The SWAC West is back in flux, I mean it is November after all. Prairie View A&M entered the weekend unbeaten in conference play, but after falling to Alabama State, the division picture is serving up a little hope heading into the holiday season.

Now, with just three weeks left in the regular season, Prairie View, Texas Southern, and Grambling State are all in the mix — and the November schedule sets up a finish that could come down to the final weekend, as usual.

Alabama State spoils Prairie View’s momentum

Final: Alabama State 31, Prairie View A&M 28
Location: Panther Stadium — Prairie View, TX

It was a chance for a signature win for Prairie View A&M, but Alabama State, out of the East Division, had other plans.

The Hornets erased a 14-point deficit and leaned on quarterback Andrew Body and running back Marcus Harris II, who combined for four rushing touchdowns. Body scored twice before leaving the game for good with an injury just before halftime, but ASU’s defense handled the rest — intercepting Cameron Peters four times and sealing the win after a missed 53-yard field goal in the final seconds.

Prairie View fell to 6-3 overall, 4-1 SWAC, but still sits atop the West thanks to clean head-to-head wins over both Texas Southern (21-14) and Grambling State (28-13).

Alcorn State stings Texas Southern

Final: Alcorn State 33, Texas Southern 14
Location: Shell Energy Stadium — Houston, TX

Down in Houston, Alcorn State played spoiler. The Braves dominated on the ground, rushing for 224 yards, led by Reggie Davis’s 87 yards and three touchdowns. Texas Southern struggled to sustain drives and fell behind early, dropping to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the SWAC.

The loss dents TSU’s momentum, but they’re still in the thick of it, holding the head-to-head tiebreaker over Grambling after a 21–20 win earlier this year.

Grambling stays hot at home

Final: Grambling State 13, Alabama A&M 10
Location: Eddie G. Robinson Stadium — Grambling, LA

Grambling State is quietly becoming the biggest storyline in the West. The G-Men notched their third straight win, improving to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Behind a stingy defense and solid special teams, Grambling held off Alabama A&M and kept its postseason hopes alive. GSU didn’t score an offensive touchdown on Saturday but still managed to win. Grambling returned a punt 64 yards for the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter and Grambling defeated Alabama A&M 13-10 on Saturday. They’ll need help to catch Prairie View — but if the Prairie View and Texas Southern slip again, the Tigers will be waiting.

What’s left: the road to SWAC Championship

Here’s what’s still on deck for the West contenders as the regular season winds down:

November 8 (Week 11)

  • Prairie View A&M at Alabama A&M (2 PM) — Prairie View can tighten its grip on the West with a bounce-back win. A loss opens the door for TSU or Grambling.
  • Texas Southern at Alabama State (2 PM) — Massive crossover game. TSU must win to stay alive; ASU is chasing the East crown.
  • Bethune-Cookman at Grambling State (2 PM) — Grambling goes for its fourth straight. A win keeps pressure on PVAMU, but Bethune-Cookman is a contender in the East.

November 15 (Week 12)

  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Senior Day in Prairie View; a chance to clinch if the Panthers handle business.
  • Texas Southern at Southern (2 PM) — TSU can’t afford an upset loss here.
  • Grambling State at Alcorn State (2 PM) — Classic trap game — G-Men can’t slip if they want to keep hopes alive.

November 22 (Week 13)

  • Mississippi Valley State at Prairie View A&M (2 PM) — Potential clincher for Prairie View.
  • Alabama A&M at Texas Southern (2 PM) — TSU’s final push.
  • Grambling idle until Bayou Classic — The G-Men will be scoreboard watching.

November 29 — Bayou Classic (Grambling vs. Southern, 1 PM)

If Prairie View drops a game before this point, the Bayou Classic could carry major championship weight — the kind of scenario that makes SWAC football magic in late November.

Big picture: Prairie View still controls it all

  • Prairie View can clinch the West by winning out — any combination of three wins (vs Alabama A&M, UAPB, and MVSU) locks them into SWAC Championship.
  • Texas Southern must win out and hope Prairie View loses twice.
  • Grambling needs to win out and see Prairie View lose twice and Texas Southern once.

The federal government shutdown has had a tremendous impact on thousands of people — but one HBCU coach is looking to provide some assistance. Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has agreed to pay for 100 tickets for furloughed government workers for his team’s next game.

Jackson made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

“What’s up Panther Nation. It’s your head coach Tremaine Jackson,” Jackson said standing on the football field. “Big game on “The Hill” this weekend. Your Panthers vs. the Alabama State Hornets. We need you there.”

He encouraged fans to buy their tickets to the game online — which had still not sold out.

“This week, we’re doing something special. If you’ve — in any way — been affected by the government shutdown, all you have to do is come to will-call with your federal ID. And I’m going to personally buy your ticket to the game,” Jackson said. “That way you guys can get out and have a good time, watch a great football game. Saturday at 2 PM, can’t wait to see you there. Go Panthers.”

Jackson making noise in the HBCU world and beyond

Jackson has been making noise since he arrived at the HBCU on the heels of a Division II national championship appearance at Valdosta State. Last week he made waves when he admonished his fans to sell out the team’s homecoming game. That effort fell short as the 11,427 fans that attended was well short of the 16,000 capacity for Blackshear Field.

But this effort is a way of outreach for those in the Houston area who have been impacted by the government shutdown, which started this month and threatens to move into November.

The game is a matchup of two of the top HBCU programs as Prairie View A&M is 6-2 and 4-0 in the SWAC while Alabama State is 5-2, 3-1 in SWAC play.

Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has been making headlines in HBCU football since he arrived in Texas. Now the coach of one of the hottest teams in SWAC football is making waves ahead of homecoming.

Jackson posted on social media earlier this week challenging Prairie View A&M fans to sell out the program’s homecoming game against Lincoln University.

“ I got an issue. My issue is I just talked to Josh, our ticket guy, and he told me that the game isn’t sold out,” Jackson tweeted. “And I just can’t understand why the football game for homecoming at Prairie View A&M is not sold out.”

Though he said he didn’t understand, he did offer up a few reasons as to why the tickets hadn’t been sold out.

“I understand that you might not be used to filling up Panther Stadium and all the alums coming back,” Jackson said. “You used to be in another deal and it just wasn’t that many people. Well, now we have Panther Stadium, now we have, different things going on in the football program. So we need the game to be sold out.”

State-of-the-art HBCU/FCS facility

The facility that PVAMU calls home is almost a decade old as it replaced the 6,000 seat stadium back in 2016. It is a state-of-the art facility — one of the best in HBCU and FCS football — that seats nearly 15,000.

And it isn’t that the program isn’t doing well. PVAMU is currently 5-2 and 4-0 in the SWAC in Tremaine Jackson’s debut, and likely headed for a SWAC championship game.

“If the game isn’t sold out, why would you even come back here? Homecoming is about having a good time — for the game.

It makes sense, given those facts, that the game would be a hot ticket. But that doesn’t always happen at HBCU homecomings.

PVAMU

Do opponents matter too much?

Responses to Jackson’s tweet online were pretty telling. Many people reference the fact that PVAMU’s opponent is less-than-desirable. It is scheduled to play Lincoln University — a small school out of California that isn’t Division I or even a part of the NCAA. It is a school that routinely plays HBCUs and other FCS football programs in money games, much like when HBCUs play Power Five programs.

“Look, I get wanting to pack the stadium for homecoming — that makes sense,” one follower responded. “What I don’t get is why you’d want fans to watch y’all drop 50+ on a team that already canceled two games this season. Not everyone wants to see a scrimmage, but I get it.”

Another fan speculated that the perception of the opponent is also impacting enthusiasm for the game.

“To be honest, I’m hearing that a lot of the older alumni are turned off by our opponent this year,” she wrote. “I mean, with all due respect to Lincoln, they’ve been outscored 215-8 this season.”

Jackson responded to this line of thinking directly.

“Can’t do anything about that this year,” he said in response. “It’ll change when it changes. Right now be at the game.”

Prairie View isn’t alone

No two HBCU homecomings are alike, but many of them face a struggle to sell out the actual game. Meanwhile outside events — including tailgating — seem to grow in stature each year.

Tremaine Jackson isn’t the first HBCU coach to question this phenomenon, but he did spark a conversation that is worth having moving forward. Is the football game still the centerpiece for HBCU homecomings or has it taken a permanent backseat?

Let us know in the comments below.

The HBCU football world might be watching one of its fastest risers make another leap. According to The Athletic’s Chris Vannini, Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson has emerged as a candidate to replace Trent Dilfer, who was fired earlier this month at UAB.

Vannini noted that Jackson is “among the names being considered” for the job. That alone shows how quickly his profile has grown. Jackson hasn’t been at Prairie View long. He took over at the HBCU in January after leading Valdosta State to a Division II national title appearance and two Gulf South Conference crowns.

Early Success at Prairie View A&M

Jackson has made an immediate impact since arriving at PVAMU. In his first season, he’s guided the Panthers to the top of the SWAC West standings with a 3–0 conference record (4–2 overall).

Up next is a crucial road matchup against Southern University. A win would push Prairie View A&M to 4–0 in division play, setting up a strong run toward the SWAC title game. For a first-year HBCU head coach, that’s no small feat.

A Track Record of Building Programs

Before taking the Prairie View job, Jackson earned his reputation as a defensive strategist and program builder. The former Texas Southern player spent time on multiple staffs across the region. He climbed the ranks through stops at Colorado Mesa, Texas State, and Abilene Christian.

At Valdosta State, Jackson found his groove. He turned the Blazers back into a powerhouse in just three years, posting a 30–9 record and earning AFCA National Coach of the Year honors. His teams were tough, disciplined, and fearless — qualities that defined his rise and style of coaching.

HBCU Trent Dilfer Tremaine Jackson Prairie View A&M
Culture First, Always

When Prairie View called, Jackson wasted no time setting a tone. His viral post, titled “Panther Portal Understanding,” outlined strict rules for transfer recruits.

“When I follow you, there’s a four-hour window to follow back — or we’re done.”

