Southern University’s coaching carousel has become an expensive habit for the HBCU. Firing Terrence Graves when it did could cost the HBCU program nearly double what patience might have saved.

When Southern fired Eric Dooley in November 2023, it agreed to a $460,000 settlement, spread over three annual payments of $153,333.33 each — in 2024, 2025, and 2026 — along with continued salary and benefits through the end of 2023. That deal remains active, meaning the university will make its final installment in January 2026.

Less than two years later, on October 20, 2025, Southern dismissed Terrence Graves midway through his second season as head coach. His contract, which runs through December 31, 2026, pays $250,000 annually and includes a liquidated damages clause that guarantees the full remaining value of the contract if he’s fired “without cause” during the first two years.

Eric Dooley
Eric Dooley still has another payday coming from Southern University. (Steven J. Gaither/HBCU Gameday)

That means Southern is on the hook for Graves’ salary for the rest of 2025 and 2026 —pro rated at $250k per year — unless the board classifies the firing for cause or offsets the total with his next job.

The timing matters. Had the university waited until 2026, the buyout would have dropped to $75,000 total under the contract’s third-year clause. Instead, Southern is now facing a payout that could be nearly seven times higher.

Between Dooley’s $460,000 settlement and Graves’ estimated $500,000 buyout, Southern University will have paid close to $1 million in coaching severance since 2023 — all before hiring its next permanent leader.

For one of the proudest brands in HBCU football, it’s a costly reminder that change at the top can come with a heavy bill — and that timing those decisions can make all the financial difference.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Few names carry more respect in HBCU football circles than Fred McNair, and now the longtime Alcorn State leader finds himself back in the spotlight — this time in Baton Rouge. Southern University announced Monday that McNair will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season following the dismissal of Terrence Graves.

McNair, who joined the Southern University coaching staff in the fall of 2024, brings both stability and championship pedigree to a program searching for direction. The older brother of the late NFL quarterback Steve McNair, Fred McNair spent seven seasons as head coach at Alcorn State, where he guided the Braves to multiple SWAC East Division titles and a conference championship in 2019.

After stepping down from Alcorn State following the 2023 season, McNair arrived in Baton Rouge as the Jaguars’ tight ends coach. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach prior to the 2025 season and then to co-offensive coordinator. He shared duties with Mark Frederick — as Southern tried to spark an offense that had grown stagnant. Now, in a matter of days, he’s gone from co-coordinator to caretaker of one of the most tradition-rich programs in HBCU football.

Fred McNair led Alcorn State to four consecutive SWAC East titles and two conference titles from 2016 through 2019.

McNair will lead Southern against his HBCU

At Alcorn, McNair’s teams played with discipline and clarity. They didn’t waste possessions, didn’t flinch late in games, and often made the routine look surgical. That’s what Southern is hoping to rediscover after a 1–6 start that has seen it average just 17.5 points per game while surrendering nearly twice that.

The road ahead offers no favors. Southern still has Florida A&M at home, back-to-back road trips to Arkansas–Pine Bluff and his beloved Alcorn State, then closes with Texas Southern and the Bayou Classic against Grambling. McNair’s challenge isn’t so much about running the table as much as giving a team that’s been searching for rhythm a sense of direction again.

McNair has long emphasized the basics — execution, confidence, and consistency — as the difference between good teams and great ones.

The Work in Front of McNair

This Southern University team hasn’t lacked effort. It’s been details — missed red-zone chances, penalties, and turnovers at the wrong time — that have undone its progress. The Jaguars have reached the red zone 19 times this season but scored touchdowns on less than half those trips. McNair’s job now is less about installing a new system and more about restoring belief.

He inherits a few bright spots: Trey Holly’s 513 rushing yards and four touchdowns, Ckelby Givens’ 7.5 sacks up front, and a defense that, despite its inconsistencies, plays hard through every possession. But numbers won’t tell the story of how McNair’s steady presence lands in a locker room that’s been through change, frustration, and noise.

That’s where his strength lies — not in slogans or flash, but in calm. McNair doesn’t raise his voice to be heard; he coaches until he’s understood. And that’s exactly what Southern University needs right now: a steady hand in a season that’s lost its rhythm, but maybe not its soul.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Southern University has parted ways with head football coach Terrence Graves, the school confirmed Monday, marking the end of a short and turbulent tenure for one of the most tradition-rich programs in HBCU football. The move comes just two days after the Jaguars’ 24–3 Homecoming loss to Prairie View A&M dropped them to 1–6 on the season.

Graves, who was hired in December 2023, led Southern University to an 8–5 record and a SWAC West Division championship in his first season in 2024. However, his second campaign unraveled quickly. The Jaguars’ lone win this fall came against Mississippi Valley State, while their offense struggled to find consistency and their defense failed to close out key games.

The decision to dismiss Graves was made amid growing frustration from fans and alumni who are accustomed to the program competing for SWAC titles. Southern’s Director of Athletics, Roman Banks, hinted at possible changes following Saturday’s loss, saying the university would “evaluate the process” moving forward. By Monday, that evaluation had reached its conclusion.

Fred McNair, SWAC

McNair Steps In as Interim Head Coach

Southern University announced that co-offensive coordinator Fred McNair will assume interim head coaching duties for the remainder of the season. McNair, who was promoted to a larger role earlier this month in an attempt to spark the Jaguars’ struggling offense, is a familiar name in HBCU football circles. He previously served as head coach at Alcorn State, where he led the Braves to multiple SWAC titles before joining Southern’s staff.

McNair will now be tasked with stabilizing the program and restoring confidence in the locker room as Southern enters the final stretch of its schedule. His leadership will be tested immediately with the Jaguars set to face Florida A&M — another powerhouse HBCU program — this weekend.

Short Tenure, High Expectations

Graves’ departure marks the second time in as many years that Southern University has fired a head coach it hired. His predecessor, Eric Dooley, was dismissed midway through the 2024 season despite leading the team to a division title in his first year. The back-to-back coaching changes underscore the high expectations that come with leading one of the SWAC’s flagship institutions. Both hires were made by

Before coming to Southern, Graves had a long résumé as an assistant coach at several programs and briefly served as interim head coach at Grambling State University in 2021. His experience across multiple HBCU programs made him an appealing candidate when Southern sought stability after Dooley’s exit. But the 2025 campaign — plagued by offensive struggles and inconsistent execution — proved too steep a hill to climb.

A Program Searching for Direction

Southern University, one of the most storied names in HBCU football, now turns once again to an interim coach in hopes of salvaging the season. The Jaguars have not had a losing season since 2019, and fan patience has worn thin amid high expectations in Baton Rouge.

For now, the focus shifts to McNair, who inherits a proud program seeking both stability and a spark. The Jaguars still have time to finish strong, but after another early coaching change, one thing is clear — Southern University expects to win, and the standard remains as demanding as ever.

Few programs in HBCU football carry expectations as high as Southern University, and with the Jaguars sitting at 1–6, head coach Terrence Graves finds himself at the center of mounting pressure. Speaking during the SWAC coaches’ weekly call on Monday, Graves acknowledged the team’s struggles but insisted that his focus remains steady — and his faith, unshaken.

“As of right now, I’m the head football coach at Southern University,” Graves said. “It’s business as usual. Until something changes, I’m going to keep doing what I do.”

Staying Grounded in Baton Rouge

Graves began the call by addressing how a tough season has affected him personally and professionally.

“I’d rather be six and one than one and six,” he said. “But I’m at peace with who I am and where I am.” He described himself as a competitor, but also a man of faith who refuses to let circumstances dictate his composure. “You have two choices in life,” he said. “You either put your head down and go, ‘woe is me,’ or you keep working and fight through it. If you keep fighting, you’ll come out better on the other side.”

That steady message resonates across Southern University’s locker room, where Graves says his players continue to fight despite the adversity. He pointed to effort and belief as signs of life within the team.

“You know, these guys have fight in them,” he said. “What we put in them and teach them — that’s what shows up. Everything in life isn’t going to go how you expect, but you’ve got to keep fighting so that eventually you win.”

Trei Oliver and Terrence Graves pose at the 2025 MEAC/SWAC Challenge press conference.

Accountability and Reflection

When asked about self-evaluation, Graves admitted the mirror conversation starts with him. “I got to be better for us to be better,” he said. “You never hear me complaining about circumstances. This is a collision sport, not a contact sport. Injuries happen, and it’s next man up.”

That mindset, he said, reflects how he intends to approach these final weeks — with honesty, humility, and persistence. As one of the most visible HBCU football coaches in the country, Graves understands that speculation comes with the territory. Athletic director Roman Banks’ recent postgame remarks suggested internal discussions about the team’s direction, but Graves said his communication with Banks has remained consistent.

“We talk every week,” he noted. “We’ve had those conversations. As of right now, I’m the coach. We’ve got meetings tonight, practice tonight — business as usual.”

HBCU rivalry game looms

Despite the noise surrounding Southern University, Graves has emphasized stability for his players. “Relationships matter,” he said. “When you pour good things into them, it sticks.” He noted that his focus has been on reinforcing positive messages rather than dwelling on negativity. “Somebody has to be positive,” Graves said. “It’s our responsibility to reassure them of what’s good and what we need to focus on. These are life lessons — not just football lessons.”

As the Jaguars prepare for Florida A&M, Graves’ calm approach remains in stark contrast to the speculation outside the program. He’s determined to keep the team unified and focused on improvement, regardless of what comes next.

“We don’t waver,” he said. “We stay even keel. We keep working. That’s the job.”

The eyes of the HBCU world remain fixed on Baton Rouge as speculation still looms to Graves’ future. Graves, meanwhile, has his focus on FAMU and he’s hoping that his players will follow suit. Whether or not they will be following him out on Saturday remains up in the air.

Southern University has suspended its chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. over hazing allegations, according to a report from WAFB 9 News in Baton Rouge. The decision came during Homecoming Week, one of the most celebrated times on an HBCU campus.

Cease-and-desist issued amid hazing investigation

In a letter sent by the university’s Director of Student Leadership and Engagement to the chapter president. Alpha Phi Alpha was notified that it is “accused of reported hazing allegations in violation of Southern University’s hazing policy,” WAFB reported. The university issued a cease-and-desist order while a full investigation continues.

