On Tuesday, Tennessee State University dealt with an unexpected disruption when a group of MAGA demonstrators entered the campus without approval. The group identifies as the Fearless Tour and set up a “debate table” on campus without permission.

The individuals were not connected to TSU and arrived without the permits required for campus protests. According to policy, all demonstrations need prior authorization.

According to the group’s X account, they arrived with posters saying “DEI should be illegal” and “Deport All Illegals Now,” under the pretense of having an organic debate.

Campus police and staff acted quickly. They escorted the group from university grounds without incident.

TSU’s First Statement

The university released its first statement soon after the disruption. TSU clarified that the demonstrators were unauthorized and praised students for handling the situation professionally and respectfully.

The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff remain our highest priority,” the statement read.

Student Government Association Statement

Later in the day, the TSU Student Government Association (SGA) addressed the community.

Executive President Calvin Pickett Jr. and Vice President Sir James Ford signed the letter. They strongly condemned the demonstrators’ actions and message.

This kind of behavior has no place on our campus, and we do not accept nor condone the messages they attempted to promote,” the SGA stated.

The leaders also pledged to work with TSU administration and public officials. They promised to ensure that every student feels safe, respected, and valued.

TSU’s Safety Enhancements from June

Tuesday’s incident occurred just months after TSU announced a 10-Point Campus Safety Enhancement Plan in June 2025.

The plan introduced:

 • Expanded patrols with Metro Nashville Police.
 • Greater visibility for TSU police and bicycle patrols.
 • Upgraded lighting, surveillance, and access systems.
 • A new student safety patrol program led by volunteers.

These steps aimed to strengthen readiness and keep the community secure. As a result, Tuesday’s quick response showed how those enhancements already support campus safety.

Looking Ahead

Tennessee State officials and the SGA both stressed that the university will not allow unauthorized demonstrations designed to divide the community.

The fast actions of campus police and staff — combined with the professionalism of students — demonstrated TSU’s strong commitment to creating a safe environment.

In one of the most dramatic HBCU games of the season, Alabama A&M erased a halftime deficit and stunned Tennessee State 23-21 at Nissan Stadium. Alabama A&M leaned on quarterback Cornelious Brown’s arm and Victor Barbosa’s steady leg, proving once again why the Bulldogs are a dangerous force in the SWAC. For the 10,208 fans in attendance, this was more than a September game—it was a statement for HBCU football.

First-Half Momentum

Alabama A&M started hot with an early 10-0 lead behind Brown’s sharp passing. But Tennessee State roared back, using a pair of touchdowns from running back Kendric Rhymes—one on the ground and one through the air—to build a 21-13 halftime advantage.

Brown’s Big Day

Quarterback Cornelious Brown kept Alabama A&M alive with a composed performance. He went 21-of-33 for 329 yards and two touchdowns. Travaunta Abner led all receivers with six catches for 104 yards, while Myles Parker and Daveon Walker provided crucial scoring receptions.

Barbosa Delivers in HBCU classic

Special teams made the difference. Victor Barbosa went a perfect 3-for-3 on field goals, including the 45-yard kick late in the third quarter that sealed the win. His consistency shifted the momentum back to Alabama A&M when the Bulldogs needed it most.

Defensive Impact

The Bulldogs’ defense clamped down in the second half against the Tennessee HBCU. Alabama A&M recorded four sacks, with Wyatt Wright and Kylon Roberts each breaking through at key moments. Joshua Bledsoe’s interception in the fourth quarter stopped a potential TSU drive cold.

Rhymes Shines for TSU

Tennessee State still had bright spots. Kendric Rhymes carried 24 times for 111 yards and caught seven passes for 64 yards with a touchdown. Zack Simmons-Brown added 75 rushing yards and another score, but the Tigers’ offense was silenced after halftime.

Why It Matters

The win lifts Alabama A&M to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in SWAC play, providing early confidence as conference action heats up. For Tennessee State, the loss stings as they prepare for OVC competition. This HBCU matchup not only energized the 10,208 fans at Nissan Stadium but also reinforced Alabama A&M’s standing as one of the most resilient programs in the SWAC.

The John A. Merritt Classic kicked off the HBCU football season in thrilling fashion, and Tennessee State University’s (TSU) newest star made sure all eyes were on him. Running back Kendric Rhymes, a transfer from Southern University, wasted no time leaving his mark in Nashville.

From Southern University to Tennessee State

Rhymes spent three seasons at Southern, amassing 1,993 yards and 26 touchdowns. Known for his explosive running style, he was a consistent threat for the Tigers.

After entering the transfer portal, Rhymes found a new home at Tennessee State University (TSU) under Head Coach Reggie Barlow, formerly of the DC Defenders in the UFL. Barlow is stepping into the shoes of Eddie George and has immediately found a playmaker in Rhymes.

A Breakout HBCU Debut

In his TSU debut against North Carolina A&T, Rhymes got off to a slow start but exploded in the second half. He broke free for two massive touchdowns—one from 50 yards and another from 60 yards—turning the game in the Tigers’ favor.

Rhymes finished the game with 21 carries for 181 rushing yards, surpassing the 2,000-yard milestone for his career.

“I didn’t even know that I did it with that milestone, but it feels great,” Rhymes said after the game. “Obviously, the job’s not done. I’m looking forward to getting 3,000 this year.”

Praise for the Offensive Line

Rhymes credited his teammates, especially the offensive line, for his performance.

“Yesterday, my job was just to hit the gas and play my own line. They made the gas for me—they made the holes. I just had to pay off,” he said.

He also highlighted the team’s chemistry in his first game together. “I got some dogs—all five of them. This is all our first time playing together, so we just came together, and we knew we had today. We knew we had to come out with that mindset.”

HBCU Tennessee State University Kendric Rhymes
Team Effort Leads to Close Win

The Tigers relied on more than just Rhymes’ heroics. TSU’s offensive line and defense kept the momentum, allowing Rhymes to maximize every opportunity.

“We came together as a team and helped each other out. They kept going, kept being hungry to go hunt for some more. And that’s what we did,” Rhymes said.

After the 60-yard touchdown, he added, “The offense loosened up a little bit. My job was to trust the line, trust the guys in front of me, and just keep going.”

Rhymes’ performance earned him Offensive MVP honors, and it set the tone for the season.

Why This Matters for HBCU Football

Kendric Rhymes’ debut demonstrates the level of talent in HBCU football. Not only did he help Tennessee State secure a win, but he also showcased how HBCU programs can develop elite players who make immediate impacts.

As the season continues, TSU fans have every reason to be excited. If Rhymes’ first game is any indication, he could be one of the most impactful transfers in HBCU football this year.

Tennessee State University (TSU) basketball is making big moves, and the Tigers just got a major boost on the sidelines. Former Duke MBB star turned TSU hoops head coach Nolan Smith announced that former NBA veteran DerMarr Johnson will join his HBCU staff as an assistant coach for the 2025–26 season.

A Big-Time Addition for TSU

Johnson, a 6-foot-9 Washington, D.C. native, isn’t just another name in the coaching carousel—he’s a former lottery pick, a 16-year pro, and a player who once defined versatility before “unicorn” became a buzzword. He logged seven seasons in the NBA with the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, and San Antonio Spurs before extending his career overseas in nearly a dozen countries.

Now, he brings that wealth of experience to an HBCU program eager to rise under Smith, the former Duke standout and national champion.

“He comes here with a hunger to be a part of something big,” Smith said. “At 6-foot-9, Coach was one of the original unicorns. He has the blueprint to now teach it to the current and future Tigers.”

From High School Phenom to NBA Lottery Pick

Johnson’s story started with hype few could match. At Maine Central Institute, he was named Parade National High School Player of the Year in 1999. He then starred at Cincinnati under Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins. In his lone season with the Bearcats, Johnson averaged 13 points per game, earned Conference USA Freshman of the Year, and helped lead a team ranked No. 1 nationally for 12 weeks alongside Kenyon Martin.

That spring, Johnson declared for the NBA Draft and went sixth overall to the Hawks. His pro career was nearly derailed after a devastating car accident fractured four vertebrae in his neck. But Johnson battled back, carving out 344 NBA appearances before taking his game around the globe.

NBA HBCU Tennessee State University DerMarr Johnson Nolan Smith
Building His Coaching Resume

When the playing days ended, DerMarr Johnson transitioned into coaching. He returned to Cincinnati in 2017 as a student assistant while completing his degree, then moved into player development. His stops included Cincinnati, where he ran individual growth plans for the Bearcats, and West Virginia, where he spent two seasons on Bob Huggins’ staff.

That mix of playing pedigree, international experience, and developmental chops is exactly what excites Nolan Smith about adding Johnson to Tennessee State’s bench.

What It Means for TSU and HBCU Hoops

For Tennessee State University, the move is more than just filling a coaching seat. It’s a statement. Smith, who’s still building his coaching identity after years in the ACC spotlight, now has a trusted friend and proven basketball mind beside him. Together, the duo blends blue-blood basketball DNA with NBA and international credentials—an attractive combination for recruits who want to see a clear path from HBCU gyms to the pros.

HBCU basketball is already riding momentum, with more players earning pro looks and more programs investing in top-tier staffs. Adding an NBA vet like Johnson to TSU’s sideline is another sign that the gap is closing.

For Smith and Johnson, though, the goal is simple: build a culture of winning in Nashville. And the Tigers’ journey just got a serious shot of credibility.

]]>
Tennessee State University is preparing to break ground on a $50 million engineering building. This project is intended to reshape the school’s research capacity. Underscoring the expanding role of HBCU alums in helping to meet workforce demands.

Approved by the Tennessee State Building Commission on Aug. 15, the nearly 70,000-square-foot facility will consolidate the university’s engineering and Applied & Industrial Technology programs under one roof. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion expected in summer 2027.

Expanding Capacity

“This new building is a substantial investment in the College of Engineering,” said Lin Li, dean of the college. “Over the years, our college has experienced significant growth in students, faculty, research, and academic programs. This facility will provide a world-class space that enhances interdisciplinary collaboration.”

The complex will house classrooms, computer labs, and more than 30 teaching and research laboratories, including a Future Energy Lab, an Additive Manufacturing Lab, and a Drone Flight and Air Traffic Lab. University officials said these additions are designed to give students hands-on training in areas of rising demand.

A Regional Hub

Located in Nashville, a city that has grown into a center for healthcare, technology, and advanced manufacturing, Tennessee State University sees the new facility as both a recruiting tool and an opportunity to forge stronger partnerships with industry.

“The new engineering building is the first step in elevating Tennessee State University’s engineering program to meet the demands of industry and the state of Tennessee,” said Will Radford, assistant vice president of planning, design, and construction. “By establishing new partnerships and providing modern facilities. We are positioning TSU engineering students to not only keep pace but to set standards in the industry.”

Melvin Gill & Associates and Bauer Askew Architecture are designing the project, working alongside TSU’s Planning, Design, and Construction team.

HBCU Tennessee State University engineering
Leadership’s View

University President Dwayne Tucker framed the project as part of a broader push to position Tennessee State as a “future-ready” institution.

“This building represents an opportunity for innovation and leadership,” Mr. Tucker said. “Tennessee State University is preparing the next generation of engineers who will shape our state and our nation. This investment ensures that our students have access to the tools, spaces, and experiences necessary to compete globally.”

Mr. Tucker added that the project also reflects the university’s mission of providing access and impact, while addressing the growing demand for engineers in Tennessee and beyond.

Broader Significance

The investment marks one of the largest single academic infrastructure projects at an HBCU in recent years. As federal and state policymakers emphasize the role of minority-serving institutions in diversifying the workforce, Tennessee State’s project signals the increasing visibility of HBCUs in advanced fields such as engineering and technology.