That no-nonsense message reflected his philosophy: direct, unapologetic, and rooted in accountability.

Challenging the Status Quo

Jackson also made headlines for challenging recruiting tactics at bigger programs. Earlier this year, he criticized the “spectacle over substance” approach at the FBS level, arguing that too many players were being sold hype instead of development.

“If it doesn’t build you emotionally, mentally, and spiritually,” he wrote, “don’t sell it.”

That kind of authenticity has made Tremaine Jackson stand out in a sport full of slogans and coach-speak. Whether or not UAB ultimately hires Jackson to replace Trent Dilfer, his inclusion in the conversation says plenty.

The legendary group TLC will headline the State Fair Classic, Texas’ biggest HBCU football matchup. For anyone who grew up around HBCU culture, the Classic is more than a game — it’s a weekend-long gathering of alumni, students, and families. Adding TLC to the 2025 lineup connects generations, pairing one of the most iconic groups in music with one of the most iconic events in HBCU football.

TLC’s sound has always lived in HBCU spaces

TLC helped define the soundtrack for the 1990s with hits like Waterfalls, Creep, and No Scrubs. They sold more than 65 million records worldwide, and their music still gets heavy rotation at cookouts, tailgates, and homecomings across the HBCU community. Their presence at the State Fair Classic makes sense — they’re a group that resonates with parents, alumni, and current students alike.

State Fair Classic: Grambling vs. Prairie View is bigger than football

The State Fair Classic brings Grambling State and Prairie View A&M to Dallas each fall. If you’ve ever been, you know the matchup isn’t just about the teams on the field. The halftime battle of the bands, the tailgates outside the Cotton Bowl, and the sea of school colors are just as important as the scoreboard. For many alumni, it’s a homecoming away from home, and for students, it’s a chance to stand in the middle of tradition.

Why adding TLC raises the stakes for 2025

For the HBCU community, events like the State Fair Classic carry weight beyond the game itself. They’re about connection, culture, and visibility. By headlining, TLC gives the C;assic some added national attention while still fitting naturally into the traditions that make HBCU football special. This year’s Classic isn’t just another matchup — it’s a reminder of how music and HBCU culture move together and continue to define the experience.

PRAIRIE VIEW, TexasPrairie View A&M University (PVAMU), a leading HBCU located in Texas, has announced the immediate end of its Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. The move is part of a larger plan to reshape Panther Athletics for long-term stability and a better student-athlete experience.

This decision follows a full review of the university’s athletic programs. With college sports changing quickly, PVAMU and many other HBCU athletic departments must make hard choices to remain competitive while staying true to their mission. By realigning its resources, the university aims to focus on sports that serve more student-athletes and better fit its long-term goals.

Honoring a Proud Legacy While Planning Ahead

For years, PVAMU’s tennis teams have reflected the spirit of HBCU pride—on the court and in the classroom. Their success, commitment, and sportsmanship will always be part of the university’s history. However, with rising costs and aging facilities, the university saw a need to invest more in its primary sports.

University leaders believe this change will help improve athletic facilities, grow student services, and ensure future progress. PVAMU also plans to boost support for women’s sports, helping the school meet Title IX requirements and open more doors for female athletes.

Student-Athlete Support is a Top Priority

PVAMU is working hard to support all tennis student-athletes during this transition. Scholarships will remain in place through graduation for those in good academic standing who choose to stay. Student-athletes who want to continue playing tennis elsewhere will receive help with transfers, academic planning, and personal support.

The university will also provide mental health and wellness services to help students stay on track.

While this marks the end of an era, PVAMU remains focused on building a strong, modern athletics program. The goal is to reflect the core values of HBCUs—excellence, access, and community. Panther Athletics will continue to grow in a way that supports student success on every level.

Prairie View A&M officially kicked off its 2025 football preseason on Wednesday morning. The Panthers hit the field under the direction of new HBCU head coach Tremaine Jackson. While energy was high, Coach Jackson made it clear—expectations are even higher.

After practice, Jackson shared his honest thoughts with the media. He didn’t hold back.

“I didn’t like it. Our guys were not ready for today,” Jackson said. “We’re used to practicing a different way. Maybe with some programs, this would have been a good start. But for us, it wasn’t enough. Today was not our best.”

Although there were brief moments of promise, the team fell short overall. Execution and focus didn’t meet the coaching staff’s standards.

“Luckily, it’s only the first day,” Jackson continued. “However, we must improve in many areas—on the field and behind the scenes. We have to clean things up. We’re used to a better product. And we’re not changing that for anyone.”

His comments make one thing clear: a culture shift is underway. Jackson expects more—and he’s not afraid to demand it.

Fortunately, the Panthers still have time to improve. The team will continue training this week, leading up to their season debut. They’ll face Texas Southern in the annual HBCU rivalry matchup. The 40th Annual Labor Day Classic will be held on August 30 at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston.

Tremaine Jackson steps in following the departure of former head coach Bubba McDowell, who led the Panthers for two seasons. Jackson brings a new vision and intensity to Prairie View A&M, aiming to elevate the program both on and off the field. Known for his defensive mindset and high standards, Jackson’s arrival signals a cultural reset focused on discipline, accountability, and a renewed commitment to championship-level performance.

In a major recruiting win for the HBCU football world, three-star running back Nicholas Tramble has committed to Prairie View A&M University.

The 5-foot-8, 165-pound speedster is from Aldine Davis High School in Houston, Texas. He announced his decision Thursday, choosing the Panthers over offers from Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State, Rice, SMU, Texas State, UNLV, and several other FBS programs. “H-Town we home baby,” Tramble wrote on social media.

Tramble is ranked the No. 120 running back in the nation and the No. 247 overall player in Texas, per 247Sports Composite. His commitment is the fourth-highest in Prairie View A&M history. That makes this a huge moment for the HBCU program.

High School Production Sets Him Apart

Tramble had a dominant junior season. He earned first-team All-District honors after leading his district in rushing yards. He finished with nearly 1,100 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, and over 1,200 all-purpose yards. On average, he posted 6.2 yards per carry and nearly 100 rushing yards per game.

In three seasons, Tramble has totaled 2,478 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns. He also has more than 3,000 all-purpose yards, averaging over 100 all-purpose yards per game every year. His breakout came early. As a freshman, he ran for 675 yards on just 65 carries, scoring 10 touchdowns. That’s 10.4 yards per carry, earning him second-team All-District honors.

A Statement for Prairie View and HBCUs

Tramble is the first big in-state commitment for new head coach Tremaine Jackson. His decision gives the Panthers a dynamic playmaker for their 2026 recruiting class.

But this commitment is bigger than football. Tramble chose an HBCU over multiple FBS schools. That sends a message. It highlights the growing strength of Black college football and its rising appeal for elite athletes.

For Prairie View A&M, this is more than a recruit. It’s a cultural win, a statement of belief, and a sign that HBCUs are here to compete.

Prairie View A&M junior Emely Reyes has earned a call-up to the El Salvador women’s national team for the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers. This marks a major step in her athletic journey and helps to shine a spotlight on HBCU women’s soccer.

Reyes is a Houston native and a civil engineering major. She plays as a defender for the PVAMU women’s soccer team, where she has consistently shown strength, discipline, and tactical awareness.

In 2022, she represented El Salvador at the U-20 level. That experience helped lay the foundation for this senior team opportunity. Now, Reyes will compete on the international stage as her country begins its World Cup qualifying campaign.

The CONCACAF qualifiers are highly competitive. Teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean will battle for a chance to earn a spot in the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup. El Salvador will start group play with high stakes and rising expectations.

During the 2024 season at PVAMU, Reyes appeared in five matches and started in four. She recorded three shots, including one on goal, while anchoring the Panthers’ back line. The Panthers finished 1-11-4 last season, good for 8th place in the 9 team HBCU conference.

Her promotion to the senior national team not only highlights her personal growth, but also reflects positively on the Prairie View soccer program. Reyes brings valuable international experience and a high level of professionalism to the squad.

She remains an active and important player for the Panthers as they look ahead to the 2025 season. With her leadership and competitive edge, PVAMU will benefit both on and off the pitch.

The university celebrates her accomplishment and looks forward to what she will achieve next—both at home and on the world stage.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M University, one of the nation’s leading HBCU institutions, is taking its commitment to academic excellence and cultural relevance to new heights with the launch of a Presidential Executive-in-Residence Program. At its helm: Dr. Mathew Knowles, the music mogul and business strategist best known for shaping the global careers of Destiny’s Child with his daughter Beyoncé.

Dr. Knowles, a celebrated architect of pop culture, will serve as the program’s inaugural Executive-in-Residence for the 2025–2026 academic year. His appointment signals more than a marquee name on campus; it reflects the institution’s growing effort to fuse classroom learning with real-world industry leadership.

Over the course of two semesters, Knowles will lead four master classes in partnership with PVAMU’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Department of Languages and Communication. Students will explore branding, media strategy, entrepreneurship, and narrative power—disciplines Knowles has mastered through decades of influence in entertainment and business.

Titles like “From Solopreneur to Entrepreneur” and “Strategic Visibility: Brand, Business, and the Power of the Narrative” speak to Knowles’ mission: teaching students not only how to build ventures, but how to shape stories that move markets and culture alike.

Knowles’ residency includes faculty development sessions to help educators integrate entrepreneurial thinking and storytelling into their curricula—ensuring his impact extends beyond the lecture hall.

The Knowles-HBCU Legacy

The Knowles family’s bond with HBCUs is more than symbolic. Beyoncé, a fierce advocate for HBCU culture, famously channeled the experience in her Homecoming performance at Coachella. She’s also backed that admiration with major investments—including her recent donation to support the HBCU band program at Texas Southern University.

Now, Mathew Knowles’ appointment at Prairie View A&M brings that connection full circle. As he steps into the classroom, he joins a growing number of cultural icons turning to HBCUs not just as alma maters or philanthropic partners—but as places to educate, innovate, and inspire the next generation of leaders.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

With over $100 million in business exits, corporate partnerships with brands like L’Oréal and Samsung, and a rare Master of Influence Award from the National Speakers Association, Knowles brings more than star power—he brings a blueprint. His residency at PVAMU marks a new chapter in how HBCUs are redefining higher education: integrating celebrity, entrepreneurship, and academic rigor to offer students access to unmatched real-world opportunities.