Under the suspension, the fraternity loses all rights and privileges as an active organization on campus. Members are prohibited from wearing paraphernalia—such as clothing, bags, jewelry, or key chains—that identify the fraternity. The chapter is also banned from reserving space or hosting any events on or off campus.

The letter warns that any violation of the order could impact the fraternity’s future standing. Even if the investigation clears the organization. WAFB 9 reached out for a comment, but as of the publication of this article, no one has released an additional statement.

Southern University’s renewed stance against hazing

The suspension comes as Southern continues addressing the issue of hazing within its campus community. The university saw national attention earlier this year following the death of 20-year-old Caleb Wilson, a mechanical-engineering student and member of the Human Jukebox band.

Wilson died after an off-campus, unsanctioned fraternity event that led the university to halt all membership intake and issue a cease-and-desist order to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. chapter. His death prompted a university-wide review of Greek life and a renewed push for student safety.

Southern joins broader HBCU push for accountability

The latest allegations against Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity highlight Southern’s continued effort to enforce its anti-hazing policy. The move reflects a growing trend within the HBCU community. One that emphasises taking firmer stances against hazing and other unsafe initiation practices.

As the investigation continues, Southern University’s actions during homecoming week reinforce a message that resonates across the HBCU community. Hazing and unapproved pledging tactics have no place in campus life, even within the proud traditions of historically Black fraternities and sororities.

Jackson State and Southern University will meet once again on Saturday in Baton Rouge, continuing one of the most heated rivalries in all of HBCU football. For Jackson State, it’s a chance to build on early momentum and keep control of a series it has recently dominated. For Southern University, it’s a test of pride and resilience as the Jaguars look to snap a six-game losing streak against the Tigers.

HBCU contenders coming off bye

Jackson State enters the game at 2–1, coming off a dominant shutout win over Tuskegee. The Tigers are averaging 26 points per game while holding opponents to just 17.3, a testament to their physical defense and punishing ground attack.

Southern University, meanwhile, is 1–3 after a rugged nonconference stretch that included losses to North Carolina Central, Alabama State, and Fresno State. The Jaguars have struggled on both sides of the ball, averaging just 15.5 points per game while giving up more than 36.

Head coach T.C. Taylor knows his team hasn’t fully clicked yet, but the foundation is clear: Jackson State runs the football with authority and plays stout defense. Ahmad Miller has been the spark, rushing for 282 yards at an eye-popping 9.7 yards per carry with three touchdowns.

The Tigers’ defense is led by Quincy Ivory, who has tallied 25 tackles and three sacks in just three games.

Taylor acknowledged the Tigers’ offensive inconsistency but praised his team’s resilience. “We haven’t clicked on all cylinders on offense right now. Defense, I think, is playing well. Special teams has been okay. But I know what we’re capable of when everybody flips that switch,” Taylor said.

Southern University’s challenges

Southern University enters the rivalry game searching for answers. Head coach Terrence Graves believes his team used the bye week to reset. “It gave us a chance to self-scout. What we do well, let’s keep doing. What we don’t do well, let’s get rid of it,” Graves explained.

Running back Trey Holly has been a bright spot for Southern University, rushing for 267 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy has shown flashes with 316 passing yards and two scores, but turnovers have haunted the Jaguars. They lost five fumbles through their first four games, a trend Graves says simply cannot continue. “It’s almost impossible to beat a good team with turnovers,” he said.

Matchup keys

The game will hinge on the battle up front. Jackson State’s offensive line has paved the way for 254 rushing yards per game.

Southern University counters with linebacker Ckelby Givens, who already has 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss.

If the Jaguars can slow Miller and the Tigers’ stable of backs, they’ll give themselves a chance to control tempo.

Quarterback play is another major storyline. Taylor has rotated between Jacobian Morgan and Jared Lockhart, with Lockhart showing deep-ball promise in his start against Tuskegee. Graves has not committed to a single starter either, leaving open the possibility that multiple Southern University quarterbacks will see action.

HBCU Rivalry As Close As It Gets

The rivalry between Jackson State and Southern University is one of the crown jewels of HBCU football. Since the first meeting in 1929, the programs have staged classic battles in front of packed houses and national television audiences. Southern University leads the overall series 37–35 but Jackson State has won the last six meetings, including a 41–13 victory in the 2024 SWAC Championship Game. Southern University’s last win came in the spring of 2021, a 34–14 triumph in Jackson.

What’s at stake for Southern and Jackson State

For Jackson State, a win means continuing its early-season push and extending its stranglehold in this rivalry. For Southern University, the game represents more than just a shot at redemption — it’s about reestablishing confidence and showing that the Jaguars can still compete at the highest level of HBCU football.

“Anytime you go down into Baton Rouge you better have your mind right as a football team and as a program,” Taylor said.

Graves echoed the sentiment, reminding his team to “block out the noise” and focus on execution.

As Saturday approaches, fans across the HBCU landscape know what this matchup represents: tradition, intensity, and bragging rights that last all year — or at least until they meet again.

The sound came first: a soaring, gospel-infused swell of “To God Be The Glory” pouring out of one of America’s most iconic HBCU marching bands, Southern University’s famed Human Jukebox. Then the sight: hundreds of band members in crisp blue and gold uniforms forming the name “Caleb” across the turf, every step deliberate, every note carrying the weight of loss and legacy.

The moment wasn’t just another halftime show. It was a reminder of the bonds forged inside of an HBCU marching band family.

The Life of Caleb Wilson Jr.

The tribute honored Caleb Wilson Jr., a junior mechanical engineering major and trumpet player with the Human Jukebox who died on February 27, 2025. His death, linked to an alleged fraternity hazing incident, shook the Southern University community to its core. Investigations led to charges against several fraternity members, but the pain was more personal for those who marched beside Wilson.

He wasn’t just a student or a musician — he was family. The Human Jukebox, known worldwide for its thunderous brass and razor-sharp precision, is also a brotherhood and sisterhood. Losing Wilson meant losing one of their own mid-song.

Halftime Healing

Saturday’s tribute, performed during Southern’s 2025 home opener, gave the band and its community a chance to turn grief into something transcendent. The Human Jukebox spelled his name in massive letters across the field, a reminder that Wilson’s presence will echo every time the band plays.

The moment carried echoes of Mardi Gras earlier this year, when the Human Jukebox turned its route through New Orleans into a moving memorial. With black mourning bands across their signature “S” logos, they marched in Bacchus playing Stevie Wonder’s “Love Light In Flight.” That night, they transformed a street parade into a public vow: “For you, Caleb.”

More Than a Performance

The Human Jukebox has always been more than entertainment. Within HBCU culture, marching bands are storytellers, griots with tubas and snares, carrying joy, struggle, and tradition into stadiums and streets. On Saturday, their story was one of resilience.

They carried Wilson’s spirit note by note, step by step. It wasn’t just a tribute to a fallen member but a reminder of how deeply music binds the HBCU community. And as they marched off the field that night, leaving “Caleb” imprinted in the grass and in memory, one thing was clear: he will always be a big part of the Juke.

The reports are now a reality. What was first reported last week has been officially confirmed: Bethune-Cookman and Southern will clash in the 2025 Tampa Bay Football Classic at Raymond James Stadium—bringing HBCU football to the home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A Neutral-Site HBCU Showdown

The October 11 showdown will spotlight a matchup from one of the most historic HBCU conferences on one of football’s biggest stages. Kickoff is locked for 4 p.m. Eastern, with tickets going on sale Tuesday, Sept. 2, via tampabayfootballclassic.com and Ticketmaster.

In the spirit of most HBCU football Classics, the Tampa Bay Football Classic is packaged as more than a game—it’s an all-day celebration. Every ticket purchased includes access to pre- and post-game events, a VIP day-party atmosphere, and entrance to the main event inside Raymond James Stadium.

Bands, Culture, and a New Twist

Of course, no HBCU Classic is complete without the bands, and Tampa will deliver in a big way. The Bethune-Cookman Marching Wildcats are locked in, while the Southern University Human Jukebox is tentatively set to make the trip as well. Fans can expect halftime to feel like a headliner concert rather than just a break in the action.

And then there’s the new wrinkle: Band VERZUZ Band. Inspired by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, who created the Verzuz series, this marching band battle will flip the script. Instead of artists trading hits, powerhouse bands will go head-to-head in eight rounds of “super heavyweight” action, streamed worldwide.

Michael E. David, founder of the Tampa Bay Football Classic and the Original Battle of the Bands—which famously inspired the movie Drumline—called the event “a one-of-a-kind atmosphere” that will resonate far beyond Tampa.

“We are equally thrilled to introduce our new marching band sport special event property in Band VERZUZ Band. Band VERZUZ Band is the sweet musical science in the precision of the sport of marching band.”

NFL Tampa Bay Football Classic Bethune-Cookman Southern University HBCU
Economic and Cultural Impact

The Classic isn’t just about football and music—it’s about community. Andre “Lucky” White, the event’s executive director, said the game will “bring our communities together to celebrate and share in the culture, sportsmanship, and richness of the Tampa Bay Area and its HBCU culture.”

Early estimates suggest the game could generate $10 million to $30 million for the local economy. For the Moses White Foundation, a co-sponsor of the event, that economic lift goes hand-in-hand with its mission of education, revitalization, and empowerment for underserved communities in Tampa.

The Bigger Picture

For HBCU football, landing another NFL venue is part of a growing trend. From the recently cemented Georgia Classic in Atlanta to this new Classic in Tampa, HBCU matchups, specifically in the SWAC, are carving out spaces in the same stadiums that host the NFL’s biggest games. It’s a clear sign of rising demand for HBCU sports, culture, and entertainment. From both fans and from major cities eager to showcase them.

Bethune-Cookman and Southern will bring the SWAC smoke. The bands will bring the show. Tampa will bring the stage. On Oct. 11, the Tampa Bay Football Classic won’t be just another date on the schedule.

Former LSU running back Trey Holly introduced himself to HBCU football in a big way on Saturday night. The Louisiana prep star made his presence felt after being named starter for the Southern University made his presence felt immediately.

