Kenyon Garner, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound edge rusher is a highly coveted prospect out of Livingstone College. He entered the transfer portal following the Salisbury, NC-based HBCU program’s season-ending loss to Johnson C. Smith. 

Garner is visiting Texas Tech this weekend and has also lined up visits to Texas A&M, Boston College and Florida State, according to his agency. 

In 10 games, recorded 54 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss, 14.0 sacks, one safety, and three forced fumbles. He will have two seasons of eligibility at his next stop, which should only make him more valuable in the transfer portal.

Garner is a Tallahassee, FL native, but found his way to Livingstone prior to the 2024 season. He played in four games as a freshman before having his breakout season this year. 

He is one of several players from the CIAA, a D2 league made up of HBCU programs from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, that is drawing SEC and ACC-level interest. This has become a trend in the conference as last season’s champion Virginia Union had players end up at West Virginia and Wake Forest, among other places.

While that’s greater for players like Garner and the SEC and ACC schools, it leaves smaller schools — particularly Division II HBCUs in a consistent talent drain.

So how do HBCU programs remain relevant in this new era where they are out-gunned financially by the SEC, ACC and even FCS? That’s something that CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams-Parker and the conference leadership talk about often.

“I mean, we want to be competitive. I mean, we know that we’re not on an equal playing ground, period. Never have been. We were until some of the bigger schools were able to have bigger offerings to attract our students to go to their institutions. It’s just a different time, different day that’s happening.”

For the third time in just over a year, Livingstone College has received a $10 million donation from a sole anonymous benefactor—further fueling its push to be recognized as the premier private HBCU in North Carolina. The Salisbury-based HBCU has now secured more than $60 million from the same donor, a level of philanthropic support unmatched by any other private HBCU in the state.

President Dr. Anthony J. Davis calls the series of gifts part of the “Miracle on Monroe Street,” a multi-phase campus transformation that has already modernized key facilities and is poised to expand even further. “Everyone can look and see that we’ve invested every dollar, every dime into renovating this campus,” Davis said. “Now we are the premier private HBCU in North Carolina, creating an experience that is second to none for our students.”

Philanthropy Driving Growth

The latest gift will help advance the next stages of campus revitalization, including planned upgrades to Goler Hall and Honors Hall. Combined with more than $40 million in private fundraising over the past two fiscal years, these investments have positioned Livingstone to grow faster than any other private HBCU in the state. Enrollment has surged from 221 freshmen just two years ago to an expected 500 this fall, with overall growth creating new housing and facilities needs.

“We’re one of the fastest-growing HBCUs in the country,” Davis said. “It’s a good problem to have, but it means we have to think creatively about how to house our students.”

Retention Through Student Experience

Among the most visible recent upgrades is Aggrey Cafeteria, now transformed into the Luxe Life Café and operated by Thompson Hospitality. Davis frames the dining overhaul as a central piece of the college’s retention strategy, alongside residential improvements.

“It’s part of our retention model—creating a student experience that is second to none,” he said. “While we’re enhancing the student experience, we take care of where they sleep and where they eat. They want to be here at Livingstone College.”

That approach is producing results. Livingstone boasts a 92 percent return rate for upperclassmen and a 78 percent freshman retention rate. Those figures compare favorably with top-tier institutions, public or private.

Prosecutors have declined to file charges against the officers, according to the Washington Post.

“That day, I just really wanted to know why I was getting pulled over, and why I needed to step out of the car,” McNeil told reporters about the incident, which gained traction online in recent days after he shared video from inside his vehicle. “I know I didn’t do nothing wrong. I was really just scared, and that’s it,” he added.

McNeil’s cellphone footage, which shows only a partial view of the interaction, went viral and led to public pressure on local officials. In response, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters released the department’s bodycam video, claiming McNeil’s clip didn’t provide the full picture.

Livingstone College President Dr. Anthony J. Davis issued a powerful statement in support of McNeil, calling for justice and highlighting the student’s contributions to the HBCU and local community.

“Will’s rights were violated but he showed restraint, he showed resolve, and he showed resilience. That is the Blue Bear Way,” Davis said in the letter. “We will stop at nothing to ensure that SAU maintains its accreditation and continues serving our students,” he added, while referencing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

The Jacksonville, Fl resident is a member of the Blue Thunder Marching Band and is known around the HBCU campus for his service and generosity. He regularly volunteers to help fellow students, including making minor car repairs and working with the school’s maintenance team to improve air quality in residence halls.

The case has united leaders, alumni, and students who see McNeil not only as a victim, but also as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for civil rights and fair treatment. The release of the video has made him a rallying point in the broader fight against police brutality across the nation’s HBCUs.

Since earning his degree, Davis has become a respected music educator across the region. Most recently, he served as the band director at Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte. Record-Breaking Season for Blue Bear Golf

The 2024–2025 season was the most successful in program history. The Blue Bears placed eighth out of 25 teams and 108 athletes. They captured the CIAA Southern Championship and set a school record with 82 total wins.

Livingstone made its fourth NCAA tournament appearance—more than any team in school history. They finished fifth in the NCAA Division II Championships, reaching as high as third during the event.

Building Success at an HBCU

Coach Springs focuses on more than winning. He has built a program that values character, academics, and long-term growth.

“It’s a mindset of winning… It’s a gift,” said Springs. “You have to really love what you do, because if you don’t, kids will see right through it.”

From Restart to HBCU Golf Powerhouse

Springs returned to Livingstone College, an HBCU in North Carolina, in 2010. The golf program had been dormant. Fifteen years later, it is now one of the school’s top athletic programs. The team has earned eight championships and national respect under his leadership.

Student-Athletes Excel On and Off the Course

This season, four student-athletes earned All-CIAA All-Conference honors: Ibrahim Aliga, Chris Baguma, Luke Cochran, and Denis Asada. Their achievements show the team’s commitment to excellence on the course and in academics.

“Coach Springs has made a huge impact on my life,” said Asada. “He has helped me grow so much, not only as a player, but as a person. I’m so grateful for his leadership and support.”

With this national recognition, Coach Andre Springs continues to elevate HBCU golf. His leadership is shaping champions at Livingstone College—both on and off the green. The GCAA has been selecting a Coach of the Year Award since 1998, according to its website.

The gift of more than $1.5 million, made by an anonymous donor, will be used to install solar panels on the campus. The gift comes just three months after the college received $10 million for residence hall and dining hall enhancements, and brings the total amount money raised by Davis to approximately $43 million since he was named president in 2022.

“Bringing green energy to the campus of Livingstone College is our contribution to mitigating the impact of climate change on our planet,” Davis said.

Livingstone joins HBCU movement

Livingstone joins regional HBCU siblings – like North Carolina A&T State University, Benedict College and Claflin University – in the fight against climate change both inside and outside of the classroom.

In addition to installing solar panels on the campus, Livingstone undergraduates are conducting environmental research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS or “forever chemicals”, and their contamination in the soil, tap and bottled water in Rowan County.  