In many ways, Prairie View A&M’s latest move affirms what the Knowles family has always known—and what Beyoncé declared through her Coachella homage: HBCUs are not just relevant; they are revolutionary.

In response to the NCAA’s House Settlement, HBCU Prairie View A&M University is taking a bold step forward to reshape the future of its athletic department. The HBCU officially launched the Panther Athletic Fund (PAF), a new fundraising initiative designed to support over 350 student-athletes and ensure the department’s financial sustainability in a rapidly evolving landscape.

The House Settlement has redefined how college athletic departments, particularly at HBCUs, must operate. With looming NCAA revenue-sharing obligations, increased NIL demands, and higher costs for scholarships and operations, PVAMU’s Panther Athletic Fund is a proactive response. This initiative reflects the HBCU’s dedication to excellence and equitable support for student-athletes on and off the field.

“The Panther Athletic Fund marks a new era for Prairie View A&M Athletics,” said Director of Athletics Anton Goff. “Through it, Panther Nation has a direct way to impact our student-athletes and ensure PV is prepared to lead in this new landscape shaped by the House Settlement.”

Prairie View, HBCU, NCAA

The PAF features four strategic giving areas:

  • Champions Society for leadership donors ($25,000+ pledges);
  • Sport-Specific Excellence Funds to directly impact teams;
  • NIL/Revenue Share Funds to adapt to the post-House Settlement era;
  • Purple & Gold Fund, the unrestricted annual support pool.

“This isn’t just about fundraising—it’s about building the infrastructure for sustained success,” said Megan Reed, PVAMU’s Director of Development.

Prairie View A&M opted into the House vs. NCAA settlement along with the other 11 members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

The new website pvpanthers.com/paf serves as the digital home for the initiative.

For Prairie View and other HBCUs, the NCAA House Settlement isn’t just a challenge—it’s a call to action. The Panther Athletic Fund represents a model for how HBCUs can lead with innovation, purpose, and community support in this new chapter of college athletics.

Prairie View A&M softball continues to raise the bar for HBCU athletics. The Lady Panthers were named the NCAA Division I Statistical Champion for Stolen Bases Per Game for the 2024-25 season. This national title proves that Prairie View A&M is one of the fastest and most strategic teams in college softball.

This recognition further solidifies Prairie View A&M’s reputation as an HBCU powerhouse. Their aggressive style of play wasn’t just flashy; it produced results throughout the season and strengthened the pride of their HBCU community.

“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and coaching staff for this tremendous achievement,” Prairie View A&M Director of Athletics Anton Goff said in a PVAMU Athletics release. “This national recognition is a testament to their hard work and dedication.”

Under Head Coach Vernon Bland, Prairie View A&M played with fearless intensity. The Lady Panthers consistently turned singles into doubles or walks into scoring chances. Therefore, their base running forced opposing defenses to adjust every inning, showcasing the smart, aggressive approach that defines Prairie View A&M softball.

“This honor speaks volumes about the speed, instincts, and heart of our players,” Bland told PVAMU Athletics. “We emphasize aggressive, smart base running, and it’s great to see our work earn national recognition.”

HBCUs Crowd the Top Ten

Joining Prairie View A&M in the top echelon of stolen base artistry were:

  • Bethune-Cookman (3rd): 2.96 SB/G
  • Jackson State (6th): 2.74 SB/G
  • Norfolk State (8th): 2.71 SB/G
  • Grambling State (10th): 2.67 SB/G

This remarkable presence — five HBCU programs in the top 10 nationally — speaks volumes about the athleticism, coaching acumen, and game-planning taking place across these institutions. It’s also a powerful indicator of how HBCU softball continues to grow and assert itself on the national stage.

HBCU women’s basketball is getting a powerful new pairing. When new Prairie View A&M head coach Tai Dillard needed someone to help shape the future of her program, she didn’t have to look far. She reached back to a trusted former player. One who embodies toughness, leadership, and the kind of drive Dillard wants to instill at PVAMU. Enter Bria Patterson, who will join the Lady Panthers as the Director of Basketball Operations for the 2025–26 season.

This move isn’t just a hire—it’s a full-circle moment.

Dillard, a Texas basketball legend in her own right, spent nearly a decade at the University of Houston building one of the American Athletic Conference’s most competitive squads. While serving as the Cougars’ associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, she scouted and mentored standout players. Including a gritty guard from DeSoto High School named Bria Patterson.

Now, Dillard and Patterson are teaming up again in women’s basketball—this time at one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s (SWAC) most tradition-rich HBCU institutions.

From Court General to Behind-the-Scenes Leader

Patterson, who starred at Houston from 2019 to 2023, was known for doing the dirty work. She made 29 starts in her senior year and set a school record for most minutes in a single game. Logging 54 in a triple-overtime classic against East Carolina. She routinely ranked among the team’s leaders in rebounds, steals, and defensive stops, often guarding the opposing team’s best perimeter scorer.

While her box score stats were impressive—nearly 300 points and 66 steals her senior year—her true value came in her intangibles. Patterson led by example, grinded through adversity, and never backed down from a challenge. All of that will now carry over to her role at Prairie View A&M.

The Director of Basketball Operations gig is more than just logistics. It’s about setting a culture. Patterson will coordinate team travel, manage schedules, oversee day-to-day program operations, and serve as a liaison between coaches and players.

For someone who lived the student-athlete grind under Dillard’s demanding style, it’s a role tailor-made for her.

HBCU women’s basketball Prairie View A&M Bria Patterson Tai Dillard
Coach Dillard’s Texas Roots Run Deep

The hiring of Patterson also signals something deeper: Tai Dillard is building her program with loyalty and trust.

A San Antonio native and former WNBA player, Dillard is one of the most respected basketball minds in Texas. She played for legendary coach Jody Conradt at the University of Texas, where she helped lead the team to a Final Four appearance in 2003. She later played for the San Antonio Silver Stars and the Houston Comets (now known as the Houston Stealth). Her coaching stops include stints at Ole Miss, USC, UTSA, and, most recently, the University of Houston, where she became one of the most respected recruiters in the country.

At Houston, she helped guide the Cougars to multiple WNIT appearances and mentored record-setting guard Laila Blair. Dillard was also selected for the NCAA Champion Forum, a premier leadership development program for rising head coaches.

Now at Prairie View A&M, she’s not just trying to win games. She’s trying to build an HBCU program with staying power. And that starts with bringing in people who share her vision.

Building the PVAMU Blueprint

In Patterson, Dillard has someone who knows the system, understands the standards, and can help bridge the gap between past success and future dominance.

Patterson’s journey from a three-time First Team All-District selection at DeSoto High to key contributor at Houston—and now to Prairie View A&M’s operations team—embodies the values of grit and growth.

With Tai Dillard steering the ship and Bria Patterson helping run the engine room, HBCU women’s basketball just got a serious upgrade.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The HBCU community is mourning the loss of Prairie View A&M University football player Jackson Bailey, also known as ‘Jacks’, who died at the age of 22. Though he did not appear in a game for the Panthers, his presence was deeply felt within the locker room and across the campus community, according to a statement released by the university’s athletic department.

HBCU Prairie View A&M University Jackson Bailey

Bailey, a defensive lineman, joined the Prairie View A&M University football team for the 2023–24 season after transferring from Louisiana-Monroe. He began his collegiate career at Arizona, where he redshirted. Originally from DeSoto, Texas, Bailey starred at Red Oak High School and earned all-state honors in Class 5A Division I as a senior. In his standout 2020 season, he posted 64 tackles, four interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and three fumble recoveries.

Bailey chose Prairie View A&M, the only HBCU he attended, to be closer to his family. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. – Zeta Beta Chapter. Jackson Bailey was known for his brotherhood, positive energy, and deep sense of purpose. His football IQ, natural speed, and infectious personality earned him the respect of teammates and coaches alike.

God Got Me

His favorite quote, “God got me,” reflected a mindset that carried him through both life’s challenges and triumphs. He dreamed of playing in the NFL or pursuing a career in physical therapy to help others heal through sports.

Off the field, Bailey had a passion for cooking, music, and spending time with family, especially during the holidays. He also enjoyed playing video games and the piano, a lesser-known talent. Bailey often credited his mother, Debbie Bailey, as his greatest inspiration. He is also survived by his father, Bryon, and siblings Taylor and Kebron.

“Though his time at PVAMU was brief, the impact he made will resonate for years to come,” the university said. “We honor and remember Jackson ‘Jacks’ Bailey not only for his potential and promise but for the way he lived—with purpose, humor, humility, and heart.”

Prairie View A&M has made a major splash in the HBCU coaching landscape by hiring WNBA legend and Texas Tech Hall of Famer Plenette Pierson. She has joined the women’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach. The former WNBA champion brings over two decades of elite basketball experience to Prairie View A&M for the 2024-25 season.

Pierson joins the Lady Panthers after serving as associate head coach at Texas Tech, her alma mater, where she was instrumental in the team’s resurgence. During her tenure, the Lady Raiders posted back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in over a decade and reached the quarterfinals of both the Big 12 Tournament and the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT).

Known for her ability to develop post players and lead recruiting efforts, Pierson helped guide Texas Tech to key wins over top-tier programs including Virginia Tech, Arkansas, and Iowa State. Her influence helped produce All-Big 12 standouts and one of the nation’s top transfer classes.

A former No. 4 overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft, Pierson is a three-time WNBA champion and former Sixth Woman of the Year. Her move to Prairie View A&M marks a powerful new chapter for HBCU women’s basketball.

Pierson was hired by new PVAMU head coach Tia Dillard, a former standout at Texas and WNBA veteran. Dillard comes over from the University of Houston, where she helped guide the Cougars to multiple postseason runs. Known for mentoring sharpshooter Laila Blair and excelling in recruitment, Dillard’s leadership is already reshaping Prairie View’s HBCU basketball identity. Her decision to hire Pierson blends pro-level pedigree with high-level collegiate coaching insight.

