Ettrick, Va — It was a banner weekend for HBCU athletics and for the sport of soccer, as Virginia State University swept both the men’s and women’s CIAA Soccer Cups on their home field at Rogers Stadium. The victories — capped by a thrilling 2-1 overtime win by the women’s team over Bluefield State on Sunday, November 9 — marked the first championships under new Athletic Director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, who took over in March.

A new venture for the CIAA

The CIAA Soccer Cup was created to give member schools without a full six-team sponsorship a postseason experience, and Virginia State took full advantage. The Trojans’ women’s soccer team — just three years into its existence — fought their way to the top in dramatic fashion.

Valerie Camacho put VSU ahead in the 38th minute with an assist from Loryn Sturgis, before Bluefield State’s Yassin Joof tied things up in the 56th. The match remained even through regulation until Morgan Parris delivered the golden goal in the 93rd minute, assisted by Tatiana Ward, to give Virginia State a 2-1 overtime victory.

Goalkeeper Tianna Roberts collected two saves as the Trojans outshot the Lady Blues 7-3 on goal. The win capped a 5-10-1 season — but in context, those five victories represented a major leap for a young HBCU program still building its identity in the sport of soccer.

Why There’s No NCAA Bid — Yet

Virginia State’s championship was historic, but it came in a structure unique to the CIAA. Under NCAA rules, a conference must have at least six teams sponsoring a sport in order to qualify for an official automatic postseason bid. The CIAA currently has four schools with women’s soccer programs: Virginia State, Lincoln (Pa.), Shaw, and Bluefield State.

Because there aren’t yet enough teams to meet the six-school threshold, the CIAA does not sponsor soccer as an official NCAA championship sport — leaving these four programs as independents.

Rather than let their seasons end without a true finish line, CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker and VSU President Dr. Makola Abdullah pushed for Tiffani-Dawn Sykes and Co. to facilitate the CIAA Soccer Cup — a postseason tournament designed to give these student-athletes the same competitive experience enjoyed by their peers in other sports.

“This was about giving our student-athletes a championship experience,” Sykes said. “Even though the CIAA doesn’t yet sponsor soccer because there aren’t enough teams, we still wanted our players to compete for something meaningful.”

Sykes’ Impact and the Bigger HBCU Picture

Just a few months after returning to her alma mater as AD, Sykes led the push for VSU to join the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) for the opportunity to compete for a national championship.

But in the meantime, Virginia State became the first school to hoist both the men’s and women’s Soccer Cup trophies, symbolizing a new chapter in HBCU soccer growth.

“Seeing both of our teams win was incredible,” Sykes said. “Our women finished the season ranked fourth in the USCAA polls, which means they’ll play in the national tournament in Pittsburgh. That’s huge for them and for our program.”

Watershed moment for VSU women

Head coach Anthony “TJ” Andrews, who started the women’s soccer program in 2022, reflected on how far his team has come.

“We went from one win last season to five this year and a championship,” Andrews said. “These young ladies have persevered through everything — they’ve matured, they’ve learned, and they’ve grown. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Junior forward Morgan Parris, who scored the overtime winner, called the moment surreal. “I just got tunnel vision for the goal,” she said. “I’m just thankful for my team — we fought so hard, and I’m happy I could finish it for us.”

Her goal wasn’t just a golden finish to the match — it was a golden moment in the history of VSU athletics.

Growing D2 HBCU soccer

Andrews and Sykes both see the success as part of a broader mission: expanding soccer’s footprint among HBCUs.

“There are still a lot of independent HBCU soccer programs that don’t have a conference,” Andrews explained. “With this excitement and momentum, I hope we can create a full conference so our student-athletes can compete for championships every year.”

That vision is consistent with what Sykes described as Virginia State’s top strategic goal — enhancing the student experience.

“For student-athletes, being able to compete for a championship is a huge part of that,” she said. “Now our soccer players can leave here with degrees and championship rings.”

This initiative also positions Virginia State as a leader in growing the sport of soccer across the D2 HBCU landscape. By hosting and winning the first CIAA Soccer Cup, the Trojans set a precedent that other programs will look to follow — not only on the field but in how institutions can work together to elevate emerging sports.

And The Band Played On…

The celebrations in Ettrick went beyond the pitch. The Trojan Explosion Band, led by Dr. Taylor Whitehead, performed at the soccer semifinals just after returning from a heated rivalry football matchup against Virginia Union.

“They brought their buses right to the stadium and played for our soccer team,” Sykes said. “We might have to call it the ‘third half’ when they perform after our soccer games.”

The atmosphere captured the essence of HBCU pride — school spirit, community support, and history in the making.

Virginia State women's soccer

Looking Ahead

With two trophies in hand, Virginia State now turns its focus to the USCAA national tournament in Pittsburgh, where the women’s team will represent the CIAA and HBCU soccer on a national stage.

For Sykes, it’s a fitting first chapter.

“To see our athletes smiling and holding those trophies — that’s what this is about,” she said. “We’re just getting started.”

As the sun set over Rogers Stadium, this didn’t just feel like another weekend in Ettrick. It felt like the birth of a new era — for Virginia State, for the CIAA, and for D2 HBCU soccer across the nation

Only 25 miles separate Richmond and Petersburg, but the gap feels much wider when Virginia Union and Virginia State meet. The Battle of I-95 isn’t just another CIAA matchup — it’s Central Virginia HBCU pride at its loudest. This year, the fight comes to Richmond, home of the Panthers and hometown stage for the league’s most complete team.
For Union’s star running back Curtis Allen, a Petersburg native, it’s personal. He’ll face the team from his own city, this time as the headliner for the Panthers’ championship-bound season.

Why It Matters

Virginia Union (8-1, 7-0 CIAA) has already clinched a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. Still, the Panthers want more — to finish unbeaten in conference play and send a message before the postseason. Under Coach Alvin Parker, they’ve outscored opponents 411–155, averaging 45.7 points per gameVUU.
Virginia State (6-3, 4-2 CIAA) is out of the title race but not out of the fight. The Trojans would love nothing more than to walk into Richmond and spoil Union’s run. In this rivalry, records reset, and pride becomes everything.

Inside the Numbers

Union leads the CIAA in total offense (509 yards per game) and converts on half its third downs (51%). They’ve scored touchdowns on 77% of red-zone trips while holding the ball for over 31 minutes a gameVUU.
Running back Curtis Allen has been unstoppable1,947 yards, 25 touchdowns, and an 8.7-yard average per carry. Quarterback RJ Rosales adds balance with 1,407 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air.
Defensively, Union allows just 17 points per game, giving up only seven rushing touchdowns all season.

Virginia State brings balance and danger. Quarterback Rahsaan Matthews Jr. has thrown for 2,216 yards and 20 touchdowns, completing 63% of his passescume (2). The Trojans average 440 total yards per game, powered by Jaylen Pretlow (533 yards, 7 TDs) and Malik Hunter (594 yards, 5 TDs). However, penalties have stalled drives — 86 flags for 765 yards — and their red-zone conversion rate (64%) leaves points on the field.

Players to Watch

Allen is the headliner. No one in HBCU football or Division II has found the end zone more often. His combination of patience, vision, and burst defines Union’s identity. On defense, Lamumba Howard and Ahmad Ross lead a unit that’s totaled 25 sacks and eight interceptions.
For VSU, Matthews Jr. will have to handle that pressure and find Jaylen Pretlow, whose versatility as a receiver and return man makes him a threat every time he touches the ball.

Hidden Factors

Special teams could shift momentum. Union kicker Brady Myers hasn’t missed an extra point (55-for-55) and has nailed six of seven field goals. For VSU, Pretlow and Carlos Alvarez have combined for 472 kickoff return yards, giving the Trojans a chance to steal field position.

The Atmosphere

Richmond will be electric. Expect the drums of the marching bands to echo down Lombardy Street and the crowd at Hovey Field to be split between maroon and orange. The Battle of I-95 isn’t just a rivalry — it’s an annual family reunion where bragging rights last all year.

Bottom Line

Virginia Union is already in, but perfection is still the goal. A win keeps the Panthers rolling toward the title game. For Virginia State, the motivation is simple — walk into there trap and takeover there trap.
For Curtis Allen, it’s deeper. The Petersburg kid who became a star now has the chance to finish the job in his backyard — against the city that once claimed him. Always an exciting HBCU rivalry.

The national spotlight on HBCU football in Division II continues to shine. Still, the balance of power shifts inside the CIAA as the Top 25 polls reset following a pivotal weekend. Virginia Union University, Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), Virginia State University, and Edward Waters University are all shaping the narrative — whether inside the CIAA race or, in Edward Waters’ case, as an SIAC program gaining national recognition.

Virginia Union Rises to the Top Among HBCU Programs

Fresh off their ranked clash against Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union has emerged as the top-ranked HBCU program in both the D2Football.com and AFCA Division II polls. The Panthers’ 28-10 victory over JCSU not only cemented their place in the Top 25 but also pushed them up to No. 21 in both the D2Football.com and the AFCA poll.

Union has leaned heavily on running back Curtis Allen, who has piled up 460 rushing yards and eight touchdowns through three games. Quarterback RJ Rosales has added 427 yards and three scores through the air, while receivers Keon Davis (161 yards, 1 TD) and Ricky Key Jr. (97 yards) have stretched the field. Defensively, the Panthers are giving up just 18 points per game with 20.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks.

But the Panthers’ résumé comes with an asterisk: their only blemish is a 41-38 road loss to Edward Waters, an SIAC program that stunned VUU in Jacksonville. The Tigers’ win is the only defeat for Union this season, proving that the road to national respect in Division II HBCU football is starting to run through more than one conference.

JCSU Falls, but Not Forgotten

The loss to Union cost Johnson C. Smith its place in the polls. After the Richmond matchup, the Golden Bulls dropped out of both Top 25s. Still, they picked up 13 votes in the AFCA poll, showing that despite their slide, pollsters believe in their talent and potential.

They’ll look to bounce back at Homecoming this week against Bluefield State as another crucial road game looms at Virginia State on Oct. 5, giving JCSU another chance to re-enter the national conversation.

Virginia State Enters the Picture

If Union is steady and JCSU is regrouping, then Virginia State is surging. The Trojans cracked No. 23 in the D2Football.com poll this week after edging Winston-Salem State by a single point.

In the AFCA poll, VSU remains outside the Top 25, but they’re clearly on the radar, especially given their upcoming tests: a road trip to Fayetteville State followed by a high-stakes home date with JCSU.

Edward Waters: SIAC Spoiler with National Impact

Edward Waters may not play in the CIAA, but their impact can’t be ignored. The Tigers’ dramatic victory over Virginia Union in the Unity Classic was more than just a program milestone — it reshaped the program’s identity within the Division II HBCU landscape. Their 3-0 start included that game-winning field goal, making EWU the only team to defeat Union this fall.

While they’re not in the Top 25, Edward Waters earned a vote in this week’s AFCA poll, showing that national observers are taking notice of the SIAC upstart.

A CIAA Race with National Stakes

Just a week ago, the conversation centered on two nationally ranked HBCUs colliding when Union and JCSU met in Richmond. Now, the picture has widened: Virginia State is in the mix, JCSU is fighting to regain traction, and Edward Waters has emerged from the SIAC.

The CIAA title race is always tense. But as the D2Football.com and AFCA polls show, it’s now a national storyline.

Winston-Salem, NC — Virginia State University leaned on opportunistic defense and special teams play to secure a 34-33 victory over Winston-Salem State (WSSU) on Saturday at Bowman Gray Stadium. Three takeaways in the third quarter — two on special teams and a tipped interception — sparked a 24-point outburst that proved decisive in front of 5,685 fans.

WSSU struck first as quarterback Daylin Lee capped a grinding opening drive with a four-yard touchdown to Jayden Grimes. The Rams held a 13-10 halftime lead behind two Gabriel Lorenzana field goals. But the Trojans flipped the script after the break.

It started when VSU recovered a fumble on a punt return, setting up Rashaan Matthews Jr.’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Rose. Minutes later, Dante Clark intercepted Lee on a tipped ball, and the Trojans quickly converted with a field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, another WSSU return miscue gave VSU the ball again, leading to another Matthews-to-Rose score. Matthews capped the quarter with an eight-yard strike to Marquis Smith, and suddenly the Trojans led 34-20.

Matthews finished 17 of 25 for 137 yards and four touchdowns, spreading the ball to six receivers. Rose starred on both sides of the offense, rushing for 124 yards and adding two receiving touchdowns. As a unit, VSU piled up 267 rushing yards and converted 9 of 13 third downs.