Livingstone’s environmental efforts have not only inspired the anonymous donor to contribute millions toward the college’s green energy, they also have caught the attention of the Sierra Club’s executive director, Ben Jealous, who visited the college in April to speak during the annual honors awards ceremony and spend time with students.

Davis said the donor’s investment indicates a continued confidence in the research and work that HBCUs like Livingstone are engaged in, despite federal funding sources for environmental research and responsibility being at risk of reduction or elimination.

“Investments like this are why Livingstone will move into the ranks of the top 20 HBCUs in the nation,” Davis said. “Transformational gifts are just one way that our supporters demonstrate their belief in our future. Our college is poised to impact our region, our country and our nation in an unbelievable way.”

Dr. Davis told the crowd that he has been silently battling stage five kidney failure for the past year and a half. Despite the demands of leading Livingstone College, he has undergone 9.5 hours of dialysis treatment every night, seven days a week. He described how he travels with his dialysis machine, continuing to recruit students and serve the HBCU community while undergoing life-sustaining treatment.

His health challenges began shortly after taking on the presidency of the Salisbury, North Carolina-based HBCU. “When the Lord is blessing, the enemy starts messing,” he said, reflecting on the timing of his diagnosis. After learning he would need a kidney transplant, Dr. Davis’s family was tested, but none were a match due to blood type differences—he is O-positive, while his children are B-positive.

“I said, my children, what kind of luck do I have? They get their mother’s good looks and her blood type,” he said, drawing laughter and support from the audience.

To find a match, Dr. Davis has launched a campaign called “Be My Match,” encouraging members of the public—especially students, alumni, faculty, and supporters of HBCUs nationwide—to consider becoming a living donor. A QR code for more information was shared at the ceremony, and Dr. Davis directed interested individuals to speak with his team during the post-commencement reception.

The campaign reflects the communal spirit often found within HBCU circles, where personal and institutional struggles are shared and supported together. Dr. Davis believes that with faith, persistence, and the strength of the HBCU network, a match will be found.

Salisbury, NC | Livingstone College opened its first Home Depot Innovations Lounge on March 26 in the W. J. Walls Student Center. Livingstone President Dr. Anthony J. Davis welcomed HBCU students into the new space, which was the College’s former student center. The space is outfitted with new furniture and technology and has dedicated spaces for student collaboration.

“I am moved, truly moved to see the students here today…this is what it’s all about,” Davis said. “On the campus of Livingstone College, one of the things that we are definitely being intentional about is making sure that our students are our first priority.”

One of Few

According to Dr. Orlando Lewis, Livingstone’s Vice President for Student Affairs, “this is the first year that Home Depot offered its student innovation lounge program grant. We were one of a few colleges to receive it.” The $59,000 grant included $34,000
 for renovations – including new flooring, doors, and freshly painted walls – and a $25,000 furniture package.

This is not the first time the HBCU has received funding from Home Depot’s “Retool Your School” program grant. In 2018, the college received $30,000 to renovate its campus pavilion and another $30,000 in 2021 to develop and implement a high-profile Podcast
 Café, the first of its kind in the State of North Carolina.

Lewis added that this year’s grant guarantees student internships and scholarships, providing them with opportunities for growth and learning. “This will become a lounge for students to innovate, ideate, and collaborate,” Lewis said.

The space also features a commissioned mural painted by artist Phillip Osborne to represent all sides of the student experience at Livingstone.

“I just wanted to embody the many different elements within the innovation center as well as the college itself,” said Osborne, who incorporated some of the most important experiences of HBCU student life: academics, football, civic engagement, Greek life,
 and extracurricular activities.

The event began as a competitive race but quickly turned into a showcase of dominance by the United States. The American quartet of Quanera Hayes, Bailey Lear, Rosey Effiong, and Alexis Holmes stormed to victory, securing the final gold medal of the championships with a commanding time of 3:27.45 — nearly five seconds ahead of their closest competitors.

Poland, which briefly led after the opening leg, claimed the silver medal in 3:32.05, while Australia, competing in this event at the World Indoors for the first time since 1999, took bronze.

USA Takes Control After Early Challenge

Poland’s Justyna Swiety Ersetic, the most experienced member of her squad, gave her team an early lead with an impressive 52.18 split on the opening leg, narrowly edging out Hayes. However, Lear quickly erased that deficit, handing over to Effiong with the USA in control.

Effiong widened the gap before passing the baton to 400m silver medallist Alexis Holmes, a proven anchor leg specialist in major championships. Holmes delivered a strong 51.47 split to seal the victory for Team USA.

Podium Finishers and Host Nation’s Effort

Behind the dominant Americans, Poland held on for second place, while Australia’s impressive return to the event resulted in a well-deserved bronze. The home crowd cheered loudly as China fought valiantly to secure a fourth-place finish.

Holmes Reflects on Team Chemistry and Success

“We’ve been running with each other since college, so we definitely know each other well,” Holmes said after the race. “We don’t get to see each other much during the year, but every time we come together, the goal is to win. That’s the highlight of the week for sure — another medal for Team USA.”

With this emphatic performance, the United States capped off the championships on a high note, reinforcing their dominance on the global stage.

Quanera Hayes is an accomplished American sprinter specializing in the 400 meters. As an HBCU runner in the CIAA at Livingstone College she was a 12-time NCAA All-American and a four-time National Champion in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She rose to international prominence by winning gold in the 4x400m relay at the 2017 World Championships and securing bronze in the individual 400m at the 2016 World Indoor Championships.

Hayes claimed the 400m title at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials, earning a spot at the Tokyo Olympics, where she helped Team USA secure gold in the 4x400m relay. Known for her consistency and strong finishes, Hayes has been a key contributor to the U.S. relay success on the world stage and remains a top competitor in her discipline, showcasing the talents that were developed at her HBCU.

The money will be used for capital renovation projects on the campus, including renovating its cafeteria and multiple residence halls. The school said, unofficially, that it has received $23 million from the donor over the course of the fiscal year, including a $10 million gift in July. 

“We don’t receive philanthropy at this level because of a president who gets up and makes an eloquent speech,” Davis told his faculty and staff. “This happens because all of you have been committed to this miracle approach. It’s because of the work that you’re doing, and it’s making us the fastest growing HBCU in North Carolina.”

Dr. Davis touted the university’s 13 percent growth number which would eclipse North Carolina Central’s highest growth number amongst the state’s five public HBCUs. Livingstone is one of five private HBCUs in the state, and is the only private one in the midst of a comprehensive campus revitalization project. 

“Which means that the world is watching,” Dr. Davis said. “ World wants to know. — ‘wait a minute, Livingstone? They’re getting philanthropic contributions like Morehouse and Spelman. We are. It’s because of the work that you’re doing.”

The AME Zion-backed HBCU is looking at slow growth, Davis told the media afterwards. 