Former NFL star and media personality Chad Johnson AKA “Chad Ochochinco” had another proud dad moment as his daughter graduated from an HBCU.

Johnson’s daughter Chadé K. Johnson graduated from HBCU Prairie View A&M on Saturday morning. Prominent sports media personality Bomani Jones, a Clark Atlanta University alumnus, served as the commencement speaker for the event.

In addition to getting her degree, Chadé Johnson also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. during her time at the Texas-based HBCU.

His daughter attending an HBCU has given Johnson a chance to interact with that world. Last year he was a part of the coin-toss at Prairie View during its homecoming game in addition to attending her probate on the campus. He spoke glowingly of the experience on “Nightcap” which he co-hosts with Shannon Sharpe.

Chad Johnson,NFL

“Now what I’m not going to do is — I promise this time when I talk about Prairie View — I’m not gonna cry,” Johnson said about the experience. “I’m not going to get emotional. But that is something that all people — if you go to a PWI or you go to a private school or anything of that nature, you need to experience a homecoming at some HBCU at a state near you.”

Chad Johnson is a Florida native who has previously had affiliation with Florida A&M University. He actually briefly spent time at an HBCU — Langston University in Oklahoma — briefly before being kicked off the team. He would eventually find his way to Oregon State before going to the NFL and becoming a Pro Bowl wide receiver.

Now his daughter is an official HBCU graduate.

Prairie View A&M is taking a calculated approach to roster building as it prepares for the 2025 HBCU football season. Under new head coach Tremaine Jackson, the Panthers are adding experience, depth, and size through the NCAA transfer portal, targeting players from FBS programs and Division II power Valdosta State.

The HBCU program got creative on social media with a Netflix-style reveal, announcing each transfer as a new “episode.” The creative rollout was paired with a meaningful strategy: bring in players who can contribute immediately and fit the system. Coach Jackson made national headlines in April when he announced strict guidelines for transfer portal signees.

One of the most talked-about rules: “Don’t ask me for NIL (which we do have) when PFF has you as taking less than 200 snaps on the year,” Jackson writes. It’s a message that resonates across the HBCU space, where many programs are trying to balance building competitive rosters with limited resources.

Confirmed FBS transfers include wide receivers Cam Bonner (Baylor), Trey Davis (Kansas State), and Jyziah Rockwell (Sam Houston State). The offensive line will feature Calvin McMillian, Cameron Pascal from Memphis, and RayQuan Bell from Houston. On the defensive side, Josh Williamson (Murray State) and Payton Tally (Princeton) strengthen the secondary. UTEP kicker Aidan Wilson adds special teams depth, while tight end Jerimiah Mawali joins with experience at James Madison and Valdosta State.

Linebacker Sterling Roberts, who played under Jackson last season at Valdosta State, is also transferring in. His familiarity with Jackson’s defensive system and leadership style could make him a key part of the unit from day one.

PantherFlix Presents… “Welcome to The Hill”

Prairie View A&M finished the 2023 season 6–5 overall and 5–3 in SWAC play. Although they remained in the division title race for most of the season, inconsistency on the offensive line and in the secondary limited their ability to finish strong. The 2025 transfer class directly addresses those areas.

Tremaine Jackson’s plan is clear—build a competitive roster through experienced players who have competed at the FBS level or in proven systems. With a mix of Power Five pedigree and DII championship culture, Prairie View A&M is positioning itself to push further in the SWAC and elevate its standing in HBCU football.

Prairie View, Texas – Prairie View A&M University Director of Athletics, Mr. Anton Goff, is proud to announce Tai Dillard as the new Head Coach of the HBCU Women’s Basketball Program. Her start date is May 1, 2025.

“I am excited to add Coach Dillard to the Panther Family,” exclaimed Goff. “I know her success as a former player and coach will resonate well with our current and future student-athletes. She possesses all the tools to be a great coach and develop a winning program. We are confident that she will help our student-athletes reach their highest goals, on and off the court.”

A native Texan and seasoned coach with deep roots in both collegiate and professional basketball, Dillard brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of player development and program success to the HBCU.

Dillard joins the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers following an impressive tenure at the University of Houston, where she served as Associate Head Coach from 2022 to 2024 and Recruiting Coordinator from 2016 to 2022. During her time with the Cougars, Dillard helped guide the team to multiple postseason appearances, including the WNIT in 2017, 2018, and 2021.

A key part of her success at Houston was mentoring standout student-athlete Laila Blair, who broke the program’s record for most three-pointers made, most minutes played, and most games started. Under Dillard’s guidance, Blair collected numerous accolades, including selection to the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Freshman Team, AAC Second Team, AAC First Team, and Honorable Mention honors in the Big 12 Conference. In 2024, Dillard participated in the NCAA Champion Forum, a premier professional development program for current coaches. The forum offers a unique and transformative experience, providing insight into the realities of becoming a head coach at the collegiate level.

Veteran Coach

Prior to her time at Houston, Dillard held coaching roles at the University of Mississippi (2013–2014), the University of Southern California (2012–2013), and the University of Texas at San Antonio (2007–2012). She began her coaching career at Sam Houston High School in San Antonio, Texas, serving as Head Cross Country Coach and Assistant Coach for basketball and track and field.

HBCU Prairie View A&M Tai Dillard

No stranger to elite competition, Dillard was a four-year letter winner at the University of Texas under legendary head coach Jody Conradt. She helped lead the Longhorns to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in her senior season (2003). A two-time Big 12 All-Academic honoree, Dillard started 34 games during that memorable campaign.

Following her collegiate career, Dillard played professionally for the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars (2003–2005), the Houston Stealth of the National Women’s Basketball League, and internationally in Israel with Macabbi Tel Kabir.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in Sports Leadership and Sports Studies from Texas Southern University.

Tai Dillard is married to former Texas men’s basketball standout and 2003 Final Four participant Brandon Mouton. They are the proud parents of two sons, Langston and Caden.

Note: A press conference introducing Coach Dillard at the HBCU will be held on May 2, 2025, at 1:00 pm.

Former WNBA player and University of Houston assistant Tai Dillard is expected to become the head women’s basketball coach at Texas HBCU Prairie View A&M University, according to Olivia Antilla of LivforHoops.

The reported move comes more than a month after Sandy Pugh, former head coach of Prairie View A&M University, resigned following seven seasons leading the HBCU program. Pugh led PV to an 81-114 overall record while registering only two campaigns — 2018-19 and 2022-23 — with a .500 record or better.

“As I step into the next chapter of my life, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible journey at Prairie View A&M University,” Pugh said in a statement in March. “Coaching for over 30 years — the last seven as Head Coach of the PVAMU Women’s Basketball team — has been an honor. Through victories and challenges, the resilience and dedication of this community have shaped me in ways I will forever cherish.”

Dillard comes to Prairie View after serving as an 11-year assistant coach at Houston under former Cougars coach Ronald Hughey. Prior to Houston, the San Antonio, Texas native collected experience as an assistant from stints at Mississippi, Southern California, and the University of Texas-San Antonio.

At UTSA, Dillard worked closely with the program’s recruiting efforts as well as the development of the team’s guards. Her guidance and coaching aided in the Roadrunners earning consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009, the Southland Conference Tournament championship in both seasons, as well as the team notching 20-plus wins in each of those campaigns.

Tai Dillard

Dillard played basketball collegiately at Texas from 1999 to 2003 under legendary Longhorns women’s basketball coach Jody Conradt. She helped Texas secure four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth to the women’s Final Four during her final season.

After college, Tai Dillard played for the WNBA’s San Antonio Silver Stars from 2003 to 2005, playing in 57 games. She also briefly played for the Houston Stealth of the Women’s National Basketball League and recorded international experience.

Prairie View A&M head football coach Tremaine Jackson has gone through a recruiting frenzy for the Texas HBCU this spring. One of his latest signings is a running back from Oregon.

Ellis Bynum has played the last two seasons for the Oregon Ducks football program, contributing primarily on special teams.

After redshirting his true freshman year in 2022, Bynum began to make his mark in 2023 as a redshirt freshman. He appeared in nine games, all in a special teams role, and recorded his first career tackle in a game against California on November 4. In 2024, Bynum continued to contribute to Oregon’s special teams unit, playing in five of the team’s 14 games and logging seven total snaps.

Before arriving at Oregon, Bynum was a standout at Central Catholic High School, where he was a two-year letterman and team captain as a senior. He earned second-team all-league honors in the Mt. Hood Conference and received honorable mention all-state recognition. His senior season was a showcase of his talent—rushing for 1,011 yards and 18 touchdowns on just 100 carries, averaging an impressive 10.1 yards per attempt. He also added 215 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 17 receptions, finishing with 1,216 total yards and 22 touchdowns.

In the classroom, Bynum excelled as well, maintaining a 3.7 GPA and earning honor society and honor roll recognition.

Prairie View A&M University appointed Tremaine Jackson as its new head football coach, effective January 1, 2025. Jackson brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record, having led Valdosta State University to a 30–9 record over three seasons. His 2024 team achieved a perfect 13–0 regular season and reached the NCAA Division II National Championship game. Jackson was honored as the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year.

New Prairie View A&M head coach Tremaine Jackson wasted no time laying down the law as the HBCU world turns its eyes to the spring transfer portal window. In a bold and unapologetic post on social media, Jackson outlined a set of five non-negotiable rules for any prospective player looking to join the Panthers through the portal. It was a message that quickly got the attention of the HBCU football community and beyond.

From the jump, Jackson makes it clear that he’s not here for games.

“When I follow you, there’s a 4 hour window to follow back or we done,” reads rule No. 1. The rest of the post — titled “Panther Portal Understanding” — makes it clear that professionalism, preparation, and respect are non-negotiables for any transfer looking to join the HBCU program.