Virginia State

WSSU refused to quit. Lee threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns while adding a short rushing score. Running back Noah Marshall pulled the Rams within one with a four-yard touchdown run at the 5:55 mark, but Lorenzana’s extra point attempt missed wide. VSU’s offense then bled out the final minutes with a punishing ground game to seal the one-point win.

Head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III emphasized that Virginia State didn’t simply benefit from mistakes — they created them.

“They didn’t give us anything,” Frazier said. “We went and took the turnovers and turned them into points. Their offense didn’t touch the ball until deep into the third quarter because we got turnovers. That’s a testament to special teams as well as our defense.”

The victory lifted Virginia State to 2-1 overall — however the game did not count as a conference game for VSU. Meanwhile Winston-Salem State slipped to 2-2 overall. For Frazier, the next step is conditioning.

“We’ve got to get these guys in better shape to be able to finish ballgames,” he admitted.

At least two HBCUs in Virginia shut down their campuses on September 11, 2025, after receiving threats. Virginia State University and Hampton University both issued urgent messages to protect their students, faculty, and staff.

Virginia State University Closes Campus

Virginia State University (VSU) announced early in the day that its campus would close immediately. The school urged students, faculty, and staff to check their VSU emails for updates. Officials stressed the move was necessary to protect the well-being of the community.

The sudden decision created uncertainty for many. Students and faculty looked to official channels for guidance as VSU worked with law enforcement to review the situation.

Hampton University

Hampton University Suspends Activities for Two Days

Later in the day, Hampton University halted all non-essential activities for September 11 and 12. Its announcement canceled all classes, athletic events, and campus gatherings. Hampton leaders reminded the community that safety remains the top priority.

Students living off campus were told not to return. Those already on campus were advised to limit movement unless needed. Faculty and staff not considered essential were asked to leave campus. The university also introduced additional security measures.

Hampton encouraged the community to remain watchful. Officials reminded everyone: if you see something, say something. Updates will come through university police, social media, and other official channels.

Broader Concerns for Virginia HBCUs

These shutdowns highlight the pressure HBCUs in Virginia face when threats emerge. Both schools acted quickly to protect their communities. Their swift actions show a clear focus on safety and preparedness.

Virginia’s HBCUs are vital to the state’s educational and cultural life. Protecting those institutions ensures that students can learn and thrive in safe environments. By moving fast and communicating clearly, Virginia State and Hampton University reinforced their commitment to their communities.

As the situation develops, these measures remind students and staff that vigilance and communication are essential when safety is at risk.

Virginia State University wasted no time reminding the CIAA why it remains one of the best HBCU programs in Division II football. Fresh off a run to last year’s conference championship game, the Trojans rolled into Wilson, N.C., on Thursday night and overpowered Barton College in a 35-7 season-opening victory at Truist Stadium.

A Fast Start

VSU’s offense struck quickly. Quarterback Rahsaan Matthews connected with Kevin Gayles on a 58-yard touchdown strike less than two minutes into the game, setting the tone for what would become a long night for Barton’s defense. Running back Brandon Rose followed with a six-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter, giving the Trojans a commanding 14-0 lead. By halftime, Virginia State had built a 21-0 cushion thanks to Matthews’ six-yard scoring toss to Ri’Jon Hammond.

Offensive Firepower

The numbers told the story of a dominant outing. VSU piled up 569 yards of total offense, including 368 through the air and 201 on the ground. Matthews was sharp all night, completing 21 of 27 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns. Gayles was his top target, hauling in six passes for 131 yards and a score, while Ajenavi Byrd (92 yards) and Malik Hunter (68 yards) added depth in the passing attack. Rose did the heavy lifting on the ground with 67 yards and two touchdowns, while Hammond added a rushing score to go along with his receiving touchdown.

VSU’s offense not only moved the ball but controlled the tempo, holding possession for over 40 minutes and converting 10 of 14 third downs. The balance between run and pass made the Trojans virtually unstoppable for three quarters, as they scored on five of their first eight drives.

Defensive Dominance

While the offense clicked, the defense was equally suffocating. Barton finished with just 115 yards of total offense and a staggering minus-three yards rushing. Virginia State’s defensive front consistently collapsed the line of scrimmage, recording six tackles for loss and forcing an interception. Barton’s lone bright spot came late in the fourth quarter when Trevor Nored connected with Dakauri Davis for an eight-yard touchdown pass, long after the game had been decided.

Looking Ahead

Virginia State certainly made a statement in its opener. The HBCU squad looked every bit the contender expected to challenge for the CIAA crown once again. Now the stage shifts to a marquee matchup next week as VSU travels to face in-state rival Norfolk State.

The Trojans will be aiming for their third win over the Division I HBCU in less than a decade. The Spartans, meanwhile, had a tough outing with a  27-7 home loss to Towson in Michael Vick’s coaching debut.

With momentum firmly on its side, Virginia State enters that rivalry clash brimming with confidence.

Virginia State University (VSU), a proud HBCU, honors Dr. Latorial Faison, Assistant Professor and Chair of the Department of Languages & Literature, for her remarkable achievement in poetry. Her latest book, Nursery Rhymes in Black, has earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination in Poetry, one of the most prestigious awards in American literature.

Pulitzer Prize Nomination for Nursery Rhymes in Black

The University of Alaska Press published Nursery Rhymes in Black after it won the 2023 Permafrost Poetry Book Prize. The press released the book on July 15, 2025, and later submitted it for Pulitzer Prize consideration.

Dr. Faison expressed her gratitude:

“It’s an honor to have my new book, Nursery Rhymes in Black, nominated for the Pulitzer. This collection is deeply tied to the heart and history of who I am as a Black woman in America. I am grateful to trailblazers like Gwendolyn Brooks, Lucille Clifton, and Nikki Giovanni, whose voices carved the path, kept the light on, and made this moment possible.”

A Poetic Journey of Culture, Race, and Identity

In Nursery Rhymes in Black, Dr. Faison reimagines familiar childhood rhymes through the lens of Black history, culture, and personal experience. She blends tradition, memory, and resistance to create a powerful poetic recollection of race, roots, and identity.

Many acclaimed literary voices praised the book, including:

  • Dr. Joanne Gabbin, founder of the Furious Flower Poetry Center
  • Judy Juanita, acclaimed writer and activist
  • Glenis Redmond, award-winning poet
  • Trudier Harris, noted literary critic
  • Cedric Tillman, celebrated poet

These scholars and writers highlighted how Dr. Faison captures the depth of Black family life, resilience, and cultural pride.

Dr. Faison’s Legacy and Literary Contributions

A proud HBCU alumna from Virginia State University, Dr. Faison has written more than 16 books, including:

  • Mother to Son
  • 28 Days of Poetry Celebrating Black History
  • The Missed Education of the Negro: An Examination of the Black Segregated Education Experience of Southampton County, 1950–1970

Her Pulitzer Prize nomination demonstrates her literary excellence and strengthens VSU’s reputation for nurturing voices that reflect the richness of Black history, memory, and resilience.

Looking Ahead

The committee will announce the 2026 Pulitzer Prize winners in May 2026. Regardless of the outcome, Dr. Faison’s nomination already affirms her artistry and the lasting impact of her work on American literature.

Ettrick,Va. (Aug 5, 2025) – The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) has officially accepted Virginia State University as a full-time member for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, and baseball, beginning with the 2025–26 academic year.

This membership grants Virginia State University full eligibility to compete in the USCAA postseason tournaments and nominate student-athletes for national awards. The three Trojan athletic programs will participate at the Division I level within the association, while maintaining their NCAA Division 2 status.

VSU baseball has competed in the New South Atlantic Conference (NSAC) since the 2021 season. With official membership, VSU is now eligible to compete in the USCAA Small College World Series.

Virginia State’s women’s and men’s soccer programs—entering their third and second seasons respectively—will also benefit from the affiliation. Both teams will compete as independents but will share USCAA membership with CIAA peer institution Shaw University, a USCAA member since the 2017 athletic season.

“Joining the USCAA opens up new opportunities for Virginia State University to recruit talented student-athletes and provide them with a championship-caliber experience,” said Tiffani-Dawn B. Sykes, Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. “It ensures that our student-athletes have access to national recognition, meaningful postseason experiences, and a competitive platform. This affiliation not only enhances the visibility of our baseball and soccer programs, but also marks an exciting new chapter in VSU Athletics as we continue to grow our brand and expand our footprint in college athletics.

About the USCAA
The United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) exists to provide quality athletic competition on a national scale for small colleges that align with the rules and standards set by the association and its bylaws. The USCAA fosters the holistic development of student-athletes—mind, body, and spirit—through competitive opportunities rooted in integrity, leadership, scholarship, and life values.

By promoting educational priorities alongside athletics, the USCAA ensures that student-athletes grow both academically and athletically.

All-in. Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is setting the standard for HBCU athletic leadership at Virginia State.

For Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, returning to Virginia State University isn’t just a new chapter — it’s a full-circle moment that began as an HBCU student-athlete walking the same campus halls.

“It’s amazing to be home. It’s really a full circle moment for me,”said Sykes, who hails from nearby Chesapeake, VA and is the daughter of two Norfolk State alumni.

As a two-sport athlete at Virginia State, Sykes saw something powerful: a Black woman leading athletics — Alfreeda Goff — showing her that this career was possible.

“I knew I could work in college athletics because… Alfreeda Goff was a Black woman who was the athletics director there,” Sykes told HBCU Gameday.

Now, Sykes holds the same seat of power, building on the foundation laid by Goff and her predecessor, longtime AD Peggy Davis.

“Being in her footsteps — and following Peggy Davis, my predecessor — is really special.”

Virginia State Football Focused on HBCU Championship Run

The Trojans came heartbreakingly close to a CIAA football title last season. There’s no dancing around the goal this year — it’s championship or bust.

Sykes put two players on the spot at an alumni event ahead of CIAA Media Day.

“I asked Donovan, ‘What can Trojan fans look forward to?’ He said, ‘A championship, Bruno said [he’s] most looking forward to the championship game.”

Their clarity fuels hers.

“My expectations are their expectations — we’re back in Durham to end our season in the championship game and then go on to the NCAA playoffs.”

The message is loud and clear: this program isn’t just competing — it’s coming to win.

HBCU Athletics Built on Presence: Sykes Leads from the Front

Sykes doesn’t just lead Athletics at Virginia State University — she lives it. Whether taking photos with championship teams or pulling up to away games, she’s everywhere her student-athletes are.

“I can’t be an armchair AD. I need to be involved,” she said.

For her, presence isn’t performance — it’s strategy. She knows being hands-on helps uncover gaps, support staff, and elevate the student-athlete experience.

“There are things even a coach has blind spots on… Being present lets me say, ‘Hey, we can do this differently,” Sykes continued.

And that presence builds something just as important as strategy: trust.

“Student-athletes and coaches earn trust when they see that you are around the program.”

Tiffani-Dawn Sykes HBCU Virginia State University
Virginia State University President Boosts HBCU Athletics Culture

Tiffani-Dawn Sykes isn’t the only one fully invested. University President Dr. Makola Abdullah is equally immersed — and it’s making a difference.

“It’s awesome to work for a leader like President Abdullah — transformational, progressive, and sincerely interested in athletics,” Sykes said.

His support goes beyond suits and speeches. He asks coaches about their schemes, learns rosters, and shows up.

“At one event, he came upstairs and did a chalk talk with some of our coaches. He wants to know, ‘What kind of offense do you run? Is defense your thing?”

He’s all in, and not just for show.

“Not just good-looking facilities — he wants the right people leading our young people… and he wants to see what it looks like on film.”

Sykes: HBCU Program at Virginia State Not Ready for D1 Yet

Some Virginia State alumni and many MEAC supporters have been hoping for a move to Division I. Sykes respects the ambition, but she’s focused on the program’s current state.

“There’s not a hint from me on moving to Division I… though there is interest from our alumni.”

With 20 NCAA sports and a growing profile, Virginia State looks like a D1 school in many ways. But that’s not the playbook — not yet.

“People see our sports profile and think that’s a step toward D1. But really, we want to win a national championship in Division II.”

And to do that, she knows what it takes: strategy, structure, and strong financial backing.

“It’s my job to bring in more resources and allocate them properly… I want us to have a nationally recognized athletics program. Once we do that, I’ll entertain the conversation. But right now, I don’t think we’re ready.”

What’s Next for Virginia State and Its HBCU Athletic Vision?

From her legacy-driven return to her sideline presence, Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is building something bigger than a season — she’s building a model.

If Virginia State lives up to its expectations — and if Sykes gets the buy-in she’s working for — this could be the year Trojan athletics doesn’t just win, it arrives.

But for this HBCU legend, the number is only part of the story.