“When we talk about slow control growth, it’s about capacity,” Dr. Davis said. “We could not function above 1200 students right now, physically on campus. So right now we’re at 941. We’re almost close to capacity.”

Johnson C. Smith has put together a flawless season so far, boasting an 8-0 record overall and 5-0 in the CIAA. They’ve claimed wins over the conference’s top teams, including Virginia Union, Virginia State, and Winston-Salem State. However, their victory over Virginia Union was not counted as a conference game, which leaves Virginia Union technically undefeated in the CIAA as well.

Virginia Union, currently 5-0 in conference play and 6-2 overall, is hot on Johnson C. Smith’s heels. They’ve also displayed strength, particularly with a key win over Winston-Salem State. “In 146 years of this institution, we have had unprecedented momentum. In the past 60 days, we’ve received more than $20M in philanthropic support, with our anonymous donor gifting the college another $1M donation. Every dime has been invested in the $50M ‘Miracle on Monroe Street Project,’ a comprehensive campaign that will refurbish 5 residence halls, including 90 beds, at our Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management facility,” Dr. Anthony J. Davis, president and CEO announced via YouTube on Monday.

Additionally, the college has onboarded 441 freshmen and new students this year—the second-largest and most competitive enrollment in our college’s history. With this new incoming class boasting an average GPA of 3.26, Livingstone is strategically positioning itself as one of the top destinations for the country’s best and brightest students who wish to attend an HBCU.

The college is currently observing Stonecoming, which will run from October 6th to 12th. This year’s line-up will feature a Praise Party and Gospel Jubilee with recording artist Tye Tribbett, a Fashion Show, and a Step Show, culminating with Saturday’s game and Stonecoming 2024 The Experience concert. The game started with Lincoln University scoring first. Quarterback Isaiah Freeman threw a big 69-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Eli Riddick, putting Lincoln ahead 7-3 early on. It looked like it would be an offensive battle, but Livingstone’s defense quickly adjusted, making important stops and forcing turnovers that kept Lincoln from scoring again.

While Lincoln struggled to move the ball, Livingstone’s kicker, Jason Zapata, became the team’s star player. He kicked three important field goals from 34, 27, and 29 yards, helping Livingstone stay in the game. His final kick in the third quarter gave Livingstone a 15-14 lead. Zorian Wallace also threw a touchdown pass to Chris Brown, marking Livingstone’s only offensive touchdown, which turned out to be the game-winner.

On the defensive side, Lincoln’s Jahad Green made seven tackles and applied constant pressure on Livingstone’s offense. However, Livingstone’s defense made a key stop late in the game, preventing Lincoln from converting on a crucial fourth down. This stop sealed the win for Livingstone and ended Lincoln’s chance for a comeback.

Salisbury, NC | Livingstone College an HBCU in Salisbury, NC, has recently received an additional $1.2 million in grants and donations from various sources, fortifying its commitment to enhancing student services and campus facilities.

The College received a significant anonymous $8 million donation last month and has since secured various grants and donations to bolster its infrastructure and capital investments. President Dr. Anthony J. Davis expressed gratitude, stating, “If Livingstone College can be better, then better we will be.”

Notably, the National Science Foundation awarded the College a $448,000 grant to support the STEM Innovation Ecosystem, benefiting students pursuing STEM-related programs. Additionally, Livingstone received a $300,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation, Inc. for campus infrastructure improvements and a $200,000 grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation for the HOPE Emancipation Project, supporting students who have aged out of foster care.

The HBCU also received a $120,000 donation from Greg Alcorn, founder of Global Contact Services (GCS) and ApSeed, and a $109,000 grant from the Darelle Revis Foundation for the football program, led by former NFL player Sean Gilbert.

Furthermore, Livingstone’s recruitment cycle has surged by 90% in just 1 ½ years, largely attributed to the instrumental efforts of Vice President of Enrollment Management, Mr. Anthony Brooks.

Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College has 8 million more reasons to be grateful as students begin classes this week. Dr. Davis, the 13th President of Livingstone College, announced that the HBCU had received an additional $8 million donation from its anonymous donor.

Last month, the HBCU received an unprecedented $10 million donation, the largest in the institution’s history. At present, the anonymous donor has gifted the college $25 million over the past nine months. This funding will be used for the continuation of the ‘Miracle on Monroe Street: Livingstone College Reimagined’ infrastructure and capital projects.

As students returned to campus, they were welcomed to a newly updated dining facility. The facility, which features new flooring, has also increased in capacity, providing students with a better dining experience. Renovations are still underway for Tucker and Dancy residence halls, expected to be completed by fall 2025.  Phase 2 of the dining hall renovations will begin in the spring as well as renovations to Tucker and Babcock Halls.

Dr. Davis addressed a pressing issue facing private HBCUs in North Carolina: access to state gambling funds for athletics. Public institutions in the state (including Elizabeth City, Fayetteville State and Winston-Salem State) benefit from substantial allocations from sports betting revenues, a privilege not extended to private HBCUs like Livingstone College as well as Johnson C. Smith, Shaw University and Saint Augustine’s University. Davis is pushing back on that. 

“They’ll give every state school in the CIAA a million dollars from the lottery money, but they say the privates can’t participate,” he noted, calling for equitable treatment from state legislators. 

Dr. Davis pointed out that a significant portion of Livingstone’s student body hails from North Carolina, making them constituents deserving of similar support. HBCU Gameday’s reporting on the matter underscores the disparity in funding and the need for policy changes to ensure all HBCUs can thrive.

Athletics also play a pivotal role at Livingstone College, with nearly half of the student population participating in sports. Dr. Davis expressed his commitment to enhancing the athletic program, focusing not just on wins and losses but on maintaining a competitive spirit.

“My challenge to him [Coach Sean Gilbert] is to put a competitive product on the field,” he said, underscoring the broader impact of athletics on school spirit and community engagement.

Another significant change under Dr. Davis’s leadership has been the implementation of a fee for alumni to enter the campus during homecoming last fall. Initially met with resistance, this initiative has proven successful in enhancing the overall homecoming experience. 

“After alumni had the opportunity to see it and experience it, they said, ‘Wow, we needed to pay more,'” Dr. Davis shared. 

The fee helps manage the influx of visitors and ensures that the campus remains clean and safe, contributing to a more organized and enjoyable homecoming for everyone, Dr. Davis explained. This approach also generated additional revenue, further supporting the college’s operational needs.

This aligns with the college’s goal to improve living conditions for students and attract top scholars to its campus. Dr. Davis highlighted the success of Livingstone College in changing its ecosystem and elevating its academic profile, boasting an incoming class of 114 presidential scholars with GPAs between 3.7 and 4.0, and another 85 students with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.6.

Previously, Livingstone College received multiple $1 million donations from the same anonymous donor, which have been instrumental in supporting various campus projects and initiatives. The first donation was received during the college’s homecoming celebrations, and subsequent contributions followed during key events, reflecting the donor’s ongoing commitment to the institution’s growth and success.