Holly broke off an 80 yard run early in the second quarter against North Carolina Central that resulted in a score.

In his first half of HBCU football he had 93 yards on three carries, though his team trailed 17-14 at halftime.

Holly has shown his ability that made him a highly coveted prospect ahead of signing with LSU. As a senior, he rushed for 2,694 yards and 38 touchdowns while leading Union Parish to the LHSAA Division III title game. He logged 51 games of 100 or more rushing yards and averaged 159.4 yards per game throughout his career.

Recruiting services ranked Holly as a four-star prospect. Rivals.com listed him as the nation’s No. 4 running back.

Trey Holly played in three games for LSU in 2023, totaling 110 rushing yards and a touchdown. However, LSU suspended him following a February 2024 arrest involving multiple felony charges. Authorities later dropped the attempted second-degree murder charge, but he still faces weapons-related charges.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly stated that Holly couldn’t return to the team until he resolves his legal matters. He clearly has found a home at Southern and looks to be a big part of the offense this season as it hopes to contend for its first SWAC title since 2013.

Former LSU running back Trey Holly will make his HBCU football debut with Southern University on Saturday. Holly was listed as the top running back on the depth chart released on Friday ahead of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

Southern will take on North Carolina Central, the 2022 HBCU national champion, who represents the MEAC.

Also named as a starter for Southern was quarterback Jalen Woods. SU head coach Terrence Graves declined to declare a starter to the media all week long, but Woods ultimately got the nod over Jackson State transfer Cam’Ron McCoy.

Before LSU, Trey Holly built a legendary résumé at Union Parish High School in Farmerville. Over five seasons—including his eighth-grade year—he racked up 10,532 rushing yards, breaking the state’s all-time record. He scored 160 total touchdowns, including 146 on the ground.

Southern University and Bethune-Cookman’s October 11 showdown is allegedly moving to a bigger stage. WAFB 9Sports in Baton Rouge reports the game will shift from Daytona Stadium to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Eastern (3 p.m. Central). 9Sports sources also say the contest will be called the Tampa Bay Classic.

This marks the second time in three years that the Jaguars and Wildcats will battle on an NFL field in Florida.

A Familiar Script: HBCU Matchups in NFL Stadiums

This venue switch highlights a growing trend of high-profile HBCU football games landing in NFL stadiums. In 2023, Southern and Bethune-Cookman played at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville after scheduling conflicts forced the game out of Daytona.

The trend continues this season. Florida A&M and Mississippi Valley State will face off on October 4 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the Georgia Football Classic. With that game and the new Tampa Bay Classic, fall 2025 looks like a season where HBCU football regularly steps onto NFL turf.

HBCU NFL Raymond James Stadium Tampa Bay Classic
Why This Matters for HBCU Football

Neutral-site games create opportunities. Programs can stretch recruiting footprints, rally alumni in major cities, and build bowl-like atmospheres during the regular season. For Southern and Bethune-Cookman, playing in Tampa transforms a typical conference matchup into a cultural showcase.

This fall, events in Atlanta and Tampa clearly demonstrate the rising appeal of HBCU football. The rivalries remain fierce, but the stage is now just as grand.

The Bottom Line

What started as contingency plans in Jacksonville two years ago has now become a winning formula. Raymond James Stadium will provide the stage, while Atlanta sets the tone a week earlier. Together, these games highlight a season in which fans can expect not just competition but a celebration of HBCU tradition, culture, and pride—played out under NFL lights.

The Southern University Human Jukebox is one of the most celebrated names in HBCU marching band culture. Its reputation stretches far beyond Baton Rouge, but when it comes to the Red Lobster Band of the Year, the iconic program has not yet reached the end-of-season showcase in Atlanta. For director Dr. Kedric Taylor, that reality underscores both the challenges and the expectations of leading one of the blue bloods of HBCU marching bands.

Carrying the Weight of Tradition

Taylor acknowledged that Southern lives under a microscope.

“When you think about Southern University, our band has always been critiqued harder than everybody else,” he said. “Every mistake Southern band makes is going to definitely be broadcast.”

While some programs can grow quietly, the Human Jukebox is constantly in the spotlight. Taylor said that scrutiny makes the climb to December more demanding.

“We’re everybody’s Super Bowl,” he explained.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, it’s an event that Southern University has performed at numerous times. Simply put, the band has got tradition and star power and holds an unmistakeable impact on the band world. Taylor says there are 13 current band directors who are Human Jukebox alumni.

“This band definitely places a lot of music educators in positions. So when you think about, music education — we have some phenomenal musicians here.”

Striving for Atlanta

For Taylor, getting back to Atlanta in December is still a goal.

“We would love to be there, to put on a show,” he said. “I definitely love the opportunity for our students to come back. Atlanta is a great place to perform.”

He added that the road to the Band of the Year finals is about sustaining excellence throughout the season.

“If we make it to Atlanta, it’s great,” Taylor said. “If not, there are other things that are going to be out there for us to do.”

Southern University football fans will notice something different when they pack into A.W. Mumford Stadium this fall. The historic home of Jaguar football has a brand-new playing surface — and it’s set to shine in the HBCU spotlight of Baton Rouge.

The HBCU recently pulled the cover off its renovated turf. Now, a fresh stretch of bright green with “Southern Jaguars” splashed in white, gold, and Columbia Blue on each end zone. Across midfield, “Pete Richardson Field” pays homage to the Hall of Fame coach who helped turn the Jags into a SWAC powerhouse.

Jaguar Nation won’t have to wait long to see it in action. The new turf will debut when SU hosts Alabama State on Saturday, September 6 — a night game that will bring the noise.

A Landmark in HBCU Football

A.W. Mumford Stadium isn’t just a place to play football — it’s a pillar of HBCU tradition. Since opening in 1938, the 25,500-seat venue has been the heartbeat of Southern athletics, where championships, rivalries, and the Human Jukebox have all taken center stage.

Named after Arnett W. “Ace” Mumford, the winningest coach in school history, the stadium’s roots go deep. It started with Works Progress Administration funds meant for a dormitory, reimagined into a grandstand that doubled as living quarters. Over the decades, the place has seen it all: wooden bleachers in the ’50s, major expansions in the ’70s and ’80s, and a west-side renovation in 2000 that brought luxury suites, elevators, and a new press box.

In 2009, the A.W. “Ace” Fieldhouse changed the game again, adding more seats, training rooms, offices, and state-of-the-art facilities for football and track.

Modern Touch, Classic Vibe

The turf refresh is the latest in a string of upgrades meant to keep Mumford modern and electric. Synthetic turf first went in back in 2016. In 2022, a $1.2 million track renovation gave the stadium a fresh ring of Columbia Blue. Just last year, LED lights were installed thanks to a $1.265 million gift from Louisiana Public Commissioner Davante Lewis. Creating a brighter, sharper, and louder experience for night games.

With new turf under their cleats, the Jaguars have a field that matches the energy in the stands. This isn’t just a facelift — it’s a stage built for big plays, band battles, and unforgettable Saturdays.

Ready for the Next Chapter

It’ll be about more than opening the season when the Southern University Jags line up against Alabama State. It’s about honoring the past, repping the present, and building the future of HBCU football — all on one of the most storied fields in the game.

From the Bluff to the rest of the SWAC, all eyes will be on that bright green in Baton Rouge.

HBCU football continues to produce some of the toughest defenders in the FCS football. Three of whom are on the national radar heading into 2025. Southern’s Ckelby Givens, Morgan State’s Erick Hunter, and North Carolina Central’s Malcolm Reed have all landed on the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List. Putting them in the conversation for the top defensive player in Division I FCS football.

The list, announced by Stats Perform, features 30 players across 13 conferences. For HBCUs, these three standouts represent the elite, game-changing talent that has long been a cornerstone of HBCU football.

Ckelby Givens – Southern’s Relentless Playmaker
 • Position: Defensive Lineman
 • Size: 6-2, 230 pounds
 • 2024 Stats: 73 tackles (42 solo), 27.5 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 13 QB hurries, three forced fumbles

A 2024 Buck Buchanan finalist, Givens has been the heart of Southern’s defense for the past two seasons. His explosive first step and relentless motor make him one of the most feared edge rushers in the SWAC. Opposing quarterbacks rarely get comfortable when No. 8 is on the field, and his knack for forcing turnovers has changed the course of multiple games.

With numbers like this, Givens enters 2025 as one of the early favorites to win the award named after Grambling State legend Buck Buchanan himself.

Erick Hunter – Morgan State’s Game-Wrecker
 • Position: Linebacker
 • Size: 6-4, 210 pounds
 • 2023 Stats: 75 tackles (47 solo), 9.5 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions
 • 2024: Limited to 2 games due to injury (8 total tackles, 1 sack)

Hunter’s 2023 campaign put him on the national map, earning him a spot as a Buchanan finalist. He has the length, range, and instincts to impact every level of the field, whether blowing up runs, pressuring quarterbacks, or dropping into coverage.

Injuries slowed him down in 2024, but a healthy Hunter in 2025 could be one of the most dominant linebackers in FCS football, pushing Morgan State’s defense to new heights.

HBCU Buck Buchanan Award FCS football
Malcolm Reed – NCCU’s Shutdown Specialist
 • Position: Defensive Back
 • Size: 6-3, 180 pounds
 • 2024 Stats: 60 tackles (34 solo), 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, nine pass breakups, one fumble recovery

Reed has built a reputation as one of the MEAC’s premier lockdown corners. His size and ball skills make him a nightmare matchup for opposing wideouts, while his ability to flip momentum with key takeaways adds even more value to NCCU’s defense.

With second-team All-MEAC honors last season and a preseason watch list nod this year, Reed is poised to elevate his game further in 2025, giving NCCU a legitimate contender for national defensive recognition.

The Buck Buchanan Legacy

Named after Grambling State and Pro Football Hall of Fame legend Junious “Buck” Buchanan, the award has recognized FCS defensive dominance since 1995. Past winners include NFL standouts like Dexter Coakley, Rashean Mathis, and Jared Allen, cementing its status as a launchpad for future stars.