The post HBCU HC Building Legacy as He Nears 100 Career Wins appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

Coach Frazier Chases 100-Win Milestone while at Virginia State

“There were moments I didn’t know if I’d ever coach again,” said Virginia State Head Coach Henry Frazier III. “Now I’m sitting at 98 wins—and I want that hundred.” One hundred wins will cement his legacy as an HBCU coaching icon.

For Frazier, the climb to 100 wins is about more than the number. It’s about redemption, proving HBCU coaches belong in any conversation, and honoring the path he’s walked—from Bowie to Prairie View, from the sidelines to the classroom. “That’s something I want, you know, from a personal standpoint,” he added. “It’s something I’ve worked toward my whole career.”

Frazier’s Mentorship Tree Grows with One More HBCU Coach

“I am proud, man, proud. I couldn’t be more happy for Lamar,” Frazier said, referring to Lamar Manigo, the former Bowie State quarterback who played under him and eventually joined his staff. “It’s not just a branch. I recruited him out of high school.”

That branch is part of a vast coaching tree. “We did a survey a few years ago… over 83 or 84 guys that I’ve coached are coaching now,” he said. “I love to see boys go to men. That’s my ‘why.’”

Henry Frazier III calls it guided discovery. “I want you to have that aha moment. And when it happens, you’re gonna know. I’m gonna know. And I’m gonna say job well done.”

Education, Books, and Brotherhood: Frazier’s HBCU Impact

Frazier’s reach spans every level of education. “I mentor middle school boys… I write children’s books… and I recruit high school guys to college,” he said. “From kindergarten to a college graduate, I have an impact on young people.”

He chairs the fatherhood and mentoring program for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, working with youth at Ernest Everett Just Middle School. “That’s been so rewarding,” he said. “I’m an educator. I got my degree in education.”

Off the field, Frazier finds time to recharge. “I chase the white ball on the golf course. Some days I binge-watch Netflix. That’s how I stay strong.”

Can Virginia State Football Win It All in 2025?

After last season’s 7–4 finish, Frazier knows expectations are high. “We play the top five teams… Fayetteville, Smith, Winston, Union, and Bowie,” he said. “We have no room for error.”

He owns last year’s late-season dip. “We lost four football games by 13 points. That’s on me. Just bad coaching after the bye week. I won’t make that mistake again.”

With five quarterbacks competing to replace Mello, Frazier has his eye on one name. “If we get the right guy in there, which I think we have in R.J. Matthews… we’re gonna be a tough out.”

And if older players don’t step up? “You’ll see a bunch of freshmen playing,” he warned. “Because the goal is to win a championship.”

“We’re good football coaches,” Frazier said with conviction about his HBCU counterparts. “A lot of the white schools look at us and think that we can’t coach ball. We’re gonna just keep proving them wrong.”

Then, after a pause, he added: “I’m not chasing a number—I’m chasing impact. If a hundred wins gets me one more young man who believes in himself, then I’ve done my job.”

A surprise at Virginia State University’s 2025 Spring Commencement turned into a story of pride, energy, and real support for HBCU students.

During the ceremony, VSU launched its now-iconic clacking fans as part of a surprise celebration. Staff placed the fans beneath graduates’ chairs and timed their reveal perfectly. When 803Fresh’s viral hit “Boots On The Ground” blasted through the speakers and hit the line, “Where them fans at?”, graduates leapt up, dancing and waving their fans in celebration.

A video of that moment spread like wildfire. It earned millions of views across social media and caught the attention of national outlets. Within days, students, alumni, and fans everywhere wanted clacking fans of their own.

Virginia State leverages a symbol with purpose

To meet the demand, VSU released a limited batch of 600 fans to the public. Each sale sent $20 directly to the Student Tuition Assistance Fund. Altogether, the effort raised $12,000 to support students facing unexpected financial challenges that could impact their enrollment.

Dr. Gwen Williams Dandridge, Assistant Vice President for Communications at Virginia State, emphasized how a joyful moment evolved into something meaningful. She noted that offering the fans for purchase allowed supporters to relive the celebration while giving back to current students. This initiative, she said, shows how VSU turns school spirit into lasting impact.

Virginia State University is opening new doors for students through the game of golf. With help from the PGA and the White House HBCU Golf Consortium, the university has installed a cutting-edge golf simulator facility.

Located in the Fitness/Wellness Center inside Daniel Gymnasium, the space includes two advanced simulator bays and a professional putting green. It was first unveiled in May, but it’s now gaining momentum as a tool to engage new and returning students this fall.

“This simulator will benefit more than just our athletes,” said Rodney Hall, Deputy Chief of Staff. “It allows us to introduce the game of golf to a wider audience and inspire interest in a global industry.”

One simulator was donated by the PGA. The second came through VSU’s involvement in the national HBCU Golf Consortium. That initiative focuses on increasing diversity in the golf industry and creating career pathways for HBCU students.

The simulator is open to all students, faculty, and staff. For many, it offers their first experience with the sport—and a new way to connect fun, fitness, and future opportunities.

The White House HBCU Golf Consortium

The White House HBCU Golf Consortium works to boost diversity in the golf industry. It connects HBCUs with top golf organizations. The program offers access to simulators, internships, training, and mentorship. Students can explore careers in golf media, business, and technology. It also introduces golf as a fun and inclusive sport.

The Consortium supports both recreation and professional growth. Many students experience golf for the first time through this program. It helps build skills in leadership, communication, and strategy. The goal is to create new pathways in a traditionally exclusive industry. More HBCU students are now stepping into golf careers.

Virginia State University, one of the nation’s leading HBCU institutions, is preparing to unveil a major addition to its campus—the Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons. This modern, multipurpose facility will soon serve as the new home for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Education.

Replacing the demolished Harris Hall and former campus gymnasium, the new academic commons is more than just a classroom building. It will feature a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a fully equipped theatre, and an exhibition gallery, reflecting VSU’s commitment to holistic student development—both inside and outside the classroom.  The approximately 174,000 square feet building will be the largest on campus.

University President Dr. Makola Abdullah emphasized the role the new space will play in supporting student growth at the HBCU.

“The number one thing that we love to see is students learning,” Abdullah said. “We love to see students chasing their dreams and becoming a better version of themselves so they can go out in the community and make a difference. And we believe VSU—and this building—is going to help them do that.”

Faculty and staff are expected to move into the building this August, with classes set to begin there during the spring semester. VSU said it opted for the ribbon-cutting now instead of closer to the beginning of the school year so that members of the Board of Visitors who are rotating off July 1 could take part in the festivities. The Alfred W. Harris Academic Commons is poised to become a cornerstone of academic and cultural life at the historic HBCU.

Virginia State University, one of the Commonwealth’s leading HBCUs, will break ground this month on a new 110,000-square-foot residence hall—the first built on campus in more than a decade. The project aims to meet the record enrollment growth at the HBCU, as student enrollment has now surpassed 5,000 students.

The facility, scheduled to open in spring 2026, will add 454 beds to the university’s housing stock. The expansion is a strategic response by the HBCU to its record growth and limited on-campus accommodations.

Temporary Housing Solutions Prompt Long-Term Investment

In recent years, Virginia State University has faced growing pressure on its housing infrastructure. To keep pace with enrollment, the university has relied on temporary solutions. These have included off-campus apartments, hotel partnerships, and shared accommodations with a nearby community college.

While these measures provided short-term relief, university leaders emphasized the need for a more sustainable approach. “This project is more than just a new residence hall—it’s a statement of our commitment to serving our student population,” said Dr. Alexis Brooks-Walter, Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

Modern Design Prioritizes Student Experience

The new residence hall will be located adjacent to Quad II at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Boisseau Street. The building’s design will feature a combination of double and single suites, study lounges, a multipurpose assembly space, and student parking. Every aspect of the facility is being developed to promote student comfort and academic success.

“Investing in our students is always one of our top priorities,” Dr. Brooks-Walter added.

Strengthening the Campus Community

The addition of the residence hall will support the university’s mission to offer inclusive and student-focused residential life. It also signals a long-term commitment to maintaining housing affordability while fostering a stronger sense of community.

As more students choose HBCU for their academic journeys, Virginia State University’s approach stands out. The new facility not only addresses current housing needs but also positions the campus for continued growth.

With construction set to begin this month, Virginia State is laying a solid foundation for the future, both literally and symbolically.

Shannon Harris, a former quarterback at Tennessee State University, made history Saturday night by becoming the first HBCU graduate to coach a team to a professional sports championship. Harris led the DC Defenders to a record-breaking 58-34 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the 2025 UFL Championship Game.

The Defenders exploded with a 31-6 run in the second quarter, setting the tone for their dominant finish. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was named UFL Championship Game MVP, throwing for a record-setting 390 yards on 21-of-28 passing and four touchdowns. Jaydon Mickens caught six passes for 132 yards, fueling the aerial assault.

Michigan came out strong, scoring on its first two drives to seize a 13-6 lead. DC answered with 25 unanswered points, including a 22-yard field goal and touchdown drives capped by Cornell Powell’s 19-yard grab and Ta’amu’s quarterback sneak on fourth-and-goal. A two-point conversion extended the lead to 23-13. Shortly before halftime, Deon Jackson broke free for a 5-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the advantage to 31-13.

Huge offensive plays set the tone

Although Michigan’s Bryce Perkins connected with Malik Turner for a 71-yard touchdown late in the half, Ta’amu struck again with a 73-yard pass to Ty Scott, giving DC a comfortable 37-19 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, DC secured its lead when Jackson scored from 17 yards out following an interception. Briley Moore added a touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 52-19. Michigan rallied with three consecutive possessions and the benefit of UFL’s 4th-and-12 rule, narrowing the gap to 52-34 before DC’s defense sealed the win with a final touchdown.

The 58 points were the most ever scored in UFL history and signaled a new era for spring football—and for coaches emerging from HBCU programs. Players from Virginia State as well as star receiver Chris Rowland, also from Tennessee State, are also a part of the HBCU legacy of this championship team.

The DC Defenders are heading to the UFL Championship this weekend. Their path to the title game is a powerful story with a layered HBCU storyline. After a 36–18 win over the St. Louis Battlehawks, the Defenders will face the Michigan Panthers for the league title.

Coach Shannon Harris Leads a Historic Moment

Head Coach Shannon Harris is a proud alumnus of Tennessee State University. He took over from Reggie Barlow, an Alabama State alum, who is now the head coach at Tennessee State. Harris is on the brink of history. No HBCU graduate has ever led a professional football team to a league championship as head coach.

As a former quarterback at Tennessee State, Harris made his mark in 2001. That year, he set a school record for total offense in a season with 3,137 yards.

A Quote That Says It All

After the semifinal win, Harris gave credit to those who came before him:
“We owe a lot to Coach Barlow,” Harris said.
“The foundation… been laid from year one, from 2023, and we just followed suit. It came down to us, we and ours… I’m so happy for these guys and the coaching staff that stayed together.”

HBCU Talent Shines on the Field

The roster also features top HBCU talent. Wide receiver Chris Rowland, another Tennessee State alum, was named to the All-UFL First Team this season. Virginia State University is represented by Willie Drew, a former CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, and running back Darius Hagans.

Together, they’re not just chasing a title. They are showcasing the power and promise of HBCU football on a national stage.

Spending 23 hours every day in a jail cell with only one hour of free time gives you plenty of time to think about the choices you’ve made. For Dennis Freeman, most of that time was spent ruminating on the firearms possession charge that had landed him there.

After his release, a judge gave Freeman a choice: find a job or go to school. Though he had fallen in with the wrong crowd, Freeman had always done well in school. So, he started applying to colleges across Virginia.

Few people get a second chance and even fewer are willing to hand them out. When Freeman received his acceptance letter from Virginia State University, he was given the opportunity to turn his life around.

“Getting accepted into Virginia State was one of the most important moments of my life,” said Freeman. “Some people I went to high school with were already going here and were telling me about how great it was. I knew this was where I needed to be.”

Enrolled in 2021

Enrolling in 2021, Freeman became a member of the Residential Royal Court and later joined the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, finally surrounding himself with people who actually wanted what was best for him. He also joined Kultured Men Making A Change, a VSU organization focused on mentoring young African American men.

Freeman had always been entrepreneurial, so when it came time to choose a major, he enrolled in the reputable Reginald F. Lewis College of Business at VSU.

Though his tattoos and past drew skepticism, he soon proved his commitment. His professors were champions of his growth, helping him land internships and launch a fashion business.

Freeman wants to eventually open a one-stop shop store that is heavily involved in the community and allows kids to purchase affordable clothing and be around people who can be a positive influence.

“When I was in jail, I came up with a vision for myself and who I wanted to be,” said Freeman. “Because of Virginia State University, I was able to escape the situation I was in and elevate my life. I am the best version of myself thanks to VSU.”