Dr. Davis called on alumni and friends of the HBCU to contribute in any capacity they can, emphasizing that every donation helps expedite the college’s progress and overcome years of deferred maintenance. Livingstone also announced in a press release that, “this latest donation will be one of the largest outright gifts to a private HBCU in North Carolina.”

“This donation will assist us in advancing our mission, which is too critical to abandon and too important to take for granted,” Livingstone College President Dr. Anthony Davis said. “The money will allow us to accelerate campus renovations, improve the student experience, and solidify our place in Rowan County for generations to come.”

Crews are completing Phase One of the project, which will include two residence halls and a dining hall scheduled to open in the fall of 2024. The most recent donation will allow Livingstone College to start renovations on two additional residence halls, which are more than 50 years old.

Dr. Davis, an alum of Livingstone College, is the first graduate to serve as president in the last 50 years. Davis says the stewardship of this money is in alignment with a promise made to students and their families to execute campus improvements.

This news closely follows the college’s fifth $1 million contribution, received at the beginning of the month. Dr. Anthony J. Davis, president of Salisbury, North Carolina HBCU Livingstone College, announced Tuesday afternoon that the college was blessed to receive its fifth $1 million contribution. The donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has given the College four additional $1 million contributions, the first being received during the College’s homecoming celebration last October. Dr. Davis exclaimed at that time that the initial $1 million contribution was the largest individual gift from a non-alumnus in the College’s history. 

This additional gift will address the College’s challenges related to capital improvements and the campus’s infrastructure. It will also enable us to continue our mission to educate, equip, and empower our students to compete and contribute in a global context with confidence and competence. Dr. Davis appreciates the community’s support and hopes that this exemplary act of philanthropy will ignite the spirit of giving among other members of the community.

This donation follows in the footsteps of the North Carolina College’s award of an Innovation Lounge Grant during the 2024 Retool Your School Contest, sponsored by Home Depot. Retool Your School is a multitiered project designed to provide grants to HBCU campuses to be used for campus improvement projects that promote sustainability and long-term benefits to the campus and students. That particular grant will allow Livingstone to enhance existing spaces on the campus where students can gather to collaborate. 

The school has previously confirmed that the first three $1 million donations were made by the same individual. The latest release didn’t explicitly state that the fourth donation was made by the same individual.

Salisbury, NC – Livingstone College has received a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor for the third time in less than 180 days, according to an announcement made by President Dr. Anthony J. Davis on Monday, March 11. The previous two $1 million donations were also made by the same anonymous donor, with the first being received during the college’s homecoming celebrations last fall and the second announced during the college’s 145 Founder’s Day program in February. These donations are a testament to the enduring legacy of Livingstone College and the profound impact it has on the community.

This third unrestricted donation will continue to support the work being executed on campus. The hope is that it will inspire other members of the community to support Livingstone College’s mission and vision and give to the college in the future, knowing that their contributions are instrumental in the college’s success.

BALTIMORE, MD — No. 4 Bowie State held No. 5 Livingstone (12-16) to just 13.3 percent from deep in a 2-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 69-66 win over the Blue Bears of Livingstone at CFG Bank Arena Tuesday, Feb. 27 during the opening round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s Basketball Tournament. 

The Bulldogs (12-16) had three players score in double figures, led by CIAA Food Lion MVP of the game Warren Mouganda, who had 17 points. Kevon Corley tacked on 15 points and Joel Webb notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Webb pulled down eight offensive rebounds which led the BSU offense which grabbed 14 boards and turned them into 17 second-chance points.

The Bulldogs’ defense held Livingstone to only 13.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 36.1 percent from the field.

How It Happened
After jumping out to a 29-24 advantage, BSU went on a 7-0 run with 1:29 left in the first half to increase its lead to 36-24, a score that would hold until halftime. The Bulldogs relied on its three-point shooting in the half, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 36 points.

BSU kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Mouganda’s jumper, to grow the lead to 57-50 with 5:43 to go in the contest. The Blue Bears narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Bulldogs still held on for the 69-66 win. BSU got a boost from its bench in the second half, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 33 total points.

The programs are both led by coaches who have multiple CIAA championships. James Stinson has been at the helm for 20 years at Livingstone College, leading it to its only two titles in school history in 2014 and 2015. Cleo Hill Jr. has led Winston-Salem State to CIAA titles in 2020 and 2023 in addition to the title he won at Shaw in 2011. 

The last 10 matchups between these teams from February 24, 2018, to February 18, 2023, favored WSSU, with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. WSSU is 7-2 against Livingstone since Hill took over the program prior to the 2018-2019 season. Only one of those games were decided by more than 10 points, with seven of those games coming down to six points or less.

Beyond the competitiveness of the basketball, both teams are guaranteed to have to turn fans away from their small gyms. The last game between the two teams was moved to Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Colisieum at Wake Forest where 4,500 fans showed up to watch the two teams battle.

“Reality sinks in that we don’t operate in isolation, we’re plagued by the same violence that hits our city streets every day. We’re plagued by gun violence, which is a national pandemic. And we talk about emerging from COVID. We’ve yet to deal with the national pandemic of senseless gun violence that really impacts our community,” Dr. Davis told HBCU Gameday. “But my students don’t deserve to be held hostage. They deserve to have a great homecoming experience, safe and without incident.”

As the school prepares for its second homecoming under Dr. Davis, it is making a change to how people access the campus on Saturday, October 21. 

“So this year, we decided to take advantage of our gated community and say –  number one – in order to get on our campus. One of the first things that you have to do is you have to a) go through metal detectors. There will only be two entry points. Everyone will have to go through metal detectors and there will be a clear bag policy because we’re going to make sure everyone is safe.”

Everyone who gets on the campus on Saturday will have the ability to watch Livingstone College take on Shaw University in its homecoming game – or not.

“And then we ask everyone to invest the economic model by paying $30,” Davis continued. “They get all pre-game activities. They get to go to the game. They also have the opportunity to have the post-game activities. We’re going to do a celebration for hip hop. We will bring in legendary rap artists, Kool Moe Dee and friends, and then we will end the night with Da Baby – all on the campus of Livingstone College for $30.”

While everyone won’t go into the game or might want to see Da Baby but not Kool Mo Dee, Davis believes this new policy will help provide a better experience for all involved – including the school’s students. Davis says in years past the budget may not have allowed for the type of entertainment his students wanted on their campus. 

“I said, my students deserve the best if they’re spending $26,000 to come to Livingstone and paying through activity fees. As a leader who cares about his students, I want them to have a great homecoming experience,” he said.  “I don’t want to give them cause to go another HBCU because we’re bringing this type of limiting entertainment to their campus. And we’re going to execute it as safe as possible, and we’re going to make sure that everyone invests in the economic model to move us from surviving to thriving.”