Among the most talked-about rules: don’t come asking for NIL money unless you’ve put in the work. “Don’t ask me for NIL (which we do have) when PFF has you as taking less than 200 snaps on the year,” Jackson writes. It’s a message that resonates across the HBCU space, where many programs are trying to balance building competitive rosters with limited resources.

Jackson also emphasizes respect for his staff, requiring that players refer to coaches properly and not with informal greetings like “Bro.” He also makes it clear that players should get buy-in from family, girlfriends, and even pets before they take visits — not after.

The post has made waves throughout HBCU football circles as it signals a no-nonsense, structure-first approach from a coach who clearly wants to reshape the culture at Prairie View A&M.

With this message, Tremaine Jackson made one thing clear: the new era of HBCU football at PVAMU will be built on discipline, transparency, and accountability.

An HBCU baseball game between Jackson State and Prairie View A&M turned into a brawl.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Prairie View, TX. When all was said and done, nine players were suspended and each program was fined $25k by the SWAC.

It started when Prairie View A&M went up 7-6 on a walk-off double near second base. A social media video shows Davione Hull, a Jackson State left fielder, shoved a Prairie View A&M player. The two HBCU dugouts cleared and the brawl ensued. Jackson State outfielder/pitcher Arjun Huerta was show later in the video grabbing the bat of Trenton Bush, the player who hit the walk-off, and throwing it into the crowd.

Fans were asked not to leave the stands by the PA announcer:

“All fans on the field will be banned,” the announcer stated. “If you are a fan or a parent on the field, you will be banned. All players to the dugout.”

When the dust settled, a total of six Jackson State players and three from Prairie View A&M were suspended in addition to the HBCU programs themselves being fined.

The two teams finished the third game in the series on Sunday with Prairie View winning 9-5. PVAMU took the series 2-1 after JSU took the opener on Friday 12-0.

Deion Sanders has been an innovator in college football since he hopped on the HBCU scene in 2020. The Colorado head coach announced that his program’s spring game will be televised and that he’s hoping to invite an opponent.

“The Spring Game will be televised on ESPN2 … on the 19th,” Sanders said. “We got to sell this thing out and pack this thing because the way the trend is going, you never know if this is going to be the last spring game. I don’t believe in that. I don’t really want to condone that. I would like to play in the spring. Actually, I (would) like to play against another team in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now.”

At least one current HBCU coach is interested in taking Deion Sanders up on his idea. First-year head coach Tremaine Jackson of Prairie View A&M isn’t running from the potential challenge.

Tremaine Jackson, Prairie View A&M, HBCU

“I ain’t hard to find!!” Jackson said, tweeting the words Sanders has often said in recent years. “Would love to be apart!!”

Jackson is in his first season as a head coach at the HBCU after spending the past three seasons at D2 power Valdosta State. He took the team to the national championship game last fall before falling short and coming over to the FCS program.

“To have a competitive (game) against your own guys kind of gets monotonous. You really can’t tell the level of your guys because, you know, it’s the same old, same way,” Sanders said. “Everybody kind of know each other. Towards the end, I would like to style it like the pros. I would like to practice against someone for a few days, then you have the spring game and I think the public will be satisfied with that tremendously. I think it’s a tremendous idea. I’ve told those personnel who should understand that it’s a tremendous idea.”

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Sandy Pugh has resigned as the head coach of Prairie View A&M University’s (PVAMU) women’s basketball program, concluding a notable tenure that began in May 2018. Her departure comes after the Panthers’ upset victory in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament, where the No. 10-seeded Panthers defeated the No. 7-seeded Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in a thrilling opening night game of the HBCU conference tourney.

SWAC Tournament Upset

On March 11, 2025, the 10th-seeded PVAMU Panthers faced Bethune-Cookman in the opening round of the SWAC tournament at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, Georgia. The game was a thrilling contest that extended into overtime. The Panthers’ defense was particularly effective, holding the Wildcats to a mere 10.5% shooting from beyond the arc and 30.9% overall from the field. Nyam Thornton led PVAMU with 16 points, while Cj Wilson contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Wilson’s crucial basket with 3:19 remaining in overtime gave the Panthers a lead they maintained until the final buzzer, securing a 57-52 victory.

Coaching Career and Achievements

Sandy Pugh’s HBCU coaching career spans over thirty years and is highlighted by her accomplishments and contributions to women’s basketball, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Before joining PVAMU, Pugh served as the HBCU women’s basketball head coach at Southern University for 18 seasons. During her tenure with the Jaguars, she led the team to seven SWAC titles and four SWAC tournament championships. Under her guidance, Southern University made multiple appearances in the NCAA tournament and the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (NIT), showcasing her ability to elevate the program’s competitive stature.

In May 2018, Pugh took over the Prairie View A&M University program, bringing her championship-winning pedigree to the Panthers. In her inaugural season (2018-2019), she led the team to a 17-14 overall record and secured the No. 2 seed in the SWAC tournament, marking one of the program’s best seasons since 2012-2013.

Through victories and challenges, the resilience and dedication of this community have shaped me in ways I will forever cherish. The post Substance over spectacle: HBCU HC rips PWI recruiting tactics appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
In the ultra-competitive world of college football recruiting, contrasting philosophies can often emerge, especially between HBCU football programs and their Power Four Conference counterparts. An example of the difference in recruiting tactics between HBCUs and PWIs ([redominantly white institutions) involves recently hired Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) head football coach Tremaine Jackson, who recently critiqued the recruiting tactics of big-time PWI schools, bringing up LSU’s head coach Brian Kelly and his viral internet moment from 2022.

In a candid discussion about his recruiting philosophy with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Coach Jackson emphasized authenticity and straightforwardness. He stated, “We don’t wine and dine guys in recruiting. We give it to you straight up because I don’t have time to de-recruit you.” Jackson further distinguished his approach by referencing a viral video in 2022 where Brian Kelly was seen dancing with a recruit who ultimately committed to Alabama. Jackson remarked, “You’re not going to catch me on Twitter with my hat backward and dancing on the 360 with guys. Brian Kelly did that, and he ain’t won a championship yet.”

This critique underscores a broader conversation about the authenticity and effectiveness of recruiting methods. Jackson’s commitment to a no-nonsense approach reflects his desire to build genuine relationships with recruits, focusing on substance over spectacle. This philosophy is deeply rooted in the values of many HBCU programs, where personal development and cultural affirmation are paramount.

Who is Tremaine Jackson

Born on August 30, 1983, in Houston, Texas, Tremaine Jackson played collegiate football as a defensive tackle at Texas Southern and later at Louisiana-Monroe.

His coaching career began in 2006 at Texas A&M–Kingsville, followed by positions at Trinity Valley Community College and his alma mater, Texas Southern University. Jackson further honed his coaching acumen with roles at Evangel University, the University of Sioux Falls—where he served as defensive coordinator—Abilene Christian University, and Texas State University.

In 2020, Jackson accepted the head coaching position at Colorado Mesa University, leading the team until 2021. He then transitioned to Valdosta State University in 2022, where he maintained the Blazer’s status as a Division II football powerhouse, with an impressive 13-0 season and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2024.

His accomplishments at Valdosta State earned him the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year award.

HBCU Tremaine Jackson Prairie View A&M

In December 2024, Tremaine Jackson was appointed as the head football coach at Prairie View A&M University. His return to an HBCU setting is particularly meaningful, reflecting a full-circle moment from his days as a Texas Southern player to leading a prominent HBCU football program. Jackson’s vision for PVAMU centers on fostering a culture of discipline, obedience, and grit—a philosophy he encapsulates with the acronym ‘DOG.’ He aims to cultivate a program that excels not only on the field but also in academic achievement and community engagement.

Coach Jackson’s emphasis on straightforward recruiting and his critique of more flamboyant tactics resonate within the HBCU community, where authenticity and cultural integrity are highly valued. His leadership at Prairie View A&M is anticipated to reinforce these principles, contributing to the rich legacy and continued prominence of HBCU football programs.

STAFFORD, Texas – North American University (NAU) has announced the discontinuation of its football program, a move that will impact Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU that had scheduled NAU as its homecoming opponent for the 2025 season. The decision, approved by NAU’s Board of Trustees, signals a shift in the university’s focus toward other areas of institutional growth.

“This was a difficult decision, backed by the Board of Trustees, that aims to direct investment to the things that make North American University exceptional,” said NAU Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Kenneth Apande. “Our goal is to still compete in the eight NAIA and USCAA sports that will remain an integral part of the NAU experience.”

Prairie View A&M, HBCU Gameday, North American University

NAU, which competed in the Sooner Athletic Conference alongside HBCUs Langston University and Texas College, faced challenges in gaining full recognition within the NAIA. The Stallions posted an 8-32 overall record and a 2-14 mark in conference play. Despite its struggles, the program provided student-athletes an opportunity to compete at the collegiate level.

The sudden shutdown of NAU’s football program means Prairie View A&M, one of the most tradition-rich HBCUs in the country, will now have to find a replacement opponent for its 2025 homecoming. Homecoming games at HBCUs are not just about football but serve as major cultural and economic events, drawing thousands of alumni, students, and fans to campus. Finding a suitable replacement will be a top priority for Prairie View A&M’s athletic department.

NAU expressed gratitude to the players, coaches, and supporters who helped shape the program’s legacy. Meanwhile, HBCU football fans will be watching closely to see how Prairie View A&M adjusts its homecoming plans in light of this unexpected development.

Travis Scott debuted his new single “4×4” on Monday, performing it live at the College Football National Championship game. On Friday he dropped the music video to the song which prominently features the Prairie View A&M marching band. The song itself however contains a sample from an entirely different HBCU marching band. According to whosampled.com, the band melody that appears at the beginning and throughout the song is a sample from the Aristocrat of Bands at Tennessee State University.

The sample was reportedly taken from a 2016 performance from the AOB performing “Say Sum” by Migos. The video of the performance that was referenced was posted to YouTube on Sept. 11, 2016 by HBCUbands.com, a day after the Southern Heritage Classic. The SHC is traditionally one of the premiere HBCU football classics. It would appear that the performance was part of the ‘fifth quarter’ showdown between Jackson State and Tennessee State after the game.

