For HBCU fans, the name Shedeur Sanders carries weight. He made his mark lighting up defenses at Jackson State and later followed his father, Deion Sanders, to Colorado. Now, as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, Sanders is winning hearts in a new way — through generosity off the field.

Shedeur Sanders Partners With Drive Point Auto Group

In Northeast Ohio, Shedeur Sanders joined forces with Drive Point Auto Group, an Ohio-based family of dealerships. Together they launched the “Driven to Give Back” Car Giveaway to honor everyday heroes.

Their goal was simple: find one person whose life could change with a dependable car. That person was Torri Wright, a dedicated mother from Avon, Ohio.

A Daughter’s Nomination Changes Everything

Torri didn’t enter the contest herself. Her daughter, Justice, wrote a heartfelt nomination explaining how hard her mom works to support their family. Her story moved the judges, a panel made up of Drive Point representatives and Shedeur Sanders himself.

Shedeur Sanders Makes the Call

After the judges made their choice, Sanders picked up the phone. He called Torri personally to tell her she had won. In the now-viral clip, you can see the surprise on her face as she realizes the Browns quarterback is on the line.

The Prize: A Brand-New Hyundai Elantra

Torri had a choice between a 2025 Kia K4 LXS and a 2025 Hyundai Elantra SE. She chose the black Elantra — a practical, family-ready ride that will make her daily life easier and safer.

Still Driven to Give Back

From Jackson State to Cleveland, Shedeur Sanders keeps proving that leadership isn’t only about football. He uses his platform to celebrate hard-working people who often go unnoticed. His message stays clear — give back, lift others, and hand over the keys to a better day.

On Monday night, Mo Williams, the former NBA guard turned Jackson State head coach, made waves on social media for his sideline fashion as the Tigers tipped off against No. 17 Illinois. While the game itself was rough—Jackson State fell 113-55 on the road—the buzz centered on Williams’ cool, casual style rather than the box score.

Rocking a denim jacket layered over a black hoodie, accented with a white designer watch, the former All-Star guard’s outfit immediately drew attention across basketball Twitter and sports broadcasts alike.

Williams, now in his fourth season leading Jackson State, is no stranger to the spotlight. As a player, he carved out a long NBA career highlighted by an All-Star appearance with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a stint as a teammate of LeBron James. His sideline demeanor and fashion flair have now become part of his coaching identity, blending the confidence of a former pro with the energy of an HBCU head coach guiding a proud program.

Though Jackson State struggled against a nationally ranked Illinois squad, there were still positives—Devin Ree’s 19 points and Daeshun Ruffin’s 12 kept the Tigers competing through stretches of the game. But as cameras panned to Williams, the conversation shifted. Viewers and analysts alike had their opinions about whether or not he should be wearing a suit — or at least something different.

Next up, Jackson State travels to face No. 11 Louisville on Thursday, Nov. 6—another major stage for both the team and its fashion-forward coach. Win or lose, expect Mo Williams and his NBA-caliber style to keep turning heads as the Tigers continue their early-season road stretch.

You wouldn’t expect a man in a walking boot and on crutches to change the course of an HBCU football game. But Jackson State’s JaCobian Morgan did exactly that in the Tigers’ commanding 42–16 victory over the Florida A&M Rattlers. All without taking a single snap.

Morgan, a native of Canton, Mississippi, suffered a lower leg injury during Jackson State’s loss to Grambling. The setback sidelined him for the FAMU matchup, but head coach T.C. Taylor made it clear that Morgan’s presence was still essential.

The Heart and Soul

“He’s the heart and soul of our football team,” Taylor said. “He’s a winner, a national championship winner, he’s done it at a high level for a long time around here. I told him after the injury, we’re not gonna leave you home. I need you on that sideline.”

Throughout the HBCU rivalry matchup, as freshman quarterback Jared Lockhart navigated early struggles, Morgan became his on-field mentor. Between series, he offered encouragement and advice — not as a coach, but as a big brother. In the second half, Morgan’s leadership deepened as he grabbed an iPad to break down plays and help Lockhart adjust in real time.

Morgan’s leadership isn’t new. In 2024, he led the Tigers to a 10–1 record as the starting quarterback. His season culminated in the program’s first-ever Celebration Bowl championship. The 28–7 win over Chennis Berry’s South Carolina State Bulldogs marked redemption for Jackson State, which had fallen to the same opponent in 2021 under legendary coach Buddy Pough.

Before transferring to play HBCU football at Jackson State, JaCobian Morgan began his career at Syracuse University, where he became one of the few true freshmen to start at quarterback. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 228 pounds, he combined athleticism with academic excellence, earning a spot on the Syracuse Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.

Commitment to Thee Team

His commitment to team success has never been in question — even when injured. “He’s the morale of our football team,” Taylor added. “We’re built around him, and that’s what you see. He even roomed with Jared at the hotel this weekend to keep him comfortable. I didn’t have to go over there during the game much because I saw him coaching him up. He’s a great student of the game, and even though we miss him on the field, he’s doing exactly what we need — leading.”

In a game that showcased Jackson State’s dominance, it was the quiet leadership of an injured quarterback — boot, crutches, and all — that may have made the biggest difference.

Jackson State students got an unexpected visit from a hip-hop legend this week. During a campus event focused on HIV awareness, none other than Snoop Dogg made a surprise appearance as part of GLAAD’s “Generation Z and HIV: Human Issue. Southern Solution. HBCU Tour.”

The rapper, actor, and cultural icon sat down for a fireside chat with GLAAD’s Director of Local News: U.S. South, Darian Aaron, to talk about the intersection of hip-hop, HIV awareness, and LGBTQ representation in media.

The energy wasn’t just about Snoop pulling up — the conversation dug deep. Advocates and health leaders from across Mississippi took the mic to keep it real about what’s still happening with HIV, breaking down the facts on prevention, treatment, and how to protect yourself and your community.

“HIV in Black communities is far from over,” said Aaron. “Black people in the South — no matter who they are or who they love — remain at disproportionate risk. The tour helps students learn that HIV is preventable with an injection or daily pill, and it’s both survivable and untransmittable with proper treatment.”

Snoop Dogg has brought major attention to the cause, reinforcing the message that awareness and education still matter — especially on HBCU campuses leading the charge for change in the South.

Two HBCU campuses in Mississippi — Jackson State and Alcorn State — have reported shootings during Homecoming events.

At Alcorn State, authorities say a shooting occurred near an old gas station on campus around 6:30 p.m., resulting in one woman’s death and two other people being rushed to the hospital. The campus was immediately locked down, and students were told to shelter in place until officials gave an all clear. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.

At Jackson State, reports surfaced of a shooting near the tailgate section of Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium on West Street. A child was reportedly struck and transported to UMMC by Jackson Police in a patrol vehicle. Capitol PD and JPD are investigating, but no suspect details have been confirmed so far.

These shootings come on the heels of a shooting at South Carolina State University last weekend that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler.

Across these three incidents — at Alcorn State, Jackson State, and South Carolina State — common threads emerge. Each incident happened during or around homecoming festivities. The locations varied: tailgate zones, campus peripheries, and student housing areas. At Jackson State, the victim was a child.

These shootings highlight how gatherings meant to celebrate college traditions at HBCUs can be interrupted by violence. As investigations continue, the institutions and law enforcement agencies involved bear the challenge of uncovering what happened, why, and how to prevent recurrence.

Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected at Alcorn State, Jackson State, and South Carolina State during these difficult times. The HBCU community is united in its denouncing of these events.

JACKSON, Miss. — In a matchup hyped as the game of the year in HBCU football, Jackson State and Alabama State delivered. Both teams entered undefeated in the SWAC East, and by the end, it was Jackson State who stood alone atop the division after a breathtaking 38–34 victory Saturday night at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Fourth-Quarter Drama Defines a Classic

This one lived up to every bit of the hype.

  • With 7:07 left, Alabama State quarterback Andrew Body found Jalen Jones for an 8-yard touchdown, trimming Jackson State’s lead to 31–27.
  • Moments later, a Jackson State fumble gave the Hornets a short field. Jamarie Hostzclaw capitalized with a 15-yard scoring run to push Alabama State ahead 34–31 with 4:36 remaining.
  • But the Tigers refused to fold. JaCobian Morgan engineered a clutch drive, culminating in an 18-yard touchdown strike to Nate Rembert with 50 seconds left, reclaiming the lead at 38–34.
  • Alabama State nearly answered in miraculous fashion, driving 69 yards in under a minute — only for the final pass to be stopped at the 1-yard line as time expired.

Jackson State fans roared as the Tigers’ defense held, preserving a win that could define the SWAC East race.

Momentum Shifts and Key Drives

The teams traded control throughout:

  • Jackson State led 17–13 at halftime behind Morgan’s second-quarter touchdown to Ja’Naylon Dupree.
  • Alabama State momentarily went ahead in the third, 20–17, before Jackson State responded to enter the final quarter up 24–20.
  • The final 10 minutes became a highlight reel of counterpunches between two of the conference’s most balanced offenses.

Statistical Leaders

Jackson State (5–1, 3–0 SWAC):

  • JaCobian Morgan: 16-of-23, 187 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT
  • Rushing: 45 carries, 257 yards (5.7 avg)
  • Ja’Naylon Dupree: 4 catches, 53 yards, 2 TD
  • Nate Rembert: 2 catches, 31 yards, 1 TD

Alabama State (4–2, 2–1 SWAC):

  • Jamarie Hostzclaw: 10 carries, 53 yards, 2 TD
  • Top receivers: M. Djete (82 yards), J. Jones (72 yards, 1 TD), T. Harrell (66 yards)

The Stakes: SWAC East Control

Both teams entered undefeated in SWAC East play, and this clash had major championship implications. With the win, Jackson State now sits alone atop the division, controlling its destiny for a return to the SWAC Championship Game.

The atmosphere matched the stakes — a packed crowd, national TV audience, and a finish worthy of the hype. For fans of HBCU football, this one will be remembered as an instant classic.

Homecoming 2025 at Jackson State University will be a celebration of rhythm, sound, and school pride. When the Tigers face Alabama State on Saturday, they’ll debut new uniforms that pay homage to their marching band, the Sonic Boom of the South. This year’s design does more than refresh the Tigers’ look. It tells a story — one that connects football, music, and HBCU excellence in a single statement of culture.

A Look Worthy of the Sonic Boom

The new uniforms draw inspiration directly from the band’s iconic style. They feature a navy blue, light blue, and white color palette — the same combination that defines the Sonic Boom’s sharp presence on the field.

The numerals and trim mirror the band’s signature shoulder detailing. “JACKSON STATE” runs boldly down the pant legs in white, matching the band’s vest accents and gauntlets. Together, these details create a look that feels both modern and timeless.

Even the helmets echo the band’s energy. The navy shell features the player’s number on one side and a light blue “J” outlined in white on the other. Two light blue stripes cut across the top, finished with a clean white facemask. Every element ties back to the spirit of the Sonic Boom.

A Homecoming Stage Like No Other

Saturday’s game already carries weight. Jackson State and Alabama State enter as the top teams in the SWAC. With postseason hopes on the line, this showdown will be one of the biggest in HBCU football this season.

But the unveiling of these uniforms adds another layer to the moment. It’s a visual celebration of legacy — a connection between the roar of the crowd, the rhythm of the drumline, and the unity of the HBCU community.

A Celebration of Sound, Pride, and Legacy

Jackson State’s new look captures what makes HBCUs unique. It fuses athletic competition with musical and cultural tradition, creating something that stands out across the college football landscape.

The decision to honor the Sonic Boom through design highlights JSU’s commitment to storytelling through style. It reminds fans that music, movement, pride, and performance all share the same heartbeat.

As the Tigers take the field under the bright lights, the connection between the band and the team will be clear. This Homecoming isn’t just a game — it’s a performance that celebrates the full scope of HBCU culture.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM on ESPNU, and the entire country will be watching as Jackson State and the Sonic Boom of the South brings its rhythm to the gridiron once again.

Jackson State dominated Alabama A&M in every phase of the game, rolling to a 57–24 victory in the Gulf Coast Challenge on Saturday evening at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama. The Tigers erupted for 702 yards of total offense — 388 on the ground and 314 through the air — as they improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in SWAC play.

Morgan leads the charge

Quarterback JaCobian Morgan delivered one of his finest performances for Jackson State, completing 21 of 31 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He added 120 yards and a touchdown on the ground, accounting for five scores overall. His connection with Shemar Savage proved deadly — the two linked up for a 22-yard strike early and a 60-yard bomb later in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 24-7 lead. Ja’Naylon Dupree also caught two touchdowns, including a 37-yarder in the fourth quarter that iced the win.

Jackson State, TC Taylor

Jackson State run game unstoppable

Jackson State’s ground attack was relentless, gashing Alabama A&M for nearly eight yards per carry. Travis Terrell Jr. broke loose for 103 yards on just seven carries, including a 71-yard burst in the fourth quarter that set up a score. Donerio Davenport and Emari Matthews each punched in short touchdowns to cap long drives, while Ahmad Miller added 72 yards on the ground. By the final whistle, Jackson State had racked up 30 first downs and controlled the tempo through a balanced, explosive attack.