“If the ball would have been on the 40. I was confident, because we practice a lot,” Zaputa told HBCU Gameday after the game. “We practiced way further than that. Just in case. Moments like this.”

It was the first win for LC at Bowman Gray Stadium since 1998 it edged out WSSU for the CIAA title and was the second consecutive over WSSU for the program.

The Blue Bears jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Rams scored 21 unanswered points to take a one-point lead with 9:19 remaining. Zaputa, who had already hit a 50-yard field goal early in the second quarter, hit a 39-yard field goal with 4:29 remaining before knocking down the game-winner.

Livingstone out-gained WSSU 358 yards to 287, controlling the ball for 35 minutes. Receiver Devonte Deloatch caught the ball 11 times for 110 yards to lead LC, which got a pair of rushing touchdowns from Jymikaah Wells who finished with 59 yards on 17 carries.

The win was the second in a row for Livingstone, which started the season 0-4 and came into the game allowing 35 points per game. 

“We took another step growing and I’m proud of our team,” Gilbert said. “Winston is a tough team. You know, we just got to continue to play the way we play and we’ll see what happens.”

Livingstone College will head to face Fayetteville State on Saturday while Winston-Salem State will travel to Durham to face Shaw University.

A crowd of 2,753 fans in Alumni Memorial Stadium witnessed LC beat BSU for the first time since 2014.

The Blue Bears forced five turnovers and led from start to finish. Marcus Drish led the Blue Bears passing attack, completing 18 of his 32 attempts for 224 yards and four touchdowns. Drish’s most prolific target in the ballgame was Davontay Deloatch, who caught three scoring passes. Ben Coates Jr. got in on the action catching one scoring pass. Drish’s most consistent receiver was Matthew Henery catching eight passes for 130 yards. 

Jaden Echols was a dominant force in the game. He led the defense with 12 total tackles (six solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Ty Conley recorded eight total tackles, (five solo), one tackle for loss, and a sack. Kobe Pringle recorded six total tackles (two solo), two total tackles for loss, and two sacks. 

LC scored first on a two-yard flip pass to take a 7-0 over Bowie State with 1:46 left in the first quarter. Livingstone opened a 7-0 lead, Bowie State got on the scoreboard with 14:24 left in the second quarter to narrow the margin to 7-6. Livingstone scored to increase its lead to 17-6 after a 5-yard touchdown reception and a 47-yard field goal, Bowie State scored again to narrow the deficit and make it a 17-12 game in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Bears would score two more times in the fourth stanza to extend its lead 31-12 before the Bulldogs responded with a touchdown with 3:00 left in regulation lead. The Blue Bears would emerge victorious ending the game with a 31-18 lead. 

“The entire coaching staff is extremely proud of the resilience and tenacity of this team,” LC head coach Sean Gilbert said after the game. “Each week working hard and making the necessary adjustments to be successful.”

Livingstone College improved to 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. LC will begin its division play when it faces Winston-Salem State University (2-3 overall and 2-1 CIAA) on Saturday, October 7th in Bowman Gray Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Salisbury, NC — Bluefield State University Football took down fellow CIAA opponent Livingstone College in their season opener 41-7 on Saturday.  

The game kicked off with Bluefield State winning the toss and deferring their choice to the second half. Livingstone received the ball, hoping to make an early impact. However, Bluefield State’s defense had other plans.

Livingstone’s opening drive began at their 25-yard line. Their efforts were stifled by a relentless Bluefield State defense. The Livingstone offense struggled to move the ball, being met by Corey Watkins and TJ Gunter. Livingstone ultimately had to punt, but disaster struck as they fumbled the snap, allowing Bluefield State to recover the ball at Livingstone’s 37-yard line. 

Bluefield State’s offense wasted no time. Led by freshman quarterback Jai’que Hart, they quickly capitalized on the turnover. Hart connected with a series of completions, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to Darius Thompson, taking an early 6-0 lead.  

The following drive saw Livingstone trying to respond, but their offense continued to struggle against the Big Blue defense. Another fumble resulted in a turnover, recovered by Justin Campbell. The Big Blue marched down the field from the 37-yard line and later Hart connected with Cam Taylor for the 24-yard touchdown pass. The extra point by Braxton VanScoy was good, extending Bluefield State’s lead 13-0. 

The Big Blue opened the second quarter with Hart finding Khyon Smith in the endzone. After a successful attempt from VanScoy, the Big Blue extended their lead 20-0.  

Livingstone needed to response, but their offense continued to be plagued by turnovers and a relentless Bluefield State defense. The first half ended with Bluefield State in control, leading 34-0. 

The Big Blue defense continued to stifle the Livingstone offense coming out of the half while the Big Blue offense added another touchdown to the board, making it 41-0.  

Livingstone showed some signs of life in the fourth quarter, putting seven on the board.  

Bluefield State’s dominant performance ultimately led to a resounding 41-7 victory.  

In freshman QB Hart’s first collegiate start, he led the Big Blue with five touchdowns and 218 passing yards.  

“Great team effort in this win! All three phases made plays that impacted the outcome,” said head coach Tony Coaxum. “We wanted to make a statement entering the CIAA! Our staff put together a great game plan and players executed it with great passion and energy!”

Huff spent 12 years as the Director of Athletics at Livingstone College, making a major impact with facilities, academics, graduation rates, community involvement, and development. During his tenure, he earned several honors, including being named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Athletic Director of the Year and earning the Jeannette Lee Athletic Achievement Award in 1997 and 1998. In 1998, he received the Commissioner’s Special Recognition Award for leadership.

Huff served as the First Vice-President of the CIAA’s Conference Officers from 2005-07, and the President of the CIAA Athletic Director’s Association from 1999-2003. Huff served on the CIAA Basketball Tournament Committee from 1999-2007, and as a member of the the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Regional Select Committee from 1999-2004. Now, set for his return, he has sights on taking the Blue Bears to new heights.

“There’s truly no place like home. My athletic career has come full circle from where it started.  I am excited about this second opportunity lead and the challenge to build Livingstone College into a national competitive athletic program,” said Huff said.

During Huff’s tenure as an Administrator at several different colleges and universities where he’s been affiliated with three National Champions, 22 conference titles and hundreds of All-American athletes.

A video featuring players wearing Livingstone College jerseys and helmets and crashing into each other is making its rounds on social media.

Livingstone College is a Division II HBCU located in Salisbury, NC. LC went 4-6 during the 2022 season.

In the video, two players stood across from each other in a hallway yelling back-and-forth. They then ran towards each other, with one eventually running over the other.

The video originated on TikTok, but made its way to Twitter via Overtime – a platform that shares viral or potentially-viral sports-related content. Since being posted at approximately 10:30 PM, more than 1.1 million views have been accumulated.

As the video made its rounds, Dr. Mark A. Williams, Livingstone College associate head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach tweeted about the incident indirectly. 

