-3 lead by halftime. Virginia Union’s Mark Wright was key in managing the game, completing 13 of 17 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, while the Panthers’ ground attack, led by Curtis Allen and Jada Byers, racked up 176 rushing yards.

The Rams struggled to establish their offense, managing just 69 rushing yards against a tough Virginia Union defense. Winston-Salem State quarterback Daylin Lee had moments of brilliance, throwing for 253 yards and a touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the balanced Panthers’ attack. The Rams’ only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Lee connected with Brandon Person-Boyd on an 8-yard pass, closing the gap to 31-13.

With this win, VUU improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in CIAA play, while Winston-Salem State fell to 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference. The victory showcased the strength of Virginia Union’s HBCU football tradition and served as a crucial statement in their pursuit of a defending its conference title.