Defensive response and discipline

On defense, the Tigers forced two turnovers and limited A&M’s rushing attack to just 59 yards on 26 attempts. Cornerback Jace Ward grabbed a key interception in the second quarter that set up a short touchdown drive, swinging momentum firmly toward Jackson State. Linebacker Quincy Ivory anchored a unit that recorded 73 total tackles and three tackles for JSU.

A complete team win

Alabama A&M quarterback Cornelious Brown threw for 341 yards and two touchdowns, but the Bulldogs never found a consistent rhythm. Jackson State scored on its first possession of each half and closed the game on a 17-0 run. It was a statement victory for a program that continues to find its groove midseason.

With the Gulf Coast Classic win, Jackson State strengthened its position as a SWAC contender and showed that its blend of quarterback play, physical running, and depth on defense can overwhelm any opponent on a neutral field.

HBCU running backs aren’t just making noise this season — they’re rewriting the rushing leaderboard across the FCS. Through games played Saturday, September 27, 2025, players from Jackson State, North Carolina Central, and Alcorn State are powering their way into national headlines in two key rushing categories: yards per carry and total rushing yards.

Yards Per Carry: Ahmad Miller Sets the Standard

No one in the FCS is more efficient with the football than Ahmad Miller of Jackson State. The junior back is averaging an incredible 8.91 yards per carry, leading the nation. Miller’s explosive start includes a 180-yard, two-touchdown opener against Hampton and another 101-yard performance versus Southern. He’s been the definition of big-play ability for the Tigers’ offense.

Jackson State knocked off Southern 31-17 behind a dominant ground game and timely defense. Miller set the tone with 101 rushing yards on 14 carries, while the Tigers shut out the Jaguars in the fourth quarter to pull away late.

Also representing HBCUs on the efficiency list is Jacorian Sewell of Alcorn State. The senior Bruiser is currently sixth nationally at 7.54 yards per carry, racking up 422 yards on just 56 attempts. Sewell’s production gives Alcorn a dangerous go to back in their offense.

Alcorn State fell in a 24-20 road battle against Arkansas–Pine Bluff after a back-and-forth game. Sewell was a bright spot, ripping off a 33-yard touchdown and adding another short score, but the Braves couldn’t hold a late fourth-quarter lead as UAPB drove 79 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

Total Rushing Yards: Chris Mosley Is the Workhorse

When it comes to sheer volume, Chris Mosley of North Carolina Central is pacing the field. The senior leads the entire FCS with 607 rushing yards through his first six games. Mosley’s season highlights include a monster 182-yard outing against Southern University and a jaw-dropping three-touchdown, 168-yard performance versus North Carolina A&T. He’s proving to be the engine of NCCU’s offense while keeping the Eagles’ championship ambitions alive.

North Carolina Central powered past East Texas A&M 35-21, staying unbeaten in league play. Chris Mosley paced the Eagles’ rushing attack with 72 yards and a score, while the passing game added explosive plays to keep the momentum rolling.

Why It Matters

For HBCU programs, these stats are more than just numbers — they’re proof of the elite talent thriving across Black college football and the impact these athletes can make on the national stage. Miller and Sewell’s efficiency shows how HBCU teams can strike quickly and flip field position in a single snap, while Mosley’s workhorse production underscores the depth and power of HBCU rushing attacks.

With the season just heating up, the race for rushing supremacy could become one of the defining storylines in the FCS — and HBCUs are right at the heart of it.

Jackson State delivered a second-half surge to turn a tight battle into a decisive 38-13 win over Southern University, keeping its grip on one of the most storied rivalries in HBCU football. The Tigers trailed midway through the second quarter but used explosive plays and relentless defense to seize control in Baton Rouge.

Southern University looked poised to flip the script early. After trading field goals, running back Trey Holly broke loose for a 73-yard touchdown run to give the Jaguars a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. The home crowd of 27,487 roared as the Jags briefly sensed momentum swinging their way. But Jackson State responded in kind. Quarterback Jacobian Morgan engineered a 97-yard drive capped by a 51-yard strike to Ja’Naylon Dupree just before halftime, giving the Tigers a 17-13 edge. They never looked back.

The second half belonged entirely to Jackson State. Running back Donerio Davenport muscled in a pair of short touchdown runs, while Travis Terrell Jr. added another score on the ground. The knockout punch came with 4:09 left, when Morgan hit Nate Rembert for an 82-yard touchdown, silencing the Southern University faithful and cementing the victory.

Jackson State,

Jackson State firing on all cylinders

Morgan was efficient and dynamic, finishing 21-of-32 for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Rembert (102 yards, one score) and Dupree (93 yards, one score) provided big-play threats downfield. Ahmad Miller set the tone on the ground with 101 rushing yards as Jackson State piled up 534 yards of total offense compared to Southern’s 300.

Defensively, Jackson State was equally dominant after halftime, holding Southern scoreless over the final 35 minutes. Kam Sallis intercepted Ashton Strother in the red zone, and Quincy Ivory added a sack to help seal the Jaguars’ fate. Southern’s offense managed just 120 passing yards, despite Holly’s 147 yards on the ground.

The win extends Jackson State’s streak to seven straight in the series and underscores why the Tigers remain a standard-bearer in HBCU football. For Southern University, turnovers and missed opportunities once again proved costly, dropping the Jaguars to 1-4 on the season.

Jackson State improves to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in SWAC play, firmly establishing itself as a contender heading into October. In a rivalry built on history and pride, the Tigers once again found a way to rise when it mattered most.

Jackson State and Southern University will meet once again on Saturday in Baton Rouge, continuing one of the most heated rivalries in all of HBCU football. For Jackson State, it’s a chance to build on early momentum and keep control of a series it has recently dominated. For Southern University, it’s a test of pride and resilience as the Jaguars look to snap a six-game losing streak against the Tigers.

HBCU contenders coming off bye

Jackson State enters the game at 2–1, coming off a dominant shutout win over Tuskegee. The Tigers are averaging 26 points per game while holding opponents to just 17.3, a testament to their physical defense and punishing ground attack.

Southern University, meanwhile, is 1–3 after a rugged nonconference stretch that included losses to North Carolina Central, Alabama State, and Fresno State. The Jaguars have struggled on both sides of the ball, averaging just 15.5 points per game while giving up more than 36.

Head coach T.C. Taylor knows his team hasn’t fully clicked yet, but the foundation is clear: Jackson State runs the football with authority and plays stout defense. Ahmad Miller has been the spark, rushing for 282 yards at an eye-popping 9.7 yards per carry with three touchdowns.

The Tigers’ defense is led by Quincy Ivory, who has tallied 25 tackles and three sacks in just three games.

Taylor acknowledged the Tigers’ offensive inconsistency but praised his team’s resilience. “We haven’t clicked on all cylinders on offense right now. Defense, I think, is playing well. Special teams has been okay. But I know what we’re capable of when everybody flips that switch,” Taylor said.

Southern University’s challenges

Southern University enters the rivalry game searching for answers. Head coach Terrence Graves believes his team used the bye week to reset. “It gave us a chance to self-scout. What we do well, let’s keep doing. What we don’t do well, let’s get rid of it,” Graves explained.

Running back Trey Holly has been a bright spot for Southern University, rushing for 267 yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Cam’Ron McCoy has shown flashes with 316 passing yards and two scores, but turnovers have haunted the Jaguars. They lost five fumbles through their first four games, a trend Graves says simply cannot continue. “It’s almost impossible to beat a good team with turnovers,” he said.

Matchup keys

The game will hinge on the battle up front. Jackson State’s offensive line has paved the way for 254 rushing yards per game.

Southern University counters with linebacker Ckelby Givens, who already has 6.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss.

If the Jaguars can slow Miller and the Tigers’ stable of backs, they’ll give themselves a chance to control tempo.

Quarterback play is another major storyline. Taylor has rotated between Jacobian Morgan and Jared Lockhart, with Lockhart showing deep-ball promise in his start against Tuskegee. Graves has not committed to a single starter either, leaving open the possibility that multiple Southern University quarterbacks will see action.

HBCU Rivalry As Close As It Gets

The rivalry between Jackson State and Southern University is one of the crown jewels of HBCU football. Since the first meeting in 1929, the programs have staged classic battles in front of packed houses and national television audiences. Southern University leads the overall series 37–35 but Jackson State has won the last six meetings, including a 41–13 victory in the 2024 SWAC Championship Game. Southern University’s last win came in the spring of 2021, a 34–14 triumph in Jackson.

What’s at stake for Southern and Jackson State

For Jackson State, a win means continuing its early-season push and extending its stranglehold in this rivalry. For Southern University, the game represents more than just a shot at redemption — it’s about reestablishing confidence and showing that the Jaguars can still compete at the highest level of HBCU football.

“Anytime you go down into Baton Rouge you better have your mind right as a football team and as a program,” Taylor said.

Graves echoed the sentiment, reminding his team to “block out the noise” and focus on execution.

As Saturday approaches, fans across the HBCU landscape know what this matchup represents: tradition, intensity, and bragging rights that last all year — or at least until they meet again.

Jackson State University alumnus Tramell Tillman showcased HBCU greatness by making television history at the 2025 Emmy Awards, becoming the first Black man to win Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Tillman, best known for his role as Milchick on the Apple TV+ series Severance, earned his very first Emmy nomination and win on Sunday night. His victory places Jackson State in the national spotlight once again, as another HBCU graduate breaks barriers on the biggest stage in entertainment.

From HBCU Roots to Hollywood Success

Before transferring to Jackson State, Tillman began his college career at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, another distinguished HBCU. Tillman was a premed student at XULA but transferred to Jackson State in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. That HBCU foundation shaped his path as an artist and leader, giving him the resilience and presence that now define his work.

His academic journey through historically Black colleges highlights the powerful role HBCUs continue to play in developing world-class talent across every field—including Hollywood.

A Competitive Emmy Field

Tillman’s category featured a strong lineup of nominees: Zach Cherry (Severance), James Marsden (Paradise), John Turturro (Severance), Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus), Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus), and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus).

By capturing the award, Tillman not only earned personal recognition but also created a cultural milestone that further elevates Jackson State University’s reputation.

A Powerful Speech Dedicated to His Mother

During his acceptance speech, Tillman shared words of focus and determination:

“You remember what you want to remember. You make time for what you want to make time for, do the work, show up, and most importantly, for the love of God, don’t embarrass me in public.”

He then dedicated the moment to his mother:

“My first acting coach was tough, y’all, but all great mothers are. Mama, you were there for me when no one else was and no one else would show up. Your loving kindness stays with me, and this is for you… As my mama would say, ‘look at God.’”

A Historic Emmy Night

The award, presented by Jude Law and Jason Bateman, came as the third honor of the evening, following wins by Seth Rogen (The Studio) and Jean Smart (Hacks) in the comedy categories.

Tillman’s win not only cements his place in Emmy history but also underscores the importance of Jackson State and HBCUs in shaping cultural leaders who inspire on a global scale.

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State dominated on both sides of the ball Saturday, pitching its first shutout in nearly two years with a 30-0 win over Tuskegee in the W.C. Gorden Classic at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Tigers (2-1) set the tone with smothering defense, while freshman quarterback Jared Lockhart shined in his collegiate debut.

Defense Locks Down

Jackson State’s defense was relentless, holding Tuskegee (2-1) to just 109 total yards on the afternoon. The Golden Tigers managed only 24 rushing yards on 20 attempts (1.2 yards per carry) and just seven first downs. Tuskegee crossed midfield twice all game – once ending in a punt, the other a blocked field goal by Kazarius Bowie to preserve the shutout.

Defensive lineman Quincy Ivory led JSU with seven tackles and two tackles for loss, while Defensive MVP J’Cori Hargon added six stops. Reid Pulliam and Kam Sallis each chipped in five tackles, with Pulliam also contributing to a third-quarter safety.

Lockhart Leads the Way

On the offensive side, Lockhart wasted no time making his presence felt. Named Offensive MVP, the freshman completed 14 of 20 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 32 yards and two scores. His accuracy and mobility kept Tuskegee’s defense on its heels.

Backup quarterback Parker Stofa added his first career touchdown with a one-yard plunge late in the third quarter.

Balanced Ground Attack

JSU flexed its depth in the backfield, piling up 252 rushing yards on 50 carries (5.0 ypc).

  • Ahmad Miller led with 69 yards on eight carries, including a 40-yard burst.
  • Donerio Davenport added 57 yards on nine carries, while Travis Terrell Jr. broke off 52 yards on six carries.

Through the air, Kobe Paul was the go-to target, finishing with 113 yards on five catches, highlighted by a 51-yard grab. Ja’Naylon Dupree hauled in two receptions for 57 yards, while Jameel Gardner Jr. added 47 yards and a touchdown.