“For everyone messaging me about the viral video of two of our players in the dorm going head up. Not one coach approved it but in the words of Boosie…”

Williams proceeded to tweet a screenshot to the lyrics “Set It Off” by hip-hop artist Boogie Bad Azz. The lyrics read.

“You wanna talk s**t, you wanna run yo mouth…”

Livingstone College came back to take the lead and hold an eight-point advantage in the second half before fouls and turnovers did it in. Virginia State won the game 66-63. But it had to fight a determined, gutsy bunch, tooth-and-nail to do so. 

“The Livingstone women basketball team is a picture of adversity,” interim head coach Maurice Sumpter said after the game. “The young ladies can do more than you could imagine. And they came on other side of it.  Not unscathed. They come out on the other side. And you saw that today during the game.”

Sumter is the third person to coach Livingstone since the season started back in November.

Chiante Wester started the season as the Blue Bears head coach, but she was suspended in the first semester following claims of “toxic bullying” within the program. No decision has been made on her future, but Lamont Massie-Sampson was fired as Director of Althetics around the same time. 

For a while, eSports coach Will Stanley took the reins of the team. Ultimately Sumter, a member of Webster’s staff, took over the program on Jan. 8.  He led the team to a 7-10 record under his leadership, finishing fourth in the CIAA Southern Division.

Livingstone toughness was a gift and a curse

Livingstone College plays a hard-nosed brand of basketball, which is a strength but can also come back to hurt them. Wednesday evening it sent Virginia State to the line for 39 attempts while shooting just 13 of their own. It’s something that Sumter has noticed and tried to figure out. 

“It was a big disparity. I’m not saying that would determine the outcome of the game, but it was noticeable. “We’re a physical team. And to be honest with you, we’ve been dealing with that all year, trying to measure the physicality throughout the game, throughout the night. And that’s been a common theme throughout the year where there’s been a disparity in the free throws.”

Andresa Alexander admitted things haven’t been all roses, but she and her teammates appreciate Sumter for holding the fort down. 

“I feel like it’s definitely been a challenge, especially going through three coaches that one year. But I mean, Coach Mo has definitely made it a little bit easier for us. Of course, we have growing pains like every other team will have with their coach, but it’s just like we definitely know that he has made us better in some way, shape or form as a team individually. He’s been there for us mentally and physically and we appreciate that from the bottom of our heart.”

With the season over, flanked by Alexander and Thalia Carter, Sumter’s face was a mixture of disappointment and pride as he reflected on the last six weeks since taking over the gig.

“You know, they taught me just as much as I’ve taught them. And I’m just so proud of them beyond measure. It’s just amazing to be sitting in this seat with these two amazing young ladies beside me. But every last one of those young ladies in the locker room. And I just want to send a salute to them –  and a special thank you to these young ladies and also coach Chiante Wester, who’s not with us. But all of us are a family together. I just enjoyed the experience with these young ladies, and I’m glad that they got a chance to experience every minute of it.”

“We already knew they were going to be against us –  and was going to be talking to us and all –  but we just stayed levelheaded,” said Teel, who finished with a game-high 21 points. “We came here to win a basketball game. We didn’t come here to talk to nobody. We came here to win. That’s exactly what we did tonight.”

Teel came up big for the Rams several times, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Rams a three-point cushion with just under 20 seconds left in regulation, and then hitting two free throws to put the game out of reach after the Blue Bears forced overtime. The game was a back-and-forth battle for the most part, with 18 lead changes and 13 ties. 

“The atmosphere, It was great,” WSSU head coach Cleo Hill said after the game. “It wasn’t Gaines – it the Gaines Center energy –  but it was good. I thought for the most part we stayed together. The game was up and down, highs and lows with the guys, for the most part – they bent but they didn’t break.”

WSSU had five players score in double-figures, including a 16-point, six assist performance from Issac Parson. It was a bit of redemption for the second-year player who missed a potential game-winner in the same building a year prior. 

“I just want to come back in here, execute, make sure my team stayed together and we pulled out with a W,” Parson said after the game.

WSSU shot a sizzling 53.2 percent from the field for the game and hit 9 of 19 attempts from the 3-point line, helping to offset their 54 percent free throw shooting.

Khyree Temple and Paul Tako paced Livingstone with 15 points each. Livingstone has now lost three of its last four and falls to 9-10 overall, 5-5 in CIAA play.

Temple, Broadnax lead Livingstone rally

The visiting Blue Bears (8-8, 4-3 CIAA, 1-1 S) behind 25 second-half points from Khyree Temple and 21 from Arion Broadnax came all the way back to tie the game at 77. Broadnax’s fourth-3 pointer of the period tied the game with 1:02 left. 

But FSU center Kaleb Coleman canned a wide open three with :40 seconds left that turned out to be the game winner. Livingstone was able to get off four 3-point attempts in the waning seconds but could not connect.

Coleman led FSU (11-9, 6-2, 2-0 S) with 22 points, 18 in the second half. Point guard Jacob Crutchfield also finished with 22, 18 in the first half. Cress Worthy and Tyler Foster each had 10 points each.

Temple, a 6-6 former 3A player of the year at Phoebus High School in Hampton (Va.), had a game high 35 points. Temple made 14 of 18 shots from the field. He and Broadnax were were the only Blue Bears to score in double digits. Broadax, who had all of his 21 after the break, hit 4 of 7 3s. Temple also led LC off the boards with 12 rebounds.

Fayetteville State early, Livingstone late

The tone was set for the game when FSU, who scored only 44 points in a win Saturday at home over Johnson C. Smith, surpassed that total in the first half. Behind four 3-pointers from Crutchfield, the Broncs built a 47-27 lead at the break.

Livingstone pressed the entire second half and quickly whittled the lead down. They opened the second half on a 17-5 run to cut the lead to 52-44 in the first seven minutes. FSU responded with an 18-12 run capped by Danny Myers’ turnaround jumper with 7:13 left to push the lead back into double-digits at 70-56.

Livingstone’s pressing defense forced several of FSU’s 24 turnovers late. Temple and Broadnax went to work on offense in the Blue Bears’ 21-7 spurt to force the tie and set up the game-winning heroics.

After the frantic finish, the teams tussled after the final buzzer. But referees and team officials were able to separate the teams and restore order.

Both teams continue CIAA South Division play this weekend.

Fayetteville State, the defending CIAA Tournament champion, hits the road to face Winston-Salem State Saturday (4 p.m.). Livingstone plays at JC Smith Saturday.

Against Claflin in Salisbury on Saturday afternoon, Livingstone faced its third overtime game in its last four contests. It came out on the positive side, defeating the visitors 96-95 in a game that went down to the wire in New Trent Gymnasium.

Khyree Temple came up clutch on both ends of the game in the final minutes, hitting a bucket to give his team a one-point lead with less than two seconds remaining. Temple finished the game with a block of a Jailen Williams layup attempt that would have changed the outcome of the game as the buzzer sounded. 