But adversity didn’t end there. At the start of his senior year, Freeman was hospitalized with an illness and forced to miss the first two months of classes. Used to overcoming challenges, he persevered to graduate on time.

Business Management Degree

So, when Freeman walked across the stage to receive his business management degree, he did so with a 3.17 GPA to complete an improbable journey.

Back when that judge presented Freeman with options, the unspoken third option was going down the same path and returning to life as an inmate. Fortunately, he became a lifelong Trojan instead.

Freeman was among the more than 600 students who graduated during Virginia State University’s two Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 17. The 8:30 a.m. processional/ceremony honored graduates from the College of Education and College of Humanities & Social Sciences, with Virginia Speaker of the House Don Scott delivering the keynote. The 1:30 p.m. processional/ceremony celebrated graduates from the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering & Technology, College of Natural & Health Sciences, and the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business. Virginia Senator Louise Lucas served as the guest speaker.

Virginia State University’s 2025 commencement ceremonies turned into unforgettable celebrations of HBCU culture and unity on Saturday as graduates in both ceremonies broke into the viral “Boots on the Ground” dance—sparked by a surprise moment led by VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah.

The university held two commencement exercises inside the VSU Multipurpose Center. The morning ceremony at 8:30 a.m. honored graduates from the College of Education and the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. The afternoon ceremony at 1:30 p.m. celebrated those graduating from the College of Agriculture, College of Engineering & Technology, College of Natural & Health Sciences, and the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business.

In both ceremonies, just after the turning of the tassels and before students crossed the stage, President Abdullah invited graduates to look beneath their seats. There, they found handheld fans—placed intentionally as a nod to the popular lyric from 803Fresh’s hit: “Where them fans at?”

What made the moment even more adorable on the livestream of the event was the sign language interpreter getting in on the action and dancing on screen.

President Abdullah encouraged the new HBCU graduates to dance along or simply enjoy the moment. As the beat dropped, students erupted into movement, clapping the fans in rhythm and performing the viral “Boots on the Ground” dance. The celebratory interlude lasted about 1 minute and 20 seconds, capturing the joy, pride, and cultural richness of the VSU Class of 2025.

Several are in position to reach the podium.

The 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held May 22–24 at CSU Pueblo’s ThunderBowl in Colorado, will feature a record-setting presence of HBCU athletes. Many enter with top-10 seedings, bringing both momentum and expectations.

Why it matters: More high-ranking qualifiers from HBCUs signals increasing parity and investment in Black college track and field programs.

Top HBCU Sprinters Are Among the Nation’s Best

Freshman Tyson Williams from Johnson C. Smith headlines the men’s sprints, seeded 2nd nationally in the 200m (20.17) and tied for 12th in the 100m (10.21). At Lincoln University (Mo.), veteran Reuben Nichols brings strength in the 200m (22nd, 20.80) and 400m (13th, 46.46).

On the women’s side, Shantae George of Lincoln (Mo.) ranks 6th in the 200m (23.27) and 16th in the 100m (11.43), anchoring both of the school’s nationally ranked relays.

Why it matters: Top seedings from Williams and George could translate into national titles and team points.

HBCU Relay Squads Carry Podium Potential

Lincoln (Mo.) brings depth and speed in relays. The men’s 4x400m team is ranked 2nd (3:06.23), and the women’s 4x400m squad shares the same ranking (3:37.88). The 4x100m relay team is ranked 3rd (45.12), reinforcing Lincoln’s strength in team events.

Why it matters: These relays are built not just for qualifying—but for winning.

SIAC schools have built sprinting powerhouses

Kibren Moore of Albany State is competing in the 100m (15th, 10.25), 200m (7th, 20.51), and the 4x100m relay. Darrian Clarke of Benedict College is seeded 20th in the 200m (20.77), and his team’s 4x100m relay is ranked 6th nationally at 40.18.

Albany State’s Cadence Cray will also race in the 200m (17th, 23.43), while teammate Nathalia Rowe holds the 6th seed in the women’s 400m hurdles (58.83).

Why it matters: These programs are turning conference dominance into national relevance.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU
Mohamed Adoni (right) will look to compete for the national title in the 110m, and 400m hurdles.

Hurdlers Prove HBCUs Can Coach the Details

In technical events like the hurdles, HBCUs have strong representation:

  • Mohamed Adoini (Johnson C. Smith): 110m hurdles (9th), 400m hurdles (10th)
  • Jaevon Riley (Claflin): 400m hurdles (10th)
  • Sharim Hamilton (Lincoln – Mo.): 400m hurdles (13th)
  • Clinton Laguerre (Lincoln – Mo.): 400m hurdles (17th)
  • Jermiah Alibey (Morehouse): 400m hurdles (18th)
  • Shawn Jarrett II (Tuskegee): Also among the top qualifiers
  • Odeshia Nanton (Lincoln – Mo.): Women’s 400m hurdles (11th)

Why it matters: Success in hurdles reflects disciplined coaching and well-rounded athletic development.

Middle-Distance Runners Bring Versatility

In the men’s 400m, Samuel Vessat (Edward Waters) is seeded 8th (46.18), with Michael Simmons Jr. (Morehouse) at 13th (46.42). Zion Murry (Claflin) will compete in the 800m (18th, 1:49.25).

On the women’s side, Shevanae Thomas (Lincoln – Mo.) is 12th in the 400m (53.41), and Kamani Johns (Lincoln – Pa.) is 19th (53.89). Shaneal Clarke-Giddings (Lincoln – Mo.) holds the 13th seed in the 800m (2:07.52).

Why it matters: These athletes add balance to sprint-heavy squads, expanding HBCUs’ scoring potential.

Final Takeaway: HBCUs Are Poised to Make Noise

This year’s championship marks a turning point. HBCUs are sending more top-ranked athletes than ever before. With strong relay teams and individual medal contenders, these programs are no longer underdogs—they’re contenders.

Why it matters: Success at the national level opens doors to funding, recognition, and future recruiting advantages, helping HBCU programs continue to thrive.

PETERSBURG, VA — Virginia State University officially ushered in a new era for its women’s basketball program with the introduction of Millette Green as the seventh head coach at the HBCU. The press conference was filled with celebration, pride, and high expectations, as university officials and Coach Green outlined the vision for the program’s future.

Virginia State President Dr. Makola Abdullah opened the event by extending a warm welcome to Green and crediting Athletic Director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes for her swift and decisive work. “I want to welcome you, Coach Green, to Virginia State University. We are excited to have you here,” he said, praising her passion and experience.

Sykes echoed that enthusiasm.

“When you are identifying a coach, you are looking for a relentless recruiter,” she said. “Coach Green understands that responsibility and accepted the challenge, which is why she is the right fit to lead this program at this time.”

Green arrives with a decorated résumé that includes assistant coaching stints at programs like Wake Forest, William & Mary, and Robert Morris, and a head coaching role at Augusta University. She also brings a deep connection to Virginia.

“Coach Green is a Virginia native… a product of the Boo Williams Summer League,” Sykes noted. “She brings Division II head coaching experience and has helped land a top 25 recruiting class at Wake Forest.”

When Green took the podium, she was visibly moved.

“I’m truly honored, grateful, and blessed to stand before you today as the new head women’s basketball coach at the Virginia State University,” she said. “First, I want to thank President Abdullah, Athletic Director Miss Sykes for believing in me, giving me the opportunity to lead a program with such a rich basketball history.”

Green’s vision for the HBCU extends far beyond the hardwood.

“Yes, I want to win. But more importantly, my purpose is to empower these women to be great on and off the court,” she said. “My ultimate goal is to graduate champions—women who are not just athletes, but future leaders.”

She emphasized a fast-paced, defensive-minded playing style.

“We’re going to play fast, play smart, play with passion… creating pressure, forcing turnovers,” she said. Just as important, she added, is building community. “We will be active and visible in this community. I want you to feel connected to this program and proud to be a part of our journey.”

When asked about her decision to leave Wake Forest, a Power Four program, for a Division II HBCU opportunity, Green was reflective and confident.

“After being there, I realized basketball is the same… they might have more resources, okay, but I can adapt anywhere,” she said. “I was ready to be a head coach. The opportunity presented itself again to come back home… a lot of it was God swinging that instinctive side.”

That mindset, combined with her competitive drive, makes it clear she’s focused on more than just wins — she wants to leave a lasting impact.

“Let’s make history by being the first women’s basketball team at Virginia State University to advance past the first round of the NCAA tournament and compete for a national championship,” she said. “I’m fired up. I’m focused. I’m ready to work. Let’s go make history. Hail State.”

Ettrick, Va. – Millette Green has been announced as the seventh head coach of the Virginia State University Women’s Basketball program by Associate Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Tiffani-Dawn B. Sykes.

“In VSU Athletics, we’re committed to aligning with both departmental and institutional priorities, and that starts with putting students at the center of everything we do,” said Sykes. “We were intentional about identifying a leader who prioritizes the student experience above all else, and Coach Millette Green understands that responsibility.

She has a strong reputation as a recruiter and deep ties within the Commonwealth. As a product of the Boo Williams Summer League, she brings with her the competitive foundation that defines girls’ and women’s basketball in Virginia. I’m excited to welcome her back to the state and to the VSU family.”

Millette Green most recently served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University beginning in the 2022–23 season. While with the Demon Deacons, she oversaw the wing players and, alongside the recruiting director, spearheaded the program’s recruiting efforts. Last season, Wake Forest finished with the second-most three-pointers made in program history, with 227. Helping lead recruiting efforts, the Demon Deacons signed a top-25 recruiting class according to ESPNW during Green’s first season on campus. This marked the first time since the 2014 class that Wake Forest signed multiple top-100 players in the same class and just the second time in the ESPNW era.

“With great honor and gratitude, I am excited to lead the women’s basketball program at Virginia State University,” said Green. “This program has a winning tradition with five CIAA conference championships. I strive to build upon the foundation laid here and compete for championships at every level. I look forward to representing and engaging with the Trojan community.”

Virginia State, HBCU

Prior to her time at Wake Forest, Green served as head coach of the Augusta University Women’s Basketball program (2017–22), top assistant at William & Mary (2013–17), associate head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University (2010–13), assistant coach at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (2008–10), and assistant coach at Robert Morris University (2007–08). While at Augusta, Green helped lead a team that had just four wins in her first season to a 15-win team in her final season.

While at William & Mary, she helped guide the program to some of its best seasons in recent history. In 2016–17, W&M tied a school record with 20 wins, won a CAA Tournament game for the first time since 2009, and advanced to the CAA Semifinals for the first time since 2001. The Tribe also won 11 straight games — the longest single-season streak in school history — from Nov. 18, 2016, to Jan. 2, 2017.

Under her guidance, 27 different players have earned All-Conference honors, and two received Player of the Year awards. In 2007–08, while at Robert Morris University, Sade Logan was named Northeast Conference Player of the Year, and in 2018–19, Asia Harrison was named Peach Belt Freshman of the Year. In the classroom, Coach Green’s teams have also succeeded, with 32 players earning spots on their conference’s All-Academic Team.

Green is a 2003 graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where she was a member of the women’s basketball team. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and an MBA Preparatory Certificate from UMBC. Green began her collegiate career at East Carolina University before transferring to UMBC. She later earned a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Sports Management from Barry University.

Green’s coaching philosophy emphasizes mental and physical toughness, requiring players to prioritize team success over individual accolades. Offensively, her system features a half-court, five-person motion offense that relies on movement, basketball IQ, and rebounding.

Defensively, her teams will employ both half-court and full-court man-to-man defense, aiming to limit offensive rebounds, force tough shots, and create turnovers.

What They Are Saying

Clint Bryant – AD Emeritus, Augusta University
“Virginia State has made an outstanding hire in Head Women’s Basketball Coach Millette Green. I know that my good friend, AD Peggy Davis, would have been proud. Coach Green stands for everything that the student-athlete experience exemplifies. She will do a terrific job leading the program in one of the most competitive conferences in the NCAA.”

Virginia State University announced Wednesday that Head Women’s Basketball Coach Nadine Domond is stepping down from her position to pursue new professional opportunities, bringing an impactful three-year chapter with the Trojans in the CIAA to a close.

Since taking over the program in 2022, Coach Domond compiled a strong 58-28 overall record, including a 35-14 mark in CIAA play and a dominant 5-1 record against longtime rival Virginia Union. Under her leadership, VSU became a consistent force in the conference, making two CIAA Tournament Semifinal appearances (2023, 2024), a run to the CIAA Finals in 2025, and securing an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since 2018.