In total, the Tigers rolled up 511 yards of offense on 72 plays, nearly outgaining Tuskegee five to one.

Scoring Summary

  • 1st Qtr | 11:53 – Lockhart 11-yd TD run (Baeza kick) – JSU 7-0
  • 2nd Qtr | 14:07 – Lockhart 6-yd TD run (Baeza kick) – JSU 14-0
  • 2nd Qtr | 1:55 – Gardner 21-yd TD pass from Lockhart (Baeza kick) – JSU 21-0
  • 3rd Qtr | 4:28 – Safety by Pulliam – JSU 23-0

Jackson State football hosts Tuskegee in the W.C. Gorden Classic on Saturday, broadcasted live on SWAC TV. Can JSU’s ground game and defense hold off the Golden Tigers’ special teams and momentum?

Series History: Jackson State vs. Tuskegee

Jackson State and Tuskegee have only met three times in football history. The Tigers won the first two matchups, while Tuskegee earned the most recent victory in 2017 in Mobile, Alabama. This week marks the first meeting between the two schools in nearly a decade.

Jackson State enters the game at 1–1 after falling to Southern Miss. The Tigers carry an 11-game winning streak against FCS opponents and a seven-game home win streak. They have also won five straight W.C. Gorden Classics, including both under head coach T.C. Taylor.

  • Ahmad Miller (RB): Miller leads the offense with 180 yards in the opener and three rushing touchdowns this season. Jackson State’s offense has scored all six touchdowns on the ground.
  • JaCobian Morgan (QB): The graduate transfer is 14–4 as a starter in his career. He went 10–1 last season for the Tigers, losing only to ULM.
  • Quincy Ivory (LB): A disruptive defender, Ivory ranks third nationally in sacks (1.5 per game). He has earned SWAC Newcomer of the Week honors in consecutive weeks.
  • Gerardo Baeza (K): Baeza remains consistent, hitting two field goals from 40+ yards last week. He has now converted 75 career extra points.

Jackson State’s red zone efficiency remains a major strength. The Tigers have scored on every red zone trip this season after finishing second in the nation last year at 96.3 percent.

Tuskegee Football: Momentum and Playmakers

Tuskegee comes in at 2–0 after shutting out Central State 34–0. It was the program’s first-ever night game at Abbott Memorial Stadium, and the Golden Tigers showed balance in all three phases.

  • EJ Hall (WR/RS): The sophomore transfer has emerged as a spark plug. He caught a 66-yard touchdown last week and added a 34-yard punt return.
  • Lorcan Ryans (K): Ryans earned SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week after going 4-for-4 on PATs and drilling field goals from 42 and 33 yards. He also averaged nearly 63 yards per kickoff with six touchbacks.
  • Raequan Beal (QB): Beal continues to manage the offense well. His deep strike to Hall showed Tuskegee’s ability to create explosive plays.

Tuskegee’s defense also deserves recognition. The Golden Tigers forced multiple three-and-outs and allowed zero points against Central State.

Matchup Storylines

  • Ground Game vs. Defense: Jackson State leans heavily on the run, while Tuskegee is coming off a shutout. The battle in the trenches will be decisive.
  • Special Teams Impact: Both teams have elite kickers. Tuskegee’s Ryans and return man Hall give the Golden Tigers a chance to flip the field, but JSU’s Baeza is one of the SWAC’s most reliable legs.
  • Classic Pressure: Jackson State has dominated the W.C. Gorden Classic in recent years. Tuskegee will look to snap that streak.

Analyst Outlook

Jackson State’s home-field advantage, red zone efficiency, and rushing attack make the Tigers favorites. However, Tuskegee’s momentum, special teams play, and defensive confidence cannot be ignored. If the Golden Tigers can create turnovers and big special teams plays, an upset is possible. Otherwise, JSU’s depth and balance should carry the day.

Dr. Kenyatta Cavil is taking his vision of connecting academics, athletics, and professional leadership on the road with the new HBCU Sports Ecosystem Series: Beyond The Game. The initiative, which debuts September 12 at Jackson State University, aims to prepare students and mid-level professionals for executive opportunities in the ever-changing landscape of HBCU athletics.

“This started back in May at Texas Southern University,” Dr. Cavil explained. “We brought in several directors of athletics as well as a couple of commissioners…so they could talk to our students and then talk about how they transition from mid-management into executive positions”DrCavilSports. That two-day event, supported by the Center for Africana Futures, laid the groundwork for what is now becoming a traveling series.

The Jackson State stop will feature Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland alongside Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson. “We’ll talk about how the conference is moving forward in this current environment,” Cavil notedDrCavilSports. Tuskegee athletic director Reginald Ruffin will also join the program, bringing his perspective as his Golden Tigers prepare for a weekend matchup in Jackson.

According to Cavil, the sessions go far beyond theory. “I like to be somebody that is not just theoretical but actually practical,” he said. “How do we hit the ground and make it go from theoretical to practical…so that students can use what they’ve learned in the classroom in a very practical way to help develop businesses.”

The fall lineup includes four stops: Jackson State in September, Norfolk State in October, Alabama State in November, and a culminating event in Atlanta around the Celebration Bowl. Each session will feature athletic leaders, influencers, and health professionals, all designed to give participants a 360-degree view of the HBCU sports industry.

For Cavil, the word “ecosystem” is intentional. “We have an ecosystem that is naturally encompassing, but oftentimes we have influential things that come out into the ecosystem,” he said. He pointed to Robinson’s bold 2020 hire of Deion Sanders as an example: “That single decision…changed the trajectory of intercollegiate athletic sports, not just in HBCU sports, but beyond that.”

Ultimately, Cavil sees the series as a bridge between the classroom and the boardroom. “The better that we put that lexicon out there and start talking about it, it helps those ADs, VPs, commissioners, presidents, and chancellors provide dollar value to that brand,” he explained.

With “Beyond The Game,” Dr. Cavil is ensuring that the next generation of HBCU leaders has the knowledge, access, and vision to shape the future.

Travis Hunter’s path to the NFL is unlike most. He stunned college football in 2022 when he signed with Jackson State, flipping the script on recruiting and shining under Deion Sanders. His time at JSU made him a household name, and now, that story continues in the NFL.

On Sunday, Hunter suited up for the Jacksonville Jaguars in his first NFL game. His debut was more than just stats—it was a cultural and style statement.

The look: low cut taper fade makes waves

Hunter arrived at EverBank Stadium sporting a low cut taper fade, a bold change from his signature braids. The fresh style drew attention immediately and symbolized a new chapter in his football journey.

Fans and cameras picked up on the change before kickoff, turning his haircut into part of the debut conversation.

The cleats: Anthony Edwards 1 hits the gridiron

Hunter also made waves with his footwear. He wore custom adidas cleats inspired by NBA star Anthony Edwards’ AE 1 sneakers. The crossover between basketball and football added buzz to his first game.

Adidas has teased a full release of AE 1 football cleats in 2026. For now, Hunter gave fans the first look at how the design plays on the field.

The role: wide receiver first, cornerback second

The Jaguars used Hunter primarily as a wide receiver, with a few snaps on defense at cornerback. Coaches made it clear they want him to be an every-down playmaker on offense while using his two-way skills selectively.

Hunter’s first NFL touch came on a quick pass that he turned into a 10-yard gain. It was a simple play, but one that showcased his burst and reliable hands.

The debut: steady production in a winning effort

The Jaguars defeated the Carolina Panthers 26–10 in a weather-delayed opener. Hunter finished with six receptions and one tackle, contributing on both sides of the ball.

Despite a long lightning delay, Hunter stayed sharp, recording multiple catches before and after the stoppage. Jacksonville controlled the game from start to finish, and Hunter’s performance helped set the tone.

What it means for Jacksonville and beyond

For Jacksonville, Hunter’s debut was exactly what the team hoped for. He showed chemistry with quarterback Trevor Lawrence, versatility across formations, and maturity under pressure. Coaches managed his defensive snaps wisely, ensuring his offensive impact stayed high.

For HBCU fans, Hunter’s debut carried even more meaning. His journey from Jackson State to the NFL spotlight is a testament to his talent and to the rising profile of HBCU football.

Quick stats from Travis Hunter’s first NFL game

  • Final Score: Jaguars 26, Panthers 10
  • Hunter: 6 receptions, 1 defensive tackle
  • First catch: 10-yard gain
  • Style notes: low cut taper fade haircut and custom Anthony Edwards 1 cleats

Final word

Travis Hunter’s NFL debut was more than just a game—it was a statement. With a fresh look, bold cleats, and steady play, he showed why Jacksonville invested in him so heavily.

From Jackson State to Duval, Hunter continues to blend style, substance, and success. And with Week 1 in the books, the NFL already knows: Travis Hunter has arrived.

The post Jackson State fans target of racist post on Southern Miss fan page appeared first on HBCU Gameday.

]]>
Southern Miss fans are buzzing ahead of this weekend’s matchup against Jackson State, but not all of the pregame chatter has been about football. A Facebook post circulating from an account titled Eaglepost has drawn heavy criticism for its condescending tone and thinly veiled racism toward Jackson State supporters, many of whom proudly represent the HBCU tradition.

The post, written under the name Rye Stanford, outlined so-called “rules for JSU fans for the USM game.” What followed was a laundry list of stereotypes directed at Jackson State fans, ranging from accusations about littering “chicken boxes” and “swisher sweet wrappers” to mocking their cars, music, and behavior at tailgates. One line even instructed fans to “keep your windows up and your rap down,” a statement that reads less like game-day etiquette and more like coded language steeped in racial bias.

Condescension Disguised as Humor

The attempt at humor in the post lands as patronizing and insulting. By singling out chicken, rap music, and Dodge Chargers, the writer leans into caricatures often used to demean Black culture. The post continues its mockery by painting Jackson State fans as clueless about assigned seating, addicted to smoking “skunk weed,” and incapable of tipping at restaurants.

It’s one thing for fans to trade good-natured trash talk before a big game, but the tone of this list is not playful banter. Instead, it plays directly into stereotypes about Black fans and HBCU culture, reducing an entire fanbase to a handful of ugly clichés.

Southern Miss

The HBCU Context

Jackson State is one of the crown jewels of HBCU football, with a long history of producing NFL talent and drawing some of the largest crowds in the Football Championship Subdivision. Its passionate fanbase is not only loyal but also a key part of the broader HBCU culture that has shaped American sports. For Southern Miss fans to belittle that community with racialized “rules” sends a troubling message.

Adding to the irony is the fact that Southern Miss head coach Charles Huff is himself a product of an HBCU. Huff, who took over the Golden Eagles program in 2024, played college football at Hampton University, another historically Black institution with a proud athletic tradition. The idea that fans who will cheer a Southern Miss program led by a Black man who came through the HBCU system while making such ‘posts’ is appalling — but not shocking.

The Larger Problem

This episode underscores a larger problem in college athletics: the persistent lack of respect for HBCUs and their supporters. Whether it’s television coverage, playoff opportunities, or even pregame commentary, HBCU programs and their fans are too often treated as less than their predominantly white counterparts. The Facebook post in question is simply another example of the casual racism that these games bring out.

Just because Southern Miss is a punching bag for SEC schools doesn’t mean it has the right to “punch down” at JSU. Though JSU is an HBCU and has never received its proper funding, it has a much richer football history and is currently a nationally-ranked Division I (albeit FCS) program. Perhaps Southern Miss fans would do better to support their historically underachieving program under its new leader than to take shots at Jackson State.

Jackson State opened its season with a hard-fought win over Hampton, but the postgame remarks from head coach TC Taylor and his players made it clear that the Tigers are still far from satisfied. While the defending HBCU champions showed flashes of dominance on both sides of the ball, Taylor stressed that discipline and execution will need to improve if Jackson State is going to live up to its lofty expectations this season.

Penalties and Offensive Rhythm a Point of Emphasis

Taylor did not mince words when addressing his team’s lack of discipline.

“Ten penalties for 89 yards is unacceptable as a program,” he said. “I got to be better as head coach, getting my guys to understand the discipline.”

Jackson State committed costly errors that stalled drives and prevented the Tigers from capitalizing on prime scoring opportunities.

The coach also pointed to a lack of rhythm in the first half as a major concern. Despite the defense creating turnovers and setting the offense up in plus territory, the Tigers failed to put points on the board until late. “We was in the plus 40 a couple times and just couldn’t get nothing going,” Taylor admitted. The Tigers eventually found their footing in the fourth quarter, but Taylor made clear that finding offensive rhythm earlier will be crucial against tougher opponents.

Running Back Room Shows Its Depth and Brotherhood

One of the brightest spots of the win came from the backfield. Jackson State piled up 280 rushing yards behind a committee of backs who not only produced but also supported one another. “Travis really started the game out, and you had Ariel Davenport play a good game,” Taylor said, noting that several other players contributed.