It was an epic finish to the game for a Livingstone squad mourning the untimely passing of guard Eric Henderson, whose life ended in a car accident during Christmas break.

LC is 2-1 in overtime games this season, with both wins coming at home.

Williams finished with a game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals as Claflin came up on the short end of the stick. Allen Hatchett and Timothy McElroy both had big offensive nights for Claflin, scoring 22 and 21 points respectively. McElroy added 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Five Claflin players scored in double-figures, but it wasn’t quite enough.

After starting the season 9-0, Claflin is 3-3 in its last six games. 

Livingstone College got 17 points from Pharaoh Lassiter to go with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Detionne Leach. LC, which averages 86.1 points per game, shot 48.6 percent from the field and just under 42 percent from the field as it improved to 8-7 on the season and 4-2 in CIAA play. Saturday’s win put LC at 2-0 against the two CIAA squads – Virginia Union and Claflin University – that were nationally ranked in December. 

LC will face off against Fayetteville State in Salisbury on Wednesday. Claflin will travel to Winston-Salem State on Wednesday.

Claflin, the no. 24 team in the NABC top 25 poll, beat no. 19 Virginia Union 63-58 to improve to 10-1 overall, 3-1 in CIAA play. While stats were not available for the game as of early Friday morning, we do know that Claflin ended a home-winning streak at Barco-Stevens Hall that extended back to November 2019. 

Down the road in Ettrick, VA, Virginia State beat Winston-Salem State 65-52 in a matchup that it never trailed in and was never really threatened in after the opening minutes. VSU led by as many as 20 points in the first half as WSSU went almost 10 minutes without hitting a field goal and was never able to cut the lead to less than nine the rest of the way.

Terrence Hunter-Whitfield led the way for VSU with 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field, including hitting four of his seven 3-point attempts. VSU improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA. WSSU fell to 10-3 overall, 2-2 in CIAA play.

Elsewhere in the CIAA, Fayetteville State edged out Lincoln 65-64 as a Darryl Myers layup with four seconds remaining propelled the CIAA South team over the CIAA North squad on the road. Tyler Foster led FSU with 21 points and six rebounds while Reggie Hudson finished with 26 for Lincoln. 

Livingstone College picked up a 92-84 win over Elizabeth City State on the road. Kyrie Temple paced Livingstone with 23 points in 29 minutes. 

Moses Mupungo paced St. Augustine’s with 21 points in its 73-64 win at Bowie State. He hit six of his seven 3-point attempts in the overtime win.

The CIAA North-South crossover continues on Saturday. The schedule is as follows:

Student-athlete Eric Henderson, a member of the Livingstone College Men’s Basketball Team, died tragically in a car accident on Dec. 26, 2022.

Mr. Henderson was a sophomore at Livingstone College, but a freshman on the basketball team, where he played the small forward position. 

He was an honor’s student and lived in the Honors Residence Hall.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., he was committed to the team and to Livingstone College. 

“He wanted to be at Livingstone College. He took pride in being a Blue Bear,” said James Stinson, Livingstone Men’s Basketball head coach. “He was willing to sacrifice to make sure everyone else was OK. He was the ultimate student-athlete.”

“Our thoughts of comfort and peace during this difficult time is extended to Eric’s family, friends, teammates and college family,” said Livingstone President Dr. Anthony J. Davis. 

Eric was also the great-nephew of Livingstone’s faculty assembly president, the Rev. Dr. Johnnie P. Henderson. 

“While it is difficult as a campus family to lose a fellow Blue Blue, we send our love to Eric’s family as they deal with this tragedy during the holidays,” Davis said.

“I understand Eric was well-mannered, a hard worker and always smiling and upbeat. May the memory of who he was bring some comfort to those who loved and knew him,” said Davis.

The Livingstone Men’s Basketball team is expected back to campus on Wednesday.

Fourteen decades and thousands of games later, North Carolina Central defeated Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl to close out yet another season of HBCU football. Millions watched as two teams played an exciting game that went into overtime with underdog NCCU beating Jackson State and Deion Sanders 41-34.

HBCU football eventually expanded from Delaware to Oklahoma, with dozens of spots in between. Many of the young men who would follow in the footsteps of the Livingstone and Biddle players have become the greatest ever to play the game. Perhaps more than that, though, the culture surrounding the game remains one-of-a-kind. 

What makes HBCU football special?

What makes HBCU football special? Here’s what some folks on Twitter had to say. 

“Watching games when I was at Morehouse in the ‘70’s. I saw Walter Payton, Too Tall Jones, Morris Stroud, Jackie Slater and more,” Howard University professor Dr. Harold Dean Trulear said. 

“It means family,” Morehouse and North Carolina A&T graduate Owen Lawson wrote. “It means community.  It means love and respect.  It means institution building.”

“HBCU football is my football foundation,” FAMU alumnus Keith Hadley responded. “The atmosphere is unmatched and the pageantry is next level. Especially when you have experienced Classics and Home games. I love the family atmosphere that is unique to HBCU football.

“They’re what make college football great: Representation. Tradition. Fun football. Great bands. Awesome student sections. Unique environments” wrote Christian Goeckel.

You could ask that question to a thousand people and probably get a thousand answers.

College football, at its core, is about passion, pride and pageantry – and HBCU football is its own special brand. It’s bigger than one school. One conference. One player. One coach.

By any measure – attendance, television ratings, cultural relevance – the football brand of historically black colleges is at an all-time high and only climbing higher. Here’s to another 131 years!

The first-ever ATL Has Got Something to Say HBCU Challenge tips off Friday at 1 p.m. and will feature four games between SIAC and CIAA men’s teams.

The play picks up Saturday at 10 a.m. with a local Atlanta high school game followed by five HBCU games. A clash between teams from the SWAC and MEAC is an added feature of Saturday’s line-up.

HBCU Challenge: The teams

The CIAA teams — Virginia Union University, Shaw University, Fayetteville State University and Livingstone College — will square off against SIAC squads from Albany State University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Tuskegee University and host Morehouse on Friday.

The CIAA and SIAC teams will switch opponents for the cross-conference competition on Saturday. Norfolk State University of the MEAC will meet Alabama A&M University of the SWAC in the 6 p.m. Div. I match up Saturday.

Showcasing HBCUs

Bringing teams together in one venue from all four HBCU conferences — the NCAA Div. II CIAA and SIAC and NCAA Div. I MEAC and SWAC — was pulled off by Travis L. Williams. His HBCU All-Stars LLC promotional group is also the outfit that put together the first-ever HBCU All-Star Game at this year’s Final Four in New Orleans. The game was carried live on CBS.

The Challenge is another way for the former head men’s basketball coach at Tennessee State and Fort Valley State to showcase HBCU hoops programs.