Her first season laid the groundwork, as the Trojans finished 12-16 overall and advanced to the CIAA quarterfinals with an even 8-8 conference record. The program’s resurgence gained full steam in 2023–24, when VSU posted a 23-win season, broke into the top 10 of the WBCA Coaches Poll, and made a return trip to the CIAA semifinals.

CIAA Division Title

This past season, the Trojans matched their 23-win mark, captured the CIAA Northern Division title, and earned their long-awaited NCAA Tournament bid—marking the first time since 2016–18 that the program achieved back-to-back 20-win seasons.

Coach Domond’s impact extended far beyond the win column. Eight Trojans earned All-CIAA honors during her tenure. In 2025, she was named CIAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year and was featured on the Coaching Excellence Honor Roll. Carmen Kweti was recognized as the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, while standout Amesha Miller received the NCAA’s 50th Anniversary Scholarship a season earlier.

Domond also placed a strong emphasis on academics. She coached three Academic All-District selections and mentored both Carmen Kweti and Anii Harris to become Academic All-American finalists, as recognized by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Most recently, Coach Domond was selected to coach in the inaugural HBCU Women’s All-Star Game, held April 6 in San Antonio, Texas.

Statement from Tiffani-Dawn B. Sykes, Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics:

“We are deeply grateful for the leadership Coach Domond brought to our women’s basketball program. Her influence has been felt not only in the wins she helped produce, but in the personal and academic growth of our student-athletes. She leaves behind a legacy of competitive excellence and mentorship.

The search for our next head coach is underway. We are determined to find a leader who will build on our recent momentum and elevate the program to national prominence. With the support of our administration, alumni, and boosters, we remain fully committed to pushing the Trojans to new heights.”

As VSU begins the next chapter, the impact of Coach Domond’s leadership will remain an enduring part of the program’s foundation.

The NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament bracket has been revealed and a total of five HBCU programs — three from the CIAA alone — will compete for a national title.

CIAA champion Virginia State will be joined in the Atlantic Region by Fayetteville State and Bluefield State University. SIAC champion Savannah State will carry the flag for its HBCU conference. And Lincoln (Missouri) will represent from the GLVC.

Virginia State (21-8) was slotted third in the Atlantic Region. It will take on no. 3 seed West Chester (PA) of the PSAC. VSU is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division II tournament since 2019. It was selected to play in the 2020 tournament that was cut short by COVID-19.

Fayetteville State was awarded an at-large bid, earning no. 4 in the Atlantic Region. It will take on Fairmont State (27-4) of the Mountain East Conference. CIAA foe Virginia Union defeated Fairmont State handily earlier this season. This is Fayetteville State’s first NCAA bid since winning the CIAA in 2022.

Rounding out the CIAA trio is newcomer Bluefield State. BSU went 19-11 in its second season as a member of the CIAA, more than doubling its season win total and going to the CIAA Championship Game for the first time in history before losing to Virginia State. It will take on no. 1 seed and regional host West Liberty which finished 27-4, including a two-point win over Bluefield State early in the season.

Bluefield State, HBCU, NCAA

This marks the first time the CIAA has claimed three bids to the tournament since 2013 when Bowie State, Livingstone College and Winston-Salem State all made it in to an Atlantic Regional hosted at West Liberty.

Savannah State, meanwhile, is the lone representative for the SIAC. SSU was 10-11 after 21 games this season but got red hot just in time, winning eight in a row to claim the league title and the no.8 spot. It will face off against Nova Southeastern, host of the Southern Regional.

Lincoln (MO) is headed back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1981 after winning the GLVC and finishing with a 23-8 record. LUMO will play Lake Superior State in the first round of the Midwest Regional.

Five HBCU basketball teams in the NCAA Division II tournament isn’t unpresedented, but it has been quite a while.

HBCU women

The NCAA Division II men’s basketball tournament bracket has been revealed and a total of three HBCU programs — two from the CIAA — will compete for a national title.

CIAA champion Fayetteville State will be joined in the Atlantic Region by Virginia State. SIAC champion Miles College will carry the flag for its HBCU conference.

Virginia State, CIAA runner-up, received an at-large bid, slotted no. 8 in the Atlantic Region. It will take on no. 1 seed Edinboro of the PSAC, the host of the tournament.

Fayetteville State, the back-to-back CIAA champion, earned the no.7 bid in the Atlantic Region. It will take on Fairmont State (27-4) of the Mountain East Conference.  This marks the return of FSU to the NCAA Tournament after making a multiple-game run last season.

Miles College, meanwhile, is the lone representative for the SIAC. It will take on no. 1 Union.

BALTIMORE, MD – Virginia State University secured the CIAA Championship in a hard-fought 71-64 victory over Bluefield State at CFG Bank Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans, led by head coach Lonnie Blow, overcame a tough opponent and a rollercoaster season to reclaim the conference title for the first time since 2019.

“I’m really, really proud of these young men,” said Blow. “Our season was kind of streaky. We started off slow, 1-3, then went on a long winning streak. Got to conference play, dropped three in a row, but then we got ourselves back on another long run. We came into the tournament with momentum, and we just kept pushing.”

Virginia State (21-8, 12-3 CIAA) leaned on its defense to stifle Bluefield State (19-11, 10-6 CIAA), holding the Big Blue nearly 30 points below their season scoring average. The Trojans dominated the rebounding battle, outworking Bluefield State 52-38 on the boards. Jayson Harris and Davian Coleman each grabbed 12 rebounds, helping VSU limit Bluefield State to just one shot per possession down the stretch.

“Our defense was huge,” Blow emphasized. “We knew they liked to get out and run in transition, so our focus was to make them play against our half-court defense. We wanted to make them work for every basket, and I think we did that.”

Virginia State University, CIAA

The game remained tight throughout, with nine lead changes. Virginia State held a narrow 36-35 lead at halftime before gaining control in the second half behind the play of Jacob Cooper, who finished with 16 points and eight assists. Jared White delivered in key moments, scoring seven of his 11 points in the closing minutes, including a crucial three-pointer that gave VSU the lead for good.

The defining moment came when Jaedan Jefferson ignited the crowd with a fast-break dunk, shifting momentum firmly in favor of the Trojans. “Jaden, that’s my guy, man,” Cooper said. “I stay on him to always be ready for the moment, and he couldn’t have been more ready today. He told me he wasn’t losing, and that’s the mentality we all had.”

For Blow, the championship held even deeper significance. It was a tribute to former Virginia State athletic director Peggy Davis, who passed away earlier on Oct. 16. “Miss Davis brought me to Virginia State,” he reflected. “I know she’s smiling down on us from heaven. This championship is for her.”

Virginia State University now turns its focus to the NCAA Division II Tournament, where they hope to continue their run. “We’re going to take a day to rest and get back in the gym,” Blow said. “This is a special win, but we’re not done yet.”

HBCU sports is built on legacy, and few stories encapsulate that legacy more than Tiffani-Dawn Sykes’ return to Virginia State University as the Assistant Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics. On her 45th birthday, in the heart of the CIAA Tournament in Baltimore—close to where she has been working at the University of Maryland—Sykes’ appointment was announced. It is a fitting homecoming, as she takes over for the late, great Peggy Davis at her alma mater.

From student-athlete to the head of Trojan athletics, Sykes’ journey has been a whirlwind of experience, preparation, and destiny. A proud graduate of Virginia State, she got her first taste of the administrative side of sports while watching trailblazing Black women like Alfreeda Goff and Peggy Davis lead the program. That experience lit a fire in her, one that took her across the HBCU landscape—from St. Paul’s to Virginia Union, from the CIAA headquarters back to Grambling State, and from Florida A&M to Maryland.

But as fate would have it, the road always led back to Ettrick, Virginia.

“It feels amazing,” Sykes said in a sit-down interview with HBCU Gameday at the CIAA Tournament. “My passion for college athletics was really ignited at Virginia State when Alfreeda Goff was the athletic director my freshman year. It was a Black woman. And of course, succeeding Peggy Davis, another strong Black woman in that role… It just means so, so much to me.”

Davis’ legacy at Virginia State is undeniable. She won a CIAA women’s basketball championship before taking over as athletic director and transforming VSU into a model of success. Under her watch, Trojan athletics expanded, thrived, and set a standard that Sykes now has the opportunity—and the responsibility—to uphold.

There’s no question that following a giant like Davis comes with pressure, but Sykes isn’t backing down from the challenge.

“It’s quite a bit of pressure,” she admitted. “She was a really great administrator, enjoyed a lot of success, and was really progressive. As recently as a few years ago, she added lacrosse and soccer, both men’s and women’s, to the plate of opportunities at Virginia State.”

Sykes spent her Friday afternoon sitting courtside with her new boss — President Makola Abdullah — and cheering on her alma mater as both the men’s and women’s teams competed for spots in the CIAA title game. Both teams won their respective games and will play for titles on Saturday.

Clearly Tiffani-Dawn Sykes is stepping into the role at a pivotal time. Virginia State’s athletic programs have remained competitive, with football making a CIAA title game appearance last fall. Looking ahead, her focus is on taking the Trojans to prominence on a national level—CIAA championships, regional dominance, and a national presence.

“I want Virginia State to be in these conversations. When people are looking back and talking about the history and the tradition and the legacy of the CIAA and they’re mentioning Virginia State University as a national championship team.”

It all came together on her birthday, at the CIAA Tournament, in the same city where she had recently worked. It was more than an announcement—it was a moment of poetic symmetry for Sykes, who was born during the CIAA Tournament as was the first woman PA announcer in the conference tournament’s storied history. Her story testament to the power of HBCUs in shaping lives and finding the right fit.

For Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, the assignment is clear. Virginia State’s motto is “Greater Happens Here.” Now, she has the chance to leave her stamp on the university once more.

Virginia State University proudly announces that VSU alumna Tiffani-Dawn Sykes has been hired as the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at the HBCU. Sykes, a 2001 VSU graduate, brings more than 20 years of progressive leadership in college athletics to the position.

“I am honored to return to Virginia State University, where Greater Happens Here, as the Associate Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics,” said Sykes. “I want to thank President Abdullah and the search committee for their trust and confidence in me to lead Trojan Athletics.”

Sykes returns to the University after most recently serving as a player development assistant and advisor to the head football coach for the University of Maryland. She also served as the Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Florida A&M University from 2023-2024, making history as the first woman to hold the position. Sykes also had prominent roles in athletics at multiple Division I and Division II institutions.

During her career, Sykes has displayed an unwavering commitment to fostering an environment of empowerment, accountability, and excellence. Now, her next chapter will be to continue instilling that same philosophy at her alma mater.

“Virginia State University athletics has a long history of excellence, and I am confident in Tiffani-Dawn Sykes’ ability to uphold that tradition,” said VSU President Dr. Makola M. Abdullah. “Her values, vision, professional experience, and passion for our University made her a perfect fit for this role. We are extremely fortunate to have her back home as a member of our Trojan Family.”

Sykes has served on several NCAA committees throughout her career, including:

  • NCAA Leaders and Legends Selection Committee
  • NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute Selection Committee
  • NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee
  • NCAA Division II Track & Field Regional Ranking Committee
  • NCAA Women’s Tennis Regional Ranking Committee

She has also earned multiple awards for her work in college athletics, notably the:

  • 2024 Women Leaders NIKE Executive of the Year (DI-FCS)
  • 2024 Bob Hayes Invitational Track & Field Meet Community Service Award
  • 2024 City of Tallahassee Community Champion Award
  • 2023 Lights on Sports FCS AD of the Year

Additionally, Sykes participated in the NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute in 2007, a prestigious program that supports the professional development of minority athletics administrators. In 2023, she completed the NCAA Pathway Program, the most competitive and exclusive program that the NCAA offers. The pathway program prepares senior-level athletics administrators to take the next step in their careers to become athletics directors or conference commissioners.

Sykes holds a Master of Science in Sports Administration from Grambling State University and a Bachelor’s in Health and Physical Education from VSU. During her time as a Trojan, Sykes was a team captain and four-year starter for the University’s volleyball team. She was also a letter-winner on the HBCU track and field team.

“My experiences as a student-athlete at VSU ignited my passion for college athletics, and the education I received here laid the foundation for a fulfilling and progressive career,” said Sykes. “I am excited to continue leading our student-athletes, coaches, and staff in the pursuit of national excellence—both in the classroom and in competition.”

Sykes, who will begin her position on March 31, will succeed the late Peggy Davis, who dedicated nearly 30 years to Trojan Athletics and left a lasting legacy before her passing in October 2024.

VSU is excited to welcome Tiffani-Dawn Sykes back to the HBCU campus, where we will support her as she takes our Athletics Department to new heights and continues to champion student-athlete success.