The 2025 winner will be announced on January 3, 2026, at the Stats Perform National Awards Presentation in Nashville. With Givens, Hunter, and Reed in the mix, HBCU football can add another chapter to its proud defensive tradition on the national stage.

A former LSU running back has resurfaced at an HBCU football program just across town.

Trey Holly appeared at Southern University football practice on Tuesday, signaling his intent to revive his career with the SWAC program.

Southern Coach Confirms Holly’s Arrival

Southern head coach Terrence Graves confirmed Holly’s presence and explained his current status.

“He got enrolled in school, so we’re going to give him an opportunity to work out here,” Graves said. “He paid his way, he got admitted in school, and we’re going to give him an opportunity to be a part of this program.”

One of Louisiana’s Greatest High School Backs

Holly built a legendary résumé at Union Parish High School in Farmerville. Over five seasons—including his eighth-grade year—he racked up 10,532 rushing yards, breaking the state’s all-time record. He scored 160 total touchdowns, including 146 on the ground.

Holly played in three games for LSU in 2023, totaling 110 rushing yards and a touchdown. However, LSU suspended him following a February 2024 arrest involving multiple felony charges. Authorities later dropped the attempted second-degree murder charge, but he still faces weapons-related charges.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly stated that Holly cannot return to the team until he resolves his legal matters.

HBCU Offers a Second Chance

Now, Baton Rouge’s HBCU football team—the defending SWAC West champions—may provide Holly with a new path. Graves emphasized that Holly must earn his place.

“Let’s just see what he does,” Graves said. “We’ll give him an opportunity and not put a lot of added pressure on him—just let him be the young man that he is.”

In a sweeping move that could redefine higher education for underrepresented communities, six prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have joined forces to launch the first entirely online, degree-granting consortium tailored to the HBCU experience, dubbed eHBCU.

The initiative extends the cultural legacy, academic rigor, and community-centered values of HBCUs into the digital realm. Backed by philanthropic heavyweights including Blue Meridian Partners and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. This digital campus is designed to serve students globally. Breaking geographic and economic barriers that often limit access to traditional HBCU campuses.

Importantly, all degree-granting programs offered through eHBCU are provided by fully accredited Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Each institution meets rigorous academic and institutional standards. Ensuring that students receive a recognized and respected education across all eligible programs. This assurance preserves the integrity and reputation that HBCUs have built over generations, now delivered on a global digital platform.

“This is more than online learning,” said Terry Jeffries, Executive Director of eHBCU. “It’s a movement to expand the reach of what HBCUs have always represented—academic excellence, cultural pride, and upward mobility.”

A Consortium Rooted in Legacy

The consortium comprises six founding institutions:

 • Delaware State University
 • Alabama State University
 • Southern University and A&M College
 • Southern University at New Orleans
 • Southern University at Shreveport
 • Pensole Lewis College of Business & Design

Together, these institutions represent a cross-section of the HBCU landscape. From comprehensive research universities to a specialized design college, each brings distinct strengths to the virtual platform.

The Vision Behind eHBCU

Dr. Tony Allen, President of Delaware State University and Chair of the eHBCU Advisory Board, emphasized that the digital transformation isn’t just reactive—it’s proactive.

“We are ensuring that the HBCU experience, its mentorship, community, and cultural significance, remains intact even when delivered online,” Allen said. “This is a long-term investment in access and equity.”

Allen, a former speechwriter for then-Senator Joe Biden and current Chair of the President’s Board of Advisors on HBCUs, has steered Delaware State into a national model for institutional innovation. His leadership underscores the seriousness of the consortium’s ambitions.

HBCU eHBCU online degree
Leadership with Proven Track Records

eHBCU’s leadership roster reads like a who’s who of accomplished educators and trailblazers in Black higher education:

 • Dr. D’Wayne Edwards, President of Pensole Lewis College, revitalized the nation’s only design-focused HBCU and has been lauded by Fast Company as one of the most innovative educators in the world.
 • Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., President of Alabama State University, brings legislative and administrative experience, having served as both a state senator and K–12 administrator.
 • John K. Pierre, Chancellor of Southern University and A&M College, is a legal scholar and civil rights advocate who previously led Southern University Law Center to national prominence.
 • Dr. James H. Ammons, Jr., Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans, is a veteran of HBCU leadership with prior presidencies at Florida A&M University and North Carolina Central University.
 • Dr. Aubra J. Gantt, Chancellor of Southern University at Shreveport, made history as the first woman to lead SUSLA and is a champion for community college students and digital learning innovation.
Degrees That Match Workforce Demand

Upon launch, eHBCU will offer access to 33 online degree and certification programs spanning high-demand fields such as:

 • Computer Science and IT
 • Healthcare
 • Accounting
 • Business Management
 • Professional Development

According to Jeffries, the curriculum was designed in direct response to labor market trends and workforce gaps. Providing students not just with education but with tangible career pathways.

Addressing the Access Gap

Data continues to show that Black students are underrepresented in many high-growth sectors. eHBCU aims to bridge that gap by offering flexible learning formats while preserving the mentorship and community that often defines the HBCU experience.

“This platform is built not just for convenience, but for belonging,” said Jeffries. “We understand that Black students are looking for spaces where they can thrive academically and culturally, and eHBCU delivers that.”

A Philanthropic Backbone

The backing of organizations like Blue Meridian Partners—a philanthropic investment organization focused on scaling solutions to social problems—and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund adds both financial muscle and national credibility to the effort.

These partnerships are critical as eHBCU seeks to scale beyond its initial online degree offerings, with ambitions to include more HBCUs and a broader range of programs in the future.

A Digital Future Built on Tradition

While the move to virtual education is not unique in higher ed. The eHBCU consortium distinguishes itself by centering Black cultural identity within the online learning experience.

“It’s a 21st-century model built on a 19th-century tradition,” said Dr. Ross of Alabama State. “HBCUs have always been engines of opportunity. Now, we’re making that opportunity borderless.”

What’s Next?

Enrollment is now open for programs through the eHBCU platform, with student support services ranging from academic advising to career coaching—all offered virtually. The founding institutions expect to serve thousands of students globally within the first year.

For more information on online degree programs and admissions, prospective students can visit ehbcu.edu.

HBCU graduation season at Southern University and A&M College is always filled with joy and celebration, but for Angela Jones and Jordyn Jones, this year’s ceremonies carried a deeper meaning. The mother-daughter duo walked across the stage just one day apart — marking a powerful, emotional milestone that represented years of perseverance, sacrifice and unwavering support.

“It wasn’t just about walking across the stage,” Jordyn said. “It was about walking in purpose — together.”

The two never set out to graduate at the same time. What began as individual academic journeys became a shared experience filled with late-night study sessions, mutual encouragement and deep emotional connection.

“Supporting each other through school at the same time was a blessing,” Jordyn said. “We leaned on each other during tough assignments and moments of doubt. Whether it was a word of encouragement, a prayer or just knowing we weren’t alone, we kept each other going.”

Angela, who earned her undergraduate degree nearly 30 years ago, returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose.

“I always felt there was more I wanted to achieve academically,” she said. “I wanted to prove to myself and to my daughter that it’s never too late to pursue higher education.”

Watching Jordyn navigate college while pursuing her own degree was both motivating and moving for Angela.

“It felt like we were on a shared journey, each motivating the other in ways we never expected,” she said. “There was pure elation in celebrating each other’s milestones—an indescribable pride.”

The two described the moment they realized they would graduate together as one filled with laughter, tears and hugs.

Looking back, both Angela and Jordyn said they treasured the memories they made together — from long nights spent studying to moments of mutual encouragement during stressful times.

“Her determination inspired me to keep going, even when things felt impossible,” Jordyn said. “She taught me that with the right mindset and faith, you can overcome anything.”

For both women, the moment went far beyond the HBCU degrees they earned.

“This milestone means everything for our family,” Angela shared. “It represents generational growth, breaking barriers and proving that dreams can be achieved no matter the circumstances. Growth doesn’t stop at any age. Your goals are still valid, no matter how much time has passed.”

Jordyn echoed that sentiment.

“I hope people see that strength runs deep in family,” she said. “Our story shows that with faith, determination and support, anything is possible.”

Omarosa Manigault Newman has once again demonstrated her deep connection to HBCUs by graduating with both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration from Southern University Law Center (SULC), an HBCU located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This marks her third degree from a Historically Black College or University, underscoring her enduring commitment to HBCU excellence and empowerment.

The former White House aide, political strategist, and reality television personality received her degrees on May 23, 2025, in a commencement ceremony that celebrated her academic and leadership achievements. During her time at SULC, Omarosa served as President of the SULC Rotaract chapter and Senior Editor of the Journal of International Law, Business & Policy. She also earned induction into the prestigious Order of Barristers, a recognition given to top graduates in legal writing and oral advocacy.

“Graduating from Southern University Law School has been an enriching experience,” Omarosa said. “I am proud to have balanced my academic pursuits with my work in the entertainment industry, and I look forward to using my legal education to lead with purpose and to advocate for justice in every field I touch.”

Omarosa’s graduation from Southern University adds another HBCU to her academic resume. She earned her undergraduate degree in communications from Central State University, an HBCU in Wilberforce, Ohio. She later earned a master’s degree from Howard University, another prominent HBCU, before beginning doctoral studies.

Omarosa

Well-known for her trailblazing presence on The Apprentice and her work as a senior advisor in the Trump administration, Omarosa has continuously used her platform to advocate for equity and representation. Her decision to pursue legal and business education at an HBCU aligns with her longstanding focus on Black empowerment, public policy, and social justice.

Her dual-degree achievement is all the more remarkable given her continued visibility in entertainment. While enrolled at Southern, she also starred in the Hulu competition series Got to Get Out, balancing the pressures of reality television with the rigors of legal academia.

Southern University Law Center, which has a long history of producing distinguished legal minds and civil rights advocates, praised Omarosa for her contributions both in and out of the classroom. The JD/MBA program is one of the school’s most intensive tracks, designed for students aspiring to leadership at the intersection of law, business, and public service.