When completed in 2027, the facility will stand as a physical upgrade and a symbol of how HBCU institutions position themselves at the intersection of higher education and industry demand.

Two weeks before Tennessee State’s highly anticipated HBCU football season opener against North Carolina A&T, the Tigers have taken a massive hit to their secondary. Defensive back Camani Cobbs, a preseason HBCU All-American, announced on his X.com account that he is entering the transfer portal.

“I will be entering the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility. Thank you Tennessee State University for allowing me to develop and build as a man on and off the field,” Cobbs wrote.

The move is a surprising one considering the timing and Cobb’s recent accolades. Just last month, he was selected to the 2025 HBCU College Football Preseason All-America Team by BoxToRow.com and also landed on the OVC/Big South Preseason Watch List.

Building Momentum, Then Walking Away

Cobbs, a redshirt sophomore from McDonough, Georgia, transferred to TSU from conference rival Southeast Missouri last year. He quickly carved out a role in the Tigers’ defense, appearing in seven games while recording seven total tackles and two pass breakups. His flashes of talent helped him earn preseason recognition, making his sudden departure even more of a blow to the Tigers’ depth chart.

Tennessee State’s season opener against NCAT was already shaping up as a tone-setter for a program in transition. Now, losing one of their defensive anchors just weeks before kickoff makes the challenge even steeper.

A Program in Flux

Cobb’s exit is part of a larger story in Nashville. Tennessee State’s roster has been in flux since Eddie George’s transition to Reggie Barlow as head coach. Barlow, who inherits the program after George’s tenure, is essentially starting fresh.

Zach McKinney, Senior Editor and Owner of FCS Football Central on Sports Illustrated, summed up the situation bluntly on social media:

“Another loss for Tennessee State… The Tigers only return 5 significant contributors (Players who played over 200 snaps) from last year’s FCS Playoff squad. It’ll be a completely new roster on Aug. 30 when North Carolina A&T travels to Nashville.”

That type of turnover is difficult for any program to withstand. Camani Cobbs was supposed to be one of the few stabilizing pieces bridging the old roster to the new. Instead, his departure adds yet another hurdle for a team already searching for an identity.

What Comes Next

For Cobbs, entering the portal with three years of eligibility gives him leverage and time. Preseason honors suggest he’ll draw interest while in the portal, especially those looking for an experienced defensive back with proven ability in coverage.

HBCU Tennessee State Camani Cobbs HBCU All-American

For Tennessee State, however, the challenge is immediate. The Tigers must regroup quickly before opening against NCAT on August 30 in Nashville. With an almost entirely overhauled roster and now the loss of a preseason HBCU All-American, TSU’s defense will be tested early and often.

HBCU football thrives on storylines of resilience, and Tennessee State will need plenty of it. The Tigers enter 2025 not just looking to defend their playoff spot, but to prove that even with a roster in transition, they remain a force in the HBCU football landscape.

This leaves Tennessee State University, the lone HBCU in the league, as an HBCU power in a conference with dwindling membership. Tennessee Tech University announced it will leave the OVC after the 2025–26 season to join the Southern Conference (SoCon).

The move ends a relationship with the OVC that began in 1949. Effective July 1, 2026, the Golden Eagles’ move adds a program fresh off a 2024 football championship and a preseason Top 25 ranking to one of the nation’s oldest and most tradition-rich leagues.

For Tech, the decision is about geography, rivalries, and stability. For Tennessee State University, it’s about what comes next.

A Partnership Born of Necessity — and Now Shrinking

The OVC–Big South football association was formed in 2021 as a lifeline for two conferences struggling with shrinking memberships. The idea was to combine football programs into a single competitive group while maintaining separate league identities in other sports. At its height, the alliance featured nine football-playing schools — not a huge number, but enough to sustain playoff eligibility and healthy competition.

But each offseason has brought change. Bryant, Lindenwood, and others came aboard; Kennesaw State and North Alabama moved on. Now, Tennessee Tech’s exit is the latest hit. Leaving the league flirting with single-digit membership in a sport where stability often means double digits.

In an era where “super leagues” with 12 or more football members are becoming the norm, a slim roster puts you on shaky ground.

HBCU Tennessee State University OVC-Big South
Parallels With the CAA’s HBCU Experiment

If this feels familiar to HBCU fans, it’s because two other high-profile programs — Hampton and North Carolina A&T — are in a similar situation. Both HBCU power brands left the MEAC for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). They sought broader exposure and tougher competition, but the CAA has faced its own realignment churn.

The CAA and OVC–Big South situations highlight a broader truth: conference realignment rarely stops moving. Every departure reignites the long-standing conversation among HBCU circles about whether these outlier programs should return to the SWAC or MEAC, seek another FCS league, or take an even bigger swing toward FBS.

The Case for a SWAC or MEAC Reunion

Joining the SWAC often tops speculation lists. With its 12 current members, the conference is a powerhouse among HBCU leagues in terms of attendance, alumni visibility in professional sports, and cultural relevance. TSU’s Nashville location would add a major-market program to the conference’s Western Division and instantly revive rivalries steeped in Black college football tradition.

Others point to the MEAC. Currently hosting eight members, six of whom play football, the MEAC has a clear identity, ESPN broadcast ties, and automatic access to the Celebration Bowl. Joining the MEAC would bring TSU into a conference with historic HBCU brands like Howard, South Carolina State, and North Carolina Central. While potentially giving the league a stronger foothold west of the Carolinas.

Interest isn’t just hypothetical. Alumni petitions and media reports reveal spirited calls for TSU to rejoin an HBCU league. Underlining both personal and institutional desire to return to traditional affiliations. At least preliminary conversations with SWAC officials have reportedly taken place, though nothing formal has materialized yet.

The Decision Facing Tennessee State

Tennessee State University’s position is unique. A charter OVC football member since 1988, the Tigers have maintained HBCU cultural ties while chasing championships outside traditional Black college leagues. But with the OVC–Big South’s future uncertain, now might be the moment to consider a change.

On-Field Outlook

On the field, TSU is in a noteworthy moment. Eddie George brought star power when he took over in 2021 and led the Tigers back to the FCS playoffs in 2024 — their first appearance since 2013.

Now, the program hands the reins to Reggie Barlow. Barlow is known for disciplined, physical teams and strong recruiting ties in Black college football. Whether his Tigers are chasing OVC–Big South titles or a new league’s crown in the coming years remains to be seen. But with Tennessee Tech’s exit, one thing’s clear. The clock feels like it’s ticking for Tennessee State to decide where it belongs in the ever-changing college football landscape.

Shannon Harris has officially been named the head coach of the DC Defenders, the team announced Wednesday. Harris led the Defenders to the 2025 UFL Championship while serving as interim head coach and will now return to lead the franchise in 2026. The news comes just one week after he was introduced as the new offensive coordinator at Tennessee State University, a Nashville, TN HBCU.

A Surprise Move After Tennessee State Hiring

After accepting the Tennessee State offensive coordinator position last week, many assumed Harris was leaving the UFL. But today’s announcement confirmed that he will stay with the DC Defenders, managing dual coaching responsibilities across the college and pro levels.

“Shannon Harris isn’t just a remarkable UFL story—he’s one of the most inspiring figures in all of sports this year,” said UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon. “He kept his team united and motivated, guiding them to the 2025 UFL Championship and finishing as the league’s top team. We’re excited to see Shannon back on the sidelines in 2026 as DC begins its title defense.”

From Interim to Champion

Harris was promoted to interim head coach of the Defenders on March 23, 2025, after former head coach and HBCU legend Reggie Barlow left to take over the Tennessee State program. With just days to prepare, Harris took charge and quickly proved himself as a leader.

The Defenders went 6-4 in the regular season, improved from their 4-6 record in 2024. In the playoffs, DC defeated the St. Louis Battlehawks 36-18 in the XFL Conference Championship, then dominated the Michigan Panthers 58-34 in the UFL Championship Game.

“Taking over at the start of the season is challenging, but Shannon created continuity with the team culture while putting his own mark on the Defenders,” said UFL EVP of Football Operations Daryl Johnston. “His promotion to head coach is well deserved.”

Championship Season Highlights

Harris led the Defenders to a fast start with a Week One victory over the defending champion Birmingham Stallions. The 18-11 win featured a franchise-high eight sacks. DC went 4-1 through the first five games, including wins over Memphis, St. Louis, and Arlington.

Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu thrived under Harris. Through 10 games, Ta’amu led the UFL in passing touchdowns (17) and ranked second in passing yards (2,294) and total yards (2,333). He was named MVP of the UFL Championship Game after throwing for 390 yards and five total touchdowns.

DC’s defense also excelled:

 • First in tackles for loss (59)
 • Tied for first in takeaways (17)
 • Top 3 in forced fumbles (9), sacks (22), and interceptions (7)

Harris’ Statement and What Comes Next

“I am beyond excited for this opportunity to lead the DC Defenders, especially our players, coaches and support staff,” said Harris. “The DC community has the best fans in all sports, and I look forward to returning to the field next spring when we begin our quest for a second straight title.”

As of now, Harris has not commented publicly on how he plans to balance his duties as both the DC Defenders head coach and Tennessee State offensive coordinator.

What’s clear is that Harris has become one of the most compelling coaching figures in football—at both the professional and HBCU level.

]]>
Tennessee State University is loading its schedule with heavyweight matchups—not by accident. TSU Athletic Director Mikki Allen confirmed this week that the HBCU will take on three Southeastern Conference (SEC) powerhouses. Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and a trip to Middle Tennessee State over the next four years.

These are not just football games; they’re potential turning points in a new era for the HBCU program.

In March, Tennessee State parted ways with NFL legend Eddie George and handed the reins to another former pro, Reggie Barlow. Barlow arrives with Super Bowl credibility and HBCU coaching roots at Alabama State. TSU sits near the bottom of the projected 2025 OVC/Big South standings. These SEC matchups could expose or elevate the program under Barlow’s leadership.

And that’s the point.

“You’re talking about SEC games. You’re talking about great tradition programs like Georgia, like Tennessee, and, of course, like Vanderbilt,” Barlow said. “It’s a huge task and a huge challenge. But I just look forward to being in that atmosphere and that environment.”

A New Era, A New Test

Barlow replaces George, who brought star power but struggled to gain consistent traction on the field. Now, the Tigers hope that Barlow’s coaching acumen and connections—he coached at Alabama State from 2007 to 2014 and was part of a UFL championship with the Birmingham Stallions—can translate into wins and visibility for TSU.

These games will help with both.

2026 TSU will travel to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs, the back-to-back national champions. Then, in 2027, the Tigers are tentatively scheduled to play the Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium. However, Allen is lobbying to make that a historic showdown in Nashville’s soon-to-be-opened Nissan Stadium.

HBCU SEC
Tennessee State University

“It’s going to be a special game,” Allen said. “We’re here by the state capital and would love to play that game in the inaugural year at the new Nissan Stadium.”

That’s a meaningful matchup for Allen personally. He played on Tennessee’s 1998 national championship team and has been working behind the scenes to make it happen.

TSU will follow those up with Middle Tennessee State in 2028 and Vanderbilt in 2029, continuing a strategy of early-season, high-profile matchups that offer exposure and guaranteed paydays.

“That’s strong, that’s really strong,” Allen added. “We’ve got some Super Bowl champs [on staff]… so that gave us a lot of connections with some of these bigger programs to work these games out.”

Measuring Stick for a Rebuild

For a Tennessee State University program that hasn’t played an FBS opponent since a 56–3 loss to Notre Dame in 2023, the leap back into this competition tier is bold and strategic.