Virginia State University (VSU) is the latest HBCU to officially join the elite ranks of R2-designated institutions, a distinction held by only 139 universities nationwide and fewer than 15 HBCUs. This prestigious designation, awarded by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, recognizes universities with high research activity and significant doctoral degree production. With this achievement, Virginia State University strengthens its position as a leader in research, innovation, and graduate education among HBCUs.

“This is a significant milestone for Virginia State University,” said Dr. Omar Faison, Vice Provost for Research & Economic Development. “Achieving R2 status signals to federal agencies, industry partners, and prospective students that VSU is a leader in innovation, discovery, and advanced scholarship.”

Abdullah, Virginia State University, HBCU

Attaining R2 status highlights VSU’s continued investment in research infrastructure, faculty excellence, and external grant funding. The university has demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding doctoral programs and fostering a culture of academic excellence. “This designation is a testament to the outstanding work of our faculty to secure competitive research funding and provide greater opportunities for our students to engage in groundbreaking and impactful work,” said Dr. Tia Minnis, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs.

As an R2 institution, Virginia State University is poised to enhance its impact in key research areas such as agriculture, health outcomes, computer and data science, advanced manufacturing, and STEM education. This recognition not only boosts the reputation of the HBCU but also expands opportunities for students and faculty to participate in cutting-edge research initiatives.

With this achievement, Virginia State University reaffirms its commitment to innovation and transformative research opportunities. To learn more about VSU’s research initiatives, visit vsu.edu/research.

ETTRICK, Va. – After a strong 2024 season that saw Virginia State claim the CIAA regular-season title before falling to Virginia Union in the championship game, head coach Dr. Henry Frazier III has announced a series of staff changes ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Leading the list of additions is Rahmann Lee, who will serve as the new offensive coordinator. Lee arrives from West Virginia State, where he helped guide an explosive offense that ranked among the nation’s top 25 in both rushing yards per game (194.7) and points per game (33.2). Under his leadership, WVSU produced four All-Mountain East Conference players. Before his tenure there, Lee made stops at ASA Miami, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and his alma mater, Glenville State, where he was a record-setting running back.

Virginia State has also made several internal promotions and adjustments to the coaching staff. Carlos Fields will add assistant head coach to his existing role as defensive coordinator. Fields, a former standout at Winston-Salem State and NFL linebacker, has been instrumental in shaping the Trojans’ defensive identity.

On the offensive side, Kris Wilson has been named run game coordinator, while Jerome Jeter will take over as pass game coordinator. Bryce Bradley will oversee the defensive pass game, ensuring the Trojans continue their dominance in the secondary.

Additionally, Ariella Ellis has been appointed pro liaison, a key role in assisting players with professional opportunities at the next level.

With these changes in place, Virginia State looks to build upon last season’s success and take the next step toward reclaiming the CIAA championship in 2025.

HBCU football continues to make waves on the national stage, as standout players from historically Black colleges and universities earned top honors in the NCAA Division II Super Region Two awards for 2024. Headlining the accolades is Jada Byers, Virginia Union University’s record-breaking running back, who was named Offensive Player of the Year.

Byers’ historic season cemented his legacy as one of the greatest to ever wear a Virginia Union uniform. Already VUU’s all-time leading rusher with 5,965 career yards and 77 touchdowns, Byers elevated his game even further in 2024. He rushed for 1,947 yards, breaking his own school record, and ranked second nationally in both rushing yards and touchdowns (26). His explosive performances propelled Virginia Union to its second CIAA championship appearance in three years and secured his spot as one of eight finalists for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy. Byers’ dominance reflects the rich tradition of HBCU excellence in athletics, as he shattered expectations and etched his name in both school and conference history.

The All-Super Region Two First Team also featured several other HBCU stars, highlighting the depth of talent across these programs. From Virginia State, offensive lineman Bruno Onwuazor earned a spot for his role in anchoring one of the conference’s most efficient offenses. Meanwhile, Clark Atlanta University wide receiver Armonte Harris was recognized for his dynamic ability to stretch the field, showcasing why he is one of the top receivers in the SIAC. Joining him was Brevin Caldwell of Johnson C. Smith University.

On the defensive side, Bowie State linebacker Saliq Salawu represented the Bulldogs with distinction. Known for his physicality and leadership, Janack consistently disrupted opposing offenses, earning his place among the region’s best. Johnson C. Smith linebacker Benari Black left his mark as well.

These honors not only celebrate individual achievements but also highlight the growing recognition of HBCU football within Division II. Players like Byers, Black, and Caldwell continue to elevate their programs and inspire future generations. As HBCUs assert their place on the national stage, their athletes prove that they belong among the elite, carrying on a legacy of excellence that resonates far beyond the gridiron.

The 2024 football season in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) thrilled fans with a showcase of talent. This talent came from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The season featured standout performances. Records were broken. There were unexpected twists. It highlighted the strength and competitiveness of HBCU football programs within the CIAA. Here’s a comprehensive team-by-team evaluation, incorporating key statistics, notable games, and standout players.

Virginia Union University (Grade: A+)

  • Preseason Rank: 2nd
  • Final Standing: 1st (6-1 conference, 7-3 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 1st in Total Offense (479.4 yards/game, 61 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 4th in Total Defense (295.2 yards/game, 22 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

  • Jada Byers, the CIAA Offensive Player of the Year, dominated the field, amassing 1,497 rushing yards and 23 touchdowns. He set school records with 5,311 career rushing yards and 70 touchdowns. This includes a single-game record of 324 yards and six touchdowns against Bowie State.
  • Virginia Union clinched the CIAA Championship, defeating Virginia State in a decisive victory.
  • The Panthers secured a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs, representing HBCUs on the national stage.
  • VUU’s loss to Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU), did not count as conference defeats due to CIAA scheduling rules impacted by St. Augustine’s absence from football this year.

Summary: Virginia Union showcased exceptional prowess on both offense and defense, leading the CIAA. This reinforced its status as a powerhouse among HBCU football programs.

JCSU, CIAA, HBCU Gameday
Johnson C. Smith started the season hot but ended ice cold.

Johnson C. Smith University (Grade: A)

  • Preseason Rank: 4th
  • Final Standing: 2nd (5-2conference, 8-2 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 3rd in Total Offense (378.4 yards/game, 32 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 1st in Total Defense (246.2 yards/game, 17 TDs allowed)

  • Head Coach Maurice Flowers was named CIAA Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Bulls to an impressive season.
  • Benari Black, the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, led a stout defense with 113 tackles. He spearheaded the top-ranked defense in the conference.
  • JCSU achieved significant victories over Tuskegee and Morehouse from the SIAC, and delivered Virginia Union their only on-field CIAA loss.
  • Despite their strong performance, they suffered a crucial conference loss to Fayetteville State.

Summary: JCSU exceeded preseason expectations. They solidified their reputation within the CIAA and HBCU football. The team combined a formidable defense with strategic coaching. This made them one of the season’s standout teams.

Virginia State University (Grade: B)

  • Preseason Rank: 1st
  • Final Standing: 3rd (6-1 conference, 7-4 overall)
  • Offensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Offense (385.7 yards/game, 43 TDs)
  • Defensive Ranking: 2nd in Total Defense (283.5 yards/game, 19 TDs allowed)

Highlights:

  • The Trojans secured a notable win against Benedict from the SIAC.
  • Bruno Onwuazor earned CIAA Lineman of the Year, contributing to an offense that averaged 6.3 yards per play.
  • Defensive Rookie of the Year, Marquis Edmond, bolstered an already strong defense.
  • Virginia State’s only victory over a team with a winning record was against Benedict, limiting their impact against top-tier opponents.

Summary: Virginia State showed statistical strength. However, they fell short in securing wins against leading teams within the CIAA. This impacted their overall grade. This happened despite their perfect conference record adjusted by CIAA rules.

Post-game altercations AKA brawls were a theme this weekend in HBCU football — and the CIAA Championship Game was no exception.

The conference title game of the CIAA between Virginia Union and Virginia State — two schools separated by less than 30 minutes — was chippy one. And that continued after the whistle sounded on Virginia Union’s 17-13 win. Several players engaged in postgame fisticuffs, prompting a statement from the league’s commissioner.

“I am disappointed and heartbroken regarding the behaviors of two of our best teams at the conclusion of our 107th football championship,” said CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams Parker.   “The conference will investigate and manage per its bylaws and processes for unsportsmanlike behavior and misconduct.

“It is disappointing that our story and narrative for this championship did not end with the story that should be told as part of the CIAA legacy, leadership and community.”

The CIAA title game was one of several pivotal HBCU football contests marred by brawls after the fact.

Things kicked off with North Carolina Central and Howard on Friday night, with both players and coaches involved in the action, which was broadcast live on ESPNU. MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills issued a statement on Saturday, promising an investigation of the incident.

And moments after Jackson State clinched the SWAC East title with a win over Alabama State, the two sides broke out into a brawl in the middle of the field. Alabama State AD Dr. Jason Caple released a statement as well.

While the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was promoted as the big fight this weekend, apparently HBCU football games signed up to be on the undercard.

Virginia Union held off Virginia State in a gritty 17-13 battle to claim the CIAA Championship in Salem, Virginia, securing back-to-back titles in an HBCU title bout. The victory, powered by the relentless ground game led by Jada Byers and a staunch defensive stand, solidified the Panthers’ dominance in the conference as they now await word on their potential berth in the NCAA Division II playoffs.

The Panthers struck early, with Byers capping an eight-play, 94-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Virginia State answered with a field goal in the second, but Brady Myers’ 22-yard kick just before halftime gave Virginia Union a 10-3 lead.

In the third quarter, Virginia State’s Romelo Williams connected with Tylique Ray for a seven-yard touchdown to tie the game between the two Virginia HBCUs at 10-10. The momentum seemed to shift, but Virginia Union responded early in the fourth. Quarterback Mark Wright found Reginald Vick Jr. on a 23-yard strike, giving the Panthers a 17-10 edge.

Virginia State clawed back with a field goal, narrowing the gap to 17-13 midway through the final quarter. The Trojans’ final drive reached Virginia Union territory, but the Panthers’ defense stiffened, forcing a turnover on downs with less than a minute remaining. Roberto Alvarez sealed the victory with a late interception.

Byers — the CIAA Offensive Player ofThe Year– was a workhorse for the Panthers, rushing for 178 yards and a touchdown, while the defense recorded seven tackles for loss, including two sacks. The win not only crowned Virginia Union as champions but also underscored their resilience and ability to thrive under pressure.

Now 8-3, Virginia Union awaits the NCAA playoff selection. The HBCU squad is hopeful for an opportunity to extend its season and showcase their championship pedigree on a national stage for the third consecutive year.

In Super Region II of the NCAA Division II Regional Rankings, four HBCU football programs are in the mix for playoff contention as we head into the final week before the field is announced. With only the top seven teams earning a playoff spot, each HBCU’s Week 11 outcome will be pivotal in determining their postseason fate. Here’s where things stand:

1. Miles College (6th, 8-1 overall, 8-1 in-region) – Miles holds a critical advantage as it will compete in the SIAC Football Championship game against Clark Atlanta this week. A win here would solidify its position in the top seven, while a loss could endanger its playoff spot. Currently, it is in control of its own destiny.

2. Johnson C. Smith University (7th, 8-2 overall, 8-2 in-region) – JCSU is clinging to the seventh and final NCAA playoff spot, but it will be idle this week after dropping a game to Livingstone. This leaves its fate partially in the hands of other teams’ performances. Johnson C. Smith needs key teams, like Virginia Union and West Florida, to falter if they hope to hold their position in the final playoff bracket.

3. Virginia Union University (9th, 7-2 overall, 6-1 in-region) – Virginia Union has a crucial opportunity to improve its standing as it faces Virginia State in the CIAA Championship game. A win could boost it into playoff position, depending on how other results fall. It’ll be aiming to move past Johnson C. Smith, taking advantage of JCSU’s idle week despite the fact it lost the head-to-head matchup with it.

Kairon Martin, HBCU Gameday, WSSU

4. Winston-Salem State University (10th, 7-2 overall, 6-2 in-region) – Winston-Salem State dropped in the rankings despite a thrilling 37-31 overtime victory over Fayetteville State. Like Johnson C. Smith, WSSU will be idle this week, limiting its ability to make a final impression. It will be watching the outcomes of the SIAC and CIAA championships closely, hoping for results that might create an opening for it.

With two of these four HBCU football programs (Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State) idle, their NCAA playoff hopes will rest largely on the performances of Miles and Virginia Union. This week’s results will be decisive in determining which HBCUs make it into the playoff field. For more insights on team scenarios and standings, check HBCUGameday.com for the latest updates.