Demari Daniels helped Fayetteville State move the ball on offense, hooking up for a pair of touchdown passes to Barry Elliot in the first quarter. The first came with five minutes remaining in the quarter on a 66-yard breakaway pass. The second came with just 17 seconds remaining in the quarter as he found him for a 22 yard score to give the road team a 14-0 lead.

Elliot would find the end zone another time in the first half with an eight-yard run to lift his team to a 28-7 lead before the extended homecoming halftime.

The Broncos dominated all sides of the ball, but particularly at the line of scrimmage. They recorded eight sacks against the Blue Bears, and forced them into three turnovers. Cameron Merrell led the way with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss in a dominant effort.

Fayetteville State used a three-pronged quarterback attack against Livingstone, completing 14 of 21 passes for 201 yards and one interception. Redshirt freshman Caden Davis led the team in rushing with 90 yards, 63 of them coming on one run. K’hari Lane scored on quarterback sneak for the final touchdown of the game. FSU heads to Charlotte next weekend as it will take on Johnson C. Smith for its homecoming.

Livingstone was limited to just 168 yards of offense on 70 plays for an average of 2.4 yards per play. The loss dropped it to 2-5 on the season.

THE SERIES

Saturday’s game marks the 32^nd meeting between the two teams. Livingstone owns an 18-13 all-time record against Bowie State dating back to 1973. The Bulldogs are 9-8 at home against the Blue Bears entering Saturday’s game. The last meeting between the two teams, Bowie State blanked LC for a 49-0 win during the last meeting held on Sept. 25, 2021 in Salisbury, N.C.

Bowie State has won seven of the last 10 matches, including a two-game win streak entering Saturday’s game. The longest win-streak against LC was three-straight back in 2008-2011. The Blue Bears last victory against the Bulldogs came in 2014 (36-33) in Salisbury, NC.

LAST TIMEOUT

Bowie State (2-2, 1-1 CIAA) was able to erase a first half scare to defeat the Falcons of Saint Augustine’s, 36-20 at the George Williams Athletic Complex. The win snapped a two-game losing skid. The Bulldogs turned in season-high 503-yards of total offense that featured 251 through the air and a season-high 252 on the ground. For the first time this season, the Bulldogs went 4-for-4 in point after touchdown attempts and tallied three interceptions for 61-yards and a TD.

Redshirt sophomore Corey Johnson (Upper Marlboro, MD) rushed for a season-high 117-yards on 16 carries and a TD — the best for a Bulldog running back this season highlighted by a 70-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Graduate senior Dion Golatt, Jr. (Largo, MD) threw nine completions on 16 attempts for 130-yards to go along with two rushes for 30-yards and a rushing TD — his first of the season.

Three receivers had over 50-yards led by redshirt junior Keshane Hinckley (Laurel, MD) with 69-yards and five catches. Defensively, junior Cameron Proctor (Bryans Road, MD) recorded six tackles, two tackle for losses, a sack, a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble while redshirt sophomore Sadiq Salawu (Upper Marlboro, MD) tacked on five tackles. Of the Bulldogs four sacks, sophomore Tyshawn Blow (Chesapeake, VA) registered a 1.5 sack while graduate senior Ellison Jordan (Upper Marlboro, MD) posted one and junior Shaun Tolbert (Baltimore, MD) tacked .5.

THE BULLDOGS LEADERS

Bowie State averages 22.3 points per game (3rd in CIAA) after four games while their opponents post 24.3 points (8th CIAA). Golatt has completed 76 passes for 945 yards, six TDs and four interceptions, which all rank second in the CIAA. Samuel Doku (Silver Springs, MD) leads the run game unit for Bowie State as he ranks sixth in the CIAA with 51 carries for 222 yards and two TDs.

Hinckley continues to lead the Bulldogs receiving unit with 264 yards (3rd CIAA), 21 catches (3rd CIAA) and a TD. Redshirt senior Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) has a team-high 22 tackles (nine solo), 3.5 tackle for losses and 3.5 sacks while redshirt sophomore Keith Williams (Baltimore, MD) trumped 20 tackles, two interceptions, a pair of breakups and 1.5 tackle for loss.

STAT LINE AMONGST CIAA

Bowie State ranks third in the CIAA in offense having combined for 89 points including 12 TDs and now two field goals through four games this season. Notably the run game for BSU has struggled this season but against the Falcons last week the Bulldogs rushed for a season-high 252-yards 46 times and scored two rushing TDs in the contest. That game alone moved Bowie State up in the CIAA rankings for total rushing yards (532) from 10th to sixth. However, the Bulldogs have been quite the passing team this season, ranking second with 1,068 receiving yards (267.0) and six touchdowns.

Defensively, the Bulldogs rank fourth amongst the CIAA in points allowed by an opponent at 24.3 points. The rushing defense has allowed 462 yards through after four games (4th in CIAA) and 644-yards passing (4th in the CIAA) as the Bulldogs have allowed six touchdowns (5th in CIAA).

THE POLLS

Bowie State fell out of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) DII National rankings and the D2Football.com Top-25 list with the loss to Shaw in Week 3. Since, the Bulldogs remained ranked in the BOXTOROW Media Poll, HBCU DII Coaches Poll and HBCU GameDay’s DII Football Poll. This week, the Bulldogs moved up a spot in both the DII Coaches and Media Poll at No. 6 and No. 9 while in the HBCU Gameday DII Football Poll, Bowie State was No. 6 (week 4).

LIVINGSTONE BLUE BEARS

LC is 1-3 and 0-2 in the CIAA entering Saturday’s game. The Blue Bears suffered a 37-7 loss to Virginia State last outing and have not loss two-straight. LC trailed 16-0 at the half and scored their lone touchdown in the fourth on a 3-yard reception for Matthew Henry however, the Trojans were already up 37-0 when the Blue Bears scored with 3:47 left in the contest.

Myran Henderson led the Blue Bear defense with 13 tackles. Followed by Will Tims with nine. Kevin Larkins, Jr. and Ryan Hatter, Jr. both had seven tackles in Saturday evening’s game. Lazarus Anderson accounted for 115 yards of total offense (99 passing, 16 rushing). Matthew Henry led the Blue Bears in receiving with seven catches for 53 yards. Quandarious Smith led in rushing with 35 yards.

LC ranks 10th in offense, averaging 11.3 points per game amongst the CIAA while on defense they are ninth allowing 30.8 points from its opponents. The Blue Bears have scored just eight TDs through four games (12th in CIAA) and ranks last in the league in rushing (29.0), rushing defense (227.0) but they defend the pass game fairly well, currently atop in the CIAA allowing just 108.8 yards per outing.

Silas Cruse has the most yards at the QB position (472-yards) on 47 completions, four TDs and three interceptions. Tutson has a team-high 16 carries (55-yards) while Lasirton Bryant has 185 receiving yards (19 catches) and two TDs. Defensively, Jaden Echols has collected 27 tackles, followed by Will Tims (19) and Mekhi Dunlap (17) round out the top tacklers for the Blue Bears.