Players echoed the importance of chemistry, describing their room as a true brotherhood. “It pushes everybody… it’s a lot of motivation, but the brotherhood, we love each other,” one back explained. Taylor credited running backs coach Garland for cultivating that culture, which has allowed multiple runners to shine. For Jackson State, the ability to rotate productive backs not only keeps legs fresh but also makes the Tigers’ offense harder to game plan against.

Defense and Special Teams Set the Tone

Defensively, Jackson State responded well after giving up an early Hampton touchdown. The unit adopted a “bend, don’t break” approach, locking in to prevent big plays the rest of the way. Even with standout Jeremiah Williams sidelined, Taylor praised Quincy Avery and others for stepping up, saying it was a luxury to rest one of the team’s best players while still “dominating defensively.”

Special teams also provided a spark. Freshman kicker Eric Simmons impressed by booming multiple kickoffs through the end zone, while his namesake in the return game flashed explosiveness with a pair of big runs that were unfortunately called back due to penalties. Taylor called the performance a sign that the Tigers are “making of a good football team,” one capable of winning games in multiple phases.

Attendance hits five-year low

Perhaps the most surprising number of the day wasn’t on the scoreboard but in the stands. The official crowd at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium was 13,576 — the lowest attended Jackson State home game since Deion Sanders’ debut against Edward Waters during the COVID-impacted spring 2021 season, when just over 11,000 were on hand. For a program that has regularly packed the Vet with some of the largest crowds in HBCU football, the figure was a stark contrast to recent years of sellouts and electric atmospheres. Jackson State consistently leads the FCS in attendance and will look to do so in 2025 as well.

Looking Ahead

Taylor reminded his team that expectations remain sky high and that Jackson State will carry a target on its back all season. “Every week we’re going to have a target on our back,” he said. “We just have to find a way to come away with the W.” With Southern Miss looming on the schedule, the Tigers will look to clean up their mistakes while building on the depth, brotherhood, and resilience that were on full display in their season opener.

The name Lee Corso will forever be synonymous with College GameDay. For decades, he brought joy, anticipation, and theater to Saturday mornings with the simple act of putting on a mascot head. From Buckeyes to Trojans to Ducks, he made the final pick of the show more than just a prediction—it became a cultural touchstone. But for those of us who cover HBCUs closely, there will always be one image that never came to life: Lee Corso wearing the Jackson State tiger head.

In October 2022, Jackson State had the distinction of becoming just the second HBCU to host College GameDay at its home stadium. The energy around Deion Sanders’ program was unlike anything else in college football at the time, and ESPN brought its flagship pregame show to Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for the matchup between Jackson State and Southern. For HBCUs, it was another chance to be front and center on the national stage. And for Jackson State, it was supposed to be the day that Lee Corso put on the Tiger head.

Corso, of course, had been battling health issues for several years. His appearances on College GameDay had grown less frequent, but word was he would be in Jackson that morning. I had just arrived from the airport and made my way to the stadium to interview the GameDay crew. Reese Davis, Desmond Howard, and the rest of the team were there. But Lee Corso was not.

Inside the bowels of the stadium, someone brought out the tiger head—Jackson State’s symbol—placing it on a table in the press room. That was the moment it became clear what Corso was supposed to do. He was going to pick Jackson State, sliding that head over his shoulders to the roar of fans. But the announcement came down soon after: Corso would not be appearing on the show. Health had once again kept him away. The tiger head sat silently on the table, a reminder of the moment that never came.

Jackson State, Lee Corso, HBCU Gameday

Lee Corso and HBCU mascots

It wasn’t the first time Corso had embraced HBCUs. College GameDay made its HBCU debut at Florida A&M years earlier, and Corso gleefully donned the Rattler helmet in Tallahassee—just miles from where he once starred as a defensive back at Florida State. In 2021, when GameDay traveled to Atlanta for the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, he picked up the Alcorn State Bravehead as HBCUs officially kicked off the fall football season. He was wrong in that pick—North Carolina Central won—but it showed that HBCUs were part of his legendary GameDay tradition.

Still, the tiger head looms large. For those of us who saw it sitting there that morning in 2022, it’s a bittersweet memory. Lee Corso gave so much to the game, to the pageantry, to the fans who tuned in every week. Yet, one of the sport’s most iconic rituals never found its way to one of its proudest programs. Jackson State’s tiger head stayed on the table, never to be worn by Corso. And now, with Corso making his final College GameDay pick, we know it never will be.

But maybe that’s fitting. Corso’s impact didn’t need the final prop. It lives in the moments, the exposure, and the recognition he helped bring to programs too often overlooked. And in that way, even without the tiger head, Lee Corso’s legacy is complete — the HBCU world included.

  • Offense: 36.4 points, 401.2 yards per game.
  • Strength: Rushing attack (212 YPG) + elite red zone (96%).
  • X-Factor: 3rd quarter dominance (outscored opponents 168–88).

Hampton Pirates (5–7 in 2024)

  • Competed in tough CAA, where 4 teams made playoffs.
  • Defense: No. 1 in CAA – 317.7 YPG allowed, best pass defense (167.8).
  • Offense: Led by RB Ja’Quan Snipes (531 yds, 6 TDs in 5 starts).

  • Momentum: Hampton must flip close-game struggles to pull off upset.

Game Day Culture

  • Tailgating at “The Vet”: All-day, all-in Jackson State tradition.

Bottom Line:
Jackson State brings championship momentum and a punishing ground game. Hampton’s defense can keep it close, but JSU’s depth and 3rd-quarter punch make the Tigers heavy favorites.

Projected Score: Jackson State 34, Hampton 21

Setting the Stage

The 2025 season opener at “The Vet” pits two proud programs against each other: the Jackson State Tigers, reigning SWAC champions, and the Hampton Pirates, who enter from the gauntlet of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA).

Though Hampton has played 1,090 games in its football history, this will be just the fourth all-time meeting with Jackson State. The Pirates hold a 3-0 record in the series, including a 17–13 win in 2008 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando.

This matchup offers contrast: Jackson State’s explosive offense against Hampton’s stingy defense, both top units in their respective leagues last fall.

Weather Outlook

Game day in Jackson should feature morning showers giving way to partly sunny skies by kickoff, with a high near 81°F (27°C). Early tailgaters may need ponchos, but the field should be in good condition for afternoon football.

Jackson State Tigers (2024: 12–2, 8–0 SWAC)

Jackson State enters off a Celebration Bowl victory over South Carolina State (28–7) and a final FCS ranking of No. 18. The Tigers closed last year on a 10-game winning streak, including an undefeated home slate.

  • Scoring: 36.4 points per game (2nd SWAC, 5th FCS)
  • Total Offense: 401.2 yards per game (2nd SWAC, 34th FCS)
  • Rushing: 211.9 yards per game — the identity of the offense
  • Passing: 189.3 yards per game — efficient balance behind the run
  • Red Zone: 96% success rate (52-of-54), among the best in FCS
  • Quarter Dominance: Explosive after halftime — scored 168 points in 3rd quarters

Coach T.C. Taylor’s squad is known for pounding opponents on the ground and then striking efficiently through the air. Defensively, the Tigers gave up only 17.1 PPG (6th in FCS), complementing the offense’s firepower.

Hampton Pirates (2024: 5–7, 3–5 CAA)

The Pirates endured a tough schedule in the CAA — one of the strongest conferences in FCS — where four opponents (Richmond, Villanova, New Hampshire, Rhode Island) reached the 2024 playoffs.

Despite a 5–7 record, Hampton kept games close: six of their 12 contests were decided by a touchdown or less, though they went just 1–5 in those matchups.

  • Scoring Defense: 26.9 points per game allowed (6th CAA, 86th FCS)
  • Total Defense: 317.7 yards allowed (1st CAA, 27th FCS)
  • Pass Defense: 167.8 yards allowed (1st CAA, 20th FCS)
  • Rushing Defense: 149.9 yards allowed (6th CAA)
  • Turnovers: +3 margin (19 gained, 16 lost)

Key Players:

  • RB Ja’Quan Snipes – Emerged late last season, rushing for 531 yards and six TDs in just five starts. He will be the offensive anchor.
  • DB Will Hicks – 48 tackles, the top returning defender.
  • LB Michael Matthews-Canty – Sophomore poised for a larger role after 34 stops in 2024.

Key Matchups to Watch

  1. JSU Run Game vs. Hampton Front Seven
Jackson State averaged 211.9 YPG on the ground in 2024. Hampton allowed 149.9 YPG, respectable but vulnerable against elite rushing teams. This trench battle may decide momentum.
  2. Red Zone Execution
The Tigers were nearly automatic inside the 20 (96%), while Hampton’s defense forced opponents to settle for field goals (only 35 TDs allowed on 42 trips). Whoever wins this situational duel gains the edge.
  3. Turnovers and Close-Game Luck
Hampton’s +3 turnover margin shows discipline, but their inability to close out one-score games (1–5 record) was costly. Against a JSU team that thrives in 3rd-quarter surges, the Pirates must protect possessions late.
  4. Historical Motivation
Hampton has never lost to Jackson State (3-0 all-time). Meanwhile, JSU hasn’t forgotten its 2008 defeat and now wields the confidence of a reigning SWAC champion.

Fan Culture Spotlight

For HBCU football, Saturdays are about much more than the game on the field — and this weekend will be no exception in Jackson.

  • Tailgating at “The Vet”: Expect sprawling setups outside Veterans Memorial Stadium, with grills, tents, and a sea of blue and white Tiger fans. The morning showers won’t dampen the energy — tailgate culture is central to the JSU experience.
  • The Sonic Boom of the South vs. The Hampton University Marching Force: Halftime promises to be just as competitive as the game itself. Jackson State’s Sonic Boom brings unmatched volume and flair, while Hampton’s Marching Force is known for precision, energy, and East Coast style. Band culture at this level is as much a battle of pride as the scoreboard.
  • Tradition & Atmosphere: Jackson State fans routinely lead FCS football in attendance, creating one of the most electric HBCU game-day environments. For Hampton, traveling south to Mississippi offers a chance to showcase their culture on a big SWAC stage.

Prediction

This game feels like a true “strength vs. strength” showdown: Jackson State’s high-powered SWAC offense against Hampton’s top-ranked CAA defense. The Pirates have shown they can hang close against quality opponents, but sustaining that over four quarters in “The Vet” will be a challenge.

Projected Final Score:
Jackson State 34, Hampton 21

Adam Schefter reports the former HBCU quarterback will be one of four QBs on the Browns’ 53-man roster.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders looks set to make the team’s 53-man roster. The Browns released veteran Tyler Huntley, paving the way for the former HBCU star to remain in one of the NFL’s deepest quarterback rooms.

Schefter’s Report

Adam Schefter reported that Cleveland plans to keep Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Sanders on its final roster. Along with Huntley, the Browns also released multiple players, including T Jackson Barton, CB Tony Brown II, and S Nik Needham, while waiving 17 others.

The move signals that head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry are serious about holding onto four quarterbacks heading into Week 1 of the NFL season.

Berry explained the decision over the weekend:

“We have a room that we like all the guys in there. We don’t really see that as a problem; we more see it as an opportunity.”

Sanders’ Preseason Rollercoaster

For Sanders, the news comes after an up-and-down preseason. The former Colorado and Jackson State star admitted he didn’t play his best in Saturday’s 19–17 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

He went 3-of-6 for 14 yards and was sacked five times in five offensive series. Still, when asked whether he believed he would make the roster, his response was as direct as it gets:

“Obviously. I think, overall as a player, I’ve put in the work. Everything I do, I try to do it to my best, and that’s all I can ask for.”

Sanders also admitted he was frustrated about not getting Cleveland’s final drive against the Rams, when Stefanski turned to Huntley instead.

“In the heat of the battle, you want to be that alpha. You want to be that dog. … That’s what happens when you want to be a player to be able to change a franchise.”

It wasn’t all rough spots this preseason, though. Shedeur Sanders shined against the Carolina Panthers in the opener, completing 8 of 12 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. That performance showcased the poise and accuracy that made him a household name and gave the Cleveland Browns an early glimpse of his upside.

Veteran Guidance

Despite his struggles, Sanders has the support of Cleveland’s quarterback room. Flacco, the 40-year-old veteran named the Week 1 starter, reminded Sanders that tough nights are part of the rookie experience.

“That’s part of being a rookie. You’re going to get thrown into situations that maybe you don’t think are ideal. … We’ve all been there.”

Stefanski echoed that the offensive struggles weren’t solely on Sanders:

“We didn’t play great as an offense in the second half. That’s never on one person.”

The Read Between the Lines

Sanders’ inclusion on the Browns’ roster is a major step for the former HBCU standout, who was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft earlier this year. While the depth chart lists Flacco as the starter, Pickett, Sanders, and Gabriel are still firmly in the mix. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski responded to a question about naming the backup to Joe Flacco, saying, “I’m just not there yet.”