With her third degree from an HBCU now complete, Omarosa Manigault Newman is preparing for the next chapter in her multifaceted career. She plans to use her legal training to champion transformative initiatives in law, media, and politics—further reinforcing her status as a public figure deeply rooted in HBCU values.

HBCU excellence has struck gold—literally. A group of Southern University students has made history by winning a prestigious Emmy Award for their documentary The Hidden Sport, which celebrates the legendary Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band.

The Emmy was awarded at the 45th Annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York City, where students Loren Sullivan, Verbon Muhammad, Sydney Cuillier, Ashley Lovelace, and Eric White—collectively known as “The Dream Team”—were recognized for their work. Their short film highlights the intense physicality, precision, and passion required to be a part of the Human Jukebox, reframing the band not just as halftime entertainment, but as athletes in their own right.

Produced through a national $40,000 HBCU sports broadcasting grant competition sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and the Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, The Hidden Sport pushes the boundaries of how we define athleticism. With powerful interviews, dynamic visuals, and a culturally resonant narrative, the film shows that marching band demands the same grit, endurance, and discipline as any sport.

Southern University, HBCU, Emmy

The Emmy win is a milestone for HBCU students and a powerful reminder of the cultural force that is the Human Jukebox. The students plan to use part of the grant funds to support scholarships and enhance resources for the Human Jukebox Media Team, continuing the cycle of excellence and legacy at Southern University.

Congratulations to Southern University, the Human Jukebox, and the Emmy-winning student filmmakers for proving that when it comes to telling our stories, HBCUs continue to lead the way.

Jackson State quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy is heading to rival Southern University, marking an interesting HBCU transfer ahead of the 2025 season. McCoy, a talented two-sport athlete, brings versatility and potential to a Southern program looking to strengthen its quarterback room.

Before arriving at Jackson State, McCoy spent time at Eastern Michigan, where he played both football and baseball. He appeared in three games for EMU football in 2023, with his best outing coming in the bowl game against South Alabama. In that game, he completed 12-of-27 passes for 73 yards while rushing for 73 yards and a touchdown. On the baseball field, McCoy showcased a live arm, pitching in four games with a 2.70 ERA. His fastball touches 97 mph, and he recorded strikeouts against Bowling Green and Kent State.

McCoy joined Jackson State in 2024 and saw limited action, completing 18 of 38 pass attempts and throwing for four touchdowns. Despite a minimal impact on the field, his athletic pedigree and dual-sport experience make him a valuable pickup for Southern.

Cam’Ron McCoy helped Jackson State bring home an HBCU national title in 2024.

A native of St. Louis, McCoy starred at St. Mary’s High School under head coach Corey Bethany. He threw for 3,118 yards and 38 touchdowns as a senior, adding 15 rushing scores. A three-star recruit, he earned all-state, all-metro, and all-conference honors while also excelling in baseball.

His move adds another layer to the fierce HBCU rivalry between Jackson State and Southern. With a 97 mph fastball and proven playmaking ability under center, McCoy could become a major contributor for the Jaguars across multiple sports. HBCU fans will now be watching closely to see how his story unfolds in Baton Rouge. His transfer is yet another reminder of the dynamic landscape of HBCU athletics and the growing movement of talented athletes within these storied programs.

During a live episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal shared a surprising detail about his academic journey. During the summer, he attended classes at Southern University, an HBCU, to fulfill his graduation requirements from Louisiana State University (LSU). This revelation shows O’Neal’s connection to historically Black colleges and universities, despite never being a full-time student at one.

When asked by an HBCU graduate what he does to support HBCUs, Shaq responded with an untold story about his brief time as an HBCU student.

“I always supported. It was an HBCU that helped me graduate from LSU. A lot of people don’t know the story, but I had to transfer to Southern for summer school. So it, I mean, I’ve always been a big supporter.”

HBCU Summer School

O’Neal left LSU early to pursue his NBA career but promised his mother and then-LSU head coach Dale Brown he would complete his degree. He fulfilled that promise in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Arts in general studies with a minor in political science. Shaq’s summer as an HBCU student had a lingering effect, as he fondly recalled the feeling of being on an HBCU campus.

“Going there, the flavor, the feeling—like, sometimes I sit and I say, ‘Man, I wish I would’ve went to an HBCU. Because I went to the HBCU tournament when it was in Atlanta a couple weeks ago. And the DJs, the culture, the band, the cheerleaders—it’s just fun. And I’m a really big supporter of HBCUs.” In March, Shaq showed up in Atlanta at the SWAC basketball tournament to support his son and the FAMU Rattlers and his former teammate, Mo Williams, now the head coach at Jackson State University.

The O’Neal family’s ties to HBCUs extend beyond Shaquille. His son, Shaqir O’Neal, has made significant strides in HBCU basketball. Initially committing to Texas Southern University in 2021, hoping to “change the narrative” around HBCU hoops, Shaqir later transferred to Florida A&M University (FAMU) in 2024. At FAMU, he recorded his first collegiate double-double during the 2024-2025 season before transferring to Sacramento State, where his father will serve as the program’s general manager under first-year head coach Mike Bibby.

Shaquille O'Neal Shaq HBCU

Shaqir’s athletic prowess was further highlighted when a powerful dunk earned him a spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top Ten Plays—drawing national attention to FAMU’s basketball program.

Through personal experience and his son’s rising athletic career, Shaquille O’Neal is using his voice to redefine the narrative around HBCUs, showing that these historic institutions are not just a proud part of his past but a powerful force in shaping the future.

ATLANTA, Ga. – Students from two distinguished HBCU institutions — Southern University and Alabama A&M University — are making waves in the television and digital media landscape, earning Emmy® nominations for powerful video storytelling that celebrates campus culture, legacy, and creativity.

Southern University’s “The Hidden Sport” Captures the Spirit of the Human Jukebox

Southern University students Verbon Muhammad Jr., Ashley Lovelace, Sydney Cuillier, Loren Sullivan, and Eric White — known as The Dream Team — have been nominated for an Emmy for their documentary The Hidden Sport. The film offers an inside look at the grit, passion, and discipline of the university’s world-renowned Human Jukebox Band.

“We wanted to shed light on the time, the effort, the dedication these musicians invest,” said Cuillier. “They practice just like athletes — that’s where the name ‘The Hidden Sport’ was born.”

The documentary also pays tribute to late band member Caleb Wilson and Coach Sean Wallace, honoring their lasting impact on the university. After months of production, the students completed the project in March 2025. If victorious, the team plans to create a scholarship and donate proceeds to the Human Jukebox Band.

Alabama A&M’s “A Bulldog Family” Brings Rivalry Week to Life

Alabama A&M University also scored its first-ever Emmy nomination for the 2024 video series A Bulldog Family, produced in collaboration with JTWO Films. The series, nominated in the Branded Content – Short Form Content category, showcased the spirited traditions surrounding the Magic City Classic — the most celebrated HBCU football rivalry.

The episodic campaign, featuring five AAMU student actors, garnered over 1 million views and helped expand the university’s brand across social media and Alabama markets. “This was about sharing our story and putting a spotlight on a tradition that defines our university,” said Aaron Thompson, Assistant VP of Marketing.

The videos brought the Willingham household to life with humorous and heartfelt depictions of Bulldog pride, anchored by a fictional patriarch defending AAMU’s honor.

National Recognition for HBCU Storytelling

The Southeast Emmy Awards, hosted by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, celebrates excellence in television and digital media. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on June 14 in Atlanta, Georgia.

These nominations reflect a growing trend of HBCU students using multimedia storytelling to amplify their institutions’ rich traditions and voices — and being recognized on some of the industry’s biggest stages.

Former HBCU wide receiver Quaydarius “Quay” Davis was arrested on April 12, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, facing charges of first-degree burglary and domestic abuse by strangulation. The arrest followed the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing Davis assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Ja’Yunna Monae, who claims he choked her until she lost consciousness.

Davis’s collegiate football career was marked by multiple transfers among HBCU programs. Initially a four-star recruit from Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas, he committed to Jackson State University (JSU) under then-head coach Deion Sanders in 2021. After limited playing time at JSU, Davis transferred to Texas Southern University (TSU), where he recorded 18 receptions for 216 yards and a touchdown in the 2023 season. Following his tenure at TSU, he briefly committed to Florida A&M University before ultimately joining Southern University. However, his time at Southern was cut short when he was dismissed from the team in October 2024 for violating team rules.

Quay Davis, Southern University, HBCU

Throughout his HBCU journey, Davis’s career was overshadowed by off-field issues. In 2021, prior to his commitment to JSU, the University of Kansas terminated its recruitment of Davis following domestic violence allegations. Despite these setbacks, Davis continued to seek opportunities within HBCU football programs. His recent arrest has brought renewed attention to his troubled history, raising concerns about the support systems in place for student-athletes within HBCUs.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the HBCU community reflects on the balance between providing second chances and being cautious of who is allowed to represent our universities. Davis’s case serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by institutions in addressing complex issues involving student-athletes.

Hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz has found himself at the center of controversy following his announcement of the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during his sixth annual Boosie Bash Festival at Louisiana HBCU Southern University. The scholarship was intended to honor Caleb Wilson. A Southern University student and band member who tragically died in February in an alleged hazing incident. ?

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has threatened legal action against Boosie. Asserting that Wilson’s family was neither informed nor gave consent for the use of Caleb’s name and image in promoting the event. Murrill stated, “Caleb Wilson’s parents have advised me that they have not given consent and know nothing about their son’s name and image being used to promote this event.”

In response, Boosie took to social media to express his frustration and intent to counter the legal threats. He emphasized that his event had been planned and promoted well before Wilson’s untimely death, making it impossible for him to have exploited the tragedy for promotional purposes. Boosie stated, “MY EVENT WAS PROMOTED ON EVENTBRITE SINCE NOV 14. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED A WEEK BEFORE MY EVENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE?? HOW THE F*CK CAN I CAPITALIZE OFF SOMEONE DEATH FOR A CONCERT. ”THAT AINT ME.”

Boosie further claimed that he had attempted to contact Wilson’s family to offer financial assistance but faced obstacles in establishing contact. He posted, “IVE BEEN TRYIN TO GET YALL 20k SINCE IT WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ??T HE UNIVERSITY, NOONE WANTS TO PUT US CONTACT??