Several users flocked to the comments section to discuss the performance being sampled in the song, which can be heard at the 1:17 mark of the performance.

A Fever Dream with HBCU flavor

In the music video, released on Friday, Scott uses “The Marching Storm” from Prairie View A&M. Scott grew up in Houston which is 52 miles away from the city of Prairie View.

“You might want to head on over to TravisScott.com right now and check this out! You may see somebody you know…. #4×4,” the band posted on its official Instagram account.

The video, directed by Gabriel Moses, is best described as a fever dream of visuals featuring Travis Scott. In addition to performing his lyrics in front of the HBCU band from the SWAC, Scott appears in a rodeo, as a professional wrestler, and in an OJ Simpson-style police chase. The video ends with a monkey listening to the music with headphones on as if the entire video was the primate’s thoughts.

The song debuted at No. 4 on the US Spotify Chart with 1,495,236 American streams on Friday, January 24.

Prairie View, Texas – Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) officially introduced Tremaine Jackson as the new head coach of the Panthers’ HBCU football team during a press conference held today. Jackson, who arrives with a proven track record of success, is eager to lead the program into a new era of excellence both on and off the field.

Jackson comes to PVAMU after an impressive tenure at Valdosta State University, where he served as head coach from 2022 to 2024. Over his three seasons with the Blazers, Jackson posted an outstanding 30-9 record, guiding the team to an undefeated regular season in 2024 and an appearance in the NCAA Division II National Championship game. His achievements earned him the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year honor, further solidifying his reputation as one of college football’s top emerging coaches.

Before his time at Valdosta State, Tremaine Jackson held head coaching duties at Colorado Mesa University and key defensive roles at Texas State and Abilene Christian University. As a defensive line coach at Texas State and defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian, Jackson earned recognition for his strategic acumen and his ability to improve his teams’ defensive units.

Anton Goff, PVAMU’s Athletic Director, opened the press conference, welcoming everyone and expressing his excitement about Jackson’s appointment. Goff, who led the search for a new HBCU football head coach, expressed confidence in Jackson’s ability to take the program to new heights. Goff made it clear that he wanted a coach with a deep passion for football and a competitive drive. “There was a multitude of different characteristics I was looking for,” Goff said. “A leader, someone with football experience, and someone with success prior to coming to PVAMU.”

Goff also emphasized that Jackson’s values are closely aligned with those of the athletic department and the university. “He’s someone who aligned with my values, professional values, and the athletic department’s values,” Goff continued. “His values and how he wanted to run the program and the vision for the athletic department and the university are similar to mine.”

When discussing the qualities that were essential for the role, Goff added, “I wanted a football guy—someone who lives, breathes, and understands football. Tremaine is a football guy.”

After Goff’s opening remarks, Jackson took the stand to address the crowd, laying out his vision for the future of Prairie View A&M football. “First of all, I want to thank God. Without God, none of this is possible, especially with the career that we have,” Jackson said. “Football is a ministry for me. Here’s what we’re bringing—we’re going to bring a program that focuses on careers. We’re going to be great in the classroom. We’re going to be elite there because we’re going to match the elite education that Prairie View offers.”

HBCU Prairie View A&M Tremaine Jackson

Tremaine Jackson emphasized the importance of community involvement, noting that the team would work to strengthen its ties with the local areas. “We’re going to be great in the community and be involved in Waller and Harris County,” Jackson said. “We have to support them as they support us.”

In terms of competitiveness, Jackson is setting high expectations for his HBCU. “We’re going to be prepared to be at a high level. To be competitive not only in the SWAC but nationally and across the country. We’re not here to only be an elite SWAC school. We’re here to be a premier FCS school, in the top 5 of the top 25,” Jackson declared.

He also made it clear that the team’s mentality would be a key factor in their success. “We’re Panthers, but we’re going to have a dog mentality,” Jackson said. “We’re going to have discipline. We’re going to be obedient. We’re going to have a lot of grit.”

Jackson outlined a five-step plan that will guide the team through the coming seasons. “There’s a five-step plan. We have to win game one. We’re going to showcase our program to show we don’t only play Black college football; we play football,” Jackson said. “We want to win our non-conference, we want to win the SWAC West, and we want to host the SWAC Championship. It’s our time to host.”

Tremaine Jackson also reflected on the bigger goals for the HBCU football program. “It’s time. It’s time for us to win the SWAC. It’s time for us to play in the Celebration Bowl. It’s time for us to win the national championship, whether it’s the Celebration Bowl or the NCAA Championship. It’s just time,” Jackson declared with determination.

With Jackson’s proven leadership and clear vision, his appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Prairie View A&M football. Fans, alumni, and the community are eager to see how Jackson’s competitive drive and leadership will translate into success on the field.

As the HBCU heads into the offseason, Jackson will begin evaluating talent, recruiting new players, and preparing for the upcoming season.

“We believe football is a life-changing game,” Jackson continued. “We will teach and train our players to be positive motivators to the world using the game of football. That’s our mission statement.”

Former HBCU star and current Atlanta Falcons special teamer KhaDarel Hodge is headed to the Pro Bowl.

The former Prairie View A&M wide receiver was chosen to the Pro Bowl for his special teams work.

Hodge was recently named NFC Special Teams Player of The Week after blocking one punt and tipping another against the Las Vegas Raiders.

“Hodge works his tail off,” Atlanta Falcons punter Bradley Pinion said Dec. 16. “Phenomenal teammate. Phenomenal gunner. Phenomenal wide receiver. I mean, he’s an all-around good guy.”

Khadarel Hodge, Atlanta Falcons, HBCU, NFL

Hodge has taken a long route to earn his Pro Bowl selection. He caught 48 passes as a senior at the FCS HBCU as a senior before going undrafted.

Hodge’s NFL career began when he was signed by the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He later had stints with the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, where his special teams contributions and limited but impactful offensive appearances stood out. For instance, during his time with the Detroit Lions, he had a standout game in 2021 where he posted career-high numbers, catching five passes for 76 yards in a game against Seattle, showing his potential as a reliable target.

KhaDarel Hodge signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2022, continuing to contribute primarily as a special teams player, but also providing valuable depth at the wide receiver position. Over the years, his ability to make key plays when called upon, such as critical catches and tackles, has kept him relevant in a highly competitive league.

Earlier this season Hodge caught a 45 yard touchdown pass that would prove to be the game-winner as the Atlanta Falcons beat their NFC South rival 36-30 in overtime.

Joining Prairie View A&M fresh off being named AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year, Jackson served as head coach of the Valdosta State University Blazers’ football team from 2022-24, amassing an overall record of 30-9 in his three seasons.

He guided the Blazers to an undefeated regular season in 2024 en route to the NCAA Division II National Championship game.

In his second year with Valdosta State, Jackson led them to the Gulf South Conference championship, becoming the first Black coach in conference history to win the title, with the team ranked in the top 15 nationally in passing offense, first downs, completion percentage, passing efficiency, net punting, and fumbles recovered. Additionally, the team achieved the highest grade point average in program history.

Before taking over Valdosta’s program, Jackson was head coach for the Colorado Mesa Mavericks; defensive line coach at Texas State, and a defensive coordinator at Abilene Christian. He also spent time as assistant head coach at the University of Sioux Falls, helping lead the Cougars to a combined 32-5 record in four seasons.

Jackson began his coaching career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, as the Javelinas’ defensive line coach. He served as defensive coordinator at Houston, TX HBCU Texas Southern University from 2008-2011 helping that team win the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title. Jackson also had stops at Trinity Valley Community College and Evangel University.

PVAMU athletic director, Anton Goff expressed his enthusiasm for the arrival of Coach Jackson, stating, “Coach Tremaine Jackson is a natural fit for Prairie View and for what we want to see our program become. His experience, leadership, and dedication to student-athlete success align perfectly with our university’s values and goals. We expect excellence and we’re very confident that Coach Jackson will deliver. We’re looking forward to the positive impact he will have on our football program and the entire Prairie View community.”

Coach Jackson, shared his excitement in joining PVAMU, saying, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next head coach at Prairie View. In our program, we strive to build champions, both on and off the field, and that’s something I truly believe can be accomplished…I’m excited to come home and have our team be an active part of the community.”

Jackson added, “I want to thank President Tomikia P. LeGrande and Director of Athletics Anton Goff for their belief in me to lead the Panthers. Aligning athletics with the campus culture of excellence is something that is extremely important to me, and I feel confident that can be accomplished with their leadership and vision. I am eager to get to work.”

Tremaine Jackson, a hot name in several FCS HBCU football coaching searches, has coached his last game at Valdosta State and is headed to Prairie View A&M.

Jackson said he told his players he had coached his final game at the school following its 49-14 loss to Ferris State in the NCAA Division II national title game. He has been reported as a candidate at both Prairie View A&M and Alabama A&M — both HBCUs that compete in the SWAC. Valdosta State tweeted a post announcing his move.

Valdosta State, a four-time national champion, went 30-9 under Jackson’s tutelage since his hire ahead of the 2022 season.

Former HBCU Player turned coach, Valdosta State, Tremaine Jackson

In year two at the helm, Jackson led Valdosta State to the Gulf South Conference championship, becoming the first black coach in conference history to win the title, and was the only non-HBCU black coach to win a conference championship in 2023. The Blazers closed out the regular season with a =10-1 record, Jackson’s first 10-win season as a head coach, which was capped off with a 58-28 victory over West Georgia in the final installment of the Peach Basket.

Before taking over in Valdosta, Tremaine Jackson spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons leading the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. During his tenure in Grand Junction, Jackson went 10-3 in his two seasons, including an 8-2 mark in 2021, highlighted by a thrilling 26-21 victory over then-No. 3-ranked Colorado School of Mines.

Jackson played on the defensive line at Texas Southern for two years after transferring from the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He is a 2006 graduate of the University of Houston, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.