The NFL preseason is all about opportunity, but for some players, that chance ends quickly. On August 24, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers waived defensive back Shilo Sanders. The Jackson State and Colorado transfer is one of the most well-known names to come out of an HBCU football program in recent years.

The Waiver Move

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Sanders and his representatives “hope he gets claimed on waivers.” The news came less than 24 hours after Sanders was ejected from his final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Officials flagged him for unnecessary roughness after he threw a punch in an altercation with tight end Zach Davidson.

“You can’t throw punches in this league — that’s inexcusable,” Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles said. “They’re going to get you every time. You’ve got to grow from that.”

The timing of the move adds intrigue to Sanders’ storyline, especially with the preseason roster deadline approaching and NFL front offices evaluating depth across every position.

Shilo Sanders’ Short Stint in Tampa Bay

In April, Sanders signed a three-year, $3 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. The signing drew headlines and shined another spotlight on Jackson State and HBCU football talent reaching the NFL.

Sanders played in all three of Tampa Bay’s preseason games and logged four solo tackles. While the stats didn’t leap off the box score, he showed flashes of the physical play he carried at Jackson State and Colorado, where he played under his father, Deion Sanders.

Why HBCU Talent Still Matters in the NFL

For HBCU football fans, Sanders’ situation feels familiar. Many standouts from historically Black colleges and universities still battle uphill odds for recognition in the league, even with proven talent. Sanders’ journey underscores the ongoing challenges and opportunities HBCU athletes face as they fight for NFL roster spots.

Although Tampa Bay moved on, other franchises could see Sanders as valuable depth at defensive back. His window hasn’t completely closed with teams still tinkering with their 53-man rosters.

What’s Next for Shilo Sanders?

Sanders’ future hinges on whether another team claims him off waivers. His name recognition, versatility, and experience at both Jackson State and Colorado could help him land another opportunity.

The bigger question remains: which team will take the gamble? Could the Raiders, Commanders, or Panthers come calling? Or will Sanders have to battle his way onto a practice squad before cracking a regular-season roster?

Shilo Sanders, HBCU, Jackson State, Tampa Bay, NFL
Final Takeaway

Being waived doesn’t mean the end of the road—especially for a player with Sanders’ pedigree. NFL scouts constantly search for talent, and Sanders’ background at Jackson State and Colorado ensures he’ll stay on their radar.

For HBCU football supporters, his story is another reminder that the pipeline from historically Black colleges and universities to the NFL remains strong, even if the path comes with obstacles.

Question for Fans: Do you think Shilo Sanders will land on another roster before the season starts, or will he need to rebuild his stock on a practice squad?

Shilo Sanders is fighting for his NFL dream with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The undrafted rookie safety impressed in his preseason debut but stumbled in his second game. Now, his future may come down to one final chance against the Buffalo Bills.

Strong Start in Debut

Sanders made an impact in his first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. He delivered a solo tackle, a quarterback hit, and played 37 defensive snaps—third most on the team.

Head coach Todd Bowles praised his toughness, noting Sanders’ strong tackling and energy on the field.

Setback Against the Steelers

The second preseason game told a different story. Sanders came in during the third quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He recorded two tackles but also missed two key plays and failed to stand out in coverage.

NFL analysts called it a poorly timed dip in performance. With roster cuts looming, every snap matters.

Current Roster Outlook

Most projections now leave Shilo Sanders off the Buccaneers’ 53-man roster. Tampa Bay appears set with safeties J.J. Roberts, Kaevon Merriwether, Christian Izien, Tykee Smith, and Pro Bowler Antoine Winfield Jr.

Still, GM Jason Licht and coach Bowles have both highlighted Sanders’ hunger and work ethic. Bowles said: “This last week is going to be very important for those guys to show up.”

A Family Moment

Even amid roster uncertainty, Sanders shared a touching moment. After his debut, he gave his game-worn jersey to his mother. His father, Deion Sanders, joked he wouldn’t accept one unless Shilo grabbed “multiple interceptions.”

Final Chance Against the Bills

The Buccaneers face the Buffalo Bills on August 23. For Sanders, this game could determine whether he earns a roster spot, lands on the practice squad, or is released.

Key Takeaways

  • Strong debut: Standout plays vs. Titans.
  • Second-game struggles: Missed tackles vs. Steelers.
  • Roster projection: Currently on the outside looking in.
  • Coach’s view: Praised for toughness and effort.
  • Last opportunity: Must perform well vs. Bills.

Unbeknownst to him, Shedeur Sanders’ NFL debut was a full circle moment to his college football debut at Jackson State.

A video emerged online with a referee stopping to greet the Cleveland Browns quarterback during his preseason debut with the Carolina Panthers.

Brian Perry was the official. During a break in the action he went over to Sanders.

“Let me tell you how old I feel now,” Perry said. “Where was your first game in college?”

“Where? FAMU,” Shedeur responded trying to remember.

“Vs what? At the Orange Blossom (Classic). I was on that game.”

Shedeur Sanders Brett Favre
Shedeur Sanders played his first two seasons at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado.

“For real?” Shedeur replied. “That’s crazy.”

“Yeah I was in the SWAC then,” Perry said. “That’s how things just keep going. Best of luck to you.”

Sanders threw for two touchdowns in three quarters in the Browns’ win over the Panthers.

Shedeur Sanders made his much-anticipated HBCU debut for Jackson State University on September 5, 2021, against Florida A&M in the Orange Blossom Classic. The freshman quarterback and son of head coach Deion Sanders showed poise and maturity, leading the Tigers to a 7-6 win in a defensive battle. Though his debut stat line was modest—18 of 24 passing for 221 yards—he demonstrated excellent decision-making and composure under pressure.

From 2021 to 2022, Shedeur Sanders rewrote Jackson State’s record books. He passed for over 6,900 yards and 70 touchdowns in just two seasons, leading the Tigers to back-to-back SWAC Championships and Celebration Bowl appearances.

The defending HBCU national champion Jackson State Tigers are two weeks away from their Aug. 30 opener against Hampton, and head coach T.C. Taylor says his team is making steady progress through training camp.

“I’m very excited and pleased where we are as a football team,” Taylor said. “We had a solid scrimmage—one of my better ones as a head coach here. The defense created a turnover and scored, and we saw some great execution on offense.”

Taylor credited quarterback Ethan Terrell for stepping up in the battle for the backup spot behind All-American candidate Jacobian Morgan.

“Ethan stepped up in that number two role as of right now,” he said. Terrell, a redshirt freshman from Detroit, competed last season but did not see game action. He’s battling with fellow redshirt freshman Parker Stofa and true freshman Jared Lockhart, a 6-foot-5 Charlotte native and three-star recruit who drew interest from several FBS programs before committing to Jackson State.

The offensive line remains a point of emphasis. “We preach physicality, and we’re going to do that each and every down,” Taylor said. “We want to run the football, but we know it all starts on the offensive and defensive line.”

Jackson State counting on blend of old and new

Taylor emphasized that last year’s title is in the past. “This is a new season,” he said. “We always talk about the Jackson State football standard. These guys get it, and they’re more locked in as we get closer to the season.”

Leadership will be crucial for a team blending returners with new faces. “All those preseason watch list guys—Jacobian, Travis, Jeremiah—they lead by example,” Taylor said. “When they touch the football field, it’s all about work for them. They’ve got one goal in mind—playing football in December.”

The coaching staff has also set week-by-week goals for camp. “Last week, we focused on finding the next-tier guys who can help us win football games,” Taylor explained. “This week, it’s about getting in the best condition possible so we’re strong in November and December.”

With depth battles ongoing at quarterback, cornerback, and receiver, Taylor sees competition as a daily expectation. “We’ve got guys who are ones, twos, and threes that all can contribute,” he said.

As the countdown to Hampton continues, Taylor said his team’s chemistry and preparation will determine if Jackson State can maintain its place atop the HBCU football world. “They’re doing everything the right way,” he said. “Now it’s about taking the proper steps to be ready on August 30.”

Shedeur Sanders will make his first NFL preseason start at quarterback tonight when the Cleveland Browns take on the Carolina Panthers. Former NFL MVP Cam Newton shared what he hopes to see from the young signal-caller in this key moment. His advice? Make it count.

Newton says this game is about more than stats. It’s about proving to everyone—from fans to teammates—that Sanders belongs on an NFL field.

“Create Competitive Commotion”

Newton urged Sanders to “create competitive commotion.” That means bringing energy, commanding attention, and sparking conversations about his performance.

“You want to get the whispers, the chirping,” Newton said. “Prove to yourself that you belong here.”

By doing that, Sanders can gain the trust of the locker room while showing the league his potential.

Handling the Highs and Lows

Newton stressed the importance of responding well to whatever happens on the field. Whether Sanders throws a touchdown, runs one in, tosses an interception, or fumbles a snap, the key is staying composed.

“I want to see him live up to the moment,” Newton said. “Just let it fly. Show that arm talent, show that leadership. Show what you’re capable of being.”

This debut is not just about big plays. It’s about showing maturity in both success and adversity.

Minimize Mistakes, Maximize Control

According to Newton, Sanders must also keep mistakes to a minimum. The true test is whether the offense can keep running smoothly with him under center.

“How do you handle those mistakes, but also how do you minimize mistakes?” Newton asked. “Control what you can control, and you’ll be good.”

Newton’s message was clear—focus on what you can manage, and let the rest take care of itself.

Big Stage, Big Opportunity

With kickoff just hours away, Cam Newton summed up the moment perfectly: “Big day for Big Shedeur.”

Sanders has the arm strength, leadership qualities, and talent to impress in his first NFL action. Now, it’s time to put it all together on the field.

Shedeur Sanders will make his NFL debut tonight. He’ll take the field for the Cleveland Browns against the Carolina Panthers. With multiple injuries at quarterback, Sanders now has a real shot to prove himself against NFL talent.

What Sanders Is Working With

Head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Sanders will start after injuries to Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. Joe Flacco will not suit up either, leaving the spotlight squarely on the rookie from Colorado.

This marks a major moment for Sanders, who hasn’t had consistent first-team reps in training camp but has impressed with his poise, arm strength, and football IQ.

What He’s Going Up Against

The Panthers are expected to play some first-string defenders in the opening series. That means Sanders will be tested early, especially by Carolina’s physical front seven.

He’ll also share some snaps with Tyler Huntley, who joined the team just days ago and is still learning the playbook. But tonight is Sanders’ show.

Other Former HBCU Players to Watch

Cleveland’s roster again highlights its strong links to HBCUs. Apart from Shedeur Sanders, three other former HBCU stars may get playing time this evening:

  • Kisean Johnson (WR) – A standout receiver, formerly of Alabama State, connected with Sanders during camp, providing an electrifying moment of HBCU chemistry.
  • Keenan Isaac (CB) – A former Alabama State cornerback recently signed to the Browns, Isaac brings size and experience to the secondary.
  • Jason Ivey (OT) – A massive offensive tackle from North Carolina A&T, Ivey is in his first NFL camp and could see snaps in rotation on the line.

How to Watch Tonight’s Game

Matchup: Browns vs. Panthers
Date and Time: Friday, August 8, at 7:00 p.m. ET
Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
TV Broadcast: NFL Network (National), WEWS News 5 (Cleveland), FOX 50 (Charlotte area)
Streaming Options: NFL+ and participating providers’ mobile apps

Final Word

All eyes are on Shedeur Sanders’ NFL debut — and rightfully so. He’s been given the keys to the Browns’ offense, at least for tonight, and will have a real opportunity to stake his claim as a quarterback in the NFL.

Will he rise to the moment?

Stay tuned.

Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in their first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, August 8. The move is unexpected—but it marks a pivotal moment in Sanders’ football journey, which began at Jackson State University.

From Jackson State to the NFL

Shedeur Sanders first rose to fame at Jackson State, where he played under his father, Deion Sanders. As a freshman, he threw for 3,231 yards and 30 touchdowns, winning the Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in FCS football.

In 2022, Sanders took his game to the next level. He passed for 3,732 yards and 40 touchdowns, completing over 70% of his passes. He was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Year and won the Deacon Jones Trophy, honoring him as the nation’s top HBCU player.

That historic run set the stage for his eventual transfer to Colorado. But now, his NFL chapter has officially begun.

How Sanders Got the Starting Job

The Browns’ quarterback room is currently dealing with injuries. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are sidelined with hamstring issues. Veteran Joe Flacco is expected to rest for the preseason.

That opened the door for Sanders, a fifth-round draft pick, to get his chance. Though he was listed fourth on the depth chart, Sanders has shined during training camp.

In recent practices, he completed 70% of his passes, with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He has impressed coaches and teammates with his poise, accuracy, and quick decision-making.

What to Watch in the Panthers Game

Sanders will share time with veteran backup Tyler Huntley, but he will take the first snap against the Panthers. This is his opportunity to show the Browns—and the league—that he belongs in the NFL.

Here’s what to watch:

  • Can he manage the offense and avoid turnovers?
  • Will he stay accurate under pressure?
  • Can he build chemistry with top receivers like Cedric Tillman, Jerry Jeudy, and David Njoku?