While wins in these contests might be long shots, the experiences, recruiting implications, and national exposure can be transformative for an HBCU program like TSU. These are measuring stick moments, especially for Barlow as he begins rebuilding trust, culture, and competitiveness in Nashville.

He’s not shying away from the pressure.

“Just being able to go and play in those stadiums and get that experience for our young men here and our coaches is going to be exciting,” Barlow said.

Tennessee State may be near the bottom of the OVC/Big South preseason rankings, but they aim for the top of the conversation. These SEC showdowns won’t just test their talent. They’ll define the early chapters of Reggie Barlow’s regime and reaffirm TSU’s ambition to become a rising force among HBCUs and beyond.

Tennessee State University alumnus Shannon Harris made history this summer. As interim head coach, he led the DC Defenders to a dominant 58–34 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the UFL Championship Game on June 14, 2025, securing the franchise’s first UFL title. It was the first time an HBCU graduate coached a professional football team to a championship. Now Harris is listed on the Tennessee State University athletics website as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

A former quarterback for TSU in the early 2000s, Harris stepped into the interim head coach role on March 22, 2025. That change followed Reggie Barlow’s departure from the Defenders to become TSU’s new head coach.

Despite the late-season transition, Harris guided the Defenders to a 6–4 regular-season record. He then led the team through the playoffs and claimed the championship.

In recognition of his leadership, Harris earned the 2025 UFL Coach of the Year Award, officially named the Buddy Teevens Award. He became the first HBCU alumnus to receive the honor, marking a major milestone in HBCU representation in professional football.

Now back at TSU, Harris joins the staff in a key leadership role. His return is a full-circle moment. Along with playing for the Tigers, he has coached at Virginia State, Alcorn State, Alabama State, and Tennessee State.

Harris brings championship experience and deep Tiger pride to the program. His presence strengthens TSU’s mission to develop an explosive offense. With his leadership, Tennessee State University football looks to rise in the Ohio Valley Conference and beyond.

Tennessee State University has announced Nolan Smith as the new head coach of its men’s basketball team, bringing in a former NBA player, national champion at Duke University, and one of the most respected young minds in college basketball to the Nashville HBCU.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be named head coach at TSU,” Smith said. “I’m ready to pour my heart into our players every single day as we chase victories and represent both the university and the state with pride. I’m built for this — and TSU is built to win. Let’s go Tigers!”

Coaching Experience at Memphis, Louisville, and Duke

Smith comes to TSU after one season as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis under Penny Hardaway. At Memphis, he played a key role in recruiting and player development. He helped guide a young team through a tough schedule and a competitive conference.

Before that, Smith spent two years at the University of Louisville. He focused on mentoring guards and shaping the roster. His coaching foundation was built at Duke, where he served on staff for six years.

At Duke, Smith held several roles. He began as a special assistant, then became director of basketball operations, and later an assistant coach. During his time there, Duke reached the NCAA Tournament multiple times. That included a Final Four run in 2022. He also helped develop 25 future NBA players.

Leadership Endorsed by Peers and Mentors

TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen praised Smith’s leadership qualities.

“Nolan Smith is a championship-caliber leader with elite playing experience, high basketball IQ, and a proven track record of developing NBA talent,” said Allen. “He brings strong recruiting connections and a player-first mindset. He also connects deeply with today’s student-athletes. Nolan will lead with integrity and make an impact both on the court and in the community.”

Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway also voiced strong support.

“If anyone is deserving of this position, it’s Nolan,” said Hardaway. “He is prepared and ready. His time at Memphis was short but meaningful. I’m confident he’ll make a big impact at TSU.”

Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, who coached Smith at Duke, shared his excitement.

“I’m so happy for Nolan and his beautiful family,” said Krzyzewski. “He was a joy to coach. Our fans called him ‘The People’s Champ.’ He was also an excellent assistant coach. Now, he’s ready to be a great head coach at Tennessee State.”

Successful Playing Career at Duke, NBA Draft Pick

As a player, Smith starred at Duke from 2007 to 2011. He helped the Blue Devils win the NCAA championship in 2010. That year, he earned All-Final Four honors and was named the South Regional Most Outstanding Player.

In his senior season, Smith averaged 20.6 points per game and led the ACC in scoring. He was named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP, and a consensus First-Team All-American. He finished his college career with 1,911 points, ranking 17th in Duke history.

Smith was drafted 21st overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2011 NBA Draft. He played two seasons in the NBA, followed by time in the G League and overseas. His international career included stops in Croatia and Turkey.

Commitment to Community and Advocacy

Off the court, Smith is active in the community. He serves on the board of “The Brotherhood,” a nonprofit based in Durham, North Carolina. The group focuses on mentorship and education for young men of color.

Smith is also a national voice for mental health awareness and racial equity in college athletics. He advocates for student-athlete rights and personal growth beyond sports.

He is the son of the late Derek Smith, a former NBA player and coach. Smith and his wife, Cheyna, have three children: Camryn, Derek “Deuce,” and Kai.

TSU’s Strong Foundation for 2025 Season

Tennessee State is coming off a 17–16 record in the 2024–25 season. The Tigers went 12–8 in Ohio Valley Conference play, finishing third in the standings. TSU ranked among the conference leaders in rebounding and returns a solid core of players.

Key returners include guards Aaron Nkrumah and Travis Harper II, along with forward Carlous Williams.

Introduction Set for July 21

TSU will introduce Nolan Smith at a press conference on Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. CT. The event will take place in the Tiger Den inside Hankal Hall on the Tennessee State University campus..

Former Edward Waters University head football coach Toriano Morgan is returning to familiar territory—his HBCU alma mater. Morgan has accepted a position on the coaching staff at Tennessee State University under head coach Reggie Barlow.

Morgan, who took over at Edward Waters in 2021, steps away just ahead of the 2025 season. For him, the decision was deeply personal and rooted in legacy.

Tenure at EWU

During his tenure at Edward Waters, Morgan guided the Tigers through a pivotal transition from NAIA competition to NCAA Division II status. Though EWU is still seeking sustained success in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), Morgan’s leadership helped the program make meaningful strides.

Before arriving at Edward Waters, Morgan built an impressive résumé as both a high school head coach and college coordinator. He has mentored 13 players who made it to the National Football League and was selected to the NFL’s Coaching Academy in 2022, a prestigious program for rising coaching talent. That same year, he was named to FootballScoop’s Rising Star Coaches Watch List.

Toriano Morgan heads to Nashville to coach at his Alma Mater, TSU.

Nicknamed “Mr. 180” for his reputation in turning programs around, Morgan quickly left his mark at Edward Waters. In 2022, he led Edward Waters University to its first winning season in over 20 years with a 6–4 record. The following season, EWU broke into the HBCU national rankings for the first time as a full SIAC member. The Tigers reached No. 8 in polls published by BoxToRow, HBCU Sports, and HBCU D2.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Morgan has previously coached at Virginia State, Virginia Union, and the historic Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale. He launched his coaching career in 2002 as a graduate assistant at Tennessee State, where he also shined as a player. As a Tiger, Morgan helped lead Tennessee State University to back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference titles and consecutive FCS playoff appearances. He served as team captain in his senior season.

Now back in Nashville, Morgan is looking to help elevate Tennessee State to even greater heights.

New HBCU coach Reggie Barlow has something to prove.

The post Tennessee State Gets No Respect in First Post-Eddie George Poll appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

A year after Tennessee State made a triumphant return to the FCS playoffs under Eddie George, the Tigers are being treated like underdogs heading into 2025. Despite placing six players on the Preseason Players to Watch list, TSU was picked to finish eighth out of nine in the OVC-Big South Football Association’s preseason coaches poll.

That’s not exactly the welcome Reggie Barlow might’ve envisioned for his first year leading the Tigers. But the new head coach, a championship winner at nearly every level he’s coached, isn’t sweating the low expectations.

“That preseason poll is cute. But it is what it is… The game is won on a rectangle in between white lines,” Barlow said at Media Day.

“We’re no strangers to this… At Alabama State, we were picked in a similar situation, ended up playing for the championship. Same at Virginia State. Same in the UFL—we were picked last and played for the title.”

From George to Barlow: Changing of the Guard

Barlow inherits a TSU program that reached the 2024 FCS playoffs before Eddie George departed for Bowling Green. George’s tenure at Tennessee State was marked by growing pains, but his final season was a long-awaited breakthrough for the HBCU program.

The transition between coaches has been smooth.

“Eddie (George) and I were drafted the same year in 1996… When I got this job, he reached out and told me if I needed anything, I could call him,” Barlow shared.

Now, it’s Barlow’s turn to carry the torch—and his resume should raise eyebrows. He led Alabama State and Virginia State to winning seasons, then guided the D.C. Defenders to the 2023 XFL North Division title and a spot in the championship game. Though they fell just short that season, the Defenders won the 2025 UFL Championship shortly after Barlow left to take the TSU job—a testament to the foundation he helped build.

Yet, in the eyes of many OVC-Big South coaches, he remains unproven in this setting.

Talent is There—But Respect Isn’t

Despite the low ranking, TSU’s roster features plenty of returning talent. Wide receiver Delanie “Juice” Majors, tight end Jason Hoath Jr., and veteran lineman Anthony Smith headline the offense. Defensively, linebacker Sammy Taylor and defensive back Camani Cobbs were also recognized, along with punter Mark Shenouda on special teams.

Still, Barlow had to rebuild fast.

“When we got the job, we had to hit the ground running,” he said. “We brought in about 25 transfers. The opportunity for young guys is what I’m excited about.”

He’s also installed a new identity, shaped by what he calls his “Live the DASH” philosophy: “Discipline, Attitude, Sacrifice, Habits, and Heart. If our habits don’t align with our expectations, we’ll never reach our goals.”

Tennessee State Eddie George OVC-Big South
Let Them Doubt

Barlow’s message to doubters is simple: let them count us out. “This is Tennessee State University. The tradition, the history—Oprah Winfrey, Big Joe Gilliam, Earth, Wind & Fire. It’s a special place,” he said. “We want to embrace that legacy and build something new on top of it.”

Eyes on August 30

The Tigers open their 2025 OVC-Big South campaign at home in Nissan Stadium against North Carolina A&T, another proud HBCU program with its own legacy to uphold. It’s the kind of matchup that can set the tone for a program still navigating transition.

One thing is clear: Barlow and the Tigers don’t need preseason votes to define their season. But they’ll gladly take the underdog role if it means proving the doubters wrong.

Former Duke University star and current Memphis assistant coach Nolan Smith is reportedly in discussions to become the next head coach at Tennessee State University. According to Jon Rothstein, the deal is not finalized, but both sides are working toward an agreement. If completed, the move would mark a major hire for the HBCU program, which lost Penny Collins to the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies earlier this summer.

A Rising Coaching Resume

Smith has steadily climbed the coaching ranks since retiring from professional basketball. He joined the Memphis staff in September 2024 after two seasons at Louisville under Kenny Payne. Before his time at Louisville, he spent six years at Duke University in multiple roles. These included director of basketball operations, player development, and assistant coach during the 2021–22 season.

Decorated Playing Career at Duke

As a player, Smith was one of the most decorated in Duke University history. He earned consensus first-team All-American honors and was named ACC Player of the Year in 2011. That season, he led the conference in scoring (20.6 points per game) and served as team captain. He also won MVP honors in the ACC Tournament.

Smith played a key role in Duke’s 2010 national championship run. He earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the NCAA South Regional and was named to the All-Final Four Team. Over his four-year college career, he scored 1,911 points, ranking 17th in Duke history. His teams went 121-22 overall, including an incredible 65-2 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Potential New Chapter at an HBCU

If hired, the position at Tennessee State would be Smith’s first head coaching job. It would also represent a significant moment for the Nashville-based HBCU, which continues to seek national recognition. Smith brings not only high-level basketball experience but also a strong record of community involvement. He’s been honored by Points of Light and The News & Observer for his work in social justice and cancer awareness.