He then spent four seasons at TSU, helping the Tigers win a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title in 2010 as the program led the country (FCS) in total defense, sacks and tackles for loss. They also led the country in total defense in 2011 in his lone season as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator.

Prairie View A&M men’s basketball lost to Loyola Marymount in the most dramatic way possible on Saturday night. In a play that was more spectacular than Grant Hill feeding Christian Laettner, but not nearly the same stakes, the Panthers fell 76-75 on a reverse layup at the buzzer in Los Angeles.

You can see the amazing play here.

Prairie View was leading 75-74 with 2.8 seconds left when LMU managed to get the ball all the way up the court for the winning shot. The Lions, with no timeouts remaining, threw a three-quarter court heave that Aaron McBride caught and immediately passed in mid-air to Will Johnston. With the Panther defense back pedaling, Johnston drove in for the game-winning reverse layup for the win.

The game featured 12 ties and 10 lead changes, keeping the 769 spectators on the edge of their seats.

First Half: Trading Blows

The game began with both teams testing each other’s defenses. The first half ended in a 32-32 deadlock, as LMU relied on Johnston’s sharpshooting and Jevon Porter’s rebounding presence, while Prairie View’s Nick Anderson carried his squad with relentless drives to the basket.

Second Half: A Game of Runs

Loyola Marymount surged ahead early in the second half with Caleb Stone-Carrawell and Aaron McBride combining for key buckets. Prairie View responded with a balanced attack led by Anderson and Tanahj Pettway, narrowing the deficit. The Panthers’ near-perfect free-throw shooting (22-of-25) kept them within striking distance.

Final Moments: High Drama

With just under 30 seconds left, Prairie View’s Pettway sank two critical free throws to give the Panthers a 75-74 lead. That’s when Johnston sealed the Lions’ victory with the late game heroics.

Key Performers

  • LMU:
    • Will Johnston: 23 points, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, and the game-winner.
    • Caleb Stone-Carrawell: 17 points, 2 assists.
    • Jevon Porter: 11 points, 12 rebounds, and pivotal defensive stops.
  • Prairie View:
    • Nick Anderson: 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, 4 rebounds.
    • Tanahj Pettway: 18 points, 5 assists, and ice-cold free throws under pressure.
    • Marcel Bryant: 8 points, including key second-half contributions.

By the Numbers

LMU shot 48.1% from the field, buoyed by 36.4% shooting from beyond the arc, while Prairie View’s 49% shooting and aggressive drives led to a free-throw advantage. LMU dominated the boards with a 34-20 rebounding edge, while Prairie View capitalized on turnovers, converting them into 25 points.

The first Division I HBCU football coaching search of the season is officially underway at Prairie View A&M as a former NFL defensive back’s time has run out.

Bubba McDowell has parted ways with Prairie View A&M, relieving him of his head coaching duties after three years at the helm. The news was first reported by Football Scoop and later confirmed by the school.

PVAMU athletic director Anton Goff thanked McDowell for his leadership and mentoring of the university’s student-athletes over the past three seasons in the statement.

Bubba McDowell, NFL, Houston Oilers
Bubba McDowell was an NFL star before going on to coach in the HBCU ranks.

“Coach McDowell’s commitment to helping our student-athletes succeed in life both personally and professionally is admirable and a true reflection of his character.”

McDowell went 17-17 in his three seasons, including a SWAC West title during the 2023 season. PVAMU went 5-7 during the 2024 season — its worst record under McDowell.

The former University of Miami star and later NFL Pro Bowler with the Houston Oilers was a long-time assistant at the Texas-based HBCU prior to taking over following the departure of Eric Dooley to take over Southern University.

The University’s priority will be identifying a head coach who has the vision and leadership skills to move the program into the upper echelon of SWAC and FCS football, according to its statement.

The recent altercation between Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) has drawn significant attention within the HBCU community, sparking discussions on sportsmanship and the responsibility of athletic programs. The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) announced disciplinary actions following the postgame incident on November 9, citing both institutions for violations of the league’s ethics code.

After a thorough investigation, SWAC determined that both HBCU programs exhibited unsportsmanlike conduct, leading to suspensions for one player from each team who participated in the altercation. The SWAC office also imposed a $25,000 fine on each university, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining a high standard of sportsmanship across all member institutions. In its official statement, the conference emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on unsportsmanlike behavior, underscoring the importance of promoting positive competition within HBCU athletics.

Prairie View, FAMU, HBCU Gameday

Prairie View A&M Athletic Director Anton Goff expressed disappointment over the incident, describing it as uncharacteristic of PVAMU’s values. “Sportsmanship is a cornerstone of our program,” Goff stated, adding that the university respects the SWAC’s decision and remains committed to fostering respect and accountability within its team. FAMU’s Athletic Director Angela Suggs echoed a similar sentiment, noting that Florida A&M upholds standards of sportsmanship and is working closely with SWAC to address the matter.

The fallout from the altercation has sparked reflection within the HBCU sports community, emphasizing the need for a continued focus on discipline and respect among players and institutions. Both schools, with their rich histories and passionate fanbases, are aiming to turn this incident into a learning moment that aligns with the core values of HBCU sportsmanship. The SWAC’s response reaffirms its dedication to providing guidance and promoting a culture of respect in every athletic contest.

PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – Prairie View A&M University racked up a convincing 31-12 HBCU football victory against Florida A&M University (FAMU) in a pivotal SWAC showdown on November 9, 2024, at Panther Stadium at Blackshear Field in Texas. The Panthers enhanced their season’s record to 5-5, riding high on a wave of strategic plays and standout performances, particularly in the second half.

Statistics 1 2 3 4 OT Total

How It Happened

The game kicked off under sunny skies with the Panthers swiftly establishing dominance. By halftime, Prairie View had carved out a 17-3 lead over the Rattlers, setting the stage for a robust second-half performance. Key contributors included James Burns, Freddie Byrd III, and Lamagea McDowell, who combined for all four of Prairie View’s touchdowns. Burns caught a spectacular 70-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Johnson, while Byrd III turned a critical interception into a touchdown. McDowell sealed the victory with two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter of the HBCU football contest.

The Rattlers’ offense faced adversity early when starting quarterback Daniel Richardson left the game in the first quarter due to injury after completing 8 of 13 passes for 58 yards.

Chase Bingmon paced the Panthers rushing attack by accumulating 68 yards throughout the game, averaging 9.7 yards per carry. Lamagea McDowell also added 43 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.

Jaden Johnson’s most prolific target in the ballgame was James Burns, who caught five passes for 117 yards and one score.

Kevin Davis paced the Prairie View defensive effort, totaling six tackles, one interception, and one recovered fumble. Chester Geffrard added three tackles, 2.0 TFL, and two sacks and Freddie Byrd III had three tackles and one interception in the win.

The Panthers won the turnover battle in Saturday’s game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with Prairie View A&M turning those takeaways into seven points.

Defensively, Prairie View held up fairly well against the Florida A&M rushing attack, holding the Rattlers to 140 yards on the ground. In part because of that stellar defense, Prairie View A&M runners out-gained their FAMU counterparts 151-140. The Panthers badgered the FAMU passing attack all game long, piling up five sacks and grabbing two interceptions.

Prairie View took a 3-0 lead over FAMU after scoring the game’s first points on the opening drive of the game. Another Panthers score then extended the lead to 10-0.

Florida A&M then grabbed a 12-17 lead, but Prairie View A&M got on the scoreboard again at the 13:22 left mark in the fourth quarter with a two-yard touchdown run to jump back in front 24-12. The Panthers continued to expand their advantage, scoring again to go on top 31-12. Neither team scored again in the game.

Former NFL star and larger-than-life personality Chad Johnson, AKA Ochocinco, has always had and affinity for HBCUs.

In previous episodes of “Nightcap” — a show he co-stars with Savannah State alumnus Shannon Sharpe, Johnson stated he was looking to get the HBCU homecoming experience.

Sharpe, who had playfully chided Johnson previously about being too old to go to a homecoming, noticed Johnson had on a Prairie View A&M shirt on Saturday night’s episode. Johnson got a chance to speak about his experience at Prairie View A&M homecoming.

“I went to Prairie View’s homecoming. I did the coin toss today. Big thank you to the athletic department and staff and everyone that’s a part of the Prairie View family — alumni, current students and athletes man. Unc — Unbelievable, unbelievable atmosphere. Which is why I’m jealous of you that you had the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be at an HBCU.”

Chad Johnson,
Chad Johnson earlier this season said that FAMU could beat Florida State.

Johnson has a daughter who currently attends Prairie View A&M.

“Now what I’m not going to do is — I promise this time when I talk about Prairie View — I’m not gonna cry,” Johnson continued. “I’m not going to get emotional. But that is something that all people — if you go to a PWI or you go to a private school or anything of that nature, you need to experience a homecoming at some HBCU at a state near you.”

Johnson is a Florida native who has previously had affiliation with Florida A&M University. He actually sent time at an HBCU — Langston University in Oklahoma — briefly before being kicked off the team. He would eventually find his way to Oregon State before going to the NFL and becoming a Pro Bowl wide receiver.

Clearly, though, the HBCU experience holds a special place in Johnson’s heart.

“I don’t even know what to say right now. It’s so surreal. God is real. That’s all I could say. I prayed for this — I prayed for this every week. Just give me the opp (opportunity) and take advantage of the opp(ortunity). And that’s what I did. I really don’t know what to say. I’m still soaking it in right now.”

Hodge, who plays primarily on special teams, was called in the game after an injury to Drake London.

“I knew I had to step in. Five (London’s number) went down. Hell of a player. I knew I had to step in for my brother — for my team,” Hodge said. “I gotta do what I need to do, take advantage of my opportunity. This game is a game of opportunity and I made sure I took advantage of it and Kirk (Cousins) trusted me, the team trusted me. God was on my side, I just did what I had to do.”

Khadarel Hodge, Prairie View A&M, HBCU
Prairie View A&M’s KhaDarel Hodge is one of the most tenured offensive players from an HBCU in the NFL today.