A strong performance could move Sanders up the depth chart quickly.

A Historic Opportunity

For Shedeur Sanders, this isn’t just a preseason game. It’s a full-circle moment. From dominating at Jackson State to earning NFL reps with the Cleveland Browns, Sanders is walking the path he was built for.

His start on Friday will mark the first time an HBCU quarterback begins an NFL preseason game in recent memory. It’s more than just a football game—it’s a moment for Jackson State, HBCUs, and anyone who believed in the journey.

Final Thoughts

Shedeur Sanders’ rise from Jackson State to starting for the Browns is a testament to his talent and determination. Friday’s game will be a critical test—but if he delivers, it may be just the beginning of a breakout NFL story.

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is making headlines—not only for his accuracy during practice, but for asking his father, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, not to visit him at training camp. The reason? Shedeur wants to earn his stripes before his father shows up in support.

“I don’t want him coming to see me right now because I want to get to where I want to go, then for him to see me,” Shedeur said on Monday. “I don’t want him to come and see me get a couple reps, and he is cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can’t be proud of me right now.”

According to Deion Sanders, Shedeur’s decision stemmed from the limited reps he’s received early in Browns camp. Instead, Deion opted to visit his other son, safety Shilo Sanders, who is participating in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ training camp.

“It’s kind of like I just want everything that I’m doing to be focused on this time,” Shedeur added. “I don’t want any distractions. We know how the media is and how people would twist things—just him being my dad showing up could take away from the team. It’s a gift and a curse.”

A Humble Start in the NFL

Once projected as a top quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur fell to the fifth round, where the Browns selected him with the 144th overall pick. He now finds himself in a four-way quarterback competition in Cleveland and, notably, is the only one who has yet to take reps with the first-team offense.

Despite the challenges, Shedeur remains focused on proving himself before welcoming any fanfare—including from his famous father.

Staying Focused Amid Family Health Concerns

Shedeur also addressed Deion Sanders’ recent health update. Last week, the elder Sanders revealed he had undergone surgery to remove his bladder due to a discovered tumor. Thankfully, post-operation scans have shown no signs of cancer, and Deion Sanders plans to continue coaching at the University of Colorado.

“It’s definitely a mental focus thing,” Shedeur said of the situation. “Dad, he’s one person that’ll handle his. We handle what we got to. So we didn’t even have a formal conversation about it. He basically said, ‘Y’all need to focus on what y’all can focus on. Don’t feel sorry for me—that’ll only affect your game.’”

A Young QB with a Veteran Mentality

Shedeur’s decision to keep his father at a distance for now isn’t about disrespect—it’s about dedication. He’s determined to carve out his own path in the NFL without leaning on Deion’s shadow.

As training camp continues, the rookie quarterback is embracing the grind, pushing past distractions, and showing he’s ready to earn respect the hard way—on his own terms.

Two former HBCU standouts found themselves reunited on the professional gridiron this week as Shedeur Sanders and Kisean Johnson connected on a crisp rollout pass during Cleveland Browns training camp—an eye-catching moment that quickly made the rounds on social media.

The connection wasn’t just a highlight; it was a nod to the rising influence of HBCU talent making its way to the NFL. Both players—Sanders from Jackson State and Johnson from Alabama State—represent a growing list of former SWAC stars working to carve out roles at the next level.

Shedeur Sanders: Jackson State HBCU Legacy with NFL Ambitions

Shedeur Sanders, the former Jackson State quarterback and son of NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, made national headlines during his HBCU tenure before transferring to Colorado for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. While his time at Jackson State was marked by record-setting performances and a SWAC championship, Sanders’ time under his father’s coaching spotlight laid the foundation for his pro ambitions.

Now with the Browns, Sanders enters a quarterback room filled with questions, offering him a real opportunity to showcase his pocket poise, mobility, and natural leadership in a developmental role.

Kisean Johnson: From HBCU Alabama State to the League via Vanderbilt and WKU

Johnson’s journey to the NFL has been one of persistence and progression. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, he burst onto the scene at Alabama State, where he posted a standout 2023 season:

  • 61 receptions
  • 829 yards
  • 7 touchdowns
  • Four 100-yard games, including a season-high 120 yards and a touchdown vs. Mississippi Valley State

Johnson’s versatility was also on display, contributing in the run game with scores on the ground and consistently showing up in clutch moments. In his final game as a Hornet, he tallied 92 yards against Prairie View A&M, capping off a stellar campaign.

Following his success in the SWAC, Johnson transferred briefly to Vanderbilt before ultimately finishing his college career at Western Kentucky, where he elevated his game further. In 2024, he played all 14 games and recorded:

  • 75 receptions
  • 925 yards
  • 7 touchdowns

That production earned him a free-agent contract with the Browns as one of three undrafted receivers signed this offseason.

A Familiar Connection, A New Arena

During the July 30 training camp session, Sanders rolled out and hit Johnson in stride on a well-timed route—an understated but symbolic moment showcasing not only their chemistry but the rising visibility of HBCU products in the NFL ecosystem.

The Cleveland Browns, currently in a transitional period in the AFC North, are eyeing young talent that can contribute immediately or develop into future playmakers. The presence of Sanders and Johnson, both once electrifying stars in the SWAC, highlights a growing trust in HBCU pipelines to deliver impact players.

With roster spots on the line and preseason play ahead, both players will have more chances to prove they belong on Sundays.

But he's back looking to add to his legacy.

]]>
BIRMINGHAM, AL — HBCU football is no stranger to stars, but few embody the spirit of their school quite like Jackson State quarterback Jacobian Morgan.

After transferring home to Mississippi from Syracuse University in 2023, Morgan quickly found his place under new head coach T.C. Taylor. By 2024, he had led Jackson State back to the SWAC Championship and a dominant win in the Celebration Bowl. Now, entering the 2025 season as the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a Walter Payton Award Watch List member, Morgan is ready to carry the offense—and the HBCU legacy—on his back.

From Syracuse to Stardom

Morgan’s journey back to Jackson was both strategic and personal.

“I’m a loyalty guy,” he said. “Even though I left Syracuse — that’s something I didn’t want to do — but I just knew it was best for me. And then I had T.C. Taylor, one of the best people I have in my life. I knew I made the right decision.”

That decision paid off quickly. Morgan not only found his rhythm on the field, but his connection with Taylor helped him unlock his potential as a leader.

“Year one, you seen the blueprint,” Morgan said. “Year two, we knew we had a great game plan… just believing in coach—it got us to a championship.”

Leading a Legacy Program

Taylor, entering his third year at the helm of Jackson State, didn’t shy away from putting the pressure on Morgan.

“This is the year that we have to turn the football over to Jacobian Morgan,” Taylor said. “He shared that load with Irv Mulligan last year. So now this time it’s on him… but he doesn’t have to go out there and be Superman each and every snap.”

That balance—responsibility without burden—is something both coach and quarterback embrace. For Morgan, the goal is simple.

“I just want to be a legend [at Jackson State],” he said. “I don’t want to just move around, go from school to school, I want to be a stable guy.”

Jacobian Morgan, Jackson State

Bright Lights and Big Moments

Morgan’s breakout season in 2024 included clutch performances in high-stakes games. But an early loss to Grambling State turned out to be a turning point.

“That loss… it was a lesson,” Morgan said. “It taught us who we are… to stay humble, stay grounded, and don’t take no team lightly. That game there was definitely a pivotal point. I feel like it was a great reason why we won the Celebration Bowl and the SWAC Championship.”

Morgan shined on the biggest stage, delivering a standout performance at the Celebration Bowl that boosted his national profile.

“You want to put on your best ball right there,” he said. “Display for the scouts out there that may want to recruit you to the league. That right there was a blessing… to get it done for Jackson State was amazing.”

Staying Home, Building History

While many quarterbacks with Morgan’s trajectory might test the transfer waters or declare early for the draft, he’s staying put.

His reason? Home.

“I love this city, I love Jackson, I love the team and everything they bring,” he said. “Coming home and having everybody at every game—you’re going to get love from the fans, from the stands, family. You see your fam out there, they happy, and it makes them smile. So that’s why I do it.”

Taylor sees that loyalty as the foundation for even greater things. “Relationships are right,” Taylor said. “They believe in me and our culture at Jackson State.”

The Road Ahead

Despite returning as champions, neither Morgan nor Taylor is coasting into 2025. Taylor knows the Celebration Bowl win is just a stepping stone.

“We talk about tradition at JSU. JSU has a winning brand,” he said. “These guys are still hungry. We talk about running it back—and that’s what they’ve been doing each and every week since the end of May.”

For Morgan, the mission is clear: take Jackson State back to the mountaintop, and do it with purpose. “We’re going back for sure,” he said with a smile.

With Jacobian Morgan under center, Jackson State isn’t just chasing another title—it’s building a legacy rooted in homegrown pride, HBCU tradition, and unwavering belief.

WACO, Texas | Stats Perform has announced a 30-player preseason watch list for the 2025 Walter Payton Award, presented annually to the national offensive player of the year in Division I FCS college football with a pair of Jackson State student-athletes named to the list.

JaCobian Morgan continues to add to his preseason award by earning a spot on the Preseason Watch List. The two-time Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Morgan finished last season with 2,051 yards through the air on 150-of-234 passing, finishing the season 10-1 as a starter, including 10 consecutive wins. He also threw 19 touchdown passes with just eight interceptions, finishing with a 64.1 completion percentage. He also rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Morgan completed the season ranked nationally in several categories including passing efficiency (13th/157.9), points responsible for (16th/164), passing yards per completion (17th/13.72), passing touchdowns (24th/21), completion percentage (31st/0.637), points responsible for per game (35th/11.7), passing yards (43rd/2,236), passing yards per game (69th/159.7), completions per game (80th/11.64), and rushing touchdowns (98th/6).

Travis Terrell, Jackson State

Meanwhile, he was joined on the list by Travis Terrell Jr., a highly-decorated player last season including being named the Freshman of the Year by the SWAC and Phil Steele. He was ranked among the best in the nation in returns, leading the nation in kick returns for touchdowns with two. He also ranked in the top five nationally in three other categories, including third in punt returns (16.7), fourth in combined kick returns (851), fifth in kickoff returns (30.6), and 36th in all-purpose yards (108.08). The sophomore also ran the ball 459 yards on 75 carries with four touchdowns, and also caught 15 passes for 95 yards on the offensive side of the ball. Terrell was named First Team All-SWAC this season and earned four selections on the Phil Steele all-conference team, while also earning a pair of Preseason All-American teams.

The award, in its 39th season and affectionately known as the Heisman of the FCS, is named for legendary running back Walter Payton, who starred at Jackson State as part of his Hall of Fame career. Past recipients include Steve McNair, Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook, Jimmy Garoppolo and Cooper Kupp; Montana State’s Tommy Mellott was last season’s winner. All 13 FCS conferences are represented on the watch list, which includes nine past finalists. This season’s recipient will be announced at the Stats Perform National Awards Banquet on Jan. 3, 2026 in Nashville, Tennessee. The Walter Payton Award was first presented in 1987. More players can join the watch list before a national media panel selects the winner after the regular season from a group of finalists.

Jackson State is one of just three schools with two players named to the Preseason List including Illinois State, South Dakota, and Stephen F. Austin.

]]>
Former Jackson State University standout Travis Hunter is already turning heads at his first NFL training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Widely regarded for his exceptional versatility, Hunter began camp working exclusively at wide receiver—but that won’t last long.

Head coach Liam Coen confirmed that Hunter will begin taking reps at both wide receiver and cornerback by the end of the team’s first six practices at the Miller Electric Center adjacent to EverBank Stadium.

Coen said the plan is to give Hunter “a couple days on offense, a couple days on defense,” and then eventually have him switch sides during a single practice. That kind of two-way performance, Coen added, “will kind of become the norm.”

From HBCU Trailblazer to NFL Hybrid

Hunter made headlines when he became the highest-ranked recruit ever to commit to an HBCU, joining Jackson State University under the leadership of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. His choice redefined what was possible for top athletes considering Historically Black Colleges and Universities, bringing a wave of visibility and respect to Black college football.

After transferring to the University of Colorado, Hunter continued to excel on both sides of the ball, making him one of the most intriguing prospects in the NFL Draft. Now, the Jaguars are designing his development plan to mirror that unique two-way potential.

Strategic Development: Every Minute Mapped

According to Coen, the team has carefully mapped out every moment of Hunter’s time in the building to maximize both learning and performance. He explained that “every moment, every minute that he is in the building is accounted for,” and the goal is to get the “best possible outcome” from that investment of time.

Hunter primarily worked on offense during OTAs and minicamp. Coen noted that the offensive system demanded more initial attention due to its complexity—specifically route trees, checks, audibles, and in-play adjustments. Still, Hunter did take defensive reps at one open OTA session and during the final periods of minicamp.