In a high-stakes matchup at Rogers Stadium, Virginia State pulled off a 35-28 victory over Virginia Union, igniting excitement for an upcoming HBCU rivalry rematch in the CIAA Championship.

Virginia State’s win was as thrilling as it was essential; their championship hopes depended on Johnson C. Smith’s unexpected 15-10 loss to Livingstone College in the longest HBCU football rivalry, which allowed them to advance to the CIAA title game. Meanwhile, Virginia Union had already punched its ticket with a resounding 91-0 win over Bluefield State the week prior, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

Virginia State, CIAA

Virginia State struck first when Romelo Williams connected with Tayshaun Porter for a 38-yard touchdown, setting the tone for an aggressive offensive showing. Despite Virginia Union responding with a field goal and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Mark Wright to Reginald Vick Jr., Virginia State continued to surge. Williams showcased his versatility, rushing for a 1-yard touchdown just before halftime, bringing the score to 21-13. In the third quarter, Virginia Union’s Jada Byers made a statement with a powerful 2-yard touchdown run, leveling the score at 21-21 and adding intensity to the rivalry clash.

But Virginia State’s offense didn’t falter. Williams’ deep pass to Malik Hunter for a 91-yard touchdown electrified the crowd and put the Trojans back in control. Shortly afterward, a 23-yard rushing touchdown by Jimmyll Williams extended their lead to 35-21, and Virginia State’s defense held strong against Virginia Union’s final attempts. Though Virginia Union narrowed the gap with a fourth-quarter touchdown, they couldn’t overcome a late interception that sealed Virginia State’s hard-fought victory.

The win marked a thrilling chapter in their rivalry, with both teams now readying for a climactic rematch in the CIAA Championship on November 17 in Salem, Virginia, where pride, history, and the championship title will be on the line for the two Virginia HBCU programs.

Charlotte, NC – With week 9 of football in the rearview and a pivotal week 10 on the horizon, one team in the conference has solidified a spot in the 2024 CIAA Football Championship (Nov. 16th – Salem, VA) with others in tight contention. As it stands, Virginia Union University, Johnson C Smith University & Virginia State University sit in first, second and third place respectively. Regardless of how Week 10 plays out, VUU has already earned a spot in the CIAA Championship, however, final seedings and regular season champions are yet to be finalized.

Lets take a look below at the possible week 10 scenarios:

CIAA Virginia Union Johnson C Smith Virginia State

1. If VUU wins & JCSU wins: Both teams would advance to the Championship. At 7-0, Virginia Union would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. At 6-1, Johnson C Smith would earn the #2 seed. Note, with the adjusted 7-game conference schedule, the VUU vs. JCSU game that took place on September 21st was denoted a conference game for JCSU only and not VUU.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

2. If VUU wins, JCSU loses & WSSU wins: At 7-0, VUU would win the regular season and be the #1 seed in the Championship. JCSU, VSU & WSSU would be tied at 5-2, however, JCSU would advance as determined by head-to-head against both VSU & WSSU.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (7-0) vs. #2 JCSU (5-2)

3. If VUU loses & JCSU loses: VSU & VUU will both advance to the Championship. With both teams at 6-1, they would be co-champions of the regular season and Virginia State would be the #1 seed in the Championship as determined by head-to-head.
Championship Game: #1 VSU (6-1) vs. #2 VUU (6-1)

4. If VUU loses & JCSU wins: VSU, VUU & JCSU would be co-champions of the regular season, however, this creates a 3-way tie for Championship consideration. To determine who moves on to the Championship, the first tiebreaker is winning percentage within the 7-game conference schedule, with each team at 6-1, all would be tied. The next tiebreaker is head-to-head competition, also, within the 7-game conference schedule. In this case, because VSU, VUU & JCSU did not all compete head-to-head within the 7-game conference schedule, head-to-head competition cannot be considered. The next tie breaker is point differential against common opponents. VSU, VUU & JCSU only had one common opponent, Bluefield State. At +91, VUU would move on to the Championship. VSU & JCSU remain tied +39. With only VSU & JCSU in contention for the final Championship spot, the tie breaker procedures reset between the two teams. The first tiebreaker, conference winning percentage, would remain tied. However, the second tiebreaker, head-to-head favors JCSU. JCSU would move on to the Championship as the #2 seed.
Championship Game: #1 VUU (6-1) vs. #2 JCSU (6-1)

HBCU Virginia State University (VSU) displayed their prowess in a dominating 55-0 victory over Lincoln University (PA) at LU Football Stadium.

VSU took control early, scoring four touchdowns in the first quarter alone, setting the tone for a game that would cement their position in HBCU football. Romelo Williams led VSU’s offense, contributing two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, while their defense kept Lincoln scoreless throughout the game. This decisive win underscored VSU’s strength and depth as an HBCU program, with contributions across offense, defense, and special teams.

HBCU, Virginia State

By halftime, VSU had amassed a 41-0 lead, showcasing why they are a force within HBCU athletics. Lincoln struggled to mount any substantial offensive drives, managing only 20 passing yards and 32 rushing yards for the entire game. Meanwhile, VSU recorded 397 total offensive yards, with standout performances from players like Marquis Smith and Kevin Gayles, each securing receiving touchdowns. The game highlighted VSU’s defensive tenacity, especially through KJ McNeil, who scored on a fumble recovery in the first quarter, further extending VSU’s lead.

VSU’s victory over Lincoln not only reflects the school’s commitment to excellence in HBCU sports but also sets up an exciting showdown.

With this win, Virginia State University (6-3, 5-1 CIAA) will host Virginia Union University on Saturday, Nov. 9. The stakes are high, as both HBCUs will compete for a chance to advance to the CIAA championship game. This upcoming matchup promises to be a thrilling contest between two historic rival programs, with a championship bid on the line.

Winston-Salem State University and Miles College have both maintained strong showings, ranking within the top five overall. Winston-Salem State ranks highly in Musicality and Drill and Design, showing their consistent strength across categories. About the judges

No adjudicator is allowed to judge (Musicality, Pictures, Drill and Design, Percussion, Drum Majors, and Auxiliary) in a category more than once in a regular season. In summary, each of the five major adjudication areas will all have different judges for each month of the regular season. For example, if a committee member judges Musicality in Division I in September, he/she will not be able to judge that category in October or November. They will move to a different category in the next month. This has been a standard practice of the committee since the inaugural BOTY.

Other than the BOTY Committee Chairs, none of the adjudicators know the final results of the “overall” monthly rankings until they are made public by ESPN and HBCUGameday. Once adjudicators have reviewed videos, they submit scores individually and electronically without group or committee conversation. Any discussion or conversation regarding the rankings must be conducted through our chairs prior to reviewing or scoring the bands.

Auxiliary scores are based on the median or “average” of the combined totals. If the majorettes score 29, the flags 30, and dancers 31, the total auxiliary score is 30. If the dancers score 29 and the flags score 30, the total auxiliary score is 29.5. If a team only has one auxiliary unit that scores 30, their final score is 30. The units with multiple auxiliaries do not get extra points.

Adjudicators (thus far) for the College/HBCU and High School BOTY include:

Dr. Julian White, Florida A&M University, Director of Bands Emeritus
Professor Dowell Taylor, Jackson State University, Director of Bands Emeritus
Professor Lawrence Jackson, Southern University, Director of Bands Emeritus

What’s Next for ESPN Band of the Year?

With just a few months until the final showdown in Atlanta, the 2024 ESPN Band of the Year competition is closer than ever. Each performance now counts as bands refine their shows and push for a spot in the top rankings. The top two Division I bands will compete on December 13 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, right before the Cricket Celebration Bowl, for the ultimate title.

The Top five band bands at the top of our cumulative rankings in November will all be in the running to come to Atlanta for the BOTY competition. Their ranking position in the polls will be the number one factor in receiving an invitation to Atlanta. However, the BOTY committee can also consider other intangibles as it relates to the selection of the final two bands. The goal for every band is to make it to the Top 5 in November, so they can be a part of the conversation to come to Atlanta.

“This season’s BOTY promises to be one of the best yet,” said Professor Dowell Taylor, Jackson State University Director Emeritus and ESPN BOTY Chair. “Even at this early stage in the process, the renewed emphasis on the halftime field experience and the overall musical presentation has been phenomenal and very encouraging. Because most bands are so very close in the ratings. this will be a grueling process and labor of love for the adjudicators. And this is what it’s all about.”

To catch all the action, follow the ESPN Band of the Year competition through HBCU Gameday and ESPN platforms, where you’ll find monthly updates and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. HBCU fans are watching closely as the 2024 CIAA football season enters its final stretch. The race for the championship is down to the wire as Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Virginia State position themselves for a spot in the CIAA Championship Game. With only two weeks left, the stakes are higher than ever, and every game counts.

The Top Contenders

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. Their final regular-season matchup is against Virginia State, a game with massive implications for both teams.

Virginia State stands at 4-1 in the CIAA, with a 5-3 overall record. It faced Winston-Salem State but took a loss in a game that didn’t impact its conference standings. This gives Virginia State an extra boost in their run for the title. Their season-ender against Virginia Union will be one of the most anticipated games of the season, as both teams are fighting for a top-two finish.

Winston-Salem State is not technically out of contention with a 4-2 conference record and a 6-3 overall record. While it has had a strong season, a recent loss has put them just a step behind the top three contenders. It would need the three teams ahead of it to end the season with two conference losses as its win at Virginia State earlier in the season didn’t count as a loss for VSU.

Remaining Challenges and Final Games

Johnson C. Smith faces Fayetteville State next, a team with a strong championship history, having been a staple in the CIAA Championship Game for the past few seasons. This could be Johnson C. Smith’s toughest game yet, as Fayetteville State is known for delivering under high-stakes situations. After that, Johnson C. Smith closes their regular season against Livingstone in a classic rivalry game that could add one final twist to their undefeated run.

Johnson C. Smith, HBCU Gameday, CIAA

For Virginia Union and Virginia State, their season-ending showdown could be a de facto playoff. If both teams maintain their records, this game will likely decide who earns a championship slot. The potential for an intense battle adds further excitement to an already competitive season.

CIAA Championship Hopes on the Line

As the 2024 CIAA season races toward its conclusion, these HBCU teams are each pushing to secure their place in the championship. With only two spots available, every play, every drive, and every game could shape the final outcome. While Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union are currently in control, the unpredictable nature of college football means that anything can happen in these final weeks.

Whoever prevails will not only earn the CIAA title but also bring pride to their HBCU, representing the top level of talent and competition in the conference.

As we head into Week Eight of CIAA football, the standings reflect a dynamic and competitive season in HBCU football, shaped by both strong performances and significant off-field developments. Johnson C. Smith leads the way, undefeated at 7-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play after being Shaw on Saturday, solidifying its position as one of the top HBCU programs this year. Virginia Union, also 4-0 in the CIAA and 5-2 overall, has emerged as another dominant force, riding a four-game win streak.

A key factor affecting the standings this season has been the loss of Saint Augustine’s football program. Their absence has caused the league to shift from an eight-game conference format to seven-games. Notably, Virginia Union and Virginia State both benefitted when their Week Three losses to CIAA opponents did not count toward conference standings due to the adjustments. Virginia Union’s loss to Johnson C. Smith and Virginia State’s loss to Winston-Salem State were both excluded from the CIAA record, keeping both teams in a strong position despite early setbacks. The wins did count for JCSU and WSSU, who are set to meet on Saturday for a showdown that could go a long way to determining who makes the CIAA title game.

Winston-Salem State remains in the hunt with a 4-1 conference record and 6-2 overall, trailing closely behind Johnson C. Smith and Virginia Union. Virginia State, despite a 4-3 overall record, is 3-1 in conference play and still a strong contender as the season progresses.

Meanwhile, other HBCU programs like Livingstone (3-2 CIAA) and Shaw (2-3 CIAA) are trying to find consistency as they navigate a tough schedule.

Fayetteville State, Bowie State — two longtime Division II HBCU powers — and others are working to turn their seasons around and play spoiler. As we head into the final stretch, the CIAA standings reflect the resilience and competitiveness of these HBCU teams, each vying for a chance to make their mark in a season defined by change and opportunity.

Words cannot fully capture what Mrs. Davis meant to Virginia State University. She was a beacon of hope, an inspiring leader, and a champion for our student-athletes, always working to ensure their success in the classroom, in their athletic pursuits, and after graduation. Under her leadership, the Trojans earned twenty NCAA Division II tournament appearances, twenty-six CIAA Championship titles, twenty CIAA Divisional titles, and forty-four Coach of the Year honors.