Boosie Defends His Impact on the Community

Beyond defending himself against the legal threats, Boosie also highlighted his positive influence on Baton Rouge and the surrounding community. In a passionate response directed at Murrill, he wrote:

“GENERAL LIZ MURRILL U CAN CALL ME TOO. THE REVENUE I BRING TO THE CAPITOL CITY IS UNMATCHED. THE FUN N EXCITEMENT IS UNMATCHED. NO VIOLENCE 6 YEARS IN A ROW AT MY EVENTS. NOT EVEN A FIGHT N A CITY THAT MURDERS EVERY WEEKEND. INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BRING ME DOWN N TAKE FROM ME. MAYBE YALL SHOULD ALLOW ME TO BE PUT N POSITIONS TO MAKE A CHANGE N THE CITY.”

Boosie emphasized that his annual festival, which attracts thousands of attendees. Has remained violence-free for six years—something he sees as a stark contrast to the crime rate in Baton Rouge. His remarks suggest that rather than facing legal challenges. He should be recognized as a force for positive change in the city. Especially for HBCU students and alumni who benefit from the event’s economic and cultural impact.

A Divisive Debate in the HBCU Community

The controversy has sparked a wider discussion on social media, particularly within HBCU circles. While some argue that Boosie’s intentions were honorable. Others believe he should have obtained explicit permission from the Wilson family before using Caleb’s name in connection with the event.

No formal lawsuit has been filed as of the publication of this article, but the situation underscores the importance of communication and consent when honoring individuals posthumously.

Aniya Gourdine never played in a women’s NCAA tournament game until Southern University’s landmark victory over UC San Diego in its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. A victory that led the No. 16 seed HBCU into battle with No.1 overall seed UCLA in the Spokane 1 region first-round action of the women’s NCAA tournament. Before the Jaguars’ leading scorer stepped on the hardwood inside Pauley Pavilion for the 16 vs 1 matchup, Gourdine received an encouraging message from her former teammate and WNBA’s Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. Gourdine and Reese grew up in Baltimore and played basketball at St. Frances Academy, a private Catholic high school in the city.

“It’s your very first tournament and I’m super excited for you,” Reese said in a March Madness video on social media. “…We literally grew up together, literally were best friends growing up from third grade to high school. We was learning how to play basketball together, to winning championships together, to playing at high school together, to you going to college and I’m super proud of your growth on and off the court.”

While the Bruins defeated the Jaguars 84-46 in the opening round game, Gourdine finished with 10 points, two assists and one rebound. Prior to Southern’s first-round appearance in the tournament, the 5-foot-9 senior guard helped the Jaguars defeat the University of California San Diego 68-56 in the First Four round.

She also helped Southern defeat Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the program’s second Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament crown in three seasons and earned MVP honors in the event.

Southern finished the season 21-15 overall and 15-3 in conference play.

UPDATE: Boosie responds to HBCU band scholarship controversy

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has announced her intention to pursue legal action against hip-hop legend Boosie Badazz for allegedly misusing the name and image of HBCU band member Caleb Wilson. The Southern University student died earlier this year in an alleged hazing incident. Boosie, a Baton Rouge native, had planned to honor Wilson by establishing a scholarship in his name. Funded by proceeds from his annual Boosie Bash music festival.

According to Murrill. Wilson’s parents were unaware of their son’s association with the event and did not consent to the use of his name or image in promotional materials. They have requested the removal of all references to Caleb from the event’s promotions. Murrill emphasized that the family’s understanding was that Boosie intended to contribute to an existing scholarship fund at Southern University. Without linking it to the for-profit event.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill speaks to WBRZ

“They have requested that his name, image, and any reference to a scholarship for him be removed from all promotional materials,” Murrill said, as Louisiana First News reported on behalf of Caleb Wilson’s parents. Murrill continued to say that the late Southern University student’s parents did not consent to their son’s likeness being used in “for profit” promotion.

WBRZ spoke with Murrill and reported that the family’s understanding was that Boosie wanted to start a band scholarship fund at the HBCU. Stating that he wanted to put money into starting a scholarship more than a week ago. And the discussion did not include the event.

“All of this apparently came together in a very short order. And I think the promoters saw an opportunity to promote the event on the backs of people who just suffered an unimaginable loss,” Murrill told WBRZ. “It is just disgusting; they owe the family an apology. If they wanted to do this, the first people they should have asked was the family. Nobody has made any effort to put money in the scholarship, Boosie hasn’t even funded any of it.”

Additionally, WBRZ reached out to Boosie’s camp for a response to the statement released by the AG’s Office. WBRZ reported that Boosie’s camp stands by the interview that they gave to the ABC-affiliated television station in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Friday.

Boosie Bash

Boosie, whose real name is Torence Hatch Jr., announced the Caleb Wilson Memorial Scholarship during the sixth annual Boosie Bash. A three-day rap festival held at Southern University. The event featured artists like GloRilla and DaBaby and was promoted as a fundraiser for the scholarship. In an interview, Boosie stated that he collaborated with Wilson’s father and others to establish the scholarship. Aiming to support future band students at the HBCU.

However, Murrill contends that connecting Wilson’s name to the event without the family’s consent constitutes a “dramatic misrepresentation and misappropriation” to support a for-profit endeavor. She criticized the promoters for exploiting the family’s tragedy for promotional purposes. Stating that Boosie had made no efforts to fund the scholarship. Murrill asserted that legal action is warranted due to the misappropriation of Wilson’s name and image.

From the opening tip, Southern set the tone, jumping out to a 40-20 halftime lead. Their efficiency from beyond the 3-point line (6-of-10 from three) and defensive pressure held UC San Diego to just 34% shooting, proving that HBCU teams belong on the national stage.

Southern University now advances to face No. 1 seed UCLA on Friday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN. The challenge is a big one, but after breaking through this historic barrier, the Jaguars have already proven they can defy the odds. HBCU basketball is rising, and Southern University is leading the way.

The Southern University women’s basketball team will take its talents to Los Angeles as the HBCU conference champions head to the West Coast to battle a Big West foe in the University of California San Diego on March 19 in the First Four round of the women’s NCAA tournament.

The NCAA women’s selection committee awarded both the Jaguars and the Tritons a No. 16 seed on Sunday in the Spokane I regional. The winner of the Jaguars-Tritons’ clash will face the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, UCLA, at 10 p.m. ET on March 21 at Pauley Pavilion, an arena located in the Westwood Village district of Los Angeles.

The HBCU women’s basketball program will make its second women’s NCAA tournament appearance in the last three seasons under head coach Carlos Funchess and the program’s seventh since 2002. Southern (20-14) defeated Alcorn State 64-44 on Saturday in the Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s championship game to punch a ticket to this year’s field of 68.

SU by the numbers

Southern enters Wednesday’s matchup averaging 57.2 points per game while only allowing its opponents 58 points per contest—ranked 40th in the country—due to its stifling pressure on the ball throughout games. According to HerHoopsStats, the Jaguars sit in the top 25 nationally in turnover rate for their opponents (24.4%) while their steal rate (13.6%) ranks 16th in the country.

Aniya Gourdine and Soniyah Reed lead Southern in scoring. However, Funchess’ squad contains a plethora of players who contribute off the bench, a unit that averages 22.2 per game (46th nationally).

Strength in numbers

“We continually put pressure on you with depth,” Funchess said after Southern’s win in the SWAC tournament title game. “I mean, we can go 11 deep every game with quality players. …That’s the difference between us and a lot of other teams.”

Gourdine, who earned MVP of the 2025 SWAC women’s tournament, averages 12.2 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per contest. The Temple University transfer finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Jaguars’ win against the Braves.

Reed, a key contributor off the bench, averages 9.2 points and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 38.7% from beyond the arc, second-best on the team behind Jocelyn Tate. The women’s All-SWAC tournament team selection tallied 11 of the Jaguars’ 28 bench points in the contest.

Like Southern, UC San Diego (20-15) has a stout defense. The Tritons only allow 59.1 points per contest—ranked 57th nationally—and sit 28th nationally in defensive rating (82.5), 23rd in steals per game, and 26th in forcing their opponents to commit turnovers (19.6 per game).

While Sumayah Sugapong leads the team in scoring, assists, and steals (14.9 ppg, 3.5 assists, 2.6 steals), the Tritons have a bevy of other players who provide key contributions to their on-court success. Gracie Gallegos (9.9 ppg) and Sabrina Ma (9.9 ppg) nearly average double digit point totals. Ma also creates havoc defensively, averaging 1.8 steals (third best on the team) while also shooting a team-best 34.3% from three-point range.

Other notable Triton players to watch for include Parker Montgomery, Kayanna Spriggs, and Junae Manhan.

The HBCU women’s basketball team will tip off in the First Four matchup of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday, March 19, at 9 p.m. EST on ESPNU.

ATLANTA — Aniya Gourdine ran to find her cell phone moments after the scoreboard lit up with triple zeroes as Southern defeated Alcorn State 64-44 to capture the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament championship on Saturday at Gateway Center Arena.

While Gourdine’s mother watched her celebrate with her teammates after the championship win, the first person Gourdine called was her father, Jerome.

Before Saturday’s contest, Jerome told Gourdine that the Jaguars’ contest against the Braves was the moment — playing for a chance to compete in the women’s NCAA tournament — she had been waiting for her entire life.

“I’ve been dreaming of this [playing in March Madness] since I was a little girl,” Gourdine told HBCU GameDay.

When the All-SWAC women’s tournament selection dialed her father’s number, he answered the phone with a simple message. But for Gourdine, who finished the game with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory, it was one that was much deeper than winning Saturday’s SWAC title game.

“I am so happy for you,” Gourdine recalled the statement from her dad. “It just meant everything. He was really the one who really worked me out, got me to play [basketball]. …It was only right that I called him [after Jaguars’ win].”

During the regular season, Alcorn defeated Southern 59-55 in overtime on Feb. 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gourdine, who finished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists in that contest, never forgot the feeling of losing the previous contest. Even more, a year ago, the Braves eliminated the Jaguars 59-52 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 SWAC Tournament.