Lessons From Spring: Balance Is Key

One of the key learnings from spring practices was that having Hunter go too long without reps on one side of the ball wasn’t productive. Coen said, “That’s too long to go without doing anything on the other side of the ball.”

With training camp organized into three-day practice blocks followed by off days, the Jaguars are now in a better position to integrate his two-way training more efficiently. Even on days when Hunter works with just one unit, he will still meet with coaches from the other side—sometimes more than once.

What to Expect From Hunter in Camp

With the Jaguars fully committed to nurturing his rare talent, Travis Hunter is expected to emerge as one of the league’s most exciting young players. His historic journey—from HBCU icon to NFL rookie—continues to challenge the traditional mold of player development.

After an up-and-down journey in the NFL, former Jackson State star and Detroit Lions edge rusher James Houston has signed with the Dallas Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

Houston, a 2022 sixth-round pick out of Jackson State, began his career on the Lions’ practice squad. He made an immediate impact after being activated, debuting on Thanksgiving Day with a two-sack performance against the Buffalo Bills. He went on to tally eight sacks in just seven games, quickly becoming one of the league’s most surprising breakout rookies.

A curved road leads to the Dallas Cowboys

Despite that early success, Houston struggled to carve out a consistent role. In the 2023 offseason, Detroit experimented with him at SAM linebacker, but the fit didn’t stick. His momentum took another hit when he fractured his ankle while covering a punt in Week 2 against Seattle, sidelining him for most of the season. He returned just in time for the NFC Championship game.

In 2024, the Lions gave Houston another opportunity as a traditional defensive end. However, he began the season as a healthy scratch. An injury to star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson opened the door for Houston to get back on the field, but he was ultimately waived on November 26.

Now, Houston gets a fresh start with Dallas, a team actively building depth behind Micah Parsons. His mix of speed and burst off the edge makes him a compelling low-risk, high-reward signing for the Cowboys.

A Force at Jackson State

At Jackson State University, James Houston was a dominant force on defense. In his lone season (2021), he recorded 70 total tackles, 24.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, and 1 interception, helping lead JSU to an SWAC Championship and earning FCS All-American honors.

At 25 years old, James Houston has a chance to revive his career and contribute to one of the NFC’s top contenders, the Dallas Cowboys.

Defending HBCU national champion Jackson State is once again set to take center stage during the upcoming football season, with four games scheduled to air on the HBCUGo platform. The 2025 HBCU football schedule was unveiled this week by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and HBCUGo, featuring multiple high-profile matchups for the Tigers.

Jackson State, which finished the 2024 campaign with a 12-2 record, claimed its third SWAC championship in four seasons and capped it off by winning the Celebration Bowl over South Carolina State. With momentum at its back, the program will receive national attention as it seeks to repeat as HBCU champions.

The Tigers will make their first HBCUGo appearance in the season opener against Hampton University on August 30. That game will kick off at 2 p.m. at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson. One month later, Jackson State heads to Mobile, Alabama, to take on Alabama A&M in the Port City Classic at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. That matchup is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff on October 4.

Las Vegas Classic, Jackson State, Grambling State

Arguably the most anticipated HBCU showdown of the year will come on October 25, when Jackson State faces longtime rival Grambling State in the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic. The nationally televised event will take place inside Allegiant Stadium—home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders—with a 5 p.m. kickoff.

Jackson State’s final appearance on HBCUGo this season will be a home game against Bethune-Cookman on November 15, beginning at noon.

As anticipation builds, fans can still purchase season tickets starting at $110 for youth general admission. Reserved and box seats are priced at $235 and $300, respectively, and include a $10 donation supporting the Sonic Boom of the South and JSU’s Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) initiatives. Parking passes range from $135 to $810, depending on lot location and vehicle type.

With four nationally streamed games, Jackson State continues to represent the standard of HBCU football excellence while bringing its tradition-rich program to viewers across the country.

Jackson State head men’s basketball coach Mo Williams is getting his flowers in a major way. The former NBA Champion and Jackson native will officially join the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025.

Williams made his mark early as a star at Murrah High School. He went on to play at the University of Alabama and built an impressive 13-year NBA career. Known for his smooth jumper and leadership, Williams reached the top in 2016. He helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win their first-ever NBA championship alongside LeBron James.

Now, he’s giving back to the game at Jackson State. Williams is building the Tigers and mentoring the next generation of hoopers.

The Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced his induction in June. He will be honored alongside a standout class: legendary Southern Miss baseball coach Scott Berry, football greats Steve Freeman, Mike Justice, Dexter McCluster, Derrick Nix, coach Steve Rives, and Robbie Webb.

The induction weekend is set for August 1-2, 2025. It will be a celebration of Mississippi’s rich sports history.

Last season, Williams led Jackson State to a 15-17 overall record and a 10-8 finish in SWAC play. The Tigers showed resilience, securing key conference wins and locking in a top-five seed heading into the SWAC Tournament. Although they fell short of a championship run, the team’s grit and growth throughout the season reflect Williams’ leadership. He’s laying a strong foundation and building momentum for the program’s future.

Mo Williams’ journey—from the streets of Jackson to NBA glory and now to the Hall of Fame—is a full-circle moment. His story is a powerful reminder of hard work, dedication, and community impact.

Lindsey Hunter is coming home — again. The former Detroit Pistons guard and two-time NBA champion has been named the new head coach of Michigan’s Sparta High School boys basketball program. It’s a full-circle moment for an HBCU legend, NBA veteran, and proud mentor returning to his NBA roots in the Great Lakes State. He will bring a legacy stretching from Jackson State to the Palace of Auburn Hills.

SWAC Roots

Hunter, a Mississippi native and HBCU star, made his name at Jackson State University. There, he torched Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponents. He began his collegiate career at Alcorn State, earning SWAC Freshman of the Year honors in 1989. Hunter transferred to Jackson State and never looked back. He averaged 26.7 points per game as a senior, earning SWAC Player of the Year in 1993. That same year, he led JSU to an NIT upset over UConn. Leading to him being selected 10th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Draft.

Detroit became his second home — and now it’s his coaching battleground.

Hunter spent 12 of his 17 NBA seasons with the Pistons, earning a reputation as one of the league’s toughest on-ball defenders. A gritty, tenacious guard, he helped anchor the Pistons’ defensive identity during their early-2000s championship run, earning his second ring in 2004 when Detroit stunned the star-studded Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Ironically, Hunter also earned his first ring with the Lakers in 2002 — a rare feat of being a champion on both sides of that iconic rivalry.

But for all the bright lights of the NBA, Hunter has always had a heart for mentoring.

Natural Mentor

After playing, Hunter transitioned into coaching, including stints with the Chicago Bulls, Golden State Warriors, and Phoenix Suns. He served as interim head coach of the Suns during the 2012–13 season. In 2019, he returned to his HBCU roots, becoming head coach at Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU). He led MVSU for three seasons and helped rebuild the program’s foundation with the same toughness he brought as a player.

Now, he’s bringing that HBCU pedigree and NBA grind to the high school hardwood in Sparta, Michigan—a town just outside Grand Rapids.

His connection to Michigan runs deep. His son, Lindsey Hunter IV, was a standout guard at Southfield Christian School near Detroit. The younger Hunter won three state championships before college. And even more recently, Hunter helped launch a youth basketball initiative through his foundation after meeting Griffin Gullekson, a Sparta student battling cancer. Moved by the teen’s resilience, Hunter helped create a program through the Lindsey Hunter Foundation that supports young athletes facing illness or adversity.

For Sparta High School, bringing in Hunter isn’t just a flashy hire — it’s a cultural moment. Here’s a coach who’s played with Hall of Famers, coached at every level, and dominated the HBCU landscape. He’s bringing all of that to a small-town team with big dreams.

The Pistons faithful know Lindsey Hunter as the dogged defender who never backed down. The HBCU community knows him as one of their greatest guards and a proud standard-bearer of SWAC excellence. A new generation of Michigan ballers will now know him as Coach Hunter.

If there’s one HBCU football program that knows how to command attention, it’s Jackson State University. And now, the reigning HBCU national champions are bringing fans even closer to the action with Under Armour’s latest short-form documentary, “Guard Thee Yard: Jackson State University Spring Football 2025.”

Told through the lens of Head Coach T.C. Taylor, the documentary dives deep into the Tigers’ relentless preparation this spring as they chase back-to-back national titles. The message is simple but powerful: “Guard Thee Yard” isn’t just a slogan—it’s a mindset.

This marks the second time Under Armour and Jackson State’s media team have collaborated on a documentary. Their 2023 film exploded past 1.5 million views, proving there’s a serious appetite for HBCU football storytelling done right.

Life After Prime—And Better Than Ever

When Coach T.C. Taylor stepped into the head coaching role after Deion Sanders’ high-profile exit in late 2022, the question was whether JSU could sustain that momentum. Safe to say, they’ve done more than that—they’ve thrived.

Under Taylor, the Tigers have leaned into their identity. The flash is still there, but it’s backed by discipline, player development, and a rock-solid culture. Last season’s HBCU national title run cemented that JSU isn’t just living off Prime’s legacy—it’s building something even bigger.

Under Armour x Jackson State: A Blueprint for HBCU Partnerships

The documentary also highlights the growing partnership between Under Armour and Jackson State, which signed a contract extension with UA in 2024 that lasts through 2029. The deal doesn’t just cover gear for JSU’s 17 varsity sports—it’s about investing in student-athletes’ futures.

From the HBCU Career Combine at UA’s Baltimore HQ to celebrating JSU’s dominance in women’s sports—basketball, softball, tennis, and volleyball, all snagging recent SWAC titles—the partnership is a blueprint for how brands can show up for HBCUs.

“We’re excited to continue to evolve together and positively impact even more student-athletes,” said Sean Eggert, SVP of Global Sports Marketing at Under Armour.

JSU Athletic Director Ashley Robinson doubled down: “The opportunities of partnership are endless. It heightens the student-athlete experience at Jackson State.”

“Guard Thee Yard” isn’t just a documentary—it’s proof of how far Jackson State football has come and how bright its future is.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are betting big on talent developed at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Two former HBCU stars, Bhayshul Tuten and Travis Hunter, were signed to lucrative rookie contracts following the 2025 NFL Draft.

From HBCU Stardom to NFL Payday

For Bhayshul Tuten, the journey to the NFL is a testament to grit, growth, and perseverance. The former North Carolina A&T running back officially inked his rookie contract with the Jaguars. It is a four-year deal worth $5.27 million, including a $1 million signing bonus.

Tuten’s rise started at North Carolina A&T, where he became one of the most electrifying players in the Big South. As a sophomore, he torched defenses for over 1,000 rushing yards, stringing together an eye-popping 10 consecutive games with 100 yards or more. His speed, vision, and breakaway ability made him a nightmare for opposing defenses and caught the attention of scouts nationwide.

When the opportunity arose, Tuten transferred to Virginia Tech to prove he could compete against Power 4 competition. He did precisely that, ranking in the top five in the ACC in rushing yards and finishing tied for second in rushing touchdowns. His standout college career peaked at the 2025 NFL Combine. He recorded the fastest 40-yard dash among all running backs, launching him from a late-round projection to a solid fourth-round selection by the Jaguars.

Now joining a talented backfield in Jacksonville alongside Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby. Bhayshul Tuten is expected to contribute in multiple roles. Whether on special teams, in third-down situations, or as a versatile offensive weapon.

Travis Hunter Breaks the Bank

While Tuten’s story is one of beating the odds, Travis Hunter’s is one of unprecedented expectation—and payoff.

The Jaguars shook up the 2025 NFL Draft when they traded up to snag Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick. His rookie contract reflects that lofty draft position. It will be $46.65 million for four years, fully guaranteed, including a jaw-dropping $30.57 million signing bonus. The deal also comes with a fifth-year option, standard for first-round picks.

Hunter’s journey began at Jackson State under NFL legend Deion Sanders. As the No. 1 recruit in the nation in 2022, his commitment to an HBCU sent shockwaves through college football. At Jackson State, he showcased his rare ability to dominate on both sides of the ball. Locking down receivers as a cornerback and making highlight-reel plays as a wide receiver.

Travis Hunter followed Sanders to the University of Colorado, where he continued to elevate his game on a national stage against top-tier competition. His versatility, football IQ, and freakish athleticism made him a can’t-miss prospect.

Hunter now enters the NFL as a true two-way player—a rarity in today’s league. The Jaguars plan to use him primarily at cornerback but aren’t ruling out offensive packages designed to take advantage of his dynamic skill set.

A Testament to HBCU Talent and Development

Both Tuten and Hunter share a common thread: their roots in HBCU football. While each eventually transferred to Power 4 programs to gain broader exposure, their foundation was built at HBCUs. Their development at schools like North Carolina A&T and Jackson State speaks volumes about the quality of coaching, player development, and competition within the HBCU ranks.