The potential hire could signal a turning point for Tennessee State. The HBCU had success with the high profile hire of Eddie George who led the program to the FCS playoffs.

Originally set to make history as the first ice hockey team at a public Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the 2025–26 season, the program will now reportedly aim for a 2026–27 launch.

As reported by The Tennessean, the delay stems from a mix of financial and logistical challenges, including the lack of a home rink, limited fundraising, and broader uncertainty around the university’s financial health. A source familiar with the situation confirmed the postponement, though no official announcement has been made.

The men’s hockey team was first unveiled at Bridgestone Arena in 2023 ahead of the NHL Draft, marking a groundbreaking step for HBCUs and the sport’s diversification. However, the excitement has been tempered by concerns that have built over the past two years.

Tennessee State has faced significant internal turmoil, including leadership turnover, declining enrollment, and budget deficits. Interim President Dwayne Tucker, who took office in December, warned earlier this year that the school would run out of funding without immediate intervention. In response, Tucker developed a five-year financial plan and negotiated with state officials for $96 million in funding, which was approved in June. That money, redirected from infrastructure reserves, is expected to stabilize the university’s operations. It remains unclear if any of those funds will support athletics or the delayed hockey program.

Despite the setbacks, supporters hope the program can regroup and make its long-awaited debut in 2026–27, keeping alive the vision of expanding hockey into new and more diverse communities.

HBCU coach Brian “Penny” Collins is officially headed to the NBA. The Tennessee State University head men’s basketball coach has stepped down from his role to accept a coaching position in the NBA, marking a major leap from the HBCU ranks to professional basketball.

Collins’ departure ends a seven-year tenure at TSU, where he played a pivotal role in rebuilding and restoring the men’s basketball program. His leadership helped reestablish Tennessee State as a competitive force in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), highlighted by a semifinal appearance in the 2024 OVC Tournament and a 17-16 overall record last season.

Throughout his time at TSU, Collins exemplified the mission of HBCU athletics by fostering a family-first culture and focusing on player development on and off the court. His success at TSU helped elevate the Ohio Valley Conference’s only HBCU basketball program, positioning it as credible talent pipelines not only for athletes but for coaches as well.

“Coach Collins built a family-oriented culture and a competitive program that earned the respect of our conference and the broader basketball community,” said TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen. “We are proud to congratulate Coach Collins on this significant opportunity.”

With Collins now in the NBA, Assistant Coach Erik Buggs will serve as interim head coach. Buggs arrived at TSU last season after a strong run at UT Martin, where he helped lead the Skyhawks to a 24-win season and a regular-season OVC title in 2022-23.

While the move to the NBA is a big one for Collins, Tennessee State will have to make a decision as to whether it will keep the interim tag on Buggs for the year or make a new hire.

But it's only a drop in the bucket compared to what it owes.

Tennessee State University (TSU), a proud public Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has reached an agreement with the State of Tennessee to reallocate $96 million over the next three years for operational support. The funds were originally designated for deferred maintenance but will now strengthen day-to-day university operations.

Part of $250 million commitment to the HBCU

In April 2022, the State of Tennessee allocated $250 million to TSU for infrastructure and capital projects. So far, $99 million has gone toward deferred maintenance. With this agreement, $96 million will now address operational priorities. The remaining $55 million will fund capital upgrades, including $33 million for campus electrical systems and $22 million for new buildings for Food and Animal & Environmental Science programs in the College of Agriculture.

State Officials Endorse the Agreement

Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration Commissioner Jim Bryson called the agreement “an opportunity to solve [TSU’s] financial challenges and regain its legacy as one of our nation’s great, historic institutions of higher education.”

Comptroller Jason Mumpower added, “Investing in education is investing in Tennessee’s future.” He emphasized the state’s ongoing commitment to TSU and said, “I signed this agreement because I have confidence in TSU’s current leadership team and their ability to understand and navigate the institution’s challenges.”

Tennessee State

TSU Leadership Focused on Long-Term Impact

Interim President Dwayne Tucker described the agreement as a “transformational opportunity.” He said it “provides crucial cash flow to ensure the university’s financial sustainability” and allows TSU to “invest in enriching the student experience and strengthening our capacity to attract both students and qualified employees.”

Board of Trustees Chair Dakasha Winton stated, “The support from the State to reallocate these funds underscores our commitment to providing a top-tier education and the necessary resources to cultivate global leaders.”

HBCU one of many chronically underfunded

TSU is Tennessee’s only public land-grant HBCU, created under the 1890 Morrill Act to serve Black students. Federal law requires states to match federal funds to HBCUs, but Tennessee has fallen short. A 2007 state study found TSU was underfunded by $544 million between 1957 and 2007. A federal review in 2023 expanded that figure, estimating a $2.1 billion shortfall from 1987 to 2020.

While it doesn’t address the long-term shortfall, this funding reallocation marks a significant step toward addressing that gap for the HBCU.

Shannon Harris, a former quarterback at Tennessee State University, made history Saturday night by becoming the first HBCU graduate to coach a team to a professional sports championship. Harris led the DC Defenders to a record-breaking 58-34 victory over the Michigan Panthers in the 2025 UFL Championship Game.

The Defenders exploded with a 31-6 run in the second quarter, setting the tone for their dominant finish. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was named UFL Championship Game MVP, throwing for a record-setting 390 yards on 21-of-28 passing and four touchdowns. Jaydon Mickens caught six passes for 132 yards, fueling the aerial assault.

Michigan came out strong, scoring on its first two drives to seize a 13-6 lead. DC answered with 25 unanswered points, including a 22-yard field goal and touchdown drives capped by Cornell Powell’s 19-yard grab and Ta’amu’s quarterback sneak on fourth-and-goal. A two-point conversion extended the lead to 23-13. Shortly before halftime, Deon Jackson broke free for a 5-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the advantage to 31-13.

Huge offensive plays set the tone

Although Michigan’s Bryce Perkins connected with Malik Turner for a 71-yard touchdown late in the half, Ta’amu struck again with a 73-yard pass to Ty Scott, giving DC a comfortable 37-19 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, DC secured its lead when Jackson scored from 17 yards out following an interception. Briley Moore added a touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 52-19. Michigan rallied with three consecutive possessions and the benefit of UFL’s 4th-and-12 rule, narrowing the gap to 52-34 before DC’s defense sealed the win with a final touchdown.

The 58 points were the most ever scored in UFL history and signaled a new era for spring football—and for coaches emerging from HBCU programs. Players from Virginia State as well as star receiver Chris Rowland, also from Tennessee State, are also a part of the HBCU legacy of this championship team.

The United Football League has named former HBCU quarterback Shannon Harris, now head coach of the DC Defenders, as the 2025 UFL Buddy Teevens Coach of the Year. As a former quarterback at Tennessee State, Harris made his mark in 2001. That year, he set a school record for total offense in a season with 3,137 yards.

Harris Took Over in March

Harris became interim head coach of the Defenders on March 23. He replaced Reggie Barlow, who left to coach at Tennessee State University.

Under Harris, the Defenders posted a 6-4 regular-season record. They earned a spot in the XFL Conference Championship Game, then beat the St. Louis Battlehawks 36-18 to advance to the UFL Championship Game.

Strong Start to the Season

DC opened the season with an 18-11 win over the defending champions, the Birmingham Stallions. In that game, the team recorded a franchise-high eight sacks.

The Defenders went 4-1 in their first five games. Notable victories included wins over:

 • Memphis Showboats (17-12)
 • St. Louis Battlehawks (27-15)
 • Arlington Renegades (37-33)

They clinched a playoff spot in Week 8 with a 33-30 win over Arlington at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

HBCU standout Chris Rowland shows versatility

Former HBCU standout Chris Rowland was named to the 2025 All-UFL Team as a wide receiver and return specialist for the DC Defenders. It’s a well-deserved honor for one of the most electrifying players in spring football this season. Rowland also played collegiately at Tennessee State.

Rowland made his presence felt all year long, consistently flipping field position and creating big plays for the Defenders. As a return specialist, he was a top ten performer in both punt return yardage and kickoff returns. Rowland averaged 21.9 yards on kickoff returns and 10.9 yards for punt returns.

But Rowland wasn’t just dangerous on special teams—he also proved to be a reliable target on offense. As a wide receiver, he’s rated as the second-best pass catcher in the league with 42 receptions for 522 yards and 3 touchdowns in the regular season. His ability to get open in space and make defenders miss added another dynamic layer to the Defenders’ offensive attack.

Jordan Ta’amu Shines

Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu had a standout season. He is a finalist for the 2025 UFL MVP award.

Ta’amu led the UFL in:

 • Passing yards (2,294)
 • Passing touchdowns (17)

He ranked 2nd in total yards (2,333) while playing nine out of ten games. Under his lead, DC finished No. 1 in total offense with 3,454 yards.

DC’s Dominant Defense

DC also stood out on defense. The team ranked among the best in the UFL in several key categories:

 • 1st in tackles for loss (59)
 • Tied 1st in takeaways (17)
 • Tied 2nd in forced fumbles (9)
 • 3rd in sacks (22)
 • Tied 3rd in interceptions (7)

What’s Next

The 2025 UFL season wraps up with the Championship Game on Saturday, June 14, at 8 p.m. ET. The game takes place at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis and will air live on ABC. A win by the Defenders would make Harris the first coach who graduated from an HBCU to win a sports championship at the professional level.

The DC Defenders are heading to the UFL Championship this weekend. Their path to the title game is a powerful story with a layered HBCU storyline. After a 36–18 win over the St. Louis Battlehawks, the Defenders will face the Michigan Panthers for the league title.

Coach Shannon Harris Leads a Historic Moment

Head Coach Shannon Harris is a proud alumnus of Tennessee State University. He took over from Reggie Barlow, an Alabama State alum, who is now the head coach at Tennessee State. Harris is on the brink of history. No HBCU graduate has ever led a professional football team to a league championship as head coach.

As a former quarterback at Tennessee State, Harris made his mark in 2001. That year, he set a school record for total offense in a season with 3,137 yards.

A Quote That Says It All

After the semifinal win, Harris gave credit to those who came before him:
“We owe a lot to Coach Barlow,” Harris said.
“The foundation… been laid from year one, from 2023, and we just followed suit. It came down to us, we and ours… I’m so happy for these guys and the coaching staff that stayed together.”

HBCU Talent Shines on the Field

The roster also features top HBCU talent. Wide receiver Chris Rowland, another Tennessee State alum, was named to the All-UFL First Team this season. Virginia State University is represented by Willie Drew, a former CIAA Defensive Player of the Year, and running back Darius Hagans.

Together, they’re not just chasing a title. They are showcasing the power and promise of HBCU football on a national stage.

Former ACC quarterback Jack Brandon is headed to the HBCU ranks. The 6-foot-3, 209-pound passer spent the last four seasons at Boston College. He has now committed to Tennessee State University as the Tigers begin a new era under head coach Reggie Barlow. Brandon brings Power Five experience to an HBCU program fresh off a 9-4 season and a share of the OVC/Big South championship.

Brandon never saw game action during his ACC career. Still, he showed promise at Cheshire Academy, where he threw for over 3,000 yards and 36 touchdowns. He also played basketball and baseball, showing his all-around athleticism. His move from the ACC to an HBCU highlights the talent shift happening across college football.