But according to Gourdine, Southern didn’t view the game as a “rematch.”

“…We just locked in,” Gourdine said. “We didn’t want to take it personal and try to do too much. We treated it [the game] as a regular game and came out on top.

Gourdine, who transferred to Southern last season after two years at Temple, found a home in playing for Jaguars head coach Carlos Funchess. However, the process of Gourdine aiding Southern to win its second SWAC tourney title in the last three seasons and the program’s seventh since 2002 was not easy.

“A lot of people don’t see them [players] spending hours in the weight room in the summer or running suicides or line drills,” Funchess said in the postgame news conference. “Getting up 400 or 500 shots … getting in early in the morning, at 5:30 to get some extra shots in. People don’t see that. …They think you just throw a jersey on and go out and practice a few times and go win a game. …When you start doing this from June 3 until [now], it’s a lot of man hours that’s been put into this.”

With the Jaguars’ win, Gourdine fulfilled one of her goals this season to capture a SWAC tournament title. In the process, she captured her dream of earning a chance to feel the taste of March Madness in women’s basketball. The Baltimore native has never played nor attended a women’s NCAA tournament game.

On Sunday, Gourdine, along with her teammates, will find out which team Southern will face in the women’s NCAA tournament with the last four at-large teams — programs sitting at 65 through 68 — on March 19 and March 20 before the first round of the tournament begins on March 21. Gourdine has waited patiently to play on the national stage. However, the preparation for the bright lights on the hardwood started when she was 8 years old, competing against he two older sisters and her male cousins. She credits them for her toughness on the court

“That’s where the dog and the roughness come from,” Gourdine said.

That grit and determination has served Gourdine well. As of Saturday night, Southern is projected to play in a First Four matchup as the No. 16 seed in Region I Birmingham. If the Jaguars win that game, they will face the projected No. 1 seed South Carolina.

With the SWAC tourney behind her, the Jaguars leading scorer will seek to help Southern continue its trail of magic in March and earn a win in the NCAA tournament.

The HBCU community is mourning the tragic loss of Southern University student Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student and member of the famed Human Jukebox marching band. His passing on February 27, following an unsanctioned off-campus fraternity event, has sparked grief, outrage, and urgent action from both the university and law enforcement officials.

Southern University has taken swift steps to address the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s death. In an official statement, the university reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and accountability. The administration has issued a Cease-and-Desist Order to the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and placed an immediate halt on all membership intake for campus Greek organizations for at least the remainder of the academic year. Additionally, an internal investigation is underway, and those found in violation of the university’s Code of Conduct will face disciplinary action.

Law enforcement is actively pursuing justice for Wilson. Caleb McCray, 23, surrendered to Baton Rouge police on Thursday and has been charged with manslaughter and criminal hazing. Authorities have obtained arrest warrants for at least two other individuals involved in the hazing incident, and police are coordinating with their attorneys for their surrender. Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse emphasized that further arrests remain a possibility as investigations continue.

Caleb Wilson, Southern University

Reports indicate that Caleb Wilson suffered fatal injuries during a hazing ritual at a warehouse several miles away from where fraternity members initially claimed he had collapsed while playing basketball. According to an affidavit, McCray and at least two other Omega Psi Phi members, wearing boxing gloves, struck Wilson and eight other pledges. Wilson was punched four times in the chest, causing him to collapse and become unresponsive. Witnesses say he appeared to suffer a seizure before losing control of his bodily functions. The affidavit also notes that Wilson had visible bruising on his chest.

This heartbreaking incident has reignited conversations about hazing and accountability within HBCU Greek life. While Southern University has expressed its full cooperation with law enforcement, the administration is also urging students, faculty, and staff to utilize the university’s 24/7 mental health services during this difficult time.

In addition to the investigation into Wilson’s death, Southern University remains engaged with authorities regarding an on-campus shooting on March 2. As a precaution, external visitors are no longer allowed in dormitories.

As the HBCU community continues to process this tragedy, Southern University has vowed to provide updates as more information becomes available. Anyone with information regarding the ongoing investigations is encouraged to contact the Southern University Police Department or use the Jags Safe app.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Southern University edged Florida A&M 73-70 on Monday night at the Al Lawson Center, securing at least a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular-season title. The Jaguars improved to 19-10 overall and 14-2 in conference play, capping off a season defined by resilience and steady improvement.

Southern built a 10-point halftime lead behind the sharpshooting of Jordan Johnson, who finished with 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers. The Rattlers, however, mounted a furious second-half rally, fueled by Sterling Young’s 20-point effort. The game saw six ties and 11 lead changes, but key buckets from Michael Jacobs and clutch free throws from Cam Amboree in the final seconds sealed the win for the Jaguars.

Southern University, SWAC
Southern University claims at least a share of the 2024-2025 SWAC basketball title.

Southern’s season has been a story of perseverance. The Jaguars navigated a challenging non-conference schedule, taking tough losses to Iowa, Texas A&M, and Nebraska before hitting their stride in SWAC play. They remained undefeated at home (10-0) and put together signature road wins, including a hard-fought victory at Grambling State.

With two games remaining, Southern University looks to lock up the outright SWAC title and build momentum for the conference tournament in Atlanta. A deep tournament run could punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016.

The Jaguars will now turn their focus to their final regular-season home games against Alabama State and Alabama A&M. If they win out, they’ll secure the No. 1 seed in the SWAC Tournament and cement themselves as the team to beat.

New details are emerging from Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the wake of the death of Caleb Wilson of Southern University while attempting to pledge the Omega Psi Phi chapter at the HBCU.

Wilson was pronounced dead on Feb. 27 after being taken to Baton Rouge General Hospital. He was 20 years-old, and a member of the Southern University Human Jukebox Marching Band.

The story that was initially told to authorities was that Wilson collapsed at a local park before being taken to the hospital. A new report by WAFB’s Chris Nakamoto cites sources that claim he collapsed after being punched in the chest at a warehouse in Baton Rouge. Caleb Wilson, according to the source, was one of nine pledges who were forced to take hits. Wilson reportedly collapsed and had a seizure after being struck.

The source says the Omega Psi Phi fraternity brothers got together after taking Wilson to the hospital and concocted the story of him collapsing in the park as none of the pledging rituals were done in the park.

Caleb Wilson was a member of the Southern University Human Jukebox.

Wilson’s family released a statement following his death.

“On behalf of the Wilson family, we want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has offered their love, support, and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. The loss of Caleb has left an unimaginable void in our hearts, but your kindness and compassion have provided some solace.

Caleb was a bright and talented young man with a promising future ahead of him. His passion for life, his dedication to his studies, and his love for music and the Southern University “Human Jukebox” Marching Band were just a few of the many qualities that made him an extraordinary person.

We are committed to seeking the truth about the circumstances surrounding Caleb’s passing and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a tragedy. We appreciate the efforts of the Baton Rouge Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Southern University community, in their ongoing investigation and support.”

The Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated was founded on the HBCU campus in 1937. The school is set to hold a vigil for him on March 5.

The post HBCU world loses legendary player, coach to cancer appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Sean Wallace, a revered figure in the HBCU football community and a former standout for Southern University A&M College, passed away after a courageous battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. His sister, Antoinette Wallace, made the announcement via Facebook on Thursday morning.

He was 52 years old.

A native of New Orleans, La., Wallace’s journey through HBCU football was one of excellence, resilience, and inspiration. He made his mark as a dominant defensive force at Southern, leading the Jaguars to the #1 defense in the country during legendary coach Pete Richardson’s first season. His efforts helped Southern capture both the 1993 SWAC Championship and the Black College National Championship, cementing his legacy in HBCU history.

Wallace’s accomplishments on the field were extraordinary. He was a two-time All-SWAC selection, SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, Bayou Classic MVP, two-time Sheridan Black College All-American, Walter Camp All-American, and Kodak All-American. His success earned him a stint with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL and, in 2011, induction into the Southern University Football Hall of Fame.

He also left an impact on the young men he coached.

Sean Wallace, Southern University, HBCU

Beyond football, Wallace dedicated himself to mentorship, ministry, and business. He spent over a decade coaching high school football in Baton Rouge before returning to his alma mater as a safeties coach, bringing his passion for the game back to the HBCU ranks. Remarkably, he also returned to Southern to complete his degree after more than 25 years, setting an example of perseverance and commitment.

His greatest joys were his family. Wallace was a devoted husband of 28 years to Venio Wallace, a proud father to Tonyatta, Abraham, and Sadijah, and a loving grandfather to Tiana and DJ.

Sean Wallace’s impact on Southern University, HBCU athletics, his community, and his family will be felt for generations. His fire, faith, and leadership will never be forgotten.

The HBCU Legacy Bowl and its adjoining combine give players like Jamarius Brown a chance to show NFL scouts what they have got.

The Southern University defensive back was one of about 50 players who participated in the combine in New Orleans on Monday. For Brown, a chance to display his skills in front of all 32 NFL teams was something he has been looking forward to.

“Sometimes you know you have the talent — you never really had the platform,” Brown said. “To be here is really big.”

Brown, who played safety at the SWAC HBCU, showed off an impressive 35.5 inch vertical leap in front of the NFL scouts.

“I want to prove that I’m able to be on this stage,” Brown told reporters on Monday. “That I have the talent to make it in the NFL and I want to hopefully be a big name that comes out of HBCU football.”

Jamarius Brown — like every other player at the HBCU combine — is also playing for more than just himself. He told reporters he was playing for Southern University assistant coach Sean Wallace, who is battling cancer.

“That’s a great coach. He gives us his all,” Brown said. “ He came out, even whenever he was sick, he still did what he could to be around us and give us some key things that we need to grow and be big in this ball game. I just want to do it for him.”

In a thrilling HBCU showdown at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, Alabama State shocked the SWAC by snapping Southern University’s ten-game winning streak with a narrow 82-81 victory. The Hornets’ win handed the Jaguars their first conference loss of the season and tightened the SWAC standings as the race toward the postseason intensifies.