Hodge caught 48 passes as a senior at Prairie View A&M before beginning his pro career, which is currently one of the longest on the offensive side of the ball for any HBCU player.

His two catches on Thursday night were his first of the season, but he may be getting the ball coming his way more often after Thursday night’s performance.

The game was evenly matched during regulation, with Grambling tying it 24-24 in the final minute on a touchdown pass from Myles Crawley to Jalen Johnson. With regulation unable to settle the game, the HBCU battle moved into overtime, where both teams showcased resilience.

In the first overtime, Grambling struck first with a 16-yard touchdown run by Darnell Talbert, but Prairie View responded with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Jaden Johnson to Shemar Savage, keeping the game tied. Both teams exchanged field goals in the second overtime, pushing the game into a third extra period.

Thirty-five years ago, current HBCU football coaches Bubba McDowell and Cris Dishman were cornerstones of the NFL franchise formerly known as the Houston Oilers.

Now the the two former All-Pro defensive backs are head coaches at rival HBCU institutions in the Houston area.

Dishman will be making his college head coaching debut for Texas Southern in Saturday night’s game at Prairie View A&M. He was hired to take over the Houston-based HBCU in January.

Chris Dishman, Houston Oilers, NFL, HBCU Gameday
Former NFL All-Pro Cris Dishman is set to make his coaching debut on Aug. 31.

“Bubba and I are always going to remain friends, no matter what the outcome of this game is,” Dishman said on Monday’s SWAC football coaches call. “Coach McDowell has been very instrumental in me having this job, so I could never see us not being friends.”

McDowell is headed into his third season as head coach at Prairie View A&M University.

“We’ve got two brothers who love each other, but this game is not about Cris Dishman or Bubba McDowell; it’s about Texas Southern and Prairie View and the product we need to put out there on the field come Saturday night,” said McDowell, who played safety in the Oilers backfield behind Dishman, who was a cornerback.

After spending his time as an assistant coach, McDowell has led his program to a 12-11 record in those two seasons, including a SWAC West title in 2024. Dishman will be looking to resurrect a Texas Southern program that hasn’t produced a winning season in over a decade. The two remain close, despite now being on opposite sides of the Texas HBCU football rivalry.

“It’s fun to have him in the SWAC right now. We talk every other week just to stay in contact and catch up with each other,” McDowell said. “If he’s got any questions about how things are run in the SWAC, I’m always willing to share with my brother. I know he’s going to have these guys going, put his stamp on the program and have these guys running free and playing good football pretty soon.”

Quinton Bell is listed at the top of the depth chart as an outside linebacker for the game. Bell played his college football at HBCU Prairie View A&M University.

Quinton Bell’s journey at Prairie View A&M University is a testament to his adaptability and athleticism. Originally playing as a wide receiver, Bell transitioned to defensive end in his senior year, where he emerged as a standout in the SWAC. His exceptional speed and pass-rushing abilities caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading to his selection by the Oakland Raiders in the 7th round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Afterward, he continued his NFL journey with the Atlanta Falcons, further solidifying his place in the league as a versatile and dedicated player. He signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2023 and now he looks like he will have a spot to gain significant playing time.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M University student-athlete Myles McHaney IV ’24 recently earned a master’s degree in juvenile justice. As the first Agletics ambassador, the HBCU alumnus is serious about his faith, fitness, and football. His demeanor, achievements, and future goals made him an obvious choice to represent the new Agletics initiative at PVAMU, a partnership between the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources and the PVAMU Athletics program.

Hailing from Michigan, McHaney came to Texas with one goal: to play football at a Division I HBCU. He earned his undergraduate degree while playing football at Upper Iowa University, majoring in criminal justice. McHaney aims to give back to the PVAMU community, and serving as an Agletics ambassador is his first step. “Athletic Director Anton Goff, Coaches Bubba McDowell, Alvin Fosselman III, and Marlon Watson have all been great. I would not have been able to come here and play the game I love without their support,” said Myles McHaney IV.

As a leader in nutrition programs such as Dietetics and Wellness in Houston (WIH), CAFNR has a mission to serve local communities such as Waller County (where PVAMU is located) and others across Texas. Through various levels of outreach and education, Agletics is where agriculture meets athletics to bring CAFNR research and nutrition support directly to student-athletes to show the correlation between intake and performance. As a gateway for student-athletes to pursue studies in agriculture and nutrition, Agletics combines practical knowledge with scientific research to enhance student-athletes’ overall athletic performance in college and contribute to post-graduate success.

HBCU Prairie View A&M Myles McHaney IV Agletics

Agletics is a multi-faceted collaboration that will soon incorporate precision nutrition, a cutting-edge area of research that will increase awareness and enhance athletic performance, attracting HBCU students from other majors to participate in cross-disciplinary research in a high-earning field. McHaney is excited to be a part of this initiative, sharing his daily regimen of drinking lemon water with his teammates through “Motivational Monday with Myles” reels on social media. In the future, McHaney may return to PVAMU, using his degrees to support the College of Juvenile Justice through CAFNR’s WIH programs. WIH provides evidence-based research programs across six counties, including Waller.

The launch of Agletics highlights a new master’s degree in nutrition science, the second new CAFNR graduate program launched within the past two years. The new MS in Nutrition will allow undergraduate nutrition students to seamlessly transition into graduate studies, participating in research with our student-athletes.

CAFNR presented Agletics as part of the Prairie View A&M University Football Mega Camp on May 31, providing participants with hydration and nutrition support and education. In addition to @pvamucafnr’s social media features, Agletics will be active this summer across the PVAMU campus and beyond.

Former SEC commit and University of Houston football player Lucas Coley is headed to an HBCU close to home.

The former four-star quarterback from San Antonio has committed to Prairie View A&M, according to his social media.

Coley played his high school ball at Cornerstone Christian where he threw for better than 1,300 yards in ten games while tossing 13 touchdowns and one interception as a senior in 2020. Also adept at using his feet, Coley rushed for nearly 500 yards and 11 scores as a senior. He accounted for over 3,000 yards of total offense and 30 touchdowns in his junior season in 2019.

Houston, SEC, Lucas Coley

Lucas Coley was ranked as a four-star by ESPN, while receiving a three-star rating from 247Sports. ESPN had him rated as the ninth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 class. He had nearly three dozen offers from schools in the ACC, Big Ten and SEC. He received offers from Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Yale, and Vanderbilt.

He ultimately chose to commit to Arkansas, where he was an early enrollee in Jan. 2021. He spent one season in the SEC school before transferring to Houston. He appeared in two games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, appearing in three games. Coley appeared in just one game in 2023, playing a handful of snaps on punt return.

Now he will look to take the reins of the SWAC West champions, who thought they had an answer at quarterback earlier this year with Clifton McDowell.

The NCAA transfer portal winds appear to have blown in Clifton McDowell, a talented quarterback looking for his sixth school.
Former Montana quarterback Clifton McDowell has committed to coming to play at Prairie View A&M, according to HBCU Legends. Reporter Terrance Harris of the Houston Defender reported that McDowell was in attendance for spring practice and head coach Bubba McDowell confirmed that he will be enrolled by the summer.

‘”Jeez, he looks very solid,’ McDowell told HBCU Legends. “We will get him in here by June, enroll him, and work with all the quarterbacks.”

The Spring, TX native started his career in 2019 at Louisiana. He spent a pair of seasons there before hitting the NCAA transfer portal and going the JUCO route (Kilgore College) and then bounced to the FCS at Central Arkansas. He moved on to Montana where he got consistent playing time for the first time in his career and made the most of it.

McDowell completed 160 of 274 pass attempts for 2,026 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns against four interceptions. He also used his feet as well, rushing or 753 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. He was named Big Sky Newcomer of the Year for the 2023 season. But he hit the transfer portal again, landing at Temple. He was there for just two weeks before re-entering the NCAA Transfer portal.

HBCU programs are well aware of his talent, as schools like Southern, Norfolk State, Delaware State and Savannah State offered McDowell in the past.

Prairie View A&M is the reigning SWAC West champion, battling Florida A&M for the SWAC title back in December after finishing 7-4 last season. It is looking for a replacement for Trazon Connelly, and it appears to have found a good one in McDowell.

PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 22, 2024) — The Portland Trail Blazers are teaming up with Alaska Airlines to transform this year’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) to the Pros Night into an entire weekend celebration of the HBCU experience. Members of the famous Prairie View A&M (Prairie View, Texas) Marching Storm Band, led by Director of Bands Dr. Timmey Zachery, will fly to Portland, courtesy of Alaska Airlines, for a weekend of community interaction, celebration, and education. The weekend will conclude with the annual HBCU to the Pros game on February 25 when the Trail Blazers take on the Charlotte Hornets.

In alignment with the NBA, the Trail Blazers prioritize highlighting the traditions and impact of HBCUs and the contributions of Black leaders who belong to historically Black fraternities and sororities and alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. HBCUs have served as cultural and intellectual hubs, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and leadership development. They have contributed significantly to Black culture, literature, arts, and sciences and we are excited to showcase those contributions to Rip City throughout the weekend.

“We are ecstatic to travel North by Northwest to bring the only storm fans are looking forward to; The PVAMU Marching Storm!” said Dr. Tim Zachery, Prairie View A&M Director of Bands.

“We want to continue to serve as a catalyst for young brown and Black youth to see themselves reflected in competitive and valued universities nationally by bringing HBCU representation to Portland,” said Michelle Jalali, Portland Trail Blazers Director of DEI. “This way, we are contributing to the pipeline of young people attending and graduating from HBCUs and eventually filtering into the workforce. As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., HBCU to the Pros Night feels extra special because it brings Black history and Black voices to the forefront of our game by bringing traditional HBCU and D9 culture to the Pacific Northwest to both educate and entertain.”

“Alaska Airlines has a long history of connecting Black youth in the Pacific Northwest to educational opportunities at HBCUs and beyond,” said James Thomas, Alaska Airlines’ Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “We’re proud to fly in the Prairie View A&M band so Portland can experience the unique energy of HBCUs, and the kids in our community can connect with college students who will inspire their educational goals.”