Tennessee State is undergoing big changes. Former head coach Eddie George led the Tigers to the FCS playoffs before leaving for Bowling Green. Reggie Barlow now takes over after a strong run with Alabama State and the XFL’s DC Defenders. Brandon gives the staff a quarterback with size, arm talent, and leadership.

The addition of an ACC quarterback helps boost Tennessee State’s HBCU resurgence. It also signals that HBCU football is attracting talent from top conferences. Brandon’s presence could help stabilize the offense during the coaching transition.

Tennessee State has an unknown outlook heading into 2025. As the team adjusts to a new system, Brandon will have the chance to lead the way. His move from the ACC to an HBCU is one many players are making these days, including a player for Tennessee State’s first opponent.

Fans and scouts will watch closely to see how he performs. Brandon’s development could be key to another strong run in the OVC/Big South.

Chris Rowland continues to make his HBCU proud. The former Tennessee State standout has been named to the 2025 All-UFL Team as a wide receiver and return specialist for the DC Defenders. It’s a well-deserved honor for one of the most electrifying players in spring football this season.

Rowland’s performance this season is another reminder of the high-level talent that comes out of HBCU programs. A former All-American at Tennessee State, he’s now showing the professional football world what HBCU fans have known for years—Chris Rowland is the real deal.

His selection to the All-UFL Team not only validates his work ethic and production but also raises his profile for potential NFL interest in the future.

But his work isn’t done yet, Rowland will lead the Defenders into a road game for the XFL Conference championship game on June 8 versus the St. Louis Battlehawks. The winner of that game will face the USFL Conference champions for the UFL championship on June 14.

Oigen Ayo, a 6-foot-9 forward from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is on the move from one HBCU to another, making the jump from Division II Kentucky State to Division I Tennessee State. The transfer marks a significant transition for Ayo, who will take his versatile skillset from the SIAC to the OVC as he continues his HBCU basketball journey.

Ayo had a productive two-year run at Kentucky State, starting nearly every game for the Thorobreds. During the 2024–25 season, he averaged 13.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field. His standout performances included a 26-point game at Morehouse and a 16-rebound showing against Lane. The big man showed improvement in nearly every statistical category, especially on the defensive end, where he racked up 31 blocks and 15 steals on the season.

Tennessee State

His move to Tennessee State will give the Tigers a much-needed boost in frontcourt depth and experience. Ayo is expected to stretch the floor with his improved three-point shooting (over 30% on the season) while maintaining a strong inside presence. Tennessee State, a rising HBCU program in the Ohio Valley Conference, is positioning itself for a breakthrough campaign, and the addition of a proven HBCU talent like Ayo aligns with its competitive goals.

Ayo’s transfer also highlights a growing trend of inter-HBCU movement, as players increasingly seek out opportunities to compete at the highest possible level while remaining within the HBCU ecosystem. For Tennessee State, landing a player with Ayo’s size, skill, and HBCU experience could be a key piece in its pursuit of postseason play.

With two strong years already behind him, Ayo now looks to make an immediate impact at the Division I level.

Former Southern University running back Kendric Rhymes announced recently on social media that he will start the next chapter of his HBCU football career at Tennessee State.

“LAST RIDE ?,” Rhymes tweeted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Rhymes decided to commit to Tennessee State after he entered the transfer portal on March 19. He shared a heartfelt note to Jaguar Nation about his plans to spend his additional year of HBCU football eligibility with the Tigers.

“Thank you Jag nation for your unwavering support. To my coaches, teammates and fans—Southern will always have a special place in my heart,” Rhymes wrote in the letter.

Jag to Tiger

Rhymes chose Tennessee State over offers from Texas Southern, University of Texas El Paso, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Towson. The Houston native joins a Tigers’ program under first-year head coach Reggie Barlow, who replaced former head coach Eddie George. In 2024, TSU won the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference co-championship, marking the Tigers’ first conference title since 1999.

“Unbelievable! The chance to be at Tennessee State University, with its rich history, tradition, and legacy of amazing players and coaches – it’s truly an honor to follow in their footsteps,” said Barlow when hired in March.

In three seasons at SU, Rhymes rushed for 1,625 yards on 331 carries, registered 21 touchdowns, and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. In that span, he also caught 57 passes for 468 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 8.2 yards per catch.

Statistically, the 2024 campaign marked Rhymes’s best outing. In that season, he rushed for career highs in yards (702), rushing attempts (158), rushing touchdowns (8), receiving yards (212), and average yards per catch (11.2). Southern used Kendric Rhymes in the backfield as part of a tandem with running back Kobe Dillon, who led the Jaguars in rushing yards (801) last season.

Rhymes and Dillon played an integral part in helping the Jaguars win the SWAC West and appear in the 2025 SWAC championship game against Jackson State.

HBCU basketball and NBA are mourning the loss of one of its true legends. Dr. Dick Barnett, an icon both at Tennessee State University and in the NBA, has passed away at the age of 88.

Before he became a New York Knicks star and a two-time NBA champion, Dick Barnett built his legacy at Tennessee State, then known as Tennessee A&I. Under legendary coach John McLendon, Barnett helped guide Tennessee A&I to three consecutive NAIA national championships from 1957 to 1959 — the first time a historically Black college or university (HBCU) captured a national title in any collegiate sport. His signature “fall-back baby” jump shot became a hallmark move in college basketball, and his electrifying play helped put Tennessee State on the national map.

https://hbcugameday.com/2024/10/14/nba-champion-hbcu-legend-enshrined-in-hall-of-fame/Barnett’s accomplishments at Tennessee State were groundbreaking. He was a three-time All-American and left the program as its all-time leading scorer. His dominance on the court and leadership off of it reflected the resilience, excellence, and pride of HBCU athletics during a time when Black athletes had few avenues to shine on the national stage.

After his collegiate success, Barnett went on to a storied professional career. He was selected fourth overall in the 1959 NBA Draft by the Syracuse Nationals, and he ultimately became a key figure in the New York Knicks’ championship teams of 1970 and 1973. Known for his fearless play and clutch shooting, Barnett embodied everything it meant to be a New York Knick, both on and off the court. As the Knicks noted, “He left a positive impact on everyone he encountered, and this organization is incredibly fortunate to have him be such an integral part of its history.”

Dick Barnett, NBA, Knicks

Barnett’s No. 12 jersey now hangs in the rafters of Madison Square Garden, but his impact stretched far beyond basketball. After retiring, he pursued higher education vigorously, earning a Ph.D. in education from Fordham University. Throughout his life, he championed the importance of education and civil rights, making it his mission to inspire future generations.

Tennessee State University expressed deep sadness at his passing, stating: “The TSU family mourns the loss of one of its greatest legends. Dr. Barnett not only brought national recognition to our university through his incredible basketball achievements but also continued to lift up TSU throughout his life as an ambassador and advocate.”

Barnett’s story is one of triumph against the odds, blazing trails for HBCU athletes who would follow in his footsteps. His legacy is forever etched not just in Tennessee State history, but in the broader story of American sports and social progress.

As HBCUs continue to nurture talent and build pride across generations, the contributions of giants like Dr. Dick Barnett serve as a foundation. His jersey will forever hang in the rafters, and his story will forever inspire.

HBCU Gameday extends our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, former teammates, and the entire Tennessee State and New York Knicks communities.

Rest in Power, Dr. Barnett.

The world of HBCU football witnessed a unique father-son narrative when Hall of Famer Eddie George took the reins as head coach at Tennessee State University in 2021. Shortly after, his son, Eriq George, a talented defensive lineman, committed to play for his father at TSU, marking a special chapter in both of their careers. Now, Eriq is set to continue that journey by joining his father at Bowling Green State University, following Eddie’s recent move from an FCS-HBCU to the FBS-level program.

Eddie George, best known for his Heisman-winning career at Ohio State and a standout NFL tenure with the Tennessee Titans, stepped into the coaching spotlight at Tennessee State with the intention of using his football gravitas to uplift HBCU football. His decision to lead the Tennessee State football program brought renewed national attention and inspired many high-profile athletes to consider Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Immediate Impact

In 2023, Eriq George began his collegiate football career at Tennessee State under his father’s leadership. A three-star recruit out of Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Eriq made an immediate impact. In his freshman season, he tallied 25 total tackles, including 6 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, earning Defensive Freshman of the Year honors in the Big South-OVC.

During the 2024 season, Tennessee State finished with an impressive 9–3 record, their best under Eddie George’s leadership. The program showed remarkable progress in just a few short years, with Eddie earning praise for reinvigorating TSU’s competitive edge and bringing national media attention back to HBCU football in Nashville, TN. Eddie George earned the Big South-OVC Coach of the Year award and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award.

Eriq George emerged as a defensive cornerstone for the Tigers in 2024. He recorded 57 total tackles, including 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble, earning All-OVC Second Team honors. His explosive play and high football IQ made him one of the most exciting young defenders in HBCU football and a natural fit for the next level.

Following the 2024 season, Eddie George made the somewhat surprising move to become the new head coach at Bowling Green State University, stepping into FBS football for the first time as a head coach. Eriq soon entered the transfer portal and announced on April 22 via his X.com (formerly Twitter) account that he would be joining his father at Bowling Green, continuing their unique father-son football bond.

Now reunited at Bowling Green, the Georges continue to make history, shifting from the HBCU stage to the FBS level, while carrying forward the legacy and lessons of their time at Tennessee State. Their journey highlights the growing prominence of HBCU football as a legitimate launchpad for both athletes and coaches.

Karate Brenson, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound wide receiver from St. Louis, Missouri, has made a significant impact during his collegiate football career. After beginning at Ball State in 2021, where he played three games and caught two passes, Brenson transferred to Tennessee State University in 2022. Over three seasons with the Tigers, he amassed 130 receptions for 1,669 yards and nine touchdowns. His standout 2024 season included 79 catches for 1,088 yards and six touchdowns, earning him an 88.4 grade from Pro Football Focus. ?

Brenson’s performance attracted attention from multiple FBS programs. Following the departure of TSU head coach Eddie George to Bowling Green, Brenson entered the transfer portal in March 2025. He received offers from schools including Oklahoma State, Bowling Green, and Purdue. Ultimately, Brenson transferred to Wake Forest, where he is expected to contribute significantly to the Demon Deacons’ offense in the upcoming season.

Two former HBCU receivers, Reginald Vick Jr. and Sterling Berkhalter, committed to Wake Forest out of the ACC in January.

Brenson can contribute to struggling Wake Forest offense

Wake Forest football endured a challenging 2024 season, finishing with a 4–8 overall record and 1–7 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons struggled offensively, ranking near the bottom of the conference in total yards and points scored. Quarterback play was inconsistent following the departure of Sam Hartman, and the offensive line allowed a high number of sacks. Despite the setbacks, the defense showed flashes of resilience, particularly in close contests against Virginia and Pitt.

Barlow has evolving roster at TSU

Reggie Barlow has built a respected football coaching career following his success as an NFL wide receiver. After beginning his coaching journey at his alma mater, Alabama State, Barlow served as head coach from 2007 to 2014, leading the Hornets to multiple winning seasons and a SWAC Championship appearance. He later coached at Virginia State University, compiling a strong 34–16 record over five seasons. In 2022, Barlow made history as the first head coach of the XFL’s D.C. Defenders, guiding the team to the league championship game in 2023. Known for discipline and player development, Barlow is prepared for his next opportunity at Tennessee State University.

NASHVILLE — Tennessee State University football head coach Reggie Barlow announced Friday the addition of veteran HBCU football coach Cedric Thornton to the Tigers’ staff. Thornton will serve as associate head coach and linebackers coach for the 2025 season.