However, their departures also underscore a growing challenge. HBCUs increasingly serve as launching pads for elite athletes who eventually transition to larger programs. While that migration highlights the need for greater investment in HBCU athletics, it also proves that these institutions continue to produce NFL-ready talent.

The Future Is Bright in Duval

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tuten and Hunter’s signings represent more than just roster additions—they symbolize an embrace of unconventional paths to NFL stardom.

Tuten brings a gritty, chip-on-his-shoulder mentality forged from fighting for recognition at every level. Hunter brings generational talent capable of changing games on both sides of the ball. Together, they represent the past, present, and future of HBCU excellence, making its mark on the NFL.

Fans in Duval County should get ready. Whether it’s Hunter locking down receivers, snagging touchdowns, or Tuten slicing through defenses for explosive gains, the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new rookie class is poised to turn heads—and it all started in an HBCU uniform.

A Long-Term Investment in HBCU Talent

The Mississippi HBCU STEM Initiative, launched by Nissan in 2014, aims to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It funds robotics labs, summer STEM camps, and innovation projects. Additionally, the initiative creates internship pipelines for industries such as automotive and technology.

For instance, Alcorn State University received $45,000 this year. The funds will upgrade its robotics labs and expand outreach to younger students. Nissan’s Victor Taylor, an Alcorn graduate and VP at the Canton plant, emphasized the value of the program:

“We are helping prepare students for future careers in industries like automotive,” Taylor said.

Supporting Every Mississippi HBCU

All seven of Mississippi’s HBCUs benefit from this year’s donation. These include:

  • Alcorn State University
  • Coahoma Community College
  • Hinds Community College – Utica Campus
  • Jackson State University
  • Mississippi Valley State University
  • Rust College
  • Tougaloo College
HBCU Nissan Mississippi STEM

Each school will use the funds to meet its unique needs. For example, Coahoma hosts summer STEM camps. Jackson State is enhancing its robotics and design labs. Meanwhile, Mississippi Valley State is expanding its internship opportunities.

Building Pathways from College to Career

Nissan’s commitment goes beyond financial support. The company is building long-term pathways that connect students to meaningful careers. According to Nissan USA, these programs align with Nissan’s goals for diversity and innovation.

Nationally, HBCUs play a vital role in producing Black graduates in STEM fields. As the NSF reports, they play a key role in diversifying the workforce. Therefore, initiatives like this one are more important than ever.

Why It Matters for HBCUs

Nissan’s support strengthens labs and classrooms. It also empowers students through early exposure, hands-on training, and mentorship. Ultimately, it helps build a stronger future for both HBCU students and the industries that will one day employ them.

Strategic partnerships, such as Nissan’s, help elevate their impact. These donations don’t just enhance campus facilities—they empower students with tools, mentorship, and career access that extend far beyond graduation.

The College Baseball Foundation (CBF) has announced its 2025 College Baseball Hall of Fame class. The list includes 21 new inductees who left a lasting impact on the game. Among them is Earl Sanders, a former Jackson State standout and HBCU baseball star.

Sanders shined at Jackson State, one of the top HBCU baseball programs in the country. He played three seasons before the Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the first round of the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft. Sanders dominated HBCU baseball. He earned both Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hitter of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honors. In 1986, he led Jackson State to a SWAC championship and an NCAA Regional appearance at LSU. That season, Sanders posted a .432 batting average, hit 17 home runs, and collected 60 RBIs.

Sanders is now the second Jackson State representative in the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Sanders’ former head coach Robert Braddy, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016.

“This year’s class includes legendary players, iconic coaches, a revered umpire, and for the first time, a sports agent who helped shape the modern era of college baseball,” said Craig Ramsey, chairman of the CBF Board of Trustees. “Their achievements show the growth and diversity of the game, including the important role of HBCU baseball.”

Earl Sanders is now in his second stint as head baseball coach at Tougaloo College, a Mississippi HBCU. Sanders, a familiar face to the Tougaloo Baseball program, originally led the Bulldogs from 2002 to 2007, playing a pivotal role in re-establishing the team. Before his return as head coach, Sanders also served as an assistant coach, helping guide the Bulldogs to one of their best seasons prior to 2014.

The College Baseball Foundation will honor the 18th induction class at the 2026 Night of Champions. The event, presented by Prairiefire, takes place on February 12, 2026, in Overland Park, Kansas. It will serve as the ceremonial start of the college baseball season.

For tickets and the full list of inductees, visit the College Baseball Foundation website.

HBCU baseball continues to develop great players and leaders who inspire future generations.

Students at Jackson State University are stepping up to make a difference in the community that surrounds their HBCU. Through a special project, they are helping senior citizens feel safer in their homes.

A Partnership with Purpose

The initiative was led by JSU’s Office of Community Engagement in partnership with the Pecan Tree Park Neighborhood Association. Together, they installed 150 Ring video doorbells for residents in Jackson—completely free of charge.

This effort was made possible by a $50,000 grant from the Home Depot Retool Your School Community Project.

Supporting Senior Residents

The free doorbells were installed for residents aged 65 and older who live within a 10-mile radius of Jackson State University. This project aimed to improve safety and peace of mind for the elderly community.

“We’re extremely grateful to have secured the resources from Home Depot to cater to the needs of our community,” said Dr. Heather Denne, director of Community Engagement at JSU. “We hope that by having access to the Ring cameras, our neighborhoods surrounding JSU will feel more joy about keeping their properties pristine.”

A Community-Wide Effort

Other neighborhood associations also played an important role. These included:

  • Gowdy Washington Addition
  • Jayne Avenue
  • Matthews Estates
  • Westland Plaza
  • Poindexter Park
  • The Center for Social Entrepreneurship

The collaboration shows what can happen when local groups come together with a shared mission.

Gratitude from the Community

Local resident Emmitt Powe, age 81, expressed his appreciation:

“It’s a great help to those who probably can’t afford it. Anything that can help us see what’s going on around us is a real blessing. It makes me proud, and I appreciate those who decided to make this gift to the senior citizens.”

An HBCU that supports its community

In 2024, Jackson State University became the first HBCU to receive all three Retool Your School grants—the Campus Improvement Grant, Innovation Lounge Grant and Community Project Grant.

The funding supported several projects, including the recent Ring camera initiative, the remodeling and furnishing of JSU’s Innovation Lounge in the Student Center and the beautification and installation of the Pocket Park at the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) Civil Rights Education Center, part of the Margaret Walker Center.

This project is a shining example of how students can lead positive change. Thanks to support from Home Depot and the local community, Jackson’s elderly residents now have an extra layer of protection at their front doors.

Jackson State University (JSU) has secured a $1.3 million state grant. The funding will support artificial intelligence (AI) education, workforce training, and entrepreneurship programs. The announcement was made by Governor Tate Reeves. The grant is part of a $9.1 million investment through MAI-TAP—the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence Technology Advancement Program.

Boosting Innovation Across Mississippi

The MAI-TAP grants aim to grow the state’s future workforce. They also support innovation and economic development across Mississippi.

“We are grateful for this investment in our mission,” said Dr. Denise Jones Gregory, JSU interim president. “This funding supports our faculty, our students, and our efforts to lead in emerging fields.”

She added, “It gives our students the tools and experience to succeed. It also helps us serve our communities through innovation.”

Nissan Supports STEM at HBCUs like Jackson State

The grant aligns with Nissan’s Mississippi HBCU STEM Initiative. Founded in 2014, the program encourages innovation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

“Nissan is proud to invest in Mississippi’s HBCUs,” said Victor Taylor, VP of Manufacturing at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant. “As an Alcorn State graduate, this means a lot to me.”

Taylor noted that Nissan’s Canton plant employs many HBCU graduates. “This investment helps prepare students for careers in industries like automotive,” he said.

Programs Across the State

Other funded programs include:

  • A STEM camp at Coahoma Community College
  • Robotics and lab resources at Jackson State University
  • An innovation and internship program at Mississippi Valley State University

Since 2014, Nissan has invested $2.75 million in STEM programs at Mississippi HBCUs.

A future star staying home?

]]>
Could one of the nation’s top young basketball recruits choose an HBCU? Jackson State University is doing its part to make that a reality. Led by head coach and NBA veteran Mo Williams, Jackson State has offered one of the most promising young players in the country—Erick Dampier Jr. He’s a dominant 6-foot-10, 230-pound center in the class of 2028 and the son of former NBA big man Erick Dampier Sr.

Still just a rising sophomore at Madison-Ridgeland Academy (Miss.), Dampier Jr. is already turning heads. He’s ranked No. 3 in ESPN’s national rankings for the 2028 class. With early offers from Purdue and San Diego, the HBCU bid from Jackson State shows that Mo Williams is aiming high—and local.

Production That Matches the Hype

Dampier Jr. isn’t just a name with a legacy—he’s producing at a high level. As a freshman at MRA, he averaged 13.5 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game. He used his size, strength, and athleticism to control the paint.

He’s known for rim protection, second-jump quickness, and nonstop energy. The 6’10” prospect is often the most physically dominant player on the court. And he’s still growing.

With each game, he shows flashes of a big man who could one day dominate college—and maybe the pros.

International Success and National Recognition

Dampier Jr. isn’t just shining in Mississippi. He’s also shown his talent on the international stage. A key member of the USA Basketball U16 National Team, he started every game in the FIBA U16 AmeriCup. He helped Team USA bring home a gold medal.

A Mississippi Hoops Moment: Williams vs. Dampier

Mo Williams and Erick Dampier Sr. never shared a team during their NBA careers. But they share a connection through Mississippi—and now through their sons.

Back in February 2024, their sons squared off in a high-profile high school game. Dampier Jr., then a 13-year-old eighth grader, took the floor for MRA. He faced off against Mike and Mason Williams, sons of Jackson State’s head coach.

The Williams brothers combined for 40 points, 25 rebounds, and seven assists. They led Jackson Academy to victory. Mike, a junior, dropped 29 points. Many of those came from assists by Mason, a sophomore, who added 11 points of his own.

But Dampier Jr. wasn’t fazed. Already 6’9″ and playing varsity as a middle schooler, he held his own. He posted 18 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in the loss.

“He was the top-ranked seventh grader in the country last year,” said MRA head coach Richard Duease to Rick Cleveland. “He’ll be the top-ranked eighth grader this year, too.”

“You ought to see him play kids his own age—it’s not fair,” Duease added.

Why Jackson State’s Offer Means More

That game may have planted a seed in Mo Williams’ mind. Why not keep Mississippi’s next elite big man at home at an HBCU?

Dampier Jr.’s profile is as complete as they come for a player of his age. He’s a gold medalist. A top-three national recruit in his class. He’s the son of an NBA veteran. He already has one P4 offer, and now, some DI HBCU interest from Jackson State University—led by a coach who’s been to the league.

The Bigger Picture: HBCU Basketball and the Homegrown Dream

There’s still a lot of basketball left for him to play. Many more offers will come. But Jackson State is in early. And it’s easy to picture a homegrown Mississippi big man, shaped by NBA pedigree, staying home to rep an HBCU.

Jackson State University alumni are ramping up pressure on Mississippi officials to ensure a fair and transparent search for the next president of the HBCU.

Through an initiative called Thee 1877 Project, supporters launched the “For a Better JSU” email campaign this week, urging students, faculty and alumni to contact the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) board and state lawmakers. The group says the last three JSU presidents were chosen through a process that lacked openness and community involvement.

“For too long the leadership selection process at JSU has failed the institution and its stakeholders,” the group said on its website, as reported by Mississippi Today. “It has bred instability, eroded public trust, damaged our university’s reputation and squandered taxpayer dollars.”

The campaign follows the abrupt resignation of former JSU President Marcus Thompson, which echoed the unexplained departures of predecessors Thomas Hudson and William Bynum. Bynum resigned after being arrested on a prostitution charge. The school has seen three presidents step down in less than a decade.

Organizers want IHL to publicly acknowledge previous missteps, conduct a national search for a high-caliber leader, and involve students, alumni and community members in the selection process.

According to spokesperson Mark Dawson, the group aims to send 1,000 emails by the next IHL board meeting on June 19. As of Friday, 500 emails had been submitted. The campaign may soon expand to include outreach to Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and State Auditor Shad White.

“We need to let them know this process they have in place is not good,” Dawson told Mississippi Today.

Stepping in the gap for Jackson State

Critics also point to the silence from the JSU National Alumni Association (JSUNAA). Dawson said their group is stepping in to “raise our voice, organize and partner with IHL” for change.

“We’re rising up yet again,” he added.

This push for transparency at Jackson State comes on the heels of controversy at another HBCU—Florida A&M University—where the recent hiring of Marva Johnson as President has drawn sharp criticism. Johnson, appointed without broad input from stakeholders, has faced backlash over concerns about political ties and lack of engagement with the campus community.

The parallel between both institutions highlights growing calls across HBCUs for more inclusive leadership processes and accountability. As JSU alumni mobilize for reform, FAMU’s situation serves as a stark reminder of the consequences when transparency and community involvement are overlooked in leadership decisions.