From the tip-off, the game was a battle of wills. Southern University, the SWAC’s top team, showcased its usual dominance early, but Alabama State refused to back down. The Hornets held a slim 39-36 lead at halftime, led by Amarr Knox’s electrifying 26-point performance. Southern fought back behind Cam Amboree’s 17 points off the bench, but Alabama State’s resilience proved decisive in the final moments.

Southern University, HBCU

With seconds left, Southern’s late three-pointer cut the deficit to one, but Alabama State held firm at the free-throw line, sealing the win and shaking up the HBCU basketball landscape. Antonio “TJ” Madlock added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets, while CJ Hines chipped in 19 points, including clutch three-pointers that kept Alabama State ahead.

The loss was a rare setback for Southern (10-1 SWAC, 15-9 overall), which remains atop the standings but now faces growing pressure from Bethune-Cookman (8-3), Jackson State (7-3), and a trio of 7-4 teams—Florida A&M, Texas Southern, and Alcorn State. Alabama State (6-5) remains in the mix, now just a game back from the pack.

HBCU basketball fans are in for an exciting finish as the SWAC’s top teams jockey for position down the stretch. With Alabama State proving that even the conference’s best can fall, the battle for SWAC supremacy is far from over.

Czavian “Zae” Teasett, one of the most promising quarterbacks in HBCU football, has announced his transfer from Southern University to Grambling State University. This high-profile move adds fuel to the already intense SWAC rivalry between the two storied programs and positions Grambling for a potential resurgence in the 2025 season with a veteran signal caller.

Teasett, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, made a significant impact during the 2024 season with Southern. Known for his dual-threat abilities, Teasett completed 71 of 129 passes for 941 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions. On the ground, he added 217 rushing yards and one touchdown on 39 carries. His impressive early-season performances earned him the title of SWAC Player of the Week in Week 2 and an Honorable Mention for the Stats Perform FCS National Freshman Player of the Week in September.

Despite his achievements, Teasett’s time at Southern took a turn late in the season when the coaching staff shifted their focus to freshman quarterback Jalen Woods. Woods led the Jaguars to a 24-14 victory over Grambling in the 51st Annual Bayou Classic, a hallmark event in HBCU and SWAC football. Following this, Teasett entered the NCAA transfer portal in December, seeking a fresh start.

A Rivalry Rekindled in the SWAC

The move to Grambling State not only gives Teasett a chance to showcase his skills in a new environment but also heightens the stakes in the legendary Southern-Grambling rivalry. Southern dominated the SWAC West in 2024 with a 7-1 conference record and emerged as one of the top programs in HBCU football. Grambling, on the other hand, struggled with a 2-6 conference record, underscoring the need for a game-changer like Teasett.

Coach Mickey Joseph at Grambling is rebuilding the Grambling State University program, and Teasett’s arrival could be a cornerstone for their future success. His ability to make plays with both his arm and legs aligns well with the Tigers’ need for a dynamic leader on offense.

HBCU Football Landscape Shifting

Teasett’s transfer highlights the growing competition within HBCU football and the SWAC conference. The transfer portal has become a pivotal tool for programs to bolster their rosters and compete at the highest level of HBCU athletics. For Grambling, landing Teasett signals their intent to return to the top tier of the SWAC.

Looking ahead, the 2025 Bayou Classic is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated games in HBCU football. With Teasett now wearing the black and gold of Grambling, the stage is set for an unforgettable showdown against his former team.

Teasett’s journey is more than a personal comeback—it’s a reminder of the excitement, talent, and passion that define HBCU football and the SWAC. His transfer is poised to make waves in the conference and elevate one of the greatest rivalries in college sports to new heights.

Read this before you bet.

The post Ole Miss facing dangerous, upset-minded HBCU squad appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
On Tuesday night, the HBCU Southern University Jaguars head into hostile territory to face the 17th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels, a team boasting a 9-1 record and a dominant +18.5 scoring margin this season. While Southern, standing at 5-4, is a significant underdog—Bet MGM has the spread at Ole Miss -24.5—the Jaguars’ recent history of shocking ranked SEC opponents gives bettors reason to take notice. Just last season, the HBCU stunned then-No. 21 Mississippi State on December 3, 2023, showcasing their potential to thrive in high-pressure games.

Southern’s offense has been its strongest weapon this year, averaging 84.9 points per game, an impressive figure compared to Ole Miss’ 82.7 points per contest. The Jaguars’ shooting efficiency, with a 47.0% field goal percentage, can keep them in games when they find their rhythm. Guards Jordan Johnson (11.3 PPG) and Michael Jacobs (11.1 PPG) lead the scoring effort, with the team hitting an average of 7.9 three-pointers per game at a respectable 34.8% clip.

The problem, however, lies on the other side of the ball. Southern has struggled defensively, allowing 69.8 points per game, and they will need a near-flawless effort to slow Ole Miss’ elite attack. The Rebels’ offense is led by sharpshooter Sean Pedulla, who averages 14.4 points per game while hitting 46.7% from deep. Ole Miss as a team shoots 46.5% from the field and averages nearly 10 made threes per game. If Pedulla and fellow guard Jaylen Murray (13.2 PPG, 44.0% 3PT) get hot early, the Rebels could easily pull away.

HBCU, Southern University

Another challenge for Southern is Ole Miss’ rebounding prowess. The Rebels average 35.5 rebounds per game, while Southern grabs 38.3 boards, fueled by forward DaMariee Jones, who leads the Jaguars with 4.8 rebounds per game. Southern’s ability to capitalize on second-chance opportunities and limit Ole Miss’ offensive rebounds will be key.

Still, bettors should remember that HBCU programs like Southern often thrive in the underdog role. Last season’s upset over Mississippi State happened because of clutch shooting and a scrappy defense. The same formula could allow Southern to stay within the 24.5-point spread or, with a perfect storm, pull off another monumental upset.

While a straight-up win would be seismic, Southern’s offense and confidence make them a sneaky pick to cover the spread—keeping hope alive for another HBCU miracle.

JACKSON, Miss. | The records are thrown out the window when teams reach the first weekend in December with the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship and a bid to the 2024 Celebration Bowl on the line. That is what is at stake on Saturday afternoon when SWAC East Division champion Jackson State hosts West Division champion Southern at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The HBCU football championship matchup is set to kick off at 1 p.m. on ESPN2.

No. 15/18 Jackson State (10-2, 8-0 SWAC), winners of eight consecutive games, faces Southern (8-4, 7-1 SWAC) for the second time this season, having played on Sept. 14 in Jackson in non-conference action. The Tigers won that game 33-15 by jumping out to a 20-point first-half lead behind a balanced offense although Southern was able to pass for 387 yards in the loss.

The two legendary HBCU football programs met two years ago in the championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium with the Tigers winning their second consecutive conference championship with the victory. The two teams have met three times in the championship game with Southern leading 2-1 in those meetings.

The 2024 Bayou Classic had a bit of everything — including some Boosie and the Southern University Human Jukebox band.

The Baton Rouge native made a halftime appearance with the Human Jukebox on a day when

Southern University claimed its third straight Bayou Classic victory, defeating Grambling State 24-14 at Caesars Superdome on Saturday. The Jaguars, who had already clinched the SWAC West title and a spot in the SWAC Championship Game, showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball.

Southern struck early with CJ Russell’s one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. They added a second-quarter field goal by Joshua Griffin to extend their lead to make the game 10-7 at halftime.

After Boosie and the Human Jukebox cleared the field, the game was on and things got interesting.

Southern University, Bayou Classic

Grambling State’s Tylon Williams provided a spark with a thrilling 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but Southern responded decisively in the third quarter. Quarterback Jalen Woods connected with Chandler Whitfield for a spectacular 41-yard touchdown pass, shifting the momentum back to Southern.

In the fourth quarter, Grambling narrowed the gap to 17-14 after Keilon Elder’s touchdown run. Southern sealed the victory with a game-clinching 45-yard touchdown run by Kendric Rhymes, who finished with 110 rushing yards and was a key figure in the Jaguars’ offensive success.

Defensively, Southern University dominated the trenches, forcing critical mistakes and limiting Grambling’s offensive output. Vincent Page Jr. led the charge with eight tackles and two tackles for loss, helping stifle Grambling’s attempts to mount a comeback.

With the win, Southern University moved to 8-4 and capped off another successful Bayou Classic and now sets its sights on Jackson, MS, where it will face SWAC East champion Jackson State next Saturday. The SWAC Championship Game will determine who advances to the Celebration Bowl to take on MEAC champion South Carolina State in a battle for HBCU football supremacy.

No word on whether or not Boosie will be accompanying Southern to Jackson.

Southern University clinched the SWAC West Division title with a decisive 31-9 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium. This win secures Southern’s spot in the SWAC Championship Game against Jackson State on December 7, with the winner advancing to the Celebration Bowl to represent the SWAC against MEAC champion South Carolina State.

Under the leadership of first-year head coach Terrence Graves, Southern dominated UAPB in front of a crowd of 17,740 fans. The team showcased a balanced offense and a tenacious defense, limiting UAPB to just nine points while generating over 400 yards of total offense. The victory also sets the stage for an electrifying finish to the season as Southern prepares for its annual Bayou Classic rivalry game against Grambling State before heading to the conference title showdown.

This year’s SWAC Championship Game is a rematch of the 2022 battle, where Southern fell to Jackson State. The Jaguars are determined to rewrite the narrative under Graves , an assistant on that squad, and claim their place among HBCU football’s elite. The two teams met earlier this year in Jackson, with JSU coming up with a 33-15 win. This matchup promises high stakes and added drama, with both teams eyeing the coveted Celebration Bowl berth.

Southern University

HBCU football fans can expect an intense clash as Southern University seeks redemption against a formidable Jackson State team. Meanwhile, Southern will also use the Bayou Classic as a platform to fine-tune their game plan and continue building momentum.

For Southern, this season represents a resurgence in HBCU football prominence, with Graves leading the charge. A victory in the SWAC Championship would not only avenge last year’s loss but also solidify Southern’s position as a powerhouse in HBCU athletics. December 7 will undoubtedly mark a pivotal moment for the Jaguars and their devoted fanbase.