Thornton brings more than two decades of coaching experience to Tennessee State University, including recent roles as defensive tackles coach and special teams coordinator at Alabama A&M, and defensive coordinator at both Grambling State and Alcorn State. He helped build some of the most productive HBCU defenses in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Veteran Leader

Thornton spent two seasons at Grambling State under former TSU offensive coordinator and head coach Hue Jackson, mentoring standout defensive end Sundiata Anderson, who earned numerous SWAC and national honors. He also coached freshman defensive lineman Keyshawn Johnson, a 2023 Stats Perform FCS Freshman All-American.

Before his time at Grambling, Thornton played a pivotal role at Alcorn State, helping lead the Braves to two SWAC championships and a pair of Celebration Bowl appearances. Promoted to assistant head coach in 2019, Thornton oversaw a defense that ranked among the FCS leaders in multiple categories, including interceptions (21), turnovers gained (36), fumbles recovered (15), and red zone defense (.689).

In 2018, Alcorn led the nation in sacks (4.0 per game) and tackles for loss (9.5 per game), while finishing in the top 10 nationally in rushing defense, total defense, and red zone efficiency. He also developed multiple all-conference and All-America players, including linebacker Solomon Muhammad and defensive back Qwynnterrio Cole.

HBCU Tennessee State University

Thornton previously served as defensive coordinator at Alabama State, where his 2014 unit ranked among the top 15 nationally in scoring defense, passing defense, and total takeaways. That season, the Hornets held seven opponents under 20 points, including a shutout of Savannah State — the program’s first official shutout since 1994.

His coaching career also includes stops at Texas Southern and in the high school ranks in Montgomery, Ala., and Jacksonville, Fla.

As a player, Thornton enjoyed an eight-year NFL career as a defensive lineman, beginning with the Philadelphia Eagles (2011–15), followed by stints with the Dallas Cowboys (2016) and Buffalo Bills (2017).

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Thornton played HBCU football at Alabama State from 1991 to 1995.

A pair of offensive linemen have decided to make Jackson State football their home after a stint at Tennessee State. Alex Valbuena and Ace Meadows both announced on social media on Monday that they were committing to JSU.

Alex Valbuena, a 6-foot, 275-pound offensive lineman from Antioch, Tennessee, has been a dedicated member of the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers football team. After redshirting his freshman year in 2022, Valbuena played as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and continued as a redshirt sophomore in 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has worn jersey number 51 and primarily played the guard position. Notably, Valbuena started in the game against Southeast Missouri State on November 23, 2024. Prior to his collegiate career, he attended Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, where he earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors.

300 pound plus commitment for Jackson State

Ace Meadows, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound offensive lineman from Trenton, Tennessee, began his football journey at Peabody High School. There, he distinguished himself as a top offensive lineman recruit, earning recognition on the All-West Tennessee high school football team in 2023. In December 2023, Meadows committed to TSU, influenced by the leadership of head coach Eddie George, whom he described as “one of the most humble men I’ve ever met.” Meadows entered TSU as a freshman in 2024.

In the 2024 season, the Tennessee State Tigers’ offense demonstrated a balanced approach, averaging 190.0 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game, culminating in an average of 355.5 total yards per game. The team scored 28 touchdowns—17 rushing and 10 passing—contributing to a total of 220 points for the season.

Eddie George left Tennessee State at the end of the 2024 season to take the head coaching job at Bowling Green. Jackson State won the 2024 HBCU National Championship with a victory over South Carolina State.

One of the bright spots for HBCU Tennessee State’s resurgence has found a new home at a Big Ten program.

Sanders Ellis, a talented linebacker, has committed to Purdue. He posted a photo with his commitment to the Big Ten program Monday.

The Nashville native, emerged as a defensive force in his freshman year at Tennessee State University. He registered 86 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss (including 2.5 sacks), while also recovering three fumbles and breaking up two passes. He was also a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the top freshman in FCS football.

Ellis hit the portal last month following the departure of Eddie George as the head coach at the HBCU for a job at Bowling Green. He was one of several players to leave the program following his departure, including George’s son Eriq.

Sanders Ellis, HBCU Tennessee State

Eddie George, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL standout, served as TSU’s head coach for four seasons. Under his leadership, the HBCU clinched a share of the OVC-Big South Conference championship in 2024 and made an appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. George’s contributions were acknowledged as he was named the Big South-Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year and was the runner-up for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.

George’s decision to transition to Bowling Green was influenced by multiple factors, including financial challenges at Tennessee State University and his aspirations for long-term coaching at a higher level. He expressed mixed emotions about leaving the HBCU community, acknowledging the systemic underfunding at TSU and other public, land-grant HBCUs.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

While George is headed to the G5 school, his former star will be taking his talents to the Big Ten.

In a major move for HBCU football, former NFL head coach and Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will join Tennessee State University (TSU) as the team’s new defensive coordinator. New head coach Reggie Barlow confirmed the news in an interview with Kyle Mosley of HBCU Legends. Highlighting Williams’s extensive experience and deep football acumen as key assets for the Tigers.

A Coaching Veteran with Championship Pedigree

Gregg Williams brings decades of NFL experience to Tennessee State, having served as a defensive coordinator and head coach at multiple NFL franchises. Most notably, he was the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints when they secured victory in Super Bowl XLIV. His coaching resume also includes stints with the Buffalo Bills (head coach, 2001-2003), Washington, the Tennessee Titans, and the Cleveland Browns.

Williams’ aggressive defensive schemes have long been recognized for their effectiveness. He previously worked in Nashville as the Titans’ defensive coordinator, making this return to the city a homecoming of sorts. “Gregg Williams, who’s an all-time NFL coach and defensive coordinator, has done a great job wherever he’s gone,” said Barlow. “He was a defensive coordinator here in Nashville for the Tennessee Titans, and we play in that same stadium. And he’s coming.”

Barlow and Williams have a well-established professional relationship, having worked together during the 2023 XFL season with the D.C. Defenders. Barlow was the head coach, and Williams served as the defensive coordinator, helping the team reach the XFL Championship Game. Their collaboration was highly successful, making this reunion at Tennessee State an exciting prospect for the program.

“I think it’ll be good for our student-athletes just to be able to learn and hear from him,” Barlow told Mosley in an exclusive interview. “Greg is one of the smartest guys I’ve ever been around from a football standpoint. His intelligence, his knowledge, just the things that he knows about the game—we’ve learned a lot from him over the years. Coach is also a really good coordinator.”

Williams is expected to officially take over his role following the conclusion of the UFL season. Where he is currently coaching. “We just got to let them finish the product off that we built with this team [Defenders],” Barlow added. “So our guys are staying back [in Washington]. And then at the [UFL] championship, June 14, after they win that, they’ll be heading their way here to Tennessee State.”

A Bright Future for TSU Football

Tennessee State University is poised to continue elevating its HBCU football performance, with Williams now leading the defense. His experience and proven track record at collegiate and professional levels are invaluable to the Tigers’ program. Reggie Barlow replaces Eddie George as head coach, who departed for Bowling Green after leading the HBCU to one of its most successful seasons in recent history. Tennessee State will open its 2025 season at the John Merritt Classic against North Carolina A&T on August 30. It’s a game that will mark the beginning of an exciting new era for TSU under the leadership of Barlow and Williams.

NASHVILLE — Tennessee State University is proud to announce the appointment of Reggie Barlow as the 23rd head HBCU football coach in program history. A proven leader with extensive coaching experience and a championship pedigree. Barlow brings a wealth of knowledge and a history of success at both the professional and collegiate levels.

Barlow joins TSU after a standout tenure as head coach of the UFL’s D.C. Defenders, where he led the team to a league-best 9-1 record and a championship game appearance in 2023. His remarkable leadership earned him 2023 XFL Coach of the Year honors.

Under his guidance, the Defenders produced seven All-XFL players. Including Offensive Player of the Year Jordan Ta’amu, the most of any team in the league. His squad dominated on the ground, leading the league in rushing yards (1,490) and rushing touchdowns (18). While defensively ranking second in sacks (29) and first in pick-sixes (4).

Words from coach Barlow

“Unbelievable! The chance to be at Tennessee State University, with its rich history, tradition, and legacy of amazing players and coaches – it’s truly an honor to follow in their footstep,” said Barlow. “I’m humbled, blessed, and beyond excited! A huge thank you to Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen, President Tucker, and the student-athletes who have who’ve remained committed through uncertainty. And to Big Blue, I’m ready to get started! So, let me ask you…do you like football?”

Before his success with the Defenders. Barlow served as head coach at Division II HBCU Virginia State University for six seasons. He made history in 2017 leading the Trojans to their first unbeaten season in school history and winning the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship. His efforts earned him CIAA Coach of the Year honors.

Barlow began his collegiate coaching career at his HBCU alma mater, Alabama State University. As quarterback coach for two seasons and head coach for eight seasons. During his time at the helm, he led the Hornets to a 49-42 record and three SWAC East Division titles while developing standout quarterbacks like Super Bowl XLVII champion Tarvaris Jackson. His influence went beyond wins and losses, as his teams also excelled in the classroom, boasting an 80% graduation rate.

NFL playmaker

As a player, Barlow was a standout wide receiver and return specialist at Alabama State before being selected in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his NFL career, he played for the Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He led the league in punt return yards in 1998 and earned a Pro Bowl alternate selection. He capped his playing career by winning Super Bowl XXXVII with the Buccaneers in 2002.

“Reggie Barlow’s appointment as the head football coach of TSU is a testament to his dedication to the game of football and his deep-rooted passion for developing young athletes. With a rich legacy as a player and coach. Barlow is poised to lead the TSU football program to new heights, building a culture of excellence and success that will benefit both the players and the university for years to come,” said Allen.

Barlow inherits a TSU program on the rise and is eager to defend its share of the OVC-Big South Championship. The Tigers reached the NCAA FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2013 and claimed their first conference title since 1999. TSU will play eight home games in 2025. Beginning with the John Merritt Classic on August 30th against North Carolina A&T.

A press conference to introduce Coach Reggie Barlow will take place at Nissan Stadium on Monday, March 24, at 11 AM. Fans and media are encouraged to attend as he shares his vision for the program.

In response to circulating rumors about his potential appointment as head coach of Tennessee State University’s (TSU) HBCU football program, Jeff Fisher has firmly denied any such intentions. He stated, “Let’s clear this up right now; there was never interest by either party regarding the coaching vacancy at Tennessee State.” Fisher further emphasized his dedication to his current position: “I am 100 percent committed to my current job as commissioner of Arena Football.”

Jeff Fisher’s career in football

Jeff Fisher boasts a distinguished coaching career in the National Football League (NFL) over two decades. He began as an interim head coach for the Houston Oilers in 1994, a team that later became the Tennessee Titans. Fisher led the Titans to a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance in 1999, narrowly losing to the St. Louis Rams. He remained with the franchise until 2010, becoming the winningest coach in its history. In 2012, Fisher took the helm of the St. Louis Rams (later the Los Angeles Rams), coaching there until 2016. After a brief hiatus, he returned to coaching in 2022 with the Michigan Panthers of the United States Football League (USFL), now known as the American Football 1 (AF1) league, where he continues to contribute his expertise.

Where the rumor oiriginated

These rumors originated from a tweet by W. Keith Friedman, who identified himself on X.com (formerly Twitter) as a freelance journalist. However, investigations into Friedman’s credentials reveal a lack of verifiable journalistic work or affiliations, casting doubt on the legitimacy of his claims. This incident underscores the growing concern over misinformation spread by unverified sources on social media platforms.

Tennessee State University is actively seeking a successor to Eddie George, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green. Among the potential candidates is Reggie Barlow, the head coach of the D.C. Defenders in the United Football League, known for his extensive experience and success in HBCU football.