On behalf of the entire VSU community, the administration extends its deepest sympathies for this tremendous loss. We know you join us in expressing our condolences to Mrs. Davis’ family, friends, the athletic department, and the Trojan family. In a key HBCU football matchup, the Virginia State Trojans secured a 38-17 victory over the Bowie State Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Stadium. With the win, Virginia State improved to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA, keeping its slim conference championship hopes alive. Meanwhile, Bowie State’s loss drops them to 1-5 on the season and 1-3 in CIAA play, dimming their postseason chances and adding to the challenges in this competitive HBCU football season.

Virginia State started fast, building a 24-0 lead by halftime. Quarterback Romelo Williams spearheaded the Trojans’ offense, throwing for 291 yards and two touchdowns. Early in the first quarter, Williams connected with Ajenavi Byrd for a 37-yard touchdown, followed by a 47-yard strike to Malik Hunter, pushing Virginia State ahead 14-0. Jimmyll Williams added a 1-yard rushing touchdown just before halftime, extending the lead to 24-0.

Bowie State showed signs of life in the second half. Curtis Murray scored on a 3-yard touchdown run with 11:31 remaining in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 24-7. However, Virginia State quickly responded with an 11-yard touchdown scramble by Romelo Williams, followed by another rushing touchdown from Jimmyll Williams, making it 38-7.

The Bulldogs continued to fight in the fourth quarter. Kevin Taylor capped a 64-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, narrowing the score to 38-17 with 6:04 left in the game. Despite their late push, Bowie State’s struggles on third down—converting only 1 of 11 attempts—hampered their comeback effort. Virginia State, meanwhile, was efficient, converting 8 of 18 third downs to control the tempo.

Micah Robinson led the Bowie State offense, rushing for 33 yards and adding 32 receiving yards. Murray contributed 31 rushing yards along with his touchdown, and Joseph Towler recorded 54 receiving yards for the Bulldogs. On defense, Jamal Jones delivered two sacks, a forced fumble, and five total tackles, while the unit as a whole recorded four sacks and eight tackles for loss, limiting Virginia State to 130 rushing yards.

This win keeps Virginia State’s CIAA title hopes alive, improving their conference record to 2-1. Bowie State, now 1-3 in CIAA play, faces a tough path ahead to remain competitive. Both teams will look to regroup as they continue through the HBCU football season.

Bowie State returns home next week to face Bluefield State for their homecoming game on October 19 at Bulldogs Stadium. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on HBCU GO TV. Meanwhile, Virginia State aims to carry the momentum forward as they continue their pursuit of the CIAA championship.

Virginia State and Bowie State are set to clash on October 12 in a key HBCU football matchup. Virginia State, 2-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, seeks to build momentum, while Bowie State, 1-4 overall and winless in the CIAA, aims to reverse their fortunes. Both teams need a win, but the pressure is on Bowie State to turn their season around.

Storylines

  1. Virginia State’s Defensive Strength: The Trojans’ defense has been strong, racking up 11 sacks on the season. Defensive standouts like Cameron Davis and Mustapha Coly will look to dominate Bowie State’s offense, which has struggled to generate consistent production.
  2. Bowie State’s Offensive Woes: Bowie State has averaged just 17.8 points per game while allowing 22.4. This game is crucial for Bowie State’s offense to step up, particularly against a Virginia State team that has proven difficult to break down defensively.
  3. Quarterback Duel: Virginia State’s Romelo Williams has thrown for 869 yards and 8 touchdowns, giving the Trojans a balanced offensive attack. Bowie State’s defense must find a way to limit his big-play potential.

Key Matchups

  1. Jimmyll Williams vs. Bowie State’s Defense: Virginia State’s Jimmyll Williams leads the ground game with 536 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Bowie State’s front seven must rise to the occasion to contain him.
  2. Romelo Williams vs. Bowie State Secondary: Williams has been efficient through the air, connecting with playmakers like Kevin Gayles (251 yards, 5 TDs). Bowie State’s secondary will need a standout performance to limit the Trojan’s passing attack.
  3. Virginia State’s Defensive Line vs. Bowie State O-Line: The Trojans have been aggressive up front, with 11 sacks this season. Bowie State’s offensive line must protect their quarterback to stay competitive.

Key Players to Watch

  • Virginia State: Jimmyll Williams (RB): With 536 yards on the ground and 5 TDs, Williams is the engine of the Virginia State offense.
  • Virginia State: Romelo Williams (QB): Williams has thrown for 869 yards and 8 TDs, connecting with top targets like Kevin Gayles.
  • Bowie State: Defensive Line: Their ability to pressure Romelo Williams will be critical in keeping Bowie State in the game.

This HBCU football matchup has high stakes for both teams. Virginia State looks to climb the CIAA standings, while Bowie State hopes to stop the bleeding and earn their first conference win. Expect a hard-fought battle as these rivals square off.

In a pivotal D2 HBCU football matchup within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), Virginia State University secured a crucial 35-18 victory over Fayetteville State University at Rogers Stadium in Ettrick, Virginia. Virginia State, entering the game as the preseason #1 CIAA team, aimed to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Winston-Salem State University. Meanwhile, Fayetteville State ranked #3 in the CIAA in the preseason and sought to maintain its momentum after a strong start.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

Romelo Williams, Virginia State’s quarterback, emerged as the standout player, throwing for 231 yards and four touchdowns. His top target, Kevin Gayles, excelled with three touchdown catches, amassing 149 receiving yards. Two of Gayles’ scores were explosive, coming on 63 and 68 yards catches, which helped the Trojans establish an early lead and keep the pressure on Fayetteville State.

Fayetteville State struck first with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Joe Owens Jr. to Kahlil Ashley-Diarrah. However, the Broncos struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm afterward. Owens Jr. finished the game with 104 passing yards, going 11 for 20 with one touchdown and one interception. Backup quarterback Demari Daniels managed a late touchdown pass to Emanuel Ortega-Garcia, but it came too late to alter the outcome. Virginia State’s defense was relentless, recording four sacks and holding the Broncos to just 81 rushing yards on 35 attempts.

On the ground, Virginia State also made an impact, rushing for 154 yards. Jimmyll Williams contributed a rushing touchdown with 79 yards on 19 carries, while Tylique Ray added 30 yards on nine carries. The Trojans controlled the line of scrimmage, allowing Williams to find his receivers downfield effectively. Tayshaun Porter capped off the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown catch in the fourth quarter, solidifying the win.

This critical victory elevates Virginia State’s record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play. Fayetteville State drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA, leaving them with work to do as they regroup. Both teams will look to build on their performances in upcoming matchups as the CIAA season unfolds.

What does this win mean in the D2 HBCU football landscape?

In an intense and hard-fought contest, Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) pulled off a dramatic 15-14 victory over Virginia State University (VSU) with a clutch field goal in the final seconds. WSSU overcame a 14-6 deficit late in the fourth quarter to stun the Trojans in a game that went down to the wire.

First Half

Winston-Salem State struck first, converting a field goal from 30 yards by Gilberto Lorenzana with 14:42 left in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. The Rams’ defense held strong early, but Virginia State responded with a determined ground attack. At 11:01 in the second quarter, VSU’s Tylique Ray capped off a 7-yard touchdown run, followed by a successful extra point from Joshua Campbell, putting the Trojans ahead 7-3.

Winston-Salem’s offense struggled to find the end zone for the remainder of the first half, and VSU went into halftime holding a slim 7-3 advantage.

Third Quarter Action

The second half began with both teams jockeying for momentum. Midway through the third quarter, Lorenzana delivered his second field goal of the game—a 37-yard kick that brought WSSU within one point at 7-6 with 3:11 left in the third. The Rams stayed in striking distance, setting the stage for an exciting final quarter.

Fourth Quarter Drama

Early in the fourth quarter, Virginia State extended its lead when Ray broke loose again, this time with a 14-yard touchdown run. Campbell’s extra point put the Trojans up 14-6 with 7:28 left in the game, and it seemed as though Virginia State was poised to close out the victory.

However, Winston-Salem State quickly responded in spectacular fashion. Less than 30 seconds after VSU’s touchdown, WSSU’s Timothy “TJ” Ruff powered his way through the Trojan defense for a 78-yard touchdown run. Ruff’s big play brought the Rams back to within two points, 14-12. Though WSSU missed the opportunity to tie the game with a two-point conversion, the Rams had life and a chance to win.

The Final Stand

With time winding down, the Rams marched down the field on a critical drive, setting up Lorenzana for a game-winning 20-yard field goal attempt with just three seconds left on the clock. Lorenzana, who had been perfect all night, calmly drilled the kick through the uprights, giving WSSU the 15-14 lead and silencing the Virginia State crowd.

The win marks a huge victory for Winston-Salem State, whose resilience and late-game heroics sealed their thrilling comeback. VSU’s strong rushing performance by Tylique Ray wasn’t enough, as the Rams held off the Trojans and pulled out a nail-biter on the road.

Key Players:

  • Gilberto Lorenzana (WSSU): 3/3 on field goals, including the game-winner.
  • Timothy “TJ” Ruff (WSSU): 78-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.
  • Tylique Ray (VSU): Two rushing touchdowns, including a 14-yarder in the final quarter.

This win is a testament to Winston-Salem State’s never-give-up attitude and Lorenzana’s reliable leg, proving crucial in their narrow victory over Virginia State.

In a stunning display of dominance, Virginia Union University (VUU) showcased its prowess in HBCU football by overwhelming Kentucky State University (KSU) with an astounding 69 unanswered points. After an early 7-0 deficit, VUU quickly regrouped and unleashed a relentless offensive and defensive assault that left KYSU reeling.

The HBCU matchup started with Kentucky State scoring first, but VUU’s Jada Byers set the tone for the rest of the game with a 46-yard touchdown run, tying the score and igniting Virginia Union’s offense. Byers continued to shine, contributing significantly to VUU’s 376 rushing yards, with 211 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries.

Virginia Union, HBCU
R.J. Rosales threw for two touchdowns.

VUU’s defense was equally impressive, holding KSU to a mere 62 rushing yards while forcing multiple turnovers. The Panthers’ defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns, further widening the gap and showcasing their dominance in this HBCU clash.

Quarterback RJ Rosales added to the onslaught, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns, helping VUU achieve a balanced attack that KYSU simply couldn’t counter. The game was a testament to VUU’s preparation and execution, as they controlled every aspect of the game from the second quarter onward.

This HBCU showdown serves as a stark reminder of Virginia Union’s strength and determination, leaving KYSU with much to ponder as they regroup for their next challenge. Virginia Union, on the other hand, will look to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for HBCU football supremacy this season.

Ettrick, Va.- Veteran HBCU football and track star Rayquan Smith of Virginia State University has announced his nomination as a candidate for the 2025 Forbes 30 under 30 list in the sports category for his work in the NIL space over the past four years.

Smith hit the ground running once the Name, Image, and Likeness rules were passed for college athletes in July of 2021, becoming a brand ambassador for dozens of companies while advocating for deals for other HBCU athletes, earning him the title of the “King of NIL,” now, four years later, he has the possibility of being named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list.

“When it came out, I just said – I’ve been doing it – so I might as well get paid for doing it now,” Smith told WAVY-TV in 2021.

“It don’t matter how big the brand it is, how small the brand is – if it fits me, I’m going to stick with it. I’m gonna go with it, and hopefully, it will be a long-term deal and go a long way… My big, main goal, is to help every HBCU athlete get on some type of deal or sponsorship, I feel like we’re not as big as a Power Five school, so I’m trying to make an example that we can get deals no matter what school you’re at.”

Rayquan Smith became the first HBCU athlete to sign an endorsement deal with sneaker giant Eastbay, who later featured HBCU football athletes in a campaign at the HBCU combine.

Since starting his NIL journey, Rayquan Smith has landed over 80 NIL deals from brands like Coach, Pedialyte, Crocs, and CVS and has co-founded his own NIL service “SponsorPro” a digital marketplace where brands and athletes unite for game-changing partnerships through their digital marketplace.

HBCU NIL Rayquan Smith Forbes 30 under 30

“SponsorPro sets itself apart with a platform that customizes NIL chances for athletes by fusing cutting-edge technology with a personalized touch,” Smith told Sports Illustrated. “With the use of analytics and a connection-building approach, SponsorPro distinguishes itself by providing meaningful relationships that complement the individual identities and values of each athlete. We place a high value on community development, openness, and simplicity to provide an unmatched experience in the congested NIL platform market.”

Smith started his HBCU football career at Norfolk State, breaking out in 2019 as a freshman with a 62-yard run against North Carolina A&T with his first carry in college. He finished the year ranked second on the team with 430 rushing yards but COVID-19 and injuries caused the Richmond, Va. native to hit the transfer portal, landing at one of Norfolk State’s biggest rivals, Virginia State University, where he helped the track program win its third straight CIAA Championship in 2023.