This episode reminds us of the importance of verifying information through credible sources, especially regarding prominent figures and their interactions with HBCU institutions. It highlights the necessity for due diligence and reliance on established news outlets when assessing the validity of such claims.

According to a recent report by FootballScoop.com, Reggie Barlow has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Eddie George as the head football coach at Tennessee State University (TSU). Barlow’s extensive experience as both an NFL player and an HBCU football coach. Coupled with his recent success in the XFL, positions him as a strong contender for the role.?

NFL Playing Career

Barlow’s professional football journey began when the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft. His NFL career spanned eight seasons, during which he played as a wide receiver and return specialist for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Over 82 career games, Barlow recorded 39 receptions for 522 yards and one touchdown. ?

Barlow’s most significant contributions came on special teams. He returned 80 kickoffs for 1,855 yards, averaging 23.2 yards per return, and scored one kickoff return touchdown. Additionally, he returned 158 punts for 1,639 yards, averaging 10.4 yards per return, and scored two punt return touchdowns.

In 1998, Barlow led the NFL in punt return yards, amassing 555 yards on 43 returns, and was named a Pro Bowl alternate. His performance that season remains among the top single-season punt return yardage totals in league history. ? Barlow’s tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers culminated in a Super Bowl XXXVII victory, earning him a championship ring.

In 2013, Barlow was inducted into the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Fame in recognition of his collegiate achievements.

Coaching Career and HBCU Contributions

Transitioning from player to coach, Barlow returned to his alma mater, Alabama State University, where he served as quarterbacks coach before being promoted to head coach from 2007 to 2014. He achieved a 49-42 record during his tenure, mentoring players like Super Bowl champion Tarvaris Jackson.

In 2016, Reggie Barlow took the helm at Virginia State University (VSU), another prominent HBCU football program. Under his leadership, the Trojans experienced significant success, notably an undefeated regular season in 2017—the first in the school’s history. This achievement led to a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship, and Barlow was honored as the CIAA Coach of the Year. Over six seasons, he compiled a commendable 34-16 overall record at VSU.

XFL Achievements

Barlow’s coaching prowess extended to the professional ranks when he accepted the head coach position with the DC Defenders of the XFL in 2022. In the 2023 season, he led the Defenders to a league-best 9-1 record. Earning recognition as the XFL Coach of the Year. His team excelled offensively, leading the league in rushing yards (1,490) and rushing touchdowns (18). Defensively, the Defenders were formidable, ranking second in sacks (29) and first in defensive touchdowns.

Potential Transition to Tennessee State University

Should Barlow assume the head coaching role at TSU, he would be succeeding another NFL luminary, Eddie George. George, a former Tennessee Titans running back and Heisman Trophy winner, brought significant attention to TSU during his tenure. Barlow’s appointment would continue the tradition of integrating high-profile NFL experience into the program. His deep roots in HBCU football and his professional playing and coaching experience make him a fitting choice to lead TSU’s football program into its next chapter.?

Reggie Barlow’s career trajectory showcases a consistent commitment to excellence on the field and from the sidelines. His potential move to Tennessee State University underscores the institution’s dedication to fostering a competitive and dynamic football program within the HBCU community beyond Eddie George’s tenure.

Former Tennessee State defensive coordinator Brandon Fisher is following Eddie George to Bowling Green to serve as the Falcons defensive coordinator. The news of Fisher departing the Nashville-based HBCU was first reported by FCS Football Central’s Zach McKinnell. Fisher, the son of former NFL’s Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams coach Jeff Fisher, served as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator for four seasons under George’s leadership.

Fisher released a statement on X — formerly known as Twitter — confirming that he was joining George’s staff.

“Big Blue. 4 years went by fast. It was truly an honor. To the players – only we know what happened inside the walls of our locker room. Your endurance and perseverance was unmatched in college football – and you walked away champions. Thank you for always being THE STANDARD!,” Fisher wrote in the message.

Defense played a critical role in Tennessee State’s improvement on the gridiron as the HBCU increased its win totals each season in the four-year span. In the 2024 campaign, TSU finished 9-4, secured a portion of the Big South/Ohio Valley Conference championship, and earned a spot in the FCS playoffs for the first time since 2013.

Even more, TSU finished the 2024 season fourth in the Big South-OVC in scoring defense, allowing 24.2 points per game. The Tigers also ranked third in total defense (337.5 yards allowed per game) while leading the league in passing yards allowed (189.5) per contest.

Fisher played college football at Montana as a linebacker. He later transitioned into coaching with the elder Fisher, serving in roles with the Titans and Rams. After acquiring some NFL coaching experience, he later coached at Southern Utah and Auburn.

Bowling Green hired George on March 9. George led the Tigers to a 24-22 record in four seasons and the program’s first Big South-OVC title since 1999.

Now, Fisher joins Eddie George’s staff on a Bowling Green team that finished 7-6 last season, ranked fourth in total defense (333.3 yards) and scoring defense in the Mid-American Conference.

According to a report by On3sports, Tennessee State defensive lineman Eriq George, son of former Tennessee State head coach and Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, has decided to leave the Nashville, Tennessee, HBCU and enter the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s Collegiate Career at TSU

Standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 280 pounds, Eriq George emerged as a formidable presence in HBCU football over the past two years. In the 2024 season, George finished with 57 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble, leading the team with 12.5 tackles for loss and showcasing his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His performance earned him second-team All-Big South-OVC honors.

High School Recruitment and Commitment to TSU

Before his collegiate career, Eriq attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. His decision to commit to Tennessee State was influenced by the opportunity to play under the guidance of his father, Eddie George, who was appointed TSU’s head coach in April 2021.

Eddie George’s Transition to Bowling Green University

In March 2025, Eddie George accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), marking a return to Ohio, where he reached legendary status as a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at Ohio State. His tenure at Tennessee State ended with a 24-22 record over four seasons, including leading the Tigers to their first FCS playoff appearance since 2013.

Speculations on Eriq George’s Transfer to BGSU

Following his father’s move, speculation has naturally begun about Eriq’s potential transfer to BGSU to continue his football career under his father’s mentorship. A move that would not only reunite the father-son duo but likely bolster BGSU’s defensive line with proven talent. On March 19th, Eqiq posted on his x.com account that he had received an offer from Bowling Green. Adding a layer of validity to the speculation of the father-son reunion in Ohio.

BGSU’s Defensive Line Roster Movements

BGSU has been active in the transfer portal, enhancing its defensive front. Notably, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Marcus Moore, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 310 pounds, committed to the Falcons. BGSU has also secured commitments from defensive linemen KJ Brown and Ashton Yeager for the 2025 season. The program has experienced departures at the position as well. Including defensive lineman Bam Booker entering the transfer portal.

Eriq George’s exit from TSU and the possibility of reuniting with his father at BGSU present an intriguing storyline. Especially as he continues to develop into an NFL prospect. As the situation develops, the HBCU community and college football enthusiasts alike await official announcements regarding Eriq’s next steps.

As March Madness basketball games begin this week, several HBCU programs will compete in multiple postseason tournaments. However, this year’s brackets for the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) and the College Basketball Invitational (CBI.) will not include a single team from the Division I HBCU ranks.

This year marks the second consecutive year that the 87-year-old National Invitational Tournament will not include an HBCU program. The last team to compete in the annual contest was Alcorn State in 2023. That year, Alcorn State lost to North Texas 69-53 in the event’s first round.

HBCU in the NIT

In considering current teams competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, as well as Division I schools — Hampton, North Carolina A&T, and Tennessee State — in nontraditional HBCU conferences, there have only been seven times where the NIT has included an HBCU program in at least two or more consecutive seasons. There have only been four instances — 1993, 2007, 2008, and 2011 — where the selection committee has invited multiple HBCU programs in its nearly 90 years of existence.

Expect that to be the norm, though, as the MEAC and SWAC have lost NIT autobids along with other smaller conferences in recent years.

HBCU in the CBI

The first rendition of the CBI took place in 2008. The CBI committee selects 16 teams that are not awarded bids to the men’s NCAA tournament or the NIT and programs willing to pay a $27,500 entry fee to participate. This year marks the 12th instance — the tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 — in the 17-year-old competition that an HBCU will not compete in this year’s tournament field.

Bethune Cookman participated in the 2024 College Basketball Invitational competition, losing to Arkansas State 86-85 in the tournament’s first round. Since the event’s inception, only four programs have participated in the five total occurrences in the 16-team bracket. Those teams include Hampton (2014, 2017), Delaware State (2015), and Howard (2019), in addition to the Wildcats.

More postseason tournaments were created to provide extra opportunities for programs to showcase their prowess on the national stage. However, even with more opportunities, getting more HBCU programs eligible or in a position to receive an invitation to other postseason competitions will be a continuing process.

The landscape of HBCU football is shifting after Eddie George departed from Tennessee State University (TSU). Standout linebacker Sanders Ellis has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a social media post from Pete Nakos of On3sports. This development follows George’s exit from TSU after accepting the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University.

Sanders Ellis: A Rising Defensive Star

Sanders Ellis, a Nashville native, emerged as a defensive force in his freshman year at Tennessee State University. His 2024 season statistics are a testament to his defensive prowess:

 • Tackles: 86
 • Tackles for Loss: 15.5
 • Sacks: 2.5
 • Pass Deflections: 2
 • Fumbles Recovered: 3

These impressive numbers earned Ellis a finalist spot for the prestigious Jerry Rice Award, recognizing the top freshman at the FCS level.

Eddie George’s Departure and Its Impact

Eddie George, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL standout, served as TSU’s head coach for four seasons. Under his leadership, the Tigers clinched a share of the OVC-Big South Conference championship in 2024 and made an appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

Potential Reunion at Bowling Green

Ellis’s entry into the transfer portal opens up the possibility of reuniting with Coach George at Bowling Green. Such a move would bolster the Falcons’ defensive lineup and provide Ellis with continuity under a coach familiar with his capabilities. Since announcing his entry in the transfer portal, Ellis has announced two FBS offers from Purdue and Virginia Tech. Signaling that he may be moving onto opportunities outside of his relationship with Eddie George.

Eddie George’s and Sanders Ellis’s departure from TSU highlights the challenges and opportunities within HBCU football. As Ellis explores new avenues for his athletic career, the prospect of rejoining his former coach at Bowling Green remains a storyline to watch, reflecting the interconnected nature of coaching decisions and player movements in college football.

Eddie George, former Tennessee Titans running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has officially accepted the head coaching position at Bowling Green State University after a four-year tenure at Tennessee State University (TSU). George led the Tigers to a 9-4 record in 2024 and the first FCS playoff appearance for the HBCU since 2013.

In his official statement regarding the transition, George expressed mixed emotions about leaving TSU but emphasized his commitment to advancing his coaching career: “My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.” George told the Tennessean. He acknowledged the challenges faced during his tenure in HBCU football, noting that while he had hoped for improvements in certain areas, the current timeframe necessitated his decision to move forward.

“Not everything was great, and that’s ok,” said Eddie George to the Tennessean. “It allowed me to grow and be a part of my sport again and it really challenged me as a man through and through. My love for this school, this institution, extends beyond what you could ever imagine for affording me this opportunity.

“There is never a good time for retirement or making a transition, moving on to a new coaching position. I had to really weigh my options and look at what I was walking away from and where I was going toward. There’s a lot of reasons why I made this decision. My intentions were really to stay here at Tennessee State with hopes that things would definitely get better and so forth. And they will, eventually. But just not in this time frame. And I understand that.”

Eddie George at TSU

George’s departure from an HBCU program at the FCS level to an FBS school like Bowling Green of the Mid-American Conference underscores an evolving dynamic in the world of college football coaching. His journey reflects both the progress and the ongoing challenges facing coaches, specifically in HBCU football, looking to land leading roles across the various levels of college football. Highlighting the broader narrative of coaching mobility and the impact that a positive leadership transition can have on collegiate athletic programs.

“I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University,” said George about his move to Bowling Green. “Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves. I am overwhelmed with excitement and joy for the possibilities this opportunity holds. I’m also thrilled to be back in the great state of Ohio, where I played my college football. I look forward to meeting the team, the coaches, everyone in the athletics department, and everyone in the BGSU and Bowling Green community.”

The Eddie George era at Tennessee State University has come to an end after a four-year run by the former NFL running back. Multiple published reports have George leaving the HBCU coaching ranks to take over as the head coach of Bowling Green University.

George became the head coach of Tennessee State in April 2021, marking his first coaching role after a legendary playing career as an NFL running back and winning the Heisman Trophy while at Ohio State. Despite a lack of head coaching experience, the Nashville, Tennessee HBCU made George their primary target to fill the position. Tasked with revitalizing the TSU football program, George brought a professional mindset and a commitment to discipline and player development.

In his first season (2021), the Tigers finished with a 5-6 record, showing signs of improvement but struggling with consistency. The following year (2022), the team regressed to 4-7, facing challenges with depth and injuries. However, George remained focused on building a winning culture and increasing the program’s competitiveness in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).

The 2023 season marked a turning point, as TSU finished with an improved 6-5 record, demonstrating growth on both sides of the ball. George emphasized defense and physicality while working to enhance recruiting efforts, particularly through the transfer portal.

In the 2024 season, TSU achieved a 9–4 overall record and a 6–2 conference record, earning a share of the Big South–OVC Football Association championship. Tennessee State is the lone HBCU competing in the dual conference alignment.

This marked a significant milestone, as TSU secured a spot in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs for only the second time since 2000.

Despite their strong regular season performance, the Tigers faced the Montana Grizzlies in the first round of the FCS playoffs and were defeated 41–27, concluding their postseason run.

Throughout his tenure, Eddie George has aimed to raise the national profile of TSU football, leveraging his name recognition and connections to attract talent and resources. Now he will reportedly shift those resources and talents to Bowling Green.

Bowling Green has become one of the top coaching springboards this generation, with Urban Meyer, Dave Clawson and Dino Babers all advancing from the school to power conference jobs.

Bowling Green football has experienced ups and downs in recent years under former head coach Scot Loeffler, who left to join the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles. The Falcons have worked to rebuild their program, showing gradual improvement in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Progress in recent years for the FBS program included a 2022 bowl appearance— their first since 2015.

Bowling Green has become one of the top launching pads for coaches to move on to larger programs. Urban Meyer, Dave Clawson and Dino Babers have all left the school to take on power conference jobs. Now the former NFL great and rising coach will take his opportunity to further his career on the second stop of his coaching journey.

Tennessee State University head coach and NFL star Eddie George has reportedly been offered the head coaching position at Bowling Green University, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The former Heisman Trophy-winning running back has revitalized the HBCU program since taking over in 2021, leading the Tigers to their first conference championship since 1999 and their first FCS Playoff berth in over a decade.

George, a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award, guided Tennessee State to a 9-4 record this season, marking the program’s first nine-win campaign since 2013. Under his leadership, TSU was recognized twice as the Stats Perform HBCU Team of the Week and remained ranked in the national FCS Top 25 polls entering the postseason.

The former Tennessee Titans legend took the reins of the HBCU program despite having no prior coaching experience, signing a five-year contract worth $400,000 annually. His transition from the NFL to the sidelines was met with skepticism, but his ability to develop talent and instill a winning culture has changed the perception of the Tigers on the national stage.

After a 5-6 finish in his first season and a 4-7 mark in 2022, George’s team took a significant step forward in 2023. Competing in the newly formed Big South–OVC Football Association, Tennessee State finished 6-5 but struggled in conference play with a 2-4 record. However, in 2024, George’s squad dominated the competition, winning nine games while excelling on both sides of the ball.

Tennessee State’s defense ranked among the nation’s best, averaging 7.3 tackles-for-loss per game and forcing three defensive touchdowns. The Tigers boasted the conference’s top kickoff return unit (26.79 yards per return) and led in key defensive categories, including passing defense and turnover margin. Offensively, they scored 40 points in four different games and avoided consecutive losses all season.

If George accepts the Bowling Green job, he would become the latest former NFL player to leverage his success at an HBCU into an opportunity at the FBS level. His departure would be a significant loss for Tennessee State, but his tenure has left the program in a much stronger position than when he arrived.

NASHVILLE – Two HBCU football programs, Tennessee State University and Alabama A&M University, have agreed to a four-year football series beginning in 2025.

The “Legacy Series” is set to begin on Sept. 13, 2025, in Nashville. The teams will alternate hosting duties over the next three years, with matchups scheduled for Sept. 12, 2026, in Huntsville, Alabama, followed by a return to Nashville on Sept. 11, 2027, and concluding in Huntsville on Sept. 16, 2028.

The series is designed to honor the longstanding traditions and contributions of both institutions while celebrating the impact of HBCU football. It will highlight the athletic, academic, and cultural excellence of Tennessee State and Alabama A&M, two programs with deep histories in the sport.

Tennessee State and Alabama A&M have met 29 times since their first matchup in 1930, with TSU holding a 21-8 advantage. The teams last faced off in 2010, when TSU secured a 27-14 victory. While the opening game of the series will not be part of the John Merritt Classic, Alabama A&M holds a 4-3 edge in JMC meetings between the programs.

Games between the two schools have drawn significant fan interest, including TSU’s fifth-largest home crowd of 25,342 in 2005. Other notable matchups have attracted attendance figures of 25,117, 23,871, 23,440, and 22,607.

Both teams enter the series following competitive 2024 seasons. Alabama A&M finished 6-6, earning wins over common opponents Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. Tennessee State, under fourth-year head coach Eddie George, posted a 9-4 record, shared the OVC regular-season title, and earned an FCS Playoff berth. George was recognized as OVC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.

“We’re excited to launch the ‘Legacy Series,’ a celebration of the rich history and excellence of Tennessee State University and Alabama A&M,” said TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen. “This series honors the cultural and athletic legacies that continue to inspire our HBCU community.”

Additional details regarding ticket sales and broadcast information for the 2025 game will be announced at a later date.

Tennessee State University is officially pulling out of what was once of the marque HBCU football classics.

Dwayne Tucker, Interim TSU president, said that the offer from the Southern Heritage Classic was not enough to participate in the Memphis-based game that it had been a part of since its inception in 1990.

“I think most people understand that TSU has some financial issues,” Tucker told Action News 5, “that we need to walk and correct ourselves, so to play an event where it’s financially not in our best interest; the fee that’s being proposed—it’s just not a good financial return for Tennessee State. But we’d love to come back.”

The founder and promoter of the Southern Heritage Classic, Fred Jones, revealed to Action News 5 that he had offered $400k for the Nashville, TN-based HBCU to play and bring its marching band “The Aristocrat of Bands,” for the next five years. Jones said he never received a response back from Tennessee State University.

Tennessee State and Jackson State were the primary competitors in the Southern Heritage Classic for most of itst existence.

TSU’s withdrawal comes roughly three years after its other long time affiliate, Jackson State University, attempted to do the same thing based on finances. JSU announced it intended to opt out of the HBCU showcase game in 2022, but eventually relented after being sued by organizers. The two sides eventually agreed on a $800k settlement last summer.

Tennessee State has played Arkansas Pine-Bluff, another SWAC HBCU, over the last two seasons in the game.

Eddie George recently had the chance to interview with the Chicago Bears of the NFL. And even though he didn’t get the job, the current head football coach at Tennessee State speaks positively of his experience.

“The thing about the Rooney Rule is, it doesn’t matter how you get in the room,” George told the Tennessean. “Whether it’s through the front door, backdoor, side door, window or the roof ? if I get in the room, you still gotta deal with me. Then I’ve got to go out there and perform, meaning I’ve still got to interview well.”

The interview wasn’t the Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL All-Pro’s first interaction with the Chicago Bears. He previously interned with the franchise as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, giving him a chance to spend time with the franchise’s coaching staff.

“I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to interview (for the head coaching position) had I not had a previous relationship and the respect for it,” George said. “They we’re really pushing for me to come up even when I said, ‘Give me 48 hours to think about it.’ I thought they may say they didn’t have that much time, but they didn’t.”

Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was eventually hired for the Chicago Bears job. Eddie George meanwhile will return back to Tennessee State following a 9-4 season, share of the OVC/Big South title and an FCS playoffs appearance.

Travis Scott debuted his new single “4×4” on Monday, performing it live at the College Football National Championship game. On Friday he dropped the music video to the song which prominently features the Prairie View A&M marching band. The song itself however contains a sample from an entirely different HBCU marching band. According to whosampled.com, the band melody that appears at the beginning and throughout the song is a sample from the Aristocrat of Bands at Tennessee State University.

The sample was reportedly taken from a 2016 performance from the AOB performing “Say Sum” by Migos. The video of the performance that was referenced was posted to YouTube on Sept. 11, 2016 by HBCUbands.com, a day after the Southern Heritage Classic. The SHC is traditionally one of the premiere HBCU football classics. It would appear that the performance was part of the ‘fifth quarter’ showdown between Jackson State and Tennessee State after the game.

Several users flocked to the comments section to discuss the performance being sampled in the song, which can be heard at the 1:17 mark of the performance.

A Fever Dream with HBCU flavor

In the music video, released on Friday, Scott uses “The Marching Storm” from Prairie View A&M. Scott grew up in Houston which is 52 miles away from the city of Prairie View.

“You might want to head on over to TravisScott.com right now and check this out! You may see somebody you know…. #4×4,” the band posted on its official Instagram account.

The video, directed by Gabriel Moses, is best described as a fever dream of visuals featuring Travis Scott. In addition to performing his lyrics in front of the HBCU band from the SWAC, Scott appears in a rodeo, as a professional wrestler, and in an OJ Simpson-style police chase. The video ends with a monkey listening to the music with headphones on as if the entire video was the primate’s thoughts.

The song debuted at No. 4 on the US Spotify Chart with 1,495,236 American streams on Friday, January 24.

The Chicago Bears are looking for a head coach, and former NFL great/current HBCU head coach Eddie George is getting a look.

George is interviewing for the Chicago Bears opening, according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports.

The former Heisman Trophy winner and perennial Pro Bowl running back was named head coach of HBCU Tennessee State University on April 13, 2021, signing a five-year deal worth $400,000 annually. A former NFL star with no prior coaching experience, George brought his leadership and football acumen to a program seeking rejuvenation.

In his debut season, Tennessee State finished 5–6 overall and tied for 4th in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC). The following year, the team struggled, posting a 4–7 record and finishing tied for 3rd in conference play. In 2023, Tennessee State joined the newly formed Big South–OVC Football Association, where George guided the Tigers to a 6–5 season but only a 2–4 conference record, placing 6th.

The 2024 season marked George’s breakthrough as a head coach. Under his leadership, Tennessee State achieved a 9–4 record, finishing 6–2 in conference play and claiming a share of the Big South–OVC title, the first conference title of any sort for the 2024. The Tigers earned a spot in the NCAA Division I playoffs but fell in the first round. George’s success earned him the Big South–OVC Coach of the Year award, solidifying his progress with the program.

George’s overall coaching record at Tennessee State stands at 24–22, including a 13–12 mark in conference play, reflecting steady growth during his tenure.

Now he’ll get a chance to interview for the head coaching position with the Chicago Bears, one of the NFL’s most historic franchises. Not bad for a guy who wasn’t even interested in coaching four years ago.
